n Friday night after work we headed down to the Big Night Out at Beerwah State School, and as you can tell by the photos in our Out and About on page 22 there was everything you would expect to see at a school fete and more. Not having children means that going along to these type of events isn’t something that I do very often, but I have to say it seemed to offer something for everyone. I reckon while we were there – just on twilight, the ladies on the ‘Glowies’ stall were very popular. All the kids wanted to have something attached to them that would blink on

And because it is at night, the event seemed to attract what I guess were former students to come along and hang out with their mates looking ‘cool’ which they seemed to like. Back in May, GCNews brought you a story on an application for a new mobile phone tower at Jefferys Road, Glass House Mountains. At the same time, Telstra had another project to make improvements to an existing facility at the Beerwah water reservoir between Tower Lane and Carnarvon Drive. The original application for the Tower Lane development saw Telstra wanting to erect a 30m tower and move the existing antennas onto this new pole. However, due to concerns that the 30m pole would be visible from the surrounding areas, Telstra agreed to reduce the height of tower to 20m to lessen the visual impact. Although the allowed height is 20m, Telstra’s application documents show that the total height of the pole and antennas will be 21.4m.

So, it’s been a couple of months now since the applications were finally approved and locals have been asking ‘how long do we have to wait now before we see some action on the ground?’ GCNews has asked Telstra, how long it would be before works commenced on the two sites? Also when would locals see the facilities functioning so they can finally receive mobile phone reception similar to that which our coastal cousins have come to expect as normal? However, at the time of going to print, Telstra had not responded to our enquiries. Possibly they couldn’t get through to our mobile phones, seeing that we have absolutely no functional coverage here at our Coonowrin Road office – just 200m from the town centre.

As previously reported in GCNews, the Mooloolah Valley Country Club ran itself into serious financial difficulties and on January 20, 2012 was ordered by the Supreme Court to be placed into liquidation with Morton’s Solvency Accountants being the appointed liquidators. A sale of the property and gaming machine entitlements by expression of interest in June this year failed to deliver a successful result, and so the liquidators are now taking the club to an onsite auction on November 8. A report issued by the liquidator establishes the total amount owed to creditors as $709,512, with $37,596 worth of assets able to be identified. The bulk of this figure is owed to the ANZ bank (approximately $400,000); with the remainder being superannuation owed to staff and liabilities to unsecured creditors – including more than 10 local Glasshouse Country businesses. Add to this the estimated liquidator costs of over $115,000 and the auction will have to realise almost $800,000 to clear all debts off the books. Morton’s have called a meeting of creditors to be held on November 2 at the Caloundra Power Boat Club, Golden Beach to discuss matters regarding the liquidation and the auction. On September 28, 2011 Brisbane accounting firm Williams Hall Chadwick (also known as Williams and Partners Pty Ltd) issued the Mooloolah Valley Country Club with a ‘creditors demand for payment of debt’ relating to a total of $41,110.51. They are also owed another debt for $6,788.51. The club had stopped trading in the same month, and prior to that was making a continued loss (a loss of $49,011.96 was found by the liquidators for the period July 1, 2011 to January 20, 2012. During this period, the committee would have known that they could not meet their outgoing commitments. In fact, on November 1, 2011 the committee sent creditors a letter asking them to hold off on proceeding with any debt reclamation activities.

As the club was unable to pay, Williams and Partners Pty Ltd applied to the Supreme Court to have the club wound up and liquidated – an application which was granted in January 2012. The court appointed liquidator – Gavin Morton from Morton’s Solvency Accountants – investigated the affairs of the club, and found that their liabilities far out stripped their assets. According to the liquidators report to the creditors, Mr Morton found grounds that the club had been trading insolvent under Section 286 of the Corporations Act 2001. However, Mr Morton notes that the Committee are not personally liable for the debts of the club (under provisions of the Associations Incorporations Act 1981). It was Mr Morton’s opinion this also appears to extend to any liability in relation to insolvent trading. However, Mr Morton stated that ‘my investigations into this area have been limited’. This statement is qualified further in another section of the document when Mr Morton reports he was advised that ‘the previous management of the Club had not kept the records of the Club in a proper manner and reconciliations of accounts had not been done on a regular basis’. A questionnaire Mr Morton put to the Committee members threw some light onto why the Club failed so dramatically. Mr Morton reports that a Mr Boustead advised him that the failure of the Club was due to “bad management, both deliberate and accidental, by committees and staff over several years.” A claim of employee theft was also made in the report, although no details were given. However, it can be assumed to be significant as it was a view of the Committee that the theft was a factor in the failure of the Club. No information was provided as to whether a Police report was made or if an investigation was undertaken. In another astounding discovery, Mr Morton found that the Committee at the time made no insurance claim for the theft, even though the Club maintained a policy which provided up to $500,000 coverage.

Similarly, Mr Morton found that the Committee failed to make an insurance claim for the damage to the Club resulting from a break-in through the roof in April 2011. Following an insurance claim by Mr Morton as the liquidator, he was able to do what the Committee had ignored – and claimed a total of $21,414.45 from the policy. In an attempt to realise a return for the creditors, Mr Morton had the property valued and appointed McGee’s Property to market the property and associated assets for sale by expression of interest. Three expressions were received, with a contract for sale being signed with one bidder on August 1, 2012. The price offered must have been considerable, as Mr Morton reports that the purchase price was enough to cover all the liquidation and selling costs, as well as paying all creditors 100 cents in the dollar.

But during the due diligence period, the purchaser identified issues revolving around the uncertainty of a hotel/tavern development being approved by Council at Mooloolah, and uncertainty regarding Council allowing a rezoning of the property. The purchaser asked for a 60 day extension of the due diligence; however Mr Morton decided to only offer them a 30 day extension. No explanation was tendered by Mr Morton as to the reasons for his decision. Consequently, the buyer pulled out of the contract on September 20, 2012. No information is given in the report as to whether Mr Morton attempted to negotiate with any of the other potential buyers. Which all leads to the expectant on-site auction set down for November 8, where creditors trust that this sorry state of affairs will finally come to an end.

Mooloolah performing our arts off

There is much anticipation as Mooloolah awaits the next Mooloolah Performing Our Arts Off night to be held at the public hall on Saturday, November 3. This light-hearted event will once again showcase a diverse range of local emerging and established performers, including musicians, dancers, actors and more. All ages are encouraged to participate. Young talent will be highlighted, with the first hour mainly dedicated to performances by school age and younger performers, followed by other groups and solo acts. Headline performances include ‘Sulco’ and ‘Miss Marie’. People are encouraged to get creative with their dress to be in the running for the best shoes and hat prize. Event coordinator, Natasha Odgers, said that following the great success of the first talent night, the event will continue to present local talent and build a sense of community. “The night gives an opportunity for people in the area to perform for one another and build people’s connection with the community,” she said. “We also want to uncover undiscovered local talent and give new artists confidence in taking the first step to put their creative talents out there.” Acts of all talents and ages can register beforehand or turn up on the night. Audience members can either book seats or just come along. Entry is by donation and everyone is in the running for the lucky door prize. There will be a cosy kid’s corner plus adult creativity in the audience with drawing and games. Throughout the year, the students have gained skills in subjects such as studio, lighting, camera prac, digital and design. The evening will kick off at 5.00pm and will showcase a collection of their best work. Their chosen charity to support on the evening is Smartpups. They specialise in training and placement of service dogs for children with development disabilities. Real Time Ultrasound want to see your muscles? Real time ultrasound (or RTUS) is a non invasive technology which allows imaging of the deep muscles that have a supportive function around joints. Most commonly we can utilise RTUS around muscles of the low back, abdomen, hip, pelvic floor, and shoulder. Weakness in these deep stabilisers is a common problem following pain and injury. To minimise recurrence assessment of this and strength retraining is important to minimise development of recurrent chronic dysfunction. It is high frequency sound waves that the ultrasound generates which is reconstructed to provide an image of these deeper tissues. This visual representation is extremely helpful for assisting in retraining the patient to ‘switch-on’ and activate the correct muscle as you can’t ‘trick the machine’. Beerwah Ladies Golf is very pleased to announce that Joan Harvey has become the second ‘Legend of Beerwah Golf’. Joan joined the club in 1970 and by 1971, had begun volunteering on the Committee. She first took on the role of Secretary, which she held for eight years, then became Vice Captain for two years. Joan then stepped up to be Captain for seven years from 1986. Joan also served time on the Management committee as House Director and Vice President. Whilst working for the club, Joan still had time to play some pretty mean golf. She won the C Grade Championship in 1976, 2004, 2005, and 2008. Joan also won the B Grade Championship in 1997 and 1998, and along with her great golfing buddy, Val Shaw, won the Ladies Foursomes in 1987. Joan also won the Mixed Foursomes in ’88, ’90 and ’93; and the Beerwah Cup in ’93. To top all that off, Joan has also scored the Holy Grail of golf, a Hole in One. Even after 40 years, Joan is still actively involved in helping our club. She works on the Seniors Committee and currently holds the position of President. Joan’s dedication was recognised in 2007 when she was awarded Life Membership by the club. Joan became great mates with our Club Professional, John Mellish, soon after his arrival and served as his Assistant for a time, something she will still do today if the need arises. The best illustration of Joan’s dedication to Beerwah Golf Club and its future can be seen

Over the 30 odd years Joan has been in this position, she has taught many Juniors not only the mechanics of the game, but the etiquette and honesty which go hand in hand with success in the game. We are indebted to Joan for her tireless efforts over the years to make our club the best it can be and hope she continues to be an active member for many years to come. Community News Local calendar now on sale The Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains has just released their 2013 calendars and even after nine years the quality of the images is still fabulous. These great images are the result of passionate local photographers who combine their photographic skills with their love of our local area to capture these moments in time. The images that are included in the calendar are the result of a competition and are chosen by internationally recognised photographer Colin Beard and Glasshouse Country News editor Lea Parkes. The front cover image is chosen as part of the people’s choice competition and this year’s winner was Rob Hill with his photo called ‘Mt Coonowrin Standing on Guard’.

Songs that changed the world By Michael Whiticker Our next session of the Glasshouse Mountains Musos Club on Thursday, October 25 at Beerwah RSL is a theme night – ‘Songs that changed the world!’ Come along and sing us songs that reflect this theme for you. Was Redgum’s ‘I was only 19’, or Dylan’s ‘The times they are a changing’ one of them? Or perhaps Paul Kelly’s ‘From little things big things grow’ or Helen Reddy’s ‘I am woman’? Performers and lovers of song are welcome to join us for this special night. The theme was inspired by a program with a title similar to this which appeared on Radio National recently.

It discussed the role that popular music played in the 60s, heralding the dramatic changes taking place in western society at the time. Songs mentioned include those of Dylan and the Kinks ‘Well respected man’, the Rolling Stones ‘Under my thumb’ and songs from The Who among others. I’m sure we could come up with our own list, and not just from the 60’s. Yours might even include songs that changed your world! As always ‘theme nights’ are treated very loosely and we welcome anyone to get up and do their own thing - and yes, I am sure that song you have just written might just change the world! In 1993 Peter Herbert started as Chaplain at Beerwah State High School on one and a half days per week mentoring and helping the school community. Over 10 years, financial support from the Glasshouse Country Community for Chaplain Justin Evans grew and grew until in 2006 there were enough funds for full time chaplaincy at the High School. Since 2007 Mike Turner has been the full time Chappy and now heads up a team of four Chaplains. Recently Chairman of the Local Chaplaincy Committee Mrs Glenda McSwain welcomed three new Chappies to care for Glasshouse Country Community. Lynda Whysall is the new Chaplain for Landsborough on a Wednesday and Thursday and at Beerwah State School on Monday and Tuesday. Lynda said she is most looking forward to networking with the schools and local community groups to bring support and encouragement to the children, families and staff in the community. Andy Taylor will be based at Glass House Mountains Primary School every day in Term 4 and at least two days a week next year. Andy said he loves when he puts a smile on the kid’s faces and makes their day brighter, and also when a teacher feels more accepted and valued.

John is a bush poet and his poems were hilarious, and in some instances, quite raunchy. This man really has a gift for taking the audience on a raucous ride through bush, farmlands and family life. Next month we are asked to remember Poverty Week which runs from November 14 to 20. The next View Club get together will be for the Melbourne Cup to be held in Club Glasshouse on Tuesday, November 6 from 9.30am. The cost is $25.00 which includes morning tea and a two-course lunch. Presentation to Cancer Council You Members from the Charity Sports Committee and the Beerwah Lions Club gathered last week to present a cheque for $23,500 – proceeds from the 41st Beerwah Charity Sports – to Cancer Council Queensland. Rescue on Mt Ngungun

Glasshouse Country SES Contributed by Dave Erbacher On Sunday, October 21, the Glasshouse Country SES Group was called at 8.30am to assist a 27-year-old female who had slipped whilst descending Mt Ngungun. Ambulance Control advised that the person had sustained a sprained ankle which may involve a possible break. They had a crew on the way, the AGL helicopter had been activated and the SES was requested to provide assistance. Sandra from Strathpine, was accompanied by her husband Luke up the mountain and slipped on loose dirt on the return trip.

60th Wedding Anniversary

Local couple, Alan and Elaine Jackson, of Bell Road, Glass House Mountains recently celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. The occasion was marked with a family luncheon at the Petrie home of their daughter, Mrs Jo-ann Shirley, and was attended by their three children and partners and eight grandchildren. Congratulatory messages were received from H.M. The Queen, The Governor General, Prime Minister, State Governor and local M.P.'s. The couple will further celebrate the event on a cruise to New Zealand on the Sea Princess later in the year.

An SES crew was assembled and on arrival at the scene, the Beerwah Ambulance crew (Grant, and trainee Bree) were on hand and the AGL helicopter had already lowered a paramedic to an adjacent area higher up the mountain. Rather than wait a short while for the SES stretcher, the patient was assisted with support either side to enable her to hop approximately 30 metres up the mountain to the usual evacuation point and subsequently winched up to the helicopter and conveyed to Nambour Hospital. SES Group Leader Robert Barry thanked the crew of Louise, Tarra, Dave, Brett, Roger and Tim for turning out in response to the call for assistance. Beerwah Camping

Drum, drum, drumming along By Sally Maxwell Music Teacher Recently the community of Beerwah was treated to a very special performance of African Drumming at the ‘Night of Arts’ at Beerwah State School’s Centenary Hall. The students of Beerwah have been studying West African drumming throughout term 3 which culminated in a performance at the arts evening. The students performed on African djembe drums and sang a traditional call and response song lead by Year 7 students. They performed with confidence and impact to the delight of the audience.

That is what brings a small town close and creates feelings of belonging to a bigger family than just your own. In this community there are a lot of businesses who help clubs and not-for-profit organisations. Mooloolah Pharmacy helps many of these organisations every year. If it wasn’t for this assistance we wouldn’t be able to provide our children with the quality of being able to access new technology and new equipment when they are in our care. Last year the generosity of Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy and Ruth allowed Mooloolah After School and Vacation Care to purchase a flat screen television, a DVD player and a Wii console for the children to use, by giving a grant of $1,000.00 to us. The children are ecstatic that they don’t have to sit around a tiny television to see a movie now, and they are all interactively dancing their lives away to ‘Just Dance’ on the Wii. Our Many Thanks go the Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy from all the children and staff.

Native Animals – road kill increases Locals are reporting to me an increased incidence of native animals being hit by vehicles in the hinterland area, particularly on Old Gympie Road. Skippy Park – stage two underway The fencing has gone up in preparation for stage two of the Skippy Park play area. Council staff and I reviewed the designs and I’m pleased to say that the design team has come up with some exciting improvements that include a site specific climbing pyramid and a flying fox. The construction period is around 18 weeks but we may be able to open up some completed sections before that. Stand by to see the large mound of dirt replaced by some exciting play elements we haven’t seen in Division 1 before.

A Fitness Matters franchise has opened in Mooloolah and I would like to welcome the new business to town. It’s a good indication of confidence in the local economy for small business and local business people. On Saturday, October 13 they held a really successful Open Day to celebrate their opening. Graffiti Action Day is on Sunday, October 28 for volunteers to help clean up our local region. Council has partnered with Keep Australia Beautiful in an initiative to combat vandalism. Businesses and community groups are encouraged to sign up to take part in coordinated cleanups to improve community spirit and raise awareness of good graffiti removal and prevention measures. After taking over the Lookout Cafe earlier this year, the lovely ladies Noelene, Rochelle, Elise and Chris have well and truly settled in and are busy coming up with new and exciting ways to impress us locals. Their menu includes breakfast, lunches, light snacks and sweet treats, so there is something suitable for whenever you call in. With the majority of the food being homemade it seems that lots of locals are enjoying the fare and are becoming regular customers. So to say thanks to us locals, the girls have introduced a ‘Loyalty Card’ which means every eighth drink is free. More recently they have expanded their light meals to include wedges and hot chips, which are served between 11.30am and 2.00pm, and are a

firm favourite with the kids. With summer now well and truly here, they are also going to be serving caesar salads, including chicken and smoked salmon versions, as part of their lunch menu. Elise said one thing that has been great for their business is group bookings, and over the last few months they have hosted many groups from across the Sunshine Coast and from Brisbane. While the cafe size could be described as cosy because the design is so open, they are able to seat up to 28 diners, which makes it a perfect venue for small birthdays, Christmas catch-ups or work parties. To ensure that everything runs smoothly for your function they would appreciate 48 hours notice for a booking.

The Lookout Cafe

As the weather is warming up they have decided to open one night a week and serve tapas, with the menu including items such as spicy satay chicken skewers, as well as prawn and chicken dumplings with an Asian dipping sauce. They will also look at offering tapas during the day for group bookings with a minimum of 10 diners. Environment New nursery at Landsborough Barung Landcare is opening their new production nursery at Landsborough, and the public are invited to come along and help celebrate on November 3. The native plant nursery on Forestry Road at Landsborough has been a long-awaited project for the environment group since their main office and nursery closed at Bicentenary Lane, Maleny. The Landsborough production nursery will compliment their existing retail outlet at Porters Lane, North Maleny but will increase their capacity to supply large numbers of native plants for wholesale customers. In the new nursery, hundreds of thousands of native plants will be grown and made available to landholders with revegetation projects, contractors, Councils, government agencies and for Barung’s own revegetation activities. To honour the occasion, Sunshine Coast Council Mayor, Cr Mark Jamieson will do the official ceremonial ribbon-cutting at 11.00am. Following this, the nursery will be open for inspection with the barbeque firing up at 12.00noon and a free sausage sizzle for those attending is also included. Directly following – for Barung Landcare members or those interested in joining the group – will be their Annual General Meeting at 1.00pm. The new Barung Landcare production nursery is located at 135 Forestry Road, Landsborough (the ‘old ostrich farm’ to the longer term locals). If you’d like to come along on the day to have a look around (or attend the AGM), Barung ask that you register your interest so that they know numbers for catering. Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network The koala: one of the animals that people all over the world immediately identify with Australia. The familiar friendly features of this iconic creature are synonymous with Australia. And yet there is a real danger that the koala could be a lost species before too long. Why is this happening? Well, we all know that koalas live in trees, and of course they like to live in trees which provide the food that they survive on, usually certain species of eucalypts or related plants. They each need to chomp through about 500 grams a day to survive. As their food trees are being lost through urban and infrastructure development or other habitat loss, the koalas are forced to move on the ground to find other sources of food. This makes them vulnerable to dog attacks and traffic, the two biggest killers of koalas today. Earlier this year, GMAN, with the kind permission of Les from the Sandy Creek Organic Farm, 2471 Old Gympie Road Beerwah, planted some koala food trees which, as they mature, will provide food for koalas in care after being attacked or injured. The trees planted are doing really well, but a bit of a clean-up of the area will help them survive even better. Some may need to be replaced with new plantings as well. You are invited to come along on Sunday, October 28 to the Sandy Creek Organic Farm to help out for an hour or two anytime after around 8.00am to 8.30am. Wear suitable footwear and a hat. Come in and have a look and see how we have incorporated local native plant species to soften hard edges and promote frog activity. The pond has only been up and going for two weeks and frogs have spawned in it; today I looked and we have tadpoles! Just for the record, no they are not cane toads. Happenings Out and About Big Night Out When the school bell rings on Friday most students can’t wait to get out the gate, well that definitely wasn’t the case last Friday at Beerwah State School when the Big Night Out was about to get underway. The school ground was converted into a ‘carnival atmosphere’ with plenty of rides, novelty stalls, junk food, face painting, music and entertainment with the highlight of the night being a spectacular fireworks.

Contributed by Jenny Kelly The weather was pretty hot as were the scores on Thursday. Barb McIntosh played a superb round to score a grand total of 46 Stableford points to take out 2nd Division. Barb has played some lovely golf lately, and it all came together for her on the day. It must have been the company, because runner up to Barb in 2nd Div, with another great score of 42 points, was Debs Rutherford. Barb and Deb played in the same group and really set the pace. There were some great scores in Division 1 as well, with Viki Bartel coming in with a total score of 40 Stableford points, just edging out Monica Dangerfield who

came in with 39 points. NTP's went to Sonia Kenway on 2 and 5, Sue Williamson on 16 and Lyn Lambert took out the 18th. We had a field of 59 players, but only one of us, clever Heather Henn, scored a birdie on our Birdie Hole, number 10. The Ball Rundown went to 36 points. Many thanks to our trophy donors on the day, Marie Norton and Carol Cork. The culmination of our Medal competitions will be played next Thursday with all Medal winners from throughout the year competing to be the Medal of Medalists. Saturday, October 20 - Finals of Club Championships were played in Men’s B Grade Singles and Mixed Pairs. In the Men’s B Grade Singles, Kerry Capern is the 2012 Club Champion. The runner up is Max Viterale. The final score was 25 to 19 in a high quality and close game. In the Mixed Pairs the 2012 Club Champions are Margaret Lehmann and Gary Lehmann. The runners up were Rob Scullion and Monika Duff. The final score was 15 to 14. The game lasted some four hours and was very close all the way through. The contest was enjoyed by members watching until the final bowl in the final end before a winner was known. Five men played a game of Scroungers during the afternoon. The winner was Stewart Wilson.

Calling all native plant lovers

Society for Growing Australian Plants, Qld is part of an Australia wide organisation which seeks to promote and cultivate our native flora which is so varied and versatile. The local branch meets on the second Sunday of every month, except January. We are a convivial group and meet either at member's homes or go for excursions in the marvellously diverse coastal and hinterland areas of the Sunshine Coast. Details are in the Glasshouse Country News gardening diary dates in the last edition of each month, or the Secretary is available on 5494 9187. Our September excursion was to Racemosa Environmental Reserve at Hardwood Road, Christine McMaster, David Hockings and Landsborough. Joan Horgan A range of native plants were flowering but the Leptospermum polygalifolium (Yellow Tea Tree) and Callistemon pachyphyllus (Wallum Bottlebrush - red form) took everyone's eye. The October meeting was held at Go Green Rainforest Nursery, Glenview where Simon shared his expertise and wealth of knowledge on a wide range of native plants suitable for local gardens. His enthusiasm for rainforest species, especially those from North Queensland is infectious. A tour of the nursery garden revealed many native plants in a horticultural setting. The Sunshine Coast Branch is excited to be the host location for the National Conference of the Australian Native Plant Societies of Australia which will be held at Alexandra Headland in August 2013. The Conference will have many interesting speakers dealing with aspects of our wonderful flora, as well as pre and post conference tours to various parts of Queensland. We will be able to showcase the Sunshine Coast as the delegates discover the special botanic features of our area during the day-trips to Cooloola, the Hinterland and the Maroochy Botanic Gardens.
