Hi Everyone Last week I received my first Christmas Party invitation and as I looked at my calendar I realised that we were about to begin one of my favourite weeks of the year – when we start our official countdown to Christmas. For those in the world of retail, they might talk about the number of shopping days until Xmas and if you count Sundays, you now have 67 days to purchase everything for the big day. However for us at the GCNews office we don’t think in shopping days but in editions – so as I said this week is the beginning of our countdown – nine editions to go until we close the office for three weeks. In most workplaces people take holidays throughout the year – and your workmates who are taking some time out always seem a little
excited in the time leading up to it. Well this is rather compounded in our office because we all have the same holidays – and once we get past the excitement of Melbourne Cup we are full swing into Christmas. So if you’re organising your Christmas Parties now and are thinking that you would like to get some pics of the special event in the paper and on our facebook page – make sure you let us know the dates. Unfortunately we won’t be able to attend every party – we can give you some tips on what you need to do with your photos – remember to send your party dates through to editorial@ gcnews.com.au Regards,

Garden blooms for charity
54945770
When you ask Tic Davis why her open garden fundraiser this weekend to raise money for RACQ Careflight means so much to her she isn’t able to put it into words, but the tears in her eyes say more than words ever could.
In February 2010 her then 17-year-old daughter Melissa was in a car accident. She was taken to Nambour Hospital and was subsequently airlifted by RACQ Careflight to the Royal Brisbane Hospital. Melissa suffered six bleeds to the brain and spent three and a half months in the Royal Brisbane and Princess Alexandra Hospitals. With Melissa now recovered and looking healthy and well, they want to thank everyone who helped her, especially RACQ Careflight, which doesn’t receive government funding. So if you love gardens and would like to help a worthy cause head to Tic’s Open Garden on Saturday, October 22, from 9.00am - 4.00pm at Wandarri Farm, 55 Bassetts Road, Glass House Mountains. Entry is $2.00, children free. There will be a raffle with six great prizes on offer including a Kookaburra Cricket Bat signed by Ricky Ponting, a handmade patchwork quilt by Orrawin Trocki, a wheelbarrow full of goodies from Coochin Creek Co-op and others, a Thai Massage and Cooking Class from Sawasdee Spa and Massage and Krua Thai Cooking School, a giant Careflight Bear, and plants donated by Tic. Tickets are just $2.00 and will be drawn on the day.

Tic spends hours every day in her garden, so needless to say it is looking beautiful with many plants flowering. Readers may recall Tic’s open garden last year, but this year promises to be bigger and better, including a new Bonsai plant collection. We challenge you to be the judge!

Helping hands - Scott, Wayne and Ross from Glasshouse Country Care
It’s their job to make living in your own home as comfortable and safe as possible by doing the jobs you used to do but which are a bit tricky now to maintain, such as reaching up high to change a light bulb, clear cobwebs, or check a smoke alarm or climbing a ladder to clean the gutter or trim a bush or hedge. For a nominal fee, the boys will take a ute load of rubbish to the dump or clean off slippery paths or steps.
They can advise you on the safety situation of your home and are whizzes at installing grab rails, ramp wedges and even full ramps. Add in a drink of water or tea and they’ll do it all with a smile! Glasshouse Country Care subsidises window cleaning and mowing as well as work by electricians and plumbers. If you need assistance or advice call Tracy at Glasshouse Country Care on 5494 6948.

It’s all in the (Glass House) genes! The recent passing of Australia’s oldest citizen, Mrs Miriam Schmierer (nee Baker), touched the hearts of more than a few people, including a number of locals, it would seem. GCNews learnt of an interesting local connection to our nation’s most senior resident after being contacted by Beerburrum resident April White. Aunty Miriam, as she was known to many, was April’s Great Great Aunty, the youngest sister of her mother Jean’s father Vince’s mother, Mary. The Glass House connection came about when Miriam’s older sister, Mary Baker, married Samuel Poole, living in Glass House Mountains for many years, along with their sons, Sam and Walter, who ran the Poole Brothers pineapple farm at the end of what is now Garrad Road. April said Poole Road, near the Glass House State School would seem to be named after the Poole family but is not in the location of their farm. The Garrad family also had a farm, on now Garrad Road, before the Poole’s arrived. Vince Poole married Marie Garrad, April’s grandparents on her mother’s side. Samuel and Mary later moved to the Hempstock Street cottage, which they rented from the Foster family for a nominal amount. Samuel passed away in 1960 and Mary remained in the

Poole’s pineapple farm, which was sold to Sahara Farms around 1971, is under macadamia plantation today. April said her parents had only just recently visited Aunty Miriam. “I spoke on the phone with her a day after her birthday,” April said. “She was such an interesting lady, and with an amazing memory, even at 112 she could probably tell you most of the people on her family tree, and any story about any part of her life, and most of her relations as well, even the newer generations. “It felt like she was going to live forever, even though we knew that couldn’t be. It’s a rare gift to have known her. Our family and many others, will treasure the memory forever.” Miriam’s sister Mary passed away in 1982, at a very good 103 years. Mary’s daughter, Annie, passed away at age 101 years. According to April, the Baker family tree has many branches and Glass House Mountains is also now home to a couple of other of Miriam’s relatives.

Dog Grooming If your pooch isn’t becoming to you then he/she should be coming to me After Before
An animated nomination Landsborough resident Sean Abnett has been honoured with a national ATOM Award nomination for his short animated film ‘Flood’. Sean’s film is a poignant yet uplifting story inspired by the recent Queensland Sean Abnett floods and captures the spirit of community camaraderie in times of adversity. Flood has received a nomination as one of only four finalists in the category of Best Middle School Animation. Sean said it felt good to be nominated. “I’m pretty proud of myself. I know there were a lot of people who did really well as well.” This is the first time the Year 9 Immanuel
Little girl, big achievement Chloe Tsangaris may have just celebrated her ninth birthday but this is one little girl who has a grown-up view of conservation. Her remarkable achievement raising over $20,000 for the Wildlife Hospital at Beerwah has been recognised with a Pride of Australia Award nomination. “I was reading a wildlife book when I was very young and said to mum, I’d like my babies to be able to see and touch beautiful wildlife and not see them in a book. I want to save wildlife because they are special like us and need help too,” Chloe said. Since then, she has been the driving force to raise money for the Wildlife Hospital. Fundraisers have included camp outs, movie nights, a motorbike ride, coffee days at Gloria Jeans and lots and lots of sausage sizzles. Chloe has had some willing helpers with some of the harder tasks involved in fundraising, but it has been her decision making, drive, dedication and hands-on approach that inspired her own family and other community members and businesses to support her cause. Her accomplishments also saw her receive a Wildlife Warrior of the Year Award last year. The modest youngster said being nominated for awards makes her feel shocked and amazed.
Professional Accredited Dog Groomer Patient gentle treatment of your pets in the comfort of my home. Scissor styling, clipping, blow drying breed specific or to your desired look. (Toenails cut, ears plucked and cleaned all inclusive). Large discount for puppy introduction to grooming less than 6 months old. Quality products used including medicated shampoos for sensitive skin. Your pet will leave looking and smelling wonderful. All equipment cleaned and disinfected between each groom. Will pick up and drop off for special need clients in local area.
Lutheran College student has created a short animated film. The one and a half minute film took about eight weeks to create. “It’s based on the Queensland flood from earlier this year and it shows the devastation of the floods, the nature of the human spirit and how the community has come together to help out each other,” Sean said. “It was something that affected a lot of people.” Sean will be winging his way to Melbourne on Friday, October 21, to attend the awards ceremony. As one of only a handful of Queensland finalists and the only nominee from the Sunshine Coast, we will be wishing him the best in securing this prestigious award. Each year since 1982, the ATOM (Australian Teachers of Media) Awards recognise excellence in over 30 categories of Film, Television, Animation and Multimedia and celebrate the very best of Australian and New Zealand media production. Good luck Sean!
Chloe with her 2010 Wildlife Warrior of the Year Award
“But it’s not about the awards, it about helping the animals and trying to save them. In the future I’d like to see numbers of koalas growing and all endangered animals and the ones that are near extinction,” she said. If you would like to help Chloe in her ongoing efforts, there will be a ‘Monster Campout’ in her back paddock (113 Fraser Road, Beerwah) on Saturday, November 5. Cost is $5.00 per person; bring your own tents, sleeping bags and gold coins for some of the various activities throughout the event such as pony rides, face painting, Gecko Ed interactive talk, sausage sizzle, mobile coffee, African drumming and much more. From the Schools New vines for Birdwing Butterflies at Peachester
Peachester State School was privileged to receive a donation of several Birdwing Butterfly vines to expand on our recent addition of a Birdwing Butterfly trellace thanks to the Richmond Birdwing Conservation Network. Local member and Shadow Minister for the Environment Mr Andrew Powell attended a recent school parade and presented the vines to School Captains Robert Sanders and Ruby Lewis. Principal Mrs Rosemarie Hodder, school captains, Mrs Dorothy Robb and Environmental Club members accompanied Mr Powell around the School, highlighting all the hard work the Environmental Club completes. The members of the Environmental Club had pleasure in sharing with Mr Powell the butterfly trellice, the greenhouse, our vegetable patch, compost area,

water conservation and recycling methods used at the school, and even an off-track tour through the tree vegetation. Mr Powell praised his own children for playing a key part in instigating the donation of the vines. We sincerely thank Mr Powell for the donation of the vines and are proud the school can further help in expanding the corridor to connect existing Birdwing Butterfly colonies in the area.

GCCC Mission trip to Fiji
From Narelle Hill Beerwah State High correspondent
Beerwah students revved for RYDA Earlier this month, Year 11 students from Beerwah State High geared up for a compulsory excursion (aka a day away from school). There was also the upside of freedom! Oh, I mean the upside of cars. I guess freedom and cars are synonymous to teenagers. It was the Rotary Clubs Fostering Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) program, a not-for-profit seminar that helps young people understand road safety. It educates students on issues like hazards, distractions and risks, alcohol, drugs and fatigue, stopping distances, safety features and crashes. Sadly, this column doesn’t have the space to describe each session but all were highly interactive. For example, students were asked to add features to a car and the outcomes included rainbow headlights, goldfish in tyres and hot tubs. Most of us forgot the ABS brakes and seatbelts until we watched a collision video. We won’t be prone to forget the safety features again. I certainly won’t forget stopping distances when two classmates offered to try outrunning a speeding car. Thankfully they were replaced by a female dummy who was hit at about 50km/h. Uproarious laughter was heard, alongside a manly giggle of ‘her skirt flew up LOL’. It remained funny until we were told our classmates would’ve suffered broken spines, fractured jaws and multiple lacerations amongst other injuries. Dennis, a paraplegic because of a biking accident, also spoke, using humour to convey his message about being responsible for our safety. As much as I’ve made the RYDA program out to be fun and games, it was extremely beneficial. I can assure you, many of us didn’t know the brake time of a car, how to check its safety rating, or that the spine is as thick as your little finger and the consistency of toothpaste. Fortunately, we do now and local roads will be safer as a result. All in all, the RYDA program was a joyride, but a very safe one.
This dummy was hit at about 50km/h to demonstrate stopping distances
A group of 25 students, teachers and friends of the Glasshouse Country Christian College spent the school holidays in Fiji, but holidaying was the last thing on their mind. The team worked hard from sun up to sun down, helping with building projects, community service programs, singing and performing drama in schools and running youth groups and kids’ clubs. The students were embraced by the warm hospitality of the Fijian people and were amazed by how they had so little material possessions and yet were so happy. Although the GCCC group worked hard, they were able to squeeze in a little fun. Teenagers who would normally go into withdrawal without technology enjoyed simple pleasures such as swimming in a nearby stream, having a game of footy with the locals and playing in the mud after a heavy downpour. One highlight for the students was when the locals taught them how to trap, cook and eat a mongoose - certainly not your average holiday experience. In the months leading up to the trip, Oakland Farms donated strawberries for sale at the College each Friday. These funds plus what was raised from a trash and treasure stall at GCCC’s Open Day totalled approximately $5,000 which the students gave to the Fiji Bible College to help them with their ongoing needs. Strong friendships were made with the students from Fiji Bible College and it is hoped that this trip will be one of many more to come in following years. Some of the students are already planning their return trip. The leaders were impressed with how the young people behaved and it was a life changing trip for the entire group.
Lifelong friendships were forged between the students of GCCC and the Fiji Bible College

B’ Creative Patchwork and Sewing is a perfect name for this amazing shop – as they stock Jean at work on the everything you will need to get you started on all Handi Quilter those projects you have dreamed about. As well as being the exclusive Husqvarna Viking, Singer and Handi Quilter dealers for the Sunshine Coast and hinterland, they sell fabrics, haberdashery and do machine servicing. They also run classes on patchwork, and specialise in machine embroidery, dressmaking, and software classes, and hire out the Handi Quilter for those who want to quilt their own. Business owners Barbara and Michelle Barker feel it is their specialised product knowledge and skills in machine embroidery and patchwork, and dressmaking for children and adults that keeps their customers coming back. Barbara said they have been operating for five years and undergone continual training with Husqvarna Viking, Singer and Handi Quilter to stay abreast with the latest in technology. “This knowledge is vital for us so that we can hand it on to our customers, so our customers get the most out of their machines when they come to our classes,” she said. Within their industry the quality of their work is well known, with one of the quilts Michelle designed being included in a travelling Husqvarna Viking display. They have also been asked to contribute to Jenny Haskin’s magazine, and for those in the know, this is a very big deal, and one which Barbara describes as a real honour. Earlier this year they moved into new premises, in the same complex, but now next to Dominos. The shop is located at 710 Nicklin Way, Currimundi and is open Monday to Friday 9.00am - 5.00pm, Saturday 9.00am - 2.00pm, and late on Tuesday until 8.30pm.
A natural alternative to pet care
Glass House Holistic Veterinary Services is owned and run by Dorothea Hofman and is primarily a house call practice aiming to offer sensible, logical and well rounded holistic care for pets. After graduating from the University of Queensland in 1985 with a Bachelor of Veterinary Science, it didn’t take Dorothea long to realise the limitations of ‘normal’ veterinary treatments. This led her to start exploring the wide variety of alternative treatments. The journey started primarily with acupuncture and homoeopathy and has progressed since then to nutritional therapies, herbs, essential oils and physical modalities. “I now feel that I can generally select appropriate treatment regimes for most cases,” Dorothea said. “Many treatments will also involve the removal of exposure to other toxic products, such as other drugs and vaccines, and as always, diet is incredibly important in providing nutrition for healing bodies. “Today we are blessed with easier access to information and differing perspectives, and using this knowledge, we can make better selections for ourselves and our pets, allowing people to live better lives and avoid the pitfalls of our modern world.” Dorothea, a Glass House Mountains local, lives with her rapidly growing teenage son, a small tribe of very spoilt dogs, two cats and a very friendly horse. She collects her own water to avoid consuming nasty additives such as fluoride, eats organically, and grows some of her own fruit and vegetables, which she happily distributes to neighbours and clients in times of excess. It has been an intense month since the last report. The school holidays began with increased fire weather for the district. This has been relieved slightly with the recent rain, however dry conditions are expected to prevail overall. The Bells Creek Road area suffered three arson attacks over the first Saturday, Sunday and Monday of the holidays. Originally this section was supposed to be burnt as a joint brigade controlled burn off, but was cancelled due to expected high fire danger conditions for that weekend. The arson investigation team was called in because of the scale of burnt out area. Two vehicles of interest seen behaving in a suspicious manner (by multiple witnesses) before, during and after the bushfire and their descriptions have been reported to the authorities.

Overall in order to contain the fire and due to poor access conditions, 16 sq km of Stocklands Holdings were burnt with no loss of property. A huge thank you to all the brigades from Glass House, Landsborough, Maleny, Ilkley, Palmwoods and Bli Bli for your timely assistance. The next three days didn’t fare any better with numerous call outs to Johnstone Road, Glass House Mountains and Sattler Road, Meridan Plains for arson attacks. Over the last five weeks several new recruits from the area have been undergoing their fire training. They have done well and we look forward to them being included in brigade activity from now on. Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade is running another raffle for Christmas. The prizes include a trailer from Trailers 2000, a tradesman’s pack and several other items that have been donated by the businesses in the local community. Thank you very much to them all. We will name them in the next report. So, keep an eye out for ticket sellers, or if you are at Beerwah Supa IGA, tickets are available there. We will be starting more new recruit training very soon, so this is a call out for anyone over the age of 16 wanting to join to phone 0438 389 998 ASAP. Glasshouse Country View Club Contributed by Pauline Clarke, Publicity Officer
Glasshouse Country View Club visited Maroochydore Botanic Garden for morning tea and lunch on Wednesday, October 5. The garden is set amongst 82 hectares of eucalypt and riparian forest with creeks, lagoons, walking tracks, glades, artworks, picnic tables and a myriad of native plants. In 2005 the Garden proudly hosted the Stone International Symposium and over a period of 15 days, six international and two Australian sculptures created 13 pieces of art. These sculptures are now displayed within the inspiring Bushland Sculpture Garden. The next View Club meeting will be held on October 19 at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club at 11.00am for an 11.30am start. We will be entertained by Gary Roydhouse who will give us a talk on his experience of polio and his time with Radio Sunshine. Please contact Joy on 5439 9049 or Lydia on 5438 7894 for further information. Veterans’ Health Week October 24-30
Enjoying a healthy lifestyle is important for every Australian and Veterans’ Health Week this month reminds us that simple things can go a long way to helping someone lead a healthier and happier life – from sharing coffee with a friend, to checking up on a neighbour. This year Veterans’ Health Week, October 24 30, is all about mental wellness and encouraging members of the veteran community to continue to build resilience, strengthen friendships and promote leadership. For many members of the veteran community, the affects of war and conflict often remain long after their service ends, so it is important they receive support to live a healthy and happy life. The week is a great opportunity to celebrate the strengths of our veterans and improve awareness and understanding of health and wellbeing issues. A range of activities and events will be held during Veterans’ Health Week, from sporting events to tours of inspiring places, right through to simple afternoon tea catch-ups among mates for a laugh and a bit of support. Information sessions are an important part of the week and I encourage veterans to get along to learn a few hints and tips on the mental health benefits of exercise, nutrition and staying connected. There will also be more specific sessions dealing with mental health conditions, like depression. Veterans’ Health Week is about supporting our veteran community, providing a pathway to better mental and physical health and ensuring the bonds of mateship forged during their service strengthen with time. To find out more about activities happening in your area visit www.dva.gov.au/vhw.htm The Hon Warren Snowdon MP Minister for Veterans’ Affairs
Getting it right
I refer to the letter from Danit Black in You Said It, October 12. As suggested by that correspondent, I did download and read the case of Gresham vs. Beerwah RSL and Citizens Memorial Club. In my view stating that His Honour concluded the actions of the Beerwah-Peachester RSL Sub Branch were optimistic in the extreme is not correct and should be corrected. In fact, His Honour in his judgment said ‘I observe in passing that the applicant’s characterisation of the April 2010 communication from the RSL Sub-Branch as advice as to the six elected members for the purposes of rule 11A is optimistic in the extreme.’ The communication was in fact a letter dated April 28, 2010 from the RSL Sub-Branch to the respondent advising of the identities of the executive and office bearers of the RSL Sub-Branch elected at its AGM on February 28, 2010. The letter did not even purport to advise of the six members elected as members of the respondent’s management committee. The RSL Sub Branch is not named as the applicant. The applicant in the case was Mr Gresham. Now whether Mr Gresham is the front man of the RSL Sub Branch in this case I do not know, nor do I care. I am not a member of the BeerwahPeachcester RSL Sub Branch or Club. Whilst the RSL Sub Branch may have acted legally in evicting the Citizens Memorial Club from their premises, that action in my view was morally bankrupt. But what is done is done and hopefully we can all move on now. Chris McCombe Beerwah
Generosity pays off
On behalf of the Glass House Country RSL Citizens' Auxiliary, I would like extend a big thank you to the community and RSL members who put money in the collection for Margaret. Also to those people who bought a protea flower so kindly provided by Lynelle. A big thank you for your effort Lynelle, in arranging the collection and for providing and selling the flowers. We were able to buy Margaret a deluxe pampering voucher from a local beauty shop, for a body massage, facial, pedicure and manicure, something she has not experienced before. Thank you everyone. It's curious to note that as the carbon dioxide tax legislation goes through parliament, on the other side of the world, the British Airport Authority is trebling the size of their snow plough fleet. The Greens obviously believe that the C02 tax is a big win for the environment, yet legitimate questions remain over what it will achieve, other than pushing up the cost of living. to double in this state over the next few years. Meanwhile the federal Greens' coalition partner, the ALP, are pushing through with the expansion of the Olympic Dam uranium mine in SA. It will be the largest open-cut mine of any description, in world history. It is estimated that it will leave a legacy of 44 square kms of radioactive tailings in the open air. What really prompted me to write this letter, however, was a story I read the other day in the Australian newspaper. At a debate in Sydney on October 1 about the role of the media, Bob Brown proposed that it was time the federal government licensed individual newspapers and also individual journalists. In other words, the government would have the power to ban newspapers or remove journos they did not like. To even conceive of this idea is outrageous. Perhaps Bob should relocate to China. For me, somehow, the Greens have lost their edge. Jon Woodlands Maleny
Cobb & Co Although Freeman Cobb sold his Australian Cobb & Co coaching interests in 1856 and returned to America, another American, James Rutherford, brought the Cobb & Co name to Queensland in 1865. Prior to this, Rutherford’s principal coach lines operated out of Bathurst NSW, where he had established a coach building factory. Bathurst built coaches were painted dark red with gold leaf lettering. Hiram Barnes, a senior Cobb & Co driver, brought 16 coaches from Bathurst to Brisbane in 1865. Their first line in Queensland was from Brisbane to Ipswich. The company’s coach building factory in Charleville (from 1886) built coaches painted white with red lettering. Charleville was selected for coach building because of better climatic conditions for the seasoning of timber. The coach service which helped most to establish the reputation of Cobb & Co in Queensland occurred on November 12, 1868 when Hiram Barnes opened the service to the Gympie goldfields. He drove a four-horse team over a difficult track, arriving in Gympie on the evening of the second day out of Brisbane. Cheering crowds carried Barnes shoulder high to the Northumberland Hotel for a festive welcome. (Source: The Lights of Cobb & Co – K A Austin) Bankfoot House still stands today as the site of the lunch stop and horse changing station on the Brisbane to Gympie run.

With the warmer weather arriving, it’s a time that many people will be getting out their swimmers and venturing back to the beach, swimming pools, creeks and water holes for a refreshing swim. It is important that water safety is observed at all times, especially with children. Recently, I had the pleasure to meet again with legendary swimming coach and water safety advocate Laurie Lawrence to help him commemorate the one millionth copy of his ‘Living With Water’ DVD. The DVD has been a valuable tool in Mr Lawrence’s ongoing campaign to promote water safety and prevent childhood drowning.

No stigma for mental health sufferers
LET’S get rid of the stigma attached to mental health. I was pleased to attend the recent launch of an Anti Mental Health Stigma Campaign and it’s obvious this is one area of health which is to some extent ignored, understood and certainly under-funded. I’ve been calling for better mental health facilities for the Coast for a number of years and facts have emerged which support my cause. Apart from the fact that an estimated 20 per cent of the population between 16 and 85 have some form of mental disorder, Queenslanders have suffered more than most in the past year or so. The worst floods since 1974 and the recent spate of cyclones have left their mark. Stress, depression, anxiety, even post traumatic stress disorder have affected too many of our population and these conditions are likely to reoccur as summer looms closer. These people know the reasons they are suffering but many in our community don’t. Too many people are presenting themselves at hospital emergency departments because they have not been able to access in-community help or haven’t before realised they needed help. It is important that people in our community needing help talk to their GP and they will be directed towards appropriate treatment. Often, even talking to a doctor about the condition can help enormously and sufferers come to realise they are not alone. Mental health is the same as other illnesses. It can be treated and there is no place for stigma. That is why I feel it is imperative that there should be more community based facilities both here on the Coast and in other parts of Queensland. The more people know and understand about mental health the less fearsome it will become. It’s an area which has been neglected to date and a lot more work needs to be undertaken. In the meantime, keeping physically, mentally and socially active is an important step towards improving and sustaining healthy minds. Being around other people can help enormously in getting over tough times. Together we can make a difference. www.gcnews.com.au

Is it time to spring clean your makeup? When was the last time you cleaned out your cosmetics? Did you know your lipstick, mascara and foundation have an expiry date? Did you know many makeup products, particularly eyewear, can harbour germs that could lead to infection and or contamination? Even incorrect storage, by exposing it to extremes of heat and sunlight, can damage it, or cause it to expire more quickly. Using makeup that has passed its expiration can do much more damage than you think. If it’s time to spring clean your cosmetics, you might want to check out the range of Natural Compatibles at Exclusive Nail and Beauty Therapy. Enhance by Natural Compatibles is committed to enhancing the health and beauty of women. Their products are carefully manufactured using quality ingredients, carefully selected for their ease of application, staying-power and longterm benefits for the skin. With strict quality
control, every batch of eye shadow, blush, foundation and mascara manufactured by Natural Compatibles undergoes independent laboratory micro-testing to ensure it’s free from contamination, and all products are manufactured from the highest quality ingredients, including botanicals, vitamins and minerals. Give your skin and your makeup a spring clean, and drop in and see Erika at Exclusive Nail and Beauty Therapy for professional advice and quality service. Exclusive Nail and Beauty Therapy is located at shop 9, Beerwah Parade, next door to the Big Mower. Give Erika a call on 5494 0634.

The freedom to create There is an artist in all of us! Start with a blank canvas or document in Photoshop or any other program that uses layers. Using your own ideas and a collection of photos, brushes and shapes, it is possible to create your own artistic graphic design. It is best to choose images from your own camera as they are not subject to copyright if you intend to sell your work. In this picture the bottom layer was an old stone building with a lady placed on the next layer. Layer after layer was added as various brushes were used giving the artist the facility to isolate and modify the layers as changes became necessary. Brushes and stamps were used in similar ways. Once framed, the addition of a red rose added a bright splash of colour and gave more impact to the final result.

Curves to host Girl’s Night In Curves Beerwah is proud to mark its sixth year to host Girls Night In, a special social event promoting awareness of women’s cancer and raising funds for Cancer Council as part of Curves’ Breast Cancer Awareness initiative in October. Owner Linda Bibo is inviting both members and non-members along on Friday, October 28 at 6.00pm for a time of relaxation and learning at Shop 12, Turner Park Shopping Centre, 21 Peachester Road, Beerwah. Girls Night In will include a raffle, and pink champagne, with a $10.00 entry fee. Bring along a plate of finger food of your choice that has an international theme. Attendees will learn how a healthy lifestyle can help them prevent breast and other common cancers, as well as how they can increase their chances of early detection. Cancer experts advise that early detection can
significantly increase breast cancer survival rates and that regular moderate to intensive exercise lowers one’s risk of breast cancer. All donation proceeds will go to Cancer Council Australia. "If you or someone you know has had a cancer experience, come share with women who have undergone the same journey, or who may not be aware of their risk. Curves is above all a community, one committed to keeping each other healthy," Linda said. Curves Beerwah will also offer non-members a chance to join Curves with a zero joining fee exclusively during Breast Cancer Awareness month. For more information on Girls Night In or Curves Beerwah, contact Linda Bibo at 5494 0455 or visit www.curvesbeerwah.com.au To learn more about Cancer Council, visit www.cancer.org.au or phone 1300 65 65 85.

Out and About
Ride for Chappy The sun shone brightly on the re-run of the Ride for Chappy on October 1 after wet weather caused the cancellation in August. A total of $3,800 was raised from both days and special thanks is due to Tribe of Judah Bike Riders, Westpac and Jaimie and Lisa Kerr for organising this fundraising ride for Beerwah High School Chaplain Mike Turner. Thanks to other sponsors Subway Beerwah, the Beerwah High School P&C committee, Kingaroy Harley Davidson and Sound Rider Motorcycle Intercoms.
Crowds filled Mooloolah and District Family Fun Day
Crowds of over 2,000 people filled the Mooloolah and District Family Fun Day held on Sunday at the Mooloolah Community Centre. Colourful faced kids had fun with the animal farm, pony rides, giant slide, jumping castles, games and lucky dips. Chappy from Mooloolah State School had a soggy day on the dunking machine while others were entertained watching schools’ dancing and singing performances, City Limits and other musicians. Many went home with full bellies thanks to the Mooloolah and Glenview State Schools’ food stalls, plants in their hands from the Sunshine Coast Council and stallholders and smiles from ear to ear. Thanks to Mooloolah IGA, Sunshine Coast Council, Hinterland Community Development Association of Caloundra (HCDA), and Grandparents as Parents for their support. Also thanks to the 25 local businesses that provided fantastic raffle prizes, discounts and donations for the day. Special thanks also go to all the volunteers who organised the event, particularly Renee, Sonia, Anne, Jennifer, Norm, Niki and Natasha.

By the time you read this, I will be settled into a bamboo hut in the Songut village, in the southern highlands of PNG (well, hopefully settled, last time the rats kept me awake!) This trip my brother-in-law Luke and I are attempting to train the local men on how to use a chainsaw-mill to make their own timber from the jungle, creating their own source of income. A big thanks to Pat and Greg at The Big Mower for the great deal on the big Husky saw and other the equipment we needed. I can’t wait to bring back the photos of it in action. The best thing I’m looking forward to is the fact that two average blokes, with above average looks, can really make a difference in the lives of people in this village. Last year I saw how much a rain-water tank meant to the people who spent hours each day walking with a bucket to a slow trickling waterfall. Recently I have been wondering how much of what I do around here, that I might think is important, is actually more like what the Bible calls, chasing after the wind. Too often we get so caught up in material gain, becoming popular, or accumulating great knowledge, without it making a scrap of difference in ‘eternal’ type things. In Ecclesiastes chapter 12, the author creates a poetic image of what happens as we grow

old. The almond tree blossoms (our hair turns grey), the sound in the street fades (we lose our hearing), and the clouds return again after the rain (we don’t bounce back like we used to when we were younger). His advice is to remember your Creator while you are young and realise that most things return to the dust in which they came from. The best investment we can make is getting to know God through Christ and building relationships with others. When we serve God and use the resources we have been blessed with to serve others, things begin to take on an eternal value.

The biggest mistakes brides make when hiring a wedding photographer 1. You pick a photographer based on price.

Spring is now with us and as I sit looking from the office window I have this very pleasant view of several ‘Yesterday – Today – Tomorrow’ bushes framing my view of several different bromeliads. The mauve and white mass of flowers which are in full bloom provides a backdrop for several large bromeliads. The centre piece being the Alcantarea Mature Alcantarea regina in the garden regina, this is flanked by Aechmea blanchetiana. The photos show the Alcantarea ready to produce a spectacular flower spike which will last until the end of autumn when the seed will be ripe. These fluffy seeds can then be blown by the wind to generate a new plant. It would be a magnificent display if the two A. balnchetiana plants would flower at the same time but they’ll not be flowering until next year. The Alcantarea regina is a greenish yellow leaf, it has an arching form with a partially folded tip with a waxy silver like coating. This silver appearance is given by a white waxy power which covers the leaves. The leaves although firm and thick have a soft texture. This plant like most bromeliads can reproduce from either seed or from offsets (commonly called ‘Grass Pups’) these are sent up from the base of the mother plant. The pups can be removed and potted up to produce a new plant or in the wild they will clump up to produce a large mass of many plants. This species is a native of Brazil and will grow in full sun. All Alcantarea’s will grow into large plants 1m across and 1m high. They are a hungry plant and will respond to a regular annual feed of fertiliser.

Exploding into bloom all over the Sunshine Coast is one of our favourite Bottlebrush – Rose Opal. This wonderful cultivar originates from a cutting selection taken from Wappa Falls on the south arm of the Maroochy River in the 1960’s. It has proven itself as a very hardy and beautiful native shrub to around 2m, producing masses of scarlet red brushes that are laden with nectar throughout spring and summer. This brings in many species of nectar feeding birds. It looks best in full sun and can handle a wet spot in the garden. We recommend pruning it annually to maintain a bushier shrub.

With the motto ‘great people plus expert advice equals fantastic fences’ the team at Fenceline Qld have over 100 years of experience to make sure their customers get exactly what they want at great prices. Business owner Phil Young, who has over 30 years experience in the building trade himself, is proud of the high standard of service of his staff, who are all locals. “Without the staff you haven’t got a business, our knowledge and expertise is second to none,” he said. Fenceline, which has been in business for 20 years, does all types of fencing: timber, steel, chainlink, colourbond, fences

Funding for local RSL sub branch The Beerwah Peachester RSL Subbranch has been allocated $1,538 from the Building Excellence in Support and Training funding program. The funding was recently announced by the Member for Fisher, Peter Slipper.
Emergency funds for Glass House group Member for Fisher Peter Slipper has announced more than $870,000 to assist organisations in Fisher that provide emergency financial support services to vulnerable people. Locally, the Nungeena Aboriginal Corporation for Women’s Business in Glasshouse Mountains received $31,181. The Financial Management Programme aims to assist those struggling financially by providing emergency relief where required and financial counselling, as well as initiatives such as no-interest loans and matched savings schemes. Mr Slipper said the funds help provide for a wide array of benefits, from emergency food or petrol vouchers, or household goods, through to part-payment of essential bills and, perhaps most importantly, basic budgeting advice and advocacy. The funding comes from the Financial Management Programme for the period from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2014. www.gcnews.com.au

Blood, Sweat and Cheers Glasshouse Pony Club has reason to celebrate
Recently voted Pony Club of the Month in the horse riders’ favourite magazine ‘Horse Deals’, Glasshouse Pony Club was the recipient of a $200.00 Horseland voucher. The award paid tribute to the club’s commitment to supporting young riders on their journey and adventures with their horses, learning new skills and developing life-long friends. The club bound together earlier this year to support the Wall family through Jess’s illness and sad passing, and this also contributed to the club being recognised as the club of the month. Glasshouse riders have also had their moment in the spotlight of late, with some terrific achievements over the past few weeks. Roxie Pitcher qualified to represent our zone at recent State sporting events. Roxie travelled to Chinchilla with her trusty stead Rains, where she won overall champion in her age group for the State Formal Gymkhana, and overall champion for State Sporting. Roxie then travelled interstate to Werribee in Victoria with the State Mounted Games Team, competing against all other states and finishing fourth overall. Congratulations Roxie.

Glasshouse Hinterland AFL Club
Beerwah Ladies Golf
At the recent Sunshine Coast AFL Awards our club was well represented with Mitchell Fraser winning the leading goal kicking award for U16 Division 2. It was great seeing Mitchell playing footy back at Glasshouse after taking a year off. Adam Lillecrapp won the best and fairest award for U14 Division 1. The Under 14’s moved up to Division 1 this season which shows the great progress happening in our club. Casey Isbel won the leading goal kicking award and the best and fairest award for U12 Division 2. This was a stellar effort winning the best and fairest award by a record margin. Casey shows great promise for the future of our club. Our U16 team competed in the grand final, losing narrowly by two points. This year also saw our club field a seniors team in the Division 3 competition and our team reached the semi finals. This was a successful year for our club. Our AGM will be held on October 30 at 11.00am at Landsborough Sports Complex on Tunnel Ridge Road. This is a very exciting year for the club with our numbers for an Under 18’s side looking promising. We will be fielding Auskick through to seniors in 2012 and if you would like to join our expanding club contact Phil McCombe on 0412 989 135 or 5494 6995.

Div 2 winner was Joan Harvey with a 70 nett, runner up was Joan Swyny with 71 nett. Nearest to the pins on 2- Heather Henn, 5Shirley Cooper, 16- Sonia Kenway, and 18Heather Henn. Birdies on 5- Shirley Cooper and Ros Jamieson, on 16- Lea Garner, Roselie Green, Betty Howe and Sonia Kenway. The follow up to last week’s ‘Winners are Grinners’ the five ladies in the photograph represented Beerwah in the final at Gympie Golf Club and won. The game was held on Saturday, October 15 and they defeated Nanango and Wide Bay.

OCTOBER 19 2011
On October 7 - 8, the Queensland Downhill Mountain Bike Championships took place at Mount Joyce near Beaudesert. Fourteen-year-old Mooloolah local, Max Warshawsky, who should be racing in the Under 15s, jumped two age brackets and travelled down to compete in the Under 19s. The track was steep, rocky and technical at the top with an energy-sapping section near the finish that tested all the riders. Max had a seeding run and qualified fourth. In his race run, he pulled out all the stops and was in the hot seat until the last rider came down and beat Max’s time by 0.9 of a second. Due to this rider being from New South Wales, he was not able to claim the title so Max was crowned Queensland’s Under 19 champion. Max, who has won the Under 15 Queensland and Australian titles in previous years, was really pleased and now just wants to get faster! Max would like to thank his sponsors Erek Smith from Beerwah Cycles, Devinci Cycles, Chunked, N.S. Dynamics and Caloundra Fitness for their constant support, while his dad would like to thank him for turning his hair grey!

Last Wednesday was our monthly Jackpot Triples. The draw of the game card was for the ‘Highest Winning Margin’. The winners of the day with a +13 were Marleen Bertram, Trevor Bertram and Jan Lawson and the runners-up with a +9 were Peter Jurd, Bob Coxon and Monika Duff. The lucky team drawn out was Bede Burton, Rae Farrell and Kerry Capern. As the Jackpot was not won it will increase to $136.00 for next month’s game on November 9. The Fifth Round of Business Bowls on Wednesday night was postponed due to a power failure. It will be replayed this week and the series will be extended for an extra week to complete the six rounds. Thursday morning’s game of ‘Open Pairs’ was won by Joan and Stewart Wilson with two wins + 40. The runners-up, being the ‘Winners of the Losers’ with the highest margin of +14 in game two, were Clive Sinton and John McSwain. The afternoon game was reduced to one round due to rain. Gary Lehmann and Jim Tatum won with +17 and the runners-up were Maurie Dawes and Jonathan Orr with +16. The first round of the 2011 Mixed Fours Club Competition was played on Saturday. Ross Siegle def Richard White, Trevor Bertram def Robbie Dean, Terry Little def John McSwain and Gary Lehmann def Jan Lawson. In the Semi-Final on Sunday, R Siegle def T Bertram and T Little def G Lehmann. The final will be played at 1.00pm on Saturday, October 22. www.gcnews.com.au

A farm boy accidentally overturned his wagon load of corn. The farmer who lived nearby heard the noise and rushed right over. “Hey Willis!!” the farmer yelled, “forget it for now. It’s dinnertime. Come eat with us, and then we’ll come back and I will help you turn the wagon back up.” “That’s mighty nice of you,” Willis answered, “but I don’t think Pa would like me to.” “Aw, come on,” the farmer insisted, “you have to eat! We’ll get back to the wagon soon.”

“Well okay,” the boy finally agreed, and added, “but Pa won’t like it.” After a hearty dinner, Willis thanked his host. “I feel a lot better now, but I know Pa is going to be real upset.” “Don’t be foolish,” the neighbour said with a smile. “By the way, where is your Pa?” The boy replied “under the wagon.”
