Hi Everyone
E
veryone in the media knows the old adage – never work with animals and kids but last Saturday Night when Brownie was busy being the GCNews photographer he also decided that you should add Manuel from Fawlty Towers to the list! We arrived early at the event – to take our ‘Out and About’ photos for this week’s edition – and had a quick chat to the actors while they were preparing. They were great – really helpful and said they would be happy to assist with a group shot with Team TKT, who organised the event, before the performance began. However little did we know that once they had their costumes on, there was no doubting that they were seriously ‘in character’. I thought that Brownie was going to have to do a ‘John Cleese’

and start chasing Manuel around the bar area if we were going to get a decent photo. Fortunately Sybil, the voice of reason, was very helpful and managed to bring the group together and Brownie climbed up on a chair to get into the best position to take the photo. Just when it all seemed to be going well – Brownie made the mistake of issuing a basic instruction – if everyone would move closer – mmm not surprisingly Manuel did move closer – closer to the photographer not the rest of the group! He then left us rather quickly to get back to work clearing tables with the parting request if we could send him the photo for his mum in Spain! You can check out the photos and story on page 20.

For even the darkest recess of the club should have perfect mobile phone coverage now that the new Telstra tower has been erected on the Jeffreys Road site at Glass House Mountains. And as we go to print, the modern day world of 5-bar coverage should have arrived. The moment will most likely have been marked by a collective audible sigh of relief from local residents, sounding the start of the new communication era for the district. Except for those poor souls now unable to escape the ‘ringtone of rage’ by hiding out at the Bowlo.

Wilful damage at Sports Club Last Wednesday morning when staff at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club arrived at work they were frustrated to find serious damage done to Field One and to the cricket pitch. Police have reports from local witnesses that at approximately 4.20am that morning a vehicle was driving around the field in a manner to cause serious damage. Sports Club Manager, Kylie Cherry said the volunteers who maintain the fields have done

their best to restore the fields. We hope that they will be available for the upcoming weekend Touch Football Carnival which brings 600 players to the club and for the new Cricket season which starts in August, she said. The club are calling on anyone in the community who may know something about the incident to come forward, either by contacting Kylie at the club on 5493 0055 or the Beerwah Police directly on 5436 5222.

The renaissance of Beerwah as a ‘modern country town’ is forging ahead, with ground works for the long awaited Simpson Street revitalisation project set to commence next week. With the enthusiastic endorsement of local Beerwah businesses, the redevelopment of the street is set to be the shot in the arm that the local community needs to bring back some commercial confidence to the town centre. Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said that the project will be transformational for the town. “The project will give an impetus for the eventual redevelopment of the whole shopping precinct once the new Council planning scheme is in place,” he said. The Sunshine Coast Council has shown their support for the town as a ‘Major Regional Centre’ by committing $4 million to the project – $1 million more than originally planned. The State Government has now also come to the party, with an additional $470,000 contribution to the project through the Local Government Grants and Subsidies Program. Member for Caloundra, Mark McArdle said the project is such an important one for Beerwah’s economy and will provide a fresh and contemporary feel to Simpson Street. “Council has put forward this project as an important one for the region, and we’ve recognised it is a priority, and contributed necessary funding,” Mr McArdle said.
With the works staged along the street, it is expected that sections – starting from the Aldi end – will be finalised by the landscaping contractors as the ground works are completed and move along to start at the next section. This means that the whole of Simpson Street won’t be disrupted at the same time and locals will be able to see the conceptual plans progressively come to life within a short timeframe. “Locals will see some rapid changes to the street, with the civil works planned to be completed by mid-February next year, with the whole installation finalised by July,” said Cr Baberowski. “The streetscaping is designed to make the centre of Beerwah an attractive destination of choice for local shoppers and for people visiting the area.” The roadway will be realigned giving a wider pavement in front of the shops, but still retaining the street parking on the western side of the road. Some sections will be wider allowing for alfresco dining and informal meeting points for shoppers. There will be stylish furniture and fittings, seating walls and shelters along the street, matching in with the ‘modern country town’ theme. A major positive of the power infrastructure being placed underground is that the street will be free of wires and poles, and a range of lighting options – including accent lighting, shadow lighting and uplighting of trees – will be possible.
Celebrating the legacy of a local legend Over the past few years Glenview State School has developed an impressive reputation for their entries into Wakakirri. This national competition celebrates learning via the creation and sharing of stories. Schools create a seven minute piece made up of dance, song, film, art and writing to be performed, screened and displayed to audiences across the country. This year Glenview chose to dedicate their story to a local legend Steve Irwin, whose passion and drive to preserve wildlife still lives on in the hearts of each student. The piece shows snippets of Steve’s life: how he met Terri, his famous crocodile feeding performances, life as a zoo keeper and the change in management at the zoo. The story highlights Steve’s passion and drive to save animals from different predators such as poachers, scientists and whalers. After Steve’s death, Bindi carries on his legacy and becomes the new ‘champion’ for wildlife. Glenview State School feels strongly about conservation and preservation of injured wildlife. Students participated in ‘Khaki Day’ last November as well as holding a free dress day this year to help raise money for Australia Zoo’s Animal Hospital. The school has a close affiliation with Phil O’Hanlan from the Wildlife Warrior Team and the students ran a school bandage drive to help relieve the increasing costs to aid the Animal Hospitals injured wildlife.
Phil O’Hanlan explained that the bandages are extremely important as they use an enormous amount while treating animals. They get them dirtier more quickly than humans, so they need changing more often, he said. Wakakirri students held a competition between classes and encouraged the community to bring as many new or used bandages, colleting a startling 143 in total. Melanie Osborne, teacher for Year 1 and 2 class and Wakakirri Co-ordinator said it was great to see her Year 1 and 2 students really trying hard to make a difference “I had one or two students use their own hard earned savings to purchase bandages for the Animal Hospital,” she said. “There are 87 students involved in the Wakakirri team from Year 1 – 7 and they will perform on Friday, July 26 at Caloundra Civic Centre against other schools around the region. “The students have been rehearsing since February and are bursting at the seams to finally get to show the judges and the audience their touching story on the life and legacy of Steve Irwin. I am incredibly proud of the team and how hard they have worked,” said Melanie. www.gcnews.com.au
The lighting will be designed to create a sense of destination at night. Cr Baberowski wants to make sure that the work causes as little disruption as possible to local businesses. “We will be constructing ramp accesses into the businesses as the underground power trenching moves along the street, as well as leaving the overhead poles and wires active until each business is connected to the underground power, meaning that there should be little disruption to power.” Over 60 advanced native street trees will be planted, giving a soft, green and shady feel to the street and making the area look inviting from all approaches. Extra parking will be added across Simpson Street from Aldi and the planners are still giving consideration for a motorhome / caravan park close to the centre of town. Two wide raised pedestrian crossings will connect across Simpson Street, serving as safe places to traverse as well as traffic calming / speed reduction devices. A large greenspace area (currently across the road from Suncorp) is planned to be a town square-like focal point, connected across to the green space in front of First national Real estate by one of the wide street crossings. Within the area, plans are afoot for a ‘major attractor’ feature – i.e. something which will bring people into the area and create a space where people will want to gather and utilise. During the project, Council are committed to an approach where local businesses will be able to remain open and trading the whole time.
Beerwah businesses getting an update on the Simpson Street project As part of this commitment, Council will have a Trader Liaison working specifically with the businesses in the town centre, making sure that their concerns and issues are promptly dealt with. The Council will also be communicating via a regular ‘E-Blast’ electronic newsletter, keeping businesses and interested persons up-to-date with the project progress. Already, business owners have noticed a change in the attitudes of local shoppers. “People are already starting to say that Beerwah is changing for the better,” said Shannon Greenwood from Hinterland Body and Soul. “People are seeing the Council workers around
Rural fire brigades hold combined group field day On Sunday, July 14, the Caloundra and South Maroochy Rural Fire Brigades conducted a combined group Field Day.
The training exercise was hosted by the Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade on Roys Road and firefighters from the Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade participated on the day. Combined teams of firefighters were deployed into the surrounding forestry plantation to conduct a number of exercises. These included navigation tests, water supply exercises using ‘collar’ tanks and drawing water from natural formations such as dams and streams. Teams also carried out practice burns in the forests and grasslands of the plantations. Some 130 rural volunteer firefighters participated in the Field Day exercises. They came from 25 brigades up and down the Sunshine Coast from Eumundi and Black Mountain to Beerwah. It was a good opportunity for firefighters to hone their skills and develop new ones for fighting bushfires. The exercises were conducted through the establishment of an actual Incident Management Centre, as if it were a real fire event. These annual exercises help prepare the area's volunteer firefighters for the coming fire season. It is these volunteers who contribute their own time for both training as well as actual bush fire events, who are our first line of defence against the threat of bushfires on the Sunshine Coast. town maintaining and replacing things. It’s very noticeable and a good sign.” Cr Baberowski said that the town centre is now considered as a ‘Precinct’. “As such, it now has a Precinct Manager ensuring that the area is managed and maintained in an integrated and cooperative approach by the various sections of Council. “This will result in better outcomes for the look and feel of the whole town from now on. “And I’m looking to see how we can extend the streetscaping treatment down Simpson Street from Aldi’s to the Roberts Road roundabout, creating a great entry into our town,” he said.
Learn the secret to weight loss with Kirstee Health Chat of Fitness Matters Nutrition is the secret to weight loss What do all those tables, graphs and listings on food packaging actually mean? Once upon a time a large percentage of our food intake was fresh healthy meat, fruit and vegetables – there were no labels on those. Now as you browse the supermarket aisles you notice a lot of cardboard boxes and packaging covered in numbers, figures creating pure confusion! Adequate nutrition is a vital aspect of life. What we put into our bodies acts as fuel, so just like your car the better quality the fuel, the better your body performs and you can’t run on empty for too long. We all struggle at some point in our lives with nutrition and food choices, whether we are trying to lose weight, run a marathon, or gain muscle mass. Well, when Minister for Disability Services Tracy Davis popped in for a visit and afternoon tea with the residents, staff and management committee of Lavally Lodge at Glass House Mountains, she was definitely welcomed with open arms (and some hand-holding) by the residents. She was given a thorough guided tour of the centre and was made well aware of how happy the residents are, even being introduced to Bella ‘the dog’ who is an important household member. The Minister was on the coast that day and so took the opportunity to join the member for Glass House, Andrew Powell who was keen to show the Minister what an excellent facility Lavally Lodge is. Minister Davis also spent some time talking to the media on the day about the roll-out of the NDIS scheme and the importance of allowing people with disabilities to have choices and control of their lives. Assuring the media that while Queensland was not one of the states to get on board as quickly as some others, Queensland will not be falling behind, as there is adequate time to roll the program out smoothly. Up until recently, Lavally Lodge had been supported primarily on fundraising efforts undertaken by the Catholic Parish. It became apparent to them that this funding would soon not be sufficient to keep Lavally Lodge operating and so they contacted the Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services, who recognised the good work they were doing. It was determined by the Department that the facility was operating under their specific guidelines for this type of accommodation and would be entitled to seek funding for their continuation. On the day, Father Kevin Smith acknowledged the importance of the funding the Department had agreed to supply and was testament to the great work that had been done over the years by those involved in the running of Lavally Lodge. Andrew Powell was also kept busy by the residents, who were keen to share with him what they most enjoy about their home. Andrew said that he was pleased to be able to bring the Minister of Disability Services with him – so she could see first-hand the great work that is being undertaken by those involved in running Lavally Lodge and how much the facility meant to the residents.

Green waste cost increase Recently GCNews received a letter from Carole Tait from Glass House Mountains about the dramatic increases in waste charges. We thought we should follow this up with Council and the Resource Recovery Centre at Beerwah and see what else we could find out about the increase this time. A Sunshine Coast Council spokesperson advised GCNews that they remain the middle of the pack on pricing in relation to the dumping of green waste. “However we can’t avoid price increases if the service is to become sustainable over the long term,” the spokesperson said. “Until now council has charged 54% below the actual processing cost for large loads and 43% below the actual cost for processing medium loads. “This is unsustainable – you can’t keep going in that direction over the long term, especially when a new landfill will have to be built at a cost of up to $20 million. “Council has altered its pricing structure for green waste with the cost of mulching green waste now incorporated into the cost of disposal. “Previously council had charged customers for this mulch however it is now free. “In addition to this, the recent wet summers have led to a surplus of green waste received by council at its transfer stations and as a result of this, the cost of processing this extra green waste has risen.
www.gcnews.com.au
By Lea Parkes
“In regards the charges, it costs $5.00 to take a car boot load of green waste to the tip and $15.00 for a small trailer load.” We spoke to Trish Cashin from Community Recycling who has the contract to run the Beerwah Resource Recovery Facility and she said that the pricing is set by Council and is consistent across all the Council’s facilities. Trish explained that cost of mulching green waste can vary dramatically – and is impacted by the quality of the level of contamination. If someone dumps green waste that contains foreign matters such as metal it can cause significant damage to the mulching machines and the on-going maintenance cost of machinery then directly impacts on the cost of mulching. “Here at Beerwah we have been fortunate that our locals are vigilant and ensure that monitoring and sorting is done before they drop off waste – I feel that our locals take pride in the Recycle Centre and generally like to do the right thing,” Trish said. “We try as much as possible to give locals advice on how they can reduce the cost of getting rid of their waste, the key tip is always about load segregation – if you have sorted out the cardboard, metal, e-waste then you will not have to pay so much. “In regard to green waste, the secret is all in how you pack your load, if you cut tree branches and cutting them back into smaller pieces you can fit more in your trailer – which means a smaller load then less cost,” Trish said.

With feature artists Sera Loons and the Bamboo Rockets, this will be a night not to be missed. Performers of all types, ages and styles will have a chance to show their talents at this vibrant community event, which has been a great success over the past year and a half. The last Mooloolah Performing Our Arts Off was a hoot in hula style. There were ukuleles in abundance, lots of colorful shirts and hawaiian leis. The hall was covered in palm fronds to set the hula scene, regardless of the fact that it was about 10 degrees outside. There was a full line up of acts with great diversity in the age and genres, new performers and trusty regulars. Feature acts, Uke Crazy People and the Bamboo Rockets had the crowd having a ball on the dance floor. The youngest performer was nine-year-old Jay Jay with a rocking solo performance.
The audience was also entertained by the unique performance by the hard rock acapella band, the Sinners Circle. A big thanks goes to MC Tim in his top hat and the amazing helpers in the kitchen. For the upcoming event, you can book a table with Thunderbirds Café for meals. A bar will be provided by the volunteer event organisers to raise funds for future events and to support local emerging artists There will be prizes for best rockabilly get up plus kids and adults drawing and games for amusement at the tables. Lions News
Contributed by Bob Banner The July dinner meeting of the Beerwah Lions Club was an opportunity for the Lions to begin handing out assistance to worthwhile causes in the community. The necessary funds being raised through advertising sales in the Lions business directory. Darren Seeley from the Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade was pleased to receive a cheque for $1,000.00 from Club President Rita Sanderson.
Lions President Rita Sanderson with Darren Seeley from the Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade
In thanking the Lions, Darren said the money would be put to good use in helping the brigade protect the community. The Lions have more donations ready to hand out to other groups, who unfortunately were not able to attend the July meeting. Guest Speaker was Ursula Starkovsky who spoke of the recent summit held in Mackay. The aim of the summit was to determine a pathway for Queensland’s future over the next 30 years. The challenges facing humanity include living on a planet whose resources we are rapidly using up. It’s something we all need to pull together on, with emphasis on changing people’s perceptions from ‘I’ to ‘We’. She also spoke of the challenge being presented by our changing lifestyle, with diseases like diabetes showing an alarming increase. Anyone interested in learning more could jump on the internet queenslandplan.qld.gov.au All Queenslanders are urged to have their say on these issues. The Lions still have a few membership vacancies to fill. Anyone interested should contact membership chairman Bob Banner on 5494 9080.

We also have a few remaining copies of last year’s Children’s Book ‘The Witches from the Hinterland and Other Stories’ reduced to $7.50 also available at Beerwah Newsagency. Our homework topic ‘A Review of either a book or a movie’ brought innovative and entertaining contributions from Bob on ‘Moulin Rouge’, Paul - ‘The Great Gatsby’, Maureen - ‘Searching for the Secret River’ by Kate Llewellyn. Sue - ‘The Memory Keeper’s Daughter’. Wil did a preview of the last episode of ‘Midsomer Murders’ and Steve - Satirical verse on a political party. Wonderful visit
On a recent visit to Landsborough Museum, I was impressed with the wonderful displays, the photos of the displays and photographs of the early pioneers in the Stan Tutt Reading Room. The only thing that was disappointing was that there was no photo of Stan Tutt on the wall – hopefully this is something that might be rectified in the future. M D Stevens Caloundra
Top pizza and customer service
My family have just tucked into a couple of very yummy pizzas on State of Origin Night from 7 Secrets Pizza at Glass House Mountains. They’ve had a fantastic special running for Origin nights. Their pizzas are delicious, and taste authentic (or so my wife tells me) she reckons it’s almost like having a little slice of Italy on your plate. So many local businesses are doing it tough these days, I just wanted to say a big thumbs up to a great family owned local business who not only have awesome pizzas, but incredible customer service too! Bowel Scan
The Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains Inc. would like to acknowledge and thank Beerwah Soul Pattinson Chemist, Auscare Pharmacy-Glasshouse Mountains, and Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy for their participation and support of our annual Rotary Bowel Scan Program. This year there were 26 positive test results from the Rotary Clubs on the Sunshine Coast which require follow-up testing. Out of these two were from our area. As you can see, it is very worthwhile doing the test each year; the sooner any problems are detected and investigated the better. Early detection can help save lives, so encourage family and friends to be in it next year. George McKenzie Rotary Club of Glass House Mountains
Tara a State Champion!
Glasshouse Country Christian College student, Tara Fissenden, has been training hard in preparation for the recent Netball State Championships. Tara is now our new State Champion. She very much enjoyed her experience playing in the 11 year Girls Sunshine Coast Netball team at the Queensland State Championships held in Caloundra. Tara’s team worked really well together Tara with her gold medal and were unbeaten at the Carnival. Tara excelled, playing in all seven games at goal defence and finished the day totally exhausted but exhilarated at becoming a state champion. Many shooters were frustrated by Tara’s defence in and around the goal circle where she stopped the opposing team scoring points. Tara has been playing netball almost half her life and dreams of one day playing for the Firebirds.
Super Strawberry 2013 Round 3
Oaklands Farms are on a roll, winning again in Round 3 with a strawberry weighing in at 135 grams. It is great to have the big strawberry farms participating in the competition, and we thank them for their support; but we should remind GCNews readers that the Super Strawberry Competition is open to everyone. In the past we have seen a backyard gardener walk away with the championship! You could even be cultivating some plants in a pot. Round 4 will close at 4.00pm on Friday, July 26. Bring in your entries for weighing and recording at Coochin Creek Fruitgrowers’ Co-op at any time during the week. The Super Strawberry Champion will be announced at the Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival on Saturday, August 24, at the Beerwah Sports Ground. Thanks to the Co-op and Beerwah Hotel for their assistance with the competition again this year!

Kids & Parenting Get set for Prep
www.glasshousemountainsridingschool.com.au
Children born from July 1, 2008 through to June 30, 2009 are eligible to start Prep next year. Now is the time to start planning and enrolling them into school. To assist in the process, Landsborough State School is holding a series of Open Days so families have the opportunity to come and find out the answers to all the questions they might have. The first Open Day is on Wednesday, August 14 from 9.00am – 10.00am. This is a whole school open morning and is a wonderful opportunity to experience a typical day at Landsborough State School. You may observe and interact with students and their teachers in their dynamic learning environment, or tour the school grounds and discover all of the wonderful facilities on offer. The next Open Session is on Wednesday, September 4, from 6.00pm – 7.00pm for a Prep Parent Information Night. During this session, all aspects of the Prep program will be discussed. Current student leaders, teachers and the Principal will guide you through the exciting opportunities that exist within the school. This is the time to meet the teachers, ask the questions and find out more about the Prep program for next year. Finally, on Wednesday, October 23 from 9.00am – 10.00am is the school's Step Into Prep Student Session. This is exciting for the littlies as they get their chance to experience school life and spend time in the Prep classroom with the teachers. They can even wear their school uniform if they wish. Attending this session helps children become more familiar with the school, the classrooms and the teachers and may help ease those first day jitters. Students will also receive a Get Set For Prep at LSS Pack. For more information about the Open Days or enrolment contact Landsborough State School phone 5436 2777.

USC occupational therapy clinic helps children
Occupational Therapy students at the University of the Sunshine Coast are helping children across the region through a new campus clinic that also provides services in homes and schools. The new Occupational Therapy Child and Youth Clinic is an initiative of the University and is funded by Health Workforce Australia as an Australian Government initiative. “Occupational therapy services help people to participate in the activities that occupy their lives and, for children, much of their time is spent either learning or playing,” clinic dircetor, Dr Greber said. Dr Greber said the clinic operated on campus at Sippy Downs on Fridays, providing specialised interventions that address areas of development causing dysfunction in daily activities. “These include areas such as neuromuscular, fine motor and visual perceptual development, perceptual-motor delay and sensory processing issues, where those factors impact on a child’s ability to participate in everyday life,” he said. The clinic will have an official opening this month. For enquiries about the clinic, email cgreber@usc.edu.au.

with the Superdads
By Peter Voigt (rhythm guitarist / vocalist for The Superdads) Fatherhood is one of the most rewarding train journeys a man can choose to board. Once on that train, you are instantly plunged into a world of unknowns. From nappies that don’t work; to a little screaming bundle without an off switch; to a testing teenager who questions everything. When I started my journey a decade ago, I promised that I’d attempt to be the best dad possible. I realised it would be hard work but I was ready for the challenge. One of the biggest mistakes that I’ve made time and again in my endeavours to gain an A+ on my daddy report card is trying too hard. I think it’s a mistake that men tend to make with many aspects in life. We quite often think that bigger is better. We’ve been geared to believe that a great outcome requires huge effort. With fatherhood this isn’t always the case. Often with parenting it’s the little things that make a difference. Things like playing a game of badminton with my daughter; bowling a few overs to my son in the backyard; a family board game around the table; having a crazy blindfolded tasting test after dinner (the kids loved this). While it’s great and important to do the big things like family holidays and fun park/movie outings, it’s all the little things that make you a great dad. And it’s these little things that your child will remember and really appreciate. It’s these little things that will provide the food for your child to grow. This week my challenge to you is do something little with your kids every day. We’re all busy, but little things don’t take much time, and they add up to something very big. The Superdads – we are a bunch of guys who love playing music and have formed a band. Their name came from something their guitarist Pete said once… “I don’t just want to be an average dad, I want to be an exceptional dad” – the idea resonated with them. www.superdads.com.au www.gcnews.com.au
Generation of ‘screenagers’ facing obesity
Parents who want their children to be physically active do not have to be perfect role models of fitness, according to new research conducted by the University of the Sunshine Coast. USC Lecturer in Psychology Dr Rachael Sharman and Honours student Jennifer Bowers have found that parental support – like taking children to training – has a much greater influence on children’s fitness levels than how physically active the parents are themselves. Dr Sharman and Ms Bowers recently surveyed the parents of 144 children to determine what motivates children to be physically active. The children were aged five - 13 and involved in a range of Sunshine Coast sporting clubs. The researchers also investigated the total time children spend in front of technology-based screens, their overall physical activity, and how these factors affect their weight and total Body Mass Index (BMI). Dr Sharman said the study revealed that parental involvement was by far the biggest motivator for physical activity of children. “Just because a parent is fit does not mean the child will be. Our research suggests it has virtually no impact on the level of a child’s physical activity,” Dr Sharman said. “We found the largest driver for improving and increasing a child’s physical activity is parental support, not role modelling. “This support involves driving a child to lessons, participating with them, and encouraging them, for example, cheering from the sidelines while the child performs physical activity. “If parents genuinely want to improve their child’s fitness, they need to be there to support them along the way and reward them with praise.” “There is no such thing as ‘growing out’ of childhood obesity. In fact, in general, obese children have a higher risk of being obese in adulthood,” she said.

Rick Baberowski Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council P: 5420 8987 Waste Management
The Glossies Congratulations to the winners and nominees recently recognised for their sustainability achievements at the illustrious Glossy Awards evening. The Glossies honour local trail blazers who take on sustainability challenges and make a real difference on the Sunshine Coast. It would be great to see more local nominations from our area at next year’s awards as there’s a number of dedicated sustainability champions, businesses and groups who could be well placed to take out an award at next year’s Glossies.
Tough Mudder In mid-August our region will be hosting what is shaping up to be the most successful Tough Mudder competition in Australia. There are already 25,000 entries from around the world and that means quite a bright spotlight will be on Caloundra and surrounding areas like Glass House Country. I’d like to put a call-out to the community to get a Glass House Country team together so that we can make sure that as hosts of the event we are part of the competition too.
Out and about I’ll be in Landsborough at the CWA Hall on Friday, July 26 from 1.00pm to 3.00pm, feel free to drop in and catch up about what’s happening in the community.
Jenny McKay
Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 Martin Rungert Park
Our well-loved Martin Rungert Park in Mooloolah is under the community radar at the moment regarding the large trees that feature in the park. It’s a difficult situation as there are locals in the community who would like to see some of the trees removed as they feel the park is too dark and doesn’t seem safe, while other locals want the trees to stay for their beauty and the shade coverage they provide, particularly in summer. As a community, we need to come up with a compromise about what to do and I’m happy to meet with locals on site to work on a solution and make a decision on Thursday, August 1 at 9.00am (after the Mooloolah breakfast meeting). I’ll also be at the Mooloolah Community Centre luncheon on Friday, July 26 from 11.30am and will take on board any of your ideas on how to approach the matter.
Next Mooloolah meeting
Also to be discussed at the next Mooloolah breakfast meeting is the planned Glenview Road upgrade. We’ll have a Council staff member along to talk through the timeline, budget and design for the road upgrade. See you at Thunderbird Café bright and early at 7.30am on Thursday, August 1.
Hovard Road Quarry
Council has completed a detailed design for the six hectare site of the old quarry on Hovard Road at Bald Knob. The aim is to have more regular grades on the site and better access points for vehicles (for maintenance purposes). Remedial work involving earthworks and the installation of a bund wall is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Once the remedial work is completed, Council will then be able to consider management options for the future of the site. www.gcnews.com.au

Disposing of the regions waste in a safe and environmentally sound way is a high priority for Council. Significant investment at Caloundra landfill, in the order of millions, is being made this financial year and the work will improve infrastructure, increase efficiencies and ensure best management practices are followed. The principle behind the way council currently sets charges for waste is that the charges represent the true cost of disposing of that waste. There is little value in distorting the cost of waste disposal with subsidies as that effectively means charges are increased elsewhere (such as on wheelie bins). Only a very small proportion (0.03%) of the region's waste is illegally dumped and that means the vast majority of Sunshine Coast residents do the right thing when it comes to disposing of their waste. There's no easy answer, but it's never OK to dump waste.

Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club Since the ‘Kylies’ have taken on the roles of club manager and second in charge at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club almost five months ago, they have been focused on making improvements to the club’s operations. Club manager Kylie Cherry said they have been getting a great response from locals and are happy to see quite a few new faces coming through the door. “Kylee and I are enjoying the challenge in our new roles and really appreciate the ongoing invaluable support we have received from club members, the committee and the community," she said. “This year we had the State of Origin nights which were popular with the locals; each game drew bigger crowds with a fantastic turn out and great night for the decider.
“With the response being so good – we will definitely do them again next year.” Over the years, the club has always offered meals on a Thursday and Friday night and these continue to be popular, in particular the Thursday night for families. Having now added a ‘kids corner’ in their restaurant, parents can sit back and enjoy conversation whilst watching their children happily occupied colouring and creating. “We have now also decided to expand our food service and do a ‘Sports Bar Menu’ which is available all day, every day. It’s great for locals or visitors who want to pop into the club for lunch or throughout the day to grab a quick meal or a coffee and cake,” Kylie said.
just a club
The menu includes toasted sandwiches (Chicken and Cheese or Ham and Cheese) for $4.00, Spaghetti Bolognaise $10.00, Lasagne $10.00, Soup of the Day (served with Crusty Bread) $6.00, Garlic Bread $3.00, as well as Coffee and Cake of the day for $5.50. The sports bar is spacious and has plenty of comfortable table seating, both indoors and out on the deck for members and guests to sit back and relax. You can select your favourite songs on their juke box, enjoy the view across the sporting fields and indulge in a hearty home cooked lunch or coffee and cake. If it's been a while since you dropped into the club - call in, say g'day and check it out for yourself.

48 Simpson Street, Beerwah 5496Loser? 0582 www.24nutrition.com.au Are you our next Biggest Beerwah resident Bianca chose to join 24 Nutrition’s eight week weight loss challenge as part of her inspirational journey to improve her lifestyle and health. “I loved the accountability of weighing in each week, however it was really the information in the sessions that completely altered the way I think about certain foods and how I eat,” she said. Bianca lost over 10kg during the challenge, winning first place, while Leah and Wayne from Caboolture took 2nd and 3rd along with a share of the $400.00 prize pot. Wellness Coach Anita Cassidy explains the ongoing popularity of the local challenge. “Losing weight is much easier with a supportive group, plus we teach people how to make better food choices, to snack sensibly and how to maintain healthy eating for life.” “Many people don’t realise that 80% of permanent weight loss is actually down to nutrition and only 20% down to exercise”. Whilst the Challenge sessions don’t include exercise, 24 Nutrition does offer free FitClub sessions outside of the Challenge for those participants looking for a complete healthy active lifestyle. “The eight week course costs $49.00 and this funds the prize kitty which is shared between the three people that have lost the most weight and centimetres at the end of the eight weeks,” says Anita. The next Weight Loss Challenge starts this week at 24 Nutrition, Beerwah. Limited spaces, register now on 5496 0582 or visit www.24wellnesswlc.com.au

Pain in the back? Is your back often stiff and sore? Does it take a while to get out of bed in the mornings? Have you given up hobbies you once enjoyed because the pain just isn’t worth it? Do you feel older than you really are? If so, we may be able to help. It is estimated that approximately 85 per cent of the population will experience low back pain at some stage of their lives. Despite its prevalence, it is by no means normal to experience any level of pain on a regular basis. The normal state of the human body is vibrant, healthy, and pain-free. If you are not feeling this way, something is pushing your body away from normal. We are all well aware that diet and exercise are key factors in keeping our bodies feeling great. What most people don’t know about is Spinal Subluxation, a term chiropractors use to describe dysfunctional vertebrae in the spine. This is a very common condition that pushes the body away from functioning normally and feeling great. Subluxations can be caused by old or new injuries, but most often are caused by repetitive stresses of everyday life. Low back and pelvic subluxations can also lead to further symptoms, such as hip and knee pain, or digestive troubles. There are many causes of back pain, and each cause requires a specific treatment. If your back pain is caused by Spinal Subluxation, the chiropractic adjustment is the only therapy that will correct the cause. To find out if Spinal Subluxation is the cause of your decreased quality of life, call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today, or visit www.adjusttolife.com.au Beerwah 5494 0499 or Maroochydore 5443 4545 JULY 24 2013 |

Some of us are called to be teachers, doctors, social workers, preachers...and others are called to be mothers and grandmothers. This column is written in loving memory and honour of John’s darling mother, who passed away peacefully in her sleep this week. Everyone called John’s mother ‘Nan’. Nan was the dearly loved wife of 60 years to Pop, amazing grandmother to our kids (and their kids), a brilliant communicator, a loyal friend, and devoted mother to John and his big sister Jen. Nan valued relationships and filled our lives with so many good things, good food, laughter and song. Words just can’t express how much we are going to miss her. Nan sang harmonies beautifully and could play a mean organ. She could play any hymn in the hymn book, and when our kids would ask, “Nan...play this one”...she would... and then they would choose another...and she would play that one. She never said no. As her hands would glide over the keys, her feet would move across the pedals in unison. She loved to play and we loved to hear her play. She would often play and sing an old favourite hymn, ‘Blessed Assurance’. As the family gathered around her bedside this past week Nan was still singing this song right to the end. Where she was weak in body she was
strong in voice and confident in spirit. Nan knew in her heart that God was real and that His love is unfailing. Oh it’s so easy to praise God and thank God when things are going well, but can a person really sing praises ‘all the day long’? What about the bad days, the dreadfully sad days, the days when we just don’t feel like it? I believe that in these moments, it is important to remember and be thankful for the good times. God isn’t as concerned with how we look on the outside – it is with the attitude of our heart that He cares about. We have to look for God in the little things so we can see Him in the big things. Trials will continue in our lives, but when we belong to God, there is a blessed assurance that God will carry us through those times. This is the hope – the absolute certainty – that God will do good to us in the future; and the blessed assurance knowing that God holds all our days and all our tomorrow’s in His hands. ‘This is my story; this is my song, praising my Saviour all the day long’. In loving memory of Marion Hobbs 1929 - 2013

Crows of Glasshouse Country beware!
Get out your old clothes, shoes, hats and handbags, grab a bale of straw and get your creative energies flowing. As part of this year’s Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival, they want everyone to join in the fun and be part of the inaugural Beerwah Charity Sports Scarecrow Competition. Streets are set to come alive in the weeks before the August 24 charity sports day, with colourful and quirky scarecrows popping up all over Glasshouse Country. Janelle Steensen, the competition organiser says that prizes will be awarded for the scariest, the funniest, the most creative and the people’s choice. “We’re asking residents, shops, offices, schools and community groups to get involved and celebrate their sense of fun,” said Janelle. “Entry into the competition is free and entries need to be in to me by August 10. “We’ve put some hints and tips for making scarecrows onto the Beerwah Charity Sports Facebook page to get people started. “The basic competition rules are also on the Facebook page – so take a look and give me a call to register,” she said. The Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival Facebook page can be found by searching for ‘Beerwah Charity Sports Day’ in Facebook. Janelle can be contacted on 0439 970 416 – please leave a message if she doesn’t answer (she’s out making scarecrows).

Beerwah Ladies Golf
Contributed by Jenny Kelly We dodged a few showers on Thursday to play the last of our Honour Board events for 2013. A field of 44 players competed in our Foursomes Championships, played over 27 holes. We are very pleased to have Smiley's Jewellers as our sponsors for this big day, so not only were the girls vying for the prestige of winning the Championship, they were also keen to win vouchers to use in Tania's beautiful shop. Our major winners on the day were Cathy Stone and Andrea Campbell who shot a score of 129 Gross, followed by runners up Cindy Godfrey and Karen Kemp on 140 Gross. Winners of the Nett event were Monica Dangerfield and Jen Kelly who came in with a score of 111.75 Nett. Runners up on 116.25 were Noelene Annakin and Margaret Zonca. Barbara Whitfield and Sue Williamson won the 18 Hole Nett with a score of 77, while the last 9 was won by Joan Harvey and Ruth Parish with 38.25 Nett. Number 2 proved as elusive as even with nobody hitting the green to claim the nearest to the pin. Pat Plowman and Gail Gundry took out 5, Monica and Jen were closest on 16 and Cathy and Andrea took out the 18th. I'm sure all the winners will enjoy spending their vouchers and we thank Tania once again for her generous sponsorship.
Mooloolah Valley Bowls Club

Eileen’s new bowls had a run and are shaping up nicely. Friday was washed out. Saturday winners in pairs was Lloyd Walker and Bob Patten and in triples Ian Henderson, Judy Walker and Eileen Pierce. Thanks to Leigh (visitor) for filling in. Mixed pairs draw is up. Please check and start play as soon as possible.
Tennis players – get ready for a new season of tennis
Contributed by Kerry Roach The Friday junior tennis competition will kick off on Friday, August 9 from 3.30pm onwards. This season we have lots of tennis to play and lots of fun to be had for beginner players through to A grade players. There’s even an opportunity for some parents to take to the court. We still have vacancies for players including any child who is new to the sport. If you are interested in registering for the spring season or would like any further information please contact Dawn Wendt 5494 1085 or Katya 5494 9464 mobile (0417 625 194). Like all other sports played in the community, our tennis competition at Landsborough relies heavily on volunteers to organise and coordinate the sport. Parents of the players can assist in supporting their child through ensuring they arrive on time and assisting with umpiring when needed. If you are unable to make it to your game please ensure you arrange a fill in player or alternatively please give Katya a call. Fees for this season will be due at the commencement of the season and can be paid at the club house on Friday afternoon, cash or cheque only. The draw for the season will be sent out to all players prior to the start of the first game. We wish all the players a great season. For any other enquiries please call Dawn Wendt 5494 1085.
Glasshouse Ponyclub
Contributed by Kelly Wall On Sunday, July 21 we had our Jessica Wall LIVE. LOVE.RIDE Gymkhana at the Glasshouse Pony Club grounds in Beerwah. Our 100 riders participated, all dressed up in their pink and purple and decorated their horses the same. The day was huge, lots of laughs, smiles, great food, donated items for our raffles and trophies. Congratulations to those who placed, but the day meant a lot more than winning to a lot of our riders who were there for ‘our Jess’. Would like to say a huge thank you to our volunteers, instructors, parents, riders and everyone that made the day extremely special, with over $300.00 (still more to be counted) is being donated to the Kidney Foundation. The wife shouts, “don't do it! I lied when I told you I inherited money, HE paid for the Porsche, our new cabin cruiser, our house at the lake, your African tour and 4x4, our country club membership, and he even pays the monthly dues!” Shaking his head from side to side, the husband lowers the gun. He looks over at the cabby and says, “what would you do?” The cabby replies, “I'd cover him with that blanket before he catches cold.” Margaret Sawers, Mooloolah Did you know you could win an admission pass to Aussie World just by sending in your jokes? A man returns home a day early from a business trip. It's after midnight. While en route home he asks the cabby if he would be a witness. The man suspects his wife is having an affair, and he wants to catch her in the act. For $100.00 the cabby agrees. Quietly arriving home, the husband and cabby tip toe into the bedroom. The husband switches on the lights, yanks the blankets back and there is his wife in bed with another man! The husband puts a gun to the naked man's head.
