Hi Everyone

M

any of you will have noticed the television advertising for ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ and with March almost here, it is time once again for the Leukaemia Foundation’s massive annual fundraising event. If you have thought about losing your locks to help raise funds to support people with blood cancer and for research then you still have time! I think I even saw a story about the mayor, Mark Jamieson letting the community know that he would be being brave and going the shave. Well I am not sure how brave you need to be when you have hair as short as his to begin with – but hopefully he can raise some serious dollars for a good cause.

Calling the sports club home Visitors to the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club will be in no doubt as to what great sporting clubs call the grounds ‘home’ now that a fantastic new sign stands proudly at the entrance. The four affiliate clubs – The Glasshouse Rangers Cricket, Tibros Netball Club, Glasshouse Mountains Touch Association and Beerwah Glasshouse United Soccer Club (BeeGees) – banded together to have the new sign installed. Tony Bates from BeeGees said that all the clubs wanted to update the old sign and give the front of the sportsground a lift. “The sign – designed and made by local Beerwah business ATL Graphix – highlights the range of sports made possible by the Sports Club. Currently, along with the four affiliated clubs (which combined have an active player participation of almost 900 local men, women and children) the grounds also play host to a range of other sporting groups and activities, including the schools of the Sunshine Coast through interschool touch, netball and AFL championships, remote control aeroplane clubs, amateur fishing clubs (for their State/National casting championships) and various fitness bootcamps.

By Greg Brown

Over the years, most families across the Glasshouse Country region would have taken advantage of the great facilities the Sports Club grounds has to offer in one way or another and it is important that our community get behind the club to ensure that these facilities are available into the future. In last week’s story about the future of the sports club GCNews reported that Council would not be continuing to provide funding to the Sports Club. However Cr Rick Baberowski has clarified the situation with us, saying … “council's funding programs are under review, in the same way that all funding programs come under review every few years. That means that funding at the same level and with the same conditions is not guaranteed as reviews have to pass a vote in council,” he said. “I will wholeheartedly be supporting our sports clubs getting the resources they need to survive in these tougher times." The issue of extra emergency funding for the sports club is a separate issue, and while there is no pool of quick funds available, he is working with the club and council officers to find ways to support the club. “Sports clubs are part of the core fabric of who we are as a community, and I too encourage everyone to give them their support,” he said.

Electricity grid to be abandoned Compare quotes – rather than prices Last week we reported a CSIRO study suggesting that Australians were destined to abandon the grid supply and become self sufficient in personal energy requirements. Houses with solar panels would use the power produced by their rooftop solar systems to charge lithium iron batteries that can be charged and discharged each day, with a life span of about 20 plus years. But a local Beerwah inventor is already using those same solar panels to extract hydrogen from water to run a fuel cell to deliver electrical energy to operate the household for sunny or non-sunny periods (night time etc.) Investors from all states and overseas are vying for position to be amongst the original shareholders before the Company goes Public. Manufacturers are clambering to receive rights to manufacture, one wanting exclusive rights to distribute them in China with 1 million units per year as the starting number. We at 1300 4 SOLAR believe this technology will surpass the battery demand. Already 6 car manufacturers are releasing hydrogen fuel cell cars over the next 2 years. So hydrogen will be a much more common power source in the future with Beerwah starting a hydrogen highway infrastructure throughout Queensland.

Prices for solar systems can be unrealistically cheap and some of the large National TV advertisers are really cheap. See if they will actually TELL you what BRAND of panels they will ACTUALLY INSTALL on your roof AND what BRAND of inverter. A local Old Gympie Road customer had a large Gold Coast company supply and install his system a couple of years ago. They left him a brochure of a top brand of panel, but installed an unknown brand. But apart from that, he has said (19-02-14) that they were trouble from the time the Gold Coast installers arrived. They are still having trouble and the really pleasant (at the time of signing them up), sales lady, will NEVER phone them back, never. If you shop LOCALLY, then YOU are in control, because you can easily ruin the reputation of a LOCAL supplier.

The never never system If you are courteous enough to invite Ty or Ian to your house to assess it for a solar system, then their policy has ALWAYS been, NEVER, NEVER ask for an order. You have invited us for a discussion and that is what it is. When we leave, we would like you to think about what we have said and possibly study the info that we leave.

Sunshine Coast Council has contributed $60,000 to the Landsborough Tennis Club to help with the upgrade of their popular playing courts. Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said it's welcome news for the tennis club who’ve worked hard to seek the funding to make serious structural improvements on two of the courts. “Through their fundraising activities, the Landsborough Tennis Club has raised $60,000 towards the project and the State Government has also contributed $100,000,” Cr Baberowski said. “Two courts at the tennis club are effectively

not playable due to their poor condition and subsidence impact of an encroaching creek. “Council’s scope of work is to design and construct the sub-surface and to complete final concrete works and court levelling and surfacing. “This is a really impressive long standing club and their executive members make sure it’s a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere for all who go to play there.” Cr Baberowski said he gives full credit to the seriously dedicated committee members who make the club successful.

HMAS Voyager survivor 50 years on The 50th anniversary of the sinking of the HMAS Voyager (D04) has recently reminded Australians of one of our countries greatest naval tragedies. GCNews took the opportunity to catch up with Mooloolah local and Voyager survivor Bernard Verwayan. On February 10, 1964 the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne (R21) and the Voyager were engaged performing exercises off Jervis Bay, when the ships collided just before 9.00pm. The Melbourne’s bow hit the Voyager just aft of the bridge and cut the destroyer in two, within 10 minutes the bow section had rolled and sunk. The rest of the boat sunk three hours later. Of the 314 crew aboard the Voyager, 82 were killed, most of them trapped in the bow section. The ordeal that followed for the survivors that night can only be imagined. It was an ordeal that didn’t end after the rescue. Bernard then 23 years old, was asleep off watch in his bunk in the bow of the Voyager when the collision occurred. Jolted into action, he was one of 38 men who managed to get through an escape hatch and scramble to ‘safety’ in the sea. The water was covered in thick oil and he became entangled in the wire railings that cut into his backside deeply, a wound that would later require 26 stitches. These men spent three hours in the water. Those three hours must have seemed like an eternity, full of images that will never be forgotten, awful

memories that coloured their lives in so many painful ways. Two hundred and thirty two survivors were eventually returned to Jervis Bay that night, but it is here, that the story becomes even more confronting. These men were patched up, cleaned up and given a second class rail ticket and one week’s leave to ‘recover’ before reporting back to duty. There was no counselling or assistance of any kind. Bernard recalls the Navy of the 1960’s being a pretty tough mob, led by men who were hardened veterans of WW2. “If you couldn’t return to duty after that week, you were offered a free discharge and many of those men took that option, giving away any rights to compensation,” he said. Within one month our Bernard was on a supply ship involved in the Vietnam conflict, and within

By Anne Snell

seven months he was back on a sister ship of the Voyager, the HMAS Duchess, bunking down in the bow section once again. What followed was a naval inquiry, followed by an unprecedented two Royal Commissions and a battle for compensation that is ongoing and complex. Bernard had a long career in the navy, and now is a Pension Officer Advocate with the Beerwah RSL. He has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to veterans and their families. His passion is tangible and his empathy for veterans is heartfelt. With the ANZAC centenary celebrations commencing this year, the spotlight is on our armed forces. We love to see the ANZACs as a defining part of the Australian ethos. Let’s hope, 50 years on, we have learned to care as much for the wellbeing of our living servicemen and women as we do for the memory of those who we have lost.

They have happily run the turf farm for nine years now, but another plan was about to hatch. Amanda has published her first digital magazine for IPad. It is called Flossie, and there is a story behind the choice of that name. Her brother David, who was killed tragically in an aircraft crash in 2009, always called her Flossie, so it became a tribute to him. Flossie is still in its infancy but is already a beautifully presented and stylish publication set to develop in very interesting ways. Amanda is brimming with ideas for the new magazine and we discussed her plans to liaise with local farmers to help bring their produce to our tables. “If people only knew what great seasonal produce we have on our doorstep, they would surely buy it,” she says. “It is true that we all get a bit lazy about shopping and go for the 'one stop option' at times but local produce in season is a great bargain and a fabulously healthy option. Think global shop local, the planet will thank you…” So jump on the blog and have a look, or go to iTunes and download Flossie - the first two editions are free - and enjoy the ride.

FEBRUARY MADNESS!!!

Flossie author, Amanda Smyth

Email: info@renovationperfection.com.au Website: www.renovationperfection.com.au

Amanda Smyth is a young mother who has been writing an online blog for a couple of years now and has developed quite a following. GCNews readers may recall reading about her blog found at www.cookerandlooker.com This fun site is filled with recipe ideas and snippets of her personal life as a mum and dedicated foodie. Her sense of humour and the pleasure she gets from the little day to day things is infectious. Amanda’s husband had quipped that when a man marries he can get either a cooker or a looker, hence the name of the blog. It’s pretty clear that he was lucky and not only got both, but a whole lot more as well. This young woman is full of surprises. When she was growing up, Amanda’s mum told her to study hard because without a good education you could end up mowing lawns for a living. So she took that advice and got herself a degree in zoology. After working in this field for some years, she and her husband bought a farm, Glasshouse-Wild Horse Turf. Of course one of the main requirements of this crop is regular mowing - lots and lots of mowing. Amanda is very good at seeing the funny side of this.

Business Buzz with Sonia Clark Recently Michelle and Murray of Glasshouse Country Butchers were thrilled when one of their regular customers, Charlotte won a baby Weber barbecue as part of a nationwide ‘throw another steak on the BBQ’ competition.

Local business owner Dave Webb from Dave Webb Engineering in Glass House Mountains has provided an exciting opportunity for a young student named Hayden Valpreda from Beerwah State High School. Hayden’s School Based Apprenticeship is a lead into his fulltime apprenticeship where he will gain a Certificate 111 in Engineering Mechanical Trade. A school-based apprenticeship will allow Hayden to work during the week and train towards a qualification while completing high school. Dave provides experience, support and mentoring to Hayden whilst he completes his apprenticeship.

HEEL PAIN? Get treated. Get walking again.

The competition was an initiative of Meat and Livestock Australia who wanted to reinforce to Aussies that it is beef that should go on the barbecue and not shrimp (the phrase that Paul Hogan made famous way back in the 1980s). And while March marks the beginning of autumn – our weather means that barbecues are still in season, so if you are thinking barbecues you should pop in and see Murray, Michelle and their daughter Kerry. While Glasshouse Country Butchers is small, they offer a large range of products that are pleasantly affordable. They have just introduced Lilydale Free Range Chicken ensuring all their pork and chicken are now free range, while lamb and beef are all grass fed.

Community News The Phonoman is on his way Jean-Claude Boulenaz is sometimes known as the ‘phonoman’ or the ‘gramophone man’, as his fascination with early talking machines has become a life-long passion. An avid phonograph collector and historian, Jean-Claude says that the invention of the talking machine began the revolution of sound, leading to today's iPod. Peachester History Committee members will welcome Jean-Claude as guest speaker on Sunday, March 2 at Peachester Hall. He will have some of his remarkable collection on display, and will give a presentation and working demonstration tracing the history of the phonograph from 1857 to 1929. PHC meetings start at 11.00am and include a shared lunch. Anyone interested in the history of sound recording is welcome to join us on Sunday, March 2. Enquiries to Jan 5494 2301, or Helen 5494 9557. Contributed by Bob Banner Wednesday, February 12 saw President Rita Sanderson preside over a well-attended Beerwah Lions first dinner meeting of the year. The club was pleased to welcome two new members to its fold. Adrienne Heppel, a local young lady well known for her community efforts, was inducted into the Beerwah Club and the world of Lions service, by President Rita. The Lions were also pleased to welcome Linda Moore, an experienced Lion who is transferring to the Beerwah Club, from Chittaway Bay in New South Wales. The next major item on the club calendar is the youth of the year judging, due to take place on February 26 at the Glasshouse Sports Club.

National Red Balloon Day The Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) is pleased to support the first National Red Balloon Day (Friday, February 28), a new national day of thanks for all fire fighters and fire services across Australia. The idea is simple: all Queenslanders are being encouraged to fly a Red Balloon from their letterbox, fence, business window or a ribbon from their car on Friday, February 28, to let all fire fighters know just how much we appreciate their dedication, hard work and tireless efforts to protect life and property throughout the year. Please fly a red balloon on February 28 at your home or at work, to show your support for the work, including volunteer work, of all fire fighters this National Red Balloon Day.

Glasshouse RSL

Last Wednesday the Glasshouse Country RSL held their AGM, and with a number of new members joining the committee they are looking forward to a positive year ahead. New President Mick Griffin said as always the club’s main priority will be looking after the welfare of the sub branch members. “We are also pleased to be able to appoint a new Welfare Officer, Richard Thomson, who will be undertaking training in the role and is really keen to take up the position,” Mick said. With almost a completely new membership of the committee, there will no doubt be plenty of fresh thoughts and new ideas that they will be perusing in the coming months. Treasurer Karen Griffin said for the past few weeks the club had been open on a Friday night

The new hours will be Fridays - meals and bar from 4.00pm, Saturday - lunch and bar 11.00am – 1.00pm and Sunday - brunch from 9.30am - 11.30am. Cost for the smorgasbord is only $12.00 per head, and desserts will be sold separately, the bar will be open from 5.00pm and food will be served from 6.00pm. The ensuing explosion of heat, fire whirlwinds and flames up to 50m high from this material, threw burning embers in every direction. Dozens of spot fires started in the swamp paddock to be burned a few hours later in the evening. The Beerwah crew extinguished any spot fires that might have posed a threat and allowed the rest to burn safely into the swamp. This posed no threat as this was to be burned later in the afternoon anyway. Because one of our fire fighters felt unwell and left the burn off accompanied by another firefighter, First Officer Lou Spann contacted Glass House RFB and asked for an appliance to replace these crewmen. He then asked Landsborough to be on standby as a precaution if Glass House could not assist. Landsborough would come to assist if necessary. For the remainder of the burn off, all crews that were present were involved in ‘Watch and Act’ roles – watching the swamp burn itself out harmlessly within pre-burn off containment lines. Although they had nothing to do, it was a good feeling to know that so much help is available and generously given from other brigades if it is needed. A huge thank you to all the brigades that assisted. The burn off was handed back to the owners that evening, with all the goals achieved and a huge amount of fuel and wildfire potential removed. Patrols by the owner and Beerwah RFB continued for the next two days. Members of the public wishing to join the Rural Fire Service volunteers can contact Caloundra Rural Operations Area Office on 5420 7517 and enquire about their local brigade.

Contributed by Ash Langford You may have been wondering about the dense smoke that lingered about the hinterland for a few days beginning on February 2. Beerwah RFB was participating in a permitted hazard reduction burn out at Bell’s Creek. The brigade has done this same burn off many times previously. Its primary goal is to remove fire dangers to adjoining properties and the National Parks holdings. At about 300 acres, this burn off was to be done in two linked parts, first; the controlled burn off of a large paddock of about 60 acres from a central road and later allowing that to burn into the second part; to self-extinguish inside the recently burned swamp area completely surrounded by extensive preparations. These included a 300m buffer of previously burned out swamp and paddocks from a wildfire three months ago and excellent slashed and dozed fire breaks and grazed paddocks. The burn off was expected to throw up a lot of smoke for days after, due to its mixed vegetation of grass, scrub and swamp peat. It certainly did that. After contacting the Permit Issuer and Firecom, checking local weather conditions and completing a recce, the Permit Burn was started. It proceeded slowly as planned for about an hour (150m) until its creeping edge contacted a number of illegally dumped 44 gallon fuel drums hidden in tall Paspallum grass some 20m from the central road edge (the drums have now been removed and disposed of correctly).

Something Old? Something New? All designed to convert the old you to the new you - the person you wish to be. This week we caught up with The Healthy Guru resident Naturopath Judy Timm. With over 19 years experience as a Naturopath, Judy still enjoys the benefits she sees when her clients follow the guidance Naturopathy gives them. Not one to be complacent when it comes to her clients’ wellbeing, Judy has embraced a new healing modality known as Cranio-Sacral Therapy.

Business feature extreme use of drugs such as morphine. Now having experienced Cranio Sacral Therapy he has reported benefits such as being pain free for a month, fluid retention has diminished, his skin colour returning back to normal and he enjoys better sleep. What Bob is most enthusiastic about, is that at a time in his life when things were becoming clouded with uncertainty, Cranio-Sacral Therapy had helped him put his life back into perspective. He feels more himself again with his old vitality returning. Bob was ready to change and leave the emotional and physical pains in the past where they belong. Judy consults at The Healthy Guru, Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and is available by appointment on other days. She offers health fund rebates for those that choose to take advantage.

Completing a three year course in the gentle hands-on technique, Judy has discovered that pain can be trapped as a pattern in our body. The patterning is made of body tissue and cerebral spinal fluids. The body tissue holds cellular memory, linked to our history and the great benefit of Cranio Sacral Therapy is its unique technique of simply using gentle persuasive movements to release this patterning which in turn allows clients to experience a transformation in the mind and body of the areas that had been causing them pain and dis-ease. Bob (pictured with Judy) presented with severe back pain, fluid retention in his feet, skin discolouration and a lack of vitality. Having served his country in the armed forces as a parachutist, Bob had experienced his fair share of painful experiences with bad landings and the additional pain, suffering and trauma he witnessed when working as a medic. Bob’s previous pain at the time required the

Monthly Finance Money Guide

Business Feature

Business is Survival of the Fittest! – These things could make your business suffer 1. No vision for the Future We all want to earn a living on a weekly basis. But the most successful, also want the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. To get the end result, is to have the best planning sessions mapped out to help you achieve your goals. 2. No Process for Performance Improvement Do we measure everything? Probably not – but we should. Measure it, understand it and get it done. This can only add value to your business. Do you measure, productivity / profitability / cash? These three things will lead to better financial strength for your business. 3. Hoping for Profit instead of Planning for it Profit is not an option. Set yourself a profit goal. Then work backwards to figure out how much turnover you need to hit your profit target. 4. No Documented Goals Write down all goals and review this regularly. These goals may change over a period of time. So your focus may need to change within your business to ensure success. 5. Turnover is a Guess This is not good enough. You must drive turnover and be proactive. Have a marketing plan, no matter how large or small. You can’t just sit there hoping for a customer to walk in your doors. 6. No Long-Term Financial Plan You need to have a very clear idea of what your long-term financial plan is, to help it come to

Michelle Christopher-Blokland and Leisa Thistlethwaite of Hinterland Accounting Services

fruition. If you have a business with huge growth, you don’t want the cash to be sucked up by the business and have nothing left for you, or a business that is doing it tough, with no means of getting any funding to ensure you can keep your doors open. 7. Misusing the Overdraft Most businesses have a season, or busy period. Do you have the correct overdraft facility / finance to get through the tough times, or period of growth or to enable a change in premises, more staff, etc? Do not push the overdraft to the limit. Fund equipment or vehicle purchases separately not through the overdraft, as if you do this the cash flow won’t be there when you really need it.

8. Lack of Follow Through or action We have talked about the importance of goals and plans. But all the goals, all the plans are worth nothing if you don’t implement the plan and don’t take any action. You want to create a successful business for yourself and family now, but also into the future. For most businesses, staff and assets are the critical resources. Make sure you use these efficiently. Could they be improved, by say training, to make sure you get an increased productivity? Some key drivers for the business might be chargeable hours, stock turnover or opening hours. To see how we can help you, please call in and see us @ Hinterland Accounting Services, 12/60 Simpson Street, Beerwah or give us a call on 5439 0188.

Securing a home loan: Tips for saving up a deposit? If you’re a first home buyer, it can be understandably difficult to enter into the real estate market. After all, taking out a home loan and purchasing property is one of the biggest financial undertakings most people will ever experience. There are a lot of things to consider before pulling the trigger and committing to a certain home. But one of the hardest parts of purchasing a home is actually saving up enough money to be taken seriously by your lenders. The financial obligation of a 12

FEBRUARY 26 2014

mortgage will be with you for an extended period of time and isn’t something to be taken lightly. And financial lenders know this. Before they commit large sums of money to any one individual, they have to be sure you’re a reliable person - someone who will be able to make repayments in full and on time, without fail. For example, one thing they will look at is your deposit. As a general rule of thumb, deposits are usually between 15 and 20 per cent of a property’s overall value.

The more you can save, the less the lender has to commit to you, which increases your chances of securing a great home loan deal for you and your family. Adopting a great saving strategy will help you to get on the right track. Not only will it aid the growth of your savings, but it can be used as evidence of your sound financial situation when seeking a home loan from your lender, helping to boost your chances of successfully securing a great home loan.

Things like getting rid of digital television packages or no longer buying coffee every day may seem like small sacrifices, but they build up over a long time. Teresa Harrison Phone 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098

Kids & Parenting Parsley Partnership Continues

The children of Landsborough Community Kindergarten have again partnered with Bob from Cribb Street Butchers to supply him with fresh parsley grown in their herb garden at the kindergarten to be used in his meat display. We extend our thanks to Bob for his continued support of our kindy.” Each fortnight one of the children, together with their parent, drop off harvest of freshly cut parsley to Bob’s. “The children gain a clearer understanding of community spirit supporting a local business, they are excited to tend to their kindy gardens and to have the opportunity to deliver a harvest of parsley to Bob,” Ali said.

Being a good wingman

By Mike Turner (Bass player for the Superdads) Hi guys, hope you had some time off over the Christmas / New Year period – time to stop work for a bit and have some fun with our friends and family. I must say I loved getting away and doing lots of swimming with my kids and reading books for time out. I want to get us thinking about our ‘better halves’… our wives / partners. Are we being good ‘wingmen’ for them? I believe that in most homes, mums tend to be the ones who know what’s going on with the kids’ school stuff, play-dates, uniforms, homework, discipline etc. We dads can sometimes be oblivious to all this activity. There are definitely exceptions – I know quite a few dads who are all over this stuff. But, my point is, that more often than not, the mums are managing heaps of things including going to work as well. So… my challenge for all of us blokes (me included) is to listen to what is going on around us in the home and try and get involved. It may just be asking our wives / partners if there is anything we can do to help with ______. Or, maybe it is taking the initiative to say ‘I’ll take the kids to that play date/school event’, or ‘you have the evening off and I’ll make dinner’. The benefits of this sort of simple stuff is 1) Our wives / partners are happier, which helps us  2) Our kids see that mum and dad are working together and this gives them a greater sense of security 3) It gives our kids more time with us! Fathering is a tough but rewarding job. Keep up the good work!

The Superdads – we are a bunch of guys who love playing music and have formed a band. Their name came from something their guitarist Pete said once… “I don’t just want to be an average dad, I want to be an exceptional dad” – the idea resonated with them. www.superdads.com.au

Child Dental Benefits Scheme

Great news for families with children as the Government has commenced The Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) from January 1 this year. The scheme provides access to benefits for around 3.4 million children aged from two to 17 years. Dawn from Mooloolah Dental says that the scheme will be wonderful for people with children as it allows them access to benefits that will permit dental problems to be addressed. The scheme will provide those who are eligible, access to a range of dental services, where previously only basic examinations were subsidised. Now individual benefits are available for services such as x-rays, cleaning, fissure sealing, fillings, root canals and extractions. Benefits are available for many services, however some exclusions do apply. The total benefit entitlement is up to $1,000 per child over a two year period. The scheme is means tested requiring receipt of Family Tax Benefit Part A (FTB-A) or a relevant Australian Government payment, and families eligible for the CDBS should have received a letter of notification from the government. Mooloolah Dental offers bulk billing for most services and if you would like more information or to make an appointment, please contact the friendly staff on 5494 7011.

I give a moo for mooloolah Mooloolah Valley Mitre 10 Daryl and the team are pleased to advise that after 20 years of trading as Thrifty Link, Mooloolah Valley Hardware will now take on the new name, Mooloolah Valley Mitre 10. To celebrate the change, Brad and Dale from the hit Channel 9 series ‘The Block’ will make a very special in-store appearance on Tuesday, March 18 from 3.00pm – 5.00pm. Why not come down and meet the stars of the show and say hi to the team at Mooloolah Valley Mitre 10? They will also be having a grand opening on Saturday, March 29 with a swag of activities and specials on offer. The upcoming opening day will include a host of family friendly activities. Running from 10.00am until 2.00pm, the day will feature a jumping castle, sausage sizzle, balloons, giveaways and grand opening specials. Asked about the name change, Daryl said it was time to step up and move to a stronger brand. Mitre 10 is a well-known and respected brand in hardware, and we wanted to offer our customers more variety and a bigger range at keener prices, he said. The Mooloolah store will still have the same friendly staff members offering the same good old fashioned local service. Some of the changes have involved the store getting a brand new paint job, stock has been shifted and new product ranges have been added. Computer systems have also been upgraded and installed.

School News Students reach new heights

Challenging and enduring amid sweltering summer heat, Year 8 students at Pacific Lutheran College tackled new heights physically and mentally at their recent school camp, held at Somerset Dam. New friendships were formed and old ones strengthened during three fun-filled days of group-based activities including bridge building, canoeing, mountain bike riding, archery and high and low rope courses. With PLC experiencing a large influx of new Year 8 students to the college each year, the camp presented the perfect opportunity for students to get to know one another and form valuable connections. “The camp’s activities had a large focus on interaction between students and having fun,” coordinator Peter McMahon said. “PLC’s outdoor education programs are like classrooms without walls – students learn by doing and by the mistakes they make,” he said.

Primary pancake breakfast a yummy hit

Last Tuesday, Glasshouse Country Christian College held its second annual Primary Pancake Breakfast to the delight of dozens of primary students who attended. Chappy Danielle Bassett launched the event last year and it was such a big hit that it has now become an annual event. “I just wanted to bless the children and do something nice for them,” said Chappy Dani. Head of Primary, Mrs Cheryl Bryers, staff, parents and student leaders all helped the breakfast come together and managed to feed the hungry hordes who turned up. The steaming hot morning didn’t deter the primary students from lining up for one, two or even three delicious pancakes. Massive stacks of pancakes, maple syrup and ice cream was the recipe for a very successful morning.

Sun shines on swimming carnival

Contributed by Steve Jeffery Beerwah State High School held its annual school swimming carnival on Friday, February 14. The sun was shining on carnival day for the first time in five years and attendance was at an all-time high. House spirit was in abundance at the carnival following on from our ‘Cheer Cup’ event which was won by Tibberoowuccum. There was fierce competition between the houses with the lead changing every few hours. The lunch-time entertainment was a highlight for many, with the annual belly flop competition; staff, parents and students surrounded the pool to catch a glimpse of the belly battering. There were a number of very committed junior and senior students with the pool leaving its mark as evidence that they had competed. The overall winners of the 2014 swimming carnival were Tunbubudla who snatched victory in the last few events. Students are very much looking forward to the next event on the sporting calendar the ‘Beerwah Triathlon’, which will be held on April 3.

It is nice to know how much of your wedding planning can be done right here in Glasshouse Country, without making those crazy dashes to the coast on a weekend. For those organising weddings it can be a stressful time and what is really important is getting the right advice from people that you know and trust. That is what makes the concept of checking out our local businesses first so important – these businesses are owned by locals, many of them for long periods of time. Our local wedding specialists are experienced and knowledgeable; they take pride in their reputations and want to ensure that everything goes well for you on your special day. So if you are planning your wedding, check out the businesses that have advertised here – and let the local experts take all the stress out of the experience, so you can simply relax and enjoy your wedding day! Regards,

Sweet delight

Want something a little different for your wedding cake? Got a sweet tooth and want to really impress your guests? How about a three tier rocky road wedding cake? Made out of a whopping 21.5 kg of chocolate and packed with sweeties, this is the wedding cake that people will talk about for years to come. We asked Lynne from the Ole Lollie Shop at Palmview how this incredible creation came about. “I just had a vision for a three tier cake made of rocky road plus we also wanted something extra special for the shop window,” she says. “So we bought the tins, and everything to hold the tiers up and started with a milk chocolate base followed by a dark chocolate middle and the a milk chocolate top. The base alone was 10.5 kg!” Made entirely in store by assistant Brie, who took Lynne’s vision and ran with it - the creation took over five hours to make and proved to be a major drawcard on the day attracting a huge crowd of interested spectators who watched as the cake was created. Using only Cadbury chocolate (which they buy in 30kg bags), other ingredients included milk bottle lollies, gummy bears, rainbow jelly and coconut. The cake can be viewed online or in store and

Your Wedding Flower Specialist

while the completed cake will cost $399.00, choc lovers can currently buy it by the slice. Lynne is happy to take orders, just allow at least two week’s notice to prepare. Another interesting trend that is rising in popularity is lolly buffets at weddings. Lynne explains that this is where usually glass containers are filled with either the bride and groom’s favourite lollies or lollies that correspond to a particular colour theme. Bought by the kilo, the colour themed buffets have proven to be very popular with lilac, pink and even black lollies trending lately. For more details or to view the rocky road cake, pop into the Ole Lollie Shop at the Ettamogah pub complex or like their Facebook page. The shop is open weekdays 9.00am until 4.30pm and weekends 9.00am until 5.00pm. Phone 5494 5917.

Expect the revenue raiser

Have we all noted that in Landsborough, Gympie Street North is 40kph, between 7.00am – 4.00pm on school days, but Cribb Street and Myla Road remain at 7.00am – 9.00am and 2.00pm – 4.00pm? Expect the revenue raisers on Gympie Street North any day now! K. Pullen Landsborough

Thank you Beerwah Subway

On Wednesday, January 22 at about 12.15pm, three crews from the Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Brigade responded to a fire at Mt Tibrogargan. When we arrived, it was obvious we were going to be there for a long time. One of our Fire Fighters who was on her way out to help us, called into the Beerwah Subway to get us some ‘tucker’. She was surprised, after ordering and telling the staff what it was for, that Ken Banister (the owner) jumped up and said that he would donate the platter of ‘subs’ and all the cold bottled water in the fridge to the fire fighters on the scene. His generosity and community spirit (and food) was most welcomed by some very hungry and tired fire fighters. Thanks Ken and Subway. Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Brigade

A big thank you

My wife and I were leaving Beerwah Woolies on Wednesday and unknowingly I dropped my wallet as I reached for the car keys. It wasn't long before my wife received a call from the staff (work mates) at Woolworths asking if I had misplaced anything? At this stage I was still unaware of what had happened! I ran down straight away to pick up my wallet, and everything was in it. I asked the staff who had handed it in and was told it was picked up from the car park by an unknown lady and handed in to Les at the newsagent, who then passed onto Woolies staff knowing my wife worked there. I would like to thank this unknown lady for being so kind and honest. There are not many people so willing to help others without expectations. Aaron Hall Beerwah

Debates on climate change

We all know the story of the Titanic. People were warned of icebergs in the Atlantic Ocean, but there must have been some debate on board about how big the icebergs were, whether there had been more icebergs in the past, and some were even saying that there were no icebergs. As we all know, the pride in breaking the record for a Trans Atlantic crossing prevailed, with tragic results. You can debate the details around climate change until the cows come home. The broad conclusions on carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and climate change are agreed to by 97% of scientists, people who have spent a great deal of effort studying this issue. It is very easy to take action to avoid the threat of further climate change. It was demonstrated in the United States in the oil crisis of the 1980s that it was easy to reduce the emission of carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide. Targets were exceeded and business costs were reduced. It is the same every time the general public is asked to conserve water when there is a water shortage in the reservoirs. Targets have been usually succeeded. In my opinion, the debate should not be on the details of atmospheric carbon dioxide or the expected effect on climate. This question is pretty well settled to those who study the evidence properly. The real question is how can we go about reducing carbon dioxide emissions? It is very easy to reduce waste of fuel, and there are proven cost effective means of replacing many of the out-dated technologies which use coal and oil. It seems the main barriers are political. When will we start? There is nothing to lose by taking appropriate action. The risks of not doing enough are far too great. Des Buchhorn Mooloolah Valley

Re: Telstra story from February 19, GCNews

I can only assume that Mr Carver spent hours driving around or near Bruce Parade to gauge the claimed mobile reception ‘improvement’. I’d be interested to know the reception improvement in Springburn Avenue. Now according to Mr Carver all I need to do is invest in a Blue Tick Handset coupled with an external antenna or a car kit using a Telstra mobile smart antenna. Is this suggestion for real! I already have the required equipment to make and receive mobile calls...it’s called a mobile phone. And with Telstra heading towards the end of landline phones (be assured this is their aim, far less employees, vastly decreased maintenance costs etc) what do we all do then when your mobile network doesn’t work? Go back to buying SPC products so we can all get two shiny tins to string together! And as for the sometime internet...well there is still some serious work to be done there. Clean Up Australia Day Clean Up Australia Day is on Sunday, March 2 and the Beerburrum Innovation Group (BIG) is getting stuck into clean-up activities. Council helps groups like BIG with free waste disposal and we arrange waste and recyclable collection for all registered sites. So get involved in the BIG clean-up or register a site you'd like to work on via the Clean Up Australia Day website.

Sunday Drive to Caloundra Gallery The works in the Sunday Drive exhibition at the gallery celebrate the local artists and landmarks that characterise the beauty of our region. The gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday 10.00am to 4.00pm and the exhibition is on until March 23.

Your Environment Levy Council has purchased two more environment levy funded properties that are now protected for future generations. The two properties in Cambroon and Ilkley add 87 hectares to the region's conservation corridor network and demonstrate how vital the Environment Levy is in preserving the Coast's native plants and animals. Work is now underway on preparing tailored management plans for both properties to ensure the best possible environmental outcomes for the rare and threatened species, endangered rainforests, waterways and vegetation on the properties.

Pest survey Council officers are out and about conducting declared pest surveys in Glasshouse Mountains to monitor the distribution and spread of pest plants and animals and raise community awareness about them. They'll also promote best practice in their treatment while also monitoring compliance with the Land Protection (Pest and Stock Route Management) Act 2002. I'm amazed at the rapid spread of many new weeds in the area and was recently inspecting an eradication test site in Beerwah for the Taro plant, which quickly spread from a garden into a nearby farmland waterway - Taro is a new one to keep an eye on if it's growing in your garden and anywhere near a waterway.

Jenny McKay

Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 Mooloolah Valley park improvements

I recently met with community members at Rivers Edge Park to discuss some possible enhancements to this popular park such as a new playground, tables and chairs and drainage works. These requests are now being investigated for feasibility and funding consideration. Council is also working to improve safety and connectivity for residents by creating a walking path along the northern side of Brandenburg Road from Fern Gully Place to Viewland Drive, next to Rivers Edge Park. Meanwhile over at Martin Rungert Park, residents will be pleased to hear a fresh new timber park sign has been installed including a bracing rail for added structural strength. And further good news for lovers of our beautiful green open spaces. We have installed extra seating at Mooloolah Recreation Reserve for people to come, sit and relax while enjoying the ambience of this lovely, tranquil area. These are actually old seats that have been donated for use until funding is available for planned upgrades to this section of the reserve.

Rates update

I have received a number of enquiries recently from community groups and residents concerning the Emergency Fire and Rescue Levy charge included on the second rate run of the 2013 / 14 financial year. Please note council has no control over this charge – it is a State Government imposed charge that has been increased and extended to cover all properties throughout Queensland. Please contact your state member for further details. FEBRUARY 26 2014 |

Dine In

Daisy's Place

Wow, what better way is there to start the day than having a relaxing breakfast and a couple of strong milky coffees? Well I guess if you are one of those people who enjoy exercise then you might say – having a lovely breakfast and an invigorating bush walk? Well, the good news is that Daisy’s Place can accommodate your kind as well. Positioned in the lush rainforest edge of the Jowarra National Park is the gorgeous Daisy’s Place (formerly known as the Rustic Cabin). While these days the building is contemporary in style and dramatic in appearance, it is steeped in history. As you open the door you feel like you are making ‘an entrance’ into another world. For me who is a lover of bling, among all things

shiny and sparkly, I feel right at home straight away. However I notice once we are shown to our seats and are sitting staring out at the lush rainforest gardens that Brownie seems to relax and enjoy the outlook of natural beauty. As we look at our menus I see that they are serving ‘savoury mince’ which I love and Brownie went for the bacon and eggs, both the meals were lovely. The serving sizes were perfect and the presentation was great. While we were there we also had a look at the current lunch and dinner menu which offers sophisticated dining – you can check these out on-line at their website. Business owner Sue Joseph describes the

restaurant style as a unique dining experience with an eclectic mix of New York glamour and urban sophistication. Never having travelled to New York and having lived a semi rural life for the last decade or so – I can’t actually confirm if that is an apt description. However what I can say is the place is gorgeous and the food tastes great, the staff are friendly and attentive and the whole atmosphere is relaxing and comfortable. So if you haven’t dropped by and tried it for yourself, put it on your to do list for 2014 and sit back and enjoy the experience.

Native Orchids

Contributed by Jan Kesby

Throughout the Australian bush grow many different types of orchids. They live in a diversity of different environments in the ground or as epiphytes on the sides of trees, and sometimes on rocks. One small section of the upper Mooloolah River boosts 17 different species of orchids which is an impressive number. Once you create a love of orchids it will be with you for life. As an epiphyte, orchids feed off the bark and moisture from the tree it lives on, without doing any damage to the tree. Some have tiny flowers and others large impressive flowers. The photo here is an epiphytic orchid, Plectorrhiza tridentate (or Common Tangle Orchid), which MRWL rescued from the Sippy Creek Interchange works on the Bruce Highway. Unfortunately many others were mulched. Often, when flora identification is done prior to road works, orchids are not seen as they can sometimes live high up in the trees. If they are not flowering most people would not know they are orchids so they are mulched and destroyed without a chance. Translocation of orchids is relatively easy, so next time you go on a tree chopping massacre don’t forget to check the tree on the ground for any epiphytes. We are in the process of talking to Main Roads about translocating any orchids found on trees at their Sippy Creek site and any other sites they might need to clear. MRWL will translocate orchids and epiphytes on construction works. We also do re-vegetation, property assessments, catchment education with schools, vegetable garden support, water quality monitoring, dam care, frog and birdwing butterfly identification and many other conservation projects. Come and see our large range of native plants grown from local seed at the Mooloolah Native Nursery on the Holcim site, Steve Irwin Way, Glenview.

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Pastor Margaret Glasshouse Country Uniting Church Well! There has certainly been a lot of changes going on for me lately; have you and your family been there as well, getting kids off to school for the first time, getting the older ones back on track with routines and setting new ones! We all experience many times of change as we live our lives daily. Ecclesiastes 3:1 ‘For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven’ is one such lesson that I identify with acknowledging that as we grow we change and as we change we grow. It wasn’t like that for an old school chum I met up with recently…he was in my class at High School and Yes! That was a while ago now. He said what I considered the scariest thing anyone has ever said to me. ‘You know I haven’t changed a bit since High School’! I thought to myself wow! Do you even have a mirror in your house? We can all get stuck; stuck in a mode of thinking that won’t allow us to move forward…. ‘I’ve

always done it this way’; Yes, habit can be a good thing and we can all develop good habits; and we all can identify what good habits are; however, we are often blind to being stuck in a way of being or doing things that doesn’t allow us to see that life can be just as good or perhaps just maybe a little better when we look at how we can do things a little differently. There are many things in life that can prevent us from moving forward and accepting the changes that come our way, taking a moment to look at things in a new way and different way can prepare us for what comes next.

Beerwah Ladies Golf Club Contributed by Jenny Kelly What a great day on Thursday for our Men’s Invitation Day. Wonderful weather and great company combined to make this a really enjoyable day for the 113 players who came out to play a Chapman’s Foursomes. No one enjoyed the game more than Cathy Stone and Roger Bonhomme who combined well to win the day with a score of 68 1/8 Nett. Cathy and Roger collected trophies generously donated by lady members Oriel Lyon and Cath Cherry. Runners up on 68 1/4 Nett were Ruth Parish and Peter Purvis while K. Reynolds and T.Ward were second runners up on 69 1/2 Nett. Nearest to the Pins went to I.Good on number 2, Roger Bonhomme on 5, and John Runge took out the 16th. Division 1 NTP on the 18th was Lea Doyle, Div. 2 was Fay Raven and Les Hatchman took out the Men’s NTP on the 18th. The ball rundown went to 73 Nett. A great day was had by all and we will do it all again in three months time. The course is looking lovely, though like all of us, it could do with a bit of rain, just not on Thursdays! Have a great week and stay safe.

year with generous donations for the huge multidraw raffle, lucky lanes, lucky program and sponsorship of various swimming events. These sponsorships provide medals for the swimmers, Rotary Club Splash for Cash and Caloundra RSL Treasure Hunt prizes, and the Quota Club and Maleny Grove Age Champion prizes. Without this local support, the carnival could not take place! Apex and Lions are also keen supporters and are there early in the morning cooking the bacon and egg burgers and the lunchtime barbecue. The Club would like to thank our local state member, Andrew Powell, our local Sunshine Coast Councillor, Jenny McKay, MDSRC President, Greg Williams, and Club Patron, Winston Johnston, for attending and assisting with handing out the medals to the swimmers on the day. The Maleny Swimming Club took out two of the 12 Age Champions: Tom Lewis – 13-year-old boys (tie) and Nikita Lanphier – 14-year-old girls. The Pelican Waters Swim Club won the Club Spirit Award.

Mooloolah Valley Bowls Club

Contributed by Judy Walker On Tuesday Nev Shaw and Judy Walker drew with Lloyd Walker and Eileen Pierce. Members draw won by Eileen Pierce. Friday winners were Horst Jonscher and Eric Wood. Saturday Winners were Eileen Pierce and Barry Russell. We lost a very dear friend on February 17, Ede Clark. She was much loved by all and we will miss her so much. May my best Skip rest in peace. Some good news is the sale of the Country Club. The Bowls Club survives. A week of mixed emotions.

Bogeyman under the bed Ever since I was a child, I’ve always had a fear of someone under my bed at night. So I went to a shrink and told him, “I’ve got problems. Every time I go to bed I think there’s somebody under it. I’m scared. I think I’m going crazy.” “Just put yourself in my hands for one year,” said the shrink. “Come and talk to me three times a week and we should be able to get rid of those fears...” “How much do you charge?” “‘Eighty dollars per visit,” replied the doctor. “I’ll sleep on it,” I said. Six months later the doctor met me on the street.

PISCES February 20 – March 20 Once Mercury is direct in the sign of Aquarius at the end of this week, your skilful intuition and higher self may start to churn out better guidance. Anything you have dreamed of regarding family, children, romance and creative self fulfillment may come into your life under beneficial planetary aspects. ARIES March 21 – April 20 An important turn of events is developing concerning, home, family and property which is promising. A friend or associate may know of something that could aid your career. A past issue resurfaces and it may be necessary to make concessions. A family matter could give you reason to feel happy or optimistic. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This week opens up with the Capricorn Moon, so that will help you with relations with somebody older. Someone in authority will help you express your truest beliefs. As the week progresses from Thursday through to the weekend, an interesting new routine adds an attention getting tone to your professional work. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Towards the end of this week a very nice aspect between the Sun and Jupiter may indeed bring rewards to your professional life. Mercury goes direct this week so you may see a future dream manifest its riches early. It’s best to take a chance on something new and exciting without risking your financial security.

Week beginning 26/02/14

CANCER June 22 – July 22 This week the Moon will move through the signs of Sagittarius, Capricorn and Aquarius. Under the pressure of life expanding planets, you may want to make a fast change or rebirth your life in some way. You might well feel satisfied with what you have earned in love, family, travel and spiritual growth. LEO July 23 – August 22 It’s a week to take care of obligations relating to your family or home. It may even be a lot easier than you think. The planets Jupiter and Uranus work to help you escape from captivity, which is probably self-imposed in your current life experience. A good week to chant ‘freedom’ on the way to a new life. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The field of action this week moves from setting up travel plans and dreaming philosophy, into the practical everyday events of banking and paying bills. A relationship commitment made this week provides stability and longevity. You will awaken each morning with intense desires to seek fulfillment of sharing. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 This week will see you working towards a definite goal. There may be some obstacles to progress but as the month ends, Mercury moves direct, and so you may profit from unexpected changes. There is a good chance of something new or exciting in your professional affairs or relationships. Use wisdom.

SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Mid week with the Moon in Capricorn what was born of the heart last week, can find its roots now, in the stability and security of a grounded, trustworthy commitment. The use of natural products may bless your life in a nurturing life expanding way. There is power for a new start to secure health benefits. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 The Moon this week commences in your sign, so you are ready to step out of the shadows again. Your mood may seem restless but misunderstandings can be freed up as mid-week the Moon moves into the practical stabilising sign of Capricorn. Mercury will help you spend more time with your family. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Understanding is psychically enhanced this week. Good will to others brings easier accord so that people help your ability to handle funds successfully. You want your needs met, and others may easily comply. A good week to have a commitment to a friend, cause, or partner to create a stable relationship. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Meetings with friends will highlight the services you offer. If there is any criticism that may be in the air, do not take anything personally, as some of those who criticize are out of their depth and don’t know how to react. The expansion of your sphere of interest takes place as the Moon enters Aquarius.

“Why didn’t you come to see me about those fears you were having?” he asked. “Well, 80 bucks a visit three times a week for a year is an awful lot of money! A bartender cured me for $10.00. I was so happy to have saved all that money that I went and bought me a new pickup!" “Is that so!” With a bit of an attitude he said, “and how, may I ask, did a bartender cure you?” “He told me to cut the legs off the bed! – Ain’t nobody under there now!” Submitted by Jan and Steve Taficsuk Glass House
