Hi Everyone
L
ast Wednesday night we were at the Meet the Candidates Night that GCNews had organised for the Chamber of Commerce. It went well – considering there were 10 candidates that all attended along with two senate candidates. It was a great opportunity to get a better idea of the personalities behind the political signage. And while I am on the topic of political signage – I was really pleased to note at the candidates night someone in the audience made a request that candidates consider not nailing their signage directly into trees. I haven’t noticed any of the candidates making changes to the sign locations. However, at least they have been made aware that while the animals

Local News
Beerwah High Students rule in the kitchen GCNews recently brought you the story about Beerwah High students Jacinta Dwan and Shania Hunn who were heading to the 2013 EKKA Junior Secondary Schools Culinary Challenge finals. Clearly they knew their stuff, as they took out second place in the Queensland wide competition. On the day they were presented with trophies as well as receiving prize money of $350.00 plus the school also won $300.00 prize money. The judges all commented on the professionalism, dedication and sheer commitment shown by all the competitors. The girls prepared a ‘Chicken Ballantine’ with sautéed vegetables, hasselback potato, and caramelised pear with a rich, brown sauce. Jacinta and Shania put in many hours of practice to improve their skills and along their four month journey from the beginning of the competition refined and honed the recipe to present a winning dish. Each participating school partnered with an Industry Mentor, who offered the students

Drop in and see how we help thousands of women lose weight as easy as 1,2,3. MONDAY 2 – SATURDAY 14 SEPTEMBER
Weight loss program designed to end ‘yo yo’ dieting
The Curves Complete program aims to promote long term weight loss by boosting body metabolism, according to Linda from Curves Beerwah. “We want to end this pattern of women losing weight and then gaining it back. Curves Complete is designed to help women lose weight and keep it off permanently,” Linda said. “There are many diet plans available which help women lose weight but it’s often at the expense of losing valuable muscle - which slows down metabolism and can contribute to a lifetime of ‘yo-yo’ dieting. “The program takes a holistic approach, combining a scientifically proven 30 minute workout circuit with one-on-one coaching and personalised meal plans. “Most people who are serious about losing weight know it’s not just about dieting. They also need to exercise and they need encouragement to stick to the plan. This is what Curves Complete can provide. “Many local women had achieved great weight loss results already, after trying Curves Complete. “We have one local lady called Karen who lost 24.6 kilos in six months. She is over the moon and looking forward to keeping the weight off long term. Curves Complete has now become a life-style Curves Beerwah team choice for her,” Linda said. Linda, Carol and Toni

Really U.G.L.Y night
By Lea Parkes
No one would describe Glass House Mountains local Mandi Steensen as ugly, but she is proud to be an U.G.L.Y. bartender - that is ‘understanding, generous, likeable, you’ at the Beerwah Hotel. Mandi said she was pleased that the management of Beerwah Hotel, where she has worked for the past four years, were happy to get behind her fundraising efforts for the second year running. The U.G.L.Y Bartender efforts are for the Leukaemia Foundation and funds raised go to assist people suffering from blood cancers. If you were at the Beerwah Hotel last Thursday night and wondered if part of the dining room had been permanently turned into a Casino – don’t worry. Everything was back to normal by the following morning. The hotel became a haven for highrollers and card sharps all in the name of charity with Mandi and her support crew who organised the Hawaiian themed evening raising over $1,200.00 on the night.
Mandi Steensen with her cousin Cassie Harrison (right) and sister Tess Steensen (left) Mandi is keen to thank everyone involved for their support and generosity including the Beerwah Hotel, the local businesses that donated prizes for the raffle and all those that supported the event on the night.

Landsborough’s inspirational teachers The NEiTA Foundation has congratulated Landsborough State School on having six staff members nominated for an ASG Inspirational Teaching Award. Principal, Kristy Walton, along with teachers Mrs Irene Faulkner, Mrs Chris Jorgensen, Miss Bec Gibbs, Miss Hannah Beattie and Mrs Cassy Sutton were all nominated by members of the school community for one of these prestigious awards. Staff, students and the local community are celebrating the exciting news. Now in its 20th year, the National Excellence in Teaching Awards (NEiTA) program, supported by the Australian Scholarships Group (ASG), gives communities the opportunity to formally thank their hard-working and inspirational educators and leaders. The awards highlight the work, not only of individual teachers throughout Australia and New Zealand, but also the team contribution of all teachers in every school and centre. School Principal Kristy Walton said Landsborough State School was very fortunate to have a school full of staff who are incredibly passionate about
what they do in their commitment to provide the very best educational journey for each student at our school. “They treat their work as more than just a job. Thank you to all those community members that took the time to complete the nomination process and enable our school to recognise and appreciate these great teachers,” she said. All nominees are now eligible for consideration for a National ASG Inspirational Teaching Award and grant. One National awardee will be selected as NEiTA's teacher Ambassador of the Year to participate in the International Space Camp to be held in Alabama, USA, in July 2014. Well done teachers for all your hard work and dedication!

Art a family affair From their Peachester property and studio the art’s practice of Hew Chee Fong and LM Noonan covers decades of artistic thought and the physical manifestation of a combined aesthetic sensibility. Along with their twin sons; artist Sebastian Hew and photographer Oliver Hew, this superb cache of talent is making its presence known by being the first time in the history of The Sunshine Coast Art Prize (SCAP) that we have family members represented across all categories. “This year is no exception, as the Sunshine Coast demonstrates its artistic integrity through the Hew family, represented across each of the Prize categories: SCAP 2D, SCAP 3D and SCAP T3. LM Noonan as finalist in the 2D, Hew Chee Fong as finalist in 3D and two of their four sons: Oliver and Sebastian Hew as entrants in the SCAP T3 category,” said Ms Shadforth, Sunshine Coast Galleries director. The family’s matriarch, LM Noonan said that as in other families, where one or both parents are practicing artists, it is not unusual for the children to follow in their footsteps. “Growing up our sons attended many openings and exhibitions and we have been lucky enough to do quite a lot of travelling with the entire troupe in tow,” Ms Noonan said. “Talking about art, artists and the art making process is a natural part of our family environment. So it is not a surprise that our sons are all creative or that they are trying to make their way as creative professionals. Likewise it is
Noonan/Hew family. Front left to right: L.M.Noonan, Hew Chee Fong, Nicholas Hew, Siena Hart Back left to right: Joshua Hew, Jaala LeeEmery, Oliver Hew, Sebastian Hew, Stephanie Helleren not surprising that they have partners who share their passions and understand the demands of this kind of lifestyle. “I consider myself to be extremely fortunate. We are a tight knit group: my family are also my friends, trusted critics and colleagues. Fong and I have exhibited together several times since we met at art school (Newcastle University) in the early 80’s, however it is the first time that members of the second generation of our family are exhibiting at the same time, though not in the same venue. “I hope that one day we have the opportunity to exhibit together as there may be some interesting connections and resonances made apparent.” SCAP exhibitions for 2D, 3D and T3 are running at three unique locations with varying exhibit dates between mid-August until mid-October. Three charged with wilful damage at Beerburrum
Sunshine Coast police have charged three 19-year-old men from Caboolture in relation to an incident that occurred last week during an evening at the Red Road Overpass at Beerburrum. Police located the three men near the overpass and it will be alleged that around 6.00pm they were throwing water balloons off the overpass onto vehicles passing below on the Bruce Highway, causing damage to at least one vehicle. They were each issued with a Notice to Appear and are scheduled to appear in the Caboolture Magistrates Court on September 9.

Telstra tower disappoints locals By Greg Brown
Recently, Telstra completed the construction of their new mobile phone tower at the corner of Jeffreys Road and Steve Irwin Way, Glass House Mountains. This was in response to the community anger at the exceedingly poor mobile phone coverage the area was subjected to. At the time, Telstra said the issue was that the existing tower at Wild Horse Mountain was working beyond its optimal capacity. According to Telstra, the new tower would dramatically improve the phone reception for Telstra customers across the region. And at the end of July, when the tower was made operational, the GCNews mobile phones suddenly came to life inside our Coonowrin Road office – where previously they were just treated as expensive clocks. However, it seems that not all Telstra customers were reaping the benefits. The GCNews office has received multiple complaints from locals saying that their phone reception is no better. These are people living in Sahara Road, Coonowrin Road, Bowen Road and Springburn Drive – all not that far from where the tower is located. When we put this to Telstra in early August, their response was full of hope – but so far hasn’t led to a great deal of improvement.
Local Elite Downhill Mountain Bike winner The last race of the Downhill Mountain Bike Yakima Sunshine Series played out on Sunday, August 11 at Cedar Creek, near Kenilworth. Max Warshawsky a 16-year-old Mooloolah local, racing two levels up, capped off the series with his first win in the Elite class. This astonishing result placed him second overall in the series in spite of missing one of the five events. The track was steep, rocky and very dusty, with a few trips to hospital for some unlucky riders.

“Telstra continuously tweaks our network so that customers in coverage get the best network experience possible for the area. When we install new infrastructure it may take a few weeks of tweaking to optimise this into the existing network and how it interoperates with other existing sites,” said a Telstra spokesperson. “Engineering predictions can be influenced by the local environment and geography of an area.” We also asked them what steps people could take to making their concerns heard, to which we have yet to receive a response. The best advice GCNews can give to unhappy Telstra mobile phone users is to contact the Sunshine Coast Area Manager of Telstra Country Wide – Kris Carver. His email address is sctcw@ team.telstra.com, and the phone number listed is 1800 687 829. Or if you’re in Maroochydore, you could pop in and see him personally – their office is in the Ground Floor, 43 Plaza Parade, Maroochydore (opposite Officeworks).
Fresh NEW Class in Oz! BOX I SCULPT I DANCE
The challenging conditions meant riders needed skill and focus plus a fair bit of good luck to get down the hill in one piece. It has been an eventful year for Max with injuries hampering his progress and fitness. In January at the second National Round of the Series held in Thredbo, he broke his left hand and needed stitches in his right, still managing to place third in the event. Since returning to competition, he has collected another 30 or so stitches along the way but it hasn’t dampened his enthusiasm or slowed him down. Max would like to acknowledge the continuing support of his sponsors: Erek from Beerwah Cycles, (who first noticed Max when he was 10-years-old, competing in Under 15s and has been helping him ever since) Damien from Off the Brakes, Steve from Downhill from Here Mountain Bike Club, Podium Lube and Chunked. Max also competed at the Queensland Championships over the weekend at Mount Joyce and came first in the Elite division.

Laree’s International success By Lea Parkes In June we brought you the story about former Glenview local and Beerwah High student Laree Gadenne who was heading to Hollywood to participate in the World Championships of Performing Arts. Laree said being a member of Team Australia was the most incredible experience. Meeting other performers from over 50 other countries and making lifelong friends is something I will remember for the rest of my life, she said. Not only did Laree have an amazing time – she brought home plenty of medals including a Gold medal in Hip Hop, Silver in Lyrical, Silver medal in Jazz, Silver in Salsa / Ballroom. Silver in Musical Theatre, Silver in Open / mix of different dancers, Silver in Acting ([Drama] and Silver in Photography Modelling. Laree is also over the moon to be one of four dancers to win a 12-month scholarship at the Millennium Dance Studio in Hollywood, the scholarships are worth around $40,000 – and with three going to Australian Dancers, they must have been impressed with the quality of the Aussie dancers. “America is the best place to train and the people that work at the Millennium Dance Studio are some of the best chorographers in the world, which makes it such an amazing opportunity,” Laree said. “Hopefully while I am completing my scholarship at the Millennium Dance Studio next year I will also be able to compete again.
Moved by the recent devastating fire which took the home and possessions of the Cannon family from Glass House Mountains, the Beerwah Hotel Social Club showed just what a caring community we are here in Glasshouse Country.
Laree in action at the world championships “So by then, with such fabulous training available through the scholarship I will turn my Silver medals all into Gold medals. “As I won a Silver medal for Acting in Drama I was offered a second chance to audition for a two-year scholarship to the New York film and Acting Academy. However, my first love is dance and by completing this scholarship will ensure that I am able to come back to Australia, not only as a top dance teacher to pass onto students what I've learned, but I’ll also receive full training in voice and music." she said. “I would really like to thank everyone for your wonderful support in following my progress and also with fundraising,” she said. Laree plans to head back home over the Christmas holidays to hold some dance workshops or perform with her Dance Crew Karizmatik before heading to America to take her prized scholarship.
Night lights and running tights Strange lights were seen recently during the night around Wild Horse Mountain, possibly leading some to believe they were witnessing a ‘close encounter’. However Glass House Mountains local Brett Standring, co-founder of Run Queensland, says the explanation is more athletic than alien. “We had 150 people with head lamps and lights participate in our inaugural Wild Horse at Night running event – which was a great result,” he said. “The event went really well with nothing but positive feedback from all concerned. “The atmosphere was vibrant and bustling from the start and was maintained through the event. Most competitors were from the south east corner, with some coming from as far away as Bundaberg along with some interstate runners. The youngest entrant was 12-years-old and the oldest 67. “We received many comments from first time night runners, saying how exhilarating it was to be out in the bush with nothing but a headlamp and their fellow runners for company. “Many said they’d like to see regular night runs in the bush or maybe a series. With this in mind, we’ve already started planning another similar event, most likely in November,” said Brett. Their next confirmed event is on Easter Sunday, the Wild Horse Criteirum (which will be in its fifth year) and they are in the planning stages of an Australia Day marathon in the area, the details of which will be finalised soon. Details on Run Queensland can be found on the website www.runqueensland.com Leonnie Tognoni (race winner) and Leanne Field

Community heart beats in Beerwah
With the great support of the Beerwah Hotel, the social club raised money by selling raffle tickets on a Saturday, and they decided to give Jason and Amanda Cannon a $500.00 Coles Myer voucher to assist the family get back on their feet. Club member Andre Zakis said that the entire point of the social club is to donate to local people and groups who are in need of assistance. “We’ve raised money for Beerwah Rural Firies, Leukaemia Foundation and others through raffles and social activities like barefoot bowls, fishing trips and golf days,” he said. The Beerwah Hotel Social Club membership is only $25.00 – payable at the hotel – and then you can join in with the club in their fantastic (and fun) community fund raising activities.

Australia Zoo’s Sumatran tiger, Kaitlyn, has safely delivered two critically endangered healthy tiger cubs last Thursday night - the first tiger cubs to be born at Australia Zoo in its 43 year history. After going into labour at 11.00am last Thursday, she delivered the first tiger cub at 5.07pm and the second at 5.39pm. At this stage we can’t confirm if they are male or female.
Both Kaitlyn and her cubs are healthy and doing well, according to Australia Zoo head tiger supervisor Giles Clark. “We’re so pleased with how well the birth went. Kaitlyn is a fantastic first time mum,” Giles said. “The cubs will spend the next few weeks bonding with mum. This will also ensure the cubs get the colostrum (first milk) and a head start while they are so small,” Giles said. After this, Giles will take over as mum, doing all the duties from feeding to toileting. “At this time, the strong bonds are formed between handlers and cubs to allow us to interact with the tigers for their entire life and provide the long term enrichment of walks and experiences outside of their enclosures,” Giles said. Visitors to Australia Zoo will have the opportunity to see the cubs in late October.

They will receive their $10,000 citations at the 2013 Australian Awards for University Teaching at Brisbane’s Gallery of Modern Art on September 24. USC Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Birgit Lohmann said OLT citations distinguished Australia’s most inspiring academic and professional staff whose teaching contributions had enriched student learning for a sustained period. A message from Peter Slipper It is a great privilege to serve as your local representative in Federal Parliament. Fisher is an extremely diverse electorate – and I aim to work diligently to ensure your voice is heard loud and clear. Earlier this month I nominated to re-contest my role as Member for Fisher at the upcoming September 7 Federal Election. I trust that with your support, I can continue to serve you and your family, your business and your lifestyle in this wonderful region of the Sunshine Coast. I’ve also made note of some of the funding achievements I have undertaken over the past 12 months, and in my time as the Member for Fisher. If your organisation has any questions about how I can assist them in reaching their full potential, please don’t hesitate to contact my office. As constituents of this life changing region, it is important we work together. And that is what I am here to help us do. The issues outlined in this newsletter (and more) are all equally important to me and I will continue to work hard to make this a reality. So if you have any questions, or require any assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact my office on 5444 4888 or via email Peter.Slipper. MP@aph.gov.au

The time to upgrade the Bruce Highway is NOW! There remains an urgent need to upgrade the Bruce Highway from Caboolture to the Sunshine Coast and increase it from four lanes to six lanes. It is good news to see the major parties sitting up and taking notice finally of the dire need to upgrade the Bruce Highway. You can see snippets from some of my speeches over the last few years about the urgent need to upgrade the Bruce to six lanes all the way from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast. I have lobbied the Infrastructure Ministers over the years for this as it has been so damaging to our regional economy. I would be happy to support either of the major parties policies on this very important piece of infrastructure. I just want them to get on with it. I voted against the Carbon Tax I am on record in the Australian Parliament as voting against the group of bills in relation to the carbon tax. This is what the majority of Fisher constituents have asked me to do. The following is a part transcript from my speech in Federal Parliament. Wednesday, September 21 2011 Mr Slipper (Fisher – Deputy Speaker) (12:18): I am pleased to have the opportunity to participate in this debate on this group of bills in relation to the carbon tax. It will not be a matter of surprise for other honourable members to know that my constituents on the Sunshine Coast do not want me to support these bills. In this parliament I will be voting against these bills for the reason that I do not believe that they are good for our economy or our nation.

Beerwah Walkers
Community News Farewell to Brother John Stevenson Contributed by Ted Prickett Forty members of the Glasshouse Country Anglican Church Community attended a farewell luncheon in honour of Deacon Brother John Stevenson who is leaving the Caloundra and Glasshouse Parish
after a much appreciated ministry. His great sermons, friendship, love, and care for the members of the church will be sorely missed by all.
The Beerwah Walkers are still walking at 6.30am and recently enjoyed an early morning walk around the base of Mount Tibrogagan, which takes about an hour. They then had a welcome cuppa at the picnic table in the car park, as the photo shows. New walkers are always welcome; the Beerwah Walkers are part of the Heart Foundations Walking Group. To find out more about the group, contact walk’s organiser Frank Cockram on 5494 0709.

Lifeline seeking Telephone Crisis Supporters The Lifeline Crisis Support Program on the Sunshine Coast are currently recruiting those interested in completing the Telephone Crisis Supporter training course with the view to becoming someone who can help callers dealing with stressful circumstances and other factors that can lead to a crisis. Lifeline’s Telephone Crisis Supporters are the glue that holds Lifeline’s 13 11 14 Telephone Crisis Line together by answering calls 365 days a year 24 hours a day. This six week course starts on September 17 and runs through to the end of November. An information session will be held on Saturday September 7 from 3.00pm – 5.00pm at the UnitingCare Community office at 37 Duporth Avenue, Maroochydore. Susan Griffith Lifeline Telephone Crisis Support Trainer says the six week course has a very practical approach with the theory being
completed online outside of the face-to-face course sessions. The actual course sessions focus on very practical work which will give students a simulated insight into what they can actually expect and how they will respond to real callers. If you are interested in supporting your community and are inspired to help others overcome difficult times in their lives, please contact Vedaste at the Learning Centre on 3250 1965 or visit www.uccommunity.org.au/ telephone-crisis-support-training for information and applications on the Telephone Crisis Supporter Course. Bookings are essential and can be made by phoning 3250 1965. All applications must be submitted by September 9 and application forms are also available from 37 Duporth Avenue, Maroochydore.

We Can Do!
Business feature
That is the proud motto of the team at Precise Contracting. Caboolture locals, and family business owners Stephen and Kathy Marsh are excited to be moving their business head office to Beerburrum. With local ties going back many years they have always loved this area, and are pleased to be able to find their place among the mountains. Steve has built a wealth of building and demolition knowledge and experience over the years, which resulted in starting Precise Contracting six years ago with his wife, Kathy. With a family background in building, Steve decided he wanted to offer a quality service to the highest of standards. This vision has made their name as the demolition and asbestos removal specialists throughout Queensland. And with Kathy’s family history in the legal profession they have worked together to provide a service which fully understands the licensing and legal side of regulation and compliance in the industry.
As members of Demolishers, Recyclers & Asbestos Contractors Association of Queensland Inc. (DRACAQ), they follow the guidelines which include the promotion of safe work practices for the demolition and asbestos removal industries. They encourage minimisation of unnecessary landfilling through increased recycling of valuable resources and materials resulting from deconstruction activities. As they also own the New and Recycled Timber and Building Supplies at Pomona it means their work comes full circle, and they are able to reduce, recycle and reuse the waste. A recent addition to the team is manager Allan Boardman, who brings with him over 38 years’ experience in a wide range across the building, demolition, and asbestos removal industry. Having known Steve and Kathy for over 20 years, Allan complements both of their skills with a smooth ability to supervise, problem solve and keep to deadline on each project.
His personal mission statement is to always ‘understand and surpass our client’s expectations with every task. Whether a single sheet removal and replacement, or larger jobs like the Airlie Beach Hotel, the high standard of work and attention to detail stays the same.’ Allan encourages GCNews readers to pop in and say hello, to see what they can do to help your renovation ideas or demolition plans. They are located in the big blue building next door to Beerburrum post office and Aranisari on Beerburrum Road, or call 0488 666 421.

Boldly going where no student has gone before Book Week at Glasshouse Country Christian College had a space theme this year. Students could still dress up as any book character but the theme was extended to include space and the universe. The children embraced the theme and there were so many Milky Way and Mars Bars pinned to costumes that the local shops must have run dry. This year there were less Where’s Wallies and Dr Seuss and more Buzz Lightyears and Dr Spoks. All the Disney princesses were well represented along with every super hero known to man. The Primary staff threw themselves into the occasion and many got their heads together to come as themes. Prep teachers came as the characters from Alice in Wonderland, Library staff came as different Vicki Childs took out the prize parts of the universe, Year 1 came as the for the best dressed Teacher Aide and she stayed in character nursery rhyme ‘Hey Diddle Diddle’ and Year 3M came as the Magic School Bus. all day pouring cups of tea Some students had sci-fi novels, others had action books but Joshua Bull from Year 6 chose the GCCC Yearbook and he dressed up as the main character, Principal Mike Curtis!

Independent Speaker
Advertisement
The former Speaker of the House of Representatives and Member for Fisher, Peter Slipper has announced that he will recontest his seat of Fisher at the September 7 Federal election. I have been considering my position for some time and following many approaches from local residents, I have decided to nominate to provide local people with a real choice. It is a great privilege to be chosen to represent the people of Fisher on eight occasions so far and I feel humbled by the support I am receiving. I am aware of the enormous challenge facing me as this is a ‘David and Goliath’ battle against the major parties. This will be our most difficult campaign ever. As an Independent Speaker in the Westminster tradition I introduced reforms to the operation of the House of Representatives as I wanted to make the Australian Parliament an institution of which the Australian people could be truly proud. Unfortunately the Ashbygate affair in which the Liberal National Party candidate Mal Brough and other LNP and Liberal figures were deeply involved, has prevented me to date from completing the reform process. This is despite the vindication I received when Justice Rares of the Federal Court threw out Ashby’s case as an abuse of process. I note Mal Brough, unlike some others adversely mentioned by the Judge, did not seek leave to appeal the adverse findings against him by the Court. I am proud of the many achievements I have secured for Fisher including recently the $46.8 million for the Sunshine Coast Health and Social Wellbeing Learning Precinct, one of the biggest projects to be announced on the Sunshine Coast, Bruce Highway upgrades as well as improvements to help develop the Sunshine Coast Regional Tennis Centre at Caloundra. I want to make it clear that I am totally opposed to the plans by the LNP to sell off the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital to private interests. There is much more to be done on the Sunshine Coast, particularly in the area of infrastructure, and I look forward to continuing to provide effective local representation. Anyone who would like to assist in my campaign should contact my office via peter.slipper.mp@aph.gov.au or phone 5444 4888.

2013 Federal Election Following on from the Meet the Candidates night held at the Landsborough Sports and Recreation Club last Wednesday, GCNews gathered some questions from our readers and have put them to all the candidates. On the following three pages are their responses. The questions are located at the top of each page for easy reference. We’ve also included some information on where and how to vote and some background to the electorate of Fisher. All the candidates were given the opportunity to submit their answers to the questions. If a candidate does not appear, it means that they did not contribute anything by our print deadline. Candidates were also offered the opportunity to submit longer responses which we have placed on our website – www.gcnews.com.au – just go to the ‘Read tab’ and select ‘Hot Off The Press’ to find their longer responses. Again, if a response isn’t there from a candidate, it means they haven’t contributed by the required deadline.

Guide to voting
Voting in the coming federal election is compulsory for everyone who is enrolled to vote, so below is a guide to where and how to vote. Before Election Day – September 7 – you can vote at an early voting centre or AEC office. In Fisher, these are located at 87 Bulcock Street, Caloundra; Life Church, 6 Kawana Island Boulevard, Warana; Millwell Road Community Centre, Millwell Road, Maroochydore; 3/54 Baden Powell Street, Maroochydore. You can also make a postal vote, but you will need to apply to receive the postal voting ballot. You can do this online at www.aec.gov.au or collect an application form from a post office or from the AEC office at 3/54 Baden Powell Street, Maroochydore (phone 13 23 26). On Election Day – September 7 – polling booths open at 8.00am and close at 6.00pm. If you’re not in the local area, you can vote at any polling booth in Queensland (called absentee voting). If you’ll be interstate – check with the AEC for interstate polling centres (13 23 26). Locally, polling booths will be at Glenview, Mooloolah, Landsborough, and Peachester State Schools, Beerwah High School, Glass House Mountains Community Hall and the Beerburrum School of Arts Hall. You will receive two ballot papers – a green one for the seat of Fisher in the House of Representatives and a much larger white one for the Senate. On the green ballot paper you will need to number all the 10 boxes in order of your preferred
Question 1 – The current Government is in the process of implementing major reforms of the aged care system, including fees and charges for both residential and home care. What is your position on these reforms and what changes, if any, would you make to the current proposals?
candidates. Only numbers are allowed (1 – 10) no ticks, crosses, words or repeated numbers. If you make a mistake, it’s best to ask for a new ballot form than crossing something out. On the white Senate ballot, you can vote two ways – above the line or below the line. The ballot paper will explain all of this, or ask one of the polling officials. Voting above the line means you only have to indicate your preference with a ‘1’ in the box of your choice. Voting below the line means you number every box starting from ‘1’ against the candidate of your choice, and then continue sequential numbering through all the boxes. The choice of who you wish to vote for is purely your decision. At the polling booth, people will be handing out ‘how to vote’ cards. These are merely their suggested voting preferences – no one has to follow what the ‘how to vote’ cards suggest. And don’t feel pressured into taking them if you don’t want them. Also, those handing them out are just volunteers, supporters and family – so please show them some common courtesy. Don’t be rude to them, blame them, abuse them or harass them. If one of them is discourteous to you, report it to a polling official for them to handle. You may take the ‘how to vote’ cards into the polling booth to assist your decision making. Afterwards, it’s always a good idea to hand them back the people who gave them to you so they can reuse them, or you can leave them in the location marked at the polling booth.
Question 2 – Do you believe that man-made climate change is real and having a significant effect on Australia’s climate, and what efforts do you support to reverse those impacts?

Party: Katter’s Australian Party Email: meldonforfisher@gmail.com Phone: 0411 063 686
Question 1 and 2 – Palmer United has a positive policy to turbo-charge the Australian economy to fund solutions to issues including aged care and climate change. We will: • Release $70 billion into the Australian economy by having tax paid annually not prepaid quarterly. $70 billion remains in the economy for a year, creating confidence, strong domestic demand and jobs. The $70 billion only has to turn over once in individual's hands to create $7 billion of GST alone, so it will also create more revenue and mean we can have more facilities, schools and hospitals. • From July 1 2014 we will reduce income tax by 15% putting $2,500 in the average taxpayer's pocket. As the money circulates in the economy the government will get 10% GST. If it circulates 10 times in a year the government will get back the same amount of tax anyway, but this will impact positively on our economy. Every time you spend, it will create more jobs and more demand. We can spend our money better than the government can. • Palmer United will abolish fringe benefits tax (FBT), injecting $4 billion into the economy. • Palmer United will make the first $10,000 of every home loan tax deductible, boosting the construction industry, home ownership and helping every Australian to own their own home. • We will increase the old age pension by 20% and give every pensioner an additional $150.00 a fortnight of living wage. • Palmer United will inject $80 billion into the health budget across Australia so that people can age and die in dignity and we have the right services for our families. • We will cut tax on the second job to 50% of what's paid at the moment to get the economy going again.
Question 1 Centralising policy and funding responsibility on a more equitable basis is an initial and positive step in addressing the issue of a rapidly ageing population. The issue of fees is sensitive and based on an individual’s personal circumstances. The question here should be how to lessen fees through a more equitable tax system. The PAYG tax payer is stretched and simply middle Australia cannot afford more. Some in the corporate sector dilute profits and hence tax contribution due to off shoring of profits and ability to engage in tax minimisation strategy. The issue of caring for the carers needs much greater attention as their contribution to the health system is unrecognised and not valued. The current (new) reforms should be subject to rolling bi-annual review and policy adjusted on a bi-partisan basis without delay. We need to respect, care and look after our elderly without question. By 2050 we will have 2.7 working taxpayers for every person over the age of 65 years, today it is 5. The tax systems needs fixing to look after our elderly. Question 2 Currently 97% of published scientific papers support the view human activity is warming the climate largely through the extraction of fossil fuels. Global atmospheric carbon dioxide levels are now higher than at any time during the last three million years. Constraints on omissions should be put and remain in place. New power generation infrastructure such as solar and wind energy systems need to be developed further to reduce cost and then commissioned to replace coal and gas. In the interim, we need to focus on provision of cleanest possible fossil fuels to meet both current demand and the best possible economic outcome for Australia.

Question 1 – The current Government is in the process of implementing major reforms of the aged care system, including fees and charges for both residential and home care. What is your position on these reforms and what changes, if any, would you make to the current proposals?
Electoral Division of Fisher
As the September 7 federal election closes in, it may be prudent to learn a little more about the division of Fisher in which we live. The Glasshouse Country region is wholly within the federal electoral division of Fisher. The electorate was named after Andrew Fisher (1862–1928), who served as the Prime Minister of Australia on three separate occasions – in 190809, 1910-13 and 1914-15 – and is the second longest serving Prime Minister behind Bob Hawke. Fisher covers an area of 1,170 square kilometres from Alexandra Headland, west to Cambroon and Conondale, south to Beerburrum and east to the Pumicestone Passage. For most of its history, the seat has been held by Country / National / Liberal Party conservatives. Firstly, Charles Adermann held the seat for 23 years (1949-72) and then his son Evan Adermann (1972-84) – meaning that the Adermann family dynasty lasted for 35 years. In 1984, Peter Slipper, representing the National Party first won the seat. Peter held Fisher for one term, with the 1987 election won by Michael Lavarch (Australian Labour Party). However, in 1993 Peter Slipper, then a member of the Liberal Party, won back the seat after a redistribution following the formation of the new adjoining electorate of Dickson (which Michael Lavarch chose to contest rather than Fisher). Peter Slipper then held the seat as a Liberal until 2011 when he resigned from the Liberal Party, becoming an Independent. At the last election in 2010, the two party preferred results showed the Liberal National Party holding a 54.1% to 45.9% lead over the Australian Labor Party. In this coming election, there are 10 candidates contesting for the seat of Fisher – which isn’t so bad considering the seat of Melbourne has 16 candidates lining up. The surrounding electorates are Fairfax (held by Alex Somlyay LNP, retiring) and Longman (held by Wyatt Roy LNP).
Question 2 – Do you believe that man-made climate change is real and having a significant effect on Australia’s climate, and what efforts do you support to reverse those impacts?
Peter Slipper MP Party: Independent Email: peter.slipper.mp@aph.gov.au Phone: 5444 4888 Question 1 The Bills have passed through the parliament and are now law, however while they are an attempt to update our aged care system as part of a 10 year plan, flaws remain in the legislation which I would want to discuss with local aged care providers and the community. The package fails to reduce red tape and does not implement all of the recommendations of the Productivity Commission. The real detail is in the delegated legislation which I would like to discuss with stakeholders. Concern has been expressed to me about the workplace supplement and the ability of providers to afford wage rises. Question 2 While climate has always been changing and scientists differ on the reasons, I consider it is important in the interests of the environment to act on the basis that ‘man-made climate change is real and having a significant impact on Australia’s climate’. It should be remembered however that Australia is responsible for only a small proportion of the World’s emissions and while it is important we play our part as a good world citizen, this is a problem created by countries throughout the world. All countries including heavy emitters like China and India should contribute to a world solution. While I oppose the carbon tax, it is important we invest in a range of options including renewable energies and direct action to reduce Australia’s emissions. Unilateral action like a carbon tax puts up prices and can export jobs to other countries without our stringent rules.

Question 1 It is clear that too many clinical staff are spending too much time filling out forms for bureaucracy. Given the administrative burden faced by providers, the perfect completion of paperwork required by the Commonwealth seems to be a higher priority than the care and attention of older Australians. The sector is overburdened by government red-tape. The Coalition is committed to removing as much as possible and practical without any deterioration of the quality and capacity of the services. Also, facilities with 50 beds or less will be worse off financially and some may be forced to close or amalgamate. The Living Longer Living Better package inadequately addresses the specific needs in rural and regional areas for continuity of care within the community, recognising the financial reality of lower incomes and asset levels, the higher importance of access to home care and the acknowledged greater service delivery costs in those areas. Question 2 The Coalition recognises that the world is warming, and that humans are having an impact on that warming. There is bipartisan support in Australia for the science of climate change. There is bipartisan support for the target of cutting emissions by 5 % by 2020 on an unconditional basis. While there is agreement on the science and the targets, we do not want to misuse the need for action as an excuse for a tax on electricity, petrol, gas and groceries. Put simply, you don’t need a carbon tax to take action on climate change. We will repeal the carbon tax to ease cost of living pressures on families, help small business and restore confidence to the economy. Our Direct Action Plan will reduce emissions by: creating a fund to buy back greenhouse emissions; more tree planting; better soils; and smarter technology.
Question 1 Major parties always take from those who can least afford it. Governments shouldn't be picking winners and losers; however it's obvious the losers are our aged care system, already under immense pressure due to economic forces. As far as I'm concerned, there would be no proposal and if elected I will make the case loud and clear that the minimal funds this generates doesn't equal the unintended consequences. The responsible way to acquire tax revenue and pay down the debt is not to extract from our seniors, pensioners, retirees, super recipients, or the disabled, but to embrace the vision and plan of our young people. We need new forward thinking models, products, services and policies that build upon our parents and grandparents legacy. Can our young people deliver this new plan? ‘Yes Youth Can’. Question 2 Major parties think the reduction of carbon emissions over the last few years is great, but for the rest of us (aka the majority) it knocks us for six and the only option available is to not use electrical appliances. The answer's not putting up electricity prices, we need to phase out coal and bring in decentralised clean and renewable energy generators in the form of more public transport options using natural gas and clean electricity. This will take a plan. ‘I Have A Plan’ to greatly reduce the cost of living by creating full time long term employment, relieving pressure off government having to reduce vital services and making cuts. I will do this via manufacturing clean and renewable energy generators emphasising recycling and its many multipliers and supply chains which will enhance the building and construction sectors simultaneously addressing aging infrastructure and clean transport needs today. Can our young people deliver on this new plan? ‘Yes Youth Can’.

Question 1 Australian Independents are against the elderly being financially crippled by having fees and charges for residential and in-homes services imposed on them. Australian Independents will fight, in parliament, for the rights of seniors not to have to pay fees for services and support, to which they are clearly entitled and deserve. Australian Independents are for publicly funded, world-class aged care facilities and publicly funded home modifications for the elderly who choose to age gracefully in their own homes. Australian Independents will increase the Carer’s Pension to $1,000 per week, and provide significantly more support and respite to families who choose to care for elderly relatives. Question 2 Australian Independents believe in genuine representation. Australian Independents, by virtue of our constitution, must shelve our own views and opinions and fight for what our constituents believe, want and need. The majority of my constituents believe in man-made climate change and are concerned about pollution. Therefore, it’s my role to address this issue. The majority of constituents in Fisher are against the carbon tax, so I cannot support the carbon tax; However, my electorate is for an Emissions Trading Scheme, with a floating price; therefore, this is the policy I support. Australian Independents are for investment in renewable energy, recycling programs, investment in public transport, prevention of bush fires and tree planting.
Question 1 I am a baby boomer so age care is important to me. I would like to have it all provided free. However, we need also to be realistic. By 2020, 3.5 million will be using age care services, 25% of the population will be over 65 by 2056 and by 2033 - 500,000 will be affected by Dementia. How then do we afford to provide quality care to our aging population? The Government's reforms should deliver positive change but still more work is required. My wife worked in age care for many years. She constantly remarked that the paper work demanded of the staff takes them away from providing care for the residents. She would also say that there needed to be a professional training program for all staff working in age care regardless of their position. The family home should be taken completely out of the equation. Why punish those who have scraped and saved, gone without and not been a burden on public housing? Question 2 We at Rise Up Australia believe in ‘climate change’ – for thousands of years the climate has been changing and it will continue to change; the notion that anthropogenic emissions of the plant-food carbon dioxide have affected, or will affect, the macro-climatic changes that would have occurred anyway as part of nature (e.g. volcanoes, solar variations etc) is a quasi-religious hypothesis unproven by objective scientific facts. Computer modelling always involves subjectivity and should not be used as the sole basis for policies. Why do we now constantly hear the term ‘climate change’ and not ‘global warming’? Where is the evidence, of the predictions given by the then ‘experts’ on global warming, of substantial sea level rise? Even the insurance companies no longer have faith in the maps previously published showing the sea engulfing our coastal cities.

Question 1 I am in the process of helping my father move into assisted care from his home interstate so I have been intimately associated with the process over the last few months. The Living Longer Living Better reforms are a result of an extensive consultation process and I support the direction they take. Like all major change initiatives, there will be some issues to be resolved. For that reason, I strongly recommend that we ensure that all people who are affected by the process are actively informed of the impending changes. Question 2 Regarding climate change, there are two indisputable facts. First, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere acts as a greenhouse gas. The second – the concentration of greenhouse gases is increasing. For us to wilfully ignore these facts is to consign future generations to an unknown set of possibilities. It is almost impossible to prove categorically that human activities have a direct causal link to an increase in the concentration of CO2; however that is scarcely a reason to pretend it’s not occurring. Given that, I believe that it is extremely irresponsible to run away from the risks posed by climate change, the debate needs to focus on how we can move to sustainable energy sources. There are also many other benefits in doing so, financial and cultural. The trick is to maintain our standard of living during the transition. I want the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland to be recognised as the crucible for imaginative and innovative possibilities for sustainable energy generation. We have the education and research facilities, we have the people and we have the will. Let’s do trials with solar panels for individuals and group living facilities. Let’s develop financing based on the capital saved by not building power stations. Let’s use the sunshine of the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland!
Question 1 As a civil society we need to show compassion in how we treat all members of our society, and, in particular, how we support our elderly. The success of the Living Longer, Living Better reform process will rely on our Government taking additional steps in coming years, and working towards implementing more of the Productivity Commission's recommendations. The Greens have worked hard on aged care reforms and will continue to work hard with older Australians, aged care providers and staff to ensure these reforms are as effective as possible. Dementia care is another which needs to be addressed urgently. There must be a commitment from all parties to improve access to support services, provide better quality care, early diagnosis, and improved research and development. The Greens wish to help older jobseekers back into work, make dental care more accessible, and create more affordable housing. The Greens believe that all Australians deserve access to quality care, irrespective of their personal circumstances. Question 2 As a scientist, I understand the concepts of climate change and appreciate the magnitude of the problems facing future generations. I know we are contributing to the accumulation of greenhouse gasses by adding emissions from fossil fuel use and by land-use changes. We have been experiencing some early signs of changes to our climate and weather patterns. Warmer oceans have been contributing to growing intensity of weather events. To reverse the adverse effects, we need to Cease the human contribution to accumulation of greenhouse gasses and shift to renewable energy and modify our land-use to increase CO2 absorption. To achieve these actions we need to use a number of methods, including an Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), direct action, such as reforestation, no new coal mines, and renewable energy infrastructure development.

Thanks to young people
I often hear about lack of care or interest by younger people so I wish to share my thanks to several young couples who stopped to offer assistance to my wife and I when we were broken down on the Kilcoy-Peachester Road last Friday. Our vehicle, with caravan attached, had broken down and stuck partly on the busy road as I could not move it. My wife and I were very thankful to several young couples, in vehicles, and two motorcycle riders who kindly stopped to check if we were ok. We had already contacted RACQ so the situation was well in hand. Nevertheless, I was extremely grateful to the other motorists who made the effort to break their own journey to offer assistance. Terry Titmarsh Beerwah
Australian Independents Senate candidate
I’m hoping that you’ll vote for me in the Senate. I’m often asked why I founded the Australian Independents party. I established the Australian Independents to give the community a voice, an opportunity for their concerns to be voiced in parliament. I wanted to set up a party that was different from all others and change our political landscape. Australian Independents is different. Australian Independents has ruled out personal attacks, outlawed bullying inside and outside of our party; in parliament, all politicians will be treated with respect, regardless of whether they honour us with the same level of courtesy. Australian Independents does not accept donations from corporations or unions. Why? We are for stamping out corruption in government. Australian Independents is the only party in Australia that demands of its politicians that they represent you, be a voice for you and fight for you in parliament. It is in our constitution that our politicians must put their own views, beliefs, policies to one side, and be a spokesperson for their electorates. In our party, it isn’t about us – it’s all about you. Australian Independents has listened to the Australian electorate. As a result, Australian Independents will support small business by cutting taxes, red tape and administration. Australian Independents won’t play politics. We will do what’s required and cut weekend penalty rates and create jobs to boost the Sunshine Coast economy. Australian Independents will pour significant investment into traineeships, apprenticeships, jobs, roads, public transport, all levels of education, health and aged care. There is one party Leader that is an Economist. There is one party Leader who has the required skills to gently guide the nation out of $400 Billion worth of debt. And that Leader is me. Please give me the chance to serve you. Thank you very much. Dr Patricia Petersen Leader – Australian Independents
The kindness of strangers
While shopping at Beerwah last Tuesday I was robbed of my money I’d just taken out of the Post Office Bank. While at the Newsagency my purse was taken with $800.00 in it and I hadn’t finished my shopping. I was devastated as I had no money at all. But I would like to thank those people who came to my aid; one from Woolworths gave $20.00 so I could have a cup of coffee and the kind people in the coffee shop wouldn’t take any money and gave me cup. The other kind people on our Taxi run gave me money to help me on my way. I would like to say a big thank you to all who came to my aid. Their support gave me the strength to keep going. A special thanks to a stranger who stayed with me until the police came and taxi came to take me home. (Thanks to Sharon and Steve for your care and to all who helped me out). Jean Short Landsborough
Janelle who co-ordinated it. We hear that some people are already planning their entry for next year! Also it was good to see such excellent entries in the Photography Competition, the Children's Colouring Competition, and thanks to the strawberry growers who kept the Super Strawberry contest going again this year. All these efforts leading up to the Charity Sports then depend on the people who participate on the day. It was marvellous to see so many entries in the traditional heart of the program, the horse events; and there was a great response to the Show & Shine, an amazing variety of stalls thanks to our partnership with the Coastal Village Markets, and lots of entertainment and fun for all ages. And thanks to all those people who came and volunteered their assistance on Saturday. Thank you Glasshouse Country! Over coming weeks we will publish the results of the major horse classes, Show & Shine, other events, competitions and raffles. And when the accounts are finalised we look forward to letting GCNews readers know the fundraising result for Cancer Council Queensland. Bruce Page Beerwah Charity Sports
Leave Ngungun as it is
I enjoy walking to the top of Ngungun once or twice a week and am very impressed with the work that has been done recently. In response to a letter published last week, I would like to ask that no barrier is erected at the top. At the start of the walk is a sign advising that the track is rated as a ‘class 4’ walk and lists the hazards and the presence of unfenced cliff edges. With this advice people and parents can make their own sensible decisions on whether it is suitable for them to undertake. The area around Glasshouse Mountains has many parks, walkways and natural attractions that would suit people who do not want to attempt a ‘class 4’ walk. In my opinion the walk, the surroundings and the untouched top of the mountain are just perfect. Let’s not try and make everything accident proof. Margaret Addison, Landsborough
Charity Sports Thanks
What a wonderful day on Saturday! The community turned out in force to support and enjoy the 42nd Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival. Chairman Bruce Page, on behalf of Committee members, wishes to say a big thank-you to the Glasshouse Country community: Thanks for such generous support from local businesses who sponsored the events, and to other community groups and the many people who helped run the stalls and sections of the program. There are too many to mention individually, but we want to assure you that your help was appreciated. It is a huge job setting up on Friday, managing the many aspects of the event on Saturday, and then cleaning up on Sunday. We greatly appreciate any help with those jobs which go on behind the scenes. The success of the sports day really depends on the response from the local community, and this year it was magnificent! We were delighted to see so many entries in our new Scarecrow competition, so thanks to all who participated in that, and a special thanks to Committee member

Letter re Alpha
Alpha is a non-pressurised, fun and informative course. It offers an opportunity to share your thoughts and explore the meaning of life through a Christian perspective. An Alpha Course will begin on September 1 under the guidance of the Anglican Church. Over 15 million people worldwide have attended a course since they started in 1977. As recently as 2008, over 33,500 courses were offered in 163 countries. They are for people who have questions about Christianity, but also for those who are already Christians. The course will be held in the Anglican Annexe at the Mary MacKillop Community Centre, Peachester Road Beerwah commencing at 4.00pm. Each session begins with a video presentation by Nicky Gumbel, who joined the staff in 1990, and is a charismatic and amusing speaker. This is followed by a discussion on what has been seen, and then by a shared supper finishing at about 7.00pm. There is no charge, although a donation to cover printed material is appreciated. For contact details and to find out more information see advertisement on page 12. My husband and I did the course earlier this year and would recommend it to anyone with questions about Christianity. Pam Innes Beerwah

NBN vital for businesses and people of Fisher
Advertisement
The NBN is to the 21st Century what the electric light and telephone were to the 20th Century. It will be a game changer for Sunshine Coast businesses and our communities dotted throughout the region! At the beginning of the year, I approached then Minister for Communications, Stephen Conroy about the possibility of rolling out the NBN earlier than proposed to the Sunshine Coast and in particular the electorate of Fisher. After a number of discussions with his office, I was thrilled to see my efforts were not in vain, when the Minister announced that the NBN would be rolled out earlier to the following areas in Fisher: Alexandra Headland, Birtinya, Bokarina, Buddina, Currimundi, Meridan Plains, Minyama, Mooloolaba, Kawana, Parrearra, Warana and Wurtulla. This is good news for Fisher. Other areas not in Fisher included Nambour, Mapleton and Mountain Creek. So a fair swag of earlier rollouts are coming to Fisher. I am also fighting to have the rollout of the NBN to the Hinterland areas brought forward. I am aware NBN Co. has not included Sippy Downs in their updated timing schedule for rollout. This is unfortunate. Overlooking this area doesn’t make any sense as it holds one of the key drivers of our region, the University of the Sunshine Coast along with several public and private schools and a town centre which is in the throes of being developed. This very important piece of infrastructure is critical to assist our businesses, to encourage people to invest in new forms of business here on the Coast and provide Peter Slipper talking to residents better connectivity for our communities. on local issues

Fisher hosts the Dalai Lama
Advertisement
I had great pleasure in delivering an invitation to His Holiness, the Dalai Lama, to visit the Sunshine Coast on behalf of the Chenrezig Institute located at Eudlo in my electorate in 2011. I was extremely pleased when His Holiness agreed to come to Chenrezig as his visits outside the large cities are quite rare. Thousands of people travelled especially to Chenrezig on that occasion both from the coast and wider afield for the privilege of listening to the words of compassion, forgiveness, tranquillity and peace for which His Holiness is so well known. The presence of such a well loved international figure here on the Sunshine Coast brought the attention of the world to the most wonderful part of the most wonderful state in the most wonderful country!

Kids & Parenting Don’t miss out Aussie World's limited time promotion 'Tiny Tots Ten Dollar Tuesday' started a few weeks ago and is proving very popular amongst parents looking for another option to keep their little ones active during the day. Here are the details:
Great sports day
Contributed by Tracey Blake On a glorious day under our beautiful mountains, students, staff, parents, family and friends of Glass House Mountains State School gathered to enjoy the annual Junior Sports Day. Students proudly displayed their colours and marching skills in the traditional march past and then the serious business of the day began with the rather cutely contested playgroup and toddler races. Students then ran, jumped, threw and jumped some more to earn points for their houses. Then it was their turn to clap cheer and ‘encourage’ as they voted for the best dressed supporters and enjoyed the parent races. At the end of the day, Coonowrin claimed the athletics trophy and Coochin will be adding their name to the Team Spirit trophy.

Ballet for the littlies
Dance Empire Sunshine Coast was formed in July 2012 and commenced with 90 students in classes at Bokarina, Maroochydore and Nambour. Our school has the exclusive license to the ‘Kinderballet’ program taught across Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Dance Empire owner Miranda Smith said they teach children from two years, however they do have students as young as 19 months in their very popular ‘Mummy and Me’ program which is booked out across the Sunshine Coast. Dance Empire has grown to have over 200 students and classes at Beerwah, Kawana Island, Bokarina, Maroochydore, Peregian Beach in 12 months. Kinderballet offers toddlers and pre-schoolers an opportunity to experience Classical Ballet through fun and creative theme classes. It is aimed at promoting Classical Ballet and instilling an appreciation of Ballet and dance in general. At the heart of Kinderballet is a new ballet program especially developed for pre-schoolers. Dance Empire also offers Tinies Jazz and Tap classes to children from three to five years and Junior Jazz and Tap for children five to eight years.

Jack’s a winner
Contributed by Friends of the Beerwah Library Six-month-old baby Jack Coker could hardly contain his excitement at winning the draw for his first book bag. With mum Danielle Rouillon to guide him, he is well on the way to literacy. Along with other mums and bubs, the two have been attending sessions on health and management for babies provided by Queensland Government Child Health Services. At this week’s session, Nicola Ketley of Beerwah Library gave the group an introduction to Baby Rhyme Time, an invaluable service to promote early literacy and share strategies with caregivers. Friend of Beerwah Library, Margaret Thompson showed the beautiful bags and age appropriate books available for purchase at the library. At $10.00 for a bag and a book, these are great value and funds raised are used to purchase items for our Library. For information about Child Health Services, call Kathy or Lisa for an appointment on 5436 8726.
with the Superdads My practical guide to daddy-ing Pete Spencer (Drummer for the Superdads) Being a dad has been particularly difficult for me as I am a really selfish blighter. Sharing life with my wife was one thing, but children demand your attention in so many ways. So when Kerry Lee (my wife) was sick with cancer I was forever on duty and therefore no free time for Pete. I didn’t cope so well. Kerry Lee, with her gentle wisdom, suggested that instead of coming home all tired and grumpy every day, I should take some time out and relax before entering the battlefield of child play. It was during one of these sessions, at a park whilst tormenting a friendly magpie I named Roger that inspiration struck. I now had a strategy that allowed me to be a better dad and still be selfish. Essentially, make playing with my children as amusing to myself as possible. So instead of another boring session of playing blocks with my toddler, I now played ‘Destructo Baby in the Land of Blocksville.’ Episodes of the Wiggles became mental calculations of how much caffeine I would need to consume to achieve the same level of perkiness. Games of hide-and-seek became opportunities to mess with my daughter’s mind without causing lasting damage. Notes from the Tooth Fairy blamed the economic crisis, global warming and Halley’s comet for the lack of funds to pay for the stricken tooth. As the years passed I developed a certain level of ‘cool’ amongst my oldest daughter’s friends simply by knowing the difference between an mmo, rpg and fps in the gaming universe. I share their wonder at anime characters that can suffer multiple sword wounds, massive blood loss and suddenly become stronger than their enemies. I’ve even had a go at Minecraft and Portal (I really want one of those turrets). I also have a fair understanding of my youngest daughter’s social interactions and can manipulate her to my will simply by skillfully tormenting her favourite stuffed toys. It hasn’t all been play for me. My girls have had to learn to respond to ‘I’m tired and cranky, give me some quiet time!’ and ‘because I said so.’ So dads, make play time fun. Mess with your kid’s heads, they’ll love you for it.
The Superdads – we are a bunch of guys who love playing music and have formed a band. Their name came from something their guitarist Pete said once… “I don’t just want to be an average dad, I want to be an exceptional dad” – the idea resonated with them. www.superdads.com.au www.gcnews.com.au

The Girls Ready 4 Life program strengthens self-awareness, mental and inner strength, as well as works to build a healthy self-esteem. The program assists girls in developing the key life skills they need to survive and flourish in today’s challenging world. The program is fun, interactive and inspiring (Years 3 - 6 and Years 7 - 8) incorporating games, activities, exercises and discussion topics to help strengthen girls’ bodies, minds and connection to their Inner Wisdom (Intuition). The Girls Ready 4 Life program incorporates elements from Rock and Water, a psychological-physical-social program, designed to develop self-awareness, practical anti-bullying strategies and to enhance positive communication. Studies show that physical exercise is linked with mental and social skills and the Rock and Water program begins with simple self-defence, personal boundary and communication exercises. Girls will learn how to apply the Rock and Water concept on a physical, mental and social level, by choosing between the tough, immovable ‘Rock’ attitude and the mobile, communicative ‘Water’ attitude. The Girls Ready 4 Life program focuses on increased self-control through grounding the body, centring power and focusing the mind as this creates body awareness, emotional awareness and ultimately self-awareness. Through body awareness and emotional awareness, girls are able to understand how emotions affect the body (muscular tension, high/low breath) and their patterns of reaction within situations. The aim is for girls to strengthen empathy and compassion whilst developing an understanding of the importance of verbal and non-verbal communication, including body language, setting and defending personal boundaries and intuition. In this way, girls gain a deep sense of self-love and self-respect, are better able to navigate through and conquer life’s challenges, as well as live with others within the world around them without losing their own individuality and personal path in life. Girls will learn to listen to and trust their intuition to guide them, make empowering decisions and live an inspired life. The program is facilitated by Tascia Maré, a registered teacher and accredited Rock and Water trainer. Tascia works closely with the girls to build a strong sense of self-love, consideration and respect for self and others, as well as a greater connection to and understanding of the world in which we live. She is passionate about supporting girls and women in re-connecting with their inner strength and inner wisdom so they can find balance across all areas of life, increase self-awareness and live with purpose. Be Proactive – Be Ready 4 Life.

Casting a line for feedback
In an effort to improve the sustainability of Queensland’s marine resources, the Newman Government is asking residents to provide information about recreational fishing. With over 700,000 recreational fishers in Queensland, the implementation of enhanced recreational fishing monitoring is essential to improving sustainability measures and safeguarding Queensland’s marine resources. The survey is designed to collect region specific information on where and how people fish, what they catch and the type of fishing experiences residents want in the future. The Sunshine Coast is one of 15 regions being surveyed across Queensland. Commencing this month, 13,000 randomly selected households across Queensland will be contacted by telephone and asked about their fishing experiences. Households that do fish will be asked to participate in a 12 month telephone diary survey. If you are contacted by interviewers, please help out by answering their short questionnaire. Further information about the survey can be found at www.daff.qld.gov.au/fisheries
Students encouraged to apply for Anzac Tour
Year 8 – 11 students are urged to apply for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel to Gallipoli and the Western Front. The 2014 Premier’s Anzac Prize offers students the chance to travel to Turkey to see the origins of the Anzacs firsthand as part of a study tour. To enter the competition, students need to create a two to five minute multimedia presentation discussing how the Anzac tradition has shaped our nation, why it is still important and how future generations can keep the tradition alive. Teachers with an interest in history and the Anzacs tradition can also apply to go as chaperones for the students and don’t need to be teachers of the winning students. Winners of the 2014 Anzac Prize will be announced before the end of this school year and entries close on Friday, September 20. It would be great to see the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland communities represented on this study tour. Further information can be found at www.education.qld.gov.au/anzac-prize Please do not hesitate to call the Caloundra Electorate office on 5491 2780 if you have queries about the above initiatives, or if you have something else you would like to discuss. Information provided by the Office of Mark McArdle (Member for Caloundra). Mark is on sick leave from July 25 to September 2.
State member for Glass House P: 5435 2013 Out and About
I spent some quality time out and about in the electorate recently, during which I held the last of my Queensland Plan information booths ahead of the closing date for survey submissions on August 30. Thanks to those people that came along to see me at Eudlo, Flaxton and Mt Mee and for taking the time to complete the survey and sharing your vision for Queensland. I also held one of my regular community morning tea catch ups, this time in Elimbah, and it was great to have the opportunity to address some community concerns over the future of our health and education. If you are a part of a community group and would like me to come along to a morning or afternoon tea you might be having to discuss state government issues, make sure you give the office a call on 5435 2013.
New funding grants open
Sport and recreation clubs throughout Queensland who want to improve their services and facilities should consider applying for funding through the recently announced Get Going and Get Playing grant programs. The initial response to these grants was so overwhelming that Get in the Game funding has been increased from $16 million over three years to almost $48 million. Get Going provides grants up to $10,000 for items and activities to assist clubs in attracting and retaining members and Get Playing provides grants up to $100,000 to sport and recreation organisations for facility development. For more information on Get in the Game, visit www.nprsr.qld.gov.au.
Prepare for Bushfire Season
As the warmer weather returns to Queensland it is time to start thinking about preparing for bushfire season. This kind of preparation is especially important for us in the Glass House region as we are surrounded by dense vegetation. Parts of northern Queensland have already experienced bushfire activity and southern parts of the state are drying out – a clear indication that we should all be finalising our bushfire preparations. Residents are encouraged to visit the Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) website, www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au and download a bushfire survival plan or call my office on 5435 2013 and one can be sent to you.

Mobile phone coverage in Fisher – Brough challenged While applauding the announcement that the Coalition will spend $100 million nationally to improve mobile phone coverage in regional areas, the Federal Member for Fisher, Peter Slipper, has queried how much of this money would be spent in Fisher. The LNP candidate Mal Brough has claimed that the $100 million commitment will improve mobile phone coverage in certain Hinterland areas. This is a problem on which I have been working with local communities, businesses and Telstra in the Beerwah / Glass House and Blackall Range areas for years. I have had numerous meetings with Telstra and concerned persons. Difficulties have been caused by both terrain and the economics of providing mobile phone coverage for a relatively small number of people. For instance Telstra told me that in the Conondale area it was not economic to install a tower as many locals using mobiles were connected to service providers other than Telstra, thus making it economically not viable to install a tower by Telstra. In 2013 in Australia I find it unacceptable that mobile phone coverage does not extend to every part of the continent. While the announced spending of $100 million is welcome, it is a drop in the ocean compared with what the cost would be to extend mobile phone coverage to the whole country. I challenge the LNP candidate to tell us how much of the $100 million will be spent in Fisher. I suspect almost nothing will be spent here.
Fisher, like the nation, needs better mobile phone coverage

M.R.W.L. Inc Plant of the Month Common Rush
Juncus usitatus This local sedge species is an extremely versatile plant; it is used extensively in wetland rehabilitation and can be an ideal addition to any dry creek bed landscape so covers a broad cross-section of eco-systems. Common Rush is classified as an emergent species which means that it can tolerate damp / dry and periodically wet areas. It can grow to a height of between 80cm to one metre, flowering in spring and summer with small yellowish tassel flower heads at the top end of the stems. It can tolerate full sun to partial shade, a wide range of soils, is frost tolerant, but for costal aspects it requires a protected area. Overall this is a fabulous plant that provides cover and food for animals that include frogs and nesting birds. Yabbies can also eat the tender young stems and shoots.

Unitywater and Australia Zoo have joined forces to feed sick and injured koalas at Australia Zoo’s wildlife hospital and others housed at the zoo on the Sunshine Coast. Unitywater has offered the zoo access to its Kenilworth Sewage Treatment Plant, where a large number of mature eucalypt trees provide a ready source of food for the fussy eaters. Australia Zoo staff have already begun harvesting the new-growth gum leaves favoured by koalas and will visit to site regularly to refresh supplies. Colin Haynes from Unitywater’s Treatment Plants Operations said Unitywater learned about the zoo’s search for more koala food through Australian Farm Forestry. “When Kenilworth Sewage Treatment Plant needed an upgrade about six years ago, Australian Farm Forestry met our needs with a two-hectare plantation of mixed species,” Mr Haynes said. “The plantation is an inexpensive and natural way to give a final polish to the treated water, taking out phosphorous and nitrogen. “The trees in the plantation were chosen because they are natives and it’s a happy coincidence that three of the species are prime koala food.” Australia Zoo curator Kelsey Engle said koala rehabilitation at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital is a long and expensive process, and finding reliable sources of food is one of their many challenges. “About 500 plantation trees are required to feed one koala for one year, so we are very thankful for the new harvests made possible by Unitywater,” Ms Engle said.

Looking for home loan savings? Looking for a way to save money on your home loan? No matter where you are on your home finance journey, there are steps you can take to make some big savings over the long haul! Find the right loan It all starts with finding the right home loan for you in the first place. One of the best ways to ensure you make the right decisions about home finance before you purchase a property is to seek the assistance of experienced mortgage brokers. Whereas on your own you may manage to do an in depth comparison of maybe half a dozen loan products, www.gcnews.com.au
brokers can do the same but for hundreds of mortgage options. Not only that, they can let you know which lenders may let you borrow more, tell you about limited-time deals being run by certain institutions and help you to understand all the costs of home finance. Change it up The quicker you pay your home loan off, the less interest you’ll pay in the long term. So it is quite simple: if you want to save money, pay your loan back quicker! For example, you could make extra lump sum repayments, boost
your regular mortgage payment, or increase the frequency of repayments. Mobilise all your troops You may want to consider whether a different type of mortgage structure, such as a 100 per cent offset loan and account, may be a good solution. This is when your bank account is linked to your home loan. That means that rather than having your savings or cheque account balances separate from your loan, these are all in together in the offset account. The great thing about this arrangement is that every cent you have will be working to reduce
your mortgage, not just the standard monthly loan repayment. And what’s more, the more you have in your account, the faster you pay your loan off - great motivation for financial discipline! Teresa Harrison Phone 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship
CATHOLIC WEEKEND MASSES
Chris Johnson Glasshouse Baptist Church The ‘accidental nature’ of archaeology means we will never find all the evidence of the people and places mentioned in the Bible, but we should also expect to find some evidence of the people / places mentioned. Below is a picture of an inscription that was found in Corinth, a Greek city not too far from Athens. In about 50AD it was a thriving city of about 500,000 plus people. There is modern Corinth as well as the Corinthian ruins. At the ruins in a place called the excavation dump archaeologists found this inscription. It says ‘Erastus donated or had constructed this plaza and he used his own money and not public money.’ Clearly this Erastus is a very wealthy and kind man. He did not want to be accused of misusing public funds and putting his name on it so he uses his own money to finance a public building.
It is very possible that this Erastus is the same Erastus that is mentioned in the Bible. In Romans 16:23 Paul writing from Corinth to the Church in Rome says … 'Erastus, the city treasurer, and our brother Quartus, greet you.’ It is very possible we have archaeological evidence of a wealthy person in the church of Corinth who is mentioned in the bible. We don’t expect to find such evidence from Jesus’s very first followers - they were the poor and their possessions were biodegradable. A generation later we find evidence of a follower who had the resources to build something that would last for over 2,000 years. This does not prove the bible is true but it does show us that it is consistent with what we would expect from a reliable document. So don’t be too quick to dismiss the bible as just a made up book – there is good evidence to suggest that it really is true.

The Beerwah Bulldogs have played themselves into a Grand Final on September 7 after grinding out a tough 22-14 victory over Minor Premiers Pomona-Cooran on Saturday. In a very different game to the previous semi final, the boys had to call on all their experience and skill to overcome the home team and will now get the weekend off to prepare for the decider. Our Women’s Team played Burleigh Heads at Burleigh on Saturday in the final round of the home and Beerwah Bulldogs player Scott Hirst in away season and went down 14-10 action against the Pomona – Cooran in a tough encounter and now look Cutters on Saturday forward to the Semi Final Series. Next Saturday afternoon at Beerwah will see some great footy action starting with two Girls Semi Finals between Beerwah and North Ipswich in the U15 and U18 age groups kicking off at 1.00pm. This will be followed by the Red Rooster Preliminary Final between Beachmere and Pomona-Cooran at 3.15pm and the Open Women’s Elimination Final between Beerwah and Logan Brothers at 5.00pm. The final game will be the Women’s Qualifying Final between Burleigh and Wests Inala at 6.30pm. The Bulldogs also have some junior teams competing in the first week of the Sunshine Coast Junior Rugby League Semi Finals so please look on the Club’s Facebook and Website pages for further details about game times and venues. Red Rooster C Grade Cup Beerwah 22 (Nathan Robbards 1, Ashley Sleeman 1, Graham Green 1, Josh Kidd 1 – Tries)( Ben Jones 3 – Goals) def Pomona-Cooran 14 (Cameron Nelson 1, Mitchell Pardon 2 – Tries)(Phil Anderson 1 – Goals)
This last week has seen a few great golfing opportunities. On Tuesday, we hosted a very successful Charity Invitation Day, sponsored by Glasshouse Country Pest Control. Over 100 Ladies travelled from near and far to compete in this very popular fun day. Results will be published next week, along with details of funds raised for our Beerwah Rural Fire Service. Thursday was another Saturday’s winner Jo Eccles receiving Invitation Day, this time the her trophy from Captain Lea Ladies invited the men to play in our Competition, 104 players competed in the 4Ball Best Ball mixed team event. The team of Margaret Zonca, Trevor Kamp, and John and Noelene Annakin combined well to take out the winner’s prize with a score of 153. Runners up were Jeff and Beth Butler and Bob and Andrea Campbell with a score of 149. Our very generous sponsors for this day were lady members, Marg Hunkin, Marg Goodger, Pat Chapman and Pat Plowman. The Club’s new outdoor patio area proved a lovely setting, on Saturday afternoon, for Jo Eccles to receive her winning trophy, kindly donated by lady member Betty Howe. Jo came in with a score of 72 nett in the stroke event, and was closely followed by Karen Kemp, who was runner up with a score of 73 nett. Pin shots went to J. Collinson on the 5th, N. Annakin on the 2nd and M. Goyder on 16th and 18th holes. Balls in the rundown went to 75 nett.

CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Perhaps a romantic attraction can turn into a power struggle, although see if you can enjoy the rapture of a rich emotional experience of love. Throw your conservative nature out the window and don’t hold on too tight to old boredom habits. Everyone wants a kiss and makeup. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 You will have the imagination this week to convince others to follow you. Mercury enters Scorpio at the end of the week for some time ahead, giving you shrewd insights for profession use and other’s secret motivations. Around August 26 auspicious rewards for hard work now. PISCES February 20 – March 20 To profit from current opportunities, be willing to step out of your comfort zone. A trip or other adventure might be on the horizon. With the Sun’s entry into cooperative Libra it shifts the course to stay adaptable and talk things out. Relationships shine with fabulous joy for you. ARIES March 21 – April 20 The last week of this month the home scene and your own emotional energies will be full of defences or insecurities. Some passions arouse mixed feelings creating irrational reactions. Some of you may not know whether to vote at the elections in Australia or where you stand now.
TAURUS April 21 – May 21 Focus now on duties and responsibilities as the planet Saturn is in Scorpio, opposite your sign, which means you are not to cling tenaciously to your opinions. Relationships now can be characterised as anything but luke warm. Passions are strong, maybe extreme and also with rivalry. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 The Sun enters the sign of Libra from August 22 and opens a new cycle of love, pleasure, and creativity for you. Libra works very well with your sign and then at the end of the week, Mercury enters Scorpio adding to your psychology rapport about how to handle hidden motivations. CANCER June 22 – July 22 The last week of this month sees the more elbow grease you put into any efforts the more productive the results. You are coming out of a fantasy zone and heading towards the fair minded Libran energy that brings a shift of love and pleasure into your home. Sensual fulfilment. LEO July 23 – August 22 Your social side opens up now as your communication is engaged in conversation with invitingly pleasant people and creative ideas. So the Sun moving into the birthdays of the Librans sends your passionate purpose sky high as well as wanting to accomplish what you believe in.

VIRGO August 23 – September 22 In the last week of this month comes the opportunity of a beautiful, enchanting Venus and Jupiter trine making the world look alive with possibility, love and richness. Venus and Mars trigger passions that arouse a lover’s fight or an amorous encounter. Others seek your skills. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 The birthdays of all Librans have started this month under good congenial stars. Your confidence rises and you become a real attention getter. A career opportunity could pay off big! Passions may blaze fiercely but are more likely to produce conflict than fulfilment. Fiscal fights. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 At the end of the month there is a high voltage Venus / Mars energy that can either stir passions, or quarrels. If you can make it to the ‘kiss and make up stage’ you will realise that you can’t live in romantic fantasy forever, but must return to reality for important reasons. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 Come the last week of August a heavenly Venus / Jupiter mixture is a bright light in even your darkest of tunnels. You will see wonderful things in everyone around you, as they see in you. Enjoy this gracious bounty, as you will end up in a long, loving, receiving line. Post midnight joy.

little blonde Irish wife went out and moved her car again. The next week they are again having breakfast, when the radio announcer says, "we are expecting 12 to 14 inches of snow today. You must park...."Just then there was a flash of lightning and the power went off. The good sweet little blonde Irish wife was very upset, and with a very worried look on her face she said, "I don't know what to do. Which side of the street do I need to park on so the snow ploughs can get through?" Then with love and understanding in his voice, the husband replied, "why don't you just leave the damn car in the garage this time." Hugh Jones, Beerwah

On a bitterly cold winter morning a husband and wife in Dublin were listening to the radio during breakfast. They heard the announcer say, "we are going to have eight to 10 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the even-numbered side of the street, so the snow ploughs can get through. So the good sweet little blonde Irish wife went out and moved her car. A week later while they are eating breakfast again, the radio announcer said, "we are expecting 10 to 12 inches of snow today. You must park your car on the odd-numbered side of the street, so the snow ploughs can get through. The good sweet
