eing the editor of a local paper, I definitely find I get some unusual requests – however this year when the Beerwah Charity Sports Day committee asked me to be a judge for the Scarecrow competition I was really excited and jumped at the chance. Well that was until I realised just how many people would get motivated to make a scarecrow – yes 40 scarecrows in total. Not surprisingly everyone who took up the challenge took the task really seriously – and there are some amazingly creative scarecrows keeping vigil over their owner’s properties across the townships. As a judge, I must acknowledge that I don’t have any agricultural qualifications, or even gardening experience.

Hi Everyone

I may not be able to vouch for how successfully they may keep crows away from crops – but what I can guarantee is that many of them will bring a smile to the faces of people travelling past them. Also, as Brownie and I are the judges, we did not include our GCNews ‘Super Scarecrow’ as part of the competition. However, we definitely would have scored highly for comic appeal, in particular with his face I created for him which makes him look like Superman ‘in drag’. So congratulations to everyone who participated; you did a great job! See photos on page 22.

Beerwah Charity Sports Day this Saturday It all starts at 8.30am at the Beerwah Sportsground this Saturday, August 24. The day’s entertainment has all the thrill of ring events and shetland harness racing, dog ute-jumping, novelty athletics for children, amazing feats of strength displayed in the strongman competition as they demonstrate their skills in lifting enormous weights, and the wonderful polish of the vehicles in the ‘Show and Shine’. There’s also the drama and expertise of the Firies as they demonstrate the hazards of a kitchen fire. The Photography Competition entries will be hanging in the Club House, and the Super Strawberry winners will be on display. For young ones, there’s the thrill of the merry-go-round and jumping castle, the chance of a sample bag from Sid the Seagull, fun and games with the Australia Zoo Croc Cruiser, cuddle and pet the animals in Party Ponies’ Animal Nursery, and look at the cria (baby alpacas) brought along by Sunline Alpacas . . . and of course, to participate in the Pet Parade and fancy dress events. There’s great value to be had with local produce of all kinds, home-made cakes, jams and chutneys; garden plants and seedlings. Come early for the ‘cream of the crop’.

And if all that makes you feel hungry you’ll be able to refuel at the barbecue stand with burgers, sandwiches, tea and coffee and icy-cold soft drinks. Add to this strawberry pavlovas, cheese and yoghurt from Maleny Cheese, ice creams and more. Many of the Coastal Village Market Stalls will be operating as part of the Charity Sports Day, so there’ll be a wide variety of arts and crafts to choose from too. The grand parade leads off at 1.00pm with members of the Maleny and Caboolture Light Horse troops showing the way, followed by vintage vehicles and tractors. And then the afternoon entertainment gets underway. Yvonne Barlow-Turner, ‘The Superdads’ and three students bands from Beerwah High will be belting out music for all tastes, the Morris Dancers will be out and about in their raggedy costumes, and the fashion parade provides a quiet moment to sit and enjoy up-and-coming styles. In all, it’s a truly great day out for all the family. Entry is only $2.00 per person, and all proceeds go the Cancer Council Queensland to help fund research. Look for the yellow posters across Glasshouse Country, check out the Facebook page, Beerwah Charity Sports Day, or call Bruce Page on 5494 9557.

On July 13, 45 rally cars and 22 support vehicles started on the 26th Great Endeavour rally from Caloundra RSL finishing eight days later at Port Douglas. Car 1959 driven by Mountain Creek local Heather Christie and Navigated by Jonathon Jones of Glasshouse Country First National completed the challenge that was just under 4000 kms on about 900 litres or $1,400.00 of fuel. Heather is a veteran of these type of events, now having completed in five, for Jonathon it was a new and rewarding experience. Heather said on the first day the vehicle needed to be towed out of two creeks and then out of some lantana.

Jonathon and Heather before they hit the road Jonathon said it was a standout experience.“While it was challenging, it was really great knowing the funds raised go to a great foundation,” he said. They were pleased and surprised to be awarded two prizes - First in Class ‘A’ (cars that are pre1970) and The Supreme Promoter Award at the Awards Dinner in Port Douglas. And Heather is now busy planning for next year when she will hit the road once again.

Stuck in the lantana “Over the eight days we did have some issues with overheating (usual one for the HR), broken shock absorber, broken engine mounts, broken exhaust pipe fitting, very loose steering box, sparking wires under the dash, all of which were temporarily fixed on the hop by my ‘mobile mechanics',” she said.

Winners for 19th year in a row

Contributed by Damien Bogatek Photography by Rae Josland

Beerwah State High School (BSHS) has continued its athletics dominance, taking out the District Athletics Carnival for the 19th consecutive year, this time by a mere 20 points (the points allocated for a single event win). BSHS was sitting in 3rd place behind Maroochydore SHS and Mountain Creek SHS part-way through day one of the two-day competition, with only the 400m finals remaining on the first day. BSHS went on to win four of the 10x400m finals, and placed well in the remaining races to finish the first day of competition ahead in the points by a tiny margin. Beerwah continued to chase points on the second day thanks to massive efforts by all of the BSHS team members, extending its lead throughout the day. The competition schools then stepped up the pace and began to reel BSHS back in to within 90 points and only the 4x100m relays remaining – a seemingly comfortable lead. The eventual victors weren’t flawless in their execution however, and got disqualified in three relays due to lazy baton changes (certainly an area for improvement in 2014). The nervous wait ended in relief however for the Glass House Mountains based school with confirmation of the 19th straight win. Beerwah took out three of the four points categories in the competition, the overall points, the percentage trophy (incorporating points scored and total students enrolled) and the boys overall points.

Team Beerwah

BSHS also claimed four age champions, showing the versatility of the athletes with Aidan Young (13 boys), Rowan Sutton (15 boys), Jake Chalmers (16 boys) and Connor Bosch (17 boys) all taking the points wins in their age categories. Rowan also claimed the district record in the Long Jump (6.42m) and the Triple Jump (13.37). Beerwah students all chipped in to do their bit, a job that was even more important this year with two state athletics representatives, Jess Haig and Mana Taripo out of the competition prior to day one with injury.

Connor Bosch

Both claimed district age championships in 2012 and are hoping to re-join the contest, throwing their names in the hat for Regional selection and crossing their fingers they’ll be fit to compete. BSHS would like to thank all of the carnival organisers and volunteers as well as all of the competitors for another great carnival. Good luck to all of the Central District athletes who will be vying for selection in the Sunshine Coast Regional team, to be selected at the Regional carnival on Monday, September 9 and Tuesday, September 10 at the Sunshine Coast University Athletics track.

Pain in the back? Is your back often stiff and sore? Does it take a while to get out of bed in the mornings? Have you given up hobbies you once enjoyed because the pain just isn’t worth it? Do you feel older than you really are? If so, we may be able to help.

“Just GRAD it” FUN

It is estimated that approximately 85% of the population will experience low back pain at some stage of their lives. Despite its prevalence, it is by no means normal to experience any level of pain on a regular basis.

FITNESS

The normal state of the human body is vibrant, healthy, and pain-free. If you are not feeling this way, something is pushing your body away from normal. We are all well aware that diet and exercise are key factors in keeping our bodies feeling great. What most people don’t know about is Spinal Subluxation, a term chiropractors use to describe dysfunctional vertebrae in the spine. This is a very common condition that pushes the body away from functioning normally and feeling great. Subluxations can be caused by old or new injuries, but most often are caused by repetitive stresses of everyday life. Low back and pelvic subluxations can also lead to further symptoms, such as hip and knee pain, or digestive troubles. There are many causes of back pain, and each cause requires a specific treatment. If your back pain is caused by Spinal Subluxation, the chiropractic adjustment is the only therapy that will correct the cause. To find out if Spinal Subluxation is the cause of your decreased quality of life, call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today, or visit www.adjusttolife. com.au Beerwah 5494 0499 or Maroochydore 5443 4545 www.gcnews.com.au

For the past few months I have been relieving as the Officer in Charge of the Caloundra Police Division. This will continue until the end of September. In the meantime the Beerwah and Landsborough divisions have been left in the capable hands of Senior Sergeant Darrell Hardy and Sergeants Bob Martin, Tully Anderson and Wes Sutton. Local Statistics Reported crime for the last month is comparative to last year. At the present time there has been one Armed Robbery that occurred at the Beerwah Post Office. Considerable investigations have been conducted into this matter by the local detectives and suspects have been identified. It is now the difficult task of locating them and placing them before the Courts. There were 11 burglaries of homes in the month of July of which four of these have been solved. There were also 14 vehicles that were entered and properties either stolen or removed of which two have been solved. There is still what appears to be a complacent attitude towards the securing of homes and vehicles.

with Senior Sergeant Bruce Duck

The leaving of items such as laptops and mobile phones within plain view inside vehicles provides offenders with motivation to commit crime. I implore you to remove such items from your vehicles or at the very least position them so that they cannot be seen. Drink Driving For the month of July there were 15 offences relating to drink driving. This compares to a total of eight offences for the previous time last year. Is the message not getting through to drivers about drinking and driving or is it that the Police have become more vigilant in their efforts to combat the nonsensical actions of these offenders? You be the judge. The highest reading for the month was .220 – over four times the legal limit. Be thankful that this driver did not kill themselves or any other person. The driver of a vehicle is responsible for the consequences of any action that they take. DON’T BE A BLOODY IDIOT. For those of you, and there are many who do the right thing, we appreciate it. Until next month keep safe and lock up.

Make Dad's Day at Dads Day Out Contributed by Mike Turner On Sunday, September 1 there will be a brand new Father’s Day event right here in Glasshouse Country. Presented by the local state school Chaplaincy Team there are a heap of local groups working together to put on a very special day. ‘Dads Day Out’ will be at the much loved ‘Skippy Park’ on Old Landsborough Road from 2.00pm – 5.00pm on Father’s Day. Bring the kids and come on down to take advantage of the awesome playground and scooter circuit.

You can enjoy some live music by the Superdads, have a look at some classic cars and check out the stalls being run by local primary schools, Beerwah Cycles, and local churches. There will also be a special Remembrance tent where people can take the opportunity to honour and acknowledge a loved one who they have lost. The Beerwah SES team will be directing parking in the main car park but there will also be parking along Plover Drive on the Northern end of the park. Entry is free, and Steve from ‘Glasshouse Coffee and Tea Merchants’ will be there selling hot drinks plus Rotary will be running a sausage sizzle for a small cost. Happy Fathers Day guys!

Army on the ground at Glass House At Club Glasshouse last Friday it was all action, but the only battle was ensuring the marquees went up ready for the fishing clubs, big competition that was held over the weekend. As all the funds raised from the competition are going to the Children’s Hospital at Nambour, the club was able to enlist the support of the Army’s 9th Force Support Battalion who supplied the marquee and installed it. Club Manager Sharon Bochow said thanks go to Commanding Officer Lt Col Mark Stone and the men and women of the 9th Force Support Battalion for the assistance and generosity of equipment in support of our event. The competition has been running now for 11 years and it is great to see the enthusiasm of all those involved and the friendly rivalry between club members and Club Glasshouse Manager Sharon Bochow with the men and women of 9th Force Support Battalion with visitors. YOUR LOCAL FOOT & ANKLE CLINIC

Painful feet? It’s time to call us

Locals could be forgiven for taking a second look as they drove past the Glass House Mountains Sports Club last week. Almost 100 people were seen fishing on the soccer ovals – a sight that resulted in some puzzled phone calls to the GCNews office. But the situation became plainly clear when Kylie, the Manager from the Sports Club told us it was the Biennial Australian Dryland Casting Championships. This year, the Sunshine Coast is hosting of the National Angling Championships and the Glass House Mountains Sports Club was the place of choice for the casting competition. “Last year, the Queensland Amateur Fishing Clubs Association ran their state casting titles here, and we must have made a great impression as they were really keen to come here for the nationals,” said Kylie. The coordinator of the championships, and Australian Angling President, John Crone said that the two days spent at the Sports Club were fantastic. “The grounds are just perfect for what we need and having the club close and handy makes the competition much more enjoyable for everyone. I can’t thank Kylie and the team enough for their hospitality,” he said. John explained that dryland casting, while not a mainstream sport in Australia, was big business internationally. “In countries like Japan, South America and through Europe the sport can attract 20,000 spectators to an event with significant prize money on offer.

“But in Australia, most people compete for the fun and friendships they establish over the years. “Most people competing here would also compete in the other fishing sections of the championships – where they get to eat their day's work. But there are some hard-core casters – such as the team from Western Australia – who have just come here for the casting,” he said. Over 200 anglers came from all over Australia and New Zealand competing to be Australia’s best fisherwoman and fisherman. Many competitors and their families stayed in the Caloundra area, but visited our local attractions in the Glass House Country region, such as Australia Zoo, the Glass House Mountains and the Landsborough Museum.

With winter almost gone, are you looking for some extra physical activity to get you into the summer swing? Or are you a recreational runner looking for like-minded people? Well now there’s a group in Glass House Mountains whom you might be interested in. No – it’s not a dating group, it’s an informal group for walkers and runners who meet up at the Glass House Mountains Sports Club each Sunday to adventure out into some of our great local tracks. The Glass House Mountains Running Group has been running now for around three months, and already there is a dedicated band of locals who are involved. Organised by local fitness enthusiasts Matt and Monique Montague, they modelled the idea on what they experienced when they were in the US to run the Boston Marathon. “We joined others in running groups we found through a website call www.meetup.com and really liked the friendship and fun we experienced in a casual running group,” said Monique. “So we started the Glass House Mountains Running Group and now we have around 20 people involved – it’s fantastic.” The group caters for walkers and for runners,

Part of the Glass House Mountains Running Group with a number of mum’s pushing prams and kids tagging along on their bikes. Runners meet at 6.00am at the Sports Club, and walkers and beginner runners at 7.00am every Sunday morning. “Being a social group, there’s no competition, no sign-up fees and no obligations. It’s purely for the enjoyment of exercise and running, and a way for people to have fun on a Sunday morning, explained Monique. Details on the group and the meeting times can be found on their Facebook page – just search for Glass House Mountains Running Group or email Monique at customerservice@endeavour77.com

Beerwah Lions contributing to the young Contributed by Una Robinson At the August 14 Lions meeting, President Rita Sanderson, on behalf of the Beerwah Lions Auxiliary and the Lions Club, presented Beerwah High School Chaplian Mike Turner with $200.00 from the Auxiliary and $800.00 from the Lions Club to aid the Chaplaincy fund. Become a tutor in adult literacy and help others

Sunshine Coast Council is calling for volunteers interested in enrolling in accredited training this August to become an adult literacy tutor. Community Policy and Programs chair, Councillor Jenny McKay said Sunshine Coast Libraries are offering the adult literacy training with funding support from the Federal Government’s Positive Ageing through Community Education program. “Research shows that nearly half of the Australian population cannot read newspapers, follow a recipe, make sense of timetables or understand the instructions on a medicine bottle,” Cr McKay said. “Council offers free literacy programs for adults to assist them to become functionally literate by helping with reading, writing and basic computer skills and the volunteers play an important role in the success of these programs. “Volunteers will complete an accredited training course and in turn help improve literacy standards on the Coast. “Anyone can become a volunteer literacy tutor, complete the accredited training and obtain the tools and information required to help community members improve their literacy.” There are limited spaces on the course and applicants will be interviewed prior to commencing the training. Volunteer literacy tutor training courses are scheduled throughout the day at Caloundra and Noosa libraries on August 26 and 27. To find out more about becoming an adult literacy volunteer, visit www. library.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

Time: 3.00 pm – 5.00 pm 10.00 am – 12.00 pm

These days, for small business creating partnerships and establishing strategic alliances is very important. Recently an important agreement has been formalised between Cribb Street Butchers and the kids from Landsborough Kindy. The Kindy kids have agreed to supply parsley to Bob and Shawn the butchers, completing their first delivery on August 15. The children grow the parsley in the Kindy gardens, hand pick it and then supply it to the butcher shop where it is used in the meat display counter. Bob the Butcher gratefully accepted the parsley from the children and commented on how great it will look in his meat displays. The Kindy looks forward to continuing the relationship with a fantastic local business. Next time you are in the Cribb Street Butchery in Landsborough, look out for the parsley in the display cabinets - grown and supplied with pride by the kids at Landsborough Kindy!

School News Community Spirit

Contributed by Sally Maxwell – Music teacher The Beerwah community spirit shined upon Beerwah State School’s Music Department recently when both the Beerwah Lions Club and Beerwah RSL very generously contributed funds to purchase a class set of glockenspiels. Patricia Jutila from the Beerwah Lions Club and Gavin Smith President of the Beerwah RSL presented Sally Maxwell, Classroom Music Teacher, with cheques to assist in the purchase of brand new Gavin Smith, President of Beerwah RSL with instruments for the music Sally Maxwell Music teacher room. All students from Prep to Year 7 will enjoy playing the instruments as part of their music program.

Scarecrows and not so scareycrows

Scarecrows have been making their presence felt across Glasshouse Country in the lead up to Beerwah Charity Sports Day. They have really sparked the imagination of both the young and young at heart – the Super Scarecrow at Glasshouse Country News has brought plenty of smiles to the staff and visitors. At Beerburrum State School they have been able to include building scarecrows as part of the student learning. In the technology unit, students have been looking at the process of constructing different things; first they investigate, then design, build, test and finally reflect. They have also been tied in with the school’s Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden where kids already have an interest in the topic, and can see the practical side of a scarecrow. However the students are probably like everyone else that got involved. It is great for community spirit and of course it is a great chance to get creative. More photos of scarecrows on page 22.

Peachester Playgroup welcomes ‘Scary’ new kids! This week the children from Peachester playgroup welcomed some ‘scary’ new arrivals - six fantastic scarecrows. The children have worked on the scarecrows over the past few weeks, making paper mache heads, sticking on buttons and felt for faces and dressing them in their old hand me down clothes! The scarecrows have been entered into the Beerwah Charity Sports Day ‘Scarecrow Competition’. They will be on display at the Peachester Fruit Shop for the next few weeks, so come along and check them out! If you’d like to vote for us vote number 23! 12

Brough locks in $150,000 for CCTV in Glasshouse AN elected Coalition Government would provide $150,000 funding for CCTV technology to help Þght anti-social behaviour in Beerwah and Landsborough. Fisher LNP candidate Mal Brough made the announcement this week saying he had locked in the funding should the Coalition win. "This is a practical step to alleviate a problem that seriously affects these communities," he said. "People must be able to feel safe in their main street. Businesspeople need to be reassured their shops will be the same in the morning as when they locked them up at night. I'm so glad we can make this commitment." Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Warren Truss and Mr Brough discussed law and order issues with a delegation from the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce in April.

Proven Technology

ÒThis was about listening to the concerns of locals and making sure they were heard," said Mr Brough. "Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce told us they want to keep the integrity of the town and make sure CCTV is available to clamp down on anti-social behaviour like grafÞti and break-ins.

ÒThe Carbon Tax is killing us.Ó

Mal Brough and Beerwah Chamber of Commerce president Bob McLean discuss how CCTV technology can help prevent anti-social behaviour in Beerwah. "It's a proven way to keep the towns safe with the smart use of modern CCTV technology."

Chamber president Bob McLean said a subcommittee met early this year to discuss anti-social behaviour. The sub-committee included Terry Morrow from Landsborough Pub & Bottleshop, David Coultis from Mellum Munchies, Beerwah Locksmith Adrian Korst, Rick Gazzard from Beerwah Hotel & Bottleshops, and Mr McLean, Social Inßuence Consulting Group.

ÒPrices just seem to keep going up. It makes it really hard with a young family.Ó

These businesses have installed signiÞcant CCTV networks and other systems to protect their premises and customers. "Although effective, an integrated system would maximize the beneÞts," said Mr McLean. "The level of vandalism and petty crime has been on the increase over the year.Ó The Glasshouse Country Communities are serviced with private and public CCTV surveillance. "The group believe partnership between all levels of government and the chamber would deliver a clear message on unacceptable behaviour."

ÒItÕs just getting harder and harder to employ staff.Ó

ÒIÕve been listening. The Coalition has a Plan for Real Action.Ó Mal Brough A Strong, United Team For Glasshouse Country

Commonsense from politicians?

Mooloolah Public Hall

Our local hall has provided the communities of Mooloolah Valley with a venue for public use for more than 105+ years. It is a credit to those in the community (past and present) who diligently volunteer their time to maintain and manage the hall for all to enjoy. But times change and, along with many other halls, clubs and associations volunteers are hard to find. Eventually the end comes and the doors close. Do you want this to happen to Mooloolah Public Hall? At present the Hall Association has 10 members – all senior citizens. For many years they have worked on behalf of this community to provide a safe, wellmaintained, affordable venue for public use. But help is needed from younger energy; younger ideas to keep our Hall at the heart of this community so please consider attending a meeting and showing some interest. Monthly meetings are the 2nd Thursday of each month at 4.00pm at the Hall. (Changes can be made to accommodate new members – the 4.00pm time was set to suit those on the present committee.) Our Annual General Meeting is in September (see classifieds) and new members would be most welcomed. For further information or any questions please phone 5494 7999, 5494 7748, or 5494 7793. B. Smith (Secretary) Mooloolah Public Hall Assn. Inc.

Future of local produce

Why are the fruit and vegetable producers of the Glasshouse Country region being discriminated against? Locally grown produce is tested for 135 chemicals to ensure highest producer standards yet imported fruit and vegetables are tested for only 50 chemicals. Why does this discrimination exist? Of $900 million of imported produce only 20 containers are tested. How much cadmium, formaldehyde, herbicides, fungicides and pesticides do we unintentionally eat due to lower standards imposed on imported produce by our Government? Which Government in allowing these imports decided that Australians can tolerate a higher consumption of poison in our diet? The National Toxic Network’s co-ordinator, Jo Imming has conducted testing on imported fruit and veg and attempts to share his research with Aussie buyers, but appears to have had limited success. Dr Skurray, from the University of Western Sydney also expresses his worry. “When they (fruit) accumulate small levels of pesticide, this can cause cancer, but they can also cause reproductive problems and neurological problems,” he said. So if doctors and professionals in the area are desperately trying to warn people and make a change, why is our imported fruit and veg still as toxic as ever? Why is produce bought into the country under the guise of Free Trade Agreements, with no import tariffs applied and at lower standards to domestic product? What is the benefit for government to allow this to happen? Who profits from this activity? Who is most put at risk, environmentally, economically and health wise? What is the future of local produce? Mark Meldon Candidate for Fisher Katter’s Australian Party

Stop the litter

Recently articles about littering have appeared in the Glasshouse Country News. I wondered if people are aware it is possible to dob in a litter bug online using the website http://www.ehp.qld.gov.au/waste/ illegal_dumping_litter.html You do have to provide a lot of information - that's because people you dob in can get fined by the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection as a result. If you want to stop littering, this is the best way; I do it all the time. Name supplied Glass House Mountains

Blurring of cultural assets

I was flabbergasted and dismayed at the report of ‘Didge for Kids Show’ in GCNews last week. Not because someone was playing the didgeridoo and not because they may or may not have been indigenous, but because their stated credentials demonstrated and perpetuates an appalling apparent ignorance of the cultures of Australia. To say that you were taught by an ‘Elder of the Gubbi Gubbi’ is like saying that you were taught Spanish bull fighting by a Pakistani Sheep herder. Not only is the didgeridoo not a cultural instrument of the Gubbi Gubbi peoples (it has been used most often without the permission of the cultural owners of the didge) but the Gubbi Gubbi are not even the same race of people as the owners of the didgeridoo. Their only relationship is that they occupied different parts of the same land mass (like the Spaniard and Pakistani). What a pity that instead of highlighting the culture and skills of the Gubbi Gubbi as well as the specific cultural distinguishers of the remaining 250 individual cultures of indigenous peoples, we see a blurring of these important cultural assets by people who either have no idea of the heritage and ownership of these distinctive Aboriginal cultures, or who just don’t care. I believe we need all levels of government and educational institutions to be diligent in ensuring that only local culturally relevant indigenous activities are used in local celebrations and ceremonies, and that when indigenous cultural assets from other regions and peoples are utilised, that full recognition of the cultures and races they belong to are provided as part of the educational development of our appallingly uninformed Australian public. Michael Berris Mooloolah

Bouquet for Caboolture Hospital

Recently my husband had to have his gall bladder removed at the Caboolture Hospital and we would like to thank all the staff and let them know it was a job well done. The nursing care was fantastic, he was attended to by a specialist who was very thorough, from the initial surgery and hospital care right through to after surgery care and the follow up call and appointment to check his progress. Very often hospitals in general get bad press, so it's always nice to be able to say what outstanding service they offer. A heartfelt BIG thank you from a local couple. Name supplied Glass House Mountains

I read in the paper a few days ago that voters needed to have commonsense. Shouldn’t the same apply to politicians? We were told that tariffs had to go so a ‘level playing field’ could be established with our trading partners. Removing tariffs would increase efficiency, and therefore we would not be disadvantaged. Yet our manufacturing industries are disappearing and our farmers are suffering. I believe in tariffs, but only if applied in a prudent manner so as to provide a truly ‘level playing field’. Completely removing tariffs can never provide a ‘level playing field’ when we are competing with countries where workers are poorly paid, where there are little or no health and safety regulations, no industrial relations and environmental laws. How can there be a level playing field when our farmers have regulations and restrictions applied to their produce, when these same regulations and restrictions often do not apply to imports. Virgin olive oil is a prime example. Our precious natural resources, such as natural gas, are sold at ridiculously low cost while we pay high prices. We need to see developed and implemented a coherent energy policy that acts in our best interests. A policy that secures cheap supplies of electricity, transport fuels and piped gas to provide a competitive advantage to Australian industries and farms. We need to have a logical and fair taxation system that favours producers of real wealth (farmers, workers, etc.) through honest labours, that encourages savings and thrift and that discriminates against shallow gambling and cartel-manipulations. We need a taxation system that eliminates all irrational and oppressive taxation, especially that which constrains employment and the development of our nation’s productive powers. One such insane tax is payroll tax which has the effect of punishing an employer for employing a worker. Rod Christensen Candidate for Fisher Rise Up Australia Party (RUAP)

In praise of our Postie

The Peachester Postie is a man of courage, patience, kindness and obvious fitness. Having just travelled to all the accessible mail boxes in the area, I am amazed to realise the onus put upon him. There are many old and beyond repair boxes, many too small to receive more than the smallest letter with openings often at the side or back; others with tops which must be lifted manually. Some are set on high driveways, with drains / channels dug alongside them amongst high grass only a snake would enjoy, too high or too low to be reached from a vehicle. Obviously there no regulations re the placement of boxes, so our very kind ‘Postie’ must have to get out of his van to deliver to many boxes through, hail, rain or shine. I give him full credit for his efforts in keeping communications alive. How nice to receive an old-fashioned letter or parcel, often being brought to your door, without complaint by a tireless gentleman. Mavis Robb Peachester

Come and try little athletics, hockey, softball, cricket, naval cadets, BMX, table tennis and triathlon, the expo is on from 3.00pm to 6.00pm at the Landsborough Sports Complex.

Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival

I’m looking forward to seeing the super strawberries, eating the homemade cakes and enjoying the entertainment and atmosphere at this weekend’s Charity Sports and Spring Carnival. There’s an extensive program of horse sports featuring over 200 events and going by the success of last year it’s going to be a great community day out in Beerwah.

Landscaping at Landsborough

The final landscaping stage of the Landsborough entry upgrade is about to get underway. I’ll be on site next week to confirm the location of six feature Poinciana trees to be planted along Caloundra Street between the car park entry and Steve Irwin Way. It will take a few years but it will be worth the wait when they put on a show of blazing red flowers.

I’m really pleased to be supporting the Glasshouse Country Festival in October with a divisional allocation of $1,500.00 in sponsorship. The funds will help pay for promotion of this exciting event that celebrates and showcases all things 'Glasshouse Country'.

Bankfoot House

If you didn’t catch the starring role of Bankfoot House and Glasshouse Country on Channel 7’s the Great Outdoors on Sunday night, you’ll be pleased to know episodes are available online for 28 days.

I’ll be in Beerwah at the library on Friday, August 23 from 1.00pm to 3.00pm, feel free to drop in and catch up about what’s happening in the community.

Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 Mooloolah Recreation Reserve Master Plan

The Mooloolah Recreation Reserve Master Plan will be presented for adoption at Council’s next Ordinary Meeting. Once the plan receives formal Council approval, implementation of the recommendations and actions in the plan can start. It means we will be able to apply for external funding to help support the implementation and also have actions included on Council’s 10 year capital works program. The plan outlines a long-term vision for the area and identifies what it could look like and how it could function into the future. There’s a number of community groups with an interest in the Reserve who have been involved in the development of the plan, including Mooloolah Pony Club, Mooloolah River Water Watch and Landcare and the Mooloolah Valley Community Association. The Reserve is an important yet relatively under-utilised facility and the plan aims to ensure that sport and recreation and opportunities for the promotion of an active, healthy community is the future focus for the area.

The Bankfoot story goes to school Armed with a broad-axe, a bugle and a kero lamp, Ron Gillinder confidently entered the Year 2 classroom at Glass House Mountains State School. The visit was part of a local history teaching initiative by the Year 2 teachers and was the first time the Friends of Bankfoot House had taken the Bankfoot House story to a primary school. The attentive audience of 75 students listened to Ron talk of the discovery of gold in Gympie in 1867 during a time when Scotsman, William Grigor, was cutting timber in the Mooloolah area. He described life in the diggings – before electricity, television and telephones - and the absence of a road transport system, until the Cobb & Co company started their regular coach service. With an abundance of audience encouragement, Ron blew the bugle which in the late 1800s was the signal by coach drivers to alert the groomsman to prepare for a change of horses at the Bankfoot House staging point. It also let Mrs Mary Grigor know she needed to serve lunch to the coach passengers and driver.

The significance of Bankfoot House in the early development of the Sunshine Coast was appropriately acknowledged when the property was added to the State Heritage Register in 2008.

House maintenance Work will commence shortly on replacing some of the wooden stumps and bearers supporting the old house. The Sunshine Coast Council has arranged for this essential maintenance which will ensure the 135 year old house survives well into the future.

For further information contact Friends of Bankfoot House, phone 5493 0197. Email friends@bankfoothouse.org. Ron Gillinder – President – 0407 760 989, in conjunction with the Sunshine Coast Council.

What to do with pesky lawn clippings?

Contributed by Coochin Creek Bushland Group You have just mowed your couch or buffalo lawn and have a couple of bags of lawn clippings – what can you do with them? There are some simple solutions that avoid littering reserves and roadsides. Why not start a compost heap and let your garden benefit from the results? It’s simple – a couple of old pallets and some bales of hay arranged in a 1m square will make a good container for your compost. Add torn cardboard and paper and other garden debris chopped up, keep wet. It will rot down and provide more space for the next lot of clippings – and there’s no smell. After six months or so you can turn it over and use the compost around your plants or in the veggie garden. Or you can just keep letting it rot down in the same place and adding to the top. You can also put grass clippings in a plastic bin with a lid (this does smell) and cover with water, which rots down in about two to three weeks and can be strained, diluted and poured around your garden plants as a liquid booster. You won’t need to walk across the road and dump those clippings any more. Other ways are to reduce your lawn as much as possible or remove it completely. Replace with low maintenance gravel or brick paths and native plant gardens. You won’t need a mower, fuel, mower repairs, nor will you need to spend on poison for those greedy lawn bugs – and you will save yourself a lot of time and energy! If you can’t be bothered with any of this, just order a green waste bin through the Council – it gets emptied every fortnight. Dumping in the nearby reserve, over the fence or across the road is illegal and allows the spread of couch grass and weeds into the parks and forests where they outpace natives, becoming almost impossible to remove.

CATHOLIC WEEKEND MASSES

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Father Kevin Smith Catholic Church When preparing for any trade, profession or career practical experience is vital. Students for ministry also inevitably face a time of ‘apprenticeship’ in a parish or community. There have been a number of students who have lived with me in the parish while preparing for ministry. Ladu was one such student. He was recently ordained a priest and during the ceremony my mind wandered (hopefully in prayer!) over different aspects of Ladu’s story. Ladu was born in Sudan and at 12 years of age was separated from his family when war commenced and he fled to a Refugee Camp in Uganda. It was 10 years before he was reunited with his mother. During that time, the sprawling refugee camps would become his home, place of education and community of faith. Because Australia has a very generous resettlement policy Ladu after several years of applying to come to Australia was eventually settled here. Ladu’s story enables me to sing ‘for those who’ve come across the sea we’ve boundless plains to share’ with a little more sincerity. However his story also makes more complex for me the heartache of those who arrive by boat and also

seek settlement in Australia. Ladu and many others who suffered in refugee camps in Africa would never be here if they had to get here by boat. If everyone who took the perilous journey by boat received the welcome most of us want to give them then very few from other parts of the world would ever be here with us. So we have the dilemma of Solomon to face together. In the midst of human suffering that we cannot even imagine lines are drawn, decisions must be made and terrible suffering endured. I am not sure how many parents are wondering today if they should get on a boat and try to get to Australia so that their children will have a future. I don’t know how many fine young people are sitting in refugee camps in Africa and the Middle East and who wait to see if another country will welcome them. I believe we should be neither glib nor ashamed of the welcome we have given to many people who have sought asylum. But like others I know this is a very complex issue and hope that it could be treated as such. GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

The magician was furious but couldn't do anything, it was the captain's parrot after all. One day the ship had an accident and sunk. The magician found himself on a piece of wood, in the middle of the ocean, and of course the parrot was by his side. They stared at each other with hate, but did not utter a word. This went on for several days. After a week the parrot finally said, "Okay, I give up. What'd you do with the boat?" B.Green, Glenview

Week beginning 21/08/13

LEO July 23 – August 22 The emphasis this week, under a full Moon in your opposite sign Aquarius, brings a strong desire for action. Because it is in your partnership sector it will reveal or address a big relationship issue for you. It will probably more likely be intellectual than emotional revealing life clearly. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The full Moon in your sector of work and health shows the need for innovative improvements in your daily routine and a new way of looking at detailed work. A sudden burst of new unexpected options have you ready to jump at a good opportunity. A new life window is revealed. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Revolutionary ideas lead you to amazing insights, cutting through differences, and allowing the formation of a new alliance, perhaps with a ‘tech edge’. The full Moon is in the smart Aquarius sign shining on your creativity and joy. Your heart is happy to hear of someone’s love. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 This full Moon week in Aquarius is to you a radical unconventional rattler that may remind you to create a more secure foundation domestically. You may want to act impulsively to find freedom or stimulation in your daily routine. A celestial flash of lightening stimulates.

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 When there is a full Moon like now, in the sign of Aquarius, it can make your travel more difficult, confusing or unreliable. It’s a time that may not be easy to get your best ideas across. The best antidote is just to stay focussed on what is sure and real. A restless rebellion for freedom. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 The full Moon in Aquarius feels like you are on the technical edge of what seems a quick solution to a problem or project. However, check things out carefully before proceeding. This is a week to plan your path to a liberated fresh-option future. You find a clear path forward. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Who cares if there is a strain on relationships under this idealistic full Moon in your sign! If your ideal life seems illusive don’t blame others for what is lacking. Allow partners the freedom to be on their own and be themselves. Radical Jupiter/Uranus energies trigger the unexpected. PISCES February 20 – March 20 This full Moon week brings your ruler Neptune, with an enhanced spiritual message, with the subtle power to illuminate your soul. A sudden thread of bright ideas form an unconventional tapestry of progressive concepts. Your partnership world comes alive with clarity for both.

ARIES March 21 – April 20 The full Moon this week, which is in the sign of Aquarius, brings inspiring influence to bear on your personal life. Groups or friends or any other relationships draw you to gatherings, especially for idealistic causes or reforms. There will be an interest in new forms of technology. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This week may bring ongoing conflicts between either your home or work responsibilities. It is probably better to put your attention to your public life as that can bring professional recognition. This Wednesday, the lucky lightning bolt of Jupiter/Uranus brings success. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 This full Moon week is in a compatible air sign, namely Aquarius, and causes distant vistas and future possibilities to beckon alluringly. Give yourself time and space to sort out your point of view. This is a freedom-loving, adventure-seeking, lunation with sub conscious fantasies. CANCER June 22 – July 22 An Aquarius full Moon urges you to express your individuality in some intimate way. A time for you to rationalise benefits in a cool, emotional way. Jupiter / Uranus will cause a sudden change in luck. You can even get ready to place a bet on a risky long shot. It’s on your monetary axis.

A magician was working on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. The audience would be different each week, so the magician allowed himself to do the same tricks over and over again. There was only one problem - the captain's parrot saw the shows every week and began to understand what the magician did in every trick. Once he understood that, he started shouting in the middle of the show, "look, it's not the same hat!" "Look, he's hiding the flowers under the table!" "Hey, why are all the cards the ace of spades?"
