The fun and excitement of sideshow alley at a past Maleny Show

Disclaimer

Hi Everyone

R

egular readers of my column all know that my favourite part of the job is getting out of the office and meeting other people and sharing their stories. In the last few weeks I have been pretty busy getting out of the office and I have had the opportunity to meet Narelle, Toni, Bernadette and Nellie, residents at Lavally Lodge, where they live with six others with intellectual disabilities. What I have really enjoyed is just how amazing it is to be welcomed with such generous enthusiasm and how really nice it has been to see the excitement it brought them to have their photo in the paper.

And don’t get me wrong, I know that lots of locals love the response they get when they appear in the paper and they thank us and let us know that they appreciate our work. But when Narelle excitedly told me how she had been busy signing her autograph for people since she appeared in GCNews – and how they had referred to her as a celebrity, it made me realise just how much we are all the same. That it is nice sometimes for others to appreciate who we are just for that – and that in our own way we are all special, unique and ‘Newsworthy’.

The Beerwah Bulldogs Rugby League Football Club has been through some tough times over the last few years. Unfortunately, this has meant that some parents have considered the club isn’t one they want their kids involved in. But new club President, Stuart McLeod wants the whole community to know that the atmosphere and bad perceptions of the club are definitely a thing of the past. “When my wife and I wanted our son to play football, people warned us off the Bulldogs, saying that it was a rough club and they didn’t look after the juniors. “So last year I decided to coach my son’s team to keep an eye on things, and after several weeks I realised that all those negative perceptions were just that – perceptions. “The club had a real positive spirit and was very supportive. “Thanks to the efforts and dedication of pastPresident Dean Roberts and his family, the club was back on its feet and I felt proud for my son and me to be part of it. “I felt so confident that I decided to take on the President’s role, and with the support of a great committee, the club has a terrific vibe,” Stuart said. With over 220 players in teams ranging from Under 7’s through to Under 16’s, two girls teams, as well as an open women’s team and a C-Grade team – there is the backbone of a vibrant and dynamic family-orientated sporting club.

New club President, Stuart McLeod “The vision I see for our club is to provide a safe, friendly environment for our juniors to develop new skills, confidence and mateship,” he said. “Parents play a key role in this – their involvement and encouragement is vital and we make sure we keep in regular contact with parents through newsletters and Facebook. “We have – and stand by – a strict code of conduct for all players, parents, coaching staff and supporters and will always be enforcing the zero tolerance policy in regard to anti-social behaviour and dugs. So, if you love your football and would like to get involved in playing, coaching, or helping out at games, Stuart and the team at Beerwah Bulldogs RLFC would love to hear from you. All the club details are easily found on the Facebook page – just search for ‘Beerwah Bulldogs RLFC’.

Better mobile coverage coming soon Last year, Glasshouse Country News featured stories of the underwhelming mobile phone coverage and reception experienced by many residents and businesses. However locals will now, no doubt, be euphoric to hear that Telstra has begun a major upgrading operation of their mobile phone towers across the Glasshouse Country region. In July, five upgraded facilities and one brand new tower will be operational – and all will be 4G enabled, according to a Telstra spokesperson. “The six projects combined means that the communities of Glenview, Landsborough,

Beerwah, Glass House Mountains and Beerburrum will all be able to enjoy access to our latest network technology and the advanced speeds and network capacity this brings,” they said. The five upgraded mobile facilities are on Old Caloundra Road, Glenview; Old Gympie Road, Mount Mellum; Peachester Road, Beerwah; Mawsons Road, Beerwah; and Male Road, Beerburrum. The new tower is the facility currently under construction on Jeffreys Road, Glass House Mountains – just across the Steve Irwin Way intersection from the Glasshouse Country RSL. www.gcnews.com.au

Survivor and Inspirer

By Lea Parkes

They say that life is a journey and for some, the road can be a little rocky with bumps along the way. For some it is a smooth ride, and for others there are massive ups and downs. For Landsborough local Michael Teague, his early life had plenty of highs, exciting adventures and great opportunities and then all it took was someone else making a very bad decision to drink-drive and Mike’s life was turned upside down. On New Year’s Day in 1989 Mike finished his midnight to dawn shift as a DJ on Brisbane radio station B105 and on his way home to Mooloolah his car was involved in an accident on the Bruce Highway just near the Caloundra turn off. While he has no memory after playing the final song of his shift until the moment he came to with his bloodied head in the lap of a caring stranger on the side of the Highway – the outcome of that accident has impacted on every minute and every hour of his life since that moment. Mike battles each day with the effects of an organic brain injury sustained in the accident. He suffers constant pain and has shortterm memory loss. He has black outs, his organisation skills are not as good as they were, and his capacity to do many simple tasks has been reduced. And most of all he has lost a significant amount of his confidence.

Micheal at home in Landsborough Mike was born into a family with a passion for flying and by the time he was 18 he had a pilot licence. He served in the Air Force, and then went on to be a Military police officer. He decided that communication was where his heart lay and pursued a career in the media which included acting in the 1980’s TV soap – Sons and Daughters, and taking on the role of Solo Man in television advertising for a few years. He then worked in commercial radio where he rubbed shoulders and became friends with many celebrities.

However, his life has also seen the sudden loss of his father not long before his accident. Then a few years later he and his wife sadly lost a baby daughter to SIDS. Mike believes that the changes the brain injury caused to his personality and his lifestyle, contributed to the breakdown of his marriage and the loss of a lot of his friends from his media days. While these days material things aren’t important to Mike and how he lives his life has changed dramatically, he did admit that selling his bright yellow corvette was particularly sad. Just as heartbreaking was the day 10 years ago that he handed in his license. But from his own experience he knew the damage that a car could cause others when the driver’s capacity is impaired. While losing the freedom of driving a car has been one of the toughest decisions Mike has ever made, he knows that was the most responsible thing he could do. Mike is keen to share the message about the importance of being a responsible driver, particularly with our young people who will soon be getting their drivers licences. If you know of a group of young people that could benefit from Mike coming to talk to them, let us know at GCNews and we are happy to put you in contact with him. Through it all, one thing Mike hasn’t lost is his sense of humour, and his capacity to bring a smile to the face of others – he is a survivor and definitely and inspirer.

Australia goes nuts for local macadamia oil

Australians are going nuts for the macadamia oil sourced from plantations up and down Australia’s east coast, including our local Glass House Mountains. Staff at Macadamia Oils of Australia, which featured on ‘A Current Affair’ last Thursday, have been inundated with orders for their skincare range, following the hype generated by the TV segment. Macadamia Oils of Australia pioneered the commercial extraction of oil from Australia's native macadamia nuts and is the world's leading supplier of premium food and cosmetic grade macadamia nut oil. Australian Macadamia Society Chief Executive Officer Jolyon Burnett said that while millions of Australians enjoy regularly munching on the deliciously buttery nuts, not as many people were aware of their incredible beauty benefits - including the use of macadamia oil for skin, hair and nails. “The macadamia nut is incredibly versatile and this segment showcased them in a different way,” says Mr Burnett. “It’s one of the few foods that can be found right throughout the supermarket aisles, from fresh kernel to muesli and cereals, snack bars, confectionery, bakery products, frozen desserts, ice cream, oils, skin care and beauty products. “Macadamia oil is 100 per cent pure, free of any additives, not chemically treated and contains powerful monounsaturated fatty acids. It contains palmitoleic acid, which contains many great anti-aging compounds.” Shane Hill from Macadamia Oils of Australia

Ribbon cutting makes it official At Glasshouse Country Care last week, there was an official ceremony to open their very own Men’s Shed. The former shipping container has been transformed from a storage facility into what will become a centre of activity for members of the Young Adult Disability Group. Group co-ordinator Lorraine Bradford explained that the new space with work benches and equipment gave Glasshouse Country Care the opportunity to expand the types of activity that they can offer the participants with a focus on fine motor skills. “We would like to be able to make some items that we can sell, such as ornamental timber wishing wells, then these funds could go back into resources for other activities,” she said. One of the projects currently on the drawing board is a collage / mosaic that will be out of the plastic bottle tops from milk bottles that the participants have been collecting. With 23 individual clients attending the groups each week, and eight – 13 attending each day, the group members are provided with a broad range of activities including life skills and community days along with personal projects. The ribbon cutting was done by Jodie Savage who has been attending Glasshouse Country Care for the past 10 years.

YOUR LOCAL FOOT & ANKLE CLINIC

Is it time for your walking style to be assesssed?

Early this month, the amazing efforts of volunteers across the country were acknowledged during National Volunteer Week. In Glasshouse Country we have some amazing people who take on a variety of volunteer roles, depending on their own skills, interests and motivation for getting involved in our community. One such individual is Shona Marsh who has been a volunteer at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre for the past nine months. During that time, she has already been working in a number of roles within the centre including working in reception and coordinating community events. Shona said she was drawn to community work as it was a way to interact with other members of the local community. “It gets me out of the house and is a way that I can give back to a community that has been good to me,” she said. “I’ve lived in a lot of places that haven’t had support like the neighbourhood centre for the community, and realised that this support exists, but noticed that many people still don’t know about what support is offered,” Shona said. She is also interested in starting a Multiple Sclerosis support group for members of the community and their families who may benefit from this support. If you or someone you know would be interested in becoming involved in this type of group or if

Pain in the back? Is your back often stiff and sore? Does it take a while to get out of bed in the mornings? Have you given up hobbies you once enjoyed because the pain just isn’t worth it? Do you feel older than you really are? If so, we may be able to help. It is estimated that approximately 85 per cent of the population will experience low back pain at some stage of their lives. Despite its prevalence, it is by no means normal to experience any level of pain on a regular basis. The normal state of the human body is vibrant, healthy, and pain-free. If you are not feeling this way, something is pushing your body away from normal. We are all well aware that diet and exercise are key factors in keeping our bodies feeling great. What most people don’t know about is Spinal Subluxation, a term chiropractors use to describe dysfunctional vertebrae in the spine. This is a very common condition that pushes the body away from functioning normally and feeling great. Subluxations can be caused by old or new injuries, but most often are caused by repetitive stresses of everyday life. Low back and pelvic subluxations can also lead to further symptoms, such as hip and knee pain, or digestive troubles. There are many causes of back pain, and each cause requires a specific treatment. If your back pain is caused by Spinal Subluxation, the chiropractic adjustment is the only therapy that will correct the cause. To find out if Spinal Subluxation is the cause of your decreased quality of life, call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today, or visit www.adjusttolife.com.au Beerwah 5494 0499 or Maroochydore 5443 4545 MAY 29 2013 |

Caloundra Family History Group

Community News Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade Open Day Contributed by Helen Jakeman - secretary

Our brigade is participating in the first Rural Fire Service Day which is to be held on Saturday, June 1. The Rural Fire Service Day is a state-wide celebration of dedication and commitment of the 34,000 men and women who volunteer their time to help keep Queensland communities safe. The Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade would like to invite community members to visit our Fire Station on Maleny Road between 11.00am and 2.00pm to have a look at our station, vehicles and equipment. We will be having a free sausage sizzle on the day and information will be available on the many aspects of the volunteer service we offer our community, for example: • how to prepare your family and home against the threat of bushfire • the regulations and information required for obtaining a ‘Permit to Light a Fire’ • how to become a volunteer member of our brigade So, please take advantage of this great opportunity to visit us on Saturday, June 1 any time between 11.00am and 2.00pm to meet the men and women from our brigade who volunteer their time to keep our community safe.

Contributed by Roz Kuss What a lovely afternoon the members of Caloundra Family History Research enjoyed at the general meeting held on Thursday, May 16. The group’s 20th birthday was celebrated at afternoon tea with a cake that was cut by two lady members – Brenda Smith who joined at the original meeting in 1993 (and is still a current member), and Helen Cossar, the newest member to join the group. Members were asked to bring along an ancestral antique and tell the audience of its great historical importance to their family. Thirteen members answered the call and their special pieces of memorabilia were a wonderful array of articles. The guest speaker at the June general meeting on Thursday, June 20 will be Bribie local, historian and raconteur, Dr James Lergessner, who will talk on his Cloudland book ‘Queen of the Dancehalls’. Further information on all activities conducted by the group is available from Valerie on 5437 3879, June on 5493 2679, or Roz on 5493 1197. The group has an email address at caloundrafamilyres@y7mail.com Our website address is www.caloundrafamilyhistory.org.au

At their Maleny store, they have a wide range of white goods, TV’s, beds, lighting, kitchen appliances … everything you need locally without having to go to the coast. They offer all the tops brands, makes and models, and if they don’t have it in store they will happily order it in for you. Within the team they have a great mix of skills, experience and knowledge about all their products, and they will always work for you the customer.

Similar larger stores tend to get sent a product to push onto people by their head office, while at Maleny Bi-Rite they will listen to you and what you want, and offer advice on a range of available products, ensuring the best match possible. “Going that extra mile for the customer is what makes us different,” says Pat. “Only recently I delivered a fridge to a new customer, and when I saw the old one pushed to the side in the garage I offered to take it away for them, free of charge – they were amazed! “We like to do as much for our customers as we can, safe in the knowledge they will spread the good word and come back again and again,” he said. And the same support is offered if there is ever a problem with your purchase or warranty – you are guaranteed that their back-up and service is second to none. Pat and Nerina are also proud to have recently become Miele agents, which means they can

‘Awesome’ was the description by Mooloolah State School Year 1 and Year 2 students, of a recent three-part workshop. The art segment of the workshop culminated in the production of three stunning collages on canvas: a shimmering school of silver mullet, a vibrant-scaled winding snake and a very handsome spiny echidna; all characters in the book ‘Gubbi Gubbi Animal Friends’. Christine Stuart is co-author of this delightful newly-released indigenous story book. Representing the local Gubbi Gubbi community, Christine led the cultural workshop segment and captivated the children with descriptions and demonstrations of Gubbi Gubbi culture and customs.

Together with Christine, the children crushed ochre for face and arm painting, made music with didgeridoo and clap sticks, and sang and danced. In an environmental segment, the children learned from local woman Jan Kesby about the threatened Richmond Birdwing Butterfly and its’ life-stages and habitat, and about bush tucker plants, leaves and berries. The students had so much fun and learned so many interesting things that they quite forgot they were working! Curriculum components of art, culture and environmental studies were followed up with reading, recounting and wonderful creative writing!

Local student receives royal recognition Imagine your surprise if you opened a letter addressed to you, written by the Queen of England. That's what happened to nine-year-old Georgia Bamford last week. The Year 4 student at St Paul’s Lutheran Primary School student was in shock when she received it. "I just couldn't believe it! I screamed!" she said. Georgia had written to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, several weeks previously for a project she was completing, as part of the Gifted Education program at St Paul's. "I wrote her a letter, asking her for some information on how she had changed the world," she said. "I never expected a letter back!" Her mum, Karyn, framed the letter, and immediately emailed the Gifted Education specialist, Mrs Christine Gillions, who was ecstatic about the news. "Other children in ‘The Notables’ class have also received letters from people like Bindi Irwin, and Jessica Watson. It’s fantastic to see the responses our children are getting!” she said. Gifted Education at St Paul’s has gone from strength to strength this year, with identified students from Years 3 to 6 now able to attend a variety of programs. Georgia’s class will be presenting at the school’s inaugural ‘Night of

Gifted education growing from strength to strength What have Queen Elizabeth II, Bindi Irwin and Jessica Watson got in common? All of these notable people have recently replied to letters from gifted and talented students at St Paul’s Lutheran Primary School. Last year, St Paul’s appointed a highly qualified and experienced Gifted Education specialist, Mrs Christine Gillions. Since then St Paul’s has become a leader in gifted education with a rigorous and continuous identification process, parent information and training sessions and an array of Gifted Education programs from Prep to Year 6. One set of Gifted Education classes is ‘The Notables’ where gifted and talented students from Years 3 to 6 have been independently researching an eminent person. These young students’ work will come to life at the ‘Night of Notables’ on June 4, when, dressed as their ‘Notable’, they will undoubtedly impress and educate their parents and St Paul’s Lutheran staff proudly model 'The Dot' t-Shirts

members of the wider community. Meeting the needs of gifted and talented students is also an important part of the job for the regular class teachers at St Paul’s. All teachers have ongoing training in Proactive Differentiated Instruction. In preparation for ‘International Dot Day’ on September 15, many of the teachers have purchased The Dot t-Shirts and are wearing them to remind themselves, fellow teachers and students that teaching and learning is about effectively taking on challenges to achieve personal bests. The Dot T-Shirt reads ‘Just make a mark and see where it takes you!’ which Mrs Gillions said is a perfect fit for St Paul’s. “At St Paul’s, both teachers and students are sharing the message to start now, right where you are, put on your critical and creative thinking cap and, with courage and self-belief, work towards the destination of optimal achievement,” she said. Beerwah Cross Country

Little relay for lifers

Contributed by Matthew Potter Beerwah State School recently held our 2013 Cross Country Event. Students wore their house colours proudly and cheered loudly as competitors from Prep through to Year 7 took to the track. The day commenced with the nine to 13 years events. Once again there were some close finishes and excellent displays of sportsmanship as students battled for the top three positions and the opportunity to gain selection into the School Cross Country Team. After lunch it was the Prep to Year 3 students who put their stamina to the test. It was also great to see so many parents in attendance cheering on our young competitors. 1st Mellum, 2nd Stanley, 3rd Coochin and 4th Blue Gum.

The children of Landsborough Community Kindergarten recently held their own mini ‘Relay for Life’ walk. The aim of the event was to raise money for the Queensland Cancer Council and in turn to sponsor one of their teachers participating in the Kawana Waters ‘Relay for Life’. The children followed a marked out course, completing a maximum of 20 laps. Around the track they participated in fun activities such as bubble blowing, paper streamers, musical instruments, face / hand painting, balloons and stickers to record their laps. For each lap completed, the children raised money from sponsors for their efforts. The Kindy displayed a tally chart to record money raised and support the children's understanding of this worthwhile cause. Everyone was encouraged to wear purple, the official colour for Relay for Life. The relay concluded with an official closing ceremony, presentation of certificates of participation and a shared morning tea.

GCCC Biking in Beerwah

As part of the English Humanities program at Glasshouse Country Christian College, students are to engage in the indigenous culture of the local region. Fortunately in Beerwah there are strong reminders of Aboriginal culture whenever we head outdoors. All of our local landmarks are named by the Aboriginal people and feature prominently in their folklore. GCCC’s Year 9 Coordinator, Colleen Devitt decided the best way to explore the indigenous culture was to get the students outdoors and organised a bike ride to Mount Tibrogargan. “This way the students could see, smell and feel the culture of the indigenous people up close,” she said. The first stage of the adventure was a bike readiness session. Some of the students hadn’t ridden a bike for years and many of the loaned bikes were a little worse for wear. Erek Smith from Beerwah Cycles came to the rescue by visiting GCCC and running a hands-on workshop for all the students. Erek was helped by GCCC’s Chairman Erik Dodwell and groundskeepers Mark Becker, Tim Siggs and John Vreeling. When the big day arrived, the grey, leaden skies didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits but the following rain did dampen a few backs later on in the afternoon. As it was a big ride, involving more than 80 Year 9 students, the Beerwah Police helped by escorting the group some of the way and closing a section of the road for a short time to increase the safety of riders and drivers. The two-wheeled excursion was also helped by volunteers Corry and Frans Mens from Beerwah Bike Users Group. The students loved the experience, pushed themselves really hard and had ear to ear grins at the end of the day.

Are you ready for the Show?

The countdown to the Maleny Show is definitely on with only a couple of days until this year’s event kicks off, and it is expected to go off with a bang especially with the spectacular fireworks display (sponsored by Landsborough IGA) at 7.00pm on Friday night. This year the Show Society has brought together the biggest range of events, entertainment and excitement yet, and there’s something for the whole family from 8.00am each day going late into the night. While the main oval will host all the magnificent horse events each day, the entertainment oval will be the place to be with performances and events running both days of the show. The entertainment oval will feature everything from the celebrity cook off, reptiles and snakes, whip cracking shows and comedy, camel rides, stunt bike shows, cheer leading, dancers, and the QLD Police pipes and drum band. You can also check out The Silly Billies, along with the traditional displays from local producers where you can learn about alpacas or bee keeping. Working dog displays, guess the weight of the fat bullock, animal nursery, wood chopping, fireworks and the ever popular rodeo are all ready to thrill and entertain the crowds. The Ute Muster is on Saturday morning as well as a Grand Parade each day. On Friday, skydivers will jump into the grounds to mark the start of the Official Opening. Beef cattle displays and judging runs both days, as does the Dairy Pavilion, where you can get a real hands on experience of how milking was done in the old days, with the Nambour High school presenting their historical milking display. You can milk a cow by hand, separate the cream and make butter as well. If you’re more game, try some of the fast and furious rides down side show alley - fun for big kids and little alike. To make sure you don’t miss out on what you want to see and to get a complete program of events go to the Maleny Show Society website www.malenyshowsociety.org.au Business feature

A beautiful day

A group of us from Elimbah Uniting Church recently went on a day trip. Our first visit was to the Ginger Factory, as we were visiting with Kangaroo Bus Lines we received a discount in the Ginger Factory. I then spent a long time in the Herb shop across the road and there is the Nutworks where they have free viewing windows, where you can watch the process of shelling macadamias, and they were coating the nuts with chocolate at the second window. We had a picnic lunch at Alexandra Headlands and after lunch we called in at Go Green Nursery at Glenview run by a nice young couple, who are very keen on natives. From there we went on to Feel-N-Seedy at Glass House Mountains - what a wonderful nursery. Although Andrew was away, we met Sian who is a lady after my own heart, very passionate about our native plants. This young couple seemed to be doing it a bit tough and would benefit from local support. The work they have done in just over 12 months is incredible. Glass House you have a treasure - I will be back Sian, with some friends who were unable to come on the day. Native plants are good for our environment; they need to be cared for, we are losing so many with developers clearing so much of our natural bushland. Thanks to Phil our driver, who parked beside my car and managed to fit in all my bargains! And to the friends who supported me on the day. Ruth English Elimbah

Save our koalas

Thank you for your article highlighting the impact that a proposed new Steve Irwin Way / Bruce Highway interchange will have on 75 hectares of forest, including critically endangered subtropical forest and the habitat of the last remaining koalas in Caloundra. If this proposal is allowed to go ahead it will – to our everlasting shame – result in the local extinction of Australia’s most universally recognised and iconic animal. It will also see the destruction of lowland subtropical rainforest – a nationally-recognised critically endangered ecosystem – along with the demise of other threatened species in the hinterland. That an alternative proposal has already been put forward that could be constructed without so much as the felling of a single tree makes the planned development even more incomprehensible and reprehensible. So clearly, if this environmental and ecological disaster is to be avoided, we are all going to have to make sure our voices are heard – loud and clear. The Save the Steve Irwin Way Forest group is spearheading the campaign and I would ask everyone who feels that it is time to say ‘enough, and no further’ to the politicians, planners and money-men, to join us; first by going online and signing the Save Steve Irwin Forest petition at www.communityrun.org/petitions/save-the-iconicforest-at-the-north-end-of-steve-irwin-way-1. Also, please visit the group’s website at

www.iconicforest.wix.com/sunshinecoast, and stay in touch on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ pages/Save-the-Iconic-Forest-at-the-North-End-ofSteve-Irwin-Way. And please let the politicians know the strength of your feelings (it is Federal election year after all). In particular, email Scott Emerson (Minister for Main Roads), Mark McCardle (Member for Caloundra) and Andrew Powel (Member for Glass House), none of whom considered it worthwhile attending the recent public meeting at Glenview. You will find their email addresses on the group’s website, on the contacts page. Please do not leave it to someone else; too much is at stake. Sharon Parfitt, Glass House Mountains

Why hide results

It is with great disappointment that we read that council has opted to hide results of a report for the specifically indentified motor sports development suggested for the area behind the Mooloolah Cemetery, especially as it is special habitat for endangered fauna and flora of our area. It seems unsuitable as it is close to the final resting place of many of our families. We put councillors in to represent us, the ratepayers, so surely we should be told of decisions they make on our behalf, not hide behind closed doors. J and R Aitken and Phil Siggers Beerwah

Political signage

Regarding the sign on Steve Irwin Way that was the subject of some concern, I wonder if it would still be offensive to your correspondent if it were a red sign rather than a blue one? Damian Petrie Mt Mellum

Election signage

What right do the common people have to expect Mal Brough to obey council laws that everyone else has to? These signs are election campaigning in very poor disguise. Neville Mc Donald Glass House Mountains

Mal Brough

In answer to the shy correspondent ‘once bitten twice shy’ in last week’s GCNews, yes I do remember when Mal Brough was the Member for Longman and Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Families and Community Service and I look forward very much to being represented by such an outstanding local representative and extremely effective Minister. Annette James Glass House Mountains

Political letters

I enjoy reading Glasshouse Country News and its focus on local issues, however I am surprised at some recent anonymous letters which appear to be in contravention of your editorial policy which states that "writer's letters must focus on issues and not be personal attacks on individuals". The legality or otherwise of election signage is a legitimate issue, but why publish personal attacks anonymously? Are they coming from opposing political party members perhaps? I have never been and never will be a member of any political party. Rob Haese Beerwah Editor’s note As it is still months away from the election, we hadn’t put our ‘Election Guidelines for the letters page’ in place. During this time we do insist that contributors must have their name printed under their letters. As it seems that the campaign has begun – we will now insist on this. I would also like to clarify that even when people’s names are not printed – they are still required to supply a name and contact details to GCNews so the writer is never anonymous. Regards,

Please keep your letters under 300 words, your name, address and daytime phone number must be supplied. Letters must focus on issues and not be personal attacks on individuals. Letters may be edited.

Share your views and win At GCNews we love our readers to share their views on important issues in our local community, and to thank you for your efforts, we will choose one letter at random each month to receive a free ‘Family Pass’ to Australia Zoo. Citizenship ceremony

It was a great honour to meet some of the regions newest citizens and welcome them to our community at a citizenship ceremony in Beerwah. Enjoying the views across Turner park, more than 130 local residents officially became the Sunshine Coast’s newest Australian Citizens at a ceremony that included ‘Welcome to Country’ and Aboriginal dancing performed by Lyndon Davis and the Gubbi Gubbi Dance Troupe.

Old Gympie Road

Rehabilitation of Old Gympie Road is nearing completion and there’s been a good overall result from the work that will mean less maintenance into the future. There was very little substrate on the road which has now been significantly improved and that has meant the level of the road has been raised. You might notice that the sides of the embankment are being carefully battered and the road widened in areas for better line marking, making the conditions better for travel on this well used road.

Green June

It’s a month of eco-friendly fun in June with more than 20 festivals, events and workshops featuring in this year’s calendar. There’s a huge array of activities that focus on sustainable living including the Floating Land Festival, Sunshine Coast World Environment Day and Living Smart Glossies Awards. Check council’s website to find out more about the practical workshops and forums on food, backyard biodiversity and energy happening throughout Green June.

Jenny McKay

Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 Wild dogs are a serious issue and failure to control them can result in livestock losses, attacks on domestic pets and the loss of native fauna. Council is supporting more than 20 local area community groups on more than 90 private residential properties to undertake a proactive wild dog baiting program over the next month. Council officers are available to assist with education and action to reduce the impact of wild dogs and locals are encouraged to report wild dog sightings and incidents to council. Council has been undertaking weed control activities in the area adjacent to the horse trail at Mooloolah Valley to stop the spread of para grass. It’s one of many weed species to keep an eye on to make sure it’s not spreading in the area. There’s strong enthusiasm in the Sunshine Coast community for the preservation of our heritage and a symposium was held recently to explore what the future holds for the heritage sector. Interesting and experienced industry professionals spoke on a range of topics including bringing small museums into social media and creating digital stories. It was a good opportunity for the region’s heritage volunteers to develop their knowledge and skills in the industry and a chance to meet with others to share experiences and ideas. The first Multicultural Seniors Expo was a wonderful event attended by over 120 visitors from nine different national backgrounds including Uruguay, Japan and Germany. The expo brought together the range of not-for-profit and government agencies who offer a multitude of services to the older population. It’s a great initiative and so important that people from different cultural backgrounds know what services are available to them on the Sunshine Coast. See you at the next Mooloolah breakfast community meeting on Thursday, June 6 at 7.30am at Thunderbird café. www.gcnews.com.au

Live it up in...

Landsborough I

f you can’t live in Landsborough, then the next best thing is to Live it Up in Landsborough. The Landsborough locals have always known what a special town they live in – over the years it has been able to maintain the character and charm of a quaint country town, while still providing all the services and requirements of today’s residents. Having long been known as a ‘Heritage Town’, Landsborough is still home to many of the area’s original buildings including the Landsborough Shire Council Chambers – now the Museum, as well as the iconic Landsborough Hotel, the beautiful School of Arts Hall, the CWA hall, the old Courthouse and Post Office.

The blending of the original buildings with the more contemporary styling has kept a quaint country town feel about the township, appealing to both the locals and visitors who stop in on their way up the range. When you go into the Landsborough Pub for either lunch or dinner, you could be in a traditional country pub in any part of rural Queensland, the original elements have been retained, the decor is quaint, but more than anything, it’s the feel of the place. Country pubs have always been known as the hubs of country towns and when you call in on the ‘Meal specials night’ you’d think most of the town is there with you.

The newest business on the block is Cribb Street Meats, that would have to be described as a traditional style butchery. When you think of old style butchers, they are real characters – enjoying a bit of a laugh and banter with their customers. If you haven’t met Shane and Bob then you will be pleased to know that’s the kind of service you will get. They also follow the philosophy that they aren’t just in the community to run their business and make money, but they’re part of the community. They sponsor the local footie club raffles, offering a regular special deal for RSL members and a monthly lucky draw for customers that spend over $50.00 in one purchase.

Live it up in...

Landsborough Cafe on 8 and Rejuvon 8 are located in what was the old Post Office, interestingly it wasn’t just Landsborough’s old Post Office, the building was moved from Caboolture where it had served them as a Post Office. The girls at Cafe on 8 and Rejuvon 8 have done a spectacular job bringing out the best in this lovely old building. They’ve creating a really warm and inviting place to drop in for a quick coffee and cake, or for a spectacular gourmet breakfast or lunch – as well as a full range of beauty services. Their friendly and personal approach is what you might have expected in days gone by. There is something special about going into a cafe when the staff welcome you by name and remember what your usual coffee is that brings a smile to your face.

The BP at Landsborough might not be located in a historic site, but it’s definitely not your impersonal ‘Road House’ where customers are little more than a pump number to the attendants. Earlier this year, following the cyclone where many people lost power – the crew at Landsborough BP went into ‘emergency’ mode. Thousands of dockets were done manually and many IOU’s were issued, showing just how important good old fashioned customer service is to them. In days gone by, many of the local women were engaged in a range of craft activities – making both decorative and functional items for the home. Although the same emphasis is not placed on craft today, one activity has been taken on by

many local ladies (and some fellas) is the art of scrap booking. In this day and age of digital photography, scrap booking is a vital way to make sure that we are able to create permanent records of our family and friends, in both special events and our day to day lives. Joybells Scrapbooking has made this task so much easier by providing a great range of materials and accessories for creating the spectacular scrap books. They also provide lessons and plenty of advice for their customers. These businesses work hard to satisfy their customers, they take pride being part of a great local community, they embrace being part of heritage town and look forward to being part of its future.

Cribb St Butchery

Business feature

Cribb Street Butchery recently opened in Landsborough, bringing together two unique characters – Shane Spencer and Bob Allen who not only believe in the importance of bringing their customers great meat, but also of being an integral part of the local community. Many locals will remember Bob from his business – Bob’s Butchers that operated on Simpson Street in Beerwah for six years from 2005 to 2011. Shane who is a butcher, chef and pig farmer is the son of a butcher, so he has plenty of experience and knowledge behind him when giving customers advice on their purchases. Shane explains that they only use female pigs in their pork products as they make better meat with a sweeter taste. Bob proudly says that their meat is always fresh, is of excellent quality, well trimmed and hormone and steroid free – so customers can be confident that they are getting the best quality meats at very affordable prices. They stock grass fed beef (Prime Yearling) because

it has a greater depth of flavour than grain fed. So that customers can get all their meats in the one place they also conveniently stock frozen fish such as Cod, Red Emperor and Smoked Cod. Every month, they will be raffling off a $150.00 meat tray with all the proceeds going to Silver Lining Pet Rescue, which is a wonderful organisation that re-homes lost, unwanted, abused or abandoned animals. Tickets will be onsale in the store – so don’t forget to drop in and buy a couple. And if you’re after pet bones, they have those for free – they just ask you give a gold coin donation to Silver Lining Pet Rescue. They are also pleased to be sponsoring the local Hinterland Lions AFL club with weekly meat raffles to assist in the club’s fundraising. And Ex-Servicemen / Veterans who spend $50.00 in-store will also receive a free kilo of sausages. For the regular shopper they also have a rewards card program – ask them for your card next time you’re in the shop.

On display in the new shop is a leather clock that was made for Shane’s father in 1971 to display in his Condell Park butchery in Sydney. Also on display is a painting of Bob’s Butchers in Beerwah which was painted by a local artist AL Welsh. To make it easier for customers, they have extended opening hours – 7.00am to 5.00pm Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 7.00am to 7.00pm on Thursdays, and 7.00am – 2.00pm on Saturdays.

History Committee

Remembering Nev With the recent passing of Nev Anning, Peachester History Committee has lost a valued member and good friend; however, with the rest of Glasshouse Country community, we are able to celebrate the great contribution Nev has made to this district over many years. A natural historian with an excellent memory, Nev has played a significant role in many of our local history projects. His first-hand knowledge and experience in timber, farming and the building industry have been invaluable for our local history publications, and in keeping these skills alive for younger generations. At historical events, Nev enjoyed sharing his knowledge of old tools and equipment, and often demonstrated pioneer skills like building a shingle roof, as in the photograph below from 1998. Nev was also passionate about preserving the memory of local servicemen and women, and took a leading role in our memorial project at the Peachester Cemetery, encouraging families to order plaques for people who enlisted in this area, but are buried elsewhere. He also initiated the Remembrance Day service at Peachester Cemetery, which has become an annual event supported by the Beerwah-Peachester RSL. A current project, planned with Nev, is to produce a booklet containing service records and stories of all ex-service personnel buried in the Peachester Cemetery or honoured with memorial plaques. We aim to have the booklet ‘Peachester Remembers’ ready for Remembrance Day 2013. The Peachester History Committee meeting on Sunday, June 2 will take the form of a celebration of Nev's role in our community. Members, family and friends are invited to share favourite photos, stories and memorabilia.

Thanksgiving Day

May 25 this year was the National Day of Thanksgiving in Australia. When we hear of ‘Thanksgiving Day’ we tend to think of the United States of America and their roast turkey and all the trimmings. That day was instituted by the Pilgrim Fathers who gave thanks to God for their safe arrival in America. For them it meant freedom from persecution for their religious beliefs and an opportunity to build a new life in a new land. For many people, myself included, Australia has meant the opportunity to build a new life free from the past with its class distinctions and to live in a nation with an egalitarian attitude. I found that Australians took new arrivals at face value and not based on their past and where they came from. This is something to give thanks to God and to Australians for. So often we can take things for granted until we are confronted with people and situations beyond our normal experience. ‘Thanks’ start when someone does something for us that

WEDNESDAYS *Mooloolah (Paget Road) 9.00am SUNDAY *Beerwah (Peachester Road) 9.00am

they didn’t have to do. A previous edition of this paper gave thanks to the work that many volunteers do in the community. There was also an article that gave thanks to the support for the school chaplains. Each of those articles can remind us to reflect and ask who we can give thanks to for the way they improve our lives. What would our life be like without what they do, often going beyond what they have to do? The Bible tells us that we are made in the image of God, the caring for others and going beyond ourselves is surely part of that image? Taking time off one day of the year to give thanks to God for that caring that has made such a big difference to our lives is a worthwhile exercise.

Real Estate Real estate sales looking more positive

The Queensland residential property market has posted positive results for the year ending March, according to the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ). The Sunshine Coast also recorded a positive result, with its median price up 1.2 per cent to $440,000 over the March quarter. REIQ Sunshine Coast zone chair Lloyd Edwards said the market had transitioned from having a wait and-see mentality to being optimistic. “There has been a realisation that the worst is behind us and the future is looking much brighter,” he said. Mr Edwards said further evidence of the passing of the bottom of the market included the increased price-point of entry-level properties. “We had strong demand for properties priced around the $350,000-mark, but this stock has now been depleted,” he said. “Buyers wanting to purchase affordable properties now generally have to pay about $400,000. Low interest rates were also underpinning the market, he said, with solid growth forecast in the months ahead.

Blood, Sweat & Cheers Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country

Beerwah Golf Club

Contributed by Jenny Kelly One of our favourite games was played on Thursday, when the girls invite the boys to play a round of golf. We had 90 players compete in a 2 Ball Ambrose for trophies donated by Glasshouse Country Meats. We would like to thank the new owners, Murray and Michelle, for their support and I'm sure the lucky winners have already been in to the butcher shop to check out all the goodies on offer. Our winners on the day were husband and wife team John and Noelene Annakin, with a score of 65.75 Nett. They were followed by Col Penney and Jen Kelly with 66.5 Nett, who took second on a count back from another husband and wife team, Geoff and Sue Williamson. NTP's went to Trevor and Mavis Brimelow on 2, Pam Gormley and A. Warry on 5, Barb Whitfield and Frank Buckley on the 16, and Viki Bartel and Sue Greentree took out the 18th. The ball rundown went to 71 Nett.

Beegee’s Soccer News

Contributed by Frank Doonan Our women’s team had a win on Friday night 3 – 1, they played well in front of a good crowd. The players would like to thank the support the locals give them, good goal Daley, thanks to the under 17’s players that play for the team most weeks. Next Friday we have two games on, over 35’s at 6.30pm and the 4th div play at 8.30pm. Both teams will be out for big games to keep in touch with the top 4. Come down and support the old fella’s in the 35’s. These blokes put on a good show and don’t forget meals are on with a new menu available. Our seniors played Kawana at Kawana on Saturday and both teams went down. Things will turn around, next week we travel to at Caloundra 3.00pm and 5.00pm kick offs. Our under 12 boys had a draw with Bribie, the boys got off to a slow start but came out for the second half full steam ahead, showing plenty of skill in both attack and defence. Aiden got the man of the match award. Many thanks to our stand-in ‘super’ coach Steve Minns. Saturday saw the under 13 girls go down to Caboolture. The girls never gave up, which is always nice to see. You will get them next time! The goal this week was scored by Agnes. Don’t forget to support the sponsors that support our club.

LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Get set to engage in stimulating, mind expanding conversations about travel and future horizons. However, watch out for defensive and grumpy partners on the home front. Just disappear off to your favourite coffee lounge, with your benevolent friends for joyful experiences. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 Why not take a fresh look at your home life and keep abreast of the changes that are needed there? Stay ahead of the curved balls that come up at the office or work situation. To avoid friction and stress make your moves with delicacy and finesse. A boost to your imagination. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 By month’s end, relationships are prosperous and delightful. You seem to be appreciated by sweet talking, flirty, flattering charmers. Just around the corner is the most interesting interaction, especially over breakfast, lunch or dinner. How much light-hearted fun can you take? CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 Friendly Mercury and charming Venus join together with Jupiter in your work sector. A great time to use interactive intelligence at the office to enliven the work zone to full, happy efficiency. Ideas and chances for profit are flying around but avoid a desire for immediate results now.

AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 The rest of this month is filled with genial, lively, smart socialisers who beam up your brightness. The visionary aspects of Jupiter, joining with curious Mercury and harmonious Venus gives the insights and information you need to present your charm to resolve any minor problems. PISCES February 20 – March 20 At the end of the month, with Mercury and Venus joining affable Jupiter, all talks and interactions become deliciously engaging. Perhaps host a home event or family reunion and enjoy the stimulations of extra good company and delightful conversations. The signs are good fortune. ARIES March 21 – April 20 There is potent energy to have deliciously delightful encounters that offer flirty, joyful pleasures if you wish to enjoy yourself. Take some midday breaks and go to new and different cafes. A lunchtime treat with a charming friend leads to a happy talk with an intellectual flair. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 You could be the happy beneficiary of luck or generosity. The trends are very good for improving relationships. Jobs and ambitions claim your time and attention rewardingly, especially if you remember now, that a change of mind or compromising is wiser than standing stubbornly.

GEMINI May 22 – June 21 Interstate and overseas friends making contact, either by phone or on line, draw your attention and starts happy mornings that turn into midday arrangements. With Mars entering your sign by the end of this month you’re ready for a month of spontaneous action and initiative. CANCER June 22 – July 22 After this last week’s full Moon and the amazing line up of the previous three weeks of eclipses conditions now favour a thorough study of finances. This is the time to look at your income, and outgoings, assets and creditors, so as to approach any private borrowings carefully. LEO July 23 – August 22 It’s good news to come out of the last three week’s developments as you connect with exciting, charming friends. With an Aquarius Moon it’s likely to be freedom loving time, rather than emotionally sentimental. A follow up to previous nonevents sees better partnerships now. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 A quietly relaxed mind and body is of great importance by the end of this month. So don’t waste energy. Stay on a steady course and see if you can clear up some deadwood jobs that have been impeding your progress. Public recognition elates all your senses, bringing fresh ideas.

Brian Sullivan, he could do everything right." P: "Wow. Some guy then." C: "He always knew the quickest way to go in traffic and avoid traffic jams. Not like me, I always seem to get stuck in them. But Brian, he never made a mistake, and he really knew how to treat a woman and make her feel good. He would never answer her back even if she was in the wrong; and his clothing was always immaculate, shoes highly polished too. He was the perfect man! He never made a mistake. No one could ever measure up to Brian Sullivan." P: "An amazing fellow. How did you meet him?" C: "Well, I never actually met Brian. He died. I'm married to his widow." Hugh Jones, Beerwah

A man caught a taxi just going by and the cabbie said, "Perfect timing. You're just like Brian." Passenger: "Who?" Cabbie: "Brian Sullivan. He's a guy who did everything right all the time." P: "There are always a few clouds over everybody." C: "Not Brian Sullivan. He was a terrific athlete. He could have won the Grand Slam at tennis, golf with the pros, and sing like an opera baritone. He also danced like a Broadway star and you should have heard him play the piano. He was an amazing guy." P: "Sounds like he was something really special." C: "There's more. He had a memory like a computer, remembering everybody's birthday. He knew all about wine, which foods to order and which fork to eat them with. He could fix anything. Not like me. I change a fuse, and the whole street blacks out. But
