CABOOLTURE

Hi Everyone

I

realised just how obsessed I have become about Telstra’s mobile reception in our local area on Saturday on my way to a relaxing poke around at the Beerwah Recycle Market. Driving along Roberts Road, I suddenly notice that there is a giant cherry picker right up in the air on Reservior Hill – I was so excited that we had to stop the car and get a photo! And knowing how many people in our community who have shared with me their frustrations about having to stand on one leg in the middle of the footpath to receive or make a mobile call – I know plenty of others will be just as excited as me about seeing progress on the mobile phone tower upgrades.

And if you need any proof – I also uploaded a photo to Facebook - on Saturday morning – sadly I did have to drive back to the office to upload the image as couldn’t get any access to my Facebook on my phone while I was at Beerwah! And yes I know before you start emailing me to let me know that I am becoming unhinged – I know I am definitely obsessed with the issue. Every time I turn onto Steve Irwin Way heading from Glass House Mountains my eye is immediately drawn across to Johnston Road where the new Telstra tower is being installed. Strangely I can do this a number of times a day – even though I know not much will have changed in a couple of hours but it just gets my heart fluttering knowing it is getting closer!! Regards,

Tamika and mates get their walking shoes on After losing an aunt and an uncle to cancer, Tamika Milgate decided this year she would like to do something to remember them and to fundraise for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. So she has set herself the challenge of walking from Beerwah Discount Tyres & Batteries to the Golden Beach Tavern at Caloundra and back to Beerwah over the weekend of October 12 and 13. After mentioning her idea to a couple of girlfriends, two of them – Kerri Park and Tiffany Cook decided that they would like support her and decided to participate in the walk with her. Tamika and girls are now full swing into training which will prepare them for the 30km walk each way. Tamika’s goal is to raise $15,000.00. With the fundraising they have already done they have already hit $5,000.00 and when they get to their $15,000.00 Kerri will be having her hair shaved off.

Tamika’s Dad Adrian from Beerwah Discount Tyres and Batteries agreed to donate $5.00 from every scrapped battery to her cause, and they also have a competition set up at the workshop to guess the number of jelly beans they have in their jar. The hot tip is that it is between 3500 – 7504 jelly beans so for a $2.00 guess you could just get lucky. Tamika has also set up a donation page everydayhero.com/au. Just go to the donation tab and enter Tamika Milgate. There is also a donation tin at Beerwah Discount Tyres. The girl’s husbands have even volunteered to do a fundraising barbeque on the Saturday afternoon and they have 278 friends following on their Facebook page – so it seems that Tamika is doing well getting others involved in the journey. As well, they are organising a ‘Faulty Towers Dinner Night’ on Saturday, July 20 at the Beerwah RSL, which includes entertainment and a three course meal (more details on page 21) and they have Bogan Bingo planned for September 7 at the Glasshouse Sports Club. Tickets are $30.00 and can buy them by calling 5494 6167 or dropping into Beerwah Discount Tyres & Batteries. If you want to take a look at their Facebook page search for ‘tkt walk’.

Over the past few weeks it has been made clear to us at GCNews that many local Beerwah businesses and residents are angry at the negative newspaper stories other media outlets have been publishing about the future of Beerwah’s commercial centre. And while the impact of both the Beerwah overpass, and the ‘Global Financial Crisis’ have been devastating for many local businesses - it is critical now more than ever that we adopt a positive approach and focus on moving ahead – and we discontinue the talk of doom and gloom. It’s time for local residents, businesses and Council to get behind each other and to fight back. This was the message that came across loud and clear at the Beerwah Hotel last Wednesday night, when the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce held an information and feedback networking night to look at the Council’s draft Sunshine Coast Economic Development Strategy. Over 70 local business owners and operators participated and while the discussion was at times robust and, on occasion, cynical of Council’s processes, at all times the best interests of locals and local businesses was at the forefront. Cr Baberowski who attended the meeting said the community is fired up and recognises that if there ever was a time to push ourselves forward this is it.

Local business people at the Chamber of Commerce event “The combined effect of Council's major upgrade to Simpson Street, the $15m further development of Beerwah Marketplace and the proposed changes in the draft planning scheme will transform the business environment of Beerwah,” he said. "While that’s happening, Council and business owners will need to work even more closely together to hold and attract customers to the town. “A local business working group has emerged out of the Beerwah Place + process and a really practical range of initiatives is being developed. “The immediate challenge is to prioritise and fast track the top two or three to make them happen quickly. With that in mind I will be working with Council staff and that group to develop opportunities to leverage off the major streetscape upgrade project."

Beerburrum Strongman sets Australian Records

What is 193cm tall, weighs 140kg and can bench press almost four full beer kegs? That would be our new Australian powerlifting record holder, Tim O’Shea. Tim (35), a Beerburrum local and strongman contestant, returned victorious from the recent GPC Australian Powerlifting National Champoinships after setting new Australian records in the Squat, Bench Press and Deadlift. Leaving a successful rugby league career in 2007, in which Tim played in England in 2005, he took up strongman competitions in 2009. Tim competed in the SuperHeavyWeight class, and his Tim O'Shea squats 320kg on his way to winning the best squat of 320kg, best bench SuperHeavyWeight class at the GPC Powerlifting Nationals press of 227.5kg and best deadlift of 280.5kg were good enough to not only win his result qualifies him for the GPC World weight class, but set new Australian records. Powerlifting Championships in Eger, Hungary in September, he will not be attending. “It’s my second time competing at the powerlifting nationals – I won the “Having three kids under four means that I have SuperHeavyWeight division last year as well. to think of my family first. “I was very pleased with exceeding some specific “This is the end of this year’s powerlifting season goals I set after last years nationals, and to do for me. it in front of a big crowd at the Nationals was a “Next I switch to competing in Highland Games real buzz,” Tim said. and will be heading to Toukley, NSW in August,” Over 170 lifters competed over three days at the he said. event, which was hosted at The Rydges Hotel in We wish him all the best in Toukley – hopefully Melbourne. we’ll be able to bring GCNews readers some Tim explained that although this powerlifting photos of Tim in a kilt. www.gcnews.com.au

"I also want Council to work with the chamber and our new 'face' of the Beerwah Place + Action Group Lisa Sauer from Top Gun Paint and Panel to start getting some real festive atmosphere happening this year; and that’s just the short list,” Cr Baberowski said. Face of, and spokesperson for, the Place + Action Group Lisa Saucer said she feels that there are issues that business owners who attended the recent Chamber meeting would like to discuss further and the Community Place + Action Group is an avenue for that to happen. “The idea of the group is to get Beerwah business owners together in one place to identify issues affecting local business and to brainstorm how these issues can be overcome. “We need to identify the most important issue and then work as a collective group to effect positive change. “The next meeting is on Tuesday, July 16 at BADYACC, at the Beerwah Sportsground and kicks off at 6.00pm, so if you would like to come along – we would love to see and hear some of your ideas,” Lisa said. Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce President Bob McLean said he was pleased with the number of local businesses that came along to the meeting and their feedback to Council. “I have begun to notice a shift in attitudes lately, in recent weeks I have experienced a more positive outlook from the Beerwah business community,” he said.

“The pending Beerwah Marketplace expansion being approved by council and the capital injection this will bring may have been the trigger, with locals excited about the injection of new life into the Beerwah CBD. “As the President of the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce I have been working with a number of local, state and interstate groups and on bigger picture future planning and strategy to boost the customer numbers through the doors of local businesses,” said Bob. It is true that some businesses have closed or moved from being shop-based to being homebased or trading on-line but at the same time, there has been five new businesses opening (or about to open) in Beerwah which is a really positive indicator for the local economy. Local traders understand that just expecting people to shop with them because they should isn’t an effective strategy and that they need to remind local residents about just how important it is for our communities to back the future of towns by backing local business. Chamber member Shannon Greenwood from Hinterland Body and Soul is encouraging local businesses to support a State Government’s “Think Queensland Shop Locally” initiative. And she is also working on developing up a survey to research the attitudes of locals to shopping locally. When Council’s Beerwah Place + project originally got underway there was plenty of

Craig Matheson from Sunshine Coast Council addresses the crowd optimism in the community about what that would mean for Beerwah’s business area, and with Council’s budget being announced this week – the local business community is keen to see what improvements council will fund for the 2013 / 2014 financial year. Local spending is core business for local traders, and while attracting a few more tourist dollars is great it’s the regular spending from the thousands of us who live and work in the area that makes the real difference. If we all consider how we spend, collectively we can make a difference. Before taking out our wallet or purse - we all need to think can I buy that locally? Is the couple of dollars you’ll save worth driving to the coast or ordering online? Everyone wants Beerwah to be a vibrant place where locals choose to come because they want to not just because they feel they have to – so why not become part of the solution? Nobody wants to see Beerwah become a ghost town and everyone has a role to play in making sure that never happens.

Pain in the back? Is your back often stiff and sore? Does it take a while to get out of bed in the mornings? Have you given up hobbies you once enjoyed because the pain just isn’t worth it? Do you feel older than you really are? If so, we may be able to help. It is estimated that approximately 85 per cent of the population will experience low back pain at some stage of their lives. Despite its prevalence, it is by no means normal to experience any level of pain on a regular basis. The normal state of the human body is vibrant, healthy, and pain-free. If you are not feeling this way, something is pushing your body away from normal. We are all well aware that diet and exercise are key factors in keeping our bodies feeling great. What most people don’t know about is Spinal Subluxation, a term chiropractors use to describe dysfunctional vertebrae in the spine. This is a very common condition that pushes the body away from functioning normally and feeling great. Subluxations can be caused by old or new injuries, but most often are caused by repetitive stresses of everyday life. Low back and pelvic subluxations can also lead to further symptoms, such as hip and knee pain, or digestive troubles. There are many causes of back pain, and each cause requires a specific treatment. If your back pain is caused by Spinal Subluxation, the chiropractic adjustment is the only therapy that will correct the cause. To find out if Spinal Subluxation is the cause of your decreased quality of life, call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today, or visit www.adjusttolife.com.au Beerwah 5494 0499 or Maroochydore 5443 4545 www.gcnews.com.au

The criteria for the competition was to paint someone from The Northern Rivers (Lismore, NSW area) who the artist believed to be of value to themselves and or the community. Having grown up in the area where her family still live, Sally had no trouble choosing her subject to paint, she had actually decided she would like to paint avid vegetable gardener and Kyogle local Doug 11 years ago, before she made the move to Peachester. Sally said that Doug is blind and what he can achieve in his amazing vegetable Sally with the painting garden without sight is a constant source of inspiration to her and the greater Kyogle community – he literally feeds the town with his produce. Sally, who worked at Australia Zoo as a Graphic Designer for seven years before becoming a stay at home mum, had doubts about combining motherhood with being an artist. Admitting that finding the solitary and uninterrupted time necessary to paint does not come without challenges, so naturally she was really pleased with the results from this, her first art prize she has entered. From August last year until April, Sally has devoted at least five - seven hours, each week, to her art practice, which was predominately spent on this painting. “As an artist I cannot imagine what life would be like without being able to see, and sadly while Doug will never see this painting, I wanted others to share what Doug chooses to see with his hands,” Sally said. If you are heading over the border the exhibition is open until July 14. For more information visit www.lismoregallery.org

The changing face of Landsborough There are a few changes happening in and around Landsborough at the moment. You would have noticed the road works on Caloundra Road at the Steve Irwin Way turnoff. This is a Sunshine Coast Council project to formalise the entry into the gravel car park at Pioneer Park (the all-abilities playground) before the road is resurfaced. Almost complete now, the improvements were initiated by Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski from his Divisional infrastructure allocation. Cr Baberowski said that the area has waited quite a while for the attention it deserves. “A while back I identified that this area was in need of some desperate help to improve safety and functionality for road and park users. “As well as improving the visual amenity, the strip provides an important gateway into Landsborough and the hinterland areas beyond. “I made available some of my Divisional infrastructure budget to make the project happen, and I’m looking forward to the followup landscaping and the road rehabilitation to complete the face-lift,” he said.

Another great project just completed is Stage 2 of the Skippy Park concept plan, in which new playground equipment at on Old Landsborough Road recreation reserve has been installed. Skippy Park has evolved into a fantastic local and regional open space resource – with large playing fields, a wide shared pedestrian / cycle track, picnic facilities and now an even larger playground. According to Cr Baberowski, the new additions – including a dual flying fox and a pyramid climbing net – greatly add to the natural play features already at the park. “I’m really proud of what Skippy Park has become for the community,” he said. “By providing nature-based play areas – such things as climbing trees, stepping stones, and now a flying fox and climbing pyramid – we are able to move the concept of a playground away from the traditional hard infrastructure of forts, plastic castles and slides, towards something which is much more engaging and interesting for children and parents alike.”

New pathway for Simpson Street

Work has commenced on a new pathway along Simpson Street in Beerwah, extending the current path from the Kilcoy-Beerwah Road pedestrian underpass north to Mill Park. Stage 1 is the construction of a 2.5 metre wide pathway linking the existing pathway to the large car park opposite the Aldi supermarket entry. The pathway from there to Mill Park will be done as part of the Beerwah Streetscape Project. This initial stage of the pathway construction is a jointly funded project between Sunshine Coast Council and State Government under the South East Queensland Cycle Network Local Government Grants program. The State Government are providing $600,000 towards the delivery of this entire pathway project. The future pathway stages are intended to be constructed within the proposed Beerwah Streetscape Project, the designs for which are still being finalised by Council officers. Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski is delighted that Council can make a small start on improving the township. “This stage 1 work will not only improve the pathway network to the schools and aquatic centre, it will also tidy up an unsightly area while making more of the vegetated areas at the entries to our town. “I thank the traders and residents for their patience during construction,” he said. Work on the stage 1 pathway is anticipated to take four weeks, depending on the weather.

Police Beat Flavourites

with/ flav(a)ret/ Senior Sergeant Bruce Flav our ite noun A tasty delight whichDuck is particularly well liked. with James Janssen from LattE Da Cafe I remember 30 odd years ago, mum cooking us corned silverside and white sauce served with overcooked peas, carrots, corn and mash with her microwave white sauce. ... ahh the memories, but still today it is a great meal to sit down to on a cold winter’s night. However these days, I do my corned silverside in the slow cooker. I still use the same method for the sauce but add in a few more things to put my slant on it and enjoy it served with crunchy steamed vegetables. Doing white sauce aka Béchamel in the microwave might go against the grain for some chefs, but to me it means less dishes. Place silverside in a large pot and cover with cold water, bring to the boil and drain. Rinse off silverside from all impurities and scum. Place in a slow cooker with 1 chopped onion, a handful of brown sugar, 6 whole cloves, 3 bay leaves, 3 large sprigs of parsley, ½ cup or white or brown vinegar, 6 spins from the pepper grinder and cover with cold water. Allow 30 mins per 500g on simmer. For the sauce, melt 40 grams of butter in large microwave safe jug, add 40 grams of flour stirring quickly, put back in microwave cook for 30 seconds, stir and cook for another 30 secs. Add 500 ml of milk, whisk well making sure it doesn’t stick to the bottom of the jug. Heat for a minute, whisk well and repeat this until sauce has come to the boil. Then simmer at low power for a minute, add a tablespoon capers (optional) and a tablespoon finely chopped sundried tomatoes or capsicum and stir. Before serving, add 3 good sprigs of finely chopped curly parsley and some grated tasty cheese or blue cheese if you prefer. Stir until cheese is melted, season and serve. Serve with a selection of the usual winter suspects, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, brussel sprouts and beans. Rotary Calendar on display

Community News Glasshouse Musicians Club We have our very own Contributed by Michael Whiticker District Governor! The Musos met recently at the Sports Club in Glass House and it was yet another memorable evening with a good sized audience in attendance. It seems I am often waxing lyrical about artists that appear for us, and why not when they are as talented as those that grace our stage, week after week! The high standard was set for us this session by two new acts, one being vocalist Steph with guitarist Job (i.e. the biblical Job), who are simply terrific. Their set was short but marked by the impressive acoustic guitar playing by Job and the fine vocal presentation of Steph in numbers such as Tom Petty’s ‘Free Falling’. Job also set his pedals up for a Jon Brown set and laid down some searing lines for the old blues number ‘Stormy Monday’ followed by Pink Floyd’s ‘Time’, and yes, that is the great Dave Gilmour’s guitar playing that he was attempting to emulate. Playing last week as well was newcomer - singer guitarist Brian Doddridge. He was just passing through on his way home to South Australia which is our loss, as his playing and singing of numbers such as Neil Young’s ‘Old Man’ were moving, and his blues harmonica accompaniment for John Brown was foot tappin’ good! Also on this evening was a striking short djembe set from Adrien and Kaf, and the ‘Rusty Old Strings’ with Gerry, Greg and Doug beltin’ out a fine bluegrass set. JJ and the Jealous Guys appeared as well, with Jon, Tony and Adrien backing JJ’s mature vocal showing in Ben Harpur’s ‘Steal My Kisses’. JJ may only be 10 but his young voice is developing exceptionally well. He has a big future. In the vocal arena Tina Davidson included in her set a powerful reading of ‘House of the Rising Sun’. Thank you Tina! Doug Pullen, Lawrie White and Frank Moroney also gave us their typically reliable sets helping to make it a good evening for all at the Sports Club.

A huge event for the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains took place in the Municipal Hall at Beerwah last week with the induction of our own local Rotarian Trevor Taylor as 2013-2014 District Governor. All 160 invited guests and friends enjoyed great food (of course Pasta D’Vine), good company, good music (some Rotarian even dared to crowd the dance floor) and reminders of why Rotary work is so important in local and international communities. The District Governor (DG) is nominated by the clubs in the entire district, and then elected two years prior to his year as Governor of the District. The District Governor appoints assistant governors from the clubs throughout the district to assist in the management of Rotary activities. This will be a very busy year for Trevor and Robyn but we (his fellow Rotarians) are confident that his DG year will be prosperous and highly successful. To showcase the importance of this event, our Rotary Club will display the flag ‘Home of the District Governor’ at all meetings.

Newly inducted District Governor Trevor Taylor and ‘first Lady’ Robyn

The photos for the Rotary Calendar are displayed at the Beerwah Library and will be on show until June 28. At 4.30pm on that day the winners will be announced. The lucky winner of the people’s choice photo will be on the front cover of the calendar and will win a Fuji camera sponsored by Fuji and Australia Zoo. The 12 photos chosen by our independent judges will adorn each of the 12 months and will be presented with photo vouchers from the Australia Zoo Photo Lab. There is still time to vote, so come along and have a look at the display.

Warm raffle winner

Contributed by Coral Robinson Beerwah RSL Women’s Auxiliary recently ran a three day ‘Winter Warmer’ raffle. The main part of the prize was a beautiful rug crocheted by two of the ladies from the auxiliary. It was won by Trish Bradford of Glass House Mountains. Thanks to everyone who bought tickets, your support is very much appreciated.

Friends of Bankfoot House – AGM and Booklet Launch June 16 Friends of Bankfoot House Inc. Annual General Meeting 2013, held at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club, saw the return of all previous management committee members. Ron Gillinder (President), Helen Page (Vice President), Keith Pennell (Secretary), Elaine Reeves (Treasurer) and Jo Barrett (Committee Member). Following the formal meeting proceedings, the Hon. Andrew Powell MP introduced Anna Eggmolesse to launch the booklet, ‘Bankfoot House – A journey through time’. Of course Anna needed no introduction to the gathered members and guests as she was well known in her former role as Cr Anna Grosskreutz. Anna’s attendance was significant as she had chaired the public meeting seven years ago that established the volunteer community group, Friends of Bankfoot House. The booklet describes the historical origins of the heritage-listed residence as well as information on the three generations of the families who lived at Bankfoot House for a period of over 130 years. More than 40 photographs have been reproduced in the booklet and preview the wide range of family photographs held in the collection. Initially the booklet will be on sale at Bankfoot House but is expected to be available more broadly when the distribution arrangements are finalised. For further information contact Friends of Bankfoot House, phone 5493 0197, email friends@bankfoothouse.org. Ron Gillinder – President – 0407 760 989, in conjunction with the Sunshine Coast Council.

The Glasshouse Country Super Strawberry Competition is on again for 2013, with the first round closing on Friday, July 5. As in previous years there will be eight rounds, with each weekly winner receiving a six-pack from the Beerwah Hotel. Growers should present entries at Coochin Creek Co-op for weigh-in and display before 4.00pm on Fridays. (Ask for David or Helen). Since 1996, this annual competition has inspired keen competition and impressive entries, the all-time champion weighing in at 245 grams was Shane Frizzo, in 2006. In 2012 the winning fruit, weighing 175 grams, was grown by John Allen’s Oaklands Farms. The Super Strawberry Competition runs each year in conjunction with the Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival, an annual fund-raiser for Cancer Council Queensland. The 2013 Champion will be announced at the sports day on Saturday, August 24 at Beerwah Sports Ground. For information about the Super Strawberry Competition or about the Charity Sports, please contact Bruce Page on 5494 9557.

Funds shared with local heritage groups

Palmview boy to live ultimate AFL Grand Final experience Finnegan Neighbour of Palmview, will well and truly be ‘Footified’ when he plays on the MCG during the 2013 Toyota AFL Grand Final. Finnegan was recently selected as the Round 12 nominee for the NAB AFL Auskicker of the Year Award. He was selected by NAB and the AFL, ahead of thousands of other entries based on his outstanding attitude and approach to the game. This year, 22 Auskickers who best reflect dedication, enthusiasm, teamwork and passion will travel to Melbourne to participate in a moneycan’t-buy experience. They will march in the 2013 Toyota AFL Grand Final Parade, play on the MCG on Grand Final day and present medals to the 2013 premiership players. In addition to the Toyota AFL Grand Final experience of a lifetime, Finnegan is now in the running to win $5,000 in a NAB Smart Junior Saver account plus Geelong Captain and three-time premiership player Joel Selwood as his personal footy mentor in 2014. Every week 180,000 children and their parents head to one of 2,800 Auskick centres around the country to participate in NAB AFL Auskick.

Real life super heroes

When Year 2 students from GCCC dressed up as real life super heroes on Friday, June 14 there was not a Superman or Ironman to be seen. The children chose to dress as police officers, fire-fighters, doctors, nurses, wildlife rangers, scientists, and much more. Students had been learning about goods and services in the community throughout the term and now it was time for some fun. Rotational activities were set up across the Primary campus to help the children role play different jobs. There was the postman’s corner to see who could deliver mail the fastest; a photographers’ studio where students took photos of each other with iPads; and GCCC’s little red café where waiters who were dressed up as policemen took orders for pretend coffee and cake. The butcher’s shop was popular with students making play dough sausages but the challenge of decorating real cupcakes with lollies in the bakery was much more exciting. GCCC’s sandpit was turned into a giant archaeological dig with buried treasure and the junior undercover area became an artist’s gallery with bright and colourful paintings. Students relished bandaging each other up in the first aid corner and they loved erecting tall towers at the building site. It was a lovely sunny day filled with laughter and learning made all the more enjoyable because of the wonderful parents who volunteered their time to help. Dominic Blinston (right) immerses himself in the role of patient as Bryce Sambrook (left) 'treats' him in the first aid corner

Pyjamas uniform of the day

Matthew Richardson interviews Finnegan during a recent Friday night’s AFL broadcast

Getting ready to head to the Goodstart Early Learning Centre Glasshouse Mountains was made much cosier last week when the children and staff wore their pyjamas for the day. No it wasn’t just about keeping warm, but it was to help raise funds for the Pyjama Foundation. The foundation helps support children in the Foster System by giving them a new set of pyjamas when they enter a new home. The idea behind the program is that a good set of pyjamas equals a great night’s sleep. The families and staff supported the cause through a gold coin donation along with donations of new sets of pyjamas.

Black belt for Ellen

Just this month, Glass House Mountains girl Ellen Clark, achieved one of the goals she’d set herself from a young age – attaining Junior Black Belt in Rhee Tae Kwon Do. Ellen was assessed and personally promoted by no less an exponent than World Master Chong Chul Rhee who attends the Sunshine Coast four times per year specifically for these occasions. World Master Chong Chul Rhee, is the founder of Tae Kwon Do in Australia, head of the Rhee Tae Kwon-Do Organisation, World Master Instructor and Chief Instructor for Australia and New Zealand. He is also the President of the Tae Kwon Do Instructors' Federation of Australia and New Zealand. Through hard work, dedication and a willingness to learn, Ellen achieved her goal in a confident and determined manner showing her knowledge and ability in the Art of Rhee Tae Kwon Do. Ellen attends Rhee Tae Kwon Do at Landsborough on Mondays and Wednesdays and assists at Glass House Mountains on Tuesdays and Thursdays with Master Rhee appointed instructor Robert Frizzo. Fund raiser a runaway success

Recently the Glass House Mountains State School held an Adidas School Fun-Run and raised $6,677.95 in vital extra funding. Students pounded the pavements seeking sponsorship from family, friends and members of the local community in order to raise money for their school. Thanks to their enthusiasm and the support of the local community, extra funds are now available to purchase new resources for the school. Adidas School Fun-Run organiser Matt Potter is extremely proud of the way the students rallied behind the fundraiser. “It was great to see so many students supporting their school by collecting sponsorship and participating on the day,” Matt said. The Adidas School Fun-Run program provides an avenue for schools and community groups to raise extra funding while encouraging students to participate in healthy lifestyle activities. Olympian and Adidas School Fun-Run Ambassador Craig Mottram said, “Adidas and myself are thrilled to be uniting with schools right across Australia. Together with participating schools, we hope to inspire a nation to better health and wellbeing.” www.gcnews.com.au

Jeff and Debbie Willis will have to put their healthy eating programs aside so they can tuck into a big birthday cake to mark the Bank of Queensland Beerwah’s 10th birthday celebrations. They will be sharing the cake with many customers / friends who come into the bank next Thursday. Over the years Glasshouse Country News have included many stories about the community projects that have been involved with. My personal favouite is when they got behind 'Kids in banking' it isn't everyday that you see your bank manager in his PJs! More recently they have been doing plenty to support Beerwah local Emily Madden in her efforts to raise funds to travel overseas for medical treatment. Thanks BOQ and we wish you many happy returns. The Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club has formally appointed a new manager. Kylie Cherry has taken on the role, following the departure of Jay Globits from the Club earlier in the year. The title may be new, but Kylie has been working at the Club since 2008 and has been involved in all aspects of the Club’s operation during that time. She has taken up the role of Manager with great enthusiasm, with the able assistance of Kylee Thompson, and is efficient, capable and very organised. Between them, the girls have been doing a fantastic job and the Sports Club is starting to ‘hum’ again. Drop in and see what’s happening at the Sports Club, or come for a meal on Thursday or Friday evening. The club committee guarantee you will notice a difference! At Glasshouse Country Meats, Murray and Michelle Samuel have expanded their range to include gourmet condiments, spices, sauces and dressings. The latest items to be added to their range are from Toscana, a certified organic olive grove. Toscana produce award-winning organic olive oils, table olives and artisan vinegars. Michelle has chosen to stock their range of Olive Oils including Lemon Pressed, Garlic Infused, and Tuscan Herb Infused varieties of the Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oils. They have also introduced Gooralie Free Range Pork, which is farmed in Goondiwindi and is the only RSPCA accredited pork in Queensland. Murray reckons that raising pigs in a stress free environment improves their taste and tenderness. Don't forget they do a customer draw for a $20.00 meat voucher each week. Brett and Megan Standring, owners of Crook Neck Retreat at Glass House Mountains, are rapt to have received a TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence award. The accolade, which honours hospitality excellence, is given only to establishments that consistently achieve outstanding traveller reviews on www. tripadvisor.com. Only the top performing 10% of businesses listed on the site receive this prestigious award. By Mike Turner (Bass player for the Superdads) Hi guys, my name is Mike and I play bass with a local band called the Superdads – we are just a bunch of guys who love playing music. The ‘Superdads’ name came from something that our guitarist Pete said once. “I don’t just want to be an average dad, I want to be an exceptional dad.” I think something in that kinda resonated with us – sort of a reminder to us of how important it is being a dad to our kids. I would like to point out that mums are incredible and sometimes I think they are secretly superheroes with all they do and put up with… but we want to focus on dads in this column. Please bear with us mums… Being a dad is not easy… Firstly, there is the fact that it can freak you out when you first become a dad. ‘Oh my gosh! I am a dad,’ and then you have sleep deprivation and the massive change of having to share your wife / partner with a little kid. I tell you what though – that moment when you first hold your son or daughter is unreal. It’s like you have this massive love for a little dude that you’ve only just met – strange but awesome! As the journey goes on we learn more about what it means to be a dad, a couple of years on a whole new phrase comes into view, ‘setting boundaries with kids’. As you know, this can be trying especially when we are tired from work and our patience can really be tested. This is when the ‘rubber hits the road’ kind of stuff. This is when we’ve got to ‘man up’ and help the mums with our families. The Superdads – we are a bunch of guys who love playing music and have This is our veryTheir first newspaper as a band;their we are hoping thatsaid we formed a band. name camecolumn from something guitarist Pete will be able to bring something each month that is of use and a source of once… “I don’t just want to be an average dad, I want to be an encouragement dads out there. exceptional dad”to– all theyou idea resonated with them.

Eagle Boys and Winter a perfect match Winter time can be a real drag. The sun goes down early, it’s colder and you just don’t seem to have the get-up-and-go that you have in summer. I know that the thought of going home and cooking if it’s already dark and chilly (and wet) when you leave work, can sometimes be just too much. So picking up a pizza at Eagle Boys in Beerwah is the perfect antidote to beating the winter blues. And to make things even easier, they have such a simple system - order your pizza on-line before you leave work and then just stop by on your way home and pick it up. And what I hadn’t expected from ordering on line is that you can customise your order, add extra toppings and generally be quite fussy which suits

me just fine. With the State of Origin series on again and plenty of other footy across the weekends what better footy food is there than mouth watering pizza – washed down with a cold beverage of your choice. And I know that most of us are watching how we spend these days – but I have a hot tip on how to regularly enjoy Eagle Boys and not break the budget. You can buy when they have a two or three pizza deal. Then just freeze the extra one and then have it the following week, or take it in your lunchbox to work the next day. The Family Feast promotional deal from $22.95 for pick-up remains a popular favourite. This includes two large traditional pizzas, garlic

bread and a ‘Dessert Thingy’. Or if you are having a few people around, you might want to try the Fan Feast Quad which is basically two Family Feasts and it will only set you back $39.95 pick-up. It is definitely worth going on line and checking out the great deals as well as some of their new and improved topping pizzas that they have on offer. And for those who want to spicy it up on these cold winter nights – you can’t beat The Scorcher or the Peri Peri Chicken each from $13.95. So head to www.eagleboys.com.au and remember throughout winter Eagle Boys Beerwah is open from 4.00pm.

Rick Baberowski Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council P: 5420 8987 Beerwah Part of a shared pathway along Simpson Street has started construction in Beerwah. I am delighted we can make a small start on improving our township and this stage 1 work will not only improve the pathway network to the schools and aquatic centre, it will also tidy up an unsightly area while making more of the vegetated areas at the entries to our town. The improved pathway may even encourage a few more onto a bicycle to make a trip into our great country town. Council is close to finalising the budget for the next financial year so you can expect more news to follow soon regarding the start of street scaping works in Beerwah.

Old Gympie Road Don’t be surprised about only seeing minor spot repairs and surface maintenance on Old Gympie Road while the road rehabilitation work cures. The road will be top-sealed in about two weeks’ time but given the nightmare this wet weather has created for our on-ground crew, it is quite likely to take a little longer.

Caloundra Street at Pioneer Park Significant improvement to the entry into Landsborough is already visible at Caloundra Street near Pioneer Park. The work will be a massive improvement when it’s completed and will totally change the look and feel of the entry area. The site had been deteriorating over the years as it was being used as an informal car park and truck stop that was damaging the road surface and shredding the road edge. Soon there will be a formalised car park entry and exit with proper edging and landscaping contributing to a much better gateway to the township.

Jenny McKay

Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 Senior Sergeant Bruce Duck was a very welcome guest at the June Mooloolah breakfast meeting. It was good to hear from a police perspective that Mooloolah has a low crime rate and is considered a safe community to live in. He took on board a number of issues raised by locals, including traffic concerns, and we look forward to having him back in the future. The next Mooloolah breakfast meeting is on Thursday, July 4 at 7.30am at Thunderbird cafe. After many false starts, removal of the old Girl Guides Hut and the remains of the Old Cream Shed building at Mooloolah Valley Recreational Reserve is about to start. The most recent attempt was thwarted by wet weather (which could happen again) but here’s hoping the safety issues associated with the old buildings will be removed along with the buildings soon. World Environment Day at Sunshine Coast University is going from strength to strength. There’s a wonderfully strong emphasis on fun learning activities for young people and I was quite blown away with what my grandkids picked up in one afternoon in relation to recycling and reusing. We paid close attention to toilet systems and the importance of knowing what goes down and where it ends up! Speaking of reusing, have you considered getting a green waste bin at your home? The bins help keep the local environment clean and green because the plant material is shredded, aged and turned into mulch. Grass cuttings, leaves, small branches, weeds and cut up palm fronds can be put in a green waste bin that’s then collected every fortnight for $75.00 per year. Call council on 5475 7272 or check the website to find out more. Remember to check out what’s happening at Sunshine Coast libraries and galleries this school holidays as there’s a huge amount of activities for young people of all ages. 20

Subsiding Solar?

I find Mr Powell`s statement regarding non-solars subsidising solars offensive to say the least, especially coming from the Environment Minister. Solar investors along with everyone else were subjected to prolonged and continuous advice by all the climate experts that solar investment would be beneficial to State, Nation, and savings for one and all, especially self-funded retirees and pensioners. Mr Powell along with his Party were somewhat unheard in their opposition of Solar. Now while guaranteeing to pay the subsidy imply they will seek alternative means to levy solars. This sits alongside Jim Soorley's quest to levy reliers on tank water who are supposedly being subsidised by those poor unfortunates grossly overcharged for town water. A recent statement made that all politicians are out of touch with the people starts to ring true. Mr Powell be careful when you kick a sleeping dog, especially one that may be solar powered. Pet owners beware

I would like to advise pet owners that if they leave their pets at kennels that they make sure they carry out the proper administration of medication. Last Christmas, I entrusted a kennel with the care of my two beautiful dogs for 15 days. One of the dogs was on heart medication and diuretics, so I took the containers from my vet with 30 tablets in each one and gave them to the kennels. The dosage was quite clearly marked on each container of one tablet twice daily. When I went to pick my dogs up, the dog on medication was struggling to walk. I was handed one of the containers back and advised that there were some tablets left over. My dog was not well that night and four days later the hard decision had to be made to put my beautiful boy to sleep as my vet advised me that his lungs were full of fluid. I contacted the kennels and they told me I must have given them too many tablets (as there were 17 of the 30 left). I knew how many tablets there were as I’d checked them three times because I knew how important the correct dosage was. The kennel said they couldn’t understand what had happened and that they were sorry. The kennel promotes that they attend to ‘medication administration’ – but obviously in this case it was not done properly. Please make sure that if you are leaving your pets in a kennel, you make absolutely sure that they fully understand what medications need to be administered and how often – as I wouldn’t like anyone else to have the heartache I have suffered because of this. Where are the police patrols?

I was interested to read in last week’s GCNews that once again there have been a number of theft crimes from parked cars recently, a regular occurrence in this area. In the meantime, it appears our local police have been busy focussing on speeding motorists, in particular an elderly gentleman in Beerwah. The local police should at least be performing regular drive-by patrols of the visitor car parks at the mountain sites to provide some kind of criminal deterrent. Surely they could factor that into their busy days instead of sitting on the roadside with speed guns? How long would it take? An hour or two? Our local shop owners in GHM have been victimised many times by thieves, and it will happen again if they are seen as easy targets. I too have been a victim, when my home was invaded and burgled. The local police could not have been less interested at the time, or indeed less helpful, in fact they did not even bother to attend until the following day. Why don’t we ever see police cars actually patrolling locally around GHM in an effort to discourage thieves and reduce local crimes? I only ever see them parked up on the roadside with speed guns. It’s high time we saw them doing some real police work instead of just picking off local drivers yet again in a shameless case of State revenue raising. Name supplied Glass House Mountains

Pastor Brendan Edwards Glasshouse Community Church The other day my family and I were heading to Palmwoods for my niece’s first birthday party where I was also invited by my brother and his wife to do a dedication for little Emily at the same time. While in the car my six-year-old boy Wil asked what that meant, to be dedicated that is. My wife began to explain, “It is where we pray a blessing over her, and her parents agree to do their best to teach her and raise her in a way that when she is old enough to understand, she will decide to be a Christian as well.” Immediately a look of deep concern and confusion came over my son’s face, my precious little boy, son of a minister, raised in the church, burst out in alarm, “A Christian? Are they insane?” His response had his mother and I in hysterics and his older sister in outrage. “Wil!” Lucy retorted. “We’re all supposed to be a Christian! A Christian is someone who loves God and believes in Jesus and cares for people…..” she continued on explaining. “Oh ok.” He replied. “As long as she does those things I guess she’ll be ok.”

I still have no idea what image came to mind when the term ‘Christian’ was used that day, I guess we don’t use it that much as a family, but it does ask the question for me about the way we are portrayed as people of faith today. Are we seen to be people living as inspired by God’s love and led by His Holy Spirit? Or more often seen as a people not led by love but ready to argue and defend anything that is in conflict with our beliefs? There’s a beautiful image in Zechariah 8:2023 where 10 men from foreign countries and different languages cling to the sleeve of one Jew saying, ‘Please let us walk with you, for we have heard that God is with you.’ Whatever the religious title, label or stigma, may we be people that others really see God in. That way our children aren’t confused when it comes to explaining who we are and who’s we are.

Beerwah Ladies Golf

Contributed by Jenny Kelly It was a big day for the ladies with a Monthly Medal and the final round of our Club Championships being held on Thursday. The weather was much kinder and we were able to finish without getting wet. Our Monthly Medal was once again sponsored by our Club Professional, John, and we had a great field of 69 players. Division 1 was won by Andrea Campbell who came in with a great score of 71 Nett, followed by Barb Whitfield on 75 Nett. Winner of the Gross was Karen Kemp with 91 off the stick. Division 2 winner was Noelene Annakin on 72 Nett, with Di Flint runner up on 75 Nett. Margaret Zonca won the gross by shooting a 98 off the stick. Winner of Division 3 was Di Smith on 72 Nett, runner up Lyn Steele shot a 76 Nett and gross winner Roselie Green had 108 off the stick. Lea Garner putted well to win the putting with 27 putts. NTP's went to Andrea on 2, Mavis Brimelow on 5, Brid John on 16 and Fay Barry took out the 18th. We were finally able to complete the delayed final round of the Club Championships and our new club champion is Andrea Campbell. Andrea played lovely consistent golf, especially on the last day and is a well deserved winner of the title. The new B Grade champion is Jennifer Kelly. C Grade also saw a new champion with Beth Butler taking the title by just two strokes. Congratulations ladies, on four great rounds of golf. The winners of the Nett were Cathy Stone in A Grade, Pat Plowman in B Grade and Ruth Parish won C Grade. Now we can look forward to the Match Play Championship where the top eight in each grade play off for the title of Match Play Champion. Until next time, take care and good golfing.

HBC differs greatly from commercial gyms - our club culture and high energy environment fosters a sense of community where you are not just a solitary member, our clients motivate each other and everyone feels welcome. Feedback on our fee structure has been very positive with people telling us they love the flexibility and do not want to be locked into membership and hit with cancellation fees if they are not happy with the service provided or their situation changes. Drop in to see what HBC can offer you or come and watch our boxers in action at local competitions.

with Edgar J. Winter - www.astroclairvoyant.com CANCER June 22 – July 22 This is likely to be another strange week for you as there are some emotional see-saws to deal with, requiring give and take in caring and in conversations. Jupiter enters your sign, so if reading this on Wednesday, get ready for celestial blessings that increase your faith in yourself. LEO July 23 – August 22 When Jupiter goes into the sign of Cancer this week it’s best not to get careless with your diet or health. Shy away from distractions that divert you from an honest day’s work. If there are complications at home, try to stay positive, contact your elders and show respect. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 This week signals a need for creative pleasures for your own inner child. Define the boundary between time for yourself and time for your social life, or between commitment and freedom. With Jupiter entering Cancer you will feel the warm, expansive glow of friendships now. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Librans may find communications are tricky this week as Mercury prepares to go retrograde. You can’t be too casual when it comes to verifying that you have, and are working with, the right information. Details can be easily overlooked. Re adjustment of your home affairs.

SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Joyful Jupiter enters the sign of Cancer for a year this week, broadening already rising hopes about the future. Cosmic blessings support big ideas with Neptune in Pisces and Saturn brings positive thinking working through your sign. All water signs are perfectly aligned for you. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Someone with a lot more financial experience can be helpful to you, setting the stage for a big gain in the year ahead. Creative imagination is at work, so what you yearn for can seem more feasible. When it comes to sport, recreation and pleasure, see if you can attend some games. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 The last Capricorn full Moon continues to bounce against your emotions. As Jupiter enters Cancer for one full year it lets you stand tall individually but also wants you to embrace a partnership. Venus enters Leo, challenging you to share the fruits of recent partnerships. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 Just protect yourself by not selling yourself short. Work on your self image and remind yourself of your past accomplishments. Venus at the end of the week, moving into the sign of Leo, sees that a desired item could materialise. Creativity and harmony in all relationships for you.

PISCES February 20 – March 20 From this week you are entering into a once in a lifetime contract with the universal energy forces to have a Grand Trine of Water Signs. This means that Jupiter enters Cancer for a year, opening up enhanced opportunities with Saturn in sound Scorpio and Neptune in magic Pisces! ARIES March 21 – April 20 From the full Moon in Sagittarius from June 23 to Mercury retrograde on June 27, your family, home and outside interests are in an uneasy mix. If a friend requires time or attention, offer only what you can give without resentment. Venus into Leo gives you a month of fun. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This full Moon from last Sunday to the weekend of June 29 probably sees you wanting to stay in bed all day! Jupiter enters the sign of Cancer from Wednesday bringing opportunities and hope right to your doorstep. It usually brings meat pies, apple custards and minestrone soups! GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Even though the share market seems to be turning back into favour, the good phrase to remember is ‘neither a borrower or a lender be’. Your luck has not deserted you; it’s just that Jupiter has left your sign for the increasing appetites of Cancer. It can boost your monthly profits.

the window and sure enough there was a box giftwrapped in the middle of the driveway. Confused, the wife put on her robe and ran out to the driveway, and brought the box back in the house. She opened it and found a brand new bathroom scale. Tom has been missing since Friday. W.Morris, Glass House Mountains

Tom was in big trouble. He’d forgotten his wedding anniversary and his bossy wife was upset and angry. “Tomorrow morning, I expect to find a gift in the driveway that goes from 0 to 200 in six seconds and it better be there,” she said. The next morning he got up early and left for work. When his wife woke up, she looked out
