I DON’T know that anyone has ever said ‘your bookcase is a window into the soul’, but if they did then ours would be screaming ‘help!’.
‘Self help’ to be exact.
I spent last weekend dismantling a big bookcase in our living room - one allowing two rows deep - and rediscovered a bunch of books that never stood a chance of being read to their conclusion, if at all.
Behind the books that I wanted people to think I’d read were titles such as: The 5am Club, Profit First, Keep Going, Stop Listening to the Customer, The Visual MBA, The Pumpkin Plan, Analyzing Company Accounts, 12 Rules For Life and my favourite: How to Get Rich by Donald J Trump. There were dozens more and they’re all going to Lifeline unless you want them (email me).
I’m keeping Trump though. Flicking through ‘How to Get Rich’, there’s an entire chapter titled ‘Play Golf’. The guy’s a genius. Mind you there’s another chapter called ‘Avoid The
Handshake Whenever Possible’, which goes on a winding tale about Japan, fat people and weight loss, but, whatever it takes.
I feel a cathartic sense of relief at ridding myself of these books.
I didn’t pay my mortgage off in five months or start a multi-million dollar property portfolio with $3 and a packet of chewing gum. It’s not me, it’s them. So I’m left with little choice but to pen my own title to be called Millionaire’s Book Club and basically it will be 700 pages of pointed advice summarised as thus: Every time you get the urge to buy a selfhelp book, put away $30. You’ll be a millionaire in no time at all, promise*.

EXECUTIVE DECISION
IT was a positive decision by newly appointed mayor, Rosanna Natoli, to choose the hinterland last week for her first official representation as elected leader of the Sunshine Coast Council.
Was that because the hinterland played a significant part in helping her successful election bid, or that the community really made their feelings of being ignored by council known during campaigning? Maybe it was a bit of both.
Regardless, Cr Natoli was brimming with positivity at the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club’s annual general meeting. Cr Natoli was genuinely enthusiastic, optimistic, clear of baggage and eager to make a change for the better.
She even came with some assurances that the executive would play ball with community groups over some important matters - the hinterland trail and district park namely.
The feeling was it probably fell a bit short on expectations (story p4) but it’s good to know the mayor is listening.
We also have three pages of Anzac Day coverage. Check out our stories as well as the list of services across the hinterland (p8-10).

$5m more for rail line delivery
THE State Government is committing $5 million towards further design and planning of the Beerwah to Caloundra rail line.
The extra funding comes as the Federal Government continues to consider whether to plunge billions in commonwealth funding required to make the project happen.
The state government’s $5m will fund geotechnical investigations between Beerwah and Birtinya.
While the Miles Government has committed $2.75 billion in funding, this is subject to matched funding from the Federal Government.
Infrastructure Minister, Catherine King, said more would be revealed in the upcoming federal budget.
“We’re working our way through the request of the Queensland Government in the upcoming budget, and Infrastructure Australia is assessing the best case for Sunshine Coast direct rail,” she said recently.
Member for Caloundra, Jason Hunt, said the line would put Queensland businesses and employees “front and centre”.
“The rail line will support thousands of jobs during construction, and ongoing operation and maintenance of the line after construction means secure jobs well into the future.”
Baker rises to the occasion
Beerwah cake maker takes home top prize
By Kirra Livingstone
ABOUT five years ago, Beerwah local Prappassorn Savage opened a home bakery after attempting to bake a Peppa Pig cake for her daughter’s birthday.
Since then, she has been slowly growing her business: ‘Sweet Daisy’ (named after her daughter), baking cakes of all shapes, sizes and mind-blowing designs.
Now, the baker is making waves in the international cake scene.
On April 11, Prappassorn won first place for the animal kingdom category and won a gold certificate for standard and quality at the ACADA International Cake Show Australia.
Her cake was inspired by her dog, Rosie, which she also used as inspiration for her application last year.
“Last year I won second
place in the animal category and got a bronze certificate for the standard,” she said.
“I couldn’t believe it when I found out that I won, that my hard work and experience paid off.”
The icing on the cake for Prappassorn, which makes her business stand out from the rest, is the Pandan Chiffon cakes she bakes.
This is a traditional Thai cake made from the plant Pandan, which gives the cake a natural sweetness, fluffy texture and a green inside.
With a background in hospitality since moving to Australia about ten years ago, it was a no-brainer to go into the sweeter side of the industry.
“I have worked all around the hinterland in Thai restaurants, I have worked in Mooloolah, and even here in Beerwah,” she said.
had a rough understanding of what goes into it, especially since I would make Thai desserts when I was working in restaurants.”
She is based in Beerwah, and when she decided to open a baking business, she invested into it by purchasing a mobile kitchen trailer, which is set up on Beerwah Parade.
“Our house isn’t big enough for me to do all my baking and hold all my tools, store my cakes and so on, so hopefully one day the aim is to rebuild our home, and build a bigger
and work in, and I’m also looking at buying some more baking machines to cakes easier,” she said. Congratulations, Prappassorn!

Free public Wi-Fi in Beerwah
THE Sunshine Coast Council has implemented free public Wi-Fi at the Beerwah Community Hall on April 16, creating several benefits for the community.
Key advantages for the Beerwah community includes enhanced connectivity, improved engagement, information access, promoting digital inclusion, and attracting events and programs.
Having free public Wi-Fi at the Hall will allow ease in internet usage for visitors, attendees, and community groups.
This latest installation will also achieve the goal to make Beerwah Community Hall a vibrant and inclusive space for the town.
POLICE were called to a construction site near Maleny last week after about 20 residents blocked access to the property in protest over a development. As reported in GC&M News (16 April), residents have become increasingly concerned at the progress of the development at 960 Bald Knob Road, claiming earthworks are creating potential hazards, while
traffic control issues were also raised following an incident earlier in the week. Before 8am Friday morning (April 19), a group of residents descended on the site, parking a vehicle across the driveway to block access. Police said they responded “to a disturbance at a construction site on Bald Knob Road, Bald Knob at around 8am today, April 19”. “Upon arrival, police
took up with a group of people outside the address,” a Police spokesperson said.
“A vehicle was parked across the driveway to the construction site. The owner of this vehicle moved the vehicle when asked.
“No official complaints have been made.”
Property owner, Gilad Bakas, said he was looking to create the “first privatelyowned public park on the
Sunshine Coast”.
“I feel it’s almost an obligation to share this (view) with the public,” he said. “We are creating level areas for car parks, picnic areas, and viewing platforms to appreciate the view.”
“A ‘park’ is Accepted Development under the planning scheme and as such no council approval is required.” A Sunshine

been announced and there’s no time to waste to nominate your favourite business and employee across the hinterland.
Glasshouse MP, Andrew Powell, said it was an exceptional line-up of entrepreneurial talent that underscores the valuable role small businesses play in the community.
A business and employee in each region with the most votes will pick up a Silver Glassie, the Bronze Glassie will be selected by the Chamber Presidents while the Gold Glassie is chosen by Mr Powell. No pressure but this year GC&M News as well as uber-talented designer Sharon King have been nominated. Vote at andrewpowell. com.au/glassies/ Voting closes May 13.
Police called to park block
Coast Council spokesperson earlier confirmed that the development did not require approval. Council officers had investigated complaints and found no laws were being broken. “Council officers will continue to monitor the work being carried out,” the spokesperson said.
Mr Bakas said that, weather depending, the park should be complete in
six months.
“(I want) to share the beauty of this property with as many people as possible, while keeping the experience pleasant and relaxing, and without causing interference or nuisance to the neighbours and the community”. Access to the park would initally be free while the owner assessed “how people interact with the park”.

Upgrades set for Steve Irwin Way
THE Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) has announced significant upgrades to Steve Irwin Way, aiming to improve safety and accessibility for residents and visitors alike. Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell, has welcomed the news, highlighting its potential positive impact on the local area.
The planned upgrades include widening the road to accommodate wide centre line treatment and shoulder widening, along with the addition of dedicated left and right turn lanes at Kings Road.
Furthermore, the project will create dedicated entry and exit points, formalised parking, and turning lanes at the roadside shops near Glass House Mountains.
“The coffee store, antiquities shop, and grocery/nursery shack on Steve Irwin Way are of great interest to locals and tourists alike,” said Mr. Powell.
“At any time of day when driving past, you will notice a long line of parked cars and often have to wait for someone turning into or out of the lane of shops there.”
“These upgrades are going to make a serious difference to safety and drive even more customers to the local shops,” he added.
Delegation drawn to defend local mountains
Arnhem land delegation decends on hinterland
By Sonia Isaacs
A 12-person strong Arnhem Land delegation is heading to the Glass House Mountains to campaign against the proposed Hanson quarry expansion.
The group will be meeting with local residents, community members and local elders on Sunday April 28 as part of a ticketed event organised by Save Our Glasshouse Mountains (SOGHM).
The gathering is aimed at raising awareness about the controversial issue.
Councillors and the Mayor have been invited to a separate meeting on Monday April 29, regarding the quarry and its effect on the Mountains.
Event co-organiser, Megan Standring, said the April 28 event was being sponsored by SOGHM with all proceeds covering the cost of bringing the 12-person delegation out to the Sunshine Coast, with any additional funds being put back into the SOGHM campaign. She said approximately 75 tickets had already been sold.
Tickets range in price from
free for under 16s to $123 for adults, including lunch.
The Arnhem delegation includes Aboriginal elder Djinang man, Don Weluk and Walpiri desert woman Jenny Timms, who will be raising awareness about traditional ways and culture, and the significance of ‘keeping Country sacred’ in contemporary society.
Ms Standring said the Arnhem land delegation had been inextricably drawn to visit the Glass House Mountains because of deeply-held concerns that the traditionally sacred land was under threat.
Ms Standring said Don and his family were concerned that people were not “listening to Country”, and that the traditional lore surrounding the protection of sacred sites was not being upheld.
“Traditional lore down here is being diluted because people have not protected these sacred sites,” she said.
“Arnhem Land elder, Don Weluk, and his delegation group have been compelled to come to our
region to share their deep understanding of culture, and the crucial importance of protecting our sacred sites,” said Megan.
The invitation to Sunshine Coast Councillors and the Mayor to meet with the Arnhem Land elders and local traditional custodians and elders the following day was specfically organised to raise awareness of the cultural significance of the Mountains, and the impact of the quarry.
“The expansion plans by Hanson poses significant concerns for our community,” she said.
“That’s especially given its location in the heart of the National Heritage, culturally-rich Glass House Mountains and its proximity to the township.”
Ms Standring added that the proposed meeting with council representatives would allow the elders and locals to share the significance of preserving culturally significant sites.
“We hope this meeting will empower our local councillors to make culturally
informed decisions when representing their community,” she said.
The Arnhem Land elders will be welcomed by local elders with Kabi Kabi and Jinibara connection, with Uncle Alan Parsons, Aunty Zeitha Murphy and Aunty Dinawan amongst others expected to be in attendance.
It is understood Hanson Quarry recently met with representatives of Jinibara People Aboriginal Corporation (JPAC), native title holders of the land surrounding the quarry site. When asked for comment by GC&M News regarding attendance and outcomes of the meeting, a Hanson spokesperson
declined to answer specific questions.
“We continue to have conversations with the relevant stakeholders in our community and encourage others to connect with us directly to answer any questions they may have,” the Hanson spokesperson said. Over 100 submissions have been lodged in just over a week.

New mayor commits to Maleny park and path
By Mitch Gaynor
THE Sunshine Coast Council has committed to not planting out an increasingly popular Maleny walking trail and will also begin public consultation for a new district park.
New off-leash dog zones were also under consideration as part of a suite of announcements made by new mayor Rosanna Natoli when she addressed the Maleny District Sport and Recreation Club (MDSRC)
AGM last Thursday (April 18).
Cr Natoli chose the hinterland to mark her first official representation as mayor, saying she had heard loud and clear that the hinterland had felt abandoned.
Cr Natoli announced community consultation for a new district park, including an off area, would begin in July.
“The lack of progress on the establishment of a district park has led to some community concern,” Cr Natoli told the MDSRC.
“But I can announce now that consultation, planning and design will continue over stages starting
from July. The scope of this project includes the planning and design for a new dog exercise area in the precinct.”

Timber harvesting for homes
HQPlantations to commence mature forest harvesting around Wild Horse Mountain
OVER the next 12 months, HQPlantations will commence harvesting mature plantation forest around Wild Horse Mountain in Beerburrum East State Forest.
HQP stakeholder engagement manager, Stephanie Hunt, said within the harvesting area, the plantation trees were mostly 28-year-old Southern Pines.
“This type of tree has been specifically developed for the Queensland climate and predominantly used to make structural timber for local house construction,” she said.
However, visitors should be prepared for short delays for traffic control on some occasions. Special arrangements will be made for affected local residents.
“HQP harvests around 3% to 5% of its plantations each year, ensuring a sustainable and continuous supply of timber to local industry, and everything harvested is replanted for future generations,” Ms Hunt said.
While some parts of the plantation forest in this area will be closed for public safety during forest operations, access to the Wild Horse Mountain lookout will be maintained.
HQP is also planning to harvest several hardwood
plantations in Beerburrum East, Beerburrum West and Peachester State Forests and on HQP’s private property, commencing mid 2024.
There are seven hardwood plantations scheduled for harvesting, ranging in size from 2 to 76 hectares, totalling 148 hectares.
Following harvest, the compartments will be replanted with Southern Pine to supply renewable timber for the construction of Queensland homes from sustainable materials.
HQP does not harvest native forest and any native forest buffers will continue to be protected.
Collaborative community approach plants 70,000 trees
A MAJOR land care and water quality project has seen more than 70,000 native trees planted on the shores of Lake Baroon.
Seqwater and its longstanding catchment partner Lake Baroon Catchment Care Group (LBCCG), reached the milestone after three years of planning and planting to rehabilitate the ‘Bunya Block’, a 125-hectare former beef property adjacent to the lake. The project is minimising erosion and sediment run-off into Lake Baroon, also known as Baroon Pocket Dam. The planted
trees, are currently up to one metre tall and growing vigorously, providing water catchment benefits as well as supporting native habitat corridors.
Seqwater and community group, the Lake Baroon Catchment Care Group have worked together for many years delivering on-theground land care projects and education programs for one of the Sunshine Coast’s most important water supplies.
Over the past decade, Seqwater has invested over $7 million into its catchment partnership program in the
Lake Baroon catchment.
A total of 158,000 trees have been planted across the catchment, which spans 7,400 hectares across the Blackall Ranges. Catchment projects, including tree planting, weed control, erosion repair, livestock fencing and on-farm land care improvements, help stabilise soil and minimise sedimentation and agricultural run-off into the dam, which in turn reduces the need and cost of excessive water treatment.
These projects are made possible through the
ongoing support of local landholders and farming communities.
Lake Baroon Catchment Care Group President, Peter Stevens said Seqwater and LBCCG had been working together for over 20 years and held a shared commitment to sustainable catchment management.
“For the Bunya Block, we’ve been nurturing trees planted just over two years ago and have seen this native tree corridor grow significantly in this time, assisting in the stabilization of multiple unstable hillslopes.”

Women’s WWII medals discovered
Family shares story of grandmother’s medals
Contributed by Elaine Reeves
ONLY recently my mother mentioned that her mother (my grandmother) had ‘received medals during the War’. I was a bit mystified as to what she meant until she produced these two badges (which I had never seen before!).

For active service abroad during the Second World War, a single badge was issued to the nearest female relative of members of the RAN, the Australian Imperial Force (including members of the Australian Army Nursing Service), and the Royal Australian Air Force. Stars were displayed on a bar suspended below the badge represented the number of relatives involved in the war effort.
The badge showed a map of Australia and the words “To The Women of Australia”.
The Mothers’ and Widows’ badge of the Second World War was issued to the mother and/or widow of a member of the RAN, AIF (including the Australian Army Nursing Service), Citizen Military Forces, or Royal Australian Air Force who was killed in action or died of wounds or other causes as a result of their
The badge was round and silver-coloured. The obverse shows a raised image of a woman and part of a laurel wreath with the words ‘For Australia’ in raised letters. Suspended by two securing rings from the bottom of the badge is a flat rectangular bar where stars were added.
Obviously, these badges relate to my mother’s brother who enlisted in the RAAF in 1940 for Aircrew training as a Wireless Operator and Air Gunner. He trained in Australia, Canada

But after he was involved in three Catalina crashes, he decided to bow out of the war.
Lawrie died 39 years ago at 68 years old, and his son, Greg Howard, who is also a member of the Beerwah Lions Club, has kept an extensive collection of his
drawings and pictures of his father in the war.
Greg said it was important to preserve the collection as it has a rich history dating back to 1939, with his father providing commentary through his drawings.
“He was a very good drawer, with the Catalinas they would have nothing to do, so they would sit around pen to paper type of thing which he was very good at, but I’m hopeless at. It didn’t rub off on me,” he said.
“They are very unique drawings, my daughters
kept on saying don’t you get rid of them because they are treasures for the family and preserving history.”
He added that his father was a good man, and his life was fulfilling with his fair share of ups and downs.
“My father got kicked out of home at 20, so
he hitchhiked all the way to Cairns to work up there, and once the war broke out he got into mechanics and then the Catalinas,” Greg said.
“He used to love flying, he was in Cairns for many years, but after three big plane crashes that was enough for him, to survive all three was amazing.”
His son described his father as a jackaroo who was a very hands on, a handy man who could do anything mechanical, and that he had a good life.

PROBUS is flourishing. In fact, we are still in shock after welcoming seven new, or prospective new members, at the last meeting.
Probus was founded by retiring Rotarians who felt the need for companionship and mental stimulation of their peers in retirement. The club was first formed in the United Kingdom in 1965 and was given the name, PROBUS (Pro for professional and bus for business); the first club in Australia was formed in Sydney in 1976.
The role of Probus today is the same as it was nearly fifty years ago. The core values are exactly the same as they were then, companionship and mental stimulation. This is wrapped up in our motto which is ‘Fun, Friendship and Fellowship’.

Beerwah couple celebrate 70th
By Sonia Isaacs
BONNY and Trevor Breitkreutz celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary at a special family lunch at the Caboolture Sundowner Hotel last Saturday, April
While reaching a platinum anniversary is a momentous milestone for most people, what is also noteworthy is that all four original members of the 1954 wedding party are still alive today.
Last Saturday, 92 year old Bonny, 95 year old Trevor, Bonny’s brother Colin (aged 95)and Trevor’s sister Marj (aged 88) all reunited ahead of the April 24 anniversary.
Also at the function was the couple’s five children; Gregory, Peter, Ann, David and Margaret. They also
have six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Speaking with GC&M News, Bonny said she still remembered everything about her wedding day, even down to the time the couple were married (11am) and the priest who married them (Rev. Jack Kruger). The couple were married at the Goomeri Anglican Church the same year the young Queen Elizabeth came to Australia. Thinking back to how they first met, Bonny said she remembered that when she was about 17, Trevor used to work at the local sawmill, and he would always give her a wave on his way home. From there a friendship flourished from seeing each other at the local monthly
dances. Bonny said she remembered Trevor being a ‘very good dancer’. She said when they fi stepping out together she would have to look up the spelling of his ‘complicated’ surname in the local phonebook.

LJ Hooker team expands business into Beerwah
By Sonia Isaacs
WITH the hinterland property market continuing to gain huge amounts of traction, the team behind the Sunshine Coast’s LJ Hooker Caloundra and Aura are thrilled to have now expanded their business into Beerwah.
With their official opening on Friday April 19, the new office located next to the entrance to Woolworths in Beerwah Marketplace is well positioned to not only boost visibility of their brand, but attract a large amount of passerby interest.
The new office will be led by selling principal Jack Cornford and Jamie O’Brien, with support from Paul and Jo O’Brien.
Also on board is highly respected local agent Theo Grigoriou, whose long standing connections and knowledge in the area are second to none.
Mr Cornford said he was delighted to be part of the team returning to Beerwah, and was pleased to be working with such an experienced, well supported team that not only knew the local area well, but could also tap into the property groups experience with the coastal market to benefit both buyers and sellers.
Opening

Jack Cornford
He said the establishment of the new Beerwah office was also somewhat of a homecoming for Mr O’Brien, who had previously operated an agency in the community for more than a decade.
“Between Paul and Theo, there would be almost 50 years of hinterland property sales experience which is an incredible amount of knowledge to bring to the table,” Mr Cornford said.
He said while the growth in the hinterland area had been phenomenal in recent years, towns like Beerwah still retained a strong
“Being located in such a busy retail hub, not only for Beerwah, but the surrounding hinterland towns, is ideal. We’ve already seen between 5001000 people a day walk past our office so this additional exposure of having a more traditional shopfront with property cards in the window is fantastic, and compliments our modern online sales solutions well,” he said.

SAID IT.... You
Let council loose
I WOULD like to voice my disappointment about the recent announcement by Sunshine Council to close the public toilets at Glass House due to Council not being able to fund the cost of cleaning and maintenance of the toilet block. These toilets are situated in the heart of the shopping complex and public park area. In my opinion the toilet block is an essential service for all those workers and visitors as well as the children playing in the park area, adjacent to the toilet block.
The Sunshine Council made the comment that there is another set of toilets a short distance away. Yes, there is, but then one must deal with the speed and high volume of cars which come in and out of the roundabout entrance to the shopping centre as well as those cars travelling at quite a speed around the corner racing for the lights at Glass House intersection. Not ideal for children and others trying to cross a busy road to get to the toilets by the tourist information centre.
This is fraught with danger. Very disappointed in the Sunshine Council by dropping their service to these public toilets at Glass House Mountains. These toilets have a very high volume of use by the Glass House community and
visitors. Once again those living in the outer suburbs, which are growing at a very fast rate, as against those living in the seaside suburbs do not receive the same amount of care and attention from Council. Council is happy to take the rates and increase the rates, by stealth, when Council discontinued the discount for “Pay Early” in August 2021. If it is not the duty of the Council to maintain the parks and public toilet, then who’s duty is it ? Not a Glass House happy Chappy over this issue.

Follow the science
PETER Milton’s letter (You Said It) 9 April 2024, is a compilation of all the “Consensus Climate Science” we have been fed since the United Nations IPCC was formed in 1988. Most of it is an argument from authority and contains little empirical evidence that human industrial CO₂ emissions are causing dangerous global warming and weather disasters. Science is not done by consensus but by observation, research, hypothesis, analysis and conclusions.
Mr Milton should search YouTube and watch the new video “Climate The Movie”
where several prominent scientists with expertise in climate fields explain why there is no so-called “Climate Crisis” and why certain economic elites are pushing western governments to get rid of our efficient fossil fuel based economies. I recommend this movie to all undecided readers.
The NOAA admits that the Pacific Ocean El Niño and La Niña weather phenomena are the “Gorillas” of our climate system and control much of our weather.
After the 1997/98 El Niño, fossil fuel CO₂ emissions increased by 46.3 per cent and atmospheric CO₂ rose from 364 ppm to 402 ppm in 18 years but there was no global warming until the 2015/16 El Niño caused a jump of 0.23 degrees C. Why didn’t the CO₂ increase cause warming during
those 18 years? A graph of monthly atmospheric CO₂ changes plotted against monthly sea surface temperature anomalies shows that CO₂ changes closely follow ocean temperatures up and down but lag behind temperature by up to a year. As oceans warm they emit large amounts of CO₂ and atmospheric CO₂ increases. Changes in human industrial CO₂ emissions do not correspond to changes in atmospheric CO₂. Sel Hopley Maleny
Free fuel is the fire PETER Milton (GC News 9 April) gave a comprehensive survey of the state of play in climate science in response to Sel Hopley’s (26 March) assault. It is worth looking at just how weak Sel’s speculations were.
He resurrects the old furphy about C02 lagging temperature and argues that CO2 cannot be the cause of the warming. This was true for exiting the last ice age 20,000 years ago. Every scientist that I know thinks that we exited the last ice age because of changes in the earth’s tilt and orbit which warmed the northern hemisphere land mass. Rising CO2 was a secondary effect. The furphy tries to conclude that CO2 never causes warming which is false logic. Basic physics tells us that we are on track to cook our civilization if we dig up fossil fuels and put the carbon back into the air. This ice age furphy was aired on the BBC in 2007 and although it was quickly debunked, climate deniers have resurrected it repeatedly.
Sel seems to think that the rising CO2 is coming from a warming ocean. The idea is not a scientific theory but an armwave by an incoherent blogger on Facebook in 2022. If the ocean were releasing CO2 it would get more alkaline but instead the ocean is getting more acid by absorbing CO2. There is no room for debate.
Could the observed ocean heating be being caused by submarine volcanos? No. There is no evidence for
Seems like cost of living is a real suck
I KNEW that we were all going to hell in a handbasket, but to wake up the other day and find that some little grub had tried to siphon the petrol out of my fuel tank, well we might as well have arrived.
Don’t they read the news?
Stupid question.
Petrol prices are probably as good as they’re going to get for a few months given how hot and heavy the Middle East is getting. If ever there’s an argument for electric cars, it’s finding my petrol cap has been jimmied in the dead of night.
CAN’T STOP PROGRESS
Suddenly everyone’s interested in this bloody quarry.
If I were a submissionwriting kind of croc, which I’m not, I’d be less breathless about the
environment and tourism and more focused on the rather large increase in the number of trucks that will be travelling past homes and schools.
What is the compensation to the local community for that?
FAMILY TIES
ONE of the kids was in a car accident the other day. We found out via a breathless text - a sure
sign it wasn’t that badand aside from failing to respond with desperate concern, it’s now my fault that she has to deal with the aftermath. “I’ve got better things to do. You do it,” she said when told when and where it had to be taken for an assessment. Ummm, that’s not how it works. Anyway I did it. Sometimes I just don’t have the energy to argue.
increasing volcanism and any way, submarine volcanos would heat the deep ocean and not the surface where the heating is actually happening.
Climate scientists have been vocal about climate change since at least 1988, but people seem to vote mostly for right-wing governments that promise unrestrained capitalism.
A century of burning fossil fuels has been a wonderful bonanza of cheap energy. It turns out that this ‘free’ lunch will now have to be paid for – mostly by our descendants.
At the next election I expect the Murdoch press will stir our outrage with stories about migrants and the cost of utes―anything to distract us from taking seriously the fate of our grandchildren and their grandchildren. Is there anything more important?

Hope we’re online
WHO remembers the schemozzle around the internet/communications/ Telstra issues regarding ATM’s/money last year at the Wood Expo and Agricultural shows? Seeing as cash is still king, it might be an idea if people were encouraged to bring a bit of cash to alleviate the problem, as I don’t think the situation has improved.

TAURUS
APRIL 21 – MAY 20
Happy birthday Taurus, as the Sun joins genial Jupiter for its final month in your sign. Yes, Uranus, that agent of disarray, is also in Taurus dismantling whatever isn’t working to make room for what might be a better fit for current conditions, so get busy making practical magic.

JULY 23 – AUGUST 23
If your mojo’s been in slow-mo during Mercury’s reversal, the silicate planet’s forward move powers this week to get stuff done. Doors open, people smile more, your ideas are met with a warmer reception, and you can have a conversation without causing offence by not knowing someone’s preferred pronoun.
CANCER
JUNE 22 - JULY 22
The sign of Cancer is ruled by the moon, and when April’s forensic full moon shines her midweek high beams of mystery and intrigue, you can decide to be either furious or curious. Frightened or excited. Confused or enthused. Reactive or proactive. As always, the choice is yours.

Horoscopes WEEK BEGINNING APRIL 23
You’re entitled to your strong beliefs, but the world at large isn’t under any obligation to agree with them. With four planets in fixed signs like your own, this week’s mantra is Stay Flexible. Afford others the respect that you would want for yourself, even if you think it’s undeserved.
VIRGO
AUGUST 24 – SEPTEMBER 22
This week’s powerful full moon comes with the potential for deep healing, so devote some time, as much as possible, even the whole week, to acknowledging yourself for all your hard work, dedication to duty, practical savvy and whatever other sterling Virgo virtues may be relevant.

Your celestial muse, Venus, the pleasure planet, is particularly drawn during the next few weeks to indulging her appetite for earthly delights, never mind the consequences. Which do have a pesky way of showing up, however, so try to balance your love of beautiful things with sensible spending.

This week’s full moon in Scorpio, also known as a blood moon, is a profoundly healing time to schedule deep and meaningful conversations with nearest and dearest. Plus, it’s Scorpio’s personal annual date to celebrate your loyal spirit, your sexy self, your evolving life path.

The majority of planets are currently in fixed signs, like Aquarius, but having too fixed a vision of how you want things to work out isn’t recommended this week. Your guiding planet, Uranus the Changemaker, is busy disrupting business as usual, so stay tuned for its flashes of crazy inspiration.
In the physical body, Saturn rules the skeletal structure which holds and protects our soft, pliable organs, allowing them to move freely. Similarly, the principles, practices, rules and routines of Saturn in your sign are a guiding key to managing this week’s random surprises and unexpected news.

Caloundra Music Festival
CALOUNDRA Music Festival (CMF) has been cancelled for 2024.
Organisers say the decision to can the October festival was made due to rising operating costs and costof-living pressures on event ticket sales.
CMF joins a growing list of major music festivals across Australia that have been cancelled this year.
Sunshine Coast Council made the announcement last Tuesday April 16, stating CMF, like many other festivals, had experienced rising operating costs, including event infrastructure, production, security, policing, labour/ crew costs, travel/ transport, accommodation and others.
“Additionally, the impact of higher interest rates, rent, fuel, power and food costs on household budgets means patrons have less disposable income for festival tickets and other entertainment,” a Council spokesperson said. There are hopes of a return in 2025 if conditions improve.
New exhibition to shine a light on aquatic sports
Landsborough Museum showcases innovative new sports exhibition
By Sonia Isaacs
KICKING off in 2024, ‘Grassroots to Glory’ is an exciting new cultural heritage initiative set to showcase an annual exhibition focused on local sporting history.
This innovative project will span the next eight years in the lead up to the 2032 Olympics.
Each year will highlight a specific area of sport, collecting objects and stories from across the Sunshine Coast region.
From grassroots sporting events to professional competitions, social sport to elite athletes, the series of annual exhibitions will ensure every aspect of sport on the Sunshine Coast will be celebrated.
The inagural exhibition and accompanying digital story at Landsborough Museum will shine a light on the wonderful world of aquatic sports.
Kids build at wood expo
GET ready for an unforgettable day at Maleny Wood Expo, May 4-6. Wood - Mizer offers kids the opportunity to build a tree house for our native animals.
This hands-on project is FREE and will not only keep the youngsters engaged, but also teach them about the environment.
From water skiing to surfing, to nippers and outrigging, the exhibition is a celebration of the wonder of being wet.
Museum Officer, Hayley Rowan, said The Cultural Heritage Team were excited for the community to engage with the Grassroots
to Glory exhibition at Landsborough Museum.
“We are excited for the community to learn all about aquatic sport on the Sunshine Coast. The generosity of the clubs and people involved has been inspiring, and they are looking forward to sharing their stories and objects with everyone,” Ms Rowan said.
The exhibition coincides with the 2024 Australian Surf Life Saving Championships (13-21 April), hosted on the Sunshine Coast.
With over 6000 volunteer surf lifesavers from around the country expected to attend, ‘The Aussies’ is the pinnacle event on the Australian surf lifesaving calendar.
Visitors can enjoy memorabilia, photos and artefacts that showcase the region’s rich water sport heritage and hear from champions of local water sport as they recount their tales from the deep and the shallows.
The exhibition runs from Friday April 19 through to Sunday September 8.
Landsborough Museum is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 3pm. Closed public holidays. Entry is free.

Cycling action plan gives push start for bike riding
THE second round of the Government’s Bike Riding Encouragement Program Community Grants is now open.
The grants aim to encourage fresh ideas and different ways to get more Queenslanders riding bikes for transport, recreation, and wellbeing.
Up to $25,000 is available for community groups, not-for-profit and for-profit organisations, and local governments partnering with a community organisation, to deliver projects and events that encourage
more bike riding. Eligible organisations can apply for funding under two streams: the first stream will support organisations to deliver local, grassroots events and activities that address communityspecific challenges and opportunities for bike riding.
The second stream will support organisations to start or progress an innovative idea, initiative, or concept to encourage more people to ride a bike in Queensland.
The Bike Riding Encouragement Program Community Grants are one of 49 actions the current Government is progressing through the Queensland Cycling Action Plan 2023–2025 to achieve its vision for more cycling, more often. For more information on the grants and to apply, visit www.tmr.qld.gov.au/ bikeridinggrants.

As this calendar is a major fund-raiser providing approximately $9000 for the Rotary Club, it allows us to help many needy projects both local and overseas. Another reason the calendar is a great fundraiser is the very positive support from our local advertisers for which we are grateful.
THE ever-popular Maleny Rotary Calendar Photo competition is up and running and the call is out for entries for the 2025 calendar. This competition is proving more popular each year with 98 entries for the 2024 calendar. Entry forms are available from the Maleny Newsagency, with the closing date for entries on Saturday, June 7. The 2024 winner was Glenn Ingham with a stunning photo of the Glasshouse Mountains taken from One Tree Hill, followed by Kay Eastmure’s Morning Vista second and Rita Aitken’s Tawny Frogmouths third.

World Immunisation Week: Rotary’s Fight Against Polio
APRIL 24th marks the beginning of “World Immunisation Week,” focusing on combating the poliovirus, a primary target of global health initiatives.
Since 1978, Rotary International has been at the forefront of the fight against polio, setting ambitious goals for a poliofree world. Initiatives like “Polio Plus” in 1985 and co-founding the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988 underscore Rotary’s commitment.
This year, significant milestones include the 50th anniversary of the Expanded Program on Immunisation, ensuring equitable vaccine access, and the 30th and 10th anniversaries of the WHO declaring the Americas and South-East Asia regions polio-free respectively.
Rotary’s contributions to polio research have exceeded $2.1 billion since 1978, with $100 million donated last year alone. These funds, raised globally
through volunteer efforts, are matched by the Gates Foundation since 2007, totalling $200 million in 2023.
While wild poliovirus type 1 persists in only Pakistan and Afghanistan as of 2022, the WHO remains optimistic about global eradication by 2024.
For more information on Rotary’s international polio or malaria projects, contact the local Rotary Club of Maleny at secretary. maleny@rotary9620.org.

Walk As One Are you safe at home? session
IN Christianity much is made of the metaphor of the good Shepherd. The beautiful vulnerability of sheep and their strong herding instinct and of sheep is paired with the image of the shepherd who leads by walking ahead. Sheep would prefer not go anywhere unless there is another first testing out the path so a good shepherd will walk ahead of themdemonstrating the integrity of the path.
I use the word ‘integrity’ rather than ‘safety’ because while the way of the shepherd will (I imagine) preference physical safety, the way of faith will often move through places of darkness, risk and grief before arriving at the place of spiritual rest and restoration (Ps23.) Not unlike a labyrinth, whose twists and turns leave us metaphorically lost and disorientated at times, the message is that although the world around us (and in us) will change in difficult ways, this is a path that will hold you. Life is ultimately a sacred journey and what is asked of us is to take the next step, to keep following the way.
There are many good reasons to avoid organised religion these days and I’d be lying if I didn’t admit to days when I wonder why I remain. But then I look at the violence in the news and the shocking fragility of life and realise I need some tools for this journey.
I need stories of origin that shape me as a person of purpose, courage and hope. I need practices that help me carry the inevitable grief as well as provoke me to recognise, cherish and protect the sacred in every face and expression of life. Perhaps above all things I need companions on the road - a community of soul friends that will not abandon me as everyday I struggle to figure out the next faithful step. In a coincidence of the Anglican lectionary, the metaphor of the way of the good shepherd always comes to us in proximity to World Labyrinth Day (May 4th), a day in which thousands across the world take part in a united, walking meditation for world peace. ‘Walk at One As One’ is the simple, peaceloving message. It seems like such a small thing, but
it helps to know that I have ‘soul-friends’ all over the world walking gently and intentionally on this day for the sake of each other.
I wish there was an annual day of beating all the swords to plowshares, but I am endlessly encouraged that there is a sacred community of us across the globe that believe in a vision of earth as in heaven in which ‘nation will no longer rise up against nation’ (Is 2.4) and that will not rest in calling out for justice, gentleness and humility (Mh 6.8).
So I keep showing up on this path knowing I do not worry or walk alone. Knowing that in a conflicted world, every peace-making step we take, however small, is both much needed, and worth it.

THE Speak Up Now – Stop Domestic & Family Violence group in collaboration with the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre is holding an ‘Are You Safe At Home’ information session on Thursday May 9, 2024 as part of its DV Prevention Month activities.
‘Are You Safe At Home’ day is an annual event which commenced in Victoria and is an initiative from the ‘Safe and Equal’ organisation.
Val France from the Speak Up Now group believes this is an important way to start a conversation with anyone who feels they may be experiencing family violence, while also letting the person know that if they are experiencing abuse that they do not have to face this alone.
“Oft want to do something to help but they just don’t know the right way to start the conversation. Therefore, they choose to do
nothing. Alternatively, someone experiencing family violence may not know where they can go for help and don’t feel able to discuss this with friends, family, or colleagues,” she said
“The ‘Are You Safe At Home’ website (www. areyousafeathome.org. au) has many helpful tips,
friend, family member, or colleague to support them on their journey to safety.
Just by asking, listening, and believing, you can have an enormous impact on someone’s journey to safety,” Ms France said.
“This is the first of what we hope to be an annual information session.

WASTE MATTERS
Clothing Waste
DID you know that the average Australian buys 27kg of new clothing every year and discards 23kg? That’s about 6,000kg of clothing ending up in landfill every 10 minutes. The clothing industry creates waste and pollution, which impacts local communities, land and waterways, and is responsible for up to 10% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. The industry relies heavily on fossil fuels,
other chemicals and water. In Australia, two-thirds of clothing is made from synthetic fibres, mostly derived from petroleum, and it takes about 2,700 litres of water to make just one cotton t-shirt. Many big brands are making huge profits from producing cheap clothing, while keeping garment workers in poverty. Learn about worker exploitation in the clothing industry on Oxfam’s website and sign the ‘What She Makes’ pledge.
Here are some ways to reduce clothing waste:
• Buy less clothing.
• Reuse and repair what you have.
• Buy from op shops rather than buying new.
• If buying new, chose ethical and sustainable clothing brands.
• Avoid cheap clothing brands and synthetics that don’t last.
• Donate clothing (in good condition) to op shops.

They Walk Among Us! .....
I WAS at the checkout of a local Woolworths.
The cashier rang up $46.64 charges.
I gave her a fifty dollar bill. She gave me back $46.64.
I gave the money back to her and told her that she had made a mistake in MY favour.
She became indignant and informed me she was educated and knew what she was doing, and she returned the money again.
I gave her the money back -- same scenario!
I departed the store with the $46.64. ***
While looking at a house, my brother asked the real estate agent which direction was north; because, he explained, he didn’t want the sun waking him up every morning.
She asked, “Does the sun rise in the north?”
When my brother explained that the sun rises
in the East, and has for sometime; she shook her head and said, “Oh I don’t keep up with all that stuff.”
***
I walked into a Starbucks with a buy-one-get-one-free coupon for a Grande Latte.
I handed it to the girl and she looked over at a little chalkboard that said ‘buy one-get one free.’
“They’re already buy-oneget-one-free,” she said, “so I guess they’re both free.”
She handed me my free lattes, and I walked out the door.
***
One day I was walking down the beach with some friends, when one of them shouted, “Look at that dead bird!”
Someone looked up at the sky and asked, “Where?”
***
My sister has a lifesaving tool in her car designed to cut through a seat belt if she gets trapped. She keeps it in the trunk.

THE alternate stroke doubles competition was played in Caloundra last weekend. Senior members of the Range Croquet Club, Sarah Widin and Donna Manning officiated with Sarah acting as tournament manager and Donna refereeing. Refereeing would have been a daunting task with Liz Fleming,
Howard Williams and Sam Oaten from Caloundra.
Our Sunday afternoon play this week was washed out. Fortunately, we had been able to play on Thursday, with Dianne Horsman and David Kerr up against Donna Manning. The scores were 16 each, with Donna generously sharing her experience of strategy and technique. In the other game Wallace Roy was impressive at 18 with Sarah and Nick Cram making 15. players should be on the Lochwood match against in the distance approaching his yellow ball, to hit the

Maleny completes iconic first hole rebuild
Contributed by Richard Owen MEMBERS and visitors alike have been rejoicing since Maleny Golf Club finished rebuilding the treacherous green on its picturesque opening hole which had a fearsome reputation for ruining otherwise good rounds.
Arguably one of the most iconic holes on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, the remodelled 1st, will be a signature hole at Maleny and a spectacular introduction to a unique golfing experience.
Prior to reconstruction, the 117m Par 3 hole was the second toughest at Maleny due to a fierce back-to-front slope of around four per cent - causing well placed tee shots to roll off the green and down over a onemetre-high, dry-rock wall.
Even former US Masters Champion and PGA tour pro Adam Scott carded a double bogie when he first attacked the hole with a wedge after it opened for play in February 2020.
The club’s General Manager Stephen Porter said many a good golfer had since skipped away smiling if they had managed to match or better Scott’s effort that day!
“Golf really should be about rewarding good
shots, but unfortunately there was rarely any reward on this hole as it was thenunless you aced it!” Porter quipped. “First impressions when playing the course could therefore have been somewhat demoralising.”
So last year the Board decided to literally “level the playing field” by creating a back-up 19th hole and rebuilding the green on the 1st Hole to reduce the fall to about one per cent.
The project began in late 2023 and the 1st Hole was brought back into play last Wednesday. The final combined cost of the two new holes was around $60,000.
Mr Porter said course Superintendent Mick
McCombe and his team deserved high praise as the work was mostly done in-house to a very high standard amid challenging weather conditions – saving the club around $50,000. The additional hole, which includes a revetted bunker and a double green playable from two directions, will give the club future flexibility to maintain an 18-hole playing experience while closing any other hole on the course for maintenance work. Well Played Maleny!

Gardening Expo grows big
40,000 expected to enjoy the expanded four-day gardening extravaganza in July
NATIONAL Gardening Day on 14 April marked just 12 weeks until the start of one of Australia’s most-loved gardening events, and this year, the Queensland Garden Expo is gearing up to celebrate its 40th anniversary with a spectacular four-day affair from 4-7 July on the picturesque Sunshine Coast.
The Nambour Showgrounds will once again host more than 40,000 visitors at the seven-hectare immersive gardening experience with this year’s program increasing from three to four days.
The event boasts a showcase of more than 360 exhibitors presenting a diverse range of gardeningrelated products, and features Australia’s largest gardening speaker program including ‘Australian gardening royalty’ like Costa Georgiadis, Jerry ColebyWilliams, Claire Bickle, Millie Ross and Phil Dudman – to name but a few.
Joining in the excitement once again, is none other than Australian gardening icon and TV personality, Sophie Thomson, who has been a regular speaker at the Queensland Garden Expo since 2016.
Ms Thomson said she always finds time for the annual Expo in her busy schedule as a popular
more recently the recipient of an Inspiring South Australian Women’s Award.
“The Queensland Garden Expo gives you both inspiration and information for whatever size garden you have, wherever you live, and whatever your budget,” said Ms Thomson.
“It’s designed by gardeners for gardeners. I love the incredible array of plants and garden art, and the program of over 150 garden talks is incredible.
“When I get the program, I go through the talks with a highlighter to mark all the ones I would like to listen to.
it’s specialist plant growers, beekeepers, floral artists or members of the Horticultural Media Association.
“I always love the Kitchen Garden displays created by Tohm and members of the Perennial Poppies, but to be honest the entire event is wonderful as the exhibitors, the garden clubs, the nurseries and the speakers are all part of one big family.”
Ms Thomson said the 40th anniversary had her reminiscing on how far gardening has come since the Expo’s first event in 1985
“I was a punk teenager who had bright orange hair with hair extensions and lots of crazy makeup and clothes,” Ms Thomson said.
“It’s great to see an increased interest in growing edibles and indoors, but also greater recognition for the value of gardens and gardening to support our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, and that of our communities.”
Event Manager, Marion Beazley, said that by staying true to its roots and retaining the authenticity the event has become
following of attendees from across the nation and even internationally.
“The Queensland Garden Expo was conceived by a group of Sunshine Coast people from the nursery and gardening industry who wanted to share their love of gardening and their knowledge with local gardeners, and has grown year-on-year into the gardener’s paradise our visitors travel far-and-wide for today,” said Ms Beazley.
“More than 65 per cent of people who attend the Expo have travelled from outside the region with
many stating the great access to the who’s who of gardening, the more than 150 free lectures and demonstrations across six live speaker stages and the direct access to nurseries and growers to ask questions relevant to their own gardens, as the main reasons they love this event.
“That’s the beauty of the Expo, you definitely don’t need to be a pro-gardener as we have something for everyone – from absolute amateurs to fanatical green thumbs and everyone in between!
“With a jam-packed schedule celebrating our 40 years featuring the popular Poultry Spectacular, expert-led advice on home produce cultivation and cooking demonstrations, there’s never been a better time to immerse yourself in the world of Queensland Garden Expo.”
The four-day Queensland Garden Expo will be held from Thursday, 4 July, to Sunday, 7 July, at the Nambour Showgrounds, Coronation Avenue, Nambour.
Entry is free for children aged 15 and under with a giant kids’ playground to keep them entertained.
