ast week the numerous ANZAC Day activities planned for the area went off well, with strong attendances particularly at the mid morning events with a noticeable increase in the number of families with young children coming along.

There seemed to be more school kids taking part in all three of the marches held at Landsborough, Beerwah and Glass House Mountains, which was great to see.

After writing in my column last week about how challenging I find it getting up at 3.30am on ANZAC Day, I have to admit I have been completely put to shame by the Landsborough Scouts.

These young scouts camped out on ANZAC Day eve and were up at 2.45am to walk the two and a half kilometres to attend

I have to say that is pretty good - I reckon the parents must have had some very tired kids on their hands after they picked them up that morning!

The one hitch that I am aware off was the horses that were ready to go at the Glass House Mountains Parade, but got spooked when the drummers started up. It is such a shame as I know there are many in the Glass House community who know how much effort Max puts into making sure the horses are prepared ... but you know what they say about working with kids and animals - there are just no guarantees!

I Can for Cancer - Market The first-ever Cancer Council Queensland Coastal Village Markets was launched last Sunday at Beerwah Sportsground!

The monthly markets, to be themed with a different Cancer Council Queensland campaign or colour for each event, supported the ‘I Can for Cancer’ campaign.

All stalls, from farmers to gourmet bread stands, cakes, arts and craft are committed to working toward a cancer free future.

Manager of Coastal Village Markets, Julie Robinson, has been raising funds for Cancer Council Queensland for as long as she can remember.

“I lost my father three years ago to blood cancer and his loss, as hard as it has been, has given me strength to make a difference to those who struggle with cancer day to day,” Ms Robinson said.

“The market has been set up as a not-for-profit business raising funds for CCQ. “We have a great variety of local arts / craft and produce stalls that will grow in number as we become known throughout the Sunny Coast.

“We aim to make a difference and hope that local businesses will either join us or sponsor us so that we can continue to run many successful events in

Cancer Council Queensland Spokesperson Katie Clift thanked the markets for their support, and encouraged the community to get involved.

“One in two Queenslanders will be diagnosed with cancer by age 85,” she said.

The May market, to be held on Sunday, May 26, will support Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea and cater for more than 500 locals.

Talks continue on the future of Mooloolah Pool Caloundra MP Mark McArdle has met with representatives from Education Queensland and Sunshine Coast Regional Council as well George Winter and Michael McMahon from the Mooloolah Valley Community Association Inc and Natalie Pettingil from the Mooloolah State School P&C Association.

Mr McArdle held the meeting in a bid to establish a clear direction for the future of the Mooloolah Pool.

Until November 2012, an agreement for the public to use the pool had been in place for some time. At that point the agreement ended and the use of the pool became uncertain.

Mr McArdle said following the completion of the agreement there was uncertainty for the future of the pool. ‘’This meeting was about taking discussions

further and implementing a plan that all parties are can live with,’’ Mr McArdle said. ‘’Education Queensland and the Mooloolah State School are seeking expressions of interest for a position to oversee the pool to ensure ongoing community access. ‘’The local pool is an essential part of the community at Mooloolah. Children learn to swim while exercising and it provides a social outlet for the area. It’s not only a place to swim.’’

Mr McArdle said another meeting will be held by Education Queensland in the next fortnight with the interested parties. ‘’Every reasonable effort must be made to ensure the pool stays open to the community” he said.

She will have a number of her rugs on display at the Beerwah Library during May. Graham Leach Memorial Chaplaincy Concert A beautiful sunny afternoon, an enthusiastic happy crowd and some wonderfully talented singers and entertainers made for a very pleasant Sunday afternoon at the Baptist Church, as the life of Graham Leach was celebrated at a Memorial Concert for Chaplaincy.

You could hear a pin drop as young Harras a six-yearold pianist who has been learning for just two years stunned the audience with five splendid pieces on the grand piano as his feet dangled towards the floor.

Graham’s wife Barbara Leach did a mammoth job accompanying many of the performances. These included accompanying her grandson Conor who showcased his amazing vocal range with several songs from Le Miserables and other shows, the Singing Belles who sang original Aussie compositions and Liberty Vlaanderen a 14-year-old violinist from NZ who has been at GCCC for just two months.

Tom Leach performed several intricate pieces on the grand piano finishing with a Rachmaninoff composition and Andrew Leach played the guitar for Isabella Leach for her haunting songs.

After the magnificent afternoon tea, supplied by the Baptist Church folk, the Baptist Church Band had the audience rocking and singing along with ‘Running Bear’ and ‘When the Saints go Marching In’.

Chaplaincy Chairman Glenda McSwain co-compered the Concert with Warwick Moody and in true Graham Leach tradition had plenty of blonde and Irish jokes to keep the audience laughing. They were especially popular with the Lavally Lodge contingent in the audience.

The Mute Monks brought the house down with the finale of the Hallelujah Chorus after which the Leach family made a surprise presentation in appreciation to organiser Glenda McSwain.

Graham Leach was born, the eldest of six children, on August 25, 1930 in Beaudesert QLD. His childhood and early school life were spent on the family dairy farm at Tamborine Village.

He then had four years boarding at Marist College, Ashgrove. Following school, he joined the Commonwealth Bank in Brisbane and 42 years later retired, having moved around Queensland and New South Wales and finishing his career in Armidale, NSW. Wherever he and his family lived, Graham was always involved in community activities, be it the schools his children attended, the church or the service club he was a member of at the time. Rotary was a huge part of his involvement in the community and he continued his association with this organisation into his retirement.

Graham, with wife Barbara and youngest son Tom, retired to Peachester in 1990 and built their home on seven acres there, where he spent many happy hours developing wonderful gardens and enjoying the company of family and friends. His other passion within the Peachester community was his work at the Peachester Cemetery where he spent many enjoyable days beautifying and improving the area. He was also a long-time member of Peachester Horticultural Society and Peachester History Committee.

Graham passed away on January 21, 2013 and his funeral was held at Mary MacKillop Church, Beerwah. He had been a parishioner and a dedicated member of that church community for over 20 years. His funeral was a testament to the esteem in which he was held by family and friends and the wider community.

Graham’s infectious enthusiasm will be remembered by all those who knew him. He was a person who gave inspiration and encouragement to young and old in all environments, and he will be sorely missed. He was a real son of Australia.

Graham is survived by his wife Barbara, five sons and three daughters and their spouses and 13 grandchildren.

More than 200 students from Glasshouse Country Christian College joined the local community honouring ANZACs this year.

It was a moving service with speeches, prayers, recitals, singing of the New Zealand and Australian National Anthems and the old hymn, Abide with me. Then concluding with The Last Post and Reveille.

President of the Beerwah-Peachester RSL, Mr Gavin Smith, said it was wonderful to see so many students and young families attend, as it would be up to them to remember the sacrifice of the ANZACs in the future.

Each service, school and community group took turns laying wreaths and the GCCC Primary, Middle and Senior School captains laid their floral tributes at the cenotaph with solemnity and respect.

Throughout the searing sun and solemn service, students from GCCC and all the other local schools conducted themselves with honour and were a credit to their respective schools.

Bernie Verwayen spoke at the Mooloolah State School Anzac Parade, about respect for all people.

Bernie is an Australian Veteran, from Mooloolah, who was awarded an OAM (Order of Australia Medal) on January 26, 2013 in the Australia Day Honours List for 30 years of service for veterans and families in the field of pensions and welfare

ANZAC Day in Landsborough Landsborough State School participated in the Landsborough Community ANZAC Day ceremony.

Students, their families and teachers showed their appreciation to those who have served in conflict as they proudly marched down Landsborough's Cribb Street.

At the cenotaph, they laid hand-made wreaths prepared by the students of each class. School captains Eli Budd and Zac McGrade spoke at the service.

Principal Kristy Walton said Landsborough State School was honoured to participate in the community ANZAC Day services each year.

“It is an event the students look forward to with great enthusiasm, where they can listen, learn, respect and honour.

Students preparing to march down “The best ANZAC Day lessons Cribb Street are those that extend outside the classroom where students are able to meet, hear stories and first hand experiences from those who have served as well as those who serve today,” she said.

Community News Peachester Playgroup Improvements

Mother Daughter Camps on the Sunshine Coast Contributed by Cathy Condon The IFYS Ltd, Beerwah & District Youth & Community Centre, in partnership with Jennie Morris Beerwah State High School-based Youth Health Nurse, Q Health, Sunshine Coast gained funding for four mother - daughter camps from Jupiter’s Casino Community Benefit Funding.

The last camp will be held May 17 to 19 at Mapleton.

The third camp held on April 20 and 21 at Mapleton was a great success. Mothers and daughters from Maleny and Beerwah High schools attended and were delighted with the camp. Marie Brunger, a Life Coach and inspirational speaker ran workshop sessions, and there was ample free time for play and using the camp facilities.

The aim of the camps was for mothers and teenage girls to gain an opportunity to reconnect with each other, share their hopes and dreams and to come home to themselves, remembering who they are as individuals.

Contributed by Fiona Gray Last Saturday we had major digging works done to put in a spoon drain along our fence line. We also dragged a lot of soil out from behind and alongside our shed to create a larger play area.

The work was very kindly done by Andy and Pete Buck, it took all day so a big, big thank you to them and also Rob, Kate and Piper Buck - family business.

Then on Sunday the mum’s, dad’s and children of the play group laid the turf that was very kindly donated by Doug Benjarfield of Stanley River Turf who also helped cut and unload for us.

Also a thank you to the co-op for donating the fertiliser.

The children will now have a safe, soft, clean area to play on.

Later this week Fenceline will be out, to finish putting up some new fencing and a gate - which we obtained through a grant.

Students head back to the 80s

School News Kids run for funds Glass House Mountains State School students will be running in the Adidas School Fun-Run to raise vital funds for their school on Wednesday, May 8.

In the coming week, students will be seeking support from the local community for running the event.

Sponsorship from the community is vital to make this fundraiser a success. “The Adidas School Fun-Run presents an excellent platform to get students excited about physical activity,� said Matt Potter, Physical Education teacher from Glass House Mountains State School. “I am very proud of the students for getting involved,� he said. “Glass House Mountains State School is setting a new standard for other schools to follow, by choosing a way to raise money that is supportive of the nutrition in schools policy and delivers positive messages about the importance of physical activity to a child’s healthy growth and development,� said Brendan Hopp, General Manager of The Fundraising Group.

Students from Unity College are reliving the 80s as they prepare for the College’s much-awaited musical production debut. With more than 180 students from Year 3 to Year 12 involved as cast and crew, back to the 80’s promises to be a rocking trip down memory lane. Audiences should prepare to chill out with the best musical hits of the 80s.

Director and ‘Arts’ Coordinator Lisa Weir said College staff have backed the musical in many behind-the-scenes roles and will have the audience entertained with some cameo roles (complete with their original 80s gear) throughout.

According to Lisa, “It’s certainly been a massive collaborative effort from our Department and the wider school community.�

Why be the First?

When faced with a situation which is not working effectively and when you have the strong conviction that your solution is the right one, that is when a courageous decision to be first can be both justified and successful.

In the late 1990s, Nambour Christian College identified the challenge of providing an engaging and relevant school environment for 11-14 year olds; that adolescence is a distinct developmental phase with its own characteristics, elements and challenges, and hence requires a unique response.

Steve Irwin Way

Recent letters to the editor have expressed heartfelt concerns, which I share, about the safety of intersections on the Steve Irwin Way such as the Bowen Road and Reed Street intersections. While these intersections are on a state road and will require significant state money to upgrade, they are a big priority for me as divisional councillor and as transport portfolio councillor. With state and council budgets the most constrained they have been in a long time, we have to make the arguments as strongly and effectively as possible.

One of the issues with upgrades along the Steve Irwin Way is the relationship with the planned duplication and realignment of the rail line from Beerburrum to Landsborough or Nambour, which will alter in places the path of the Steve Irwin Way, and the position of some intersections.

This would be an ideal opportunity to concurrently improve their design, and the sooner that happens the better. To make a stronger case for funding, any potential upgrades before that time would need to accommodate the future path of the Steve Irwin Way and any planned added lanes.

Working together with the state is critical.

In progress towards this and many other goals, as announced on Friday, April 12, we have established a new ‘Sunshine Coast First’ regional partnership following the first combined meeting between Sunshine Coast councillors and state members. I’m very pleased that we now have the opportunity to better compare and potentially integrate our transport plans, which would be a rare achievement in Queensland.

Whether, through my community meetings or directly to my office, my door is always open to discuss issues and work together as a community, particularly where safety is concerned.

Rick Baberowski | Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council It is always tragic to hear of road accidents that occur in our community and I can appreciate how news of a fatal accident is particularly upsetting for local residents.

The two sadly fatal accidents we have recently experienced in the Glass House region demonstrate the importance of being aware and alert when driving on the roads.

Many of you took part in my successful campaign some years ago to reduce the speed at the section around Bowen Road to 80km per hour and I am pleased to say this reduction has had a positive impact on driver behaviour in the area.

I understand that many of your readers have suggestions for ways the intersection at Bowen Road and Steve Irwin Way can be improved and I take these comments on board.

The section of the Steve Irwin Way from Amy Drive to Bowen Road is on my Glass House priority list and I have already communicated my desire to see upgrades delivered to the Minister several times over the past 12 months. I am confident that in time, as we restore the state finances, projects such as this will become a reality.

In the meantime I welcome community feedback and will explore any safety concerns that are raised directly with my office.

What will it take?

Last week councillor Rick Baberowski got on his bike for a ride between Glass House and Beerwah.

For 25 years I have been trying to have the path completed, however there is still two kilometre section that State Government and the Sunshine Coast Council need to resolve.

It’s too dangerous to ride along for people, with 20 - 40 ton trucks going by, meaning that cyclists have to go through scrub from time to time Over the 25 years, councillor Baberowski is the first elected representative to get his hands dirty and experience the dangers along the ride.

What will it take to have some action – surely not a cyclist losing their life on this dangerous section? For the State and council to say there’s no money after 25 years does not wash any more.

With our population growing rapidly we need the Glass House to Beerwah pathway completed now and to live in a safe environment.

Wheels in motion for better bikeways

The desperate need for better cycle pathways in our local area was really made apparent to me on a recent bike ride with local community transport group member Richard Plantinga.

Riding the potential routes really gave me a clearer picture of the need to improve our local bikeway network between Beerwah and Glass House and I’m determined to progress a link between these towns as soon as possible.

Thank you for taking a photo of our Scouts and Cubs who attended the RSL's Dawn Service at Landsborough. I have only just started out in my first year as a Scout Leader and since I was in the Navy for 10 years I have been very proud that all my scout troop and three cubs were willing and eager to sleep over and wake up at 0245 to walk to the Dawn Service by 0415.

It has been an education for them and I am so pleased that the next generation of Scouts are also continuing the traditions of attending Dawn Services. They also helped the RSL in setting up the Hall for the later Service.

I am also humbled that I get to show these amazing young people a new direction based on Loyalty, Trust and Consideration, and hope to teach more young people over more years to come.

David Terrey Landsborough Scouts I wish to apologise to the residents of Glass House who attended this year’s ANZAC Day march for any concerns that my horse caused at the commencement of the march.

As you may remember, we have led the ANZAC day march prior to this year and it is of great importance to me for several reasons.

My father was a member of the 2/12 field Ambulance and was killed when a Japanese submarine torpedoed the Hospital ship AHS Centaur on the 14th May 1943, resulting in the death of most members of the 2/12.

I am a former member of the Royal Australian Regiment.

Jasmine and I look forward to leading this parade for the above reasons and it also gives us the opportunity to repay Glass House residents for the support we receive in the care of our horses.

Our wonderful old parade horse Mandrake, who was one of the parade horses, was ‘27 years young’ and was not with us this year.

We used a new horse who was unaccustomed to parades or bands and when the drums started it unsettled him.

He put up quite a show and I apologise to any person that his behaviour caused concern to.

My Grandad served in Gallipoli, he was in the English Army, I sense that wherever you are in the world you could not help be moved by these parades and the meaning of the day.

Community News Glasshouse Country View Club Our guest speaker at our April luncheon was author and songwriter Carmelo Cacciola, known as Charlie. He migrated from Sicily in 1954 and gave an interesting talk on his life, relating his journey to ‘the long and winding road’. Charlie spent 45 years in banking and estate planning.

When he was 15, he was determined to play A grade rugby league even without his father’s approval. He achieved that in the 1960’s.

He had various struggles with his family which resulted in liaisons with State Premiers, the current Prime Minister and other politicians. His passion is education; he’s an advocate for male role models in schools, social and natural justice.

He is the co-author of the critically acclaimed true crime story ‘The Second Father’.

At the age of 62, he learnt to play the guitar and has written a few country songs. Charlie and his wife Lynda are members of two country music clubs.

After working with Stepping Out Podiatry in 2011, Kelli packed up her belongings and moved to Singapore at the beginning of 2012 to accept a position as a Podiatrist with the Singapore General Hospital where she could broaden her knowledge of lower limb conditions. From July 1, 2012 businesses in the building and construction industry need to report the total payments they make to each contractor with ABN’s for building and construction services each year. The aim of reporting is to improve compliance with tax obligations by those contractors by data matching their income and ensuring they are lodging their tax returns. It is compulsory for businesses to report each contractor working in the building and constructions services from July 1, 2012. The business needs to report the contractors: - ABN - Contractors Name - Address - Gross amount paid including GST if applicable - Total GST included These details are usually found on invoices provided by the contractor.

Businesses need to report all contractors whether they are an individual, partnership, trust or company. This information needs to be lodged with the ATO by July 28, 2013 (if you lodge your BAS’s quarterly otherwise it’s July 21, 2013) for the contractor payments made for the period July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013.

Your business is considered primarily in the building and construction industry if 50 per cent or more of your income is derived from providing building and construction services.

On the weekend I had the pleasure of providing the sound system for one of the performing stages at the Maleny Music Weekend: www. malenymusicweekend.com. It was held in the lovely Maleny Showgrounds area, ran from Friday to Sunday, and attracted well over a 1,000 people, many of whom camped there for the weekend. The music represented at this festival is folk based, and it includes everything from traditional folk, blues, country, choral and gospel to world music - including at this festival Celtic, Eastern European, Japanese and West African music soloists and ensembles. And of course there is encouragement of local community based groups with a wide selection of the best musicians working in the Sunshine Coast area.

It was a joy to be involved with such welcoming people. From the moment we arrived – the van loaded with equipment, there was help provided and interest shown by volunteers who were gathered to assist the festival. Volunteers are an essential cog in the wheel of these big events and in return for their support, they get to enjoy the music and atmosphere provided.

I provided sound for the Obi Obi Green stage which was covered by a 100 m2 marquee.

This stage provides an intimate venue and open space for people to enjoy blackboard or open mic entertainment, along with professional acts and bigger ensembles (too large for a typical stage) who were able to perform on the grass surrounded by the audience sitting on hay bales.

The role of blackboard sessions at these sorts of music events is an integral part of their success. For those who don’t know, the blackboard allows musicians - either those who haven’t been booked to perform, or else those who simply want to get together with others to form a scratch band for a jam, to get up on stage with a good sound system and perform publically. For up and coming players of any age there is also the special reward that comes with preceding or following top performers on stage, and as Festival Director Noel Gardner noted, by alternating blackboard sessions with booked professional acts, there is the increased likelihood of that ‘special reward’ taking place.

So a lovely musical and relaxed weekend - with beautiful clear days and cool nights, was had by all up at Maleny. If you didn’t make it this year, put it in your diary for next, as it is a special event.

History Committee

Centenary Reunion Though both Crohamhurst and Commissioner's Flat Schools are long gone, Peachester History Committee members feel that former students should have an opportunity to celebrate the centenary of their establishment. A reunion for both schools will be held at the Peachester Hall on Sunday, November 3.

Access to education was a challenge for pioneering families in country areas, and children often travelled long distances to the nearest school. The Peachester district provides a typical example. When the Coochin Creek (Beerwah) School opened in 1888, some children rode all the way down the range to attend classes.

A provisional school was established in the Peachester Hall from 1892, which brought education closer for many families.

The early years of the 20th century saw a proliferation of small country schools. Peachester State School replaced the provisional school in 1911, Commissioner's Flat School was opened in 1912, then the families around Crohamhurst applied to have a school of their own.

The Nambour Chronicle of October 11, 1912 contains this interesting item in a Public Works

report: ‘The following tenders have been accepted by the government: ... erection of a state school at Crohamhurst, W. A. Grigor, £274.’

Land for the school had been donated by Inigo Jones, and in the Chronicle of July 4, 1913 we read: ‘New Schools. Approval has been gazetted of the establishment of state schools at Bellmere near Caboolture, and Crohamhurst via Beerwah.’

The new Crohamhurst School opened on July 21, 1913, with Miss Laura James the first head teacher. Several generations of children passed through this little school, but in 1960 it was closed and the students moved to Peachester School.

More details later, but anyone with an interest in Crohamhurst and Commissioner's Flat Schools, please note the reunion date, Sunday, November 3.

Mother's Day 2013 Going pink for Mother’s Day

Jacinta Bobos and Sarah Page of Mooloolah are just two enthusiastic locals who will be heading to Cotton Tree Park on Mother’s Day to take part in the first Sunshine Coast Mothers Day Classic.

The main event on the day is a 4.5 km walk to raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation -'Funding research for prevention and cure'. A 8 km run will also be added to the event next year.

A fun morning is planned for mums and all the family, with stalls, talks and activities kicking off at 7.00am with the main walk at 8.00am.

There will be a sausage sizzle, warm up Zumba, raffles and some fabulous spot prizes have been donated by local businesses for the event. "The local support is fantastic," Jacinta said.

This national event has been held for more than 15 years across Australia with more than 14.8 million dollars raised by 120,000 plus participants.

As Jacinta and Sarah (who had participated in the Mothers Day Classic previously in Victoria) both had family members and friends endure the breast cancer journey they decided this year, to become actively involved with the newly formed Sunshine Coast Mother's Day Classic committee.

Lia Halsall will also be sharing stories about her ‘journey’ at the event.

Some readers may recognise Jacinta from Beerwah Hair and Beauty where she works parttime. She has already been busy encouraging others to get a group together or even bring along their children, dress up and have a fun morning.

Sarah, a personal trainer, wanted to remind locals that the event is very much about participating, it is not a competition, and the day is about raising much-needed funds for women who need help with breast cancer.

"I would suggest that you register online (to avoid the queue) or you can register at the event on the day,” she said.

In Australia we’re often advised about the importance of tapping into Asian markets and establishing closer business ties with the region. A recent Asian forum I attended at the Sunshine Coast University really highlighted just how important it is that we act on this advice.

The forum examined opportunities that will exist for the Sunshine Coast as a result of the Asian middle class population rising to an estimated 400 million people by 2030. The take-home messages were that our region needs the right infrastructure to raise its capacity, identity and appeal as a welcoming, safe place for them to visit or study. From a trade perspective, innovation was clearly identified as our big focus area for growth.

A fresh start for the Big Top

As a rural based division, the upcoming $20 million revamp of the ‘Big Top’ shopping centre at Maroochydore is set to provide some fantastic business opportunities for our local farms and fresh produce suppliers.

The existing centre will be transformed into ‘Big Top Market Fresh’ - a 10,000 square metre complex that will include over 100 market stalls on market days.

First Team gets Sunshine Coast on the move

A new gauge on safety

In an effort to further improve the flood safety in our region, council recently christened a new rain gauge in Conondale, taking the total number of gauges on the Sunshine Coast to 71. This new gauge will provide rainfall and water level information at Kenilworth and along the upper Mary River during wet weather events.

That information is transmitted instantly to council’s Local Disaster Coordination Centre and onto BOM. Investments in the rain gauge network and flood mapping of the upper Mary reinforces council’s commitment to these resilient communities.

The more information like this we have, the better equipped our communities can be when it comes to making important decisions during flooding events.

It’s war on weeds!

Throughout May you can help council wage a war on weeds by pulling them out of your garden and exchanging them for free native trees.

Weed swaps will take place at 37 different locations right across the Sunshine Coast during May. Information on locations, dates and times for weed swaps is available on council’s website or look for the posters in local libraries and council’s customer services centres.

So get digging and help us get rid of the region’s worst weeds!

Another great way you can keep in touch with council is by checking our website (www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au) regularly to find out what’s happening at council on matters that might be of interest to you.

For instance, at council’s April 24 Ordinary Meeting we considered changes to some Local Laws related to pathway management, keeping of animals and temporary advertising devices. Pastor Brendan Edwards Glasshouse Country Community Church Over the past few days I have had the privilege to work with our local RSL around the ANZAC day services and welfare activities that help ensure our local community is cared for, whether it is from recent losses of loved ones or long term needs of our older diggers.

I was introduced by our local RSL president, to a DVD that discussed some of the reasons why our returned service men and women struggle to lead ordinary lives in the community after being involved in the armed forces.

Interestingly, while those that experience frontline action and the horrors that come with seeing your comrades lose their lives, will have continued struggles with those memories, it’s actually the training that our soldiers receive in preparation for battle, before they leave our soil, that shapes a person into someone to be always alert, always on guard, to leave emotions undealt with and be prepared to fight rather than flee or retreat when situations arise.

This can make marriages, family and work relationships very hard to maintain for those that have been rewarded during their core training to put their emotions aside and get the job done at all costs. There is little or no training for them on how to be a healthy civilian again.

to have never experienced the trauma of war and its associated training, we need to ensure we are informed and educated as well as we can be to be all we can be in support of our soldiers, young or old. As a church we need to offer our gratitude and service to bless those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom, religious and otherwise.

James 1:27 says, ‘Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.’

Sometimes I wonder if we spend too much energy avoiding the turmoil in the world that we isolate ourselves from anything to do with war or conflict that is indeed for our benefit.

The RSL is already doing a great job in caring for our community in this area. Let’s make sure the Church is on the front line with them as Christ would lead us to be. Bless you and see you in church!

In my experience choosing an agent that is interested in the relationship of everyone involved is essential. Look for the agent that takes into account what’s best for all parties, not the ones just interested in earning a commission.

Maleny Wood Expo

The highly regarded Maleny Wood Expo is on again this weekend, May 4 and 5.

Two days of clean country family fun hosted by Barung Landcare, the Wood Expo showcases sustainable timber production and our beautiful native timbers through the work of local wood artisans.

Also featured is local produce, sustainable alternatives for the home, natural resource management displays and much more.

A major theme of the Expo is the sustainable use of our local timbers.

Reusing, recycling, reclaiming – taking what may be seen as waste timber and trees, and turning it into something useful and beautiful.

Local Glasshouse Country timber artisans will be at the Expo bringing to life local timbers – two of which are John Mitton, a local tree felling professional; and Shane Murphy, from Glasshouse Country Woodworks.

John Mitton will be displaying what can be done with trees that you thought may only be good for firewood or for the scrap heap.

He will demonstrate how he can turn a reclaimed tree into something you can use yourself, or timber that someone else – like Shane from Glasshouse Country Woodworks – can use to create a piece of furniture, wooden toys, a bar sign or a photo/mirror frame.

Peanut Tree - Sterculia quadrifida The peanut tree is an attractive small tree growing to approximately 5-10m, but can exceed that in some areas. Peanut tree is suitable for planting in a good sized home garden and in some cooler areas is semi deciduous.

Producing small creamy lemon scented flowers in summer, developing into beautiful orange pods which open to expose the blue/black seeds. The Peanut Tree fruit, seeds can be eaten raw or roasted and the taste photo by Paul Donatiu resembles peanuts!

Plant mystery solved … maybe

Last week we ran some images of a mystery plant which popped up in Rob’s garden at Peachester.

It seems reader consensus is that it most looks like a plant called Apple of Peru or Wild Hops (Nicandra physalodes) – although they also suggested that it may be another one of the Nicandra species that isn’t as well known.

Apple of Peru is a fast growing annual, grown as an ornamental. A native to Peru, it has become a weedy plant in most states of Australia. It is a problem weed in maize crops and, being from the same family as potatoes, it may contain some poisonous alkaloids.

Glasshouse Hinterland's Club Auskick will be commencing this Thursday, May 2 from 4.00pm until 5.00pm at our grounds at Tunnel Ridge Road, Landsborough. Club Auskick is for children aged five and six, and those who are older but not wanting to play club football. Auskick is for both boys and girls and is run over a 10-12 week period.

NAB AFL Auskick is the Australian Football League’s key introductory program for primary school aged children and their families.

Queensland Auskick is all about teaching boys and girls the skills of AFL in a friendly, safe environment.

The rules are modified to give children a really gentle introduction to AFL. Parents are encouraged to join in all the activities and the kids' faces just light up when they see mum or dad having a kick or taking a mark. So come on down and join in the fun.

Glass House Mountains Touch Association Senior – Representative Team Contributed by Desley Palmer

It is with great pleasure to boast the competitiveness of our newly formed ‘Glass House Mountains Representative Team’ formed only two weeks ago and registered to play in the Inter-Club Challenge at Maryborough on Sunday, April 28.

Our Team was 1 of 8 teams registered for the day.

Glass House Mountains played 3 games (2 wins and 1 loss). This put them into the Quarter Finals up against Gympie. We won convincingly with a score line of 11-2, to send the team into the Semi-Finals.

In the Semi-Final, Glass House Mountains played against a well organised and drilled Noosa side.

Glass House team played well, but the Noosa team was too good on the day to hold Glass House out is a shortened semi-final to win 4-2. If given another 10 minutes of play, I believe the score line would have had a very different result. Due to the break required by Noosa before their semi- final game against GHM the actual playing time had to be reduced.

The Noosa Team went on to win the final for the day. Glass House Mountains overall result for the day was 3rd position out of 8 teams.

Team Members for the day consisted of Craig Palmer (Coach), Eve O’Mara (Captain) (GHM), GHM Players - Danny O’Mara, Andrea O’Mara, Damien Powell, Alicia Evans, Elias Evans, Desley Palmer, Anthony Palmer, Hayden Campbell and Caboolture Players - Donna Thomas, Darrin (Unit) Merrett, Kelly Henricksen and Mark Henricksen.

I would like to congratulate the Coach and all Players for their great effort for the day as well as getting up at 5.00am in the morning to travel to Maryborough in order to play the first game at 9am.

This is the first time many of our young players have experienced the Representative side of Touch Football and from the positive feedback I have received from them, they will be there to play again as they all had a fantastic experience.

Alica Evans (GHM) was awarded player of the day by the coach (Craig Palmer) and captain (Eve O’Mara). Alicia put up a great effort in attack and defence and managed to score 2 individual tries by outsmarting the teams defence.

Monday, April 22 - The Lady Presidents Financial Day. Teams of ladies (and some men) from all the other bowls clubs in the District plus ladies and men from Glasshouse came together for a game of bowls and a luncheon. The team with the highest winning margin was from Narangba, skipped by Joan Pringle. Coming second was the team from Caboolture Lakes, skipped by N. Fenwick. Drawn from the hat was the team from Woodford, skipped

by Faye Clark. Together with fine weather, great company and a good meal courtesy of Club Glass House, the day was a great success.

Wednesday, April 24 - Ladies Bowls Day. One game of Triples and two games of Pairs were played.

Thursday, ANZAC Day, April 25 - At 1.00pm after one minute silence and reciting the Ode, a bowls competition was held between Ex Service personnel and civilians. The Diggers versus the Civvies. With many members of Club Glass House and Bowls members being Ex Services Personnel. The winners were the Diggers with 151 points defeating the Civilians with 88 points. As an extra bit of fun there was a test to see who could bowl, corner to corner, and land their bowl on a target. At $1.00 a go, with proceeds to Legacy, there were 200 attempts but only Bill Tumbridge was able to achieve this.

Saturday, April 27- Men’s Championships continued. The Final of the Men’s A Grade Singles was played between Ross Siegle and Gary Lehmann.

Ross Siegle won and is the Club Men’s A Grade Champion for 2013. Congratulations Ross. In Round one of the Men’s Pairs Championship, Brian Fogarty and Mac Townson def Robbie Dean and Terry Little.

Family fun day with the Twinnies Have you wanted to take a look at the Twinnies Pelican and Seabird Rescue centre?

Well, now you can find out why the Bondi Vet – Dr Chris Brown – thought it was such a fantastic place run by some of the most dedicated wildlife carers in the country.

The centre relies on community and volunteer support to keep providing the specialised seabird care and rehabilitation for which the Powers twins – Bridgette and Paula – have become internationally recognised for.

Come along to their Family day, 10am til midafternoon on this Saturday (May 4) being held at the centre on Steve Irwin Way, just the other side of Landsborough towards Caloundra.

There’ll be face painting, sausage sizzle, lucky dips, and more.

Special guest Jake Philpott, who has been shortlisted for one of ‘The Best Jobs in the World’ will be there, as well the Twinnies themselves.

You can also say hello to their jellybean eating pet pig, and meet all the wonderful birds they are caring for at the centre.
