Hi Everyone Well what other topic could I possibly be going to write about this week then the Olympic Games.

It is pretty hard even for someone who hasn’t got any athletic bone in their body to ignore all the media coverage it is receiving at the moment.

Sadly I do fall into the ‘non athletic type category’ however anyone who knows me knows how much I love bright shiny objects and any kind of ‘bling’ and I am an absolute sucker for spectacular fireworks.

So while I didn’t have the attention span to watch the whole of the Olympics Opening Ceremony – and I couldn’t really understand what the link between children in hospital beds and dancing nurses were at ‘the games’ it was definitely a visual spectacle – with quite a few images that had me absolutely enthralled.

In this week’s edition we have

included a story about how the Olympic spirit has also inspired some of the residents at Embracia.

We also have a fabulous story about one very special Embracia resident who has recently celebrated her own significant achievement – not winning a gold medal – but even better, celebrating her 100th birthday, congratulations to Toni Wood for this special achievement.

Locals will have a chance to bid for jewellery from a Brisbane auction house when Peachester hosts its first ever jewellery auction in aid of the Cancer Council Queensland later this month.

In what is thought to be a first for the hinterland, the event, to be held at Peachester Hall on Sunday, August 19, is expected to showcase a wide range of quality jewellery at bargain prices.

Also up for grabs is a chance to win $7,500.00 worth of jewellery in a raffle, with all proceeds to the Cancer Council Queensland.

The first prize in the raffle draw, a white gold emerald ring, is valued at $4,605.00

Second prize, an emerald tennis bracelet, is valued at $2,250.00

Third prize, a pair of diamond stud earrings valued at $681.00

Event organiser and cancer survivor Margarita PrioriSmith, who has been volunteering and fundraising for Margarita Priori-Smith the Cancer Council Queensland for a number of years, said those intending to come along must book by August 12.

“Seats are strictly limited, and we’re hoping for a great crowd at this event, the first of its kind for the hinterland,” Margarita said.

Margarita said the event was a great opportunity for the hinterland, with similar events usually held on the coast and in more populated areas.

“It’s exciting to see a jewellery auction being held locally, so I encourage locals to get behind it, and support the Cancer Council Queensland at the same time,” she said.

First prize in the raffle is a 14ct white gold 1.51ct oval cut natural emerald and .13ct multi round cut diamond ring, valued at $4,605.00.

Second prize is a sterling silver 2.5ct multi round cut natural emerald tennis bracelet, valued at $2,250.00, while third prize is a pair of 10ct white gold .10ct round cut diamond ear studs (value $681.00).

Margarita will be outside Woolworths at the Beerwah Marketplace this Saturday, August 4 from 9.00am - 1.00pm, and at the Beerwah Supa IGA on Saturday, August 11, from 9.00am - 1.00pm, taking bookings for the event and selling raffle tickets. Creative tip: font spacing

Does it annoy you when just one small word overflows onto the next line of your paragraph? When space is limited or visual effect is important, an extra line here and there makes all the difference.

Apart from editing, there is an easy way to ‘lose’ that last line, and make the words fit neatly into one block of print – you can ‘squeeze’ the letters together by condensing the font spacing!

Select the paragraph or line/s or words to format.

Find and click on the ‘Font’ dialogue box selector on the toolbar. Select ‘Advanced’. Find the words ‘Character Spacing’ and below see the option ‘Spacing’; choose ‘Condensed ’from the drop-down menu (it also offers expanded and normal), then to the right, choose a factor for condensing.

If you need very little, try 0.1 to start, click on OK, then check the paragraph effect. If you need more condensing, gradually increase until that extra word pops back up to the line above. Make sure the font is still readable – too much condensing will be noticeable or illegible. With practice, you become good at knowing approximately how much to apply.

Similarly, you can expand the font spacing for changed visual effect. Have fun!

Exciting new changes on menu at Moby Vics To locals, it shares an iconic status with the region’s pineapples and mountain peaks, but unlike it’s ageless counterparts, Moby Vics, on the Bruce Highway, is about to undergo a multimillion dollar facelift.

Plans of a change of brand and massive upgrades were confirmed by the Walker family last week on the eve of the expiry of the current 25 year lease.

Family spokesman Drew Walker said Shell would take over the lease of the service station, and it would be fitted out as a Coles Express outlet, and discussions are still being held with fast food outlet Hungry Jacks to operate a food outlet at the site.

Mr Walker said the family, who owns the land both the service station and adjacent shops are located on, said they were very happy about the proposed changes.

“The site has been looking a little bit tired in the past 12 months, so we are all looking forward to the change in ownership, and bringing it up to standard,” Drew said.

Drew said the tenants in the adjacent shops were also excited by the changes, and would continue to trade during the refurbishment of the service centre.

Mark Hobbs, owner of Beefy’s, said having a new and exciting service centre would be great for the site.

He said while they were expecting a significant decrease to the passing traffic during refurbishment of the service centre, he was confident that people will still stop for a Beefy’s pie.

“We will continue trading during the renovations, open as per normal seven days a week, so our customers can be confident in knowing they can get their Beefy’s fix,” Mark said.

Mr Walker said the current lease, held by 7-11, expires at the end of September, however they were expected to close their doors this week.

He said Shell had confirmed it would take eight weeks to fit out the site, expecting to reopen by the end of November at the very latest.

He confirmed the southbound site will be renovated first, followed by the northbound site.

Our Centenarian, Toni Centenarian Toni Wood was a bit surprised by all the fuss when she celebrated her 100th birthday recently.

The resident at Embracia, who admits to being a bit of a chatterbox, couldn’t quite understand why everyone, from the staff and other residents, to her relatives and local media, was so excited by her achievement.

But it isn’t every day we get the opportunity to celebrate such a milestone achievement, we told her.

So it was fitting that on July 22, the date of Toni’s 100th birthday, that Embracia pulled out all the stops with a high tea celebration to mark the grand occasion, which she shared with a host of fellow residents, relatives, friends and Embracia staff.

When we asked Toni for the secret to living such a long and healthy life, she said there were none.

“The only thing I can suggest is not to worry,” Toni said.

“Only worry about the things you can do something about.”

“Worrying about something you can’t control doesn’t help anyone,” she said.

And it was a pearl of wisdom many of us could benefit from.

Toni, a former relieving post mistress, had many stories to share about her colourful life. From her younger years living on a farm in Buderim with her five brothers and sister, to her adventures as a relieving post mistress, sharing one too many secrets with the locals she befriended as she travelled from town to town in the south east of the state, it was evident that Toni has enjoyed her journey through the years.

And there were also the stories of her days playing sport. From tennis, golf and basketball, there’s no doubt her love of sport and physical activity has helped Toni maintain her good health, quick wit and conversation skills.

Congratulations Toni, our local centenarian.

The Olympic spirit was alive and well at Embracia last week, as residents and staff prepared themselves for the onset of Olympicmania, complete with some gold medal winning performances.

From the Wheelie Walker relay to the staff Equestrian event, there was plenty of blood, sweat and tears with records broken (fortunately no bones!) and new champions declared.

She’s a cancer survivor, a mother, a grandmother, and a step great grandmother, and now she can add the title of Calendar Girl to her list of achievements.

And it’s a title that means a lot to Beerwah’s Heather Rutherford, who incidentally also celebrated her 74th birthday last week.

For the past 30 years, Heather has lived with the condition called Lymphoedema, which is characterised by the swelling of limbs due to a build-up of lymphatic fluid. In Heather’s case, the diagnosis came after a battle against breast cancer. Following a mastectomy and the removal of her lymph nodes, it wasn’t until 11 years later that Heather noticed her left arm starting to swell.

“But I never gave up hope, and these days, there is just so much more information about it there’s support groups, state based associations, newsletters and ongoing research, however there is still a lot of ignorance about the condition, so I want to share my story in the hope to create awareness,” Heather said.

“It’s a controllable condition, not a condition that has to control your life,” she said.

So when she was presented with the opportunity to participate in a new awareness raising campaign, she jumped at the chance.

Hence she became Ms January, alongside her two granddaughters, Darcie and Piper.

Heather is living proof that Lymphoedema doesn’t have to be a life sentence, and she’s quick to point out that living with the condition hasn’t stopped her from leading a very full and active life.

“In the early days of my diagnosis, I used to sleep with my arm elevated, I was trialling a number of different medications, and was told to walk around with my arm on my head.

New bushcare group in Beerwah Women’s social group kicks off

Last week, women of all ages and backgrounds took the opportunity to get together to celebrate the launch of the Glass House Women’s Social Group at the Glasshouse Neighbourhood Centre.

The newest community bushcare group on the Sunshine Coast is off and running and is already having some great environmental wins.

The Coochin Creek Bushland Group had their second working bee recently, and the enthusiastic band of locals tackled an area of weeds near the cascades within the Coochin Creek Environmental Reserve at the back of the Woodgrove Estate, Beerwah.

The group convenor, Roger Callen, said the fledgling group is already making a difference.

“We’ve cleaned up rubbish and dumped garden clippings, removed weeds and are planning for some tree plantings,” he said.

Supported by Sunshine Cost Council through their Community Nature Conservation program, the group is looking for new members who are interested in working to improve a beautiful and largely unknown piece of local bushland.

The reserve and surrounds are home to over 60 species of birds, with a diverse range of plants and fungi. The area is an important wildlife corridor link from the Coochin Twins National Park, down behind the Beerwah High School and linking into the bushland areas south of Steve Irwin Way. They meet on the third Friday of the month for around three hours in the morning.

Roger says that no particular skills are needed, just a sense of fun and a willingness to enjoy a bit of nature.

“Once you get involved, there are opportunities to learn about plants, native animals and to attend free workshops put on by Council,” said Roger.

Community Development Worker for the Hinterland Community Development Association, Natasha Odgers said she was pleased by the level of interest and participation at the launch event.

“It was so pleasing to see so many women of a variety of ages come to the launch. There were a lot of similar interests around the group and the future activities of the group will be guided by participant’s interests. We welcome anyone to come along anytime,” Natasha said.

The group meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 2.00pm - 3.30pm at the Glasshouse Neighbourhood Centre.

Putting a new spin on U.G.L.Y Well-known local Mandi Steensen is far from ugly, but she is definitely U.G.L.Y – Understanding, Generous, Likeable, You, so it’s no wonder the popular Beerwah Hotel employee has signed up for the Leukaemia Foundation’s latest fundraising initiative.

Until September 3, Mandi, along with three other big-hearted bartenders from the Sunshine Coast, will get into the fundraising spirit and battle it out to become the Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland’s 2012 U.G.L.Y. bartender of the year.

The competition is being held across the state in pubs, hotels, sporting clubs and RSLs, with proceeds benefiting patients and their families living with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders.

Mandi, who has been working at the Beerwah Hotel for the past three years, said she is passionate about the cause after her aunty was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer.

“Although she is in remission now, I know others too, who have lost their battle with cancer, so I was happy to sign up for the U.G.L.Y competition to help raise awareness,” Mandi said.

Mandi is already well on her way on her fundraising quest, having already raised $450.00 from a kissing booth at the Beerwah Hotel late last month, and is busy preparing for a host of unique fundraising events to be held this month, including cockroach races, an old classic car run, and an U.G.L.Y morning tea.

The cockroach races, which will take on an Olympic theme, will be held every Sunday in August at the hotel from 1.00pm, with the willing competitors being kindly donated by Animal House in Beerwah.

On August 12, around 15 cars from the Caboolture Regional Car Club will go on show at the venue from around 12.00noon, with some great prizes on offer from local businesses, and then the Hotel will host an U.G.L.Y Morning Tea on August 22. Tickets for this event, which includes a fashion parade by Chic Effects and raffles, are only $10.00, and are available for purchase from the Beerwah Hotel.

Thanks to Mooloolah IGA, the Leavy family of Mooloolah will be able to have a fantastic holiday at Seaworld just by purchasing their milk at the store.

A former Beerwah State High Dux has gone on to receive a Doctor of Philosophy in the field of Polymer Chemistry.

Kirsten Lawrie, who was awarded the Dux of Beerwah State High in 2001, studied science at the University of Queensland, graduating with First Class Honours in Science in 2005.

After a year of travel and working, Kirsten began her PhD studies at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology at the University of Queensland, where she prepared her thesis, Extreme Ultraviolet Irradiation of Poly(olefin sulphone)s: Towards Applications as EUV Lithographic Materials.

Kirsten, who believes science is fun, spent time during her studies at university encouraging other students to learn more about the subject, conducting science shows on university open days. This included the Magic Science Show at the UQ 100 year celebration, something which her mother, Glasshouse resident Gloria Lawrie suggests could be attributed to her former Beerwah High chemistry teacher, Mr Bateman, who still teaches at Beerwah High today.

It’s hard to believe the annual Beerwah Charity Sports Day is now less than four weeks away!

This year, the major raffle running in conjunction with the Sports Day features three main prizes.

They are a garden cart filled with all sorts of products, a bicycle for the kids, and thirdly, a voucher worth $450.00 from Fitness Matters of Beerwah. Dancer’s dream trip of a lifetime All her life, Lauren Reeves has dreamed of being a professional dancer or dance teacher, so when she heard about an opportunity to perform in the United States, she literally jumped at the chance.

When 18-year-old Lauren from Glass House Mountains isn’t dancing, she is busy fundraising for what she refers to as a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Having been dancing for the past 10 years, Lauren, who has only a few more exams to sit before she becomes a qualified dance teacher, can hardly contain her excitement about her upcoming trip with her dance school.

She and 16 other students from the dance school will travel to the United States in November for an intense 16 day program which covers every aspect of dance and performance, including performances at Disneyland and on a cruise ship, and workshops in Los Angeles with some of the States’ top choreographers.

“I’m most looking forward to performing at Disneyland, as well as the workshops with some of the American choreographers,” Lauren said.

“This is like a dream come true, a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I’m just so excited,” she said.

Lauren’s mum will make the trip with her, and the pair has been busy selling raffle tickets, doing chocolate drives, and setting up a stall at the Landsborough Markets in their fundraising quest, and are grateful for the support they’ve received so far.

“A number of local businesses, including Bassett Barks, Serendipity, Smiley’s, Flair Jewellery, and Cedar House Homewares, have donated prizes and money, and I am really thankful for their support,” Lauren said.

The first round of funding is now open with individual grants ranging between $2,000 and $100,000—helping local communities tackle environmental degradation in their own neighbourhoods.

Grants are available for projects that clean up, repair and restore the local environment, like tree-planting and land restoration, land and waterway clean-ups, water quality improvement and monitoring pollutants in streams.

Eligibility is broad and open to community service organisations, including parents and citizens’ groups; Landcare, Coastcare, Bushcare, Rivercare groups; established and emerging Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander groups;scout groups; Rotary and Lions groups; catchment groups; environmental and conservation organisations; Natural Resource Management (NRM) and other like-minded volunteer groups.

Initiatives under the Everyone's Environment grants program support practical projects which help clean-up and bring about real improvements at the local level.

Learning is lots of fun!

Students in Year 2/3 at Mooloolah State School had a great time in Semester 1 with an ongoing project that, unbeknown to them, pulled together many facets of the curriculum they were covering!

First they had to design a toy for a young child, which would move; incorporating information about ‘push and pull forces’ and movement that they had investigated and learned in their science lessons. Designing the toys involved a good deal of imagination, research, planning and design!

The students then had to find and collect recycled materials to construct their toys. Toys included trains, planes and automobiles.There were also pull along carts, a parachute, a puppet and boats! Once built, the students had loads of fun decorating and embellishing the toys to make them truly irresistible for young children.

The students then learned about marketing and advertising, and scoured toy catalogues to identify the language, images and tactics that advertisers use to lure us to buy their products. This fun activity equipped the students to give their toys catchy names, and to design enticing advertising themes!

They then used publishing software and created eye catching posters to promote their creations.

Finally, the students created their own toy shop in their classroom, and proudly displayed their toys before presenting them to their buddy partners in ‘Mooloolah Prep’ and explaining to their young friends how the toys worked.

Retirement and farewell for Sandy Reigos Beerwah State School has celebrated the 36 year teaching career of Mrs Sandy Reigos. Mrs Reigos started teaching at Beerwah State School in 1995, teaching Prep for 14 years.

When asked to share some moments that she cherishes she said the Easter Bunny hunt, and her small charges acting as pirates searching each classroom in the school for gold, as well as watching her students develop talents and skills to last for life.

She has also thanked staff, parents and students for their support and friendship over the years.

Beerwah State High School rewarded for teaching excellence Beerwah State High School has been recognised for its excellent Indigenous Education program.

Beerwah High is a state finalist for ‘Excellence in Inclusive Education’ in recognition of its ‘Bigger Bolder Brighter’ program. ‘Bigger Bolder Brighter’ is Beerwah State High School’s flexible and individualised approach that focuses on improving outcomes for indigenous students.

The ‘Bigger Bolder Brighter’ program has developed strong partnerships with outside agencies to support the development of indigenous student leadership. Organisations such as Former Origin Greats and Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience provide many resources and run activities in the school.

Other government organisations such as Queensland Health have supported the school, providing grants for the running of cultural celebrations and development of indigenous student leadership. Beerwah’s indigenous students organised community events such as Beerwah High’s ‘Healing Day’ that brought Gubbi Gubbi Elders and surrounding primary school students together to participate in cultural activities.

The ‘Bigger Bolder Brighter’ program has provided Indigenous student’s with more confidence in themselves.

Through targeted strategies, 76 per cent of indigenous students have improved their attendance over the past three years. The gap between indigenous and non-indigenous absences has halved. Indigenous student’s continuing to study at school in Year 10 to 12 is 23 per cent better than non-indigenous students.

Beerwah High is ‘closing the gap’.

Beerwah High is one of 27 state finalists for Showcase awards for excellence. The eight state winners will be announced at the Showcase Gala Dinner on Friday, October 12, each will receive a further $20,000 in development grants.

The awards are judged by the Showcase Board which includes educational experts and media and industry representatives.

Rose Leigh Bush Tucker Cafe at Glenview Gardens, Glenview, is a new edition to the local food scene and word is spreading fast about this unique setting and what they have on offer. Last week we went along to check out their Friday and Saturday A la carte menu. Stepping onto the pathway entrance it was like entering a fairy wonderland with the muted lighting showcasing beautiful gardens to the background sounds of the soothing Balinese style water feature.

The Restaurant owner Stephen has put together a menu which provided something for everyone’s tastes – well it definitely seemed to impress everyone I spoke with on the night. I had an entree and a main meal that were perfect and if I could have fitted it in dessert I would have gone for the Bread and Butter Pudding ... sadly I will have to make a return visit to try that one out! The Cafe is open for breakfast and lunch from Tuesday to Sunday from 8.00am and for dinner on Friday and Saturday evenings from 6.00pm.

Half yearly rates notices out now

Sunshine Coast Council rates notices have started to arrive in the letterboxes and email inboxes for Sunshine Coast properties.

The mail out is the first rate run of the 2012/13 financial year with rate payments due by August 17, and ratepayers can now register to receive future notices by email.

Council continues to make it as convenient as possible to pay rates with a range of payment options available including online at anytime of the day through council's website by registering for MyCouncil and then Online Services, or via Bpay if registered with your financial institution; by phone using a credit card on 131 816 from anywhere in Australia; in person at any branch of Australia Post, with cash, cheque or EFTPOS; in person at one of council’s Customer Contact Centres open 8.30am - 4.30pm Monday to Friday (locations listed on the bottom of your Rate Notice); by mail using cheque or money order to Sunshine Coast Council Locked Bag 72, Sunshine Coast Mail Centre 4560.

To assist with your online or over-the-phone payments please have your payment reference number from your rates notice handy. Ratepayers who cannot make payment by the due date can enter into an arrangement to pay by instalments. Community Group Updates Beerwah Writers Launch ‘Five Minute Tales’ ‘Five Minute Tales’ is the first of a three times a year literary magazine recently launched by the Beerwah Writers' Group. Each issue will contain a number of short contributions by members of the group across a range of subjects, genres and styles.

The magazine will give members the opportunity to showcase their work to the local community and it will be of particular benefit in encouraging those writers who have never or rarely had their work published previously.

It will also offer the public who buy the magazine an opportunity to read and appreciate the diversity of literary talents of their local authors.

We hope too that it may encourage others to join the group and to share their writing interests and experience with us.

Peachester CWA Contributed by Coral Beutel, Hon Pres With the start of the new financial year, our branch is going strong.

We have honoured all our commitments and have given donations to women and children of East Timor, photography, floral art, knitting and crochet, and cooking committees, Rosies of Caloundra, Hear and Say, Flying Doctor, Young Care, QLD Cancer Fund and Ruth Fairfax Howe as well as Peachester State School’s Kitchen Garden. Our share of the money raised at our International Day with Beerwah was sent to the Addis Ababa Fistuld Hospital in Ethiopia.

At our AGM all standing members were re-elected. Coral Beutel President, Joan Kropp Vice President, Margaret Ferris Secretary, Bev Wild Treasurer and International Officer Cath Howitt.

The guest speaker on the day was Gordon Howitt who spoke about orienteering. With wife Cath and a stick model he made it all sound very easy and interesting. Gordon was presented with a beautiful fruit basket from the Peachester Fruit Shop. His wife Cath then went on to win the raffle – a fruit tray! Tickets are available for the jewellery auction raffle for cancer on Sunday, August 19. I have seen the jewellery prizes and they are simply gorgeous. Please register if you are coming to the auction as Peachester CWA are going to cater. Our next markets are on September 22.

The Glasshouse Mountains Musicians Club Contributed by Dr Michael Whiticker It was another great night for musicians and their friends at the Musos Club session at Beerwah RSL this last Thursday, July 26 with 12 acts including four new performers.

Amongst our ‘fresh’ artists were Sherry Anderson, Mary Martin, Steve Steaton and Aaron Tregea. Sherry treated us with her lovely, strong voice and original songs as did Mary, who displayed a fine sensibility as a songwriter and played a beautiful old Hohner guitar which had a number of our guitar lovers salivating.

It was great to see a solo instrumentalist in Aaron Tregea, who displayed impressive musicality in his guitar performance.

Amongst Steve Seaton’s songs was ‘How can a poor stand such times and live’, written in 1928 by Blind Alfred Reed. Steve prefaced his performance with reference to the parts of New Orleans that were allowed to flood both in the recent floods and also those of 1929, and of course they were the poorer areas where the largely black population live. I enjoyed his song introductions taking us into the world in which the songs were created or in which he found inspiration.

Peter Gawith entertained us with two songs from the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack, including the powerful ‘Po Lazarus’ which saw him unaccompanied on the drum kit. Leanne Zadkovitch performed some beautiful originals for us including one – ‘The little things’, written for her partner who was in the audience. Other performers included Rose Palmer – who, along with Leanne we are pleased to welcome back after some months away, Glen Major and regulars Greg Bryant, Frank Moroney, Mick Od and the Merkins.

I am enjoying Mick Od’s development as an artist. A new original he featured allowed his backing band, who until then hadn’t heard the song, to cook up a storm! The Merkins set featured Paul Fagan on one song as vocalist and banjo player, and included a version of ‘A whiter shade of pale’ sung beautifully by Greg.

We are always welcoming new faces and I do hope to see some of you again at our next session on the second Thursday of the month at Glasshouse Sports Club. Club enquiries may be directed to Dr Michael Whiticker on 5493 0046.

Beerwah CWA News The branch annual meeting voted for Donna-Kay Donovan to remain as President. Del Davis has moved to the Treasurer position.

Plans are afoot to make up ‘birthing kits’ for use by women in the countries that have no facilities (births are under the trees, in the dirt). Come along to the next CWA Meeting at 1.00pm, August 7 and be part of this muchneeded project. This is only one of the many things planned as future projects.

To meet the need for the busy mums and the working women in the community, the branch are having an evening meeting for a get together and a chat. Bring along your craft and show us or you can indicate what you would like to learn. We have women available to teach a variety of things.

The art of improvisation: Part 2 Last month I began to look at the art of improvisation and it is really in jazz today where we see improvisation, some would say, at its greatest.

Jazz is built on the expectation that solos will be taken and those solos are largely improvised. However, jazz solos also work within guidelines, so it could be argued that jazz improvisation is more ‘fast composition’ and less ‘in the moment’ than so called ‘free improvisation’. Does that matter?

The art of improvisation varies from one musical tradition to the next.

In the great Indian classical music tradition each piece of music is built on a melodic mode (raja) and a rhythmic pattern (tala), and it is the exploration of the given material ‘in the moment’ which displays the skill of the performer. It is an art form built on improvisation, yet within this tradition there are strict expectations of the mood or emotion that will be evoked by the artist. They must also adhere to a known structure: a slow presentation of the raja, developing, often over hours, into highly elaborate music which displays great technical prowess. Also their performance is based on the teaching and playing of that same raja by their master or ‘guru’.

The Western jazz tradition is similar in that regard as players will develop their ‘chops’ based on a style - such as Bebop, and often a player who worked within that style - such as Charlie Parker. If the art of improvisation in music is based on styles and the work of others can there be such a thing as free musical improvisation? There can, though we will probably have to look outside the more popular jazz and world music forms to more alternative or exploratory musicians and forms.

Imagine a music that is far removed from bands and orchestras, from traditional chord progressions and musical riffs. Imagine a musician that begins an improvisation by listening first of all to the ambience (or silence) around them, and takes that noise, (or lack of it) as the starting point for the improvisation they will make. Imagine this music, in tune with the environment. Sometimes all we hear is breath. Might this be true improvisation?

Car wash for cancer Contributed by Dave Kelsey, James Mobile Car Cleaning Beerwah/Landsborough It’s always heartbreaking when you hear or read about a child diagnosed with cancer, a young mother or father, or a grandparent, and the unimaginable struggles and challenges that follow. As a new father I can’t think of more devastating news.

Five families every day in Queensland are faced with this, with an average of five Queenslanders diagnosed every day with a blood disorder, leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma. These are diseases that do not discriminate, striking regardless of age, sex, size, or genetics.

The Leukaemia Foundation’s 55 for 5 Challenge, in its second year, is a 55km hike over two days in the beautiful Mapleton national park, on August 18 - 19. Funds raised this year are going towards building projects in Brisbane and Townsville, to provide accommodation for families of patients undergoing treatment.

After participating in the World’s Greatest Shave for the first time this year, when I heard about the hike I decided it was time to step up - literally!

To raise money, my wife and myself, along with Alan Cass from James Mobile Car Cleaning Nambour, will be holding a car wash fundraiser this Sunday, August 5 at Top Gun Panel and Paint, 5 Beerwah Parade, Beerwah. Starting at 7.00am, we will also have a sausage sizzle and delicious fresh coffee for sale while you wait! New social group launched for local women There was plenty of interest when a new social group for women was launched at the Glasshouse Neighbourhood Centre last week. Guest speaker was local author Jule Pitcher, on how to live a ‘lovely’ life. The group will meet fortnightly to share friendship and wellbeing, according to coordinator Natasha Odgers. Upcoming events include a talk on gardening with native plants, and a bushwalk around the base of Mt Tibrogargan. For more information about the group, which is open to women of all ages, see the story on page 7.

Glasshouse Country RSL – Citizens Auxiliary Committee are known for serving Friday night meals at their hall at the entrance to Glass House Mountains Township. However last weekend they put their hosting skills to the test and held a great wine and cheese tasting night which was a sold out success.

The great tastes of Maleny Cheeses were complemented by some groovy sounds from a group of local musicians calling themselves ‘Who Cares’.

More local talent – and New Orleans influence It is now all systems go for the 2012 Caloundra Music Festival, with ARIA award-winner Ben Lee joining the latest list of artists for this year’s event, which festival director Richie Eyles has described “the best line-up yet.”

The carbon tax has been set at $23.00 a tonne.

I also saw this interview and disagree with your summation. I am not surprised Peter Voser choose $40.00 a tonne to factor into his project, because in his opinion the price of carbon, worldwide, will reach that figure in 30/40 years time. However he conceded that the current market price is much lower than the $23.00 a tonne fixed by the Gillard government. It is believed a market price of $15.00 a tonne is most likely, when Australia changes from a fixed price in 2015.

Peter is obviously a supporter of carbon pricing, but then being the CEO of a major company doesn’t necessary make him right. What Peter said was that he believed those countries not introducing a carbon price may find it difficult to meet world standards on carbon emissions. He went on to say that this could make them uncompetitive in attracting foreign Investment. I don’t see how.

Great Britain and Europe have embraced both wind and solar generators and could arguably meet world standards without adopting a carbon price.

Many countries have both hydro and nuclear power generators. Technology has albeit, introduced a commercial use for thermal generation.

On the subject of CO2 emissions, most of what comes out of chimney stacks is soot and sulphur dioxide. CO2 and water vapour are also present; however both are greenhouse gases and are colourless and odourless. Sulphur dioxide in our atmosphere, the bulk of which comes from volcanic eruptions, causes acid rain. CO2 actually sustains life; our flora uses the carbon (C) to survive, while animal life needs oxygen (O2) to survive.

As far as the tax goes, I had a problem from day one. I believe the compensation package will fall short. Imports, which make up 75 per cent of our purchases, will become cheaper than Australian made when the carbon price bites into our own manufacturers.

Australian manufacturers are, and have been for some time, hamstrung by union interference and tough IR laws, which virtually decreases the chance for productivity growth. Business will either fold or seek imported labour to fill Australian jobs because foreign workers accept productivity as part of their role.

Bottom line and unless government policy changes, Australia will become uncompetitive and unemployment will rise.

I recently received a flyer in my letterbox promoting a Thursday night meal special at the Glass House Sports Club and decided to take up their offer of a Chicken Parmi for $10.00 and their Kids Under 12 eat free (excludes rump steak special) offer.

Great I thought, a nice cheap night out for my son and I. And I have never had a parmi before!

So I was surprised when I ordered to be advised by the staff that ‘the kids eat free’ was not part of the deal when you ordered a special.

When I told that I had seen it in their flyer, they advised that I would need to speak with the manager as the leaflet had omitted to mention that the ‘kids eat free’ deal does not come with the specials.

The manager explained that it had been a misprint and that there was no way that they could afford to do this with the specials.

I don’t begrudge paying for my son’s meal, however what really concerns me is that the Sports Club did not honour what they had printed on their leaflet. My understanding is that when an offer is advertised, it has to be honoured whether a misprint or not.

I was also appalled by how the manager responded – it was very much a ‘not our fault, so you need to suck it up’.

Clearly the club knows that there is a mistake in the flyer – so it is interesting that they still have these misleading leaflets available at the front door.

What a disgrace

One has to wonder why we are paying road tax, especially given the condition of the old back road from Landsborough to Beerwah.

The problem is the Beerwah end of the road and what a disgrace it is.

The politicians should be in an uproar over this: but have you heard any of them complaining? No, nor have I. What is it going to take: a major accident where one hits the pothole and bounces into on-coming traffic? No one seems to want to do anything, when authorities were asked the question, when would it be fixed?

This was the forthcoming answer; we are waiting for the flood money to be released before we will do anything about the road.

What flood money? The lot the Red Cross gave away overseas that was raised for Queenslanders?

Or the money that the Bligh government blew before being disposed at the election?

Come on people raise your game.

Thanks to the people who stopped to help me with a young kangaroo knocked down on Old Gympie Road between Beerwah and Glass House Mountains on Monday, July 30. The young roo was still alive when I stopped, trying to get up with its mother waiting on the side of the road; it died not long after we arrived. There is now only one number to call for injured wildlife in Queensland 1300 ANIMAL (264625). A great decision to streamline the phone numbers for all the organisations associated with wildlife rescue.

Shame on the person who did not take responsibility for their actions and stop to help the kangaroo and once again thank you to those who did stop to help me.

Place+ The focus groups working on Place+ in Beerwah are gearing up for the next phase of the project. It’s at an exciting stage as we’ll soon see the ideas presented during community consultation translated into a design for the entire area. There is a Streetscape Group with a focus specifically on the streetscape and we’ll be meeting this week to talk about the future design, look and feel for the town’s streetscape.

Old Landsborough Road There’s been a lot of council activity along Old Landsborough Road recently.

New bus shelters are currently being constructed and I have been working with the design team on final aspects of the project. When complete, the shelters will feature new pull out areas for buses so traffic flow isn’t interrupted. This will make it safer for road users and provide easier access for passengers onto buses.

Parts of the Old Landsborough Road have substantial pavement saturation due to heavy rainfall events over the past 12 months. Council has submitted a funding application for restoration work to the Queensland Reconstruction Authority. If the funding is approved, work will commence before the end of the financial year. Meanwhile, council’s maintenance staff will continue to monitor and keep the road in a safe condition until restoration works commence.

Bankfoot House Heritage is an area I’m particularly passionate about and it was rewarding to meet with the Friends of Bankfoot House who do a tremendous job preserving heritage in our region. For seven years I was Chair of Museum and Galleries Services Queensland and I look forward to sharing my experience and ensuring that Bankfoot House becomes an exceptional tourist destination that provides a rich cultural experience for all visitors.

Mooloolah Community Forum In July I commenced a series of community consultation sessions in Mooloolah, which focus on developing a submission to the new town plan regarding the future of Mooloolah’s town centre. The first meeting was a great success, and I was excited to see such strong enthusiasm from the community. Future meetings will be held on the fourth Thursday of each month until Christmas, from 7.30am - 8.30am at the Thunderbird Café in Mooloolah. I am also seeking to arrange a ‘meet and greet’ session with Mayor Mark Jamieson as a tie-in to these consultations.

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship

Since my eldest son was a baby my wife and I have owned a 4x4 wagon, and sadly the time has come for us to wave it goodbye. My son is nine now and the car is 17-years-old and everything on it is starting to let go.

My head is telling me that I need to get rid of the car but my heart is not quite ready. Like the line in the movie Transformers…‘there is a magical bond between man and machine’.

We have many great memories as a family that are linked with that car and it feels like we are saying goodbye to an old friend. Even though it came with its hassles – engine problems, breakdowns, and radiator leaks, we will miss seeing it waiting for us in the driveway ready to take us wherever we drove it… it reminds me of a loyal Labrador. I am getting quite sentimental here!

Well, it got me thinking about how God is always there for us. It’s funny how people can come and go, cars definitely come and go… but God remains the same: constant, all-powerful, all-knowing, totally loving, just, merciful and gracious. Not one thing we do, say, think, or experience escapes his sight.

Psalm 139 in the bible paints a beautiful picture of how involved God is in our lives even though we often don’t realise it or think of it.

Another bible verse… Deuteronomy 31 verse 6 says: ‘Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.’

Now, this can either freak us out to consider this or (hopefully) provide an incredible peace that God is with us always.

The thing with relationships is we need to respond to the other person, we can’t just take, take, take and take. We must give back too.

Otherwise the relationship is just one-way and won’t last.

Now if God truly is with us always and loves us dearly like the bible says… what are we doing to respond to him? Do we acknowledge him in our lives? Do we talk to him and listen to what he is saying to us (prayer)? Are we living our lives in a way that honours God? Let’s consider this as we do what we do this week and hopefully we can have a great relationship with the best ‘old friend’ in the universe.

The voice of the residential building industry, the Housing Industry Association (HIA), has welcomed the announcement by the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) that it will convene an inquiry into the cost of construction.

“The housing industry is supportive of a thorough review of the costs associated with construction,” said HIA Managing Director Shane Goodwin.

“The high costs of construction, whether due to excess taxation on new housing or the myriad of red and green tape, impacts on housing affordability for Australians.”

“The housing industry is particularly pleased to see the very broad scope of the Terms of Reference for the review, which we believe will give the expert panel valuable insights into the problems facing the industry and hopefully will be the source of some good policy recommendations.”

Red tape costs slashed for pool owners Pool owners who upgrade or repair their pool barriers will no longer need to submit a building application, saving both time and money.

Previously, pool owners had to submit a building application for any fencing works for a pool barrier involving more than five metres of fence or more than six fence posts.

Under the changes, these jobs are able to be inspected by a pool safety inspector, saving pool owners between $350.00 and $900.00.

There are a range of repairs and maintenance that pool owners could do without supervision, for example replacing only two fence posts, however, where a pool owner is planning more extensive upgrades, a pool safety inspector will need to be engaged before the work begins.

Steer clear of magpies as they protect chicks With magpie swooping season just around the corner, the Environment and Heritage Protection Department (EHP) is urging us to be on our guards.

EHP Wildlife Management Director Dr Ashley Bunce said a few simple actions could help people avoid or minimise the chances of injury from a magpie.

"The magpie breeding season starts in July, peaking from August to October," Dr Bunce said.

"During the breeding season, it’s best to stay well clear of areas where magpies are known to be swooping, and particularly avoid the nesting tree.

"If you can’t avoid the area, move through it quickly, but don't run. Be 'magpie-smart' and wear a hat and sunglasses or carry an umbrella.

Cyclists should dismount and walk through the territory to avoid the risk of injury from a fall or collision.

"Cyclists have found it helpful to attach large cable ties to the back of their helmet.

"Mums and dads should make sure their children are magpie-smart when going outdoors," he said.

Magpies only swoop as a way of protecting their nests and young chicks – so really, they are just being good parents.

Dr Bunce said it was important to remember that not all magpies swooped, and they only did so while chicks were in the nest, to drive away potential threats.

"Most swooping is by the male magpie and almost entirely in the magpie 'defence zone' - the area around the nest tree," he said.

"The male magpie's aim is to drive the perceived intruder away from the nest, not to cause injury.

The swooping nearly always stops once you leave the area.

"Remember that birds that swoop will only do so for about six to eight weeks of the year."

Strawberry Jam

I just love these colder months in the garden!

Not only do I get the wonderful experience of soaking up the warm sunshine on cool days but I get an abundance of harvest with minimal problems.

This past month has seen a bountiful harvest of cauliflowers, broccoli, cabbage, choko, silverbeet, peas and spring onions. Not to mention bunches of bananas, juicy oranges and loads of lemons.

What’s more is that this coming month is promising to deliver a bounty of juicy strawberries to my garden.

Depending on your garden aspect, planting time and variety, many of you may have already been treated to these sweet delights, but mine are only just beginning to form and as a family we are all eagerly anticipating these fresh delights.

Consistent watering that avoids wetting the leaves and a good feed at flowering time will ensure a long harvesting period and plump, sweet strawberries.

I know from previous years that whilst in the first month the strawberries don’t quite make it from the garden as they are eaten fresh from the patch, however after that first month we end up with an oversupply.

A few years back I learnt how easy it is to make strawberry jam to put the excess strawberries to good use and now the sweet smell of strawberry jam being cooked is an annual experience in my home.

So now I’ll pass on the recipe that I was told of by my friend’s mother and encourage everyone to have a go, it is worth the effort in so many ways.

There are numerous ways to help the jam set, however by using Jamsetta, the following method eliminates many potential pitfalls.

1.5 kg strawberries 1/4 cup water 4 tablespoons lemon juice 50g packet Jamsetta (usually found near the cake decorating section) 1.5kg granulated sugar (warmed by placing in an oven at 150˚C) 1. Wash, drain and hull the strawberries and place them in a large saucepan with the water and lemon juice and cook gently, uncovered until strawberries are soft.

2. Add the Jamsetta and warmed sugar, and heat gently until dissolved, stirring constantly. Bring it to the boil and boil vigorously for 5-10 minutes stirring occasionally. A knob of butter added to the jam while cooking helps prevent froth forming on top of the jam during bottling.

3. To check if it sets, place a teaspoon of jam on a pre-chilled plate and place it in the freezer.

After 30 seconds run your finger through the jam, if set, the jam will crinkle. If not set, return to boil for another 3 minutes and test again.

4. Remove the jam from the heat and allow to stand for 10 minutes, and then pour into sterilised, warm, dry jars. I use tin lidded jars and have them washed, rinsed and standing in a warm oven prior to cooking.

I hope everyone gets at least a taste of a freshly picked organic strawberry this month, or better still many jars of their own homemade strawberry jam.

National Tree Day activities Last Friday, Glenview State School got into the swing of National Tree Day with a planting exercise involving lots of the students.

Helped by Simon Smith from Go Green Rainforest Nursery – who donated all the plants – the students planted, fertilised and watered over 180 plants of varying types, sizes and varieties.

Not only will the school grounds look fantastic, but the local wildlife will benefit with most plants being food for local birds, butterflies and other native creatures.

Super Strawberry competitors came up with some more fairly light-weight entries this week. The winning strawberry, entered by Robyn Horsfall, weighed in at 125 grams.

Congratulations to Robyn for bringing it in, and she wins the weekly six-pack from Beerwah Hotel.

Strawberry growers tell us that the season is against them, and we are certainly not seeing as many potential champions this year. So we are still waiting for the big one!

Round 5 will close at 5.00pm on Friday, August 3 at the Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers' Co-op.

A Grade Hosted Nambour at Beerwah on Saturday and the Crushers came ready to play and were on fire to rack up 22 points to nil by half time.

The home team competed in the second half but still could not get across the stripe and allowed Nambour to score three more converted tries to go down 40-0.

Our Women’s Team threw everything they had against the 2nd placed Burleigh Heads side in what was a great game of footy but was the visitor’s defence held strong and won the game 20-0.

Next Saturday are the last home games for the seniors with Under 18’s planned for 2pm, A Grade 3.30pm and the Women at 5.15pm.

Glasshouse Ponyclub Contributed by Kelly Wall Well done to all the Glasshouse Ponyclub riders who participated in our 1st LJ Hooker Jump Day on the Saturday, July 28. Over 90 riders jumped in individual jump courses from 20cm height to over 1metre. Thank you to Kim Micheal, Natalie Taylor and Scott Hull our jump course designers, who designed fun and challenging courses for kids aged from four years to adults. Everyone had a fantastic fun day, whether it was their first time and having ago to the experienced.

A BIG thank you to Scott Hull the principal of Caloundra LJ HOOKER for making the day possible.
