Hi Everyone This week when you check out the advertising material placed into the paper you will find a very stylish Local Shopper Discount Deals booklet – you should take a look at the great bargains and make sure you keep it in a safe place. With the current tougher economic times, we know that local businesses have to work harder to keep people spending in their businesses and that local shoppers are being more careful with their spending and seeking out special buys and good deals. As a result, I was approached by Jim Dudley from Custom Curtains and Blinds who said, “I have seen this great advertising opportunity in another area and reckon it would work well here.” At that time we were in the middle of our office relocation and building renovations so while I knew he was onto something, we had to get a

number of other projects out of the way first. So here we are for the start of the new financial year with plenty of great deals for you to plan to use over the next three months. That’s right three months, so make sure you keep it until the end of September - and as you use your vouchers make sure you fill in the back so we can enter your purchase into the prize draw, which will see one lucky shopper taking home a $250.00 voucher from one of the participating businesses. Enjoy the savings and remember to keep a vibrant mix of local businesses in our area you need to support them with your regular spending.

Well, maybe not the original Roy Orbison, but if you go and see the Roy Orbison Tribute Show at Caloundra next month, starring talented Beerwah entertainer Athol Matcham, then you may be left wondering if Roy really is back. Athol has been in the entertainment industry since winning a talent show when he was just 21 and later joined a band. “I used to sing Roy Orbison songs when I was in a band in the ‘70’s,” Athol said. “People used to love it so much, I kept doing his songs. When he died I thought well, I might just concentrate on doing his songs. And from that I started getting recognised as Australia’s own Roy Orbison.” Athol said he loves Roy’s music, and he says the way he wrote songs appealed to him. “And the fact that my voice is very, very similar. I don’t have to put on any acts or anything to sing his songs, it’s just there and it sounds very much like himself.” The Tribute Show has been taken to most parts of Australia. “I’m really passionate about my show. I have a wonderful six piece band behind me and they make it sound all authentic as the originals - if you have to do Roy you have to do it well.” Athol admits fans expectations are high and he can tell the audience is waiting to see if he’ll reach those famous high notes. “It’s certainly nice when you see their faces saying ‘he did’.”

Beerwah entertainer Athol Matcham There have been many highlights over the years including being Queensland Entertainer of the Year in 2004, Best Tribute Show three times, and receiving a Golden Service Award for 30 years in the industry. “To get recognised by your peers like that is nice,” he said. Even after such a long career Athol still enjoys performing. “I’m always excited before a show. I just can’t wait to get out there. We try to make people believe they’re watching Roy Orbison in concert and I think we achieve that more often than not.” The Roy Orbison Tribute Show will be at the Caloundra Power Boat Club on Sunday, July 3 at 2.00pm. Tickets cost $10.00. For more information phone the Club on 5492 1444.

Crime Stoppers Queensland has travelled thousands of kilometres patrolling the Beerburrum Plantation Forest since the April launch of the Plantation Forest Safety campaign, a three month operation to raise public awareness and help stomp out forest crime. Crime Stoppers Queensland Chief Executive Officer Trevor O’Hara said the campaign is helping to discourage criminal behaviour and remind onlookers to report suspicious or illegal activity. “In partnership with the Queensland Police Service, Crime Stoppers has had a strong presence in the forest and we have spoken to a number of groups in relation to unlicensed and unregistered road use to deter possible crime,” he said. The campaign, which is due to conclude in a few weeks, is focused on reducing the growing incidence of arson offences, vehicle dumping, hazardous waste dumping and unlicensed and unregistered road users in the plantation. “We have noticed a reduction in illegal and destructive activity in the Beerburrum Plantation and have been helping to educate people who simply aren’t aware they weren’t supposed to be in the forest.” Mr O’Hara said Crime Stoppers has been pleased to receive alerts from members of the community using the new SMS service to report suspicious or illegal activity in the Beerburrum Forest Plantation.

“Sunshine Coast residents can continue to SMS the word ‘Forest’ to 1 800 333 000, and a return SMS will then alert the user on how to share information about offenders anonymously with Crime Stoppers,” Mr O’Hara said. “All information providers can remain anonymous and we urge people not to place themselves in a compromising or dangerous position to report a crime witnessed in the plantation.” Mr O’Hara said significant penalties apply for people caught breaking the law. “Anyone caught attempting to set fire to a motor vehicle is liable for imprisonment for up to 14 years,” Mr O’Hara said. “It costs tens of thousands of dollars each year to clean up forestry related offences including the removal of burnt out vehicles and hazardous waste.” Crime Stoppers Queensland is asking residents and commuters who pass by the plantation to be aware, remain cautious, and report any suspicious behaviour. In addition to the SMS function Sunshine Coast residents can phone 1 800 333 000 or visit www.qld.crimestoppers.com.au to report information about a crime.

Stepping Out Podiatry talks about Ingrown toenail treatment Problems with ingrown toenails are usually due to the shape of the nail bed (curved or involuted nails) or poor nail cutting. Ingrown toenails occur when a piece of the nail enters the fleshy part of the toe causing inflammation and often infection. To relieve the pain the nail piece needs to be properly removed by the Podiatrist under sterile conditions so infection does not spread. Persistent problems may require the nail edge to be permanently removed by your Podiatrist with a safe procedure that will prevent the problematic piece of nail from growing back.

Exchange Student’s wonderful adventure Summer sunshine, beaches, fishing, camping, kangaroos, Vegemite and big hearty breakfasts are things we are all familiar with, but for Italian exchange student Alessia Cavallone, 17, it all came as a bit of a culture shock.

But it didn’t take long for her to thoroughly enjoy everything quintessentially Australian - well, everything except for the Vegemite. Alessia, from Piemonte in North West Italy, arrived at the end of January to attend Glasshouse Country Christian College as a Year 11 exchange student for five months. She has been living with the Stevenson family at Peachester. This was her first experience being away from home. “The first month was quite hard because of the language and it was really hard to understand. And I had jetlag and every night I woke up at 3.00am for a week. But then I got used to it,” Alessia said. Alessia said she decided to become an exchange student, because she wanted to learn English, and she wanted to try a different style of life. Although she had a choice of countries, Australia was where she wanted to be. “I chose Australia because I like summer and the beaches. In my country they don’t really talk about Australia so I wanted to know some more. And because it’s really far away from my country I say, yeah, it can be a good experience.” It is too hard for her to pick a favourite moment during her stay. “I had a great time in general. I think just to go to a different school and make friends. And then start to learn English every day. And to just live here. I also liked the April holiday I had with my (exchange) family at Carnavon Gorge. I liked spending time with my family.” Alessia noticed some major differences in school life. She said in Italy they attend school six days a week from 8.00am to 1.20pm and they don’t hold swimming or athletics carnivals. “School here in Australia makes you like sport I think,” she said. Alessia has put together a scrapbook and kept a diary of her time here but it will be hard for her to say goodbye. “Life is more relaxing and slower here. It’s hard to leave, but I’m excited to see my family. It’s been a great experience. I’d like to thank my (Stevenson) family, school and friends.”

Michael and Tommy make a great team Seventeen-year-old Michael Short has been riding since he was eight, and has recently become the State Champion D Grade rider on his horse Tommy. To be able to compete at State level the horse and rider have to qualify and then are selected to be able to ride in a State event. Michael and Tommy have only been working together for five months but have shown great promise, and have just been selected on the Queensland Team to go to NSW for the Show Jumping Championships, on the weekend of July 8 and 9.

Glass House Mountains locals and family team Daniel, Annemarie, Alex, Jasmin, William and Angie Van Hees are set to record history at Hervey Bay when they undertake the largest paddle out human circle in support of whale conservation. They are establishing a new social enterprise called WILD World Records to document and reward feats relating to the environment as well as extreme fun. Annemarie said the WILD record attempt scheduled for part of the Bay’s National Whale Day celebrations, was to be opened by veteran wildlife crusader Bob Irwin. There will be talks from whale researchers, live music, markets and the screening of Oscarwinning documentary 'The Cove' about a controversial dolphin hunt in Japan. Annemarie said she and Daniel, who previously worked in retail, enrolled in USC degrees in 2009 to start new careers and follow their environmental passion. “This world records idea started in 2007 when my young son wanted to do something for the conservation movement in memory of Steve Irwin,” she said. After a knockback from Guinness World Records, the Van Hees family came up with their business idea for a regular publication recognising people’s efforts to save the natural world. She said their first book would be published after two years of recordtaking, with a percentage of profits going to a community youth education service. Annemarie said she was grateful to the volunteers and for the donations that will enable the paddle-out to go ahead in a burst of colour and camaraderie. “It will be the first record of its kind,” Annemarie said. “Hervey Bay got 500 people involved last year and we’re hoping for 985 for the record.” For further information about the event, contact the couple on 5496 9029 or email auswildrecords@hotmail.com Annemarie, who dropped into GCNews last week to chat about the event, will keep us updated with the event and photos of the day. Local artist success

Julie Pickering

Local artist Julie Pickering was recently awarded 'Highly Commended' in the Farm Fantastic art competition, Caboolture, for her painting 'Country Charm'. The theme for the competition was 'rural' and Julies depiction of a little farm house delighted the judges. Julie captured the charm of a country residence, with pretty gardens, tall trees and open spaces, a place that you would always be happy to come home to. Julie has been painting and creating various forms of artwork for most of her life and studied fine art at the Paris American Academy in France. She was co-owner of the Blue House Art Gallery, and now enjoys teaching art classes to adults and children at her home studio in Landsborough. "I really love to teach and get great satisfaction from seeing my students discover their own creative talents. I've had so many students say to me that they have always wanted to paint or draw, but didn't think they were good enough, and now they can't believe how good they are!" Julie can be contacted at julespickering@hotmail.com or on 5494 1081.

Uniquely delightful fundraiser ‘Mastering the art of life’ is the theme of a unique fundraising event for Compass Institute Inc. Taking place on Friday, July 22 at Mango Hill Farm, 159 Commissioners Flat Road, Peachester. The afternoon will include a guest speaker, life drawing workshops, finger food and champagne on arrival as well as raffles, a silent auction and more. The Compass Institute is an incorporated charitable organisation supporting over 60 young adults (post secondary school) with intellectual and / or physical disabilities through three centres on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. In offering an award winning service, The Compass Institute utilises an innovative model based on further education and vocational training to assist these young people through the transition from school to an increasingly independent future.

The Friday, July 22, fundraising event, billed as an ‘Afternoon Delight’, combines sophistication and fun to raise both funds for people with disabilities and their profile in the community. The afternoon of delights costs $75.00 and includes inspirational guest speaker Lisa Cox who will share her journey of courage, along with a life drawing workshop (for $25.00 or to peruse the class is $15.00). Models for the class include Kurek Ashley and Leanore Lancaster. Art instructors are Philippa Stewart-Hall and Julie Maree Pickering. Major sponsors are Heritage Building Society and Mango Hill Farm. To book your place, contact Janelle Birse on 5476 7235 or email birgrove@bigpond.com, RSVP Friday, July 8. For more information on The Compass Institute go to www.compassinc.org.au

From July 1, Unitywater’s fixed water and sewerage access and water usage charges will increase by 3.6 per cent. This is consistent with the State Government’s decision to cap Local Government distributor-retailer residential and small business price rises at CPI for the next two years. The price cap does not apply to the State Government’s bulk water charge, which will increase by 25 per cent for Unitywater’s Sunshine Coast customers in 2011/12. The average three-person household on the Sunshine Coast will incur an annual increase of $32.00, or about nine cents a day, in Unitywater’s charges next financial year. They will pay $56.00 more for the State Government’s bulk water charge. Unitywater CEO, Jon Black, said pricing reforms outlined by the organisation in March, which aimed to standardise tariffs, fees and charges across Moreton Bay and the Sunshine Coast and shift the emphasis to user-pays, had to be postponed. Mr Black said instead, the existing price structure for Sunshine Coast customers would be retained. “We are disappointed that we have been unable to pursue the reforms which were designed to simplify the current pricing system and deliver greater equity and transparency,” he said. “We remain committed to those principles.”

gÊbag

Mr Black said trade waste and recycled water tariffs, fees and charges were unaffected by the state legislation and Unitywater had moved to simplify these prices and create greater consistency across its customer base. “We have halved the number of trade waste charges from 80 to 40 in 2011/12 and the new structure reflects the environmental impact of different kinds of trade waste and encourages environmentally-friendly waste management practices,” he said. Mr Black said Unitywater would continue to roll out investment in critical capital works to support population growth on the Sunshine Coast and meet the Government’s increasingly stringent environmental standards. He said the organisation would borrow to fund these works and determine the price path to recover the cost over the life of the assets. “Unitywater still has a responsibility to deliver this essential infrastructure, regardless of the price cap,” Mr Black said. “Unfortunately, since the removal of the State Government subsidy for sewerage infrastructure in 2009, the burden of funding these works will fall on our customers.” He said the organisation also remained focused on improving customer service, achieving further operational efficiencies and pursuing sustainable, innovative technologies and opportunities to benefit its customers and the environment. Hot computer tips

Recently, many people have fallen foul of a fake Windows Security Alert, a scam known as ‘scareware’ or ‘rogueware’. A very convincing Windows Anti-Virus Program dialogue box appears, informing the user of several malicious infections on their computer, with prompts to download further software, after payment, to remedy the infections. Mac users have also been recipients of the same scareware with Mac branding! Apart from the financial cost, a downloaded program could lead to a breach of personal identity, and the sharing of your personal information with other fraudsters! Prevention is obviously the best tactic, so ensure your computer has adequate protection and stay alert to these scams. Remember, Microsoft and Mac NEVER recommend downloading third-party software that costs money. Scareware removal can be very complex and usually requires indepth professional knowledge. Gus and Kylie Gillespie of Mooloolah Computers provide both PC and Mac support. Visit www.mooloolahpc.com.au for a link to the Microsoft information page regarding this scam, and to the Australian Government’s National Cyber Security Awareness program. “We pride ourselves on our prompt, reliable service and quality workmanship including free, local pickup and delivery,” adds Gary. “All our work is undertaken by qualified tradespersons, each with over 30 years experience. In our small hinterland towns like Beerwah, you have to offer good quality work and good customer relations.” Gary and Cheryle are thrilled that the close of June 2011 marks their 20th year in business in the Beerwah area. Recalling their business highlights they point out, “we have met some really nice people in the 20 years we have been in business and some have become life time friends. We have seen a lot of changes in business in the local area over this time also.

Gary, Cheryle, and Dean of Campbell's Upholstery

“Some for the better and others, well time will tell. A business highlight for us over the past 20 years is certainly that we have been able to buy our own business premises.” “We really haven’t made a lot of changes. We try and continue to do good quality work. Dean our tradesman has been with us for over 15 years at the end of this year. This is unheard of in our trade to have someone as loyal and trustworthy as Dean is. “Recent changes include the revamp of our signs after a decade - thanks to Jason (business associate) at Benga Signs. We would really like to thank all our valued customers for their support over the past 20 years,” says Gary. Around Town With Cathy Abercrombie New baby and kids clothing store, ‘All About Me’ at Landsborough is fast approaching its third month of being open. Owner Sharon would like to say a huge thank you to all her local customers for their support. She is amazed at the continual line of shoppers in her new store seeking out winter lines for babies and kids, particularly after those first extreme winter days we had early in the month. If you haven’t had a chance to call in – you should really check it out, the shop is opposite the museum in Landsborough and next door to Eclectic Dreams.

Shoppers at Beerwah Camping were buying up a storm recently to be in the running for an OzPig Cooker / Heater. Not surprising at this time of year the OzPig would be a handy addition to your own backyard or to take with you for camping and fishing trips. With the OzPig you can relax and enjoy the warmth of an open fire in safety while you boil the billy and cook up a feast. To be in the prize draw, all you had to do was make an in-store purchase. The lucky winner was Glass House Mountain’s resident, Judy Keays who was thrilled with her prize and said she always tries to support local business. If you haven’t been into Glass House Mountains township lately you may not have seen the new pizza pasta restaurant – Seven Secrets. They are open Tuesday – Sunday for dinner and at this stage they are opening for lunch on Friday, with a great special of a 9" pizza and a can of coke for $10.00. You can find out all about them on page 11. And if you are looking for a way to wear out the kids during the holidays you should take them down to Gowinta Farms, Burys Road, Beerwah and get them out there picking their own morning tea. PYO strawberries is on from July 1 to November 30 from 8.00am – 4.00pm each day.

Landsborough State School have been pursuing behaviour excellence by following our school’s 4B’s which are expectations that were built with our students and staff. During term three we will have a rule of the week that is advertised through parade and teachers will teach specific lessons around this rule.We also have a Bee Mascot and will fly flags out the front of our school to resemble each ‘be’ area: be responsible, be respectful, be safe and be an active learner. All of our students work very hard to model the appropriate behaviours to younger students. This has created a caring warm environment where students feel safe, non-threatened and can thrive

Year 12 students from Beerwah State High School came up with a unique, high energy and challenging event to raise funds for their graduation this year – a bike riding and basketball hoop shooting marathon. Tyler Bosch, School Captain, said 80 students, (10 Year 12 teams and one Year 10 team) rode stationary bikes and shot hoops from 5.00pm on Friday, June 24, through to 6.00am the following morning. The teams had to have one team member peddling continuously while another team member shot hoops, and the bike was not allowed to stop for more than 30 seconds. The team with the highest number of hoops scored at the end was the winner. While the Year 12’s were fundraising for their graduation, the Year 10 team were putting their pedal power to the test to raise money for Zambian Outreach.

in exciting classrooms full of great teaching and learning. We are so lucky to have one of our teachers Max Cruz, a fine art major, who has created and painted with our students a new mural that resembles our 4B’s. If you would like to know more about our school or our behaviour expectations, please feel free to contact us.

The biggest challenge for the participants was the freezing cold weather and staying awake the entire night, but the students were prepared with food, music, movies and caffeine. For those who needed to recharge, they had sports mats and sleeping bags ready to go. The students were given a lot of support with the fundraiser and had the opportunity to gain personal sponsors. Businesses donated prizes for the mini competitions that were also held throughout the night. These included backwards hoop shooting and the longest distance shot. The team with the highest score on the night also won a great prize. Sponsors included Morayfield businesses Anaconda, A-Mart All Sports, Bunning’s Warehouse, Officeworks, and Super Cheap Auto. Besides raising money, Mikaela Pickels, Treasurer of the Student Council, said the event was also to bring people together as part of their Connectivity Through Positivity project, which aims to get cohorts and the school working together as one.

Community Group Updates Beerwah Writers Group Contributed by John Wright

At our recent meeting we discussed various methods of structuring novels and short stories. Our ‘general theme’ was items of description. Twelve contributions, read by the authors, were of locations in country villages, towns and one city. Two more included trains and railway journeys. Evidence of sparkling prose was revealed in all these passages. In our session of reading new stories, David tugged emotional strings with his description of the thoughts, frustration and anger in the last hours of an old man. Then Trevor took us to Kalgoorlie with a soon-to-be U S President and his romantic affairs.

We were pleased to learn that Kate’s new book has just been released and a launch event will be held in the near future. A pre-release copy was shown. Titled ‘Your Neighbours – The Gypsies in Australia’, this non-fiction work is receiving excellent reviews. We continue to provide opportunities for writers to present their work and receive feedback. Meetings take place at Beerwah Library on the second and fourth Friday of each month. Whether you are a writer, or just interested in writing, you will find a friendly welcome in this group whose members range from beginners to accomplished, published authors. Refreshments are provided for a small donation. Guests and visitors welcomed. Membership fee is $5.00 per year. For further information telephone John – 5493 0624.

Glasshouse Country Care

Glasshouse Country Care (GCC) covers the geographical area from Glenview to Beerburrum, Mooloolah Valley and west to Peachester and is run by an active community-based Management Committee. GCC provides care for people who are frail, aged or have a disability, so that they may continue to live comfortably in their own home. Under the umbrella of Home and Community Care (HACC), the association is able to provide activities in the Day Centre, transport for medical appointments, home modifications and maintenance, domestic assistance and social support. Two major projects are under completion at the centre, which is located at 352 Peachester Road, Beerwah. A new shed has just been erected for the development of the maintenance and home modification programs, along with a respite cottage for day and overnight stays in the event of an emergency, or when ‘carers’ may have to deal with an unplanned event. A wonderful service to our community is Meals on Wheels. Meals are prepared at the Centre and delivered by volunteer drivers on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

One of the activities provided in the Day Centre Although the services and work provided by GCC are jointly funded by the Commonwealth and State Governments through HACC, there is a minimal fee attached to the services. At the present time, over 1,000 clients are on the books. If you feel you might be able to use these wonderful services, or assist in volunteering driving, please contact the office on 5494 6948 or ghcare@westnet.com.au

On Sunday, June 19, 38 Toastmasters came together for their annual changeover meeting with a beautiful lunch at Esther Frizzo’s place. It was nice to also welcome visitors from the Kawana, Buderim and Maleny Clubs. It was so good to catch up with friends we don’t see every fortnight. As always the program put together by our members was full of fun and variety. We were very pleased to welcome three new members into our club, Barbara Ramadge-Ross, Rosanna Frizzo and Arthur Lovewell; we are looking forward to your involvement in the club. Every year Toastmaster Clubs vote for the Toastmaster of the year and the most improved Toastmaster. This year the awards went to Chris Magee for TM of the year and to Peter Agapow for the most improved TM. Congratulations to you both. We also welcomed a new committee for the year 2011 / 2012. Under the competent leadership of President Allie Lovett, it will surely be smooth sailing for our members. The team for the coming year helping her to achieve this are: Chris Magee - Immediate Past President, Esther Frizzo - VP Education, Kerry Gillam - Secretary, Renata Burnell - Treasurer, Martine Goedhart - VP Public Relations, Jen Hamilton - VP Membership and Peter Agapow - Sgt. at Arms. As we all know, there is no ‘I’ in ‘team’. In our club we all work together, there is great camaraderie among all the members and while having fun loving meetings, we’re also setting our goals for the year to come. Would you like to be part of our dynamic group? Why not give us a call, or visit us at the next meeting? We meet every second and fourth Thursday of the month in the Church on the Rise, Peachester Road, Beerwah at 9.00am for a 9.30am start. Re: Sick of being brushed aside, GCNews June 15

In the continuing silence from Sunshine Coast Council and our Division 1 elected representative, readers might be interested in the Ombudsman’s judgment concerning the Council’s removal of 300 trees on our foreshore at Roys Road in a morning raid last December. The Ombudsman found it ‘overwhelming’, that in four years of negotiation with us, the Council failed to give us correct information concerning revegetating the foreshore, and gave us every reason to believe we had Council permission. While Council had a legal right to remove the trees, Council denied us natural justice by failing to adequately inform us about their secretive Council meeting last November and failed to inform us of our appeal rights or give us adequate time to object. It is now nearly two weeks since we received the judgment and as yet Council has failed to respond. Are we to receive an apology? Will the officers who failed in their duty be sacked? Is our representative still intent on turning an aboriginal midden into a car park? When will the denial of natural justice be redressed? We are still keen to find out what allegations were raised against us to cause our own elected representative to forward the motion to remove the trees on the basis of ‘good order and neighbourly relations’. Why did the Council need a closed meeting? Was it to enable disgruntled enemies to make false and unsubstantiated accusations against us without fear of the law? I believe the ‘closed meeting’ format was abused and the whole meeting should be declared invalid. Council and our representative could have solved this problem four years ago at no expense to anyone. Now it is mired in ill feeling and expense. So come on Council, accept the umpire’s decision and grant us natural justice. Be warned residents. Get to know your candidates for the next election and find one who will represent you fully, forcefully and fairly or the same thing might well happen to you! I will continue to keep readers informed. I would also like to thank all my patients who have taken the time to personally express their sympathy for the way we have been treated and their support for our cause. Customer service with kindness

I am writing to acknowledge the courtesy of the staff on my visit to the ANZ bank, Beerwah on Wednesday, June 15. A gentleman met me at the door and helped me from my scooter into the bank. While I was waiting, another staff member, a lady, brought me a seat, and subsequently escorted me from the bank and helped me to my scooter. I write this in appreciation of these acts of kindness. Glyn Morris Beerwah

Glass House improvements

While Steve Ralph (GCNews June 6) may have some concerns about the roundabout adjacent to the railway parking area, what about a more pressing issue? How long will we have to endure the endless procession of trucks on the inadequate entry road through this village from Steve Irwin Way and risk the death of a child crossing the road? Over a million dollars was spent on the Glasshouse Visitors Information Centre; more is now being poured into improvements at the shopping area. It could be a pleasant peoplefriendly village. However, a footpath on the western side and an inviting ramp from the Glasshouse Visitor information Centre will be the catalysts for a serious injury or death unless sense prevails. The solution is obvious. The entrance needs urgent revision and sensible relocation. The railway road overpass already has the road elevated. Why not continue it east at a similar elevation to meet Steve Irwin Way south of the Visitor information Centre? Secondary roads would pass underneath to allow access to shops while through traffic would bypass. The green parklands adjacent to the Visitor Information centre could be ideal for markets but when the centre was opened it required full-time police traffic control because it is a very dangerous crossing. That section doesn’t need to be a through road. If we wait until announced ‘improvements’ to the village entrance are implemented it will be too late. After that it will take a serious injury to mark another ‘investigation’ and consequent delay to fixing an urgent and very obvious problem. Neville Field Glass House Mountains

Tower talk

In response to concerns raised in a recent article (tower fight continues for Landsborough residents, June 15 edition) there is no credible scientific evidence of health effects from living or working near a mobile phone base station. In fact, the World Health Organisation’s fact sheet on electromagnetic fields and public health states, ‘Considering the very low exposure levels and research results collected to date, there is no convincing scientific evidence that the weak RF signals from base stations and wireless networks cause adverse health effects’. Also a recent independent review of all the science on base stations and health by the Irish Government Expert Group found, ‘there is no scientific basis for, or evidence of, adverse health effects affecting either children or adults as a result of their exposure to RF fields from phone masts. This applies irrespective of the location of the phone mast’. The WHO fact sheet also noted ‘recent surveys have indicated that RF exposures from base stations and wireless technologies in publicly accessible areas (including schools and hospitals) are normally thousands of times below international standards’.

A recent audit of base stations across Australia by ARPANSA found some sites, even those expected to have the highest levels, emit less than 0.001 per cent of the safety standard, or 100,000 times below the standard. However, the mobile phone industry acknowledges that some people are genuinely concerned and we are committed to addressing these concerns responsibly through active community and local government consultation. Bouquet to Bob

Each May I return to my home town of Beerwah to help my mum with her stand at the Glasshouse Country Garden and Sustainability Expo. I would like to send a bouquet to Bob McLean who has done an amazing job coordinating this event since its inception. It is such a pleasure dealing with Bob, and I truly believe he doesn’t receive the praise he deserves for making this event such a success. I know he does it for the love of the community and for that I say three cheers for Bob! Amy Ratcliffe, Port Melbourne, Victoria

Meridan access - A Letter to Council

My friends and I have a simple question. Can you please explain to us the direction of traffic flow on Racecourse Road, Meridan Plains? Every time we want to turn left to Caloundra Road from Racecourse Road, you put a traffic light at the turning point and we have to turn right and then go under the overpass and turn left to come to Caloundra Road. I see on the map that there is a National Park on the left side, but for our environment we think that it is better that we take 5 m2 off the National Park and save the cost of the traffic light and 100m2 from the other land, which could then be left natural. But when we come from the opposite side there is not a National Park. Why can we not then simply turn left? Is the cost and service of the traffic lights necessary, because the money you save here could be better spent for ratepayer’s benefit? For example the foot and bicycle path from Glass House to Landsborough could be completed. Josef Albrecht, Glass House Mountains

Can you help?

I am a local mum with five children and my 11-year-old who is autistic has a wish to ride a bike for the first time. Unfortunately I cannot afford to purchase him something suitable. I would really appreciate some assistance to raise the $350.00 I need to purchase the second hand tricycle I have located in Caboolture. If there is anyone in our community that would be able to assist me in making his wish come true could you please contact me on rayme5@ bigpond.com Rayme Harvey Landsborough

You Said It Glasshouse Mountains Musos Club The Glasshouse Mountains Musos Club held its second night at the Glasshouse Sports Club on Thursday, June 16, and was enjoyed by all, with close to 50 people attending. Amongst the performers were Champagne, featuring the rich harmony of Sue, Neil and Pam. Amongst their offerings was an exquisite version of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Bird on a Wing’. Men to Boyz featuring Brian and Paul from Montville, are a new group with a country leaning. They were joined on stage by Neil on bass who, along with Ralph on drums, competently backed most of the artists during the evening. These included vocalist Rose Palmer, joining us for the first time and assuring us of a return visit next month.

The evening was begun by local guitarist Paul Fagan with a number of solo pieces, and ended with a fine old unamplified sing-a-long with Gary and Don, accompanied by Clive and Terry, sharing with us a range of songs from the Eagles and Pink Floyd, culminating in a rousing version of Bob Seger’s Nightmoves. Once again the sound was provided by the Sound Space – a local PA provider and recording studio. We are grateful to them, the organisers - Michael and Paul, and the club for providing drinks, meals and a pleasant atmosphere for all. The Musos Club will meet regularly on the second Thursday of the month at the Sports Club with the next session on July 11, from 7.00pm to 10.00pm. If you’d like to join us in a friendly, non competitive environment, whether to listen or to play, we welcome you, and if you’d like backing musicians please bring some chord and lyric charts with you.

Hooning around the town There has been recent media reports of increased incidences of hooning activities around Maleny. It seems that this anti social behaviour is widespread throughout the hinterland. Take a look at the photo of the Mooloolah Valley Community Centre grounds, taken last week, after some lame-brains got their jollies by destroying the area used for the Mooloolah community Family Fun Day. This occurred on two successive nights. The upkeep and maintenance of the Centre is carried out by volunteers, who give their time and effort for the benefit of the entire community. Of course these morons hide behind darkness and carry out their stupidity when most law abiding citizens are asleep. One can only assume that these 'children' are newly licensed and as such, are still living at home. Do their parents ever question what they are up to during the small hours? The population of the hinterland townships has exploded in recent years. What was a nice friendly country atmosphere has now been surpassed by this sort of thing. One only has to drive on any of our roads to

The Beerwah Church of England by Helen Page

As the face of Beerwah changes once again, long-term residents may recall the little Anglican church of St James which stood for many decades near the southern end of Simpson Street now dominated by the Aldi complex. The first move towards a Church of England for the district came when James Mawhinney donated part of his property on the eastern side of the railway line. The church was built there by volunteer labour, and completed in March 1915. Some years later the church building was moved to the more central Simpson Street site. see the wheel mark evidence. The police seem unable to stop this activity....the courts are too lenient on offenders anyway, so what is the use. I would like to see more use of CCTV in our towns. That will catch the culprit's registration numbers. Then we need a Premier who will cancel the licenses of hoons for a mandatory three years and have their cars sold to defray the cost of clean-up. Perhaps 'can-do' Newman is the answer we need. Unhappy local Mooloolah reads: ‘TENDERS are invited for taking down Church of England at Beerwah and rebuilding same on new site at Beerwah. Full particulars obtained from J. L. BYGRAVE, Vicar's Warden.’ Newspaper archives indicate that St James’ Church was the centre of a busy religious and social life for its congregation. Regular services, visits by the Bishop, Confirmations, Sunday School picnics, as well as dances, garden parties, balls, bazaars etc are all recorded. This continued through the 1930s and 40s; the Ladies Guild organising many of the functions. I remember such events clearly into the 1950s and 1960s, including a well-attended Sunday School during my own childhood. In the early 1990s, Beerwah Anglicans became part of the Glasshouse Country Anglican Parish, worshipping at the Mary Mackillop Centre on Peachester Road. The old church was eventually sold for removal; but we should not forget the role it played in the district for over 80 years. A Brisbane Courier report on the dedication ceremony at the original site illustrates the importance of the church to the early Beerwah community: ‘On Saturday the Ven H. Le Fanu

My heartfelt thanks to all the people who signed Landsborough’s 'No Tower Petition', spread the word, sent letters, emails and helped in so many ways in the limited time we had to object. Now Cr Jenny McKay is going to present our objections at the next council meeting. Any of your letters to other councillors or even state members would greatly help too. Enquire to customer service at SCRC phone 1300 650 112. Treat the earth and all that live in it with respect, show respect for your fellow being, work together for the benefit of all mankind, give assistance and kindness wherever needed, do what you know to be right, and look after the wellbeing of mind and body. Dedicate a share of your efforts to the greater good, take responsibility for your actions. Make Landsborough a safe, peaceful place for young and old; don’t give up this fight for our town. Anne Landsborough

(Archdeacon of Brisbane) dedicated the new church building at Beerwah to St. James. Not only was the building packed to its utmost capacity, but many were compelled to remain outside. After the dedication service, which was fully choral, evensong was conducted by the vicar (the Rev. Cecil Smith), the musical part of the service being well rendered by a choir, largely augmented by church friends from Nambour. Mr Cheney officiated at the new church organ, which is his own gift to the church. Later in the afternoon a social gathering took place, when afternoon tea was provided by the ladles of the congregation. The following day (Sunday) saw a great gathering of church people from the country districts round about, and the little church was found far too small for the assembled congregation.' TAX TIME The end of the financial year, June 30, is rapidly approaching and it is time to do some urgent tax planning. 1. Car log book - If you use your car for work purposes and keep a log book for 12 weeks then the deductions can be in the thousands. Make sure that you keep all costs associated with the running of your car for the whole year, not just the period that you kept the log book. 2. Super co-contribution - If your income is under $31,920 and you contribute $1,000 post tax into super, the government will match it dollar for

2010 / 2011

dollar. This incentive gradually phases out above this figure at $61,920. 3. Education Tax Refund - Got kids at school and get the Family Tax Benefit Part A? Then don’t miss out on this tax rebate which gives a 50 per cent refund on certain education expenses up to $794 expenditure for each primary school child and $1,588 for each secondary school student. School uniforms are only claimable from next year. 4. Minimise capital gains tax (CGT) If you made a nice capital gain or two on the stock market this year then you can reduce CGT by selling any non-performing shares that you may be holding. Any unrealised gains should be sold Tax Advisory Service after July 1 to defer tax MYOB & QuickBooks Assistance for another year. And remember that if you hold Business Activity Statements shares for more than 12 Income Tax Returns months you reduce CGT Electronic Lodgment by half. • Company / Trust Formation 5. Salary sacrifice into super • Registered ASIC Agent For those under 50, you • Based in Glass House Mountains can contribute up to $25,000 per year into • Local Pick Up and Delivery super which is only taxed • Friendly Personalised Service at 15 per cent. This figure increases to $50,000 if you are over 50. Build e: roxanne.young@bigpond.com your nest egg quicker

rather than paying up to 46.5 per cent tax. 6. Prepay interest - If you are expecting that you will have a lower income next year (due to factors such as maternity leave or redundancy) then why not prepay interest for up to 12 months in advance before the year’s end on your rental property or margin loan and reduce your higher income this year? 7. Keep your receipts - With the ATO increasing their audit activity this year yet again it is important that you keep your receipts. The ATO motto is no receipt = no deduction so you could be costing yourself $$$. 8. Spouse super contribution - If you earn less than $10,800 then your spouse can put up to $3,000 into your super fund and they will receive an 18 per cent tax rebate. 9. Get a great accountant - Avoid paying too much in tax or leaving yourself to a visit from the taxman. Great accountants are like quantity surveyors ... they know where the boundaries are. And their fees are tax deductible! 10. Just do it! - You now have got some great tax tips; it’s time to take action. Times are tough so every dollar saved counts. These tax tips were provided by Mr Taxman, Adrian Raftery, author of 101 Ways to Save Money on Your Tax – Legally! $24.95 RRP.

According the ATO these people have a higher risk of getting their work-related expenses claims wrong: Insufficient or incorrect documentation for motor vehicle expense claims, travel expenses, home office expenses, internet expenses and mobile phone expenses. matter what trade or profession you are in, the ATO are monitoring the claims made by people in your trade or profession. You can go to the ATO’s website www.ato.gov.au for more information on what you can claim and can’t claim. You can also ask your accountant.

Q. I have a rental property. What can I claim?

A. The basic answer is that you can claim all expenses incurred in connection with the rental property. Each year the ATO publishes a Guide for Rental Property Owners. This guide details what you can claim and can’t claim. You can download the guide from the ATO’s website, www.ato.gov.au. Or you can ask your accountant!

Q Have the tax rates changed?

A. Over recent years the income tax rates have changed: certain rates have been reduced slightly and certain thresholds were increased. The only change from 2009/10 to 2010/11 was an increase in the 15 per cent threshold from $35,000 to $37,000, which would have given most people about $7.00 more per week during the 2010/11 year. The tax rates are unchanged from 2010/11 to 2011/12.

Q. How do I prepare and lodge my tax return?

A. For most people the preparation of income tax returns has not become easier over the years, but the ATO is providing e-tax, which enables tax payers to prepare and lodge their tax return electronically. Most taxpayers still go to an accountant or tax agent to ensure the return is prepared correctly and claims are maximised. If you expect a refund, many tax agents offer to deduct their fee from the refund.

Vibrosaun at Hinterland Beauty & Health Centre The vibrosaun was created by a medical practitioner, chiropractor, an osteopath, a physiotherapist and a design engineer. The idea was to create a machine that would, as near as possible, stimulate exercise without putting stress on the body. It’s said the results have been overwhelming. The machine, a therapeutic dry sauna consisting of a padded vibrating bed, dry heat that circulates throughout the unit over and under the bed, has a fan to keep the face cool, combined aromatherapy and music. Functioning as a combined sauna and vibration massage machine, the vibration stimulates and relaxes the muscles, while the dry heat dilates the blood vessels and increases the metabolism and pulse rate. This, in turn, increases the blood flow and intake of oxygen to create energy and burn carbohydrates, protein and fat cells. Kidney function is also accelerated, assisting the removal of lactic acid and blood wastes.

The vibrosaun has many benefits including relief of muscular aches and pains, increased circulation and therapeutic aid for sufferers of arthritic and rheumatic pains. It simulates exercise to improve muscle tone, promote perspiration and to eliminate body wastes and stimulate kidney functions. The soothing environment also helps relieve tension and stress. If you want to rest easier and unwind after a hard day, make an appointment for the Vibrosaun with Hinterland Beauty & Health Centre on 5439 9945.

Counselling Your spare change for doorknock appeal It’s time to open your doors, open your hearts and gather your small change to give to Leukaemia Foundation volunteers who will be knocking on neighbourhood doors across the state for the annual Doorknock Appeal on from July 16 – 29. A few gold coins are all it takes to make a difference in the life of a leukaemia patient. Collectively, the Foundation hopes to raise $1.2 million from the appeal to continue investment in medical research, giving patients the chance to dream of a brighter future. Leukaemia Foundation of Queensland CEO, Peter Johnstone, said the Doorknock Appeal would also help raise funds to support patients as they faced the most difficult battle of their lives. “A blood cancer diagnosis is not only devastating for the patient but presents many financial and emotional challenges for the whole family, Mr Johnstone said. “For many Queenslanders a diagnosis means leaving their home immediately for intensive and lengthy medical treatment in a different city. 20 |

Solar eclipse New Moon in Cancer

July starts with the solar eclipse New Moon in Cancer on Friday, July 1, extending the eclipse season by a couple of weeks – a time of intensity and unexpected changes in people’s lives. This eclipsed New Moon represents a radical new beginning associated with our home and family life, and also in our relationship to the past. It can also represent the beginning of a new cycle in the way we care for others, the way we nurture ourselves, and our relationship with women in general. If your birthday is close to this date, this eclipsed New Moon marks the beginning of a very significant new cycle for you in terms of your sense of who you are and your purpose in life. Uranus goes retrograde on Sunday, July 10. The Uranus retrograde period provides an opportunity to revisit the insights you may have experienced over the last seven months, especially around becoming truer to yourself and more authentic. The Full Moon on Friday, July 15 is in Capricorn, bringing the difference between public and private life into sharp focus and inviting us to find a balance between these two opposing polarities of work and home life. This month sees a second New Moon falling in Leo on Sunday, July 31. This is a perfect time to re-energise and revitalise. Leo is a fire sign, full of passion and enthusiasm for life, with a natural warmth and generosity of spirit. Wherever this New Moon falls in your chart, this is the area of your life that will receive a boost of new energy and vitality. Again, if your birthday is close to this date, this is the beginning of a significant new cycle for you. There is also advance warning to get important paperwork completed by the end of July as Mercury goes retrograde at the beginning of next month. With love Chirone

The Caxton Street Jazz Band Whether you dance or just enjoy listening, either way The Caxton Street Jazz Band is for you. The band will be blowing up a storm on Sunday, July 10 at the Kawana Community Hall in Nanyima Street Buddina, when they present the music of Kenny Ball, Acker Bilk and Chris Barberas well as the Caxton Street favourites. The band’s music is firmly planted in the hot traditional jazz of the early 1900’s, but many other music influences are represented in their performances. With music drawn from the early Ellington, Armstrong, through to the mainstream jazz of the 30’s 40’s and 50’s, in this concert, the music of the great British Jazz bands will be played. The band is more than a jazz band. The six piece Caxton Street Jazz Band appeals not only to jazz aficionados but has a wide following from the general public who enjoy listening and dancing to good music. It is formed by a group of talented musicians who enjoy playing and entertaining. This concert is too good to miss. As the show is ticketed, it is advisable to book by phoning Ted on 5491 6017 or Helen 5438 1976 (credit cards). Bruce Highway petition

I have launched a petition calling for the Australian Government to widen the Bruce Highway to six lanes between Caboolture and the Sunshine Coast. I have spoken in the Australian Parliament on the issue numerous times and also written to the relevant Minister and the Prime Minister about the issue. It is very important that we get upgrades to the highway to ensure it is as efficient and safe as possible and able to meet the demands of our growing population. The petition attracted 391 signatures over two days at the Maleny Show and it is now well over 400. I’m urging concerned Sunshine Coast residents to make an effort to add their names to the list so we can put pressure on the Government to address this vital need. The petitions are available for signing at my office at the corner of Point Cartwright Drive and Nicklin Way, Buddina, and also at the office of Andrew Powell MP, 70 Maple Street, Maleny. Business people who are keen to have a copy of the petition in their offices/outlet can contact my office on 5444 4888.

Parliament Speech

I spoke recently in the Australian Parliament on the infrastructure needs of a growing area like the Sunshine Coast and also the need for investment in creating jobs and sustainable tourism. In my speech, I said “the Sunshine Coast is one of the fastest growing areas of Australia. Because we are a fast-growing area, we never seem to have the infrastructure we require to meet the needs of our growing population. We need to upgrade the Bruce Highway to six lanes all the way from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast. The former Howard government invested money to upgrade the Bruce Highway from Brisbane to Caboolture and, at the time, that removed the worst bottleneck between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. But as road traffic continues to grow, delays seem to be inevitable. The existing four-lane highway—that is, two lanes in each direction—desperately needs upgrading to six lanes. Not to do so is completely unacceptable.” For a copy of the speech or any other speeches, contact my office.

NINTENDO, Wii, X-Box. These are all very familiar pastimes for our kids today. As a baby boomer, football, bike-riding for hours and conjuring up Famous Five adventures were the games I enjoyed until the street lights came on to signal me back indoors. Unfortunately, these days, our children are unable to enjoy the same freedoms. Society is more safety conscious - for good reason - and our daily lives don’t seem to enable them to have as much leisure time available. Last week I attended the Beerwah State School athletics carnival where I was so pleased to meet a group of children who are finding a balance between exercise and their internet hobbies. It was obvious they loved taking part in the athletics carnival. The sheer joy they got from running as fast as they could was evident. I was particularly impressed with the relay teams. The relay was fought out by teams of mates who in those glorious moments of mateship had no thoughts for computer games. I have to say the smiles on their faces made me proud to live on the coast where our kids still enjoy so many outdoor activities. Rather than congratulate one athlete I would like to congratulate all the participants. You are making your parents proud! In the meantime why not try to share some outdoor activities with the kids during the holidays? It will give them a chance to enjoy the outdoors with you rather than just giving their thumbs a workout.

Make sure your child doesn’t miss out...

PERSONAL DEBT LEVEL LINK TO “MORTGAGE STRESS” Mortgage holders are being urged to assess their personal debt levels to ease – or avert – “mortgage stress”. According to Smartline Personal Mortgage Adviser Teresa Harrison, it was actually “personal debt stress” that exacerbated mortgage repayment pressure. “Mortgage stress is a muchtouted measure of how debt is impacting lifestyle, but it’s often personal debt that is the root cause of the problem, rather than mortgage repayments alone,” Ms Harrison said. www.gcnews.com.au

Damned if you do, smart if you don’t Environmental management prior to, during and beyond the construction of a subdivision is no longer an option - it’s an absolute must. And if it’s going to be located next to a national park, you just have to get it right. Sunshine Coast Council has not only studied this -- in its bid to become the most sustainable region in the nation, it has pioneered water and soil erosion management processes which are now regarded as best practice by a growing number of regions. One perfect example of this is the outcome of a small subdivision surrounded by the pristine Mount Ngungun National Park, nestled among the iconic Glasshouse Mountains. Neil Penny of Perren and Penny Civil contractors said the first mission in the making of the 19-lot Parklands estate was to construct large drains to the perimeter of the job. Barrett Earthmoving was then able to shape and stabilise the future house allotments more easily, as the control of water flow from the national park was in place. “A combination of recycled mulch and seeding was used to achieve an almost instant effect,” spokesman Todd Barrett said. “The use of mulch to stabilise completed areas made the job easier to manage during the extended wet period.” The project’s final steps were to complete a new road and install power and water reticulation also made easier.

Contact 5439 9341 or 5496 9671 that we need to watch out for false prophets. In Matthew 24 Jesus’ disciples ask him a question about the destruction of Jerusalem and about the end of the earth. His first answer was to watch out that no one deceives you. He repeats a similar line two more times in this chapter. Jesus obviously knew that many false prophets and people claiming to be Jesus would appear on this earth. That’s why he warned us. The Bible tells of other signs of Jesus’ return in the same chapter. The Bible does not support the idea of reincarnation. When Jesus was walking on earth and one of his friends named Lazarus died, he likened death to sleep (see John 11). Lazarus was dead and Jesus was raising him from the dead. For the rest of us who die (sleep) we will have to wait for the resurrection until Jesus comes the second time in the clouds with his angels (see 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18). Is this Jesus in Kingaroy an imposter Jesus warned us about?

Heinrich Rusterholz Seventh Day Adventist Church In recent times we heard about the Jesus of Kingaroy and his partner Mary. I heard it the first time when I was taking the weekly service at Embracia Retirement Village at Beerwah. One of the volunteers asked me a question about the issue. A little later I saw a posting on facebook with a youtube link which I watched. It was interesting how this man told the audience that he started to remember his previous life through reincarnation. He remembered he was Jesus and that the people who are against him did not really understand the truth. This started me thinking of Jesus in the Bible and how he said

Your spare change for doorknock appeal

It’s time to open your doors, open your hearts and gather your small change to give to Leukaemia Foundation volunteers who will be knocking on neighbourhood doors across the state for the annual Doorknock Appeal on from July 16 – 29. “A blood cancer diagnosis is not only devastating for the patient but presents many financial and emotional challenges for the whole family,” Mr Johnstone said. “For many Queenslanders a diagnosis means leaving their home immediately for intensive and lengthy medical treatment in a different city.” “The Leukaemia Foundation tries to ease some of these burdens by providing accommodation close to hospitals and support services staff to provide counselling and assistance.” This year the Foundation’s patient accommodation facilities in Townsville and South Brisbane are being expanded to meet growing demand. Every day, five people in Queensland are diagnosed with leukaemias, lymphomas, myeloma and related blood disorders. One person is diagnosed every hour across Australia. So please, open your door to our friendly volunteers and help patients live their dreams for the future. Give what you can to help the Foundation continue its Vision to Cure and Mission to Care. To donate online, or for more information on how your donations will make a difference, please visit www.doorknock.net.au or call 1800 152 211. 36 |

Small farming workshop with Joel Salatin

Farmer Joel Salatin will present a workshop with a difference in the Beerwah Community Hall on Friday, August 5. Joel Salatin is not only a farmer – he and his family’s enterprise at PolyFace Farms in Virginia, USA, are a world-leading example of how a small family farm can become a diverse and profitable local food producer. Joel will show workshop participants how the benefits of local food systems can create resilience, stability and abundance in both farmers and the wider community. In one jam-packed day of entertaining knowledge and knowhow, Joel will share with everyone how his working model proves that small farms can raise and grow a variety of produce and sell produce through successful relationship marketing within the local community. Joel’s workshop will show you how to make your small farm more ethical, profitable, and deeply integrated with your community. Joel is a third generation ‘beyond organic’ farmer. PolyFace Farms’ innovative and effective farming techniques allow Joel and his family to produce ‘beyond organic’ produce effectively, in a way which regenerates their farmland while making them a profitable livelihood. The one day workshop will cover PolyFace Farms’ animal systems including pastured poultry, salad bar beef, forested ‘pigerator’ pork and the main-frame design of the farm. The enterprise’s ‘relationship marketing’ techniques will also be covered. Joel Salatin came to Australia in 2010 for a successful RegenAG tour and this workshop in Beerwah offers an opportunity for anyone thinking about farming or already on the land who wants to farm in a profitable, regenerative manner. The workshop is sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Council, SEQ Catchments and RegenAG, an alliance of farming families around the globe who are committed to helping regenerate the world’s farms, soils, communities and on-farm livelihoods. For more information and to book ring 4086 8019 or go to www.regenag. com and click on the ‘upcoming courses’ tab. www.gcnews.com.au

Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country

Horse Riding @ Rossi’s 5494 8515

Lessons for Beginners to Advanced

Only six and already a champion

Mooloolah Valley Bowls Club

Jayden Donald doesn’t really understand what all the fuss is about. He’s just having fun horse riding. But the Year 1 student at St Paul’s Lutheran Primary School has won a dozen sashes, ribbons and rosettes over the last few weeks, and is aiming for more in the very near future. Not bad for someone who only started riding seven months ago! Jayden was awarded Champion Boy Rider at the Caboolture Show earlier this month. He also won Under 8’s Boy Rider and School Child’s Pony Turnout, and came third in Tony Tots (six years and under). The following weekend, he won firsts for both Presentation and Rider Class, and placed fourth in Show jumping in his Club competition. He also received a fourth place, three fifth places and a sixth place in Sporting events. “Splash is the best!” Jayden said, his little face beaming. “His real name is ‘He’s Some Boy’, but my cousin and I call him Splash. He’s my cousin’s horse. He’s really good. I love riding him.” Jayden’s next event is at the Woodford Show. “I’m looking forward to going there – shows are great,” he said. “I really love the show bags!”

Tuesday, June 21 winners were Bob Patten, Teresa Scarffe and Rosemay Roderick. Raffle winner was Kev Woodman. Saturday, June 25 raffles were won by Kate Debnam (visitor) and Frank Kelly. The Final of the Men’s Pairs was played and won by Rob Hall and Peter Plunkett over Frank Kelly and Dick Burgess. A very good game by all accounts. Congratulations to our new Champions. We will be resuming our 2 bowl Triples on Monday, June 11. July morning tea at 9.30am. Names can be phoned in to Judy on 5492 3932 or Eileen on 5494 7247.We need teams so don’t delay, you will enjoy the day.

Numbers on Ladies’ Day last Wednesday were down due to some of our ladies playing away at

the Donnybrook Ladies’ Fours 2 Day Carnival. Sixteen players did enjoy the day however, under great bowling conditions. Thursday’s Open Pairs was won by Robbie Dean and Graham Richardson with 2 wins + 50. The runners-up were Bob Bloomer and Ron Wilson winning the second game with 28 shots. On Saturday we hosted the Caboolture District Men’s Pairs with Gary Lehmann and Terry Little putting in a good effort, but unfortunately going down in their second round 23/18 to Beachmere. Prizes ‘out of the hat’ for the afternoon social games of pairs and triples went to Grahame Kelton (visiting from Beenleigh), Trevor Bertram and Maurie Dawes. Members are reminded to support our Charity Day on Sunday, July 10, commencing at 1.00pm. It will be a fun afternoon with randomly selected teams for a game or two of social bowls. There will also be plenty of raffles with prizes donated by local businesses. Visiting bowlers and new players are welcome to join us. All proceeds from the day will go to cancer research. Coming Events: Charity Day, in aid of Cancer Research, Sunday, July 10, at 1.00pm. Monthly Jackpot Triples, Wednesday, July 13, at 9.00am.

Games Director, John McSwain recently awarded ‘Life Membership’ for services rendered to the Club www.gcnews.com.au

Down & Dirty with Brownie Jobs for the yard in July

• Prune passionfruit vines of unwanted growth, mulch and water well. Prune the vine by cutting all laterals (shoots coming from the main stem) back to two buds. • Feed your citrus trees. Use 125g of citrus tree fertiliser per year of age of the tree up to 1.25kg. You need to do this three times a year – July, November and February. • Time to plant bagged roses and if you need to, move existing rose bushes to another spot in the garden.

brownie@gcnews.com.au

• Treat your lawn for bindii as soon as it appears. Any of the broadleaf lawn herbicides, such as ‘bindii and clover killer’ will do, as will a thumb and forefinger. • Keep the high nitrogen fertiliser up to your cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli plants, as they need it to grow strong and large.

Vegetables

Plant asparagus, broad bean, peas, beans, parsnip, rhubarb, english spinach, silver beet, zucchini, potatoes, carrot, kohl rabi, lettuce, radish, spring onion, turnip, beetroot, broccoli, cabbage, capsicum, celery, garlic, leeks, swede, sweet potato and tomato.

An old man and woman were married for many years, even though they hated each other. Whenever there was a confrontation, yelling could be heard deep into the night. The old man would shout, “when I die, I will dig my way up and out of the grave and come back and haunt you for the rest of your life!” Neighbours feared him. They believed he practiced magic, because of the many strange occurrences that took place in their neighbourhood. The old man liked the fact that he was feared. To everyone’s relief, he died of

a heart attack when he was 98. His wife had a closed casket at the wake. After the burial, she went straight to the local bar and began to party, as if there was no tomorrow. Her neighbours, concerned for her safety, asked, “aren’t you afraid that he may indeed be able to dig his way out of the grave and haunt you for the rest of your life?” The wife put down her drink and said, “let him dig. I had him buried upside down.” And you know men won’t ask for directions... Des Holmsquest, Landsborough
