Hi Everyone This week we have a special feature that will take you just outside our readership area – to the lovely town of Woodford. A few weeks ago when I was doing the MCing for Andrew Powell’s Volunteer morning tea I met a number of community people from the whole of the Glass House Electorate and one of them got me thinking about how close our townships really are. With Woodford just a stone’s throw away from Glasshouse Country we thought it might be nice to remind people what a great destination it is for a day trip. If you are looking for a Sunday drive this weekend you could head out and enjoy the atmosphere of their country market held in the main street from 6.00am – 1.00pm and then grab a coffee and some lunch at one of the many cafes in the area.

Or if you missed the Maleny Show you can still catch up on some of the traditional fun of a country show the following weekend when they are holding their 100th Show at the Woodford Showground. Take a look at our feature on pages 23 – 26 and if you feel like a bit of a drive and a lovely day out, head over to Woodford.

Talented football playing sisters head to England

Having a once in a lifetime experience is always exciting but to share that experience with someone you’re close to is even better. That’s why Cassie and Tegan Buhmann are thrilled they were both invited by the Australian Professional Football Academy to tour England and Scotland in December. Only 12 players from around Australia were invited to join the team. The 12 day tour will include playing football and attending coaching clinics at Professional Clubs including Rangers, Hibernian, Manchester City, Sunderland and West Ham United. Cassie, 19, said, “I’m looking forward to the coaching and to see how intense the training is and all the skills that they show.” Tegan, 15, says she can’t wait to verse the teams over there. “And to see how well they play compared to how we play - the level of competition,” she said. “I’m also excited to watch the games over there too. We get to watch EPL (English Premier League) games.” Between them Cassie and Tegan have been playing football for 19 years. Nearly every day they spend playing or watching football. They have played for Bee-Gees since they were small and they now play for Sunshine Coast, Tegan for the Under 16 Sunshine Coast Rebels and Cassie for the Sunshine Coast Women’s Premier team. It’s not only this experience which has helped formed their impressive skills - football is in their blood. Both their mum, Sharon, and grandmother played football for Bee-Gees as well.

Tegan and Cassie Buhmann Cassie and Tegan find being sisters involved in the same sport is more about support than rivalry. “I think it’s really good,” Tegan said. “We always go down to Bee-Gees and kick the ball to each other, and give each other input and help each other out. We always tell each other how we go after a game and if we can improve in some areas.” It’s this close bond that will enhance their overseas trip. “Having someone there with you that you actually know to share the experience with, it’s even better being sisters,” said Cassie. Their mum is understandably proud. “My dream was to go to England just to watch, but they get the opportunity to get involved over there, that’s why I’m trying so hard to get them over there, this will be their only chance,” said Sharon. The girls are currently trying to raise funds for the trip and any support would be appreciated. If anyone would like to sponsor them or make a donation ring 5494 1440 or 0414 699 194.

With work now in full swing on the redevelopment of the Glass House Mountains town centre, there has been plenty of discussion among locals about whether or not the community will get value for money for the work that is being completed. And more importantly, will the work bring about significant improvement to the area. GCNews has spoken to a number of locals to see what they think?

We believe that this work would improve pedestrian safely, particularly with the additional lighting at the Visitor Information Centre. Congratulations to Cr Anna for attaining additional funding for the project so the whole project can be completed at the one time. Having the new streetscaping combined with the grounds around the Visitor Information Centre will create a wonderful village feel for both residents and visitors.

Steve Ralph, The Australian Teamster’s Hall of Fame Glass House Mountains This project is ‘insanity gone mad’. I believe at least 15 car parks will be lost, which will disadvantage the shopkeepers. The township should have been left the way it was. What needed to be done were a couple of minor alterations that would cost only between $5,000.00 and $10,000.00. Signage and maintaining the painting on the roads – that’s what was needed. Signage has been needed for years to stop people driving up the wrong side of Bruce Parade, after

they’ve gone around the roundabout. Now they’re ripping out established trees and pulling up pavers to put down concrete – it’s madness. What businessminded, intelligent person would want to lose car park spaces and spend $700,000 doing it?

Beerwah RSL & Citizens Memorial Club Inc A SPECIAL GENERAL MEETING WILL BE HELD AT THE GLASS HOUSE COUNTRY BOWLS CLUB On Tuesday 5th July, 2011 AT 7PM TO CHANGE THE INCORPORATED NAME AND AMEND THE RULES M KILKENNY - SECRETARY www.gcnews.com.au

Rebecca Campbell, Glass House Mountains “I reckon it costs too much, but it’s going to beautify Glass House. While they’re doing it, it’s a pain in the neck because there’s no car parks and a lot of the staff are having to park at the train station. There’s no bike rack going in so all the bikes are going to be lying across the footpath and knowing my luck I’ll trip over.” Yvonne Bell, Consulting Advisors “It’s certainly going to be worthwhile. It’s supposed to be finished in 12 weeks and it is very painful at the moment, but I believe its pain we just have to endure. On the whole the project managers have been pretty quick with us, lately, not initially, so there’s some modifications they’ve agreed to make that could have been set in place initially. They told us it’s going to be done in four stages which is quite good, so the interruption process will be shared around – about a month for each group of premises. The best thing that we can hope for is that the residents stay loyal to the shop owners and are prepared to walk the few extra feet Yvonne Bell to do business. ”

Andrew Grigor, Glasshouse Country Meats “It’ll be good when it’s finished, it’s just the parking’s a bit of an inconvenience. We have just got to put up with it until it’s finished I suppose.” Lisa Redshaw, Post Office “I’m a bit annoyed about losing a few car parking spaces but hopefully in the end it will be worth it and our town centre will look much more inviting to locals and tourists alike. It’s about time they spent some money on some Hinterland towns.” Kay McDonald, Serendipity “I think it’s wonderful for the town. I think we really needed it because that roadway there was quite dangerous for people walking across. And I just think it will be a great asset for the town, even though we’ll be inconvenienced for a little while, that doesn’t matter.”

Annette and Graham were nominated by their neighbours, Maria Sutton and Dillon Cunning. ‘They are generous neighbours who look out for all of their neighbours,” they said. “They lend tools, take washing off when we are not home. They cook us meals and always offer a smile when they see their neighbours. They also look out for the young children in our neighbourhood.” Unfortunately Dillon was not able to be present. The meeting also featured an interesting talk by John Innes on keeping native bees.

She will have a shipping container in her front yard at Peachester for the next couple of months where she will be able to store the donations. If you have any suitable items to donate you can call Leisa on 0415 248 793.

She also spoke about the needs of patients outside the major population centers. The Cancer Council has accommodation lodges in Brisbane, Townsville, Rockhampton, Toowoomba and one to open soon in Cairns, where regional patients and their families can live, at no cost, while accessing diagnostic and treatment services. During 2010 17,336 bednights were provided. The Council provides a Counselling Service, runs a Helpline which is the first point of call for those seeking information or support, gives study grants for young Queenslanders affected by cancer, runs a free daily bus service in Townsville and on the Gold Coast for patients and carers, and has an annual seminar in conjunction with Queensland Children’s Cancer Centre to help teachers, guidance officers, counselors, nurses and chaplains in the support of school children coping with cancer. In the 50 years since its inception, millions of dollars have been raised for Cancer Council Queensland. Community support and fund-raising are essential as the organisation receives no Government funding or subsidy. Rhonda‘s enthusiasm for the work of Cancer Council Queensland gave a new impetus to the members of the Beerwah Charity Sports committee who were among those present at the gathering. Planning for the day – Saturday, August 27, at the Beerwah Sportsground – is gathering momentum and a new and exciting program is shaping up. Your support of this local fund-raising day ensures the continuation of invaluable research and better outcomes on the way to an eventual cure. Please mark your calendar now.

The tragic event that unfolded at a home in Beerwah Parade last week has no doubt shocked and distressed people across the Sunshine Coast, but it has really hit home to locals – in particular those that know mum Caroline Moss and her young daughter Georgia. On Tuesday afternoon there was plenty of raw emotion flowing through our community with the focus being on what had happened and why, but as the days have moved on, those close to Caroline are now focusing their energy

on what they can do to help the mother and daughter rebuild their lives. The explosion meant that they have lost everything they owned, so they now face the challenge of starting again from scratch. Knowing the generosity of the Glasshouse Country Community I am sure locals will dig deep to help out. A bank account has been opened at ANZ Beerwah, where Caroline works. The Caroline Moss Donation Account was opened after a number of enquiries from the local community.

Beerwah High’s NAIDOC Day

This year’s NAIDOC Day activities on June 22 at Beerwah State High School will give those attending an exclusive viewing of never before displayed Gubbi Gubbi artefacts dating back to the late 1800’s. The school was successful in obtaining funding from Queensland Health for a NAIDOC Fun Day, which will embrace the theme of anti-smoking. Students from Beerwah High School and local primary schools have been invited to participate as well as hundreds of Indigenous students from other coast high schools. Some of the workshop activities students and their families can undertake are Indigenous games, Indigenous / hip hop dance workshops, boomerang painting, didgeridoo workshops, mural painting and damper making. There will also be a Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Indigenous Community to acknowledge the efforts of Beerwah High to ‘Close the Gap’.

Beerwah resident Peter Voigt admits to being a little nervous in the lead up to his first major leading man role in Caloundra Chorale Theatre Co’s latest exciting production The Little Shop of Horrors, but he says all nerves will disappear once he steps onto the stage. Although Peter has been in eight other musicals and a play including Cats, The Boy from Oz, Les Miserables and Harvey, this latest role has been a learning experience for him. “Usually in a show I’m having a lot of fun at rehearsals socially, but in this one because I’m on stage all the time I’m being quite strict and thinking about the character even when I’m not acting,” he said. Peter is part of an exceptional cast who have been working tirelessly. For those who haven’t heard of Little Shop of Horrors it involves a man eating plant, great music, outrageous characters, and a hilarious story line. Peter said it was easy to step into the role of ‘nerdy’ Seymour and he says he was able to draw from his own experiences at school to help get into character. “I was probably a little backward when it came to girls, like Seymour, at school I was shy. So I wouldn’t say I’m having to stretch too hard. “I find it a lot easier to go nerdy in that direction, rather than to go flamboyant in the other direction because it’s a lot easier to pull a character in rather than go right out there.” Peter’s creative talents don’t stop on the stage. He also writes poetry, is learning the guitar and paints, recently taking out a People’s Choice Award at the Art Festival at Glass House Mountains School. He is also able to utilise his creative side at Beerwah State High School where he works as a teacher aide. “I love that too, as I get to use creativity there as well, helping kids,” he said. His life now is far cry from the 15 years he spent in the accounting industry. “I’m glad circumstances have led me to where I am now. I know I don’t want to go back there.” Little Shop opens with special price previews of $20.00 on June 22 and 23 at 7.30pm. Performances: June 24 and 25, July 1, 2, 7, 8 and 9, at 7.30pm and June 26, July 3 and July 10 at 2.00pm. Tickets: adults $29.00, concession $26.00, FOC and members $24.00. Where? Hazard reduction burning Forestry Plantations Queensland (FPQ) will soon begin hazard reduction burning in the Beerburrum State Plantation Forest. The burns are part of an ongoing campaign to protect Beerburrum’s forestry plantation assets and adjacent communities. FPQ’s Beerburrum Forest Manager, Mr Stan Ward said cooler temperatures and generally lighter winds at this time of the year allowed FPQ managers and employees to begin fuel reduction burns in a planned program to reduce the risk of summer wild fires in the area. “Annual summer growth of underbrush requires that we begin hazard reduction burning now to reduce as much as possible the risk of wildfires later in the year when any fires would burn more intensely,” Mr Ward said. “Every attempt would

Mike Turner, Beerwah State High School Chaplain said, “it’s a major fundraiser for our Chaplaincy at Beerwah, it probably raises close to a third of our annual income.” Mike said anyone can go along including individuals, families, groups of friends, company teams (who are welcome to wear their business shirts) and even younger players are encouraged with a student prize on offer. Other prizes awarded at the end of the day include longest drive, nearest to the pin, best costume and the winning team, who will receive a fabulous Westpac trophy. Registering will be at 10.00am for hit off at 11.00am which will be a shotgun start (for the uninitiated that means all holes are played from the start). The cost is $55.00 each player or $220.00 for a team of four. That includes lunch, 18 holes of golf and the chance to receive great prizes. If you would like to attend it’s important to please RSVP by June 22. Please contact Warwick on 5494 9351 or Mike Turner on 5436 5333.

To this end, FPQ will inform the public when planned hazard reduction burning ceases for the year, after which the public’s assistance will be sought in reporting fires. “However, if the public are concerned about any fires in or threatening our plantation forests, they should contact 000 to arrange the appropriate response,” Mr Ward said. Tower fight continues for Landsborough residents Last week, Glasshouse Country News brought you the story of the fight by Landsborough residents to stop an Optus mobile phone tower from being built near the town centre within a residential area, close to a kindergarten and not far from the primary school. Anne Eglinton, one of the residents who will be directly affected by the proposal, said that since the story went in the paper, the response from the local community has been absolutely terrific. “I’ve been collecting signatures for the petition, and people have been coming up and saying how terrible it all is and that they don’t want the phone tower radiation so close to the children. “The people at the IGA, the school, kindergarten, childcare centre and the laundromat have said that so many people have been coming in to sign the petition. It’s very heartening to know that others care so much about the area and the health of the local children,” she said. Although the written submissions have already closed, Ann Husband from the Landsborough Area Community Association wants people to know that they can still make their feelings known. “Although the submissions period is closed, the 12 councillors and the mayor will ultimately decide whether the application is approved or rejected.

“The more people who ring, email and write letters to all the councillors and the mayor, but especially the two local councillors – Cr Anna Grosskreutz and Cr Jenny McKay – telling them that they don’t want the potentially harmful radiation emitting tower in their neighbourhood, the more notice they’ll have to take of these community views,” she said. Cr McKay – within whose division the tower is planned to be located – said that she is 100 per cent against the idea of the tower. “Having lived through a cancer scare, I’m definitely against anything which could potentially be harmful to people’s health. “I’m very happy to help the concerned residents in any way that I can before the matter is presented to the general meeting of Council. If the petitions are given to me, I’ll table them at a Council meeting so that the views of the community are on the public record and can’t be ignored,” she said. Ann Husband wants readers to know that the Landsborough Area Community Association is supporting the fight to the very end. “I battled against Optus when they wanted to put a tower in Gantry Road and I think it’s disgraceful that they’re trying it on again,” she said.

Boomajarril Celebrates 40th Birthday On July 31, Boomajarril celebrates its 40th birthday. Officially opened on July 31, 1971, Boomajarril is the Landsborough Girl Guide Brownie Cottage. The Girl Guides started in Landsborough in July 1964, meeting in different places such as shops and leaders yards until Landsborough Girl Guides was donated the land at 1 Coonowrin Street, Landsborough by Clarry and Rene Aldous in 1969. After much fundraising, the old Woodford police station residence building was purchased and moved to the land to use as their Brownie Cottage. It was named by the brownies of the day, ‘Boomajarril,’ which means ‘home of the little people’.

Boomajarril has only had its own committee since 1985, for 13 years before that it was looked after by the Landsborough Girl Guides. Landsborough Girl Guides are on the same site as Boomajarril and after a few hard times now have a reopened working Girl Guide District since October 2007. Boomajarril now hosts three units. The birthday celebrations will start at 9.30am and finish at 3.30pm.

How far have your vegies travelled? Make a Difference

Our community gives thanks Contributed by Mike Turner (Beerwah High Chaplain)

On Saturday, June 4, eight local churches held the inaugural 'Community Thanksgiving Service' at the Beerwah Sports ground. The weather was gorgeous with clear skies all around. The event kicked off at 3.00pm with Laser Tag for the youth in the area. As the smell of barbecued sausages, onions and coffee drifted across the field, the combined church’s youth band warmed up. At 5.00pm the Thanksgiving Service began with involvement from local ministers and pastors; a special DVD presentation was shown looking at ‘People we are thankful for’; ‘What we love about Glasshouse Country’ and ‘Thanking God’.

During the evening there was a special segment where our VIPs came on stage and we thanked our police, fire, ambulance, SES, rural fire brigades and our politicians. It was fantastic to have this opportunity to honour these amazing people. This activity was really well received, and organisers are keen to run this again later in the year. A big thanks to Trish from Community Recycling Inc, Holly from Hinterland Community Development Association, Jenny from Armesto's Transport and Gary from Suncoast Scaffold. Thanks for helping us get this event off the ground. Next year, this event will be bigger and better - watch this space for news of the 2012 ‘Community Thanksgiving Service’.

Rate rise to be kept under inflation rate

Sunshine Coast Council looks set to keep any rate rise in this month’s budget below the rate of inflation. At a special budget meeting last week council gave its strongest indication yet that rates would be kept as low possible. Finance Portfolio Councillor Chris Thompson said despite its costs rising markedly – the power bill alone has gone up by 13 per cent – council would try and absorb most of the increases. “We know people are doing it tough – and we’re trying to play our part by keeping downward pressure on rate rises,” Cr Thompson said. “It’s not easy making ends meet at the moment, which is why we’ve done everything we can to protect residents. “At this stage the rate rise looks to be about 3.5 per cent – which is below the inflation rate for South East Queensland. “Costs for councils in this part of Queensland have actually gone up by 7.5 per cent, but through responsible financial management Sunshine Coast Council will pass on less than half of that. “Council will also spend a record amount on infrastructure – $190 million – in the next financial year, and more than $1.25 billion over the next decade.

Cans4Films Festival

Network Video Mooloolah is proud to again present the 2011 Cans4Films Festival which provides tangible hunger relief across Australia. The Cans4Films Festival returns to Network Video Mooloolah after three successful years as a national campaign with statistics speaking for themselves. Each year, over two million Australians rely on food relief at some stage; worse still, over one million of those people are children. With a clear need to provide a practical solution, Network Video takes great pride in presenting the 2011 Cans4Film Festival throughout July. As an event delivering food to those who need it most, contributors say the experience is easy and fun. Throughout July, simply head over to Network Video Mooloolah and donate a can of food to get a free weekly movie rental. Better still, donate two cans and get three free weekly rentals. For instance, you might drop off a can of beans, and watch the antics of ‘Mr Bean’ for nothing; or donate a can of soup to laugh along with the naughty ‘Superbad’. With customers more than happy to donate cans of food for a worthy cause, it is hoped the Cans4Films Festival will see hundreds of cans at the Network Video Mooloolah store by the end of July. The Cans4Films campaign focuses on local communities supporting and assisting their local populace and as such, the donated cans of food are sent directly to local food relief charities for distribution in the donating stores’ local areas. Joining with the 300 plus participating Network Video stores across Australia, this is a national campaign that helps local communities. “Over the last three years, we’ve seen that the Cans4Films Festivals brings out the best in Network customers who generously donate cans of food to provide hunger relief to many Australians. We look forward to even better results in 2011,” said Keran Wicks, Managing Director of The Network Group. For more information, head to www.cans4films. com.au and for more information about Network Video, visit www.networkvideo.com.au You can pop your donations into Network Video Mooloolah at 12 Jones Street Mooloolah or phone 5492 9999 for further information. www.gcnews.com.au

Just a few short weeks ago Dee Stephens from Mooloolah Hair Studio put out the call for the local community to help support the Grantham Feel Good and Support Day on June 4. If the long list of thank you’s is anything to go by, it’s clear the local community heard Dee’s call and answered with a generosity equal to the courage and endurance shown by the Grantham community as it tries to rebuild after the devastating floods. The sun shone in the sky and hearts as the ‘Feel Good and Support Day’ provided haircuts, manicures, massage, foot massages, face painting, live music, morning tea, sausage sizzle, raffles, jumping castle and much more. For many Grantham residents it was the first time they had taken a break to pamper themselves, according to Dee. “A lot of locals were being presented later in the day at Gatton with hero and bravery awards, so they felt awesome to be spoilt and go off looking beautiful. Some had never ever had their nails painted before,” she said.

Co-ordinators Julie Johnson and Dee Stephens When Dee started planning the Grantham 'Feel Good and Support Day’ she hoped it would make residents feel good and give the kids some fun. The smiles on the faces of the Grantham residents proved that goal was achieved. Dee would like to thank all individuals, families and businesses who volunteered, made donations or contributed items and made the day a huge success. The day might be over but the Grantham community is still very much on Dee’s mind. She said she would love Mooloolah State School to come on board and connect with Grantham State School and create some projects together for the children. She would also love to see locals offer weekend stays to Grantham residents. “And give them a taste of our beautiful coast, as they are all exhausted and at breaking point,” Dee said. If you would like to help contact Dee on 0421 315 876.

Dee would like to thank the following: Mooloolah IGA, Mooloolah Meats, Mooloolah Pharmacy, Mooloolah Medical Centre, Mooloolah Dental Surgery, Mooloolah BP, Mooloolah MPO, Mooloolah Post Office, Mooloolah Seafood and Burger Bar, Mooloolah Beauty Spot, Mooloolah Hair Studio, Mooloolah Stockfeeds, Mooloolah Veterinary Surgery, Mooloolah Newsagency, Mooloolah Hardware, Mooloolah Swim Club, Mooloolah Shearing Shed, Hairjamm and their Juuice hair products, Louise’s coffee van, Captain Rob the pirate, Fox Trot Removal, Thunderbird Café, Vicious Vintage, Cotton Lane, Eastcoast Aluminium, Coastal Castles, Nambour Party Hire, Glenview BP, Shine Auto Car Wash, Caloundra Powderkote, Allan Bryce Sheet Metal, Supa gas, Mooloolah Community Centre, Elite Tours, The band Montserrat and Vince Ferraro. And all the volunteers who helped in many ways including the staff at Mooloolah Hair Studio, volunteer hairdressers, the convoy of families who helped, Mooloolah locals who cooked, all the Mooloolah locals and residents from surrounding areas for supporting and donating to the sausage sizzles and raffles. Bankfoot House Open Day ‘Thank you for a great history lesson.’ ‘I enjoyed the history – a must to preserve.’ ‘Congrats – impressed with all you have done in the house.’ These were just a few of the many comments written in the Visitor’s Book at the highly successful Bankfoot House Open Day on June 5. At the front gate Ann welcomed visitors. Hundreds of people explored the displays in the grounds and around 280 people took a guided tour of the 140 year old State heritage-listed property with one of the volunteer guides Elaine, Ron, Jocelyn or Jo. Steam Train from Brisbane coming into Glass House Station on Saturday, June 4 Robyn or Ethel entertained visitors by playing the pianola - with great skill and stamina. Linda, Julie, Sharmayne, Brett and Tod were busy all day in their pioneer ‘kitchen’, producing numerous hot scones and a stew in camp ovens. In the marquee, members of the Caloundra Family History Association helped family history researchers and, nearby, Helen and members of the Peachester History Committee held their monthly meeting. Jill and Jodi sold mementoes, including ‘button men’, hand-made fans and seedling bunya trees. In the back garden, Keith showed the antique chaff cutter to enthusiasts. During the house tours, the 140 year old red cedar lunch table, four-poster beds, hairpins, ‘paper lace’, a range of irons and washing machines through the eras, bullock yokes, and implements from the timber-getting days all generated great interest.

On June 4, passengers from Brisbane left the steam train at Glass House Station and were transported to Bankfoot House to experience the panorama of the mountains and to learn more of the historical significance of this heritage-listed property. The Friends of Bankfoot House are grateful to all those people who helped in the lead-up to a successful weekend. Thank you. The Open Day was part of the ‘Kero Lamp’ Heritage Trail in Glasshouse Country, within the wider Glasshouse Country Festival.

Caloundra Family History

The year is going fast and while it is not quite Christmas yet, it is time to mark in your diary the date and time of another kind of food fest. The Beerwah Catholic Ladies Annual Soup Luncheon is on Friday, July 8 at the Mary MacKillop Centre, Peachester Road. As in past years there will be a speaker, Jocelyn Morgan, President of the Caloundra Historical Society, who will share her knowledge and experience in genealogy, an area where more and more people are interested in tracing their family background. The day will start at 10.30am with our speaker Jocelyn and lunch will follow at 12.00noon. There will be a wide variety of soups plus slices, tea/coffee, all for $5.00 per person. This has to be an unbeatable bargain. Proceeds will go to the St. Vincent De Paul Winter Appeal.

In April, the Caloundra Family History welcomed guest speaker, Chrissy Fletcher from the Adopt-a-Digger Project. Chrissy so inspired members to become involved in her project that the group has now initially agreed to ‘adopt’ 30 Diggers, with possibly more being adopted in the future. Like other groups interested in history, our members feel this is just one small way our Sunshine Coast Diggers can be honoured and remembered for generations to come. After a successful May meeting complete with birthday celebrations and launch of the Gregson & Weight CD-ROM index of records, our group will be pleased to welcome back to the podium, a very popular guest speaker, Dr Jon Prangnell. At the general meeting on Thursday, June 16, he will entertain and inform us on another of his projects. As Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the School of Social Science, UQ, he told us last year about the excavation of the North Brisbane Burial Ground for the Suncorp Stadium. This time, he will speak of ‘Life at Paradise’ and his team’s interesting finds at the 19th century gold mining town in the Burnett River Valley. All members and their guests, as well as visitors, are welcome to attend. The group’s rooms and library are open for research every Saturday and the third Thursday of the month, from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Every other Thursday of the month the rooms are open for the full day, from 9.30am to 4.00pm. Specialist interest groups for UK countries, as well as Germany, convene for a couple of hours each month at various times and members use the meetings to learn new searching techniques, network and assist each other in their research. All activities conducted by the group, including general meetings with guest speakers (1.30pm to 4.00pm on third Thursday each month) are held at the Guide Hut in Arthur Street, Caloundra. Enquiries for all events, including meetings, research and specialist groups are welcomed by contacting Jocelyn on 5494 9807, Valerie on 5437 3879 or June on 5493 2679. The group can also be reached by email at caloundrafamilyres@y7mail.com for information and CD purchases.

Women’s Conference

Campbell Newman in Glass House

Nominations are open for the first ever ‘w.comm forum’ to be held at Parliament House in Canberra on August 21 and 22, 2011. Women aged between 18 and 25 are invited to take part in the two-day forum, which aims to find ways to encourage more women to get involved in democratic processes and politics. Ten women from across the country will be chosen to participate in the forum with female politicians from Australian parliaments. Participants will be flown to Canberra where they will take part in a range of activities and workshops at Parliament House while it is sitting. Those interested in participating need to send in a presentation about themselves and can use text, photos, audio and video to tell their story. Nominations can be made at www.wcomm.org and close on June 24.

Funds for Aged Care

I recently announced additional funds of $955,000 for aged care providers in Fisher under the Home and Community Care (HACC) programme. The HACC programme provides specific support for the frail and aged, and to young people with disabilities, to enable them to remain in their own homes with the support of their families. The majority or people prefer to live in the comfortable and familiar surroundings of their own home – rather than moving into a nursing facility – and this programme assists them with maintaining a certain level of independence so they can stay at home. The aged care organisations in Fisher to have received the funds are: Blue Care Caloundra - $294,397, Glasshouse Country Care - $96,951, Integrated Living Australia (Sunshine Coast) – Bokarina - $132,142, Kabbarli Home and Community Care (Moffatt Beach) - $49,533, Lavally Lodge Day Activity Centre (Beerwah) - $4757, Ozcare – Sunshine Coast (Currimundi) - $143,831, St Andrew’s Care (Caloundra) - $28,888, Suncoast Transport Care (Warana) - $203,427.

Seniors Forum

The annual Sunshine Coast Seniors Forum will be held for the 11th year in late July. It will include various expert speakers – including Shadow Minister for Seniors Bronwyn Bishop - and displays from around 30 organisations that assist seniors in the community. To RSVP for the event or to find out more please contact my office on 5444 4888.

It truly was a pleasure to have Campbell Newman in the Glass House electorate recently, even if it was only for a short time. Probably one of the busiest men in the state at the moment, we had the opportunity to host Campbell for a cocktail function at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. Over 100 people turned out to meet Campbell and hear him talk about his vision for Queensland. The feedback I have received since his visit has been incredibly positive; people are amazed at the energy he exudes and his enthusiasm for Queensland. The people who attended really enjoyed themselves and the opportunity to share a beer with Campbell and get a better understanding of where our state is headed under an LNP led Government.

Out and About

No doubt about it, this year’s Glasshouse Country Festival has been the best ever. The Sustainability Expo was a huge success and a huge thanks to Bob McLean who works tirelessly to get this day up and running. I was honoured to be able to participate in the GMAN tree plant at the Page Street Bushland Reserve and also spend time at the open day for Bankfoot House. I was also very fortunate to officially open the Beerwah Lions Art and Artisan Show during the festival and I was truly inspired by the displays and artwork by some of our local budding art enthusiasts. To cap off a jam packed week in the Glasshouse region I was ‘Principal for a Day’ at the Glass House Mountains State School. While I was there I was able to officially present the school with a new Queensland Flag, take part in parade and also have morning tea with teachers and parents. Thank you to the school and Principal Ms Somers for welcoming me so warmly. Hats off to our principals, teachers and school administrators – they have such an important and often challenging job.

Triple Zero Biggest Morning tea

Thanks to GCNews for promoting our Triple Zero Biggest Morning tea, held on May 22 at the Beerwah Pool. I am delighted to inform you, that we managed to raise in excess of $1550.00 for this very worthy cause. Achieving such a fantastic figure was a direct result of a huge team effort, and the great support from all those that attended. Jo Wolfe Peachester

Sick of being brushed aside

We are bitterly disappointed with the totally inadequate responses we have recently received from Council and our Divisional Councillor (Division 1) regarding a disgraceful decision to remove trees we have planted along the Roys Road foreshore of Coochin Creek. After years of discussions with a Council officer and submission of a revegetation plan with the help of DERM, and in line with Council policies

of revegetating the margins of waterways, we planted 300 native trees on the Roys Road foreshore in front of our properties. We received two letters from Council officers stating that Council had ‘no objection’ to our revegetation activities. Following an uncompleted negotiation concerning set back from the bitumen, Council changed its mind, and at a closed Council meeting, a motion was put that all our plantings be removed. We were then given one week to remove the plants. On December 17, 2010, two trucks, five utes, 15 workers, three Council officers, one independent botanist, and two police arrived to enforce the removal. At no time did our Divisional Councillor approach us to discuss this issue with us and at no time before the secret Council meeting were we approached with any concerns about our revegetation activities. We are completely at a loss as to why 300 healthy appropriate native plants, approved by DERM, SCEC and even Council, planted in accordance with sound environmental principles, on the foreshore of a marine park of RAMSAR importance, which would have prevented erosion and protected mangroves and an aboriginal midden, paid for and tended by us at no expense to the public, would be suddenly deemed unsuitable by Council. The only explanation for the decision was ‘for good order and community relations’. We have no idea what we did to breach good order and community relations and have twice asked Council for an explanation only to be brushed aside as we were after our letter to the Councillor last week. It would appear that the only hope of justice we have is through the Ombudsman. But we believe the community deserves an explanation – if for no other reason than to caution them about the importance of choosing the right candidate to truly represent our community in the next election. William and Ann Phillips Coochin Creek

Warming gesture

She and my dad Noel Cox decided they’d hand deliver them all to the school once finished. They made the trip to the school in the last couple of weeks. I think all up she knitted over 65 beanies so that every student received one. I know she doesn’t want any recognition for what she’s done, because that wasn’t the point of the exercise - but I think she deserves it!

Belles were a treat

Alison Moffat Landsborough

Beerwah Catholic Ladies Auxiliary offers a big thank-you for the community support at their recent ‘Cup of Tea for Cancer’ morning and particularly the contribution of the Singing Belles giving us all a musical treat to brighten the day. Information was also provided re the possible formation of a Men’s Prostate Cancer Support Group. Anyone interested should contact Bob on 0427 606 240 or Rob on 5446 1318. The Auxiliary has now passed on a cheque for $650.00 to the cancer fund so thank-you to one and all.

Top job everyone

There was a morning tea for cancer held on May 25 at Landsborough Hall. Thank you to all donors (business and private), all workers, and especially to all who attended on the day. You helped to raise $1,800.00 which went to the cancer fund. Winner of raffle (patchwork quilt) was Mrs F McIntyre. Lucky door prize went to Ailsa Fraser. Thanks to hall committee and down under craft group for all their help. Shirley Ruhle Landsborough

Big Night Out Raffle Winner!

The winner of the Big Night Out Raffle was RoseMarie Raja. Ms Raja is able to spend $1,500.00 at up to five businesses who sponsored Big Night Out. Our raffle was drawn by Mr Robert Frizzo, a life member of the P&C. The Beerwah State School P&C would like to thank the community for purchasing tickets in our raffle and for the local businesses for sponsoring Big Night Out. Beerwah’s Big Night Out is now on August 5.

I just wanted to let the community know about something that my mum Barbara Cox has done for the students of Grantham State School. After the destruction of the floods, my mum wanted to help the kids at Grantham. Being an avid knitter, she decided that she’d make beanies for all the students at the school in her words ‘something to keep them warm’.

Queensland Health is urging people to get vaccinated for the flu season this winter. Queensland’s Chief Health Officer, Dr Jeannette Young, said the higher than usual level of influenza cases so far this year made vaccination vital for the coming months. “It’s especially important for people in groups considered most at risk, and that’s why Queensland Health provides free flu vaccinations for the elderly, pregnant women, indigenous people aged over 15 and those at risk due to medical conditions, Dr Young said. Anyone over the age of six months old, who is not severely allergic to vaccine ingredients, can be vaccinated. Vaccination is available from GPs’ surgeries, Aboriginal medical services and other immunisation providers. Queensland Health is providing more information about influenza, how to prevent its spread and vaccination for Queenslanders and their families at www.health.qld.gov.au/flu/

Sunrise Often as not, the effort of rising early to catch the sunrise will pay good dividends. Living relatively close to the sea we are fortunate to have ample opportunities to capture the glorious morning light, be it dark and stormy or lovely pastel colours. Locating an outlook with an interesting foreground provides for a great photo. ‘Sunrise’ was taken at Dicky Beach at 5.44am in October with a Canon 5D MkII 24mm -105mm lens set at 58.0 mm, aperture f/ 20, with a shutter speed of .5, using manual exposure mode. The shutter speed was slowed down to give a milky look to the water. In lighting situations like this, where the exposure can be difficult, taking up to three images of different exposures (bracketing) will allow you to capture

Photo by Annette the range of colours in the scene. These exposures can then be merged in an editing program bringing out the full range of hues in your image. Get up and happy capturing! Beerwah Grafx Group meets at Beerwah Library 4.00pm each Thursday.

Dealing with anger

Telephone Counselling Volunteers needed

Lifeline Men and Family Relationships Centre will be offering 10 week ‘Dealing with Anger’ group sessions commencing on June 20 from 6.00pm to 8.30pm. For men of any age who would like to start acting differently, become more aware of their emotions, understand where their anger is coming from and learn new ways to channel it productively. For more information or to book a spot in the class, phone Group Facilitator Ross Gilbert on 5452 9795. Welcome into the groups are men who have used violence or anger to resolve their issues and men who want to find alternatives to those responses when trying to solve life’s dilemmas.

Lifeline is seeking Sunshine Coast community members who are looking for an opportunity to give back to their community while gaining counselling skills. Those that are interested, are urged to consider Lifeline’s next volunteer Telephone Counsellor training course to fulfil their desire to help those most in need. Lifeline’s current volunteer Telephone Counsellors have been undertaking extra shifts to meet the additional demand to the 24-hour crisis line, 13 11 14, due to the many natural disasters worldwide this year. Although the disasters may not be in our backyard, the Lifeline Service assists people who are experiencing a crisis, across the country. The emotional impact on people has meant that Lifeline has experienced a substantial increase in calls from people right across the country and not just in disaster impacted communities. People continue to experience the emotional effects long after the events. Lifeline is calling on the community to consider becoming a volunteer Telephone Counsellor as they always need more volunteers and anyone can apply to be one of our Telephone Counsellors. Our next training course at Lifeline’s Client Services Centre, 37 Duporth Avenue, Maroochydore, will be conducted from 6.00pm to 9.00pm each Thursday commencing July 7 continuing until November 3. The cost of the course is $400.00 or $350.00 concession. Please phone 5409 2633 weekdays for a brochure.

Never too late for a return to the classroom Education student Tracie De Boe thought she had missed her opportunity to enrol at university after finishing school in Year 9, but was surprised to discover that she was eligible for entry to Queensland University of Technology at Caboolture and has never looked back. After working at Centrelink for 16 years, Tracie decided to investigate her options and found out about the free, one on one information sessions offered through QUT Caboolture. “I really just didn’t know what uni was like as none of my family or friends have been to uni so I didn’t have anyone to ask - the information session was an ideal way to find out,” said Tracie. “I had a number of concerns about whether I would get in and I was worried about being the only mature age student on campus,” she said. The information sessions are designed to provide information to students that have been out of the classroom for some time and Tracie recommends the session to anyone that is thinking about study, www.gcnews.com.au

regardless of whether you think you would get in or not. “The session gave me the confidence to apply and gave me the information I needed to make an informed decision. “If university is something you have been considering, do your research and get the facts. “I am now halfway through my second year of study and I’m thoroughly enjoying the experience at QUT,” she said. QUT Caboolture will be holding a special ‘Return to Study Evening’ for locals interested in returning to study after some time out of the classroom. The event is being held on Tuesday, June 21 and will equip people considering a return to the classroom with the information they need. Head of Campus at QUT Caboolture, Robert Craig said that QUT is working on a number of initiatives to educate and encourage non school leavers back to the classroom.

“There are a large number of people in our region that would like to study at university but feel they would not be able to get in.” “We are offering free information sessions, a return to study information evening and free STAT (Special Tertiary Admissions Test) tests to name a few,” he said. To book your place at the Return to Study Evening or to find out more about the options available and how you can secure your place at QUT, call 5316 7400 or email cabevents@qut.edu.au

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Ken Goodger Glasshouse Country Anglican Church When this week’s column was approaching, I was not sure what to write about and so I asked my family. My daughter Zoë was quick to pipe up, “write about me!”, so I will. Zoë has just turned 10 years old. This has caused me to realise how quickly our children grow up and how we and they need to make the most of their childhood. I often see parents with babies and want to go up to them and say, “make the most of it, they grow up too quick.” The name Zoë means life, and our daughter is sure full of herself (her name that is). Part of me wants to let her go out into the world and discover everything about it, but having worked in the court system and spent time living

overseas, there are parts of life that I don’t want her to know about, not yet anyway. That is the dilemma for parents. How much do we allow our children to experience? With high-speed worldwide communication at our fingertips, my children see more of the world than I did growing up 30 years ago. And they certainly see more of the world than their grandparents did 70 years ago. But then, my parents grew up during the Second World War. My parents can remember being frightened by air-raid practices and being told that the Japanese were coming and during and after the war living on rations. Both my grandfathers fought in World War I in the battlefields of France and both were badly injured, but thankfully lived to not want to tell the tale. Each age has its own problems, its own difficulties to overcome. Perhaps the best we can do is to allow our children to fully enjoy their childhood, but also prepare them as best we can for the world they will face as adults.

WALKABOUT

Have a steamy ride at Woodford

Did you know that at Woodford you can hop aboard a steam train for a trip back in time? The Australian Narrow Gauge Railway Museum Society operates trains on the Durundur Railway in Woodford on the first and third Sunday of each month. The next one will be this Sunday, June 19. The railway line is a narrow gauge line and most of the locomotives were used in the past on the Queensland sugar mill tramways. Since the formation of the Society in 1971, the enthusiastic members have acquired an irreplaceable collection of two-foot gauge steam, diesel and petrol locomotives and rolling stock, including a variety of line cars. Passenger operations are normally steam-hauled and are operated between 10.00am and 4.00pm on the first and third Sundays of the month. Trains operate roughly every half hour with a lunch break for staff between 12.30pm and 1.30pm. The railway station is located in Margaret Street, Woodford and there are picnicking facilities in the ground so you can stop and enjoy your lunch here as well. Fares are: adults $5.00, seniors $4.00, children aged five to 15 years $2.50 and family $15.00. For more information ring 3848 3769 in the evening between 7.00pm and 9.00pm or go to www.angrms.org.au

Harware and gardening needs covered While in Woodford, how about popping into Woodford Hardware and Nursery at 98 Archer Street and browsing amongst their large range of vegetable, herb and flower seedlings? Owners Dick and Kellie Howard said they and their staff are happy to offer customers advice on everything they need to know to help those seedlings grow and bloom and fruit in the garden. The business is a Thrifty Link Hardware store and the Howards and their staff were excited to receive the Queensland Store of the Year 2010 Award for being the best Thrifty Link in Queensland. Dick and Kellie are ex-Glasshouse residents and are especially pleased to meet anyone from this area. Dick grew up in Glasshouse and he and Kellie moved to Woodford in 2001. Woodford Hardware and Nursery is open seven days a week and there are specials available all year round. They deliver anywhere. There are two tradesmen, a plumber and a carpenter, onsite. “Customers like being able to get advice on their DIY projects from a pro,” Dick said. “Our tradies are happy to give information and tips to help your DIY project come together perfectly.” For more information ring the store on 5496 1385.

Mooloolah River Waterwatch & Landcare Inc. We Care About Our Environment Mooloolah River Waterwatch and Landcare have been extremely busy the past month attending many environmental events. Riversweep on the Mooloolah River was a fun event with the added bonus of cleaning up a section of the river. The Glasshouse Sustainability Expo was an opportunity to show the role of our organisation and inform the community how to better protect our precious environment. We also had a display and stall at the Sunshine Coast World Environment Day at the University of the Sunshine Coast on June 5. It was good to see so many groups and businesses come together to rally for the environment. We had a successful day and we hope that we and the other environment groups have impacted on the community.

Volunteers Needed!

Plant of the Month Harpullia hillii - Blunt-leaved Tulip The Blunt-leaved Tulip is a flowering tree with orange / red fruit and beautiful blue-black new growth which rarely grows over 10m. Found in rainforests from Kempsey, NSW to Ayr, and south-east of Townsville, this variety is ideal for shady areas, with its broad, firm leaves and spreading canopy. The Blunt-leafed Tulip would be a great addition to most gardens and is very adaptable to poor drainage as well as frost, making it perfect for all the districts in our area. While the fruits attract birds, they also provide food for the Bright Cornelian and common Pencilled-blue butterflies. This month we will be selling this beautiful specimen for only $1.50 per tube! So while you plan out your flora for your garden, why not visit the nursery and check out the beautiful Blunt-leaved Tulip while stocks last.

Do you have a passion for the environment and want to help? We need Water Quality Monitors for Coochin, Coonowrin, Tibrogargan and Mellum creeks, and we are always in need of help in the nursery. So if you want experience, or have time on your hands and want to help, come see us at the nursery and we’ll keep you busy! Remember to look after our environment in any way you can. It is up to us all to make sure we reduce our impact on the planet. Lets all be tree-huggers and help protect the things which we rely on the most - the trees and the water. Everything we do is reflected in the water …

Masked Avenger in Glasshouse Country The ‘Masked Avenger’ is out and about, striking fear into the hearts of pets and people when it swoops. Named for its bright yellow facial mask, the native Masked Lapwing – also known as a Plover – is only protecting its vulnerable nest. There’s a lot to love about these fascinating birds. “As Lapwings nest out in the open on the ground, they are quite exposed and vulnerable. This explains why they are such fierce protectors of their nests and why they scream and swoop at anything that comes too close,” said Ms Leonie Gale, CEO of the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife. “Enjoy Lapwings in your area, don’t fear them. These birds are all bluff. Though they can be noisy when protecting the nest and have small spurs on their wings, they rarely make contact if they swoop,” said Ms Gale.

Pisces the Brahminy Kite Age: Juvenile

Sex: Unknown

Found: On the side of a road in Kilcoy after being hit by a car. Transported to: The Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital by Toby and James from the Australia Zoo Rescue Unit. Veterinary Assessment: Dr Robyn examined Pisces and found small grazes to its head, as well as missing feathers on the right wing. Pisces’ left leg was also not perching well, but x-rays cleared it of any fractures.

Treatment: The impact of the car strike has left Pisces feeling sore, so Dr Robyn has prescribed antibiotics and antiinflammatories to help Pisces recover.

JUNE 15 2011

Thursday, June 23 9.00am to 11.00am at the College Kitchen Garden

Future: Pisces will be monitored at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, and released back into the wild once returned to full health. AZWH ‘Did you know?’: Brahminy Kites have weak feet, so although they have long, sharp curved claws they cannot take large prey. However they are experts at snatching prey in flight.

Visit our website www.wildlifewarriors.org.au to donate to injured wildlife like Pisces. Call the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital on 1300 369 652 for all wildlife emergencies.

SELF EMPLOYED BORROWERS BEWARE Self-employed business owners taking advantage of every claim at tax time could be severely limiting their borrowing capacity. Smartline Personal Mortgage Adviser Teresa Harrison said independent business owners, contractors, freelancers and consultants in the market to buy a home or investment property needed to be mindful of the tax deductions they were making or intended to make. “We see many self-employed people whose accountants have been doing a fantastic job in legally minimising their client’s www.gcnews.com.au

Blood, Sweat and Cheers Parents and grandparents, younger siblings and teachers were all treated to some fine performances at the St Paul’s Lutheran Senior Primary School Athletics Carnival last week. The three teams of Gregor, Jeffreys and Archer battled it out in both Track and Field events, with the Jeffreys House Captains determined to make 2011 the year that they won ‘three out of three’. Winning both the Swimming Carnival and the Cross Country earlier in the year, after a number of years of being dominated by Archer, made them even more determined. “This year has been pretty exciting, to have such determined competitors,” said Cheryl Button, PE teacher and athletics day convener. “But in the end, Jeffreys missed out by just the slightest of margins. 2011 is the first year, however, that all three teams have finished up with over 1,000 points each, so that is a fantastic effort.” Only 76 points separated all three teams in the final counting, with Archer on 1,110, Jeffreys on 1,138 but Gregor regaining their title for the day, on 1,176 points. The Jeffreys House Captains are now looking at the up-and-coming talent in the Junior Primary. “Their carnival is on Friday, June 10” they said. “We can’t wait to see who’s going to win!”

Beerwah Bulldogs Report Contributed by Dean Roberts

The Beerwah Bulldogs went up to Noosa on Sunday which is normally a very hard task to come home with the 2 points. Our Under 18’s are still a little undermanned and battled hard against the Pirates to go down 3414 up against a much larger and physical yeam. Reserve Grade were first to score in their game and must have liked the idea of playing in front as they held Noosa at Bay to record their 1st win of the season 14 – 6. A Grade let the Pirates skip away to a lead of 22-0 and then put on a couple of quick tries to get back into the game but found the task of reeling in the home team a little beyond them and will now have to string a number of wins together in the 2nd round to stay in the hunt. A-Grade Noosa Pirates – 28 – (Bradman McCarthy 1, Scott Williams 1, Jake Scanlan 1, Nathan Boys 1, Corey Dietrich 1 – Tries)(Zane McCarthy 4 – Goals) def Beerwah Bulldogs – 8 – (Duncan Ellis 2 – Tries)(Nil – Goals). Reserve Grade Beerwah Bulldogs – 14 – (Adam Tedge 1, Gary Atkinson 1, Matt Hick 1 – Tries)(Mitchell Jackson 1 – Goals) def Noosa Pirates – 6 – (Nick Melmeth 1 – Tries)(Zane Patrick 1 – Goals).

The Seniors next game is against Maroochydore at Maroochydore on Saturday June 18 which should be another good quality game and look forward to seeing all the Bulldogs Supporters come along and offer their support. The monthly Jackpot Triples was played on Wednesday and ‘the highest winning margin’ was drawn for the day’s game. The winners were Paul Mackenzie, Brett Standring and Robbie Dean from runners-up Bob Coxon, Di Sutherland and Jan Lawson. The ‘lucky draw’ prize went to Jo and Nev Littler. The jackpot was not won, so will be in excess of $450.00 next month. Thursday’s ‘Open Pairs’ was won by B Delchau and R Dean with 2 + 22. The runners-up were B Fogarty and R Scullion who won the second game with a score of 22. There will be no social game this Saturday with the annual Hibiscus Resort Visit-In / State of Origin on Sunday, 19 June with a 1.00pm start. The event will be Queenslanders v/s The Rest. To qualify as a Queenslander, you must have played your first game of bowls in Queensland. We need more players to match the number of visitors, so please support the day by nominating early. Coming Events: Charity Day, in aid of Cancer Research, Sunday, 10 July at 1.00pm. Monthly Jackpot Triples, Wednesday, 13 July at 9.00am. 42

Sporting clubs call to arms

Cancer Council Queensland is urging Sunshine Coast sporting clubs to join Call To Arms and take a stand against the confronting odds - half of all Australian men will develop cancer by the age of 85. Call To Arms is a national Cancer Council event, asking members and players from all sporting codes hold a Call To Arms match or game, wear something yellow and raise funds for Cancer Council Queensland’s fight against cancer in men. Cancer Council Queensland Fundraising Coordinator, Jodi Durkin said she hopes local sporting clubs across the Sunshine Coast will be inspired to get involved. “We want players from teams of all codes and levels to pick a game during their season to hold a Call To Arms match, wear yellow and raise funds to fight cancer in men,“ Ms Durkin said “Even if you’re not part of club there are still ways to join the fight, including sponsoring a

team or making a donation. You can even win a corporate box for the code of your choice simply by voting for your favourite sport. “In 2011, Cancer Council hopes to inspire Sunshine Coast sporting clubs to help reach our national target of $700,000 raised for the fight against cancer in men,” she said. Funds raised will help prevent and detect cancers in men, find new treatments, as well as support men in need by funding Cancer Council’s important cancer research, prevention and support programs. To register your club or for more information on how to show your support, please call Cancer Council Queensland on 1300 65 65 85 or visit www.calltoarms.com.au.
