Who are our local candidates? Sunshine Coast Council elections will be held next March but candidates are making their presence felt already to gain some traction with local voters. A recent divisional boundary realignment meant that Division 1 candidate James Grimard now resides in Division 5 and so has changed his nomination accordingly. With the divisional boundary changes, you may have moved into a different division from the last council election in 2016. The official Electoral Commission of Queensland search function is yet
to be updated, so if you’re unsure check using this document – www.ecq.qld.gov.au/__data/ assets/pdf_file/0027/6696/SCRC_Appendix-AFinal-Maps.pdf – or ring the council on 5475 7272 and ask them to check for you. Candidates already nominated and who have contacted GC&M News are: Division 1 – Rick Baberowski and Jenny Broderick Division 5 – Winston Johnston, Clive WaringFlood, Kiti Bruinsma, James Grimard, Tracie Sanim and Tracy Burton (The Greens). Mayoral – Michael Burgess and Chris Thompson

Back to school for council candidates Reforms to the rules for local government councillors and mayors were introduced this year, which will see some significant changes. As part of the Crime and Corruption Commission’s Operation Belcarra, the changes address issues of integrity and accountability in local government. One reform means that all candidates in the March 2020 local government elections, including sitting councillors and mayors who plan to run again, are now required to complete an online training course before they nominate. Local Government Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the training was integral to promoting community confidence in the sector. “Queenslanders deserve representation of the highest calibre and mandatory training will mean they have elected officials who have a better understanding of their responsibilities and obligations when serving their communities,
Mr Hinchliffe said. The training includes information such as obligations in relation to reporting donations and expenditure during the campaign as well as the requirement to have a dedicated bank account. It also details responsibilities once elected, such as understanding conflicts of interest, the code of conduct and requirements involved with a councillor’s register of interests. The training can be done online or in a classroom session and takes about an hour to finish. Candidates are then issued with a certificate of completion. If you plan to throw your hat into the ring at the next local government election, you can find more information about the training as well as other information and resources at www.dlgrma.qld.gov.au/candidates. Class dismissed.
