Hi Everyone Each Anzac Day the residents of Glasshouse Country get actively involved in the many activities throughout the day. This year for the first time Glasshouse Country RSL will be holding a special cross dedication at 1.00pm. This will give locals the opportunity to lay a cross on the Cenotaph at the front of Glass House Country RSL Hall (facing Reed Street) in remembrance of deceased Service person/s. The Service person’s name can be written on the front and a message on the back, either in black biro or marking pen. A poppy is featured on the front of cross, and is an emblem of sacrifice, the symbol of a life given in the service of one’s country; it is a link between departed comrades and those who remain.

Crosses are available for purchase at the RSL for $5.00 each on the day or phone 5438 7777 (office answering machine). This service has been requested by the club’s members who have seen it done elsewhere, and I am sure that many locals will appreciate the opportunity to recognise their loved ones sacrifice with this moving symbolic gesture. Chaplain Mike Turner works five days per week at the school (as well as weekend camping trips, etc) and that is a lot of donations to find for wages and expenses for the year. Every April the Local Chaplaincy Committee is at crisis point financially. It has been running at a deficit of around $3,000 per month since December. Sometimes our regular sponsors are not able to continue their support, and this is the case at present, with a major sponsor being unable to continue as in previous years. Imagine the excitement and relief to see a $3,000 donation in the March financial figures from an anonymous donor! We are extremely grateful and wish to thank this wonderful anonymous donor via Glasshouse Country News and any other anonymous or named donors who wish to support the work of Chaplaincy at Beerwah State High School where the goal is to bring hope to a young generation.

For nearly 20 years Chaplains have been serving Beerwah State High School without any Government funding assistance whatsoever. We are grateful that the local Glasshouse Country community, businesses, service clubs, individuals and churches have donated generously to keep a Chaplain at the school.

Fullerton family member receives Honorary Doctorate

A former Glasshouse Mountains resident, who is recognised internationally for her contribution to the digitisation of Australian libraries, has received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of the Sunshine Coast. Recently retired Director-General of the National Library of Australia, Dr Janice Fullerton of Canberra received the prestigious award at USC’s Graduation Ceremony last week. “It is absolutely lovely to be honoured by a University which didn’t exist when I was a local but that is a part of the world I USC Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill with come from,” she said. Dr Janice Fullerton Janice attended Beerwah State School and Nambour State High School, and her family’s pineapple and macadamia farms are still in operation in the local area. Dr Fullerton’s exemplary 43-year public service career began as a trainee librarian for the National Library of Australia in 1967. She was promoted to Director-General in 1999 and remained in that position until her retirement in 2010. “There was virtually no automation when I started and by the time I ended my career, libraries were totally based on using technologies,” Dr Fullerton said. “Digitisation enables libraries to do better and easier what they’ve always tried to do, which is to meet the needs of their readers.” Dr Fullerton was awarded an Order of Australia in 2005 and recently received the HCL Anderson Award from the Australian Library and Information Association. USC’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill said Dr Fullerton was highly regarded in her industry and deserved recognition for her leadership and innovation. “Dr Fullerton’s outstanding efforts ensured the National Library of Australia achieved an increased visibility of collections, and the enabling of free access to the national catalogue through Australia’s web archive Pandora,” he said. “She initiated the Australian Newspaper Digitisation Project and the creation of the Trove search service which provides easy online access to the content of thousands of Australian collections. “This Honorary Award recognises her strong links to the Sunshine Coast region where she grew up on a pineapple farm near the Glasshouse Mountains.”

Share a walk down memory lane

Sunshine Coast Council needs your help to create a work of art based around these wonderful memories. The 'Memory Lane' installation will feature a paste up of contributed mementos along the Village Laneway in the Caloundra CBD. Council’s Creative Communities Manager, Christine Ballinger, said the temporary art installation is a fun and interactive way for the community to celebrate and contribute to the streetscape upgrade of Bulcock Street and the Caloundra CBD. “The purpose of public art is to bring art into everyday life, to energise public spaces and to stimulate thought,” Ms Ballinger said. “The Memory Lane project is a fun way to share the history and memories of great times, while also involving the wider community in the reinvigoration of the Caloundra CBD.” Council invites you to recall your fondest memories of special times spent in Caloundra—holiday activities, camping, fishing trips, a great surfing weekend or maybe something completely different—and send copies of photos, postcards, posters, film or other memorabilia to help create a real walk down memory lane. Community focus groups have completed the challenging task of turning the bright ideas of Beerwah's residents into a draft Action Plan. The focus groups have handed over their actions and priorities to council which will now review the documents for achievability before taking a draft Final Action Plan back to the community. Once that has been approved, the draft Final Beerwah Action Plan will be taken to council to be endorsed. Council started comprehensive community engagement with the town last year to help develop an even brighter future in Beerwah. Mt Mellum musician awarded scholarship “She knows what her career is to be and has set about achieving it in a diverse and practical way.” Jessie said the scholarship will help her purchase a steel string acoustic electric guitar and an amplifier. This equipment is essential to her and will help develop and conduct herself as an emerging artist and professional musician. She began her Bachelor of Popular Music at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University in 2011, however her interest and experience in music started when she was just nine years of age. For the past four years Jessie has also been performing her own music at various venues across South East Queensland.

Jessie Ryan-Allen of Mount Mellum has been awarded The Events Centre Scholarship for the Performing Arts to commend her outstanding dedication to music. The Scholarship will provide Jessie with a cheque for $2,500.00 to help ease the financial burden of final year study. This is the fifth year the scholarship has been awarded. Jessie was selected to receive the scholarship by a panel of judges. Joan Benson OAM, Cultural Ambassador of The Events Centre and one of the judges on the panel, said Jessie has a mature approach to study, her fellow musicians, future work and the community.

As National Youth Week draws to a close, the countdown has begun in earnest for young people across Glass House as they gear up to celebrate ‘Local Young Live’, a live music event that is set to rock the Beerwah Community Hall this Friday, from 4.00pm. With headline act 'The Lady Throat Killers' announced just prior to Easter, the event promises to be a sell-out, with only 300 tickets available at the door on the night.

Warm reception for price freeze on water

Unitywater has put price hikes on ice, announcing a freeze on its water and sewerage fees and charges for the next financial year. The Board’s decision to keep prices at current levels for another 12 months is expected to provide welcome relief for local households under pressure from the rising cost of living. CEO Jon Black said it was the direct result of ongoing efforts to slash costs and identify savings, and highlighted the benefits of providing water and sewerage services across a larger customer base. “We’ve been able to deliver a price freeze just two years after commencing operations due to a concerted effort to keep costs down and realising the benefits of increased economies of scale,” Mr Black said. “We’ve listened to our customers and have been looking at every aspect of our operations and every program we have in place to see where savings can be made. He said the freeze would apply to all Unitywater prices, with the exception of trade waste, recycled water and a small number of miscellaneous fees and charges. It doesn’t apply to the State Government’s bulk water charges which are not controlled by Unitywater. He reassured customers they won't be slugged with big increases in 12 months’ time. “Our aim has always been, and will continue to be, to keep prices as low as possible,” Mr Black said.

Nominate a sustainability champion for the 2012 Glossy awards

Sunshine Coast Council is calling on the community to nominate sustainability champions for the 2012 Living Smart Glossies Awards, to be held on Friday, June 15. The Glossies, named after the endangered glossy black cockatoo, recognise exceptional sustainability achievements in building design, construction, transport, resource management, greening the arts, and edible gardening. New this year is the Affordable Living Award, which is open to developers and builders who have delivered a residential project which has contributed to housing choice and a sustainable and affordable living experience for the home’s inhabitants. Council’s Climate Change and Environment Initiatives Coordinator, Sally Wright, said the Glossies acknowledged businesses, community organisations and individuals who have made smarter choices in how they live and contribute to the future of our region. She said one easy and effective way to be more sustainable is to plant an edible landscape – a garden that feeds the family in a healthy way, saves money, and helps the environment, and residents are encouraged to enter the 2012 Edible Landscape Award category and reap the benefits of gardening. While residents, organisations and businesses can self-nominate for the awards, the Hall of Fame recipient will be selected by a specialist assessor panel. Established last year, the Hall of Fame Award recognises a wellknown Sunshine Coast identity or business that has achieved sustainable outcomes over a significant period of time. Help Council help your four legged friends Did you know you can retrieve your dog or cat for free from Sunshine Coast Council’s pounds the first time it is impounded, provided it is registered? By law you must register your pet and council provides this incentive to ensure your pet’s registration is renewed in September each year. Community Services Manager, Sheryl Krome said council was committed to reuniting pets with their owners and encouraging responsible pet ownership. She said owners must be in control of their dog or cat at all times, which is why council has a $300.00 impound release fee to emphasise the significance of being a responsible pet owner and to provide an incentive to stop it happening again.” Ms Krome said the $300.00 impound fee would be waived for first time offenders whose registered cat or dog was impounded. She said animal registration provides safety and security for dogs and cats as well as owners and the community. All dogs and cats must be registered every year and wear a council-issued registration tag when in public to assist council to reunite dogs and cats with their owners should they become separated. Reduced registration fees apply for desexed and microchipped dogs and cats. Also remember to ensure your pet’s microchip details are up-to-date with your microchip register to help council, the vet or lost animal shelter to reunite you quickly and easily. If your pet goes missing and your microchip details are not up-to-date and you do not know which database the chip is registered to, visit council’s website for some simple tips about how to resolve this quickly.

From the Schools Beerwah State High’s Independent Learning Centre open for business Contributed by Tanya Hayden, deputy principal senior school Beerwah State High School is proud to announce that a major project, a joint initiative between the Beerwah SHS P&C and Education Queensland has finally come to fruition. Several years ago the school investigated the concept of having a dedicated space that catered for the needs of senior students who wished to take up flexible learning options and work opportunities that could see them missing a day of school each week. In 2009 agreement was reached as to where that space would be situated and Sharon Vonhoff, then President of the Beerwah SHS P&C committed major funds from the P&C that meant the project could go ahead. Throughout 2010 and 2011, under the direction of P&C President Cathy Cope, with assistance from senior Schooling HOD Liza Bingham and Beerwah State High School’s Industry Liaison Officer Cindy Reader what once seemed like ‘wishful thinking’ soon became a reality. The Independent Learning Centre opened its doors to the first senior students in term 3, 2011 and was officially opened by Mr Graham Trevenen, school Principal, on Thursday, March 29. Over 100 senior students who are involved in school based apprenticeships and traineeships or studying certificate courses at TAFE or other

educational facilities regularly make use of this centre two or three lessons a week as a place to study and catch up on school work and assessments. Cindy Reader is on hand to assist students with resume writing, searching for jobs and other courses and contacting employers to arrange work placements and facilitates other future work and career opportunities. It is fully equipped with computers, laptops and wireless internet access and is packed with resources and up-to-date information about careers, job prospects and industry news and is a meeting place for outside industry partners to liaise with the school and students. Guidance Officer, Paul Gordon is also readily available to assist students when they are making decisions about future courses and career pathways. The Independent Learning Centre has already expanded from its initial purpose and now also caters for students who are studying courses via virtual schooling and School of Distance Education with a fully equipped sound proof computer lab solely for their use. School staff and students thank past and current Presidents Sharon Vonhoff and Cathy Cope and their executive teams for all of their hard work and dedication in contributing significantly to the construction of such a wonderful facility that supports the learning of so many students at Beerwah SHS.

Bushdance for Chappy a blast! Mooloolah State School's Farewell Bush Dance for Chappy Dave Larkin on Friday, March 23 was a wonderful success. A terrific crowd enjoyed dancing to the fantastic ‘Bushland Boogie’ Bush band. Chappy Dave had an amazing night and leaves Mooloolah State School with wonderful memories. His commitment and generosity to students, families and staff of the school over the last four years will not be forgotten. Everyone attending the Bush Dance was able to thank Chappy Dave personally and wish him well for his future endeavours. Chappy Dave received the ultimate surprise on the night, with a farewell gift of a Skydive Voucher with Sunshine Coast Skydivers. Dave said, "I will be very nervous but very excited to take the jump. It will be a once in a lifetime moment." Although the jump date is not yet set, Chappy Dave invited everyone to come and cheer him on when he lands on the beach. A week of work for GCCC students By Kaylee Utting, Year 10 Glasshouse Country Christian College work experience student For most high school students the last week of term was a blur of assignments and exams, but for Glasshouse Country Christian College’s Year 10 students, the last week has opened up many new opportunities and ideas. For my work experience, I spent a week at Glasshouse Country News because I love reading and writing. I was overwhelmed by the level of organisation and hard work that goes into each week’s newspaper. I was asked to do everything from sending emails and doing errands to interviewing one of my fellow Year 10 students, Isaac. Isaac Cornel has spent an amazing week at the Beerwah Veterinary Surgery. He enjoyed handling all the pets and his main highlight was helping perform a caesarean to deliver some cute puppies. The staff said he was a natural with animals and a hard worker too. But Isaac quickly learnt that if you really want to help the animals, you can’t love them too much or become emotionally attached, because in spite of everything, animals die or have to be put down.

Dr Ian Palmer of Beerwah Veterinary Surgery, Humphrey the cat and work experience students Isaac and Kaylee Before this week, Isaac wasn’t sure what he wanted to do after leaving school, but since he loves animals, he decided to give the vet surgery a go. Spending a week in the workplace has helped him make up his mind and his passion to help animals has increased tenfold. With work experience coming to an end, I’m sure many Year 10 students enjoyed their week just as much as Isaac and I.

A trip to Caloundra and an invigorating walk from Bulcock Beach to Kings Beach and back was enjoyed by 20 members and eight guests of Glasshouse Country View Club on Wednesday, April 4. This was followed by a fish and chips lunch (the real reason for the outing) sitting in the sun under the Norfolk pines on Bulcock Beach promenade. The next View Club meeting will be held on Wednesday, April 18 at the Glasshouse Sports

Club. This will be a ‘Back 2 School Day’ reminiscing about our school days in this country or overseas. Members are requested to bring a photo and any school memorabilia of those early days. Caloundra Family History Research Inc will hold its April general meeting on Thursday, April 19. Because it is close to the annual ANZAC Day Remembrance Services, the guest speaker will be our esteemed member, Ian Edwardson. Ian’s presentation will embrace a military theme. Caloundra Family History’s next big project will be the undertaking of another four week Beginners/Refresher Course. This will commence on Saturday, April 28, and continue for the following three Saturday afternoons, concluding on May 19. The course runs for approximately two and a half hours each Saturday afternoon and encompasses the following lessons - How to Begin, Record Keeping, Researching Overseas, and Researching in Australia. Cost for the complete course is only $30.00 and includes each participant being given a CD at the end of each lesson. Afternoon tea is also included. This is the third course the group has conducted and past experience has shown the course fills quickly. Ingredients

9 Egg yolks 1 Whole egg 20ml Extra virgin olive oil Salt 2 tbs Water 250g Italian flour 00 250g Durum wheat semolina

Preparation: Mix eggs, oil, water and salt, gradually add flour and semolina. Knead until it is an elastic dough, and wrap in glad wrap and let rest for min 1/2 hour. Cut dough into 5 pieces and flatten out with a rolling pin, then feed sheets through pasta machine until desired thickness. Repeat three times, finally feed through preferred cutter as fettuccini or linguini. Cook in boiling saltwater for 2 minutes, drain and add a little olive oil to avoid sticking. If used at a later stage cool down with cold water and then add olive oil.

Community Group Updates Beerwah Neighbourhood Watch Queensland

At the meeting of Beerwah NHWQ held on April 2, the ‘Good Neighbour Award’ was presented to Del Davis, who had been nominated by DonnaKay Donovan, the current President of Beerwah CWA. Donna wrote…. ‘Del has spent a lot of time in the community keeping the CWA going and organises volunteers for the Red Cross Blood Bank when it comes into the area’. Del has occupied many of the positions on the committee of the CWA and it is in no small part due to her efforts that Beerwah still has a branch of CWA, unlike many small country towns. Unfortunately, Donna was unable to be present. The photo (above right) shows Ron Stocks, the Area Co-ordinator of Beerwah NHWQ presenting the certificate to Del.

Vice president Joan Kropp welcomed members to the March meeting held in the Peachester Hall. After a short meeting, Rob Morris, Jeff Bodley and Coral Beutel entertained us with their experiences on their recent trip to Taiwan. Jeff spoke about the beautiful scenery. Taiwan is a very mountainous country, about half the size of Tasmania, and is home to 23 million people. Everywhere is clean and tidy and the local food was good. Coral mainly spoke about the parks and gardens with their stunning displays, and visiting markets. The orchids were outstanding and found in many hotels. She also touched on other interesting experiences they had on their trip. Results of the competition bench - first Joan Kropp, second Pam Innes. The next meeting will be on Thursday, April 19, 9.30am in the Peachester Hall. After the meeting we will be visiting an orchid nursery.

Seniors invited to 12th annual Sunshine Coast Seniors’ Forum Senior residents of the Sunshine Coast are invited to the 12th annual Sunshine Coast Seniors’ Forum and Expo, to be held on May 18 at Lake Kawana Community Centre. The event is hosted by Member for Fisher Peter Slipper and the Fisher Seniors’ Council, with the purpose of providing senior residents of the Sunshine Coast with friendly and informal access to free information about issues that affect them. The Seniors’ Expo that accompanies the Forum will this year again feature some 30 exhibitors, each on hand to give helpful free advice on a range of products and services of interest to seniors.

“Those who have attended past forums have commented that having so many exhibits at the expo makes it easy to gather a range of information in the one afternoon – it can save a lot of time,” Mr Slipper said. The Sunshine Coast Seniors’ Forum and Expo was first hosted by the Fisher Seniors Council and Member for Fisher Peter Slipper in 2001. The 2012 Sunshine Coast Seniors’ Forum is FREE and will be held at Lake Kawana Community Centre, Bokarina, on May 18, from 1.30pm - 4.30pm. In 1945 Ethel Burgess, then aged about nine, was excited to win the ‘Best Decorated Bicycle’ competition at an Australian Comforts Fund Garden Party held at the home of Mr and Mrs McCabe in the Glasshouse Mountains, in aid of the local branch. Ethel placed her bride doll on the handlebars with the bride’s train trailing along the sides of the bike, and weaved coloured paper through the spokes of the wheels for added decoration. During the Open Day at Bankfoot House on Sunday, May 27 there will be a competition for the Best Decorated Bicycle and organisers are looking forward to lots of entries of decorated bikes from creative cyclists. Bikes can be decorated in any way. Weaving coloured crepe paper through the spokes of the wheels, attaching streamers to the handlebars and sitting dolls on the bike are just some ideas. Balloons and all sorts of other fun items can be used. The young people of the district have terrific imaginations so organisers are sure they will think of lots of original and innovative ways of decorating their bikes. The Open Day will celebrate the 100th anniversary of an amazing feat by the Clark sisters of Brisbane. On the Empire Day weekend in 1912, two young women with their male companions rode their bikes from Brisbane to Bankfoot House along the road that is now called Old Gympie Road, and the party climbed two of the Glasshouse Mountains before riding their bikes back to Brisbane. Her Excellency the Governor of Queensland and her husband will attend the Open Day. The Governor will welcome everyone, in particular the descendants of the Clark sisters and visiting cyclists – those on pennyfarthings as well as those riding modern-day recreational bicycles. "I am standing for mayor as I want to build a culture in the council and the Sunshine Coast community for positive change. While the coast is a great place to live, it could be a lot better, with more and better jobs. We need with small infrastructure expansions to make the coast more RV and caravan friendly especially in the railway and hinterland towns and we need to utilise the council’s website more effectively to promote the coast with the theme ‘There is always something happening on the Sunshine Coast’ and promote this from the Gold Coast to Bundaberg. The coast has been built on agriculture (currently under significant pressure), tourism, construction and retail (all currently depressed). The coast economy needs to be expanded and stabilised through the knowledge industries. Council needs to support local business with its purchasing policies and have support officers for business and community organisations. There are also a number of other vitally important issues such as preservation of the natural environment, managing development, transport including public transport and parking, the importance of diversity of communities and their visual and cultural character and of course the fiscal management, asset management, debt and service delivery of the council including provision of all weather roads and bridges plus community engagement. Michael Bloyce has the right mix of qualifications, business and council experience, leadership skills, community involvement and policy vision to be the next mayor of the Sunshine Coast. With degrees in Economics and Law and an MBA, Michael has enjoyed a successful career in cultural, venue and event management. He has 20 years’ management experience with council and has worked in the private sector in the fields of life insurance, hospitality, business and arts consultancy. At 52, Michael is fit and healthy and has lived on the Sunshine Coast since 1989. He has been actively involved in community service for over two decades and is an excellent public speaker and master of ceremonies. Michael is a strong leader with solid conservative values and possesses an excellent understanding of the workings of government at all levels.

Debbie Blumel says she is the councillor who gets things done, and the first thing she'll do if elected mayor is create more jobs. "The people of the Glasshouse Mountains know the importance of more jobs - and I will deliver more jobs," she says. She has delivered as a councillor, and as mayor will create jobs, while protecting the environment. Debbie is well known for listening to the community and says she is the only mayoral candidate to commit to bringing council forums to small towns in the region. Debbie believes that the people of the Glasshouse Mountains deserve to see their mayor and councillors and have access to the senior staff – and she’ll make sure they do. Debbie says she's the only councillor standing for mayor and heads the Major Projects Portfolio in a council with a $638M budget and over 2,300 staff. Councillor Blumel held a number of senior managerial positions and represented Queensland on state and national projects before becoming a councillor. Debbie is also the only mayoral candidate to tackle the rising cost of living on the Sunshine Coast. When the price of water went up she started the Community Water Company which will roll-out rooftop rainwater harvesting to lower water prices, and reduce developers costs by 10 – 30 per cent, which then can be passed on to homebuyers. Debbie will support a new planning scheme which respects the region’s unique communities, so places like the Glasshouse Mountains get a fair go.

“I'm Jim Hopkins standing for Mayor and would like to share with you all why I have the passion, vision and the courage for the Mayors demanding position. Firstly may I say it’s a fact of life that you can't lead from behind, hence the reason I put up my hand for the Mayor's post. Mark Jamieson believes experienced leadership, economic development and the preservation of community image and identities are at the heart of his campaign. Mark believes that they will need to respect each other’s objectives and priorities whilst agreeing to a plan for action. Total exemptions on water charges to be considered as part of a general rate exemption for those who live totally self-sufficiently with their own water supply. 5. There is enhanced protection of the Sunshine Coast’s coastline, marine life, beaches, rivers and parks. 6. There is support for the development of a policy to have child care services provided in-house by council to assist families to make costs affordable. 7. Council affirms its support for local communities demanding to have development applications that are put to council rejected where the reception of 80 per cent of ratepayers objections within a postcode area for such a demand. 8. Support a rates reduction plan to be applied to all sporting clubs operating sporting facilities for young people of ages 18 years or under. 9. Support the expansion plan of the Sunshine Coast Airport.

However, the latest free download of Picasa 3.9 has many new simple tools for not only improving your photos, but having fun with them. Besides having a quick way of cropping, straightening, red eye removal, retouching and adding text there are fun effects to change the complete appearance of your picture. The Fireworks original picture on the left was first brightened with the highlight tool then the neon tool was used to get the red tinge, and this was followed by the blue tint. Vaccination encouraged ahead of ‘flu season Queensland Health is encouraging people to get immunised before this years’ flu season begins. More than 140 cases of influenza have been recorded since January, which is lower than the average number of notifications. But the State’s Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said that was no reason to become complacent about guarding against the virus. “Influenza is a highly contagious and potentially serious disease that can be spread through coughing and sneezing,” Dr Young said. “It’s especially important for people in ‘at risk’ groups to be vaccinated which is why Queensland Health provides free flu immunisation for the elderly, pregnant women, indigenous people aged over 15 and those at risk due to medical conditions such as heart and respiratory diseases. “As is the case every year, this year’s vaccine is based on the virus strains circulating in the northern hemisphere including the influenza A H3N2 strain, influenza A H1N1 and an influenza B strain. “This reliable and safe vaccine is available to prevent people getting the flu.” Anyone over the age of six months who is not severely allergic to vaccine ingredients can be immunised. “Annual vaccination against influenza reduces the chances of catching the flu and the severity of it if you do contract it,” Dr Young said. Vaccination is available through GPs, aboriginal medical services and other immunisation providers. Missing hat stand

Approached at Christmas and again in the New Year 2012, re: Positioning a hat stand at the entrance to Beerwah RSL Club, the manager stated that a hat stand would soon be provided for members use. Now autumn, when aged heads chill a little, it would be appreciated if he should keep to his promise, to provide the same, or I will no longer risk my money on the pokies or TAB, which provide the dollars of the manager’s salary. Your Council Vote Important

As a member of the LNP I was very pleased with the recent outcome; however the council Elections are even more important to our well being. It is confirmed we will have five Candidates to choose from on April 28. One candidate is very young and although keen does not have life experience. Another Candidate is getting on in years and long term reliability is a possible concern. We have three others who are in their prime to offer some experience and provide the stamina necessary for the next four years. Picking the best will be individual choice; we need to be vigilant as to the real motivation in running for this position. Does the Candidate just want a reasonably paid job, or a position that can give real support to the electorate? This is no 8.00am – 5.00pm position, it requires many after hours and weekend days on call. If you have a family situation it will place extreme pressure on the relationship. Another concern is the political affiliation of the candidates. I understand there may be preference swapping as some of the candidates are LNP members, as an LNP member I would not endorse Political affiliation within Local Government. I personally will be interested in the case each Candidate presents over the next few weeks and subject to their presentation, time permitting I will make my choice heard. Alan Mountain, Beerwah 26

Beerwah Place+ is the council process for looking at the future direction of Beerwah. Over 50 people have been involved in the focus groups, and other members of the community can get in touch with the process at http:// www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/sitePage. cfm?code=beerwah-place . The council focus groups have completed their tasks and reported back to Council and each other last week. The Council staff will now confer with department heads and rework the suggestions made by the focus groups into a proposal to take to council. The work of the focus groups is complete, and we enter a period where we watch and wait to see how fully the suggestions made to council are implemented, and also how we can carry forward the enthusiasm for community involvement into community sponsored projects. It would be easy for the 50 or so of us that have been involved in this process to lose touch with each other, so I have created a Facebook page, Beerwah Place, to enable us, and others, to keep talking. For starters, we might like to talk about the proposal by one focus group, to give Turner Street (the road that runs past the post office and past the back of Aldi) a one-way connection to the roundabout near the railway bridge. My opinion is that this would be detrimental for all the dense housing that council has encouraged along that road, but I’m just one voice! Come and join the conversation about the future direction of our town. By the way, for those of you who don’t use Facebook because you feel your privacy will be invaded, I would recommend you just set it up carefully, maximising the privacy you require. Local Government Election

Applicants for Division 1 and Mayor were

informed of what is required in relation to the positioning of advertising boards, flutes etc used in their election campaigns. This would include no signage on any public land and a signed approval for signs placed on private property, a very easy one to follow, I would assume. Have a look around the Sunshine Coast, not many Candidates have followed these instructions, and they are carrying out illegal activities. The Sunshine Coast Council has been informed, however, need I say any more? As for duty of care or policing their own rules and instructions, once again our current council fails again. The most glaring are the three applicants running for the position of mayor - Jamieson, Bloyce and Blee. I wonder just what they would get up to if they were the successful applicant for Mayor? They cannot follow these very basic directions so who in their right mind would even consider these individuals as our next Mayor? I feel they should have their applications withdrawn. The willy nilly manner in which they have erected their signage shows nothing but contempt for council laws and that they are prepared to win at any cost. I want a mayor who knows how to do things correctly. I have considered my candidate for Division 1 very carefully, I feel we require a person who has roots in our community, knows the local area, has the requirements we need to get things done. This person also shows common sense and wisdom, which one gains as we walk through life. The person I have chosen is still young enough to take the bit between the teeth and fight for us and our community at large. I am supporting Mr Steve Attrill as my Candidate for Division 1. Time for choice

The day to choose your representative for the next four years in Sunshine Coast Council is only a week away. What a significant week we will have for our local government elections with ANZAC day on Wednesday, April 25 and the elections on Saturday, April 28. As I meet with the residents of Division 1, I have not encountered many people who are unhappy to be required to return to the polling booth for the second time in a month. I see this as a celebration of the freedom of this great country we have the privilege to live in and what we stand for; the gift of the freedom that was fought for by previous generations. The Sunshine Coast is a special place with a special environment which we need to protect. The southern end of the region is cradled between the northern end of Bribie Island and the magnificent Glasshouse Mountains, nature’s design to protect the waters of the Pumicestone Passage. We as a community need to think hard and long about what we allow to happen to the flood plain that protects this marine park. The communities of Glasshouse Country with the infrastructure in place needs to be permitted to grow strong and diverse, with a balance in development to continue to deliver the lifestyle we chose, to live here and enjoy. Each of the communities will only continue to grow strong and develop an identity with committed representation. Division 1 communities have a unique opportunity ahead to grow, attracting new residents to build a strong economy, creating jobs so you can live and work in your community. Reduce landfill waste by composting and worm farms Sunshine Coast Council, in conjunction with EnviroCom Australia, will be presenting free composting and worm farm workshops over the next few months. The workshop at Beerwah Library will be held on Wednesday, May 9 from 2.00pm – 4.00pm. Attendees will learn how to reduce their landfill waste by up to 50 per cent. Workshops will also demonstrate how to set up a worm farm and composting system, how an organic recycling system works plus any troubleshooting tips. That’s the catch cry from Sunshine Coast Council after the recent severe wet weather that’s created ideal mosquito breeding conditions. Manager Community Response, Sheryl Krome said numerous breeding sites have been detected in and around residential areas throughout the region over the previous fortnight. “Residential properties have been shown to be significant mosquito breeding sites, particularly during summer,” Ms Krome said. “This has been even more prominent this past summer given the extended wet and the severe rain periods the Sunshine Coast region has experienced. “We want to get a message out to all residents about the need to be vigilant about mossie breeding in and around their homes following the recent rain events. “I checked my property on the weekend and eliminated some breeding sites within a few minutes. “Householders should introduce an easy-to-follow mini-mossie breeding survey to their weekly house/yard maintenance routine. “Given mosquitoes are capable of transmitting debilitating diseases like Ross River virus and Barmah Forest virus, regular simple household actions to reduce or eliminate their breeding should be taken seriously.” Here are some simple tips to reduce mosquito breeding around your home:

• Check places out of sight where they may be breeding e.g. roof guttering • Repair roof guttering and remove leaves and debris regularly • Remove overhanging vegetation • Empty pot plant dishes, car tyres and other containers at least once a week • Place sand around pot plant bases or store the bases for the season • Cap cavity brick walls to prevent water pooling Drill holes in tyres used for swings and garden surrounds to allow water to drain • Ensure rainwater tanks are well maintained and that intake and outlet points are screened with mesh of 1 mm or less • Fit screens to windows and doors. These actions will not fix the problem overnight but will have an impact over a week or more. Personal protection Protect yourself, your family and guests by using these precautions: • When mosquitoes are present, spray dark areas before dusk and after securing screens • Wear protective clothing outdoors (long pants and sleeves) • Explore options such as mosquito coils and burners when outdoors • Use a recommended personal mosquito repellent. With weak La Niña conditions confirmed in the Pacific, above average rain is expected in SE Queensland in 2012. “Above average rain through northern and eastern Australia is likely to prompt broad-scale flooding,” says Dick Whitaker, Chief Meteorologist at The Weather Channel. Mark Cuthel of Moroney’s Landscape Supplies stresses the importance of acting early to repair washed out driveways before the next downpour.

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Rod Jobe Church on the Rise The difference between Happiness and Joy You often hear people say ‘all I want is to be happy’. Happiness depends mostly on external circumstances. If everything that we want comes to us then we are happy. It is having health, financial security, a good job, a house, material things, friendships and family etc. We today would consider being happy, being lucky. It is what happens to us due to chance. We say to others ‘good luck’ and hope that by chance they will achieve what they are setting out to do. The cause of happiness is outward. Joy on the other hand is very different to happiness as it comes from within. Joy reaches far beyond the momentary emotional ‘lift’ of happiness. It is something that comes from within us and is not based on external things. Thomas Jefferson wrote ‘all people have the right to the pursuit of happiness. But Christians have the right to the pursuit of joy.’ In fact he went on to say ‘it is promised’. This promise was announced by angels to the shepherds ‘I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people.’ Luke 2:10 Because joy is something that comes from 38

The Taylor Queensland Super Challenge Competition - This was a competition where the Ladies of Glasshouse Country Bowls Club (under the team name of Glasshouse Gliders) played against stiff opposition from much larger clubs from all over SE Queensland, and still managed to get to the Semifinals. The round robin semi-final, held at the Tweed Heads Bowls Club, took place over the weekend of March 31 and April 1. The Ladies were matched against Begara Bowls Club first up. The Fours won their match 24 to 15, but alas, the Triples team was unsuccessful, and the combined score meant that the Ladies were out of the Semi-finals. Just to reach this stage of the competition was a great achievement and put Glasshouse Country on the map. Congratulations and well done to the Glasshouse Gliders Ladies. The A Grade and Under 18’s hosted the Kawana Dophins at Beerwah on Saturday and the A Grade still down on numbers found the Dolphins way too much to handle going down 86-4. Under 18’s showed that they can compete with the other teams on the coast by holding the Kawana side to 6-0 at half time and fitness was the key to the second half with the visitors running out 28-6 winners. Our women’s team was also missing a few key players to rep duties and ran into a good Browns Plains side in Brisbane going down 36-0. On Thursday April 5, 65 girls played a Stroke event for our much coveted monthly medal. This competition is sponsored every month by our Club Professional, John Mellish. We would like to thank John for his ongoing support of Ladies' competition. Along with the medal, John always has a special pamper package for the winners, so there is always keen competition to win. The best overall score of the day and the winner of C Grade was Helen Thompson with a great score of 69 Nett. Runner up was Lyn Steele with a 70 Nett. B Grade winner was Gail Gundry with a 73 Nett followed by Noelene Annakin on 74 Nett. The best A Grade Nett was Sue Williamson on 74, followed by Lyn Lambert with a 77 Nett. Best Gross on the day in A Grade was Sonia Kenway with a 85 off the stick , B Grade Debra Carlton with a 93 and C Grade Carol Fraser who shot 109 off the stick. NTP's were Andrea Campbell on two, Shirley Watson on five, Sue Greentree on 16 and Viki Bartel on 18. Being a monthly medal, we count our putts and Noelene Annakin really had her radar turned on, having a grand total of 24 putts. Lucky Card was won by Heather Henn. We held a Single Stableford on Thursday, April 12 with a field of 67 players. Heather Henn won Division 1 with a score of 35 points on a count back from Lesley Eggleston, also on 35 points. Brenda Briese won Division 2 with 37 points from Pam Gormley also on 37 points. Marjorie Pavitt won Division 3 with 37 points from Barb McIntosh on 34. The winners took home vouchers which were generously donated by The Garden Terrace Coffee Lounge, and a lovely orchid donated by Sharon Phillips. NTP's were Lesley on two, Meg Ferran on five, Sharon on 16 and Sonia Kenway on the 18th. The random birdie hole was number five so Meg took home the extra ball. The ball rundown went to 32. The Saturday girls played a Single Stroke on April 7 for the weekend monthly medal. This event is sponsored by Beerwah Newsagency who has generously sponsored the weekend medal event for this year.
