Hi Everyone...
What's On this week Peachester Hall celebration
on the Cover
Anyone who regularly reads my column knows that I always try to be as upbeat as possible and not focus on me and my woes. However, this week I have to be honest and say I am struggling to stay my usual chipper self. I have been hobbling about for a couple of weeks with what I refer to as my dodgy hip. A few years ago I hurt it while performing a karaoke rendition of 'Dancing Queen' at our staff Christmas shindig and it would appear that there now may be some longer term ramifications from that injury. Following on from an extensive round of doctor’s appointments, x-rays and ultrasounds I am now waiting on a more accurate diagnosis. At this stage I am mostly just moaning, groaning and taking pain medication and keeping out of everyone’s way by working from home. So why am I sharing this little insight into my world? Just to let everyone know that I won’t be getting to events in the coming week and if you ring the office you may not be able to speak to me. However, I just want to assure everyone that the rest of our amazing GC&M News team are doing a great job backing me up at the moment. And thanks for your understanding! Regards,

Local News Maleny emergency services complex a step closer The Minister for Fire and Emergency Services, Craig Crawford, came to town last week to see where the new Maleny emergency services complex will be constructed. The complex will house the SES, the urban fire brigade and the rural fire brigade all within the one facility on the corner of Macadamia Drive and Dixon Avenue, Maleny. Addressing members of all three services, Mr Crawford explained that the process of finding and securing land is always the longest part of any building project.
“The next stage is to finalise the plans and commence construction,” he said. The urban brigade is currently situated on Bunya Street opposite the high school but the SES and rural brigade have been sharing a shed in the Maleny Showgrounds. “Touch wood … there’s only one more Maleny Show to go for you,” the Minister said, referring to the situation where the two services have to move out each year for Maleny Show week to make way for the dairy pavilion.

Lifelong hinterland resident, businessman, community worker and former Caloundra City councillor Winston Johnston will be a candidate for division 5 of Sunshine Coast Council at the local government elections next March. Born, educated and raised near Maleny, Mr Johnston knows each area of division 5 well. He established his insurance brokerage – Your Insurance Broker – as a small business in Maleny, successfully expanding to service the Sunshine Coast hinterland, Caloundra and Brisbane. He and his wife Helen have two children. Daughter Rachel is a global human resources manager and son Winston is a software development manager in California. Mr Johnston has simultaneously been an active community worker and a keen supporter of sporting and community groups. He is a past president and life member of Maleny Show Society and has held numerous leadership roles in Lions, Rotary, the Chamber of Commerce, Maleny District Sport and Recreation and state school P&Cs. He has held positions on the Caloundra Maroochy Water Supply Board, Sunshine Coast Tourism and Development Board, Sunshine Coast hospital boards, Sunshine Coast University site planning committee and general insurance industry councils. Mr Johnston spent nine years as a division 2 councillor representing Maleny and Landsborough, becoming chairman of the tourism, town planning and development committees, responsible for the implementation of town plan reviews and local area plans for coastal and hinterland areas.
“I am sharply aware that hinterland residents want a councillor who understands and is passionate about sustainable tourism while creating an environment for business and agricultural success in our many towns and districts in division 5,” he said. “As a councillor I will plan and debate strongly to deliver better roads, parks, footpath linkages and improved maintenance of council assets, including greater weed control. “I will implement improved parking facilities to keep residents and visitors shopping locally instead of travelling to coastal shopping complexes.” Residing in Maleny, Mr Johnston says he is ideally located to service division 5, a huge rural division with at least eight distinct towns and diverse communities. He said that travelling between Maleny, Nambour and Caloundra for council meetings meant that every area could be serviced personally. “We are not second-class citizens just because we choose to live west of the Bruce Highway. Our residents deserve facilities and infrastructure standards comparable to those enjoyed on the coastal strip. I will be a strong advocate for our people and for our area,” Mr Johnston said. Mr Johnston plans to attend as many community meetings as possible to even better understand how he can represent residents’ interests. Phone: 0429 076 066 Email: winston.johnston@yib.com.au

Peachester Hall 130th celebrations and opening of Heritage Centre By Sonia Clark
Peachester History Committee members are excited to mark the impressive 130th anniversary of the Peachester Community Hall (formally School of Arts) and the official opening of the brand new Peachester Heritage Centre this Saturday, October 26 from 10am. All residents, past and present, those with a link to the Peachester district and the public are all encouraged and welcome to attend this free event that promises to be a fun-filled day of celebration, community spirit and nostalgia. There will be a lot going on, with the hall packed with community groups featuring activities of the past and present, local historical exhibitions, veteran cars on display from the Veteran Car Club of Australia and live music from the Peachester State School choir and the Singing Belles. There will also be woodchopping and traditional shingle making demonstrations and a live display of pioneer bush crafts such as whip making and blacksmithing. Attendees are encouraged to get into the historical spirit and dress up in period costume from 1889, with prizes for the best outfit. The official ceremonies will start at 11am. In an exciting coup for the Peachester History Committee (PHC), the new Heritage Centre will be declared open by special invited guests, Naomi Love and Dmitri Koroloff, grandchildren of famous local long-range weather forecaster Inigo Jones. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson and local dignitaries will also be in attendance.
PHC president Helen Page said that after 20 years of collecting and recording the district's history, which could be extended to almost 40 years if time allocated by previous historians was included, PHC members were excited to see the Heritage Centre project come to fruition. “It’s so exciting as we have been waiting for this day for more than 20 years. We look forward to unveiling the new purpose-built Heritage Centre to the public, as well as celebrating the important role that Peachester Hall has served as the central community meeting place for 130 years,” Helen said. The new Heritage Centre will house several permanent exhibitions including displays depicting the rich timber history of the Peachester district from bullock teams to the present, the sport of woodchopping and famous axe men from the local area, the unique whittling collection of Jim Hall, Inigo Jones and the Crohamhurst Observatory, and an Anzac gallery honouring local servicemen and women. The timber history exhibit includes the Slim Moroney collection, which includes a blitz truck, axes and saws as well as other tools donated by local families. Helen said that in addition to the permanent displays there would also be future rotating exhibitions focussing on other areas of local history and industry.
Jan Gresham and Helen Page add the final touches to the Inigo Jones display “Our opening day will also feature a special collection of lovely local wedding photos and memorabilia, as well as farming and community history information. We are also looking forward to seeing the hall displays from a number of our local community groups such as Mountain Quilters, QCWA, Peachester school, playgroup, local churches and others,” Helen said. A specially curated historical audio visual, ‘Peachester digital story’, will be launched at the event. It was compiled by Reflected Image Productions and sponsored by Sunshine Coast Council. The production focusses on the story of the Peachester Hall and local district history, and will be played continuously throughout the day. Given the historic relevance of the timber industry to the district, the nearby Peachester Sawmill will also be open on the day. Free entry, yummy food and refreshments available for purchase will make it a great day out. For more details call 5494 9557 or follow Peachester Community Hall or Peachester History Committee on Facebook.

Colourful corner connects residents
Gardens have the power to create joy and unite people and that’s definitely the effect Joan’s garden has had at Seasons Aged Care Caloundra. Spilling out from her courtyard and bringing colour to a corner section of the community close to the walking track, Joan’s garden is a popular meeting point for other residents who pop by to enjoy her colourful blooms. Joan’s love of flowers sparked the garden’s creation. “We have really good gardens here but there weren’t a lot of flowers I liked, so my daughter asked if she could start a garden for me and they said if you do it and you look after it, you can have it,” Joan said. “When we first started, they said we’d never keep it up because as you get older you don’t want to do things but it’s a very good interest for me because my son-in-law plants a lot of things and my daughter helps all the time too.” Joan’s daughter Roslyn (pictured above with Joan) says the garden has also blossomed its fair share of friendships with many residents popping in to look at the garden and staying to chat. “It’s good for the residents as they walk around to see what’s in the garden at different times of the season and it’s good for Mum too, as the residents are all interacting, they’re talking about the plants, remembering what they used to grow in their gardens, so it’s lovely," Roslyn said. Joan agrees and loves that people enjoy her garden as much as she does. “It’s given people a lot of interest and also me. It’s nice to see flowers and things growing,” Joan said. To find out more about Seasons Caloundra, visit www.seasonsagedcare.com.au/ caloundra or phone 1300 732 766.

Golden memories for class of 1969
some lovely ones set in the classroom that, no doubt, brought back some fond school yard memories. The planned reunions originated in 2014 when the society celebrated 60 years of high school education in Maleny with a reunion for the original students on their Pioneer Day. In 2015 a reunion was held for students who started high school from 1955 to 1960 and each following year the corresponding golden class has been celebrated. Next year 2020 will mark the golden milestone of the class of 1970. To find out more about next year’s reunion or future Maleny school reunions visit www.historicalsocietymaleny.com.

Maleny Cultural and Historical Society hosted a golden class reunion on Sunday, October 13, for Maleny students who started high school in 1969, which included students who joined or left the cohort at any time. The reunion was hosted at the Maleny Pioneer Village with a morning tea, official welcome and lunch celebration to mark the milestone, followed by a tour of Maleny State School. Historical Society vice president Desley Malone said that every year the society planned to host a 50-year school reunion at the village. “This year we celebrated the class of 1969, which was well attended. The reunion included students who joined that class at any year level during the 12 years at the Maleny State School. This class started year 1 in 1962 and graduated year 12 in 1973,” Desley said. Following the official welcome and presentations in the Car Club, local community photographer Marsha Kelly took some group photos, including

Kind volunteers help keep pets and owners together for longer
O T E M I T IT’S

E L I M S R YOU
There’s nothing like the love and companionship that a pet can bring. However, through stages of life it can become a little more difficult to stay on top of our pet’s physical needs. Thankfully, there is a group of local pet-loving volunteers who are eager to connect with seniors and people with mobility limitations to help keep their pets at home with them for longer. The Pets for Life program was conceived through seeing the distress experienced by people who, as they found it increasingly difficult to meet their pet's ongoing needs, had to surrender their beloved companion. From this, the Caloundra Community Centre set up Pets for Life with the aim to connect pet owners with screened and trained volunteers to provide regular assistance, such as dog walking, access to veterinary services and assistance with the general wellbeing and care of pets. The program has been operating for more than ten years and currently has 60 pet owners and 70 volunteers across the Sunshine Coast region. One volunteer who has been involved with Pets for Life for almost four years is Beerwah local, Tricia Field. When she retired, Tricia, who has always had a love for dogs, jumped at the opportunity to become involved with the program. Tricia currently volunteers her time once a week to help loving pet owner, Max, with his best mate, Bailey. “It’s very rewarding and gives me a reason to get out of bed, too,” Tricia said. “It’s important to people that they’re able to keep their pets and I love that I’m able to help them with that. “On top of that, I’ve developed a strong friendship with Max over the years, and enjoy our time catching up each week.” As well as helping people care for pets, the program also aims to reduce social isolation for older people, fostering relationships in the community and offering further support to those who may be housebound. Recently, the program has had an increase in local volunteers in the Landsborough, Mooloolah, Beerwah and Maleny region who are eager to connect with pet owners in the area who may like a little extra support looking after their pets. Pets for Life is a free program that will introduce volunteers to owners and their pets to discuss what their individual needs are. Volunteers can assist with both short- and long-term support options and individuals will usually have more than one volunteer helping them. If you or someone you know would like to connect with a volunteer who would love to care for your pet as their own, you can find out more about Pets for Life by contacting Mark on 5491 4000 or 0414 519 047, or visit the website www.petsforlife.org.au.

Works are under way to improve safety on Landsborough-Maleny Road around what’s locally called Cairncross Corner. Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said line marking and signs would be improved following community feedback. “This area is a popular route for tourists and day trippers,” Mr Bailey said. “These works will increase driver awareness of the upcoming Mountain View Road intersection when travelling eastbound on LandsboroughMaleny Road and the potential need to slow due to turning vehicles." The work is part of the Queensland Government’s record $23 billion roads and transport program, which includes the $812 million Bruce Highway upgrade from Caloundra Road to the Sunshine Motorway and $4 million Beerwah intersection upgrade. Line marking on the eastbound lane of Landsborough-Maleny Road will be modified to clarify the shoulder is not a passing lane but is a wide sealed shoulder for through traffic to slow and pass with caution if a motorist is turning right. “Signs on the approach and at the intersection will also be modified to better define the intersection and give eastbound motorists improved warning of the potential need to slow down,” Mr Bailey said. He said the existing advance sign to Mountain View Road would be replaced with a simplified sign that placed greater emphasis on the direction to Mountain View Road. “The existing sign includes competing information for Landsborough, Blackall Range Tourist Drive and Mary Cairncross Park,” he said. “To simplify this, the reference to Landsborough will be removed and the Blackall Tourist Drive wording replaced with the tourist drive shield. “We are committed to building and maintaining safer roads and these works will deliver more clarity for motorists using this road each day.” The line marking and sign works are scheduled to be completed by the end of the year, weather permitting.

Support drought relief with morning tea and fashions Want to help drought-stressed farmers and don’t know how? An effective way is by enjoying the Anglican parish morning tea and fashion parade at Tranquil Park on Wednesday, October 30, at 10am. The doors will open at 9.30am so you have time to buy tickets in a raffle that includes a painting donated by local artist Michele Retschlag. Tranquil Park is supporting Terri De Braconier Harders this initiative by making space and Di Weightman from available free of charge and allowing the ladies of the Maleny, Simply Stylish Montville and Kenilworth churches to provide a delicious morning tea. While you are enjoying the cakes and slices and sneaking a glance at the stunning view from time to time, you can tempt yourself with lovely clothes from Simply Stylish and elegant shoes from Imelda’s on Maple. Simply Stylish has also donated 25% off vouchers to be given away. Cost is $20 per person and priest-in-charge, the Reverend Jeanette Jamieson, says the church is expecting to raise a substantial amount for drought relief in Queensland. “It is so easy to talk about the Charlie Moore and Anne Hughes huge difficulty our rural people from Imelda’s on Maple are going through with fires now
adding to the horror, even to pray about it, but the fact is we need to make some practical contribution to relieve some of the traumas at this time,” she said. Proceeds will be split between Darling Downs Lifeline and the QCWA Public Rural Crisis fund with speakers from both organisations attending the morning tea to talk about how they are coping with this ongoing tragedy for drought-affected farmers, rural workers and businesses. Rev Jeanette is asking everyone to join a fun morning and support those whose livelihoods are being threatened. “Please, let’s take this pleasant opportunity to help our neighbours. Join Tranquil Park, Simply Stylish, Imelda’s shoes and the Anglican parish at what will be a very enjoyable occasion. “A morning tea for $20 is not much to give to support those doing it really tough from all of us whose only problem is trying to keep our gardens alive,” Rev Jeanette said. Tickets are available from St Mary’s in Montville and St Luke’s in Kenilworth and from the parish office in Maleny on 5499 9130 or 0429 073 262.
New supervisor course helps steer learner drivers
A new online course has been launched to help Queensland parents teach their kids how to drive. Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the PrepL supervisor course had been launched after the success of PrepL, the new online learning and assessment program for learners. "Learner drivers are like sponges - they are rapidly absorbing information about driving,” Mr Bailey said. “The PrepL supervisor course includes a 30-question quiz for users to test their road rules knowledge. Based on their results, the course provides tailored road rule information to address any gaps. “We recognise teaching a learner driver is a tough job and this course will make it a more rewarding experience for learners and their supervisors," Mr Bailey said. He said the course would also help supervisors deal with stressful situations. ”The course includes specialist guides and lesson plans for supervisors, which start with the basics and progress to more complex situations. “Too much stress during a driving session is not a good outcome and the course includes information to help supervisors communicate effectively with their learner," Mr Bailey said.

Contributed by Peter Voight Beerwah State High School recently celebrated its fifth annual Academic & Cultural Cup. Teachers and students were entertained by an array of talent, which included performances by our award-winning Dance Company, the beats of a fantastic small drum ensemble, the beautiful harmonic tones of Beerwah High’s vocal group and some electric rock performances by both a student band and the rockin’-it-like-they’re-still-kids teacher band. Congratulations to Team Tunbubudla, which managed a three-peat of cups, making it four wins out of five cups. A maroon mortarboard will again grace the beautiful Academic & Cultural Champions’ trophy for another 12 months. Support from local businesses during the first five years of this exciting initiative has been incredible and our awardees are always extremely surprised and excited to receive their prizes. A massive thank you to local businesses Vianta Espresso, Australia Zoo, Aussie World, Beerwah Flowers & Gifts, Beerwah Newsagency, The Coffee Club at Beerwah, Laserzone Warana, Coolum Blast Aqua Park, Baan Thai Restaurant and the Beerwah State High School P&C Association for once again providing some amazing age champion prizes. Their continued support is playing a huge role in our endeavours to carry the academic culture of our school to even loftier heights. This year, six new and six returning year level male and female champions added their names to the BSHS Scholastic Almanac. The beautiful leatherbound book of parchment paper was signed by our champions, adding to the history of age champions held within its pages. Our school is blessed with so many talented and enthusiastic students and teachers. Our plane has reached its flying altitude and some very exciting destinations are in store for all passengers aboard the BSHS airliner! This year's age champions were Anastasia Maher and Jaksen Robertson (year 7), Tara Weston and Riley Ferguson (year 8), Perry and Samuel Nutt (year 9), Zoey Budd and Ethan Crumpton (year 10), Natalie Ross and Nicholas Hind (year 11) and Tahli Cero and Salem Brown (year 12). 48 years of fundraising
Contributed by Bruce Page Chairman Charity Sports Committee The Beerwah Charity Sports had a very successful year in 2019, raising $28,500 for Cancer Council Queensland in what is a difficult financial environment. The Charity Sports Committee would like to say a special thank you to the community for putting in the extra effort to make sure the sports day was such a success again this year. The generosity of our sponsors and the enthusiasm of our supporters are a real credit to the Glasshouse Country community. A special thanks to all at the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News, who go the extra yard to help promote local community events. As many of our committee members have been working for the whole 48 years, in order to ensure the future of this event, we are looking for new members with new ideas to enable us to meet the challenges of the years ahead. If you would like to be involved in raising money for this important cause, please contact some of the Charity Sports Committee members. I am sure you would find it rewarding working with such an enthusiastic group of people. Once again, thanks to the community and especially to all the volunteers who help on Charity Sports Day each year.

Outspoken in Maleny, which organises occasional conversations with writers, is pleased to welcome Aria award winning and Logie nominated Clare Bowditch to Maleny as part of her Speaking Frankly tour. On Wednesday, November 6, the music maker/story baker/educator (as her website describes her) will be speaking about her memoir ‘Your Own Kind of Girl’, which will resonate with anyone who’s ever suspected they were born for something more but had no idea where to begin. From her humble beginnings as a young woman working in a call centre in Melbourne, too afraid to declare her dreams, a brilliant Jeff Buckley concert and a terrible breakup inspired Clare to change. She quit her job, packed her backpack, grabbed her guitar and headed to London to test her fate. ‘Your Own Kind of Girl’ intersects stories of her own childhood grief, body size, self doubt, hope, love, a nervous breakdown in Oxford and an artfuelled recovery, reminding readers of the power of the stories we tell ourselves and how to change them for the better. Written with honestly and humility, Clare’s stories of trying to play a bigger game in a world where we don’t quite fit are both moving and hilarious. The evening will also introduce journalist, freelance writer, copywriter, business blogger and sub-editor, Leigh Robshaw. Leigh recently published her fast-paced, colourful and sometimes shocking memoir ‘You Had Me at Hola’, which is set in South America and Mexico, and follows a woman in search of truth and love. Clare and Leigh will be in conversation with Steven Lang at 6.30pm on Wednesday, November 6 at the Maleny Community Centre. Tickets are $22 and $15 for students and can be purchased online via Outspoken’s website www.outspokenmaleny.com. Come along and enjoy an evening in conversation with two wonderful authors and there is rumour that Clare may even sing a few songs.

Christmas at Beerwah Picture Framing Christmas is just around the corner and Seb at Beerwah Picture Framing loves helping his customers with their Christmas shopping. He reckons that with his range of framing products and services, he can assist just about anyone with their Christmas shopping. Custom framing is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Beerwah Picture Framing and Seb loves working with his customers to pick the correct combination of mat board and frame moulding to make a beautiful painting or photograph really sing. There is, however, much more on offer at Beerwah Picture Framing. Seb puts his years of professional photography experience to good use offering quality photo restoration to his customers. He restores photographs that have been through the ravages of time to their former glory then uses his large format Epson professional printer to print the
restored image on quality photo paper that complements the style of the image. Seb can also print your own artwork or photograph and custom frame it to your personal liking. Quality canvas stretching is very special when it is done well. Seb has done a lot of canvas stretching so he has a wealth of knowledge and experience. To really give the image extra impact, Seb can set it behind a complementary frame, in a float frame or stretch the image over the side of the frame in a modern art deco effect. If you have an image that you really love, talk to Seb about printing it on canvas, then have him stretch it for you.
For more details, call Seb at Beerwah Picture Framing on 0407 678 520. He looks forward to helping his customers with their gift options in the lead up to Christmas.
One of the important issues for Christmas picture framing is to allow sufficient time for the job to be done. The turnover time for framing jobs is normally up to four weeks, so it is vitally important for the art or photograph to be brought into Beerwah Picture Framing (by appointment) at the earliest possible time. Seb will always do his very best to help his customers but as Christmas gets closer, the choice in types of material and colours may be reduced as suppliers wind down and close for the Christmas break.

You Said It Climate change
The divisiveness, factionalisation and politicisation of the term “climate change” would appear to be jeopardising the involvement of all in improving the environment. One only has to visit large cities to appreciate the pollution of the air one sees and breathes caused by coal-fired power stations, traffic and population concentration. Maybe “prevent pollution” and not “climate change” would remove the polarisation and everyone would become involved, whatever their political persuasion, instead of arguing the existence of climate change. Jobs, growth and even existence are an impossibility without a livable environment. Susan M Pollock Witta
Re: Quarry expansion
After reading Bill Kendall’s letter to the editor in GC&M News, October 9 edition, regarding the Hanson Quarry at Glass House Mountains I would like to make some comments. First Bill lives at Conondale and does not witness on a daily basis the interaction of trucks, vehicles and people on the designated route. Yes, the quarry has operated for well over 20 years but much has changed in that time as I pointed out in a letter to this paper last year. The rapid expansion of housing as well as tourists to our area, along with a problematic road lends itself to potential incidents. I refer to the corner of Coonowrin and Old Gympie roads, the primary school, the S bend leading over the rail bridge, the structural integrity of the bridge itself, as well as trucks parking at the Glass House shopping centre. Also the Glass House area is now heritage listed, which encourages more people to visit and possibly reside. I agree with Bill that the truck drivers are courteous and do the best they can. I am now concerned about the future and how all of this is going to be managed. John Quinn Glass House Mountains
Re New resort-style retirement opportunity in Beerwah
it is with sadness that this project is not being done with the first inhabitants in mind. By that I mean the flora and fauna. It is noted that no right of refusal exists in this council coded area. This is unacceptable and disheartening when the vague plan is not readily available for the green space and creeks. There is a vibrant creek and eco system, which they are suggesting will be cleared. The trees that they are deeming be culled are significant to the creeks and their inhabitants. The wildlife has flourished as it is. The green space is meant to be a minimum of 20% and they have reduced it to 17%. The dog walk area is to be immediately adjacent to the creek, which will impact on the large variety of animals that successfully thrive here. The plan claims this is an isolated eco system and of little significance to the area it exists in. This is far from the truth. In our little creek we currently have platypus, turtles, goanna, lizard, insects, birds and butterflies. I feel that the environmental study for the development is largely ignoring that the fauna has managed to eke out a quality existence despite the invasive flora and fauna and, while isolated, it is also flourishing. This and all the developments in the area are not being considerate of our flora and fauna. The development is, according to their report, largely on clear ground and yet they are looking at clearing the areas close to the creek that are supposed to be 22

Re: Our roads are dangerous
I find it no surprise that Cr Rick Baberowski tries to blame the state government for council problems (GC&M News, October 16 edition). Cr Rick seems to be forgetting that the council rejected the state government idea of a second link to Brisbane, which would have reduced the amount of traffic on Steve Irwin Way and improved safety. Cr Rick states that our rates only go so far. How much are the delays on the Roy’s Rd work costing ratepayers or was Cr Rick hoping we wouldn’t notice the extended finish date? Or the works on the Page Street park where a garden has been installed but pedestrian access is sign posted to go through the garden. Council mismanagement is the root cause of the issues and it seems that council doesn’t care unless you live east of the highway.

and linked groundwater sustain? Queensland does not have Tasmania’s climate. Rather than respectfully inform and educate us about dam safety and viability, Mr Powell attacks Labor as being "anti-dams, anti-regions and antifarmers". In his tirade he fails to mention the downstream safety issues behind the release of Paradise Dam water. Many of our dams are a fair age and paid for by our parents. To build a dam now is extremely expensive. The current general price of water is $3 million a gigalitre. Water from the proposed Tamworth Dungowan Dam is projected to be ten times that cost. That’s tax payers’ money. Which crops can yield a profit to justify the spending? Yes, we need to subsidise farming but is this the best way? How much will go to multi-national agribusiness? Yes, we need water for towns and communities, and these people pay the cost of the water, as they should – if there is any left. A responsible and accountable government must weigh up all these options – as Labor is doing – including with Mr Powell’s LNP proposed dams. The dishonest politicking of the LNP stifles innovation into new ways to address droughts, share water and support farmers. Gillian Pechey Maleny
Dams don't provide water security

Re: Powell’s dam comments
In his letter to the editor (GC&M News, October 15) LNP opposition Member for Glass House Andrew Powell attacked the state Labor government as "antidams, anti-regions and anti-farmers". Does Mr Powell seriously think he can just spout these lazy LNP lines and expect us to take it as the gospel truth? The state government is doing an extraordinary amount for drought relief. The measures are far too extensive to list here but in drought-ravaged Stanthorpe, for example, the government is spending $800,000 per month to truck water into the town and $13.6 million to kick start the Southern Downs region’s new Emu Swamp Dam. As for Mr Powell’s claims about the LNP’s grand plans to "drought-proof" Queensland, their parliamentary record on water infrastructure speaks volumes. The LNP opposed building Traveston Dam, opposed using recycled water in Toowoomba and opposed the water grid for South East Queensland. Andrew Powell and the LNP talk tough but when the rubber hits the road they retreat to their default setting - oppose everything. Brent Hampstead Maleny
Honesty about new dams
Our local LNP MP (GC&M News, October 16) claims more dams are the solution to drought. There are already 820 major dams in this very dry continent. Many of them are in the Murray-Darling catchment, where we know how that tragedy unfolded. Dry dams and dry rivers. In Queensland there are over 60 large and medium sized dams, and many more weirs. The Brisbane catchment is well dammed with a sizeable amount going up to Toowoomba. Where in South East Queensland does Mr Powell plan another dam? How many more dams can Queensland rivers
Mr Andrew Powell MP would have us believe that the LNP has the solution to drought proofing Queensland, by building more dams. In promulgating this policy, he asks that the community relies on blind faith that rains will fill dams because they have in the past. Antiquated ideas about drought-proofing, such as those pushed by LNP politicians, promise much yet deliver little. They distract attention and siphon funds from realistic solutions, or actually reevaluating where and how we use our limited water resources. Mr Powell wants us to believe that the Palaszczuk government is asleep at the wheel. He is wrong. In 2018, the Palaszczuk government completed a comprehensive review of Queensland's drought, in which several significant recommendations were made and commissioners appointed. The thrust of these recommendations is practical, effective and well considered and are based on the concept of self-reliance. The report and further information can be accessed at: www.daf.qld.gov.au/business-priorities/agriculture/ disaster-recovery/drought/program-review. In August this year, Premier Palaszczuk also wrote to the Prime Minister to plead for early access to the Australian Government's $5 billion drought resilience fund, because, after paying out more than $100 million in relief, she stated: “Queensland can't wait until mid-next year for funding to flow because 65 per cent of our state is already in the grip of a devastating drought. Many are facing their seventh challenging year without the rain they need and ... little hope of reprieve." She was rebuffed by the federal Coalition government who have locked their drought dollars up for the future, should one even exist for the longsuffering people of drought stricken Queensland. The LNP are playing politics with people's lives. It seems unconscionable, in this seven-year drought, that they seem to think with dwindling rainfall, another indicator of climate change, that yet unbuilt dams will somehow fill and transform Queensland's brown paddocks into green verdant fields. They are seriously deluded. Ken Dyer Landsborough

Open day for Maleny Independent School Maleny Independent School opened its doors in 2018, offering a holistic child-centred approach to learning, grounded in philosophies of neohumanism and mindfulness. The school offers inspiring and engaging educational options that support a connected curriculum with real-world implications, and is the only neohumanist-based secondary school in Australia. Director Rowan Hutson said the school sought to empower children to be passionate about their learning, and students were encouraged to achieve their full potential academically, socially, emotionally and physically. “We believe learning opportunities are ignited through being curious. We are committed to supporting an environment that fosters a deep love of learning in a school where the children feel a sense of belonging and which they are passionate about,” Rowan said.
The school promotes enquiry-based learning and a purposefully connected curriculum that meets the Australian Curriculum requirements. A full range of subjects is offered, as well as extension and learning support-based programs. Currently the school has 25 enrolled students in years 7-9, with the secondary school extending in 2020 to offer schooling for years 7-10. If you would like to find out more, Maleny Independent School is hosting a rescheduled open day on Monday, October 28 from 9-10.30am. The day will offer parents and caregivers the opportunity to meet the school principal and key staff members, gain an understanding of the curriculum and learn more about the programs and options on offer. To register your interest to attend, call 5494 2352 or email admin@mis.qld.edu.au. The school is located at 23 Coral Street, Maleny. More details at www.malenyindependantschool.com.au.

Community scholarships now available to attend Caloundra City Private School in 2020 With a school motto of ‘Excellence, Integrity, Learning’, Caloundra City Private School (CCPS) is committed to fostering an enriching and meaningful learning experience where students feel secure, happy and comfortable. Located within the beautiful natural environment of Pelican Waters near Pumicestone Passage Caloundra, this vibrant young school is well positioned to service the community with all of the benefits independent schooling in Queensland has to offer for girls and boys. With generous support from prominent local benefactors, an opportunity is currently available for students in years 6-11 to obtain a community scholarship to attend the school. The Henzell and Ford families are offering more than $500,000 to fund a community scholarship opportunity that subsidises education fees for Sunshine Coast students who contribute significantly to the local community. In an effort to recognise and celebrate students who demonstrate excellent character, moral integrity and engaging with the local community, Henzells Agency has generously funded the scholarship at Caloundra City Private School commencing in 2020. Henzells Agency director Roy Henzell, who is a passionate Caloundra local, has a long-standing relationship with the community and an ambition
to see the region and next generations thrive. “We recognise the pressure many families face to afford private school education and want to provide a way to give back to our community,” Mr Henzell said. “We are proud to partner with CCPS as we believe in our community and the school’s value for students with strong integrity.” School principal Dr Dirk Wellham said
community was a core value and attribute at CCPS and the generous financial support was the perfect partnership that would offer an incredible opportunity to many Sunshine Coast families and students. “At CCPS you don’t have to be the most academically gifted or sporting inclined. What we do place a high value on is integrity, contributing to our small school community and nurturing each student’s potential - and that is what the community scholarship celebrates,” Dr Wellham said. The community scholarships will be awarded to students who will make a significant contribution to the life of the school. Dr Wellham said that this contribution may be through participation in sport, extracurricular activities, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, community and school engagement. “Applicants will demonstrate a long-term commitment to practise and promote good character and an ability to inspire others to do the same,” Dr Wellham said. “They will take responsibility for goals and choices, build relationships and be a team player.” CCPS is now accepting community scholarship applications for 2020. Bus transport is also available. Parents with children in years 6-11 are encouraged to visit the school website at www.ccps.qld.edu.au or contact the school on 5437 5800 for more information about this fantastic opportunity. Applications close on November 8 for entry into the school in 2020.

From the churches I am so disappointed in people’s reaction to environment activist Greta Thunberg, especially among people who call themselves Christian. Regardless of what you believe about climate change, God has told us from the beginning of creation to manage His world responsibly. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t use the resources God has given us. It means we manage them wisely and appropriately. The Bible is clear that this world belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ and we will have to answer to Him for how we have managed or abused it. However, my biggest concern at the moment is not climate change but people’s reactions to Greta. They range from praise to downright slander. Most of the reactions I have seen, many from people who call themselves Christian or religious, has been of ridicule and disdain for this young woman. Here are people who claim to be Jesus’s followers who are ignoring what Jesus said - to love one another and to pray for each other. I think Greta and the responses surrounding her proves what the Bible has always said - we need

Chris Johnson Glasshouse Country Baptist Church help. We can’t agree on climate change and we can’t be nice to a young woman who is deeply concerned about her future. The Bible says our hearts are deceitfully wicked and both sides of the debate have proven that. That’s why we need the Lord Jesus. Jesus knows that we really are incapable of loving even our friends, let alone people we disagree with. Jesus knows that we have broken the most basic of His rules to love one another and care for his world. We rightly deserve his condemnation and punishment. However, Jesus took that punishment we deserve when he died on the cross. The result of Christ’s death is that one day this whole world will be restored and the mess we have made because of our neglect, selfishness and sin will be dealt with finally and completely. One day, because of Jesus, we will be with God in his renewed world. The world doesn’t need Greta to save and rescue us it needs Jesus. DQ $XVWUDOLDQ &KULVWLDQ &KXUFK

If you have a bottlebrush in your yard (Callistemon/ Melaleuca spp) and it’s in flower, then you’ve probably been hearing and seeing lots of scarlet honeyeaters this spring. The dry weather over the vast majority of the countryside seems to be bringing these and many more drought refugees towards the coast in exceptionally large numbers this year. These are the lucky ones that can fly in search of food as their usual territory is left parched and bare. We can help keep them fed and alive in these hot and dry times by creating habitat gardens and sharing our backyards with wildlife. The heat wave earlier this month and the dry weather also combined to make just staying alive a struggle for our flying foxes, with thousands perishing locally. It was heartening to see so many people working to keep these beautiful animals alive during these exceptional conditions by putting out fruit to help tide them over. Thank you to all the local wildlife carers who were going flat out with rescues and caring for ill and injured flying foxes. Loss of habitat is a key factor bringing on these natural disasters by the two-pronged effect of removing both food sources and the beneficial effect that forest cover has in controlling extremes of climate. As gardeners we can really make a difference to these conditions with our gardens helping to moderate climatic extremes and providing food and shelter. Let’s end with a tip to keep you all safe and healthy, especially all you ophiophobes (those with a snake phobia). The first hot days of spring are bringing our slithery friends out in good numbers. Regardless of whether we’re scared of them or not, it’s good to dress safe when working in the garden during the warmer months, for example, long baggy pants, boots and long-sleeved shirts to avoid any potential injury to either party. Spencer and his wife Karen Shaw run Forest Heart Nursery 20 Coral Street, Maleny in Maleny. Their nursery concentrates on local native plants, 07 5435 2193 bush foods, timber trees, native gardens, fruit trees, nonOPEN Tue - Fri 9am-5pm invasive exotics, tools and equipment, garden and ecology Sat 8am - 2:00pm education, books, DVDs, art and so much more.

Sport 2019 PGA Legends Pro-Am purse lifted The third annual Maleny Golf Club Legends Pro-Am to be held on Saturday, December 7, is expected to attract a host of marquee players chasing the prize money that has been lifted to $20,000, while amateurs could win a new car from Pacific Ford by scoring a hole-in-one. The club is pleased to announce that the local hinterland accommodation and hospitality specialist, Clouds Retreats, as naming rights sponsor of this year’s event. Club president Jeff Kruse said it was fantastic to be teaming up with Clouds Retreats to bring the Legends Tour back to Maleny and it will coincide with the official opening of the final six holes of the club’s quality 18-hole course. More than 60 tour regulars are expected to play, including golfing icon Peter Senior (who has already confirmed his entry), with other big names such as Peter Lonard and Craig Parry potentially joining the field along with defending title holder Ben Jackson. “Last year we received great feedback from the players, the PGA and our sponsors, and it’s very encouraging to enjoy such strong continuing

headline support from Clouds Retreats so we can keep developing this tournament as a premier annual fixture on the region’s golfing and event calendar,” Jeff said. There is no admission cost for tournament spectators and the course offers some excellent elevated vantage points where you can follow the progress of the players.

Sport The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Bev Sockhill and Ken Barker went down 5–6 in a tight game against Gillian Bradley and Helen Andrews. Donna Manning competed in the second division CAQ medal competition held at Graceville club. Well done Donna for a fine performance. On Saturday, October 12 as an aside to the training, there was a lively six-ball game between Ken, Wallace Roy and Stuart Craig. It would be fair to say that not much serious play was involved in this game. Sarah Widin thrashed Ken 26–2 in a one-sided game in which she played beautifully. Meanwhile Helen and Wallace played very well against Kath Smith and created a significant early lead. Kath fought back gamely but was unable to reel them in and the final score was 11–9 against her. Playing times have changed for summer. New times are 2pm for 2.30 pm. Play days are on Thursdays and Sundays on the once-again green and cheerful lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showgrounds. Coaching for beginners and others is available from 8-10 am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Our web address is www.rangecroquetatmaleny. org.au. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 54942193 or secretary Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.

Witta Tennis Contributed by Pauline Fraley Witta Wagtails enjoyed their day of tennis against Eumundi Miss Gems but unfortunately not the score. Eumundi Miss Gems were the stronger of the two and the winners on the day. Thanks to Jan Maguire, Cynthia Garvie, Sonia Douglas and special thanks again to Jill Murtagh for filling in. Witta Whistlers played a hard fought and very close match against the number one team in division one, Ballinger Breezes. With Aki Leper out for the day Roz Evans came in and did a great job winning all her sets. The matches went down to the wire and it was anyone's match going into the last two sets. Ballinger were victorious by one game. Thanks again to the triumphant team but congratulations to Paula Cudmore, Roz Evans, Brenda Warner and Donna Kuskopf for their tenacious effort. The Wildcats were at home to division leaders Eumundi Echo. Pauline Fraley, Stacey English, Annie Stewart and Libby Howlett were up by one game after the first two sets. They remained in the lead to the end with many very close sets. Fantastic tennis from both teams but the Wildcats prevailed bringing the win home. Final score was 6–2 sets; 40–33 games. Social tennis is on Monday 8am and Saturday 1pm. All welcome. For court bookings phone 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au. 40

Just for Laughs A cat died and went to Heaven. God met the animal at the Pearly Gates and said: “You have been a good cat all of these years. Anything you want is yours for the asking.” The cat thought for a moment and said: “All my life I lived on a farm and slept on hard, wooden floors. I would like a real fluffy pillow to sleep on.” God said: “Say no more.” Instantly, the cat had a huge fluffy pillow. A few days later, 12 mice were simultaneously killed in an accident and they all went to Heaven together. God met the mice at the Pearly Gates with the exact same offer that he made to the cat. The mice said: “Well, we have had to run all of our
ARIES March 21 – April 20 After a slow start this week, things will be humming along productively. Do not allow distractions to stop you from keeping your nose to the grindstone, especially on one major project. The weekend sees self control to overcome obstacles and make things happen. The New Moon weekend says “try something new for a change”! TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Before the weekend you are showing a spurt of directed skilled energy to get things done! Over the weekend you have the strength of great relationships to support you and help you to grow. The New Moon on Sunday the 29th is in the sign of Libra. This brings up two issues freedom vs commitment now. GEMINI May 22 – June 23 When it comes to home and family problems you are better at facing hard realities than others who go crazy with confusion. Be careful over the weekend as there could be an accident caused by doing a home project. The New Moon on the weekend is ready to shake you out of your routine. New beginnings are arriving! CANCER June 24 – July 22 You can count on others to provide stability and support this week as the weekend sees the New Moon in the sign of Libra. Hopefully you will work with a trusted connection. If you are a parent it would be perfect to share your feelings with a child. Any new start under way this week of the New Moon requires innovative adaption.

lives… from cats, dogs and even from people with brooms. If we could just have some little rollerskates, we would never have to run again.” God answered: “It is done.” All the mice had beautiful little roller-skates. About a week later, God decided to check on the cat. He found her sound asleep on her fluffy pillow. God gently awakened the cat and asked: “Is everything okay? How have you been doing? Are you happy?” The cat replied: “Oh, everything is just wonderful. I’ve never been so happy in my life! My pillow is always fluffy and those little meals-on-wheels you've been sending over are delicious.”

LEO July 23 – August 22 There is a renewed focus on home and family life for the next few weeks. With the New Moon in the sign of Libra it is the time to clean house literally and emotionally. Be aware that this is also a good time for bargain hunting or trying to get repairs done economically. Mental resourcefulness, with a bit of patience, comes in handy. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 A relationship you have been counting on deepens this week as a result of the New Moon being in the perfect relationship sign of Libra. The weekend sees someone who offers a reason to celebrate. Sometimes a New Moon vibration stirs unexpected secrets with people revealing tight fiscal monetary problems under many obstacles. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 Do not allow yourself to be drawn into situations that put you in a bad light. Being a cardinal leadership sign, you are in a position to take charge even if it does not make everybody happy. The New Moon begins a spotlight on your money and belongings in a special way for the next two weeks, and that can be transformative. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 There are deep feelings about a certain important relationship, be it a friend or colleague. A conversation deepens your understanding and opens the way for trust, loyalty, understanding and happy help. Frustrations and sudden impulses will rock your world and security after the weekend. Take time to reveal some deep feelings now.
SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 21 This weekend sees the New Moon in the sign of Libra and with your sign being a Fire sign, and Libra an Air sign, it is as if you can have a weekend with a get-out-of-jail-free card. There should be a lot of underground tensions that burst to the surface and demand expression. Emotional atmosphere looks for more details. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 The weekend, under the relationship sign of the New Moon being in Libra, stirs passions. But which way? Will it be social or romantic? Travel plans or home duties? There are a few obstacles in your effort to make some career progress but ongoing persistence and patience will achieve a lot at the end of the week. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 This is a week under the atmosphere of the New Moon in the sign of Libra. The road opens up for you for occupational and business advancement through the strength of associations and social contacts. Just remember that every now and then you will not be able to rely on the support of your friends. PISCES February 20 - March 20 The weekend sees the New Moon in the sign of Libra, which brings a reminder of family far away, interstate or overseas. You hear about some of your friends that will be exciting as they go through upsetting changes. Warm affections are sweet from this New Moon and you will want to stay wrapped up in them all day. Secret love notes!

MINI DENTAL IMPLANTS NOW AVAILABLE Does your lower denture have a mind of its own? Is your diet suffering? Would you like to enjoy food, and life again? Mini Dental Implants could be the answer …..
Mini dental implants are becoming increasingly popular in dental care today - because of their smaller size they are often used in cases of limited bone anatomy. They can also make removable dentures more comfortable, and easier to wear. The positive outcomes of choosing mini dental implants include being minimally invasive and affordable. If you are unsure if they would work for you or if you would like to find out more information, please contact David and the team at Dental Excel today.
