Hi Everyone

W

ell the end of 2012 is definitely getting close; with only a few weeks now until Melbourne Cup the pressure is definitely mounting about what to do for the day. This year there will be plenty of choices, including lunches at the Beerwah Hotel, the Beerwah RSL, Club Glasshouse, the Beerwah Golf Club and a high tea at Cafe Au Lait. Our lovely Sarah – world’s best receptionist and I try and get to all of the events and become like local paparazzi on the day capturing the ‘Glamorous of Glasshouse Country’. After touring nearly every Melbourne Cup Lunch over the past few years – I can guarantee that there is plenty of effort in bringing together some spectacular outfits and why not – how often do we get to dress up and play ladies during the day?

And to be totally prepared for this year’s fashion trends we have already been doing our research on what will be ‘hot’ for ‘the cup’. If you are wondering what looks will be a winner in the fashion stakes this year you might want to check out 19 with some tips that we have collected. But my advice is to find an outfit you love that makes you feel great – bung something stylish in your hair and find a perfect co-ordinating lippie and nail polish and enjoy yourself! And if you see Sarah and I running from venue to venue with our cameras ... remember to say ‘cheese’ or on Melbourne Cup day maybe that should be ‘winner’! Regards,

Flight aviary next step for Twinnies The latest project being undertaken at the Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue and Rehabilitation centre on Steve Irwin way is construction of a flight aviary. To make it happen, the Twinnies really need some additional support so they’re putting the word out for both donations as well as volunteers who can assist in the construction. They need building materials such as snake proof wire and colourbond, however what they would really love is a shade shed which could have the sides covered with the mesh. The Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue Inc. established locally by the Power Twins, Paula and Bridgett has come a long way in the 13 years since it began. The girl’s determination to grow and expand doesn’t show any signs of slowing down; they now care and release over 1,000 birds back in to their natural habitat each year. Since opening the Rescue and Rehabilitation centre almost two years ago, much work has been done to create a truly impressive facility which includes an intensive care unit for critical patients which is staffed 24/7. Once the bird’s condition has stabilised they are moved into a pre-release area where they’re cared for until they are ready to be released. The facility also includes ‘Pelican Paradise’ which is a fully enclosed spring fed dam that houses

Paula and Bridgett with recovering Gannets pelicans that are in permanent care due to injuries sustained on our waterways. The service relies totally on volunteers, community grants, membership fees, donations and corporate support to provide this vital service to the feathered fauna in our environment. If you can assist the Twinnies they would really appreciate it. To assist people in understanding what happens at the Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre they offer educational tours of their facility (for a donation), and it is open for all to learn about what you can do to save the birds of Australia. Around 95 per cent of the injuries the rescued birds sustain are caused by internal tackle or line entanglement, and the rest can be attributed to orphaning, displacement, being hit by cars, botulism, boat strikes and cruelty. To find out more about the Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue Centre take a look at their website www.twinniespelicanandseabirdrescue. com or find them on Facebook twinnies pelican and sea bird rescue or you can call them on 5439 9995.

Turning over a new page for wildlife Kids from all around the world can join Bindi and Robert Irwin to help save wildlife by reading as many books as they can in the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors Readathon. The reading frenzy begins on October 15 and extends right up to Steve Irwin Day (November 15), with all money raised going to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, which treats over 7,500 sick, injured and orphaned native animals every year.

Photographer: Ben Beaden/Australia Zoo www.gcnews.com.au

As well as helping our wildlife, Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors fundraising and appeals manager Bridget Chenoweth said there are stacks of awesome prizes up for grabs for everyone who takes part in the Readathon. "Raise over $1,000.00 and you'll get an incredible behind-the-scenes tour of the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital with Terri, Bindi and Robert Irwin," Bridget said. The top fundraiser will have the wonderful opportunity to be a reporter for the day with the ‘Australia Zoo Crikey’ Magazine team. Lots of other prizes are on offer, including tours of Australia Zoo, tortoise encounters, special edition Crocodile Hunter DVD box sets, 12-month subscriptions to Crikey! magazine, Bindi's books, plush toys, and stacks more. Kids are encouraged to collect sponsors for their reading efforts, who can choose to donate either per book or per minutes read. The more books you read the more precious wildlife we can save! Signing up is super easy - visit www. wildlifewarriors.org.au and follow the links for more information and to register. Best of luck, and always remember Books Rule! Bindi and Robert Irwin encourage other young readers to raise funds during the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors Readathon

The dream continues for Liam It’s been a long road since local lad, Liam Brew won the Toyota Star Maker in 2009 at Tamworth, and although he’s temporarily moved to Sydney to develop his singing career, he still calls Palmview home. Liam says that it's been a very long three years since he last released an album back in 2009. “I've been busy touring all around Australia with the likes of Adam Brand, James Blundell and The Sunny Cowgirls working on new songs and slowly but surely building my career. “Firstly I'd like to thank everybody who has supported me so far, all the people who have come to my gigs at the Beerwah Hotel, bought my albums/bought me a beer, or come across me at a festival and thought ‘I know this dude – he’s from my local town’. “Ever since I walked out of the studio as a young 19-year-old kid from Palmview, I’ve been so excited about the thought of doing it all over again with a new bunch of songs. “I've learned so much in the last few years, grown up a lot. At the start of this year I moved away from all my friends and family to the big smoke in Sydney which has been, at times, a tough change. “I've been down here saving money and getting ready for this new release and just cannot wait to get it out there and start touring back through all the cool towns I've come across,” he says. Liam now prepares for the release of the all-

Liam still calls Palmview home important album number two. Taking all that he learnt from making his first album ‘Wild Heart’, Liam plans to take things a little slower this time around and has already written a few tunes he hopes to include on the as yet-to-be-titled album to be released in March 2013. “I love you guys and really appreciate all the support you give me, and I can't wait for you to hear these new songs,” he said. If you want to support Liam's efforts to self record his next album you are able to pre-purchase your copy by going to www.indiegogo.com/ liambrewmusic You can catch up on Liam’s career on his website www.liambrew.com.au

Peachester Playgroup needs a helping hand The group has been going strong for over 30 years, but unfortunately the summer rains over the last two years have taken their toll on their little shed. Flooding has left continual rivers of red mud throughout their paved play area and water damaged their toys. Arts Co-ordinator Sally Joyce said to alleviate this problem they were asking if anyone was available to offer a donation of excavator time, to dig a much-needed trench (moat) around their shed. “This is a small job that will make a big difference to the everyday operation and cleanliness of our playgroup,” she said. “In return, we hope to be able to offer signage space along our front fence for the next 12 months.” (Design of the sign, not including production, can also be negotiated).

Councils working together

“The other great return will be the smiles on toddler’s faces as they develop play-based skills in a safe and secure environment, without the red dirt,” Fiona said. This valuable play outlet for toddlers and (support network for their mums) has continued to be available thanks to a string of volunteer mums, dads, carers and grandparents from the Peachester community over the years. Peachester Playgroup, as a member of Playgroup Queensland, is a non-profit organisation. The facilities are currently enjoyed, twice a week by over 20 families on Tuesday and Thursday mornings (9.15am – 11.30am). If you would like to join the playgroup or can offer some help please call group president

Sunshine Coast Council and Moreton Bay Council have met in Caloundra in the first joint meeting to discuss issues of shared interest. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said the councils have a lot in common. “We don’t just share a border – we have many of the same challenges and opportunities,” Mr Jamieson said. “We see this meeting as another part of steps towards closer communications and co-operation between the two councils. “From my first day as Mayor I said teamwork was an important part of making Sunshine Coast successful. “As a council we have worked well together and we also need to work well with other councils, the state government and the federal government. “If we get the teamwork happening at all levels we will be able to deliver some great results for this region and beyond,” he said. The meeting included the Mayors and Councillors from both regions, and the next joint meeting will be held at Moreton Bay.

There’s something fishy going on

By Greg Brown

It seems that the low water level isn’t the only problem facing Ewen Maddock Dam. The Ewen Maddock Fish Management Inc. group are battling bureaucracy in their efforts to see the lake become an important sport fishing destination for anglers to catch native freshwater fish locally. The group – which GCNews profiled in January this year – has been successfully managing the native fish stocking program at the dam since 2010 and has now also taken on the job of stocking Baroon Pocket Dam as well. But more recently, bureaucracy hurdles and funding cutbacks have placed some of the group’s efforts in jeopardy. The group’s President, David Brace has been battling to convince the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) to have the dam exempt from the closed season for catching Australian Bass – a species for which the dam is well known. “The closed season – from June 1 to August 31 – is meant to protect wild bass when they are breeding. But they need to move to brackish water for this, and so they can’t breed in Ewen Maddock Dam itself,” explained David. According to the DAFF website, there is a long list of other dams and impoundments which are exempt from the closed season for this very reason – but unexplainably, Ewen Maddock isn’t one of them.

Nathan Cooper with a 56cm Australian Bass from Ewen Maddock Dam “Fisheries Officers have been supportive and have put all the necessary paperwork through their systems, but it seems that, for whatever reason, higher powers have been getting in the way of the simple process of making the small changes to the regulations,” said David. “Public monies have been used to stock the dam with Australian Bass, and it makes absolutely no sense to stop families and tourists from fishing in Ewen Maddock Dam for a quarter of the year for no positive outcomes. “I’ve taken the matter up with our local MP, Mark McArdle who has just forwarded it onto the Fisheries Minister John McVeigh, whose department has already produced the necessary Regulatory Impact Statement for the matter to be resolved without further delay.

“But no one seems to be able to do anything positive. It’s bureaucracy and red tape gone mad,” David said. To make matters worse, funding that allows the fish stocking groups – such as the Ewen Maddock group – to operate have been axed by the new State Government. The long-running Recreational Fishing Enhancement Program was recently cut by the Government, ending a long history of government support for fish stocking groups across the whole of Queensland. “We previously received a $5,000 grant through the program, which went to buy a hell of a lot of small fish to stock into the two local dams,” said David. “We’re really thankful to our great sponsors and supporters for their invaluable assistance, but we’re only a small group of volunteers, and so it’ll take a lot of sausage sizzles to make up the $5,000 shortfall – and I’m not really sure how we’re going to do it. “It’s a real kick in the guts for local fishers and families, and for visitors who we are hoping will be attracted to the area for the great fishing that Ewen Maddock and Baroon Pocket Dams offer. The Ewen Maddock Fish Management group is always open for new members to come along and get involved. If you’re interested in native fish, looking after waterways or just love fishing, the group would love to hear from you. You can find out more about the group and their activities on their website www.ewenmaddock. com.au

With 150 of South East Queensland’s fittest men and women converging on the Glasshouse Mountains sports ground on October 28 for Coastal CrossFit QLD’s annual competition – ‘Clash on the Coast’ you will see plenty of action. CrossFit is a strength and conditioning program that combines elements of cardiovascular exercise, bodyweight calisthenics and weightlifting, which seeks to achieve a balance of ability within all 10 recognised physical skills – (cardio respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, accuracy, agility, coordination and balance). CrossFit gyms are comprised of everyday people who enjoy the challenge of the constantly varied nature of the program and you can expect to see anyone from teenagers to grandparents training side by side in the same environment. For those that want to take their fitness goals that bit further, CrossFit gyms regularly hold competitions where participants can test their fitness against others from all around the country. What sets a CrossFit competition apart from regular athletic events is that participants are rarely given any insight into the challenges that they will compete in until the day of the event. Participants could expect to have to run, jump, throw, lift, pull, push etc. The idea being that the person that has the broadest spread of physical ability should come out on top.

Headaches? Joint, Neck or Back Pain?

By Greg Brown The face of Frizzo Road at Palmview changed recently, with the long-waited ‘Palmview Sanctuary’ rural residential estate commencing construction. The 300-plus lot, 11 stage subdivision between De Zen Road, Frizzo Road and across the back of the Aussie World complex to Martins Road, created debate when the reconfiguraton application was originally placed before Council in 2002. After a 2005 court approval, the estate has seemingly been in limbo. But with the eight year currency period for commencing the development expiring on March

24, 2013 the works had to get started to avoid the development application lapsing. Tree clearing and earthworks commenced approximately three weeks ago on Stage 7 of the development – a 12 lot ‘entry area’ stage directly off Frizzo Road. The estate, once completed, will have two main accesses – one onto Martin Road (to the north of Ettamogah Pub) and the other directly onto Frizzo Road (to the south of Ettamogah Pub). With no ‘sunset’ clause issued by the court for the completion of the entire estate, it is unknown when any further stages will commence construction or when ‘Palmview Sanctuary’ will be completed.

Walkabout Wednesday Market Day October 24

Next Wednesday will see the second Walkabout Wednesday Market Day happening in the Beerwah Business Centre. The idea of the day is to encourage locals not just to pop into town for their essentials and head straight home, but to encourage them to take some time out and take a walk about town and see what special offers the local businesses have put out to tempt them. When was Beerwah Lions Club formed? The Beerwah Lions Club was formed in 1967, and we are proud to have one ‘Charter Member’ still serving the community after 45 years. However Lions International Association had its origins in 1917 in Chicago in the USA and became an international association in 1920. Where do you get your funding from? Although the public see the Lions members taking payment for food and drink sales at various community events this is certainly not Lions money, it belongs to the community group that the club is supporting. There are costs associated with us providing support at community events such as, barbecue trailer registration and insurance, repairs and maintenance etc however we do not charge for the service and all Lions members volunteer their time. However some organisations do give the club a donation, to help cover such costs which is appreciated. What type of activities has the Beerwah Club been involved in? More recently, hundreds of voluntary hours of work was given leading up to and at the annual Beerwah Charity Sports Day supporting Queensland Cancer fund raising; work to support the Christian College event and coming up will see many more volunteer hours spent at the Beerwah State school Big Night Out supporting the school and its students, then working in November and December operating the barbeque supporting three local youth events; a disco and two band nights, just to name a few. Where do the funds you raise go to? In the Lions movement we ensure that every cent we raise from the community is put back into the community helping those who are less fortunate than we are. Beerwah Lions annual Business Directory, the recycled cans projects and Lions Christmas Cakes, Lions Ladies street stalls etc are all for Community benefit. What about your administration costs? Our membership dues cover the administration costs of the club for things such as postage, stationery, phone calls, insurance for club property and ourselves while we are working on projects and so on. If someone in our community would like to get involved what would they have to do? Come along to a dinner meeting, get involved, we do need some more willing and community minded volunteers to help, plus we have some member fun times and celebrations as well. Contact the Beerwah Lions Club secretary on 5494 8896 for details. The Lions motto is – WE SERVE.

Community News Glasshouse Mountains Musician’s Club

Contributed by Michael Whiticker Ed Pannan turned up with three very beautiful Cole Clark guitars - an electric, an exquisite acoustic, and a Weissenborn lap slide. Singer guitarist Don was the recipient of the evening’s use of the guitars, and was so taken with them that at one point he offered Ed his hand in marriage as a means of gaining further access! He might have been joking but he seriously enjoyed playing the instruments. I had the pleasure of using the Weissenborn in three songs and found the clarity and evenness of tone across the instrument edifying. It was as though I had lifted

a veil from the sound I was used to hearing from my instrument! This week we were pleased to welcome back three very fine singer guitarists that we haven’t heard for a while – Ian Williams, Don La Brooy and Gary Josland. Don’s set covered vast musical territory leaping from the Box Tops to Canned Heat, from Johnny Cash to Ry Cooder, and from Rick Springfield to the Beatles! Gary’s performance is always soulful and committed. On Thursday I particularly enjoyed his version of the classic, ‘Will you still love me tomorrow’. Ian Williams remains for me one of our finest local song writers and his ‘Let it fall’, which I hadn’t heard before, was very moving. Other performers included our regular Doug Solow, Jon Brown, Toni and yours truly. Jon’s set included a version of the slow blues ‘Stormy Monday’ with a dedication to Wiley Reed, the recently departed blues great who had been living in Brisbane since the 60s and was well known to local blues aficionadas. Thank you Wiley, you will be missed.

Library turns into CSI Lab

The Beerwah Library was like a CSI lab when 20 young locals were entertained for the morning by Professor Jellybean. Each of the participants wore a lab coat and some cool goggles becoming a scientist for an hour. Professor Jellybean created plenty of fun, with the kids creating experiments including slime and a snowman that won’t melt, to take home. Colby, Taylah and Briana Leahy

Bowlers make their mark

If you are travelling along Coonowrin Road at Glass House Mountains and you take a look down beside the hall you won’t be able to miss the Bowls Club’s new mural. While the club is now known as Club Glass House, the bowlers have been able to use the

mural to reinforce their identity as the Glasshouse Bowlers. Bowls club President Dennis Hume said through the efforts of a number of bowlers who have a long and dedicated association with Glasshouse Bowls, they now have a prominent sign that says they are there! “On behalf of all Glasshouse Bowlers, we thank those bowls members for your time, effort and contribution to what is a great affirmation to the ongoing life of the Glasshouse Country Bowls Club,” he said. “The wording across the bottom of the mural is ‘A section of Club Glass House Inc. this also confirms that we are here for the long term.”

Graham Leach is a ‘Good Neighbour’ At the recent meeting of Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch Queensland, it was announced that Graham Leach of Peachester was the recipient of this month’s ‘Good Neighbour Award’. Graham was nominated by Bruce and Helen Page. The Pages listed the many activities in which Graham has been involved in, including Neighbourhood Watch, the Historical Society (in particular as co-ordinator of the cemetery project) and the Horticultural Society, and in Beerwah, the Catholic Church. Unfortunately, Graham was not able to be present to receive the award; hopefully it will be presented at the December meeting. We also had a lively and entertaining talk from Lauren Brisbane, representing the Australian Camel Industry Association. The ‘Good Neighbour Award’ now covers Peachester as well, as there is no longer a Neighbourhood Watch there.

Nomination forms may be found in the October newsletter of Beerwah NHWQ, or phone 5439 0520 or e-mail swilli17@dodo.com.au

This appeal provides shoeboxes of small gifts to children in disadvantaged countries, and also provides us a chance to experience the true spirit of love and giving at Christmas time! This year, the MSS shoeboxes will be going to poor children in Papua New Guinea and remote islands; for many of these children it will be the first gift they have ever received! This year Mooloolah students hope to surpass last year’s 81 shoeboxes, and send at least 100. Right now they are busily gathering shoeboxes to cover with bright Christmas wrap. also collecting and sorting items to include in the boxes. Each box will be packed with something to wear (T-shirt, shorts, hat, underwear, thongs), something to use at school (small packs of colour-in pencils or felt-tips, rubbers, note-books), something special (bag, sunglasses, stickers, craft kits), something to love (small cuddly soft toys, dolls, teddies), something to play with (small balls, puzzles, marbles, skipping ropes, cards or small storybooks), and something for personal hygiene (unopened toothbrushes, soaps, brushes, combs, hairbands, and face-washers). Each shoebox costs $9.00 to send, so the school is asking members of the community and local businesses to get behind the appeal and help them send as many of these shoeboxes as possible. Businesses might generously donate money to send a number of shoeboxes. Individuals might like to donate items, or perhaps a Christmas wrapped shoebox (lid and box covered separately so it may be opened for filling) with $9.00 enclosed to cover sending! All donations will be most gratefully received, both at Mooloolah State School office by Friday, October 19 (hurry!), and later in villages of PNG we are sure! For any inquiries please phone Fiona (schools RI coordinator) on 0411 306 838. Help Mooloolah State School make a difference to a child at Christmas.

The first duty of Pastor Coral Deeth, the Interim Minister at Glasshouse Country Uniting Church, was to bless a pile of shoe boxes which had been lovingly covered with Christmas wrapping paper and filled with something to wear, something to cuddle, some things for school, something special, something to play with and something hygienic. Under the leadership of Dianne Richardson, members of GHC Uniting Church have supported ‘Operation Christmas Child’ and Samaritan's Purse who will be shipping the shoe boxes to children in Papua New Guinea. The power of the children sharing and swapping their gifs around has gone a long way to building good relationships between groups.

You Said It Most frustrating

I read about the Council award for Place+ Beerwah with great annoyance. I got involved in this process and found it most frustrating. I don't believe the outcome for Beerwah will be any different than if the consultation had not taken place. Sure, residents were invited to meetings, but there was no feedback loop to the general population (like regular updates in this paper). So if you asked the vast majority of Beerwah residents about the proposed development of Beerwah they wouldn't be able to tell you anything. Most of the suggestions were so obvious, consultation was hardly needed (safer road crossings, reduced speeds, shade trees etc), but ‘out of the box’ suggestions were squashed. In particular, a building that was well place to be used as a community centre, was demolished without investigation being allowed. I don't think Beerwah residents, on the whole, will feel any ownership of the changes that are about to be done to us. I have to wonder how the award was made? Was it purely based on paperwork? The paperwork was fantastic. Did the judges come and talk to Beerwah residents on the street, or do a random phone survey? I doubt it. Frances Harper Peachester

Too many crashes

We see car crashes way too frequently in this area. Often when accidents happen we ask, what can we do about it? Particularly when younger members of the community are injured, or worse, when they lose their lives. I recently went to an adult driver training course by Roadcraft (in Gympie), and I’d definitely give them a 10/10. I’ve driven for over 10 years, and I couldn’t believe there was so much that I didn’t know.

Conditions

For example, did you know that 90 per cent of crashes could be prevented if the driver had just one extra second to react to the situation? Sounds hard to believe, but at 80km per hour a car travels 22 metres per second and with an extra 22 metres of space to work with, most drivers can take action to avoid an accident. So how do you get an extra second? It’s covered in the course: •Learn how to use your peripheral vision to enhance observation skills. •Adjust your driving technique to maximise safety. The course is run by a trainer who has experience racing and is a professional driver, it’s interesting and it's fun! Why not buy this course as a gift for one of your loved ones ... 18th birthday / Christmas present maybe? It could make all the difference. Website: www.roadcraft.net.au Name supplied Glass House Mountains

Pain and misery

It is encouraging that Heather Field speaks out against animal cruelty; unfortunately supporting rodeos equates to supporting immense pain and misery. Please don’t be blinded by fuzzy stories of kindness in any business or industry that profits from animals. We cannot profess to be animal lovers whilst consuming them and partaking in activities that involves them. We monitor and document injuries and deaths at Qld rodeos and the evidence is sickening. Australia Rodeo Cruelty lets you see firsthand how much fun these poor animals are having. Show love for all animals and live vegan. Jaylene Musgrave Vegan Warriors

Animals continue to suffer

Pastoralists and Graziers Association President Rob Gillam wants ‘the everyday man’ to know more about the live export industry. If so, he should explain how millions of animals are jampacked onto ships and sent across the equator to Asia or the Middle East, often in sweltering temperatures. The ships are so crowded that many animals die from disease or when they can’t reach food or water. Animals who survive this grueling journey may be tied by all four legs and shoved into car boots or the backs of trucks. At the slaughterhouse (sometimes just a hut), they often have their throats slit while they're still conscious. If Australia supposedly has such high animal welfare standards, then why are we still shipping live animals overseas to slaughter? Gillam can’t justify such cruelty by saying that Australians profit from it any more than he could justify abuses such as drug trafficking, sweatshops, or kiddie porn by reminding us that people make money from those activities. Animals will continue to suffer as long as live export remains legal. Des Bellamy PETA Australia

Watch out for a big electricity bill

Locals who have their electricity account with Origin Energy may find that they didn’t receive an account at the last billing cycle. My understanding is that it had something to do with the introduction of the carbon tax. To make sure I won’t be landed with a huge bill next time I have got myself an Origin EsiPay Electricity Payment card which means I can make regular payments at the post office until I receive the next bill. To get a card all you need to do is ring the Origin Enquiries number 13 24 62. Mark Scott Glass House Mountains

Family Fun Day a Hit Crowds flocked for a vibrant day of fun at the Mooloolah Family Fun Day, held last Sunday at the Mooloolah Community Centre. The event was jam packed with market stalls, rides, food, kid’s entertainment, games, live music, council plant giveaways and second hand wares. Kids had a ball with the free rides all day, including two big jumping castles, a giant slide, teacup ride, rock wall, animal farm and pony rides. Colourful faces filled the area with the face and body painters. Tummies were satisfied with real coffee, smoothies, homemade cakes, fairy floss, hot lunches and popcorn.

All were entertained with performers ranging from Sparkles the clown, Scouts, African Drumming workshops, Mooloolah Community Centre Op Shop Fashion Parade, Mooloolah and Glenview State Schools and local musicians, Pete Foerster, Ben Van Noordenan and Rose Palmer. The Mooloolah Community Centre would like to particularly thank Whites IGA, Sunshine Coast Council and event coordinators Renee Grant and Sonia Clark for their generous support.

Change is always going to happen Often we like change when we are young because change is a sign that we are ‘growing up’. Boy do things change as we get older! It seems the older we get, the more difficult it is to accept change. Change can make us feel anxious or uncomfortable, but if we are open to God in our lives, change can not only be managed but even welcomed! The world around us changes every day, but God never changes (Malachi 3:6). No matter what we go through, God’s love for us is the one supreme and absolute sure thing in our lives. He is interested in every part of our lives, GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

He longs to make Himself known to us but He is a gentleman…He will not intrude; instead He waits for our invitation. The Bible says He is willing and able to provide us with every blessing (2 Corinthians 9:8)... all we need to do is ask for it through prayer. And prayer is an opportunity for us to invite God to become involved in our lives. Changes in life are always going to happen; it is part of being human! But how awesome is it to know that in a world of constant change, we have a faithful; unchanging and constant friend in Jesus! And that is the one thing that will never, ever change!

Women take on Last Frontier Has Fifty Shades got you hot? Time for regular breast checks Tour escort Judy Polkinghorne and her womenonly ‘Girls On Tour’ group will journey to the Great White Continent, Antarctica, in February 2014 as part of their ‘Antarctica and Galapagos Last Frontier’ tour. For many ladies, visiting the place that is the highest, driest, windiest, emptiest and coldest place on earth is high on their ‘bucket list’. Girls On Tour travellers will explore destinations that have inspired bold explorers for centuries on-board the polar expedition cruise ship, MS Expedition. Beginning with a 400 mile crossing of the Drake Passage named after the 16th century English explorer, Sir Francis Drake and continuing on to the South Shetland Islands, through the Bransfield Strait and on to the Antarctic Pensinsula, this, combined with a five day Galapagos Islands wildlife adventure will be a trip of a lifetime. Based on the Sunshine Coast, this women-only travel operator has been taking ladies to all points of the globe now since 2006 and boasts a return business rate of 17 per cent with 47 per cent of return customers doing three or more women-only small group tours with Girls on Tour. For more information about Girls on Tour, contact Judy Polkinghorne by phone on 0409 057 417; email info@girlsontour.com.au or visit the website www.girlsontour.com.au to check out past tours or the upcoming tours calendar.

Judging by the 1.28 million copies that have found their way across the country – on bedside tables, in handbags, by the pool and on the train – the Fifty Shades Trilogy is obviously making a lot of Australian women feel rather hot and bothered. So, to help them deal with ‘the heat’, leading women’s health organisation Jean Hailes for Women’s Health has gathered some of Australia’s leading experts to take part in a free online webcast called ‘Fifty Shades of Midlife – Menopause, Mood & More’ to give Australian women the opportunity to find out what they need to know at this important stage of their life. “I’ll be challenging the idea that this is a time when women inevitably go off sex and start to turn into little old ladies,” says speaker Maureen Matthews, sex educator and columnist. “It’s not that women lose libido, they are just slower to get aroused. That doesn’t mean the minute you go through menopause you stop becoming a sexual person,” Maureen says. “But women have to take responsibility for keeping pleasure and sex on the agenda – perhaps by reading erotica.” “I think that’s why women have engaged with the Fifty Shades trilogy. It’s a safe way to dabble in something a little dangerous – and some women are finding that arousing.” The webcast takes place online on Wednesday, October 31, and is free to attend go to www. jeanhailes.org.au for information about the event.

Cancer Council Queensland is encouraging the state’s women to prioritise regular breast screenings, to increase the rate of women accessing free screening through BreastScreen Queensland. The call follows the release of new figures that show only 55 per cent of Australian women in the target age range for screening are attending free mammograms every two years. “All Queensland women need to be ‘breast aware’, and discuss their risk factors and screening options with their GP,” Dr Youl said. “Equally importantly, women should see a doctor immediately if they notice unusual breast changes. “If breast cancer is found and treated early, there is an increased chance of survival. Dr Youl urged women to look out for changes in breast shape, feel, size or colour of the breast, unusual breast pain and persistent lumps or thickening. “It’s important that women are familiar with how their breasts look and feel, attend regular screenings and consult their GP if anything changes.” More information about the rates of breast cancer in Queensland, risk factors, and Cancer Council Queensland recommendations for the early detection of breast cancer, are available at www.cancerqld.org.au.

Can Headaches be Caused by Spinal Subluxation even if you don't have pain in your spine?

I consistently have tight shoulders in the muscles that connect to my neck. Stress seems to be making the situation worse and I’ve started having headaches.

Absolutely. Many people associate major trauma such as a car accident as the cause of spine problems. However, the vast majority of spinal subluxations are caused by smaller repetitive stresses, such as poor posture, an improper pillow, etc. Because there was no major trauma, these problems often sneak up on you as the years go by. Some of the subtle hints of spinal subluxation are tight muscles, decreased flexibility, low energy, and minor aches and pains that seem to resolve on their own. While the symptoms come and go, the CAUSE remains until it is corrected. Over time, as the subluxation causes advanced degeneration or ‘arthritis’ in the spine, the neck pain will become more and more noticeable. Call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today to find out if your headaches are caused by Spinal Subluxation.

There are many causes of tightness in the shoulders including typing, driving, parenting and activities where the hands are held above the head. Shoulder tightness is often aggravated by stress and shoulder tightness is a source of stress for many people – a challenging cycle. Left untreated, shoulder tightness often ‘radiates’ up the back of the neck to become tension headaches. Acupuncture and acupressure is a great way to break this cycle. Treatment focuses on relaxing the muscles of the shoulders and neck where the ‘ropey’ muscles of the neck attach to the back of the head. General stress can also be relieved. Shoulder tightness is a condition that many people try to ‘grin and bear but with a sequence of treatments the issue can often be significantly improved.

Have you had a clicky jaw, difficulty in opening wide, trouble with grinding your teeth or clenching? Then you may have a TMJ disorder. You may also experience pain or tenderness in the jaw joint, temples, ears, side of your neck or upper shoulders, as well as headaches behind or around the eyes. The jaw joint or TMJ is formed by the junction of the jaw bone (mandible) and your head (cranium). The joint is then divided by a disc. Stress is another major contributing factor and it is important to understand and avoid stress-related behaviours. You can modify these often subconscious behaviours to prevent or modify jaw pain. Examples of these behaviours are: clenching your teeth, bruxing (nocturnal grinding of teeth), excessive gum chewing, nail biting and pen chewing. I have undergone specialised training in TMJ dysfunction and can diagnose the cause of your jaw symptoms and establish an appropriate treatment plan to resolve the symptoms.

Tourism Talks

with Jayne Wilson

Senior Tourism Consultant Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre

For the keen photographer finding subjects in the garden or other local areas has a distinct advantage. It is possible to find the time of the day with optimal lighting conditions. This might occur during the 'Golden Hour', that wondrous time after sunrise or before sunset. Other times during the day changes in the position of the sun give rise to suitable lighting on the subjects in the garden. There is plenty of time for the observant photographer to move around and find the best location and conditions for taking the picture. Using a reflector to lighten an area in deep shade will almost certainly enhance the photograph. This Solandra though not a creeper was growing over a dead Poinciana tree with its thick stems covered in large flowers and cascading down like an umbrella. The position and number of flowers changed continually over the flowering period. This close-up is one of my favourites! Camera: Canon 7D, Picture: Raw, Lens: 50 mm, Mode: manual

Tuesday, September 25 saw Volunteers from the Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre along with approximately another 100 volunteers and staff from across the Sunshine Coast attended a Trade display held at the Kawana Community Centre. This Trade display was arranged by Sunshine Coast Destinations for staff and volunteers working within one of nine Sunshine Coast Visitor Information Centres. The feedback from volunteers and staff has been wonderful and the event was well received by staff, volunteers and operators. School holidays have now finished and all kids are back at school – phew say some parents. Volunteers and staff had a wonderful two weeks assisting visitors with tours, accommodation, walks and things to do in the Hinterland area. School visits – we have had the Victoria Point High School and Kedron State High School visit the centre in the past two months. These school groups visit on a regular basis throughout the year, learning about the Glasshouse Mountains and spending some time in the local area. Visitors calling in or looking for something to do on the weekend, why not call into the visitor centre? You can speak with the staff and volunteers who can help out with tours and walks. Book your tickets while you’re here to avoid lengthy queues and also take advantage of the bonus discount coupons. The centre is open seven days a week from 9.00am to 5.00pm excluding Good Friday and Christmas Day. We are seeking volunteers with local knowledge and a friendly outlook to assist in our Visitor Information staff. There is a variety of shifts to be filled. To volunteer your time, share your skills and make new friends or simply to find out more email jayne@scdl.com.au

Recycle your aluminum cans

Contributed by Bob Banner Did you know Australians consume the contents of more than three billion aluminum cans annually? Of these approximately 47 per cent are soft drinks and 53 per cent are alcoholic beverages. Currently more than two billion cans are recycled each year, leaving one billion to end up as landfill. It makes good environmental sense to recycle aluminum Aluminium can collecting at Beerwah cans because there is no waste, one tone of recycled cans will make one tone of new aluminum. It also takes much less energy to recycle aluminum than producing it new; 20 cans can be recycled for the same energy that’s required to produce one new can. Conversely, the one billion cans finding their way into landfill will take up to five hundred years to decompose. Glasshouse Country residents can make a positive contribution to the environment, just by taking their used aluminum cans to the Beerwah Lions Club collection point, in Simpson Street opposite the Paint Place, on the first Saturday of each month from 8.30am to 11.00am. The Lions will even pay you 50 cents a kilo for the cans you bring in. So kids there you go, round up all your empty cans and earn some extra pocket money for Christmas. 18 |

Favourite Sunshine Coast Places with Cr Rick Baberowski

Stanley River Park is a small park and the perfect reminder of why we live in Glasshouse Country. It’s incredible that you can be on the busy Kilcoy - Beerwah Road / Peachester Road (so good they named it twice) one minute and then in a quiet oasis the next. It’s a beautiful natural watercourse and one that I particularly enjoy as the riverbank displays of nature are a real inspiration for my amateur photographer instincts.

For those who enjoy a cool short stroll through nature or a nice quiet spot to sit at a picnic table and have a cuppa or a picnic lunch, this spot is definitely worth a look. And for those who would like to learn to recognise our local plant-life, you will be impressed by all the name plaques at the foot of many of the trees and shrubs. A great place to remember when the summer heat hits.

If you would like to share your favourite secret spot with other Glasshouse Country locals then let me know where it is - email rick. baberowski@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au www.gcnews.com.au

Glamour in Glasshouse

By Lea Parkes We might be a long way from Melbourne this Melbourne Cup – but that doesn’t mean we won’t have plenty of style and glamour at our local Melbourne Cup events. Our GCNews team will be out and about on the day - with our cameras capturing just how lovely our local ladies outfits are, and from past experience there has been some absolutely gorgeous looks. Just in case you haven’t already been busy working out your outfits, I have been doing plenty of research to make sure you know the latest hot tips for what’s hot for this race season’s fashion. Whether you are travelling to Melbourne for the day, or Corbould Park, or at one of the local lunches, you can expect to see colour blocking; this can involve wearing a single dramatic colour for your entire outfit or working two contrasting colours together. If you are a ‘lover of white’ you can even go with all white clothes and then contrast with bright accessories, shoes and handbags. Another popular trend will also be vintage style dressing, which can incorporate the current floral trend, as well as lace and feather trims / accessories. Hats will be smaller and more discreet, rather than the dramatic wide brims seen in some years. Listening to the fashion experts, it is safe to say that creating glamour is all about the detail, a gorgeous frock still needs to be part of a coordinated outfit. Conscious choices about accessories, in particular shoes and handbags are critical and under no circumstance can you just grab your everyday handbag as you run out the door. One other tip that probably shouldn’t be limited to Melbourne Cup but whenever you want to create that wow factor is making sure everything fits – it is great for your dress to be almost figure hugging without being tight. So armed with this knowledge – I feel so much more prepared for shopping for the big day... you will recognise me, I will be the one with small hat, colour blocked vintage floral dress with matching lace handbag and shoes!

DONATIONS / GIFTS AND SPONSORSHIP DEDUCTIONS

Do you realise that your purchase of tickets in Boystown, Mater Prize or the notebook and pen set from the Guide Dogs is not a tax deduction. You can only make tax deductible gifts or donations to organisations that are registered as Deductible Gift Recipients (DGR). A donation must be $2.00 or more to claim the deduction. If you are donating an item as a gift it must have been purchased within the previous 12 months. The gift or donation is not deductible if you receive something in return such as:• Purchase of Raffle or Art Union Tickets 22

|

|

OCTOBER 17 2012

• Purchase of items eg: Towels, Hats, T-Shirts • Purchase of Chocolates, Pens and other similar items are deemed not deductible, it has to be a true gift. You need to keep receipts of all deductible gifts/donations you make to help you prepare your tax return and as evidence for your claim. If you have donated property, you need to keep records of: • the date you acquired the property • the amount you paid for the property, if applicable • any valuations. Sponsorship expenses may be deductible if they are incurred in

obtaining your assessable income or to promote your business. These are not classed as donations as you are expecting to receive a service of sort in return. Sponsorships are more inclined to fall within Advertising rather than donations. Unfortunately ‘donations’ to your local sporting club or association are probably not deductible as they do not fall under the list of DGR and nor are they charities. When it comes to tax time check your donations before claiming to make sure they are eligible. Most if not all charities and DGR have the wording ‘Donations of $2.00 or more are Tax Deductible’.

Things the banks won’t tell you

Learning to successfully navigate the property loan application process is essential for property investors and first home buyers alike. But as Kevin Young President of property advisory group, The Investors Club says, “banks won’t tell you how.” “While banks are quick to let you know when you don’t qualify for a loan or can’t borrow what you want, when it comes to providing guidance on improving your borrowing capacity, they often don’t tell you how. But with the right advice you can increase your capacity to borrow both immediately and over time,” Kevin said. Credit Cards: For every $10,000 credit card limit, you decrease your borrowing capacity by approximately $40,000. If you have multiple cards, either consider consolidating or cancelling as many as you can. You can also reduce the limits on each card. This is important as banks consider your total credit limit as a liability, not the amount you have spent. Loans: Recurring debts, including interest-free loans, reduce your ability to service your mortgage account. The effect of just $100.00 as any recurring monthly loan repayment for any type of loan – personal, car or store – is around $15,000 in lost borrowing capacity. Rent: If you’re a property investor and rent, you need to be aware that if your name is on a lease, the bank considers the whole lease amount as a liability in your loan application, irrespective of your share. If, however, you can enter into a boarding agreement, leaving your name off the lease, you increase your borrowing capacity. For example, replacing $300.00 per week in rent with $100.00 per week in board has the potential to increase your borrowing power by $150,000. Wages: If you’re in the right situation, ask the boss for a raise or increase your income via sales commissions. Even a modest increase in salary of $10,000 could increase your capacity to borrow by $90,000. Families: If you have children, your financial capacity to support them is factored into your loan application. As a general guideline, banks consider each dependent child to reduce borrowing power by around $60,000. Ongoing child care costs are also considered like any other recurring debt, with each $100.00 reducing your borrowing power by $15,000.

If These Walls Could Talk

Built in the roaring Forties this character filled Queenslander has secrets in its history which only can be revealed on inspection of the property. Partially restored to its former glory, the owners have completed the kitchen to chefs standards with stone bench tops and two ovens and two cook tops. Extra high ceilings throughout the home have ornate cornices and ceiling roses which add to the charm. Separate dining room, and master bedroom with air conditioning, both have French doors opening to the large covered deck area that encompasses three quarters of the home. The open lounge room has a wood fire burner and air conditioning with a storage room and office off the hallway to the large laundry. Another hallway leads to the other three bedrooms and bathroom. Outside, a double carport is available and an American style three bay shed with three phase power for a work shop or extra storage. Located on a 2007sqm block, at the end of a quiet cul de sac with a bush back drop from the spacious back yard is this unique property. Located within a five minute drive to shops, schools and rail, within an hours drive to Brisbane this is a golden opportunity to own your own Queenslander.

Congratulations to Peachester and Beerburrum State Schools on their successful application to the Queensland Government’s school waste minimisation project. As part of this project, the schools will be supplied with waste minimisation and recycling equipment such as colour coded wheelie bins, classroom recycling bins, stickers, posters and awareness raising materials. The schools will also be entitled to a $200.00 rebate from the Queensland Government to introduce an onsite composter or worm farm to recover their food scraps and grass clippings. I applaud the proactive approach shown by all involved with these two excellent schools in helping our kids look after their environment for the future. In order to keep informed on the issues of concern to our community, I have been walking the streets of the business districts in the Glass House electorate to meet and talk with business owners and community members. Most recently I have walked through the townships of Glass House Mountains and Woodford with Wamuran and Montville on the agenda before the end of the year. Many of the businesses I visited were very willing to communicate with me and pass on some of their feedback. These street walks will become a fixture on my calendar for 2013 so if you are a local business and want me to drop in next year call the office and we will make sure this happens – 5435 2013. As part of my commitment to keeping in touch with the community, I also recently held a small morning tea catch-up with members of the Glasshouse Mountains community. The informal gathering was held at the Glasshouse Mountains Tavern and attendees had the opportunity to discuss with me some of the matters that concern them in our community. These catch-ups will also become a regular event in 2013 and I will post more details on how you can join in the discussions early next year.

The Newman Government recently announced its ‘Get in the Game’ policy, which is aimed at increasing participation in sport, particularly among young Queenslanders. You should notice information pamphlets in your local clubs and sporting organisations, however I’d like to share some information here to ensure people take advantage of this great initiative. There are three funding sections of ‘Get in the Game’. Get Started will see 40,000 vouchers of up to $150.00 to assist children in joining a sport or recreation club. Get Going allows clubs to apply for $10,000 in grants aimed at lifting participation in sport through the promotion of their activities and the purchase of equipment and materials. Get Playing enables clubs to apply for grants of up to $100,000 to ensure new facility developments and upgrades, with a strong focus on increasing participation in sport and recreation activities. ‘Get in the Game’ is a three-year $18 million program to provide better sport activities and facilities at the grassroots level and give children who might not otherwise be able to afford it, the chance to get involved in sport. This can do wonders for their self-esteem and overall health and I encourage all parents and local clubs to get out there and ‘Get in the Game’. For more information, including to find out key cut-off dates for applications, Phone 1300 656 191 or visit www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/ getinthegame

Feedback on hinterland towns

In my last column I called for feedback on the future of hinterland towns; do we want to keep our individual character or try and keep up with development in our beach-side counterparts? Thank you to those who have taken the time to let me know their thoughts. I will take all of these onboard and be sure to ask people their thoughts when I hold my Mark in the Park days in the future. www.gcnews.com.au

Blood, Sweat & Cheers Glasshouse Country Bowls Club Contributed by Dennis Hume Sunday, October 7 - One game of the Men’s B Grade singles was played. Max Viterale def Phil Siggers 26 to 23. Wednesday, October 10 - Ladies Jackpot Day. Winners were those with lowest winning score. They were Margaret Lehmann, Chris Freshwater, and Gary Lehmann. Runners up were Di Hunt, Dennis Hume, and Jack Timm. Winners out of the hat were Margaret Beasley, Kevin Beasley, and Richard Kossen. The jackpot did not go off, so accrues for next month. Thursday, October 11 - Open Pairs Bowls. AM game winners were Bray Howard, and Trevor Bertram 2 + 52. Runners up were Anne Howard, and Tony Verdonck + 12 in the second game. PM game was rained out. The week ended with our fantastic two day Spring Carnival on Saturday and Sunday, October 13 and 14. With teams from Glasshouse, Bongaree, Donnybrook, Palmwoods, Banyo, Darra, Geebung, Toombul and Hamilton, 56 players

had to play five games of 15 ends over the two days. The weekend, sponsored by Live Life Villages Maleny, was played in a sportsman like atmosphere, ensuring a great weekend was had by all. The 14 teams of four were mixed. Winners overall were the team of Jan Lawson, Jack Timm, Brian Fogarty, and John McSwain (Rhyllis Aitken subbed for Jan who withdrew hurt on the Sunday). Second were a team from Caloundra, Brian Goodwin, Chris Goodwin, Tony Verdonck, and Edna Verdonck. Third were Stewart Wilson, Joan Wilson, Bobby Moss, and Noel Feruglio. Fourth were Gary Lehmann, Margaret Lehmann, Anne Howard, and Bray Howard. The lucky draw winners were Bill Tumbridge, Ann White, Troy German, and Nev Franklin. The weather turned on its best, much to every ones enjoyment. A great vote of thanks goes to the management, lead by Sharon Bochow, and staff of Club Glass House for the way they looked after the bowlers over the weekend. Also to Terry Little our greenkeeper for a great green on which to play, and to Jim Tatum for his role of Games Director and Umpire for the weekend.

Bromeliad Beauty

F

The flowering bromeliads in the garden at this time of the year are quite varied. The Vriesea genus are mainly epiphytes and occur in moist, shaded conditions in nature. Vrieseas have a ‘tank’ formed by their central leaves, which stores water that helps the plant to meet their moisture requirements. Vrieseas grown for their flowers rather than their foliage are categorised as green-leaved Vrieseas, and are best grown in 115 to 140 mm pots. Those grown primarily for their attractively marked leaves are described as foliage Vriesea, and are best grown in Vriesea firecracker 140 to 200 mm containers. Good drainage is essential, so an open mixture which drains freely and dries out quickly is needed. Avoid any materials that decomposes quickly; this can affect good drainage and thereby damage delicate root growth. The flower spike has green, yellow, or white flowers, with brilliantly coloured bracts of green, purple, red, or yellow and retain their colour for many months. One of the biggest mistakes for novice growers is to collect plants from all sorts of places without a name tag. As you become more addicted to collecting bromeliads and you need to know the name of the species, this is when the detective work can really start. This can be a challenge as we have found with the plant in the photo. The closest plant we can find to this is Vriesea firecracker. The spike has been out for about four weeks and the flowers have started to open, the display will be in full bloom in about another two weeks and will be on display until well after Christmas.

The Glasshouse Country Bromeliad Society Inc will meet on November 4, 2.00pm at the Mary MacKillop Centre, 160 Peachester Road Beerwah. Please bring your own cup for afternoon tea. To find out more contact Pat Pennell on 5438 7375.

Polyscias nodosa If you are looking for a fast growing tropical small tree with stunning palm like foliage look no further than Noah’s Basswood. This beautiful small tree grows to around 5 metres in SE QLD and is often multi-trunked. Its large palm like foliage complements a tropical rainforest garden and its fragrant cream flowers are followed by reddish black bird-attracting fruit. It prefers a moist, well drained site and grows best in full sun to semi shade. In the wild it is found in rainforest from Iron Range in Far North Queensland down to the Conway Range south of Proserpine. You only have to go as far as our nursery grounds though if you want to see some lovely four year old specimens that are currently in full flower. If you would like more information on this tree or any other native plants drop in and see Simon or Melissa at Go Green Rainforest Nursery, 2620 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview. Phone 5494 5980. Quickly, realising my husband would probably wake up, I cuckooed another nine times. I was really proud of myself for coming up with such a quick-witted solution, in order to escape a possible conflict with him. (Even when totally smashed... three cuckoos plus nine cuckoos

Then he said “we need a new cuckoo clock.” When I asked him why, he said, “well, last night our clock cuckooed three times, then said ‘bugger.’ Cuckooed four more times, cleared its throat, cuckooed another three times, giggled, cuckooed twice more, and then tripped over the coffee table and broke wind.
