Hi Everyone... It is probably fair to say that this week’s edition definitely has a bit of a focus on the fact that this Friday and Saturday is the Maleny Show. Generally our front cover in the lead up to the show features one of the fun show elements - maybe a game or the rides from sideshow alley, or an icon shot of a woodchopper, or a horse going over a jump. However, you will have noticed that this year it is a little different. The theme for this year’s Maleny Show is ‘Celebrating the past, present and future of farming’, so we have highlighted two young future farmers. I am looking forward to checking out the small farmers’ tent on the entertainment oval first thing on Friday morning to meet some of our future farmers and food producers. The school session, which will be running from 9.30am, features students from Glasshouse Christian College and Mapleton State School. The show brings together so many great displays, demonstrations and entertainment. To get a better idea of what is on offer check out the 2019 Show Program in our centre pages. Why not pull out the program and take it with you when you head to Regards, the showgrounds.

Wander through this tranquil garden or just sit by the peaceful lake and watch the gaggles of friendly geese, herons, waterfowl and parrots. Set on one acre, the garden has a wonderful variety of beautiful flowering plants, a vegetable garden, and sculptures dotted throughout. As you wander further on you will find the fairy del fairies visiting the garden, giving you an opportunity to take some fairy magic home with you. A bare paddock eight years ago, the formal plan was to design a number of rooms where each contained its own feel. Apart from the rose gardens and camelia zones, other rooms include forest, meadow, fruit orchard, courtyard and pond. Gravel paths and lawn strips allow the garden to reveal itself slowly, offering viewpoints that give pause for surprise at the contrasts of texture and colour.

Local News New exit to open as diverging diamond takes shape The latest milestone for the Bruce Highway upgrade between Caloundra Road and the Sunshine Motorway is in sight with the new northbound exit to Steve Irwin Way about to open to traffic. Transport and Main Roads director general Neil Scales said the current northbound exit 188 loop from the Bruce Highway to Caloundra and Landsborough would be permanently closed from early this week (weather permitting) and replaced with a new exit about 600 metres to the south. “This new exit 188 will be part of Australia’s first diverging diamond interchange (DDI), which is rapidly taking shape at Caloundra Road,” Mr Scales said. “The exit will join Steve Irwin Way at a signalised intersection where motorists can either continue towards Landsborough and the hinterland or turn right to towards Caloundra and the beach.” Mr Scales said further traffic changes were programmed for the project over the coming months.

A Christmas festival has been held in Maleny for at least 75 years. For the past decade Maleny Commerce has hosted the annual event in Maple Street, held on the last day of the school year on a Friday night. For the past few years much of the work has been coordinated by the very dedicated Karen Shaw from Forest Heart Nursery, who has worked with a small group of dedicated community volunteers and Christmas lovers to bring the festival to life. Karen said she really loved the street party atmosphere of the event, the thrill of closing the main street, showcasing the local musicians and dancers, and the fun of being able to catch up and relax with friends and neighbours. Maleny Commerce president Nicole Hilton said that Karen had done a wonderful job in creating a truly unique community celebration. Sadly for the chamber, Karen has decided that it is time to pass the baton to other enthusiastic community members. Nicole said to ensure this important community event continued, the chamber had recently called a meeting of all the major service groups and clubs in Maleny to discuss the idea of sharing the tasks of coordinating the Christmas festival between the groups. “Fortunately, as Karen has put together a comprehensive task list and instructions/ directions for what the job entails, these will be a great asset to the future organiser/s,” Nicole said.
Diane, Scarlett and Dawn enjoying the 2017 festival “I’m really pleased to say that both our local Lions and Rotary clubs have already committed to getting involved and we are now keen to spread the net wider to see if there is anyone else in the community who would be happy to volunteer their time to keep this community tradition alive. “The hard reality is that the event won’t be able to continue without additional volunteers putting up their hands to help,” Nicole said. Peachester park fight continues
Local election breakdown At the time of printing, the wash up for the seat of Fisher was United Australia Party 2,913 (3.36%), Australian Labor Party 19,487 (22.5%), Greens 10,304 (11.9%), One Nation 7,422 (8.57%), Liberal National Party 43,782 (50.55%), Fraser Anning’s Conservatives 1,361 (1.57%), and Love Australia or Leave 1,340 (1.55%). The two party preferred result was LNP 62.7%, ALP 37.3%. But how did we vote across Glass House and the Blackall Ranges? The summary shows that, overall, the area represents a high level of conservative (right of centre) political views, with 38.2% supporting the left of politics and 61.78% supporting the right. This is slightly more left-leaning than the rest of Fisher (34.4% left, 65.6% right). The overall Fisher position has moved to the right since the last federal election in 2016 when the left/right balance was 37.52% left, 62.48% right. In our region the Greens polled better than the Fisher average (15.61% compared with 11.9%), as did One Nation (11.11% / 8.57%), while the LNP was less popular locally (43.49% compared to 50.55%). The other parties were roughly the same locally as for the whole of Fisher. The two party preferred split for our region at this election – LNP 57.77% / ALP 42.23% – is slightly closer than the overall Fisher split of LNP 62.7% / ALP 37.3%. As a comparison, in 2016 the overall Fisher two party preferred was LNP 59.06% / ALP 40.94%.

Peachester locals are not resting on their laurels and are keeping the fires burning in their quest to have a new park dedicated in their township. When residents discovered that a patch of Crown land at the corner of High Street and Peachester Road was to be auctioned off for housing, alarm bells rang as locals were under a long-standing impression that the land was going to be given to the community as a familyfriendly park. After some quick action, letter writing, a petition and furious phone calls, the Minister for Natural Resources, Mines and Energy Dr Anthony Lynham halted the land sale until his department could have discussions with Sunshine Coast Council about the future of the park. A well-attended community meeting at the Peachester Hall reinforced to locals and to local councillor Rick Baberowski and state Member for Glass House Andrew Powell that the people of Peachester were dedicated to making this park a reality. Another community meeting and demonstration has been planned for Sunday, June 2 at the site of the proposed park – corner High Street and Peachester Road – starting at 3pm. Everyone is welcome to come along and hear how the fight is going. Parking will be limited, so people are encouraged to park at the Peachester Hall and walk the short distance back to the park. To keep up with the campaign, join their dedicated Facebook page – just search for ‘A park for Peachester’.

Landsborough level crossing closure Planning to travel through Landsborough on the weekend? If so, take note, as you won’t be able to cross the train line as you normal do. Queensland Rail (QR) plans to close the Caloundra Street level crossing from 1am Saturday, June 1 until 5am Monday, June 3 while it undertakes some track maintenance works. “Next weekend, the Caloundra Street level crossing at Landsborough will be completely renewed, with crews excavating the road beneath the crossing to renew the formation, ballast, track and lay new asphalt to keep it safe for road and rail users,” QR CEO Nick Easy said. “This important work will keep the road at the crossing safe and in good condition for up to another 15 years.” Mr Easy said buses would replace trains during the closure between Bowen Hills and Gympie North, Shorncliffe and Kippa-Ring stations. For more information about the track closure visit https://translink.com.au/service-updates/227471. In a notice handed to Landsborough businesses, QR apologised for the inconvenience, as well as the noise that local residents will experience as a result of the track works. Traffic and pedestrians will be detoured, with cars directed to the Caloundra Street North level crossing (past the school) and foot traffic having to go up and over the tracks at the train station.
Another Landsborough in-fill proposal
It appears QR may not have been aware of local events, as they scheduled the level crossing closure for the same weekend as the Maleny Show, which could cause problems for people travelling to and from Maleny on Saturday. The level crossing closure is unrelated to plans for an overpass and the subsequent permanent closure of the current crossing. A reference group of Landsborough business, community and resident representatives was formed in late April after a public forum on the rail overpass proposal organised by the Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle. The reference group will aim to take account of all sides and all perspectives and form a cohesive vision to ensure the eventual overpass plans work best for the future of Landsborough. To find out more about the reference group and its activities, follow the updates on Mark McArdle’s webpage – www.markmcardlemp.com/ landsborough-rail-overpass-proposal.
Landsborough appears to be a hot-spot for infill development with yet another application submitted to Sunshine Coast Council to split up an existing large residential lot. The 11,440m2 block at 49 LandsboroughMaleny Road, just up the hill from Peace Park cricket oval, is to be split into seven house lots and two drainage/open space reserves. The existing residence is to be maintained on one of the new lots. The housing blocks will range in size from 756m2 to 1025m2. Engineering plans submitted with the application also show future development on the adjoining block (41 LandsboroughMaleny Road) containing a further five housing lots. The proposal appears to be consistent with the low density residential zoning of the area. Therefore, the council has deemed the development as ‘code assessable’, meaning it will not be advertised and no public submissions can be made. For more information go to https:// developmenti.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and search for ‘RAL19/0053’.

Vale Gwen Malcolm By Lea Parkes Back in 1980, when Bob and Gwen Malcolm brought their family to live on what was then described as a hobby farm in Glass House Mountains, neither they nor the rest of the local community had any idea of the positive contribution they would ultimately make to the area in the following decades. The family settled into life on their farm on Old Gympie Road, where macadamia nuts, custard apples and pecan nuts grew. Neither Gwen nor Bob knew anything about farming macadamias and Bob was doing reserve work in the Air Force so was away a lot. Gwen was on a steep learning curve in the beginning but she learnt by doing. She embraced expanding her knowledge and learnt how to farm, while getting to know her new community. After Gwen’s sudden passing on April 12 and in keeping with Gwen’s wishes, the family recently organised a celebration of her life, holding a long lunch so family and friends could come together to share in great food, good wine, talking, live music and, of course, native plants at the Glass House Mountains Hall. In her 40 years in Glasshouse Country, Gwen was well known and highly regarded for her love of our natural environment and her passion for retaining our unique surroundings for the benefit of future generations. This regard was clearly on show at the celebration of her life where many speakers shared stories about their part in Gwen’s journey, including Don Barlow who was one of the founders, along with Gwen, of Citizens against Quarry Expansion (CAQE) in the early 1990s. Gwen’s daughter Fiona explained to me that although CAQE lost a court case against Caloundra City Council, they managed to get numerous concessions on the quarry including the amount of rock that could be taken out and how the land was regenerated, which was unheard of at the time. “When CAQE lost the court case, instead of admitting defeat they changed tactics. Their strategy became around promoting the beauty and the uniqueness of the area and attracting tourists to enjoy the local natural beauty as a way of both sustaining the town economically and to prevent further degradation through quarries,” Fiona said. Gwen also became instrumental in forming the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) and continued to drive it forward.
encourage, engage and inspire others to become involved in her journey. For the cynical, this might be seen as subtle manipulation but because Gwen used her talent for good and her intentions were always to create a benefit for the person involved and for our local environment, this “superpower” was resolutely admired by all she used it on. The final speaker of the day was Talulah, Gwen’s eldest grand-daughter, who has clearly inherited Gwen’s love for the environment and her capacity to share and inspire others. I am confident that Gwen’s legacy will live on in this determined young woman with a clear passion to share the appreciation and importance of nature and our beautiful environment with others. Over the years, GMAN has been directly involved in many worthwhile community projects with a broad environmental protection agenda including the creation of the Glasshouse 100, development of a number of walking trails, building a native plant nursery and the creation of koala tree plantations. In 1996 GMAN was involved in the development of the Glasshouse Trail Run, Australia’s first 100 mile trail run event. Race director at the time Ian Javes said that the first event had five participants but with the support of Gwen and GMAN, by 2014 they had 80 runners participating. “GMAN members were actively involved in the event by manning the checkpoints throughout the night in the forest, providing support, soup, coffee and snacks for the runners,” Ian said. GMAN also built a number of tracks, the first being the Trachyte circuit linking Mount Tibrogargan and Mount Tibberoowuccum. Not only did they get grants but also physically built the track with support from National Parks. A number of GMAN’s original members were at Gwen’s celebration and current president Bernard Keyes, who spoke on the members’ behalf, acknowledged Gwen as being the heart and soul of the group and having the unique gift of being able to bring people together and encourage them to volunteer. Gwen’s amazing talent for plant identification and her capacity to be able to share that knowledge with others, in particular with the participants of her informal walking groups, was clearly admired by many. There was a consistent theme running through the stories that speakers told on the day – Gwen’s persuasive manner and how she was able to

Community News Five generations gather in time for Mother’s Day
YOU'RE NEVER FULLY DRESSED WITHOUT
A
By Sonia Clark Five generations of Desley Hooker’s family recently came together spanning a remarkable age range of more than 100 years. With the youngest family member Luna just three weeks old and Desley’s mother Mrs Jess Parker a hearty 101, the family members were able to come together just in time for Mother’s Day. Desley, who has lived in Landsborough for more than 40 years, said that since her mother celebrated her 100th birthday she had been keen to get a picture of the various generations in her family together. The photo was taken at her daughter Robyn’s property in Glenview and featured Robyn’s daughters Amanda and Hayley and their children Laila, Ryhland and baby Luna. “I’d been planning to get this photo as a surprise for my mother for some time and so on the Friday before Mother’s Day we were able to finally arrange it,” Desley said. “We were still able to have a little element of surprise for my mother as she had no idea what we’d planned, and we were all thrilled at how the photo turned out.” Desley said her mother and father had originally bought about 89 acres of land in Landsborough sometime in the late 1960s/early 1970s. Desley, a sprightly 75-year-old, explained that she and her husband eventually ended up buying a three-acre corner block off the family property when he retired, and she still lives there today. The stunning photo was, incredibly, taken on a mobile phone and by all accounts it will provide lasting memories for many years to come.

Music excellence program
Need for safe spaces
Many people experiencing social crisis and thinking of suicide present at hospital emergency rooms. While hospitals play a part they are not always the most suitable or helpful option under these circumstances. As a result, people with thoughts of suicide and their loved ones can be left feeling overwhelmed, exposed, vulnerable and unsafe. The Suicide Prevention in Communities Reference Group is hosting a facilitated community forum at Meridan Plains on Tuesday, June 4 at 5.30– 8.30pm so people in surrounding communities can contribute ideas about creating welcoming, safe, supportive home-like spaces as an alternative to emergency departments for people thinking of and planning suicide. Merilyn Keene, coordinator of the reference group, said this was a very topical issue as a gap in suicide prevention between help lines and hospitals was often mentioned in her conversations with people with lived experience of suicide, service providers and members of local communities on the Sunshine Coast. “Just about everyone has been touched by suicide in one way or another. Many have unsuccessfully sought welcoming and reliable places that help in this scenario, particularly for loved ones experiencing social and emotion crises,” she said. The Meridan Plains meeting will take place at the Kawana Forest Meeting Place, 60 Woodlands Boulevard Meridan Plains. To register go to https://events.humanitix.com.au/communityforum-kawana-forest. For support please contact Lineline on 13 11 14 or the Suicide Call Back Service 1300 659 467.

Two senior students from Beerwah State High School were recently selected to participate in the highly regarded North Coast Region Instrumental Music Excellence Program. This represents a significant achievement for year 12 student Salem Brown (percussion) and year 11 student Natalie Ross (French horn). The school’s instrumental music teacher, Clare Deady, said it was a massive achievement for the pair to gain a place in the program, which spans the North Coast region from Pine Rivers to Bundaberg. “We are thrilled that Salem and Natalie have been awarded places in the North Coast Region Symphonic Band. 92 students auditioned for a place and only 39 students were successful, so this is a wonderful opportunity for Salem and Natalie to extend their musical ability and talent,” Clare said. Salem and Natalie will attend two rehearsal days in term two and participate in a residential camp in the July school holidays.
Salem Brown and Natalie Ross been accepted into the Instrumental Music Excellence Program The culmination of the rehearsals and camp will be participation in the Maryborough Music Conference, which is attended by instrumental and classroom music teachers from throughout Queensland. Highlights from the program will be the ensemble working with international guest conductors visiting for the conference and presenting a gala concert.

By Sonia Clark The management committee behind the historic Mooloolah Public Hall is calling for fresh event ideas and community engagement to keep the much loved 1905 public hall viable into the future. Recently appointed publicity officer Jason Carroll is keen to ignite community interest. He is reaching out to community members to put their ideas forward about activities and events that would appeal to locals. “Being a community owned hall means the costs of maintaining this hall such as maintenance, upgrades, bills and insurance are primarily met by hiring out the hall and through the acquisition of various grants - so we need to use it or risk losing it,” Jason said. The hall is currently available for a range of uses from fitness, to social gatherings, weddings and meetings and can provide the perfect all-weather venue. The hall offers weekly yoga, craft, slimmers club and creative dance lessons, with more exercise and flexibility classes in the pipeline. “We need your help! Mooloolah Public Hall has been part of the Mooloolah community for over 110 years and to keep on going strong we are presently looking for new interest from our community – people can join either as a volunteer or become a friend of the hall,” Jason said. Activities at the hall include a planned working bee and sprucing up the hall’s signs. It is also planned to make it a new centralised venue for the local residents’ committee meetings. Harking back to the days when dancing and musical performances at the hall were part of community life, the environmentally minded Landscape Band will be performing on August 10 with tickets available via trybooking or at the Mooloolah Newsagency. If you would like to get involved or you have ideas for some new activities or events for the town, an information session will be held on Sunday, June 2 at 10am. A yummy morning tea will be provided and it will be a great chance to get some energy around the public hall. More details are available on the Mooloolah Public Hall Facebook page. Rotarians on new member drive
Author visits playgroup
Alan Wilson, Paulette Steele, Greg Williams, Jo Brooker-Clarke, president elect Sheryl Gregory and Phillip Stark ready to cut the club’s 60th anniversary cake The Rotary Club of Maleny turns 60 this month and is keen to attract new members to help the organisation continue delivering quality projects and financial support for the community’s benefit well into the future. President Alan Wilson said the club held its first meeting at the Maleny Hotel in 1959 and over the decades had been involved in or sponsored a diverse range of community projects. The club’s first project was the creation and the initial maintenance of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, Mr Wilson said. In the past five years the club has provided about $50,000 worth of annual grants to local community groups financed by volunteer activities at the Maleny Show, Wood Expo, Australia Day Expo and the Christmas Street Carnival, and profits from the production and sale of an annual calendar. Mr Wilson said the club aimed to be just as successful over the next 60 years. “To help us achieve this goal we really want to harness the creativity of as broad a range of people as possible while increasing the size and diversity of
our membership to better reflect the community we serve,” he said. “There was a common misconception that Rotary was an insular old men’s club, when nothing could be further from the truth because we welcome new members over the age of 18 from all backgrounds and approximately a quarter of the club’s 27 members are female. “If you have an urge to help your local community by being involved in a project or a specific cause close to your heart or you have skills to help the club reach its goals, Rotary may just be the answer,” Mr Wilson said. “The club also provides an excellent avenue for networking and opportunities to enhance personal growth and development through the cultivation of social, public speaking and leadership skills. Enjoying the friendship of people who want to give back to the community and fun social events are a bonus.” Membership enquiries can be made to Phillip Stark on 0434 998 381 or email the secretary at secretary.maleny@rotary9600.org.
Contributed by Natasha Odgers Mooloolah Valley Playgroup was all about emotional awareness last week with guest author Samantha Starshine. You may remember Samantha, a local University of the Sunshine Coast graduate, featured on the front page of the GC&M News late last year launching her self-published children’s book ‘Annie Ant’s Awareness’. First the kids enjoyed some movement exercises to connect them with the wisdom of their bodies. Next, they all sat engaged while Samantha read her creative rhyming storybook, the first in its ABC series ‘The Awareness Boosting Collection’. The little ones loved the opportunity to recognise and express their emotions with the group. Parents and children were also shown some educational guides on developing resilience and emotional intelligence. There is more information for anyone interested at www.samanthastarshine.com. Mooloolah Valley Playgroup is on every Wednesday from 9.30-11am during school terms at the Before and After School Care building, King Road (next to the pool), Mooloolah. Cost is $2 per child and all are welcome.

With Charne Turner Currently on display at the Discovery Centre as part of the theme ‘Biodiversity - that’s life’ are the results from the recent four-day BioBlitz held at the reserve. Exhibits at the centre include some of the impressive art work produced by the eight participating artists, and information about the scientists and their projects. Although some of the scientific results were immediately known, many of the specimens collected will need weeks or months of study in the laboratory to be identified. One immediate result from a night mist-netting survey was the capture of an eastern blossom bat, which was a previously unrecorded species at Mary Cairncross. A survey of the ground around each of the five research trees revealed 80-87 different botanical species with between 514 and 1,136 individual plants growing within the drip line of each tree. The BioBlitz was funded by gold coin donations from visitors and a full report on the outcomes will be available in June. Microphones installed in the canopy during the BioBlitz are still live-streaming audio across the internet. Mary Cairncross is the first Australian site to be included in the World Forum for Acoustic Ecology, joining sites from around the world. The audio can be accessed at any time via http://locusonus.org/soundmap/051/. Friends of Mary Cairncross Association had a stall at the recent successful Maleny Wood Expo. Over the three-day event visitors showed much interest in the exhibits and merchandise on display. At least one new member joined the association and several local residents expressed interest in becoming a volunteer at the reserve. The FMCA meets every three months and the cost of membership is just $10 a year. Anyone interested in joining can do so at the Discovery Centre. The Friends of Mary Cairncross Association aims to protect and enhance the natural environment of the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. Hats off for B Unique Millinery Peachester milliner Brenda Treasure is excited to launch her latest venture, B Unique Millinery. The rebranded name signifies the successful progression from LilyM Hats to an expanded focus on millinery supplies and headpieces and to the current global business, which features four fully stocked millinery warehouses in four countries. Brenda explained that the origins of B Unique Millinery started as a small-scale millinery supply business and she is thrilled to see it blossom into a thriving international company with supply warehouses not just in Australia but the UK, USA and Canada. Following a busy schedule of industry networking events and classes, as well as exhibiting her millinery products at events such as the prestigious London Hat Week for two years in a row, Brenda realised the increasing demand for quality millinery supplies both locally and internationally. She recently returned from
the Kentucky Derby where she was thrilled to see many of her millinery supplies featured at the Oaks Day and Derby Day events. “Our new warehouse in Louisville Kentucky was opened at the end of last year and with such close proximity to millinery showcase events such as the Kentucky Derby, the response to our products has been fantastic. The feedback has been so wonderful that the US warehouse manager and I hosted a thank you high-tea at the historic Brown Hotel in Louisville, which saw customers attending from around the country,” Brenda said. Brenda would like to thank local graphic designer Brooke Murray who helped recreate her logo and branding and says that it has been a wonderful journey of vision and creativity to get her business to this point. As well as sourcing beautiful textiles, lace, crystals, beads and embellishments from around the world, Brenda offers millinery retreats where participants can learn more about the art of millinery and take home a number of their own creations. Details about the Peachester retreat are posted on the B Unique Millinery website. Later this year Brenda will host her first retreat in Vancouver, Canada. Scheduled for mid-August, Brenda has already received an overwhelmingly positive response from people around the world interested in learning about millinery and she is excited to be 's some of B Unique High tea at The Brown Hotel with sharing her art and skills to train American customers others.
Laura Moser (American manager), Leanne Fredrick (Europe manager) and Brenda Treasure at London Hat Week Brenda said B Unique Millinery had a huge and interesting product range including a mix of traditional and innovative millinery supplies. Customers can let their imagination run wild and create their own truly unique creation befitting the most important and special of occasions. “While we supply high quality millinery and embellishment/trimming products we constantly work closely with milliners worldwide to understand their needs and keep up to date with what they are looking for to create their hats and headpieces. Our products also appeal to those looking for crafty items to complete an artistic project such as embellishments, trimmings, feathers, crystals and textiles,” Brenda said. Brenda looks forward to featuring some of her winter inspired creations at the upcoming Maleny Show (May 31-June 1) and will be happy to answer queries from those interested in millinery or wanting to find out more about her product range. For more details visit www.buniquemillinery.com or for more details about local millinery retreats and workshops, please contact Brenda on 0419 511 799.

Employers, are you Single Touch Payroll ready? What exactly is Single Touch Payroll (STP) and who needs to be aware of it? Principal of local accounting firm W.D. Hall & Associates Jens Staermose says most employers are by now hopefully not only aware of but also ready for Single Touch Payroll. STP is a reporting system that comes into force from July 1 requiring all employers with 1–19 employees to send their employees' payroll and super information to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) from their payroll program each payday. This means that all employers’ payroll systems have to be linked to the ATO. Manual reporting is no longer an option. Most accounting software providers are already offering STP solutions as part of their software or they offer a separate payroll software program for $10 or less a month.
More information regarding payroll software providers is available on the ATO’s website http://ato.gov.au/stp. STP means that employers may not have to provide employees with a payment summary at the end of the financial year for certain payments reported through STP. The ATO will make the information available to employees through myGov. Jens Staermose has more than 35 years of accounting and taxation experience in Australia as well as extensive business advisory experience. With the firm’s mission statement of ‘pragmatic advice, worldly vision’ and a ‘keen pair of eyes for your financial needs’, Jens’ comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of accounting practice and wealth creation gives you peace of mind that your business and/or personal accounting needs are in the right hands. “Far too many accountants just crunch numbers, prepare tax returns and create financial reports and then leave you to it. We do so much more at W.D. Hall & Associates. We paint the picture behind the numbers so you understand how your business is performing and what you can do to improve,” Jens said. “Our goal at W.D. Hall & Associates is to help you protect your hard-earned wealth. Our accountants have been around the block a few times. We know just how hard it is to run a business, manage staff and take care of customers. Add the stress of tax time and new requirements such as STP onto that and it’s a recipe for disaster.
We go out of our way to try to make it easy for you.” The firm’s accounting and taxation software applications are Cloud based and all of the firm’s accountants are Xero certified advisors (including payroll certification and conversion certification). They are also proficient in other accounting software applications such as MYOB, Quickbooks and Cashflow Manager. If you – as an employer or an employee – have any questions regarding STP or if you have any other questions regarding your accounting or taxation needs, please contact Jens at W.D. Hall & Associates at his Beerwah office at 9/21 Peachester Road (Turner Park Village), call 5494 0566 or get more information at www.wdhallaccountants.com.au.

Offer expires final State of Origin game 2019
It’s time to commit. Are you a Maroon or are you a Blue? State of Origin kicks off next Wednesday, June 5 with the opening game at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane. Tickets are available starting from $55 for adults, $50 concession and juniors, and $160 for a family of four … although to get a decent view you’ll have to pay considerably more. Teams will be announced just one hour before kick off (which gives Maroons coach Kevin Walters time to slip secret weapon Cameron Smith into the team at the last minute). Since 1998, there have been 114 Origin games, with Queensland winning 61 and New South Wales 51 (and two draws). At Suncorp Stadium there have been 55 games, with Queensland gaining the advantage 35-19. State of Origin 2 is on June 23 at Perth Stadium, with the deciding third game at ANZ Stadium in Sydney on July 10. Queensland has already drawn first blood in the State of Origin series, with the Queensland Residents team beating the NSW Residents team 42-22 on May 12 at Dolphin Stadium at Redcliffe. The residents’ teams are made up of players from the respective state-level competitions. It’s been a clean sweep so far in other state-of-origin style games played this year, with the Queensland Murri team beating the NSW Koori team 28-10, and Queensland Universities beating NSW Universities 28-10. Others games to be played include the women’s State of Origin (June 21 at North Sydney Oval), women’s under 18s, men’s under 16s, 18s and 20s, Queensland Rangers vs NSW Pioneers (players chosen from the grassroots local clubs in each state) and the Police Interstate Challenge.

Introducing new practice nurse, Cathy Anderson Doctors at Landsborough welcomes new practice nurse and diabetes educator Cathy Anderson to the team. Cathy has an incredible wealth of experience behind her and has been a registered nurse for more than 30 years. She has worked in numerous areas of health including paediatrics, palliative care and general practice and will be available by appointment at the Landsborough clinic. Cathy has a special interest in assisting people with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes so they can self-manage their condition. She works closely with dietitians, GPs and endocrinologists to achieve optimal outcomes for people living
with diabetes and is committed to helping people achieve good health and wellbeing. Over the past decade, Cathy has specialised her training in the area of chronic disease management and has also completed her graduate certificate in diabetes education and management. Accredited with the Australian Diabetes Educators Association, Cathy joins Dr Louise Mitchell (Dr Louise), Dr John Dunlea (Dr John) and Dr Ayla Polat-Kaya (Dr Ayla) at the practice. With the number of reported deadly flu cases significantly up on previous years, predications in the media are suggesting one of the worse flu seasons on record.
The official flu season has started and medical advice suggests that now is the optimum time to get vaccinated as the best protection is generally provided in the first 3-4 months following vaccination. While flu symptoms can, at best, be unpleasant and inconveniently impact daily work and family routines, for those with compromised immune systems or the very young or elderly, complications from the flu in severe cases can unfortunately prove to be much more serious. Doctors at Landsborough offer the convenience of bulk billing for general practice care and are the first practice in the area to offer this service - so with no out-of-pocket expenses for Medicare cardholders why not book in and help protect you and your family against the flu now. Book online at HotDoc or call 5360 9350. More details are available at www.imsg.net.au/doctors-landsborough.

Learn about the NDIS The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is about supporting Australians with disability and making sure everyone has the support they need to enjoy an ordinary life. Carers Queensland is the NDIS local area coordinator partner in the community and will host a forum on Tuesday, June 11 from 12.30pm at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre. The forum will explain the NDIS, the eligibility criteria, how to request access, what information to provide, examples of supports and services funded by the NDIS, and where to go for more information. To register for this session, please contact Carers Queensland on 5409 3300 or email SunshineCoastLAC@carersqld.com.au.
Friends of Maleny Library will hold their next book sale on Saturday, June 1 from 9am-12noon outside the library. Don’t miss the opportunity to fill your own bag for $5 from ex-library stock and donated books. You can even buy CDs and DVDs at bargain prices. The Neighbourhood Centre is located in Ryan Street, Glass House Mountains across from the Post Office. Carers Queensland’s local area coordinators are also out and about providing information, answering questions and supporting people to access the NDIS at the Beerwah Library on the second and fourth Thursday of the month from 2–5pm (bookings not required). The Beerwah Library is located 25 Peachester Road, Beerwah.
Acknowledging our volunteers To celebrate National Volunteers Week, members of the Landsborough Seventhday Adventist Church organised gifts of appreciation for the volunteers at Morris House Neighbourhood Centre. The church recognises the important work the volunteers do in helping disadvantaged members of the community. It regularly donates non-perishable food items to the centre. Ian Hope and Ken Husband received the gifts on behalf of the centre from Chris and Charles Russell (centre)

From the churches There is a great hymn with the first line: “What‘er my God ordains is right‌â€? It admits the fact that an Almighty Sovereign God is in control of our earth, our universe and even our politics. After a long campaign we have a result that makes many people happy but leaving a large segment of our society concerned, disillusioned and depressed. Plans are being laid for political action on all sides of politics as we get set for another federal term buttressed by state and local elections. Feelings have run high and hubris, gloating and anger run strong and deep in every political enclave. The Bible teaches us that we have a God who is above politics‌and even governments. Romans 13:1 says: “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities for there is no authority except that which God has establishedâ€?. It is pointless for churches and Christians to assume their political party is “God-approvedâ€?. No party is without sinful people and sinful policies. No one. We only ever get the party platform who we

Pastor Scott Kreoger Maleny Presbyterian Church think will do the least damage or will help the most. The only perfect political campaign was the one run by Jesus to be received as King of Heaven ‌ and they crucified him ‌ but note he is still in charge. So, what can you take away from this election? God sometimes allows political parties not of our choosing to be put into place. He does so for his own glory and for his own purposes (which you and I may not be privy to). In light of that, we should acknowledge that whatever God ordains is right ‌ and pray fervently and regularly for all of the leaders of our country, states and localities. You may be happy with this election, or you may not. Fear not. Trust in Jesus.

Post-election relief
Thank goodness the elections are over and congratulations to our re-elected representative (GC&M News, May 22). We can now travel our local area without faces beaming at us from the posters, no more babies being snatched up and kissed, no barrages of promises ranging from realistic to rash to ridiculous. I don't understand why, with an election looming, an incumbent government will make endless promises of what it will do. Why aren't they already doing it? Presumably we are about to enter the postelection phase of broken promises. Ian Pollock Witta
Election coverage
I note an oddity in your editorial last week about the federal election results for the Conondale and Maleny booths. In each of these booths the Greens gained more first preference votes than the ALP. Hence, in a two-party preferred for each booth, the Greens will have won the booth. The lack of live forums for Fisher during the campaign concerned many people as they did not get a chance to witness and query candidates. The only live forum that I know of was conducted by Solar Citizens at Kawana, whereas this newspaper was a significant source of candidate information thank you very much for this public service. Garry Claridge Maleny Editor’s note: Thanks for the feedback Garry. Just to clarify for all of the readers, the figures we included in the page 3 story in the May 22 edition were from the official Australian Electoral Commission website and, as stated, reflected the two candidate preferred results. From the official AEC Maleny booth figures, the LNP gained 512 votes, Greens 340, Labor 321, One Nation 70, Love Australia 31, United Australia 26 and Fraser Anning’s party 25. After preference distribution, the result was Labor 664 and LNP 661. The figures from the Conondale booth were LNP 105, Greens 105, Labor 69, One Nation 32, Love Australia 12, Fraser Anning’s party 9 and United Australia 7. After the allocation of preferences, the AEC reported that the result was Labor 184 and LNP 155.
Disheartening
We just went through an election. Did you notice, apart from temperature/climate issues, not one major party mentioned any of the current massive planetary life crises? We are in the midst of the sixth mass extinction with 26,000 species now threatened say scientists. Almost 200 species are becoming extinct each day. There has been a 70% world decline of seabirds since 1970 due to over fishing, habitat destruction and pollution. According to the research team, they used the annual consumption of just three prey fish species for nearly 300 varieties of seabird based on population counts and models to get these figures. All seabirds are losing food sources. Land birds are also in trouble with 74% of 1,470 globally threatened birds affected primarily by farming. A report says at least 40% of bird species worldwide are in decline due to farming, urbanisation and logging. Over the past ten years we've produced more plastic than during the whole of the last century
Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
SEND TO: editorial@gcnews.com.au PO Box 99, Beewah 4519
– 50% of the plastic we use just once and throw away. Enough plastic is thrown yearly to circle the Earth four times. Fish are dying across the planet due to ingesting plastics. A recent report in the UK Guardian (October 19, 2017) stated the biomass of flying insects has dropped by 75% since 1989, threatening "serious ecological loss". This scale of insect loss has prompted warnings that the world is on course for ecological disaster, with profound impacts on all of us. Chris Darwin, Charles Darwin's great-greatgrandson, said: "We are living in a car crash moment of natural catastrophes, with climate disasters meeting mass extinctions and leading to human hunger on an unimaginable scale." Western politics is bereft of leaders who have any understanding of what's happening, with no vision of what can be done to turn it around. Australian politics is still stuck in that dead end. Richard Giles Conondale
Heartfelt thanks
On behalf of myself and the Malcolm family I wish to thank everyone who attended and helped with Gwen’s celebration of life on Saturday, May 18. I would particularly like to thank the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) committee and community, John and Aileen Winterhoff of the Glass House Mountains Hall Committee, the Glasshouse Country RSL and all of those who spoke on the day of their memories of Gwen. It was a wonderful experience. A special thanks also to the Glasshouse Country & Maleny News for their support of Gwen for many years. Bob Malcolm Glass House Mountains
Pragmatic policies required
I would like to congratulate Andrew Wallace on his re-election as the federal Member for Fisher. I only hope that Andrew and the Morrison government do not bask too long in the reflected glory of the election win. There are many problems, both economic and social, the government will face in the next three years and I hope its polices to combat these problems are not ideological but pragmatic. For a start, global economic growth is slowing and there are indications that there may be a global recession, particularly given the US-China trade conflict and Trump's dysfunctional and erratic policies. Economic growth in Australia is slowing and, as the RBA claims, the economy is fragile given falling property prices, slow wages growth and record levels of household debt. The Morrison government has to tackle the disparity in wealth between the bush and the cities, it needs to resolve the phenomenal growth in income inequality, implement policies on climate change and the environment that balances our economic and climate interests, and reinstate the National Energy Guarantee now that Turnbull and Abbott are no longer in Parliament. Lastly, the government could do the Australian public a favour by posting Tony Abbott to Tuvalu rather than the US. While sitting on the beach
You Said It in Tarawa he could observe at close hand the impact climate change is having on our Pacific neighbours. Roy Clogstoun Maleny
Commuter parking in Landsborough
Landsborough locals continue to report that the all-day commuter cars spilling out of the Queensland Rail (QR) car parks (which are generally full by around 7am) have really become a problem for the town. Every day the 40-60 cars that cannot fit into the station car parks find spots in the surrounding streets and this directly affects access to local businesses, residential homes and the museum! Council has done what it can by introducing localised regulated parking (time limits) in response to local requests but the real solution lies with the state government’s Beerburrum to Nambour rail upgrade project (B2N), which includes a large additional car park to cater for the growth in passenger numbers. This proposed additional car park is a relatively small part of the overall $700-800 million B2N project, which is being delivered by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) in partnership with QR. I have requested that they bring forward this expansion of the commuter parking but only on the non-town side of the station. This would really take the pressure off the escalating shortfall in commuter parking and demonstrate that the state government understands the impacts on Landsborough. I’d like to encourage anyone who agrees to let TMR know how you feel by sending a letter/email to the attention of the regional director via email at northcoast@tmr.qld.gov.au and B2N@tmr.qld.gov.au. This is a very important time for the state to act early and show they understand how much we need their help to support our country town of Landsborough. Rick Baberowski Division 1 councillor Sunshine Coast Council
National Volunteer Week
Last week was National Volunteer Week and last Friday, May 24, was P&C Appreciation Day so I want to particularly acknowledge the efforts of our hardworking P&C volunteers right across Queensland. School communities came together to pay tribute to a group of tireless volunteers who work hard to fundraise and support their local schools. Whether it be running the tuckshop, organising the school disco or annual trivia night, our P&C volunteers do an amazing job. I am lucky to support some wonderful P&C volunteers in my local electorate. The LNP supports P&Cs and believes that more needs to be done to lighten their workload. That's why we have announced a policy to air condition every state school classroom because we believe that volunteers shouldn't have to fundraise for something that should already be provided - particularly in a state like Queensland. It's part of ensuring our kids have access to a world-class public education system because we think cool kids are smart kids. On behalf of LNP leader Deb Frecklington and the LNP team, I want to thank all the P&Cs across Queensland for the work you do in supporting our local schools. Andrew Powell Member for Glass House 21
Hinterland Kids Open day a great success
By Sandy Johnson The Glasshouse Christian College open day was a huge success and the college wants to thank everyone who attended. There were young families visiting for the first time, locals wanting to learn more about the school and current families supporting their children in various performances. The new sports complex and music centre were very popular, with most parents seeing them for the first time on the day. It was exciting to have so many of the GCC music and instrumental groups perform in these rooms and enjoy the specialised acoustics. The animal nursery and jumping castle were a huge hit with the little ones and the food trucks were a big drawcard for secondary students and their families. Many diets were broken that day. There were lots of healthy options but with the smell of freshly cooked donuts and the sound of sizzling sausages and loaded burgers, difficult choices had to be made. Another popular exhibit was the DeLorean car. The car was brought in to highlight the year 10 DeLorean project, which has students working in groups to solve real world problems using innovation. The strings group ready to Tours ran perform in the hospitality throughout courtyard the day with principal Mike Curtis leading three and two special tours took a bus out to the agricultural science farm in Peachester. Visitors loved cuddling the chickens, patting the sheep, seeing the prize-winning sunflowers and learning about drone technology in modern farming. Student performances ran all day and at different venues across the campus and included junior and senior choirs, drama, French Club dances and songs, instrumental groups, jazz band and the very popular dance performances. Each classroom displayed student work with interactive activities. Teachers enjoyed chatting about learning innovations and how technology is carefully balanced with core skills such as reading and writing.

Butter tasted better
Contributed by Deborah Lawrence Beerwah State School year one students recently enjoyed an excursion to Bankfoot House where they learnt all about artefacts from a bygone era and life for children in the late 1800s.
Examining how an old camera works
It was a wonderful day and the children had an amazing time engaging in the hands-on experiences at this fascinating local historical site. They all agreed that the butter they churned themselves was the best butter they had ever tasted!

Students celebrate reading
Contributed by Nina Brand, teacher librarian As part of Read More in May, the students at Glass House Mountains State School took part in National Simultaneous Storytime last Wednesday. They joined children from all over Australia and New Zealand who listened to a reading of the book ‘Alpacas with Maracas’ by Matt Cosgrove. After experiencing a few technical difficulties, they students enjoyed a digital reading of the book with someone also signing the story in Auslan. Sophie, Reiden, Abby and Emma enjoy reading It was great for the students to come together as ‘Alpacas with Maracas’ a school and celebrate reading.
Eco approach to NAPLAN
Contributed by Kate Burnett For the first time, Peachester State School has completed NAPLAN tests online rather than doing the paper-based tests used previously, reducing the environmental impact of the process.
Erin and Angus with the P&C’s re-usable cups
Principal Kim Fillery said the students were at ease on their new laptops - there was no stress at all. “The students had the option of the computer program reading some of the questions to them, which allowed them to really understand what was being asked without the worry of reading the questions correctly,” she said. The testing was a very smooth process for the school with no technical difficulties or delays. To ensure all children were ready for the tests, breakfasts were lovingly prepared by members of the P&C, who continued with the theme of sustainability by providing re-usable cups to eliminate waste while keeping busy minds hydrated. The cups were purchased by the P&C late last year and have been a fantastic way to reduce waste.
Learning with fun
Have you ever wondered if improving your balance could improve how you read? Do you think you could say all the sounds in ‘crab’ while moving like one? Students from prep to year 2 at Landsborough State School can! A collection of activities prove to be some of the most fun you can have while learning at the school. The activities come together to form a perceptual motor program (PMP). A PMP is generally run by physical education and classroom teachers and teacher aides two to three times a week. The aim is to improve the children's fitness, balance, hand-eye coordination, gross motor
skills and self-confidence. Principal Benjamin Gaske said the students really engaged with PMP. “I particularly enjoy observing the student group leaders support the learning and participation of their peers,” he said.

Innovative outdoor learning program returns After the successful introduction last year of the innovative learning experience Bush Kindy, the team at Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre is excited to announce that the initiative will return in coming weeks. Adding to the centre’s existing kindy program, Bush Kindy offers a unique immersion experience for children in the ‘school readiness’ room. For two days a week the children proudly wear their kindy colours and gather together to have a safety discussion before heading outdoors. Guided by early childhood teacher Emma Coultis, the children embark on a collective learning journey that provides countless benefits. Emma says that the opportunities from the Bush Kindy experiences are endless, encouraging children to take in the natural wonder of the sounds and smells in their local surroundings.
Glasshouse Country & Maleny News
“Taking our kindy class experience outdoors opens up the opportunities to scaffold our learning and embrace outcomes found in the Queensland Kindergarten Guidelines in preparing for understanding the community they live in,” Emma explains. The team at the centre strongly believes that a kindergarten child who is engaged with age-appropriate learning opportunities is more likely to have a strong sense of wellbeing and connectedness. A good kindergarten program can underpin a child’s confidence to be an involved learner and assist in developing a range of skills and processes such as problem solving, enquiry, experimentation, hypothesising, researching and investigating. This is evident when children manipulate objects and experiment with cause and effect, trial and error, and motion. At the centre, this type of learning is actively encouraged and when planning learning environments appropriate levels of challenge are set. With Bush Kindy the children are encouraged to extend themselves and develop age-appropriate responsibility by taking safe risks that assist in promoting self-regulation. The program also serves to promote a deeper bonding relationship between the educators and children as they form teams and experience the wonder of the natural world together. “We find that an engaged child is more likely to explore ways to show care and concern and interact positively with others,” Emma said.
“Our teachers and educators also actively lead by example and promote ways to relate positively with others, be a companion and behave in a friendly way.” At Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre, encouraging and developing effective communication skills is another core objective underpinning the kindy program as educators move towards preparing the children to be school ready. “We believe that our kindergarten children should be encouraged to be effective communicators and explore and expand ways to use language. We ensure that each child has age-appropriate speech patterns, vocabulary and sentence structures, and our teachers promote skills for taking turns to talk and listen and engage in conversations,” Emma said. Glasshouse Mountains Early Education Centre has a quality driven kindergarten program. To find out more or for an obligation free tour of the centre, please phone 5438 7311 or visit the centre at 2 Page Street, Glass House Mountains (no appointment necessary).

with Amcal Pharmacy In Australia, it is recommended that any person aged six months and older gets a flu vaccination to reduce the likelihood of becoming ill with influenza. Flu is more serious than a common cold with sufferers often restricted to bed for up to a week or more, and unable to work or care for loved ones. For others who are considered at risk of complications from the flu, the illness can be much more serious and may lead to hospitalisation. Those considered at higher risk of complications include: • People aged 65 years and over • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders aged six months to five years and adolescents and adults aged 15 years and over • Pregnant women and people with severe asthma, diabetes, chronic heart and kidney disease and certain chronic conditions People who are more likely to come into contact with a person in the at-risk category are also strongly encouraged to have an annual flu vaccination to reduce the likelihood of spreading the virus. This includes but is not limited to: • Healthcare workers and emergency services workers • Workers in aged care and childcare facilities • Anyone who lives or works with at risk people Amcal is offering flu vaccinations expertly administered by one of its pharmacists or a visiting nurse practitioner. No prescriptions necessary. Fees apply. Book your flu vaccination at amcal.com.au/bookings.

Health &Beauty Free Parkinson’s information seminar
All In One Fitness Centre at Beerwah is pleased to host another free community discussion, this time focussing on Parkinson’s disease. Guest speakers will be Parkinson’s disease clinical nurses from the Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital. The hour-long information session will be held at Vianta (Simpson Street, Beerwah) on Thursday, June 6 at 2pm. Taz Calandruccio, owner of All In One Fitness Centre, explained that the need for this type of seminar was prompted by feedback received from members. Taz said that health conditions such as Parkinson’s had been particularly highlighted by those attending the centre’s over 55s fitness program. “Our membership for our over 55s program continues to do well and we now run six classes. We’ve found that with an older client we are addressing different health concerns compared with our younger clients, and so wanted to put something on that was informative and hopefully of benefit to the wider community,” he said. “With some of our older members affected by Parkinson’s we thought it’d be great to increase the general community knowledge around this disease.” The seminar is open to the public and attendance is free. Any donations raised on the day will go to Parkinson’s Queensland. Book your spot by calling All In One Fitness Centre on 5439 0949 or via email beerwah@allinonefitnesscentre.com.au.

Welcome Dr Joni
The team at Mooloolah Dental are really pleased to welcome Dr Joni Neal to their practice. Joni, who grew up on the Sunshine Coast, studied dentistry at the University of Queensland and for most of the past decade has worked in a number of dental practices across Australia. She and her family recently returned Dr David Zimmermann to settle on the Sunshine Coast and with Dr Joni Neal she is looking forward to meeting the families of Mooloolah and surrounding townships. Joni enjoys helping patients of all ages understand the nature of any dental problems they have and what options there are to solve them. Being a mother of two young children she has a particular affinity with young children. Joni said she was really inspired by her dentist when she was growing up as she was always friendly and approachable and made visits to the dentist enjoyable and fun. “I learned from her as well as from my own experience as a dentist that keeping your mouth healthy is an important part of maintaining good general hearth,” she said. Appointments can be made with Joni on a Friday up until 4pm by phoning 5494 7011.

All roads lead to Rome
Beerwah High’s musical this year will be a theatre restaurant production of ‘Rome Sweet Rome’ on Thursday and Friday, June 6-7. It is a show full of comedy and well chosen songs and dance routines. Last week GC&M News got a sneak peek as the students prepared for their dress rehearsal. The directors, Rebecca Stephenson and Debbie Holland, are thrilled with the progress the students are making in developing their whacky roles. There’s Nero, who’s a real mummy’s boy, Cassandra, the highly dramatic soothsayer, and Boadecia the fierce man-hating warrior queen. Throw in some goofy gladiators, some feisty temple maidens and the crazy Dr Twitch and you have a recipe for a very silly but entertaining storyline. Dinner will be an Italian-inspired menu catered by the years 11 and 12 hospitality classes and includes beef ragù with pasta, chicken cacciatore, vegetarian lasagne, lemon ricotta dessert cake and tiramisu. For a fun night, why not organise a table. Tickets for the show and Roman citizens Kayla Eilsworth and dinner are $30 and can be purchased at Paige Brunsmann the school’s administration building.

In the Garden It’s edible and it’s incredible … it’s Gardening on the Edge!
Maleny Garden Club’s Gardening on the Edge event (June 8-9) will feature six open gardens in and around Maleny of such variety that there is definitely something for absolutely everyone. For the first time, a garden with a big focus on edibles is being showcased, with Green Harvest at Witta being one of the six. If you don’t know about Green Harvest, it is a family owned (by Frances and Jeff Michaels) local operation that began in 1992 as a mail order organic gardening and permaculture supplies business. As they grew too large for their kitchen table, they set up a shop, storage and distribution centre at Gumland Drive in Witta, surrounded by organic gardens full of productive and edible plants. Now they are one the most comprehensive sources of organic, ethical and top-quality gardening products, seeds, tools, books and organic gardening information that you’ll find anywhere. Their product catalogue – the Australian Organic Gardening Resource Guide – is an amazing resource where you’ll find everything you need to grow nutritious, chemical-free vegetables and fruit. And … it’s free of charge! According to Jeff, they are really looking forward to the Gardening on the Edge weekend as it’s a good time to showcase edibles. “At this time of year, we’re on the transition between edible subtropical perennials and the cool season produce, so they’ll be plenty to see,” Jeff said. “We’ll have a great range of rare and unusual edibles on display and for sale, plus edible plants that also improve the soil ecosystem and provide habitat for beneficial insects and animals.” The shop area will be expanded into the car park so visitors will have an even more extensive range of products to look over and take home. Green Harvest will have a bevy of experienced and knowledgeable staff on hand to answer questions and explain plants and products in more detail. Jeff hopes it will be an exceptional educational experience for visitors over the weekend. “We want people to go away with a better appreciation of the values organic edibles have in our subtropical climate,” Jeff explained. “And maybe to take some home to try for themselves and see how easy it actually is to grow your own.” All six Gardening on the Edge gardens are open on both Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9 from 9am-4pm. Tickets for the open gardens can be purchased at the Maleny Showground pavilion (cash and card) where a garden expo and market extravaganza will be held on the same weekend, or at the open gardens (cash only). Cost for the open gardens is $5 for one garden, $13 for three gardens and $25 for all six gardens. Entry to the garden expo and market is free. For all the details, head to the event webpage www.malenygardenclub.org/about-goe.

Jobs for the yard in June
• It’s your last chance to prune hydrangeas back almost to ground level. Use the cuttings to propagate new plants. • Citrus leaves may develop a yellow colour due to the cool soil, which slows nutrient uptake through the roots. You can boost them with a foliar spray of a fertiliser with trace elements. • Pinch out the tips of your sweet pea plants to make them bush up and produce more flowers later. • Lift dahlia tubers, brush the soil off and store them in sawdust to prevent them from rotting. Split up old clumps of daylilies. Replant them around the garden or give some to a friend or neighbour. • Mound soil around potatoes already growing to prevent pest attack and to stop the surface growing potatoes from going green. • Cut the old stems of asparagus down, top-dress with well-rotted manure or compost and mulch. • Early bindii may start to appear and, if so, hand removal is easy or spray with an appropriate herbicide. • Rose planting can be done this month. Plant them in a sunny position in soil enriched by compost and animal manure. A little rose plant fertiliser will also help. Vegetables Plant Asian greens, asparagus, beans, beetroot, broad beans, broccoli, cabbage, capsicum, carrot, cauliflower, celery, chilli, cucumber, endive, garlic, kohlrabi, leeks, lettuce, onions, parsnip, peas, potato, radish, rhubarb, shallots, silverbeet, spinach, spring onion, sweet potato, turnip and tomato. Flowers Plant alyssum, amaranthus, bedding begonia, boronia, Californian poppy, carnation, chrysanthemum, cineraria, cosmos, dianthus, gerbera, gaillardia, gazania, Iceland poppy, kale, lobelia, marigold, pansy, petunia, phlox, portulaca, roses, snapdragon, statice, verbena, viola and zinnia.

Sport Witta Tennis
Maleny Golf Club
Contributed by Pauline Fraley Witta Wagtails have had a couple of injuries, players away on holidays and, of course, wash outs due to the weather in the past few weeks. It was a cool start at Eumundi but we all soon warmed up. We had an enjoyable day of tennis and a lovely lunch but the Witta Wagtails succumbed to the skill of Eumundi Miss Gems. Thank you to Gerry Gabriel, Cynthia Garvie, Sonia Douglas and a big thank you to Sheryn Golledge for helping us out at short notice. The Wildcats travelled to Nambour to compete against the top team ZTA Novas. Right from the get go the scores were very close with everybody throwing everything at their opponent. It could have gone either way. However, Annie Stewart, Stacey English, Jenie Riding and Michelle Macaree were triumphant defeating their opponent four sets each and 40-34 games. Whistlers played at Witta against Ballinger Breezers. It was a perfect day for tennis and we had a battle on our hands. Every set took a long time with many deuces each game. Everyone dived to get the balls and it looked like it would never end. We were exhausted when we finished but it was a great day with a good win. Score was 45-27 games, 7-1 sets. Team was Paula Cudmore, Brenda Warner, Donna Kuskopf and Aki Lepper. Social tennis is on Monday 8am and Saturday 1pm. All welcome. For court bookings phone 0437 295 501 or www.wittatennis.com.au.

Maleny Bowls Club Contributed by Graeme Glover A great week of finals and fun at the bowls club but holidays and the flu season have made getting replacements for some teams very important. Much appreciation to all those who have helped out. Congratulations to the Mavericks on their success in coming out on top of the table in the Wednesday night bowls. It was great to have Harry Flynn and Judith Lees combine with Joe Walters throughout this season to form a good combination. Thanks to all who have supported this event. It is now time to get your teams in for the next season and visitors are always welcome. Congratulations to Miles Allen who played some good bowls throughout the singles tournament to come out as the winner. Thanks to all who nominated and made this a good competition for all involved. Keep checking the games board for all games called for any competition. Early nominations help the organisers in maintaining a smooth games program. Open pairs – a reminder to all that nominations close on Wednesday. Please check your commitments and availability before you nominate. Thanks in advance. Looking forward to some great bowls this week with lovely weather predicted.

The Range Croquet Club Contributed by Ken Barker Thursday saw a welcome break in the weather with Nick Cram and Ken Barker playing a friendly with no scores recorded, as did Donna Manning playing Sally Adams and Bev Sockhill - great games, good company, sunshine and a freshly mown lawn. A regular group of players from Caloundra come to the grounds on the third Friday of the month to play golf croquet. Last Friday about ten players attended. The games are always of a good standard. Regular golf croquet players in our club and association players who wish to improve their hoop running skills would do well to attend. Last Sunday Sarah Widin, Donna and Ken (for part of it) attended a training session run by Margaret and Ernie Melville at Stephens Club in Brisbane. It was an instructive, enjoyable session.
Wallace Roy and Sarah are pictured at a training session on a Saturday morning. It graphically demonstrates why many players choose to get onto the lawn before their first game in a tournament after there has been a heavy dew. Not only is it important to get a feel for the pace of the lawn, which will be slower because of the wet grass, but also the lines can indicate imperfections in the lawn so that during the game, hopefully, a player can adjust for them. Coaching for beginners and others is available on the picturesque lawns at the bottom of the Maleny Showgrounds from 8-10 am on Saturdays. These are popular sessions in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Play days are on Thursdays and Sundays at 1pm for a 1.30pm start. Our web address is https://rangecroquetatmaleny. org.au. For details contact president Vince Carbery on 5494 2193, or secretary Priscilla Vickers on 5494 3555.

Just for Laughs Painful interruption
A woman and her husband interrupted their holiday to go to the dentist. “I want a tooth pulled and I don’t want the pain killers because I’m in a big hurry,” the woman said to the dentist. “Just extract the tooth as quickly as possible and we’ll be on our way.” The dentist was quite impressed. “You’re certainly a courageous woman,” he said. “Which tooth is it?” The woman turned to her husband: “Show him your tooth, dear.” Noel Paine, Albion Park Rail
Your Stars ARIES March 21 - April 20 The Moon is in your lively, enthusiastic sign for the next couple of days and gets you up and moving in one form or another. There is no need to push hard as you could end up struggling for your next position. Just go with the flow. The stability and support of a longtime business or family relationship makes life better for you. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 There are green-light days for you at the end of this month. In the background are people who can be instrumental in bringing personal and business prospects your way. Emphasise facts before making decisions about spending, otherwise fiscal entanglements can be difficult to renegotiate. Connection with a friend brings uncanny understanding. GEMINI May 22 - June 23 You generally prefer the intellectual environment but it is the emotional one surrounding you this week, as the Moon in Aries brings you increasing amounts of information. With several planets in retrograde, meaning reverse motions, we strongly suggest you do not return to an old grievance due to an early emotional upset. CANCER June 24 - July 22 There is a good show of loyalty and compassion. So, when it comes to what is right or wrong, trust your gut instinct. It is possible to get ahead by being alert to the energetic fast-moving events you see now arising. A project devoted to altruism will surely shine. Kindness flows between you and an understanding person sharing others’ dreams.

All in a name
A husband and wife were driving through Queensland. As they approached Biloela, they started arguing about the pronunciation of the town. They argued back and forth, then stopped for lunch. At the counter, the husband asked: "Before we order, could you please settle an argument for us? Would you please pronounce where we are very slowly?" She leaned over the counter and said: "Kentucccky Frrriied Chhickken."

LEO July 23 – August 22 There is a rousing Aries Moon activating the last few days of the month. This enlivens the slower pace of any recent activities. You should be wearing social smiles while meeting pleasant associations. If there is any rebuke try not to hold it in or let it darken your own light. Allow yourself to move forward confidently towards ambition. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 There is a planetary aspect that tells you instinctively that things may not be what they truly seem to be. This is most likely to be a week where you receive spam mail or a door-knock hoping to offer you a special deal. This is no time to trust blindly so be careful of what you say or put in writing. Your private life sees you moving up a rung or two. LIBRA September 23 - October 22 With the Moon having a few days in Aries this is a wonderful time for a health spa visit or a wonderful time spent with a holistic healer. Even though one or two days this week may be stressful things will still work out all right and you should seek the good services of a long-term friend and have a cup of tea if you are caught in family conflict. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 This is a good week to talk things over with your spouse or business partner. If you attend any meetings make sure you listen to another person’s problem and not brush them off with a wave of your hand. Sometimes incomplete information will certainly fog things up. No decisions to be made until you get to the bottom of it all.
SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 The end of the month sees a warm rush of enthusiastic energy sending you in search of happy companions to laugh with and perhaps join in on an adventure. One or two days may be weighed down with complications, a criticism, suspicion or secret. You can count on someone to be there in a way that sorts out someone professionally. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 The end of this month sees you get a powerful hunch and you should heed it, especially if it tells you to get going with a plan or an idea that is sure to meet with approval. When it comes to work, put aside assumptions and stick to the facts. This can be a creative time to step forward into a positive romance if there is enough affection. AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 The lively Aries Moon over the last couple of days of this month will not disappoint you! It may be just what the doctor ordered to return to the fun agenda with charming, witty companions. You may find someone with too much competition and aggression, so avoid contrary extremist opinions. Take a walk on the moderate side. PISCES February 20 - March 20 Your plan and ideas take constructive shape now as when the Moon is strong in a leadership sign, you can count on someone to deliver a message that cuts through to where it really counts. This is the week when you can see the best in everyone and connections are deeply heart-felt. Be very careful signing papers at this time.
