Hi Everyone

L

ast year the local ABC radio station got behind the Kids in Care appeal and I remembered thinking at the time what a great initiative it was to provide Christmas gifts for Queensland children and young people who live in foster, kinship or residential care. My parents have long since passed away, but I know how fortunate it is to have great memories of the family on Christmas morning, sitting on the lounge room floor, madly ripping wrapping paper off and checking out my presents. We might not have always had the most expensive gifts, but there was always plenty of thought put into them,

Mobile phone black spot meeting Member for Fisher Mal Brough has invited Glasshouse Country residents to rally together and put their case for Federal funding to improve phone coverage. During the election, the Coalition pledged $100 million to help improve coverage. Following on from that commitment, Communications Minister Malcolm Turnbull’s Parliamentary Secretary Paul Fletcher will be available to visit communities in the New Year, to hear directly from locals. “The Coalition is making good on its promise to regional areas,” Mr Brough said. “And the Minister has made the Parliamentary Secretary available to us, but I need to confirm that locals are keen to meet with him to discuss their specific concerns.

“We can’t undo years of neglect overnight, but this $100 million is a step in the right direction. Importantly, it will also act as a springboard for further investment by telecommunication companies. “If you experience difficulties with your mobile reception that you would like to put directly to the Parliamentary Secretary then I need to hear from you.” If there is sufficient local interest Mr Brough said he would convene a local meeting in the new year and invite Mr Fletcher to attend so he could hear directly from the community. To register your interest in attending please phone the Fisher electorate office on 5444 4888 or email cameron.outridge@aph.gov.au.

Our little princes

Many new parents think their babies are little princesses or princes and for local couple Gabby and Grant Townsend, their twins have something significant in common with Prince George, the newest member of England’s Royal family. They share their birth date with His Royal Highness the Prince of Cambridge and to celebrate this important event they have received personally engraved commemorative medallions.

World champion to share skills with locals Earlier this year GCNews brought you the story about former Mooloolah local Laree Gadenne’s success in Hollywood where she claimed a gold medal in hip hop dance and seven silver medals competing against 50 other countries in the Performing Arts World Championships. Laree now lives in Sydney and is keen to share her talents with local Glasshouse Country children. On Saturday, December 7 she is running a hip hop / break dance workshop in the Landsborough Memorial Hall from 2.30pm. Children will be taught a fabulous routine and then perform for their parents. Laree teaches in schools and community based dance programs, runs dance workshops all over Sydney, plus she offers private children’s tuition. This is a wonderful opportunity for our local children to have a chance at being taught by a world champion. Cost of the workshop is $10.00 a child or $18.00 for a family of two, ages from six to 12. Both boys and girls love to get on the floor and learn the moves. To book your child’s spot please phone Rhonda on 0432 096 595. Laree will be back on the coast over the Christmas period and is available to perform at Christmas functions from December 20. Enquiries 0402 597 404.

Laree showing off her skills at the Performing Arts World Championships Laree is a great asset to any party or function with a dance performance, then gets party people up teaching dance moves, which is loads of fun. Also available will be Laree’s new dance DVD which is a great Xmas gift for children and adults to learn step by step dance moves in your own home, just $10.00.

Beerwah Urban Fire service under the pump The Beerwah Urban Fire Station is staffed by a dedicated band of part-time auxiliary fire fighters. Just like full-time fire fighters, they attend structural and environmental fires, road crashes, chemical spills and many other rescue situations. However, according to information provided to GCNews from a concerned member of the public, the station is now often left idle when local emergency situations occur. With the station requiring a full complement of 16 auxiliary fire fighters, the staffing level is now down to 11, with a number of those currently on-leave. It has been reported to us that this leaves the station without an adequate base of fire fighters to call upon, especially during weekdays and daylight hours. As a result, local emergency situations are being dealt with by the units from Caboolture or Caloundra, with the Beerwah appliance not able to attend. From the information received, it appears that unresolved staffing issues at the Beerwah station may have aggravated the situation, leaving some auxiliary fire fighters feeling left out in the cold by management. The unfortunate outcome is that the Glasshouse Country region may not be receiving the usual first-class standard of service which all residents pay for through the compulsory fire levy collected by Council.

By Greg Brown

“As to the auxiliary’s taking leave, the job can be a very demanding one, with officers having to deal with difficult and sometimes confronting situations. “We understand and respect the need for all staff to have a break away from the front line, and as I understand, they will all be returning to their duties at the end of their leave. Local Acting Inspector Dave Woods is very keen to encourage locals to think about becoming an auxiliary fire fighter.

But according to John Bolger, Acting Assistant Commissioner (North Coast Region) from Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES), the area is adequately covered during emergency situations. “There are currently enough auxiliary staff to form an operational crew when needed, but we can always do with a few more officers. “To this end, we are currently actively recruiting for new auxiliary fire fighters to join the ranks. “As many of the current auxiliary officers have day jobs – some of which may not be in the local area at the time of an emergency, there will always be issues with enough staff being able to respond within an adequate timeframe. “Consequently, crews from Caboolture and Caloundra are often the first to respond to callouts in the Beerwah region.

“Auxiliary fire fighters are unique, in that they are on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, holding regular jobs within our community, they carry a pager and ‘down tools’ when Queensland Fire and Emergency Services receive a 000 call. “Being an auxiliary fire fighter is exciting and rewarding. They enjoy the camaraderie of a close-knit team and most importantly have the opportunity to make a real and worthwhile contribution to their local community. Being a QFES auxiliary fire fighter is not a volunteer role. They are paid to attend when summoned as well as when they are participating in training. If you are interested in becoming an auxiliary fire fighter with the Beerwah station, you can contact Dave directly on 5420 7510 or 0418 889 590. To find out more, take a look at their website www.fire.qld.gov.au/employment/auxiliary.asp

Funding for Christian College

Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has announced Glasshouse Country Christian College will be allocated more than half-a-million dollars for major projects to be constructed at the school. The combined primary and secondary school at Beerwah successfully received the subsidies under the Queensland Government’s State Capital Assistance Scheme and External Infrastructure Subsidy Scheme, aimed at significantly easing the costs associated with projects at eligible non-state schools. Mr McArdle congratulated Glasshouse Country Christian College on the funding boost. “Glasshouse Country Christian College offers some great programs for students in the local area and I’m pleased they will now be able to expand their facilities,” Mr McArdle said. “This is a great win not only for the school, but for many families who are part of the school community.” As part of the subsidies, $475,000 has been allocated for the construction of three primary general learning areas, two withdrawal rooms, three store rooms, a staff room, amenities, covered area, site works, furniture and equipment, while $115,000 has been allocated for the construction of a car park and set down area. The approved subsidy amounts are the maximum amounts approved, and the actual amounts payable will be determined following confirmation of the final costs of the projects.

with Senior Sergeant Bruce Duck Crime Statistics There were eight burglaries of homes / business premises in the past month, down from 13 the previous month, of which two have been solved. There were also six vehicles that were entered and properties either stolen or removed of which three have been solved. This is down from 12 similar offences the previous month. The majority of these offences relate to the theft of number plates. If available to you, it is wise to park your vehicle in a secure location to prevent this type of offence occurring. Over the past months there have been a number of graffiti offences committed in the public toilets throughout the Beerwah and Landsborough divisions. This graffiti was sexually explicit and offensive to all who had the misfortune to view it. This type of behaviour also invokes the offence of making child exploitation material which is a serious offence. Due to information from the public and a concerted effort by the Detectives from the Caloundra CPIU and the local uniform staff a male suspect was identified and subsequently charged with in excess of 40 charges relating to these types of offences. This type of offence is abhorrent in nature and does nothing to promote the Glass House Mountains area as a safe and family friendly

Traffic The festive season and school holidays is fast approaching. Police from this area and the Road Policing Unit will be out in force attending to high visibility patrols and traffic enforcement operations in support of the ‘Anywhere – Anytime’ strategy and the annual Statewide Road Safety Campaign. We will be focusing on the Fatal Five which includes speeding, drink / drug driving, seatbelts, fatigue and distraction / inattention. There have been 248 road deaths this year. It is important to remember that these are not just statistics. They are someone’s father, mother, brother, sister, and loved ones. Police want everybody to get to their destination safely and to always exercise caution and care when travelling on our roads. The majority of motorists comply with the road rules and exercise responsible driving; however at this time of year extra attention needs to be applied when driving. Until next month keep safe, lock up and drive responsibly.

Sore neck and shoulders?

Are your sore neck and shoulders making life less enjoyable? Does sitting at the computer, driving, or even reading a book cause a burning discomfort in your shoulders that spreads up into the base of your skull? If so, you may be suffering from Spinal Subluxation and poor posture – 2 common problems that chiropractic care is very effective in relieving. Subluxation is the term chiropractors use to describe ‘dysfunctional’ vertebrae in the spine. This occurs when the spine loses normal motion and/or position, and can cause wear and tear on the discs, ligaments, muscles and other spinal tissues. Subluxation can also have an affect on the nerves exiting the spine – leading to even more issues of pain and poor health. Today’s lifestyle encourages us to fall into ‘forward head posture’ - where our head sits in front of our shoulders – rather than in line with the shoulders as it should. This forward posture has a significant impact on your health and your appearance and if left unaddressed, tends to get worse as you get older. Researchers agree that for every 2.5cm of forward head posture there is an equivalent increase of 4.5kg of stress on the neck. It’s no wonder poor posture is such a pain! Poor posture and Spinal Subluxation often result in back aches, neck pain, jaw pain, loss of lung capacity, gastrointestinal problems, pre-disposition to arm, shoulder and rotator cuff injuries and the list goes on. Fortunately, we can help! Call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today to find out if Spinal Subluxation is the cause of your discomfort. LOSING WEIGHT EASY AS Meal 3 Coaching 1 Exercise 2 Planning Just $17.95 a week * conditions apply

Curves Beerwah is proud to announce that a local Brisbane woman, who describes life before losing weight as ‘just an existence’, has been announced as Australia and New Zealand Curvette of the Year 2014. Tanya Jurgensen, who attends Curves Carina in Brisbane, has lost a staggering 68.3 kilos through Curves, including 32.1 kilos on Curves Complete. Prior to losing weight, Tanya weighed 180 kilos. The public humiliation of being so overweight drove her into a hermit-like state that led to more emotional eating. The catalyst for change was when her doctor delivered his prognosis. It was either gastric bypass surgery or the very real prospect of an early death. At the age of just 27, this was devastating news. Rapidly, she managed to lose some weight on her own, but found she was starting to plateau and move backwards. That’s when she turned to Curves. Starting on Curves Complete in October last year, Tanya lost 13 kilos in the first 12 weeks. She was hooked. She couldn’t believe the quantity and variety of food available through Curves Complete. The plan supported her busy corporate lifestyle, allowing her to take healthy snacks with her to functions and meetings. The one-on-one coaching was invaluable. These days, she feels her life has taken a 360 degree turn, thanks to Curves Complete. She is now using her story to motivate and inspire others in her club, her local community and the wider Curves community. Congratulations Tanya! Tanya Jurgensen

Women connecting and creating Christmas gifts from nature Local artist Rene Bahloo is leading a project to teach traditional and contemporary basketry skills using natural plants that grow in Sunshine Coast gardens. Christmas is a time for connecting with friends and family alike. For some though, the social networks are just not there to support this connection. To address this need, Rene, in conjunction with Nungeena Aboriginal Corporation for Women’s Business, with funding from the Sunshine Coast Council, is bringing the community together in a weaving project - a workshop series / retreat experience called ‘Expanding the Circle’. This refers to expanding and growing in circles of friendship and connection between women from the Sunshine Coast region. It also refers to the basic structure of most weaving techniques, the spiral shape. As the spiral moves outwards, so do we as women share from within to without, expanding in consciousness together as a group, sharing our lives and our experiences, while sitting together being creative. Women get to weave their hearts together; and their fibres too, through being connected in silence and sound, action and relaxation. Women will connect in an experience of active meditation. The purpose of these workshops is to bring a range of women of the community together, to spend time sharing, learning and connecting with each other, women that might not normally move

in the same circles. Another outcome is to bring awareness to the local environment (and our own gardens). What grows in your garden that can be used for weaving? Many things!

Imagine being able to create amazing Christmas gifts that don’t cost the earth! They don’t cost anything, in fact. Creations like garlic baskets, melon baskets, bracelets and armbands, lampshades, pendants and funky water bottle holders. All it takes is a little time, patience and attendance at one or more of Rene’s community workshops / retreat, coming up in December, to learn what and how to harvest, prepare and weave plants together in a variety of ways. Local plants like Piccabeen or Alexandra palm fronds and sheaths will be used, as well as banana stem, Philodendron leaf sheaths, Pandanus, leaves, Lomandra (mat rush), sedges, weed vines and bark fibre. In addition to the weaving component, there will be an evening component that includes song and rhythm with local songstress and educator Emma Creed. There will also be the opportunity to partake in a guided walk around Nungeena’s property at the foot of Mt Beerwah, with an Indigenous local cultural guide sharing stories of the land and its special significance for women. This experience will take place at Nungeena in Beerwah on December 12, and at Buderim / Eudlo on December 13 and 14. Lead-on events to the project will be at Rosebed Street Gallery in Eudlo on December 7 and 11. The workshops all run on a by-donation basis. For more information about the project / workshops / retreat event, call Rene Bahloo at 0438 162 552 or email her at weaverywork@gmail.com

Let’s say $3,700 is invested – expect $185 per year – if you are lucky (at 5% return on investment). If you purchased a solar system for $3,700 then you can categorically expect to receive a return of $518 even if you used NONE, yes NONE of the electricity it produced. That is a return of investment on 14%*. But if you use even only one half of the electricity you produced, you would get a return of $712 per year or a return of 19.2%*. The more electricity you use of what you have produced the greater is your return on investment. These figures are absolute facts. The truth is the return is probably higher. Call in to 1300 4 Solar and pick up a FACT SHEET which categorically proves and upholds these claims. Plan now to transfer your money from the bank to your roof for a real return on your money. *Current AGL export payment

The evening kicks off at 5.00pm with lots of treats for the younger crowd including an animal farm, Croc truck from Australia Zoo, and a jumping

castle. Dinner has been taken care of, with hamburgers, chips, cold drinks, and coffee on sale on the night. The carols program begins at 6.30pm and there are plenty of carols that you will know to sing along to and celebrate this special season. The evening will finish with fireworks at the family friendly time of 8.00pm. We are fortunate in our community to have a local business who does a spectacular job each year with the fireworks.

‘Tis the season to spread joy to kids in care Queenslanders are being urged to help spread the joy of Christmas to more than 8,600 children and young people living away from home this festive season, by donating a present. Child Safety Minister Tracy Davis launched the annual Newman Government’s Kids in Care Christmas Appeal today and said Christmas is the perfect time to give. “It takes a community to raise a child and this is particularly true for children who are unable to live with their own families,” Ms Davis said. “Christmas can be a difficult time for kids in care but one of the best ways to ease their burden is to bring a smile to their faces and it also lets them know that people really do care about them.” The member for Glass House Andrew Powell said last year’s campaign had touched more people than ever, including foster carers and children in care, with a record number of presents donated. “Our Kids in Care Christmas Appeal has such a

positive impact in communities’ right across this state and we saw this last year,” he said. Being a part of the appeal also sends a strong message of support to our wonderful foster carers and the important role they play within our communities The appeal runs until December 13. Unwrapped presents need to be suitable for a child aged 0 to 17 years. People can make their donation at Andrew Powell’s office, 4 / 70 Maple Street, Maleny,or the GCNews office at 16 Coonowrin Road, or the ABC radio studio at Maroochydore. Any surplus toys will be distributed to other children who are known to Child Safety.

Sunshine Coast festive season kicks off with a flick of a switch

Deputy Mayor Chris Thompson launched the Sunshine Coast Festive Season 2013 / 14 with the ‘switching on’ of the first Christmas tree at Mooloolaba last Thursday night. The tree is the biggest in the region and is one of 29 listed as part of the Sunshine Coast Christmas Tree Trail outlined in the Sunshine Coast Festive Season Guide 2013 / 14. Locally there are decorated trees at Glass House Mountains on Reed Street, outside the Visitor Information Centre and at the entrance to Maleny Township. The guide lists more than 80 fun, family-friendly festive season events and activities happening throughout December and January, making it easy for residents and visitors to plan which events they want to attend to get them into the festive mood.

Local events include the Mooloolah Community Centre’s Christmas Barbeque on Friday, December 6 from 4.00pm – 8.00pm which will have a free jumping castle for the kids. There will also be the Community Carols event held at the Beerwah Sportsgrounds on Saturday, December 14 with pre-event activities starting at 5.00pm and the carols kicking off at 6.30pm and to end the night there will be a spectacular fireworks. To obtain a free guide to the region’s range of festive season community events and activities, visit council’s website, or pick up a copy from your local library, visitor information centres and council’s customer contact centres, venues and facilities.

Poison Kandy Klothing and Memorabilia This is a family run business that is truly passionate about all things Rockabilly. Recently opened by Derek and Debra Klockner, along with their two daughters Kat and Hidee, the store specialises in rockabilly clothing, garage memorabilia and themed vintage collectables. The family started a rockabilly themed market and the dresses and accessories sold so well that they expanded into garage memorabilia. “It all comes down to our passion for this lifestyle that we’ve been into for as long as we can remember,” says Derek. It’s an appeal that applies to all members of the family as they often bring their hot rod’s to work. Derek drives a 1931 Ford Victoria, Debra a 1972 Dodge Challenger, Kat brings her 1973 LJ Torana and Hidee her 1966 Ford Mustang. Starting next year, Deb and Derek will be holding monthly muscle car gatherings for other hot rod enthusiasts. As part of their garage memorabilia, the shop sells

replica tin signs, gas bowsers and barstools, plus a host of other related items. “It’s a good way to set up their shed’s and bars as old time garages, and a great way to furnish a man cave,” says Derek. The shop and online business try to cater to both the girls and guys. They cater for all sizes from XS to XXXXL in women’s clothing and Medium to XXXL in men's shirts, as well as stocking kids clothing. “The reason we got into the clothing and memorabilia was because it was so hard to source good quality alternative fashion at a reasonable price,” Deb says. “We dress in it and love it. From the dresses to the upstyle hair and makeup, to the pinup shoes and handbags – we love it all.” From bobby socks to bobble head collectables, themed bibs and baby rompers to bar memorabilia and die cast collectable cars, the Poison Kandy team are happy to assist your search for that

EXCELLENCE IN DENTAL CARE FRIENDLY SUPPORTIVE STAFF 20 Karanne Drive, Mooloolah (next to Medical Centre)

Contributed by Jenny Morris Glasshouse Country View Club For our last luncheon of the year (besides our Christmas Party on December 4), 39 of our members with guests enjoyed an enlightening talk on family history. June Blackburn and Valerie Thornton from the Caloundra Family History Research Group gave some information on how to get started on researching our family trees. Some interesting tips were to record everything you find but always check to confirm the information is correct. Get yourself organised and keep all information and photos etc in chronological order of each main person for later reference. Always date your information and which source you received it either certificates or interviews etc. Always write up a ‘Group Family Sheet’ and ‘Pedigree’ chart. If you are recording your family tree online never make it public. You choose who can access your information. Some online sites are: Ancestry.com, Find My Past, The Genealogist and Family Search. The Caloundra Family History Research Group is open Thursdays 9.30am to 4.00pm and Saturdays 9.30am to 12.00noon at the Caloundra Guide Hut in Arthur Street, Caloundra.

By Lea Parkes The team at the Glasshouse Neighbourhood Centre are really proud of their new computer purchased from the funds raised with their recent Country Market and raffles that saw them raise $1,761.60. The team were keen to express their gratitude to Ian from Beerwah Computer Services in Turner Park who sold them the computer at a great price. He gave them excellent service, and by purchasing locally they have kept the money in our local economy. Having an additional computer means that they are able to offer the local community members computer access in exchange for a gold coin donation for a half hour session, they also provide a photocopying and faxing service at the centre.

They would love a few extra volunteers so that they could extend their hours, so if there is anyone who is looking to volunteer for three or four hours they would love to hear from you. One of the newest volunteers to join the team is Jenny. She said volunteering has been fantastic for her, before she said she really didn’t get out much and volunteering has been great for building up her confidence. “I really liked that I was able to be rostered on with another volunteer until I was comfortable doing it on my own, I would really encourage others to give it a go,” Jenny said. Following on from the success of their recent country market, they hope to do other events in the next year, however they will be looking for volunteers to help them bring it all together. Once they have some firmer plans in place, they will let everyone know through GCNews. If you think you might be interested in becoming a volunteer, call in and see them or give them a call during opening hours. Driving test information Contributed by Landsborough Driver Training Today we would like to share some information on the driving test. It usually takes around 35 minutes in which you will drive a varied route to test you on your understanding of the road rules and control of the car. You may get some of the following, hill start, U-turn (four types), turnaround, reversing exercise, reverse park, and gear change (for automatic). During the test, the examiner will assess your understanding of the System of Vehicle Control. In this time you are allowed to have eight non-critical errors (NCDE), one more and your driving test is unsuccessful. An example of a NCDE is selecting the incorrect gear for a situation i.e. entering roundabout in fourth gear. Critical driving error (CDE) are for example, if you do a reverse park too quickly and run into or onto the kerb. In these cases the driving test will be terminated. The best way to prepare for the test is to drive in an area you are not familiar with and preferably in a bigger town. Driving to school and back or a trip to the shopping centre doesn’t give you the driving experience you need. If you are looking for a practical Christmas gift, we offer Vouchers for driving lessons (manual and automatic). Normally, not much changes in Peachester – and why would it, the locals say it’s paradise as it is. But last week saw a big step forward for Peachester when Lyn and Ian reopened the petrol bowser outside their Peachester General Store. It’s been a long time coming – it is two years since the authorities closed down the pump, and since last April when Lyn and Ian returned to operate the shop, they’ve been working behind the scenes to get it approved Lyn and Ian help fuel up Tige's ute again. “Our goal has always been to have the fuel back available for locals and travellers, and I’m so excited and pleased that it’s finally happened,” said Lyn. “Many locals have been asking about it, and I know that they’ll be happy now they can access fuel again and at the same time know they are supporting a local business and keeping the general store viable.” Both unleaded and diesel fuel are available, and Ian and Lyn can help with good old fashioned ‘driveway service’ if needed. Local resident ‘Tige’ Eddie is also happy the petrol’s back. “It saves time and mucking around not having to go down the range just to get some fuel,” he said. The bowser will be open whenever the shop is – which is 6.00am to 6.00pm, seven days a week, and there is a $10.00 minimum purchase with EFTPOS. While you’re there, you might like to sample one of Lyn’s famous steak sandwiches. Next door at Good Old Days, Maureen has been working hard and is putting Friday night dinners back onto the menu. From December 13 – and then every fortnight thereafter – the renowned Friday night dinners will be held at the café and antique / collectables shop. “We used to have full houses when we ran them before, and locals have been asking us to start them again,” said Maureen and Kim check over the menu Maureen “We’ll be changing the menu each fortnight, so there will be something new to try each time. “And the night is BYO – so bring your esky or cooler bag.” Bookings are absolutely essential – just call the café on 5494 9118. There are always vegetarian options on the menu, and gluten free choices can be created (just mention this when booking). Maureen also says they look after seniors – with a 10% discount for seniors card holders. Down at Peachester Fruit and Veg and Heyman Produce, their fantastic friendly service and great range of products hasn’t changed. Except that business owner Leanne Merrett says they have a bigger and better range of gardening products and plants than ever before. “And we’ve changed our hours slightly – so now we’re open 9.00am until 5.00pm Monday to Friday, 8.00am until 12.30pm Saturday and 9.00am until 2.00pm Sunday. “As we’re a family run business, Russell and I really wanted some more family time,” said Leanne. Loraine Wilkinson – who works in the fruit and veggie section – also has her own business called ‘Re-Vamp It Alterations’, which she runs next to the store. If you’ve got clothing that needs alterations or repairs, or if you’d like something created, call into the store and see Loraine. Loraine with local satisfied customer Linda www.gcnews.com.au

I have also worked all over the world with clients as well as regularly doing phone readings for overseas clients. When it comes to doing a reading the ‘rules’ for me are pretty simple. I take what spirit give me in the reading because the reading isn't about me, it is about what spirit want to communicate to the person they have got to sit in front of me. Often spirit go to great lengths to get people in front of me so it is up to me to honour them with honesty. The best way is to make sure my own emotions stay out of the way. School News High distinction for school captain

Landsborough State School is celebrating the success of one of their students and current School Captain, Eli Budd. Eli recently received a high distinction in the National Computer Science School Challenge. Over 6000 students competed in the challenge nationally. Eli's result was in the top 15% of her peers nationally. On top of this remarkable achievement, Eli has been awarded with one of only five Beerwah State High School Academic Scholarships for 2014. Landsborough Landsborough State School Principal, Kristy Walton, said her student, Eli Budd application was quite outstanding. “It’s testament to her own diligence and effort, her family's support and the dedication of our staff in teaching her. “I am certain she will be as great an asset to Beerwah State High School as she has been to Landsborough State School,” Kristy said. Congratulations Eli, Landsborough State School is very proud of you.

School News from Emma Offord Glasshouse Country Christian College correspondent This year sure has been a hectic one; and I’m sure all Year 12s around Australia would agree with me. With QCS and the pressures of last time assessments, it was all a little stressful – I’m too young to have grey hairs! But as most things do, it all came to an end. On November 12, Glasshouse Country Christian College had their last Year 12 assessments and with that school was done! All that was left was the formal and then graduation. On the Thursday evening of that week the Year 12s and their families gathered for the annual formal, and what a stunner it was! With the girls all glammed up and the guys rocking their classy suits, the night went off without a hitch – and a lot of dancing was involved, even the Principal, Mr Curtis joined in! After the late night before, the next day was the last – forever. There were 48 graduating Year 12s who said good bye to GCCC as they walked through the students lining the walkways. A lot of tears were shed and good byes shared but one thing for sure that put a smile on everyone’s face was… No more homework! Congratulations to the graduating class of 2013, we did it!

Term 4 at Beerburrum State School has been very busy…

While the school year is drawing to a close, the students at Beerburrum State School are keeping very busy. The whole school recently celebrated National Recycling Week and participated in the ‘Cleaner, Greener Schools Art Competition’. Students used litter and recyclable items to create ‘Art Pieces’ (sculptures / collages) with the theme of a toy or pet. There were some very cleaver designs / creations! In preparation for the summer school holidays, students in Years 5, 6 and 7 have been going to Alexandra Headland Beach, where ‘Surf Skills Lessons’ are run by the Surf Lifesaving Club. Students are learning valuable beach safety skills as well as having lots of fun! While students in Prep, 1, 2 and 3 are having a great time at the Beerwah Pool participating in the Learn to Swim program. Most importantly all the students should be very proud of themselves for showing such confidence and persistence! To top off a busy couple of weeks, students in the Prep / 1 class were lucky enough to have a visit from the Beerwah Fire brigade. Students were taught about the different types of fires, the types of things a fire fighter does in their job and the equipment they use, as well as some important safety lessons on what to do if they are in a dangerous fire situation. Students loved seeing the fire truck ‘up close’ and they asked many interesting questions about the truck and the gear that is in it. A BIG thank-you to the Firemen that came along!

I think most dads are guilty of taking things for granted sometimes. Particularly things that seem to magically happen on a daily basis, like the meal that presents itself on the table at day’s end, or the clothes that turn up clean and ready for another outing. That’s not to say that on the other side of the universe, our wives or partners are completely innocent either. The point I’m highlighting is that quite often we forget to say thankyou for routines that become familiar. As a parent, I believe a very important role is to acknowledge the many achievements of our children. With the year very quickly rolling towards its close, our kids are about to close another chapter in their schooling journey. This will be marked with the usual report cards and other school rewards like academic awards. It’s important to make a big deal about these accomplishments at home. A perfect place would be around the dinner table. While we all don’t have an ‘Einstein’ in the house, it’s not hard to find something that’s worthy of praise. Sometimes a C in a subject is an awesome result for somebody who has given their all. Everybody appreciates a pat on the back, and with a bit of luck your praise may be the fertiliser your child needs to take some big steps at school next year. There’s lots of cool ways to make your child feel special too. Get them to choose a new plant for the garden, which can symbolise their growth year by year? Maybe dinner out at their choice of restaurant? My wife recently introduced our family to ‘the Red plate’; a special plate that dinner is served onto to honour a member of the family who has done something special. Our kids seem to really appreciate this special form of praise; simple but effective. So what are you waiting for? Pull out that spotlight, and start shining!

The Superdads – we are a bunch of guys who love playing music and have formed a band. Their name came from something their guitarist Pete said once… “I don’t just want to be an average dad, I want to be an exceptional dad” – the idea resonated with them. www.superdads.com.au www.gcnews.com.au

& Parenting Glass House residents urged to help kids in care celebrate this Christmas

“Our Kids in Care Christmas Appeal has such a positive impact in communities right across this state and we saw this last year with the true Queenslander spirit stronger than ever before.” “Being a part of the appeal also sends a strong message of support to our wonderful foster carers and the important role they play within our communities.” Presents need to be suitable for a child aged birth to 17 years. People can make their donation at their local child safety service centre, the Sunshine Coast ABC studio, or the Glass House electorate office located at Suite 4/70 Maple Street, Maleny. The appeal runs until December 13. Any surplus toys will be distributed to other children who are known to Child Safety. For gift ideas, or to find the closest donation point, visit www.communities.qld.gov.au.

HOLIDAY PROGRAMME

Glass House residents can help bring a smile to the faces of children and young people living in care on Christmas Day by donating a present to the Newman Government’s annual Kids in Care Christmas Appeal. Member for Glass House Andrew Powell MP said locals could show their community spirit by dropping in and leaving a present under his electorate office Christmas tree. “This year’s appeal acknowledges that it takes a whole ‘village’ or community to raise a child and we must lend our support to the hundreds of foster and kinship carers who do a great job all year round,” Mr Powell said. “I am encouraging all Glass House residents to be part of the village and show they care by supporting our Christmas appeal. “Our community is known for pulling together to help each other and this time we’re pulling together to show our support for kids in care.” Mr Powell said presents like gift cards, sporting equipment, board games, clothes and books to the value of about $20.00 would be very well received. “Last year’s campaign had touched more people than ever, including foster carers and children in care, with a record number of presents donated,” Mr Powell said.

Make a suggestion and win

Local Glasshouse author Cathy Bauman is planning to rework two books in her old series of books, one is about a shadow and the other is about a grain of sand. She is also planning on doing some new books one about a worm and another about a wooden chair. However she would also like suggestions from the community about what topics they would like to learn / read about? Email your suggestion to reception@gcnews.com. au or send us a private message on our Facebook Page or you can call the office and give us your suggestion. All suggestions will go into a draw and one lucky entrant will win the prize of a set of four books - perfect for Christmas.

Matilda Servo

When you are thinking of catering for Christmas whether it be for a Christmas party in the lead up or having someone else take care of preparing your lunch on the big day – then you should consider Matilda’s Servo. Yes that’s right – I know when you go inside you see the hot box with chips, burgers and chicko rolls – but that isn’t the whole story. Out the back they have a massive commercial kitchen and Manager Deb is happy to sit down and talk to you about your catering requirements and what they can offer. How good is the idea of dropping in to them on Christmas Day and picking up a platter of turkey, chicken, ham and roast pork sound?

Combine that with some really tasty, home style German potato salad, coleslaw and tossed salads all made fresh on site, and your guests will think you made it yourself! You won’t even need to let them know you didn’t do the hard work. The girls did up a platter in the photo (below) as a sample of meats and salads that would be served with dinner rolls for a party of six; they would charge you $60.00. For $10.00 a head, it’s pretty good value, and all you have to do is give them a call to order it and then go and pick it up! And if your guests have a sweet tooth, they will also do bowls of trifle, pavlovas, fruit salads and a cheese platter to end the meal.

Living Photography Corner with the Grafx Group Photo contributed by Sally

Maroochy Botanic Gardens – after the rain

After rain is a great time to get those cameras out and go exploring. The light at this time can allow you to see your subject matter in a different way - as demonstrated by this beautiful example taken at Maroochy Botanic Gardens. Sally used a Sony DSLR model SLT-A55V, 1855mm lens, Aperture 5.6. She then enhanced the colour in a photo-editing program and added a slight paint overlay. A great day out for a picnic with the family!

Centenary Reunion Peachester History Committee

The reunion on November 3 for the former Commissioner's Flat and Crohamhurst Schools was also 'largely attended' – a very enjoyable day, especially for those catching up with old friends.

Hidden treasures

Memorabilia saved from past events and milestones may include seemingly unremarkable items, which on closer inspection reveal an amazing amount of information. While preparing the PHC display of photographs and memorabilia for the recent Centenary Reunion, we were reminded of the importance of such ‘hidden treasures’ in any local history collection. This simple little souvenir card is an example.

Margaret Ward (nee McCosker), Stuart McCosker, Governor Penny Wensley. (Note – Meg and Stuart's father Ted and all that generation of McCoskers attended Commissioner's Flat School)

Glasshouse Mountains Musos

Contributed by Dr Michael Whiticker Maori performer Andy H is a passionate singer songwriter and when he appears at the Musos we anticipate original repertoire and a captivating show. His commitment to his music is written all over his face – it is pure theatre and it draws an audience in. So we were not totally surprised on this occasion when he appeared with the basis of a children’s drum kit - played with ‘adult-sized’ pedals, and a new resonator guitar. His set was typical Andy - goofy at times but always riveting, and along with his originals including ‘Runnin’ Round in Circles’ – an Andy classic. Other acts on the night included a solo set from Doug Pullen which reflected a political motivation – his performance of Indian Reservation (the Cherokee Nation song) for example was the more poignant when he drew our attention to the lyrics proposing we swap ‘Indigenous’ for ‘Cherokee’, and even the humorous number recorded by Johnny Cash ‘The One on the Right is on the Left’ - sending up musicians mixing music and politics, took on a deeper meaning with Doug’s altered lyrics, and the ‘guy in the rear’ still left out of the equation. Band sets on the night were led by Scoobs Powell, Paul Fagan, and yours truly. My tribute to Lou Reed was enlivened by the fine drum kit work of Jeff (always a pleasure to have him visit us in the mountains)! We have a theme for the next two Musos Clubs on the fourth Sunday of the month - November 24, and fourth Thursday - November 28. November is Australian Music Month all over the place (especially on the ABC) so we will join in and feature ‘Oz Myoozic’! It’s not a very original theme, but it gives us an excuse to dust off our originals! Hope to see you there. www.gcnews.com.au

Here we see the names of many local residents, showing who had taken a role in establishing the school, as well as the current (1938) committee. We note that famous long-range weather forecaster Inigo Jones was the Secretary in 1913 and 1938, possibly indicating a 25 year term in that office. We also find out the name of the first teacher, Miss Laura James, and the name of the teacher in 1938. (A little local knowledge allows us to take this a step further, and acknowledge that Mr W Brown later married Inigo Jones’ daughter, Barbara). This card led to a search of ‘Trove’ for news items of the time, resulting in an equally informative report from the Courier Mail, August 3, 1938: ‘Peachester The celebration of the Silver Jubilee of the Crohamhurst State School on July 19 was largely attended. The Chairman of the School Committee Mr. L. Clancy welcomed Mrs. S. Howland formerly Miss L.J. James the first Head Teacher. The present Head Teacher Mr. W.J. Brown gave particulars of the history of the school and Mr. Inigo Jones presented the prizes for recitations and spelling. Mrs. S. Howland planted a weeping fig tree which was dedicated by Mr. Owen Jones. Mr. J.G. Collins who has been associated with the school since the opening gave an address. Refreshments were provided by women residents.’ The moral of this story? Never throw out your memorabilia! Peachester History Committee’s Christmas lunch and meeting will be on Sunday, December 1 at the Peachester Hall, from 11.00am. All welcome, and please bring something for the shared lunch. Note that we do not meet in January; and the first meeting for 2014 will be on Sunday, February 2.

Re: Free buses during Christmas period

At a recent meeting of Residents Association South Sunshine Coast Division 2 Councillor Tim Dwyer was a guest speaker. He was quoted as saying that the free buses during the Christmas period were not the best application for funds arising from the council transport levy and that there was a big need to increase the use of public transport throughout the whole year. Landsborough Area Community Association Inc. totally agrees with Cr Dwyer’s comments and also agrees with the Residents Association South Sunshine Coast suggestion that council should look at subsidising bus fares from the transport levy as an alternative to free buses during the Christmas period. In Landsborough, during this period of free buses, we have noticed that large numbers of visitors to the area are getting off the trains and using the free buses to go to the beach. We have seen so many people waiting for buses at times that another bus has had to be provided to accommodate the number of people waiting. We believe that the free buses are an illconceived method of using the transport levy and do nothing to promote the use of public transport in general. A year-round subsidy may increase the use of this service. A. Husband Secretary LACA Inc.

Rooster complaint

I would like to address a number of issues raised in the rooster complaint made in the last edition (GCNews November 20). Firstly I would like to point out that we live in a rural area and every second person has roosters, which under council bylaws is allowed. From the details in your letter I am aware that you believe my rooster is the noisy one? Well, I would like to invite you to my house around 3.00am - 3.30am to sit on my front deck and listen. Also you might find going and talking to your neighbours a better way to communicate things that are bothering you. Your suggestion of placing a rooster in a box doesn’t stop it crowing, and you would be liable to be fined by the RSPCA as it is an act of animal cruelty. My last words will be - why buy in a rural area if you don’t like animal noises? Lynda Kingdom Glasshouse

Wake up and smell the roses!

I'd like to thank Kerry Gillam for suggesting I focus my efforts into saving battery hens. Thanks Kerry, but I really don't care how chooks are farmed. As I have neither the time nor the inclination to raise my own hens and eggs, I am happy to let the farmers do it their way. What I do care about is my quality of life at my home, specifically not having to put up with disgusting odours from any source, be it a chook shed, or a sewage plant, or any other stench from

a commercial property. As I said previously, industry standards should be in place for mandatory control of these issues with all chook sheds, so that nearby residential properties are not affected. Mr ‘Let's Keep It Rural’ says you get used to it after a while - what nonsense! It doesn't improve with age. And as for the statement of preferring the smell of chook sheds to the prospect of housing developments, then you obviously haven't noticed that it's already been happening here for the last few years, and will no doubt continue in the future. Personally, I would much rather put up with loud music from the recent festival (which was for one day only) and know that local youngsters and families were able to have a good time close to home at this social event. A big ‘well done’ to the festival organisers for making it happen in our community, and good luck with the next one. Jenny Waldock Glass House Mountains

Wild dog baiting hazards

After reading last week’s article from the Minister of Agriculture Mr John McVeigh, it rang alarm bells. Although I agree that there is a wild dog problem for graziers and land owners, I don’t agree to hand over the reins to these land owners and trust that baiting products won’t end up in the right hands. I feel that products such as these needs to be restricted to authorities who govern where, how and when to bait. I can imagine how much bait would be used anywhere and everywhere if the land owners can easily get hold of it. Not only would pets be vulnerable, but the native wildlife would come under further jeopardy. Reptiles such as monitors and marsupials such as possums and birds such as raptor species will either eat the bait or eat the carcass which dies as a result of the bait. Wild dog baiting needs to be strictly controlled and signs need to be put up in places where it is being used and very closely monitored. Concerned resident Glass House Mountains

ask our elected representatives for assistance to lobby Telstra to improve what really is a second rate service and to bring Glass House Mountains out of the stone-age. I have put a petition together to present to both parties. Our only hope of improving our lack of service is for someone to do something about this, as complaining to Telstra has fallen on deaf ears. I will be asking local businesses in Glass House Mountains over the weekend to place the petition on the counters, so locals can show their concern for the issue. Fed up Glass House Mountains Editor’s note: It would seem that your timing for getting the petition in place is perfect, as you will have seen on page 3 we have a story where Mal Brough is keen to host a community meeting next year to hear from locals about their concerns.

Embracing the lifestyle

After reading the passionate cry for quiet in last week's issue regarding the problem rooster on Coonowrin Road, I feel inspired to voice my own concerns. Although I don't mind the crow of a rooster, I am sick and tired of the horrendous racket caused by kookaburras each morning at 4.00am. Although we chose to live in a semi rural area, I just cannot abide these outrageous creatures. Surely someone can do something about this early morning disturbance! Or perhaps I should just suck it up or move to Caloundra. Name supplied Glass House Mountains

Bushfires - Be Aware Keep your eye on the fire danger sign outside Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club - the current rating is...

Falling on deaf ears After reading numerous letters to the Editor regarding the service provided by Telstra Communications and the current rate of reception received, I would like to know what is being done about the situation? The lack of reception for mobiles and internet services around our town is similar to third world conditions and yet we are being charged the same rates as those people in areas receiving full reception and services. Recently I complained to Telstra (again) and was told for $30.00 per month over two years I could pay off a booster which would help my reception (or lack of it) or at additional cost I could connect a land line. My argument is I already pay for services not provided and Telstra are selling services they are not capable of supplying. In consumer law this could be classified a breach of contract. As a community we need to rally together and

LOW–MODERATE. Fires can be easily controlled and pose little threat to people or property. What to do – review your bushfire survival plan and monitor the situation for any changes. Gavin Stewart, Volunteer Community Educator

Rick Baberowski Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council P: 5420 8987 Our community

Festive season Banners are up and the festive season has begun and you can now see some extra sparkle in the ‘Christmas’ tree at Settlers Rotary Park in Glasshouse – the lights get bigger and better every year and this year is no exception. Businesses in Landsborough are driving a ‘Light up Landsborough’ campaign to light up local businesses during the festive season. The historic Landsborough Pub is leading the way along with Landsborough’s local LED lighting supplier and I’m providing divisional funding to contribute to the costs of more lights, assuming business support. This year all Cribb Street businesses are invited to participate and we’re anticipating a good response that will give the main street a strong festive feel.

Beerwah’s blueprint for the future As part of Council’s consultation on the finalisation of the Beerwah Public Domain Masterplan we met with the Glasshouse Chamber of Commerce. We received some very positive feedback and were able to discuss finer details on the parking, signage and connectivity between the library, parks and the main shopping precinct. We talked in detail about Turner Park and improving the future play experience to attract locals and visitors into this green heart of the town. Leveraging off the Beerwah streetscaping work that’s currently underway, improving amenity and movement around the town, while taking advantage of view lines and open space has all been taken into consideration in the plan. The next step is for the Masterplan to be presented to the full Council for their consideration and we will then potentially look to the annual budget to start implementing actions outlined in the plan.

Jenny McKay

Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 Council is replacing a bridge along the Eumundi School Road at Rosebed Street in Eudlo and we have an information session planned for locals who would like to know more about the project. We’ll be out the front of the Eudlo News and General Store on Tuesday, December 3, from 8.00am to 9.30am to answer your questions about the construction process. Festive season celebrations have begun and Council has flicked on the region’s signature Christmas tree at Mooloolaba Esplanade. This year’s Christmas Tree Trail has 29 trees in towns all across the Coast and it’s well worth looking out for the trees in the towns closest to you. There’s over 80 celebrations taking place right across the region and they’re all listed in Council’s ‘Sunshine Coast Festive Season Program 2013/14’ that you can get on our website. If you’re thinking of making an addition to your family in the form of a pet this Christmas remember to make sure you check out Council’s website for information about responsible pet ownership. You’ll find helpful information on everything you need to know about appropriate pet enclosures, microchipping, registration and more. I’m holidaying with my family in China at the moment and am very excited about introducing my grandkids to the incredible culture, sights and experiences of the country. I’ll be back in time for the next Mooloolah community breakfast meeting on Thursday, December 5, at 7.30am. I look forward to seeing you there to talk about what’s happening in the local community. www.gcnews.com.au

The RSL Remembrance Day Service at the Settlers Rotary Park Cenotaph in Glasshouse is always very moving. I was honoured to lay a wreath on your behalf at the ceremony that was made all the more special with the attendance of army and navy cadets and a spectrum of locals from the RSL and wider community. I was delighted to present a number of awards at the Glasshouse Country Christian College Middle and Senior School Awards night. It was an impressive evening at the Caloundra Events Centre and I’d like to acknowledge the achievements, excellent performances and inspiring presentations made by students and staff on the evening. Travelling Tales with Chris and Martin Bell, formerly of Beerwah Where did you go? In August we embarked on a 22 day Outback Adventure starting in Darwin travelling by coach to Broome and down the West Coast to Perth. Highlights? One highlight was an early morning flight up the Ord River over Lake Argyle, the Argyle Diamond and over the striped domed beehive rock formations of the Bungle Bungle Mountains which were only discovered in 1982. We had an amazing trip up the orange and black Chamberlain Gorge (El Questro Station) with Jim who sang Tenterfield Saddler while he played his Tommy Emmanuel guitar as we fed large barramundi and the spitting fish; a fascinating trip to Argyle Diamond Mine for lunch and Mine Tour; the Yiyilli Aboriginal School and Laari Art Gallery with 12 teachers and about 65 Aboriginal children where the children’s ‘coffee shop’ practiced their hospitality skills on our group. We had two nights relaxing at the exotic Cable Beach Spa Resort in Broome where we zapped across the sand and into the water in a bright yellow Hovercraft to walk in the ancient giant dinosaur footprints, a rare and intriguing palaeontologist site. We could not resist the opportunity for a sunset camel ride along Cable Beach. Not the most comfortable hour in our life, but a lot of fun. Karijini National Park tented accommodation on wooden floors was comfy, but oh so cold at night - specially getting up to go to the outdoor toilet! The West Coast is pristinely unspoilt, Shell Beach unique and Monkey Mia awesome as we spotted so many Dugongs. Many other wonderful experiences were shared with a great bunch of Aussies on our scenic tour. Most unusual experience? Learning about the Stromatolites (breathing bubbling rocks) at Shark Bay. Other Information: We always keep an extensive diary to go with our many travel pictures which are made into presentation DVD’s so that we can revisit some wonderful places when we are unable to travel any more.. Happy Travelling….

Communal productive gardening in Beerwah Modern high density living means that we often forgo the pleasure of growing our own fruits, vegetables and herbs. There are some really great balcony garden systems – but they just don’t give you the same satisfaction as digging a spade into the ground and turning over the soil. One group of Beerwah residents decided that, to get their gardening fix, communal is the way to go. The management of their eight unit complex – Coast2Bay Housing Group – thought it was a great idea and worked with the residents so that they could use some of the common grounds for garden beds. As luck would have it, there is a program called ‘Active, healthy Sunshine Coast’ which was looking for somewhere to use as a pilot project. This is a Sunshine Coast Council initiative funded by the Australian Government and supported by Focus Health Network Ltd – a not-for-profit group which works to improve the health and wellbeing of Sunshine Coast residents. Focus Health Network agreed to run a series of workshops and learning experiences, and provide information guides which would empower the group at the unit complex to not just be able to grow their own food, but to be aware of the trials and tribulations that come with ‘communal gardening’.

So, in partnership with Focus Health Network,Coast2Bay Housing Group and the keen-as-mustard residents, a plan was hatched to build the communal gardens over a five week period. During this time they would learn various skills such as garden construction, planting, composting, propagation, worm farming and general garden health. During the final two weeks of the program, they would also take part in cooking workshops delivered onsite, on how to cook their own garden produce and the benefits of healthy eating. Leonie Shanahan, who runs Edible School Gardens and has presented organic gardening workshops at Sunshine Coast Council libraries, came on-board to Communal gardening means everyone pitches in be the garden guru for the group. Thelie Hobbs Suncoast Church Hinterland The secret of a happy, joy-filled life, I believe is a grateful heart. There can never be a possibility of a life of happiness if we can’t learn to appreciate what we have. Take Mary, Jesus’ Mother as our example. Mary’s free and full response to God’s purpose for her life is a great example. Her song found in Luke 1:46-55 is the beautiful expression of a heart full of thanks: “…My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Saviour. For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed. For He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name..” Happiness does not come when we are reluctant to accept a new situation, or a new challenge or difficult responsibility, but when we embrace it and thank God for the opportunity to grow. Mary did not simply resign herself to her fate. She saw God acting, God loving, God offering, and she unreservedly embraced her new life and found true happiness by living her life with a grateful heart. After all these years, Mary remains a model for all generations. She said YES to God’s offer of love.

She gratefully worshipped and thanked Him. This Christmas season let’s remember the love that God gave to us in His son Jesus. I hope and pray that we open our hearts enough to do the same as Mary did, and say YES to God’s perfect offer of love! Merry Christmas! Dear Reader, This is my last column for the year, I just wanted to say thank you for your support and for taking the time to read these columns! I hope they have been a blessing to you, as it is a real honour to share with you and I am thankful for the opportunity. I hope that 2014 brings you and yours, a new adventure, and a journey marked with joy, health and God opportunities. Merry Christmas and God bless you real good!

SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 It’s best not to follow over blown emotions with your own Sun sign because you can expand into over indulging financially and romantically. With Venus and Jupiter in opposition, your ruling planet seeks pleasure. Lots of luck may come your way with the turn of the wheel. Possible chances with lottery. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Messages and invitations from a variety of sources can give you cause for considerable jubilation. Don’t allow yourself to become too complacent about your job or status in the world. Keep pace of the changes that are imposed on you. This is certainly not the best time to charge out into uncharted waters. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 With the Sun now entering the adventurous Sagittarius sign, you will participate more in lively, engaging social groups, friendly encounters and great team work. Focus on one major idea at a time, so you can finally resolve them. Join in with progressive others for an exciting social project or noble cause. PISCES February 20 – March 20 Outstanding announcements may involve all sorts of wonderful possibilities. It just points out to keep an open mind with the emphasis on cooperation. Encounters with anything that is new or unusual should be welcomed as opportune. Bold steps can result in financial rewards. Enjoy great purchases.

trick." The baker is getting suspicious but he gives it to him. He eats this one too. Then he says again, "give me one more biscuit." The baker is getting angry now but gives him one anyway. Graham eats this one too. Now the baker is really mad, and yells, "where's your famous magic trick?" Graham says: "Look in the Shane’s pocket." Submitted by Hugh Jones, Beerwah Week beginning 27/11/13

ARIES March 21 – April 20 A serious discussion about joint funding and a much-needed budget reform requires a responsible commitment from yourself and others. It’s easy to emotionally overshoot a future target and borrow too much. Just enjoy congenial talks and a sensible approach which ensures security to your home and office. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 A decision to change direction or move, possibly made earlier in the month, could come up for review and require correction. A friend’s announcement may be cause for jubilation. Luckily a string of supportive aspects gives your confidence a boost and makes you more adaptable to a positive life. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Now that the Sun has entered the fun loving sign of Sagittarius you should attract adventurous companions and publicise your own ideas with some zeal. You will seriously throw out unhealthy habits once and for all and keep those that have proved to have positive potential. Search for answers now. CANCER June 22 – July 22 Projects requiring considerable commitment should be tackled now with confidence. Take the views of your partner into consideration, sharing your talents. Current trends add support to making your ideas realistic instead of illusive. Nail down details of projects now and include other people in plans.

LEO July 23 – August 22 Now that the Sun is in the outgoing Sagittarius sign you will be more ready to take chances to obtain your goals and romantic desires. It’s time for optimism and child-like delight. Your heart is open like Don Quixote to every creative or romantic dream, however stay aware of what is sensible and realistic. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 This week there is a connection between Mercury and Saturn which will ask you to stop and make sure your facts are correct before journeying along. Watch out for the end of the month as an extravagant Venus and Jupiter in opposition will have you looking at a very expensive and pleasurable item now. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 With the Sun sign now in Sagittarius it brings a positive focus to all Librans on their future. It stimulates new ideas, interesting local connections and fostering a happy spirit. Time spent with brothers and sisters should be uplifting. Whilst your imagination is beautiful, it’s best to base plans on practicality. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 A sense of shared traditions brings people together and it’s the best time to listen to what older relatives have to say. If you are looking at your holiday gift list, or other expenses, it’s a very good idea to think about where you can make economical cuts. Keep anxieties in check and just stay positive.

Two mates go into a bakery. The first, Shane, whisks three biscuits into his pocket with such speed the baker doesn’t notice. Shane says to his mate Graham, "you’ll never beat that!" Graham says to Shane, "watch and learn!" He says to the baker "give me a biscuit, I'll show you a magic trick!" The baker gives him the biscuit which Graham promptly eats. Then he says to the baker, "give me another biscuit for my magic
