Hi everyone

Last month we started what I would love to make a weekly feature in GC&M News called ‘Take me away’.

We introduced you to Teena and Steve Chumbley, the owners of local travel company The Infinite Horizon.

Each month Teena will share some of her and Steve’s amazing travel experiences and photos that will no doubt inspire others to one day experience first-hand the beauty and wonder of Africa.

When Teena sent us her beautiful photos this week we couldn’t go past putting one

of Steve on the front cover.

While travelling internationally is going to be out of the question for quite a while, and even travelling across the borders in Australia isn’t likely until September, there is nothing to stop us learning more and planning for those future opportunities to open up again.

I am keen to encourage others to share their stories of travel, whether they be in Queensland, the rest of Australia or internationally to give us all a bit of inspiration.

Local News Dining out post COVID 19

By Lea Parkes Like everyone, the past few months have been strange for us, with so many aspects of our lives that we take for granted suddenly not available to us.

I can cope without being able to go to a footie match, or even seeing a movie at the cinema. However, not being able to go out for lunch on a weekend, and just relax and enjoy a cappuccino is something that I have definitely missed.

So when the announcement was made that cafés were allowed to open in a restricted way to serve only 10 diners at a time, I started to look forward to the idea of drinking a barista-made coffee.

And having a meal served on a plate and not out of a paper bag started to feel very glamorous.

So last week I caught up with Julie Male, the owner of Mrs Brown’s Café at Beerwah to ask her how it was all going to work.

While Julie was really happy to be welcoming diners back into the outdoor eating area she explained that there had been a fair bit of planning involved.

To ensure you don’t miss out, Julie is advising customers to book a table and to be aware that diners are only able to stay for one hour.

When you eat you also need to register your name and contact details in case down the track you need to be contacted for COVID-19 tracing.

Julie explained that they were required to keep these details for 28 days and that they were then shredded.

Diners are asked to enter the café via the ‘in’ access. Wait staff make sure you are aware of the requirements and then ask you to use hand sanitiser before you can take a seat at the table.

After diners leave, the tables are cleared and cleaned down by a staff member wearing gloves.

So on Monday we headed into the café and the whole process worked like clockwork.

Their chef must have been working in fast forward as both my very tasty Turkish steak burger and Brownie’s tender taco trio and the great coffees were on the table in no time.

We had a chat to both Simon and Shelby who are long-time staff members at the café. They said they were pleased with how the new system, which had only been operational for a couple of days, was working.

Simon at the entry way to the café were really understanding and pleasant while coping with the adjustments.

The night before we had our first inhouse dining experience since COVID 19 restrictions were enforced I had seen a television news story about a restaurant in Brisbane that was also checking people’s temperatures as they arrived.

This isn’t part of the required process cafés need to follow, but considering how good the coffee tasted, it would have been worth it if it was.

Mrs Brown’s Café is at the Beerwah Village and is open for breakfast 8am-11am Monday-Saturday, on Sunday all day and for lunch from 11am Monday-Saturday.

Playgrounds reopen and work begins at Turner Park Some good news for parents is that playgrounds across the Sunshine Coast Council area re-opened from last Saturday, May 16, as part of the Queensland Government’s plan to ease COVID-19 restrictions, with a maximum of 10 people to use a facility at any one time.

Council is regularly cleaning public facilities but suggests that if people have concerns they can clean and disinfect play equipment before their child uses it and that they wash their hands before and after use.

If you have been in Turner Street at Beerwah this week you may have noticed that work is now under way on the next stage of the redevelopment of Turner Park.

Sunshine Coast Division 1 councillor Rick Baberowski said the redevelopment of Turner Park had been called for by the community, with the vision to transform the location into a destination playground for Glasshouse Country townships and beyond.

“Late last year a major stage was delivered with the completion of a highly anticipated new playground for children of all ages,” Cr Baberowski said.

“The playground was replaced as part of the community-led master plan for this district level park.

“Uniquely designed to help kids stay active and build confidence, the playground incorporates the town’s fruit farming history in the toddler section and boasts an 8.5m tall multi-level play tower.

“This latest stage of works includes concrete link footpaths, lighting and electrical works, stone clad seating wall, a custom entrance arbour, park seating and planting and softscape works.

“Works are estimated to take eight weeks to complete (weather and site conditions permitting),” Cr Baberowski said.

Sailing A B Sea during lockdown?

By Sonia Clark Over the last couple of years, regular readers may recall stories that have followed the intrepid adventures of ‘grey wet nomads’ (and former Beerwah residents) Barry and Aannsha Jones, who have been following a rather exciting lifelong dream to sail and scuba dive the world.

While we have certainly enjoyed living the high seas life of the couple vicariously, as well as sharing their trials and tribulations, it’s worth noting that prior to departing Australia to commence their aquatic adventures, back in December 2017 neither Barry (Baz) and Aannsha actually knew how to sail!

So this brings us to now, and in the time of COVID lockdowns and restrictions across the globe, we thought we’d check in with our favourite sea loving adventurers to find out what they are up to – and where?

Currently, the couple are spending lockdown at a small boat yard on Evia Island, Greece.

One of the great things about following Baz and Aannsha online is that as well as

being prolific with their Facebook posts which depict life onboard their 14 metre (46 foot) 1995 Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45.1 yacht (named A B Sea), their daytrips and visits to a myriad of exotic locations and ports, and often candid yet humourous - insights into their active retirement life, the couple also regularly post blogs about their adventures for extra insight.

Pre-lockdown, the couple had been planning to base themselves at a Marina in Kas, Turkey, sailing the Turkish coast and “spending nights anchored in incredibly beautiful secluded bays” from April to December 2020; while also offering a “liveaboard” experience to others considering making a lifestyle change from living on land to living on a sail boat.

However, with DIY maintenance a constant reality when living on a boat, Baz and Aannsha were caught up in a boatyard on Evia Island, when lockdown was enforced.

yachts from sailing meant the couple must remain on Evia Island until the virus is contained.

Aannsha said that during the initial lockdown period movement was restricted and the couple had to log their trip into a government website beforehand and carry a permission slip – however, thankfully some of these restrictions have now been lifted.

“We are coping well with the lockdown, the boatyard where we are living is pretty isolated, so we haven’t had a huge change in our lifestyle. And it’s in an attractive beach setting, so we really can’t complain,” Aannsha said.

Currently the couple are spending their days working through their “boat jobs list” which is well documented on their blogs and social media, and spending time exploring locally, filming and editing.

While much of their trip has involved incredible experiences such as sensational sun rises, swimming in crystal clear waters, chilled sundowners and lots of laughs, it has also contained its fair share of daunting challenges that come with the liveaboard lifestyle.

Barry said that although an awesome experience, the reality is that it's not all unicorns, rainbows and sundowners in the cockpit with newly acquainted yachtie friends.

The couple are working hard to get all the boat jobs done to ensure A B Sea is once again a fully functioning vessel, with future horizons of sailing east through the Greek islands of the Aegean Sea beckoning.

Business News Op shops starting to re-open Across Glasshouse Country and the Blackall Range we have some wonderful op-shops including Lifeline and Bloomhill in Beerwah, Vinnies in Landsborough, Bloomhill and Salvos in Maleny, Salvos at Montville and the RangeCare Op Shop in Mapleton. They all enjoy great support from locals.

When the op shops were forced to close due to the COVID-19 restrictions it was hard for those who like to shop and particularly those at home who were busy cleaning out their wardrobes and cupboards, piling up great donations for the stores. The community organisations that run the op shops have also taken a significant financial hit to their bottom line.

Bloomhill op shops at Beerwah and Maleny reopened their doors on Monday, May 11, as part of a trial by Bloomhill to open seven of its op shops in a bid to generate much needed funding to keep its services running.

The shops are now open Monday-Friday 9am-2pm but are closed on Saturday.

The shops are operating with strict social distancing protocols in place.

at Montville has reopened Monday-Friday 10am–2pm and Saturday 9am-1pm.

Bloomhill CEO Chris Franck said the organisation was opening its op shops as Bloomhill was in dire need of income from the shops to continue to provide its critical services supporting those living with cancer.

“Thanks to the JobKeeper payment scheme our op shop managers are back on board, rearranging access and fitting out with social distancing measures and signage,” Mr Franck said.

“We are also ensuring all op shop managers have successfully completed the government infection control training for COVID-19 and that all volunteers are informed and willing to embrace new store practices.”

In line with the new state and federal guidelines, social distancing will be strictly monitored with restrictions around the number of people inside the premises at any one time and safe hygiene requirements including having hand sanitiser available for customers.

“You can rest assured we are doing everything we can to ensure the safety of our customers, staff and volunteers,” Mr Franck said.

“We hope the community will support

Stores will only open during the trial period if sufficient volunteers are available.

New future on horizon for Maleny Credit Union

By Greg Brown The sustainable future of the Maleny Credit Union (MCU) hit a major hurdle in mid-March this year when MCU CEO Tony Ziemek announced to members that the federal Treasurer Josh Frydenberg had unexpectedly scuttled the preferred takeover bid by finance company Firstmac Ltd. In a letter dated March 17, Mr Ziemek advised members that the deal, which had been meticulously negotiated over a two-year period, fell through because, according to Mr Frydenberg, the acquisition “… would not be in the national interest”.

“This has been a very lengthy process and the board is deeply disappointed that such a beneficial outcome for our members has been rejected,” Mr Ziemek wrote to members at the time.

The primary reason given by the Treasurer appears to relate to ownership issues that may have wider implications for the banking system.

“Arguments for community benefit and competition with the major banks have not been able to overcome this concern,” Mr

Ziemek said.

“This is despite a similar transaction receiving Treasury approval in the past, which gave the parties a reasonable expectation of success.”

Since then, the organisation has worked hard to identify an alternative investor to best meet the financial and social needs of the business and its members.

As a result, on May 8 the MCU board chair Sarah Davies announced that a potential investor had come forward.

“We have negotiated a favourable proposal which, if it is approved by members, will enable the significant value built up in MCU over its proud 36-year history to be realised for members and the community,” Ms Davies said.

The transaction involves the acquisition of the credit union by private investors led by Lakeba Group, a technology group headquartered in Sydney.

“Their intention is to build on our heritage, expanding our customer-first philosophy across Australia, while retaining the deeply personal service we pride ourselves on,” Ms Davies said.

Founded by Giuseppe Porcelli in 2013, the Lakeba Group is a future-focussed tech business platform that uses artificial intelligence and sophisticated algorithms to conceive, create and commercialise innovative technologies.

Mr Porcelli describes himself as an innovation evangelist with commercial acumen and a proven track record of driving value for his teams, partners, businesses and investors.

“I constantly look to disrupt the status quo and build new business models. I am a blockchain and cryptocurrency enthusiast, active in the global blockchain community and currently harnessing the power of blockchain to develop new services, a number of which Lakeba has launched in 2018,” Mr Porcelli said.

Community News Giving back to those who give so much

belief that the Lakeba Group and its buyout offer would deliver a great outcome for MCU members and for the Maleny community.

The offer includes, among a raft of items, the Lakeba Group paying about $6.7 million for the business. Members will receive $1,500 as part of the acquisition - $750 in cash and $750 in shares in the ensuing entity. The MCU Charitable Trust will also receive a donation of $1 million.

All MCU staff will be retained and the Maleny branch will continue to operate for at least the next ten years.

Sunshine Coast Council has a range of new grants available to assist those impacted by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

COVID-19 community response grants include four categories: • Operational and maintenance (funding up to $5,000) • Continuity and connectivity (funding up to $5,000) • Capacity building (funding up to $3,000) • Facility improvement (funding up to $10,000).

Applicants can make two applications per round but they must be in different categories.

Applications must be in response to a COVID-19 impact and demonstrate

evidence of financial hardship and/or need for funding assistance.

The COVID-19 community response grants are now open and applications close Monday, June 1.

As well as these grants, the council has expanded and increased its emergency grants to help not-for-profit community organisations requiring a rapid response.

Applicants can now apply for up to $3,000, subject to eligibility criteria. The council aims to process emergency grant applications within two weeks.

The show is off the show holiday is still happening

Both Maleny Show and the Nambour Agricultural Show have been cancelled this year for the safety of our community.

However, the show holidays remain.

For those in the southern part of the Sunshine Coast Council area, you will have a public holiday on Friday, May 29 for the Maleny Show Day. For those in the north of the Sunshine Coast Council

area, you will get the public holiday on Friday, June 12 for the Nambour (Sunshine Coast) Show Day. Both show societies are preparing bigger and better shows for the community in the future!

Emily Shepherdson

Last week we featured Emily Shepherdson on our cover. She is a dynamic lass who continues to impress us with her proactive approach to embracing rural life.

From her innovative idea to set up a virtual cattle show in response to current restrictions, to her ongoing involvement with local agricultural shows and work with local businesses, we think she makes a brilliant young ambassador for our region and look forward to encouraging her nomination for a Maleny Show Personality 2021 role. We thought we’d find out a little more about this inspiring young local.

Q: Tell is us a little more about yourself?

A: I’m 16 years old and attend Maleny State High School in year 11. I live with my family in Maleny and we have two other family properties including 300 acres at Caboolture that we run cattle on. I’ve been involved with cattle through the Maleny High agricultural program

since I started high school and have also judged cattle at various agricultural shows around the region. I love playing piano and singing, as well as learning new ways to crack my stockwhip!

Q: Tell us more about what is involved with cattle judging?

A: Basically, it is a competition to test your knowledge of cattle, so you are placed in front of four animals - bulls, heifers or cows. You then place them in order based on their capacity and structural correctness but, most importantly, the ability to produce high quality calves (mostly for meat purposes). You then present your judgement in front of an audience and are awarded marks depending on your accuracy of observations and how well presented you are. The number of marks you receive will determine your placing.

I have been competing in judging for the past three years, including at the Gympie Show (winner in the junior class 2017), Sunshine Coast Show (placed second and third for the two years I went), Maleny Show (winner senior class 2019) and Imbil Show (winner 2019 senior class, 15-25 year age group).

Q: You also work locally at Maleny Dairies – what do you love about your job?

A: My job at Maleny Dairies consists of talking to lots of different people who come from all parts of the world. I take them on an hour and a half tour giving them an insight into what happens at the farm. I have only worked there for little over a year and I am always learning new things about the dairy industry. I love teaching people about any type of cattle and especially when I am expanding my knowledge on the species. It makes me happy when people are engaged and having fun on the tours! It really is a great job.

Q: What are your future plans?

A: I would still love to have my cattle, producing both commercial and stud animals, and take them to shows. Cows

They are extremely smart and they will probably teach you more about yourself than any other animaI. I also love horses and would love to teach people to ride. Horses have helped me through some tough times and through them I have met some amazing people who have inspired me to work hard and become the rider, teacher and especially the person I wish to be. I love both of these types of animals and each hold a special place in my heart, so ideally, I’d be happy working with either in the future (but hopefully both).

250 candles for Glass House Mountains birthday It’s a significant event that came and went with little fanfare but Member for Glass House Andrew Powell wants to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the naming of the Glass House Mountains by then Lieutenant (later Captain) James Cook.

Mr Powell said that last Sunday, May 17, was the exact day 250 years ago that the Endeavour sailed past and Cook named the mountains.

“Many of us know the rich Indigenous history and legend associated with the mountains and nearly all bear an Indigenous name,” he said.

“But not so many know it was Cook that gave the formations their collective name.

I’m privileged to represent an electorate named after these striking mountains that tower high above the landscape and can be seen from afar – from almost all of Moreton Bay in the south up to Buderim and Ninderry in the north,” Mr Powell said.

“Forget the beaches, it’s the Glass House Mountains that draws tourists and locals alike. Just take a look are how jam packed the carparks are each weekend.”

that “these hills lie but a little way inland, and not far from each other: they are remarkable for the singular form of their elevation, which very much resembles a glass-house, and for which reason I called them Glass Houses”.

“How proud he would be to know that 250 years later, these mountains are still a cherished Australian icon”, Mr Powell said.

“In commemorating the 250th anniversary of the naming of the mountains, I also want to acknowledge locals like Ivon Northage and Ron Gillinder and the team at Celebrate Glasshouse Country, who have done so much in the way of educating locals and tourists about Cook and Flinders initial discoveries,” he said.

Roger Reilly, of Celebrate Glasshouse Country, points to their YouTube channel and a series of short videos on the explorers that were associated with the Glass House Mountains.

“There is even one on Lieutenant James Cook narrated by the late Ivon Northage, who was a passionate exponent of this amazing part of the Sunshine Coast hinterland,” Roger said.

Beerwah Library is preparing to re-open

Sunshine Coast Council Libraries, except Maleny, will re-open their doors to a limited number of customers at any one time from Monday, May 25 following further easing of COVID-19 restrictions.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson said that when the libraries re-opened a total of 10 customers would be permitted inside library branches at any one time.

Customers will be able to pick up reservations, and choose and borrow library items. Visitor numbers in the library will be monitored and customers will be required to comply with social distancing requirements and other measures.

The library Click & Collect service remains available for Sunshine Coast Libraries card holders and the community is reminded to make use of extensive online programs and the eLibrary service.

The one exception to the re-opening on May 25 will be Maleny Library, which is currently undergoing refurbishment and will not re-open until June.

A limited Click & Collect service will be available at Maleny.

Returns chutes are available at all libraries and Wi-Fi remains available.

She didn’t have the best start in life, but with a lot of TLC from our wonderful foster carers she has blossomed and developed a wonderful quirky personality. Emily is probably a little more independent but will certainly lap up attention given to her and reward you with a very loud purr and on the occasion a little love nip.

Emily would prefer a relatively quiet household free from young children as she can be easily startled. This girl does have a minor medical issue that the refuge is happy to assist with. All of Emily’s vet work has been done and she is ready to go to her new home today!

Hinterland Families Fun and adventure for kids during isolation One night a couple of short months ago borders were closing and Monica Murray lay wide awake, pondering what the future would hold.

As an international student she had many concerns - family overseas, the continuation of her studies and the security of her part-time job as an au pair in the hinterland (to name a few).

Instead of scrolling mindlessly through social media until she felt sleepy, Monica lay there thinking of the posts that had resonated with her since she decided to stay and continue her studies at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

“Use this time to do something you’ve always dreamt of doing” was the overwhelming message.

“My brain then went to children’s book, which is something I’ve wanted to do since I could write. Like magic, the rhymes started writing themselves in my head,” Monica says.

She grabbed a notebook and pen to

capture the tale as it flowed seamlessly from her mind.

Her inspiration? Coronavirus.

“The world was going into lockdown, my university was going online and I knew I wanted to do something really productive in my spare time to make my dream of being an author come true and bring some joy back into people's lives,” Monica says.

“I hope this book will bring families together both for reading time and for play time. I'd love to hear a parent tell me that they read my book last night and their children got really inspired about what activities they wanted to do for the rest of this week, and next week.”

‘The Isolation 100 for Kids’ is a beautifully written and illustrated e-book that gives families practical, whimsical and adventurous activities they can do together in their homes with things they already have.

“As both an au pair and a pre-service teacher, I know how important it is for children to not only be physically safe but emotionally safe in knowing that they are being taken care of, that they have someone to talk to and something to keep themselves busy with. With a background in advertising and digital design, Monica was able to bring her vision to life in just a few short weeks.

The stunning illustrations were the result of an online collaborative effort, with Monica reaching out to international designers to bring her words to life.

Monica says like many people who are separated from their loved ones with borders closed around the world, she misses her family terribly. They are enduring much more severe lockdown regulations in South Africa.

“These regulations can be tough to adhere to when all we want to do is get back to ‘normal’ but they exist to keep us safe

and to keep others who may be more vulnerable safe from us. So in adhering to these regulations, which stem from advice from renowned professionals, we begin to flatten the curve and slowly 'earn' back a sense of normality.”

Local songwriter, musician and community radio presenter, Deni Chapple, said that while she acknowledged that current restrictions had certainly impacted the music and entertainment scene, she had found that for many, new doors had opened, with artists now being given an excellent opportunity to tap into a natural or neglected passion.

“I have used this time as an advantage to write Deni Chapple more original songs and am now in the process of completing my first originals album,” Deni said.

“Interestingly, although the social side of playing music has altered, I have found that networking with new musicians, as well as latent talents or passions for playing an instrument, writing or even learning a new song has become stronger.”

Heavily involved in the local music scene, Deni has been primarily supporting community festivals and concerts, events which combine supporting local musicians and fostering an inclusive community spirit.

Deni said during these challenging times, where people have been forced to deal with more solitude, many creative types had begun to question their capabilities or perhaps miss the approval of an audience.

“It has accentuated the realisation that music, just like Dr Who's Tardis, can take you to another place and time in any life situation. One just needs to believe it and believe in yourself,” Deni said.

Working with uncovered talent to create arrangements and experimental combinations not considered before, and sending out new recordings to her music network, have been some of the creative projects Deni has been involved in during this time.

“Even during this time of isolation and restrictions, through collaborations and continuing to share recordings, it has allowed a deeper tapping into that creative side or discovery of one you never thought you had,” Deni said.

Music nourishes her soul

By Sonia Clark Award winning local songwriter and founder of Sunshine Coast Songwriters Roundtable collective, Mira Chorik, has found that after some initial hurdles her creativity has soared during the time of COVID restrictions. The Belthorpe based performer has enjoyed a long-standing interest in music and creative pursuits, first picking up the guitar when she was 17.

Mira said that for many years she has been inspired to create music that is as soul nourishing as possible, extending herself to pen her first song around ten years ago, though it took another five years of writing before Mira felt she had humbly earned the title of songwriter.

Seeking to nurture a pool of creativity for other local songwriters, Mira established the Songwriters Roundtable group earlier last year with monthly meetings initially held at people’s houses, acting as an encouraging and supportive space to cultivate creativity, share songs and connect.

The meetings had moved to a more professional venue space in Nambour, but with the onset of social distancing and closures of venues - the group was put into temporary limbo.

“Initially, like so many other artists, the situation was quite discouraging at first. Many of us had lost gigs and in some cases our livelihoods, with not being able to perform out,” Mira said.

“However, like others, I journeyed through that and came to appreciate the renewed opportunity to be focussed without the usual distractions and my creativity has gone through the roof.”

Using Zoom, Mira has since taken the group online with fortnightly open mic sessions open to all musicians, poets and artists, and said the biggest challenge has been merely navigating the technology.

“The online group has allowed us to come together again, and regain a personalised connection, which is important as songwriting can sometimes be a lonely process without feedback and support,” Mira said.

“It’s wonderful to experience live energy again and I think people are grateful for the space to be nourished,” she said.

During this time, Mira said she has been grateful to have her creativity and song writing to fall back on and she has appreciated the time to have more focus and energy to pursue and create what is of essential meaning to her. www.songwritersroundtable.com

Dinner for four or lunch for three days

You know when you hear a song and it stays in your head for days? Well I have different problem - when I read something it stays on my mind for days.

Last week when I was doing a final check of the newspaper pages before they went live, I found myself reading the Baan Thai’s family special for $62.

For the next few days it got me thinking about my favourite Thai foods - chicken and basil or chicken and cashew stir fry, chicken Pad Thai and a curry puff or two.

Brownie’s favourites are generally one of the hot curry dishes with steamed rice and some spring rolls.

When we have dinner at Baan Thai in Beerwah this amount of food is really a bit too much for us, so we try not to get too carried away.

However, in this COVID-19 world where take-away is now how we roll, I excitedly realised that we could order the Baan Thai’s family special, eat it over about three lunches and what a great idea that was.

We phoned through the order, they called when it was ready and we just headed in and picked it up. It was a total winner, great value, a time saver and the best part - it was super tasty!

A Backward Glance Proud traditions of Maleny Show

The 83rd Maleny Show should have been held this year on Friday-Saturday, May 2930. However, the show has been cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions and no doubt the thoughts of thousands of locals will turn to what they will miss from their favourite annual family event.

Agricultural shows have a long tradition in Queensland and are still important events for local communities to gather and celebrate their farming achievements, showcasing their livestock and produce.

Agricultural shows have been a part of Australian culture since 1822 and are strongly connected to local communities through educational, competitive, social and cultural experiences.

These shows such as the one at Maleny would not go ahead without the tireless work of local volunteers who provide so much of their time to make the show a success for all who visit and compete.

The show includes special competitions to encourage rural youth such as show personality, rural ambassador and charity person.

Not to be missed are the horse events, beef cattle and dairy sections, exhibits of champion livestock and competitive horsemanship that includes some of the best show jumping and dressage in Queensland.

There is also the excitement of the woodchop and the splendid display of all types of poultry. Needleworkers and the best cooks of the district vie for champion quilt, sponge cake or marmalade maker.

Health &Wellbeing Digital image scripts launched

On Friday, May 15 prescriptions went digital in Queensland.

Minister for Health Steven Miles said the change would better align Queensland to the special arrangements recently announced by the Australian Government that allow the supply of PBS medicines through a digital image.

“We have made the necessary regulatory changes so that vulnerable people can have their medicines prescribed by their usual doctor and dispensed and delivered by their usual pharmacy without having to leave their home,” Mr Miles said.

“This provides Queenslanders with more options so they can receive the care they need and reduce the need to leave the house and sit in a waiting room alongside other patients.

“Although digital prescriptions are now available, the existing prescription process will stay intact for those still wishing to process their prescriptions as they’ve always done,” Mr Miles said.

The digital prescription changes will remain in place until the end of September this year, allowing time to further develop technological changes to the prescription process.

The Australian Dental Association (ADA) is reminding Australians that it is time to think of your teeth and return to your dentist.

As coronavirus restrictions are eased and dental practices open up for the full range of dental procedures once again, the ADA hopes people will book an appointment with their dentist.

The ADA is concerned that people may have neglected their teeth while stuck at home during the pandemic.

There is also concern that while at home there was the temptation of sugary pantry treats more often than usual.

It’s also a good time to remind people that everyone has their part to play in maintaining optimal oral health with four regular practices: • Brush your teeth twice a day with a toothpaste containing fluoride • Floss daily to remove bits of food stuck between the teeth • Reduce sugar intake. Most adults still consume far too much sugar. The World Health Organization recommends limiting sugar to no more than six teaspoons a day or 24 grams • See your dentist regularly.

COVID-19 respiratory clinic at Sippy Downs

A GP-led respiratory clinic has been set up in partnership with Ochre Health and the federal government. It is located next to the Ochre Health Medical Centre in Sippy Downs.

Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said that this was one of the 100 GP-led respiratory clinics around the country that the federal government was establishing to assess patients with mild to moderate flu-like symptoms that could be COVID-19.

“At this difficult time we need to reduce pressure on GPs and hospital emergency departments and keep staff and patients safe,” Mr Wallace said.

“That is just what this federally funded clinic will deliver. If you have a fever, cough, sore throat or other respiratory symptoms, this is now the best place on the Sunshine Coast for you to be assessed.”

People attending the clinic will be assessed by a GP or a nurse under the supervision of a GP, and have a specimen taken for pathology testing if that is indicated.

They will receive clinical advice on how to manage their symptoms and an initial follow-up phone call or text message with any test results.

Dr John Hall, Ochre Health director of medical services and president of the Rural Doctors Association, said the clinic had strict infection controls and safety measures in place to protect staff and patients. He said part of this was a ‘no walk-ins’ policy.

“It’s really important that people make an appointment and follow our team’s instructions when they arrive,” Dr Hall said.

“The new clinic has been established to support people suffering from any mild to moderate respiratory symptoms, keeping them separate from other patients at general practices and health facilities, thereby protecting both staff and patients. It will also enable greater numbers of people to be tested for coronavirus, and for positive cases to be identified and isolated quickly in order to minimise the spread of the virus.”

Elected Representatives Rebuilding and recovery with Andrew Wallace Federal Member for Fisher

These have been dark times for many in our community but the Sunshine Coast has not given up.

I am now turning my attention to what I can do to help our region rebuild and recover after this crisis.

I have recently announced three projects, funded by the federal government that will support jobs and bring visitors to the hinterland.

I delivered a grant of $486,111 for Maleny Showgrounds to expand workshop and office facilities and install new wheelchair accessible amenities.

This is going to make sure that 2021’s show is bigger than ever, create much needed work for local builders and draw even more visitors to the hinterland in the years to come.

I can’t wait for next year!

I announced that the hinterland will soon receive a new Telstra base station with the support of federal government funding, providing improved mobile coverage in and around Booloumba.

This will join the towers we have funded in Peachester, Glass House Mountains and Beerwah, and help make living and working in the region easier.

I also announced that Australia Zoo, one of our region’s biggest employers, will receive around $1 million from the federal government during this crisis to look after their animals and ensure they are ready to open, employ more locals and get visitors here as soon as restrictions are lifted.

Among many other initiatives, I will be fighting for more projects like these to help support our local economy in the months to come.

Postcard from home with Mark McArdle

State Member for Caloundra Our local landscape here in the Caloundra electorate is truly something to behold. Not only are we blessed with some of the region’s best beaches but our hinterland towns are framed by such unique mountains that they inspired a journal passage by Lieutenant James Cook during his journey along the east coast in 1770.

He wrote “… they are remarkable for the singular form of their elevation, which very much resembles a glass house, and for this reason I called them Glass Houses’.

Of all the incredible places Cook saw on the journey, including may more hills along the coast, he made special note of how remarkable the Glass House Mountains and their landscape were.

While there may be many diverging views on the role Cook played in our country’s past, I think it should remind us of what we have right here in our backyard.

As our economy begins to recover and, with luck and hard work, our movements become less restricted perhaps we should not be so quick to fly away, as it were.

Perhaps, we should consider staying home a little more often to rediscover the wonders that Caloundra and the hinterland have to offer.

After all, people all over the world dream of taking holidays in our region.

I would love to see a trend where we start sending our family and friends beautiful postcards from our own towns and iconic landmarks to show gratitude for this incredible place we get to call home.

First meeting for term with Winston Johnston

Division 5 Sunshine Coast Council At the first meeting for this term Cr Rick Baberowski was elected as the Deputy Mayor. The meeting was live streamed on council’s website, which will be the process going forward for all future ordinary and special meetings.

The first ordinary meeting of council was held on Thursday, April 30 at which Cr Dickson and I were appointed to the Customer Excellence Portfolio with overall responsibility for customer service standards, service reviews, monitoring satisfaction levels, development and delivery of annual core capital works programs, development and delivery of council’s asset maintenance program, local law reviews and development assessment services and monitoring.

All councillors are undertaking a welldeveloped program of induction and training which continues each day until the end of May. The state government has devolved a wide range of responsibilities down to local government, and the significant levels of accountability are complex and in some cases onerous, but necessary.

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions, I have been unable to visit each town and district, which is quite frustrating as I wish to better know my division, its businesses and residents, and each area’s special needs. Hopefully with the gradual easing of restrictions, I will soon be able to perform this vital and necessary role as part of my normal duties.

This council contains a good mix of both experienced and enthusiastic councillors and is well supported by an experienced management team, capably led by acting CEO Warren Bunker.

In the Garden The new ‘it’ thing to grow this year … cucamelons Gardening is just the same as all other parts of life there are the latest ‘must have’ plants, those new varieties that you just have to grow before the Jones.

Over the years there’s been the spaghetti vegetable, black tomatoes, luffa gourds and the miracle berry … most are just fads but sometimes they’re a little gem that will become a staple in gardens around the nation.

And I think cucamelons fit very nicely into this latter category.

Not being on the cutting edge of chic gardening, I think I missed the first wave of cucamelon madness, so I can’t claim to be a trendsetter.

Cucamelons are from the cucurbit family, so are closely related to cucumbers, marrows, melons and pumpkins.

They originate from Mexico and have been cultivated as a domestic crop for hundreds, maybe thousands, of years by indigenous Mexican civilisations.

They seem to have hit the headlines in the early 2000s as a quirky ‘new’ vegetable to grow. Launched as the micro-melon, they were marketed as rare, having been discovered by Dutch food producers in South America who brought them to the Netherlands to cultivate in greenhouses.

So, as you can see, I’m no food fashionista but better a late cucamelon convert than never.

You can buy them as packet seed if you look around. You’re more likely to find them on the stands with the international flavour seeds.

They are super, super easy to germinate so don’t go overboard. Just sow a half a dozen seeds to start with. I grew six plants and planted four. So far, that seems to be enough to keep the two of us in plentiful supply.

They grow as a sprawling vine and will need at least two square metres of climbing space per plant … although they will take over whatever growing support you supply.

Make sure it’s not too high as they will grow and fruit right to the top - and I don’t want you tumbling off a ladder just to pick a bowl of cucamelons.

I’ve got mine growing up a tube of wire in a large pot, all of which is inside a net enclosure made of a bamboo frame.

This is to protect them from possums, rats, king parrots and every other creature that seems to think my garden is their all-youcan-eat buffet.

The cucamelon vines have done so well that they’ve taken over the whole space and are expanding out of the enclosure. Luckily, a light trim of any wayward stems is a good thing as it forces the plant to branch more and so produce more.

The tiny yellow flowers are self-pollinating, so every flower will most likely produce for you, which makes it lucky that the fruits are small.

The cucamelon fruits really do look like a cross between a cucumber and a watermelon … just much smaller.

Each fruit is about the size of a very big grape.

In flavour they’re just what their name describes … maybe more cucumber than melon.

Some people describe them with the ‘superfood’ tag but that’s a big call considering they’re just a little cucumber.

I’ve taken to them, which is big as I’m a long-term non-cucumber eater.

Being so small, they’re perfect in a salad or I’m eating them just as a healthy snack (no calories in a cucamelon).

I’ve been halving them and quick curing overnight in a simple sweet pickling solution (just white vinegar, water and sugar). This gives them a nice bitey edge and takes away some of the raw cucumber taste (a definite positive for me).

If you want, you can pickle them for longer to develop deeper flavours using chilli, dill, mint, mustard seed, garlic or rosemary.

They can be sliced and used in burgers or sandwiches. They can be speared with a toothpick and floated in a martini cocktail.

They can be chopped and mixed into cottage cheese to make a dip.

I really do think that these versatile little fresh vegetables (technically, they’re a fruit) deserve a place in everyone’s garden. So next time you’re looking at the seed stand, take home some cucamelons and give them a go.

Please find enclosed a picture of our gerbera.

We inherited this beautiful flower and a few more from my mother-in-law nine years ago from her garden to care-take for her when she had to go into care herself.

She passed on seven years ago and over time they were neglected, and last year they nearly died. But more recently, given some TLC and repotting them, this year this particular one flowered for us on Mother’s Day! Janice from Peachester

What a lovely story Janice and such a beautiful specimen too. It shows that plants can have powerful emotional attachments and for it to flower on Mother’s Day was maybe her way of saying hello to you both.

I have a pot of old-fashioned urn orchids (or ground orchids as I knew them growing up). They came from my grandmother’s house. She had a big bed of them outside her back door.

Almost everyone in the extended family

has a pot of Grandma’s ground orchids as, when they flower, they are a vivid reminder of her and her lovely old house.

They too are neglected but every year they flower brightly and I know that it’s a connection I have with cousins across the country as they’ll be seeing flowers at about the same time too.

So cherish that gerbera Janice and I hope you can pass it onto someone who will cherish it and it will bring memories to them whenever it flowers.

Proving himself The new CEO of a company comes into work determined to turn things around.

Trying to prove himself to his new employees, he looks around the office and sees a guy leaning against a wall doing nothing. He approaches the guy and asks him, "What do you think you're doing?"

The man replies, "I'm just killing time, waiting to get paid."

The CEO is furious, "What do you make a week?"

The man tells him, "About $200 a week."

The CEO pulls out his wallet and hands the man $400 and says, "There's your two weeks, now get out of here!" After the man leaves he turns to his employees and asks, "What do you think about that?"

One of the employees stands up and says,

"I think he just got the largest tip he's ever gotten on a single pizza."

Hard of hearing?

An elderly man thinks his wife is losing her hearing so he calls their doctor. The doctor tells him, "We need to figure out how bad her hearing is. Using a normal tone, talk to her at various distances until she can hear you."

That night the man decides to try this. He estimates he is sitting about 10m from his wife and asks her, "What's for dinner?"

He hears nothing so he moves a little closer, about 5m away. He asks her again, "What's for dinner?" Still nothing.

Finally, he gets right next to her and asks, "What's for dinner?"

She finally hears him and responds, "For the third time, chicken!"

A man named Tom meets a man named Clark at a party on the 30th floor of a building.

They get to talking and Clark tells Tom that the wind is just right so that if you jump out the window you will circle the building and fly right back in.

Tom naturally doesn't believe him.

Clark proves it by jumping out the window a few times and coming right back in.

Finally Tom believes him and he jumps out of the window breaking every bone in his body.

Clark's girlfriend Lois turns to him and says, "You can be a real jerk when you're drunk Superman."

Sport Competition play at Maleny Golf Club

Contributed by Jenny Oxenham It is a pleasure to hear that our members and visitors are back to playing golf on our great course, which is in peak condition.

Also great news was that we had celebrity golfer Adam Scott come to the course and play golf with our professional Wayne Perske. The verdict on the course from Adam was that he found it to be a great course with many challenges.

On Saturday, May 9 the club held an 18-hole single stableford event in A grade. First place went to Rob Ashton with 35 points on a count back from Mick McCombe also 35 points, runner up Thomas Hallam 33 points and third Craig Thorne 32 points on a count back from Corey Zammit 32 points. In B grade, first place went to Sarah Harding with 37 points, runner up Neil Stenhouse 33 points and third John Hay 31 points.

On Saturday, May 16 the club held an 18-hole single stableford competition. In A grade first place went to Mick McCombe with 37 points on a count back from Andrew Whitmore 37 points, runner up to Scott Heywood 36 points and third Peter Easton 35 points. In B grade first place went to Reily Moffat with 37 points, runner up Rob Bailo 35 points and third Kristofer Minns 33 points. In C grade first place went to Neil Stenhouse with 33 points on a count back from David Killeen 33 points, runner up Billy Perske 32 points on a count back from Bernard Duncan 32 points and third to James Hocking 31 points, also on a count back from Eve Beaman 31 points.
