Hi Everyone Well with now only days to go until the local government election, I have to say I am really looking forward to seeing the final result.

While I think it was great that Councillor Anna gave our community plenty of notice on her intentions, I am not sure if it might have extended the Division 1 election campaign out a whole year!

And whether having so much time may have contributed to some of the dirty tactics and bad behaviour that has been seen during the past couple of weeks.

Initially it seemed that the guidelines for election signage were being followed, however once some of the Mayoral candidates started blatantly flouting the rules, election signage seemed to be placed anywhere and everywhere.

We then heard claims of election signs being stolen and defaced which was followed up by the

automated phone calls which were presented as a phone poll, but was really just an underhanded way for someone to undermine candidates.

I reckon I am not the only one who right about now will be thinking – bring on Election Day and let’s move on.

Council campaign gets dirty

By Kylie Wyer The final weeks of the local government election campaign have turned ugly, with dirty tactics overshadowing candidates’ final pitch for the ratepayers vote in Division 1.

Early last week, GCNews was made aware of many calls made to ratepayers in Division 1, from Landsborough to Mt Mellum and Beerburrum, who reported receiving automated phone polling calls from an overseas location.

The phone call claimed to be a poll on council voting intentions, and then proceeded to make misleading comments about at least two of the Division 1 candidates.

Following news of the phone poll, Rick Baberowski, who was targeted in the call, with an implication that he had given himself an award while working for council, has refuted the claim, calling it a “stunningly low anonymous smear campaign.”

He said the allegation made in the call is shocking, absurb and false.

He said the award he received (Gallery and Museums Achievement Award), for individual achievement in the museum and galleries sector, was awarded by the GAMAA advisory committee and overseen by a separate panel of five judges, neither of which he is involved with. Rick said he was incredibly disappointed that someone with aspirations of community representation would go anywhere near this type of behaviour, but said he would get on with his

campaigning, continuing to supply the ratepayers of Division 1 with good quality information.

“I’ll trust the community on this one, I’m sure they can see through this type of smear campaign,” he said.

Another candidate also targeted in the phone poll was Bob McLean. Bob said he had received calls from supporters who had received the calls, who were shocked by it.

“But I don’t need to get involved in that sort of rubbish,” Bob said. “I won’t be wasting my energy on it, my focus is on continuing to run my campaign right up to election day.”

The three other candidates, Rhys Reynolds, Ann Ross and Steve Attrill, also expressed their disappointment and disgust that someone had stooped so low.

“We’ve all been sent guidelines on what is appropriate behaviour and standards, but it seems like it is all open slather at the moment,” said Ann Ross.

Rhys Reynolds said he thought it was ridiculous, and looked to be the actions of an experienced campaigner.

“If that is the means they will go to when campaigning, we don’t need them in office,” he said.

Steve Attrill said while he and Rick had a run in previously, he was not involved in the smear campaign, saying negative politics didn’t benefit anyone. The smear campaign follows recent reports of stolen and vandalised corflutes, with some candidates saying they’ve resorted to setting up and pulling down their corflutes daily.

Cross Dedication service

This is the first year the cross dedication service will be included as part of this year’s Anzac Day service. It will be held at 1300hrs at the Cenotaph at the front of Glass House Country RSL, giving locals the opportunity to make a personal dedication to individual servicemen/ women. Crosses can be purchased from the RSL on the day for $5.00, alternatively phone 5438 7777 (office answering machine).

The service person’s name can be written on the front of the cross, and a message on the back of the cross. On the front of the cross is a poppy, a symbol of life given in the service of one’s country.

The Beerwah/Peachester RSL also have a cross service in the walkway to the Drop Inn Centre on Remembrance.

A special thanks to Glass House local Greg Howard, who has shared with us these original drawings done by his father Laurie Howard while on active duty in the RAAF in Papua New Guinea during WWII.

The Glass House Country RSL sub branch have assisted the 8/9 RAR (Royal Australian Regiment) who is currently serving in Afghanistan by purchasing boxing equipment which has been sent over to them, so they can have a boxing match on Anzac Day. The intention is to have a live link back to the members in Glass House at approximately 1400hrs.

He’s escaped death twice, once during active service in Vietnam, the other only last year, tending his land. Some would call it good fortune, but Glass House Mountains local Ross Horne reckons it’s a little bit to do with luck, and a lot to do with a proud returned serviceman with a passion for life and telling a good yarn.

Ross went over to Vietnam when called up for active service in 1966, and despite losing close mates and being badly wounded himself, Ross was one of 20 Karanne Drive, Mooloolah (next to Medical Centre) the lucky ones to return home alive from active service in 1968.

He said when he was called up for National Service, he felt like he’d won the Ross on duty in Vietnam Phone 5494 7011 lottery.

Ross usually makes the trip down to Enoggera to attend the Royal Australian Regiment’s Anzac Day service, but this year, he’ll attend his first Glasshouse event, something he says he is looking forward to, despite the sorrow the day NEXT MONTH always evokes for him.

Ross will be lucky to be there, following a near fatal accident on his property Lunch Wed to Sun COUNTRY & WESTERN last year, when his restored ’49 Ferguson tractor rolled on top of him.

Long awaited roadworks finally underway

Following months of questions, Glenview residents finally have some answers about impending road works in their area.

Council has advised that preliminary works on the western end of Glenview Road, between the Primary School and Old Gympie Road, have commenced, however it’s unlikely that any construction will commence before the second half of next year.

Project manager Chris Sturgess said the upgrade, which is to improve the road safety, will be undertaken in a number of stages.

He said because of the road’s alignment and geometry, it would take a lot longer to work through all the preliminary design issues.

Divisional councillor Anna Grosskreutz said she had been working behind the scenes for the past four years to get the millions needed to start the project.

“The western end of Glenview road is by far the most dangerous, and my office has received many, many complaints about the condition of this end of the road.

“These works will not only see the road widened, but will also provide a cycle and pedestrian path to the school,” she said.

Cr Grosskreutz said the hold-up had been in the resumption of land needed to undertake the road widening.

She said she was not aware of any plans to undertake repairs to the eastern end of Glenview Road.

“The whole of Glenview Road has been surveyed as part of this project; however the western end is by far the worst in terms of safety.

“The eastern end requires some road resurfacing, and I’m sure this will be looked at in the budget process in the natural course of things,” Cr Grosskreutz said.

To date, council has carried out a site survey, traffic counts, a detailed geotechnical investigation, preliminary design, and impact analysis of the project on the existing road drainage infrastructure.

The next stage of design work will include consulting with local property owners, which is expected to commence next month.

MY PERSONAL CANDIDATE SUMMARY DIV. 1 Each of the five candidates has presented their position on why they would best represent residents of Division 1. This presentation being available in the press, public meetings and their individual brochures.

The candidate selected by the residents will have considerable influence locally over the next four years and the brief summary detailed is the way I perceived their presentations.

1. The youngest candidate, 21 year old Rhys Reynolds, has presented his case with a great cheer squad and enthusiasm however he is ten years too early and requires further life experience.

2. The oldest candidate Bob McLean lacks drive, and an ability to connect.

His slogan - ‘Building Bridges’ - has not been evident, for example his lack of energy to door knock and requiring voters to contact him about what he intends to do for the electorate.

3. Steve Attrill, on his second attempt to be elected, has reasonably presented himself, but has tended to make promises which are not all that viable, and has come across more as a job seeker than a genuine Council representative.

4. Rick Baberowski lost direction in his bureaucratic presentation of what he was endeavoring to convey. I could see him as a Councillor comfortable with working in the bureaucracy but easily persuaded by Council employees.

5. Ann Ross is the only woman, and has offered well considered detail and direction and does not have any outrageous promises; her presentation I thought has been genuine and honest.

We have not been well served by female leaders in the State and Federal Government as of late, however they are not always of their own making but PARTY directed. We must endeavor not to allow political parties to control the Sunshine Coast Council. My suggestion is VOTE 1 for your choice of candidate and allocate your preferences only if you choose carefully.

To contest an election requires courage, work and money. Whoever is successful I congratulate them and thank the runners up for trying.

Gallery award a just reward for effort continued from page 3

Earlier this year, GCNews reported on the GAMAA that Rick received for his achievements in the museums and galleries sector.

Following last week’s allegations that Rick may have awarded himself the prestigious award, we went back to Museum and Gallery Services Queensland, who presented the award, for clarification on the process behind the awards, and those involved in the selection process.

Debra Beattie, the Acting Executive Director of Museum & Gallery Services Queensland said the Gallery and Museum Achievement Awards are an annual, state wide award facilitated by Museum and Gallery Services Queensland, and open to everyone. There are two categories of awards, for organisations and individuals. Rick won an award in the individual category, and was nominated for the award by Edith Cuffe, the CEO of the Abbey Museum of Art and Architecture at Caboolture.

She said the process includes the appointment of an assessment panel, which is put together by Museum Services Queensland, and selected from a diverse mix of individuals from across the museum and gallery community, from both regional and metropolitan Queensland, and interstate. Ms Beattie said the nominations are assessed against a set of four selection criteria including innovation, best practice, leadership and outcomes in community.

“These awards are assessed in a very vigorous and open and transparent manner,” Ms Beattie said.

The judges summary said that Rick’s nomination was for projects he delivered between 2008 and 2001 whilst working at Moreton Bay Council, including the redevelopment of the Caboolture Historical Village, the Bribie Island Seaside Museum, and his involvement with the new Caboolture Hub project.

New circuit to provide greater connectivity A new multi use circuit connecting Dularcha National Park and Ewen Maddock Dam is expected to be completed before the end of June.

The project, which will see signage installed around 20 kms of trails, aims to connect existing trails in the national park and Ewen Maddock Dam with existing roadside trails to provide a circuit experience.

Existing roadside trails are expected to be improved along Rose Road, Tunnel Ridge Road and Ford Road as part of the project, and a horse crossing will be constructed over Tunnel Ridge Road.

The circuit will be able to be used by recreational horse riders, cyclists and pedestrians.

Beerwah Place + Project Western Front Tour The action plans prepared by community members involved in the Place+ Beerwah Project Focus Groups are now being reviewed by Council for feasibility and to ensure they include input gathered from the whole community during the initial community engagement from November – January 2012. Once these are finalised, they will be presented back to the Focus Group members, then to the broader community for feedback in May/June.

If you would like to be involved in the implementation of the plans, please nominate to be part of one or both of the following groups: Beerwah Coordination Group: to develop the governance model for delivering community designated actions. Members of this group will work across the whole Beerwah community, to coordinate the implementation of plans and activities to ensure a vibrant future for the town.

Mooloolah’s Got Talent!

Performances by musicians and dancers lit up the faces of over 90 people at the first Mooloolah’s Got Talent night held at the community hall on Saturday night, April 14.

Headline acts included the SunCoast Ukelele Masters and Bamboo Rockets. Young ones entertained the crowd with rap and modern dance moves then solo musicians and bands showed their flair. Creativity also filled the hall with drawings, games and a digital photography show.

Event coordinator, Natasha Odgers, said the night was all and more than they had hoped for.

“Our group of volunteers wanted to start a new event in Mooloolah partly to expose the talents of our local emerging and established performers.

The extra enthusiasm from the younger ones to perform mixed with the established musicians made the night a great success,” she said.

“We also wanted to create a fun event for all

ages. Some people on the night said they were thrilled to have this event happen as there has been a lack of community events in the hall since the past bush dances and trivia nights.”

To seek election to represent this Division as your councillor has not been a flash-inthe-pan decision for me; it is a life changing one to which I have given much thought and preparation. With my combined education, business and community knowledge, I am confident I have what it takes to represent this Division to its advantage. Many campaigns are won by candidates promising big ticket items — the oldest trick in the book. I have no intention of doing this. But I can say I will endeavour to further promote our iconic Glasshouse Mountains region as I believe that the process of exploring and implementing our eco-tourism options will at the end of the day protect our mountains and provide us as a community with some world class facilities, not to mention jobs for our children.

Rhys Reynolds The first priority of mine if elected on April 28 is to stop the ‘I don’t knows’, the buck passing and the ‘I will get back to you’.

A councillor needs to be able to deliver a fair and honest answer to the constituents without avoiding the hard topics.

Also if the council aren’t going to fulfil a promise, tell the people honestly. This is what I believe in.

The second priority is to finish the un-finished or poorly finished projects. I know I harp on about the bike path between Glass House and Beerwah, however it is a prime example of what needs to be finished. It is council’s job to provide the basic infrastructure that the community needs.

Further over the coast, Bellvista Estate still only has one road in and one road out. This has been the main focus of mine for the previous 12 months of campaigning. A council needs to be proactive, find a solution and make sure something like this never happens again.

In Division 1, we have commercial land sitting dormant. This is because of council’s inability to manage and consult. Any infrastructure project, be it in development, roads or paths needs to be consulted with the people and residents. Because these are the people that will be using this every single day.

Finally, I will offer a strong voice for your concerns, and stand up for what the residents want without fear of what the media will say.

I will support the return of Kerb Side collection, a true 20 per cent discount for pensioners, 10 per cent discount for early payment rates, 2 Free rubbish coupons each year, path and road maintenance/upkeep, broadcasting of Council meetings, Ward offices, Development of 400+ lots must have a second access point for residents, a review of levies, amongst many other stated policies.

I won’t support, a Light Rail that does Not connect to the Hinterland, A Stadium with No Team to play in it, upgrading the Maroochydore Airport and then Selling It. These are some of my policies, but we need a Councillor who is more than cliché and platitudes. You want a Councillor who will stand and fight for you. Someone who won’t give in, at the first bump, but will represent you to Council with Your Real concerns.

I will give this commitment to you, the future holds many things, good and bad; I will be open and approachable to you, I will be firm and committed to the path, I will be active in not just in Division 1 but a true Councillor of the Sunshine Coast.

I truly believe the next three to five years will shape the next 30 for our area. There are 150,000 - 200,000 new residents already planned into the region's growth. More than half are coming to Division 1.

My immediate priorities would be to improve the maintenance standards of our roads and public spaces and to begin work on completing our network of pathways. This will establish the higher standards we need to set in the coming years, and help preserve our more relaxed lifestyles.

Longer term, I have several priorities.

Firstly, it’s common sense that our existing transport network will not cope with the growth.

It's imperative that we make road and rail infrastructure the top priority for the next term.

Secondly, we must upgrade and master-plan our townships to become even stronger, good looking country towns. This needs to be completed in two terms to ensure the townships can cope well with the influx of commuters and the business competition from the new developments.

The alternative is that we turn into car parks.

Thirdly, we need to improve our economic development strategy to create jobs and help diversify our economy. We have two near-empty industrial parks in our division. We need to fill them by developing the right incentive programs to attract relocations and start-ups.

As I've said before, the overall challenge is to avoid becoming another Gold Coast. Our region needs to maintain a real balance between our country character, our environment, and the needs of modern communities.

The time has come to sum up the results of 12 years of community work, the listening, the requests, the concerns, most of all what can be delivered to you and the Sunshine Coast.

I have my nine goals which I have shared with you during the campaign. To nominate to represent you on Council is a privilege.

When we chose the Glasshouse Country we had three criteria, our Church Community, a Rotary Club and public transport.

The community service opportunities are endless. I have spent the last 12 years doing what I have done and enjoyed for the previous 25 years, managing our businesses, being a community leader, engaging in community service and delivering results.

The councillor for Division 1 is only one of 13; therefore you require a strong negotiator to deliver the expectations of your community.

My success is: ‘I have funded my own projects’. I will treat your rate dollars as I have treated my own, delivering the best result for the majority.

I have stated from the start of my campaign, ‘I respect your privacy and would not be knocking on your door uninvited’.

I have been available to meet with you and I thank you for accepting my invitation. I will continue with this approach as your councillor, visiting each community regularly to discuss your issues.

Special guest speaker On April 11 our current District Governor Arthur Witheyman and wife Lion Cynthia visited as a special guest speaker.

Arthur’s theme for his year is ‘Lions Showing We Care’. Arthur spoke about the fact that 80 per cent of our actual Lions District of some 80 Lions clubs plus Lioness and Leo clubs was flooded (there are four Lions Districts in QLD). $600,000 in donations came to this district and $200,000.00 in paint vouchers alone has been provided to home owners in the Ipswich region. Lions express heartfelt thanks to all who assisted.

Incoming club officers Beerwah Lions Club wishes to announce that the Club officer elections for the 2012-2013 year have now been finalised and congratulations go to these members for taking on leadership roles: president Robert Greenwood, secretary Justin Neubecker, treasurer Errol James. Fundraising street stall Mothers Day is on May 13 so visit the Beerwah Lions Auxiliary Street Stall on May 12 for garden plants, books, cakes, gifts etc. The raffle on this occasion is a donated painting of a snowflake hibiscus flower on canvas and, tickets $1.00 each. The stall is located at Gone Bonkers verandah. All proceeds go to worthy charities.

Social events Recently a group of 20 Lions and friends enjoyed some fellowship and combined lunch at Mary Cairncross Park. Many did the lovely forest walk and participated in a forest quiz with two proving to be the most observant and sharing the prize of a Lions Christmas Cake, Ken Loveday and Bernie Partridge. A Lions pudding raffle was won

by Fayonne Partridge.

The Glasshouse Mountains Musicians Club Contributed by Michael Whiticker

Being school holidays a smaller than usual, but nonetheless attentive audience attended the Glasshouse Mountains Musos Club at the Sports Club on Thursday, April 12. Regular performers included Frank Moroney who presented a thoughtful set reflecting on the recent elections, Doug Pullen, Mick Od, Michael Bockow, Paul Fagan, Ian Williams, Brian Ashlin, Ralph King and yours truly. We welcomed back Brian after not having seen him or the Montville Boys Band for a few months. Brian put down the guitar and depended on the reliable Paul, Doug and Ralph to back him with songs from Buddy Holly and the Eagles. Doug Pullen has proven to be a find for the club as he is a most dependable bass player who also enjoys picking up the guitar and presenting his humorous repertoire. Michael Bockow and Paul presented a set featuring their guitar prowess and I especially enjoyed their unplugged version of Hotel California (minus the vocal!). Paul and I continued in the twin guitar vein with some Gillian Welch, JJ Cale, Ben Harper and the Rolling Stones.

The inaugural Musos Award went to Ian Williams for one more of his impeccable sets. Not surprisingly there were six songs of his I hadn’t heard him perform before and although it was hard for me to pick a favourite, during his performance of ‘Dear Prudence’ you could have heard a pin drop, so the audience seemed to be opting for his rendition of that wonderful John Lennon number. A big thank you to Andrea and the Sports Club for supporting the Musos with this new monthly award. We will make sure there are different winners every month, so do please come along and join us on stage at the Musos Club on the second Thursday of the month.

Glasshouse Country Toastmasters

Working out of the Mooloolah Native Nursery, (Holcim Site on Steve Irwin Way), the Green Army is on the march and moving into new areas of self discovery. After a six week educational program with Toastmasters International (sponsored by Glasshouse Country Toastmasters) workers in the Green Army have been challenged, encouraged and given the opportunity to hone their skills in public speaking and communication.

As part of an ongoing commitment by workers in the Green Army program, trainees who work at the nursery learn about horticulture and sustainable environmental practices as well as other invaluable life skills to broaden their prospects of full-time work. Esther Frizzo, Muriel Smith, Robert Thompson and Rosanna Frizzo from Glasshouse Toastmasters have generously donated their time to help this group find better ways to express ideas, communicate with others and practise strategies to combat the fear of speaking in public. Glasshouse Toastmasters Club convenes every second and fourth Thursday of the month at 9.15am at Church on the Rise at Beerwah and welcomes all who are interested in learning more about communicating and leadership skills in a fun and friendly environment.

Caloundra Family History will be conducting a four week Beginners / Refresher Course at the Guide Hut in Arthur Street, Caloundra. The course will commence on Saturday afternoon, April 28, and continue for the following three Saturday afternoons, concluding on May 19. The course runs for approximately two and a half hours each Saturday afternoon and encompasses the following lessons - How to Begin, Record Keeping, Researching Overseas, and Researching in Australia. Cost for the complete course is only $30.00 and includes each participant being given a CD at the end of each lesson. Afternoon tea is also included. This is the third course the group has conducted and past experience has shown these courses fill quickly. We welcomed another new member, Diane Rantall, at our monthly meeting held at the Glasshouse Sports Club on Wednesday, April 18. Welcome Diane.

‘School Days’ was the theme of our meeting as we talked over our memories of school and everyone brought a school day photograph.

The name of the game was to recognise one another from the photographs, a very difficult task indeed. It was a fun meeting with members New member Diane receiving badge chatting and sharing some of their childhood from president Elaine Riches antics.

The next View Club outing, the trip down the Pumistone Passage, on Wednesday, May 2 has been cancelled. In its place we will visit the Glasshouse Mountains Lookout. Bring morning tea and meet at the Beerwah library at 9.30am to arrive at the lookout by 10.00am.

On Wednesday, May 16 the speaker at our meeting will be Olwyn Kerr from The Guide Dogs Association. Please arrive at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club at 11.00am for an 11.30am start.

Our club is a non-profit friendship club that supports the Smith Family chiefly through the Foundation’s Learning for Life program for disadvantaged students. The Smith Family is a national, independent children’s charity helping disadvantaged Australian children to get the most out of their education, so they can create better futures for themselves.

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Chris Johnson Glasshouse Country Baptist Church One of my favourite bible stories is when Elisha, God’s representative, is teased by some teenagers.

They say “Go up baldie,” making fun of his special haircut that marks him out as God’s prophet.

Elisha curses them and two very grumpy female bears appear and kill the youths. I am sure that would have ruined the teenagers’ day.

We read stories like this and we find it hard to reconcile what happens here to how we view God as a God of love.

This has led many people to think that the God of the Old Testament is a vengeful, wrathful, angry God whereas the God of the New Testament is a nice loving God. The difficulty with thinking this way is that Jesus is revealed as the God of the Old Testament. For example in John chapter 1 Jesus is portrayed as the creator of the world - something which only God could have done.

So in other words this vengeful, wrathful God is also the same loving God who is kind and merciful.

So how do we reconcile this? Why does God allow grumpy female bears?

God does this sort of thing because, before anything else God must get our respect - we must realise that God is not a God who can be mucked around with and ignored. He has to show us graphically what happens to us when we choose to either ignore him or rebel against his authority.

God does not need our likeness or our friendship, rather we need God’s.

And that friendship is not on our terms but on God’s terms. Once we have given God respect, then we enjoy God’s friendship.

An unloving God would never warn us, about our actions and choices but the God of the Bible does.

We see that supremely in Jesus dying on the cross for there out love God bears his judgement upon himself.

You Said It Peachester History Committee

100 years of local government Contributed by Helen Page

For the southern part of the Sunshine Coast, formerly Caloundra City, this month’s council election reminds us of a significant historical milestone. The area known as Caloundra City was originally the Landsborough Shire, and it is 100 years this month since the Landsborough Shire came into existence.

Districts from northern Brisbane to the Maroochy River were administered for many years by the Caboolture Divisional Board which had been set up in 1879.

Eventually this region was divided into local council areas, and Landsborough Shire was created in 1912.

The first meeting of the new Shire Council was held at Dyer’s Hall Landsborough on Friday, April 12, and luckily for those interested in local history, the minutes of that meeting were published in the Nambour Chronicle. Mr R McPherson, returning officer, acted as clerk; and he commenced proceedings by declaring the election results for the newly constituted council.

The Shire was divided into six divisions, with two Councillors from each Division.

The Peachester area (Division 4) was represented by Owen Jones and William Andrew Grigor, who were elected unopposed.

The full list of Councillors contains many other familiar names: John Grigor and Job Minchenton (Div. 1), William Robert King and Ludwig Tesch (Div. 2), Alfred Cooke and Joseph Gay (Div. 3), James Carpenter and John Tytherleigh (Div. 5), Allan King and David Rooke (Div. 6).

The first item of business was the appointment of a Chairman. Cr Owen Jones and Cr John Tytherleigh were both nominated, and Cr Tytherleigh was appointed.

The councillors then discussed the need for an employee. ‘The Chairman ... suggested offering a stated sum for a clerk-overseer, say £250, which should secure a good man; there was not enough work for two men.’ After some discussion and several amendments, it was decided to advertise for applicants for this ‘combined office’.

So the council started in 1912 with a permanent staff of one!

They went on to discuss ‘Wages and Rates’.

Wages were ‘unanimously fixed at 8 shillings for labourers, 9s for gangers, teams 30s per day, horses and drays 12s, squarers 10s, and special work as per arrangement.’

The matter of rates caused much debate – should they leave the general rate at 2½ pence in the £, and adopt the valuations of the old shire for this year? Should they raise 18 |

the rate or the valuation? (Has this issue ever been resolved to everyone’s satisfaction?)

Amongst many other items of business, including works approved by the old council and not yet carried out, a decision was made that each Division would have an allowance of £2 so the Councillors could attend to minor works between meetings.

The most interesting aspect of these minutes from 100 years ago is that except for the amounts of money and number of employees, the business and debates are timeless.

The local councillors, then as now, were obviously doing the best they could for their constituents and the Shire.

Rail issues Mooloolah

More and more commuters are now using the rail for work, school or Uni. The Qld Railways Department sealed the Mooloolah Station car park on the eastern side of the tracks when the bus/rail link came into effect a little time ago.

This is used for the rail/bus link as well as ‘all day’ parking. There are only a few places and other ‘all day’ parkers are forced to park on the grass verge behind the cafe and newsagent on the western side of the tracks.

How long will it be before the streets around the station and Martin Rungert Park car spaces are filled with ‘all day’ parkers?

The grass verge on the western side of Mooloolah Station is all railway land and runs the length of Jones Street. This needs to be properly sealed and become a designated ‘all day’ commuter park. The existing park on the eastern side should be for short term parking; for pick up and set down of passengers for bus or train.

Will we have to see the chaotic conditions that once prevailed in Landsborough before something is done?

I would have thought that this issue would have been addressed by the council representative for this area but perhaps that is too much to expect with all their massive duties. Perhaps a response could be sought from the other candidates for division 5.

Just vote 1 for mayor?

It really could become a lucky dip if all Sunshine Coast residents ‘just vote 1’ for a new mayor.

With eight candidates in the running for this position, we could actually end up with a mayor who secured less than 25 per cent of the total votes. It is difficult to see how any one candidate will secure a clear majority of the total votes.

What about the wishes of the other (very possible) 75 per cent of residents who didn’t vote for the very lucky person to get the top job?

Perhaps there is wisdom in selecting your second choice for mayor, thereby guaranteeing a more accurate reflection of total voter wishes.

Gee whiz, if candidates will allow us, we could even number every box on the ballot paper. Now that would be a very interesting result indeed.

It is with pleasure that I’m writing to recognise Bob McLean as the outstanding candidate for Division 1 in the forth-coming Council elections.

Top effort at Club Glasshouse

I am writing this letter to recommend a Top venue that we have right here in our own little corner of the Sunshine Coast. On Saturday, April 14 I was privileged to experience the friendliness and service of ‘Club Glasshouse’. This is the place that I chose to celebrate my 50th birthday with my family and friends. Sharon, the manager and her dedicated staff more than bent over backwards to make my party one of the best celebrations that we have experienced.

Right from when I first contacted the Club about having my party there, Sharon and her staff have been nothing but friendly and fantastic in their efforts to make sure the night was a success.

Being a Mystical Magical fancy dress event, I was allowed to decorate to my heart’s content and nothing was too much trouble. Staff came to the ‘party’ (so to speak) and wore fancy dress themselves on the night, in the theme that I had chosen. Even the courtesy bus driver was fancy dressed! The very reasonably priced and completely ample menu was named by the very clever Madonna in accordance with the theme as well. Throughout the night I received numerous comments from my guests about the excellence of the service and friendly involvement of the staff. So, if ever anyone is in need of a place to celebrate an event, Club Glasshouse is the place to be! Thank you again, Sharon, Sonja, Julie Anne, Vance, Madonna, John and the other young bar staff whose names I didn’t get for helping to make my 50th a night to remember.

Reply to ‘Your Council Vote Important’ GCNews April 18 Firstly, thank you to those who organised the Candidate night, a very informative night.

But I’ll be glad when these elections are over as I am so sick of negative comments from people such as last week’s comments ‘Your council vote important’ by Alan Mountain. As our parents use to say ‘if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all’. Whilst my wife and I didn’t agree with all the comments made by the candidates, they all should be applauded for taking time out of their personal lives in order to try and make our community a better place.

Yes Rhys is young, but is dead-set keen without ‘political spin’. And yes Bob is the senior but still sharp and committed. As we all know, there are elderly members of our community that need to realise when they have lost their edge and it’s retirement time. For some, a simple position, like www.gcnews.com.au

an effective head of a committee is difficult, as they have become out of touch.

Luckily for us, our candidates don’t appear to have lost their edge or have become out of touch in their thinking. We know what we are capable of and it is not up to others to persuade the rest of us who we should or shouldn’t vote for. Regarding the 9 to 5 aspect of this position and family commitments, all candidates acknowledged that they knew of their commitment to this position should they win. And let’s face it, every single person in the community and the Sunshine Coast with at least one family member will have to deal with family commitments at some stage – it is a part of life.

Finally I would like to thank each one of the candidates for their efforts, win or lose, thank you for trying to make a difference and please ignore those arrogant comments from those who don’t know or haven’t tried for this position.

Choosing a candidate I have always found choosing a candidate to vote for in a council election most difficult.

Probably because it’s not party political (usually) like state and federal elections and the propositions and rhetoric from council candidates is often very similar.

To compound this, it is not always possible to get to a ‘meet the candidates’ event. Or perhaps I just don’t try hard enough!

It was refreshing to be invited to meet Rick Baberowski recently near where I live in Peachester. He came to us on a Friday afternoon.

While his views on incomes, development and infrastructure for our region sat very well with me, it was his passion for good planning as well as his knowledge of how council functions and decisions are arrived at that impressed me most.

This fellow could get things done.

The icing on the cake for me that Friday was meeting his 21-year-old son Huxley who accompanied him on the day. If Rick Baberowski can do half as good a job for me in council as he (and his wife) have done with this clever and pleasant young man I will be happy to go to a council election confident in who I’m voting for and why.

Grants available for sun safety Cancer Council Queensland and Queensland Health are calling on Sunshine Coast organisations that need funding assistance for SunSmart initiatives to apply for the 2012 SunSmart Grant Scheme.

The SunSmart Grant Scheme aims to support skin cancer prevention in young Queenslanders and encourage all organisations to adopt a SunSmart policy.

Cancer Council Queensland Community Services Co-ordinator Clare Howard said the SunSmart Grant Scheme aims to assist youth-focused organisations who have limited funds to enhance sun safety for the children in their care.

“The SunSmart Grant Scheme provides grants to organisations on the Sunshine Coast, whose primary focus group is children aged 12 years and younger, to help them purchase items that will enhance sun protection for the children in their care and promote sun safe behaviour,” she said.

“This Scheme will ensure access to sun protection is available within the community and will contribute to the prevention of skin cancer, which is a significant public health problem in Queensland.”

Organisations can apply for the grant and contribute the funding to creating new shade structures (fixed and portable), sun safe hats, uniforms, tree planting to increase natural available shade and sunscreen provision.

“This list is not exhaustive and innovative ideas will be considered,” she said.

Applications close at 5.00pm on June 22.

Funded projects must be finalised by October 31.

Things 2 Do Family Fun Day Car Rally fundraiser to help raise funds for Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors Tegan Lather and her family are at it again!

Last year, 12-year-old Tegan raised over $18,500 for the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital and this year she wants to raise more. Tegan, with the help of family and friends are putting on a great event - a ‘Family Fun Day Car Rally!’

Fusion offers strong blend of writers and readers The Sunshine Hinterland Writers Centre will be presenting a series of readings by local and Brisbane authors during the Cooroy Fusion event, on Saturday, May 12 at the Cooroy Library.

Glasshouse Country Bromeliad Society Inc. Contributed by Bob McLean Phone: 0427 606 240 The mild wet summer and late autumn has provided great growing conditions for bromeliads.

We have so much colour at present with reds, yellows, burgundy and the green leaves trimmed with cream or pink; they may also be banded or speckled.

The one that stands out most of all is the Aechmea nudicaulis. These plants should have been in flower for several weeks and in full bloom for Christmas but this was not to be; instead it is now in flower.

This Aechmea species is one of the most widespread bromeliads in the Americas, found in almost every region, usually as an epiphyte.

The cylindrical upright, fire-engine red and yellow spikes in mid-to late summer are clearly visible from a distance.

The yellow spikes turn to a pale shade of greenish yellow, while the red envelope retains its striking red. This plant can take relatively harsh conditions, and doesn’t have much root system when grown in soil, so is best grown as an epiphyte or over rocks, and looks spectacular when placed in trees.

The sharp red and yellow inflorescence of the more widely grown forms never fails to attract attention from late spring to midsummer.

You will enjoy the year round contribution this species will provide in your garden.

As summer approaches each year, I eagerly await the appearance of my tropical gingers around the garden. Plants which come under this title are the ideal replacement for the cool climate bulbs which often don’t survive more than one wet season. Tropical gingers, however, revel in the hot, wet soil of our summer and autumn.

The genus Globba has an unfortunate name, though when you get to meet the flower, the name loses its impact. They are a member of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae. There are about 35 species of them and many cultivars giving variations of shade and size.

All Globbas die back during the dry, cooler months. Over winter they store their energy in rhizomes and will spring back with vigour when the soil temperature rises in spring. In general they will grow up to 600mm tall and prefer part shade at the edge of garden beds.

The flowers are borne on a pendulous inflourescence. They are a small hook shaped structure, which lasts for a day or so. While these are interesting in their own right, the showiest parts of the flowering structure are the bracts which can last for months and range in colour from magenta through to white.

Some species, such as Globba schomburgkii, produce a bulbil after the flower drops. The bulbils are about 1-3 mm in length and will result in many new plants around the old plant the following summer. These species will quickly colonise parts of your garden and may become a pest if you are not a diligent gardener.

Non-invasive varieties reproduce by rhizome expansion, staying in easyto-mintain clumps. The hardiest of these is Globba winitii, with cultivars such as Dancing Girl, White Dragon and Princess Kim. They never stop multiplying in my garden no matter how much I neglect them. As a cut flower they cannot be beaten. Stems picked in late summer will last 2-4 months inside, even throwing out roots for next summer.

One way to ensure dry conditions over winter is to grow them in containers.

When they die back, tip the container on its side behind the garden shed, then re-pot and re-fertilise in mid spring. Even if you experience a wet winter, the rhizome will get no more water than it needs to survive.

Globbas will survive with little love in reasonably rich soil. Dig in a good amount of compost when planting or replanting. I usually go around the garden soon after they pop their heads up and throw a handful of general purpose fertiliser around the plant. Don’t throw it onto the plant as the fertiliser may burn and rot the rhizome.

The hardest thing is remembering where you planted them so that you don’t fill in an empty spot in the garden during the winter.

A boost for local show jumpers The Sunshine Coast’s Glass House Horse and Pony Club has received a boost for this weekend’s annual Show Jumping Classic in Beerwah after LJ Hooker announced their sponsorship of the event.

The Glass House Mountains Pony Club’s annual Show Jumping spectacular held this Saturday, April 28 will be known as the LJ Hooker Show Jumping Classic after a joint sponsorship by LJ Hooker Corporate and LJ Hooker real estate agents on the Sunshine Coast who contributed $5,000 to the event.

Local Principal, Scott Hull of LJ Hooker Caloundra, Kawana Waters, LJ Hooker Business Broking and LJH Commercial said they would like to see the event become one of the biggest Pony Club Show Jumping events on the calendar and challenge other corporate and local businesses to sponsor a branded Show Jump for future events.

Club President Jule Pitcher said the mission of Pony Club is to encourage young people to ride and to learn to enjoy all kinds of sport connected with horses, to provide instruction in riding and the proper care of their animals and to promote the highest ideals of sportsmanship, citizenship and loyalty, thereby cultivating strength of character and self-discipline.

“We are very proud of the club members, parents and helpers who make our club so great. We are very grateful that LJ Hooker has become involved.”

There are 27 events across nine different height classes in three rings, allowing riders and horses of all abilities to compete.

There are ribbons to sixth place in all events and trophies to third place for Class Championships. LJ Hooker has also donated rugs for the Show Jumping Classic Overall Champion and Local Champions.

Hinterland BMX riders riding strong

The hotly contested 2012 South Queensland Shootout series has now been run and won. This popular event in the BMX racing calendar just keeps getting bigger and bigger every year and with up to 470 riders attending this year’s series it certainly made for some exiting and competitive racing in all age groups.

The Shootout series was run over 10 weeks with riders racing for place points at six different tracks; Ashmore, Ipswich, Redlands, Cooloola, Logan and Toowoomba. To qualify for the end of series awards and final placing's riders were required to attend four out of the six race meets with bonus points being awarded to riders who attended every round.

Nine riders in total qualified from the Hinterland BMX Club with everyone gaining great overall results in their respective classes: Callum Wooler 6th in eight boys and 8th in eight – 10 Cruiser, Mikael Carter 12th in eight boys and 11th in eight – 10 Cruiser , Ben Spratt 4th in 12 boys, Kirrilly Spratt 3rd in 13 Girls, David Hume 14th in Pro Men, Mitchell Beutel 5th in 16 Boys, Rod Carter 4th in 40 - 44 Male Cruiser, Susie Hume 2nd in 45 - 49 Female Cruiser, Paul Hume 2nd in 45 - 49 Male Cruiser.

Riders are now getting back into training mode in readiness for the upcoming South QLD championships, which will be held in Gympie during the June school holidays.

Suncoast Hinterland BMX Club which is located on Connection Road, Mooloolah caters for all abilities and is a family friendly club with both male and female riders aged from four to 45+. Thanks to Bunnings Caloundra for allowing our club to have a BBQ last Saturday morning which was a great fund raiser for us. We would like to show appreciation to IGA Glasshouse and Matilda Fruit Barn for their support and to the Volunteers who came along, without you this day would not be possible so thank you for the regulars and the new faces that came along and did a wonderful job and had some fun as well.

Next week we have a big day with an under 6 carnival with over 600 players plus parents it will be big starting at 9.00am and going through until about 12.30pm then junior games and seniors to follow.

This week we had junior games with mixed results, under 13 girls going down to Maroochydore under 13 boys having a great day out winning 8-0 with Jarred having a scoring spree 5 goals and Nathan, Sean and Joseph scoring one each. Our under 15 girls also had a big result winning 8-0, Four goals to Vivienne two to Chloe and one each to Joanna and Sommer. Fewer than 14 boys struggled for the day but Maroochydore is one of the powers in the competition goals went to William and Jake but the boys do enjoy themselves. www.gcnews.com.au

Contributed by Judy Walker We had a social game on Tuesday. Friday, April 21 we had to play a different format. Not enough bowlers. The winners were James Sammon and Alex Thomson and second was Yorkie, Rosemay Roderick, Judy and Lloyd Walker.

On Saturday we only had 10 players but we had some good bowls and a lot of fun. No rollups are allowed at the moment until we get our future sorted out.

Suncoast Hinterland Softball Association Well, our season started on the weekend and unfortunately we had to cancel the junior games due to the weather but we were able to play our senior games.

The results for this round were Stingrays 1(11) defeated Redbacks (8); Redbacks (16) defeated Bandits (5). Everyone played extremely well considering the weather.

Suncoast-Hinterland Softball Association will be hosting the Softball Festival ~ Suncoast at Mooloolah Valley Multi Sports Complex on Sunday, April from approximately 8.30am to 4.30pm. All proceeds from the day will be donated to The Colby Speare Foundation.

Colby played Softball for the local SuncoastHinterland club, Stingrays. On January, 2010 he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia. Over the last 2 year this brave little soldier has been to hell and back.

This new and exciting event is a softball-based event for everyone, with a fun and exciting Junior Come and Try Clinic for kids, an Open Age OzPitch Tournament (mixed Slow Pitch) for adults including corporate or community teams plus a Celebrity Exhibition Game. Even if you have never played before all levels of skill are catered for.

The OzPitch Tournament’s will be competitionbased and the top three teams receiving prizes.

Each participant will receive a show bag with vouchers, flyers and an aluminum drink bottle.

The Tournament Entry Fee for the OzPitch Tournament is $20.00 for Adults (13+). The Come and Try Clinic is free, however a gold coin donation for The Colby Speare Foundation will be greatly appreciated.

The A Grade and Under 18’s hosted the Bribie Island Warrigals at Beerwah on Saturday and the A Grade got back into the winners list by defeating the Warrigals 42-6 which was the identical score to the 1st round and saw Ashley Sleeman continue his good form this season by scoring 4 tries.

The Under 18’s again competed with the much bigger ‘Bribie Boys’ in the 1st half but could not contain them in the 2nd stanza to go down 46-12.

The women also returned to the winners list with a convincing 44-6 win over Aspley in Brisbane.

This Saturday A Grade and under 18’s have the bye and the women have a home tame at Beerwah v Springfield at 1.30pm and it would be great to see good crowd come along and support the Women and there are Junior Games from 9.00am.

In Memoriam Joyce Richardson - 1919-2012

Glenda, David and their families would like to thank all who sent letters or cards, made phone calls and attended the funeral in tribute to Joyce. Her life since settling in Beerwah allowed her to make many wonderful and caring friends in the organizations with which she became involved. Her knowledge, wit and care were appreciated by so many. The support and understanding given to our families is very much appreciated.
