his week is a sad one for me as our lovely News Editor, Kylie Wyer will be leaving GCNews. Later this year she will be heading to live in North Queensland, which will make commuting to work out of the question. When a valuable team member resigns of course you wish them well for the future and genuinely want everything to go well for them, however there is always a little part of me that wishes they were staying because of what they have brought to my life. I know that is selfish, but I like to think that I react this way because I really genuinely can appreciate the skills and

The buzz of spring
Call Leisa or Michelle
Spring is often associated with the start of new life, a period of rebirth, growth and the bounty of mother nature. And for one species, the honeybee, this is especially true.
Humble the honey bee is not. This powerhouse of mother-nature plays such an important role in the cycle of life, that its importance can't be underestimated. One man who can attest to that, who knows more than most about honey bees, is Dale Ihle. The Glass House Mountains beekeeper has plenty of advice about how to avoid an unwelcome interaction with bees, who are now at their most active as they move about in search of food. As anyone who has ever had the misfortune of being stung could attest to, and despite all their redeeming features, the honey bee remains an insect that should be left well alone, he says. “Generally, bee swarms are quiet and pose no or little threat if not provoked, but there’s always exceptions,” Dale said. “Bees are like dogs in that they can sense your fear,” he said. “If you provoke them, or wave your arms about, or try to spray them, they will become defensive, and they will attack." His number one tip is to stay calm, and if you are stung, don’t try and pull out the stinger, which will only release more venom. He said it’s best to try and scratch the stinger out

Bees sense fear, so stay calm, says Dale with your fingernail, so the venom bag at the end of the stinger is removed intact. As an industry, beekeeping is less popular than it used to be, Dale said, but critical to the nation’s economy. “Bees are such an important part of the food chain, as we depend on them to pollinate a lot of our food crops." According to the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, honeybees add an estimated $4 to 6 billion to the Australian agricultural and horticultural industries each year. More than 80,000 commercial hives in Queensland produce around 75 kg of honey per hive annually. Dale is one of a number of registered beekeepers across Glasshouse Country, and is happy to come out and remove bee swarms from private property. Contact him on 5496 9387 or 0437 333 040.

Local roads, schools and disability services are the main beneficiaries of the Newman Government’s first budget handed down last week, according to local member for Glass House, Andrew Powell. Queensland public schools will be made safer and local school communities will get more power to decide how to fix urgent maintenance issues through a new $200 million commitment unveiled in last week’s Budget. Mr Powell welcomed the news that each and every state school Parents and Citizens organisation will be able to apply for up to $160,000 per school to fix existing priority maintenance issues under the two-year Advancing Our Schools Maintenance Fund. "Whether it's peeling paint, broken glass, uneven footpaths or guttering that is falling down, too many of our state schools have maintenance issues that have become potential health and safety hazards after years of Labor neglect," he said. After campaigning for the last three years to have much-needed works carried out on Maleny - Kenilworth Road, Mr Powell was extremely pleased that the Newman Government would spend nearly $11.4 million over the next two years on this key hinterland route. “I’ve walked along this road for years and hounded the former Labor government to better fund this vital link,” Mr Powell said. “I made a promise to the people of Glass House that I would continue to push for funding after the election and I am proud to say we have listened and delivered.”
“I’ve also continued to lobby hard for the D’Aguilar Highway in the south of the electorate and whilst more work will need to be done, this budget allocates just under $1 million to improve the intersections at Bye Road, J Lindsay Road and Andrew Powell road resurfacing,” Mr Powell said. In addition, the Newman Government has also allocated: • $11.912 million to finish the repair work to Palmwoods - Montville Road; • $2.85 million over the next two years to continue the Pumicestone Road / Bruce Highway interchange upgrade; • $884,000 to repair Maleny - Stanley River Road; and • $50,000 in the coming financial year as part of a $950,000 project to improve intersections on the Landsborough - Maleny Road. Mr Powell said the Glass House community would also receive $2.872 million in grants for disability services this year. “I know we need better roads, I know families with disabilities need support, but I also know that we can’t deliver any of these things without making the hard decisions outlined in this budget,” Mr Powell said. “The measures we have introduced will set Queensland’s finances on the road to recovery. “Instead of wasting money on an ever-increasing interest bill, we’ll have more money to spend on delivering the services people need in the future.” • unite • inspire • succeed

Information session for landholders
The newly endangered status for lowland subtropical rainforests has prompted a call for action, with SEQ Catchments to provide assistance to landholders to protect and restore remaining areas of this rainforest in the upper Stanley and Mooloolah catchments. A community information session on Monday, September 24, 7.00pm - 8.30pm at Peachester Hall, Peachester, will provide more information on how landholders can get involved. Last year, Lowland Subtropical Rainforest was listed nationally as a critically endangered ecosystem, the fifth to occur in South East Queensland (SEQ). Community Partnership Manager for the Upper Brisbane region, Bruce Lord, says the type of assistance available will likely vary from property to property. ‘‘There are different ways to manage this rainforest type and our approach is to have a look at what practices may or may not already be occurring on the land and go from there,’’ he said. ‘‘Very often we are able to provide assistance in a way that adds value to some of these practices and improves the overall health of the land, by managing aggressive weeds and providing advice on fire management.’’ ‘‘Other assistance could include erosion control, revegetation and stock management.’’ If interested, please contact: Mooloolah landholders Susie: PO Box 7081, Sippy Downs, 4556 5459 4788, schapman@seqcatchments.com.au Stanley landholders Bruce: PO Box 116, Kilcoy, 4515 5422 0516, blord@seqcatchments.com.au

Long long road to rehab
by Greg Brown
Two consecutive summers of extreme rainfall have left many sections of the Glasshouse Country road network in desperate need of repair. Recently Sunshine Coast Council Service Delivery Portfolio Councillor Ted Hungerford announced that more than $20million would be spent on resealing and rehabilitating the 3500km Sunshine Coast road network during the current financial year, while a further $27million would be spent repairing pot holes, road failures, linemarking renewals and grading the region's gravel road network. Of this 3500km of planned work only 2.65km of local Division 1 roads are planned to have some attention under the Rehabilitation and Reseal Program. “Sunshine Coast Council uses a specific pavement management system to help determine which roads require attention and this is supplemented by the local knowledge of our front line road maintenance teams” Cr Hungerford said. But seemingly, this frontline knowledge doesn’t include that of local residents. Ross Parks, a local from Glass House Mountains has been trying to warn council about a particularly dangerous section of Old Gympie Road, but so far has been dissatisfied with their response. Ross has been trying to have the road surface repaired on Old Gympie Road from Coonowrin Road towards Beerburrum, however to date; he’s been given the bureaucratic run around. “I put in a service request about the disgraceful condition of the road, and the response I eventually received left a lot to be desired,” said Ross. “It disappoints me that the roads in the Caloundra central business district and surrounds are to receive preferential treatment, while those in the hinterland remain in such a shocking state of disrepair. “When I did receive a response from Council, they proudly stated they were indeed dealing with the road and that resealing work was programmed to take place on Old Gympie Road … from Shaws Road towards Peachester Road – the total opposite end to the stretch I was actually highlighting. “If this is an example of their pavement management system at work, then heaven help us all,” exclaimed Ross.
Ross Parks points out the damaged road verge Ross stressed that the entire road is a scenic tourist drive, linking the access to all the Glass House Mountains. “This section of road is the southern approach to the Glass House Mountains region, which is a major use road for tourists seven days a week. It doesn't showcase to visiting tourists our respect (or lack of) for this National Heritage listed region.” But finally, after further prodding, Council staff concurred and has let Ross know via email, that … “a defect inspection will now take place ASAP to determine any defects that can be undertaken (sic), these will then be scheduled on a priority basis.” According to figures provided by Council, 2.65km of local Division 1 roads are planned to have some attention under the Rehabilitation and Reseal Program in 2012/12. Of all the broken local roads, the only ones scheduled for works are Freshwater Court, Glenview Road (part of) and Martin Road, Palmview; parts of Mawhinney Street, Pine Camp Road and Old Gympie Road, Beerwah; and Mount Beerwah Road, Glass House Mountains. Surprisingly, work on the shocking section of Old Landsborough Road, Beerwah has been programmed but is on hold subject to flood relief funding from the State Government. Cr Hungerford said that the current budget will not enable council to fully fix all the areas that require repairs. “Our focus at the moment is to make sure no more roads fall into the stage where rehabilitation is the only option, so we are allocating more funds to reseals." But for frustrated locals like Ross it seems like the bureaucratic ball just keeps bouncing.

Glass House local touched Celebrate spring at the by cancer fights back Glasshouse Orchid Show Glass House Mountains local Erin Gorlick will celebrate five years of being cancer free this October by lacing up and stepping out for the Hinterland Relay For Life. Five years ago, Ms Gorlick was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare type of cancer that affects bone and soft tissue, and endured an operation and 14 months of chemotherapy treatment. “When I was first diagnosed it was such a shock because I had no family history of cancer,” she said. “I knew that the survival rates were pretty low, but I was one of the lucky ones and this October I will be celebrating five years of being cancer free.” Ms Gorlick said she got through the tough times thanks to the love and support of family and friends. “We have all decided to celebrate my recovery by getting together for the Hinterland Relay For Life and supporting other families, like my own, who have been touched by the disease.” Ms Gorlick’s Relay team ‘Dessert Divas’ includes locals Clare McKay and Elice and Selena Freshwater, along with friends Karen Parker, Tracey Benjafield and Jackie Calnan. “We decided to call ourselves Dessert Divas because we have been using a lot of old school fundraising ideas like bake sales,” Ms Gorlick said. On the day, the team will don aprons and their makeshift baton will take the form of a wooden spoon in an effort to complement their ‘dessert’ theme. The Hinterland Relay will be held on October 6 - 7 at the Beerwah Sportsground. To sponsor or donate, visit the Relay for Life website at relayforlife.org.au. Savanagh, centre, with mum Heidi, right, with cast and crew at their home in Landsborough said she was pleased to be able to support Savanagh’s passion in acting, which she said she inherited from her great grandmother. Director Nicole Baker said Savanagh had been cast perfectly. “Savanagh is very easy to direct, she’s very mature, and she really tries to embody the character she is playing. “She also has the most amazing facial expressions, which is important, because the role of her character, Charlie, isn’t dialogue driven.” Nicole was quick to thank the hospitality of her hosts, Savanagh’s parents Heidi and Jacques, as well as the broader community, who were quick to respond to calls for help. “We would really like to thank Beerwah Supa IGA and Beerwah Woolworths, who generously gave us food vouchers, and would like to put a big shout out for Matilda Fruit Barn, who donated four boxes of fruit and vegetables,” Nicole said. “We’ve found businesses in this area are a lot more open and friendly than what we are used to around Brisbane, it’s been great working up here.”

And taking centre stage was none other than Landsborough resident, rising child actress, Savanagh Malan. The short film, 'Bleeding Bark', follows the story of a mother who is admitted to a mental asylum after her daughter is killed by a demon. The film, being produced by students from QPIX, an industry training institution in Annerley, Brisbane, is part of a pilot series called ‘Tales from Asylum’, which is expected to be pitched to commercial television networks at the end of the year. Eleven-year-old Savanagh, a Year 6 student at Glasshouse Country Christian College, plays the role of Charlie, the daughter who meets her end after befriending a demon, disguised as a child. Last week, a crew of 10 descended on Savanagh’s home, a sprawling 24 acre property in Landsborough to film some of the scenes for the pilot. And despite her cruel fate, Savanagh said filming the scenes in her own backyard had been fun. “I really want to be an actress when I grow up, and it’s been great being able to play this role, which is based around a girl the same age as myself,” Savanagh said. After commencing her acting career only last year, Savanagh, whose introduction to drama began with local drama and theatre group GADES, already has another television pilot under her belt, as well as a number of advertisements, and a few stage performances. Mum Heidi, who played host to the film crew last week after offering the use of the family property,

Community News A brief history of Lions International Contributed by Bob Banner It was during 1917 that Melvin Jones a Chicago business leader called a group of colleagues together and asked a simple world changing question. What if people put their talents toward improving their community? It was a question that led to the formation of a service club in Chicago and the beginnings of the world’s largest service organisation. The name chosen for this organisation was Lions International, an abbreviation for Liberty, Intelligence, Our Nation’s Safety. Today Melvin’s original service club has grown to a worldwide organisation with 1.35 million members. During 1880 a baby daughter was born to an Alabama couple, Arthur and Katherine Keller. Their daughter whom they named Helen was born as a normal little girl, but two years later a devastating illness struck and robbed young Helen of her of her hearing and eyesight. Helen Keller though went on to pursue a life of remarkable achievement, becoming the first blind/deaf person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1925 Keller challenged the fledgling Lions organisation to become ‘Knights of the Blind’ and take part in the crusade against darkness. During 1986 Professor Laurie Hirst received a grant of $250,000 from the Queensland Lions Medical Research Foundation to begin outfitting his area of
research, a move that ultimately led to the Queensland Eye Bank achieving remarkable results. Today the Beerwah Lions Club still collects used spectacles, which are then sent to the Lions spectacle recycling centre at Redcliffe for sorting, before being sent on to underprivileged countries where they bring hope Shaun Wilson from and improved Specsavers Beerwah sight to many. If you would like to pay tribute to the work of Melvin Jones and Helen Keller why not drop any unused glasses into Specsavers at the Beerwah Marketplace.
Glasshouse Country Toastmasters Contributed by Kerry Gillam The Youth Leadership Course at Glenview Primary School finished on Wednesday, September 5 with the Graduation night held in the school’s hall. It was a great group of students who undertook the course offered by Glasshouse Country Toastmasters. Every year the Youth Leadership Co-ordinators are amazed at how quickly the children discover their hidden talents when guided in the right direction. Ten students presented their speeches, written by them, and all were either informative, hilarious or brought a message to the audience. All the other students participated with the roles of chairman,
Peachester CWA
Contributed by Coral Beutel, Hon. President On August 9 the Nambour North Coast Divisional Meeting was held at the Botanical Gardens, Maleny. Peachester and Tewantin / Noosa served morning tea in a delightful setting with beautiful clear views of the Glass House Mountains. On August 18, Peachester Country Women’s Association catered for the Jewellery Auction for Cancer, the flowers were given by Margaret Ferris as she is the only surviving member of her family, having lost them all to cancer. All members have been touched by this terrible disease in some way. We gave our time and food, setting up and working 8.00am - 4.00pm on Sunday in lieu of a monetary donation to the cancer appeal. The five members who did the catering are all over 70 and we would like to thank the people who helped on the day in any way. Special thanks to Bev Wild’s daughter Sanoy who looked after the cooking of 5kgs of rice,
vice chairman, table topics master, evaluators or having to stand up and do impromptu speaking, which is not easy, even for an experienced speaker. They all surprised their family, friends and even the teachers with the progress they made in the eight week course. It was an awesome night and Martine Goedhart is to be praised for all her work in leading this program. We would like to thank Glenview Primary School for offering this course to their Year 7 Students. To the Class of 2012, we wish you all the best in the following years, you are all winners.
and also helping with the serving and washing up. Our sincere thanks to Leanne, Margie, Britt, Wendy and Todd for all their help. Thanks to Lidia for the use of her rice cooker, also to absent members Cath and Pam for their cooking and Peter who cooked three large slices for us. The dates have been booked for the markets next year, February 23, April 27, June 29, September 28 and November 23. Our next markets are on September 22, with Beerwah CWA running the canteen. Ring Joan on 5494 9521 if you would like to have a stall. Our next meeting on October 4 will be held at Nessie’s home at Glass House and then we will go on the Glasshouse Tavern for a birthday lunch. You Said It Special thanks
I would like to thank the public and helpers for their generosity helping the Legacy Appeal
Mary Southern, President of Legacy Laurel Club
So disappointing
I wanted to share my disappointment with local charities and churches. I am in my 40's and suffer from a terminal brain disease. I am on a disability pension and require a full time carer. Recently my car engine blew up and I needed to replace the engine in my car. As I am on a disability pension money is tight and with a repair bill of just under $4,000 it was impossible for me to pay the repair bill. We contacted all our family members for help and were only able to come up with a third of the bill. I needed my car for doctor and hospital appointments and I needed it to put my wheelchair in the back just so I could get out of the house. I have worked hard all my life and always given to charities. We were very reluctant to ask for help. I struggled with this and didn't want to have to ask for help. I started phoning local charities like, Salvos, St Vincent de Paul, Lions club, churches and even Dick Smith. I contacted people from Caboolture to Nambour. All I got was the run around or people saying they couldn't help for various reasons. Some didn't even bother to call me back, despite numerous phone calls and messages left. I am left feeling totally alone and so disappointed, not to mention embarrassed for even asking. What do you need to qualify for help these days? The whole situation has left me with a bad taste in the mouth and I can see no point to give any money to charities as they couldn't help me. I will always give to Legacy as this is one charity that's important to me. I just wanted people to know that there are local people doing it tough and to get the door slammed in my face at every turn has just bewildered me. It's hard enough to have a terminal illness and to struggle on a disability pension but to need help for me just to get out of my house for appointments or just to go shopping and to not get any help has really made me lose my faith I'm mankind.
The Lookout Cafe
I would like to give Noeleen, Rochelle and Elise at ‘The Lookout Café’ a big plug. What a gem of a place hidden in our beautiful Glass House Mountains. I have been there the last two Wednesdays for lunch with different friends. The food was beautiful and the service and outlook was amazing. We were very impressed. Thank you.
Cheryl, Glass House Mountains
Local dancers perform in extravaganza
Beerwah Ausfunk students were part of a combined concert put on by 350 of their students at the Suncoast Christian College Auditorium recently. Ausfunk Director Haley Green said empowering the kids through dance and giving an opportunity for all students to shine on stage made for a happy, energetic performance “The crowd loved the diversity of the show which included cheerleaders, hip hop / funk, as well as the new adult burlesque / broadway class,” she said. “Funds are raised to present the show this way so every child gets to dance in a costume on stage regardless of money.” Classes run throughout the school term at Beerwah State School on a Monday afternoon. They will also be running holiday workshops on September 24 and 25 in Beerwah for gymnastics, dance and building self esteem. To find out additional information check out their website at www.ausfunk.com.au

Good readers rewarded
Recently Beerwah Library ran a promotion to encourage young readers to become regular visitors to the library. For every library visit, children received a stamp on their loyalty card and after three stamps their card went into the draw to win a ‘Where is the Green Sheep’ prize pack. The recent lucky winner was Marissa Ryan. Due to the popularity of the competition the library will run another promotion over the next three months. The next gift is set to be drawn December 14. Turning up the heat
Members of the Glasshouse Country Menshed had the barbie fired up and the sausages sizzling at Bunnings Caboolture last week to raise funds and awareness for the Glasshouse Country Prostate Cancer Support Group. September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia is ‘turning up the heat’ during the month and encouraging people to participate in a ‘big Aussie Barbie’. Contact Bob on 0427 606 240 for more information how you can assist in finding a cure for Prostate Cancer. The disease will see 20,000 men diagnosed each year and claimed 3,000 lives in 2011. Be a man and talk to your doctor about prostate cancer and start your testing program today. You can also visit www.prostate. org.au for more information.

Newman Budget 2012
The first Newman Government Budget has now been announced and I’m pleased to report it is a Budget for Queensland’s future and is the most important Budget in a generation. Some of the benefits locally include, funding for roads, schools and disability services. Cost of living savings have been targeted with the announcement of a rebate up to $80.00 per domestic water connection and freezes to car rego costs and electricity tariffs. First home buyers are also being offered $15,000 if they buy a newly built home or one off the plan, aimed at boosting construction activity. Also announced were investments in health services across our region with funding towards the Sunshine Coast University Hospital and to expand the Caboolture Hospital Emergency Department.
Last chance for this round of Everyone’s Environment Grants
Community based environmental groups have until September 28 to apply for grants to rehabilitate their local environment. The Newman Government will provide $12 million over the next three years for community groups to tackle local conservation issues. Second and third rounds of the grants will be made available in 2013 and 2014. Individual grants between $2,000 and $100,000 are available for projects like tree-planting and restoring land, water quality improvement, land and waterway clean-ups, and monitoring pollutants in streams. Further information, guidelines and application forms for the Everyone’s Environment grants are available at www.ehp.qld.gov.au
Partnership with Keep Australia Beautiful
A new partnership with the packaging industry and Keep Australia Beautiful Queensland (KABQ) will give our state a brighter and cleaner future and will ensure Queensland remains one of the most stunning places in the world. The partnership will boost KABQ’s Tidy Towns and Clean Beaches programs and also pay for community and school education schemes. The emphasis will be on reducing litter and improving recycling rates with new and/ or upgraded recycling systems at major shopping centres, entertainment venues and sporting clubs. These initiatives will deliver real outcomes for our environment without imposing any additional cost to Queenslanders. To read more about it visit www.ehp.qld.gov.au/waste/recycling.

Petition well underway A petition lobbying authorities to install traffic signals out the front of Beerwah State School (Old Gympie Road / Peachester Road intersection) is well underway and has attracted great support so far. At the moment it’s very dangerous for school children and locals to even attempt to cross, and something needs to be done. If you haven’t already, please support this petition by visiting www.parliament.qld.gov.au/work-of-assembly/petitions/epetitions to sign it. It’s open until October 29, where it will then be lodged in Parliament. As the sponsoring Member of the petition, I will also lodge any hard copies that are available in my office at 1/118 Bulcock Street, Caloundra.
South East Queensland Bus Network Review The Department of Transport and Main Roads is currently reviewing our local bus networks with a view of eliminating service duplication, getting more people on public transport by simplifying the network and redirecting resources to routes where there is overcrowding. Local residents are encouraged to complete a Service Review Form, which is open now until midnight, Sunday, September 23. Visit www.translink.com.au to fill out the form or call the team at Translink on 13 12 30, who are more than happy to go over it with you. It’s very important everyone has their say.
Budget delivers for Caloundra and Hinterland The State Government’s historic budget was brought down in Parliament last week, and I’m pleased to see funding has been allocated for our communities. Local families and businesses have been given a boost with freezes to car rego costs and electricity tariffs, first home buyer incentives, strong investments in local health services and cuts to payroll tax. Local state school P&C’s will be able apply for $160,000 to fix existing priority maintenance issues under the two-year Advancing Our Schools Maintenance Fund. This will cut red tape and allow our children to learn in a safer environment. www.gcnews.com.au

Create a Masterpiece on Ipad
Art has never been easier now that you can create a masterpiece using your iPad. If you want to sketch or use a picture taken with your iPad or a photo downloaded from your camera, all you need to do is browse through the app store and download one or more of the many available apps. Many apps are free and it is wise to try before you buy. Look for a lite version which is free before paying for the full version. Also check the star ratings and comments. Look for an app which is easy to use and gives full resolution especially if you wish to print. This photo started out as a shop mannequin. The eyes were added using one app then it was saved to the camera roll and opened up in another where the skin colour, eye shadow, eye lashes, eyebrows, lipstick, and hair were added. It was saved again to the camera roll and opened in the third app to place a frame around it. So easy, save and share with your friends. It’s fun and the only thing lost is time. For the month of September check out the examples of Ipad Art by the Grafx Group in the Library foyer.
Grafx Group meets at the Beerwah Library each Thursday afternoon, from 2.00pm – 3.00pm. New members are always welcome to find out more contact Alistair Davis on 5496 9006 or email alistairvet@gmail.com
SHOUT for the trees
Tourism Talks
with Jayne Wilson
Senior Tourism Consultant Glass House Mountains Visitor Information Centre I can’t believe it’s been six weeks since I started here at the Glass House Visitor Information Centre. What’s happened so far, you ask? Well many of the new staff, including myself, are still getting to know or re-acquaint themselves with the Glasshouse and Hinterland area by going off on day trips to further our knowledge. The volunteers have been both patient and helpful in this transition and without them the staff would be lost - sometimes literally. We are looking into souvenir items to sell in the centre; some old favourites making a return will be the local honey and jam. Watch this spot for further updates. The month of August saw the display area in the Glasshouse Visitor Centre used to promote local businesses and events, one of these was the Real Food Festival for their event held on September 8 and 9. Favourite Sunshine Coast Places with Cr Rick Baberowski Just in time for the school holidays you might want to know about another special Sunshine Coast place to be kept secret just between us, the Ewen Maddock Park. While the facility has been used for many years by locals, more recently since SEQ Water has taken over the park and they have done some major redevelopment. If you haven’t already seen it, you will be surprised and impressed. The walking tracks and boardwalks are excellent as they wind through the forest and take you to platforms with lovely views over the lake.
There are interesting interpretation boards with information about local flora and fauna for people like me who like to attempt to remember the common names. There’s barbecue facilities, toilets, tables and benches and a playground for kids, all set to a background of birds singing in the bush and the lovely smell of the Australian eucalypts. And now that the weather is warming up you can expect to see families taking advantage of the swimming area with its sandy beach entry. Entry is off Mooloolah Connection Road next to the newly upgraded BMX circuit and the gates are opened between 6.00am – 6.00pm seven days a week.
If you would like to share your favourite secret spot with other Glasshouse Country locals then let me know where it is - email rick.baberowski@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au
Congratulations to Landsborough Child Care Centre. As part of National Tree Day celebrations in July, the preschoolers participated in a competition, and made a banner which showed how they speak for the trees. Last week, they received the exciting news that their entry had won, out of more than 120 entries across the country. For all their hard efforts, Landsborough Child Care Centre has won a private screening of Dr. Seuss' The Lorax, and a Universal Sony DVD library worth $1,000. A special thanks to Council, who donated seedlings to the children, which they were able to take home and plant. www.gcnews.com.au

Sharing our unique spirit
Individuals and community group representatives are invited to come along to an ideas sharing session to create a vibrant mix of events for the Glasshouse Country Festival, to be held October 18 – 27, 2013. The topic for the evening will be how would you like to see our regions diverse range of culture, arts, environment, heritage, sports and other qualities celebrated. Anyone that lives in one of the townships of Glasshouse Country will have their own unique reasons for living in and loving our local area. You may have been born and bred here or you may have chosen to move here, but one thing is certain the passion for our area runs deep. The ideas sharing session will attempt to harness that passion for our local area and to start laying the foundations for a truly spectacular festival. Individual community groups do not always have the resources and skills to organise a big event but by working together we will be able to share some of the workload. The festival is a great way for your group to create awareness of your activities, increase your membership and also to fundraise. So if you think you would like to come along on the night it is 5.30pm for 6.00pm start and a light supper will be served. Please RSVP (for catering purposes) to Sarah at Glasshouse Country News on 5438 7445 or email info@glasshousecountryfestival.com.au
When staying behind at school is a privilege
Most kids can’t wait to escape the school grounds when the bell rings at the end of the day. But not the students who attend Mooloolah After School Care program. Instead of rushing out of the school gates, they are rushing to find out what’s on the menu for afternoon tea at the purpose built facility, located between the school and the Mooloolah pool, that the service has operated out of since 2006. According to centre coordinator Belinda Mewes the community based, not-for-profit service, managed by the school’s P&C, is a valuable support for both working and non working parents. “We provide a quality, government approved and licensed before and after school care program, along with a comprehensive vacation program which can be accessed by all families with school aged children,” Belinda said. She said the program isn’t exclusive to students of Mooloolah School, or to those families with The program's pet parents juggling work commitments. guinea pig “Because of features such as the Active After School program that we offer, many families utilise the service because it’s a good way for their children to try out different activities,” Belinda said. “Twice a week, we have external providers come in and deliver sports such as swimming, karate, badminton and volleyball as part of our program, at no additional cost to the fees we charge families to access the after school hours service. “This has become a very popular way for mums and dads to get their children to try out sports that they otherwise may not have,” she said. The service also offers a homework program, which encourages and supports students to complete their homework, as well as a host of educational and recreational resources. Belinda said students have also just started tending their own plot at the nearby Community Gardens, gaining valuable insight into growing and harvesting their own produce. Fun, of course, is also on the agenda, with the centres two new laptops with internet access, a flat screen television, a WII gaming console, an undercover play area, and pet guinea pigs to keep the students engaged and entertained. The building also boasts its own kitchen, which allows the students to take a hands-on approach to cooking. And with the September school holidays just around the corner, now is the time to book in for the service’s exciting ‘Spring has Sprung’ vacation care program, which is highlighted by excursions to Australia Zoo and Chipmunks. For more information or to book, contact the service on 5494 7491. www.gcnews.com.au

Hearts over habits
Which would you prefer for a next-door neighbour: a person of excellent habits or a person with a good heart? Which would you prefer for a good friend: a person of excellent habits, or a person with a good heart? Which would you prefer for a husband or a wife: a person of excellent habits, or a person with a good heart? When you discuss good behaviour, you’re discussing the quality of a person's selfcontrol. When you discuss a good heart, you’re discussing the quality of the person. There’s an interesting episode in Chapter seven of Mark’s Gospel where Jesus is attacked by the ‘religious’ police of his day when his disciples fail to wash their hands prior to eating. ‘Why don't your disciples live according to the traditions of the elders and clean their hands before they eat?’ This is all that Jesus needs to hear. He sticks up for his disciples, turns on these teachers and says in essence, ‘Why don't you live according to the traditions of God and clean your hearts?’ Our tradition shouldn’t kill our compassion. Br John Stevenson OGS Glasshouse Anglican Community When people are in need and love is called upon we should set aside our human rules and act with a human heart. God prefers deeds to creeds, love over law and hearts over habits. Jesus implores us not to look at the outside habits of other people but rather the inside motives. Dirty hands do not make a dirty heart. From within, Jesus said, not from without. It’s greed not grime, malice not money, deceit not dust, arrogance not alcohol that makes us unclean. Religious rituals will not cleanse us from envy, slander, and arrogance. All these evils, Jesus said, come from inside and make us ‘unclean.’ God is interested in good hearts not good habits. He’s interested in the inside not the outside. When it comes to faith and life, let me ask you a question: Are you’re hearts in it or only your fingers? Are you allowing God's renewing grace to work in you from deep within? For God requires deeds not creeds, love rather than law, and hearts over habits.

CLAIMING MOTOR VEHICLE EXPENSES Is your Motor Vehicle an integral part of your business? If so, you could claim a deduction for the business use of the vehicle using one of four methods. 1. A set rate per km based on engine size up to a maximum of 5000km and other than mileage, no other records are required. 2. 12% of Original Value – you must travel more than 5000 business kilometres to use this method. Again no other records are required except mileage. www.gcnews.com.au
3. One Third of Actual Expenses – you must travel more than 5000 business kilometres in the year and all motor vehicle expenses must be kept to support your claim. 4. Logbook – you need to keep a logbook showing odometer readings to calculate business percentage and this is applied to ALL motor vehicle expenses incurred. If you qualify to use more than one method you can use whichever gives you the largest deduction or is the most convenient.
You cannot claim the cost of travel between home and work unless you are carrying bulky items for work. We can help you determine which is the best method to suit your situation. As an additional note for all the entrepreneurs, if you have signwriting on the side of your car you can still only claim one of the above 4 methods. Sitting your car outside your home on the street does not deem it being used for work. Its just free advertising!!

New grant to help first home owners and construction industry Glass House first home buyers and the construction industry are set to benefit from the most generous ongoing first home owner grant in Australia in the Newman Government's first budget. Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell said first home buyers would receive $15,000 up from $7,000 - when purchasing a newly constructed home or property off the plan, under the re-shaped First Home Owner Construction Grant (formerly First Home Owner Grant). "This new grant will benefit first home buyers and give the local construction industry a much needed boost," Mr Powell said.

"First home owners buying a newly constructed or off-the-plan property who sign a contract on or after September 12 will receive $15,000, a great head start on paying off their mortgage. Mr Powell said this generous grant was aimed at making home ownership more affordable. "We've already wiped $7,000 off the cost of buying the family home by reinstating the principal place of residence transfer duty concession. The local construction industry is also set to benefit from the targeted and ongoing initiative. "The construction industry is one of the four pillars of the Queensland economy, along with tourism, agriculture and resources," Mr Powell said. "It is a major job generator and important to our local economy and the First Home Owners Construction Grant will help get the sector powering along again."

Bromeliad Beauty
Contributed by The Glasshouse Country Bromeliad Society Inc
With spring upon us, the weather can be a little unpredictable. It could rain but it could also be dry for periods (as we’ve been experiencing), so you may need to splash a bit of water around your bromeliads. The plant having an open well drained potting mix can be starting to dry out so water the plant filling the cup and give Aechmea blanchetiana – grown the pot a good drink. in shade and grown in sun If we get rain over the next few months it will be ideal conditions for disease to infect your plants, so a maintenance program should be put in place. You need to ensure the plants have good airflow, give plants a top up with high potassium (K) fertiliser and for black spot and white scale, a spray with Dimethoate 300 at a rate of 1ml/litre of water. In a recent column, I wrote about the spectacular Aechmea blanchetiana, which is flowering at present. I would like to share more information about this species. This bromeliad could be said to be Aechmea blanchetiana – red form the princess of the bromeliad family – majestic plant that grows to more than one metre across, commanding attention. The fiery orange leaf-colouring is unusual in the plant world and so very useful in a landscaper’s portfolio of colour. This plant is extensively used in tropical and subtropical landscapes in northern Australia, but is not suitable for use outdoors in temperate climates in latitudes below Sydney. This large and imposing bromeliad is from the sandy soils of coastal Brazil. Its glossy green leaves that turn bronze can reach a span of over 1 metre. The branched, feathery yellow and red flower spike reaches up to 2 metres high, making it an excellent feature plant in sunny, rocky landscapes. The most dramatic leaf colour develops when the plants are grown in full sun and are slightly hungry (short of nutrition) in soils similar to its native sandy environment. A number of different cultivars, both unnamed and named, are becoming available, such as red, gold, orange and yellow. These are well worth growing, although there is considerable debate over whether these are true cultivars or just variations caused by light and nutritional differences. Environmental factors have a huge impact on the expression of genetic traits such as colour in this species, and several others like it. Even two plants planted in pots side by side can vary, simply because the potting mix may have not been evenly blended and therefore contain slightly different nutrient levels.
The Glasshouse Country Bromeliad Society Inc will next meet on October 7, 2.00pm at 7 Gwen Court, Landsborough. Please bring your own chair and cup for afternoon tea. To find out more contact Pat Pennell on 5438 7375.

1/28 Simpson St, Beerwah Q. 4519
Open Garden - Buderim ‘Ryhope Gardens’, at 10 Ryhope Street, Buderim, with beautiful park-like landscapes and sweeping coastal, mountain and hinterland views, is truly breathtaking. Garden owner Lisa Schultz cheerfully, and perhaps rather modestly, describes herself as “possibly Australia’s worst gardener.” Despite this tongue-in-cheek self-diagnosis, she has been able to lovingly tend to and develop the four-acre garden with the continued guidance of its original designers. “We thoroughly enjoy living in this beautiful garden, but take no credit for it whatsoever. We have been lucky to have the support of the original designers and although we have redeveloped some of the beds, it has essentially remained true to its original 1976 design,” says Lisa. “We’re also very fortunate to have the rich red Buderim soil and an excellent supply of underground water, which makes growing plants and keeping things alive pretty foolproof.” As you enter the property, an expanse of lawn is home to a delightful teahouse under a canopy of Tipuana tipu – a lovely spot to sit and ponder. A clump of very old hoop pines shelters a rainforest garden, where diffenbacias, aglomenas and banks of dramatic bromeliads follow the contour of a stormwater channel. During heavy rain this becomes a stunning water feature. The property is part of Open Gardens Australia, and will be open on October 6 and 7, 10.00am to 4.30pm. Entry is only $7.00 (under 18 free) with the proceeds going to Wishlist – a Sunshine Coast hospital foundation that raises money to support local public health services. Go Green Rainforest Nursery Plant of the Week Mozzie Blocker Leptospermum liversidgei cultivar The weather is warming up and here in SE QLD that means being around the pool and barbecue in the evening. Unfortunately the mozzies are also out and about but there is a plant you can use in your garden that looks great and helps repel these summer pests. ‘Mozzie Blocker’ is a selected form of a local tea tree that has high concentrations of citronella oil in its leaves. The citronella oil saturates the air and stuns passing mozzies making them easy prey for insectivorous birds such as Wrens and Willy Wag Tails. In the ground it makes a lovely dense shrub to 1.5m with dense fine foliage. In Spring it will delight you with stunning soft pink flowers. If you would like more information on this tree or any other native plants, drop in and see Simon or Melissa at Go Green Rainforest Nursery, 2620 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview. Phone 5494 5980. Mountain climbs to help Cambodian girls reach uni Mount Ngungun and Mount Tibrogargan are two of the five mountains Glass House Mountains local Samantha Willcocks, 23, and fellow Sunshine Coast University student Rachele Wilson, 24, plan to climb from Friday, September 28 to Sunday, September 30 to raise funds for Australian charity Free to Shine. Arts/Science student Samantha — who regularly climbs peaks in her home town of Glass House Mountains — said the mountain climbing challenge could metaphorically represent the achievements of Cambodian women. After tackling our local mountains they will take on Mount Coolum, Mount Cooroora and Mount Tinbeerwah. The girls are taking on the challenge to give poverty-stricken girls and women in Cambodia a chance to study at university and escape the clutches of human trafficking. This organisation provides education scholarships to children and women in Cambodia who have been rescued from or identified as ‘at risk’ of sex slavery and human trafficking. “Mountain climbing symbolises the hard slog of getting a university degree. Once these women are at the top and have qualified, they have the power to change their communities,” Samantha said. “I think it’s disgusting what happens over there to women and children and it really doesn’t take much time or money to change someone’s life,” she said. “Being a mother myself, it really pulls at the heartstrings and I just want these girls to have a future.” The duo is looking for people to sponsor them or join them in their climbing efforts. For more details just google 5mountainsin3days.
Senior and junior coaching and team officials for the 2013 season The Beerwah Bulldogs are seeking coaches, trainers & officials for boy’s teams for all ages from U7 to U16, girl’s U15 & U18, & senior coaches & officials for all grades including senior women. Application forms for coaches and officials can be obtained by contacting Dean Roberts on 0418 816 605 (seniors) or Kay Jones on 5494 6430 (juniors). Applications close 28th September 2012.

Just for Laughs Oh by the way….
While on a road trip, an elderly couple stopped at a roadside restaurant for lunch. After finishing their meal, they left the restaurant, and resumed their trip. When leaving, the elderly woman unknowingly left her glasses on the table, and she didn't miss them until they had been driving for about 40 minutes. By then, to add to the aggravation, they had to travel quite a distance before they could find a place to turn around, in order to return to the restaurant to retrieve her glasses.
All the way back, the elderly husband became the classic grouchy old man. He fussed and complained, and scolded his wife relentlessly during the entire return drive. The more he chided her, the more agitated he became. He just wouldn’t let up for a single minute. To her relief, they finally arrived at the restaurant... As the woman got out of the car, and hurried inside to retrieve her glasses, the old geezer yelled to her, “while you're in there, you might as well get my hat, and the credit card.” Submitted by Kim Hansen, Landsborough
