Hi Everyone Having moved our office to Glass House Mountains last Easter, we are well aware of the limited mobile reception that is a regular occurrence in Coonowrin Road, but over the past months things seem to have gotten so much worse. And we are clearly not alone. We have received numerous phone calls, emails and Facebook messages from people across Beerwah, Landsborough and Glass House Mountains whose reception has been dramatically reduced. You may have noticed many people standing on their footpaths making calls or Heidi from Eclectic Dreams using her iPhone in the middle of the Landsborough Maleny Road. While this may not be safe, it is about the only place it will work. There seems to be a range of reasons provided for why this has happened, but at this stage nobody

seems to know when it will be fixed. But what I really want to know is will Telstra not be charging us for the services that we are not being provided with? It seems amazing that they have no problem communicating with us when they need to get money from us .... but when we are not getting what we are paying for, they decide not to mention it and hope that it doesn’t matter. For the many local business people who rely on their mobile services Telstra needs to know that it does matter – it matters a lot!

Max wins Australian Championships

Everyday banking Home loans Credit cards Personal loans Business accounts and lending

It has been a busy few weeks for 15-year-old downhill mountain biker Max Warshawsky. On February 24 he travelled to Adelaide to compete in the Australian National Championships in the under 17s division. The conditions were extreme with temperatures reaching 40 degrees and the track dry, dusty, rough and rocky. The times were fast but Max laid it all on the line and won by less than a second, with a time of 2:10.94. Max has now won the Australian Championships twice out of the three times he’s raced; he crashed on the final corner last year and finished fourth. He is still only 15 but currently holds the Under 19s Queensland Title as well. The weekend after Adelaide, Max travelled to Awaba near Newcastle, NSW, to race in the final national round of the series. Awaba is known as one of the hardest, gnarliest tracks in Australia. It has what every downhiller loves, with steep high speed sections, technical rough and rocky sections and big jumps. To add to the mix, the weather was the opposite to what it had been in Adelaide, heavy rain turning the track wet and muddy, making it even more challenging than normal. After having an over the bars crash in his seeding run and qualifying second last, Max went for broke and put down a time of 4:23.77 which would end up being almost eight seconds clear of the second placed rider.

Inspired to share the love of dance

Division 1 Candidates Evening

For most little girls born with knock knees and being pigeon toed would have been far too much of a barrier to pursuing their dream of growing up to become a ballet teacher. But from a very early age, Rebecca Strutton knew she loved dance, and started attending ballet classes at four years of age. Turning her dream into a reality was made even more difficult by ballet teachers who saw her physical attributes as being insurmountable barriers to her undertaking formal training. Fortunately for Rebecca she found two special teachers that supported her efforts. They worked with her to develop her skills in the timeframes she needed to successfully undertake the exams required along the way. Rebecca had the determination and commitment to succeed with her training and gaining of qualifications to fulfil her dream. To overcome the physical challenges, Rebecca underwent an enormous amount of physiotherapy and undertook pilates classes which assisted her muscle development to allow her to continue with her ballet. Rebecca or Miss Rebecca as she is known to her students from the Black Swan School of Dance, now operating from Landsborough, is truly inspired by her mission to share the joy she has found from dance with others. “It’s my strong belief that everybody should have the opportunity to fall in love with dance and reach their full potential, whatever it may be,” Rebecca said. “This has driven me to open up my own Dance School.”

Classes cost $10.00 per class and Rebecca teaches CSTD Ballet, Jazz and Tap but also offers a wide variety of classes such as Hip Hop, Contemporary, Neo Classical, Kinderballet Mummy and Me, Pilates and even Adult Classes. All classes are held at the Landsborough School of Arts Hall and if you would like any more information about class times call Rebecca on 0409 673 559.

A candidates evening is currently being organised by local apolitical community organisation Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) to give locals the opportunity to put questions to the candidates of Division 1 in a public forum. The evening is to be held on Thursday, April 12 at the Glass House Mountains Hall, in Coonowrin Road, commencing strictly at 6.30pm. GMAN President, Cliff Schnick said to make sure that each of the five candidates are given the same opportunity to share their responses, the evening will follow a highly structured format so that it runs smoothly. “The evening will feature both a list of preprepared questions as well as questions from the floor,” Cliff said. The idea of the pre-prepared questions is that people are encouraged to submit their questions either by dropping them into the GCNews office or into the box at the Beerwah Library or emailing them through to GCNews where the organising committee will collate them to reflect the main concerns and issues of local voters. “The evening will be a great opportunity to see and hear from the candidates as individuals but it will also be interesting to see how they perform under pressure,” Cliff said.

Sunshine Coast Council Division 1 Candidate

True CommitmentWorking for You 2012 — Australian Year of the Farmer

Farming Australia wide is a 405 million dollar industry amounting to 27% of Australia‛s GDP and is undisputedly one of our core business sectors here in Division 1. Having lived and worked here for 26 years, I think I can say most of our businesses and community for that matter rely on this sector in one way or another. I am not going to claim I know a lot about being a farmer or if the farmers currently participating in council initiatives like ‘Seasons of the Sun‛ think it is working; but on face value it is obvious there is an abundance of clean, fresh produce being grown and produced here in what is undoubtedly one of the most iconic spots in South East Queensland. Come April 28 our new council has a responsibility to provide the same level of support to this industry as it does to others.

Career change for Koschels

These days it is fairly common practice for people to have a number of career changes in their lives. Well Allan and Robyn Koschel from Glass House Mountains have discovered just how exciting and rewarding that can be. They recently purchased the Glass House Mountains News Agency which means a complete change for Robyn who had been working in the aged care industry for the past seven years. For Allan it is only a part-time change as he will still be running his plumbing business, but will be behind the counter until 9.00am on weekdays. The opportunity for them to work together was one of the reasons they decided to buy the business, however they won’t be doing it alone. They will have Annette McCaig working with them part-time and Marg Coulsen working on a Thursday and Friday afternoon. One thing Robyn says she’s enjoying is the one-on-one contact with the customers. “Locals are really happy to give us plenty of feedback and suggestions, so we have been listening and taking their ideas on board. “While we don’t plan to make any dramatic changes, we are keen to ensure that we have the right product mix for our clients and where we haven’t got what they want in stock, we will make sure we do special orders,” Robyn said. Robyn is also keen to set up a ‘Gold Club’ for non-winning lotto entries, so they can go into a draw for a regular prize. “However one thing we didn’t want to make any changes to was our newspaper delivery, we didn’t want to take on the tasks of rolling and delivering newspapers in the early hours of the morning, so we have kept on the delivery staff which has meant no disruption for customers,” Allan added. The couple are also keen to thank all customers for their patience over the past couple of weeks as they have settled into their new roles. The store hours will stay the same, however they are making a minor adjustment to the hours of the Bendigo Bank Agency, it will now operate from 9.00am – 3.00pm Monday to Friday. If you haven’t caught up with Allan and Robyn, drop in and see them and check out how well they are Marg, Annette, Robyn and Allan coping with their career change.

At Landsborough Driver Training we promote a calm and polite driving style We are here to make the process of getting your P-plates as structured and easy as possible. Here are a few things to remember: 1. A solid road rules knowledge is essential. http://tmr.qld.gov.au/Safety/Queensland-Road Rules/Road-rules-refresher.aspx 2. Once you pass your learners test it is advisable to have your first lesson with an accredited driver trainer. We can then give the student a better idea as to how many lessons will be required to get them on the road confidently. The main focus is on techniques such as clutch control, steering techniques, cornering, gears, and road positioning etc. 3. Do at least one lesson once a month after that to refresh your skills and to update them. Please keep in mind that the first 10 hours with an accredited Driver Trainer counts 30 hours towards your logbook hours. This includes night time hours. You can contact Ken or Susanne Steyn @ Landsborough Driver Training

by email drive@ldt.net.au (preferred contact as we cannot answer the phone during lessons); website LDT.net.au (booking a lesson online is easy), or phone 0427 997 233.

Tips of the week

1. Driving in wet weather. Slow down and double your following distance to four seconds. If you are not sure how to calculate the time lapse method, the link below is useful: http://tmr.qld.gov.au/Safety/Queensland Road-Rules/Road-rules-refresher/Safe following-distances.aspx 2. When do I need to indicate right when entering a roundabout? When taking a right turn (third exit) or doing a u-turn only. In all instances we indicate left when leaving a roundabout.

MARCH 21 2012

A good crowd attended the Glasshouse Mountains Musos Club at the Sports Club on Thursday, March 8. We enjoyed a magical performance from newcomer Michael Rhoddy, who sat on a low stool - almost at floor level and sang while playing a nylon string guitar. His guitar, lightly plucked, at times suggested a harp and his voice, a light baritone with a classical quality, intoned sweetly. His three original songs were listened to so intently that Australia’s cricket victory in the background became a nuisance and was relegated to silence. There was a hypnotic, prayer-like quality in his performance that I found quite mesmerising. Michael will be certainly welcomed back again as one of our regulars. Ian Williams once again appeared with a set of new songs, and continues to astonish, not only for the quality of his work, but also for always knowing his lyrics. He is a truly committed artist. This time his set included an impressive, full sounding version of Bob Dylan’s 'Shelter from the storm', a Duane Allman instrumental and a couple of originals which were reminiscent to me of the Beatles in their Indian period. Other regulars included Mick Shipley, Doug Pullen, Ralph King and Mick Od, and of course Paul Fagan and yours truly of Revelators fame. A fun element included first appearances from scratch bands the Gap Fillers and the Space Between who backed Mick Od. Thank you to all our performers and audience members - many of whom come back each month. The Musos Club is held on the second Thursday of the month at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club. From the next meeting we will begin to have a prize for an artist or two each night. Hopefully that might encourage even more new performers at our sessions, the next of which will be held on April 12. 20th Anniversary of Beerwah NHWQ Contributed by Sheila Williams

Recently 22 friends and supporters gathered at the Beerwah RSL to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the foundation of Beerwah NHWQ. Unfortunately, members of the original committee were unable to be present, but we were lucky enough to have the company of Brian Chapman and his wife Noela, and Graeme Cheal and his wife Jan. Brian was the police sergeant at Landsborough 20 years ago, and it was at his house that the first meeting to discuss the possibility of setting up a Beerwah NHW was discussed (on March 5, Noela's birthday!). Graeme Cheal was the first convener. On March 10, Beerwah NHW was officially approved, and the first formal meeting took place on March 17. After a very pleasant lunch, we heard from Brian and Graeme who spoke about those early days.

Robert Thompson is a member of Glasshouse Country Toastmasters and is from Landsborough. Robert competed in our in Club Competition for International Speech Contest, which he won. Robert then represented Glasshouse Country Toastmasters in our area against six other Clubs which again he won. This allowed Robert to compete in Central Division against six areas which again he won. He will now compete in the District Competition which will include Queensland, Northern Territory, Northern New South Wales and Papua New Guinea in May at Brisbane. Let's all wish Robert well and hope he will win which will give him the opportunity to represent Australia in the Toastmasters International Speech Contest.

Glass House candidates Andrew Powell - Glass House As the LNP Member for Glass House I am proud to serve you all in the Queensland Parliament and I am confident that I have campaigned for the best interests of our community and worked hard to get good results for our great electorate. Cost of living, infrastructure and front line services are the big issues for Glass House. Locals are hurting with recent increases in electricity, water, rego, fuel and public transport fares. This is why the LNP has put forward a range of policies designed to save the average family $330.00 a year and even more if you buy a family home as the LNP will re-introduce stamp duty concessions, saving families around $7,000. When it comes to infrastructure, the key issues relate to health, public transport and roads. Our growing region needs the Sunshine Coast University Hospital – a project the LNP is committed to delivering. I am also fighting for the duplication of the North Coast rail through to Landsborough and then onto Nambour. Local commuters know only too well the need for better services, including more practical timetables, fare structures and facilities both on and off the train. And we need investment in our roads – especially the D’Aguilar Highway, Bruce Highway, Steve Irwin Way and MalenyKenilworth Road. Finally, locals are looking for better front line services, not more bureaucrats in Brisbane. The LNP has already announced policies to boost the number of police, and teacher aides for Prep classes and is committed to improving access for local residents to health services. 12 |

Caloundra candidates

Allan McKay - Caloundra

Whilst there have been some important changes and improvements for Caloundra, I believe there is much more to be done. My Key issues in the electorate are: Environment - The Labor Bligh Government has led an agenda of extraordinary reform in the area of environment protection and sustainability, Labor has a clear vision for the ecological protection. Jobs and Training - Housing industry is a major employer in Queensland: a boost is aimed at stimulating that market and creating more Queensland building jobs. Build on existing and encourage new industries to the Coast. ‘What’s Your Big Idea?’ Program. This program has already seen grants of up to $50,000 to 53 local businesses, supporting the development of new and innovative products developed right here in Queensland. A re-elected Labor Government will see this grant capacity double to up to $100,000, and become a permanent innovation program within the Queensland budget. Health - The ALP Bligh government is in the process of delivering a world class $2 billion public hospital and a $60 million medical training and research centre boost for the Coast. Mark McArdle, Campbell Newman NLP’s public statement the cutting of $400 million worth of funding from the Sunshine Coast University Hospital will jeopardise the quality of patient care, jobs, and the training of new doctors and nurses. Roads and Rail - Streamline the public bus services and keep the planning going with light rail. Caloundra Aerodrome - The Caloundra aerodrome, I see as an important development and growth in our community.

Greens Candidate for Caloundra All Greens policy is based around four guiding principles: a fair go for all; looking after where we live and work for long-term positive outcomes; people power in local communities; and resolving issues without conflict. All policy is presented under headings of Principles, Goals, and Measures. The result is a fully integrated and complimentary set of policy statements, freely open to view on the Qld Greens website at http://qld.greens.org.au/. Statewide priorities for this election include honesty and integrity in politics; protecting our land, farms and water from inappropriate development; creating a diverse economy; providing fairer health access; protecting our reef and coasts. Reversing the degradation of Pumicestone Passage is a local priority, part of an integrated SE Queensland waterways and catchments restoration plan. State and local government co-operation will be fostered to deliver an integrated transport solution to provide the network needed to support healthy and vibrant communities. Changing legislation is an urgent task to ensure all mining, infrastructure and other major development, including that controlled by the Urban Land Development Authority, is subject to Queensland’s normal planning, environmental and other laws. Changing the focus on health policy in response to evidence that a third of the current burden on our health system is due to preventable causes will ensure long-term viability of our health system. The Greens have an integrated preventative health policy. When you vote 1 Greens on Saturday, and number other boxes as you wish, your vote will count in one other way – you will be voting for your grandchildren’s future. Tomorrow Needs Your Vote Today.

Stewart Luke - Glass House

Peter Harris - Glass House

Greens Candidate for the electorate of Glass House Key issues in Glass House would be cost of living, community health and well-being, and environmental health. This includes making sure we getter better and affordable public transport, health care facilities and overseeing all of this, more accountability and responsibility from all levels of government. In considering Greens policies in relation to these issues, the most important thing to remember is that The Greens will address current problems in order to find immediate solutions whilst always maintaining a longer-term perspective. It is this strategy to create long-term benefits that separates The Greens from other parties, who seem to want to only look at short term strategies, which inevitably create bigger problems down the track. Of particular concern is the ALP and LNP's determination to pursue coal seam gas exploration and mining, and there are rumours currently circulating that CSG exploration licenses have been applied for on the Sunshine Coast. We need to remember that this industry is destroying good agricultural land, poisoning water and devastating the Great Barrier Reef and other unique environments, all in the name of a quick buck and a dead-end answer to long-term energy solutions. As a Greens MP, I will work with individuals, communities, councils and with other elected representatives in parliament to bring needed resources and solutions to our area. All Greens policies are available to see at www.qld.greens. org.au As individuals and as communities, we need to work to create the right environment for us all to learn about our place in the world, how we can benefit each other and our natural environment, and then make sure we all find the right tools and resources to work together to make our society a better place to live.

The three pivotal issues in the Glass House electorate are 1. Coal Seam Gas drilling We have already had one disaster in mining in this electorate with the Agricola Gold Mine near Conondale. In 1989, the mine operator Astrik Resources went bankrupt after six cyanide containers fell and two broke near Kilcoy. The area had to be cleaned up at public expense and it is still showing signs of acidity. With coal seam gas drilling, disasters can be far harder to treat being deep underground in prime agricultural land. The agricultural land is also being polluted from the extracted salt and the chemicals rising from below. 2. Support for small business Most of the electorate is small business. Every B & B, every resort, every farm, shop, every independent service station, every small shop, every franchisee, every builder, every independent contractor is a small business. These small businesses need to bargain collectively in a similar way to the unions. As a starter, we will increase the threshold for payroll tax to $2 million. We need to support the tourism industry throughout the electorate (e.g. by supporting international flights to Maroochydore Airport). 3. Destruction of our farming industries by free trade agreements The Glass House electorate includes many farming areas which are being decimated by unfair competition from countries protected by so called free trade agreements. For example farmers growing pineapples and other fruit have to compete with growers in Thailand and Philippines typically paying $A7 a day not $A16 - $A21 per hour required here in the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

Christine Anthony - Caloundra

www.gcnews.com.au

Mark McArdle MP - Caloundra LNP Member for Caloundra, Shadow Health Minister Beerwah, Landsborough, Mooloolah Valley and Glenview are all key townships in my electorate. Residents deserve an LNP Government to represent them and wipe away years of neglect from Labor. Key priorities include: • Keeping the Caloundra Emergency Department open, which Labor plans to shut down after spending $11.5 million. • Building the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, which Labor has delayed multiple times and even former Labor Premier Peter Beattie recently admitted that shouldn’t have happened. • Fighting for better parking at Landsborough Railway station. The LNP will also slash Labor's scheduled 15 per cent fare hikes by half, and reward regular commuters. • Ensuring roads are safe to drive on and the Bruce Highway draft planning study meets resident’s access needs. • Protecting the Pumicestone Passage during construction of Caloundra South. It is also critical that businesses, townships and a focus on tourism in the hinterland are not forgotten when Caloundra South is established. • Reducing Labor’s high record of unemployment. The LNP will work every day to reduce unemployment across the State to four per cent in six years. • Helping small businesses survive. The LNP will expand the payroll tax exemption threshold and also cut red tape and regulation. • Reducing cost of living pressures inflicted by Labor. The LNP will cut the cost of living for families by up to $330.00 a year through electricity and water reforms and freezing car registration fees. The LNP will also scrap Labor’s $7,000 stamp duty slug on the family home.

Ryan Moore - Glass House The two issues I've heard most about around the electorate, not just as a candidate, but as a lifelong local, are public services and the cost of living. I'm pleased to be the only candidate in Glass House with a comprehensive plan from education, from early learning right through to skills and further education. Schools will benefit from big investments in infrastructure, a curriculum that focuses on getting basics right and ensuring kids have every opportunity after leaving school with $4,000 incentive to those pursuing further education after school. This will support many locals who need to travel to Brisbane to study. Labor is committed to building the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. We've already seen a lot of progress and the hospital is set to open in the next few years. Labor and I are the only major party who will deliver the hospital on time with full funding. On transport, Labor has delivered Qconnect buses and the Caboolture-Beerburrum duplication. I will deliver extra seats and services on the Sunshine Coast line, and if elected, I'll work with whoever is in Government and lobby relentlessly to speed up the rail duplication from Beerburrum to Nambour. I have already obtained $2 million in funding to improve our local roads and making them safer, specifically the D'Aguilar Highway, Bruce Highway, and Maleny-Landsborough Road. I am the only candidate who will freeze rego costs for all cars to ease the cost of living, along with a new electricity pricing system in effect next year to cut costs for local families. This election, vote for a full-time local with real vision, courage and a strong plan for Glasshouse. www.gcnews.com.au

Hide and Seek If you want to see these little creatures in the bush you must look carefully as they are masters at blending in with their environment and can be difficult to spot. Although they may look like owls, the Tawny Frogmouth, P. strigoides (meaning owl like) is more closely related to the nightjar family of birds. Rather than hunt actively, the frogmouths sit and wait for their insect prey to come to them, only occasionally swooping to catch a feed with their beaks, whereas owls, fly around and use their strong claws to grab prey. This picture shows two well camouflaged frogmouths in a tree. It was taken by Wendy Fasso using a Samsung S 1060 in Auto mode giving 1/460 at f4.3.

‘Friends Selection: the Ken Hinds’ Collection is showcasing at Caloundra Regional Gallery until April 22. Members of the Friends of the Regional Gallery Caloundra Inc were given the unique opportunity to make a selection from Ken’s large collection of art, toys and objects. Council’s Cultural and Heritage Collections Manager John Waldron said it was Ken's vision that the collection be displayed publicly on the Sunshine Coast and this exhibition serves to promote its diversity and value. Avid art enthusiasts are also invited to join Kevin Oxley, past Development Director of Arts Park Australia, in a discussion about this eclectic collection over a coffee on March 29 at 10.30am. Bookings essential, phone 5420 8299. Children are also encouraged to visit the gallery to do the ‘Super Snooper Activity Trail.’ They can learn about the works from the collection that includes an assortment of old fashioned toys from an English-made ball of the 1800’s, tin toys from the 1920s and 30s through to handmade pre-war toys from the 1940s. Caloundra Regional Gallery is free and open to the public, Wednesday to Sunday, 10.00am to 4.00pm. A Separation - a film by Iranian film maker, Asghar Farhadi, is being shown at Buddies’ Film and Finger-Food Fundraiser on Friday, March 30 at Nambour Civic Centre, 6.00pm. The film won the Academy Award for best foreign language film. Twenty five unaccompanied teenaged refugee boys attending Milpera High School in Brisbane would love to play competition soccer this season but need $300.00 each for registration. Rather confusing

The letter of J.T. Weeks last week was confusing. Mr Carr’s appointment to the Senate followed the lines set down for the replacement of a senator, whether the vacancy occurs because of death or resignation. The reference to ex-Senator Arbib’s electorate is puzzling. Senators are elected by the whole State or Territory, not by separate electorates. Neil Lovett Glass House Mountains

Neighbourhood centre for Beerwah

Absolutely appalled

Last Tuesday I was in a pizza shop in Beerwah and I couldn’t believe it - there was a young man laying on the floor obviously having some sort of seizure. What really surprised me that it was only myself and another customer who helped him with no assistance from the staff. They were too busy still taking orders and money for pizzas and when I let myself in to get a couple of pizza boxes to crush and make the lad more comfortable, I was abused. What has happened that people will not help because they automatically think that a young person on the floor is self induced? He was only in Beerwah but just one person was helping and a lot of you were standing around watching. I'm surprised I didn't see any mobile phones. Jasen Glass House Mountains

Use it or lose it

We recently needed quartz batteries replaced in both our watches. On our weekly visit to Beerwah we popped them in to the jewellery shop while we did some grocery shopping. They were all done when we returned including a bit of a clean-up on one that had collected a bit of gunk. The cost was $12.00 each. I said to my wife they were only $10.00 last year or so. But prices do go up dear, she said. A couple of weeks later we discovered another watch which had an expired battery. But on this occasion we were visiting Target at Maroochydore. So I thought while ‘her indoors’ is shopping I'll get the watch battery replaced at the Minute Bar. Well it took about 30 seconds for the replacement and for me to part with $18.95. Yep that's right $18.95, almost $7.00 more than at Beerwah. The moral of this story is *shop locally*. Quite often the

I am currently involved with one of the Council’s focus groups that is looking into PLACE+ Beerwah. Our focus group is looking into ‘social cohesion’. We would love to have a neighbourhood centre and meeting place in Beerwah, but have already been told there won’t be the funds for this. Meanwhile Council has purchased the house block next to the Turner Park entrance under a policy to increase open space. This block enables the broadening of the entrance area and will create a more inviting entrance to Turner Park. This house block has a building on it, so guess what we thought? Yes, of course: Here is a building we could use, at least for a few years until the community might manage to fund something else. It is actually very well positioned, so that it doesn’t block the view into the park from the entrance point. We can open up the park AND have a neighbourhood centre/meeting place. NO WE CANNOT. The land purchase was for ‘open space’, and the only way to change the decision is for it to be changed at a Council meeting. Neither council staff nor Anna Grosscreutz want to initiate this. For the sake of giving a balanced view, I must reveal that the building has some asbestos in it (hence the delay in demolition. However, this has to be removed whatever becomes of the building. It is probably also true that it is not the ideal building, but it would be a start. Is there enough demand for a neighbourhood centre for people to stand in the way of the bulldozers? If you are interested, have your say on the Beerwah facebook page. Signs of a groundswell might cause Anna to reconsider. Frances Harper Peachester

Ron Jones 0400 911 008

I have noticed my Telstra phone reception is not as good lately. Texts are not sending the first time and it breaks up easily as I only get one bar, or no bars at times. Rod Jobe, Beerwah We are just on the Landsborough side of Australia zoo and have had problems with our signal strength for the last few weeks too. As I have typed this email my signal went from nothing to full!! We have always had an excellent signal until recently. Ann Goodrich, Beerwah I live on the east side of Steve Irwin Way in Landsborough and we have been having problems with our mobile phone coverage but also with wireless Internet access with Bigpond. I have been through the usual channels, being given reference numbers, case managers and at least I have had calls from Telstra asking the exact nature of the problem. In desperation I have been to the ombudsman requesting help, to be told that if I haven't heard anything in 10 days to contact them again. At least I was given a contact name and reference number. Within 24 hours I began getting these calls from Telstra. I still have problems, having to travel to Beerwah or Nambour (to contact Centrelink) to get coverage and to retrieve emails. A great number of neighbours are also experiencing the same problems. I tried to ring from the two public phones in Landsborough, both were out of action. This is to let people know that these problems have been going on for some three to four weeks. It is becoming a health hazard as I have a mother and mother-in-law who are both very ill and I can get no calls from or about them. With any luck, more people will write in and we can get some action. Another disgruntled phone user, Landsborough Reception for all mobiles used at this address (no matter which carrier), is bad. Often the call will simply drop out. Conversations with Telstra staff at the Telstra Shop provided no solution, other than to steer me in the direction of a ‘blue tick’ phone. A non blue tick phone e.g. an iPhone, has no reception. This situation requires me to keep my house phone in use, which is costly when I need to call mobile numbers which are covered by my mobile plan, but expensive on this phone. Getting the message through to anyone that cares in Telstra is impossible. Naturally, changing carriers is not the answer. Our only hope as consumers is a collective demand. I commend you for your initiative. Let’s hope that deep in the heart of Telstra there is a tiny glow of compassion! Barry Pietsch, Glass House Mountains

My advice

In response to ‘Unhappy Customer’ in GCNews Wednesday, March 14 regarding Telstra`s poor mobile coverage I would like to add the following. ‘Unhappy Customer’ advises people to call Telstra`s 13 number to complain, however I find that both costly and fairly useless really. Everyone would be better off calling Telstra on 1800 816 025 and make their complaint direct to their customer complaints section and they can also log a complaint online at http://www.telstra. com.au/mobile-phones/coverage-networks/coveragefeedback/ I also urge fellow ‘Unhappy Customers’ to lodge a complaint with the TIO (Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman ) online at https://www.tio. com.au/making-a-complaint/submit-a-complaint Having received credits on my account for over $1,000 I am confident others can do this too and then Telstra might do something to give their loyal customers a reliable cellular service. HOW TO SAVE A DEPOST FOR YOUR FIRST HOME Smartline Personal Mortgage Adviser, Teresa Harrison, provides her tips on how to save a deposit for your first home. The best ways to save for a deposit fast will vary widely depending on your specific circumstances. A key for many people is personal budgeting. To save for a deposit quickly, many people find the most effective thing is to work out a personal or household budget, which includes nominating a set amount for savings each week or fortnight. www.gcnews.com.au

The secret to budgeting is to be honest with yourself. Do not set unrealistic limits or else you will blow your budget every week. If you blow your budget, don’t lose heart. Take a deep breath, set a new budget, and start again. Other creative ways to save for a deposit will depend on your individual circumstances but you might consider the following. • Stop paying rent and move in with parents or family for a year. • Open a savings account where you cannot access

the funds using ATMs or EFTPOS. This can help reduce impulse spending of your hard earned savings. • Set up an automatic transfer on your pay day into your savings account so you do not even see your savings and are therefore not tempted to spend them. If you are a dual-income household and are lucky enough to be able to do it, use one wage for living expenses, and the other for your savings. Little things can also make a big difference. If you buy your lunch every day, try

taking it from home or if you enjoy eating out at restaurants once a week, try cutting it back to once a fortnight. The difference to your savings over a year can be much more than you may think. Get help from the start. Teresa Harrison’s professional help will make the process easier. She can discuss a range of strategies and tell you exactly how much deposit you need to get into your first home.

It doesn’t get better than this – living amongst the magnificent Glasshouse Mountains and the convenience of an edge of town location, set against the backdrop of Mt Ngun Ngun and national park. Very, very special. Simple covenants protect your investment, while allowing a large detached shed; and sensible fencing. Glasshouse Country Bromeliad Society Inc. Contributed by Bob McLean Phone: 0427 606 240 This time we will have a look at the bromeliad Billbergia genus. The billbergia was named after Gustave Billbergia, a Swedish botanist. Billbergias are native to eastern Brazil, Mexico and Central America in the main, but have been found in Peru and Argentina. There are over 50 recognised species, and several 100 registered hybrids. Billbergias are naturally epiphytic, but will happily grow in the ground and will quickly develop in to large clumps within a few years. They are often a common sight in shady corners in many older sub-tropical/ tropical gardens. Many billbergias though, will grow best under much more light. They also need to be ‘starved’ of nutrient if you wish to bring out the best colour in the coloured-leaved billbergias (if you fertilise billbergias as you would with other bromeliads, then their leaves will become ‘lanky’ and green). Billbergias often have beautiful, but short-lived (seven to 14 days) inflorescences. Consequently, many people concentrate on growing the coloured-leaved billbergias. The Billbergia amoena ‘Red form’ (pictured) is a fairly large and attractive billbergia with pink and spotted cream leaves when grown in good light. The upright flower spikes have vivid pink bracts and green flowers with bright blue tips. It is very prolific and can cover larger areas quickly via its underground stolons. When grown in a pot it will soon outgrow the pot with the fine roots attaching to the outside of the pot to support the new growth, as would occur when growing in a tree.

The Billbergia amoena ‘Red’ has glorious glossy red leaves. The new pups arise from relatively long stolons and often grow much higher than the parent plant. This unusual characteristic means it can grow as a climber. The flower spikes are pendulous, sometimes hanging below the base of the plant and are usually very glamorous. You will be able to see more beautiful bromeliads at the 2012 Sustainability & Garden Expo on May 27. The next meeting of the Society will be held at James Drake 99 Dixon Avenue, Maleny on April 1 at 2.00 pm. Please bring your own cup for afternoon tea and a chair, everything else will be provided. N.B. This property is a Smoke Free Zone. For more information contact: Margaret McLean (Secretary) on 5496 9601.

Native Finger Lime Citrus australasica When it comes to bush tucker, the Finger Lime is king. The stunning finger shaped fruits which turn a purple/pink or green when ripe, contain pulp that when eaten explode with a delightful lime taste in your mouth. This plant is very sought after and is regarded as a delicacy in dining restaurants. The Finger Lime can be grown as a fruit tree in the ground, is long lived in a pot or can be included in a mixed rainforest planting. It grows approximately 4 to 6m and prefers a full sun to semi shaded position with good drainage. It also produces a lovely fragrant white flower and its dense spiky foliage provides shelter for small native birds. It is quite slow if grown from seed, but grafted varieties such as ‘Rainforest Pearl’ fruit within 12 months. We currently have grafted Finger Limes in stock so if you are interested, get in quick! If you would like more information on this tree or any other native plants drop in and see Simon or Melissa at Go Green Rainforest Nursery, 2620 Steve Irwin Way, Glenview. Phone 5494 5980. Do you remember when they played Steve Irwin tributes on TV back in 2006; all the celebrities and friends of Steve commented on how real he was? They talked about how he was the same in private as he was in the public eye. Why was that such a big deal for people? When it comes to our opinion of others, something that always seems to come up is deciding whether someone is ‘fair dinkum’ or not. I believe that we often make judgments as to whether someone is the real deal or a bit of a fake. The word that comes to mind with all this is ‘integrity’. Collins Australian Dictionary defines

Faced with a drinking problem?

integrity as ‘honesty, soundness, wholeness’. The bible often talks about the importance and benefits of living with integrity. Proverbs 10:9 says ‘Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but whoever takes crooked paths will be found out.’ I think integrity is applicable for all areas of our lives: in our relationships, how we work, the way we deal with our finances, doing our taxes, selling a car or a house, or running a business. Colossians 3:22 talks about integrity in the workplace… ‘Slaves, you must always obey your earthly masters. Try to please them at all times, and not just when you think they are watching. Honor the Lord and serve your masters with your whole heart.’ We all know the disappointment and hurt that is caused when someone turns out to be a liar or a fake; yet we trust those who prove themselves to be faithful and true through life’s ups and downs. Glasshouse Mountains Touch

SPORTS MaSSage

Contributed by Dan Cork

Glasshouse Mountains Touch Grand Final night was held last Saturday, March 17. Despite the need for flippers in the ‘trying’ conditions, the event was very well attended with some exciting wet weather touch on display. Congratulations to all the teams that made it to the finals, all games were very close with only a couple of points separating each team on the night. The evening began at 6.30pm with ‘B’ and ‘C’ Grade teams taking the fields. The ‘C’ grade final was played between ‘Just Fake It’ and ‘The Bush Pigs’ with the Bush Pigs victorious in a tight game winning five points to four. Female and Male Best and Fairest for ‘C’ grade this season was Sam Orchard and Nathan Adams. The ‘B’ Grade final was also a very close game between the Antz and Willgur. In the pouring rain, ball handling was the key with Willgur unlucky not to force a ‘drop off’ coming runner up to the Antz four points to three. Best and Fairest for the ‘B’ grade competition were Elena Parkyn and Jarrad Doonan. In the interval before the ‘A Grade final the club ran the inaugural ‘Sprint King and Queen’ event where the fastest players in the competition faced off in a 60m race. Sprint Queen Race was extremely close calling for photo finish technology next season, with Alicia Evans taking out the

event and Jack Hooper the Sprint King in a much clearer result. Again the ‘A’ Grade final was tight but with only five players the ‘Dragon Slayers’ were unable to hold out ‘Tradies and Ladies’ eight points to five. These two teams have had a very close rivalry all season and it was a great display of touch football to finish the season. Best and Fairest for ‘A’ Grade were Mellissa Evans and Anthony Palmer. Both these teams will be travelling to Witta next Friday night to contest the winners and runners up of the Maleny-Witta competitions in the Hinterland Challenge and Hinterland Cup to decide the best team between the two competitions. The games start at 6.30pm so make the effort to come up in what will be a great night of touch football.

Bowls Super Challenge competition has now ended. Glasshouse Gliders team had the following results. On Saturday, March 10 Division 7 played Palmwoods and the men won three games to two, the ladies won one game each. Glasshouse ladies won overall on points. On Sunday, March 11, Division 10 men played Indooroopilly and lost five games to nil. Saturday, March 17 was a make-up game for Division 7 from one previously rained out. Some of this days games were played in heavy rain, but a result was required. They played Sandgate with the men winning three games to two, the ladies winning one game each. Again Glasshouse ladies won overall on points. This puts the Glasshouse Gliders Ladies third in their Division and now go to the Gold Coast to playoff in the finals. A great result obtained by the ladies for our little club. Wednesday was Ladies Jackpot day and was disappointingly rained out. Thursday Open Pairs started ok but was finished early by more rain. The results played in the AM were Ernie Sherwood and Clive Sinton winners with 24 points and the runners up were Bob Bloomer and Ron Wilson on 16 points.

The hook A pirate walked into a bar and the bartender said, "hey, I haven't seen you in awhile. What happened? You look terrible." "What do you mean?" asked the pirate. "I feel fine." "What about the wooden leg? You didn't have that before." "Well, we were in a battle and I got hit with a cannon ball, but I'm fine now." "Well ok, but what about that hook? What happened to your hand?" "We were in another battle. I boarded a ship and

got into a sword fight. My hand was cut off. I got fitted with a hook. I'm fine, really." "What about that eye patch?" "Oh, one day we were at sea and a flock of birds flew over. I looked up and one of them pooped in my eye." "You're kidding," said the bartender, "you couldn't lose an eye just from some bird poo?" "It was my first day with the hook." D. Teirney, Beerwah
