ASPHALT & BASE CONSTRUCTION

FROM THE EDITOR AFTER banging out nearly 900 columns for GC&M News over the past 17-and-a-bit years, it seems very strange to know this is the last one I will write. From the next edition this will be the new owner / editor Mitch Gaynor’s job and I am really looking forward to reading his take on what has been my world for so long. I am going with my usual process of quickly ‘banging out my column’ trying not to overthink things, as I really don’t want to be sad or feel too nostalgic. Brownie and I are ready for a long holiday and are keen to find new work opportunities. And, yes, we genuinely don’t know what they will be. However, most importantly, we do know it is the right decision for the future of GC&M News to have someone with Mitch’s knowledge and experience setting that course forward. We wish Mitch and the team well

Lea Parkess and would like to thank everyone for everything they have done over our time as owners, it’s been a wonderful journey. In particular I would like to thank all of the staff and contractors who have made up ‘Team GC&M News’ for the enthusiasm and dedication to their work and the contribution it has made to keeping our communities connected. On a personal note I would like to thank Greg (Brownie) not just for the immense contribution to GC&M News but for being the best husband in the whole world! Regards,

Meet the new GC&M News owner - Mitch Gaynor By Lea Parkes Regular GC&M News readers would be aware that the newspaper had been ‘on the market’, since late last year and we are really pleased and a little sad to advise that this is the final edition that Greg and I will be producing. We are genuinely pleased to introduce the new owner / editor Mitch Gaynor, who has bravely taken the step to become an independent newspaper publisher. Over the past few months we have had the pleasure of meeting Mitch and getting to know him, and it is great for us to know that someone with a real passion for print media, and with such a solid professional background, will be taking the paper into the future. And from the many conversations we have had with our advertisers, contributors and readers recently, we know that everyone is keen to learn a little bit more about Mitch … so thought we would take this opportunity to give you an introduction. Tell us a little about your background? Even though I was born in Sydney, I am a proud Queenslander who has lived in regional Queensland and Brisbane for most of my 46 years. I have five children with my wife, Tracy, ranging in age from 19 to 9. We are a very busy, creative family who celebrate the Queensland lifestyle: bring on summers, camping and barbeques … pity I’m allergic to prawns though.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

I’m pretty active and love to keep fit by boxing, even if I’m slowing down these days. My family and I have always loved Glasshouse Country and the Range, which we first discovered when my father-in-law moved to Maleny nine years ago. What attracted you to GC&M News? There is nothing I love more than writing stories that positively influence the people around me. I have worked in media for nearly 20 years, starting at the ABC followed by the Queensland Business Review – where I wrote extensively on small and medium businesses – and more recently at the Courier-Mail where I have worked almost everywhere across the newsroom including as a reporter, deputy business editor, night editor and chief of staff. The media landscape has changed significantly in recent years, but for me this has underscored the vitality of having a strong local newspaper that champions its community. What’s your favourite go-to on a Hinterland weekend? There’s so much to do, but my favourites are a picnic and walk with the kids at Mary Cairncross Reserve, staying at some of the awesome local B&Bs – most recently the cool African Village Cottages, grabbing a take-a-way coffee at Bucks Bakery at Landsborough and enjoying a family lunch at the Beerwah Hotel, where I reckon I’ve bought more kids lunches than beers.

news

It’s hard to pick the perfect weekend but any ideas are welcome! What are you looking forward to most about your first year in the chair? I’m genuinely excited about building on the legacy Lea and Brownie have created over the past 17 years. From my first conversations with Lea I was convinced that GC&M News was a great opportunity. Nobody else is telling the stories that matter to this community; highlighting the amazing achievements of people and groups and campaigning for locals. I can’t wait to get to know the people behind these stories. Please feel free to email mitch@gcnews.com.au or call me on 5438 7445 with any stories, ideas or just to say hello. Can’t wait to talk.

APOLOGY TO BLUEY

Pure Gold Instagram

GC&M News would like to apologise for any hurt caused to Bluey and the Heeler family by the incorrect reference to Bluey and ‘his’ mates in the story on page 3 in the December 20 edition – Glass House Mountains – Bluey famous. The stars of the show, Bluey and younger sister Bingo, are both girls. The sentence should have said “Bluey and her mates”. Thank you to the many, many passionate and proud Bluey fans who provided this feedback in such a polite and positive manner! If you missed the story, you can read it here https://gcnews.com.au/recent ed https://gcnews.com.au/recent-editions/

IT won’t come as too much of a surprise to locals that Visit Sunshine Coast’s best Instagram post for 2021 was a stunning photo of a pineapple plantation in the Glass House Mountains. The photo, shared by the team at Pure Gold Pineapples, showed the sun setting on another day at the farm – a sea of golden pineapples lit up underneath a tangerine sky. The photo received more than 12,800 likes and sparked a frenzy of comments from travellers who didn’t realise pineapples grow on plants like a flower, not trees. The photo was in good company, with other spectacular images of the Sunshine Coast’s iconic beaches, adorable wildlife and lush hinterland making up the top ten, which was based on highest user engagement. Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Matt Stoeckel said the top social posts of 2021 were a great reflection of what the Sunshine Coast had to offer as a destination. “If a photo tells 1,000 words, this stunning collection of images paints a true story of what makes the Sunshine Coast so appealing for visitors,” Matt said. “I was really excited to see that Pure Gold Pineapples took out the top spot, with another pineapple image coming in at number three. “Pineapples have long been a symbol of the Sunshine Coast. In fact, our very own Aussie icon the Big Pineapple celebrated its 50th birthday this year. “It’s an extremely fitting and sweet way to wrap up 2021.”

Fight for Ferny Forest continues By Greg Brown In the fight to stop the state government from logging the mature growth forest between Steve Irwin Way at Glenview and Ewen Maddock Dam, the battle lines have been drawn. In replying to locals concerned about the plans to log the forest, correspondence from the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) – the state government agency in charge of the logging – has noted their concerns but concedes no ground in their plans to log the 130 hectare native forest. Bradley Petersen, Acting Manager, Hardwood within DAF has written that DAF intends to undertake selective timber harvesting on approximately 130 hectares of Beerwah State Forest over an expected 12-month period. “Harvesting activities are expected to commence in 2022, although a start date has not yet been finalised. The site will need to close to the public during harvesting to ensure the safety of forest workers and visitors,” he explained. As a result, local groups opposed to the plans have escalated their campaign to bring political pressure to bear and have the decision reversed. The key groups – ‘Save Ferny Forest’ and ‘SAVE BEERWAH STATE FOREST (Ewen Maddock Dam section)’ – are calling on concerned locals to write to Jason Hunt, Member for Caloundra and demand that his government reverse the decision to log the forest. To get the message out, the Save Ferny Forest group have erected a large banner on Steve Irwin Way near the entrance to the Big Kart Track.

According to their facebook page the sign is “… not perfect, but we’re only getting started!” Highly regarded Sunshine Coast botanist and environmental biodiversity specialist Ann Moran has joined the calls to save the forest. Assessing the forest, Ms Moran has determined that any logging in the area will have devastating ecological impacts for the region. “Any tree removal will completely devastate the fauna and the other flora which are associated with these trees,” says Ms Moran. “The forest contains very diverse vegetation, and it is comprised of several different, complex ecosystems. Felling of trees will deeply interfere with the ecosystem, leaving a disturbed forest where the highly interdependent interactions between flora, fauna and fungi are lost.” The State Forest area, locally known as ‘Ferny Forest’ is known to be the home to a wide range of threatened and endangered species such as koala, greater glider, glossy black cockatoo and giant barred frog. Joining Ann, the Sunshine Coast Environment Council (SCEC) is as equally outraged. SCEC advocacy officer Narelle McCarthy said State forests are home to wildlife, incredible vegetation, and ecosystems. “With the deepening biodiversity and climate crises and rampant habitat destruction, these forests now need to be protected - not logged. “Beerwah State Forest contains significant conservation and cultural values and supports

threatened species such as koalas, greater gliders, regent honeyeaters (and lots more!) yet it is earmarked to be logged unless we put a stop to it,” she said. Save Ferny Forest group member Linda Daleboudt asks for your help to save the forest from logging. “We cannot accept this!” she writes. “Please help us by writing to Jason Hunt as our local State MP responsible for this area and the Queensland Premier, with your concerns.” Jason Hunt MP, Member for Caloundra Caloundra@parliament.qld.gov.au Annastacia Palaszczuk MP, Premier of Queensland thepremier@premiers.qld.gov.au

2022 - celebrating a centuary since the Maleny Show Society was formed 2022 marks 100 years since the formation of the Maleny Show Society, which is looking forward to celebrating this important milestone. Members are particularly looking forward to shining a light on the original show society members and are keen to connect with their family members who may have photos and stories from that time to share. They will also be focusing on recognising, acknowledging and sharing the stories of the hard work and contribution that many individuals are still making to the society today.

In preparation, the Maleny Show Society committee is encouraging nominations for honorary life memberships. Throughout 2021 this honour was awarded to Bill Hankinson, Monica and Fraser Skerman, Trevor Carbery, and in December Betty and George Diefenbach were also recognised for their service. As the Maleny Show Society’s long-time media partner, GC&M News looks forward to showcasing some of the society’s wonderful stories in the lead up to this year’s show on May 27-28, and we are kicking this off in this edition.

The show society committee is currently looking at several ways of recording the society’s history and possibly compiling a book. The society is particularly interested in funny anecdotes and stories from locals about their family’s involvement and experience with the show over the years. Show society secretary Lois White is keen to make contact with descendants of the society’s original and early members as well as past members who may no longer live in the area. If you have information to share, contact Lois malenyshowsociety@bigpond.com.au

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

Introducing three of the Maleny Show Society new life members Bill Hankinson

BILL Hankinson has been associated with the Maleny Show Society for more than 55 years. Bill was the chief ring steward for most of that time, a job that included obtaining sponsorship, recruiting judges, keeping records and organising helpers on the day. He remains a steward in the main i ring i and d can be b seen more than a week out from the show setting things up in rain, hail or shine. From a young age, Bill worked alongside his uncle Dave Hankinson and was mentored by the late Laurie Wild, who he remembers fondly. The trio built wooden yards for the rodeo and bamboo yards for the show horses. In those days this was no easy feat, with the heavy show jumping hurdles requiring plenty of manpower to build. Bill says becoming a life member of the Maleny Show Society, which he treasures dearly, is humbling and a great honour but he couldn’t have done it without the help of others along the way. “There’s a lot of other people that deserve this just as much as I do,” he said. “When I came into the show there were a lot of people who helped me. “If I try to list everyone’s names, I know I’ll forget someone but Laurie Wild and my wife Marlene made my life a lot easier. “Marlene was the entry secretary in the ring for many years and she was a big help to everyone at the show,” Bill said.

Monica and Fraser Skerman

MONICA and Fraser Skerman have been involved with the Maleny Show Society for more than 40 years. Fraser, touted as a quiet achiever, was involved with the grounds committee where he continually worked on projects throughout the year, keeping the place looking its best at all times. This involved maintenance of the ovals, washing down all the buildings and pathways, painting seats and buildings, and arriving weeks before the show to prepare his beloved dairy section, which he has been involved in since the dairy shed was built. Fraser supplied cattle in the days of the rodeo and was always on hand to help pull out trucks that inevitably got bogged once the show was wrapped up. He is still an active member of the committee and can always be found in the kitchen washing up after any show ball, dance or community event. His wife Monica has been equally as active in her 40 years of service. She originally joined the team with Mrs Wilds’ horse catering staff before becoming involved in all facets of the show.

Monica became vice president and the Maleny representative at the Queensland Chamber of Agricultural Societies, travelling to shows around the region representing Maleny. She has also been the show girl coordinator and a member of the show ball committee, spending hours obtaining sponsors and contacting girls to represent the show. Monica encouraged the committee to endorse a rural ambassador as part of the Maleny Show, something that has proven extremely successful. She has also contributed plenty of yummy food and countless hours organising a plethora of other events throughout the show, with the dairy section her absolute favourite. Monica said it was great to be recognised after 40 years of doing what she loved. “I just love how these shows bring the entire community together,” she said. “I’ve been involved with shows pretty much my entire life now and a big part of the enjoyment for me is the friendships that come with it. I think Fraser and I will be active with the Show Society for as long as we physically can,” Monica said. The contributions of the Show Society’s most recent life members Betty and George Diefenbach will be shared in the next edition of GC&M News.

JUST before Christmas, Australia Zoo’s four female Sumatran elephants Wati, Widya, Christine and Raflesia were welcomed into their new Elephantasia habitat. Two years after joining the zoo family in Beerwah the only Sumatran elephants on display in Australia can be seen from 10am-4pm each day. Sumatran elephants are found exclusively in the low-lying forest and gentle hills of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Solely herbivores, the Sumatran elephants’ dexterous trunk and large molars enable them to gather and process 5-10 percent of their body weight in vegetation per day, including grasses, leaves, fruit and bark. Elephants do not drink with their trunks but use them as tools to drink with. Consuming up to 200 litres of water each day, a Sumatran elephant will fill its trunk with water and then pour the water into its mouth.

Local newspapers are essential to communities es GC&M News readers won’t be surprised that a recent national survey found local newspapers are essential to hat our community. However, what you may find interesting is that hat o more than half of people who do not read local newspaperss believe this as well. yA survey, conducted in Julyws August 2021, sought the views of 400 Facebook users who er do not read a local newspaper about the role of local news within their communities. Findings from the survey show that 64.5% of respondents considered a printed copy of a local newspaper as an essential service to their communities. Just under half (48%) stated that if they ever did read a local newspaper they preferred to do so in print compared with online (33%) or via social media (13%). The research targeted participants in areas which had independent local newspapers within the Country Press Australia (CPA) network, which includes GC&M News. Deakin University Associate Professor Kristy Hess, who is leading the research,

New chef cooking up a storm

said the Facebook survey supported findings from a previous national study of local newspaper readers by her team last year highlighting a passion for the printed product. “The fact that social media users examined here [in the latest survey] also indicate a preference for print is perhaps especially profound,” Professor Hess said. Bruce Morgan, CPA executive director, said it was not just about the survival of local independent newspaper businesses but was “fundamental to community wellbeing and to basic democratic notions of accountability within those communities.”

TAMARIND Cooking School at Spicers Tamarind Retreat Maleny welcomed new head chef, Terrence Alexander, late last year. Terrence took over cooking school duties from local favourite Dan Jarrett, who remains head chef of The Tamarind Restaurant. From his home in South Africa, Terrence travelled to the UK to gain experience in London before returning as an executive chef in major hotels and resorts. However, it was his decision to join the cruise industry in 2013 that saw his career really take off. On the P&O Britannia, Terrence managed more than 120 cooks and chefs, four specialty restaurants and was the culinary lecturer for Marco Pierre White’s The Cookery Club, a hands-on cooking school at sea. The Tamarind Cooking School provides an opportunity to learn the intricacies of a range of cuisines including French, Thai, South-East Asian and Italian on a rotating schedule n Saturdays from 11am–3pm in a state-ofthe-art cooking school. Terrence says his classes are very informal and a lot of fun.

FACES and PLACES

A passion for poetry comes to life KATHY Earsman is well known in Maleny for her many years as a dedicated wildlife carer. Her Facebook page is crawling with photos of possums and bats she has rescued. She has taken many a trip to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital with an injured animal, sometimes staying up all night to give hourly feeds to baby antechinuses or navigating country roads in the dark to rescue injured wildlife. However, fewer people know of Kathy’s talent as an accomplished poet. Over three decades she has written a prolific body of work, which has now been curated into her first poetry book ‘A Sparrow’s Perspective: the poetry of Kathy Earsman’. Kathy’s late husband Peter inspired her to take up poetry. Peter, a former serviceman, heard on the radio about a poetry competition and decided to enter. He won the competition and was soon glued to his computer following his new passion. Kathy said they had just moved to Kallangur and she felt a bit lonely “with him looking into the screen all the time”. “We had two computers and so I joined him, and we sat there, side by side, writing poetry together,” Kathy said. “We would read and critique each other’s poetry and we were members of various online poetry forums. We both won prizes and had our work published in poetry magazines.” Sadly, Peter died of cancer 17 years ago and Kathy, a palliative nurse for 13 years, cared for him through his illness, staying by his side to the end.

After Peter’s death Kathy’s passion for poetry, which she had shared so closely with him, waned. Almost three decades after writing her first poem, Kathy has rekindled parts of her life with Peter and their children, along with childhood memories and astute observations of nature and the world around her, in her first book – a stunning collection of more than 100 poems including free verse, sonnets and haiku. “The poems are little bits from my past, things that had some sort of significance that I wanted to share with people,” Kathy said.

“I have drawn it all together, all the different pieces of my life, and publishing this book has made Peter’s influence significant somehow. A lot of it is about him and our life together, as well as my childhood and how various things shaped me.” The book includes poems written for Peter and each of their sons, as well as a humorous series about a character Kathy invented called the Wufflegrot, a beast with fur a pretty shade of lapis lazuli that steals poems and eats them for lunch. Maleny writer and editor Leigh Robshaw spearheaded the project and Kathy’s three sons were involved in bringing it to life. “There’s a sense of warmth in me just having this book out in the world. I’m grateful to Leigh for recognising that it was worth publishing and it gives me a sense of satisfaction,” Kathy said. “I just feel happy about it. It’s something that makes my sons proud and happy, and Peter would have been really pleased. “We tried to get a book of Peter’s poetry published but we weren’t able to do it in time. My family are really important to me – they’re kind of who I am. It feels fulfilling.” ‘A Sparrow’s Perspective: the poetry of Kathy Earsman’ is available at The Maleny Bookshop for $25.

COMMUNITY

The loved-up John and Lottie Nisbett YOU may not know their names but anyone who shops at Woolies at the Beerwah Marketplace or has attended a Beerwah and District RSL Sub Branch Anzac Day or Remembrance Day in Beerwah over the past few years will recognise this community power couple.

While John is the sub-branch president who hosts the official RSL services, together the couple provide hours of their time and service to fundraising for the RSL, including long days at the raffle tables or selling RSL merchandise outside of Woolies. However, the reason for this story is not to profile their community work but to mark an important milestone they reached as a couple on January 13 – they officially celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary. It is 60 years since they married at St Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Brisbane in 1962. They met on December 27, 1960, on Lottie’s 15th birthday, and it didn’t take them too long to realise that they were meant for each other. The couple got engaged on April 13, and had their engagement party on May 13. Then, with the permission of Lottie’s parents, they married on January 13 the following year, so clearly 13 is a lucky number of them. When they first met, John, who has Scottish heritage, was in the Queensland Police Force and also proudly a member of the Police Pipe Band, not surprisingly he was married wearing his kilt.

ith Celebrating w diamonds LLottie tti said id th thatt th they are still in contact with three of the six members of their bridal party and talked about the importance of friendship and continuing to be a part of each other’s lives over the years. At their 40th and 50th anniversaries the couple renewed their wedding vows. However, John reckons marrying the same person three times was enough, so they won’t be doing it for their 60th anniversary! He also joked that the secret to a long and happy married life was all about “doing what you we’re told” and that he was good at following Lottie’s instructions.

However, watching the two of them with each other, it is clear that the success of their marriage is based on sharing, communicating and doing things together, with John explaining that you shouldn’t leave home without letting the other one know you love them! Lottie said that while they loved their daughters dearly and would do anything for them, that at the end of the day it was each other that was the most important people in their world. As part of their celebrations they have gone with tradition and bought each other a diamond ring, which John insisted Lottie didn’t start wearing until their special day.

Remembrance ceremony in Maleny

Indigenous Football Festival

LOCAL football players and supporters are excited about the upcoming four-day festival of Indigenous football to be hosted by the Maroochydore Football Club from March 2–6. A highlight of the Sunshine Coast Indigenous Football Festival will be exhibition matches with the Australian Indigenousroos and the Australian Indigenous Koalas both up against Sunshine Coast Allstars rep teams on Saturday, March 5. Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson is urging everyone to own their piece of history by heading to the event. “With the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and now the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 firmly placed on the calendar, the Sunshine Coast is keen to host major events such as the Sunshine Coast Festival of Indigenous Football,” Mr Jamieson said. Indigenous Football ambassador and patron Craig Foster said it was wonderful to see the Matildas promote the Aboriginal flag at the recent Olympics in the Spirit of Reconciliation. “Our fellow Indigenous people need to be front and centre of everything we do,” Mr Foster said. High-profile former Socceroos Frank Farina and Travis Dodd will once again spearhead the Indigenousroos and Indigenous Koalas national teams, taking on the head coaching roles respectively. “While preparation is always short, I know that the boys will come together and put on a great show for the people of the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Farina said. Mr Dodd said it was always special to see Indigenous women represented at the elite level and given the

FOR several years a remembrance ceremony has been held in Maleny on January 26 that acknowledges the human cost of frontier conflicts for Indigenous people. Anyone is welcome to attend this year’s one-hour ceremony from 10am at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre. Attendees are welcome from 9.45am. During the ceremony a minute’s silence will be observed to remember the Indigenous people of this continent and its islands who lost their lives in the dispossession of their land that began on January 26, 1788. The ceremony comprises a welcome to country, excerpts from history (especially local history), poetry, music and song. There is also time for silent meditative remembrance. The event provides an opportunity for those in the hinterland and Glasshouse region to remember and honour those who died seeking to defend or retain their ancient homeland, which is now called Australia. Stroll down the new boardwalk WITH two extra weeks of school holidays, are you on the look out for new things to do? Then head to Mooloolaba and check out some stunning views from the boardwalk project completed by Sunshine Coast Council. In early November the council opened the first part of the new Northern Park in Mooloolaba that provides a stunning new vantage point to take in the sensational views of Mooloolaba Beach down to Point Cartwright. The project includes a new viewing platform at the Alex Bluff Foreshore Park, a beautiful 200m long boardwalk and staircase linking the boardwalk to Mooloolaba Esplanade, plus significant embankment revegetation and plantings around a new grass open space.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said that both the viewing platform and the boardwalk featured plenty of seating options and sweeping coastal views with space for easy accessibility. The new infrastructure is stage one of the greater Mooloolaba Foreshore Revitalisation Project. Work is also under way on the adventure playground with a one-ofa-kind design that includes a climbing net, an adventure play tower and an extended swing set. The next stage of the project will also include a new public amenity, sheltered barbecue area and an accessible path that will link the new boardwalk to Mooloolaba. Plenty of questions at elder abuse forum

THE Speak Up Now – Stop Domestic Violence group held its second annual elder abuse information session in December with 40 attendees at the Maleny RSL. The successful session included a short film in the form of a drama outlining issues for older people and their legal rights, including enduring powers of attorney and wills. This was followed by morning tea and a question-and-answer session. Professional presenters from Maleny law firm Easton Lawyers, the Suncoast Community Legal Service, Relationships Australia (elder abuse team) and Centacare Domestic Violence Service attended to provide information and answer audience questions. Speak Up Now representative Val France said the majority of questions asked by attendees related to enduring power of attorney documents. These questions focused mainly on possible abuses from having someone either not suited to or not having the ability (eg, not having the time or inclination) to take care of the person’s financial, personal and health needs when they lost their medical and legal capacity to make their own decisions. “Attendees were also interested in whether the person appointed had to be a family member, how many attorneys could be appointed, when the attorney’s

Speak Up Now members Ian Demack, Val France and Linda McElrea power to make decisions for the person making the appointment commenced, and how decision-making should be made, jointly, severally or by majority, where three or more attorneys were appointed,” Val said. She said that as some people did not have anyone suitable to act as their attorney, there was discussion about the Public Trustee and the Public Guardian and the legal mechanisms for those statutory authorities to be appointed. Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee would love more community support THE Beerwah Sportsground, an important community facility for local sport and recreation, is managed and maintained by the Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee, a group of community volunteers. Committee chair David Weil is proud of the tireless effort these dedicated individuals have contributed to the sportsground over many years. With the ever-increasing pressure and challenges faced from restrictions and requirements enforced by Sunshine Coast Council, the committee is keen to welcome additional support and involvement from locals with an interest in promoting and improving the sportsground. Anyone interested in getting involved is invited to the committee’s upcoming annual general meeting on Wednesday, February 2 at 7pm in the meeting room at the sportsground.

The hardcourts cater for tennis, basketball and netball and have recently been resurfaced and the lighting upgraded. The sportsground also has outdoor gym equipment, a children’s playground and three (free) electric barbeques with tables and seating for use by the community. Enquiries can be made directly through the caretaker’s office at the sportsground or by calling 5494 0513 or emailing beerwahsports2@bigpond.com

This vital community facility is used by a range of affiliates including Beerwah Rugby League, Glasshouse Pony Club, Sunshine Coast Kennel Club, Beerwah Charity Sports, Beerwah Lions Club, Beerwah Rotary Club, Bocce Bowls, Beerwah and District RSL Sub Branch, Beerwah State High School and Glasshouse Christian College. There is also a community hub building at the sportsground where Celebrate Glasshouse Country can be found, with rooms available to hire by groups needing space to hold activities and events. The hardcourts at the rear of the sportsground, a shared facility between the high school and the sportsground, are available for hire in out-of-school hours, weekends and school holiday periods.

Work continues to change the ending UNITING Church of Maleny minister Rev Liena Hoffman and the church congregation recently joined the Speak Up Now – Stop Domestic Violence group to unveil Maleny’s fifth red bench in December. The bench is in a lovely location under a large leopard tree overlooking the Obi Obi Creek. It’s a tranquil place to sit and contemplate, and to also have important conversations about how domestic and family violence is destroying too many lives and what the community collectively can do to ‘change the ending’. Speak Up Now group member Val France, who has worked in the domestic violence sector for more than 20 years, said that the community should remember that every year domestic and family violence increases. Val said the types of violence were getting more extreme, with predominantly women and children as victims, although the number of male victims reporting violence was also increasing. Having looked at data from the courts, Val said that each year the number of victims making applications for protection orders increased as did the number of reported breaches of those orders.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

“Often a protection order is only a band-aid solution, giving a victim a false sense of security that they are safe from further violence,” she said. “But, in reality, a protection order may be breached many times before a perpetrator is held to account by police or the courts. “We have all heard the terrible stories of police allowing perpetrators to go back to their family home and, in many instances, the perpetrator then causes further violence to their loved ones. “In many cases it is not because the police do not act, it is because they have limited powers to act as they would if the legislation permitted them to,” Val said. Domestic violence protection orders issued 2019/2020- 44,179 2020/2021 - 51,697 Breaches lodged 2019/2020 - 24,142 2020/2021 - 30,538 “To reduce the number of perpetrators causing harm, we need stronger legislation that enables stronger penalties for perpetrators who continue to commit domestic and family violence,” Val said. The Women’s Safety and Justice Taskforce recently released its report called ‘Hear her voice’, which has 84

recommendations on how we all can help victims of domestic and family violence. The taskforce chair, Justice Margaret McMurdo AC, in the foreword wrote: “Legislators, public servants, friends, family, bystanders, community members, service providers, police, lawyers, judicial officers - of whatever gender - together we can do so much more to make perpetrators accountable and keep women and children safe. But first - Hear her voice”. This is exactly what the Speak Up Now – Stop Domestic and Family Violence group (Maleny and Blackall Range) has been trying to do for almost two years

– working to get the whole community on board to speak up against domestic and family violence against friends, neighbours, family members as well as the stranger on the street. “It is only if we work together to say no more violence, to say it is unacceptable in our community, that we may be able to achieve our goal to reduce domestic and family violence here in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. Will you help us to achieve our goal?” Val said. For more information about how you can support the group with its aims contact speakupnowstopdomesticviolence@ gmail.com

Old phones can save lives DID someone in your household get a new phone for Christmas and their old phone is still hanging around? Old phones can be donated to local organisation DV Safe Phone to help people experiencing domestic and family violence. DV Safe Phone CEO and founder Ashton Wood said one of the first things that gets broken or stolen during domestic violence is the victim’s mobile phone, which leaves them powerless,” Mr Wood said. “People often wonder what they can do to help and say they don’t have that opportunity to intervene directly. Everyone can do something. If that means getting out your old phone and dropping it off, that will make a difference to people affected by domestic and family violence.”

DV Safe Phone ensures your old mobile phone has been fully erased and tested before it is distributed to victims of domestic violence who are in desperate need of assistance. Australian Wearable Art Festival 2022

Winner Avant-garde and Supreme Overall Winner Amaterasu by Jodie Whittaker

ONE of Australia’s largest wearable art shows is back on the Sunshine Coast this year in a must-see show for the region. More than 50 national and international entries will take to the catwalk in a spectacular night of entertainment on Saturday, May 21 at Venue 114, Kawana. In a unique intersection of art colliding with fashion and costumery, Australian Wearable Art provides a platform for artists and designers to embrace their creative exploration of form, structure, texture and colour using an eclectic mix of often unusual materials. This exciting journey merges materials in weird and wonderful collaborations with art, science, fashion and technology, resulting in are proudly presented wearable pieces of art. The festival features four main categories, with artworks that might be made from beautiful fresh flowers, repurposed bicycle tyres, teabags or police tape. It’s a visual feast. The audience will enjoy the chance to meet the artists and see the works up close. Event curator Wendy Roe said the high calibre of the artists, the style of artwork as well as the intimate connection with the audience had been an important part of what made the festival so intriguing. “We are excited to be growing the event into the larger space of Venue 114 and to offer more options for people to attend by hosting an afternoon runway show as well as a gala evening event that will include a night of food, drinks and exceptional artwork,” Wendy said. The 2019 supreme winner, Jodie Whittaker, said it was the first time she had been a part of the Australian Wearable Art Festival. While Jodie has a love for creativity and fashion, she specialises in macramé.

Tickets are already available at https://venue114. com.au starting from $50. The event provides an exclusive insight into the world of wearable art as well as front-row seats to one of the best fashion parade shows you will see all year.

Plenty of love for Maleny Player’s panto Contributed by Diane Hobson

THE Maleny Players would like to thank everyone who came along in December to see our pantomime ‘The Princess and the Golden Casket’ (written and directed by Rob Hobson with Kim Zwalf as assistant director). Thanks also for all the great reviews we received, including the following comments: “My husband and I took our grandchildren along and the show was absolutely fantastic. We all thoroughly enjoyed it. The actors were amazing and we loved how interactive you all were with the audience, especially the little ones sat on cushions at the front. Amazing. In England it was always a tradition of ours to dress up and go to see a pantomime at Christmas. Thank you so much for allowing us to carry on this tradition with our grandchildren here. Such a professional and funny show.” “Fabulous performance, a really fun evening, will definitely be back.” ”Our gang had so much fun!!! Thank you everyone for all your hard work and for the excellent show.” “Thank you for a wonderful performance. It is becoming a Christmas tradition and we love it every year.” “Loads of fun! I’m making up for the years as a kid and never went to one!”

It was wonderful to have our up and coming young actors involved, with two of them taking the lead roles with Scarlett Hirt as Alice and Sam Hamilton-Barry playing the Huntsman and alias - Prince Gordon of Mondovia. The Maleny Players are always

looking for new actors, help with sound and lighting, props, costumes, makeup and front of house. If you are interested in joining, please email malenyplayers@gmail.com We wish everyone a happy New Year and look forward to seeing you at our 2022 productions.

ELECTED Reasons to be cheerful

representatives

IF you’re a baby boomer (born 1946-1964), you will probably warmly remember Ian Dury’s famous song ‘Reasons to be Cheerful, Pt3’. As we start the new year, I was thinking it could be a great tune to set up 2022 with a more determined optimism. Interestingly, as I searched for the YouTube clip, I also discovered that David Byrne (from American rock band Talking Heads) has founded a whole website called ‘Reasons to be cheerful’ that is packed with well researched stories to inspire us to approach everything with more curiosity and hopefulness. So, regardless of when you were born, let’s come together to seek the silver lining and re-imagine 2022 and beyond!

A word from John McGrath WHAT’S DRIVING THE RENTAL MARKET ACROSS AUSTRALIA? Rental values are rising at their fastest pace in a decade, according to a new report from CoreLogic. So, what’s pushing rental values higher? There are a few factors behind the 6.6% average surge in rents across Australia over FY21. That’s triple the 10-year average growth rate of 1.8% by the way, so something major must have happened and, of course, you know what it is – the pandemic. COVID-19 and its flow-on effects have impacted rental values in four unique ways: ғ # - )/ ' (*- /*-$0(. +0/ $) +' to protect tenants in 2020 resulted in very low turnover of rentals for an extended period. This created a backlog of demand, so when the moratoriums ended, landlords were able to raise their rents significantly. ғ Ҋрш # . ' /* (*- $)/ -) ' migration, as city dwellers who can

work from home do a seachange or treechange to regional areas within their own state or other states – the most popular being Queensland. This has created a population surge in many lifestyle areas and pushed rental values higher due to the new demand. ғ *( $)1 ./*-. - ' 1 - "$)" /# strong market to take profits. This is reducing the pool of rental homes available to tenants. According to REA data, one in four homes sold in the month of June were ex-rentals. ғ 2 ($)$)" /$1$/4 Ҍ ) # ) new mining jobs – in Western Australia and Queensland are driving up rental demand in certain areas, not just in mining towns but also coastal areas and capital cities with transport links to FIFO mining sites. Rents have skyrocketed in some areas, such as South East Tasmania which recorded the greatest rental value gains

over the year at 23.7%. This was largely due to increased internal migration. The other top 10 regions for rental value growth include Darwin (21.8%); Mandurah in coastal Western Australia (21%); four areas of Perth (16%-17.5%); Coffs Harbour-Grafton (16.7%) and the Richmond-Tweed regions (19.9%) in Ѹ ) /# 0).#$) * ./ җрцѵч‫ڿ‬Ҙ $) Queensland. Darwin and Western Australia feature heavily in the top 10 not only because of mining but also a tightened supply of rentals due to investors gradually leaving these markets over several years since 2014 when the last mining boom ended. Seachanging and treechanging is largely responsible for the surge in rental values in Coffs Harbour-Grafton, the RichmondTweed (which incorporates Byron Bay) and the Sunshine Coast. Rents fell in various parts of Melbourne and Sydney, with the greatest loss

4 Reasons to consider selling this Summer: It’s not just Summer that’s hot. Here’s what you need to know if you’re thinking about selling this summer season. Large numbers of buyers are actively searching. More than 12 million people were looking to buy this time last year.

More people are looking at property! CoreLogic has recorded 476 million views of properties for sale.

The holidays don’t stop people wanting to inspect homes. Enquiries on properties for sale increased by 68% over the past 12 months.

Home values continue to rise significantly, 22% nationally in the past 12 months.

John McGrath occurring in Inner Melbourne at -7.2%. It’s no surprise this market has dropped given its reliance on migrants and overseas students, however this will turn around as soon as the international border reopens. Parramatta in western Sydney also lost some rental value but only -2.1% over the year. This also relates to a loss of demand from migrants and students, who are attracted to Parramatta for its multicultural community, vast local amenities, and its proximity to the University of Western Sydney. As the pandemic continues to drag on, it’s fair to say that the drivers of rental growth will remain in place for most of FY22.

Top tips to be storm ready this Summer While Queensland is often described as ‘beautiful one day, perfect the next’, there’s no denying that between the sunshine-filled days, we can experience some downright destructive weather so it is important that both landlords and tenants prepare for the storm season this Summer. Landlords should: Ensure trees are maintained and are a safe distance away from the house Ensure gutters are cleaned regularly

Attend to any roof maintenance such as loose tiles Install shutters or screens if you are in a cyclone prone area Tenants can best protect their belongings and assist in protecting the home by undertaking the following: Tie down or secure outdoor furniture, as well as other unsecured items Move vehicles undercover during wild weather

Unplug all electrical devices during an electrical storm Turn off the gas and water during a cyclone Use sandbags to reduce the impact of flooding Have a portable battery-operated radio and torch with fresh or spare batteries and bulb on hand in the event of loss of power

What is a depreciation schedule? A depreciation schedule is a report that outlines all available tax depreciation deductions for a residential investment property. Most properties, new and old, have depreciation available. A depreciation schedule will project capital works deductions and plant and equipment depreciation for the life of

Time for a creative road trip?

Truth, Healing and Prophecy exhibition

By Lea Parkes AFTER reading about Tawny Trails, which was launched back in November, I realised that this was my idea of a road trip, providing the opportunity to escape from everyday life in just the one day without travelling far from home. The creators of Tawny Trails, a self-drive tour through the Moreton Bay hinterland townships of Woodford, Mount Mee, Ocean View Estates, Dayboro and Samford, have brought together what they describe as a creative living experience that mixes the beauty of nature and the magic of creativity into an art and lifestyle tour.

arts

The trails are offered on the last Sunday of the month, with the next one on January 30. It features 14 individual galleries, both private and community, as well as studios, retail businesses offering, food, books and yoga, horse riding and walking for you to enjoy as well as accommodation options. Each location has been picked to express different elements for your creative journey with no place alike. It is a great opportunity to meet award-winning artists surrounded by their work and to participate in workshops. Visit the Tawny Trail’s website to learn more about the different locations, as well as well as an interactive trail map. www.tawnytrails.com

ARTS Connect Inc is currently working on a group exhibition portraying the journey of resilience, recovery and hope to be held from February 4–March 3 at the Old Ambulance Station Gallery in Nambour. The work featured will include up to three pieces of 2D and 3D art works from members of Art Connect Inc, with one artist to take out a $500 people’s choice prize. Many artists say that art is their refuge, that the very physical process of creating art allows them to process what is going on in their life and how they relate to the world around them. The exhibition team bringing this project together has already heard artists relate wonderful stories of their journey and they are excited to be able to offer this opportunity to all. Combined with the exhibition there will also be an additional Art-To-Go section where artists can include three works priced under $100 for sale. The gallery is located at 80 Howard Street Nambour and is open from 9.30am-3.30pm each day. Arts Connect Inc supports and connects artists on the Sunshine Coast. To the Glassie and beyond GEOFF Martin relocated from northern NSW in late 2020 to take over from Sharon Bochow as manager/ secretary of Club Glass House. Coming to the role with decades of experience in the hospitality/club industry, the club’s management committee looked to Geoff to take the club to its next stage of development. He arrived as the local area was seeing rapid growth and with the club dealing with lengthy COVID-19 lockdowns and operational changes required to meet all the COVID safe practices. Geoff has been focused on positioning the club for the future and, just over 12 months since his arrival, GC&M News caught up with him to see how his first year has gone and to check out the changes introduced at the club.

Geoff said there was no doubt that the Glass House Mountains was changing and there was a new and younger demographic coming to the area. “Our challenge is to ensure that the club is equipped to capture this market,” he said. “This will entail not only ensuring the physical attributes of the club are suitable but also adapting our thinking to ensure that we are inclusive of the entire community.” You now arrive at the club via Gardner Street. Yes, the club’s address is officially 10 Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains, however you can now more safely access the car park just around the corner in Gardner Street. Inside the club, Geoff has set about implementing a number of pressing changes including upgrading the pokies area and a revamp of the look and functioning of the bar. Customers love the improved beer system, which has meant an increase in the range of craft beers as well as alcoholic ginger beer now available on tap. To encourage new and younger members of the community to feel welcome at the club, Geoff and the team have expanded the regular activities, particularly the inclusion of the monthly Sunday afternoons on the green with live music and entertainment for the kids. They also now offer a monthly Sunday breakfast as well as Wednesday steak night and Thursday schnitzel night. You may have also noticed that the club is now heavily promoted on social media and is now referred to as ‘The Glassie’. It’s no longer just the bowls club

from a decade ago or its rebranded identity of Club Glass House, but a more relaxed, fun, casual place for the local community to hang out with their mates, neighbours and family and friends. The changes haven’t stopped there, a major upgrade is currently underway outside the foyer. The old wooden back door and the shade shed for smokers out the back is being replaced and fancied up, which will significantly improve the first impressions for guests when they arrive. If you haven’t been to the Glassie, why not drop in for a drink or a meal. It is currently open for lunch Wednesday to Sunday, and dinner Wednesday to Saturday. Greber Road at Beerwah

IF you have driven down Old Landsborough Road between Beerwah and Landsborough you may have noticed Greber Road, named after the man known as the founder of the Australian macadamia industry, Norman Rae Greber. In 1917, aged 15, Norman left his home near Ballina in northern NSW and joined his brother who was farming in Montville, before relocating to a property at Amamoor near Gympie in 1919.

HINTERLAND

He went on to buy 40 acres (16ha) of scrub, which he cleared by hand. In the 1920s he searched for thin-shelled nuts from macadamia trees and planted 500 seedlings on his Amamoor farm. By the end of the decade, with 1,000 trees, he continued to refine his grafting techniques and became the first Australian to graft macadamias for commercial production. In 1951, Norman relocated to 33 acres (6ha) of flat land at Pine Camp Road, Beerwah. The sugar company CSR bought most of his land in 1963 and engaged him for the next 11 years to train its staff in growing and grafting. On Australia Day 1993 he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM). Norman died later that year. HEALTH

Improving local treatment options A CUTTING edge radiotherapy technique with millimetre accuracy is now available to Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) patients. Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy (SABR) is a precise technique that delivers high doses of radiation to a very small area of the body. SCHHS medical director radiation oncology Dr Nicole Buddle said there were many advantages to its use in suitable patients. “SABR delivers a much more highly focused dose of radiation to a tumour, compared with what can be achieved with conventional radiotherapy,” Dr Buddle said. “Because the treatments are delivered with millimetre accuracy there is a reduced risk of significant side effects, making this treatment easier for patients to tolerate. “As the technique typically involves between one and five treatments, there are also fewer trips to the hospital for the patient, compared with conventional radiotherapy that can be up to six weeks of daily treatments. “SABR is ideally suited to the treatment of small primary cancers and small areas of metastasis (cancer that has spread from another site in the body) and it can be used as an

alternative treatment for patients who are not suitable for surgery. “Previously, patients on the Sunshine Coast either had pay to have this treatment at a local private provider, or travel to Brisbane to receive it. “Now SABR is available to treat SCHHS patients with small lesions in the lung, and it is hoped its use will continue to expand to include other areas, such as the brain and liver. “The introduction of SABR to SCHHS is part of our ongoing development of services at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital Adem Crosby Centre,” Dr Buddle said. The first SCHHS patient to be treated with the SABR technique in early December was 85-year-old Cyril. He said he had a small lesion on his lung that was detected in August. “I’ve had radiation before but that was for 20 days at a time – 60 days in total. With this one (SABR), I only need four days of treatment and because you receive a stronger dose, it cuts down the time you need to be at hospital,” Cyril said. “The radiation is supposed to get rid of the cancer. I thought I’d have to go to Brisbane for it but the Sunshine Coast University Hospital ended up getting this machine in, which is damn great.”

More than $50,000 volunteer grants THE Old Witta School Community Centre is just one of several local volunteer organisations to receive a share of more than $50,000 funding for 14 hinterland-based community organisations in the federal electorate of Fisher. The Witta facility, which provides a unique historic community meeting site in extensive and well-maintained grounds, received $5,000 for a ride-on lawnmower. Grant Fincher, Old Witta School Community Centre Committee president, said that for some time the centre had relied on volunteers to transport and supply their own lawnmowers to maintain the more than two hectares of grounds at the old school. “This is time consuming and inconvenient and makes it more difficult to maintain our grounds to the highest standard,” Grant said. Other organisations in the GC&M News readership area to receive funding of between $1,000 and $5,00 included the Beerwah and District Memorial Golf Club, which received $4,500 for a volunteer buggy for transport.

Jobs for the yard in February

• CITRUS trees are heavy feeders and need fertilising now. Use a specific citrus fertiliser and apply at the rate on the bag. • Citrus leaf miner causes ugly distorted leaves with silvery trails in the leaf tissue. Meyer lemons are particularly susceptible. Pest oil (or white oil) is a non-toxic control. Spray when new growth is about 1cm long and reapply every 2-3 weeks. February is a crucial time to spray. • Tidy up the strawberry beds. Remove any dead or diseased plants, weed and give them a fertilise. Keep them well watered so they produce runners for next season. • Fertilise your Camellia sasanqua bushes as the buds appear. Use a special camellia and azalea fertiliser. • Remove spent flowering stems of agapanthus. You can collect the seeds and grow them yourself.

• Prepare bulb beds and beds for springflowering annuals with deep digging, adding organic matter and mulching. Start looking in books or on the internet for different spring flowering bulbs you might like to order this month and plant in autumn. • Once the sweet corn has finished, start to prepare the ground for peas and snow pea crops by digging in garden lime to raise the pH level in preparation for March/April planting. Chop up the old sweet corn plants and dig them back into the garden as organic matter. A mower with a catcher does a good job if you don’t have a mulcher. • Take softwood cuttings of geraniums and pelargonium so you can strike them and create new plants. • Sew broccoli and cabbage seeds now and raise them for planting in March and April.

Feeling Fruity

with Spencer and Karen Shaw Not only does Forest Heart stock the best range of bush food plants on the Sunshine Coast, we have a great range of fruit trees for your orchard and backyard. We believe a key way that we can reduce our negative impacts on the natural environment is by not only returning local native plants to ourr gardens, farms and the wider landscape but also taking responsibility for some of our own food production and that’s where some exotic fruit and nut trees can help! Exotic fruit trees we currently have in-stock include avocado’s, citrus, banana, pomegranate, blueberry and subtropical apples to name a few. Bush food must haves that you should plant in your yard include: Midyim (Austromyrtus dulcis) a great low growing shrub/groundcover; Riberry Syzygium luehmannii tastes good raw and even better glaced in a sugar syrup; Davidson Plums (Davidsonia spp.) although not strictly local, are spectacular foliage specimens with their large leaves and large beautiful looking sour plum like fruit; Plum Pine (Podocarpus elatus) also produce a juicy succulent, plum like fruit with a pleasant pine taste and again, fantastic for jams and syrups. Grow and enjoy the taste of your own fruit, nuts and bush foods.

FOREST HEART Eco-Nursery

• It’s important to keep up regular watering of citrus while they are flowering and developing small fruits. • Remove scale from indoor plants using soapy water and a soft toothbrush. • To treat lawn grubs, try sprinkling the area with a little laundry powder, then water it in. The grubs will come to the surface and the birds will feast on them. • Trim back wayward shoots of wisteria to keep it under control. • Keep dead-heading roses and lightly prune to prolong the late summer flush. • Maintain fruit fly traps and destroy spoiled fruit. Always destroy fruit flyinfected fruit by placing the lot in boiling hot water to kill the maggots before putting in your compost. • In a heavy downpour, put a raincoat on and check the drainage in your garden. See what areas need changes to ensure good drainage so plants don’t become waterlogged in extended rainy periods. • If you haven’t done so, prune your poinsettias (including snowflake) to promote new growth for the next flowering. • Pick your beans on a regular basis – even the ones that are old or insect damaged. Regular picking stimulates the plant to keep producing instead of dying back.

Has your rainwater tank been getting enough attention? SUMMER on the Sunshine Coast means sun, sand, surf… and storms and bushfires. Is your rainwater tank up for the challenge? Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service manager environmental health Greg Bennett says using rainwater tanks involves low maintenance, not no maintenance. “Like all drinking water supplies, rainwater systems need to be monitored. The associated maintenance is not too onerous but it is necessary,” Mr Bennett said. “Monitoring your rainwater tank is an

important responsibility, consisting of a range of visual inspections rather than laboratory testing of rainwater quality. Maintenance is needed to maintain good water quality and prevent mosquitoes breeding.” The top monitoring and maintenance activities that will help you keep your rainwater tank system safe include: • Clean gutters (six-monthly and after storms) • Clear the first-flush device of debris (monthly and after storms) • Check for evidence of animal, bird or insect access (six monthly)

• Check roof and gutters for accumulated debris including leaf and other plant material (six monthly) • Check and trim overhanging branches (six monthly) • Inspect and repair downpipes, check condition of the roof (six monthly) • Check tanks for sludge accumulation (at least every 2-3 years). If sludge is covering the bottom of the tank, siphon it out or completely empty the tank. Professional tank cleaners operate in many areas • Prevent tanks and gutters from becoming breeding sites for mosquitoes by insect screening “Rainwater is generally safe to drink providing it is clear, has little taste or smell, and is from a well-maintained system,” Mr Bennett said. “However, reticulated or town water provides the safest and most reliable source of drinking water. “Queensland Health recommends that residents should use town water supplies for drinking, personal hygiene and food preparation if they live in areas that have access to these supplies.” Mr Bennett said that for most people, especially those who had been drinking rainwater for most of their lives, there would be very little health risk in drinking rainwater, provided the rainwater collection and storage system was well maintained.

“However, there are some members of the community for whom microorganisms (such as bacteria) when present in rainwater could pose health risks, including infants, the elderly and immune-compromised people such as transplant, dialysis, HIV or cancer patients with severely weakened immune systems,” Mr Bennett said. “These people should consider disinfecting the water before drinking or cooking with it. You can do this by boiling the water.” Rainwater may be used without further treatment for flushing toilets, the cold-water laundry tap and for watering gardens and lawns as these uses generally present a low risk of disease.

Thanks to an out-of-sorts Mercury, it’s a week when major conflict can grow out of minor issues. On the positive side, this somewhat audacious planet gives you the courage to ask for what you want, even if you were previously refused. Your ideas and actions strengthen. Warning: avoid being combative in close quarters.

Hang the ‘do not disturb’ sign Pisces. With Mercury back-peddling in your sector of subconscious and endings, privacy takes priority. Even if your social life is already dialled back, you crave even more solitude. This is a time of healing, so be gentle with yourself. It’s a week for quiet meditation, preferably out in nature.

It’s time to sit down and resolve your problems with loved ones. If you don’t take this opportunity to talk with your spouse, colleagues or friends, then expect upheavals by week’s end. Clear the air by unearthing any hidden hostilities. Discuss finances especially. Health will improve once the tension has been cleared.

It’s time to kick back, relax and not take yourself or others too seriously. With Mercury out of phase, think carefully about creating rifts that you’re likely to regret. To ward off Mercury’s pessimism, do everything in your power to alleviate stress and have fun. A little romance and revelry might do. Some healthy exercise too.

Your outlook on life undergoes a major revision right now, particularly as a pensive Mercury has you reassessing relationships. If you no longer share the same values, start finding new friends that truly understand you. Indeed, expect associates to come and go for a while. Life may be unsteady but you will feel a sense of relief.

It’s hard sticking to the centre of a problem when your head is spinning like a centrifuge. Once your mind settles, options will become more defined. There are times in your life when a crisis forces a change. That time is now. As well as altering the way you react to others, you develop a deep need to locate that special power within us all.

Mercury is at a standstill, which has most of your zodiac neighbours in a flutter. Bbut not you, Leo. This week you’re determined to take that proverbial leap of faith. Go for it. You now have planetary permission to take what’s yours and the time’s right to trash whatever’s stagnant or obsolete. So out with the old, and in with the new.

Cancel as many appointments as you can this week, especially those you dread. This is one of those mind-spinning times when life can far too easily turn into a stress-fest. Instead, slide on your slippers, put your feet up and get comfortable. Keep a low profile – it could be the wisest thing you’ve done for ages. Simply relax.

Thanks to an erratic Mercury, indecision could be your downfall this week, so postpone any major decisions or plans. Someone will be pressing you for an answer but they can wait a little longer. Don’t let yourself be bullied. Also keep a tight hold of your purse strings – avoid the temptation to overspend.

Occasionally you’re given goals that seem to fall short of fair. Don’t fret. It’s all just part of the great cosmic plan. In any case, the fun’s not always at your expense and this week’s targets are within reach. If nothing else, this should throw you into a more positive frame of mind. It’s a busy time carrying a few extra responsibilities.

Mercury continues to take the wire cutters to all lines of communication, so forget any presumptuous ideas you had of a flourishing rapport. Nobody’s talking – at least not in the way you’d like. Brace yourself for another week of detoured payments, dysfunctional diallers and ambiguous agreements.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

This week finds most Pisceans blessed with achievement and genuine joy. The universe sets its generous heart on rewarding you. You’ve been through some challenging times, for sure, but all that diligence finally starts to pay off. Take some time to reflect on the past few months and then seize any new opportunity in front of you.

The cosmos finds you in a meddling mood. Be careful or you could talk your way into a headache’s worth of commitments. Some situations don’t need your input, so get out of the way and trust that others will get on just fine without you. The good news? Money matters no longer seem to be a thorn in your side.

Forget your usual Taurean caution. This week your need for fun is on par with any of the more uninhibited, gogetting zodiac signs. This means non-stop action and, delightfully, even long-held plans may be detoured by a surprise. Stay flexible for unexpected events, especially the loving kind.

We all make mistakes and sometimes we tend to repeat said mistakes time and time again. So you’d think by now you would have learned to listen to that inner voice, the one that suggests reason. This week you either heed the lesson or stumble back to square one. Stay clear of financial schemes that seem too good to be true.

A restrained Mercury now calls for less speculation and more consolidation of resources. This message may be frustrating but a temporary slowdown is inevitable during this potentially difficult week. If you’re going to spend anything this week, make sure it’s just quality time with your nearest and dearest.

Get smarter mortgage advice & the most suitable loan for you

Common sense proves to be your biggest ally this week when you’re asked to be more giving in your approach to life and love. Children draw out your nurturing tendencies, or close friends and family need a helping hand. If that means putting up with minor gripes, so be it. You now have heavenly support.

Fear can often hold us back and so often leads to missed opportunities. Don’t give up or change direction this late in the game just because of a few delays. Stick with it, have faith and trust both the heavens and your intuition. Live life to the full and success may come sooner than hoped.

Energy takes a temporary dive this week, as weary Leos retreat. The upside? What you don’t do for yourself you’ll do for others and, in time, this selflessness will be repaid. Perhaps not immediately but favours are often returned just when you need them most. This is a time when one small kindness could make all the difference.

Your strong character and search for perfection is what distinguishes you from others. You’re always looking for the best solution to any problem. Some shy away from your authoritarian character. One thing’s for certain – others notice your presence but you can be a tad too serious. Relax Virgo. Sometimes it’s just life.

From time to time, the least amount of effort can bring the biggest rewards. Librans have charm and confidence but this week your steadfast spirit also steers most things your way. Plus your words and actions ensure you deliver the goods. It’s a winning formula at a time when you’re urged to mix business with pleasure.

If someone suddenly takes pot shots at you it’s because you’ve only just come into their sights. Being noticed has its upside but also finds you in the crosshairs. Envious colleagues are happy to gun down your dreams. Sidestep swiftly and often. No need to broadcast your innermost thoughts. Keep everything under wraps.

Tensions flare as power struggles promote either fight or flight. Your fiery Sagittarian anger can be explosive but suppressing emotions isn’t healthy either. If you have a problem, aim for a positive outcome rather than just venting. Either clear the air or take very long walks. Your health can only improve with a little extra exercise.

Good one Capricorn. You’ve managed to make it to this point with much of your stability still intact. All you have to do now is keep your cards pinned close to your chest while doing business as usual. Two hints: don’t say more than you have to and don’t try to fix what isn’t broken. This week keep everything objective and balanced.

Callie is super sweet and loves attention. She is very much a puppy at heart and will likely do all those naughty puppy things. With time, training, exercise and loads of love from you, Callie will become the family member you always wished you had. We’re unsure if has ever been around children, cats or livestock at this time, she does seem to be okay around some other dogs. You will need secure fencing to ensure Callie is kept safely at home.

Contributed by Ken Barker Play resumed on January 2 with a gritty game between Vince Carbery and Ken Barker. Adrift in a sea of errors these two could only manage seven hoops apiece before calling an early close in the teeth of an approaching real-life storm. There was no play on Thursday, January 6 because it was too wet. This meant an eager little group gathered on Sunday, January 9. People with tournaments to prepare for, and people just out to have some fun, lucked in with perfect playing conditions except for a lawn like treacle. Lynette Evans and Sarah Widin teamed up to wrestle with it, also to play against Stuart Craig and Ken in a fourteen-point game. This is a short form of association croquet with only six hoops for each ball and hopefully a quick peg out. One and a half hours later Ken and Stuart were narrowly ahead 7-5. Play days are Thursday and Sunday 2pm for 2.30pm. Contact Sarah for other

A MUM was out walking with her 5-year-old daughter when the little girl picked something off the ground and started to put it into her mouth. Mum took the thing away from her daughter and asked her not to do that. “Why?” the girl asked. “Because it’s been on the ground, and you don’t know where it’s been. It’s dirty and it probably has germs,” mum said. At this point, the daughter looked at her mum with absolute admiration and asked: “Mum how do you know all of this stuff? You are so smart.” Mum thought quickly and replied: “All mums know this stuff. It’s on the mum test. You must know it or they don’t let you become a mum.” They walked along in silence for a few minutes but the daughter was evidently pondering this new information. “Oh, I get it!” she beamed. “So, if you don’t pass the test you have to be the dad.”

Down to size

DURING the pandemic, a six- and eight-year-old were being homeschooled by their mum. One day, the eight-year-old had a spelling bee with her sister. “Spell ‘elephant’,” the older one said.

“Let her spell small animals not big ones,” her mum said. The older sister paused, then said: “Spell ‘mosquito’”.

Making magic

A MAGICIAN worked on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. The audience was different each week, so the magician did the same tricks each week. However, there was a problem. The captain’s parrot saw the shows each week and began to understand how the magician did every trick. Once he understood, he started shouting out the secrets in the middle of the show: “Look, it’s not the same hat.” “Look, he is hiding the flowers under the table.” The magician was furious but couldn’t do anything. It was, after all, the captain’s parrot. One day, the ship had an accident and sank. The magician found himself with the parrot adrift on a piece of wood in the middle of the ocean. They stared at each other with hatred but did not utter a word. This went on for a day, then another, and another. Finally, after a week, the parrot said: “Okay, I give up. Where the heck is the boat?”
