Hi Everyone Well there has been plenty in the media about the changes currently being introduced by the ‘media giants’ in Australia. So dear readers as the independently owned Glasshouse Country News does not quite fit into that category it is definitely business as usual for us. At GCNews we pride ourselves on being the ultimate information source about what is happening in the Glasshouse Country region and as always encourage you if you have something newsworthy to share with the rest of the community to let us know! Keeping our community informed and connected plays a vital part in developing our community spirit and making our community strong – and I believe the newspaper plays a vital role in that. And while we love to be able to perform this role and take pride in putting the paper together, I think it
is important to remind everyone that it is thanks to the businesses that advertise in our paper each week that we are able to continue offering this service. In these tougher economic times it is tempting to drive out of the area to go to a bigger retailer who can provide us with wider choice – but when we do that we take just a little bit more away from our own community. If we want businesses to be here when it is convenient for us – then we need to continue supporting them now so they can survive in the long term. Regards,

What a Drive!
When golfers line up for tee off in next month’s Chaplaincy Golf Classic at Beerwah Golf Course, there will be a whole lot more than the coveted hole in one at stake. The major annual fundraiser for the local Chaplaincy Committee, organisers are hoping at least 20 teams will sign up for this year’s event, which kicks off from 11.00am on Sunday, July 15. With the Westpac Perpetual Trophy up for grabs, there’s a ‘hole’ lot of pressure on local businesses this year, with a new team challenge set to pit colleague against colleague, and business against business, as teams go head to head. If you can hit a ball with a stick, keen golfer or not, you’ve got what it takes to be part of this year’s event, according to Beerwah State High’s well known chappy, Mike Turner. “Not all teams will be in there, eyeing off the Westpac Trophy,” he said. According to Mike, there will also be a fair bit of competition for the other big prize of the day, the Wooden Spoon award, plus heaps of other novelty events. Event coordinator Warwick Moody said this year the focus was on encouraging local businesses to get involved by nominating a team. “Not only is this a great team building exercise, it’s a great way to help raise funds for our invaluable Chaplaincy service, which we hope to soon be able to roll out to other schools in the local area,” he said.

Mike Turner ready to 'tee off' for chaplaincy Warwick said it wasn’t too late to support the event through the donation of prizes. “We’re always looking for more sponsors too, so whether you want to get involved as a player or to donate a prize, we are keen to get as many people on board, to make this year’s event our best yet,” he said. Nominations are $55.00 per player for teams of four, and close next Friday, July 6. For more information or to nominate a team, contact Warwick on 5494 9351. So local businesses put a team together to be part of, and register and pay before June 30, and beat the taxman while you’re at it.

As reported in GCNews on June 6, the iconic club at Glenview went into liquidation as a result of racking up large debts to a range of local and other businesses. The cut-off date for expression of interest offers to purchase the property is June 28 and the sale will include almost 8,000sq.m of land, a club house, maintenance shed, a suspended liquor licence, 20 gaming authorities and an assortment of equipment. A representative of McGees Property who is marketing the property said that the liquidation and sale process has been running well. “We’re happy with the progress which is all heading towards the June 28 deadline,” he said. Rumours have been running wild locally as to who may or may not be interested in taking over the club. Sources connected with the club have suggested that there may be three major players showing an interest, and that due to this level of interest, the sale may end up going to auction to realise the greatest value from the sale. It’s also been suggested that one of the largest property development groups on the coast – Juniper Developments – is one of those parties. When put to the Juniper Group, they denied any interest in the Mooloolah Valley Sports Club, with a company representative stating that their interests are currently confined to developments on the Gold Coast.

The future of the Club may be a little hazy, but at least it seems to have more chance to get up and going than the much talked about tavern for Mooloolah township. The earlier efforts to have a tavern built at Mooloolah have created some division in the township, with Council rejecting the development twice – the most recent being in 2008. The proposal for a tavern and eight-room motel was rejected on the grounds that it was outside the Caloundra City Plan combined with the uncertainty of the future rail corridor alignment. Councillor for Division 1, Jenny McKay said that she was unaware of any attempts to restart the tavern development. “The reinvigoration of business in Mooloolah, including the proposal for a tavern development, will be part of the discussions around the new town planning scheme,” she said.

Our changing face
A quick snapshot of Glass House Country
The changing face of Queensland has been revealed with the release of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) first results of the 2011 Census of Population and Housing. The results show that the new Census resident population of Queensland is 4,332,739, up from 3,904,530 in 2006 – an increase of 11 per cent. The data also shows that the local government area with the biggest growth in Queensland is Brisbane, which now has 1,041,842 people up from 956,130 in 2006 – a rise of nine per cent. Housing in the State has also seen some significant changes over the past five years with median household weekly rents up to $300.00 from $200.00 in 2006, an increase of 50 per cent. This compares to the national average of $285.00 which was an increase of 49.2 per cent. Median monthly household mortgage repayments also increased to $1,850 from $1,300 in 2006, an increase of 42.3 per cent. This compares to the national average of $1,800 which increased by 38.5 per cent. Census data is used to help determine the allocation of GST funding to our State, and to plan vital services and infrastructure for the people of Queensland. This includes things such as hospitals and health services, schools, and public transport.

Local farming opportunity New members the lifeblood for iconic group Last month GCNews reported that Gowinta Farms, one of the region’s largest primary producers, had gone into voluntarily administration. At the time, Gowinta Farms director Len Smith said they were working towards a positive solution. “We are determined to work with their financier to strive through this tough economic barrier before us. “We endeavour to remain a strong agricultural presence in the Beerwah area to help with the growth that is sorely needed for the rest of the town’s business sector,” said Len. A major step in the restructure and rebuilding process is the sale of some of Gowinta’s prime farming lands on Morrison Road and Pikes Road, Glass House Mountains. The sale of the three pineapple farms located at 38 Morrison Road, 45 Morrison Road and 60 Pikes Road will see the Gowinta estate reduced by almost 42 hectares (105 acres). The Administrators - Robert Moodie and Andrew Barnden from Rodgers Reidy Chartered Accountants – have been granted an extension of time before convening a second creditors meeting to decide the fate of the company. The Federal Court approved extension will allow the Administrators more time to prepare a report into the state of the business and an opinion as to the future of the company. According to correspondence from Rodgers and Reidy to creditors, this second meeting is likely to be held on or around July 19. By which time, it will be known what price has been achieved for the sale of the three farming blocks and whether this is enough to satisfy the Administrators and the creditors.
One of the hinterland’s oldest community organisations, the Beerwah CWA, is in jeopardy of folding if it can’t urgently attract new members. On the eve of the organisation’s 90th anniversary in Queensland, membership of the Beerwah CWA, which has been serving the local community for more than 60 years, is so low that the group is no longer able to continue to operate. The Beerwah CWA started up in 1947 when their premises in Simpson Street, Beerwah, was built, and has a long tradition of actively supporting many local causes and raising thousands of dollars through a variety of fundraising projects. One of their many annual fundraisers, providing the sweet stall at the annual Beerwah Charity Sports, was canned in recent years due to the dwindling membership, and their iconic street stalls are also a thing of the past. With only two active members, President Donna Kay Donovan said it was becoming increasingly difficult for the branch to continue its many and varied activities in the local community. “One of our main aims is to fundraise for worthy causes, but there’s no way we can do that with only two active members,” Donna Kay said.
CWA president Donna Kay reflects on the rich history of the group
But she said the CWA was also much more than just fundraising. “It’s a great way to make new friends, catch up and socialise, and help out in the local community,” Donna Kay said. “It’s not just about cooking and craft. The CWA is one of the largest female organisations in the state, and the opportunities to make a difference are endless,” she said. All women over the age of 16, including mums with young children, are welcome to join the group, which meets on the first Tuesday of each month at 1.00pm. Current secretary Del Davis joined the CWA in 1959, with three young children in tow. Today, at 79 years of age, she said it was vital that new members came on board to share ideas and lead the organisation into the future. “At my age, I am ready to take a step back, but have been reluctant to do so until we can get a few more members on board to keep it going,” she said. If you are interested in learning more about what the CWA can offer, come along to their next meeting on Tuesday, July 3 at 1.00pm at the CWA Hall in Simpson Street, or give Donna Kay a call on 5439 9606 or 0407 903 119. The CWA premises is also available for hire by local community groups, at very affordable prices. For all booking enquiries, contact Beerwah Flowers and Gifts on 5494 6755. Keep an eye out for the new QCWA cookbook which is about to hit the shelves of retailers in Queensland. Full of traditional and much loved recipes, it’s the home chef’s bible! More details in coming weeks.

Best friends, pets and their people Local Photographer Kathy Hill of Whisper Images in Peachester is raising funds for the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge (SCAR) and looking for animal lovers to take part in the Sunshine Coast edition of ‘Best Friends, pets and their people’. Kathy, together with Willow Smith of Concept Images in Nambour have joined an expanding list of some of Australia's top portrait photographers to produce an emotive, fun and entertaining coffee table book containing images of pets and their human owners.
Whisper Images and Concept Images will be busy photographing on the streets, parks, beaches and in the studio, creating images that reflect the personalities and lifestyle of your family and pet. “This project is a great opportunity for people to have some amazing portraits taken of themselves and their pets to treasure forever. The coffee table book is a beautiful book and also makes a lovely gift!” says Kathy. ‘Best Friends, pets and their people’ is open to anyone on the Sunshine Coast. People taking part will have a personally tailored photography session and will be encouraged to include elements that reflect their family and pets interests.
The studio’s usual session fee has been waived and replaced with a special ‘Best Friends’ participation fee of $75.00. The participation fee includes a designer portrait photography session and guarantees one or more images will be included in the book. The proceeds of the participation fee will in turn be donated to the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge. Photography for the book has commenced and the project will culminate with the publishing of ‘Best Friends, pets and their people’ which will feature all pets and their people photographed in the coming months. “It will be available in time for Christmas. The ultimate gift and something to be treasured for many years,” says Kathy. To become involved please call Kathy Hill on 5494 9555 or 0409 049 074. Super Strawberry competition to start soon
The Glasshouse Country Super Strawberry Competition is on again for 2012, with the first round closing on Friday, July 6. As in previous years there will be eight rounds, with each weekly winner receiving a six-pack from the Beerwah Hotel. Growers should present entries at Coochin Creek Co-op for weigh-in and display before 5.00pm on Friday – please ask for David. Over the years this competition has inspired enthusiastic competition and impressive entries, the all-time champion weighing in at 245 grams (Shane Frizzo, 2006). In 2011 the winning fruit was grown by Paradise Fruits, and weighed 210 grams. The Super Strawberry Competition runs in conjunction with the Beerwah Charity Sports and Spring Carnival, annual community fund-raiser for Cancer Council Qld. The 2012 Champion will be announced at the sports day on Saturday, August 25 at Beerwah Sports Ground. The carnival held recently was a fun, active day where students competed in track and field events to earn points for their sports houses and to collect ribbons. The competition included running, long jump, high jump, shot put, and discus plus some novelty events for the younger years. Team spirit was high and everyone got in and had a go to support their House. Parents, spectators and students cheered on participants and witnessed some great sporting achievements. Thank you to everyone who helped make the day a success, especially Health and PE teacher, Miss Duffield who organised the event.

Children love an excuse to dress up and at Glasshouse Country Christian College they had the perfect reason to go a little crazy on the last day of term. The College uses the free dress day to raise funds and awareness for charities and each section of the school has a different charity they are supporting. The Primary section focussed on crazy hair and socks for the fun of it and raised money for a little Christian school in the highlands of Papua New Guinea. Previous GCCC staff member Lyn Shirley runs the school and receives no government support. The funds raised by students will purchase nails so a Year 6 classroom can be built.
After a long day of competition, the overall winner was announced. Congratulations to Burgess who were the shield winners for 2012. Prep student Oscar Holden In a very close second doing long jump place was Flinders and third place went to Petrie. The best athletes in each age category were also recognised. Good luck to those students who will be continuing on to district athletics where they will represent their school. We know you will do Landsborough proud. GCCC Middle School students toned down the craziness and just went free dress. Their gold coin donation is going towards purchasing a specialised wheelchair for a young Caloundra child who has cerebral palsy. Senior students are sending their donation to the Muravah Foundation which helps disadvantaged young people in the Philippines complete a university degree so they can break the poverty cycle in their family and the wider community. Staff used the day to break out of their black and white uniforms and raise funds to help fellow teacher Cathy Richardson. Cathy’s son was diagnosed with an aggressive bone cancer earlier in the year and the funds raised will help go toward the sometimes overlooked expenses such as car parking fees at hospital.

Block Exams - ‘You’ll be fine!’ Today I would like to share the emotional rollercoaster of high school block exams. Block exams is a period of about five days which is entirely made of exams; students are only required to be at school for their exams during this time. Now the effects of block exams start weeks before they actually occur when we receive the scheduled timetable - it is at this point that we realise ‘hey I don’t have to come to school on this day!’ and grumble a bit about how many exams there are but everything is generally fine. The teachers constantly inform us of how easy the exam / test / assessment piece is, we know everything we’ll need to (if we revise) and how much faith they have in us. Oh, how we believe them, after all why would dear, sweet Miss/Sir lie! The days before: ‘I am so ready for my first test. I’ve done the revision. I know what I have to do, nothing to stress about’.
Day 1: ‘I was so not ready for that test’. Inevitably this leads to wallowing in self-pity, maybe even a nap, and avoiding the teacher of that subject for as long as possible. Day 2: ‘I should’ve revised instead of wallowing in self-pity’. By this point, sleeping and eating habits have become irregular. Day 3: ‘Yes! I aced that; I am the champion of the world!’ You bask in ecstasy and trail after the teacher of that subject, hounding them for your results. Day 4: ‘I should’ve revised instead of basking in ecstasy’… Social life, friends, going outside is now meaningless. Day 5: ‘Oh another test? Good thing I don’t feel things anymore’. The worst thing of all? When it’s all over and done with, you’re lost and have no idea what to do with all your free time. That’s high school block exams in a nut shell.
Story tellers visit Landsborough Kindy A great time was had when Nicola and Karen from the Beerwah Library visited Landsborough Community Kindergarten. They brought along puppets, a bubble maker and lots of great stories to tell. A big thank-you from all the kindy children!

When Heidi opened the doors to Eclectic Dreams in Landsborough 10 years ago, her main goal was to be able to conduct her business ethically, to treat others, including suppliers and customers, the same way she would expect to be treated. The mother of three, now grown, children and former nurse, who used to sell her own range of handmade children’s clothing at markets, said she saw a need in the local market for unique products that had been sourced ethically. “I know all of my suppliers, and I hand select everything that I stock in my shop, so it’s with confidence that I know I am conducting my business in an ethical manner,” she said. Heidi said the past three years had been the most difficult, particularly the last 12 months. “It’s only been through sheer tenacity that we’ve managed to survive.” “There have been a number of times when I’ve thought it’s just all too hard, and it’s only through the support of my family, friends and customers who’ve encouraged me to keep going despite the odds, that I am where I am today. “It’s the co-op you have when you are not having a co-op,” she said. “This year we’ve really gone back to basics. Over the years the business had gotten too big and unwieldy, so I’ve pulled everything back, and gone back to what I know best. “This also means I can be as creative and diverse with my products as I want, which is what my customers tell me they want,” she said. “I really, really appreciate the support of my customers; I couldn’t have done it without them.” Heidi said it means her business in turn can support the families of not only the staff who work for her, but the many other local and international suppliers of the products she stocks. “As a small business owner, it’s vitally important to me that I am able to give back to my community. “I’ve been on the other side and know what it’s like to try and fundraise, so I never, ever turn anyone away. “At the end of the day, it’s about having gratitude for everything we have in our lives. “I am thankful for a roof over my head, and that I can run a business that also supports others. “I don’t like to get caught up in negativity.” Eclectic Dreams is located at 3-5/1 Maleny Street, Landsborough, opposite the Museum, phone 5494 1244.

Take care when choosing puppies
I am writing to urge people to be careful when selecting a pet store for the purchase of a new puppy. Whilst I am sure a lot of stores have yours and the puppies best interest at heart they are not experts in breeding. We have unfortunately had two bad experiences with pet stores. The first time we bought a beautiful Bull Terrier crossed with an American Pit-bull. She was soft natured and gentle. As she grew, so her problems grew. She had a congenital abnormality in her throat which prevented large particles of food passing into her stomach. As a result she literally starved and became very aggressive when food was around. We initially thought she was just greedy, but soon discovered that she was throwing her food back up as soon as she had eaten it as it was constricting her breathing. She became so aggressive that she attacked my other two dogs for food and then attacked me as I was trying to prize them apart. Long and short of it was - we had to make the sad decision to have her put down. The second time, again we were stupid enough
to buy from a pet store, a gorgeous Bassett Hound boy. No issues or problems, until he hit the eight month mark. He started to limp so I took him to the vets. X-rays revealed yet another congenital abnormality. One of the bones in his front leg is growing faster than the other and this has resulted in the two bones being torn apart. He now is in pain and limps. He is on weekly injections to try and lubricate the area and hopefully the other bone will ‘catch’ up. Our other alternative is to have him put down, or pay over $8,000 for a specialist to put pins etc in. Money we don’t have – plus it may not work. When I called the pet store to tell them his problem, they were unsympathetic and did not care. They claimed that the ‘breeders’ have bred successfully four previous times with no problems, and its hard luck. No compensation, good will gesture – nothing. So please, if you want a puppy, go to a reputable breeder who can show certificates, show you the parents and give you peace of mind. It may be a little bit more expensive, but my ‘cheaper’ dog still cost over $900.00! Kerstin Shepherd Beerwah
Food for thought
A query recently from the Landsborough Area Community Association to Council relating to who is responsible for the mowing of footpaths outside residences has raised some interesting issues. Council says the resident is responsible for the mowing and is also responsible for public liability insurance through their house insurance. Council officers were not willing to put this in writing and when asked to look, no by-law was found. This raises the following issues: • When contacted, the house insurance provider said the footpath was not included in house insurance.
From Andrew Powell
• Ride-ons can’t be used on a footpath unless registered for road use. • If the footpath is the council responsibility and the resident mows the grass, who is responsible for the safety of the person mowing? Who checks the equipment and ensures protective clothing and hazard warning signs are used? Who pays for the fuel? • As more pathways are introduced, grass cutting will be an increasing problem. At the moment most of us cut the grass on the footpath outside our properties but how many people are aware that we are doing it without insurance cover? It’s probably only a matter of time before someone has an accident and then finds no-one is willing to take responsibility for the insurance claim. • Is it time that council has a proper policy relating to this issue? K.Leitch (Secretary) Landsborough Area Community Association Inc.
Thanks Glasshouse Country
Since the article in Glasshouse Country News regarding my horses, I have had many residents approach me offering help and appreciation for the way I look after my horses. When I did the article, I did not ask for, nor did I expect such response. To all the people I have referred to, please accept my appreciation to all that you have done to assist. It is pleasing indeed to reside in an area such as this where people are so kind and willing to offer help. Good on you Glass House residents. Max Chapman Rocky, Scouldie and Mandrake

News from Parliament
Working with Main Roads to find solutions
The first two official sitting weeks of Parliament saw the introduction of new legislation including the Environmental Protection (Greentape Reduction) and other Legislation Amendment Bill which I was honoured to introduce to the House. World Environment Day was also celebrated during the first week of June with the announcement of the Everyone's Environment grants. These grants are designed to support community groups who want to take action to improve their local environment. This program covers a wide range of environment initiatives including tree planting, land restoration and community and waterway clean-ups. The grants are available from July 1 and more information can be found online at www.ehp.qld.gov.au For anyone wanting to see transcripts from Parliament or if you would like to read speeches made by Members of Parliament, including the Maiden Speeches made by our newest members, I encourage you to visit www.parliament.qld.gov.au. You can also stream live coverage of Parliament when we are in session from this website.
I recently met with a representative from the Department of Transport and Main Roads for the North Coast region, and discussed two issues covering Beerwah and Landsborough. The first was to talk about the confusing signage in and around Beerwah. Ursula Starkovsky and Kel MacNamara from the Glasshouse Chamber of Commerce also joined us. I should point out they provided a very comprehensive and detailed report outlining their concerns and possible solutions. They brought up very valid points, which included changing some of the existing signs to make it easier for locals to identify the town centre and also for tourists driving along Steve Irwin Way who may want to travel through Beerwah to get to Peachester. The next meeting was held at Landsborough Railway Station where Jason Coultis and members of the Landsborough Community Association discussed the ongoing traffic congestion around the station. Unfortunately this situation is ongoing, with Landsborough one of the busiest railway stations for this end of the Coast. While the railway did undergo an expansion a few years back, there are still not enough car parks for commuters to use, and therefore they park in the surrounding streets, which has a negative impact on local businesses. These matters will continue to be pursued.

Mercury goes retrograde …
The Full Moon falls in Capricorn on Wednesday, July 4. There is excitement yet also tension at this Full Moon, especially around relationships and possible deception - deep emotions are likely to be stirred and secrets may come to light. This Full Moon brings the difference between public and private life into sharp focus and invites us to find a balance between these two opposing polarities. If there is something you have been working towards for a while, things are likely to come to fruition now with a sense of achievement. Uranus goes retrograde on Friday, July 13 at 8 degrees Aries, intensifying the tension of the current Uranus-Pluto square. This is an opportunity to review your life from a perspective of heightened awareness, and revisit any insights you may have experienced over the last seven months around being truer to yourself and more authentic.

Blood donors needed to boost low stocks Mercury goes retrograde on Sunday, July 15 for three weeks, bringing the potential for confusion, mistakes and delays. This is not a good time to make any major purchases or sign contracts, unless you’re prepared to revise your plans (or take purchases back to the shop) down the track – resist especially the temptation to make lavish and extravagant purchases at this time, as Mercury is retro in Leo. It is however a great time to catch up on all your paperwork, and reorganise so you can be more streamlined. The New Moon in Cancer on Thursday, July 19, represents the beginning of a new cycle in relation to the feminine. Cancer is ruled by the Moon, representing women, mothering and the sacred feminine. This New Moon represents the beginning of a new cycle in the way we care for others, the way we nurture ourselves, and our relationship with women in general. The theme of our 9th birthday celebrations was ‘Feline, feminine fur and fun’ and the majority of nearly 90 attendees came in costume for the day. We were treated to a superb roast lunch followed by feline, feminine and fun cakes. Amongst the entertainment was Catherine Fox, winner of the Sunshine Coast Seniors Superstar competition, and Kenny and Denise Bennett, comedians extraordinaire. This was a great day, full of fun, prizes, raffles and an absolutely bumper trading table which, together with door receipts and raffles, provided a record contribution to our charity. The next View Club outing on Wednesday, July 4 will be a ‘Soup, Chick and Flick’ day to be held in the Sunstone Gardens Country Club in Maleny, starting at 10.00am. Morning tea, a film and a soup lunch will all be provided. Anyone requiring a lift please meet at Beerwah library at 9.30am. Our club is a non-profit friendship club that supports the Smith Family chiefly through the Foundation’s Learning for Life program for disadvantaged students. The Smith Family is a national, independent children’s charity helping disadvantaged Australian children to get the most out of their education, so they can create better futures for themselves. Anyone who would like to join the View Club would be most welcome. Please contact Joy on 5439 9049 or Lydia on 5438 7894 who will be pleased to supply any further information about the club. You can check out the View Club on its website http://view.org.au See photos on page 15.
Upper Coochin Creek Environmental Reserve Contributed by Roger Callen Eight of us met under the able guidance of Rhonda Martin from council's community services unit and removed a large amount of lantana and other weeds from near the rockholes on Coochin Creek, behind Caralan Park 2. We also removed rubbish from here and the shelter at the end of Peppertree Way. Council provided morning tea and equipment and some excellent shirts and hats! Some of us recently met with Alan Wyn from Land for Wildlife to discuss weed issues in the Beerwah State High School woodland, and with council waterways staff to discuss water pollution issues. We also joined with Mooloola Waterwatch and Landcare to meet our impressive and approachable new councillor, Rick Baberowski. Current work meeting place is the Coochin Creek rockholes (cascades). Enter via Emma Place or Hickory Drive, Beerwah. Come and join us on July 20. 14 |

View club celebrates nine years Last week the Glasshouse View Club celebrated their ninth birthday with a themed party at the Glasshouse Mountain Sports Club. Members and their guests embraced the theme and put plenty of effort into their outfits with lots of very cute ears and tails on show. It definitely seemed that the felines were on their best behaviour as no cat fights or catty incidents were reported.

Peachester History Committee
Celebration at the Cemetery Contributed by Helen Page
On Sunday, July 1, members of the Peachester History Committee, together with friends and descendants of other pioneer families, will gather at the Peachester Cemetery to celebrate the completion of projects which will enhance the heritage value of the cemetery. During 2012 the cemetery has been the focus of several tasks undertaken by members of the Committee with two separate funding grants. The Community Memorials Restoration Program run by the State Government provides funding on a dollar for dollar basis ‘to assist communities to undertake minor works that result in the repair and restoration of recognised valuable social property.’ A grant through this program has allowed us to restore two of the older graves, and also to build an archway and sign over the stairs leading to the lower terrace so that visitors can be directed to the memorial wall where pioneer and military memorial plaques are displayed. The graves in question date from the early 1900s, and are significant as the last resting place of early district pioneers Thomas and Rose Dwyer (died 1914 and 1921), and Maria and Charles Butler (died 1911 and 1914). Both graves have been restored, a picket fence around the Dwyer grave rebuilt with new timber reproducing the original design, and the wrought iron fence enclosing the Butler graves cleaned and treated following conservation advice.
The grave as it is now, rebuilt by Wally Alongside these activities another longplanned project has finally been brought to fruition in partnership with the Sunshine Coast Council, and we thank former Councillor Anna Grosskreutz for her assistance in securing the necessary funding. Plaques are being placed on 39 previously unmarked graves, extensive research by members over several years making it possible to include the name, date of death, and in the majority of cases date of birth on these plaques. History Committee members feel that the new plaques will provide an important resource helping descendants of many families to access family history information. Interested community members are invited to join Peachester History Committee members at the cemetery from 11.00am on Sunday, July 1 for a short ceremony, followed by a shared lunch at the Peachester Hall. Dine In
with Lea Parkes
Stop in 4 a coffee and a gossip After being open seven days a week for nearly five years, Just 4 Gossip at Landsborough shut its doors for four days recently for a major transformation. And their loyal customers made sure business owner Barbara Allen knew that they were not happy – not happy at all at being denied their favourite coffee hot spot – for four whole days and they made it quite clear they don’t want to suffer that injustice again! With parking right outside the cafe and being right across the road from the Landsborough Railway Station, they are a very convenient location for commuters and business people to grab a quick coffee and snack to go. But for those who make the time to pop in for morning or afternoon tea, or a light meal during
JUST
the day, they also have the added benefit of offering a bit of retail therapy. Barbara has put together a great range of gorgeous gift items, homewares, fashion accessories and jewellery items, which are popular – in particular the beautiful gifts for new ‘babies’ which are not always easy to find locally. If you ask Barbara what she thinks brings the customers back time and time again she reckons the great coffee and friendly service they offer makes their customers happy. While I was there, I spoke to a lovely Glass House Mountains local and asked why she was there and in her words - they make a lovely coffee - nice and strong and my husband really likes their Vienna Coffees and the staff are always very nice.
After spending time at the cafe taking photos during a lunch hour rush recently, I can see what she meant. Both Barbara and Brian who was working that day were really warm and chatty with the customers – which definitely creates the right atmosphere for people to come in with their friends, enjoy the coffee and have a gossip! Just 4 gossip is located at 3/40 Cribb Street, Landsborough and opens everyday at 7.00am and closes at 4.00pm Monday – Friday and 3.00pm on Saturday and Sunday.
We may now be a little smaller in size, but we still offer friendly, attentive service in comfortable surroundings

Chris Johnson Glasshouse Country Baptist Church The other day I sincerely believed I had a terminal illness. The tests came back negative and so we were waiting for more significant test results. I was convinced my time was up. But I am happy to report it was just a virus. Never was I more sincerely wrong. There is a book in the bible which dates from around 1300 BC called Judges. It is one of my favorite books because its one of the least likely books you would expect in the bible. Basically it is how the nation of Israel went spiraling downward because it had forgotten to consult God in how they should live. There is a refrain repeated a number of times in the book that everyone did what was right in their own eyes. The book concludes with a pack rape, a cut up mistress, civil war, intrigue and kidnappings. And the reader is left to ask how could it go wrong so quickly? The books’ answer is that people were doing what they thought was right in their own eyes. I think the point the Bible story is making is that sometimes, just like those ancient people, we can do something which we genuinely think is the

right thing to do, but because it goes against what God says, it will only bring us pain. I see this principal at work time and time again in people’s lives - we think something is the right thing to do (even though we know it goes against the bible) but inevitably it comes back to bite us. There is another verse which says that our hearts are deceitfully wicked - in other words we fool ourselves into thinking that what is right is wrong and what is wrong is right. The point the bible is making is that we can be genuine and sincere but still get it wrong simply because we have ignored God’s instructions. I wonder if our culture is doing the same thing at the moment? Many people sincerely believe what they are pushing is right but I wonder, since it goes against what God says, what the consequences are going to be for our society? We can believe we have it right and yet still be wrong.

Chamber have given this financial year the big kiss off By Lea Parkes
The Glass House Country Chamber of Commerce used their recent networking evening at LattE Da Café and Gifts at Landsborough to ‘Kiss the 2011/2012 Financial Year Goodbye’. Chamber President Patty Shaw said this last financial year had been really tough for many of their small business members and they thought it was definitely time to look to the future with the ‘glass half full’ approach. “Clearly the theme struck a chord with many members and guests, with around 45 local business people coming along and sharing in the evening,” Patty said. “A highlight for the evening was a panel discussion by our local financial and property experts which allowed them to share some tips for those attending to consider before the end of the financial year. “Thanks to Michelle Christopher – Blockland from Hinterland Accounting Services, Ursula Starkovski from Beerwah First National Real Estate, Carol Kenny Business Banker with Commonwealth Bank and Jens Staermose from WD Hall Accounting for being our experts on the panel. Carol Kenny, Business Banker with Commonwealth Bank said there seemed to
have been a bit more confidence in our local economy with an increase in activity in the housing and business sectors in the area over the last couple of months. Ursula Starkovsky, of Beerwah First National Real Estate said she was pleased that the Premier was honouring his promise and that from July, stamp duty would be reduced to previous rates, thus saving home buyers heaps. “Very clearly, issuing and signing contracts has slowed down during the past few weeks in anticipation of a better deal by the Government. Thank you Premier; this will certainly help to kick-start the property market,” Ursula said. Patty said she would also like to thank the sponsors of the night, Jens Staermose from WD Hall Accounting and Gengiz and Cheney Simsir of GHM Services. “Through their generosity we are able to bring events such as this one to the local business community at no cost, which in this current economic times is really important,” Patty said. “If you are in business and haven’t become a member and are interested in attending Chamber networking events, please email info@glasshousemountains.com.au and you can be added to the email list for alerting you to upcoming events.”

TAX TIME
2011 / 2012
Your tax questions answered By Jens Staermose
When do I have to lodge my 2011 tax return?
If you prepare and lodge your own tax return, you must lodge it by October 31, 2012. If you are using a registered tax agent, the tax agent has other deadlines, in most cases up to May 15, 2013. However, if you are using a tax agent for the first time, or you are going to use a different tax agent this year, you must contact them by October 31, 2012.
Do I need receipts to claim deductions for work-related expenses? You can claim up to a total of $300.00 of work-related expenses without the need to have written receipts. Once your claim exceeds $300.00 you must have receipts for the full amount. The expenses you claim must be related to your income and not be for private purposes. The expenses must have been paid for between July 1, 2011 and June 30, 2012. It's risky to fudge the dates! If your employer reimbursed you for your workrelated expenses, you can’t claim the expenses in
$
your tax return. You have already got your money back!
for more information on what you can claim and can’t claim. You can also ask the writer.
I donated to several charities last year. Can I claim a tax deduction?
I have a rental property. What can I claim?
To claim a tax deduction for your gift or donation, the organisation you donated to must be registered as a deductible gift recipient. Art Union tickets do not qualify as a tax deduction!
The basic answer is that you can claim all expenses incurred in connection with the rental property. Each year the ATO publishes a Guide for Rental Property Owners. This guide details what you can claim and can’t claim. You can download the guide from the ATO’s website, www.ato.gov.au. A major point: If the construction of your rental property commenced after 18 July 1985, you may be able to claim depreciation of the original construction cost of the building. Ask your accountant!
Am I on the Australian Taxation Office Hit List? Each year the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) targets specific trades and professions. Last year the ATO targeted earthmovers, flight attendants, carpenters and real estate agents. According the ATO these people have a higher risk of getting their work-related expenses claims wrong: Insufficient or incorrect documentation for motor vehicle expense claims, travel expenses, home office expenses, internet expenses and mobile phone expenses. Each year, usually around this time, the ATO writes to over one hundred thousand of taxpayers working in the targeted occupations to tell them about the new tax guide for these particular occupations. No matter what trade or profession you are in, the ATO are monitoring the claims made by people in your trade or profession. You can go to the ATO’s website www.ato.gov.au

Can I still claim the Education Refund?
The short answer is NO. Instead Education Tax Refund will be replaced by Schoolkids Bonus. The Australian Government will pay each eligible family a fixed amount, $410.00 for each primary school student and $820.00 for each secondary school student. To be eligible, the family must not only be eligible to receive Family Tax Benefit (FTB) Part A, but the family must actually receive the FBT Part A. No paperwork is required, i.e. eligible recipients will no longer be required to keep a record of eligible child education expenses.

How do I prepare and lodge my tax return? For most people the preparation of income tax returns has not become easier over the years, but the ATO is providing e-tax, which enables tax payers to prepare and lodge their tax return electronically. Most taxpayers still go to an accountant or tax agent to ensure the return is prepared correctly and claims are maximised. If you expect a refund, many tax agents offer to deduct their fee from the refund.
Have the tax rates changed?
Over recent years the income tax rates have changed: certain rates have been reduced slightly and certain thresholds were increased. The tax rates were unchanged from 2010/11 to 2011/12. However, from July 1 2012 the rates are changing, so that taxpayers with a taxable income of $18,200 pay no tax. The low income tax offset has also been changed from July 1 2012.
The following table shows a comparison of personal income tax for an adult individual taxpayer, including low income tax offset, but excluding Medicare Levy and surcharge Taxable Income ($)

You will also need the loan account
bank statement showing yearly interest paid if you are claiming any interest on a loan, and a list of additional expenses not paid through Real Estate Agency eg: Rates, Insurance, Electricity. These are just a few of the more usual documents required to prepare an individual tax return. If you own a business or are self employed you may also need to Carolyn Wheeler supply, books of account, Woodford Office computer backups etc. 1/116 Archer Street If you have any queries Phone: 5496 1156 regarding what you need to bring to your appointment, please do email: not hesitate to call us, we will be cwheeler@caliph.net.au more than happy to guide you with what information you will need to supply. www.gcnews.com.au

Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country
Glasshouse / Hinterland AFL Contributed by James (Jimbi) Haycroft
Glasshouse V Maroochydore 18s at Glasshouse June 16. Leading up to our match against Maroochydore we all knew it would be a tough game with Maroochydore having the advantage of selecting players from their first division side. Despite our highly disciplined and motivating warm up, the away team came out with all guns blazing to take an early advantage; our defence stood strong, thanks to the exceptional work of our entire backline whose instinct and skill continued to repel the opposition time and again. Individual efforts from Jacko, Brad, and Shane created fantastic opportunities for our midfielders to build upon. With help from a few quick fire goals from Sonny and Mitch we managed to get back on top and take the lead into the first break. The second quarter began with both team trading goals as we maintained our narrow advantage. As the arm wrestle continued, more team mates displayed individual brilliance to wrestle the game further into our favour. Ryan once again showed why he is one of the stand-out players in
the side, with his destructive runs from the back line and penetrating kicks into the forwards, the game soon seemed to be firmly in our grasp. The third quarter saw the entire team rise to the occasion on the back of our early form, linking up well with handballs, and running in numbers put Maroochydore on the back foot. Maintaining our forward pressure kept Maroochydore locked in their back half limiting any potential scoring opportunities. Heading into the final break, spirits were high and the boys could almost taste a win. However as our previous track record shows, our fourth quarter tends to be our achilles heel. To our credit we carried our good form into the final term persevering to overcome any resistance Maroochydore had to offer, running out the contest in punishing fashion. We are now clear leaders on the ladder after this hard fought win, and full credit has to be given to Steve whose leadership and coaching kept us on track throughout the entire game. Let’s carry this good form into the next round boys, up the dogs! Lions 14.17.101 Def. Roos 10.7.67

Tohm's A-Z of Gardening I is for Indigofera Apart from wearing your old ones while gardening, what do blue jeans and the plant genus Indigofera have in common? One species of this genus, Indigofera tinctoria was the most common source of indigo dye up to the end of the 19th century. Since then, synthetic dyes have dominated the market. There are about 700 species of Indigofera found throughout the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world, many of which are native to Australia. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from ground hugging perennials to small trees. A characteristic of the Fabaceae (pea) family is their ability to fix nitrogen. This means that they convert nitrogen from the air into a form plants can use as a nutrient source. There are many Indigofera species used for this purpose in agriculture throughout the world. Indigofera australis is found throughout most of Southern Australia and up the east coast to North Queensland. It is an attractive, open shrub to about 2m tall, often found in Eucalypt forests and areas of dappled shade. In the garden, it provides a soft backdrop to larger garden beds and a floral display throughout spring. Native Indigofera are a food source for many insects such as wasps and bees. The caterpillars of many native butterflies feed on the leaves. The most commonly cultivated species in the domestic garden is Indigofera decora or Summer Wisteria. This is a scrambling shrub to about 60 cm high. The plant spreads by vigorous suckers and will colonise bare patches between other shrubs.

While some may consider this to be a problem, I find it a great way to fill in the gaps, especially in a young garden bed. As the main plants grow and block out the light, the Summer Wisteria will die off or be marginalised, where it will create the look of a soft ruffle around the garden bed. The pink flowers which can appear, on and off, throughout summer never fail to attract comments from visitors. As the weather cools off, the leaves fall. The leafless stems are unsightly, so cutting them back will tidy up the garden. This will not impede the future growth and flowering in any way. Summer Wisteria is a hardy plant and is quite adaptable to most soils except very sandy soils. It loves a good dose of organic matter, so don’t hold back on the compost. Summer Wisteria is not often sold in nurseries. A woody sucker from a friend’s garden would suffice to get this plant established in your garden. Look around for the white form. It is not so common but equally beautiful.
Council lights up for bushfire prevention Council is about to begin its annual program of controlled prescribed burns prior to the start of the peak bushfire season from September to November. Local Disaster Group Chair Cr Tim Dwyer said council will conduct approximately 12 controlled burns at specific sites across the Sunshine Coast over the next two months. “The aim of these burns is to reduce the volume of forest fuels and to create a mosaic pattern of burnt and unburnt areas within these parks and bushlands. “Doing this will help reduce the intensity of any subsequent wildfires if they were to occur and reduce the risk to Sunshine Coast residents and properties.”
