The School's current Chaplain Mike Turner with former Chaplains Justin Evans and Peter Herbert at the recent 20th Celebration of Chaplaincy at Beerwah High

Hi Everyone

T

his week’s front page is about a 20th birthday breakfast held last week to celebrate the achievement of our community to have a chaplain at Beerwah High. In attendance were many of the people who have been involved with the program over the past two decades and have remained dedicated to their cause. The former GCNews owner / editor Pam Innes was a foundation member of the committee, and is still participating today - which is an amazing commitment. This year is my 10th in the editor’s chair and over that time I know we have included hundreds of stories about the fundraising efforts that have been undertaken. actually surprised but maybe more amazed to discover that over the past 20 years the committee have raised around $700,000.00. However when you consider how the Beerwah High Principal Graham Trevenen explains chaplaincy at school is about establishing values and providing support when needed, sometimes in times of great emotional distress and hardship, it is easy to understand why our community has been so generous to ensure that local students have access to this. For a relatively small community like us it is amazing how generous we are with supporting many causes, initiatives and activities that happen locally and let’s hope it continues.

20th birthday breaky! A special breakfast was held at Beerwah State High School last week which marked a huge milestone for the ‘Glasshouse Country Chaplaincy Committee’ celebrating 20 years of having a chaplain at Beerwah High. Around 80 people attended the breakfast which was catered by teacher Irene Lucke and her Year 12 Hospitality students – the food was amazing! Beerwah High was one of the first schools in Queensland to have a chaplain and they’ve been fortunate to have three chaplains over that time who has each been really devoted to the role and what they could achieve for the students and the school. Mike Turner (the current chaplain) has been at the school since 2007; Justin Evans was in the role 1996 – 2006; and Peter Herbert 1993 – 1996. Initially the role was only a part-time position of two days a week, but for the last 10 years it’s been a full-time service, and now the primary schools have been able to get a chappy too. While the committee recently received the Federal Funding for nearly two days a week, the majority still comes from donations from our local community – families, businesses, churches, service clubs and fundraising events. The committee have calculated that over the 20 years their fundraising efforts have raised around $700,000 for wages for the chaplain, camps, admin and events!

Pam Innes is a local church representative who has been an active member of the committee since its inception in 1993. Beerwah High Principal, Graham Trevenen congratulated the chaplaincy committee for their tremendous efforts over the last 20 years in keeping chaplaincy alive and well at Beerwah SHS and to the local community that has been so generous in their support. “Chaplaincy at school is not about religion – it is about establishing values and providing support when needed, sometimes in times of great emotional distress and hardship,” he said. “The support that past chaplains and our current chaplain, Mike Turner, has provided to students and families is beyond measure and a very important part of our school culture.” At the breakfast, he and fellow foundation member Tom Upson, shared how the concept for a school chaplain was first brought to the school. Since then chaplaincy has gone from strength to strength and over two decades provided support to thousands of students and hundreds of teachers and parents through pastoral care, student groups, camps and events. Thank you to all those in our community who have gotten behind this valuable service over the last 20 years! There will be more photos in ‘Out and About’ in the next edition of GCNews, February 26

Mooloolah local Alan O’Callaghan was recently nominated for ‘Citizen of the Year’ for both his work within his community, as well as his tireless efforts in drawing attention to the challenges people with disabilities face in their daily lives. Alan is well aware of how difficult life can be. Born with cerebral palsy, Alan spent the first five years of his life in callipers and during the 1950’s attended a school for students with disabilities. Then as an adult at the age of 29, Alan was involved in a serious car accident that left him wheelchair bound with severe injuries. In spite of these initial setbacks, Alan went on to achieve many of his goals. During International Year of the Disabled Person in 1981, Alan became involved in disability rights and was also instrumental in the establishment of the first ‘Disability Home Care’ scheme in Australia and served on the Committee for 16 years. Alan completed a Diploma in Community Work and a Graduate Diploma in Human Services Research at RMIT University and worked as a Regional Community Worker with the Council of Adult Education, moving on to become a Disability Support Officer, specialising in vocational training and then an Access and Integration Officer with Heidelberg City Council. In 1990 Alan married his sweetheart, Suzanne Tennison. Together they had a family - son Daniel and daughter Bridget.

Alan, Suzanne Daniel and Bridget O'Callaghan He continued to lobby strongly for disability issues and in 1996 was awarded the JagaJaga Australia Day Community Award for his services to the disabled. Alan and his family moved to the Mooloolah Valley in 1999 where Alan immersed himself in local community work. He has also been involved in a number of executive councils, advisory networks and associations including being the current President of the Mooloolah Valley Community Association. Alan has overseen many positive initiatives in Mooloolah. These include the opening of the Community Centre Op Shop, monthly community barbecues, Christmas parties, the welfare program (to assist needy families with clothing and furniture), and networking with other notfor-profit organisations to make positive changes happen on the Coast. He has been an inspiration to those around him and a valuable asset to the Mooloolah Community.

Sportsclub – use it or lose it

By Lea Parkes

Without increased dollars coming in the door, Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club will be closing was the message coming loud and clear from the club’s accountant at a recent management committee meeting. Club President Ken Fullerton said that if things don’t change then the club won’t be able to service their current debt and pay the ever increasing ongoing costs to run the club. “I don’t think most people realise how much it costs the club just to provide the sporting fields and dressing facilities for players, it is approximately $100,000.00 to cover the costs of water, electricity, insurance, grounds keeping staff, and fertilisers etc each year,” said Ken.

received from individual players or families which amount to approximately $4,500.00 pa.

tough economic climate over the past few years, said Ken.

Over the years, the affiliated clubs have assisted the sports club with funds where they have been able to, however clearly the annual costs are significantly greater than the income.

Most locals seem to assume that these costs are covered by Council – which sadly isn’t the case. While over the past three years Council has contributed $23,000.00 each year, this funding is not being continued.

"In the past, the sports club has been able to cover the rest of the costs through the funds generated via bar sales, functions, room hire, meals and pokies, but these days there just isn’t the dollars coming in so something’s got to give,” Ken said.

"With job uncertainty and families having less funds available to spend on non essential items we have seen a significant decrease in the dollars coming over the bar, a big drop in pokies spending and less people regularly eating out, which in the long-term can mean only one thing - and I know it is not an outcome that the 1,000 locals who play sports here want to see.

The committee have met with Cr Baberowski who has advised that while there are no emergency funds available, he is working with staff to see what other support Council may be able to provide.

“The word from our accountant is without more dollars coming in – the club isn’t sustainable and it is a case of ‘use it or lose it’, so we need to make sure the local community know just how serious the situation has become,” he said.

The sports club receives fees from the four affiliated clubs, Glasshouse Touch, Beerwah Glasshouse United Soccer Club, the Glasshouse District Cricket and the Tibros Netball Clubs each pay $500.00 each year.

"If the Club closes its doors, this means no soccer / cricket/ touch/ netball/ school sports/ etc. "Running the club is the same as running any other business in this current economic climate and we are certainly not alone in being hit by the

Along with that fee, a $6.60 membership fee is

“We ask the locals to think about how much poorer the community would be without the Sports Club and its’ sporting fields – and get behind our efforts to keep the sports club open,” Ken said. "We need to see more people at the Club House, either attending a function, hiring the rooms, having a meal on a Thursday or Friday night or a quiet drink. Also you don’t have to be a member of the sports club to visit." Let’s hope we can keep this great sporting facility open to our local community.

So she (and legions of others) will be pleased to hear that – according to the latest word from Telstra – many residents and businesses in Glass House Mountains can now experience faster internet speeds on their ADSL service following infrastructure upgrades in the local area. Telstra Country Wide Area General Manager for Sunshine Coast, Kris Carver, said Telstra was investing in local communities across the country to bring faster speeds and improved access to technology. "We've invested in improved infrastructure into Glass House Mountains," said Mr Carver. "We've listened to local residents who want more consistent access to higher internet speeds and the opportunity to use some of our premium products. "The existing infrastructure in the local exchange was struggling to meet the demand in Glass House Mountains for fast internet at certain times. We're very excited that this upgrade will allow many of our customers to have a more consistent speed experience when using their ADSL service, either at home or at work," Mr Carver said. According to Mr Carver, the upgrade will allow Telstra to offer more residents an ADSL service. Beerwah has also received an upgrade since Christmas enabling residents to now have a better experience online.

However, the Glass House upgrade won’t affect other towns in the area. “The infrastructure upgrade for the Glass House Mountains exchange only affects those living in The Glass House area,” said Mr Carver. When asked if he was happy with the performance of their system now that the new mobile phone tower is up and running at Jeffreys Road, Glass House Mountains, Mr Carver said that the installation of the new mobile base station has improved the mobile service in the surrounding area, and includes 4G which ensures residents have access to speeds similar to the CBD's of Sydney and Brisbane. “I have also spent several hours drive testing the network in the Glass House area and can confirm it is much improved. “There are a number of things people can do boost their mobile coverage - these include, using a 'Blue Tick' handset, using an external antenna or a car kit, and using a Telstra mobile smart antenna to increase indoor coverage. “If you are concerned about your service, you can contact Telstra BigPond on 13POND for further information,” said Mr Carver. You’ll be able to ask Mr Carver about these and other Telstra related topics at the community meeting being organised between Fisher MP Mal Brough’s office and that of the telecommunications Minister Malcolm Turnbull. To register your attendance, contact Mal’s office on 5444 4888 or email Cameron.Outridge@aph. gov.au

Unfortunately last week a vehicle that was parked at Mt Ngungun car park was broken into. One of the windows was smashed and personal belongings including credit cards were stolen. In this instance there was a witness to this offence and a registration number of the offenders’ vehicle and a description of the suspect/s was provided to Police. This information is invaluable when collating evidence to place before the Court. The credit card stolen was also used at a number of stores in the Caboolture area within an hour of this offence by utilising the pay and wave system for purchases under $100.00. In my humble opinion, not one of the better ideas that banks and credit companies have implemented. There is CCTV footage of a number of these transactions occurring and we are hopeful that the offender will be identified and apprehended in the future. In the meantime be vigilant when leaving your vehicle unattended, wherever that may be and if you are not a fan of the pay and wave system

Traffic enforcement The school year has recommenced and it is pleasing to report that there has been no reported instances relating to any traffic crashes or injuries around the school precincts. However, there are still instances of drivers disobeying the posted speed limit of 40km/h during 7.00am to 9.00am and 2.00pm to 4.00pm. The majority of these drivers are not hoons or deliberately disobeying the road rules. From the conversations with these drivers, the reasons provided are mainly inattention. This is one of the Fatal Five causes of serious traffic crashes. Please ensure that you obey the posted speed limits around school zones as nobody wishes to be involved in a traffic incident involving one of our precious children. Until next month keep safe.

Fantastic fibres

By Anne Snell

Lovely Landsborough is lucky to welcome, Renate Kirkpatrick, an amazing textile artist, writer and teacher, to our community. This talented lady is selftaught and her techniques are constantly evolving with her interests. She says, “…for as long as I can remember I’ve had the need for self-exploration and expression through tactile arts and crafts. …if it’s able to be: “Acquired, amassed and assembled, Cut, torn, snipped or shredded, Mashed, pulped, threaded or woven Stitched, folded, pleated or twisted, then, fastened, fused, pasted and somehow glued together, I’m in there.” Why? “It feels good, that’s all.” Born in Germany, she came to Australia as a young child and grew up in Wollongong. By 1974 Renate had settled on the Sunshine Coast with her husband Glenn and together they ran a Signwriting and Screen-printing business. Alongside this, her creative nature led her to pottery and then to a passion for handmade paper, both natural fibre and recycled. Renate mastered these techniques to such a level that by 1984 she was a full time papermaker and went on to exhibit her work in the Qld Museum with the Papermakers of Queensland. The beginning of the 21st century saw Renate shift her interest to fabric. She was attracted by the colours and textures, and the possibilities they presented. Starting with rag rugging, she went on to win the Best Entry Fibre Art Award at the Caloundra Arts and Crafts festival in 2001. This led to workshops and weekly classes at Spotlight Kawana for a number of years. Always interested in crochet, Renate has taken the form to a whole new level and shares her knowledge of traditional, Tunisian (tricot), Jacquard, and Crochenit, which is a technique

Renate in her showroom using a double ended hook. She holds workshops and classes across the coast. In recent years Renate’s freeform techniques have produced some truly unique pieces and provided a creative outlet for her students. She is particularly fond of this area. “There are no rules; it brings together a diverse collection of crafts limited only by your imagination,” she says. Renate has written four craft books. The first, ‘Crochet Techniques’ is an international standard and sold worldwide. This was followed by ‘Freeform Crochet and Beyond’ and then ‘Bring Colour to Crochet’, in which she shares 64 stitch patterns and many wonderful ways to incorporate colour and novelty to your piece. Her latest work published in 2012, ‘Textured Crochet Lace’, introduces lace patterns and uncommon stitches to enhance your crochet skills, confidence and pleasure. So if you think you would like to learn something new or brush up old skills, Renate’s classes might be just the thing for you. The classes are kept small and casual, so you can choose to come to one or 101 - whatever feels right for you. Team ‘Close Shaves’ get ready to rally Glass House Mountains local Steve Graves and his mate Everard Schenk of Caloundra are participating in the 2014 Sh#tbox Rally, Cancer Council’s biggest private fundraiser. This year, teams are aiming to raise $1.4 million as Sh#tbox Rally embarks on an arduous route crossing the Australian outback, driving from Perth to Darwin in seven days starting on Saturday, May 31 in a vehicle that is worth $1,000.00 or less. In the trip of a lifetime, the fellas will be joining 500 participants on a 4,000km drive starting in Perth, stopping by Meekatharra, Marble Bar and Broome before heading into The Kimberley, the Gibb River Road and the top end. Steve said their target is to raise a minimum of $4,000.00 before the rally gets underway. “So far we have raised about $1,000.00 and have other fundraising activities planned in the near future,” he said. www.gcnews.com.au

“We have a car which we are working on at present which is a stylish Silver ‘93 Subaru L series wagon with cassette player. “Our biggest cost, that we can see, is the cost of getting the car from Brisbane to Perth for the start of the rally. If there is anyone who could help us with this it would be great! “We both have different reasons for doing the rally but our goal is the same. It will be a challenge but, from speaking with people who have completed it in the past, it is a fantastic, tough and fun event,” Steve said. Matt Fiddes Martial Arts Schools An exciting new brand of Martial Arts is now taking Landsborough by storm, and transforming the lives of adults and youngsters alike. Hundreds of students throughout the Sunshine Coast are already benefiting from the remarkable Matt Fiddes Martial Arts Schools – and now there’s a regular class operating at Landsborough Sports Complex in Landsborough, with separate sections for adults, juniors and Mighty Matts. Youngsters just love the fun and games in their classes, and the chance to emulate exciting Martial Arts techniques, not just boring repetitive drills which other classes may serve up. And while they’re having fun, they’re learning valuable life skills - like concentration and first aid, how to say ‘No’ to bullying and drugs, how to have self-respect and show respect, and how these values are important in everyday life. For perhaps the first time in their lives, the youngsters are shown respect by their instructors who call them Sir or Ma’am, while they return

such courtesies, always with a little bow. The young members even have homework which includes getting parents to complete and sign a tick list, which certifies that their youngster is courteous and has completed certain tasks around the home, and done school homework. Parents all over the Sunshine Coast are calling it nothing short of a miracle, that suddenly they have a motivated, positive child in the home. School teachers, too, are noticing the improvement in these youngsters. Adult members of the class are just as enthusiastic. For some it’s become a fun and inspirational way to gain suppleness and tone, or lose weight. For others, the Matt Fiddes classes have put the spark back into their lives – providing them with motivation and self-belief, a disciplined Black Belt lifestyle, and the chance to meet like-minded adults. Landsborough School leader Taylah, said the school hasn’t been open for long but the feedback they’re getting from members is brilliant.

Patches and quilts magic

Glasshouse Country View Club On Wednesday, February 4 we had our first outing for the year. Quite a few of our crafty ladies arrived at the ‘Maleny Magic Patchwork & Quilts’ for morning tea and a chat together about quilting. We were treated to a lovely spread and a hot cuppa. After catching up about what we did over Christmas we were given a demonstration of how to make hexagons by Lyn Woolbank.

There were so many materials to choose from and so many great ideas that we were inspired to go home and get our machines out and start creating some quilts of our own. Beverley Perel showed us some easy to make quilts and had some interesting tips to make the job even easier. Brenda Sampson was kept busy at the counter with the many purchases being made. All in all it was a great sociable morning by the sound of the chatter being heard from behind the rows of beautiful fabrics. Thanks to Beverley, Lyn and Brenda for a great morning. Just a reminder that Cr Rick Baberowski will be our guest speaker at our March meeting. If you have any questions to put to him, please come along on Wednesday, March 19 at the Glasshouse Sports Club at 11.00 am. If you wish to come as a guest, please ring Rosalea on 5438 7910. Action in and out of the pool

The Glasshouse Country Christian College Secondary Swimming Carnival was full of colour, action and excitement – in and out of the water. For the first time, the Primary and Secondary Carnivals were split up and held on two separate days. This allowed more time for novelty races and the hotly contested ‘fashion of the pool’ award which went to Ella Mickelson in her colourful body stocking and tutu. Even without the primary children, Beerwah District Swimming Pool was still bustling with excited GCCC students. All students dressed in team colours and put their heart and soul into cheering on their sporting house. The rivalry was at an all-time high with war cries resounding regularly throughout the day. This year Zion (green) showed the most enthusiasm and won the spirit award. Competition was extremely close across most age groups with some champions being decided by just a few points. Students swam in divisions according to their efforts on trial day and it was a fantastic spectacle to see the regular close finishes. Sinai (red) gained an early lead on the points tally however, it was once again Ararat (blue) who emerged as well deserved house champions. The standard of swimming continues to improve as this year 37 new records were set in some outstanding swims. Congratulations to all students who managed to qualify to swim at the district carnival. In particular our age champions and record breakers. See page 34 for more photos

OPEN 77DAYS OPEN DAYS

Contributed by Tanya Hayden After a busy start to the year, the new Year 8 students at Beerwah State High School are settling in for a very big 2014. Looking fantastic in the new Junior Secondary uniform, and working and relaxing in the new Junior Secondary Precinct, the Year 8 students are developing a real sense of identity on campus. These students have already demonstrated their school spirit in the annual Cheer Cup and Swimming Carnival, and with a wealth of academic, sporting and cultural ability in the cohort, the future is looking very bright at Beerwah State High with students like these passing through the gates! On Thursday, February 20 the school will be holding an information night for the parents / caregivers of our Year 8 students. This will take place in the new junior secondary precinct in rooms L01 and LO2. The evening starts at 5.00pm and should conclude by 7.00pm. All are most welcome.

Landsborough State School's 2014 Student Leaders were inducted into their roles on February 10 in front of family, friends and the school community. The special investiture ceremony was chaired by the school's principal, Ms Kristy Walton, who congratulated the school leaders on attaining the positions of school captain, vice-captain, house captain, student council officer and class captain. In her opening address, Ms Walton spoke about the importance of leadership and affirmed the inductees as the right people for the job. The school follows a detailed process involving speeches, interviews with a selection panel, and then a student vote to select its student leaders. The proud parents of each student leader had an important role to play in the induction ceremony. They were invited onto the stage and given the honour of presenting the leadership badge and certificate to their child. Together, all student leaders then pledged their commitment to their new roles. This year's school captains are Jake Yates and Jenna Forsdike and vice captains are Edan Robertson and Amber Flood. Student council officer is Amy Vost. Sports house captains are Jenna Forsdike, Angus Russ, Bohdey Green, Spencer Doneman, Brodie Marshall and Mitchell Brock. Congratulations to this team of dedicated and passionate young leaders. Student Leaders - Front (L-R) Amber Flood, Jake Yates, principal Kristy Walton, Jenna Forsdike, Edan Robertson. Digging Potatoes The sky is the limit when it comes to combining images in Photoshop! This completed picture was made up of a simple tabletop setting of a piece of thin vinyl laid down in ripples to simulate waves, with some dirt and potatoes arranged on it so the camera lens saw it as an island. The background was white to make it easy to extract. DH posed as the farmer in front of a clear wall, extracted and sized to fit. The mountains and sky in the distance are recognisable as the Glasshouse Mountains, slid in behind. All it takes is a little imagination and a photo editing program. Anything can be anything! Just think outside the box.

Bunnings Caloundra saves our kitchen garden! Over summer, Morris House’s kitchen garden succumbed to the heat and wilted away. The kitchen garden was used for the cooking group, which meets every Thursday to cook up a storm. The list of home grown ingredients was looking pretty grim, until Bunnings Caloundra came to the rescue. They have generously donated a mixture of vegetables, herbs, seedlings, potting mix and assorted tools. Morris House would like to express the deepest gratitude for saving our kitchen garden. Stay tuned for the before and after photos.

Hats off to Woolies staff

Last week while still inside the shop, I had a spectacular nose plant after paying and picking up my groceries at Woolies. There were a number of contributing factors – distraction (I’d just been to a funeral), stupid shoes (high heels), carrying too many bags (who needs a trolley?) and I was in a hurry to get home. Possible fear of law suits aside – I was amazed at the number of people who ran (mid-transaction) to help me up, check that I was ok and look to see if it was something on the floor that caused me to fall. There was nothing too seriously hurt, a little bruising to me and my apples, but I certainly appreciated their care and attention. The shoes are going into retirement. The Woolies crew have always been a friendly bunch - so thanks for your help, and keep up the good work. Michelle Burton Peachester

CCTV

I note with interest your recent article on the proposed development of CCTV technology for Beerwah and Landsborough. While I agree that this type of initiative is long overdue, I do have some reservations about the process. As a tax payer I feel that there is a somewhat limited transparency in the promise of funding the said amount of $150,000, and the possibility of the proposal not being open to some form of public tender. Perhaps Mal Brough could address these concerns so that all local residents could feel somewhat confident that due diligence will apply through the entire project. Simon Watts Glass House Mountains

Big thanks to the Beerwah RSL

A huge thank-you to the Beerwah RSL for allowing me to celebrate my 18th birthday dinner there, a couple of weeks ago. The staff were amazing, they were super friendly and really helpful. And the food was delicious! It was perfectly cooked and served in good time. There was not one thing I wasn't happy with. It really made my night a brilliant one. If you are looking for a place for a great meal, the Beerwah RSL is the ideal place to go! Allana Lacey Beerwah

Re: Scary Maths Saga

Des (GCNews February 12), 0.04% is 0.038% expressed to two decimal places. The reading at Mauna Loa therefore is not automatically worrying. Additional information would be required before an informed opinion could be made, 0.038% is an average conc. for CO2 in the atmosphere. I am unaware of the sensitivity of the measuring equipment at Mauna Loa but the reading (to three decimal places) could have been anywhere from 0.035% to 0.044%. The problem remains that we can all cherry pick alleged scientific research to support our favoured position. No one is probably 100% correct. But from my soap box, there is increasing evidence that we are actually in the cooling cycle. We had a mini ice age in the 1800's and the ‘climate’ seemingly cycles over a 200-300 year period. We appear to be now heading down the curve, not up. K Pullen Landsborough 16

Ewen Maddock Dam

We regularly seem to pick up our copy of the Glasshouse Country News and find somebody pushing his or her own ideas re: Ewen Maddock Dam. What people need to understand is that the dam is the private property of SEQ Water, so they have the right to do what they consider the best for the dam. They do not have a lot of rules. They ask: 1. For dogs to be leashed and for people to clean up faeces. 2. Horses it seems should wear bags so no manure is left on the tracks. 3. People are to stick to the walking tracks provided. 4. Do not swim dogs or horses in the water, as this is the drinking water for Caloundra citizens. Are these rules too much to ask? No! But do people stick to them? No, No, No! Please, it is a privilege, not a right, to be allowed to use the dam area. What will happen if the area is closed to all because of a few? Then people will have something to whinge about. K. Johnson Mooloolah

Hospital car parking

In reply to the letter in GCNews (February 12) regarding the University Private Hospital. My husband was admitted for an operation as a public patient. He was discharged February 6. I was not informed he was being discharged and found out when I went to visit. I was not told of any special dietary needs or the fact he would need special clothing (he had bowel surgery). We asked the nurse for a wheelchair as he was on the first floor. She raced him down to the entrance, then told us we could get the car from the multi story car park and left him sitting on his own. The parking machine would not work and after several attempts an attendant came over and the parking fee had doubled as he said we had stayed longer (due to the faulty machine). Why is the car park next to the hospital not available? My husband has a disabled parking permit and is 75 years old. Also disabled parking in the multi story level is not free, unlike parking meters which allow free parking. I felt we were not treated with dignity. J. Doring Mooloolah

Family holidays At the PHC December meeting the approaching holiday season inspired an enjoyable session of reminiscing about the holidays of our childhood. Photos and anecdotes were shared, generating lots of laughter and nostalgia. The clear theme which emerged was that nobody ever went on expensive holidays. Resorts and cruises and expensive units at the Coast were unheard of! Most people went to visit their relatives, or the relatives came to visit them. City people, especially the children, loved visiting the family farm, and children who grew up on farms thought it was exciting to visit a city or any large town! Of course for many people, holidays were all about the beach, and that usually meant camping, or perhaps hiring a house and sharing with other families. Nessie Pratten recounted the following marvellous story: ‘Having lived at the seaside for many years in depression times, we thought we had seen everything, but this was new to us. Two farm families, neighbours in the hinterland for many years, decided they would rent a house for two weeks at the coast. They arrived in the farm utilities loaded up with children and luggage on the back. In those days it was legal (or at least not illegal) to carry passengers on the back of the farm truck, and nobody had two vehicles. As both families arrived together, there seemed to be heads going every which way. We wondered how they were going to fit into this tiny cottage. But as they were there for two weeks, we managed to work it out. The beds never got cold. ‘The young ones would be out early and off to the beach for the day, come home and have a nap before hitting the pictures or a dance until early morning. About 2.00am they would wander home and wake the fishermen up. After a cup of tea the older men would set off with their hurricane lamp and fishing gear for a morning’s fishing, come home with their catch, and by this time the young ones would be off to the beach for the day, so the beds would be vacant for the fishermen to have a camp. ‘I can say that this worked – they all departed at the end of the two weeks, happy after their holiday; and as the neighbours could say, they were very quiet, never a cross word, just happy laughter from everyone doing their own thing.’

Make your New Year’s Resolution to support your ageing loved ones When we celebrated our Christmas holidays and New Year gatherings with family and friends, many will have been surprised to notice a decline in the physical or mental health of elderly loved ones. These changes can be upsetting, but you are not alone. According to Seasons Group CEO Nick Loudon, there is a significant increase in the number of enquiries for care for ageing parents around the holiday season. “Being able to identify that it is time to access care is an important step in securing your loved one’s future and the start of the year is a great time to develop a New Year’s resolution with your loved ones to plan for their future care needs. Mr Loudon said this resolution may be difficult at first, but talking to loved ones about their plans for the future is extremely important and should include estate planning, wills, advance care plans and aged care options. “With ageing, mental and physical problems eventually will appear, but it's often up to family members to help recognise the warning signs that mum or dad might need to seek medical help,” Mr Loudon said. “It is a daunting responsibility to try to determine whether your loved ones can remain safely at home, how to evaluate the circumstances and what to do once the decision has been made.

“But one thing is certain; the Aged Care Sector in Australia faces a significant amount of change in 2014. Mr Loudon said the Australian aged care system is complex, so knowing the options, understanding the changes and planning ahead can make all the difference. “I urge relatives to act now to understand the impact of these changes, rather than leave it another year before they consider the health, welfare and living support needs of their elderly loved ones. “Knowing what to do, where to start, what is available and how much it costs, is important to make an informed decision about your future. According to Mr Loudon, Seasons Private Aged Care provides a surprisingly affordable alternative to government funded nursing home beds by allowing people to maintain personal independence in modern self-contained private residences, while enjoying a great community and having the convenience of full service Private Aged Care provided in their apartments if and when it is needed. “Moving to a Private Aged Care Community such as Seasons while still independent is a smart choice for couples and people who are currently living alone as well as people who are concerned

about future health needs and would like to avoid moving into a nursing home,” Mr Loudon said. To find out more about your options, visit www.seasonscare.com.au or contact Seasons on 1300 506 116. Mr Loudon suggests seven signs which may indicate that it is time to consider additional assistance or a move into supported living or aged care: 1. Condition of house: The house has become cluttered and the yard is in disarray. 2. Physical appearance: They no longer take care in dressing and might wear the same clothes for several days. 3. Mail and bills: Mail has piled up and is unorganised; bills are not up-to-date. 4. Eating habits: The refrigerator is empty or contains spoiled food; they are losing weight. 5. Change in decision-making: They occasionally forget to turn off a burner on the stove. 6. Physical decline: They are exhibiting physical problems such as hearing and eyesight loss, (dragging a foot or exhibiting difficulty getting out of a chair). 7. Increased confusion: They appear confused about time and place; questions are often repeated in a short time; there's a struggle to find the correct words.

Tough times need innovative thinking Over the past few years the tough real estate market and depressed house values, coupled with reduced cash assets caused by the ongoing global economic instability, have made it very difficult for older home owners to downsize their family homes and move into their retirement lifestyle. Tough times need innovative thinking and solutions and Twin Cedars Lifestyle Villas, at Beerburrum in the Sunshine Cost hinterland, has done just that. “For retirees wanting to buy into a quality village, we have put together an opportunity that lets them trade their house to purchase a Villa of their choice at Twin Cedars and receive up to $100,000 in cash for the difference between their house value and the Villa price,” said Karen Baele, Sales Manager at Twin Cedars. “It’s a win-win for both parties.” Twin Cedars Lifestyle Villas is an exclusive over 50’s security gated community on Steve Irwin Way in the Glass House Mountains with stunning views to Mt Tibrogargan. The one and two bedroom Villas are located on their own individual sites amongst beautiful gardens and walking tracks. The village has a modern community hall, swimming pool, spa, barbecue, gym, security access and caravan storage area. It’s close to major shopping centres, hospitals, entertainment precincts and other services in nearby Caloundra, Caboolture and Beerwah. “Living at Twin Cedars is all about lifestyle and we are pet friendly, too, so even your furry family members are welcome!” For more details go to: www. twincedars.com.au or contact Twin Cedars on 1300 307 659.

Coal fired pollution in Queensland is about to ramp up Stanwell Corporation is about to close its 385 mega-watt (MW) gas fired Swanbank power plant because it is being priced out of the market. Gas prices are surging as the massive LNG plant is near completion, the Swanbank gas fired generator is to close. Guess what, Tarong Power Station (700MW) will be re-opened later this year because of the available “cheap coal” and no more carbon tax (a pollution tax). So if you enjoy deep breathing go for it now, before Tarong pollutes our air again.

“The best thing you can do to reduce your power bill is to go solar” CEO of the Solar Council, John Grim.

Retirees

Just a small investment will give you peace of mind, knowing that you have planned for the future, (to the best of your ability) for your constantly rising energy bills. You should talk to Ian, he is old and grey and – like you – he is experienced; and if he cannot answer your solar questions, you win a prize! Test Ian and the team today!

Our Glass House Office is a testing site

The best thing that LOCALS can do is talk to an experienced LOCAL from the Impact Solar team at Glass House Mountains. LOCAL electricians, LOCAL knowledge, LOCAL care.

Local prices: Current electricity bill $150-$220 $280-$350 $500-$700

Solar system needed Small Medium Large

Cost $3275 $4429 $6400

(Other budget priced systems available)

As you can see, we are similar prices to the OUT OF TOWNERS. Once you purchase from an OUT OF TOWNER, you may have big trouble getting them back to fix a problem. But not with a LOCAL. You can come to Glass House and thump on the counter – that really scares us! So we will ensure that when you first phone we will act. We all live locally, shop locally and support locals – we care and will go that extra mile to offer the best service possible.

Phone Ty or Ian on 5438

Come and see our several different systems and invertors, all happily working away. Twenty four years experience has taught us to know and test the products we sell. We are driven by high quality at a fair price – not by old or poor quality at any old low price, as many others do. And we can tell you there are some mediocre quality systems out there. You deserve the best system to suit your budget, circumstances and future plans.

Australians to abandon the grid

Fixed Fee Intitial Consultation Available We have been established in Beerwah for approximately 28 years and offer services tailored for seniors including entry and exit into Retirement Villages, conveyancing, mortgages (including reverse mortgages) and family law. More particularly, we practice in the following areas:

Wills and Enduring Power of Attorney Having a current Will means that you decide what happens to your estate when you die. Reviewing your Will regularly is important to ensure that it accurately reflects your wishes and that it deals with all of your property. Having a current Enduring Power of Attorney allows someone you know and trust to make decisions for you in relation to your health and financial affairs if you lose capacity and are unable to do so yourself. Failure to have either of these important documents can cause your family great distress, be time consuming and expensive.

Estates If a loved one passes away we can assist you to administer their estate. This can involve collecting in assets and ensuring liabilities are paid. Grants of Probate are sometimes required by asset holders and we provide valuable advice to you in this regard. Executors of an estate have many obligations upon them. It is vital you are aware of these obligations if you are appointed as an Executor.

Advanced Health Directive Allows you to decide in advance the level and degree of intensity of medical care you wish to receive and gives guidance to medical professionals in relation to very specific circumstances if you are not able to participate in the decision making at the time.

Senior Moments Extra funding to help Glasshouse Country residents live at home longer

Under the Commonwealth Home and Community Care (HACC) program, older people in Glasshouse Country will get extra support and care services—such as cleaning, meals, nursing care and transport—to remain living independently at home. Member for Fisher Mal Brough said Glasshouse Country Care would receive an extra $574,000 in grants, taking their total federal funding to $1.7 million. “This extra funding will help expand existing services or create new ones in identified priority areas of need,” Mal said. “We know there is a real need for domestic assistance, social support, and transport, locally and that’s where the majority of funding will go.” According to Glasshouse Country Care Association Management Committee President Glenda McSwain, the funding will allow her organisation to continue its valuable work. “From little things, big things grow and this is what we’re able to do with continual funding received under the Commonwealth HACC program,” said Glenda. “This enables the organisation to continue to assist people in the community, allowing them to live in their own homes with the support we are able to give. “The work and support given by our manager Ann McQuay and her dedicated staff to local people is Mal Brough congratulates Ann highly regarded by all who receive McQuay (Manger) and Glenda their services,” she said. Have your say

The Newman Government is committed to addressing the issue of drug and alcohol related violence in our community. I'm therefore keen to hear from you. Do you think we should restrict alcohol consumption by imposing a 1.00am lockout at pubs and clubs and enforcing a 3.00am closing time? Or should we introduce tougher policing of our entertainment precincts and a zerotolerance approach to misbehaviour and violence? That could mean more police in our entertainment precincts at night and tougher penalties for those who engage in violent and antisocial behaviour. Please contact my office to have your say at glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au

Calling all aspiring young politicians

Applications are now open for young people aged between 15 and 25 years to join the 2014 YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament. Youth parliament gives young people valuable skills and experience to help prepare them to become future community leaders. The program includes debating, negotiating and leadership skills and allows them to see and learn first-hand what it is like to be a Parliamentarian by learning about the rules, writing bills and debating them in the Parliamentary chamber. Applications close on February 21 and information can be obtained by visiting www.ymcaqyp.org Young people considering an application can contact my office to discuss any questions they have so please email glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au.

Your chance to engage in road safety

The Queensland Government is calling on our community to find innovative ways to tackle Queensland’s road toll with $1.2 million in funding up for grabs. I encourage all community groups and schools in Glass House to consider applying for these grants in the next round of the Community Road Safety Grants program. The grants of up to $25,000 are available to groups which submit local ideas, adapted to local conditions, to target road safety issues that impact our area. The first round of the grants program last year received 76 applications – 41 were successful in sharing $815,000 of grant funding. All projects must be clearly focused on road safety initiatives, particularly focusing on driver distractions and road crash injury rehabilitation programs. Applications for funding close on Monday, March 10 and more information is available at www.tmr.qld.gov.au/roadsafetygrants.

The streetscape works in Simpson Street that have been completed so far look great and I am sure once complete will be a great boost for the local business community. In the meantime, please don’t forget the shops are open and to shop local and show your support.

Caloundra Community Awards Don’t forget that nominations are now open for my second annual Caloundra Community Awards. Do you know of an incredibly dedicated community volunteer or group? How about a business, young business and sport achiever? Then please nominate them and also have a think about the other categories: community event of the year, young achiever of the year and environmental contributor of the year. Last year’s inaugural awards were extremely successful and the talent of nominees was nothing short of outstanding. Nomination forms are available at my office at 1/118 Bulcock Street, Caloundra.

Calling all aspiring politicians Nominations have opened for the 2014 YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament. This is a great opportunity for young people in the Caloundra electorate to represent our community. The program is accredited with the Queensland Studies Authority as a Community Based Learning Unit, which means Year 11 or 12 students that participate in this program will receive a credit towards their senior certificate. It’s also a really good opportunity for our younger generation interested in having a say about their future to get involved in the decision-making progress and learn about the parliamentary process and propose new laws. Nominations close on February 21 and can be made online at www.ymcaqyp.org. Good luck.

Out and About

The Best Offer

Women’s social group The Glasshouse Country Women’s social group held their first event of the year with special guest Caroline Hutchinson from 92.7 Mix FM. Held at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, and with a great turnout of ladies, Caroline entertained the group with humorous stories from her life, media career and her 10 years presenting the popular Sunshine Coast radio show ‘Mark and Caroline for breakfast’.

Geoffrey Rush stars as a love-obsessed European art collector in ‘The Best Offer’ (La Migliore Offerta) an Italian film with English dialogue, in the Maleny Community Centre on Saturday, February 22 at 7.15pm (doors open for dinner at 6.00pm). Glimpses of masterpieces of art and sculpture and a fine musical score heighten the mystery and intrigue of this elegantly dark drama with a surprise ending. Also in the cast: Donald Sutherland as a malevolent bidder and Sylvia Hoeks as an elusive, agoraphobic heiress. Information: phone Tamara on 5429 6951 or website: malenyfilmsociety.info

This year on Saturday, March 2, you can get involved too by either joining a local cleanup site, organising your own local cleanup or donating to the campaign. Local cleanups include Beerburrum Forest (meet at Forestry depot, Red Road Beerburrum), Beerburrum Township (meet at Post Office), Glass House Mountains (Lookout), Beerwah (Corner Bells Creek Road and just off the Bruce Highway) Landsborough and Glenview. Environment Straighter passage of time

Stories of the Pumicestone Passage catchment In 2013, SEQ Catchments – the key regional body for natural resource management in south-east Queensland – gained ‘Healthy Country’ funding from the Queensland Government to support positive projects in the Pumicestone Passage. The projects are aimed to reduce nutrient and sediment run-off to the waterways through improved practices and strengthened integrity of the riparian and wetland systems. As an important part of this, SEQ Catchments is organising a community forum and celebration on May 2 from 9.00am until 4.00pm, at the Beerwah Community Hall (next to the Library). SEQ Catchments Community Partnerships Manager Susie Chapman is excited about the gathering. “It is an opportunity for the community of the Pumicestone Passage catchment to share colourful and insightful stories of how their catchment has been managed from Aboriginal times to the present,” she said. “SEQ Catchments is co-ordinating this event with a team that includes Traditional Custodians, agricultural and environmental historians and Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay Council staff. “It will hopefully be the first of a series of opportunities through different media for the land and water management history to be shared and documented. “By the telling of a selection of the many stories layered through this rich history, the Pumicestone catchment community will take a step further toward building empathy for catchment neighbours, and appreciation and knowledge of catchment management practices, past and present,” explained Susie. SEQ Catchments are currently developing the program for the day, and would like to know if your family or organisation would like to be involved in telling a significant story of catchment management in the Pumicestone. “The story may be told in narrative, pictures or song. It may be just a small story that paints a vivid picture in time. “It may be of farming, forestry, of conservation or fishing, or any other glimpse into how the land and waterways were managed and the people behind it.” If you are interested in participating, please contact Susie Chapman on 5459 4788 or 0400 910 682, or email her at SChapman@seqcatchments. com.au

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Wildlife and hot weather

Anyone who experienced the recent 40 degree plus temperatures would agree that life was not very comfortable. If you had trouble coming out of your air conditioning, spare a thought for the wildlife, especially those wearing fur coats and living in confined spaces. Nocturnal animals like possums and gliders are most vulnerable. When the going gets tough they will leave their homes in broad daylight making them targets for birds of prey, or cats and dogs. I have seen a Ringtail possum leave her drey (nest) in a tree on a 40 degree day and look for a shady spot at ground level. A mother with a baby, she readily accepted a hand fed piece of fruit probably for moisture! Recently, a Brushtail mother and baby possum left their nest box at 5.00pm instead of the usual 7.00pm and waited outside for cooler temperatures. In hot weather, birds need constant supplies of water to drink and in which to bathe. Water in shallow bird baths can heat very quickly and needs to be replaced on very hot days. Water baths should be placed in the shade but well out of reach of predatory animals. The best way to attract birdlife to your garden is to provide a regular supply of clean fresh water. Even our reptiles can be tempted to indulge in a little bathing on a hot day. I surprised this common tree snake lying comfortably across the water lilies in our pond! Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Would you like to learn more about the flora and fauna in your area, and meet new friends? For more information on GMAN activities and nursery sales please call Cliff (5438 7118) or Gwen (5493 0029). www.gman-inc.com.au

Grey Myrtle or Carrol Backhousia myrtifolia

The Grey Myrtle or Carrol is another of our local beauties. Its natural range is from Gladstone to Bega in SE NSW. It is commonly seen as a small tree to 10m but cutting grown nursery specimens are a bushy 3 to 7m. It is a very versatile plant with stunning flushes of new growth that looks best in full sun to semi shade. When crushed, its leaves give off a lovely fruity scent. It produces dense clusters of creamy flowers with lovely star shaped petals. A yearly prune can keep this shrub at any height you desire. Pruning will produce a much denser shrub which is ideal as a screen or windbreak. If you would like more information on this tree or any other native plants drop in and see Simon or Melissa at Go Green Rainforest Nursery, 2620 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview. Phone 5494 5980. Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Thelie Hobbs Suncoast Church Hinterland Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, and for those who know me, know I love bling as much as the next girl, but I am also rather fond of pearls. Pearls are elegant and beautiful…and they remind me of my dad, who was in his early years; a deep-sea pearl diver. You probably know how a pearl is formed. The oyster shell opens its shell to let food and water in, but sometimes a tiny piece of sand gets in. I imagine it must feel something like sand, or crumbs in your bed - very irritating! The oyster of course, has no hands to brush the irritating thing out, and so the only thing it can do is work on the piece of sand, until eventually one day, this piece of sand becomes a beautiful, smooth and shiny pearl. What begins as something annoying and irritating, eventually becomes a treasure. The same is true in life. ‘Pieces of sand’ work their way into our lives all too regularly and sometimes it’s all we can do to stay happy. It’s hard to keep a good attitude when

our circumstances are frustrating! The Bible says that in times like these, we can ask God for His grace. 2 Corinthians chapter 12 verse 9 reads: ‘My grace is enough; it’s all you need. My strength comes into its own in your weakness.’ Grace is what God gives us to get us through! Just as doctors give prescriptions so we can get well, and teachers give lessons so we can be educated, God gives grace so that we can get through. When we are patient and giving grace in difficult times, we have just found the pearl in the oyster; and managed to turn something annoying and irritating, into a treasure! In every difficult time, God has buried a treasure - we just have to look for the pearls!

Blood, Sweat & Cheers Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country

Landsborough Loggers love the ladies The Landsborough Loggers Cricket Club would like to remind all Glasshouse Country News readers that they will have their Women’s T20 game under lights at their first-class home ground (Tunnel Ridge Road) on Friday, February 28 from 5.30pm. “If you would like to have a run in one of the sides, feel free to show up from 5.30pm, with the game starting around 6.00pm,” said Daryl Cheeseman, organiser of the event. “All skill levels are welcome, so if you just want to have a go, or have played indoor, softball etc, then you’re more than welcome. “If the bug grabs you then we’ll have a chat in regards to our outdoor women’s cricket side for the 2014 - 15 season,” he said. The bar will be open and a barbeque will be fired up later in the evening. Check out the Facebook page ‘Sunshine Coast Womens Cricket’ for more details and for contacts. Continuing on with the theme, the Landsborough Loggers turn pink on March 1, as they raise awareness and funds for the McGrath Foundation. During the day, their home ground competition match against Wamuran at Tunnel Ridge Road, Landsborough has been designated a ‘Pink Stumps Cricket Day’.

Glasshouse Country Bowls Club

Contributed by Trevor Bertram Our monthly ‘Jackpot Triples’ was played last Wednesday and the Jackpot was not won. The winners of the day were Margaret Beasley, Brian Fogarty and Kevin Beasley with the Highest Margin of 31. The runners-up were a pairs game of Jack Timm and Di Hunt. The ‘lucky draw’ went to Leisa Craven, Bob Bloomer and Rob Farrell. Thursday morning ‘Open Pairs’ was won by Graham Nicholson and Ron Rix with two wins and 46 points. The runners-up were Margaret Beasley and Kerry Capern with 22 points in game two. Maurie Dawes and Jonathan Orr won the afternoon game with two wins and 42 points, with the runners-up, Don Tierney and Doug Grant-Mitchell winning game two with 28 points. Our Men’s and Ladies’ Super Challenge teams played Scarborough ‘at home’ last week with Glasshouse Ladies winning both rinks and the Men going down four rinks to one. We play Windsor ‘at home’ on Saturday, February 22. There will be no social bowls as there will be seven rinks of Super Challenge being played. Social bowls will resume on Saturday, March 1. Coming Events Monday, February 24 – Monthly ‘Open Two Bowl Triples’.

Emily McBride in training for the T20 game The McGrath Foundation raises money for breast cancer programs, with 100 Breast Care Nurses working in communities across the country – including our own local nurse Cathy Apelt. The Loggers invite anyone to come down on the day to support them and to help raise funds for this worthy cause. The Loggers are also hosting a Pink Stumps Charity Gala Dinner on the night of March 1.

Beerwah Ladies Golf Club

Contributed by Jenny Kelly We have had beautiful weather and this is reflected in the scores on Thursday. We had 76 players compete in a Single Stableord event, with the best score of the day going to Grace Ferguson who came in with 41 points to take out 1st Division. Grace accepted the trophy kindly donated by Josie Thistlethwaite, with the runner up being Cathy Stone on 35 points. Teresa Keast won 2nd Division with 39 points to take home a trophy sponsored by Marg Hunkin, followed by Margaret Goodger on 36 points. Division 3 winner was a rather happy Joan Swyny on 33 points. Joan won a trophy kindly donated by our life member Joan Harvey, on a count back from Margaret Hepburn, also on 33 points. Nearest to the Pin on 2 was Jill Hughes, Fay Barry on 5 and Andrea Campbell on the 16th. Division 1 winner on the 18th was Teresa Keast, while Joyce Turner took out Div. 2. The random Birdie hole on the 17th was a skinner and the ball rundown went to 32 points. The recently cored greens are coming back a treat and the fairways are really running so come out for a game. See you on the course, until then stay safe and good golfing.

Trivia Night

Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club is holding its Annual Trivia Night on Saturday, March 1, at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. Doors open at 7.00pm with the trivia and fun commencing at 7.30pm. For a great night out, grab a few friends and make up a team and join us on March 1. Bookings are essential please contact Jill Forster on 5493 0663 or mobile 0418 946 252.

Just for Laughs For the love of shoes After becoming very frustrated with the attitude of one of the shopkeepers, the young blonde declared, “well then, maybe I'll just go out and catch my own alligator and get a pair of alligator shoes for free!” The shopkeeper replied with a sly smile, “well little lady, why don't you go give it a try?” The blonde headed off to the swamp, determined to catch an alligator. Later in the day, the shopkeeper was driving home, and spotted the young woman standing waist deep in the

murky water, shotgun in hand. He saw a huge 9-foot gator swimming rapidly toward her. With lightning reflexes, the blond took aim, shot the creature and hauled it up onto the slippery bank. Nearby were seven more dead gators all lying belly up. The shopkeeper watched in amazement as the blond struggled with the gator. Then, rolling her eyes, she screamed in frustration… “damn it!! This one is barefoot too!” Submitted by Hugh Jones, Beerwah Week beginning 19/02/14

AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 You may find yourself caught in the cross hairs of a problem that emanates from your home, or more likely involves family issues. However, do not indulge in self doubt as it is only a temporary negative result of planetary energies setting the stage for you to shift focus to conserving and limiting your financial resources. PISCES February 20 – March 20 From February 19 the Sun enters your mystical sign. This opens a month of attention from others as they respond to your enthusiastic confidence. A great week to unravel hidden mysteries from your sub conscious to see a more visionary path. Many behind the scenes activities boost your self confidence now. ARIES March 21 – April 20 This week the Sun changes its sign into Pisces, meaning it is time for you to slow down for a few weeks. Take stock of where you have been and where you would like to go next. Mercury is still retrograde, therefore, together with the Moon moving into Scorpio, opportunities open up for recycling finances. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Just be careful that nervous energy may drown out logic this week. The Sun enters the soothing sign of Pisces, starting the month of emotional, sensitive energies with friends. You may find others have mysterious motives, intense desires, psychic awareness and you yourself, may have to fulfill family connections.

LIBRA September 23 – October 22 The Moon is in your sign mid week and so you will have a couple of congenial days with a smile upon your face! The end of the week sees both the Sun and Mercury in Pisces which should give you an ability to be very intuitive in the directions of your work, service or creative inspiration. Good for handling problems. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 As many planets are in water signs, including Mercury reversing into Pisces, you may be down on yourself, filled with doubt, worry or guilt. This may be as a result of receiving negative news. Prior to the weekend with the Moon in your sign, dreams are fluent for several nights. Set aside a weekend for shopping errands. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 As the Sun is changing signs into Pisces, and Mercury is moving backwards into the same sign, you may find the emphasis is on home and family. You could use this next two or three weeks to achieve constructive results. There may even be a romantic interlude prior to the weekend as you win others over with charm. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 A combination of various planets endow you with a confident, bright, initiative sense of ambition. All this will lead to swift action on good ideas and continued motivation to pursue your goals to achievement. The heavy dose of planetary energies in water signs sees fluctuations in your financial affairs for a while yet.

GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Do not even try this week to convince one whose mind is made up! Even solid opinions are likely to change over the next few weeks as the Sun changes sign into Pisces. Your best creative solutions will be those that are flexible and so it’s best to try anything once. Under Mercury retrograde promises can be exaggerated. CANCER June 22 – July 22 Communications are difficult under the full force of Mercury retrograde. Receiving monitory approval by credit is unlikely. A Scorpio Moon over the weekend creates intense feelings in your closest relationships, including those with children. However, giving and receiving may make everyone feel rich and secure. LEO July 23 – August 22 It’s best now to check travel plans, meeting times, and confirmation of appointments. This is because the Sun sign moves into Pisces and has the planet Mercury reversing so you cannot put much stock in what you hear or any promises that are made. Probably best if you clean things up around the house and garden. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 This is the week to back off on wild changes and steer a straight financial and working course. You may be drawn towards escape under the Piscean influence before the next few weeks. Just stay health focused and handle money matters, which is usually best in the morning. Don’t aggravate others resistance.
