Hi Everyone Well most of you know that my favourite time of the year is Christmas – but I have to say that being a Glasshouse Country local, my second favourite time of the year is Strawberry Season.

Before we lived in this area I always was partial to a strawberry – but now I realise that I have become much more aware of how the strawberry production is coming along each season, and when I first see one of those quirky looking strawberry picking vehicles out in the field my heart skips a beat – and I say a little quiet cheer.

Early last week I popped into Vecchios at Beerburrum as I was putting together some information about what to do with the little people during the school holidays – and there they were, my little red jewels all packed into a beautiful plastic presentation case.

Mmmm those strawberries were just delicious, so sweet and tasty, so if you feel like I do about these little red treats then you might want to pop into Vecchios with the kids, and they can feed the goats and play in the playground (check out page 16) or if you live at the other end of our readership area Strawberry Fields at Palmview also has plenty on offer for a family fun day (see their ad on page 18) Hope you all have a berry good week.

Our Glasshouse powerhouse Mount Mellum’s Lindsay Sutton is no stranger to international athletic success. At the young age of 23, he has already won a swag of gold medals. He is the current world title holder in the hammer throw and discus, but it’s the opportunity to represent Australia in the Paralympic Games in London that has him really excited.

And he reckons it’s not his competitors that will be making him nervous when he lines up to compete in Shot Put, but the fact that an estimated 1.9 billion people across the globe will be tuning in to watch the nine day event from August 29.

“The Paralympics is just such a bigger stage to perform on,” he said.

“At any given moment, there are around one million people watching events at the Games, and that’s the major difference from any of my previous competitions.”

The intellectually disabled athlete, who has been competing in shot put, discus and the hammer throw since he joined Glasshouse Little Athletics 13 years ago, is in top form ahead of the Games, and says he will be aiming for a bronze medal when he competes on September 7.

He said his biggest threat will be another Aussie, Tasmania’s Todd Hodgetts, but Lindsay isn’t fazed.

And with the weight of the support of the Glasshouse Country behind him, and the eyes of the world on him, we don’t think there’s anything this young powerhouse can’t achieve.

The London Paralympics will take place from August 29 to September 9. Lindsay will be competing in his first heat on September 7, so keep an eye out for broadcast details in coming weeks.

Athletics is Australia’s most successful sport at the Paralympics to date, and this year is the first year since 2000 that paralympians with an intellectual disability have been allowed to compete.

Much needed funding boost for Beerburrum Hall The Beerburrum School of Arts is set to receive a facelift after receiving more than $6,000 in funding from the Sunshine Coast Council.

Membership of the Hall Committee, only $2.00 a year, is the main funding source, along with hall hiring fees, and the committee are calling on anyone in the local community who isn’t already a member to sign up.

“At the moment, we have 71 members on the books, our highest membership ever, which is in no small part thanks to the efforts of our current secretary Sarah Frahm-Bell, and Ron and Joy at the Beerburrum Post Office,” Helen said.

She said being totally reliant on volunteers, the Hall Committee is always looking for new members and help with fundraising.

Divisional Councillor Rick Baberowski met with members of the Hall committee last week to present the funding, which will be used to give the outside of the historic building a fresh coat of paint.

Treasurer Helen Manson said the committee was extremely grateful for the grant funding of $6,035.00 (plus GST), which together with an emergency grant of $2,000.00 they also recently received, was the first funding the hall had received from the Sunshine Coast Council.

The emergency funding, received earlier this month, was used to purchase a new mower.

The Beerburrum Community Hall, as it is more commonly known, was built by returned servicemen in 1916, when one of its main uses was as a library.

Today the hall, owned and run by the Beerburrum Hall Committee, is still regularly used by the community, and relies on the hard work and fundraising efforts of the Hall Committee for all of its funding, general upkeep and maintenance.

Sharing the joy of reading The joy of reading is not lost on the residents of Embracia, and this is especially the case for those residents who can no longer enjoy the pleasure by themselves, thanks to a group of volunteers from the Friends of Beerwah Library.

Residents at the aged care facility in Beerwah look forward to their regular reading sessions with one of the Library’s nine volunteers, who perform a variety of roles, from reading one-onone with residents, to exchanging library books and reading to small groups.

Beerwah Library’s Home Service Program coordinator Karen Ferguson said the program, which started in September last year, offers a free service delivering books and other library materials to housebound members of the community, based on their needs and preferences.

A better bridge on Meyricks Road?

Recently, Sunshine Coast Council completed construction of a new single lane reinforced concrete bridge to replace the old timber bridge on Meyricks Road at Glass House Mountains.

Divisional councillor Rick Baberowski said the $432,000 bridge provided a much longer lifespan and improved flood immunity.

One regular user, Glasshouse Country Coaches Manager Gary Edwards, said the new bridge enabled safer travelling on Meyricks Road.

“We use this road frequently during our school runs and the old wooden bridge was often tricky to negotiate due to it being barely wide enough to accommodate our busses,” he said.

“Because the new bridge is wider, it allows a much easier and safer crossing for our drivers and this is very important to us given that we’re transporting school children.”

However according to one concerned local, Steve Ralph, who lives on Old Gympie Road, but has used the bridge to visit a friend, the bridge is an accident waiting to happen.

“My concern is that the bridge has been placed in the wrong position,” Mr Ralph said.

Steve said the new bridge lines up directly with a tree, located only eight metres from the guardrail.

“I would like to know the name of the engineer responsible for putting the bridge in this location, as I believe it has the potential for endangering lives.”

“The old bridge didn’t line up with the tree, so why is this one?” he asked.

Mr Ralph also questioned what other local users of the bridge thought.

“What about the residents in the area who use the bridge daily? What do they think about it?”

GCNews has put in a request to Sunshine Coast Council to explain their design and approval process for new infrastructure such as the new bridge on Meyricks Road.

Online access makes it easier to interact with council

Sunshine Coast Council has launched several online modules as part of its eBusiness strategy, providing customers with more ways to access their information and communicate with council by facilitating a range of 24/7 self-service interactions.

The new services improve the way the community engages with council by simplifying processes for bill payment, licenses, permits and requests. Customers now have an alternate method for these transactions, adding to phone, online chat and customer contact centres.

Register with MyCouncil (online registration system) to access the Online Services module, where you can sign up to receive your rates notice via email. To register, go to www. mycouncil.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au or use the new top level navigation on council’s website.

Modules include: MyCouncil, the first step is to register with MyCouncil to get access to Online Services; Online Services; Mobile sites and MyMaps.

Council will release further online modules later this year, including online building applications.

Calling all young and emerging tertiary art students Sunshine Coast Council is seeking entries for the prestigious Sunshine Coast Art Prize Tertiary 3 (SCAP T3). This art award offers prizes totalling $6,000.00 to emerging tertiary students.

SCAP T3, offering a $3,000.00 award in both ‘Two Dimensional’ (2D) and ‘Three Dimensional’ (3D) categories, will be a showcase of the region’s young and emerging artists.

The prize is open to all undergraduate tertiary students living or studying on the Sunshine Coast.

Sunshine Coast residents who are enrolled as undergraduates in tertiary institutions in other regions can also enter, as can those who are studying via accredited online courses.

To be eligible artwork must have been completed between July 1, 2011 and July 2012.

To enter students need to complete an entry form which is available by visiting council’s www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/sitePage. cfm?code=arts-competitions by July 6.

There is nothing more tantalising than the aroma of a freshly brewed cup of coffee first thing in the morning. When the cup of coffee is accompanied by a delicious assortment of delicacies and a really good cause, who can resist it? When Glasshouse Country Christian College held its Biggest Cuppa for Cancer, no one even tried to resist the temptation.

This is the third year GCCC has held its Biggest Cuppa for Cancer. Mandy Ward, GCCC’s Kitchen Garden convenor, organised the event with the help of some very wonderful parents.

The volunteer kitchen garden bakers worked hard and long to produce a luxurious and decadent spread. There were cupcakes, savoury mini muffins, chocolate biscuits, ginger kisses, lemon meringue pies, custard tarts, passionfruit slices, carrot cake and much, much more.

GCCC mums, Kelly Yeo and Beck Demerutis joined Mandy in hosting the event and were

Voices on the Coat National Year of Reading Students from varying grades at Beerwah State School attended ‘Voices on the Coast’ on Tuesday, June 5. ‘Voices on the Coast’ is a festival to promote authors and their latest books. Children commented on how encouraging it was to learn how the authors work out their ideas for books, become authors and promote their books. They also attended workshops by photographer / author Jan Latta and author Christopher Cheng. Many of the author’s books are located in your school library. A special thank you to volunteer parents who taxied students to the venue.

Community Group Updates The Glasshouse Mountains Musicians Club Contributed by Dr Michael Whiticker

Over 40 people attended the Musos Club at the Sports Club last Thursday, with a very full program of 10 acts for the night.

Regular performers included Mick Od, Mick Shipley and Frank Moroney, who won the award this month for his thoughtful contributions to the club’s nights.

Pam Moroney entertained us with a short set including a number from Burl Ives which took us back to the 50s, and Gary Josland showed what a superb performer he can be in the acoustic vein with his set featuring an exquisite version of the Diamantina Drover. Newcomers ‘The Merkins’ had a lot of fun with their send up of ‘The Devil went down to Georgia’, and it was a pleasure to hear powerhouse rock vocalist Paul Mckenna with Michael Bochow on guitar and Sheree Bochow on sax, presenting the night’s fullest sounding set complete with backing tracks.

I was pleased to welcome newcomer Andy H, who I had known from my North Queensland days. Andy said he hadn’t played for a while but was keen to give us three funky originals, and GCNews welcomes contributions from all local community groups and service clubs. Another newcomer was Maleny resident Richard Bojack, with three deeply felt originals reflecting on his life experience. Richard informed us he was new to performing and lacking some confidence but he has all the necessary ingredients for the stage, and is certainly a strong song writing talent.

We welcome Andy and Richard back anytime.

I met Tommy Leonard last month at our Bob Dylan night and he returned for this event with three little known but beautiful songs, including one of his own inspired by a combination of a trip to the Tamworth Country Music and tantric sex.

It may have been difficult for a mere mortal to decipher his intent with that introduction, but his song – uplifting and haunting with a finely wrought melodic line, soon made his inspiration of minor interest. Tommy is a musician who possesses a soaring voice and intricate finger style guitar technique. Catch him if you can!

1.6kg chicken 1 tablespoon soy sauce 1 tablespoon dry sherry 1 tablespoon lemon juice 2 teaspoons of soft brown sugar Lemon Sauce 2 spring onions (optional) Half a cup lemon juice Half a cup caster (superfine) sugar 2 teaspoons dry sherry 1 teaspoon soy sauce 1 tablespoon cornflour (cornstarch) Half a cup water Salt and pepper to taste

Method 1.Preheat oven to moderate 180'C (350'F/Gas 4).

Remove giblets and any large deposits of fat from chicken. Wipe chicken, pat dry with paper towels. Tie wings and drumsticks securely in place. Place chicken on a rack in a baking dish.

Brush with combined soy sauce, sherry, juice and sugar.

2. Bake chicken 1 hour or until juices run clear when flesh is pierced with a skewer.

Baste occasionally with remaining soy mixture.

Remove from oven, leave covered with foil 10 minutes. Remove string before serving hot with Lemon Sauce.

3. To make Lemon Sauce; cut onions into long thin strips; place in iced water until curly.

Combine juice, sugar, sherry and sauce in pan.

Blend cornflour with water in bowl until smooth.

Add to pan. Stir over medium heat 4 minutes or until sauce boils and thickens slightly. Season to taste; stir in spring onions.

Not too late to vaccinate for flu season Queensland Health can confirm the flu season has officially begun with almost 130 cases reported across the state earlier this month.

The number of cases per week has been rising since early May, and the recent figure was four times the average of 32 cases per week reported statewide over the first four months of the year.

Acting Senior Director Communicable Diseases branch Dr Frank Beard said that although flu season is upon us, it’s not too late to vaccinate against the potentially serious disease.

“Vaccination is the best protection against this disease but as it takes up to two weeks to be fully effective, I urge people to visit their local GP or immunisation provider as soon as possible,” he said.

Dr Beard said it is especially important for people at greater risk of severe influenza to be vaccinated, including pregnant women, people aged 65 and older, Indigenous people aged 15

The enthusiastic group of photographers are from the talented U3A Beerwah Grafx group that meets at the Beerwah Library each Thursday afternoon. From 2.00pm – 3.00pm they are volunteer Computer teachers for Friends of the Beerwah Library and then the rest of the afternoon and evening is spent learning the art of photography and the intricacies involved in photo editing programs such as Picasa, Adobe Photo Shop, Corel Paint Shop Pro, Photo Shop Elements and Camera Raw. The passion of this ‘specialised’ group is admirable, as some come each week from Kawana, Caloundra, Maleny, Mapleton, and Buderim as well as the local Glasshouse Country area to improve and share their skills and knowledge with each other.

You wouldn’t normally consider a trip to the fruit shop as a way to keep the kids entertained in the holidays but a trip to Vecchios on Steve Irwin Way at Beerburrum has a few unexpected surprises that will bring a smile to their little faces.

Imbil competitive trail ride

The weekend of July 7- 8 is the date for horse riders to compete in the beautiful scenic Imbil area with a competitive trail ride with a difference.

This time all the 10 judge points will be completed at the ride base at Imbil Showgrounds in keeping with the English version of Le Trec upon which Sunshine Coast Trail and Endurance Riders Inc (SCATER) is loosely based.

The usual format for a Competitive Trail Ride (or CTR) is having at least one and maybe two judge points at the base before riders head off following a marked track (18 to 22 ks) where they will encompass another eight judge points or obstacles before returning to base and completing the competition.

However, for a change, this will be a spectator sport because five judge points will be completed before riders head off into the forestry and on return, they will complete the remaining five judge points.

SCATER is a great club encouraging horsemanship skills as well as camaraderie. We want to encourage more riders to come along and have fun – trail length is anticipated to be at least 18 kms with a smaller loop for beginners. Camping at Imbil Showgrounds, nominations must be received

Coonowrin Road Upgrade We live at 50 Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains, and would sincerely like to thank Hansons Quarries and their manager Craig Stevens for instigating the funds to pay for the works recently carried out in front of our properties on the afore mentioned road. Along with the other property owners involved, we have endured years of severe dust problems but all grievances fell upon deaf ears until Hansons Quarries came to our rescue. LANDSBOROUGH AND DISTRICT HISTORICAL SOCIETY Inc

John Tytherleigh, Councillor and Entrepreneur John Henry Edward Tytherleigh was thrifty, enterprising and industrious, yet unassuming. Born at Islington London in January 1867 he migrated to Brisbane arriving in September 1886. After working for Archbishop Webber and a Drapery in the city he took a position with Draper Mr D McNab in Landsborough in 1890.

In 1944 at a dinner held in Manttan’s Guest House Landsborough, his staff and friends honoured 50 years of successful business in the area. Cr. H. Bray told how a very small thing had changed the whole course of life for Mr Tytherleigh. A misunderstanding over a pair of scissors had severed his connection with McNab in 1894 and he set up his first Landsborough store on the veranda of a building on Station Road Landsborough.

His entry into local government was within the Caboolture Divisional Board where he advocated for a reduction in the size of the area, believing that the large size of the area led to inefficient control and retarded progress in the area. In 1912 when the Caboolture Shire was split up he was appointed Chairman of the new Landsborough Shire.

John advocated strongly for the Great North Road culminating in its naming as the Bruce Highway in the Landsborough Shire Chambers.

He was a strong advocate for parks and gardens, electricity and a water supply on the Obi Creek to serve the Maroochy and Landsborough Shires. He was a prime mover in the establishment of the Landsborough ambulance, Landsborough School of Arts and the Shire Chambers (now Landsborough Museum). His business empire extended to shops in Landsborough, Woombye, Maleny and Caloundra and a 500 acre dairying property in Baroon Pocket. Landsborough Museum holds several items from John Tytherleigh as well as a large collection of photographs.

From Rick Baberowski Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council Phone: 5420 8987 Four weeks in and the new council is making some real progress towards bringing down a responsible budget. We are still largely focused on whole of region issues and I’m pleased to be getting a grip on some local projects such as the development of the natural play area in Skippy Park. I met on site with staff to review the stage 1 work so far and I’m pleased to report that some minor changes will be made and that the maintenance schedule will be upgraded to ensure it functions well and stays in great condition. Council is considering budget allocations for further stages in the budget, so more on that in future columns.

An important moment occurred when the new council confirmed that over the next four years council will continue to strive for the Sunshine Coast to become Australia’s most sustainable region – vibrant, green and diverse. That means strengthening the economy, protecting the environment and celebrating the character of our diverse communities.

On the subject of our diverse communities, I’d like to encourage us all to become more active tourists in our own division. We have a truly outstanding range of scenic spots that often only local residents know about. I’d like to hear from you about where your favourite spot in the division is so that your special space can be the best kept secret between you, me and the Glasshouse Country community. As an example, one of my special places is the drive along Bald Knob Road. It might be better to wait until the road slip repairs are completed but in any case it’s a slow and winding road with many stunning vistas across the mountains to the coast. I’d love to hear from you about your favourite places too and in sharing our best secret spots help remind ourselves what a special area we have.

I’m confident the community will soon agree with me, as we start to get our various projects up and running.

Rural Roads Council has completed a two-day workshop with Moreton Bay Council, in partnership with the Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ).

One of the key focus areas of the workshop was the development and management of rural roads. The two councils have agreed to join forces to lobby for a review of the Australian standards to allow for more flexibility in discretion of standards and expenditure.

In the hinterland region, this is an area we really need to look closely at how we can be more cost effective without compromising safety. With our current budget allocation on the Sunshine Coast of around $3 million allocated each year for the whole of the region it’s only providing us with 6 to 7 km of new road seals and this is from a total of over 700km of unsealed (gravel road) network uncompleted (primarily located in the hinterland regions). I have followed up and am scheduled a meeting with the newly appointed LGAQ project officer in road infrastructure to ensure that the matter is pushed forward.

Green June Why not celebrate all things eco-friendly by getting involved in Green June, the biggest environmental event month of the Sunshine Coast calendar year?

There’s a heap of Green June activities happening across the region, including : - Living Smart workshops at the Nambour (June 20, 27) and Maleny Libraries (June 25).

How standard is the standard variable rate?

Despite the fact that Australian mortgage holders seem to hold their collective breath at the beginning of every month in anticipation of the RBA’s decision, what really impacts on home-owners is the interest rate YOUR bank is charging you for YOUR home loan.

Most borrowers, thanks to bank marketing, would be familiar with the term ‘standard variable rate’. And while all the major lenders used to offer almost exactly the same standard variable rate, the changing financial landscape of the past couple of years means there is www.gcnews.com.au

now considerable disparity in what is on offer.

While many borrowers may mistakenly believe that the standard variable rate was similar to the RBA’s cash rate, this is far from the truth.

Each lender sets its own individual standard variable rate, this is not an industry wide measure, and it’s largely just a marketing tool.

The standard variable rate is very much the bank’s ‘premium’ rate and while it may be the most appropriate rate for some borrowers,

many of that bank’s home loan products are often available at a rate that is significantly below this.

However, just what rate you end up paying can be determined by a number of factors.

Generally speaking, the more you borrow, the more scope you have to secure a lower rate.

A loan of in excess of $150,000 will attract some form of discount, with many of the better rates available on loans of $250,000-plus.

Those looking for a ‘no frills’

product may be best off with what is known as a basic loan.

This generally comes with a lower interest rate with no or low monthly fees attached.

In comparison, professional packages are a way of combining a loan with other bank products such as an offset account or credit card.

They offer the extra benefit of discounted interest rates and lower fees but generally have an annual fee attached.

Cansurvive - Cancer Support Group

Cansurvive is a cancer support and information service. Support Groups are held each fortnight and are open to members of the public. A group that both uplifts and supports on the path to healing. We aim to help people with cancer see a broader view of the body’s healing journey. The Cansurvive Centre provides an extensive library, holistic and main stream medical information, counselling, meditation, practitioner listing, educational seminars and support groups.

The Support Groups are held every second Wednesday morning from 10.00am to 12.30pm.

GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY ANGLICAN CHURCH

Phill Wyllie Glasshouse Country Uniting Church Harry Stafford was a businessman from Chicago.

He was also a Christian and I want to tell you that Christians are not exempt from problems and financial loss and suffering. Well, he suffered some really serious financial losses.

He had to declare himself bankrupt and he lost his home. He sent his wife and four daughters to France to stay with some friends while he tried to sort out his financial problems and get back on his feet again. In mid ocean the passenger ship collided with a tanker and sank in 12 minutes. Two hundred and thirty people drowned. And out of his family only his wife survived. She telegrammed from France, ‘saved alone. What should I do?’ Mr Stafford was overcome with grief. He had lost his fortune. He had lost his home. His four precious daughters were buried in a sunken ship. His wife was in shock and filled with grief on the other side of the world. What would he do? He did the only thing that he could do, he ran into the arms of the risen Lord and that night he wrote a hymn and sent it to his wife. This is what he wrote: When peace like a river attendeth my way When sorrows, like sea billows roll; Whatever my lot, thou hast taught me to know, It is well; it is well with my soul It takes a living saviour to make a person’s heart feel that way. And it takes the living Christ in our hearts to face losses like Harry Stafford did and to come through it as he did.

This is what you and I need today. We need to have the living saviour in our hearts.

He wants to give you His peace – that is the peace that carried Him through His ministry on Earth, his betrayal, the abandonment by his disciples, his spiritual separation from Father God as He hung on the cross and died for our sins. Jesus was thinking about you when He died on that cross and He did everything necessary to give you peace in the midst of your problems and provide you with a future. All you need to do is to receive it from Him.

Beerwah Golf Club Our Ladies Club Championships are over for another year. Well done to Hollie Sinclair for becoming our Club Champion for 2012. Hollie has come through our Junior ranks, guided by Joan Harvey amongst others, to become not only a great golfer but a fine young lady as well. Hollie had rounds of 75, 79, 77 and 81 off the stick for a four round total of 312.

Runner up in the Gross event was Andrea Campbell who, after rounds of 91, 90, 85 and 87 finished with 353 off the stick.

Our B Grade Champion this year is Mavis Brimelow, our hard working Vice Captain. Mavis played her four rounds in 101, 94, 100 and 99 for a total of 393 off the stick. The Runner up in the B Grade Gross was Noelene Annakin with rounds of 96, 104, 104 and 105 for a total of 409 off the stick.

C Grade was won this year by a very happy Julie McMahon. Julie had rounds of 112, 114, 111 and 109 for a four round total of 449 off the stick. There was just one shot to the Runner up, Debs Rutherford who had rounds of 116, 114, 111 and 109 for a total of 450 off the stick.

A Four Round Nett event is run in conjunction with the Championships and the winner of the A Grade Nett was Heather Henn with a four round total of 309 Nett. The Runner up in A Grade was Karen Kemp with a total of 319 Nett. Ruth Bowie took out the B Grade Nett with a total of 323 Nett and Jan Corfield won the C Grade with a total of 324 Nett.

So that is that for the Ladies Club Championship for 2012. Congratulations to all our winners and those dreaded words for the rest of us ‘there’s always next year’!

In the Men’s Club Championships It took a while for Huey to get his act together, but the boys were finally able to finish the last two rounds of the Men's Championships. The first two rounds were played on May 26 and 27, however the next weekend was rained out so the fellas had to wait until last weekend to complete the event.

With four great rounds of 71, 70, 72 and 79 for a total of 292 off the stick, the Club Champion for 2012 is Graeme Murray. The day was made that www.gcnews.com.au

much more special for Graeme when his son Noah became Junior Champion with a two round total of 228. Garth Bailo was Runner Up to Graeme in the Gross event with a four round total of 308 off the stick.

Tony Sedgeman took out the B Grade Championship with rounds of 85, 85, 90 and 94 for a total of 354 off the stick. He was followed by Graham Trevenen who shot 363 off the stick over the four rounds.

The C Grade Champion for 2012 is Graham Black.

Graham shot rounds of 90, 87, 83 and 100 for a total of 360. Runner Up in C Grade, with a four round total of 380, was Tyson Blair.

Tyson began his golf at Beerwah under the watchful eye of Joan Harvey and has developed into not only a great golfer but a wonderful young man.

The Senior Championship is run over two rounds and our Senior Champion for 2012 is Wayne Maw. Wayne shot rounds of 82 and 78 for a total of 160.

Congratulations to all the winners for this year. Let's hope the weather is kinder to us next year.

The Glasshouse Hinterland AFL Under 7s and 10s would like to send out a big thank you to the Maleny Apex Club for their assistance with the purchase of new goal post pads. The club has recently completed a second oval for the U10s to use in their local competition. The goal post pads will be put to good use when the club hosts a mid-year carnival at the Landsborough ovals this Sunday, June 24 from 8.30am. They will be hosting sides from Maroochydore, Nambour, Bribie and Caloundra.

On Saturday, June 23 the Lions will also be holding a double header to determine who gets top of the ladder honour's with the Under 18's and Seniors playing against the Caloundra teams. The 18's who have been playing some fast paced action in recent weeks, lead off the day at 12.00noon followed by the Seniors at 2.00pm. An entertaining day of football at the Tunnel Ridge Road sports ground is expected and we welcome new spectators.

Glasshouse Pony Members - Samantha Lupton, Belinda Short, Emma-Lee Forster, Chelsea Davis, Hannah Giblin, Shana Hill, Aiden Pearson, Kayjae Moore and Courtney Hull all competed in Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show Friday, June 15 and Saturday, June 16. Competing in the Hacking, sporting events and Jumping, they all did exceptionally well, coming home with lots of ribbons.

Friday Night Tennis – The finals went ahead without any rain which was great. The players all played well and some of the matches were very close.

Contributed by Bob McLean Phone: 0427 606 240 Who would think we are almost to the end of the first month of winter. It’s a great time to set up at a potting bench with the winter sun at your back and taking off a few pups. This year has been a great one for plants to send out new pups.

The cloudy wet season has also provided a different range of leaf colour.

I would like to talk about Aechmea fasciata.

Their diversity of form, long lasting flowering period and adaptability to cultivation makes them possibly the most widely known and cultivated of all the bromeliad family.

The attractive foliage, long-lasting in fluorescence, and overall hardiness, all serve to make them a most popular choice with growers.

The leaves may be banded or spotted with silver, black or maroon, or completely silver, so dark as

to appear almost black. While others may be bi-coloured with green above and wine red reverse, completely wine red or soft shiny green.

The leaves may be heavily spined or hardly spined at all, and they can grow quite large (1.5 m) while others are quite small (30 cm) with all sizes in between.

A general growing temperature range is about 7° C to 30° C. However, plants which are indigenous to areas close to the equator or from north-eastern Brazil (where hot humid winters occur and any rainfall occurs during the summer months) will require some care if one is growing them in areas where definite winters are experienced.

Aechmea fasciata would probably be the bestknown and most widely grown Aechmea. The large, showy, pink long-lasting bracts and blue petals changing to rose red as they age, never fail to captivate.

It makes an excellent indoor potted plant and also adapts very easily to mounting on driftwood, old stumps or on living trees, especially those with horizontal limbs and rough, permanent bark.

This variety will also be seen, Aechmea Silver Vase, and grows as a single specimen or a clump depending on the space you have available.

Go Green Rainforest Nursery plant of the week Daintree Penda Lindsayomyrtus racemoides One of our favourite rainforest trees is the stunning Daintree Penda. The flushes of new growth on this tree hang limp and display amazing shades of blue, purple and pink before hardening off to a glossy green leaf.

Larger specimens in full flush are impressive. It is a small to medium tree in SE QLD that is best grown in a semi shaded position. As its name suggests it is found in the Daintree area from Cooktown south to Babinda. It produces

fragrant five petalled flowers which make way for a green fruit capsule containing brown seed. This is a must for any collector and also makes a good tub specimen in a protected position.

What was Mountain View Garden Centre – and will soon become Glasshouse Garden Centre – has recently undergone a change of ownership and Bob and Anna think that locals will be pleased to see what they’ve done.

Local pineapple industry at risk

Peak industry representative body for pineapples, Growcom, said that the final pineapple Impact Risk Assessment for Malaysian imports released last week was a slap in the face for the Australian industry and had put pineapple growers’ futures on the line.

Chief Executive Officer Alex Livingstone said that the Federal Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (formerly Biosecurity Australia) had dismissed the Australian pineapple industry’s legitimate concerns about two serious disease threats.

Mr Livingstone said Growcom and the state Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry had provided detailed scientific submissions on the potential risks posed by bacterial fruit collapse and heart rot.

However, the final IRA, while acknowledging the submissions, had changed little from the draft version.

“The IRA allows relatively unrestricted access for Malaysian pines and has not recommended any special quarantine protocols for these two diseases, dismissing them as minor risks,” said Mr Livingstone.

Chris Fullerton, Chairman of the Pineapple Growers Advancement Group (PGAG) and fourth generation Glasshouse Country pineapple grower said the two diseases posed a significant and unacceptable risk to an iconic local industry.

“The Australian government is apparently prepared to jeopardise Australia’s ‘clean and green’ status and allow this risk to pineapple growers,” he said.

“This treatment of our industry is a severe blow to the morale of stakeholders and could curtail future investment and expansion, despite promising developments in new varieties.

“We see no public good in imposing this major biosecurity risk to domestic production,” said Mr Fullerton.
