Local MP calls for Polair chopper to fight coast crime
By Mitch Gaynor
THE Sunshine Coast must be given police helicopter capabilities to combat rising crime levels, according to Caloundra MP Jason Hunt.
Writing exclusively in GC&M News this week, Mr Hunt and Nicklin MP Rob Skelton argue that the recent introduction of a police chopper in Townsville should be replicated on the Sunshine Coast in order to take “community safety to a whole new level”.
“We’ve been keeping a close eye on what police have been doing to combat crime in Townsville, and by all reports the new helicopter has made a massive difference to community safety in that city.
“It’s that sort of resource when coupled with more police which can have a huge impact.” Townsville received an EC135 twin engine “PolAir” helicopter in January this year to combat surging crime levels.
The chopper has infrared technology and moving map and vehicle tracking technology.
“We take our jobs as the voices of Sunshine Coast people very seriously which is why this week while in Brisbane for Parliament we will be meeting with the Police Minister (Mark Ryan) to advocate for the access to police helicopter capability,” the two state Labor MPs write.

DOES anyone want the bid by Hanson to double rock extraction at its Glasshouse quarry to actually succeed?
Going by the number and weighting of public submissions received by council into the controversial project, the unequivocal answer is: nup.
Extractive industries always come with a bit of baggage, but to play devil’s advocate, do they bring wider benefits to the community? Just a question, not a position.
One thing those still looking to submit might want to consider is what the community might be able to themselves extract from this development proposal if it proceeds.
Is the proposed 11 cents per tonne a reasonable return for road maintenance when it currently pays 47 cents a tonne as part of its current agreement?
Further, what does the community currently receive from this and could there be an argument for less opaque use of funds?
FOLLOW
ANGELA USHER angela@gcnews.com.au
New Division 1 Councillor, Jenny Broderick, was on a listening tour of the community to gauge thoughts about the quarry late last week.
I suspect that will show less than 100 per cent rejection of the quarry, but there are still questions to answer regardless of where you sit.
Hanson’s response to some environmental questions were short on details.
And is there anyone out there who can say if $5m for road improvements is enough to cater for over 40,000 heavy trucks annually?
One point that was not addressed by Hanson was its response to cultural concerns.
While it’s own submission said it didn’t have to but was still working closely with the Indigenous community, one of the most passionate submissions hasn’t minced words.
“Whilst I understand the need for construction materials under the concepts of progress, I write to point out in particularly, there
lacks respect, disregard, or rightful recognition towards the Jinibara Traditional Custodians whose land is being blown up, destroyed, and removed,” Zeitha Jalamala E. Murphy wrote.
Bit of work to do here.
Interestingly, Auntie Z’s submission details truck movements on a single day last year. There’s quite a few. (p7)

A LANDSBOROUGH man has won a “mind-altering” $50 million win in last week’s Oz Lotto draw.
The winner held the only division one winning entry nationally in Oz Lotto draw 1573, drawn last Tuesday April 9, taking home the entire $50 million jackpot.
The Queenslander is the third-biggest winner of any lottery game so far in 2024.
While officials from The Lott attempted to reach out to the new multi-millionaire on the Tuesday night, the winner didn’t discover his good fortune until the following morning when he saw multiple missed calls.
When officials finally made contact, the man was understandably shocked by his massive win but ecstatic.
“Oh my god! It’s not big, mate. It’s mind-blowing!” the winner said.
He said he had left the phone in another room while he slept, and had no idea The Lott officials had been trying to contact him until he woke up the next day. “This is mind-altering. It means I can resign from work – that’ll be it!” he said.
“When my bank manager asked me years ago what my retirement plans, I said, ‘to win the lottery’. He just laughed at me. Well, I have!” The man’s winning six game QuickPick entry was purchased on The Lott website.
Sweethearts marry twice
Beautiful lives reconnect with vow renewal

A HINTERLAND couple have stepped up to bring joy to a family deeply impacted by dementia.
Cliff and Janette Robbins have been married for 54 years, but dementia has caused Cliff to forget their union.
Despite this, he regularly asks for Janette’s hand in marriage, and when Maleny residents Peter and Michelle Maher heard from neighbour, Jared Ashcroft, about the couple’s circumstances, they wondered if a new wedding might be just the ticket for the couple.
So with the help of family, friends and staff Opal Care Birtinya, where
Cliff ’s wife, Janette explained that the couple were originally married in Cardiff Wales on April 4,
But she said with Cliff dementia diagnosis he would continually ask her to
“I dearly wanted to give him peace of mind, which I hoped by marrying him again 54 years later would help settle his confusion,” she explained.
As ministers at the Range Church in Montville, Peter and Michelle were more than happy to assist with the wedding and help bring comfort to Cliff and joy to the Robbins family.
Peter was able to off the ceremony which was also attended by Cliff and Janette’s children and grandchildren, along with residents and staff members of the care facility.
Michelle said both herself and Peter felt absolutely privileged to be part of Cliff and Janette’s wedding which she said was a beautifully poignant and heartwarming occasion.
In the vow’s that she read out on the day, Janette
made reference to her original promise by saying that nothing had changed from the day 54 years ago when she had pledged to “love, honour and care for Cliff ” no matter what.
She said the couple had remained staunchly side by side throughout their lives together. “He is the love of my life and I will continue to care for him as long as it
takes,” she said. Michelle said the ‘remarried couple’ were gifted chocolates from the Maleny Chocolate Factory, and while Cliff’s long term memory wasn’t doing so well, his short memory was doing better for the time being, so they were confident the occasion would be held dear to him for some time.

Rates hike limited
Council say a substantial rate rise will not be on the horizon
By Sonia Isaacs
COUNCIL say they are committed to keeping rate rises as small as possible following news that local land valuations had skyrocketed over 30 per cent. A Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson said land valuations were only one of the factors considered by Council when setting rates and charge.
The spokesperson said there were several considerations involved including an assessment of land use and response to
the funding requirements of the community to deliver the service, facilities and activities they require.
“Council undertakes extensive rate modelling to limit the increase in rates that would otherwise arise because of the valuation changes,” the spokesperson said.
Currently, property owners are allocated to one of 49 rate categories within the Sunshine Coast Council Differential Rating Scheme.

Bald Knob 3G and 4G upgrades
By Kirra Livingstone
BALD Knob will undergo a number of planned Telstra outages over the next month across both 3G and 4G mobile services.
The first two outages began on April 9 and were expected to finish on April 14.
The planned maintenance was meant to cause a four hour outage for both 3G and 4G services.
From April 12 to April 17, however, will be a much more substantial outage for 3G and 4G services.
They are expected to last five and a half days, also due to planned maintenance.

“Keeping people safe is in our DNA, between the two of us we have been about community safety our whole lives, whether serving in the military and corrective services or protecting people and property as a firefighter.
“And both of us have continued to do everything we can to keep our communities safe since being elected, fighting hard for extra police and resources.” Those include a new

emergency services precinct, including a police station in Aura.
The pair also took aim at Facebook and social media in general for enabling young offenders to post their crimes in feeds.
“This must stop,” they wrote. “These social media companies must ban these videos and take them down straight away if they are posted - removing the platform to publicise these harmful acts and deter copy cat crimes.”
Opinion P14
The final outages for 3G and 4G will be from April 15 to April 21, however the outage will only last six hours.
This comes after Telstra recently announced that its 3G networks will be turned off from June 30, 2024.

Dozens oppose quarry as public submissions build

DOZENS of responses have been lodged in opposition to Glasshouse Quarry’s bid to double rock extraction days aft submissions were opened to the public.

Newly elected Division 1 Councillor, Jenny Broderick, said she was seeking community input as the application worked its way through council.
Cr Broderick said with little over two weeks remaining of the public submission period it was imperative she understood
community concerns about the proposed expansion of operations.
She said she would be prioritising door knocking along Coonowrin Road to both raise awareness about the community process and find out more about what residents felt.
“An awareness campaign is important for our community to understand that submissions are open now and it is vitally important that our local community have their say in this matter,” Cr Broderick said. Submissions close on April 25.

Stop lights at Mawsons and Burys Road Road
works leave long wait for motorists
By Kirra Livingstone
MOTORISTS frustrated at queuing for extended periods at a set of temporary traffic lights won’t have to put up with delays for much longer.
Local resident, Mike Reese, said he had had enough of being forced to wait at lights installed for a nearby development at the Mawsons Road and Burys Road intersection.
“Is it me or is there other people on Mawson’s and Bury’s Roads that have had enough of the traffic lights?” he asked.
“Sitting waiting up to five minutes until they decide when they will turn red to green with no other vehicles on the other roads.”
GC&M News drove out to the site at midday on Tuesday, April 9, and timed the red light at about 2.5 minutes, with no through traffic. A council spokesperson said the lights were necessary to “facilitate the safe construction of road works in association with the industrial
subdivision development at 42 Roys Rd, Beerwah”.
“They manage traffic within the construction zone while the road is reduced to one lane.”
The spokesperson added that it is the contractor who sets the timing of the traffic lights, ensuring the safety of motorists and construction workers.
“The traffic lights’ timing is set by the contractor
carrying out the works on site, allowing motorists to stop, queue and traverse the single lane at a low speed and ensure the safety of motorists and staff working at the site,” the spokesperson said.
However, the long waits are coming to an end, with the council saying construction work is due for completion in the coming days.
Maleny Skatepark renewal project
WEATHER and site conditions permitting, construction is expected to start early 2025 on the Maleny Skate Park Renewal project.
Council is currently working through the revised detailed plans.
A Council spokesperson confirmed that Council engaged with the Maleny community in September 2023 seeking feedback to help shape the Maleny Skate Park Renewal project.
“The final design specifics will continue to be refined to ensure the best possible outcome is achieved
for our community,” the spokesperson said.
“The proposed layout will improve viewing opportunities and increase passive surveillance from parents and spectators.
The Council spokesperson said the project would fill a much-needed shortfall in providing teens with play areas, both directly as an opportunity to play and also providing them a safe area to watch what’s going on and to socialise.
“Participation from a wider demographic can often improve skills, through

first being able to observe others, assess required skill levels, social cues and interactions before deciding to join in and committing to the basic skills of skate boarding or scootering or more complicated tricks in public,” they said.
The final design will also complement the new half pipe which was completed early December 2023 and is already well received by the local community.
“We will continue to keep the community updated on the final design and construction timing.”

Park work is okay: council
Residents told nothing to fear with earthworks at Bald Knob
By Kirra Livingstone
THE Sunshine Coast Council is adamant that significant earthworks on a private property at Bald Knob is complying with local laws despite concerns from residents. Heavy machinery has been undertaking earthworks at 960 Bald Knob Road. The property had been the subject of a development application in 2021 for a wedding venue, however, that application was rejected
and a subsequent appeal was discontinued in the Planning and Environment Court.
Work is now being undertaken on the property for a park, which does not require a material change of use application. A spokesperson for the council said that current works were lawful and do not warrant an application. The council had investigated a number of times following enquiries from the public.
“Council has investigated
each enquiry and to date, no breach or non-compliance has been identified,” the spokesperson said.
“Council is unable to take any formal compliance or enforcement action where no breach is occurring.
“Council officers will continue to monitor the work being carried out.”
The land was bought in 2020 and a development application was lodged for a wedding venue.
It is understood that the intent was for a one-off event and not as an ongoing
venue.
“The landowner has advised Council that the work being carried out on their property is for the purpose of a park use,” the council spokesperson said.
“In accordance with the Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme 2014, a ‘park’ use is considered to be ‘Accepted Development’.
“This means that no development application or approval is required from Council.”
Residents such as Paul Prociv said he was
being shoved around on very steep country, with deep ravines that drain substantial water volumes
a dangerous intersection, was like something out of a nightmare,” he said. kirra@gcnews.com.au

Memorial to be built at Beerwah Golf Club for ANZAC Day 2025
By Sonia Isaacs
AN ANZAC memorial set to be established at Beerwah Golf Club has re-ignited interest in the club’s origins as a district memorial golf club.
Earlier this year, the club was successful in securing federal funding of $10,000 from the Department of Veterans Affairs, “Saluting their Service” grant initiative.
The grant will enable the club to erect a war memorial structure near the gardens of the Pro shop with the aim to engage local suppliers to complete the work.
Club board member, Allan Warry, said in applying for the grant, he was reminded of the historical significance of the club and its original name as the ‘Beerwah and District Memorial Club’.
Mr Warry said he was keen to find out more about the origins of the golf club, and how it came to be named as a memorial club. He said he suspected it had something to do with its connection with the what was then the BeerwahPeachester RSL that was previously located on Beerwah Parade.
“I’m keen to find out more about why the golf club was originally named that way. I’ve heard different stories; one of which was that the original RSL club was unable to serve alcohol as a sub-branch; and so the community banded
together to set up a golf club that they could buy alcohol from nearby. Back then you could walk straight from the RSL sub branch to the golf club grounds,” he said.
Mr Warry, who is also a Vietnam Veteran, said he is very pleased that the club would be getting a dedicated memorial. He also acknowledged the assistance of both the Beerwah and District Sub Branch RSL and Glasshouse Country Sub Branch RSL executive members who supported the application, along with Federal MP, Andrew Wallace.
“I’m really happy we have been able to secure this funding. We’ve been talking about doing something like this for a few years now, so it was great to be able to construct a local memorial,“ he explained.

She said although all official correspondence for the club featured the full name of Beerwah and District Memorial Club, most people in the community just knew the community club as
Beerwah Golf Club.
She said the memorial grant had prompted recent discussions about possibly amplifying the club’s original name in signage and logos- however, that was a decision that the board and club members would have further talks on.
She said Beerwah Golf Club was founded in 1968 following public meetings at what was then the BeerwahPeachester RSL, which was subsequently rented as a temporary club house with the first tee located behind the RSL.
“We can assume this
connection to the RSL contributed to the decision on the club being named Beerwah and District Memorial Golf Club,” Ms Odgers said.
The memorial will commemorate all servicemen and woman, and their military service, with particular focus on those that have paid the ultimate sacrifice via a memorial plaque.
Construction on the new ANZAC memorial will commence over the coming weeks and will be finalised for the 2025 ANZAC day celebrations.
Year 6 Humanity awards
THE Fred Hollows Foundation is calling for nominations for the 2024 Humanity Award and is searching for Year 6 students who demonstrate compassion, integrity and kindness towards others.
Since 2012, The Foundation’s Humanity Award has celebrated more than 2,000 students who have made a positive difference in their community, and this year, the search has now started in Queensland.
To mark what would have been Fred’s 95th birthday this year, nominations opened on April 9.
One Junior Ambassador from each state and territory will then be named at a ceremony during Term 4 of the school year.
The Foundation will recognise a Queensland Junior Ambassador, who will be able to extend their humanity by allocating $5,000, to help The Foundation end avoidable blindness.
Parents, teachers, principals, and community members around the country can nominate a child in Year 6 who is making a difference in their world or following in Fred’s footsteps at www. hollows.org/humanityaward

Boot boost will help sport families in need
Mooloolah Valley Op Shop’s free shoes
By Kirra Livingstone
THE Mooloolah Valley Op Shop is doing their part for families during the cost of living crisis, by giving away free sports cleats to children playing football, aussie rules, or rugby league this year.
Since starting the drive on March 27, the Op Shop has seen an influx of shoes, as well as sporting equipment fly in and out of the door, and currently have 30 pairs of sports shoes available.
Mooloolah Valley Community Association secretary, Vicki Morrison, said it will help many families allow their children to kick their sporting goals, without worrying about uniform costs.
“We have cleaned up some of the donated boots, putting new laces in there if need be, putting them on the rack and families who need them can come
and grab them for free,” she said. “I think the parents have been grateful for this, especially with how things are at the moment, and if
they have a few kids, it can be difficult to get them out there playing these games.” Vicki said the op shop will accept donations for as long as there is a demand for this boot boost, and has seen a variety of items being donated already.
“If kids have grown out of their cleat boots that they’ve got, they can just bring those in and take another pair or whatever, but it obviously just depends on if we have the right size,” she said.
“But we’ve also got shin pads being donated and basketball boots without the cleats and all that sort of stuff, so there’s a range here.”
If you are a parent in need of some free sport shoes for your child, visit the Mooloolah Valley Op Shop now to see their range of free shoes and equipment!

Tickets are $60 for two people to build a craft ‘explosion box’ together, but if people want to build one each, they can purchase an additional kit for $20 cash on the day.

SAID IT.... You
Madness to stop
IN response to “Milking inflation” published 9th April. I agree with all that was said, however I would like to bring another aspect to attention. After having a discussion with the owner of a business that I have been involved with for many years, I can understand why these increases have to happen. His comment to me made sense, he said “I have a business loan and every time the interest rates increase I have no choice but to put my prices up to cover increased costs”. This would also apply to other businesses supplying goods to him and is also the case at the supermarket checkout as well. While it is tough to see the price of necessities going up all the time, I have yet to see anyone comment on the 30% increase in land valuation in our area. I have written to the new council representative to ask if this will be reflected as a 30% increase in our rates. I have yet to receive a reply. Surely this madness has to stop.

Member for Caloundra, Jason Hunt and Member for Nicklin, Rob Skelton COMMUNITY safety has been the core of everything we’ve done since being elected to represent you in the seats of Caloundra and Nicklin.
Keeping people safe is in our DNA, between the two of us we have been about community safety our whole lives, whether serving in the military and corrective services or protecting people and property as a firefighter.
And both of us have continued to do everything we can to keep our communities safe since being elected, fighting hard for extra police and resources.
Those efforts have seen a new emergency services precinct underway in Aura in the seat of Caloundra including a new police station, while in Nicklin, Nambour has a new police station and another one is nearing completion in Cooroy – these improvements have been reinforced by many more police who are better equipped - and there are more officers on the way.
And we’re about to take that push for community safety to a whole new level.
We take our jobs as the voices of Sunshine Coast people very seriously
which is why this week while in Brisbane for Parliament we will be meeting with the Police Minister to advocate for the Sunshine Coast to have access to police helicopter capability.
We’ve been keeping a close eye on what Police have been doing to combat crime in Townsville, and by all reports the new helicopter has made a massive difference to community safety in that city.
It’s that sort of resource when coupled with more police which can have a huge impact.
Extra resources need to be backed with tough laws and we were please to see the recent comments from Chief Justice Helen Bowskill who said Queensland had the strong laws needed for Judges and Magistrates to deal with repeat offenders and keep them off our streets.
If young offenders pose an unacceptable risk to the community they should remain in custody – and with our tough laws the courts have the power to do just that.
We’d also like to see the social media giants play their part. We’re sick and tired of young offenders brazenly posting their crimes in newsfeeds, and encouraging other young people to do the same.
This must stop.
These social media companies must ban these videos and take them down straight away if they are posted - removing the platform to publicise these harmful acts and deter copy cat crimes.
We’d like to thank the Sunshine Coast community for its continued support of our efforts to keep this region safe – we’re proud to be your strong voice in Government.
Golf is fun, oh who am I kidding...
MY Facebook feed lit up last week with speculation that Buck’s Bakery at Landsborough was selling to CJ’s. The idea that the owners would want to retire after 26 years seemed to take a few people by surprise. Of course the question is, what would CJ’s want with Buck’s when it has its own store just up the road. I know what I’d do if I
was running CJ’s. Surely the big winner out of the sale is the owner of the next door French patisserie, which could now have half as much competition as it did when it opened up a few weeks ago.
GOLF IS FUN THOUGHT it would be a great idea for a friend and I to take our teenage sons for a round of golf during the
school holidays. What could go wrong? A lot. Firstly, you can’t share your golfing demons with others, so that was a pile-on even before unleashing two loose and lippy teenagers into the mix.
From my first tee off out of bounds to copping a direct hit from a stray ball despite standing 20 metres away at right angles to the direction the kid was aiming, it was
hard to find a highlight.
Trying to explain the longaccepted use of the word ‘fore’ was met with blank looks. My personal low was barking to ‘stop asking stupid questions’ when my teen asked what he was doing wrong with the putter.
He mentioned later on the round didn’t seem a very healthy outing for any of us.
Golf is fun!

Australian documentary The Trust Fall: Julian Assange is set to have it’s limited cinema release continue later this year.
The film reveals the meaning and significance of the continued detainment and persecution of the most divisive political prisoner of modern times - Julian Assange. The film is the directorial debut of Australian filmmaker Kym Staton - founder and director of Films For Change. It has been shown by all the major cinema chains with a continued national run expected in May, and the well-received documentary delves into the controversial disclosures of WikiLeaks, and its co-founder Assange from 2010.
According to director Kym Staton, The Trust Fall: Julian Assange examines the meaning and significance of the insights that WikiLeaks shared with the world, the resulting behaviour of the governments involved, and the extraordinary personal risk taken by Assange.
“This is a film about a man who risked everything to bring the truth to light,” said Kym.
Filmed over two years on three continents and in ten cities, The Trust Fall: Julian Assange features highprofile Assange supporters and global experts. The film is narrated by Susan Sarandon, Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters, rapper M.I.A and Rage Against The Machine’s guitarist Tom Morello.

This month, let’s all take a moment to show our support for these hardworking Mums and Dads who work tirelessly to provide the goods and services that keep our towns thriving. We encourage everyone to buy local whenever possible, as it is an investment in our community and an important way to support our neighbours. By shopping at local businesses, we can keep money circulating within our region and help these small businesses continue to grow and thrive. Moreover, we are excited to share that our community recently secured a grant to support ongoing work for the mental health of our small business owners. Small business owners face unique challenges and pressures, and we believe it is important to support their mental wellbeing as well as their business growth. business owner, don’t forget to look into the QLD Government’s latest Business Growth Fund Grants which are now accepting expressions of interest until 5pm on Friday the 5th June. Celebrate our salvation
THIS time two weeks ago, the purples of lent which draped churches around the world gave way to threads of white and gold. Those colours will continue to hang brightly from altars and walls (and from shoulders) throughout the 50 days following Easter right up until Pentecost. The whites denote celebration and that is what Christianity does in ‘Eastertide’ – at least in theory. But what about in practice? An alien visiting our planet would be forgiven for thinking we endured the strains of Lent only to seemingly disperse in silence back into the humdrum of life at the end.
What is your way of continuing the practice of celebrating the Resurrection? Our 50 days of Eastertide is our way of celebrating the event of our salvation. It is also a way of saying to all: death and tragedy do not have the final word in human life and
we are going to celebrate that and remember it constantly.
The temptation to return to the humdrum of life, perhaps even imposes on us an obligation, or a stubbornness to celebrate despite our state of affairs. I am reminded of the images of Palm Sunday liturgical celebrations held in Gaza’s Holy Family Church - the only Catholic Church in Gaza - despite the destruction and death around them. What does a discipline of keeping the festival look like for us? Well, we are limited by our imagination and we need not be lavish. I am reminded here of the tradition of making sweets at home, in my home state in India. Growing up, Advent was a time of preparing the doughs, batters, the fillings, etc. Near Christmas they would all get fried, or deepfried, or baked, or chilled, or frozen. These sweets were then eaten with afternoon tea or offered to guests

throughout Christmastide. What recipes for sweets and biscuits does your family hold dearly? Easter may be the time (and the excuse) to pull them out.
Our celebrations need not be culinary. Do you wear a certain accessory or set of clothes on a good occasion? Eastertide may be the time to wear it more generously. Whatever we choose, they will be tactile reminders to us about the ongoing importance of the day which we prepared so patiently

Landsborough Free Pantry has been forced to close, as the current owner is moving from the area with no one taking it over.
Landsborough Free Pantry owner Shirley King started the service in 2021, filling a gap in the community to provide anonymous support to people who need to access free food, personal items and books. Shortly after the pantry began, Beerwah artist Katrina Odgers volunteered to paint the previously white fridge to make it more eyecatching and easier to identify.

In a Facebook post announcing the closure, Shirley thanked the community for their support.
“It is a shame as there is someone using the pantry everyday now in these harsh financial times,” she said.
The pantry closed on April 13, 2024.

Western Australia recently became the first state to ban single-use non-compostable coffee cups. Queensland plans to phase them out over the next five years.

Proud to be Australian
After having dug to a depth of 10 feet last year, British scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 200 years and came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 150 years ago.
Not to be outdone by the Brit’s, in the weeks that followed, an American archaeologist dug to a depth of 20 feet, and shortly after, a story was published in the New York Times: “American archaeologists, finding traces of 250-year-

old copper wire, have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network 50 years earlier than the British.”
One week later, the state’s Dept of Minerals and Energy in Western Australia, reported the following: “After digging as deep as 30 feet in Western Australia’s Pilbara region, Jack Lucknow, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely nothing. Jack has therefore concluded that 250 years ago, Australia had already gone wireless.”
“Oh, killing any?” she asked.
“Yep, three males, two females,” he replied.
Intrigued, she asked “how can you tell them apart?”
He responded, “three were on a beer can and two were on the phone.”

SOCIAL ricochet was played on Tuesday with Priscilla Vickers and Sally Adams scoring a win, 9 – 6, against Dianne Horsman.
Coolum club members in the form of George Oliver and Karen Andronis visited on Thursday to contest the ricochet pennants. Sarah Widin and Dianne faced off against them. Sarah won her game against George 26 – 8 while Karen turned the tables defeating an out-of-practice Dianne 26 – 10. At one game all Sarah and Diane were unlucky to lose a close game 15 – 19, Coolum winning the match 2 games to 1. Well done all players.
Association croquet was played on lawn 2 while the ricochet doubles slugged it out on lawn 1. Nick Cram defeated Lynette Evans 17 – 7. A team consisting of Dave Kerr and Ken Barker had an honourable draw with Wallace Roy 13 all.
Several players were away at the alternate stroke doubles tournament in Caloundra either as players, referees or administrators. An innocent, interested bystander moved from asking about the game to coming inside, watching, and having the game explained by Dianne, Wallace, Nick, Ken and Dave. He stayed on afterwards to hit some balls around under Wallace and Jazzie’s guidance. In the actual games Ken beat Nick 18 – 10. Dianne and David teamed up to beat Wallace 12 – 5.
The attached photo shows Wallace, with Jazzie’s help, instructing an innocent bystander dragged off the street.

Franklin is a stunning example of the American Staffy breed that came to us from the pound through no fault of his own. When you go slow on the introduction he is very affectionate and happy to follow you around for pats and cuddles. We have been building his confidence and he is coming along leaps and bounds. With someone willing to be patient with his training, he is going to make an incredible family pet that highlights all the best parts of his breed. Witta Tennis

ON Sunday April 7th our inimitable Witta Wikings team played Mooloolah Valley in Vet’s tennis in a home match at Witta. We enjoyed our tennis for most of the afternoon until we were washed out with heavy rain. As per usual, our social currency centred on the best sports bras on the market and whether it’s extravagant to own more than one; our physical ailments including optimal bandages, creams and ointments, and hinterland practitioners; our magnificent lunch including whether Maree’s homemade sausage rolls were best enjoyed with or without condiments; and spot the difference between a member of our team and one of the opposition. Young Kev graced us with his presence and

LAST Tuesday our Jackpot Pairs game attracted 22 bowlers that included a group of four visitors from Woodford and one from Glasshouse Bowls Club which was fantastic. The $158 lucky jackpot draw of (-20) was not won, we did have a team on (-17) which was close. This Tuesday 16th April the jackpot will be in excess of $190 so why not come and try your luck while enjoying our wonderful game. 8:30am for 9am start.
mentioned little about his ongoing struggle with haemorrhoids; we were pleased to see him coming out comfortably with his pink man-bag.
The tennis was played with exhibitions of wonderful sportsmanship, aces and double faults. All sets were nail-bitingly close and the crowd remained on the edges of their seats. Interestingly, a result was reached despite the lack of opportunity to play the last couple of sets, with Mooloolah Valley winning with a score of 7 sets and 52 games to Witta’s one set and 25 games. We thought the palindromic nature of the two games totals to be fascinating.
Challenging conditions for the first playable Sunshine Coast seniors’ competition match proved the difference in a closely contested match between the two top teams from the 2023 season, Nambour
We will be conducting our Junior Academy every fortnight so mark it in your calendar with the next event on Friday 26th April from 6pm to 8pm.
Also on Friday we had 6 rinks of bowlers playing singles Scroungers that included visitors Peter & Jo. This handicap competition is hotly contested that includes rink prizes as well as chocolates for maximum scores. This is an excellent game of consistency suitable for new bowlers as well as the more seasoned campaigner. 2pm for 2:30pm start.
and Witta Wompoos. Four tie break sets were contested in hot and humid conditions with both teams struggling at times.
Nambour were victorious 9 sets 67 games to 3 sets 47 games making the close tie break sets a factor in the result. Well done to Nambour on their home court, I am sure they will be wary when visiting Witta at home. Great tennis and great fun.
Many thanks to our team of Sean Lepper, Eamon Thompson, Tony Keenan, Andrew Blowes, Colleen Bichel and Annie Quarmby.
Katya’s Tennis Drills Thrills and Fitness is on Friday Nights at 5:45pm. Cost is $20. Come along and join in the fun. All levels are welcome.
Social tennis: Monday ladies 8am and Saturday mixed 1pm. All are welcome. Court bookings please call 0437 295 501 or go to the website: www.wittatennis.com.au.
Friday night 12th April we celebrated the launch of our 2024 Junior Academy played under lights from 6pm to 8pm. It was terrific to welcome back junior members and those experiencing lawn bowls for the very first time. The half time barbeque proved popular and thanks to John for cooking.
Our Club Championship Men’s Pairs winners were Ian Cope and Rob Coffey who will represent Maleny Bowls Club at the Sunshine Coast District Champion of Champions event being held in Nambour on Saturday 20th April.

The men extended an invitation to the ladies to give the game a try in 1952.
Some ladies liked it very much and formed their own club in April of that year.
In 1959 the 1st game on a full 8 rink green was played.
In 2001 the club opened under the new name Glasshouse Country Bowls Club.
What are your goals/ aspirations for the year ahead?
We are aspired to be successful in both the men and ladies up and coming pennant season.
Ladies having won flags in the past 2 years. We have coaching session for senior members and juniors on Monday and Wednesday arvo’s from 3.30pm.
We had 9 junior’s playing in the Qld State Championships in January with one junior making through to the Under 18 Qld squad for 2024. Our third Junior of our club to do so.
We hope this continues next year with increased numbers. Exciting to see the development of the juniors.
Are there any upcoming events the club is excited about?
The yearly Men and Ladies A Grade single championships.
In June we have our 2 day Open Junior Pairs carnival with many of the elite under 18 juniors in the state
participating.
Ladies Fiesta in September.
Annual 2 day Open Fours Spring Carnival with players local in interclub taking part.
Tell us about your community involvement?
The Glasshouse Christian College send students 5 weeks at a time, 3 times a year.
Glasshouse Primary School has sent students here previous years.
We also have the Qld Police Bowlers once a year and a visit from Toowoomba City Bowls Club bi annually.
We also run a Diggers vs Civvies Day around the
11th of November which members and visitors are both welcome.
Are you looking for new members? Why should people join the club and how can they do this?
We are always looking for new members. Bowls can be played by all ages and abilities and is not only good physically but is great for your mental health as well, meeting and mingling with different people on the green.
Barefoot Bowls is a pathway to more serious bowls with many of our current members joining from our Wednesday Night Business / Social Bowls
comp which has been running for 13 years, 2 times a year for 6 weeks.
We have several bowling coaches who assist both junior and senior bowlers for training or any new member wanting to take up the sport.
Bowls is an enjoyable and social game.
How many members do you currently have and what age groups can join?
Players of any age can play bowls.
With one eye on the future we are trying to attract more junior bowlers to our club.
We currently have 59 male bowls, 25 female bowlers with 8 junior boys and 1 girl.
Beerwah Masters swim team win large club award
THE Beerwah Masters Swim team won their first ever team trophy at the Noosa Masters Meet on April 6, for most average points won for a large club.
Eight competitors for the Beerwah squad participated in the annual swim meet bumping them up to the large club category, and a huge effort was put in by all swimmers.
The team won a number of medals and made several personal best times, and despite the tough competition they faced, the Beerwah side were humbled by the win.
Team swimmer, Kylie Cornock, said it is the first group club award they have won since starting the masters team in 2021, and the whole team was proud of the achievement.
“We did really well we had
everybody who swam really well and we won a club award which we have never won before,” she said.
“It was amazing, I don’t know if I ran or danced, I did something on the way up to accept the award, I was really excited, it was awesome.”
To contribute to the highest average points for a large club on the day, Beerwah Masters collected five gold medals and two bronze medals, with all but one swimmer getting a medal each.
“We haven’t seen results like that before so it was really cool,” Kylie said.
Kylie also praised the calibre of the Noosa Masters Swim Meet, who ran their 23rd regional masters event.
“Amazing, they run the best day, they are really organised and switched on
with their marshalling they do a BBQ at the end, it’s like a well-oiled machine and we love that day, we love going to Noosa,” she said.
“They are a really wellestablished club and they are celebrating the masters team’s 25th anniversary this year, which is huge.”
However, the Beerwah
team is already looking forward to bigger and better things, preparing for the Masters State Championships this week held in Brisbane.
“Our next swim meet will be on April 18-April 21, we will have six swimmers, myself, Lene, Louise, Courtney, Ange and Nardia,
Beerwah Golf junior program
THE Beerwah Golf Club has announced a new junior golfing program for beginners and intermediate players. The aim of the program is to provide a clear pathway for golf junior athletes. Both programs start this week, with the beginners program on every Monday at 4pm, and intermediate program is every Thursday at 4pm. The beginners program is suited for juniors aged 8-14 and the intermediate program is suited for juniors with some golf experience, aged 10-17. Each program has 10 sessions, costing families $100 and $110 for the term respectively. Beerwah Golf Operations Manager, Matt Lang, said it was important to the club to provide a clear pathway for up and coming juniors. “It’s a key point of our strategic plan investing in junior programs, we want to try and get some good golfers out of this,” he said. “Golf is fun and is a low impact sport, making it accessible for juniors.”
For any questions, email admin@beerwahgolfclub. com.au .
Two huge wins at Tassie bouts
competing at that one,” Kylie said.
“I don’t know how many podium finishes we might expect but it’s going to be enormous.
“There will be hundreds of swimmers there over the four days so its going to be a huge event.”
Although you can apply to compete in the State Championships rather than being selected, Kylie said the Beerwah swimmers will face up against some strong competition.
“We have been training for this one since we started back with masters swimming this year,” she said.
“This is a big event for us, and hopefully coming off the back of this award from Noosa, we will put our best foot forward in the pool, and do our best.”
IT was a successful fight night in Launceston for the Hinterland Boxing Club, with both Bryce Schafer and Tyler Blizzard winning their bouts. Blizzard fought his first title fight on the night (April 13), defeating Sitthidet Phanaensa for the Australasian Super Featherweight belt. Schafer dominated his opponent Ryan Cotten, winning by TKO in the first minute of the first round. He debuted as a pro boxer on March 23 this year, and won the bout by unanimous decision. Blizzard has now won 6-0 and Schafer has won 2-0.

IN THE Garden with Spencer Shaw FOREST HEART Eco-Nursery
Backyard Wildlife Wildlife
the lawn is king. Vast swathes of lawn may look attractive and appeal to certain needs, deep within our psyche, but not only are they a massive drain on our resources - through the fuel and machinery required to create and maintain them, but they also have a heavy impact on our environment through use of chemicals, fertilisers, and the carbon and noise emissions. That said, areas of lawn can be very useful for recreation and amenity values, but do we really need quite as much as some acreage blocks generate. Instead of scattered clumps of trees amongst our vast artificial grass lands,
wouldn’t it be nice to see scattered grassy clearings amongst ecologically diverse and complex forestlands. The challenge for us all, is to turn some of our acreage blocks back into forest, saving time and resources on mowing, and in turn create and share habitat with our native wildlife.
So, to make this a reality my suggestion is that we learn to do a little less
mowing and instead bring back to life our native understorey vegetation. Native grasses and herbs provide crucial habitat for native fauna such as Red Neck Wallabies, Bandicoots Red Brow Finches, Pale Headed Rosellas, just to name a few. You see I’m not completely anti-grass, you could even say I’m fully in favour of pro-grass (sorry, just can’t go past a good pun). There are a whole
swathe of fantastic native grasses and herbs that we can encourage or plant. Surprisingly some grasses grow in or on the edges of our native rain forests such as Oplismenus aemulus (Creeping Beard Grass) or Ottochloa gracillima (Graceful Grass).
These grasses can even be mown to create shadeloving lawns; sometimes even I can use the word L-A-W-N in a positive sense!
