Hi Everyone Well the race to the state government election finish line is moving along with only a couple more weeks until the State Government election is done and dusted. As you all know GCNews is all about providing a fair and equitable approach to ensuring that our community is made aware of each of the candidates standing in our readership area, and is in no way related to the amount of advertising space that they purchase. Last week we brought you profiles of the candidates for the Glasshouse Electorates, in this edition we will feature the candidates for the Caloundra electorates, this just gives you a bit of background on what they have done previously. In following editions we will also include contributions from the candidates about what they

think are the key issues for our communities; this will give them an opportunity to see if they actually understand what is of critical concern for our townships. At this time of the year we also include a special feature on the future leaders of our area – yes the very proud and dedicated young locals who have taken on the tasks of school captains. It will be interesting to see whether any of them one day put their hat into the ring for a state or local government election – but in the mean time, I hope that they all enjoy the added responsibilities that come with such an important role. Regards,

Last month, after a long and public battle with cancer, popular Glass House Mountains resident Kym Gilbert was laid to rest in a fitting tribute to the woman many knew fondly as ‘big red’.

According to her father David, Kym had a very bubbly, people oriented nature and was very well known throughout the local area. Last year, residents rallied around to help complete her garden, in a special garden makeover. At the time, Kym was overwhelmed by the amount of community spirit shown by the many individuals and businesses who lent their support in completing her garden for her. Throughout her ordeal, she maintained a positive attitude that was a source of inspiration to those around her. Her funeral, attended by more than 300 people, was held on Monday, February 20, and she was laid to rest at the Beerwah Cemetery in Roys Road.

Out of their comfort zone

RYAN MOORE

It’s billed to be one of the most adrenaline pumping adventure races in the Southern Hemisphere, but if the demeanour of local competitors Craig Vaughan and Jonas Howard is anything to go by, it will be a casual walk in the park.

LABOR CANDIDATE FOR GLASSHOUSE

The two mates, who only recently became friends after their wives met at a mother’s course at Beerwah, are surprisingly relaxed ahead of the weekend’s Kathmandu Adventure Series event, which will involve a grueling cross country course covering around 40kms in and around Beerburrum. The pair are the first to admit their physical preparation has been more than a little lacking. “I haven’t trained for the past two weeks, after I sprained my ankle on the way to touch footy,” Craig said. Jonas may be a little more prepared, having taken his bike out for six kilometre ride the night before, but neither competitor, who will be completing the challenge as a team, is expecting to break any time records. In fact, their main concern is completing the challenge within the six hour time limit. “We’ll certainly have to pace ourselves,” they said. All up, Craig and Jonas estimate they’ve put in about 10 hours training time, but remain optimistic they’ll finish the course in time. “It’s a good way to get fit, and it will certainly be a challenge,” said Jonas. So what inspired these two young first time fathers, one of whom works in finance, the other a pharmacist, to take on an event that will put their fitness to the test as they take on varying legs of kayaking, mountain biking, running, coasteering and orienteering?

A new voice for Glass House

Ryan will deliver:

- Back to basics education reform - Big investments in skills and training - More accessible health services backed up with new facilities that only Labor will deliver - More seats & services on public transport - Cuts to red tape for small business - A strong commitment to environmental protection

On March 24, Vote 1 Ryan Moore for real representation in Glass House Find out more about Ryan's postive agenda Visit www.twitter.com/ryan4glasshouse

Authorised R Moore 15 Hilltop Crescent Maleny QLD 4552

First time fathers Craig and Jonas are getting used to new challenges, but admit the weekend's Kathmandu Adventure Series will really test them “Now that we’ve become fathers, it’s important that we are fit, and it’s a great excuse to get out and enjoy each other’s company, and the beauty of our backyard,” Jonas said. “It will be an adventure, for sure.” Craig has done the challenge in previous years, when, according to him, he was a lot fitter, but for Jonas, it will be his first time. His main concern is that Craig doesn’t slow him down too much, while Craig is hoping he doesn’t get left behind. Their wives, however, are just hoping their husbands make it home in one piece!

Reunion of the ‘Yellow Van’ volunteers

Rooms for rent!

Tuesday, March 27 marks the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Visitors Information Centre (yellow van) at Matthew Flinders Park.

Are you part of a not-for-profit group or community organisation and looking for somewhere locally to hold activities and get togethers?

Since the opening in 2002 and until its close in 2009, some 130 dedicated volunteers braved wind, dust, noise, rain and mozzies to provide information about our iconic mountains to the thousands of local, interstate and overseas visitors who called in to the van for a chat. The new centre that replaced the van opened on May 9, 2009. To celebrate the memories of those seven years, a reunion is planned for Tuesday, March 27 at 4.00pm in the barbeque area at Settlers Park (next to the current information centre). If you still have your yellow shirt, be sure to wear it, if not something yellow will be fine. Also a few nibbles wouldn’t go astray. For more information, phone Ivon on 5496 9974.

Look no further, as we may have just found the perfect space! Not only is the Glasshouse Early Education Centre a registered long day care centre, it also has empty rooms that it is looking to hire out to eligible community groups for no charge. Centre director Karen said the spaces would be ideal for playgroups or other child related activities, looking for an area for weekly or monthly get togethers. “It’s a shame to see one half of the building not being used, so we’ve put our heads together and been able to make it available for members of the local community to use during business hours at no charge,” Karen said. At one end of the building, there are adults and childrens toilets, as well as tea and coffee making facilities, a large indoor area and a fenced, covered outdoor play area. Down the other end of the building is another large indoor area, toilets and a fully equipped kitchen. “With ample parking and a convenient location, the centre is perfectly positioned for members of the local community to come together for activities like playgroups and mothers groups, Karen said. The space is available for hire between 9.00am - 11.00am and 2.00pm 4.00pm Monday to Friday. Anyone interested in using the rooms should contact either Karen or Gae at the Centre, which is located on Page Street, on 5438 7311.

Walk in her shoes and help lift women and girls out of poverty

Mia with daughter Sophie

Millions of women and girls in developing countries spend hours walking everyday to collect what their families need in order to survive: food, water and firewood. Mia Luckman from Glass House Mountains is committed to walk in the shoes of poor women and girls to help break this cycle of poverty. Mia signed up to do the ‘Walk In Her Shoes’ challenge to highlight to people the plight of women and girls in many developing countries who walk further to provide for their family than she has to do to walk her eldest daughter to school. “I walk around four kms in total each day from home to school and back again, twice a day, but these women and girls walk over six kms every day!” Mia said. CARE’s Walk In Her Shoes challenge asks participants to walk 10,000 steps per day

from March 12-18, and get sponsored for their efforts. Funds raised will go towards CARE projects that provide community gardens and clean water close to homes and help women and girls spend more time in school, earning an income and helping their community to overcome poverty. Mia, a consultant with The Body Shop, which is also a partner in the challenge, is hoping to raise as much as possible to contribute to this worthwhile cause so any donation no matter how small or large is welcome, simply go to www.walkinhershoes.org.au/mia_luckman and click on ‘donate now’. CARE Australia is an international humanitarian aid organisation with a special focus on working with women and girls to help communities overcome poverty. Find out more at www.care.org.au

Bright ideas for Beerwah

Sunshine Coast Council said it has been swamped with great suggestions from residents about the future of Beerwah. Council started comprehensive community engagement with the town last year to help develop a bright future in Beerwah. The things people love about Beerwah are its semi-rural lifestyle; it’s location between the coast and Brisbane, and all the green open spaces. Some of the suggested changes include Beerwah becoming a visitor destination in its own right, and more pedestrian crossings and pathways to connect the town. There were also some ideas about how to make the town even better such as; • the creation of a civic town heart with more shops and cafes, improved parks and green linking connections; • encouraging locals and visitors to stay longer; • more events, festivals and markets, as well as increased arts and cultural offerings;

improved medical facilities for doctor surgeries, dentists, x-ray facility and a Medicare branch; • More community services including Centrelink and employment help. To find out more about what the people of Beerwah said go to council’s e-newsletter or you can see a hard copy on the town’s noticeboards or pick up one at the Beerwah Library or post office. Focus groups made up of community members are using this information to work up a draft Action Plan which will be presented to the people of Beerwah for feedback. All this work is part of Council’s Place+ program, which is all about creating the Sunshine Coast’s future. It focuses on Council and communities working together to make great places on the Sunshine Coast even better. Beerwah is the first place to benefit from this program, which covers a range of issues including infrastructure, business and community development.

Bald Knob Road open for residents The land slip affected Bald Knob Road remains open to local residents while work continues. Deputy Local Disaster Coordinator Andrew Ryan said traffic controllers were on site and one lane would be opened to local traffic only. He said some work has been done to control the slip area and allow vehicle access to local residents onto Bald Knob Road from Maleny Road.

Dental Excel is proud to be a part of the MARLEY DENTAL GROUP

On-site traffic controllers will monitor the site throughout the night and report to council if the situation changes.” Mr Ryan said a section of Bald Knob Road around 2km from the Landsborough Maleny Road had dropped by about 300-500mm as a result of last week’s heavy rain. Landsborough bound traffic is currently being detoured via Old Gympie Road while Maleny bound traffic is being detoured via Maleny Stanley River Road.

It’s that time of year again, school photos! The anticipation is full of mixed emotions. Will that pimple stay a tiny hidden dot or explode into a giant red mountain on the day? How will my photo look with braces? Will my hair behave on the day? Here are my top tips to make photo day a lot easier. Top tip 1: Smile! The million dollar smile is what everyone wants to see. I have a confession to make. Last year I had braces (now gone – yay!) and was a bit self-conscious. I didn’t want people to remember me with them so ended up doing one of the silliest smiles possible. Now I have had to live with that silly photo all year I really wished I just ‘embraced the braces’. Top tip 2: Don't forget! There is nothing worse either turning up at school with the wrong uniform or having a bad hair day. A good way to avoid the rushed hair do and crinkled uniform is to get all your stuff ready the night before! It's a huge time saver! Top tip 3: Presentation! Usually photos are at the start of the day but if not, try not to roll in the mud. I remember in primary school I carried a comb around with me all morning so my hair would be nice for the photo, I'm not saying you should carry a hair brush with you all day, just wait until after photos to get dirty! Those are my top three tips for school photo days; hopefully they’ll help you. And don't forget to rock that million dollar smile.

Local schools clean up! Students at Beerwah State School joined thousands of other volunteers last Friday to clean up their backyard... the school playground. Students donned gloves and hats and cleaned up the school playground. The day was promoted by the school’s environmental club – the Beepers. The students have been learning about the importance of keeping their environment litter free and our waterways clean.

Karli Goad and Renae Blacker

Pride and perspiration

When Glasshouse Country Christian College held its annual College Clean up, it was one hour of spectacular competition as sporting houses competed in a fight against filth. The weapons of choice were brooms, bins, buckets and brushes but the most powerful tool of all was attitude. Secondary students scrubbed, scoured, swept, sponged, and swabbed until the perspiration Lachlan Hensley, dripped from their foreheads but still they Dylan Eldridge and continued on until the job was done and the Ryan Harrison hour was up. Points were given to each sporting house with the winning team of the day announced as Sinai. Their secret weapon was Year 12 student Kyle Burrows who put more physical effort into rallying the sporting house with rousing war cries than any amount of scrubbing would entail. Individual efforts were rewarded with a coveted gold ticket which entitled the student to a pizza and soft drink lunch, cooked and served by the Hospitality students. By the end of the hour, the race against refuse was well and truly won. Students were hot and a little tired but the gleam on their faces was due more to pride than perspiration. GCCC sparkled!

Landsborough State School Landsborough School students volunteered to help clean up the township to make their town a cleaner and more beautiful place to live in as part of annual Clean Up Australia Day celebrations last week. The students made it fun as they collected the rubbish on a hot day in the local parks and Railway Station on Friday afternoon. Gary at the Railway Station came to the rescue and offered the students a bottle of cold water each. Much appreciated, thanks Gary.

Tech Time IT review

Web Review

with Tara

Attention Iphone users – have you backed up? There are (apparently) over 3.4 million iPhone users in Australia! And this number is growing every day. It seems that many iPhone users don’t back up their phones – even though it is a very simple and easy task! The benefits of backing up your phone cannot be stressed enough! If your phone is lost, damaged or stolen – your data is gone with it. Backed up information includes purchased music, apps, photos, videos, device settings (eg. wallpaper, mail, contacts, calendar accounts), app data, messages, ringtones and more. There are two ways to back up your iPhone: 1) Back up to your computer Plug your iPhone in to your PC or Mac and fire up iTunes. Simply click on the device name in the left panel and then the scroll down to the backup section. Click on 'Backup to this computer' and hit ‘Sync’ in the bottom right corner. 2) Backup to iCloud After you have enabled Backup on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch in Settings > iCloud > Backup & Storage, it will run on a daily basis as long as your device is: • Connected to the Internet over Wi-Fi • Connected to a power source • Screen locked You can also back up manually whenever your device is connected to the Internet over Wi-Fi by choosing Back Up Now from Settings > iCloud > Storage & Backup. Backing up to iCloud is free for users with iOS 5 (the latest version). If you have an older operating system on your phone, you will need to choose the first option above.

Is 2012 your year? (cont’d...) Welcome back to our discussion of how to get the most out of your business website. Today we continue with our top tips: 5. We Have Contact What is the point of displaying your goods and services online if your potential customers have no way to order them from you? You need to ensure that your customers know who you are and how they can reach you. Having your phone number displayed in large and obvious lettering is a good start. As your customers are already on the web, why not also give them an easy-click link to allow them to send you an email? Be careful when providing links to your email address, however. Most conventional email links will expose your address to potential Hackers and Spammers who have systems that automatically trawl the internet for available email addresses. As such, you should encode your email address, or hide it behind an online enquiry form, which will allow the user to type a quick message on your website itself, then click a 'Send' button to deliver the message to you. Online enquiry forms are also perfect for collecting potential customer data. Generally the user will have to enter his/her name, phone number and email address before being able to send you a message. This allows you the opportunity to collect and archive that data for your own marketing purposes, though you should always give your users the option of keeping their details private and unsubscribing from any mailouts you may send them in the future. You should also feature a Privacy Policy statement on your site, disclosing the ways in which you intend to use any personal information that your site may collect.

President

Patricia Shaw Bank Manager - Commonwealth Bank

Unfortunately I was unable to attend the first Chamber meeting for 2012 but it was great to see from the attendance book how many people were there. I am however really looking forward to catching up with everyone at the upcoming ‘free’ networking evening at the Beerwah Hotel on March 21 from 5.30pm and I would like to invite all business owners along. You do not have to be a member of the chamber but this will give you an opportunity to see what we do, and to talk to existing members and get some interesting information from Rod Richards. Thanks to Rod Richards Consulting a mentor for the State Government ‘Small Business Solutions’ program who has kindly sponsored the evening. Rod will do a brief presentation about government subsidised training opportunities for small business, which no doubt many of us could benefit from. From the many business people that I talk to, I know how important it is for them to feel confident that our area has the best government representatives possible. Planning is moving full steam ahead for the 2012 Glasshouse Country Sustainability and Garden Expo to be held once again at the Beerwah Community Hall and Turner Park on Sunday, May 27. If you have not been involved in the event before and your business is about health and wellbeing, gardening, environmental sustainability or fresh produce then you should take up the early bird pricing available for getting your registration completed early. If you would like to know more about the event or to access a registration form go onto the website www.s-g-expo.com.au Hope to see you at one of our upcoming meetings. Networking Meeting – Wednesday, March 21, Beerwah Hotel, 53 Beerwah Parade, Beerwah (see ad below). General Meeting – Wednesday, April 18, Glasshouse Sports Club, Steve Irwin Way

2012 State election - Caloundra candidates Allan McKay

Christine Anthony

Mark McArdle MP

Greens Candidate for Caloundra Allan and Lenore McKay have three children and six grandchildren. Allan was born on a sugarcane farm in North Queensland, and grew up in Brisbane, attending state primary and secondary schools. Tertiary study took Allan and the family to Switzerland, Melbourne, and Fiji. Now settled in Caloundra in their award winning sustainable house, incorporating excellent energy efficiency and sustainable materials, Allan and Lenore enjoy living on the Sunshine Coast with its amazingly beautiful coastal ecosystems and stunning hinterland. Allan worked for 13 years with the federal government in administrative roles in Brisbane, Darwin and Alice Springs; 15 years with The Uniting Church in Australia as a parish minister and consultant (a few years of that time during the 1980’s in Glass House, Beerwah, Landsborough and Mooloolah) and 18 years in private practice as a remedial massage therapist in Caloundra. He is an active foundation member of TAPP (Take Action for Pumicestone Passage) and is secretary of Caloundra Greens, and a delegate to Queensland Greens State Council. He is a member of Australian Red Cross and has for many years been an active volunteer with Red Cross Emergency Services, responding to the devastation caused in North Queensland from Cyclones Larry and Yasi, and last year in the floods in Central Queensland. It was while flying over the flooded Central Queensland coal fields that the extent of environmental risk from coal mining became obvious. He has since visited the Tara coal seam gas fields and heard from affected people of its social and environmental impacts.

Australian Labor Party for Caloundra I currently live in Pelican Waters and am 65 years of age. I have lived in Caloundra, Beerwah, Little Mountain, and Pelican Waters for over 25 years, and have loved every day. I have two adult professional children, who live and run their businesses in Caloundra. Over the years I have been actively involved, as a member and volunteer of many clubs and organisations within our community. With a nursing background and my involvement within the community, this has enabled me to gain a close insight into Caloundra family life and social issues. In my past campaigns, I was part of the Queensland Labor Government’s push for improvements to the Caloundra Hospital, completion of the south end of the four lane, Nicklin Way Road, improvements to and moving the Police Station and Magistrates Courts out of Bullcock Street into a safer area onto Caloundra road. Whilst these changes and improvements have been important for Caloundra, I believe there is much more to be done, and this can be achieved if I am elected as the State Labor member for Caloundra.

LNP Member for Caloundra, Shadow Health Minister Mark was first elected Member for Caloundra in 2004 and is a tireless campaigner for addressing real issues that affect real people. As a qualified solicitor and mediator, Mark has extensive legal knowledge and skills that have been paramount in liaising with authorities on residents’ behalf. Important townships such as Beerwah, Landsborough, Glenview and Mooloolah Valley are included in the Caloundra electorate, which he visits regularly. Together with the LNP, Mark is determined to help residents who are struggling with cost of living pressures inflicted by Labor through skyrocketing electricity and water bills, and government fees. He has campaigned on many issues including better parking at Landsborough train station, better curb and channeling in Caloundra Street, Landsborough, better signage in Beerwah township, and the Bruce Highway draft study between Caloundra Road and the Sunshine Motorway. One of the Sunshine Coast’s most senior politicians, Mark is the Shadow Minister for Health. Mark is passionate about implementing effective health services throughout Queensland, which is important for the future of the Sunshine Coast. He has been a strong advocate for keeping the Caloundra Hospital emergency department open, which Labor plans to shut down in five years. Mark is a strong supporter of community groups and works closely with the Chamber of Commerce, schools and pensioner groups to discuss key issues in the community. Mark has proudly lived on the Sunshine Coast for 23 years, and he and his wife Judy enjoy currently living in the electorate. They have a grown-up family.

Community Group Updates

Glasshouse Country SES

Contributed by Patricia Bradford, publicity officer

Contributed by Dave Erbacher

Recently a combined group of Glasshouse Country SES members and DERM (National Parks) carried out some works on the Mt Tibrogargan climbing track. Due to time and recent heavy wet weather the track indicators had faded badly and vegetation, particularly near the top, had grown significantly. The group of six persons climbed the mountain, checking the current route and repainting and adding extra indicators where necessary. Closer to the top, soft vegetation was trimmed to allow better track indicator visibility. Similar work was carried out almost 12 months ago and has been called a great success as only one rescue had been carried

Glasshouse Country View Club Contributed by Pauline Clarke, Publicity Officer

The proposed cruise along the Pumistone Passage on Wednesday, March 7 had to be postponed due to inclement weather. This outing is now rescheduled for Wednesday, May 2. The next View Club meeting will be held on Wednesday, March 21 at the Glasshouse Sports Club where we will be entertained by renowned broadcaster and journalist Jamie Dunn. In addition we will be celebrating International Women’s

Eugne Craddock from DERM and Roger Winton from Glasshouse Country SES out due to persons wandering off the main track and getting into difficulties. Recent heavy rains have eroded more of the climbing track and there was quite an amount of small rocks about the track. The mountain continues to be very popular with recent reports of over 40 vehicles in the car park area one weekend. Day; please turn up, wearing purple or green, at 11.00am for an 11.30am start. Anyone who would like to join the View Club would be most welcome. Please contact Joy on 5439 9049 or Lydia on 5438 7894 who will be pleased to supply further information. View clubs are a valued part of the Smith Family which is a national, independent children’s charity committed to helping disadvantaged Australian children by unlocking opportunities through education and support.

Turning on the TV is not as easy as to join Toastmasters Contributed by Martine Goedhart

Peachester District Horticulture Society Inc

I don’t know the children of my 84-year-old neighbour Jane, but they must be among the cruellest people on the planet. They came from Melbourne to visit her for her birthday and gave her a 40 inch, HD TV then went home without telling her how to program the remote. My teenage son programed mine and wrote it all down, so when my neighbour asked me to help, I said “sure” grabbing my son’s instructions. “Okay,” I said, “the first thing is to turn on the power.” I pressed the button. Nothing. I pressed it again. Nothing. “Oh, that’s right,” I said. “You have to select TV first.” Nothing. “Would this help?” Jane said. She was holding another remote, the one that came with the TV. I pressed power and the set turned on, still no picture, just a screen that said, ‘Set Up for viewing’. I found the Set Up button, pressed it and then was looking at a screen that said, ‘select four-digit code for your electronic device.’ I looked in the manual

under Set Up. ‘To view the code for the first time, press 1 once. Count the number of times the TV blinks and write down the number in the leftmost TV code box on Page 11. Repeat Step 3 for the remaining digits’. This is when I thought I might be part of a secret government experiment to see what it takes to drive people insane. That feeling increased when I saw that before I could input the code, I had to find it, which meant cycling through 17 possibilities by repeating the process above every time. I actually went through all 17 codes. Nothing worked. This meant I would have to search for the code in the TV’s database by executing a series of steps even more than the last. I called my son. “Can you program Jane’s remote? I’ll give you 20 bucks.” “Dad I’m at my girlfriend’s. Make it 40,” he said. “Deal.” 'Extract from TM magazine John Cadley' No such frustration when you visit the Glasshouse Country Toastmasters. Call us on 5496 9855 or 5494 0161.

President John Innes welcomed all present to the AGM and guest speakers were introduced. Our first guest speaker was Glen Kolpak from Energex who spoke about ways of minimising power usage by making simple changes to the way we use electricity. He also touched briefly on a community benefit fund. This enables local community groups and schools to access financial assistance towards energy conservation, sustainability and environmental projects. (More information about this can be found on energycc.com.au or call 1300 360 209). The next guest speakers were Riki Fulton and Jacinda Chisholm from Biosecurity Queensland. Riki spoke about Myrtle Rust which is a serious fungal disease that affects plants in the Myrtaceae family. This includes Australian natives such as Lilly Pilly, Bottlebrush, Tea Trees, Eucalyptus and many others. Myrtle Rust cannot be eradicated and has already been found in our area. Riki and Jacinda then showed a selection of digital images to show what signs to look for and the effects it has on plants. More information can be found on www.biosecurity.qld.gov.au. Guest speakers were thanked and presented with a small gift. Patron Margaret Ferris was invited to take the chair for the election of office bearers. After the election Margaret thanked the outgoing committee and welcomed the new committee. Margie Jennings gave an update on progress of the school kitchen gardens. Planning for the kitchen is underway and we’re encouraging interested people to become involved. On behalf of the PDHS, Rob Morris donated some lengths of calico for aprons, etc. A short general meeting then followed. The competition bench for 2011 was won by Coral Beutel. The Irene Owen Trophy was presented to Coral by Denise Owen, daughter of the late Irene, congratulations. Money raised from fundraising activities during the past year will be donated to the following organisations. Q.I.M.R., Hear and Say, Rosies, Angel Flight, R.F.D.S., Rural Fire Brigade, Fred Hollowes Foundation and Queensland Cancer Fund. Please note: Our next meeting will be held in the Peachester Hall on Thursday, March 22, 9.30am. Rob Morris and Jeff Bodley will be entertaining us with highlights of their trip to Taiwan. Visitors are welcome. For more information phone 5496 9169.

Sharon is a well known local, having grown up in Glass House Mountains and starting her career as a teenager working at Matilda (known then as the Chicken Bar). After having her family, Sharon moved into the ‘Club Industry’ and with 20 years experience, including administration and operations, as well as working in a managerial role, Sharon has a great understanding of what makes a successful club. Since taking on the role of Manager of Club Glasshouse she has overseen many changes. These include the renovations, having a commercial kitchen installed, and setting up a separate dining room and coffee shop, as well as modernising the look and feel of the building. “Being set back off Coonowrin Road means patrons can enjoy peace and tranquility looking out over the grass bowls green and surrounding bush land, we’re definitely a hidden treasure,” Sharon said. The club is open every day from 10.00am with lunches served Wednesday – Sunday and evening meals Wednesday – Saturday. Keno is available, additional poker machines have recently been installed and there is bingo on Friday morning. So whether you want to meet new people, catch up with friends or just need some time out on your own, this is the place to come. If you haven’t been to the new Club Glass House then come down and see for yourself.

Debbie Willis

After working for other financial institutions and the corporate sector of Bank of Queensland, Debbie and her husband Jeff decided to open a branch of Bank of Queensland in Beerwah in 2003, in the community in which they live. Debbie believes one of the real strengths of Bank of Queensland that their clients appreciate is that the staff don’t get moved around, which enables them to develop great relationships with their customers by getting to know them as individuals. “While we are small enough to offer personal service, we are still able to offer a wide range of banking products and services including insurances,” she said. “We provide local friendly service and we are the only Bank in Beerwah that opens on a Saturday morning. As working women, I believe that while it is critical for us to be good time managers, I think most of us need to remember to have a little time out for ourselves, and of course a sense of humour doesn’t go astray. “If you haven’t been into our branch and met our team, we are always there with a hello and a smile so come in, we would love to meet you.”

Robyn Koschel is just one of the friendly faces you will see if you drop into the Glass House Mountains News Agency these days, as she and husband Allan have recently purchased the business. And while Robyn is on a fast learning curve in terms of ‘product knowledge’ she is confident that the seven and a half years of business management experience she has working with RSL Aged Care will come in very handy. Robyn believes that no matter what business you work in, being successful is all about providing excellent customer service and making sure that your customers leave the store satisfied. What she is really enjoying is the opportunity to get to know the regulars and what people’s needs are. “This means if we don’t have the items in stock we will be able to order them in specially,” she said. Robyn loves the township of Glass House Mountains where she and husband Allan have lived for the past 18 years and she is really excited about running a business which is such a vital part of any community. If you drop in before 9.30am you will find Alan behind the counter (and yes he’s still running his plumbing business).

Lynelle Clem

For years Lynelle gave her friends and family massages when they were in pain and they always told her what healing hands she had. So six years ago she decided to do some formal study and become qualified. She now has a Diploma in Remedial and Bowen Therapy, Trigger Point, and Deep Tissue Massage, and specialises in Sport and general wellbeing massage. Lynelle believes in the mechanics of the human body treating injury and pain – for clients who are looking for a relaxation massage she encourages them to see Jenny at Hinterland Body and Soul. “I massage quickly to relax the whole body to be then able to treat the main muscle injury or pain the person is feeling. Some clients prefer Bowen Therapy to treat the same type of injury without the deep tissue massage and get great results,” Lynelle said. “What I love most about my work is seeing my clients walk out the door without pain and with a smile on their face, seeing them happy – makes me happy. “My advice to other women is to think of ourselves first, as women we tend to put other need’s first, and remember to believe in yourself and your abilities,” she said.

She believes that her experience as a small business owner / operator combined with 25 years working in State Government has given her a solid understanding of the values held by those living rurally. Jenny has a great appreciation of other's views and opinions and has demonstrated the ability to not only listen, but to bring people and groups together to resolve issues for the best outcomes. “I don't take favours; I represent everyone equally and without bias but I also understand that at the end of the day, we have to make decisions and we have to be accountable for them,” she said. “I find with any decision made it is essential to weigh up the checks and balances and be fair and equitable to all. Riana’s journey to her current position has definitely been an international affair. After emigrating from South Africa to New Zealand in 2003 she decided to become a jeweler and completed a three year jewellery manufacturing course. In 2006 she then made the move to Australia and was really pleased to gain employment with Flair Jewellery whose owners encouraged her to become qualified in computer aided design and to complete a Frontline Management Course. When the Flair store was established in Beerwah in 2010 she was offered her current position of Manager of the store. “At Flair Jewellery we specialise in designing the exact piece of jewellery which you have in your mind for that special occasion,” Riana said. “There is always a jeweller in store and my particular interest in computer aided design will ensure that you are happy with the end result. “Our business is unique because we never have sales – no never! We enjoy offering great quality jewellery at the best possible prices every day of the year,” she said. When Riana isn’t working she likes to spend time with her husband and their two gorgeous dogs – Honey and Benson. She has also recently completed a Reiki course. Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship

This week I have to head to Brisbane a few times on that crazy highway with thousands of other commuters heading off to work as they do every day, probably wishing they could stay home on these rainy days and watch a movie or curl up in bed with a good book instead. Mmm. Movies vs. work. A tough call. Have you ever noticed that most good stories follow the same pattern? They start off introducing the main characters in a setting where everything is going great. Their world is at peace and everything is running smoothly, until all of a sudden they’re thrown into turmoil and have to fight their way out of some desperate situation, become a hero and finish on top as the good guy who always wins. I had it pointed out to me recently that it seems like this pattern for recognising a good story is actually hard wired into us. In fact the story of humanity as portrayed in the Bible follows the same pattern. Starting at the Garden of Eden, through to the mess humanity finds itself in with sin, then Christ stepping in and saving the day, ultimately bringing about the happy ending of us being reunited with

Raffle Results

The great thing to ponder is the fact that God has given each of us a story’s beginning, promises the happy ending with Him (if we so choose Him of course), but gives us the privilege of filling in the scenes in between. The question is, are we going to create a story with our lives that we would want to see again if it was played back when it is completed? Will we be a hero or a villain? Will the challenges we face form us into someone the audience would admire or want to ignore? Will my final scene end in a climax with God saying to me, ‘Well done my good and faithful servant!’ or some other way? May we live each day with God as the producer, the Holy Spirit as the director and Jesus as the editor (who graciously erased the dodgy scenes for us on the cross), so when it’s all done, others will want to see the re-runs after we’re gone! See you in Church where we can learn more of the script!

Telstra mobile reception strength Sometime in the last month our Telstra mobile reception has gone from good to very poor. We are experiencing low to no reception in places where previously on my Glass House Mountains property we received good solid reception. I run a business and the call drop outs and missed calls are affecting my business in many ways. Speaking with my neighbours, I hear from them exactly the same situation (a major sudden drop in signal strength) Positives first. My most recent call to Telstra has resulted in the full refund of my monthly fee ($79.00). The initial two calls though, were not a good a result. It was impossible to talk to a tech who actually new anything about what was happening and when and if it would be fixed. Promises of a call back from someone who actually had some information and knowledge have not been forthcoming. The last call elicited the reply that I had not supplied another phone number and the technicians will not call you on the affected number! Anyway I surmise that a transmitter has been adjusted or some other works carried out that have lowered the strength at least to parts of Glass House Mountains. If you are affected I would urge you to phone Telstra on 132 200 to report it. They will ask questions to establish whether it is your faulty mobile phone or their transmission strength. To get past this and establish it’s their signal strength and not your mobile phone, swap your sim card to another phone before you call so you have already done the test they will ask you to do. Again please call and report to Telstra on 132 200, it’s the best way to get our signal strength fixed. As long as you have recorded the fault with them you have a good chance of negotiating your bill to nothing (again phone 132 200) at the end of the month. That’s the best call to action for them!

Re: Bike path at Beerwah

People power is needed

The hinterland, when compared to the rest of the Sunshine Coast, and Queensland for that matter, accommodates a higher than average youth population. Therefore we have a greater need and responsibility to provide our youth with the facilities and connectedness that enables them and us to function as a healthy community. As a whole we need to work towards connecting these people and their families with educational and community based sporting facilities, as it is well documented that transport related social exclusion is the cause of many of the major social problems inherent within today’s communities. This year Council allocated 6.2 million dollars to pathways and pedestrian facilities and this is to be commended. However, Council need to prioritise which sample group has the greatest need and then act to ensure that funding is fairly allocated across the coast in areas where it will best serve our youth.

In response to Brad Boustead's letter GCNews March 7, Mr Boustead you are correct, the western end of Glenview Road is long overdue for reconstruction and a pedestrian pathway. To be able to do this there has to be road realignment and land resumptions. I must admit this has been in the too hard basket for some time, the cost of such a project would run into millions of dollars. No doubt there are other roads across the SCC that are also in need of serious attention. Residents need to speak up and say what they don't want so funds can be made available for the issues that are important to them. I have no doubt Glenview residents will say they get nothing. All rates contribute to the upkeep of libraries, sporting fields, public swimming pools, the maintenance of our beaches and parks etc. I do believe that this council and previous councils may have lost sight of where monies could have been spent more wisely. But frankly, where these funds have been spent, residents in those areas lobbied all councillors. My advice to Mr Boustead, vote for one of the five candidates and work with the successful candidate. Get a petition going stating the urgent need to upgrade Glenview Road. I had asked for such a petition at meetings in Glenview many times without success. A councillor competes with several other councillors all wanting a piece of the pie which is never big enough to go around. Being able to stand up in a council meeting and present a petition will help in achieving the necessary funding required. Remember there is power in numbers. This is my two bob's worth.

Clean up thanks On behalf of the Clean-Up Australia Volunteers who volunteered for Roys Road and Bells Creek Road we would like to extend our thanks to the local businesses who supported us and made what we did seem worthwhile. IGA in Beerwah supplied bottled water and Daleys Turf donated the use of vehicles and supplied a sausage sizzle on completion of our rubbish collection. We collected a huge pile of rubbish along with our helpers from a 4WD Club. Thanks again to our sponsors and many thanks to the 4WD Club who lightened our load.

Incorrectly stated In a recent letter to the Editor (GCNews February 29), I incorrectly stated that Division 1 candidate for the upcoming local government elections Ann Ross had studied business degrees. This is not the case, and I wish to clarify that comment. Ann’s business related qualifications include a full TAFE Diploma of Business and a Graduate Diploma with the Australian Institute of Company Directors. Many councils have made it mandatory for incoming councillors to undertake this graduate diploma to ensure they possess a thorough knowledge of fiduciary duties and compliance rules associated with their governance role. Please note it was not my intention to mislead readers as to Ann’s background, it was an innocent oversight.

Dhreen Sheppard-Keam Beerwah

On the matter of pathways Over 15 years ago I wrote to Council asking them to install a pathway/bikeway to enable my children to walk and ride to school. Both Karen and I walked quite some distance as schoolchildren (I still walk at a fast pace to this day) and wanted our children to be able to do the same. It's healthy, builds self reliance and keeps some cars off the road. Fifteen years later it's still not safe or reliable for children in the Glasshouse Country townships within reasonable distance (say up to 3kms) of schools to walk or ride to school. We can change that. The fact is that the network of pathways is incomplete and this needs to be fixed. We need to be able to walk from one township to another or get from the growing residential developments to schools or transport hubs. The background to this is that we have huge amounts of development coming to our area, with council projecting that Beerwah, for example, will double in size in two decades. In addition, the new city-sized developments of Caboolture West, Caloundra South and Palmview will channel more traffic through our roads into Glass House, Beerwah and Landsborough. If we are to maintain our country character and atmosphere amidst this growth, we have to ensure that walking around our towns is a real option. We can start from the schools, installing crossings where necessary. The crossing near Glasshouse Country Christian College is a good start, and an example of what we need to do. We can then complete a basic pathway connection between the townships, starting with Glass House, Beerwah and Landsborough.

It’s that time of year when we introduce you to our School Captains for 2012 and share their thoughts about what being a School Captain means to them.

Middle School Captain – Emily Oliver

Senior School Captain – Alix Murdoch

Senior School Captain – Rae Austin

Being a leader means being able to set a good example to others, and having the opportunity to work with them in the school.

It’s about representing the group of people you are leading, being a good role model, and mentoring and helping them to develop as individuals.

Being a leader is not about a label or a badge; it’s about being a good role model and leading by example.

Primary Captain – Stefanie Ferris

Middle School Captain – Kate Fraser

Senior School Captain – Sarah Davis

Leadership for me is all about helping others and the school. Another thing is being a role model and showing younger kids how to be one also. Being in leadership is something I’ve always wanted to happen. It’s good to give everything a go. At first being a leader was a bit scary but now I’ve gotten used to it, it’s rather exciting!

Being a Middle School Captain will be challenging to fit in with my Year 9 studies, cheerleading commitments, dance practice, church and friends but I am looking forward to it. I especially want to role model what it means to be a Christian in everyday life. I’m looking forward to leadership opportunities such as encouraging more participation, making speeches and carrying a floral tribute for ANZAC Day.

When I first found out I was going to be College Captain, I found it a little daunting but now I am really happy about it. As College Captain, I want to make a difference and leave GCCC (when I graduate) an even better school than it was when I began. I also wanted to be a leader because I want to be the kind of person people come to with problems and ideas or just to talk to.

Empire Day 1912 The Open Day at Bankfoot House on Sunday, May 27 this year will celebrate a unique anniversary, the centenary of the climbing of two of the Glasshouse Mountains by the Clark sisters from Brisbane. Not only did they climb the mountains – two of the three Clark women also rode their bicycles to and from Glasshouse along Gympie Road, which was at that time little more than a track through the bush. This feat was achieved on the Empire Day long weekend in 1912. At that time Empire Day, May 24, was the birthday of the late, empire-building monarch Queen Victoria, although by 1912 the monarch on the British throne was George V. Empire Day had been initiated in Australia in 1905 and for many years was celebrated with patriotic gatherings in towns and cities around the country. Officially Empire Day became Commonwealth Day in 1966, but by then the patriotic activities of May 24 had been eclipsed by the fun-filled activities of Cracker Night. The Bankfoot House Open Day 2012 will feature all things to do with bicycle riding. There will be an official welcome to recreational cyclists, a display of vintage bicycles, penny farthing demonstrations,

a cycle maintenance workshop, a best decorated bicycle competition and a bicycle tyre derby. Also on the day there’ll be historic mountain climbing photographs from the Bankfoot collection, genealogy advice from the Caloundra Family History Association, a presentation from the Peachester History group and memorabilia from the Australian Teamsters Hall of fame. Descendants of the Clark sisters will be on hand to help celebrate the 100th anniversary of the epic cycle ride of the Clark sisters and their male companions from Brisbane to the Glasshouse

Every day for the month of March, Kelly, Andrea, Kirstee, Kevin, Lorna, Michelle and Mel will step up on the treadmills in the Fitness Matters gym in Simpson Street and each run around three kilometers in their quest to show their support. At the end of the month, they hoped to have run 500kms, and raised their goal of $5,000. To support their events, check out their page at my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au\ fitnessmattersrunsforacure

En-lighten your load Contributed by Sally Price, mental health support worker While the Sunshine Coast Hinterland in a quiet and picturesque place to live, latest studies indicate that depression and other serious mental illness is on the rise and soon half of us will suffer a serious mental illness some time in our lives. While we like to think that mental illness will never happen to us, sometimes a series of life events can lead to incapacity. There is support in the hinterland community through government, private and non-government organisations funded by government. However, one way to strengthen and nourish our mental health is by meditation and yoga. In coming to an understanding of our mental state, we can equip ourselves to deal with the hardships or emotional upsets that life will always deal us. In the last year a new retreat centre has been established at Glasshouse Mountains. In the Tibetan cultural tradition, Dzogchen has been practiced for many thousands of years. Through an unbroken lineage since then, reincarnate teachers or Rinpoches have made these teachings available to anyone who is sincerely interested and prepared to do the work on themselves.

Out and About Joint concert a huge success Contributed by John Jennings

Organisers of the recent joint RSL fund-raising concert have described the event as a huge success. The concert was the first major function held at the Beerwah-Peachester sub-branch since renovations were carried out; the sub-branch combined its resources with the Glass House Country sub-branch for the special music and comedy event. Three-year-old Cadence Henry of Glass House, who has a complex medical condition, was a special VIP guest with part-ticket sales and sponsor donations totalling $1,680.00 going to the Cadence Foundation to cover her substantial, on-going medical costs. Six top Sunshine Coast entertainers provided their services free for the concert at Beerwah on Tuesday night. Ken Bennett, fresh from cruise ship entertainment on the high seas, brought his wife and comedy partner Denise together with long-time friend, rockabilly singer Ian B MacLeod; the entertainers have recently settled in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. In turn, Ken and Ian called in keyboard player Angus Woodhead of Beerwah, Ralph King, drummer, of Montville and Brian Blackett, bass guitarist, of Alexandra Headland. Cadence’s parents, Grayson and Angela Henry thanked the audience, organisers, entertainers, the RSL committees and staff for their “wonderful support”.

Mooloolah Primary School’s bush tucker and veggie gardens

Bush tucker and vegetable gardens are prominent in the minds of the Year 7 leadership team at Mooloolah Primary School. The old veggie garden, originally put together by the Kooee Kids Club and MRWL is being resurrected. The garden will grow all sorts of vegetables for the school tuckshop and create a bush tucker section in and around the rainforest for educational purposes. Their teacher, Chris Lowe plus four TAFE students and MRWL are helping with the project. Any parents of the Primary School keen to help please contact Chris, directly at the school.

Clean up Australia Day

Clean Up Australia Day was a huge success in Mooloolah township. Twentynine volunteers turned up to pick up rubbish and we collected 12 recycle and 22 other bags, including a jimmy bar, bicycle and mattress. A big thank you goes to Tanya Tighe, Glenn Phillips and Cynthia Jones for managing the morning and providing the barbeque afterwards.

Landslips and lots of rain

The landslips at the headwaters of Mooloolah River are causing havoc along the whole system. At a breakfast in Brisbane for ‘Save Moreton Bay’, it was discussed how quickly marine life is disappearing and where there were huge oyster beds in Moreton there are now only a few dotted here and there. Stabilising land slips at the headwaters of these rivers can help enormously to assist in keeping our oceans clean.

Throughout the month of March there have been a few changes. Amber is taking a step back due to her pregnancy, while Dawn has stepped up to full time work. So please be patient with me if I am still finding my way around the site. I have to acknowledge the fabulous assistance I have received from all here at Mooloolah; everybody has been most helpful in my endeavour to find my feet. It continually amazes me who gets involved in Landcare, it crosses many parameters and many differing backgrounds, and it is great to see the groundswell of landowners who recognise that we can do something worthwhile and that our input is not irrelevant, no matter how small.

Plant of the month

Petalostigma triloculare Quinine Bush, Long-leaf Bitter Bark ‘Petalostigma’ refers to the petal like branches of stigma of the flower and ‘triloculare’ refers to fruit with three locules or chambers. This is a lovely tree that occurs naturally on the rainforest margins, it is one of those small trees that is adaptable in the home garden and can be utilised as a screen or even us as a feature in the landscape.

These plants grow well on stony or sandy soils and I have found it also grows well in clay. The 3-5m shrub has a spreading habit which makes it a good screening plant. Leaves are up to 8cm long, elliptical and drawn out to a point. The upper surface is dark glossy green and the lower surface is dull greyish in colour with a covering of fine hairs. The fruit is a 10mm long capsule with thin orange to red flesh, which explodes to release the seeds. The flesh is very bitter to taste. Flowering occurs right now, summer to autumn with males and females on separate plants. www.gcnews.com.au

CHILDREN’S EFFECT ON BORROWING CAPACITY Families looking to borrow, trade-up or invest in property have much to gain from seeing their Smartline mortgage broker, with the assessment of living expenses for those with children varying considerably from lender to lender. Living expenses are assessed as increasing with the more children you have under 18 and will, in turn, affect how much you can borrow. Assessment of borrowing capacity All lenders have a formula they use to assess a borrower’s living expenses. For example, one lender allows $1105 per www.gcnews.com.au

month for a single applicant, $2032 for a couple, an extra $299 for one child and another $598 for the second child – that’s roughly $300 per dependent child and equivalent to holding a credit card with a $10,000 limit. Looking at a basic example of a couple with a combined income of around $95,000 a year, no debt other than a limit of $5000 on their credit card, they could borrow a maximum of around $450,000 if they have two children, versus $550,000 with no dependent children. If there are other factors

that add to the complexity of the scenario, such as a personal loan, Family Tax Benefit payments and child maintenance payments, borrowing capacity will vary quite a bit. The difference between lenders Lenders’ assessments of a borrower’s living expenses vary considerably, and are constantly changing. For example, a couple with three dependent children and no debt could be assessed as having additional children’s living expenses of as much as $1375 a month with one

lender and as little as $900 a month with another. Equally, a couple with two children can have their living expenses assessment vary from as much as an additional $933 to as little as $598. Advice and organisation can be invaluable As well as having a thorough understanding of lenders’ Call Adviser Teresa Harrison policies, your mortgage T: 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098 broker will be able to compare home loans and give www.smartline.com.au/tharrison Australian Credit Licence Number 385325 you an idea of how much you can borrow – and what you can potentially do to increase that figure. You Said It Information you need know before Council election As a service to voters of Div.1 I would like to let you know about some of your voting options so you don’t miss out on having your say. The local government elections have some different rules to the state election. If you are not going to be in the Sunshine Coast Council area on April 28, you don’t have the option for absent voting, (i.e. voting on Election Day at a polling booth outside of your Local Government area). If you are working or can’t attend a polling booth between 8.00am and 6.00pm on Saturday, April 28 you can vote Pre-poll, this Opens 9.00am Monday, April 16 and Closes 6.00pm Friday, April 27. The Electoral Commission of Queensland will have an office for pre poll voting. Another option is by application for a postal vote. Applications can be made immediately but the Commission cannot forward ballot material until after the close of nominations on Tuesday, March 27. Applications close 6.00pm Wednesday, April 25. The cut-off date for return of postal ballot papers is 6.00pm Tuesday, May 8. The postal vote application form is available on ECQ's website under Local Government Elections or you can call Voters' Helpline 1300 881 665, to download the application form or have an application posted to you. Re: Bob Carr, Australian Foreign Minister The appointment of Bob Carr as Foreign Minister is yet a further example of the devious tactics the Federal government will adopt to get whatever it wants. Technically what has been done does not convene parliamentary procedure, but morally it stinks. Here is the story. Rudd resigns as Foreign Minister, Arbib resigns from Senate, the PM and the faceless men approach Bob Carr to take the Foreign Minister’s position. One problem, Bob has never been duly elected into Gillard’s Federal parliament (or for that matter any Federal parliament). Problem solved, we will appoint Bob to Arbib’s vacated seat in the Senate, no matter that good old Bob never even nominated as a candidate at the last Federal election. Bob accepts the position. Done and dusted! The people of Australia now have a Foreign Minister representing us abroad, who had never been elected to Federal parliament but has simply taken taken over a position previously held by an elected member. To make it even more ludicrous Bob has never been in the Federal ranks and has no proven experience in Foreign Affairs. He was a State Premier, full stop! Is Bob representing the constituents of Mr Arbib’s seat? But how can Bob represent these people when they have never voted for him? It’s a joke! If you do not have to be elected to parliament, why is it that we mere mortals are compelled by law to vote for nominated candidates at a duty constituted election? J.T Weeks Beerwah 34 |

Peachester cemetery stories Contributed by Helen Page

Cemeteries are often hailed as a valuable source of names and dates for family and local history. However it is not always recognised that on another level they have much to tell about the life and times of our ancestors. To our generation the number of infant and child graves in the Peachester Cemetery seems appalling. One can’t help wondering about the grief experienced by pioneer communities where so many families suffered some loss. A brief comment in the ‘District Notes’ section of the Brisbane Courier, February 11, 1905 records one such family tragedy: ‘PEACHESTER, Thursday. Sympathy is expressed for Mr Bruno Otto, whose little son Oscar died suddenly last night. A post mortem examination will be held this afternoon. The funeral will take place at Peachester Cemetery tomorrow.’ This was the first burial in the cemetery, and sadly, it was not an unusual event. The register lists 12 funerals for babies or children within the first 10 years. As members review the cemetery records in preparation for our current project to name the unmarked graves, we have been reminded about the high incidence of fatal accidents, often associated with wagons, trucks and timber cutting. Names like Tomlinson, Breton, Vieritz, Butler and Stirling figure on this tragic list. The Nambour Chronicle, December 16, 1932: ‘FOUND DEAD: YOUNG MAN AT PEACHESTER. Rolling Log Inflicts Fatal Injuries. Mr Waldemar Breton, aged 25 years, a timber getter residing in the Peachester district, was found dead shortly after midnight last Friday... it is surmised that he was loading logs from a ramp onto his motor lorry at the time, and the skid at one end slipping, the timber came down and struck him... Deceased, who was known as ‘Wally’ to his wide circle of friends, was a very industrious man, single, and had resided in the district practically all his life. Great sympathy is expressed to the widowed mother, Mrs M Breton, and brother, who reside at Crohamhurst.’ Peachester today is close to several large centres, with relatively easy access to medical services. But imagine what it was like to live in such areas when roads were little more than bullock tracks, and a trip down the range was a major expedition? A sick child, a difficult birth, a farm or timber accident, these were common occurrences, part of pioneer life, and we see the evidence in our cemetery that many tragic deaths resulted. When we feel inclined to complain about busy roads, hospital waiting times, and other annoying aspects of modern life, it is instructive to visit the local cemetery and reflect that our generation has much to be thankful for.

EMFMI President, Dave Brace with a healthy 20cm Australian Bass from last year’s stocking How time flies. It’s been just over a year since Ewen Maddock Fish Management Inc released close to 30,000 native fish fingerlings into Ewen Maddock Dam in its inaugural year. The last time the lake had been stocked was a decade ago where trophy sized Australian Bass over 55cm can still be caught from the efforts of EMFMI predecessors. Other native fish such as Golden, Silver and Spangled Perch along with Saratoga also call Ewen Maddock home with the fish stocking group also hoping to stock Mary River Cod into the lake when they become available. The fish stocking group have just released as many fish fingerlings again this year into Ewen Maddock Dam and have also, only recently, taken on the responsibility of re-stocking Baroon Pocket Dam which also saw its first lot of fish fingerlings released into the lake since the year 2000. Every month EMFMI meet socially to fish either Ewen Maddock or Baroon Pocket Dam, fishing through the morning after an early start and firing up the barbecue by lunch, telling a few yarns. Last weekend was no different, except due to the group’s busy schedule, it had been some time since the group had fished Ewen Maddock Dam. With last year’s fish fingerlings now being of a size to target, EMFMI purposely set out to see if their hard work to raise funds for these fish fingerlings had been worth it. When the fingerlings were released 12 months ago they were only 30mm long, those same fish now range from 150mm to 200mm in length and took a liking to bait presentations and to hard bodied lures. Twenty Bass and 15 Perch were caught and released for the morning’s session and all fish looked to be very healthy which is very encouraging. EMFMI members are extremely excited at the prospect of both fisheries being a draw card for anglers in the very near future. If you are interested in becoming a member of EMFMI, or would like to sponsor the group in any way or just want to know their meeting times or calendar of events, you can contact the fish stocking group via their website. www. ewenmaddock.com.au www.gcnews.com.au

PISCES February 20 – March 20 Advice you may receive may be quite conflicting, so this would be a time to go with your gut feeling and make your own decision. At the weekend you can be very restless and impulsive. Your moods may be unpredictable so take care when communicating with those who are close to you. A change of car is indicated, as well as a short holiday. ARIES March 21 – April 20 Where romance is concerned this can be a time of celebrations and a lot of social life. CANCER June 22 – July 22 This is a very important time for you to keep focused on what you want and where you are going. Things should go pretty well your way. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 You may be inclined to rush into everything, so take your time with important decisions, and also with your driving. Finding time for yourself will be important. You’ll also need to be tactful dealing with authority figures. A promotion is possible. Pressure can be put on you, but by taking it easy you can succeed. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 This is not a good time to take things to heart. You may feel quite sensitive and a bit rejected. Take things very slowly, as this is not the right time to make important decisions, especially where love relationships are concerned. There can be a change in your work environment. New car likely. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 A private talk with a work mate can give you some valuable information. However this is not the time to mix business with pleasure. Opportunities to buy or sell property can be very strong now. Excellent news coming regarding a child. Lots of changes at this time can be made in the home. New car is possible. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 You are on a new career path. Unexpected business developments are in your favour. Someone from the past can come back into your life. Confusion around a relationship will now start to clear. Freedom will be important to you at this time. Try and take your time with decisions. A new job situation can arise out of the blue.
