ecently when I was watching the television coverage of the Tasmanian Fires – I found myself thinking about how quickly those people’s lives had changed and I started thinking about all of my possessions and what it would be like to live without them. I also thought how horrible it would be to go through this type of event, and what could I do to assist the fundraising efforts of the Red Cross. Clearly I wasn’t the only one locally thinking about it, as during the week we got a call from Amanda Smyth from Wild Horse Turf. She told us about two lovely young girls who were doing a ‘bake sale’ at the Landsborough Pharmacy to raise funds for the Tasmanian Fire Appeal and

Hi Everyone
the Queensland Institute of Medical Research. So I popped into the pharmacy for a chat and to take a photo of this community spirited twosome, Ingrid and Libby. They had spent the previous day baking and then on the day selling their tasty treats, and while I am sure they enjoyed doing it all – it is also great to see young people spending their time in a way that would benefit others. So thumbs up to Ingrid and Libby and also a big thank-you to Amanda for letting us know. Doors are opening for the Beerwah-based Illustrator as he embarks on his first exhibition showcasing the new illustrative style of Digital Hyperrealistic Illustration. “The world of Illustration is shifting,” Dean said. “Now with the influence of technology, the days of pencil and paper are quickly being replaced by mouse and computer screen. “It’s great to be at the cusp of an emerging style. There are not many practitioners locally who have adopted this style and I am excited to bring it to the public through my exhibition.” The exhibition ‘Double-Take’ looks at the world of Digital Hyperrealistic Illustration and gives an insight into the techniques and processes that Dean uses to create the pieces.

Dedication achieves results Glass House Mountains local Keil Bickle was assessed and promoted by World Master Chong Chul Rhee to the rank of Junior Black Belt in Rhee Tae Kwon Do at the recent Action Day held at Maroochydore State High School. Master Rhee appointed instructor Robert Frizzo, said Keil, who is just nine-years-old, displayed a maturity beyond his years and demonstrated his knowledge of the art with his free sparring technique and a series of successful board breaks culminating in a spectacular flying side thrust kick. “Keil’s achievement was a fitting reward for his years of study, dedication and enthusiasm,’’ he said. “He is a great role model. Keil is always keen to help others achieve the same goal.” Master Rhee, is the founder of Tae Kwon Do in Australia, head of the Rhee Tae Kwon-Do Organisation, World Master Instructor and Chief Instructor for Australia and New Zealand. He is also the President of the Tae Kwon-Do Instructors' Federation of Australia and New Zealand. Since introducing the art of Tae Kwon-Do in Australia 40 years ago, Master Rhee has established a very strong foundation for the art of Rhee Tae Kwon-Do, with the assistance of a massive network of Black Belt assistant instructors. Rhee Tae Kwon-Do is booming in Australia and New Zealand today, with many thousands of students.

Travellers admire Glass on Scholarship to help student become paramedic Glasshouse At the second annual ‘Australian Traveller’ Readers Choice Awards held last month, Sydney was crowned Australia’s Favourite City. However, it was somewhere much closer to home that received the honour of being awarded Best Bed and Breakfast in Australia.
For the second year running our very own Glass on Glasshouse took out the prestigious award. This spectacular venue, with its three separate cottages, is located high on the Glasshouse-Woodford Road, up near the lookout. Business owner Bill Rogers said, “we are really pleased to be recognised, particularly for the second year in a row. “As the award is voted by the magazine’s readers, I assume that it is our many loyal visitors – who make return visits, often for longer stays and during the different seasons – who continue to vote for us.” Glass on Glasshouse currently offers three luxury cottages for guests and they hope in the future to expand this to six cottages, including a two-bedroom cottage with disability access. Queensland was the most successful state overall, taking out a staggering seven awards, with New South Wales hotly on its heels with five. The Readers Choice Awards are the only consumer awards for tourism in Australia. Over 1,000 ‘Australian Traveller’ magazine readers nominated their all-time favourite travel destinations and experiences throughout the country in a survey comprising 22 categories conducted by the magazine from August to November, 2012.

Paramedic Science at USC It was established in recognition of Dr Arnold ‘Puggy’ Hunter's significant contribution to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and his role as Chair of the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation. Mrs Luck, who has two young children, said she was thrilled when she was notified about the scholarship. “The scholarship will help pay for my university fees and textbooks, and also take the pressure off from having to work four days a week while studying full-time next year,” she said. Mrs Luck, who has worked in retail and as a receptionist, said she had wanted to become a paramedic since she graduated from Beerwah State High School in 1997. “I have enjoyed getting back into study through TPP,” she said. “USC has a great atmosphere with great tutors, lecturers and facilities.”

A mass of bass for Ewen Maddock The water level in Ewen Maddock Dam may be low, but the native fish stocks are definitely on the rise with the release of another 7,000 Australian Bass fingerlings last Saturday. Steve Evans, Secretary of the Ewen Maddock Fish Management group, said the restocking is an important part of maintaining a vibrant local native fishing resource. “The results of previous stocking programs have been absolutely fantastic with quite a number of good fish being caught by recreational anglers and released to live another day,” Steve said. The group only releases Australian Bass fingerlings once a year, and as the adult fish can’t breed in the dam, it is vital for the future of recreational fishing that they are able to continue with the program. The fingerlings are expected to take four to five years to grow to the legal size of 30cm. “We are very grateful to our supporters and volunteers for their financial and physical help. This year, without a $2,000 grant from the Sunshine Coast Council we may not have been able to fund this release, as the State Government has cut their funding to groups like ours. “We’re now looking to raise some funds to acquire more fingerlings of different species which may become available from hatcheries at other times of the year.” If you’d like to find out more about the group and how you can become involved, check out their website www.ewenmaddock.com.au or email president@ewenmaddock.com.au

Inaugural fishing challenge for Ewen Maddock Dam
Do you fancy yourself as a bit of a star with a rod and reel? If you do, the Ewen Maddock Fish Management group has the perfect opportunity for you to strut your stuff and maybe win some great prizes as well. The inaugural Ewen Maddock Fish Stockers Challenge is being held at Ewen Maddock dam on Saturday, February 23. Club member Steve Evans said that the fishing competition is a catch and release affair. “We have prize categories for bass, golden perch, silver perch and saratoga, all of which are commonly found in Ewen Maddock Dam. “There is also a fantastic random draw prize of a fishing kayak package valued at $950, plus other random prizes during the day. “Even though the competition is limited to 50 people on a ‘first in, first served’ basis, all members of the public are encouraged to .come along on the day and check out the displays and activities on shore. Plenty of equipment will also be on sale from various sponsors.” “All funds raised go directly back into restocking programs for Ewen Maddock and Baroon Pocket Dams, which means that they can keep functioning as productive recreational fisheries into the future.” To find out more, go to the Ewen Maddock Fish Management website, www.ewenmaddock.com. au, and click on the link under ‘Latest News’. Entries close Monday, February 18 – but get your name in quickly to avoid missing out.

150 years of marriage! The year 2012 was a big one for three couples at the Landsborough Seventh-day Adventist Church, as they each celebrated their 50th wedding anniversaries. Glen and Roslyn Woosley, Grahame and Pam Adams, and Alf and Norma Bishop were all married, in different parts of Australia, within the same month in 1962. On reflecting on her 50 years of marriage, Roslyn said “we have always looked back on our wonderful family – and our church life – with love and happiness.” When asked what their advice for people looking to tie the knot would be, Norma added “make sure you have things in common; that you can laugh and cry together. Always talk about your joys and worries; never end a day in anger. Respect each other’s views – remember you are equals.” Taking that on board, young couples in decades to come will also be able to experience what Grahame has: “spending 50 years with the love of my life!”

The committee has approximately 12 members and is accountable to the Maleny Show Society committee each month. In order to attain the skills to work as a committee, Maleny Next Gen is proud to announce their first event with funds raised going towards particular elements of the Maleny Show. ‘A Big Night Out’ is set to rock the crowd with local artist Paul McKenna entertaining at the Maleny Show Pavilion on Friday, March 8. The dress code for the ball is formal with tickets costing $20.00, which includes appetisers. This event is for people 18 years of age and over. Sunshine Coast Council starts work to improve drainage in Beerwah at the eastern end of Greber Road on Monday, January 14. Division One Councillor Rick Baberowski said the project is a much needed upgrade of the existing underground stormwater network. “Drainage work will increase the size and capacity of the drain so that water can flow more readily underground to the main outlet at Old Landsborough Road,” Cr Baberowski said. “The drainage upgrade will help to reduce the impact of stormwater on nearby property and the road. “Work is expected to take approximately five weeks to complete if weather conditions are favourable. “Thanks for your patience in advance of traffic management measures that mean only one lane of traffic will be open on Old Landsborough Road during construction," he said.
Baking to raise funds
Matthew Flinders College students Libby and Ingrid spent time in their Christmas holidays baking and having a bake sale at the Landsborough Pharmacy. The girls were keen to raise funds for the Tasmanian Fire Victims and Queensland Medical Research Institute. They hoped to raise over $200.00 with their efforts. Congratulations girls thanks for being a great example to the rest of the community, of the importance of helping those in need.

Glasshouse Mountains Sports Complex Master Plan adopted Sunshine Coast Council has adopted a Master Plan for the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Complex which is an integral sport, recreation and community facility servicing the Glasshouse precinct and Sunshine Coast community. Division One Councillor Rick Baberowski said the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Complex Master Plan’s intent is to provide a 15 year vision for the complex, identifying what it should look like and how it should function into the future. “The adoption of the master plan will guide and inform staged development. It also provides a framework for strategies to improve overall recreation opportunities for users of the complex," Cr Baberowski said. “We need to make sure the complex meets current and future needs of its growing catchment area.

“Any impact on residential development in close proximity to the complex and the preservation of remnant vegetation both required particularly careful consideration in the development of the master plan. “As future demand for additional playing fields develops, this master plan has also explored the planning and utilisation of the adjoining 12.5 hectare land parcel as part of the long-term vision for the sports complex.” The Glasshouse Mountains Sports Complex Master Plan has analysed the current usage, population projections and future needs. Extensive community consultation including meetings, workshops and surveys of current and potential future users assisted to develop the master plan and guided the development of a draft concept plan in early 2012. The Glasshouse Mountains Sports Complex is home to a range of sports including soccer, cricket, netball and touch football. The facility is managed by Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club, which undertakes all maintenance and operational costs on behalf of the sporting bodies. Mooloolah Mob – Heart Foundation Walking Group
Contributed by Helen Weil The walking group from Mooloolah began walking seven years ago and several of us have been with the group for all of that time. We have formed many firm friendships while improving our fitness and stamina and encourage others to come and join us. We walk every Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at 6.30am. We meet at Martin Rungert Park and decide where to walk on the day. There are many different walks usually between four and five kilometres and finishing by 7.30am. You don’t have to do the whole distance, just what you feel you can. It’s a great way to meet new friends, to start the day off actively and to improve your health. Do come and join us. Ring Helen, 5494 7496, for more details if necessary, or just turn up. This is a Heart Foundation group and recognition is given for participation and number of walks, etc.

Glasshouse Country Menshed
Contributed by Bob McLean November and December of 2012 saw an assembly line in Santa’s community recycling workshop with the men converting preloved timber into a range of mobile pull-along ducks. The men presented these to St Vinnie’s member Peter Farrell to be distributed as gifts for Christmas. 2013 is shaping up to be a big year for the Menshed with the first meeting planned for January 16 and a number of projects planned. The men with a primary focus on Menshealth will continue to support the Glasshouse Country Prostate Cancer Support Group. The group will gather at 5.30pm on the second Wednesday of the even numbered months of the year, commencing on February 13. The men will be conducting two Sausage Sizzles at Bunnings Morayfield to promote the message of men’s health. They will also be constructing a bench seat for the June Canavan Foundation to be installed at Australia Zoo. This will be constructed from timber milled at Peachester, then clamped and dried. The two 3.8 metre planks are now ready to be dressed and fashioned into a beautiful memorial. The Glasshouse Country Menshed is a great place for the men of Glasshouse Country to come together each Wednesday from 8.30am to 12.30pm. You will meet some great blokes, learn or share skills or just have a chat. The men would love to meet you so drop in to the Resource Recovery Centre in Roberts Road, Beerwah and check us out – or give Bob a call on 0427 606 240 to find out more. Even the person who has organised it gets to sit back, relax and be spoilt by the great team at the cafe. Sandra and James have put together a great package for $30.00 a head where guests receive two drinks so that could be both a cold and hot drink, as well as a selection of four hot savouries, four cold savouries, and four sweets. With all of the gorgeous items made on the premises, the food doesn’t just look good, it’s tasty and fresh. If you have an event coming up why not talk to Sandra and see what they could do for you?

Back up before it’s too late
Penguins and Polar Bears
We have discussed backups in a previous column, but it seems many are still either uninformed or just complacent when it comes to backing up! Basically a backup is a COPY of your very important data (whether it be photos, a MYOB file, letters, emails etc.). The COPY of your important data should not be on the same physical gadget: unless you know you have two hard-drive devices inside your computer tower/box, then backing up your copy to (Local Disc) C or D or G or any other location, is simply putting the data in a different partition of the same hard-drive! If the hard-drive fails, you lose the lot. Also, if your backup is on a second hard drive inside the same PC/Laptop and the machine gets stolen, then you have also lost everything. Ideally your backup should be onto external storage, like a USB Stick, USB Hard Drive, DVD or (increasingly popular) ‘The Cloud’ (which is storage on a server via the internet). Just remember, if you routinely back up your MYOB file onto a USB stick but leave it in your laptop bag, you risk losing the lot if the bag is stolen! With digital photography, if your photo backup is in the house and the house burns down, you could lose the lot. A computer is easy to replace, recapturing precious memories is a different matter! Best practice is to back up regularly and keep that backup in another location; if possible have a second backup kept with someone you trust. Final word, back up before you find yourself in a situation where you could be spending a fortune to recover data, or possibly losing important records altogether. Prevention is always better than cure. For tips, see www.mooloolahpc.com.au or for help, call Gus on 0405 125 662.
Welcome all to 2013 - something tells me this year is going to be a big one!! Times seem to be changing no matter what your occupation and maybe, just maybe, the economic state of things might be starting to turn around for many of our local businesses. In my occupational field - Digital Marketing there have been few larger changes than those imposed by web giant Google over the 2011 2012 period. In February 2011 Google hit website owners with the launch of 'Panda' - a total change to their website ranking system in which emphasis began to be placed just as heavily on “off page” factors as “on page” factors. In simple terms, Google no longer just cared about your name and keywords. They wanted to see what the quality of your website really was - what real benefit you would give to internet users if it sent them your way. Because of this, 'off page' factors such as the quality and standing of OTHER sites linking TO your site became critical factors.
Emily Madden and her family would like to sincerely thank Debbie and Sarah Willis from Beerwah’s Bank of Queensland for their amazing kindness and generosity in organising and baking for the recent ‘Bake Sale’ to raise funds for Emily’s urgent medical treatment. Thank you also to Debbie and Jordan Willis for selling the goodies and the Beerwah community for supporting the stall and raising an incredible $510.00! A huge thank you also to Prince’s IGA Beerwah for organising a raffle and collection jars to assist with our fundraising endeavours. Thank you so much to the following businesses for their kindness and generosity in donating the fabulous raffle prizes: Beerwah IGA, Beerwah Hotel, Flair Jewellers, Body and Soul, Travel Treasures, Smiley Jewellers, Beerwah Newsagency, Soul Pattinson Chemist, Kathy’s Massage and Healing, Beerwah Shoes, Cedar House, Chic Effects, Garden Terrace and Gone Bonkers. Thank you very much to everyone who purchased raffle tickets or donated to the collection jars – an amazing total of $1848.00 was raised! Thank you so much to everyone who has supported our cause to raise much needed funds for Emily’s medical treatment. Your kindness, generosity and support is overwhelming and very much appreciated! If you would like to learn more about Lyme disease and its co-infections or read about Emily’s story, please visit Emily’s website http://www. hopeforemilymadden.com or her facebook page http://www.facebook.com/HopeForEmilyMadden.
In 2012 Google followed up their Panda ranking algorithm with a similar but different algorithm they called 'Penguin'. While Panda was all about finding the good, Penguin was aimed more at weeding out the bad, with tougher penalties for websites violating Google’s Webmaster Guidelines, such as intentionally misleading, cramming pages with keywords and duplicating content in an attempt to saturate the web. Now, in 2013 we anxiously wait to see what new rules and regulations Google can come up with, and what animal they’ll throw at us next. I’m thinking 'Polar Bear' and perhaps with a heavier focus on social media such as Facebook and Twitter - but at this point we can’t know for sure... I’ll let you know when I do!

Aussie World has opened a new water play area called Leak’n Logs which
is the fourth new attraction in just under two years to complement the 30 existing rides and games. Leak’n Logs has been created and constructed on site and is jam-packed with unpredictable water surprises including a tin shed that inside emulates a typical Queensland electrical storm complete with thunder, wind, lightning and rain. Features also include a walkthrough mist shed sitting underneath a leaky corrugated iron water tank, random tipping buckets, intermittent and continuous showers, an outback log waterfall, and irregular dancing water jets. This hot summer Leak’n Logs will no doubt prove to be one of the most popular attractions at Aussie World. It’s a great way to cool off on a hot summer day! Aussie World’s other rides and attractions include the water ride Plunge where your pants are guaranteed to get wet, thrill ride Redback and fun Giant Slide. With so many thrilling rides and games, Aussie World is a fantastic day out for the entire family.

School News Mooloolah Community Grant makes summer splash!
Last week, three students from Mooloolah State School enjoyed Summer Splash 2013 at Mudjimba, thanks to a generous contribution by Ruth Zerner and her annual Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy Community Grants Program. There was also a contribution from a local Beerwah businessman who wishes to Ruth with the Summer Splash participants remain anonymous. Amelia Foster, Georgia Gillespie, and Hayley Sugden were selected for sponsorship to attend the Summer Splash, and were accompanied at the camp by Mooloolah State School Chaplain Mark Whysall. The Summer Splash camp was organised by Mark and his wife Linda through Scripture Union Queensland, which provides chaplaincy in schools, and was open to children from Year 5, 6 and 7 across the Sunshine Coast. The girls described their five day Summer Splash experience as “exciting and awesome!” Fun-filled activities provided opportunities to try new challenges, work in teams, establish new friends, and develop new skills in leadership. Activities included camp survival skills, archery, ice-skating, obstacle courses, sing-alongs, messy games (with jelly, flour, spaghetti and detergent!), roasting marshmallows on the campfire, and even a visit to Wet’n’Wild! The camp leaders did a fantastic job supervising and supporting the 60 children attending! The Mooloolah students are extremely thankful for the wonderful opportunity the sponsorship has given them to attend the camp. Mooloolah State School Chaplaincy Committee also wishes to express great appreciation to Ruth and the Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy for their ongoing generous support of the school’s chaplaincy program. Students sing out
The students were singing and dancing but the audience had difficulty hearing them as a result of technical problems with the school’s sound system. All that has been rectified and the sounds of Christmas carols and songs rang out loud at the recent concert at Peachester State School, thanks to the generosity of parent Ric Kircher and Comscan Electronics. Peachester has been touched by the generosity of the local and broader business community in offering to repair the sound system at no cost to the school. This has enabled the students to perform a variety of concerts, recitals and school entertainment that the whole community can hear and enjoy. The Christmas concert and Year 7 graduation were the finales of a busy year for the students in classroom music, choir and instrumental classes, with the school’s undercover area and Peachester Hall packed for the events.
The whole school performs ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’ for the school community at the recent Christmas concert

Civil engineer wanted
A civil engineer, probably retired, highly experienced and hopefully successful, is wanted to participate in a highly improbable undertaking. For some time now we have lamented the decline of the Beerwah area around Simpson Street, arguably since the closure of the rail crossing. We have seen business closures, empty shops and the isolating of the population and services on the east side of Beerwah. This has no doubt contributed to comments by people in the community that there is no focal point in the township of Beerwah. No heart, no centre. Unless you are prepared to call the Woolworths car park our heart! When you stand on the east platform of the Beerwah station two things stand out. Firstly, you get the best view in town of parts of the Glass House Mountains, a view we should be planning and building to exploit. It is our unique identity. Secondly, you notice when looking south and north along the railway that the station is built on a steep rise. From the platform it descends towards Beerburrum as well as towards Landsborough. It has occurred to us that if it were possible to sink the rail line so that the Beerwah platform became an underground platform, considerable land would be freed up for community and commercial purposes as well as Beerwah being re-joined as it were. If it were possible (and this is where our civil engineer comes in) it would have many positive aspects and, at the same time, would in no way hinder the recent planning and beautifying projects proposed by council. It has been pointed out to this writer by a person of considerable experience in these matters that if the cost of this project is less than the potential economic and social benefits, it might just be a goer and worthy of further consideration. I would welcome any contributions to this idea and once more urge people with experience in civil engineering/ construction to contact us on sinkbeerwahstation@gmail.com The Sink Beerwah Station Group
Great Christmas Carols
My family had the pleasure of attending the Christmas Carols on Saturday, December 15. To the event organisers, volunteers and everyone else involved, thank you for a wonderful well organised free family event. The singers and band were amazing. What a wonderful event, see you next year. Kerri Robertson Glass House Mountains
After reading a contribution last year by Friends of Bankfoot House, Glass House Mountains local Brian Stallworthy was inspired to share his family connection to Cobb and Co Coaches in New South Wales. My grandfather, Dick Stallworthy ran the Cobb & Co coach lines from Collarenebri to Angledool back in the late 1800's to the 1930's. He would continue to the town of Hebel Queensland (a few kilometres over the Queensland border) - if customers or goods required it. He was known for having the best horses in the North and North West of the state and for his stories. The local Chinese gardeners at Angledool would travel with him. On one occasion grandfather was informed the Troopers were waiting at the Narran River Bridge. He asked the boys what were they carrying that the troopers would be interested in? Turned out they had their opium, so he took it off them, placed it underneath his driver's seat and of course, the trooper's failed to find it. He left it on their gatepost on the return trip. Another story was of a local boy called Joe, Grandfather had picked this young bloke up, he was going to school in Sydney so grandfather would carry him to Collarenebri and he would then get out to the railway at Pokataroo. This particular day, there was a ferocious storm, grandfather who loved watching lightning said it was bouncing off the reins and the thunder was as loud as he had ever heard it. Young Joe was that frightened by it, he had to place him in the boot of the coach and that's the way he transported him.

Bridge replacement in Crohamhurst We all know how beautiful and agriculturally important the Crohamhurst area is and residents are about to get improved access and road safety. The low level crossing and timber bridge is being replaced on the Stanley River at the end of River Road. The low level crossing will be replaced by a series of concrete culverts 4.8 metres wide and 16.2 metres long with a deck level approximately 0.76 metres higher than the existing crossing. This will have much greater waterway capacity. The timber bridge will be replaced by a concrete structure five metres wide and 9.5 metres long with a deck level similar to the existing bridge. Preliminary work has commenced on construction of side tracks. Bridge replacement work starts in midJanuary and is expected to take 14 weeks to complete.
Are you prepared? Many of us live in or near bushland and with the prolonged dry weather conditions it’s important to make sure you are prepared for the possibility of fire. The Department of Community Safety (Queensland Fire and Rescue Service and the Rural Fire Service) has published ‘Prepare. Act. Survive.’ to help you prepare your home and family for bushfire and guide you through an emergency. Council’s website has the information and links you need to make sure you’re prepared whatever the weather may bring. Here’s to a happy and rewarding 2013 for all the communities in our remarkable Glasshouse Country.

Mooloolaba Beach steps by torchlight At the northern end of Mooloolaba Beach in front of The Esplanade, these steps have seen a lot and could tell a tale or two of wild weather on winter nights, raging seas, close calls with king tides, spectacular summer storms and mellow sparkling days. Countless sandy feet have trodden them: walkers, joggers, surfers and swimmers; wasted drunks and druggies; snogging couples, schoolies, caravan parkers and backpackers; tourists speaking languages from across the globe; families with plump toddlers heading for the nearby rock-pools. It’s a perfect spot from which to build memories. The photo was taken with a Nikon D700 with a 24 - 120 f4 lens. The settings: 16 sec, f13, iso 400, 62mm.
Grafx Group meets at the Beerwah Library each Thursday afternoon, from 4.00pm. New members are always welcome. To find out more contact Alistair Davis on 5496 9006 or email alistairvet@gmail.com
Get creative! Be inspired!
If your New Year Resolution is to get creative or try something outside your comfort zone, Frances has the answer for you! Frances Harper will be running an introductory jewellery making course through February and March on Friday mornings at the Tree Frog Gallery (between Landsborough and Maleny). Frances is our local jewellery-making tutor who loves sharing her unique and varied designs, and has been running classes for several years. However she has noticed that people are wary about giving her workshops a go as they think of themselves as un-artistic. “It is the biggest problem I have!” she says. “Once they come along they always have a good time and make beautiful jewellery, and nearly everybody returns for more.” She hopes that the course structure will give people more courage, knowing they are amongst other beginners. “Each week we will do something quite different, always making a piece of jewellery, and by the end of the course I can just about guarantee that people will be buzzing with their own ideas!” If you’d like to dip your toe in before trying a full course, Frances is also running a Treasure Pendant workshop on Friday, January 25. This design is a polymer clay pendant which is featured in the current edition of the Australian Beading magazine. You’ll be making a classy focal bead that will be enhanced by a polymer clay frame for a stand-out effect. Frances has just returned from tutoring at the Woodford Folk Festival where she taught two of her popular designs, and where the most common student comment was “great fun.” Frances is hoping you would like some ‘great fun’ too. Give her a call on 5494 9817 or find out more about her classes at www.jubeadilation.com.
Is Your Baby Suffering From Colic?
Is your little one constantly crying in pain? Is he/she having trouble feeding, or keeping it down? Is he/she arching his/her back in attempt to find relief? Do you wish you knew what was wrong? Or that there was something more you could do? Is the crying beginning to stress you out as a parent? Is it affecting your bonding with your child?
Babies are supposed to eat a lot, sleep a lot, and poop a lot...and cry a little. If your baby is crying more than he/she should, seems unsettled, isn’t sleeping, or is spitting up often...something isn’t right. Studies suggest infantile colic now occurs in 25-40 percent of babies. The medical literature says infantile colic is difficult to diagnose and that if it is colic, most children will ‘outgrow it’ by 12 weeks of age. The common treatment for infantile colic includes drugs like dimethicone, advice to change formula, or to ‘wait it out’ as the baby will eventually “outgrow it”. Most of these treatments, however, haven’t offered parents and babies the relief hoped for. There is a better option! Several weeks of sleepless nights and living with a baby in pain can seem like forever. Chiropractors have known that specific spinal adjustments can get to the cause of what is ailing your child. There are numerous case studies where infants with colic have been relieved of their painful symptoms with chiropractic care. In one study, 316 infants with moderate to severe colic were adjusted. 94 per cent of the children within 14 days of chiropractic care (usually three visits) showed a satisfactory response. After four weeks, the improvements were maintained. One fourth of these infants showed great improvement after the very first chiropractic adjustment. The remaining infants all showed improvement within 14 days. Note: 51 per cent of the infants had undergone prior unsuccessful treatment, usually drug therapy. Dr Braxton is a member of International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, has extensive training in evaluating and adjusting children, and is Webster Technique certified for adjusting pregnant mums. Call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today to find out if he can help your family finally find the solution. Beerwah – 5494 0499 or Maroochydore – 5443 4545. Happenings Out and About Vacation Care is cool The kids at Mooloolah Vacation Care certainly spent the first day of the recent heat wave keeping cool when they went on an excursion to Aussie World and checked out the latest attraction – their water play area called Leak’n Logs. It appears that there is very cool theme for their excursions, with the next trip taking them ice skating in Caloundra.

WEDNESDAYS *Mooloolah (Paget Road) 9.00am
Remember the lines King George V1 quoted in his Christmas message in 1939 while Britain was at war? “I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year ‘Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.’ And he replied ‘Go out into the darkness and put your hand in the hand of God. That shall be to you a light and safer than the known way.’ ” We have a New Year, a time to reflect on changes we may wish to make in our lives in 2013, changes that could affect us for eternity.
Whatever changes are happening in the world, we have an unchanging and changeless God. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. On January 6 we celebrated Epiphany, 12 days after Christmas, when we recognise the revelation of Jesus to all people not just to the Jews, in the persons of the Wise Men. They followed a star to find Jesus. He is the only star we need to guide us in 2013. May 2013 be a significant year for us all!

Extra home loan repayments provide cash flow benefits. We all know we should do it, but making extra repayments off our home loan is often one of those things that we plan to do ‘one day’. The realities of everyday life can often thwart our best intentions to pump extra money into the home loan and pay it off as quickly as possible. Smartline Personal Mortgage Advisers has reinforced the many benefits of not only paying extra off your home loan, but doing so as soon as possible after taking out your mortgage. “While there are certainly benefits to paying extra at any time during the home loan, working hard to put as much of a ‘dent’ in your home loan balance www.gcnews.com.au
as quickly as possible, say within the first two to three years, is one of the best things you can do,” said Smartline Adviser Teresa Harrison “Why? Because in the early stages of a loan, the majority of your repayments are being consumed by interest whereas extra repayments go straight off the principal.” “It can make a massive difference to your long-term household cash flow, giving you more choices and opportunities.” Take the example of a $400,000 30-year loan at 6% interest with fortnightly repayments. The total interest charge on the loan over the life of the loan will
be about $463,000. However, paying an extra $100 a fortnight from the very first payment will save a total of about $104,000 over the life of the loan. Waiting two years to start the extra repayments would save about $88,000 and waiting five years would save only about $67,000. Paying an extra $200 a fortnight from the outset would save a total of about $167,000. Waiting two years would save about $143,000 and waiting five years would save about $111,000. “So in this best case scenario, if you could pay an extra $200 a fortnight from the get-go, you would save about $167,000 or pay about 36% less in
interest,” Teresa said. “Remember, cash flow is king! There can be lots of reasons why it’s difficult to make extra repayments off your home loan, but if you can do so, the rewards are enormous.”

Sunshine Coast reinforces its sustainability credentials
Have you ever wondered what the future of our local food supply is locally? Will we have a secure food future with the increasing development of our productive lands for reasons other than farming? One award winning Sunshine Coast business – Global Boss International – has decided that something needs to be done to ensure our long term sustainability. With the announcement of the founding of the ‘Centre for Growing Sustainability’ – a new community-focused initiative based at the Big Pineapple – the Sunshine Coast region is set to become a leader in sustainability. Working in collaboration with the Big Pineapple and local green guru Cath Manuel of ‘Soil to Supper’, the centre focuses on food security driven by healthy soil as its core value. Based at the Old Nut Factory, the centre will involve the wider Sunshine Coast community by providing community growing space, education at all levels, research and development and many other organic growing related activities. Centre director Cath Manuel said that worldwide, food security is a major challenge. “The new centre will reinforce our region’s sustainability reputation and that will help to focus national and global attention on us. “The priorities of the centre will be directly related to how we grow our food and the way we manage and care for our soil. We aim to help everyone within the community learn new skills, be inspired to consider the food they eat and to teach people how to do this organically. We owe this to our future generations,” she explains. A meeting of key players including TAFE, Sunshine Coast Council, schools, the China/Australia Association and others was held at the Big Pineapple in December to provide guidance to the centre’s development. “It will happen and happen quickly,” Cath said. “Development of the centre is dependent on community support – from manual labour to help establish the offices, through to landscaping and other priority projects. Our aim is to have a formal launch at our major event in March 2013.” If you’d like to know more, or to contact them to offer your help, the centre’s website is www.centreforgrowingsustainability.org

Feel'n Seedy
Business feature
Feel'n Seedy is a family owned and operated plant nursery in Glass House Mountains specialising in tropicals / subtropicals, natives, flowering plants and much more. Andrew and Sian McKinnon have owned and run the business now for one year and are ready to help you beautify your gardens with their fantastic range of great landscaping plants. They have both worked hard to turn the nursery into one which is both beautiful to visit and is a great source of quality plants at very reasonable prices. The nursery is handily located on their five acre property at 158 Kings Road, Glass House Mountains, where all their plants are propagated and cared for. Andrew and Sian are finally living by the saying 'Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life'. They are both passionate about gardening and growing plants, and they love helping people with any gardening questions and
problems. The nursery has expanded since they took it over, and so now they grow a lot more than just tropicals. The sales display area is filled with natives, unusual tropicals, pretty flowering plants, frangipanis, bromeliads, palms, water plants, bamboos, grasses and more. As all are grown at the nursery, they are sun hardened and bred to thrive in our local climate – so you can be guaranteed that the plants you take away are of top quality and will have the best chance possible of thriving in your garden. The range and quality of plants they keep means that there is now no reason to travel outside the area to other non-local nurseries or big hardware chains for your garden plants. Everything you need is at Feel’n Seedy. And if they don’t have it in stock, just ask and they’ll do their very best to source it for you. Andrew and Sian invite you to call in, say hello
and browse their new expanded nursery at 158 Kings Road, Glass House Mountains. Just look for the Feel’n Seedy sign at the front gate.
