Landsborough puppy facility makes international waves The public submission phase for a new Landsborough-based dog breeding and boarding kennel facility development application has been completed, with Sunshine Coast Council staff now assessing the application.

Along with facilities for 60 breeding dogs, the plans are to build 100 boarding kennels (housing up to 200 dogs at any one time) and space for a cattery with an unspecified capacity.

The proposed development is located between the end of Amigh Road and Steve Irwin Way (adjacent to the Big Kart Track).

There were 221 separate public submissions received, which in itself isn’t an unusually large number for what many have viewed as a contentious proposal.

However, what is unusual is that two of these submissions represent almost 25,000 people who oppose the development.

A petition was tabled as one submission with 1,746 signatures strongly voicing opposition to the proposed kennel development. This petition was organised by locals volunteering their time and without a sophisticated marketing campaign. It included 1,111 local residents signing against the kennels being approved.

A second, much larger submission was made by the animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), which included a petition of more than 15,000 signatures against the proposal as well as more than 7,700 people who emailed the council via a PETA campaign website to strongly protest

against the dog breeding facility.

The PETA campaign captured enormous domestic and international attention, resulting in the actual submission document running to 1,041 pages of names and details of people objecting.

Of the remaining individual submissions, the overwhelming majority called on the council to refuse the application.

However, the development wasn’t without its supporters, with some saying that the development will benefit the area and create jobs.

The proponents, Diamond Valley Kennels, have an established dog breeding facility at Mooloolah and want to relocate and expand to the new site.

Since being announced in 2018, the dog breeding facility has caused a storm of controversy and protest, with a Facebook page (No Puppy Farms in Queensland) created, two petitions generated, an online email campaign and specific questions being asked of all candidates prior to the recent local government elections.

The dog breeding facility was originally planned to house 100 breeding females but has been scaled back to a total of 60 breeders.

The next phase of the application process involves the council evaluating the submissions and assessing the application against the planning scheme.

Due to the number of public submissions, the council has extended its timeframe to August 6.

New Beerwah development Landsborough’s newest work of art A large aged care and retirement living facility is proposed for the eastern side of the railway in Beerwah in response to identified high levels of need for additional aged care beds in the region.

The 25 independent living units and 93-bed high-care residential facility is to be located on two adjoining blocks bounded by Beerwah Parade, Phipps Street and Free Street.

The more than 4,000m2 site currently has two residential dwellings but is zoned for high density residential living.

A material change of use application was submitted on behalf of a newly created company Pesdev No 5 Pty Ltd to Sunshine Coast Council last week, with an application to reconfigure the boundaries of the two lots and an application for an operational works permit.

Pesdev Group is a privately-owned Brisbane-based property development company with a history of residential and aged care developments.

According to the submitted planning reports, the proposal is for two four-storey buildings – one housing the independent retirement living units and the other the 93-bed care facility. Parking will be provided in a basement level.

The independent retirement living building is to be located on the Beerwah Parade end and includes plans for a 100m2 retail “corner store” space.

The larger aged-care building will take up the back two-thirds of the site, with the vehicle access off Free Street.

The proposal fits within the current land zoning (high density residential) and so is deemed to be code assessable, meaning that no advertising or public submission process is required.

Although the adjoining commercial property has a mixture of commercial and manufacturing, the planning report suggests that there will be no noise or visual implications. The planning report also suggests that the resulting increased traffic flow will be minimal and within the road network capacity.

Although the proposal is broadly within the planning scheme guidelines, the details show that the plans don’t meet the setback requirements from the Free Street frontage. The site is also more densely built than allowable (49% coverage compared to the allowed 40% coverage).

Despite the site being well located for access to public transport, being opposite the Beerwah train station and bus interchange, the connection to the commercial and retail centre of Beerwah is challenging due to the separation caused by the railway corridor.

Recently GC&M News was contacted by Landsborough local Margaret Johnson to make sure we had seen the dramatic work that was underway on the new mural in Cribb Street at Landsborough.

While we knew work was underway on the giant wall art, which is part of Council’s ‘Placemaking’ upgrade to the town, we didn’t know the story behind it and were keen to see the completed result.

The work has been completed on the laneway wall between Vinnies and Janti Hair by Sunshine Coast artist Claire Matthews whose work on the laneway wall is called ‘The singing of the saws’.

Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said the distinctive black and white style of the work adds a contemporary edge to the town’s historical landscape.

“The themes of the artwork capture the unique blend of locally significant cultural heritage, our stunning natural surrounds, and reflects Landsborough’s evolution as a vibrant, well-connected and creative community, with a rich past and exciting future,” he said.

Landsborough House to be rebuilt in heritage style

By Sonia Clark Building work has started on the Maleny Street site of the historic late 1800s property at Landsborough that was tragically lost to fire earlier this year.

In the past six months, owners Shane Herbert and Rachelle Headley said they had worked their way through dealing with the substantial loss of the heritage building that was also their home. Rachelle said that they were now able to move forward, and with the care and compassion of family builders J Co Constructions, they have plans to reconstruct the heritage look of the original building using modern materials.

“We wanted to honour what it was in the original building that was so special and to recreate what we loved

about the house. We took photos of the original house to Jo, Anita and the team at J Co Constructions to help create a design that would look almost identical in style to the original building from the street,” Rachelle said.

The couple, who bought the property two years ago, only became aware of the house’s local heritage listing six months after buying the property.

At the time Rachelle said it had no impact on them as they had already planned to retain the design and style during any renovations.

In the process of planning the rebuild, Anita Bouwman from J Co Constructions said that the heritage overlay meant they had to ensure all the correct processes and appropriate council signoffs were obtained before commencing work.

It’s the last straw

Poppy Ives – visionary ocean warrior

By Sonia Clark Young local Poppy Ives is passionate about the health of our oceans and marine life, and is keen to do her bit for ocean conservation.

The year 10 Beerwah State High School student is currently undertaking training to enhance her leadership skills so that she, along with her friend and fellow young conservationist Jazmin Simmons, can conduct a Seaside Scavenge beach clean-up event scheduled for September this year.

Both girls belong to a group established by Poppy and her family called Visionary Ocean Warriors.

Poppy said the small group, made up of family and friends, seeks to unite community members to help make a positive difference by tackling issues of marine debris and plastic in our waterways, as well as encouraging better ocean and waterway health by organising beach clean ups and conservation updates.

“Visionary Ocean Warrior came about because my brother, sisters and I were a part of the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors but we wanted to be more involved in the ocean side of things to help the ocean. So we decided to make Visionary Ocean Warriors,” Poppy said.

From a young age, Poppy always loved swimming, beaches and spending time in the ocean, and aspires to become a marine biologist when she leaves school.

She is interested in the ocean because it hasn’t all been discovered and it’s pretty cool, especially with all the creatures in the ocean.

Committed to local conservation projects, Poppy thinks more young people should get involved in conservation and looking after our oceans.

“More people should get involved because it can be fun and it doesn’t have to be just about picking up rubbish. We only have one Earth, so we all need to protect our oceans and land,” Poppy said.

Poppy and Jazmin are spending time during the holidays being part of the not-for-profit organisation Seaside Scavenge and its Spring into Scavenge program, which will see the girls host a beach cleanup mini-festival in Caloundra later in the year.

The girls were inspired to get involved through their association with marine biologist Chad Buxton, who initially told them about the program.

“As part of the introduction to the program, we are learning about the many positives of the circular economy where we reduce waste by reusing and

recycling, and how to run our own Seaside Scavenge.

We are planning to hold the event at the end of September at Happy Valley,” Poppy said.

Poppy has recently been shortlisted as one of five finalists in the inaugural Les Hall Young Conservationist Award for her work as an ocean champion volunteer, cleaning up local beaches and raising awareness of marine debris. Alert to the dangers of plastics to marine life, Poppy also conducts quarterly microplastic studies for AUSMAP, a nationwide microplastic study.

Poppy said her future plans are to hold a Seaside Scavenge next year, along with continuing to conduct monthly beach clean ups at Golden Beach.

“At each clean up we enter the data into the Tangaroa Blue Foundation’s Australian Marine Debris Initiative, a citizen science project mapping the rubbish found on beaches all over Australia. Picking the rubbish up is not enough. We need to all work hard to stop it at its source, so reducing the use of plastics is vital - a plastic free me equals a plastic free sea,” Poppy said. www.facebook.com/visionaryoceanwarrior

The Queensland Government has introduced legislation to ban single-use plastic items in Queensland, starting with straws, stirrers, cutlery and plates.

Minister for Environment and the Great Barrier Reef Leeanne Enoch said the government was committed to reducing the destructive impact of plastic waste on our waterways, marine life and environment.

“First our government banned single-use plastic bags, then we introduced the highly successful Containers for Change program, and now we have taken the next step in our war on plastic waste by introducing this Bill,” Ms Enoch said.

“Almost 20,000 responses were received, with 94 per cent of submissions in favour of a ban.

“That’s an overwhelming statement from communities wanting to find a positive solution to reducing plastic waste and protecting our environment,” she said.

As well as banning the supply and sale of singleuse plastic straws, stirrers, cutlery and plates, the proposed legislation will also provide a means in the future to ban more single-use plastic like coffee cups, polystyrene cups, take-away food containers and heavy weight plastic bags, following public consultation.

“We know Queensland businesses, just like other businesses around the world, are being impacted by the global coronavirus pandemic,” Ms Enoch said.

“That’s why the Bill allows for flexibility, with the start date for the ban to be no earlier than July 1, 2021, allowing businesses and the hospitality industry adequate time to source new products.”

Toby Hutcheon, the Queensland manager of Boomerang Alliance, welcomed the ban, which he said was the next step in reducing plastic litter.

“These items are amongst the most littered items in Queensland. According to Clean Up Australia 36 per cent of all litter in Queensland is plastic packaging,” Mr Hutcheon said.

Ms Enoch said that the government recognised vulnerable community members with the proposed legislation considering the needs of the disability, aged care and health communities by providing an exemption for these sectors.

Queensland Disability Advisory Council chair Sharon Boyce said that overall the sector was supportive of the proposed ban since exemptions were provided for people with a disability who rely on single-use plastics as part of their daily life routines.

Beerwah businesses miss out on post-COVID travel boom Businesses in Beerwah and surrounding townships are missing out on the considerable economic benefits that should be flowing to the region after the lifting of the COVID-19

travel restrictions.

Members of caravan and recreational vehicle (RV) groups are still prohibited from staying at the Beerwah Sportsground as part of organised rallies and events.

Earlier this year, Glasshouse Country & Maleny News reported that the Beerwah Sportsground Management Committee (BSMC) was turning away short-term caravan and RV campers, and the thousands of dollars they bring to the region, due to strict Sunshine Coast Council leasehold conditions that have recently been enforced.

A recent change of approach by the council meant these rallies were deemed not to be an official ‘event’, which meant members of the groups and clubs were prohibited by council from staying at the sportsground and connecting to power.

No amount of pleading from the BSMC, local businesses, the chamber of commerce or local residents has swayed council from its hard-lined stance on the matter.

State Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle recently met with the BSMC to help find a way forward in its long

and frustrating battle with the council over

changes to the lease agreement.

“Beerwah Sportsground is fighting for its economic life and the right to simply provide basic services to travellers,” Mr McArdle said.

There are two primary issues the council has raised that Mr McArdle and the BSMC are trying desperately to resolve the right to provide power to travellers and the right to host rallies or gatherings as an ‘event’.

“In 2017 the council revoked the management committee’s right to provide power to travellers citing that this violated the approval of limited facilities camping interim policy, which the council endorsed for the sportsground in 2014,” Mr McArdle said.

“Yet it was council itself that approved the installation of the power points at every camp site in 2006.

“Then in February 2020, the management committee received advice that they would no longer be permitted to host rallies or gatherings for caravan clubs as their lease states that the permitted use of the land is

sportsground and ancillary activities, though the land on which the club operates is deemed as showground and recreational reserve. Surely recreation covers caravans?” Mr McArdle said.

“Given that we are still in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic and our borders have opened it is incredible that the council is not moving heaven and earth, including contacting the relevant minister’s office to obtain his consent to have power linked to the users of caravans.”

Beerwah Sportsground spokesperson Jenny Broderick said that in a time when Queensland was apparently “good to go” and all levels of government were encouraging local tourism, it made no sense that the Beerwah Sportsground was being unfairly limited in its ability to attract tourism to the area.

“Our sportsground has been hosting caravan rallies since 1984, yet now we are unable to host as a result of the incorrect description of the grounds on a lease created by council,” Ms Broderick said.

“This school holidays alone we have declined almost 70 per cent of enquiries, mostly because of our inability to offer power to the campers. Power

is available, however we have been instructed not to allow campers access.

“The sportsground is the only local location where larger groups can stay together or where campers can stay who just want basic facilities and not be in a commercial van park.

“Our facility also allows for larger vans and RVs that simply do not fit at many other standard commercial premises,” Ms Broderick said.

Cr Baberowski has advised that a detailed letter was sent to the Beerwah Sportsgrounds management committee on June 26 outlining the outcomes of the request for a review of camping and event arrangements.

“Council has since held discussions with the management committee regarding proposed future recreational activities and the committee is currently preparing a proposal on future activities for Council’s consideration,” Cr Baberowski said.

New faces to meet

After three and a half years of running the busy Meat at Landsborough Andrew and Lisa Grigor finalised the sale of their business to Allan and Gill Noonan last week.

The Grigors have enjoyed operating the business in Landsborough and have appreciated the support of the local community.

Lisa said that during the time they have operated the business, particularly during the recent COVID-19 times, they have seen a change in the interest and choices of the customers. Their customers have become much more creative in their approach to cooking including embracing many of today’s popular cooking and diet trends.

Paleo diets have seen a dramatic increase in customers making their own bone broths, as well as a strong interest in using different cuts of meat, with people doing slow barbequing and meat smoking.

Andrew has also developed a strong following for his gourmet sausages

Lisa and Andrew with Allan and Gill including the pork and fennel, pork and Tasmanian apple cider, and pork, apple and sultana as well as bratwurst, so no doubt Allan will be under pressure to keep up with the demands of locals.

While the Grigors have sold their business they don’t have any plans to move out of the area.

Maleny money now a thing!

By Lea Parkes For a number of years the president of Maleny Commerce Nicole Hilton has been keen to keep locals spending their money locally and last week the launch of the Chamber’s newest project, Maleny Gift Card, will go a long way to making this happen.

While the idea is simple, creating a gift card that can only be spent in Maleny at participating stores took a bit of wrangling, however, the Chamber’s committee have stayed focused and worked with an established program ‘Why Leave Town’ that is currently operating successfully in many regional towns across Australia.

The Maleny Gift Card can be redeemed in 95 stores including cafés and restaurants, retail outlets, vets, dentists, solicitors, hardware, fuel stations, op shops and even a tax agent; the complete list is available on the Chamber’s website.

If you want to purchase cards, they are available at eight locations: Maleny IGA, Maleny Food Co News Room, Maleny Food Co Café, The Maleny Bookshop, On Obi Maleny, Natural Fibre Maleny, Maleny Cheese and Purple Palate, and the credit is valid for three years.

There is a minimum spend of $30 when loading the card, and you can check the balance online.

The Chamber Committee have been pleased with the support the initiative has received with $20,000 in presales from Maleny IGA. Business owners Rob and Sam Outridge decided that buying the cards was a great way to say thanks to their staff for going the extra mile for their customers during the COVID restrictions.

Nicole said the gift cards are a great way to say thanks to your staff, family or friends, as well as being perfect for a birthday gift, or a reward for a customer referral, for petty cash or a raffle prize.

“We are also fortunate to have the support of a grant from Sunshine Coast Council to assist with the administrative costs of setting up the program which has been fantastic, and we are proud to be the first town on the Sunshine Coast to become part of the program,” Nicole said.

Meet the Producer Producers name: Lauren Brisbane Farm name: QCamel Farm location: Caloundra Downs Years of operation: Seven QCamel is one of two operating camel milk farms in Queensland and one of just a handful within Australia. It is also the only certified organic camel farm in the world – something owner and director Lauren Brisbane is incredibly proud of.

Lauren has an unwavering passion for camels and is committed to providing an ethical way of farming in which she and her team treat the camels with love and respect. And Lauren said that they reciprocate that love two-fold.

While I haven’t yet had the chance to visit Lauren and her camels at their farm in Caloundra Downs, I did have the pleasure of chatting all things camel with Lauren late last week. We covered everything from the matriarchy of camel herds, how beneficial camels are to land management, the benefits of camel products and, of course, just how gentle these giants can be.

Where it all began …

It was years ago while working within the cattle industry that Lauren suggested introducing camels to co-graze with the cattle that really ignited the spark for camel milk production. She explained that when co-grazing with cattle the camels helped to keep cattle calmer and could actually help increase the cattle’s weight between 5-10% (this is due to microorganisms found in camels’ guts that help in the breakdown of plant material and can be transferred to cattle through water troughs). From here, she began her research and clearly recalls suggesting to her husband about purchasing a small herd to help in her research efforts. QCamel is now home to 100 camels, with another 15-20 due to be born by the end of the year.

In the early days, the Brisbane family set up the Australian Camel Industry Association, which Lauren chaired for seven years.

A little about QCamel camels?

Lauren and her team live and breathe ethical and sustained farming, and say they treat their camels with love and respect – as they are part of their big family.

“Camels are loving creatures and incredibly intelligent and it’s important for people to see that you can still have animal production without impacting their lives and their health,” Lauren said.

“We have a no-slaughter policy and, in fact, camels are a matriarchal group so older females play an important role for babies, who look to them for advice.”

Lauren said that they do not separate mother and babies, and prioritised mothers feeding their babies over collecting milk.

What products do you sell?

QCamel began the production of camel milk in 2014, when they first started farming camels, and over the years have introduced a number of other products, such as powdered camel’s milk, which is especially popular in Asian markets.

Lauren said the camel milk was particularly beneficial for gut health as no grain was fed to the camels. It also has a range of benefits for those with allergies, insulin dependency and for people with autism, as it contains no dairy allergens.

“Early this year we launched our skin care line, which has taken five years to develop. We walked through the whole process to ensure it is purely natural and is particularly effective for problem skin,” Lauren said.

Take me away Stacey Bentley’s dream tour of Turkey Born and bred local Stacey Bentley shared some gorgeous photos with GC&M News of a dream trip she had late last year to Turkey that also involved a surprise wedding proposal!

Stacey and fiancé Juan’s trip to Turkey was a dream tour

Stacey said she first met her Colombian fiancé Juan Zuluaga at the end of 2018. After dating for a few months, Juan had to leave the country because of visa complications.

Certain of their future together, Stacey decided to go with him to visit his family for a month, returning to the Sunshine Coast in February 2019.

They spent the next nine months apart waiting for Juan’s visa application to process. During this time, Stacey planned a return visit to Colombia, which would include experiencing a Colombian Christmas.

“Interestingly, when it came time to book the flights, Juan offered to book for me, telling me at the time that the best route to Colombia was around the back way via Istanbul, which seemed strange but we had discussed previously that a dream of ours was to go to Turkey one day, especially a place called Cappadocia,” Stacey said.

Although Juan said he would be unable to join Stacey when she arrived in Turkey, Stacey said she had her suspicions and it turned out that Juan

had planned to meet her in Istanbul.

The couple were reunited in the hotel foyer of Mercure Istanbul, spending two weeks in Turkey on a dream tour around the country. A highlight of the trip was definitely Juan’s proposal.

“One day Juan pulled me aside from the group and said we were going horse riding – this was on my wish list of things to do there considering how much I love horses and that I have been competing at horse shows all my life,” Stacey said.

“We met our horses and began riding through the amazing peaks of Cappadocia where the locals live inside sandstone caves, and the scenery was just breathtaking.”

Later the couple stopped at a cave for sunset, where Juan proposed to Stacey.

She said their trip to Turkey was an unforgettably exciting adventure that fulfilled many of their shared dreams including riding in a hot air balloon together.

The couple have since returned to Australia and are currently planning an intimate

local wedding ceremony on August 8, with plans to celebrate in the future with family and friends when Juan’s Colombian family can make it over.

Books, books and more books We had such a positive response to the book-related features in our past two print editions that we decided to continue the theme. This time we have included a catch up with local librarian Amanda Kennedy and a chat with author Mary Garden, as well as finding out a little bit more about book clubs and why they are so popular.

By Sonia Clark Mary Garden’s biography ‘Sundowner of the Skies’ about her father Oscar Garden was published last year. She has shared some insights into what being a published author has meant to her.

Mary enjoyed the resurgence of interest in the previously undervalued story of her pioneering aviator father Oscar Garden’s life, a story she combined through the lens of her own memoir.

The book took many years to come to fruition. Mary said it was a huge relief to have the story finally published.

“It wasn’t just that the research and writing had taken a long time, it is also extremely difficult to get books published these days. It took a year to find a home for it and I was beyond excited to have it accepted by two publishers in the end,” Mary said.

She suggests that writers who have something they want published should go to either a manuscript assessment service or find an excellent editor.

“There are a lot of resources out there on the submission process and if it has not been assessed as worthy of publication, don’t give up.

“From my experience of having selfpublished my first book and having this second book published by a small publisher, I’d recommend selfpublishing only as a last resort.

“It is very difficult for self-published books to get publicity, such as reviews in mainstream newspapers, and to be distributed to bookshops,” Mary said.

When her second book was eventually published, Mary said she was very surprised and often extremely moved at the reaction to the book and level of interest it garnered.

She said she knew it was a great story that deserved to be told and published but she was initially concerned that it would only appeal to aviation buffs.

“I was delighted to see that it had a wide appeal. I got scores of emails from readers to tell me how much they loved the book, which made the long arduous journey to publication worthwhile. I’ve reconnected with people from my childhood and distant relatives I never knew existed. It was quite dizzying,” Mary said.

While there is still a long way to go with the book, Mary is grateful for the timing of publication. Due to C0VID-19, some events have been postponed or rescheduled, including a book tour to Scotland that was meant to be in May. “The book could easily have not been written. I only became interested in my father’s life after an article of mine was published in the ‘Australian Financial Review’ in 2005.

“Although readers pestered me to write a book, I never really thought that would eventuate. There were lots of gaps and I lacked the confidence.

“I took a break from the project for some years but the story would not leave me alone. It haunted me until I knew I could not get on with my life until I had finished it,” Mary said.

Reading books becomes social For many people, books and reading are one of life’s great pleasures.

In recent years there has been a resurgence of interest in social book clubs as people realise the benefits of engaging in discussions around books with a chance to catch up with friends and neighbours, often with the Book club member added bonus of Jan Dalton enjoying food, refreshments and sometimes even a glass of wine or two.

We caught up with Diamond Valley resident Jan Dalton, who has been a member of her local book club for more than a decade, to find out what she enjoys about the book club and why she thought the group had been a success for so many years.

Jan says that while she can’t quite remember the exact date her book club started, she thinks the group had been catching up since around 2008.

Initially it was set up by her proactive community-minded neighbour Marilyn Schrapnel, in addition to regular meetings of their local weeding and planting group.

The Maleny Library

Maleny Library supervisor Amanda Kennedy has an obvious passion for the intrinsic importance of books and the way they teach us to think, reason and articulate.

Amanda believes books helped her to grow as a person and to understand the world around her, as well as providing comfort, knowledge, escape, and sanity.

Having worked at the Maleny Library for more than ten years, she is most appreciative of three things - the collection, the customers and the staff.

She said she loved that the library had a strong patron-driven collection.

“If our customers have a request, we’ll look to purchase it as often others will also share the interest. It is very rare that we are not able to get a book in for a customer – usually only because it is no longer published,” Amanda said.

She also loves that customers are equally passionate about books, which inspires her to want to provide an exceptional personalised service.

Jan said she thought one of the key reasons the book club had run for so many years was the great organisational efforts of Marilyn.

“We’ve always had a strong leading person who has always been very good at setting the dates for the regular meetings, organising the book reservations and pickups through the library, and reminding us all of the meetings.

“Marilyn made it so easy to just turn up and it was also a lovely way to regularly catch up with neighbours and friends. Had it been left to our own devices – despite being well meaning – it may not have actually happened,” Jan said.

Pre-COVID-19 restrictions, the group of 8-12 members met about every six weeks with everyone bringing a plate to share and meetings rotated among various members’ houses. Group members vary in age, with the oldest member now in her early 90s.

Jan said she loved the opportunity to catch up in a social setting, as well as the chance to enjoy books that she may not have considered reading.

“Sometimes you read a book you’ve discovered through your book club that is unexpectedly delightful, or a wonderful surprise that you would never normally pick up,” Jan said.

She appreciates that the customers have a wide range of interests and many are very well read, which she said provided a challenge and a pleasure to serve them.

Amanda said the people in Maleny cared for and were deeply passionate about their community and their library.

Amanda is enthusiastic about the care and dedication of the Maleny library staff, who all live locally and who are equally passionate about books and customer service.

“We have a very close-knit team who genuinely care about each other, personally and professionally. We support each other, we have some great ideas about presenting our collection, we provide really excellent customer service and we do it all with humour.

I feel so lucky to work with them and to do the job I do,” Amanda said.

Op shops doing a bustling trade Our local area offers a great selection of local charity operators that are now open for business and ready to entice shoppers with unique treasures and exciting bargains.

Many local op shops are moving towards returning to pre-COVID hours, with additional measures for social distancing and hand sanitation part of the new normal for business operations.

Interestingly, most of the local charity operators are reporting a huge swell of shoppers keen to source distinctive discoveries, cool clothing and budget-friendly household items.

If you have done some decluttering and haven’t already donated your goods to an op shop, there is a good general rule of thumb to consider - if you wouldn’t give it to a friend then please don’t consider giving it to an op shop. That means no donations of broken, dirty or poor quality items.

Current opening times at op shops are subject to change and each shop has different processes for donations, so it is best to check with each op shop to avoid disappointment.

We are definitely spoilt for choice and if you have a free day I recommend getting organised and working out an op shop trail.

John and Elizabeth Simpson If you have ever driven down Simpson Street in Beerwah, you may have wondered where the name came from? The Simpsons were a family who selected a property at Peachester (known as Peach Trees) back in 1877.

Local sources suggest John Simpson, who was born in 1848, first visited the Peachester district sometime between 1873-1874 along with his brother William and their friend James Mawhinney.

When he settled in the area, John named the property Bunya Aris and it is suggested that his wife Elizabeth was the first white woman to live in the area.

John and Elizabeth Simpson established the Coochin Creek Hotel on Gympie Road in 1881-82. This became the

centre of activity for the district, with a bustling general store, registed post office, blacksmith and wheelright all trading on-site.

John was a councillor and at one time chairman of the Caboolture Divisional Board.

He later established a sawmill in Beerwah and was active in many community organisations, including first chairman of the Beerwah School of Arts.

He was a big employer, at times having up to 40 men working for him.

Elizabeth was well known for her assistance as a midwife for many early families.

The couple had nine children - Annie, William, Janet, Robert, Elizabeth, John Jr, Catherine, Ellen Anne and Mary

Coochin Creek Hotel, Gympie Road (now Old Gympie Road), established 1881-82

Simpson’s Beerwah Hotel, Simpson Street, opened 1915. Licensee and manager: John’s son William Simpson Ann - as well as four foster children, Elizabeth and Catherine Blair, and Bill and Tom Hayes.

After the death of his wife in 1912, John built a two-storey wooden hotel in Beerwah on the corner of what is now Simpson Street and Peachester Road.

The liquor licence was transferred to his eldest son William, and the new venture operated as Simpson’s Beerwah Hotel.

John continued to run old Coochin Hotel as a store and boarding house, helped by his eldest daughter Annie Verrent.

The building became known as The Homestead.

Neighbourhood Centre update Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre Morris House at Landsborough

Volunteers returned to the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre last week following the temporary COVID-19 closure.

Current opening hours are Monday to Thursday 9am-12noon, with the centre volunteers busy transitioning to their new normal routine that includes giving increased hygiene and social distancing protocols priority.

With the reopening, discussions around future community projects, workshops and events have begun, with an exciting community art project currently brewing.

The Boomerang Bag sewing group is back on track, meeting every second Tuesday morning, and there are opportunities for volunteers to get involved in community projects, future event ideas, administration and office work. Positions on the neighbourhood centre’s management committee are also currently available.

The centre’s free counselling services

have recommenced, providing assistance navigating life’s issues. The counselling service, which is suited to individuals, couples or families, is available Monday and Tuesday by appointment made through the centre.

Emergency relief is also available, with those in need welcome to drop in any time during opening hours to access support and assistance. Information and referrals are also available through the centre to access additional support services throughout the hinterland and Sunshine Coast including financial counselling, and domestic violence and addiction support.

During opening hours, the centre’s friendly volunteers are on hand to answer questions and provide assistance, and community members are welcome to call or drop by for a chat if they would like to get involved or find out more.

Maleny Neighbourhood Centre The Maleny Neighbourhood Centre has resumed normal operating hours and is open Monday to Friday from 9am-3pm.

Naturally, hygiene and appropriate social distancing protocols to benefit volunteer and community safety will be in place. A number of the services at the centre have also resumed, though some may be still operating at limited capacity.

Tracie Sanim has recently taken on the position of centre coordinator and development worker. Community members may recognise Tracie as a candidate for Division 5 in the recent Sunshine Coast Council election held in March, or from her extensive volunteer and community involvement around the coast and hinterland areas.

Emergency relief service is available 10am-2pm daily during the week.

The centre’s Justice of the Peace (JP) is available Monday - Friday, from 9.30am-12.30pm in a marquee out the front of the centre, to witness signatures on official documents and related notary services.

Glasshouse Country & Maleny News

Every Thursday, the community lunch is back from 12.30pm with anyone welcome to attend and enjoy some company and a delicious meal. It’s a great way to connect with others in the community and the weekly lunch costs a very reasonable $7.

If you’d like to learn more about floral arrangement, the Maleny Floral Art Group has also recommenced on the second Tuesday of the month from 9am-12noon.

Fix It Café is back and open on the second and fourth Thursday of the month from 9am-2pm for a $5 donation per item.

Morris House reopened in mid-June, returning to its pre-lockdown opening hours of 9.30am-12.30pm Tuesday to Thursday, and 9.30am-1pm Mondays and Fridays.

Volunteers at the Landsboroughbased neighbourhood centre are still mindful of practising social distancing and good hygiene, so visitors are requested to either wash or sanitise hands upon entry.

Centre coordinator Ann Husband said the usual services were back, including a comprehensive emergency relief program, computer, online and printing access (with free internet), and the JP service on Wednesdays, which is also available by appointment on other days if urgently required. The Orange Sky Laundry service is also available every Thursday from 9.30am-12.30pm.

“Our emergency relief program is available for those in need. Support includes access to food, Woolies and fuel vouchers, help with Telstra phone vouchers, Go cards and PBS–medical prescription support,” Ann said.

“We’ve got eight computers for community members to access the internet or to use word processing, scanning or printing during opening hours.”

She said the centre continued to be

grateful for ongoing community support from local residents and organisations.

“We’d also like to thank Sunshine Coast Council which recently approved a major grant to improve our airconditioning units at the centre and awarded us combined COVID-19 assistance and a discretionary fund grant to help us rebuild the access ramp at the back of the centre,” Ann said.

Mooloolah Community Centre The Mooloolah Community Centre opened again for business at the beginning of June, with normal operating hours of 9am-1pm Monday to Saturday.

Mooloolah Valley Community Association secretary Anita Verwayen said that since reopening, the centre had been very busy, especially the community op shop, which has been doing a roaring trade.

“We are still mindful of social distancing and good hygiene practices, and we have been very impressed with how good people have been about

limiting numbers into the op shop,” Anita said.

The monthly community barbeques will stay on hold until early next year.

The area behind the centre is prepared for the men’s shed project to start and work has been completed on the renovated toilet block (including unisex all-access toilet) and storage area.

Art classes organised through the centre are set to resume at the Mooloolah Hall across the road and plans are under way to host the monthly ladies morning tea gatherings.

“We’ve had two fantastic volunteers, Dalyta Vortman and Alex Radywonik, assist us with the garden out front, and every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning they now run a mixed variety plant and herb stall from 9am12noon,” Anita said.

“We also have our JP service and two volunteer community support workers available Monday and Friday at the centre to assist with resources for those in need.”

Scouts have some fun

New pathway for Witta Since COVID-19 lockdown rules were introduced, Witta Sports and Recreational Club has been busy updating its clubrooms and surrounds including a new bar area.

Club president Lynda Burgess said the club had been fortunate to gain the support of the Maleny Apex Club members, who laid a concrete unloading area and path to the undercover section of the club house.

“This path will enable members of the public to access the area with

wheelchairs, wheelie walkers and prams,” Lynda said.

The Apex Club members were on hand from 6am on Saturday, July 4 to get things under way and finished by early afternoon.

“Our committee is very grateful for their help and wishes to thank the members for their assistance and to congratulate them on their support of the whole community of Maleny and surrounds,” Lynda said.

With the easing of some of the COVID-19 restrictions, the Landsborough Joey Scouts celebrated with an end of term treasure/pirate themed party.

What a fabulous day they all had searching for treasure with a compass and clues, dodging the cannon balls and climbing the mast of the pirate ship.

After a term of scouting from home, Landsborough’s youngest Scouts are looking forward to returning to faceto-face Scout meetings at the Rocky Creek Scout den on Old Gympie Road, Landsborough.

All of Landsborough Scout’s sections are returning to regular meetings, with some regulations in place for everyone’s safety, and each group meeting weekly during term time.

Joeys (5-7 years) meet on Tuesdays 6-7pm. Cubs (8-10 years) meet Tuesdays 6-7:30pm. Scouts (11-14 years) and Venturers (15-17 years) meet on Thursdays 6-7pm.

Living - Arts Community art project in Glass House

The Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre is seeking submissions for a Bringing Community Together art project.

Neighbourhood centre volunteers are calling on people in the local community to come together and create a vibrant feature to reflect the heart of the Glass House Mountains’ place and people over time.

Art entrants are asked to design and paint artworks that will collaboratively bring to life three concrete blocks located at the neighbourhood centre.

Entries are open to adults and young adults (12 years and over) who live in the local region.

Artworks are to represent one of the following themes: • Culture and/or the Glass House Mountains • Farming/early settlement/Cobb & Co • Community now All materials for painting the blocks will be supplied and it is free to participate. Paints have been generously donated by Glass House Mountains Mitre 10 and the Paint Place in Beerwah.

The upcoming exhibition Maleny Cream @ The Butter Factory at Cooroy presents a dynamic group exhibition from nationally acclaimed and highly respected emerging artists working in Maleny encompassing mediums from ceramics and sculpture, to drawing and painting.

The exhibition includes work from David Paulson and Peter Hudson who have been represented in the Archibald Prize and have paintings in the Queensland Art Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery.

Expressionistic use of paint and visceral response to landscape can be seen in the work of these artists and in the work of Marvene Ash whose painterly approach captures the vitality of the landscape.

Shannon Garson is a nationally acclaimed artist and Churchill fellow and her refined porcelain forms engage with nature through drawing and painted imagery.

Laura Vecmane connects to the landscape through her muted palette and impressionistic approach to painting, while David Bongiorno displays a mastery of pencil and ink in his sensitive nudes and figurative studies.

Atto Zarzura and Donald Greenfield use paper in wildly creative ways. Atto channels his unique imagination into a wonderful collection of fantastical bird sculptures.

Acclaimed cartoonist Donald Greenfield has been published in ‘The Bulletin’ and ‘Rolling Stone’ and shows his latest autobiographical collage work.

Just recently I showed Education Minister Grace Grace around the new Baringa State High School site. From the beginning of 2021, it will start to shape hundreds of local youngsters’ lives, but for the moment, it’s providing 382 construction jobs and 14 apprenticeships. This new school is a first-rate investment for our children’s future and their children’s future.

And the schools in Beerwah and Landsborough are having airconditioning installed in classrooms right now. This is what a Palaszczuk Labor Government does — gets things done.

I was also pleased to learn that $18 million has been set aside for safety upgrades to Steve Irwin Way. This will fit hand in glove with a new project at Australia Zoo, The Croc Hunter Eco-tourism Park. Supported by a State Government investment of $3million it is expected to add 39,000 more visitor-nights a year to the area, with additional visitors spending about $4.5 million locally.

Croc Hunter Park is expected to offer 43 extra local jobs, on top of the 500 already at the Zoo. This is great news for locals.

I’ve asked that the Steve Irwin Way upgrades include new road signs near Australia Zoo to encourage visitors to explore and enjoy the nearby communities of Beerwah and Landsborough – bringing additional customers to local small businesses.

Other Unite and Recover initiatives that are already making a difference locally include the Small business grants of up to $10,000, in a program worth $200 million – and

$200 off all household electricity bills – benefiting all Queenslanders.

As a proud local, I want to get things done for the community and represent the residents of Beerwah, Landsborough and Glenview.

the way we do?

Why do humans have a knack for negative thinking?

The simple answer is cortisol. Your body is wired to react to stress to protect you from predators and other threats. In modern society, we do not generally have to worry about being eaten by a predator but our bodies treat all the things that stress us as threats.

Daily demands like dealing with getting the kids out the door, the demanding boss at work, the project we need to finish, bills to be paid, our grumpy partner, etc, are treated as threats.

As a result, the human brain is more wired to negative than positive. We tend to notice and highlight the things that go wrong and ignore or downplay the things that go right.

home and the first thing we do is talk about the trials and tribulations we faced during our day. The actual event probably took no more than five minutes but our recounting usually takes at least half an hour. We have amplified the negative experience three times or more. If our audience echoes our experience, it is amplified even more. In addition to this, our internal voice is likely to be judgemental, critical and not particularly keen on the idea of overlooking perceived mistakes.

A perfect storm of perceived external and internal threats. Is there anything we can do about this? Yes, we can learn how to exercise some compassion for ourselves.

Self-compassion requires that we be warm and understanding towards ourselves - accepting that we make mistakes and fail, that we suffer and struggle, that we are imperfect and

will inevitably get things wrong some of the time, and that life is sometimes cruel and difficult. It is the ability to be gentle with ourselves when things do not go the way we think they “should” and allowing ourselves to feel the pain that comes with disappointment, loss, and frustration.

We cannot always be or get what we want. When we fight against or deny reality, we only increase our suffering in the form of stress, frustration and self-criticism. Learning to accept with sympathy and kindness helps us to return to a calmer and more peaceful state of mind. Practising selfcompassion helps to reduce the level of stress experienced and our threat perception. It helps us to produce less cortisol.

Self-compassion is not about thinking positive thoughts or repeating affirmations. It takes considerable effort to learn to accept with kindness and sympathy even when we really do

not like what is happening. It takes courage to face painful situations and allow ourselves to feel. It requires practice and commitment to embracing our human frailties.

Dr Kristin Neff is an expert in selfcompassion and suggests the following as a daily practice.

Recall a situation that causes you stress and notice the feelings and sensations in your body. Say to yourself: 1. This is a moment of suffering.

2. Suffering is part of life and we all experience it.

Put your hand over your heart and feel the warmth of your touch.

3. What do I need to hear right now to express kindness to myself?

• May I be kind to myself.

We had a lovely surprise when a driver from Glasshouse Country Care dropped by last week with a treat for us. It was a genuine thrill and a pleasure, especially as the chap who delivered it was so cheery. How fortunate we are to live in a region where such care is taken of the community.

Since the recent partial lockdown in Queensland, one has to wonder if the residents of Brisbane and the Gold Coast have nothing else to do but drive up to the hinterland and get away from where they live.

The number of cars coming into Maleny (and presumably the rest of the hinterland) in the past few weeks has had to be seen to be believed – not only on weekends but over the entire week.

Much as we all need tourism and business for our area, this is now out of control. There is often nowhere for locals to park and the more popular shops, particularly the supermarkets, are like a madhouse – crowds, total ignorance of social distancing and a lack of consideration for others, especially the elderly and disabled.

I have no idea what, if anything, could be done to ameliorate this development but maybe others might have some ideas?

Surely we, who live here, have the right to be able to shop, visit the dentist or the doctor without having to drive round looking for somewhere to park the car relatively close to our destination?

I feel very strongly that something needs to be done. Or are we just to become the latest example of the Byron Bay syndrome, with no alternative than to sit back and accept it?

Outrage at major overhaul in university funding

I am a first-year student at the University of Queensland studying a Bachelor of Laws/Arts. Upon hearing of the federal government’s overhaul of university funding I was completely outraged.

While I understand the general motivation behind this change, I cannot find a way to rationalise the economic argument that humanities students should be punished.

To begin, I am of the opinion that higher education should be free.

We live in a society that holds the discourse that higher education is something to be valued. As an aspiring academic living in this social and political climate, I could not feel less valued.

Furthermore, I find that this policy is completely short-sighted and will have immense consequences for the future: not only for students but also for educators. University educators in the field of humanities are already understaffed and unappreciated.

This push, which aims to reduce the number of humanities students, will further strain this industry.

On a fundamental level, the notion of reducing universities to employment sweatshops, and their students to job robots for the government, is wrong.

Universities are not merely places to build jobs. Rather they are places to engage in critical inquiry and find a political voice. This change is a sheer stratagem to disguise the already painfully transparent political rhetoric: this government does not want educated young people. This government does not want to be held accountable to young people.

The act of diminishing the free and well-informed political thought of the next generation is fascist.

We need diversity in the workplace.

I cannot imagine a world where every academic, law professional

and philosopher is a rich white man.

The job landscape as a result of this completely abrasive policy will be bulldozed by people from affluent backgrounds. No longer would the best person be employed; it would merely be the richest person. In Australia, the land of the ‘young and free’, I cannot see how these are the actions of a free nation.

This policy is a sham and a disgrace.

This is not just an attack on humanities students. This is an attack on academia. This is an attack on critical thought.

Koalas in danger

Koalas in SEQ are in decline and in danger of disappearing thanks mainly to urban sprawl and massive highways.

Full credit to Andrew Powell for acquiring a $2.4M property (of 125 ha) as a corridor joining other habitats at Crohamhurst.

However, there is a cheaper way to give koalas a real chance in SEQ. Governments can transition unproductive government-owned State

Forests to the protected estate.

One such area exists around the Conondale, Wrattens and Bellthorpe National Parks. Labor governments have been creating and expanding these parks since 1989 and they now cover 164,000 ha.

In 2000, steadfastly opposed by Mr Powell’s LNP, Labor negotiated and established the South East Queensland Forest Agreement.

All stakeholders, including the timber industry, supported the plan to transition 425,000 ha to National Parks. It was not just for urban greenies, as the LNP likes to put it whenever Labor respects the environment.

When in government in 201215, the LNP with Mr Powell as Environment Minister cancelled the Agreement. Palaszczuk’s Labor government is on track to restore it.

The plan will protect large areas, and there will be no major roads. Good for bushwalkers, koalas and other wildlife.

Maleny Commerce recently hosted the launch of its Maleny gift card at the Maleny RSL Hall with around 40 Chamber of Commerce members in attendance.

Normally at GC&M News we refer to the photos in our Out & About section as our “social pics” but in these current times we have ensured that, for the first time, we have “socially distant pics”.

Fortunately there were quite a few families/people who live in the same household so we have kept within the rules.

The RSL also did a great job of making sure everyone followed the rules, with guests seated at tables and registration forms filled in. The catering done by The Orangery was adapted for a COVID safe environment - no long feasting table but individual cardboard feasting boxes.

Food News As people are starting to get out and about more, our options for heading out and enjoying local cafes and takeaway spots continues to expand.

On July 1 Beerwah’s newest café Boho Bean Café opened on Turner Street, next door to the laundromat, and is proving popular.

Last Thursday Beerburrum saw a quirky new café open. The Burrum Coffee Shack will be open 7 days a week; during the week they are open morning and afternoons, 6am-10am and then 3pm-6pm, and on Saturday and Sunday they are open from 6am2pm.

The café is owned by a trio of Beeburrum locals Bibi, Andy and Naidene, and its fresh produce, bread, meat and Maleny coffee are all sourced from local hinterland family businesses.

During the last few months the Mooloolah Valley Country Club has been closed which has given them time to get a new kitchen, a new roof and a paint job inside.

After having won an award in a smoking competition, Tracey is keen to perfect her craft and can’t wait for the locals to try her homemade marinades and give their feedback.

Dine In Take Out with Lea Parkes

With restrictions in place for dining at pubs during April, May and June, it has been great to see the local hotels reopen for meals.

I really admired how quickly the Beerwah and Landsborough hotels switched to serving takeaway only and Hotel Maleny was offering both takeaway and a delivery service.

However, it is nice to be able to order food and once again be able to sit at a table and enjoy a meal that someone else has done the hard work of preparing.

I recently visited the Landsborough Pub and, maybe because it had been a while since we had dined in, I had forgotten just how generous the meal sizes are there. I always think I can fit in an entrée and a main but really, I am kidding myself.

With so much choice on the menu it is usually easy to encourage someone else to share your entrée, especially if it is as good looking as the pub’s bruschetta.

And while I’m not a vegetarian, I love the creative approaches that the chefs come up with to make a vegetable like capsicum become the ‘hero’ of the dish, and was really happy with my Mexican

On this visit I had lunch with Judy from Glasshouse Country Tours who is always keen to check out what is on offer to share with future clients.

Judy had the fish of the day and was really impressed with the barramundi.

We all know that this is a tough time for anyone looking for work or training, and especially for local young people.

The federal government has introduced a number of new schemes in the past fortnight that will help in the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

Scholarships program The Coalition government’s $58.1 million Rural and Regional Enterprise Scholarships program is specifically designed to help students in regional areas like the hinterland to go to university.

In the most recent round we had two students from near Maleny funded with up to $18,000 each to go to QUT and Southern Cross University.

The program is open for more applications right now so I would encourage any local young people about to start university or in their first year to check the requirements and get an application in right away on the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre’s website.

JobTrainer The scholarships program is on top of the government’s new JobTrainer program announced last week, which could see as many of 6,000 low-cost places on training courses made available on the Sunshine Coast, and thousands of young apprentices supported to continue their work.

Harvest Trail service The government has also expanded the Harvest Trail Service to cover the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

This service matches people looking for work with local farmers and growers who need seasonal workers, with 23,000 matches achieved last year by the service.

We have to crack down on youth crime The LNP team has announced tough and comprehensive new plans to crackdown on youth crime across Queensland.

Enough is enough. Businesses shouldn’t have to count the cost of theft, families shouldn’t have to replace stolen property and police shouldn’t be stretched to breaking point.

An LNP government will: • Implement tougher laws • Monitor youth offenders on bail 24/7 • Introduce mandatory detention for third convictions • Establish a community payback arm program • Scrap youth bail houses • Trial justice reinvestment The LNP will give our police the tools, the laws and the resources they need to do their job and protect the community.

Free travel for students and seniors If elected on October 31, the LNP will introduce free off-peak travel for all seniors across the Citytrain network, which stretches from Gympie to the Gold Coast and inland to Ipswich.

Students starting full-time university and TAFE courses across Queensland will also be given $500 vouchers to pay for bus or train fares – or petrol if they live in areas lacking public transport.

Our plan will get more Queenslanders off the roads and create more capacity on peak-hour trains by encouraging travel at less crowded times.

Drivers in South East Queensland currently spend an average of 67 minutes a day travelling to and from work. Getting more people off the roads and onto public transport will help ease congestion and get commuters who can’t use public transport home quicker. The LNP’s plan is a big win for travellers and a big saving for seniors and students.

Improved major grants Council’s major grants round is now open. This financial year, in recognition of tightening budgets everywhere and the need to support projects that can start and finish quickly, we are temporarily suspending the co-funding requirements for major grants.

Community group volunteers have gone above and beyond to keep communities connected through the stress of this year. To help, we’re going to inject money into community groups to spend quickly and purposefully in our local economy on projects that will deliver maximum community benefit.

Improved local parks Excellent progress is being made on the improved and extended entry to Turner Street parklands and pathways. Investing in Division 5 Since the 2020/21 Sunshine Coast Council budget was handed down on June 25, I have received confirmation of additional funds for Division 5.

During this financial year there will be about $1.48 million spent on Hunchy Road at Palmwoods, funded by council in partnership with the Australian Government via the Black Spot Road Safety Program.

Additionally, the Queensland Government has confirmed the allocation of further funds under the Works for Queensland program, with $500,000 to upgrade amenities at the Palmwoods AFL/Cricket Club grounds and $200,000 to upgrade the roads and a large solar power system at the Maleny Showground.

I would like to extend my congratulations to these two groups on receiving this funding and I look forward to seeing the finished projects.

Twenty Sunshine Coast community organisations in the federal electorate of Fisher will receive funds from the Volunteer Grants Program.

Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said that the energy, expertise and time volunteers gave to others supported those most in need and represented what Australian communities were all about – giving a helping hand.

“During this COVID-19 crisis more than ever they have provided an essential lifeline for many,” Mr Wallace said.

“I’m glad to see that our local organisations will now get some help in continuing to support families, provide employment pathways for young people and strengthen community resilience.

“Volunteers rarely ask for anything - they just get on with the job. With these grants, the Morrison government is once more giving them a leg up at a difficult time.”

The grants of between $1,000 and $5,000 are being provided in Fisher to help community organisations buy equipment, pay fuel costs, or train volunteers with seven organisations to share more than $25,000 across Glasshouse Country and Maleny News circulation area.

Auskick is back

Contributed by Craig Bales Auskick has restarted back up at the Glasshouse Lions AFL club. There is still time to join this great introduction programme for boys and girls from 5 years of age and up to learn about AFL as well have fun and make new friends.

Once the Auskick programme is completed there is the chance for the kids to move into “Superstars Footy”.

Superstars Footy is fundamentally an extension of Auskick, however it is structured in a similar way to Footy4Fun (Junior Club Footy).

Participants aged 5-7 can participate in game-based activities, leading into modified (non-contact) AFL matches.

In the afternoon Helen Uhlmann was defeated by Wallace 3–11.

It is heartening to see such fierce competition in this division.

Priscilla and Wallace played a practise game on Sunday, June 12 with rain looming to finish 10-all. Ken Barker and Vince Carbery could not resist the lawn and flirted with the imminent rain to play a shortened game where Ken ended up ahead 21–4.

Talkin’ Trades with Alan’s Home & Garden Services Retired builder Alan James found that putting his feet up and easing into a retirement lifestyle was just not his thing. His wife Lyn said that her sprightly and practical Welsh-born husband grew up on a farm and had spent his entire life working hard, so the thought of retiring after 40 years just didn’t suit him.

She said Alan had always been handy and loved to put his skills to good use to help others.

Alan said he was happy to help customers with most small jobs around their home, as well as outdoor garden work like lawn mowing and green waste removal.

“I’ve got a ute and trailer, and I’m always happy to take away the lawn clippings when I mow a lawn so that it looks nice and tidy. I’m also happy to do small handyman jobs and no job is

too small – just call me for a quote and I’ll be happy to help,” Alan said.

Miss Beatrice, the church organist, was in her eighties and had never been married. She was admired for her sweetness and kindness to all.

One afternoon the pastor came to call and she showed him into her quaint sitting room.

She invited him to have a seat while she prepared tea.

As he sat facing her old Hammond organ, the young minister noticed a cut glass bowl sitting on top of it. The bowl was filled with water and in the water floated, of all things, a condom!

When she returned with tea and scones, they began to chat. The pastor tried to stifle his curiosity about the bowl of water and its strange floater but it soon got the better of him and he could no longer resist.

“Miss Beatrice”, he said, “I wonder if you would tell me about this?” pointing to the bowl.

“Oh, yes,” she replied, “Isn’t it wonderful?

“I was walking through the park a few months ago and I found this little package on the ground.

“The directions said to place it on the organ, keep it wet and that it would prevent the spread of disease.

“Do you know I haven’t had COVID-19 or the flu all winter?”
