Disclaimer

Hi Everyone

O

n the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, we were travelling back from a weekend away and were listening to a show on the ABC radio. Their theme for the day was about passion (no, not in a love is in the air kind of way) but the passion that drives people to succeed. So after we put together this week’s edition, it got me looking at the stories and reminded me just how many ‘passionate’ locals we have in Glass house Country and this week’s edition is full of them. We received the front page story about former local Laree, who will soon be travelling to Hollywood to compete in the World Championships of Performing Arts. Laree’s very proud mum Rhonda has organised a fundraising event at the Mooloolah Hall on the weekend – see page 21.

Cent Auction for Hollywood Quest Laree Gadenne, a former Glenview and Beerwah student has been selected to represent Australia on the World stage in July 2013 in Hollywood. The World Championships of Performing Arts is the only official global event for performers and entertainers both amateur and professional where competitors from over 50 countries showcase their talent to win gold, silver or bronze medals and a chance for a scholarship in Hollywood in acting and dance. Family and friends are helping to support Laree by running a cent auction on Saturday, June 22 at the Mooloolah Community Hall with doors opening at 1.00pm for a 1.30pm start. There will be a fabulous array of prizes up for grabs, plus lucky door prizes. There is $3.00 entry with a lovely afternoon tea, auction tickets are only $1.00. Laree has been a brilliant role model for our youth and has already been awarded Caloundra Australia Day Young Citizen and Cultural Award 2005 as well as Regional Young Achiever for Sunshine Coast with her picture on front of local White Pages phone book in 2006.

Now her ultimate goal would be to bring home a gold medal from the World Championships that would boost her career and open many doors in the world of the performing arts. Although Laree is now contracted in Sydney Photography by teaching dance through Pamela O’brien of Pro Sport in schools and Pamela O Photography is a Fitness First Dance Coordinator and teacher, she is home several times a year sometimes bringing her touring Dance Crew Karizmatik. They perform at many venues on the coast and she also has ran after school dance workshops at Glenview State School which still remains strong in her heart. Laree believes strongly that all children should have the chance to dance for fun and fitness and would love to see a program implemented throughout schools in Australia. She is working hard to make this a reality. Lizette Hunt who is the National Director in Australia and Hong Kong for WCOPA said Laree is set to become a part of the anticipated highly successful 2013 Australian team in Hollywood. So pop along on June 22 to win some great prizes while helping one of our talented young women take on the world. For any information or if you would like to help by prize donation please contact Rhonda on 0432 096 595.

Landsborough intersection upgrade A local Landsborough resident contacted Glasshouse Country News concerned about the lack of activity at the deadly accident blackspot of the Steve Irwin Way, Hardwood Road and Railway Street intersection. Regarding the intersection of Steve Irwin Way and Hardwood Road/Railway Street at Landsborough, after all the publicity last Sep/ Oct we were told that work would commence in January. Then we were told it would be mid-year. However it is now June and nothing has been done or even looks like being done at the intersection. I just thought you may be able to follow it up and advise your readers as to what is happening with the plans for this intersection. Ivan, Landsborough

Last year, local State Member Mark McArdle announced that he had been informed by the Regional Director for Main Roads that the site was a high priority. The Department would bring forward the planned works from the 2014/15 financial year and the intersection would have traffic lights installed in early 2013. This timeframe has stretched out, until now at the end of June, the works are about to begin. Mr McArdle confirmed that the works at the intersection at Landsborough is on track to commence in late June. “I have been advised by Transport and Main Roads (TMR) that the surveying and line-marking in preparation for construction is scheduled to commence on Monday, June 24, weather permitting, with construction commencing the following week, Monday, July 1,” Mr McArdle said. “I understand the importance of this project to the people of the hinterland and the thousands of people who pass through this intersection every month and I appreciate that TMR continue to ensure this project is a priority for the region. “I have a copy of the design for the intersection and will continue to monitor the construction process to ensure key milestones are delivered on time,” he said. Unfortunately, the project details are not publicly available through the TMR website. However, anyone interested in seeing the design can contact Mr McArdle at his Caloundra office.

Last October we brought you a story of how Palmview country musician Liam Brew was preparing for his second album in 2013. Well the wait is over, with the local legend releasing his newest album ‘Faster’ on Friday, June 28. The follow-up to his debut album ‘Wild Heart’, ‘Faster’ is set to become a hit as Liam takes his new songs on the road with fellow Toyota Star Maker Travis Collins, Luke Austen and Luke Dickens for the ‘Turn The Page Tour’, performing in NSW and QLD. Of the upcoming release, Liam says, “It typifies who and what I am as an artist and for the first time features some of my own songs which I’m really excited about. I’m happy that I can now step aside and let the album do the talking. It’s a diverse bunch of songs but I think it’s a great description of the type of stuff I grew up on and the stuff I love playing as an artist, so I hope that shows in the record when people hear it.” For a sneak peek at the single from the album ‘She’s Gone’ – and details of the tour – check out www.liambrew.com.au Or head to Liam’s Facebook page www. facebook.com/liambrewmusic

New support group to start

Free music and magazines at the library

Mooloolah local Melanie Lindsay loves being a mum to her gorgeous two-yearold son Byron, but acknowledges that parenting when your partner works away from home has its own set of challenges. For many Sunshine Coast families, the change in our local business economy has meant that one partner has had to take a job away from the area, in a range of industries including mining, construction, fishing, sales or the armed services. Melanie’s partner Peter has been working in the mines since Byron was three-weeks-old. While she knows she has become much more self reliant and independent when tackling running the household, she says that doing it on your own can be emotionally tough. Having tried to find a local support group without any success, she has now put the wheels in motion to set up a support group – called Happy Families – for mums and their families whose partners work away. Starting June 25, they will meet each week on a Tuesday at the Caloundra Community Centre from 10.00am to 12.00noon. The group will provide an opportunity for families who face common issues to meet up in a positive and fun environment for the parents to share their experiences and support each other and a play area for the kids to enjoy. Melanie (who is studying in the Community and Family Services area) is undertaking a work placement at the Community Centre and when

Two new and exciting products providing access to free music and magazines are just the latest benefits of being a member of your local library. Community Programs Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay said Sunshine Coast Council is very excited to launch these two new products. “The first product, Freegal Music, is a popular global service that offers library customers free access to licensed songs,” Cr McKay said. “People can choose from an extensive catalog of over 7 million songs and music videos. “This service delivers great music for free and offers compatibility with lots of devices and is very simple to use.” Councillor McKay said the region’s avid magazine readers will also be able to access Zinio Digital Magazines. “By accessing council’s library website, library customers are able to simply download over 300 titles direct into a PC or a wide range of mobile devices. “These products are easy to use, however we have included user guides and ‘how to’ videos on eLibrary. For those library members who need more assistance, the friendly staff at their local libraries will be very happy to help. To find out more about eMusic and eMagazines, contact your local library on 1300 Library or visit council’s library website.

Melanie Lindsay playing with son Byron she suggested to the staff for the need for this type of support group, they fully backed her proposal and encouraged her to set the group up. A Facebook page has already been set up at Happy Families Support Group so if you would like to know more you can check it out or you can give the Community Centre a call on 5491 4000 and speak to either Kim or Lisa.

Beerwah State School celebrates 125 Years of Education On Saturday, June 8, the sounds of the old school bell rang out to signal that the Beerwah State School 125th Anniversary was officially underway.

Beerwah State School extended a warm welcome to many past and present pupils, staff members, parents / carers and community members to the milestone event of the 125th Anniversary of the school. In addition to the 510 current students and staff, some 165 past students and staff signed the special pages which will soon become the 125th Anniversary visitors’ book. Special guests Mr Mark McArdle MP Minister for Energy and Water Supply, Councillor Ric Baberowski, past Principals, Owen Marks and Max Butler and Ms Toni Betts great granddaughter of the first Principal Mr Verrent, joined in the celebrations.

At the official ceremony, School Captain Aidan Goldsborough and Student Council Chair Jessica Hughes were the first to provide their reflections on what the 125th Anniversary of the school meant to them. They also reflected on what the future might hold for them and what Beerwah State School might be like in another 25 years’ time. Ms Toni Betts congratulated the school on its journey since her great grandfather Mr Verrent opened the school in 1888. Her address was followed by Mr McArdle MP who called on the crowd to cheer as they heard their decade called when they attended the school. It was clear that the 1970’s pupils were by far the loudest which pleased Mr Butler who was the Principal at the school from 1975 to 1977. However, there was a great cheer as Mr McArdle read out the names of several students who

Mrs Margaret Scholes, life member of the Beerwah State School P&C, then provided an account of what it meant to be involved at school as a parent. Mr Owen Marks who was the Principal during the centenary celebrations then spoke of the changes that had occurred during his time at the school and marvelled at the development that had occurred since. Mr Don Elks, Mrs Dorothy Harrison (nee Dot Weyer), both pupils in the 1930’s and Michael Owen 5th Prep student 5th Generation of Roy and Owen family at Beerwah State School school, joined with Ms Toni Betts great granddaughter of founding Principal to cut the anniversary cake. Amy Rosenthal and past teachers Sharon Rosenthal and Scott McKay look over one of the citroens thanked Sue Richards, Beerwah Big Night out /125th Anniversary co-ordinator and all the other parents, community members and staff who had helped put the event together. The formal ceremony over, it was time for an afternoon of celebration, where 125 years of excellence in educational service to the community of Beerwah was on display for people to share. There were plenty of examples of the myriad of academic, cultural, sporting and social experiences that had developed generations of students’ of the school. An old classroom had been set up in the corner of the Centenary Hall with the old forms which sat five to seven pupils in front of long desks with holes for inkwells and slates. This contrasted with the IPADS and digital displays which presented photographs and movies of the school’s history. Other displays were located in the new state of the art library and around the classrooms which were all well received. These displays served as a reminder of all the work done and all the achievements made over the years. Although in the mid-afternoon the weather looked as though it would spoil the party, it stayed dry long enough for the Big Night Out to continue right through to the Woodlands sponsored

Many people helped to make the occasion a success and each and every one of them is thanked for getting involved. “A big thankyou goes to all the staff and volunteers who helped with this special event,” Principal Eric Greentree said, “Especially those who returned to assist even though their children have long since graduated from our school. We are grateful and thankful that you would choose to give your time to help us.” Two special mementoes have been developed for this occasion. Mr Shannon Ganley Year 7 teacher painted a new mural whilst Mr Christopher Casey crafted the 125th anniversary plaque out of wood. The current students, staff, parents and carers, would like to thank all those who have come before us and congratulate them all on the contribution that they made to the foundations, upon which the school stands today. All those that attended and who took the opportunity to celebrate on Saturday enjoyed the displays and wonderful conversations with friends, family and fellow classmates, recalling fond and funny memories of their time at Beerwah State School.

Local artist attends indigenous conference Local indigenous artist De GreerYindimincarlie recently returned from the Inaugural World Indigenous Network conference (WIN) in Darwin.

Changes to election signage rules With a Federal election looming, a topic of community attention always revolves about election signage. The Sunshine Coast Council is set to bring in changed election signage rules at the Ordinary Meeting to be held this Thursday, June 20 at Tewantin.

The World Indigenous Network (WIN) is an international alliance established by Australia at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development in Brazil in 2012. Melissa George, Co-Chair of the WIN National Advisory Group explains that as custodians of knowledge and expertise, the World Indigenous Network brings together Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities land and sea managers to share stories, knowledge, cultural experiences and ideas to better manage ecosystems, protect the environment and support sustainable livelihoods. “The Network will increase the profile of Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities land and sea managers around the world. It is also about getting people to recognise that Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities attachment to country, their environment is underpinned by cultural obligation and responsibility when undertaking environmental protection and conservation, which is essentially for the world’s good,” said Ms George. The conference was attended by delegates from around 60 countries, and included world-renown speakers such as Professor James Anaya, UN special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and Ms Maria Augusta Assirati, Deputy President, National Foundation for Indigenous

Following a Councillor workshop on the issue in May, amendments to Local Law No 1 and Subordinate Local Law No 1 will be taken to Council for approval.

Dee with some of her artwork at the conference Peoples (FUNAI), Brazil. De, who owns and runs Yindi Artz, was asked to attend as a featured community artist at the conference. Not only was she showcasing her Yindi Artz products, but she also painted an oar to be a part of the Magic Canoe art installation. De said that her oar represented people from all over the world coming together as one, striving together to a similar goal. “I was asked personally if my oar could be taken back to Canberra to be a part of a TEDx (Technology, Entertainment, Design) exhibition in September,” she said. While at the conference, De was also asked to do an interview for National Indigenous radio.

These changes will only have a six day community consultation period, meaning that local Glasshouse Country residents will have to be quick if they wish to have their say. After the meeting, the documents will be available for viewing on the Council website and at Council Customer Service centres. One change refers to the definition of an election sign, which it gives as ‘a device that is able, or is intended, to influence a person about voting at an election’. The other changes relate to such issues as when signage does or does not require Council approval, the allowable size, number and location of election signage, the timing of when signage can be erected, and documentation accompanying any applications for signage.

Peachester’s half of the takings will go to the Fitula Hospital for women in Addis Ababa in Ethopia. Our biggest morning tea on June 3 was disappointing with only 27 people attending. A display of china tea sets etc was of interest with Rob Morris’s great grandmother’s tea pot dated back to 1850 on display. An unbelievable spread was provided and what was left was sold to the visitors. Guest speaker Orianna from the Cancer Council was very interesting and informative. A big thank you to all who donated prizes for the rolling raffle, $600.00 was raised. A huge thank you to the men folk who help with the setting up of the tables etc. Also thanks to the ladies who help us out. Their help is really appreciated. Don’t forget the markets on Saturday, June 29 from 11.00am – 4.00pm. God Bless.

At the Glasshouse Mountains Coffee and Tea Merchants on Steve Irwin Way they have recently had to expand their tranquil garden setting to make room for all their regular customers. Steve Moon and his mum Helen have a great eye for detail and have managed to expand the garden and seating without disrupting the perfect environment for hiding out, or taking time out and relaxing. They have also added an extra undercover seating area at the back of the garden which doubles as a stage area for their Sunday afternoon live music performances.

Matilda Servo on Steve Irwin Way are having a monthly prize draw for customers that spend $20.00 or more in-store on groceries or hot food (excludes fuel and cigarettes). Just put your receipt into the box and you may win a $50.00 gift voucher from Bunnings, Wish, Coles Myer or Harvey Norman. They will be giving away one gift card each month from now until the end of October. The first draw takes place on June 30 - so make sure you get your entry in. School News You’re never too young to support the cause

Gabriella Goddard is not quite old enough to go to school yet, but she was old enough to participate in Glasshouse Country Christian College’s Biggest Morning Tea on Thursday, June 13. The morning tea was organised by GCCC’s Kitchen Garden Coordinator, Mandy Ward, but she had an army of parent and volunteer helpers cooking for the cause. Tables were piled high with goodies of every description and calorie count. There were towers of macaroons and cupcakes, platters of chocolate slices and caramel tarts, and plates of croissants, savouries and cakes. Mandy Ward first began hosting the morning tea four years ago. “So many people have been affected by cancer, I thought this was a good way we could all help,” she said. Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is an initiative of the Cancer Council. One in two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85 so every dollar raised helps fund research, preventions programs and support services. Gabriella Goddard is more than happy to support a good cause - especially when it involves chocolate

Glasshouse Toastmasters and Glenview Primary School Contributed by Martine Goedhart The Glasshouse Country Toastmasters recently finished an eight week Youth Leadership Course at the Glenview Primary School. At the graduation night they all surprised their family and friends with the progress they’d made in the eight weeks of the course. All the speeches were written by the students themselves and were of excellent quality. They were either informative, humorous or brought a message to the audience. Students who did not give a speech on the night took on a role as Chairman, Vice Chairman (introducing the speakers) Table Topic Master or Evaluator. They all did a terrific job. Every year the Youth Leadership Co-ordinators are amazed how quickly (with a bit of guidance) the children discover their hidden talents. There was no hesitation to come to the lectern and complete their task, and no obvious nerves. We’d like to thank the Glenview School for offering

this course to their students, for the last seven years they’ve made it part if their curriculum. A special thanks to Bianca Marek, Year 7 teacher, for the extra support given to the students during the course. To the class of 2013, we wish you all the best in years to come, you're all winners. If you’d like to know more about Toastmasters, why not give Kerry or Renate a call? You can reach Kerry on 5494 0161 or Renate on 5439 0725.

Antique cars on display at Glenview State School Recently the students and teachers of Glenview State School were lucky enough to have a visit from the Sunshine Coast Antique Car Club who were celebrating their 50th Anniversary. The spectacular cavalcade of antique cars set out every day from June 2 - 9, visiting various Sunshine Coast tourist attractions and taking in the many scenic drives the coast has to offer. While travelling from Mooloolah Valley for a lunch stop at the Ettamogah Pub, the large group of some 50 cars proudly displayed their amazing restored cars for some of our younger generation to learn about and appreciate.

The children from Prep to Year 7 were fascinated to see what cars from ‘the olden days’ looked like. They seemed particularly interested in the quirky horns! Erik Larsen is the owner of the 1908 Alldays and Onions car pictured. This was the oldest car displayed on the day. Made in Birmingham this very rare car has origins dating back to the 1900’s.

Mighty helpful

Business feature

The Glasshouse Mountains Mitre 10 Co-op opened at their current site at 5 Co-op Lane in 1972 as a rural store. And they’ve been an important and well respected part of the local community ever since. In response to locals and tradies looking for an ever increasing variety of products over the years, they have been able to increase their range beyond that of traditional hardware items, and now stock a huge range of everything you could need for your home and garden. And did you know they even have camping gear, automotive paints and supplies, and electrical items? The Glasshouse Mountains Mitre 10 staff are ‘Mighty Helpful’ and are known as the friendliest and most helpful in the region. They go that extra mile to form a good relationship with all their customers. They have a range of skills and experience to assist with any query or purchase, and are happy to help with items not in stock – they endeavour to source it for you as soon as possible. The store is easy to find – just on the other side of the railway line at Glass House Mountains – and parking is a breeze. Loading of bulky or large items is not a problem, as they have plenty of space for you to manoeuvre a car, trailer or truck. And the staff are more than happy to help you load up. Shopping locally not only saves you time and petrol money, but you are also

Mitre 10 staff Warren, Nicola, Marty and Jake supporting a local business, employing local people and keeping your money flowing through our local community.

Speed sign

My father who is 84, doesn’t drive fast or break the speed limit. He was booked the other day for doing 75 klm along the section of road as you come over the overpass and go through the roundabout, heading towards the lights and intersection of Peachester Road. I have seen so many people being fined for that section of road as people come off Steve Irwin way at 80 klm and then once through the roundabout, the road opens up to a clear way without homes etc. I wonder how many other people’s friends and family have been booked there? It leaves a bad taste in people’s mouths about Beerwah especially when they don’t realize it is a 60 klm zone. I am going to appeal to main roads to have the 60 klm sign shifted further along the road. People are coming through the roundabout concentrating on merging into to one lane and then completely miss the existing sign. It needs to be up the road another 10 metres from the merged lanes. Participate in a study of attitudes to asylum seekers

I am a local Beerwah resident and I am currently studying psychology by distance education at Charles Sturt University, Bathurst. For my honours dissertation I am conducting research into attitudes to asylum seekers in Australia and would really appreciate your help. Asylum seekers are a topical and ongoing issue and there is a range of opinions about them and how best to respond to them. To shed some light on this I have an online questionnaire with some questions about attitudes to asylum seekers, about approaching issues generally, about general political views, and some demographic information. It only takes about 15 minutes to complete and is located at https://www. surveymonkey.com/s/ASAttitudes Please be assured that all responses are totally anonymous and there is no way anyone can be identified. You can access the survey by typing the link into your web browser. Or if you would like me to send you the link by email, just send a request to cgenn@ bigpond.com To be useful I need a large number of people to contribute, people from all walks of life to make it really representative of Australian attitudes. The more participants I have the better, but you do have to be an adult (i.e. at least 18) and to have lived in Australia for at least one year. Many thanks for taking the time to fill this out. Celia Genn Beerwah

Hazard ahead

There probably are some happy ratepayers out there as a result of Cr McKay going to Tasmania to test out the potential for a zip-line in the hinterland. I can guarantee that there would be more happy ratepayers in Mooloolah Valley if Cr McKay and Cr Baberowski were to make a joint statement about Council’s future plans to rehabilitate Glenview Road. Enough is enough! Workers recently did some patchwork on the road and then erected ‘Road Hazard’ signs. Are they stating the obvious or are they abrogating legal responsibility on behalf of the Council? Brad Boustead Glenview

News in Brief Studio doors are now open

After a few minor delays, the much awaited Glasshouse Arts Trail is finally opening its doors for four consecutive weekends beginning Saturday, June 22, in time for the Queensland and NSW school holidays. Ten artists have collaborated, some in joint studios, to make this a very compact and accessible Arts Trail. The diversity of art mediums, styles and subjects Artwork by Sandra Price promises you a very interesting and rewarding experience where you will see artists at work in their personal creative space. They’ll be very happy to share with you some of the things that inspire them to follow their passion with their chosen art. Brochures are available from the Glasshouse Visitors Information Centre and from local businesses that have kindly sponsored the artists or you can check out their blog http://glasshousecountryartstrail.com/ and on Neville Field’s website www. artatglasshouse.com

Police Beat

with Senior Sergeant Bruce Duck

Some concerning information was brought to the attention of Police recently in relation to a member of the public posting letters to all the residents within a certain street of the Beerwah area; the allegations were of a serious nature. Such actions could warrant criminal prosecution against the person undertaking this activity. Where sufficient evidence can be gathered, police could take action. Every individual is entitled to a presumption of innocence, and in this particular instance the information was incorrect.

Crime Stats

For the month of May there were a total of three homes and one business which were broken into. Two of these occurred in the GHM area and two within Beerwah. One of these offences has since been solved. There were also three motor vehicles which were taken without the owner’s permission. All three of these were from the GHM area, unfortunately, two of them were left unlocked and the other had the keys left in the ignition. The local car parks for the National Parks and walking tracks have also been a favourite with the criminal aspect of our community. Over the past month 14 vehicles have been entered and property removed. This number could arguably have been less if seven of those vehicles had been properly secured. As the saying goes ‘Lock it or Lose it’. At all times please ensure that you do all that is possible to secure your property in an effort to deter crime. If you have any information that could assist police to identify the offenders, please contact Beerwah police or crime stoppers on 1300 333 000.

Traffic Stats

There were 14 traffic crashes which Police investigated over the past month. Of these thankfully only four involved injury to any person. Police also arrested eight drink drivers for this period. Please pay attention when you are driving, watch your speed, take your time, wear a seat belt and do not drink and then drive. Remember that you are responsible for the actions that you take whilst behind the wheel. Police will be out in force again this month, targeting speeding, failing to stop at stop signs and drink driving. Until next month, keep safe.

Catch them if you can! Posing children for photos is far from easy. So, try taking a different approach and have your camera ready to take those shots that are already there. The appeal of this one is the obvious curiosity of the young child. Multiple opportunities to make memories occur during a child’s day and modern cameras allow the observant photographer to capture the moment and hold it forever.

Tourism Talks

with Jayne Wilson

Senior Tourism Consultant Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre Sadly we bid farewell to one of our local Justice of the Peace volunteers Rod Ahern. Rod has been volunteering his time every Monday morning and Thursday afternoon at the Glasshouse Information Centre for the past 18 months. We would like to thank Rod for his valuable time and wish him all the best in his new chapter and adventure in life. Please note that we have a JP available Monday - Friday at various times, please don’t hesitate to contact us for more information. Recently Tourism Events Queensland was in the Glasshouse Mountains Region filming for an upcoming campaign called ‘Queensland on YouTube’. Jim and Natalie popped into the Visitor Information Centre to take some images and video of the displays and touchscreens. They also spent some time at the lookout and at other various places around the Mountains as well as on the Coast. Big thanks to the volunteers and young local family who came into the centre to be our ‘extras’ for the afternoon. Watch this space for links to the end result. On May 30 the Visitor Information Centre played host to a group of 30 students from St

Columban’s College in Caboolture. The group of Year 11 and 12 students are studying Tourism and were looking for general information on the area, the types of visitors we get through the centre, and national parks and Indigenous Tourism. The students were a very well mannered bunch and we hope to see them again in the future. Do you operate a farm in the area and are looking for workers? We are now getting a constant stream of backpackers to the area looking for Farm Work. As a result of operational changes, the Glasshouse Mountains Visitor Centre opening hours have been amended to meet the ' minimum standards under the Visit Queensland Accreditation Policy Guidelines. The new Visitor Information Centre hours took effect on June 10. Visitor Centre Hours are as follows: 9.00am to 4.00pm Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 3.00pm Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. Please don’t hesitate to contact the centre on 5438 7220 during these opening times if you have any further enquiries.

The Glass House Mountains Visitor Information centre is located at Settler's Rotary Park, Reed Street, Glass House Mountains

Hinterland eco-tourism project for discussion at community forum In 2009 the Sunshine Coast Hinterland NatureBased Tourism Plan was formed by the State Government. It incorporated four pillars: upgrading the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve; walking trails in Glass House Mountains; tourism opportunities in Conondale National Park; and a proposed elevated ‘Zip Line’ canopy tour ecotourism concept over the top of Obi Obi Valley. forum in Montville. The concept involves a series of cables connected to selected large trees in the Valley, enabling www.gcnews.com.au

small guided tours to travel between the trees at heights varying between two and 100 metres, council spokeswoman for the government project and divisional councillor for the area, Jenny McKay said. “The Zip Line experience is an exciting ecotourism adventure for all ages to enjoy the rainforest from above,” Cr McKay said. “Guests are fitted into separate harnesses to travel along the cable above the canopy. “The cable is connected to ‘cloud stations’

which can provide guests with cultural and environmental information about the area. “One of the best things about the system is that is does not involve installing pylons or other infrastructure on the ground inside the national park.” The community forum which will include discussion on the Zip Line project will be held on Tuesday, June 25 at Montville Village Hall at 6.30pm (rsvp gwyn.bruce@sunshinecoast.qld. gov.au or 5441 8137). Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Father Kevin Smith Caloundra Catholic Community The drive from Landsborough up to the Blackall Range is always breath taking. Whatever the weather the views are magnificent. The country mostly appears lush and green, bursting with growth. Usually on winter days with the air cool and crisp, the views back to the coast are vividly clear. I feel as if I could reach out and touch that vast stretch of coastline behind me and even re arrange those tall buildings that don’t look in any way imposing from the top of the Range. More recently driving around these climbing and twisting roads has not been amidst the usual crisp chill of winter but rather through the cloud and mist of unseasonal heavy rain. The experience brings a different mood which is just as fascinating and even beautiful in its own way. What is not so pleasant is the driving itself. Under these conditions there is no way one can observe the view even if there was one to enjoy. The heavy cloud slows down the traffic and the visibility is dangerously low. We are concerned for vehicles that are possibly in front and worried about any cars that are behind and it all makes the travelling unnerving. We can miss the turn

we know so well and the road on which we know every bump is now foreign and strange. Life too and especially the life of faith will throw us into very similar conditions. Faith and belief does not spare us from those fearful times when the paths seem strange and very unfamiliar. At such times we are promised that with keen eyes and some extra concentration the companionship of Christ can indeed be found. We may have to slow down and be more aware of those people who love us dearly and will listen to us. The mist and cloud, challenges and hurts can make the travel very frightening so let’s travel according to the conditions - slow down, look more keenly for those familiar signs of God’s love and compassion. They will be the people who will welcome us and be a sign and reminder of God’s welcome and love. God bless you in all your journeys.

Beerwah State School 125 Year Celebrations Celebrations for the 125th Anniversary of the Beerwah State School were held on Saturday, June 8. The impressive program ran smoothly thanks to careful planning, and decades of past students, teachers and their families flocked to celebrate this milestone. I was delighted to participate in the official ceremony by ‘calling the roll’ for students, decade by decade and in front of a packed hall. This was a fun exercise with an ex-Beerwah student from the early 1930’s present. Congratulations to Principal Eric Greentree and his large team of supporters. Not only was this event a great day out, but it was great to see peoples’ faces light-up when reunited with people from their past.

The Queensland Plan The Queensland Plan is a plan for Queenslanders, by Queenslanders. It is the first of its kind in scope and scale for our state, and will provide a 30 year vision for Queensland. It is now our opportunity as a community to work together and make sure that the Glasshouse Region is well represented in The Queensland Plan. I encourage community members to complete the six question survey, which can be found at www.qld.gov.au/queenslandplan, alternatively call my office and I would be happy to mail a copy to you. Two information sessions will be held by me on Friday, June 28. The first at the CCSA Hall on Nutley Street at Caloundra from 9.00am – 10.30am and the second at the Beerwah Community Hall from 1.30 – 3.00pm. I encourage you to come along to one of these sessions to learn more about the process, or alternatively please do not hesitate to contact my office on 5491 2780 or email Caloundra@parliament.qld.gov.au

Andrew Powell State member for Glass House P: 5435 2013 Electricity prices and impacts for solar panels

There has been a lot of talk in the media and amongst the community speculating on what will be done to understand the impacts of the Solar Bonus Scheme, whereby people without solar are paying for those that do. The LNP Government is extremely conscious of the impact of higher power prices on Queenslanders but our hands are tied by a national regulatory system. What we do know is things like the carbon tax, the renewable energy targets and the solar feed in tariff are driving the power prices we are seeing. It is our responsibility as a Government to try and address these increases and find ways to minimise the hurt being felt by families in meeting their weekly cost of living expenses. The Premier has clearly stated that those who invested in solar panels and remain eligible under the program guidelines will still receive the 44c/kWh rate until 2028. He also stated that we won't be imposing any special taxes or levies on those people with solar panels. It is important that residents are aware however, that the Energy and Water Supply Minister, Hon Mark McArdle MP, has committed to exploring all options to reduce the pressure of increasing electricity prices on behalf of all Queenslander households, businesses and farmers. We know the debate needs to be had about the future of electricity prices in Queensland and any views held by our community that are shared with my office will be used as feedback for the Government – email glass.house@ parliament.qld.gov.au.

Agriculture vision

The plan to double Queensland’s agriculture production by 2040 was released recently with the ‘Queensland Agriculture Strategy’, demonstrating the Government’s plan to revatilise and expand the industry. This strategy will help ensure that Queensland becomes a high-quality food producer choice for Asia’s growing middle class. The Government’s vision for agriculture is for an efficient, innovative, resilient and profitable sector. To read the strategy in full visit http://www.daff.qld.gov.au/31_22262.htm JUNE 19 2013 |

Real Estate M.R.W.L. Inc Plant of the Month Riberry, Small Leaf Lillipilly, Cherry Satinash

Syzygium leuhmannii This beautiful ornamental tree is one of the more common Lillipilly’s that is grown in the home garden, with its dense crown of deep green lance shaped foliage. The new growth or flush is dark pink to red in colour, reaching 8 to 10m in cultivation. The fruit – called Riberries – is a pear-shaped stunning red edible berry maturing in summer. The colourful berry is a popular bush food used in a variety of ways – jams, syrups, sauces, added to fruit salads and is increasingly being prepared in the restaurant industry. The berry has a tart, cranberry-like flavour with a hint of cloves. The Small Leaved Lillipilly can grow in full sun or partial shade, on a variety of site conditions. Young plants will require frost protection in its early stages of growth. The Riberry is also suitable for containers and is ideal for hedges and as a screening plant. It is easily maintained as a smaller tree by light pruning.

Early extra home loan repayment benefits We all know we should do it, but making extra repayments off our home loan is often one of those things that we plan to do ‘one day’. The realities and costs of everyday life can often thwart our best intentions to pump extra money into the home loan and pay it off as quickly as possible. When we do get to the stage of being able to make extra repayments, it may be many years into the home loan. Smartline Personal Mortgage Advisers has reinforced the many benefits of not only paying extra off your home loan, but doing so as soon as possible after taking out your mortgage – preferably immediately after you take ownership of the property. www.gcnews.com.au

“While there are certainly benefits to paying extra at any time during the home loan, working hard to put as much of a ‘dent’ in your home loan balance as quickly as possible, say within the first two to three years, is one of the best things you can do,” said Smartline Adviser Teresa Harrison. “Why? Because in the early stages of a loan, the majority of your repayments are being consumed by interest whereas extra repayments go straight off the principal. “It can make a massive difference to your long-term household cash flow, giving you more choices and opportunities.” Take the example of a $400,000 30-year

loan at 6% interest with fortnightly repayments. The total interest charge on the loan over the life of the loan will be about $463,000. However, paying an extra $100 a fortnight from the very first payment will save a total of about $104,000 over the life of the loan. Waiting two years to start the extra repayments would save about $88,000 and waiting five years would save only about $67,000. Paying an extra $200 a fortnight from the outset would save a total of about $167,000. Waiting two years would save about $143,000 and waiting five years would save about $111,000. “So in this best case scenario, if you

could pay an extra $200 a fortnight from the get-go, you would save about $167,000 or pay about 36% less in interest,” Teresa said. Using an offset account is also a good way to make that dent as quickly as possible. In addition to regular repayments, directing any significant lump sums such as a tax return, bonuses or windfall can also make a considerable difference.

with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com GEMINI May 22 – June 21 The Sun and Jupiter get together raising your confidence and optimism, expanding your vision to possibilities beyond those currently seen. Jump over your fears and let the new information lead you onto joy and recognition. Mercury and Venus in Cancer begin their tender touch. CANCER June 22 – July 22 It’s a prosperous week for your karmic path and destiny. At least you will feel confident and optimistic. One cycle of spiritual progress is ending, as another gears up to begin. A romantic, emotional, jubulent tone imbues your thoughts and words. A lover or child is responsive. LEO July 23 – August 22 Is the best yet to come for you? It most surely is. The effervescent Sun and Jupiter conjunction brings optimism and confidence to new levels. Much support from your colleagues, friends and new connections. You will express yourself joyfully as you manifest your hopes and wishes. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 Opportunities this week grow like wild flowers as the Sun and Jupiter conjoin to bring cheerful professionalism, making you shine publically. You will be optimistic, visionary, talkative, and persuasive with the warm charming Mercury and Venus conjunction. It’s a sweet-talk week.

LIBRA September 23 – October 22 The week builds in a most positive momentum. This is a reflection of your increasingly good spirits. Have faith in yourself. Show off your Libran poise, grace and self assurance. Several planets are building rainbows for the visionary view of your future, riding with confidence. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 You can look for a lift in your emotional well being when the Sun joins up with Jupiter. You can count on reliable Saturn in Scorpio and intuitive Neptune in Pisces to help you know what to do. How can you possibly lose when three water signs are blessing all your sectors. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 An opportunity can be presented to you from one of your good contacts. You can benefit from another person’s generosity or good will. A relationship takes a positive expansive turn. The entry of your ruler Jupiter into caring Cancer sees others generosity flowing your way now. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 A thrilling week, as luckily a lot will change for you in a few days. Buoyed with hope and confidence about self improvement, sees many job opportunities. When Jupiter moves into the sign of Cancer later this month, it stresses the conflict between your ambition and privacy needs.

AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Now we have the Sun and Jupiter in the last few degrees of Gemini giving all Aquarians the ability to sell, teach, or sweet talk your way through anything with charm and wit to spare. Place an emphasis on the value of making and maintaining good associations with contacts. PISCES February 20 – March 20 Optimism and hope soar under a buoyant Sun and Jupiter conjunction helping you to add space to your quarters or moving to a bigger home. Mercury has a destiny date with flirty Venus and they help you to develop love, bringing warm feelings and playful pleasures now. ARIES March 21 – April 20 Your outlook should be expansive, enthusiastic, and optimistic now because you’re full of big ideas and are chasing the answers you seek. News this week is apt to be good. Successful negotiations can be launched on matters of home and property. Family talks produce happiness. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Mercury and Venus together are giving you comfort and gently expressing your feelings to loved ones. Hopefully they will listen with heartfelt warmth. The Sun’s entry into protective Cancer after June 21 favours home and family ties. Enjoy easy comforts with loved ones.

you keep your mouth shut." The officer frowns and says, "and I notice you are not wearing your seat belt sir. That's an automatic $75.00 fine." The driver says, "Yeah, well, you see officer, I had it on, but I took it off when you pulled me over so that I could get my license out of my back pocket." The wife says, "now dear you know very well that you didn't have your seat belt on. You never wear your seat belt when you are driving." And as the police officer is writing out the 3rd ticket, the driver turns to his wife and barks, “Will You please Shut Your Mouth??" The officer looks over at the woman and asks, "does your husband always talk to you this way, Madam?" "Only when he's been drinking!" Margaret Sawers, Mooloolah

A police officer pulls over a speeding car. The officer says "I clocked you @ 80 mph sir." The driver says "gee officer, I had it on cruise control at 60, perhaps your radar gun needs calibrating." Not looking up from her knitting the wife says, "now don't be silly dear - you know that this car doesn't have cruise control." As the officer writes out the ticket, the driver looks over at his wife and growls, "can't you keep your mouth shut for once!!?" The wife smiles demurely and says, "well dear, you should be thankful your radar detector went off when it did or your speed would have been higher." As the officer makes out the 2nd ticket for the illegal radar detector unit, the man glowers at his wife and says through clenched teeth, “woman can’t
