Hi Everyone

I

remember once watching a Christmas movie and in it the family sat around the table for Christmas lunch and they each took a turn at saying what they were grateful for – and I remember thinking ‘how American and cheesy’ this sounded. Sadly though, I must have finally reached middle age as this week I found myself chatting to someone about just that topic. And like lots of our readers, I am grateful for where I live and that I enjoy living in the semi rural location and being surrounded by nature and wildlife (even though I am still scared of birds). However, what I am really grateful for is that I live and work in a community with so many caring, enthusiastic, generous people, who take an interest in the lives of others, and who

are there to care, assist, support and look after each other when required – and to be happy for them when good things happen to them. I know how generous our community is. Throughout the year I write up so many stories for people doing fundraising, or volunteering. But while the raffles and street stalls and car boot sales, book sales and markets are important, what is more important is why people do it – and that is because we want to make someone else’s life just that little bit better. So while Christmas might be the season of giving – I am grateful that our community doesn’t wait until December to get started!

Toy workshop at Beerburrum Twin Cedars Lifestyle Villas at Beerburrum provides a workshop with tools for its residents. Throughout the year one of the residents, Don Hayman, made great use of it to create some lovely traditional timber toys. Don gets a lot of satisfaction from making the toys and he was keen to see that they got put to good use, so he recently donated them to the Maroochy North Shore Lions Club for them to sell and raise funds for the children’s hospital. Twin Cedars owners Rob and Tim Gardiner provided all of the timber for the project, and while Don hasn’t managed to encourage any of the other residents to join him in his hobby, some of them also assisted him by providing varnish to finish off the toys. Don has spent a couple of hours each day, working on the toys over the past few months and he has produced a total of 12 wooden trucks. The Maroochy North Shore Lions have decided that they would share the toys between Maroochydore State School’s Early Childhood Development Program, Lions Emergency Accommodation Centre, and two would be used as items for sale at their annual Cent Auction at Easter 2014.

The Early Childhood Development Program supports children from birth to five years who have significant educational support needs arising from a diagnosed or suspected disability. They focus on providing early intervention to assist children to prepare for their first year of schooling. There are, on average, 30 children attending at any one time. They are administered by the school but are housed in a separate building within the school grounds. Lions secretary Bob Teggins said the Lions Emergency Accommodation Centre is located at Nambour. Amongst the people they assist are mothers who are victims of domestic violence. These mothers often present with children and it is these children who will hopefully gain pleasure from these toys.

Beerwah REAL ESTATE NEWS: Things we didn't know last year! January might once have been considered a time when the real estate market experienced a natural lull. But, thanks to several factors - from smart phones to a change in selling seasons - those days are well and truly over. New listings are needed to provide buyers with property now, for possible settlement early in the new year. Especially require homes in the $300k to $450k range - in town and also small acreage.

Coochin Creek Co-op is ‘All in for Finn’ Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers Co-op has announced that four cents from every litre Beerwah of petrol sold from Monday, December 16 until Sunday, December 23 will go towards the fundraising efforts to support 13-month-old Finn Smith.

Finn’s grandmother Leona Coureas has been the manager of the Shell shop for a number of years. While the Co-op has already donated to the fundraising campaign, the Co-op Chair Robert Frizzo said: “We really wanted to do more to assist in raising funds and see this as a way to do that. “We want the community to know that this is a very genuine offer,’’ Robert said. “We will not be raising the price of petrol to do this – it is a four cent donation from the regular price of the petrol. “We really hope that the community will support this initiative as everything we do now will help Finn and his mum and dad in the long journey to his recovery.” They are also organising a multi draw raffle to raise additional funds – so far there is a stainless steel barbeque, a meat voucher, some turf and other prizes still being finalised. Finn Smith was diagnosed with meningococcal on Friday, November 22 and is currently in the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane. Initially, Finn was in intensive care in an induced coma and was fighting for his life. He has continued to battle and gradually things have been improving to the point that he is now in a general ward and the focus of his treatment is on working to save his limbs.

Leona with Finn before Leona with Finn in the he became ill hospital last week As a result of meningococcal, his hands and feet went blue and on Wednesday he underwent surgery to prevent further infection by removing the dead fingertips. Since Finn’s diagnosis, his parents Jason and Sarah Smith have been completely devoted to his care and at no time have they asked for any assistance. However, a friend who could see just how difficult this journey was going to be began a campaign to raise funds for Finn to assist the family in Finn’s long term care. The campaign has been named ‘All in ... for Finn’ and is being driven by Hot FM and the Sunshine Coast Daily. If you would like to follow Finn’s progress, there is also a Facebook page: Little Finn Smith Fundraiser. Donations for the family can also be deposited in Suncorp account: BSB 484799, account number 507005873, account name: Jason and Sarah Smith.

Road safety out on a limb Luckily for Brett Parkhurst, his Landcruiser is built tough. Otherwise, the outcome of a tree branch which hurtled onto the roof of his four wheel drive may have been far more dire. The Peachester local was travelling home along Commissioners Flat Road during the ferocious storm on December 5, when a large overhanging tree branch fell, crashing onto the roof of his car. “If I was driving something not as sturdy, the consequences could have been fatal,” Brett said. “Along the whole length of Commissioners Flat Road there are big overhanging branches. “After every storm, there are branches down along the road. It’s a wonder there hasn’t been a serious accident.” A similar thing happened after a storm event four weeks ago, leaving locals to clear up the mess to make the road safe. “I contacted council to report the danger of having the large branches on these old trees hanging right the way across the road, but the response I received wasn’t very encouraging. “The Council Call Centre person said that they would inform the council arborist, and that the turnaround time would be six to eight weeks.” But Brett said that something needs to be done now. “We’re right in the middle of ‘storm season’ and they need to be trimmed now before any more storms rip through the area,” he said. “Someone could be killed by one of these massive branches falling onto the road.”

Gary Edwards, the manager at Glasshouse Country Coaches, concurs with Brett. “There are some dangerous stretches of roads where low hanging and overhanging branches are a real safety concern,” Gary explained. “And it’s not just Commissioners Flat Road – Old Gympie Road and Mt Mellum Road are also problem zones.” Glasshouse Country Coaches is regularly subjected to the dangers these branches pose. “We’ve recently had two school bus windscreens smashed within a week. It costs us $1800 to replace one – so having it smashed a week later is pretty serious.

“There doesn’t seem to be any regular inspection of tree hazards along the roads or any maintenance work done by council,” Gary said. GC News asked Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski how Sunshine Coast Council deals with dangerous trees and branches along roadsides. Cr Baberowski said that the council has protocols in place to look at potentially dangerous situations quickly. “In general, if the customer service officer receiving the call believes the issue is urgent following discussion with the requestor (i.e. there is a tree hazard or an immediate threat of tree failure) it is called through as an “urgent and hazardous” inspection request and inspected by one of our officers immediately. “For all non-urgent tree assessments the timeframe for an arborist to provide an assessment is up to four weeks, with completion of works expected to occur between six to eight weeks. “In the case of Commissioners Flat Road, we have been advised that Council’s Arborist Team Leader will attend the site as soon as possible and provide an assessment of what work is required. “We encourage residents to contact Council’s customer service centre on 5475 7272 for all tree-related issues. The customer service officer will take down the details of the request and action it according to the level of hazard presented.”

Aussie World does it again Aussie World is going from strength to strength and recently won, for the third year in a row, the significant Sunshine Coast Business Award for Tourism. General Manager David Thompson said winning the award again was a wonderful achievement and testament to the hard work of the staff and recent investment into the popular Sunshine Coast theme park. “Over the past couple of years we’ve invested millions of dollars and opened six new features; water ride Plunge, thrill ride Redback, fun Giant Slide, water play area Leak’n Logs, the Pink Shoppe and Phileas’s Fun Worx,” he said. “Plus we’ve won two awards from social travel website TripAdvisor which are based and judged

on reviews and opinions from travelers all across the world.” David says when you come to Aussie World you’re sure to find something new or different that you haven’t seen, tried or ridden on before.

App helps rescuers zero in on emergency callers Sunshine Coast residents and holidaymakers planning on bush walking or travelling to Fraser Island or to any isolated location should take the time to download an app that could help save their life. Member for Fisher Mal Brough welcomed the launch of the ‘Emergency+’ smartphone app by the Australian Government. The app gives people in trouble the ability to provide their exact location, as determined by the GPS functionality built-in to their smartphone. Mr Brough said more than 65 per cent of 000 emergency calls were made from mobile phones. “Sometimes, callers don't know their exact location – a critical piece of information required

by emergency call-takers,” Mr Brough said. When activated, the free app provides users with their GPS reference which they can verbally provide to an emergency call taker to pinpoint their physical location. OUR “It will make it quicker and easier for emergency services to reach you if you find yourself in SEAFOOD IS trouble,’’ Mr Brough said. “This can also save FRESH NOT the limited resources of our emergency services.” SNAP ‘Emergency+’ is available free on iOS and Android devices through the Google Play StoreFROZEN and the Apple App Store. Development of the app was funded by the Australian Government through a National Emergency Management Project grant.

Strongman has great start to season Beerburrum local Tim O’Shea started the 2014 powerlifting season well with a strong showing in the Global Powerlifting Committee's Equipped Classic in Brisbane on Saturday. Whilst normally competing as a superheavyweight, Tim has cut down to the under 140kg class for the coming season, with his results over the weekend qualifying him to represent Australia at the World Championships in Argentina in September. Tim opened with a 330kg squat which he made with ease. His second attempt was an Australian record of 365kg.

Unfortunately, Tim's belt failed on the lift, however he still stood up, proving this weight is his for the taking next time. Tim followed up with a 225kg bench press and a 285kg deadlift, giving him the biggest total in the 140kg class. Season 2014 now is completely geared towards the World Championships, although Tim will still compete at the Queensland Titles in March and the Nationals in June. Tim is looking for sponsorship from local businesses to offset the cost of competing in Argentina. If you are able to help in any way, please call Tim on 0412 355 153 or email gmstrongman@gmail.com.

Calling all local artists and artisans

Expressions of interest are currently being sought for original work to be showcased at Peachester State School's annual art show fundraiser for 2014. To be held over the weekend of March 29 and 30, 2014, the Peachester Art Show is open to all entrants and applications are being taken now. Suggested mediums for entry include oils, acrylics, pastels, watercolour, mixed media, sculpture, wearable art and photography. Entry fee for submissions will be $20.00 and works can be sold at the event. As well as promoting the talent of local artists, this event supports a very worthy cause – to raise much needed funds to upgrade the school playground which is in desperate need of maintenance. If enough money is raised, funds will also go towards air-conditioning for the school classrooms. There will be a grand opening night on Friday, March 28 with tickets to the gala event including a complementary drink, finger food, entertainment and a chance of winning the lucky door prize. Organisers are keen for artists to flag their interest in exhibiting as soon as possible as well as allowing them plenty of time to prepare their work for the event. They are also looking for local businesses to donate for raffle prizes on the opening night as well as three artists to donate art works for the major raffle. For more information, contact Corinne on 5494 9777 or Marnie on 5494 9004 or email peachesterssartshow@gmail.com or go to their Facebook page – Peachester Art Show.

with Senior Sergeant Bruce Duck As you should be well aware, there are major road works taking place on the Bruce Highway at the intersections of Bells Creek and Dianella Roads, the Bruce Highway and Roys Road and Roys Road. It is envisaged that this project will take approximately 16 months to complete. I have been in regular contact with the project manager and I assure you that the safety of the employees, road users and residents in and around these road works is paramount. There is a reduction of the speed limit on the Bruce Highway to 80km/h which will be enforced by police where possible. If you have any complaints with respect to these road works, there is a 24 hour hotline: 1800 156 350. This is manned during office hours and messages can be left after hours. Unfortunately, a driver who I can only refer to as one of those “bloody mindless idiots” allegedly decided to weave in and out traffic safety cones on this stretch of highway which resulted in colliding into the rear of a traffic controller’s vehicle, which the workers were seated in.

with Senior Sergeant Bruce Duck

On the same evening, another driver was involved in a three-vehicle traffic crash. This driver recorded a blood alcohol reading of 0.203, which is more than four times the legal limit. What were they thinking when they got behind the wheel of their vehicle and drove? It is just pure luck that a fatality did not eventuate. It reminds me of the saying ‘Common sense is not so common.’

Success for the Glasshouse Early Education Centre Glasshouse Early Education Centre, which has been operating in the community for more than seven years, was last weekend awarded ‘Queensland Childcare services – Most improved centre of 2013’. Centre Director Angela Hardey, who joined the Glasshouse Centre 18 months ago, said: “Our team has worked so hard to build the family and community feeling within our services and to be awarded this within our company of over 30 centres is a huge honour. “We wanted to express our thanks to the families who have their children cared for within our service and without their constant support we really could not have grown and bettered our services,” Angela said. The team was presented with the award at their end of year celebrations and were proud to bring back the award to share with everyone in the centre. “We would also like to additionally acknowledge Amanda Gurr, Lead Educator in the toddlers’ room, who was awarded Glasshouse Mountains Staff Member of the Year,” Angela said. “Amanda has been employed with the centre and company for seven years – well done! “We are so excited to be offering the community high quality care for children of all ages and to help parents feel supported as they watch their children grow and develop. Their degree-qualified teacher Silvia offers a funfilled kindergarten funded curriculum to support

children preparing for the school journey. They also have a very exciting vacation care program over the school holidays, so feel free to give them a call to find out more. They are promoting free enrolment to their service until February, so now is the perfect time to secure your spot for next year. “We provide meals at the centre so there is no need to stress about lunch boxes and making sure they are filled with a healthy variety of food as all the food is salt and preservative free and tastes fantastic,” Angela said. Glasshouse Early Education Centre is located on the corner of Coonowrin Road and Pool Street, Glass House Mountains. It operates from 6.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday and you can contact Angela at the centre on 5438 7311.

The Healthy Guru

Business feature

Craig and Leanda from The Healthy Guru know that December is the festive or 'silly season', where people are focused on enjoying themselves and having fun, which is then followed up with New Year's resolutions in January where people promise to look after themselves better. However, the team at The Healthy Guru want to encourage locals to lock-in their plans for the New Year now so they are committed to them and, most importantly, will start achieving results straight away. Craig said it is too easy on New Year's Eve to say "this year I am going to lose weight in 2014" but without a clear plan in place about how you will do this, it can just be empty words. They have created a Wellness Package for January where participants will receive a oneon-one visit with Leanda (Nutritionalist), Judy (Naturopath) and Emily (Kinesiologist) all for a special cost of $120.00 which is a 60% discount on what you would normally expect to pay to see the three of them.

Once you pay a $20.00 deposit, you can book in your appointment times for January ensuring that you are on your way to personal success. The girls will assess your individual needs and work out the best course of action for achieving your personal wellness goals. This may include weight loss, giving up smoking, alleviating the affects of anxiety and depression, or gaining body mass. “If you know someone that would love this kind of support to get them on the path to wellness, why not purchase a gift voucher from us as a Christmas gift, they can use it as a deposit or you could even pay for the whole package,” Craig said. Leanda also suggests that if you are looking for something a little unusual for Christmas gifts,

they have a range of lovely items in-store. So pop in and check out their jewellery, yoga clothing, crystals, timber decor items and salt lamps. “And if you aren't feeling your usual healthy selves in January after a little too much over indulging, then you should call into us at The Healthy Guru to discuss detoxing, as it is an excellent way to move past the toxic effects of the festive season,” Leanda said.

Community News Christmas Party

Contributed by Jenny Morris Glasshouse Country View Club I have just a short report this week. We enjoyed our ‘Elegant Christmas Party’ at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club with everyone dressing up in their outfits to create a festive atmosphere. The committee wishes to thank Kylie at the Sports Club for her help with our functions during the year. The best hat was won by Freda Lyttle and best dressed was Sue Kurtis. On behalf of the committee I wish everyone a merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Our next function is the AGM on January 15, 2014, with lunch at the Sports Club starting at 11.00am. Hope to see you all in the new year. View Clubs support the Smith Family in many ways by helping disadvantaged Australian children

Beerwah Lions

Contributed by Bob Banner The Lions had a busy start to December with 300 kilograms of empty aluminum cans collected. This brings the collection total for 2013 to almost three tonnes of aluminum sent off for recycling. Not only is this a splendid achievement for the Lions, it also speaks volumes for the local kids who, together with their parents, brought the cans in on the first Saturday of each month to earn some extra pocket money. Aluminum is used in the aviation industry everywhere in the world. From two thirds to three quarters of a passenger plane’s dry weight is accounted for by the share of aluminum in its manufacture. With the year drawing to a close, the Lions

would like to thank some of the local businesses who’ve helped the club during the year. To name but a few: Glasshouse Country News, Beerwah Meats, the IGA. stores at Beerwah and Landsborough, Beerwah Flowers and Gifts, Buck’s Bakery, the Beerwah Co-op and of course all the businesses who availed themselves of the opportunity to advertise in the Lions Business Directory during the year. I’m sure there will be others that I’ve accidently overlooked. But to all these businesses, thank you once again. Your efforts help us help the local community. The club’s final function for the year will be its Christmas breakup at Club Glasshouse on December 14.

Support for playgroup appreciated The Mooloolah Valley Community Playgroup provides support to families with babies to preschool aged children. It is also a place of fun, learning and engaging the local community. The local support they have received has been amazing in providing financial assistance to allow the running of the playgroup. In particular, Mooloolah State School and Outside Hours School Care (OHSC) kindly supported their playgroup membership, which allows families free registration (which is mandatory and usually at the cost of individual families) to Playgroup Queensland. Furthermore, earlier this year the playgroup did not have facilities to operate and the OHSC kindly provided their venue to use free of charge. The families of the playgroup are sincerely thankful and collectively made a gift in appreciation of the school’s support. The gift was made from all of the hands of the children and families. If you would like to know

Mooloolah State School Principal Michelle Brown and OHSC facilitator Belinda Mewes presented with artwork more about the playgroup you can go to their Facebook page, MVCPlaygroup, for details.

Peachester CWA

Contributed by Coral Beutel (Hon Pres) Our last markets were held on Saturday, November 30 in the rain. They were very successful in the inclement weather. The winners of the Christmas raffle were; first – Bill, second – Gordon and third – Barbara, all from Peachester. We held a great Christmas party on Monday, December 9 at the Collectable Shoppe, Peachester, where a delightful meal was enjoyed by invited guests, all of whom have contributed in some way to our ongoing success as a branch. Each guest received a Christmas gift to show our appreciation of their help. On Thursday night we will be donating four $50 vouchers to four students from Peachester State School. These encouragement awards have been presented to students for 22 years with Russell Merrett’s name being first on the honour board at the school. We will continue helping with the cooking at the school and the ‘Adopt a Granny’ at the playgroup next year as well as donating to worthy charitable organisations. We hope to run more craft days in the New Year. It is only with your continued support of our markets, raffles and functions etc, that we can continue to help those in need. Thank you so much and I hope you have a blessed Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year. God Bless.

Caloundra Family History Research

Contributed by Roz Kuss The group held its annual Christmas Luncheon on Wednesday, December 4. More than 40 members, including Patroness Mrs Judy McArdle, enjoyed the buffet meal in the Dolphin Room at the Caloundra Power Boat Club. A Secret Santa was held with lovely gifts exchanged by members, and a variety of Lucky Door numbers were drawn with prizes excitedly accepted. Carolyn Newton, Claire Moore, Margaret Lenz, Jocelyn Morgan and Angie Butler all shone in the Christmas Trivia quizzes and were suitably rewarded for their knowledge. The Monster Hampers were won by Heather Triffett, Rhonda Hind and Ina Kelly. A major fundraiser for the group, over 1,000 tickets were sold and it was only fitting that Rhonda, who had put the hampers together, was one of the lucky winners. President June Blackburn thanked members for their generosity in supplying the wonderful contents for the hampers, as well as Lucky Door and Trivia prizes which were donated by, among others, Valerie Thornton, Helen McDonald, and Margaret Lenz. In absentia, Member for Kawana Jarrod Bleijie was thanked for his contribution throughout the year, for printing of ‘The Caloundra Clipper’, as well as the Member for Caloundra, Mark McArdle, patron for the group, who was thanked especially for his valued assistance in the search for new premises. Members were given good news at the luncheon when the president advised that negotiations are underway to secure new premises for the group, from February 1, 2014. Further information on the group’s calendar of events, resources, ‘Caloundra Clipper’ journal, and activities, is available on our website at www. caloundrafamilyhistory.org.au. The right advice, and the right price After running Total Microsystems in Beerwah for the past five years, owners Daniel Moodie and Tara Smithyman know what locals expect: They want the right advice and prices that are as competitive as possible – and that is their focus. Daniel said they know that for many customers, being able to come into the showroom and speak to someone they can discuss their needs with and have their questions answered is just so important. “Customers have to feel both confident and comfortable with the person helping them. Our team has such a broad mix of skills and knowledge and this is one of our greatest strengths,” he said. “We have noticed that since Tara has moved back to our Beerwah store after working in our Maleny store for the past few years, she has been getting a very warm reception from a lot of our female customers. “Tara thinks it is because while she knows her technology, she speaks ‘English’ instead of

www.gcnews.com.au

‘computer speak’ so she can take the mystery out of computers and technical things,” Daniel said. “We are also fortunate to have my younger brother James working with us. He is our gaming and high end PC specialist which is important for serious gamers as they know ‘he knows his stuff’ so they can trust him.” Tara explains they specialise in custom built systems for gaming, graphic design and CAD use – so they build PCs to specifically meet the needs of individual clients. “For example, what you need for a computer used solely for gaming, is very different than for someone using AutoCAD, and different again to just general use at home or for school homework requirements,” Tara said. What this means for their customers is great customer service and the knowledge that the product they’ve purchased is a perfect fit for their needs, so they’ll have peace of mind when they walk out the door. “And remember, if you already have a written

Business feature

quote from another technology business, bring it in when you come to see us and we will be able to match it,” Daniel said. “Tara likes to describe the experience customers have when they shop with us as ‘Awesome’ so, if you haven’t been in, come and see for yourself.”

More good results for Cassi

Young Beerwah local Cassi Hilbers’ passion and dedication to music is definitely being recognised by the music industry. She recently took out sixth place in her category at the Australian Songwriting Awards in Sydney. Cassi’s mum Tracey said: “This was really awesome as she was up against adults in her section!” Cassi is also one of seven semi finalists in the Tamworth Songwriter’s Association National Songwriting Awards in the Youth Section. We will have to wait until January 21 to find out how she goes in Tamworth – but in our community we already know she is a winner.

Concentration at its best

Mooloolah After School and Vacation Care Program

The Mooloolah After School and Vacation Care Program is open to all enrolled children with vacancies currently existing for the Christmas and New Year school holiday program. Jam-packed with fun, each week will feature a different set of activities to ensure the holidays are never boring. Some of the featured weekly themes include: Christmas week – where the kids will be painting singing reindeers to take home for a gift, Harry Potter week, environmental week and Australiana and back to school week. Another highlight for the holidays will see a nine hole mini golf course coming to the centre so kids can enjoy themselves and putt around all day. Other planned activities include going ice skating, having pizza and a special excursion to the movies. Throughout the holidays, the vacation care program will also offer swimming at the Mooloolah Pool twice a week, as the pool is now back open and in full swing. To find out more about what activities are available or to enquire about enrolling your child, please call the centre on 5494 7491. The centre will be open throughout the school holidays except from the Christmas week until January, 6, 2014. www.gcnews.com.au

Merry Christmas and happy New Year

As Christmas fast approaches, I would like to take the opportunity to extend my best wishes to the community for a safe and happy festive season. However you choose to spend your Christmas, I trust you will find some time to relax and reflect on 2013 and plan for a happy and prosperous New Year with plenty of exciting new challenges. Family is so important at this special time of year and I know I am looking forward to spending quality time with mine (in between work commitments, of course!) I have caught up with many people from community groups, local businesses and schools across the Glass House electorate in the last month to celebrate the season and I thank you for your ongoing support of myself and our thriving community. Over the Christmas period, my office will be closed from 12.00noon Monday, December 23 and will re-open on Monday, January 6. If you have an enquiry that pops up over that time just send the office an email and we will respond as soon as we can during the week we re-open. Our email address is glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au. Best wishes to you all for a merry Christmas and a cracking start to 2014.

Emergency one stop shop

The Government recently announced a new Emergency ‘one stop shop’ for Queenslanders seeking information on emergency services and disaster management. I encourage locals to spend some time checking out this site to ensure you are prepared in the case of an emergency over the summer period – www.qld.gov.au/emergency. This site contains valuable information on current bush fires including local bushfire maps, Rural Fire Brigade boundaries and local Fire Warden details.

The Queensland Plan: a 30-year vision for Queensland

The working draft of The Queensland Plan: a 30-year vision for Queensland has now been released. I want to thank all those who have contributed to the process so far and I encourage everyone to view the working draft which is available for review until March 7, 2014. The draft is based on a compilation of what Queenslanders have told us they want in 30 years’ time and it provides us with a great opportunity as a community to realise the future we want. The working draft is available on the website www.qld.gov. au/queenslandplan.

School safety boost

I’m really pleased to again share with you some good news regarding improving the safety of our schools. The installation of flashing lights has just been completed at Glenview and Landsborough State Schools. This is in addition to Glasshouse Country Christian College and Beerwah State School, which will receive them from next year. These flashing lights are designed to alert motorists that they are nearing a school zone and to exercise caution and slow down. Unfortunately children are sometimes unpredictable when crossing roads, so it’s really up to us to drive to the speed limit and always be alert. It’s also timely to remember that the speed limits in school zones are 40km/h from 7.00am to 9.00am and 2.00pm to 4.00pm. Only slowing down when you see a crossing lady is not good enough as sometimes they’re not there during the entirety of those times. This safety boost is thanks to the State Government’s $10 million, four-year project to install more than 300 flashing lights at school zones across the state.

Christmas wishes

It’s hard to believe 2013 is almost over. I’d personally like to thank each and every one of you for allowing me to represent you as your local member once again. We as a community certainly achieved a lot this year including: a $1.3 million 650-metre shared path from Kilcoy-Beerwah Road to Pine Camp Road, an extensive review of Ewen Maddock Dam, ensuring the Mooloolah Pool remained open and a $1.5 million upgrade of the Hardwood Road/Railway Street intersection along Steve Irwin Way, Landsborough. I’m also pleased to see many of our local schools and community organisations received government grant funding this year including Beerwah State High School, Beerwah, Landsborough and Mooloolah State Schools, the Mooloolah and District Horse and Pony Club, Suncoast-Hinterland Softball Association, Beerwah and District Kindergarten, Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade and the Lions Club of Beerwah. On behalf of my wife Judy and myself, I’d like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. I look forward to seeing many of you in 2014. www.gcnews.com.au

School News Best in Queensland

During the recent end of year award presentations there was one ICAS award that really stood out. ICAS stands for International Competitions and Assessments for Schools. It is a comprehensive suite of independent academic assessments for the subjects of Computer Skills, English, Maths, Science, Spelling and Writing. Isabelle Westaway from Glasshouse Country Christian College came top in Queensland for the ICAS Year 9 Writing test. A special presentation was held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre and it had all the aplomb of a university graduation. Isabelle said she loves writing but was surprised and excited by the result. “Normally I don’t finish the ICAS Writing test because the ideas keep flooding in so I run out of time,” she said. Points are given for ending well and this year Isabelle was able to conquer the temptation to keep writing and pull it all together. Mike Curtis, the principal of Glasshouse Country Christian College, also attended the ceremony and said it was a proud moment for the school. “Isabelle’s achievement is a testament to her skill as a writer and the quality of teachers we have here at GCCC,” Mr Curtis said.

A time to celebrate

Glasshouse Country Christian College’s upper primary concert had the theme of ‘there being a time for every purpose’ – taken from Ecclesiastes 3:1-8. The students creatively interpreted and applied this verse throughout their performances and the result was fantastic. There was dancing, acting, singing, guitars, drums, cartwheels – and more onesies than a teenage sleepover. There were fun items, serious performances, sci fi re-enactments, hip hop turned country and western dances, giant nativity shadows, glow in the dark images and enough lip synching to outshine Milli Vanilli (for older readers). After each performance the ICAS certificates were handed out, as were the Encouragement and Spirit awards.

Special day for school

Beerburrum State School is lucky to have many volunteers helping in a variety of valuable ways throughout the school, from reading with students and staffing the tuckshop, to working in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program – and so much more. To say thank you to these wonderful and dedicated people, the school hosted a special morning tea for them on International Volunteers Day last Thursday. This special day was combined with the opening of the school’s 'Indigenous Bush Tucker Garden'. After receiving a grant from the Coles Junior Landcare Grant Program for the plants, and many, many hours of hard work by the dedicated team of students and volunteers – led by the amazing Mrs Lorelle Fisher – the school community can now enjoy this wonderful space in the school grounds. It is a true cause for celebration to have this

At the official parade, Indigenous members of the school community presented a dance, painted students’ faces and then later joined them in the class to create beautiful friendship bracelets. The school was also lucky enough to have Witjuti Grub Bushfood Nursery come along with a variety of 'bushfood' plants for visitors to purchase and create their own bush tucker garden. Hope lost

Just wanted to share a little gripe about the mess some people inflicted on the Mooloolah Valley Bowls Club. Someone who signed themselves ‘Aandee’ has certainly taken just about any hope from the club. As a result of their actions we are now thinking that we will close the Bowls Club. The perpetrator now has a key to our office. This is our haven but now we have no control over his future actions. Judy Walker Mooloolah Valley Bowls Club

Hope you are happy with yourself

To the person who decided to take the little inflatable polar bear on our front lawn in Dana Close at Glass House Mountains, I would like to say what a miserable blight on the human race you are. What possible pleasure could you gain from ruining someone’s Christmas light display? All you have achieved is to make all of my family upset, I hope you are very happy with yourself and may you get absolutely nothing for Christmas. We put this humble little display out for our own piece of joy along with the other nice members of our little street. You haven’t achieved anything through your actions as I will rectify this and get a new one out there. I would appeal to anyone with a sense of decency who knows the culprit that vandalised our display – please feel free to tell the police who they are. Clearly you can’t have been too bright as the power plug was within two metres of where you ripped the polar bear from. If you had unplugged it, at least it would still work, but instead you just ripped the power out and now you have useless piece of nylon with a LED light that won’t switch on and no fan to inflate it. Can you help?

Periodically the Rotary Club of Maleny puts out a call for unwanted fabric, haberdashery and sewing machines to send to the deaf school and the widows club in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. We would like more donations please to help assist the deaf young people to train them to sew so they can get jobs, and for the widows to make clothes for the poor children in the villages and to

sell in the market, so that they can supplement their meagre household budget. Please phone 5435 2106 to arrange for pick up. Thank you and Season’s Greetings to all. Ric Townsend President, Rotary Club of Maleny

Hospital for Beerwah

Now that the new University Hospital is well on its way in Caloundra/Birtinya, is it impractical to consider having a smaller facility in Beerwah, with perhaps a respite centre included? The excellent ambulance is already in place, although it would possibly be better situated on the town side of the railway station. I am sure the local medical staff from our clinics would be delighted with such an asset. Even little Kilcoy has a hospital, but I do realise there is very little finance available at present, so perhaps we could be put on the ‘needy list’, or maybe some private investor may see value in such a project. Mavis Robb Peachester

Re: Scary Maths

Cliff Schnick may well be scared by the maths (GCN 11/12/13); but no-one should be. The ‘maths’ fails to address the real issue – that the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is not changing! Why is it not changing? Probably because it is part of the life cycle (broadly, we breath out carbon dioxide; the plants use it to release oxygen which we breath in). How is it not changing? Possibly, the equilibrium between the dissolution of carbon dioxide in sea water, the increase in the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere above the sea water, and the solubility of that gas in sea water, increases to restore the atmospheric concentration of the gas to its required level. ‘Nature’ is very adept at preserving this equilibrium. It seems that Australia has known coal supplies to last us a few hundred years and, contrary to popular mainstream myth, crude oil supplies are not finite but are essentially inexhaustible and should last until the planet dies (the death of the physical planet that is, not just its population). We already have good technology to utilise ‘clean’ coal, petrol, etc. Promotion of this technology is surely better than nuclear power which seemingly remains on most governments’ agenda despite token nods to ‘renewable’ energy. And then, much, much better of course, there are the ‘alternative’ energy sources that have seemingly been buried by vested interests for decades – technology which would provide more than sufficient clean and cheap energy for the entire world! K Pullen Landsborough

Our Resource Recovery Centre

Last week I needed to drop off about 60kg of concrete, brick, stone etc, which I had removed from garden beds etc. I had placed this over half a trailer of green waste and topped it off with half a trailer of tree waste from storm damage.

On arriving at the Beerwah Recycling centre I was informed that they would not take the concrete and that I would have to take it to Caloundra where they “may”, I say again “may” take it at a cost to me. So I unloaded the green waste and the concrete and more green waste and then, not happily, loaded the concrete back into trailer, not happy. Surely the centre can set aside an area to be used to dump this type of recyclable material for ratepayers. They don’t appear to have a policy on this, even on the council website. It is simply not good enough to tell people to take it away and find their own way of disposal – wheelie bin perhaps? After all on this site it says they take whitegoods, scrap metal, bricks and concrete: http:// recyclingnearyou.com.au/large-dropoff/ SunshineCoastQLD. Well, do you or don’t you? Graham Richardson Beerwah

Your turn!

I never expected my cheeky joke about the kookaburra ‘racket’ to cause such a stir! I just enjoy a bit of a giggle and thought readers would see it for the silliness that it was intended to be and perhaps even get a giggle out of it too. I’d like to thank Lea for taking the time to clarify that it was ‘tongue in cheek.’ In the spirit of the festive season, I'd like to offer something fresh, if I may. I enjoy starting my day with a few thoughts of gratitude. Besides it being wonderful fun to count one's blessings, I find it really works wonders for keeping my mood elevated and my general perspective positive throughout the day – I highly recommend it. I'd like to share some of my recent thoughts with you. Five things I love about living at Glass House: 1. Walking along Coonowrin Road and bearing witness to the breathtaking mountain scenery and meeting friendly locals along the way. 2. Sharing my property with an abundance of gorgeous wildlife including many species of parrots, snakes, butterflies, lizards, frogs, hens, a rooster and kookaburras! Yes, I love them all, I am so happy to share my home with them. 3. Living in a climate where I can grow the most luscious tropical fruits or buy them at a low price from local growers. 4. Viewing the sunrise from the summit of Mt Ngungun – we really are so fortunate to live in such a majestic setting. 5. Laying in bed at night and hearing only the beautiful sound of frogs breaking the silence. Embracing the lifestyle Glass House Mountains

What a wonderful night

On behalf of myself and my family I would like to sincerely thank the Beerwah RSL for a wonderful night last Saturday when they hosted a rather special birthday party for me. The food and the service was just perfect and all my guests from far and wide were very impressed. I would also like to give a very special thank you to the lovely Julie Smith who went in on Sunday morning to prepare breakfast for us. I would highly recommend the venue to anyone contemplating a special occasion. Once again, to the staff and management of the Beerwah RSL, a big thank you. Vicki Heading Beerwah Hair and Beauty

Disgraceful

My dear friend and her three young children lost their husband/father in an accident in February this year along the forestry road between Glasshouse and Woodford. His family and friends erected a memorial at the accident site with some of his favourite activities depicted. How absolutely appalled and disgusted I was when I heard someone had stolen the fishing rod from his memorial. What is wrong with people? If you drive/ride past regularly you would know it has only been there this year. The accident and loss of her soul mate has only been survived thanks to the love of her children, and for someone to feel the need to steal from his memorial is saddening. If you teach your children the world is their oyster, ALSO teach them that not everything is theirs for the taking. If you know who removed this item, have a little chat with this individual. E. Cameron Glasshouse

Another question

Thanks to Cr Rick Baberowski for detailing how our Beerwah Recycling facility is funded. It was thorough and enlightening. One thing I'm not clear about: If we run the Beerwah Recycling at a significant loss (half a million dollars a year), why does the facility finance/sponsor community activities? Surely the monies would be more fairly spent to reduce the fees and thus encourage more people to use the facility rather than dumping on public roads, burning, or leaving goods of questionable value at or around charity bins. Peter Gawith Peachester

Walking trails at Ewen Maddock Dam

In a Letter to the Editor on December 4, 2013 a reader raised concerns over the newly installed steel barriers along the walking trails at Maddock Park, Ewen Maddock Dam. Seqwater appreciates the opportunity to provide clarity around the reasoning behind the installations. There has been no change to permitted activities at Ewen Maddock Dam. The barriers were installed to prevent bike riders from riding on the trails that are, and have always been, designated as being for pedestrian use only. These trails are well signed. Seqwater rangers had received numerous complaints about mountain bike riders using the pedestrian trails, with a number of near misses being reported. The steel barriers were installed to reduce the risk of a collision between a bike rider and a pedestrian on the walking trail. It is important to note that in addition to the pedestrian trails, Ewen Maddock Dam has approximately nine kilometres of multi-use trails which are permitted for mountain bikes. Seqwater also acknowledges that the steel barriers do stand out in the current setting. This is necessary to ensure they are clearly visible to riders. However, based on the feedback, Seqwater is currently exploring options for improvements to the look of the barriers so as to not impact the setting and amenity at Maddock Park. Dine In

with Lea Parkes

Eagle Boys Pizza

I recently caught up with Judy Fraser from Eagle Boys Pizza at Beerwah and asked her how things have been going. She said that the past few months have been very challenging for business owners and shoppers in Simpson Street with the disruptions to normal access to the shopping strip. However, things are definitely looking up. “With the new streetscape beginning to take shape it is easier to see just how attractive and welcoming the transformation will be for our local customers along with visitors and tourists to our town. It is so good to have the wonderful parking area back in use, which is making it a whole lot easier for people wanting to quickly drop in to pick up their takeaway order,” Judy said. The Fraser and Dobbie families of Eagle Boys Pizza Beerwah and their staff are so grateful to their many loyal customers who have continued

to support them through the trying times. “You can all be assured that you are appreciated and will continue to receive the best service and quality products we can provide,” Judy said. During the 13 plus years they have been trading, the family has made many friends, employed many local teenagers and other locals and been accepted into this friendly community. They would like to thank all the staff that have worked for them since they began trading, with a special mention to their manager, Bill, who continues to be an important and valued ‘family’ member. To show their thanks for the community’s support over these many years and in particular over the past few months, Eagle Boys Beerwah will be offering the following deals from Monday, December 16 to Tuesday, December 24:

Large ‘Classic’ and ‘Favourite’ pizzas from $5.95 each and large ‘Finest’ pizzas from $11.95 each (pick up only). “Christmas time, the season of goodwill and peace on earth is a wonderful time of year,” Judy said. “It is great to see our customers enjoying the Christmas festivities and sharing with their family and friends.” On behalf of the Eagle Boys family, she would like to wish you and your families a safe and happy Christmas and a bright, healthy and fulfilling 2014. They are looking forward to serving you over the festive season and the only times they will be closed are Christmas Day, December 25 and Boxing Day, December 26.

Christmas morning tea

Celebrating at the Pineapple Patch

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell recently held a Christmas morning tea at the Maleny Community Centre to thank representatives from local community groups, schools and sporting groups for the important contribution they make to our communities. He wished everyone a very happy Christmas and reminded them of how much he was looking forward to working together in 2014.

When GCNews popped into the Pineapple Patch to catch the Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch at their Christmas breakup party, we also met up with one special birthday girl from Peachester.

Things 2 Do Kings Beach comes alive with the sounds of Christmas carols

Join the festive celebrations as the Kings Beach amphitheatre comes alive with the spirit of Christmas on Sunday, December 22. Bring a blanket and picnic basket (no glass or alcohol) from 4.00pm to secure your spot and enjoy the roving entertainment before the official carols program starts at 5.30pm, with a spectacular fireworks extravaganza at 8.30pm. Local community organisations will also be on site selling food, drink and some festive cheer. Take advantage of the special event free parking at both the Transit Centre in Cooma Terrace and in Queen Street near the Caloundra High School. A free shuttle bus will operate from 4.30pm until 9.30pm with stops at the Transit Centre, Moreton Parade (Kings Beach Amphitheatre) and Queen Street (in front of the high school).

Intensive swim programs these holidays

Christmas holidays are a great time for kids to improve their swimming and at the Mooloolah Pool the new management, Cowan Taylor Aquatics, are offering some intensive swim programs over five days which will give the kids a head start for the 2014 first term. They are running two of these programs, one from January 6 – 10 and the second one from January 20 – 24. For full details on these events, see Swim Mooloolah’s Facebook page or, to book in, phone Georgina on 0413 929 197.

Special holiday art show for hinterland

The Blackall Range Visual Artists will hold a special holiday art exhibition and sale. This local art group meets each week at Mapleton to share their enthusiasm and expertise and are well known locally for their quality art and reasonable prices. With most members of the group participating, there will be a wide range of styles and media and sizes from which visitors will be able to choose. The exhibition is open 9.30am to 4.00pm from Boxing Day, December 26 to New Year’s Day at St Mary’s Hall on the Green in Montville. While admission to the exhibition is free, donations and sales commission go toward the maintenance of this historic hall.

Historic card collection

‘Best love to Tinie, from Nelly. Xmas 1891’. This was the Christmas message written on the reverse of a card received by 13-yearold Clementina Grigor. In 1891 Clementina was living with her parents, William and Mary Grigor, at Bankfoot House in the ‘Glass Mountains’. The Christmas card was well chosen by her friend Nelly. It shows a Scottish lass and thistle – representing Clementina’s Scottish ancestry, as well as a steam train – representing the new 1891 rail link between Brisbane and Gympie. Over 50 Christmas and New Year cards were preserved by the Bankfoot House families and remain in the collection. Birthday cards were also treasured, particularly from friends and family overseas. Willie and John Fraser (sons of John and Janet Fraser, nee Grigor) went away to the First World War. Both sons sent cards home to family from England and France. Sadly both were subsequently killed in action. The Friends of Bankfoot House wish all readers a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy new year. The volunteers will resume their preservation work at the house on January 22. If you are interested in learning more about Bankfoot House and its occupants, please contact the Friends of Bankfoot House on 5493 0197 on a Wednesday, or email friends@bankfoothouse.org. Ron Gillinder, President – 0407 760 989, in conjunction with the Sunshine Coast Council.

Merry Chr

Christmas messages from Glasshouse Country Rodney Jobe, Church on the Rise Beerwah, Maleny, Mooloolah Valley

What If God Was One Of Us Bette Midler sings: “What If God Was One of Us” If God had a name, what would it be? And would you call it to his face If you were faced with him in all his glory What would you ask if you had just one question And yeah yeah God is great yeah yeah God is good Isaiah foretold that God would be “ one of us” and gave us His name! Isaiah 9:6 For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. Jesus was no ordinary child. He was God ! He was born of a virgin called Mary. God made a new beginning in the course of His creation by becoming part of it. History was changed forever from B.C. to A.D. This Christmas remember that it is about Christ..mas He is the Reason for the Season As this is my last column for the year we pray a merry Christmas and a happy New Year to everyone from Church on the Rise.

N Noel M

Pastor Brendan Edwards Glasshouse Country Community Church

Twenty years ago my friend lost his little boy when a motorcyclist crashed into him on the road outside of their home. Devastated by the tragedy, the rider spiraled downhill into a lifestyle with drugs, alcohol and eventual criminal activity used to numb the pain and memory of what he had done. Our friend Chris, the father of the boy, regularly visited him in the local prison. Pain and loss was replaced with forgiveness and love as the two men became friends. Years later, Chris is now a pastor of a church, and again is involved in this man’s life, as he recently lost his own fouryear-old son in a tragic accident. Moved by the funeral, twenty family members decided to begin a new life accepting the love and forgiveness of God through His Son Jesus Christ. These two boys were taken from their fathers who would have done anything to keep them. This Christmas let’s acknowledge what it cost God to willingly give up His Son that we might live with Him.

The not so empty Christmas Tree

The Glasshouse Country Anglican Church community donates generously to the Empty Christmas Tree. The gifts are given, each year, to the Women's Refuge.

Merry

Eric and Merle place gifts beside the tree Dr Percy Harrold Seventh Day Adventist Church When the Christ-child was born there were presents; they were for Him. He, however, would provide the ultimate gift. Not just by coming as a baby, but by living His life here, then giving that life to retrieve us to God. What a blessing to be able to gift those who have little chance of receiving this Christmas. It might be the lonely pensioner next door, or the teenager estranged from his family, or the single mum finding it hard to provide for her children. Come to think of it, that's probably what He would do if He were in our shoes. Be blessed.

In many parts of Europe it is a tradition to leave an empty space at the table for a family's Christmas meal. This is in case the Christ-child should turn up during the meal. Another similar tradition is to give the equivalent value of one person’s meal to charity. May this Christmas not only be an opportunity for you to be with your loved ones, but also enable you to reflect on why we celebrate Christmas and to remember those for whom Christmas is not a time of joy and celebration. God Bless.

The Glasshouse Country Toastmasters members had a ‘secret Santa’ with a difference – they all contributed to gift baskets that they donated to Pastor Rod Job who will see that the goodies will be distributed to families who are doing it tough. Merry Christmas to all and Toastmasters will meet again at the end of January 2014. Blessings and safety on the roads.

Margaret Niethe Glasshouse Country Uniting Church

Henry Van Dyke once wrote asking if we are willing to believe that love is the strongest thing in the world; stronger than hate, stronger than evil, stronger than death and that the blessed life which began in Bethlehem all those years ago is the image and brightness of the Eternal Love? If we can but believe this in the midst of the Christmas flurry of shopping, planning, giving and sharing with family and friends; then we can keep Christmas; and if we can keep it for a day, why not keep this Love for always? Rejoicing in Jesus every day, Christmas Blessings.

“Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him.” Matthew 2:2 The three presents that the wise men brought had very important significance – Gold is the gift you give to Kings. Frankincense was a kind of incense, used to worship God in the temple. Myrrh was a spice used to embalm the dead. This unusual gift for a baby acknowledged that Jesus was the savior of the world and gave his life for us. I pray like the wise men you will not just see Jesus as another baby, but the Son of God. Merry Christmas.

M.R.W.L. Inc Plant of the Month Cunjevoi, Spoon Lily or Elephant Ears Alocasia brisbanensis This fleshy herbaceous plant evokes all things tropical with its very large leaves that are heart-shaped like an elephant ears, hence its common name. Cunjevoi can reach a height of two metres, making it a magnificent addition to any garden. It is very useful around a water feature and, once established, is quite hardy. The Spoon Lily’s habitat is sub-tropical rainforest which means it is found from North Queensland to Northern New South Wales. The flowers are small and yellow in colour on a spadix (stalk) which are highly perfumed, some would say overpowering. Fruit is bright red which attracts much birdlife. It enjoys a filtered position in the garden with morning sun. Just a note to advise that the nursery will be closing for Christmas from Thursday, December 19 and re-opening on Monday, January 13.

The basics on Lenders Mortgage Insurance There is a lot of lender risk involved when it comes to providing the public with home loans. After all, this isn’t a small amount of money shared between friends - it’s a large sum used to purchase the biggest asset of most people’s lives. Understandably, there is a little apprehension about lending out to everyone. There are a number of safeguards to help protect the interests of lenders, with a main one being the enforcement www.gcnews.com.au

of Lenders Mortgage Insurance (LMI). LMI is charged when a borrower wants to take out more than 80 per cent of a property’s value as a loan. The usual road to travel is saving up at least a 20 per cent deposit before borrowing the rest as a mortgage. However, sometimes it may be necessary to push this forward and borrow a larger amount. If you do need to borrow more than 80 per cent for your home loan, chances are you will be charged

the insurance. This is especially important in the event that, for whatever reason, a borrower is unable to make the repayments in full. Rather than leaving the lender completely out of pocket, the insurance helps to keep them up and running. Keep in mind that LMI is a oneoff payment charged on top of the loan, so there is no need to factor it into your mortgage repayments. However, the rules surrounding

LMI can vary from lender to lender, so it could be a good idea to get in contact with your home loan provider and discuss the options available to you. Teresa Harrison Phone 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098

LANDSBOROUGH MEDICAL CENTRE 5 Maleny Street, Landsborough. Phone: 5494 1799 20 Karanne Drive, Mooloolah. Phone: 5494 7444

The doctors at the Landsborough and Mooloolah Medical Centres have been providing an after hours service for their patients for the past twenty- nine years but it has now been decided to adopt the Federal Government’s initiative of the After Hours GP Helpline which has been established since 2011. When you, as a patient, call the service, your call is answered by a registered nurse who triages your condition. If the nurse determines that you could benefit from speaking to a GP, you will be transferred to a helpline GP. The GP will talk to you, assess your condition, and provide medical advice. Upon advice from the nurse and or GP, you may be able to manage your condition at home, or until you can see your usual GP during normal business hours. Where self-management is not possible and your condition cannot wait until the next day for treatment, you will be directed to Family Care Medical Services who are now our after hours medical services.

VIRGO August 23 - September 22

At the Gemini full moon this week, you may spend a lot on extravagant holiday presents or social get togethers. Venus moving retrograde, after December 21, may find you slowing down as the Sun enters the Capricorn birthdays. You will also feel drawn to expanding horizons through sport or business.

This is a week when you can pursue success unimpeded by distractions. This full moon keeps your options flexible regarding your career, however you are not to scatter all your mental energy until after the New Year. You may find yourself using a dictionary, regarding business, or on the social scene.

AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19

GEMINI May 22 - June 21

LIBRA September 23 - October 22

This full moon week, in the air sign of Gemini, has a most romantic connotation for some of you Aquarians! It signals a chance to express yourself with hugs and kisses and having some Christmas fun. This is a time to really enjoy yourself. Definitely look for the silver lining in all your work and health.

This Gemini full moon brings restless attention between your needs and others. When the Sun sign enters traditional Capricorn after December 21 any intimate unions require responsibility, so get ready to enter into a deeper commitment. This can be an important week for you regarding relationships.

The full moon in Gemini is likely to give you occasion to change your mind or plans. Perhaps there is some news concerning distant people. Some person, or circumstance, may force you to step out of your comfort zone, perhaps concerning your work or your family. It may change your thinking.

CANCER June 22 - July 22

This full moon in Gemini sets out recent financial details in such a way that might reorganise a partner and yourself. Take an inspirational viewpoint, rather than a logical one. Family disagreements may contend against something you believe in deeply, putting you on the defensive in your work.

This week the Gemini full moon brings your curious sector and gently pulls on you to spend time alone in a more soulful pursuit to receive your Christmas blessings. You are going to have a mystical awareness awakening under a Jupiter/Neptune aspect. An old relationship surfaces now.

TAURUS April 21 - May 21

Because this week contains a multi tasking Gemini full moon, it prompts you to have quick changes of mind, possibly because another’s advice is likely to be deceptive. The Sun sign enters Capricorn from December 21, indicating your personality and inner light may shine. Something arises from your past.

This Gemini full moon week this will have important connotations concerning your social popularity. Nervous attention and private worries, coming from a variety of sources, can affect your energy level. Guard secrets and confidences, as a slip of the tongue brings you some embarrassment.

LEO July 23 - August 22

This full moon week, being in the sign of Gemini, may incline you to change your mind about something or somebody. Just do your best to keep up to date. Be sensitive to the needs of those upon whom you depend for support. Focus on making positive changes. Ambitious drive increases from December 21.

It’s a jumpy Gemini full moon this week with perhaps some distracting affairs at home, thereby diluting your business focus. This is a time to act as a reminder to stop and smell the mistletoe! Hopefully you will have a sure-fire tension-relieving week to enjoy family fun. Retreat from all pressures.

ARIES March 21 - 20 April

This full moon week in your opposite sign, Gemini, puts your involvements with other people in the spotlight. The planet Uranus sets you on a more fulfilling pathway. Monetary transactions also should be carefully monitored. The financial concerns of other people may be brought to your attention.
