have to admit I am a bit of an extreme ‘recycler’ – I am totally committed to the concept. I love when our yellow lid recycle bin is full and our normal waste bin has just one small bag each week (I know this is probably a little sad but what can I say, I am obsessed!)

And along with recycling, I also love the philosophy of reuse – so I am also really happy to pass anything that we no longer use, either at the office or at home, up to the recycle centre at Beerwah for someone else to benefit from.

Save Landsborough Hall

In country towns throughout Queensland, beautiful old timber halls like the Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Halls have been at the centre of the community life for many years.

They host important local events, including dances, picture theatres, amateur theatrics, and debutante balls as well as family celebrations, christenings, and weddings and generally are a community meeting place.

Sadly these iconic buildings are not cheap to maintain – and it takes a dedicated commitment from the community to retain these beautiful historic buildings in place.

It is now time for the people of Landsborough to make a decision about the hall’s future - the Hall Committee is putting the word out that help is going to be needed in the next few years to find the $300 000 that is required for renovation and maintenance of the hall so it can continue serving the community.

Many readers may not be aware, but the hall is not council owned and funded, but owned in trust by the people of Landsborough. It is managed by

an amazing committee; a group of volunteers who over the years have worked endlessly to keep the hall up and running, but now they need our help to save this piece of our history.

The historic hall that was built in 1927 has weathered floods, mini cyclones and drought and the 2nd World War as well as the wear and tear of many community events.

These days it is home to dance classes, Rhee Tae Kwon Do, craft groups, line dancing, fitness classes, ballroom dancing, church meetings and even a weekly market.

Recently born and bred Landsborough locals Deb McIntyre and her daughter Casey have become members of the Hall and are eager to move the fundraising efforts ahead.

Casey said it was so important that the community pull together to support this cause as it would be unthinkable that this historic part of our community would just slowly fade away.

“One of the first fundraising efforts that we are planning is a good old fashioned Cent Sale to be held in November - so if you or your business would like to donate towards this event please contact me on 0409 982 578,” Casey said.

“We will be keeping the community up-to-date on our activities through the Glasshouse Country News and via our Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall Inc Facebook page.”

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said the flashing lights will assist to warn motorists to slow down in school zones.

“The safety of our school children is a top priority for any community and the installation of flashing warning lights in Beerburrum will act as a continual reminder to motorists to slow down and take care in school zones,” Mr Powell said.

“We believe these signs are going to go a long way in reminding drivers they are approaching school zones and need to slow down immediately.”

The safety of all road users is our top priority, and that is certainly the case for our littlest Queenslanders.

Children are by nature unpredictable, and may not be concentrating when they approach the streets or roads next to a school. Speeding through school zones greatly increases the risk to all pedestrians, as the faster a vehicle is travelling, the longer it takes to stop and the greater the severity of impact.

The Newman Government has committed $10 million over four years to install flashing light signs at over 300 school zones.

On Sunday, July 28 our local school chaplains Mike (Beerwah High), Donna (Beerburrum Primary) and Linda (Beerwah and Landsborough Primary) are running a combined Golf Day. This year’s event is being supported by ‘Stream Financial’ and a host of other very generous local businesses.

SU Qld chaplains, or 'chappies', provide emotional and spiritual support to school communities.

They are in the prevention The Pump House team members Justin and support business: helping Rummery, Ray Miller, Shane Putan and students find a better way to deal Chaplain Mike Turner with issues ranging from family breakdown and loneliness, to drug abuse, depression and anxiety.

They provide a listening ear and a caring presence for kids in crisis, and those who just need a friend. They also provide support for staff and parents in school communities.

This golf day has been running every year for nearly 10 years thanks to its previous major sponsor ‘Beerwah Supa IGA’.

All funds raised from these events were a huge boost to the full time chaplaincy service of Beerwah High which is still primarily funded by donations. This year our primary chappies can be supported too!

Each year the winning team gets their name on the Westpac Trophy plus some awesome prizes - there are also prizes for the runners up, nearest the pin, longest drive, best dressed team etc.

As well as the presentation of prizes there is an auction with a range of items to bid for. It's a fun event for families, businesses and groups of friends. Registration and brunch is at 11.00am, hit off at 12.00noon.

Liam’s ‘Faster’ Aria debut

Many locals will remember the gorgeous little Glasshouse Pony Club Member – Jess Wall who passed away aged nine in 2011.

In remembrance of Jess, the Pony Club established the ‘Jessica Wall’ LIVE. LOVE. RIDE Gymkhana which was run for the first time last year – the theme for the day is pink and purple (Jess’s favourite colours).

The riders in the event last year enthusiastically embraced the theme and there were some rather fantastic creative entrants both riders and their horses.

This year’s event is being held on Sunday, July 21 at the Beerwah Sportsground, and the ponyclub would love to encourage spectators to come along and share in the fun and the colours of the day.

The event is for members of Pony Clubs and they are expecting 100 riders to compete this year.

Jess’s mum, Kelly Wall said they will be fundraising for the Kidney Foundation.

“We support this because Jess passed away due to kidney disease complications,” she said.

The action will kick off from about 8.00am when riders will be preparing themselves and their horses and the day will finish at about 3.00pm.

A week after release, Liam Brew’s second album ‘Faster’, has debuted at #20 on the ARIA Australian Artist Country Albums Chart.

"To make the ARIA chart in the first week of release as an independent artist is such a thrill.

Especially considering how much hard work we've all put into this album, it's a nice reward and makes me incredibly proud," says the Palmview local.

The 10 track album release was produced by good mate, Rusty Crook in Sydney and on the NSW Central Coast. It features three self-penned tracks and a duet with current Toyota Star Maker Kaylee Bell – the pair have recorded ‘Is It Raining At Your House?’ – the Vern Gosdin written track which was previously released by Brad Paisley.

‘Faster’ is the follow-up to the debut album ‘Wild Heart’ as part of Liam’s prize when he was named Toyota Star Maker in January 2009.

Since then the College Of Country Music graduate has been asked to join some of Australia’s finest in concert – Adam Brand, James Blundell, The Sunny Cowgirls, Lee Kernaghan and The McClymonts. Opening the inaugural CMC Rocks The Hunter festival and sharing the bill with US superstars Alan Jackson, Joe Nichols and Jack Ingram plus Aussie heavyweights Kasey Chambers and Troy Cassar-Daley was a career highlight.

Liam is currently on a short break from The Turn The Page Tour – featuring fellow Toyota Star Maker alumni Travis Collins, Luke Austen and Luke Dickens.

The tour was born after the four artists performed the Bob Seger classic of the same name to 10,000 people over two shows at the 2013 Tamworth Country Music Festival.

Miss Rebecca opened the dance school just over a year ago, offering classes at the Landsborough School of Arts Memorial Hall but since moving to their own premises in Dyer Road at Landsborough is now able to offer over 28 separate classes each week.

CSTD Ballet, Jazz and Tap is one of the great International Dance Societies proudly serving dance for 80 years providing examinations in all major dance disciplines from tinies to teacher qualifications throughout Australia and the Asian Pacific region.

Miss Rebecca said a few hand selected students sat their CSTD Ballet and Jazz exams in late June.

“We have just received our results, five students were awarded honours and four were awarded highly commended with the rest of the students passing highly as well,” she said.

“Some of the students that sat their exams have only had a year’s training with me and have achieved such a high mark because of their commitment to dance and their training.

with Senior Sergeant Bruce Duck Crime Statistics As previously reported in the media, anyone who has computer access is now able to view the crime statistics for their street, suburb, postcode, council, neighbourhood watch area, police division, district or region via the QPS crime map. This online crime statistics portal can be visited at www.police.qld. gov.au. It allows the general public easy access to what is happening in their neighbourhood and the data is one week in arrears. It is hoped that by having this information available to the public that appropriate crime prevention strategies can be developed in partnership with the police to ensure a safer community.

On that note, last years reported crime within the Beerwah / Landsborough divisions rose by 86 offences (4.95%). Of the total crime reported 78% was solved which was the same as the previous year. The major increase was assaults, 56 >65, Robbery, 3>7, Drug offences, 339>388, Fraud 18>37 and Property damage 141>171. The major decrease was Unlawful entry 140<115, Unlawful Use Motor vehicle 36<34 and Enter Vehicles 139<120.

Graffiti The presence of graffiti can cause people to feel unsafe. It creates a perception that nobody cares about the area, and if left unattended it often attracts more graffiti and may even encourage other more serious crimes. Graffiti impacts on the health and well-being of a community.

As most of you would be aware there has been an increase in this type of crime over the past year, the majority of these offences having been committed by juvenile offenders. The good news is that the majority of these offences have been solved. The bad and sad news is that after appearing in court and receiving a slap on the wrist, these miscreants of society do it again. The Telstra exchange in Landsborough is unfortunately a target for these reprobates.

If you are a parent of one of these hellions, how about you step-up and provide the appropriate guidance?

After many inquiries we have been in touch with the regional manager at Telstra and arrangements are being made to have these graffiti eye sores removed. Inquiries are also under way to have this area (which has become a common walkthrough) locked and entry prohibited to the public, in an effort to decrease these crimes.

As a result of this type of crime the Sunshine Coast Council in partnership with the QPS and other stakeholders will be involved in a pilot project in Beerwah and Caloundra named ‘Drawn Together.’ This is a crime prevention project that will hopefully effect cultural changes in graffiti management, rather than simply removing graffiti. More on this will be provided by the SCC in the not too distant future.

Beerwah High School Interact Club (Junior Branch of Rotary) are hosting two luncheon fundraisers to support Destiny Rescue a non-profit charity based on the Sunshine Coast.

They are dedicated to rescuing the children caught in the sex slave industry. Every 26 seconds a child is sold, tricked or stolen into this modern form of slavery.

Their destiny is stolen from these children and they are left scarred both physically and mentally.

As young people we feel strongly about the importance of the work that Destiny Rescue do which is why we have organised a number of fundraising events.

Indiyum Indian restaurant in Caloundra have been an amazing support, providing a full Bollywood style buffet with chai tea and cool water on Saturday and Sunday, August 10 and 11 from 1.00pm to 3.30pm. Cost is $40.00 per person.

As well as amazing food and fantastic friendly service, there will also be various donation boxes for beautiful crystal bindis and henna tattoos for $2.00.

Peachester Garden Club

Contributed by Pam Innes Members of Peachester Garden Club welcomed guest speakers Dorothy Robb and Rimini Mckenzie to their June meeting.

They informed us of plans for National Tree Day at Peachester School on July 26 and invited members to take part. They also told us of their project of eradicating camphor laurel trees and preparing an Aboriginal Food Walk.

Our ‘Senior’ member Nessie Pratten, pointed out the irony that every school used to plant a camphor laurel for shade. Another project of the

Peachester School group is planting vines on which Richmond Birdwing Butterflies feed.

Winners of the competition bench for June were 1st Coral with 17 points and 2nd Kath with 16 points.

The July 18 meeting of the club will be Friendship Day when they are hosts to members of other garden clubs. Guest speaker will be Noela Frizzo who will demonstrate making corsages.

If you have ever been to a local community event you will probably have seen the dedicated ‘Crew in Orange’ hard at work behind their big barbeque.

When the Beerwah Lions members aren’t cooking sausage sizzles, most of them are kept busy with full-time jobs and running businesses.

I recently caught up with this year’s Beerwah Lions Club President – Rita Sanderson (the club’s third female president in their 45 year history) at her day job at Stockdale and Leggo in Caloundra where she works as a Property Manager, to find out more about what is involved in being a Lion.

When did you first become a Lion and how did you get involved?

I have been a Lion for just over six years now, ever since my husband Trevor and I moved to the area when I was working for First National Real Estate in Beerwah. One of the Principals of the real estate, Denise and her husband Max, have been involved in Lions for many years and Max invited us to come along.

What made you decide to become a Lion?

In the beginning, I saw it as a way of meeting people and becoming connected into my new community, and now six years later I am really committed and count many of my fellow Lions as close friends.

What do Lions Club do?

Our club is involved in many projects including recycling of aluminium cans, selling Christmas cakes and puddings, recycling reading glasses and mobile phones, Youth of the Year, various Lions International projects and the Glasshouse Country Business Directory.

We also provide barbeques for the monthly Coastal Village Markets, the CWA Markets, and we run the photographic competition as well as a big day of catering making hot dogs, rolls and sandwiches the Beerwah Charity Sports Day.

Why would you encourage others to become involved in Lions?

Absolutely, Lions is a great organisation to be involved with, and it is rewarding knowing that the effort you put in can make a significant difference to so many. My advice if people are interested in joining but aren’t sure they have the time to get involved, is to come along and find out about all the different projects we undertake and just offer to take on what you can. Even if that time might just be helping out at one barbeque a month.

How big is the club and how old are the current members?

We have around 20 members, five of them women, mostly people working in their 50’s with a few inspiring members still involved in their 80’s. So it would be great to find some new members, including a few young 40-year-olds to get involved.

How much does it cost to getting involved?

We have an annual joining fee of $60.00 a half year (which covers things such as insurance etc) and then at our monthly dinner meetings we pay $17.00 for the meal.

New owners and a new name The well-known Vanohr Brothers automotive mechanical workshop on the corner of Roys Road and Moroney Place, Beerwah, has new owners and a new name.

Now called Elite Mechanical and Spare Parts, the reins of the highly regarded service and spare parts business has been passed over to business partners Michael Jenner and ‘Barney’ Humpreys.

You may already know Barney from his other local business – Beerwah Exhaust, Brake and Radiator Centre, also on Moroney Place – which he has been running now for over 15 years.

And although Michael may be a new name for the area, he is an experienced hand in the mechanical trades industry, where he’s worked for almost 10 years.

Michael and Barney have been friends for a long time – with both being involved in speedway racing for around 15 years.

It’s almost two months since Tric Johnstone took on the role of Manager at the Beerwah RSL and it’s a role that she has been really sinking her teeth into.

For the past three years Tric has taken on a variety of relief jobs as hotel and motel manager and the time had come for her to plant her feet back in one spot permanently.

Beerwah Peachester RSL President Gavin Smith said with 30 years of hospitality experience behind her (including 10 years owning her own pub in Western Queensland) he knew she had the skills, knowledge and experience to take on the job.

When she first saw the Beerwah RSL she was immediately taken with what a great facility it was, and what a good feel it has about it. Taking on the Manager’s role was definitely something Tric wanted to do.

Tric said once she’d met the team of staff, she felt even more confident that it was a good move.

“It is great to have senior staff members who are well established in their roles and committed to making the club a success, and they have made my transition into the role all the more smoother,” she said.

Since taking over, Tric has done some reviewing of the menu and has introduced a number of special days.

Tuesday is ‘Steak Day’, Wednesday is ‘Roast Day’, and then there is ‘Schnitzel Thursday’ – on these days they are offering the super special prices for both lunch and dinner.

“We have introduced Saturday night’s ‘Burn the Bill’, where one lucky group will receive a total cash refund of their receipt on the night which people are loving,” she said.

“As we seem to be having more people come along on Saturday night – we are planning to also offer some live music on that night, as well as our regular Friday night performers,” said Tric.

The TAB seems to be proving popular with locals, particularly on a Saturday afternoon – the sports bar is a great spot to kick back for a quiet drink and to take advantage of the complementary nibbles and bar snacks.

Having a totally separate function area that they can close off for private use, is proving successful and recently they have hosted some really great events for local groups.

“If you haven’t been into the Beerwah RSL for a while – make sure you say hello to me next time you’re in – I love just how friendly Beerwah is and I am really enjoying meeting the locals,” Tric said.

With the happy couple are former Beerwah High classmates from the class of 2002 Angus Douglas and Colin Gavagan who made a special effort to attend the wedding.

Andrea and Zeb will live in Salt Lake where Andrea works in school administration and Zeb is completing his Doctorate in Linguistics. The photo was taken in the grounds of the Officer's Club at the University of Utah where the reception was held.

Thanks to Woolworths Beerwah for reminding us that Christmas is 'just around the corner'. They now have Christmas mince pies on sale - I was amazed that they would last until December, so I checked the 'use by' date - May 2014. They were made in New Zealand so I assume they would have been manufactured around May this year. Twelve months of 'guaranteed freshness' - WOW, what do they put in there...?

Taxi matters

Sharon Chamberlain’s slight dig at the local taxi service requires comment (GCNews July 10). And yes, I have a vested interest - I am one of the drivers employed by that service.

The current economics of owning and running a taxi service dictates that it is likely to be some years before any additional vehicle can be provided for this area - to purchase a taxi licence is a six figure sum; annual vehicle registration fee is a four figure sum; there are a number of compulsory government inspections (charged of course) each year; an employed driver takes home a commission from the shift total - but the taxi owner bears the full cost of fuel / wear and tear for that shift out of the remaining shift income.

The area covered by this single vehicle is essentially bordered by Beerwah, Beerburrum, Peachester and Coochin Creek. That is a reasonably large geographical area and there is significant ‘dead running’ between these towns to collect passengers (for example, the taxi may be in Beerwah but has to travel to Beerburrum to bring back a passenger to Glass House Mountains!); this often contributes to delays in securing the taxi, particularly on a Friday or Saturday night.

This is not the city nor a large regional town; do not expect to ring the taxi at the last moment and always expect its arrival within five to 10 minutes!

If you want to minimise any delay, book in advance - the driver will always try to accommodate you as best as he / she is able.

The current service operates 24/7, 365 days, a significant improvement in service compared to just a few years ago.

If you want a second taxi now, then I suggest that fares would have to be at least double, possibly triple, to make the overall service economically viable.

Drivers continually cop flak today for the ‘expensive’ taxi fares. What chance have we if they were to indeed double tomorrow?!! Alternatively, convince the government to reduce its charges by 50% or more. Good luck with that!

Bank staff make locals smile

If you recently saw the staff at Bank of Queensland in Beerwah dressed up like they were off to a fancy dress party and wondered what was going on – throughout July they are raising money for sick children in hospital called ‘Banking on our kids’.

The theme is ‘What we want to be when we grow up’. They did get some funny looks around town but they were happy to be embarrassed for a cause.

Even carrying their donation tins to their visits to the bathroom – they received generous donations as well as a lot of smiles!

Second funding round for ‘Get in the Game’ Local families and clubs can apply for the ‘Get Started’ grants from July 15 with the ‘Get Going and Get Playing’ opening on August 15.

These grants are designed to help Queensland families and clubs by reducing club registration fees and providing better access to finance new equipment and infrastructure. Breast screen More women than ever before will have the opportunity to access breast screening through BreastScreen Queensland. Previously only women aged between 50 and 69 were eligible but this will be increased to include women up to 74 years of age.

BreastScreen Queensland currently operates in more than 200 locations throughout Queensland and is supported by digital mammography technology with both fixed and mobile screening facilities to meet demand across the state.

Mooloolah Pool I would like to provide the community with an update on the future of the Mooloolah Pool. I am pleased to advise that progress is being made and we are hopeful that an announcement can be made about the management of the pool in the coming months.

The Mooloolah Valley Community Association and Mooloolah School P & C are continuing negotiations with Education Queensland and Sunshine Coast Council on what we hope will be a sustainable and practical operating model for the pool, which will meet the needs of all parties involved, most importantly the needs of the community.

The negotiations are complex and have taken more time to progress than anticipated, but headway has been made and I am pleased with the goodwill expressed by all parties and the desire by all to achieve the best possible outcome for the community.

Thank you to all involved in this project and I hope we can have the pool up and running before the swimming season.

Rogue Traders I have been working with members of our business community this week to stop rogue traders from operating illegally and in direct competition with local businesses in our hinterland communities.

If you witness vendors operating from vans who are new to your community, please be cautious about transacting with these operators without first establishing their credentials.

It is not legal for these vendors to conduct business without Community Land Permits, issued by Sunshine Coast Council and permits must be displayed on vehicles at all times.

The name of this local shrub is due to the fine rusty coloured hairs found on the buds and leaves. The leaves appear to grow in a circle with the upper surface dark green and the lower being paler.

Hairy Pittosporum is a relatively quick grower, preferring a lightly shaded situation protected from the hot afternoons. It grows to a height of 3m with an open habit, making it an ideal garden specimen.

The flowers are small, yellow to light cream and have a light fragrance.

Fruit is an orange/yellow capsule about 2cm in length, rough in appearance splitting into two or three valves revealing clusters of stunning red sticky seeds, making it a very popular native animal food source.

Run-off in catchments is one of the highest pollution issues in our rivers today.

All water from all sources when it hits the ground will run to the lowest point, and this is usually to a river, dam, lake or estuary. As it runs along the ground, contaminants such as rubbish, grey water, effluent, oil, rubber off car tyres, fertilisers, animal faeces, soil from eroded banks and many other products are caught up in the water. These contaminants can increase nutrient loads in our rivers, causing excess algal and bacteria growth impeding waterway from functioning in a healthy and dynamic way.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has found that the total number of private sector housing approvals throughout the country has grown, with Australian Capital Territory seeing the largest increase of 4.1 per cent. www.gcnews.com.au

Furthermore, Tasmania (3.6 per cent), Western Australia (2.7 per cent), South Australia (1.8 per cent), Victoria (1.2 per cent) and New South Wales (0.8 per cent) all experienced increases in their approval ratings.

These rises could signal a return of consumer confidence to the real estate market.

Peter Jones, Master Builder Australia’s (MBA) chief economist, said in a statement released July 4 that this was a positive shift - with approval ratings increasing 9.9 per cent in the five months to May this year.

“Low interest rates and the recent fall in the dollar should boost confidence and lead to improved residential building condition[s],” Mr Jones said.

This increase in approval rates coupled with the recent announcement by the Reserve Bank of Australia to keep the cash rate unchanged at 2.75 per cent could mean now is the perfect time to take the plunge and invest in a construction loan for property investment.

Blue Care is offering Sunshine Coast residents of any age living with a chronic health condition a specialised six-week program titled Living Well with Chronic Conditions.

Not too old My father used to travel in western Queensland selling Bibles and a series of children’s story books titled ‘The Bible Story’. As a teenager I was fascinated by names such as Chinchilla, Roma, Miles, and Charleville. He visited out west for three weeks at a time before coming back to the South East for a break, to replenish stock, and to catch up on the washing.

Sometimes the customer could not afford cash for the deposit on the books or the large family Bible he sold. Now 94-years-old, he remembers little of the events and people from back in the 1950s and 1960s. But I remember the time he brought home two kids as deposit; of the goat variety of course.

Then on another occasion he returned with a very worn and tattered, and decaying old Bible.

It had a worn leather covering and two large brass clips to hold it together. The binding had come apart and is now held together with tape.

Clues found in this fragile old tome indicate that it was someone’s pride and joy before 1893.

It also contained a lovely hand crocheted

I have no idea where it came from, nor who the loved aunt may have been. However some family west of the Great Divide probably purchased a new Bible for their family’s devotional needs.

Unable to find out the history of this old Bible, I trust the message the new Bible brought to the rural family was one of joy, peace and hope.

Regardless how old my Bible or yours is, it contains the message of God’s love in allowing Jesus to provide hope and salvation for each of us. If you haven’t read the Gospel of John lately, then now could be a good time to do so….. in your ageing copy, your new Bible, or your downloaded online version.

There is something special about letting God talk to you through His written word.

Recently two members of Mooloolah Pony Club qualified and made the 14 hour journey to Proserpine to compete at the Whitsunday Showgrounds in the PCAQ Queensland State Championships for dressage and combined training. Fifteen year old Peta Andrews from Glenview riding Tango and 13 year old Kenja Geurts, a Year 8 Maleny State High student riding Dixons Glamour.

Competition was held over three days and both girls were very successful, with Kenja placing 2nd and taking the silver medal for the Prelim 13 – 26 year old age group for dressage and Peta coming 2nd and taking silver for her group in the combined training.

Hinterland Boxing Club

Contributed by Stephen Pitt On Saturday July 13 the club sent a team of four boxers to the Fortitude Valley PCYC Tournament where three were matched for bouts. Jake Molloy won a tough point’s decision against Impact Boxing Academy’s Alec Aird-Cradiff in a closely fought contest.

Shanoa Russell fought an absolute war against a tough Caboolture opponent with both boys trading heavy blows before the referee stopped the contest at the end of the second round. Shanoa is one very tough kid and can hold his head up high in defeat.

Taylen Pitt fought a very good fight against a quality opponent from the Albert Boxing Club.

Taylen used his reach to great advantage in the first round, losing his way in the second before coming home the stronger in the final round.

Taylen was however on the wrong end of a poor decision.

All boys put in a great effort. Hinterland Boxing Club will next be taking a team to the Wide Bay Titles in Bundaberg on July 27.
