WHEN the producers of The Amazing Race contacted us recently to give us the heads up that Glass House Mountains and the hinterland were part of an upcoming show we were just a little bit excited. The crazy thing is, while we already know what a great spot we live it, it is still nice knowing that viewers across the country have an opportunity to share in the natural beauty our great part of the world offers. I thought I would remind you all of this before I put in a plug for one of the other important local events happening this fortnight – Clean Up Australia Day. So if you are keen to ensure that locals and visitors to the area can continue to enjoy and admire our beautiful

COVER

The Amazing Race comes to Glass House Mountains By Sonia Isaacs Clark WE love seeing our Glass House Mountains showcased across the country, so when we discovered The Amazing Race Australia included an episode featuring our stunning hinterland backyard we were keen to chat with the show’s host Beau Ryan. The Australian version of the reality TV game show, a spin-off of the hugely successful American series, sees competing teams of two contestants battle it out through a series of race challenges across the globe to win $250,000. Due to COVID 19, filming for the current season took place only in Australia. The episode featuring Maleny, Montville and the hinterland was filmed in October last year. Beau said the cast and crew spent two days on the Sunshine Coast filming at numerous local spots including Maleny Botanic Gardens and Bird World, Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve and Montville. He said highlights of the visit were the incredible beauty of the mountains and just how green the region was. “People seemed excited to see us filming but they were really friendly and everyone we met seemed so relaxed and chilled,” Beau said. “This episode was filmed midway through the season, so the cast and crew had already travelled through South Australia, the outback and Far North Queensland, which was all quite dry so we hadn’t seen a lot of greenery.

story

“It was great to arrive here and be surrounded by rainforest and almost jungle-like scenery that looked incredible on film, especially compared to other areas we’d been.” Beau said the Glass House Mountains region was so beautiful that they ended up filming a lot of the show’s promo shots for the race in front of the mountains. Another memorable experience was witnessing the magnitude of a Queensland storm that came over during filming, with contestants and crew racing to beat the storm. “It was pretty frantic for all of us and I’ve honestly never seen a storm come over like it, but it looked amazing,” Beau said. “It was good to showcase this area of the Sunshine Coast. Often we see other areas promoted and it was great to give this part of the world the recognition it deserves. “I’m definitely keen to bring my family back here for a longer visit and we’ll be keen to be back to film future episodes,” he said. The Amazing Race is currently on Network 10 Sunday-Tuesdays at 7.30pm. The locally filmed episode went to air on Monday March 1. If you didn’t see it you can catch up online at https://10play.com.au The Amazing Race host Beau Ryan at Maleny Botanic Gardens and Bird World

Quicker connection to coast is coming

Olympics a step closer

With the roar of bulldozers in the background, Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey recently joined Caloundra MP Jason Hunt and Stockland Queensland general manager David Laner to witness the ground being broken to signal the start of the new Bells Creek arterial extension road. The $70 million upgrade, creating a new southern road connection from Caloundra and Aura to the Bruce Highway at Bells Creek Road, is set to transform access into the southern parts of the Sunshine Coast. Despite the recent increase in rain, the 8km of road is expected to be completed and open in late 2022, directly linking the Glasshouse Country region via Roys Road with the new commercial centres at Caloundra South and the southern Sunshine Coast. The road will be single lane each way and is expected to carry 22,000 vehicles a day. Clearly pleased that the road plans have been brought forward almost a decade, Minister Bailey praised Mr Hunt for his efforts to make it a reality. “Jason understood the importance of having this critical piece of infrastructure brought forward and

SUNSHINE Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson has been committed to advancing plans to hold the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games in South East Queensland (SEQ) since the idea was first mooted by the Council of Mayors (SEQ) nearly six years ago. He is delighted with the announcement made on Thursday, February 25 by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that SEQ was the preferred host for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. In April 2015 Mr Jamieson along with the then Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk were the first government representatives to meet IOC president Thomas Bach to discuss the potential to host the games in SEQ. Mr Jamieson said it had been a rollercoaster journey to get to this point but SEQ was not over the line yet. “Bringing the federal and state governments to the table in 2019 has only served to add to our momentum,” he said. “The inherent value of what can be realised when the three tiers of government work together productively is what has helped achieve the milestone we have reached today.” What do you think? Are you keen for us to host the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics on home soil? Send us an email at editorial@gcnews.com.au to let us know your thoughts.

Minister Mark Bailey, MP Jason Hunt and David Laner from Stockland lobbied hard to get this outcome,” Mr Bailey said. Mr Hunt said building the Bells Creek arterial road would give Caloundra South locals a new connection to the Bruce Highway, easing the burden on Caloundra Road. “That means locals will be able to make local east-west trips without having to get

on the Bruce Highway, which is a great outcome in terms of safety, as well as reducing congestion,” Mr Hunt said. “That investment [Bells Creek arterial] is the catalyst for unlocking $300 million of additional housing and infrastructure investment at Caloundra South, supporting 314 direct jobs and more than 550 indirect jobs.”

THE area in front of Beerwah Library on Peachester Road has been transformed into a work site. Division 1 councillor Rick Baberowski and the Assistant Minister for Local Government Nikki Boyd (pictured below) recently grabbed their ceremonial shovels to celebrate the start of construction of a community meeting place. The $1.65 million project will include meeting rooms that can be tailored to suit many purposes, an outdoor meeting room and green arcade, a small kitchenette and an integrated link to the Beerwah Library. The building configuration will allow for multiple layout possibilities ranging from one large communal space to four smaller meeting spaces through the use of partitions and glazed screens.

Cr Baberowski said community groups had been struggling with the existing one small space or alternative large hall for years. “They will now have many more choices and I’m sure will put the building to good use,” he said. Member for Caloundra Jason Hunt welcomed news that construction had started. “This new facility is a fantastic opportunity in our community, helping to create a space for locals to come together,” Mr Hunt said. The new facility is being constructed by the Sunshine Coast Council thanks to funding from the Queensland Government’s Unite and Recover Community Stimulus Package.

Skilling trainees

Local action on housing crisis THE current housing crisis on the Sunshine Coast is being felt across Glasshouse Country, Maleny and the wider Blackall Range district with a significant shortage of rental properties leading to a spike in rental costs, leaving many people facing housing stress and homelessness. In response a meeting of like-minded groups was held recently to explore local concerns, and visions and actions that could be undertaken to create local solutions to the current lack of affordable housing. Community members from Glass Housing 55, the SMART Living Society, Maleny Neighbourhood Centre/CHASM and Coast2Bay met for the first time at the Glasshouse Country RSL. The groups are devoting much of their time and effort to exploring a range of options to establish affordable housing solutions, such as housing developments, investments and partnerships that are typically long-term processes with a range of challenges. The groups discussed common issues they experienced through seeking housing solutions and decided to come together again to raise some of these concerns as a local combined voice.

Paulette Steele (SMART Living Society), Lee Banfield (Coast2Bay), Rick Paget (Maleny Neighbourhood Centre), Natasha Odgers (Hinterland Community Development Program), Shirley King, Viki Blaik, Brian Fraser, Lynda Utting and Janet Kent (Glass Housing 55) One issue was the looming dismantling of the National Residential Affordability Scheme (NRAS), which could have compounding difficulties for people requiring rental assistance. Another concern was around restrictions on installing tiny houses on properties.

The groups plan to continue to seek the availability of more affordable housing in the area with drive and passion from the community level. For more information contact Glass Housing 55 member Viki Blaik at vikblik@bigpond.com.

MEMBER for Caloundra Jason Hunt recently visited Landsborough’s Barung Landcare Native Plant Nursery to discuss the Skilling Queenslanders for Work program. The program provides funds to skill and empower Queenslanders to make a career shift to an industry that needs more workers. Mr Hunt met with eight of the previous trainees who had come from a range of different careers, including hospitality, tourism and trades, who wanted to make the shift into environmental management. Barung will take two more lots of trainees over 2021/22 thanks to funding commitments from the Queensland Government.

Ben Child - Eye on recycling By Sonia Isaacs Clark

MONTVILLE resident Ben Child is a passionate advocate for smart and conscious recycling. Inspired to provide simple and easy solutions to help others deal with household and business waste, and contribute to positive environmental change, he founded Recycle Me. Launched last month, the service provides a hasslefree way to ensure waste is distributed and recycled ethically. Servicing the Sunshine Coast hinterland and Glasshouse Country areas from Mapleton to Maleny and Landsborough and across to Beerburrum, everything from cans and bottles to unwanted clothes, furniture, soft plastics, print cartridges, paint and garden waste can be removed and recycled by Recycle Me. We caught up with Ben to find out more about this sustainable friendly business. Q: Where did the idea for this venture come from and when did you kick it off ? I’ve always been passionate and engaged in how we improve and better protect the environment, and probably more so in the past six years since becoming a dad. At home, we’ve been working to reduce our own household waste. We separate and distribute cans and bottles, soft plastics, cardboard, food scraps, garden waste, paint, print cartridges and more, and it’s been a very rewarding process. We’ve gone from putting our council bins out for collection once a week to once a month at most. I love seeing how our young children (aged nearly 6 and 3½ years) naturally separate their waste now into the different bins and compost.

How do you think this will benefit our local community? Lots of people have good intentions but aren’t sure where to start. Recycling has improved in recent years but it’s also become more complicated - there’s more terminology, more ways to recycle, different drop off points for different items. I appreciate people don’t have time to run around and drop these items at different locations, hence we take the hassle out of it for them with either one-off fees (for spring cleans, events and garden clean ups) or a monthly subscription to remove regular items (like bottles, cans, bread tags, milk bottles). What local partnerships/other sustainable schemes are you linked to? I recycle soft plastics via REDcycle, cans and bottles are returned to TOMRA Recycling Centre at Kunda Park, which powers the clean loop recycling technology behind Containers for Change. Egg cartons, milk bottles and other items are donated to local schools and kindergartens for kids’ crafts. Barung Landcare in Maleny accepts marker pens and bread tags for recycling. Print cartridges are returned to Officeworks. Used clothing items that wouldn’t be accepted by charity shops are returned to Zara and H&M who recycle the fabrics. Garden waste is composted and unwanted furniture is dropped at charity shops.

What can people recycle that they may have thought was not recyclable? Most things can be recycled, upcycled and reused. A couple of the easiest ones that a lot of people might not think about are the bottles/cans and soft plastics. You can also recycle print cartridges, mobile phones, batteries, paint, bread tags, beauty products and more. To find out more go to www.recyclemeaustralia.com.au

Eunice Prickett - World Day of Prayer coordinator, Glasshouse Country By Sonia Isaacs Clark

FOR more than 15 years, Peachester resident Eunice Prickett has volunteered her time to act as the World Day of Prayer coordinator for the Glasshouse Country area. This year’s event on Friday, March 5 will be her last in the role. Still sprightly at 82, Eunice said she regarded her long involvement with the annual event as a privilege and never a chore. She has thoroughly enjoyed sharing a strengthened sense of unity, fellowship and faith with others in the local community. “It is always a lovely day and a wonderful opportunity for people from different churches to come together as one,” Eunice said. “I’ve been very well supported over the years and I wish to thank everyone who gets involved to make this unique event a success.” Eunice said she hadn’t initially planned to take on the role. However, in the early 2000s she felt the local service at the time could do with some revitalisation. Although the previous organisers were kind, sincere and well meaning, when Eunice made contact they were very happy to hand the role on to her. Fortunately Eunice had some knowledge of how the event was run successfully in Mt Isa, where she originally came from. Eunice said the first year she got involved, five Glasshouse Country churches came on board. The local Assemblies of God, Baptist, Anglican, Catholic and

10

Uniting churches all played a part in making that year a wonderful success and setting the foundation for future gatherings. In later years, the Seventh-day Adventists also became involved. The annual service rotates across different host churches each year, regularly attracting more than 80 attendees and some years raising more than $1,000. “I’d reach out directly to each of our local churches to be involved. Every year we take the service booklet and break it down into sections to be read by each group,” Eunice said. “Everyone has a part to play, which is important, and I think that’s what contributed to a successful day. The organising committee also meets a couple of times before the service, which was also a lovely way to bond and build up friendship.” Eunice said she also felt people enjoyed being made aware of other countries, with guest speakers, objects of interest and insights into aspects of the yearly host committee country featured at the annual service. “Each event has been special, with so many aspects to enjoy and we’ve also learnt more about many different countries we might not normally know much about,” she said. “Some of the countries featured since I have been involved have included Zimbabwe, Chile, Egypt, France and Papua New Guinea, to name a few.” This year the theme for contemplation and prayerful action is Build on a Strong Foundation, with Vanuatu as the host country. The Glasshouse Country service will

World Day of Prayer coordinator for the Glasshouse Country area Eunice Prickett with her husband Ted be held on Friday, March 5 at the Glasshouse Country Baptist Church, Roberts Road, Beerwah at 9.30am. All are welcome.

COMMUNITY

The show must go COVID safe WITH less than three months to this year’s Maleny Show, planning is under way to ensure the Maleny Show Society can meet all elements of the Queensland Government’s COVID Safe Industry Plans and Checklists for the show on Friday-Saturday, May 28-29. Show society secretary Lois White said the society had been encouraged to see the 2021 show season had kicked off in the Darling Downs, with shows already held in Stanthorpe, Allora and Clifton. Lois said the Maleny committee was keen to learn from the organisers of these shows. “One of the critical elements for this year is that we will need to significantly increase our general volunteers during the show to ensure we meet all of the safety requirements,” Lois said. In the lead up to the event the society needs new stewards to work in the cooking, photography, beef and wood

chopping sections, and is keen to hear from locals who would be interested in getting involved. One of the new requirements will be the pre-purchase of online tickets before heading to the show. Details on how to do this will be available when they are finalised. Another change this year will be the move away from the traditional evening show ball, where the winners of the Showgirl and Rural Ambassadors competitions are announced, to an afternoon event held at The Orangery Maleny. To keep up to date with what is happening in the lead up to the show make sure you like Maleny Show Society Facebook page. If you are able to volunteer to make this year’s show another wonderful community event contact Lois via email malenyshowsociety@bigpond.com.

Facelift for local museum

news

THE doors to Landsborough Museum are open once again following a threemonth closure. The museum now boasts a new roof, more in keeping with the style of the building, plus repairs that protect and preserve the historic building. The old council chambers building, now home to the museum, is listed in the Queensland Heritage Register as a place of cultural heritage significance. The museum’s 2019 conservation management plan identified leaks in the roof into the internal ceiling were causing deterioration and warping, as well as structural issues in the front section of the main building. Works were undertaken in accordance with the principles and philosophy of minimal intervention so that the fabric of the place was retained. Rosey Field, Landsborough Museum

A new beam was added to the ceiling grants coordinator, said the new roof and guttering better reflected the heritage values of the building. “The roofing material used today is much closer to what would have been used in 1924 when the chambers opened,” Rosey said. Funding for the conservation work was provided by the Queensland Government’s community sustainability action grant program and the Sunshine Coast Council’s built heritage conservation fund.

Celebrating Books, Maleny 2021

Vollies enjoy morning famil

IF you love reading, writing and meeting like-minded people, you’ll be pleased to know the team behind Celebration of Books Maleny are back on track with a new name and festival format for 2021. Celebrating Books, Maleny 2021 will include four main signature book-related events spread from March to July, with the first two events kicking off on Saturday, March 20. Organiser Claire Booth said the decision to extend the book festival concept into a series of events was a way to mitigate the uncertainty of potential lockdowns while still celebrating Australia’s most welcoming town, Maleny, and its inherent passion for books, reading and writing. “We were just starting to plan this year’s festival, when the three-day lockdown in Brisbane occurred at the end of January,” Claire said. “After last year’s festival cancellation we knew we didn’t want to go through that again, so the team decided that instead we would look to spread the joy and host four major events with the possibility of some smaller scale events over the coming five months.” As a signature event, the Maleny Big Book Club will make a highly anticipated return to the town with a uniquely revised format on Saturday, March 20 from 1.30-4pm at the Maleny Community Centre. Book lovers and readers can enjoy the opportunity to discuss Charlotte McConaghy’s hybrid adventure/ speculative climate fiction novel ‘The Last Migration’ in COVID safe small groups followed by a lively larger group discussion with special guest speaker, conservation biologist Professor Richard Fuller.

TO ensure that our Maleny Visitors Information Centre volunteers have first-hand knowledge on what is happening locally we regularly enjoy local outings together, known as famils. The first one for the year was recently attended by 28 volunteers and included a fascinating talk by Neil Andison of Platypus Whispers, who answered many questions regarding the unique platypus. Terri Ann from Mondo Botanica and Floral Design showed off their wonderful floral arrangements and plants and discussed the annual number of weddings she supplies in Maleny. This was followed by an enjoyable cup of coffee at The Barrel at Clouds Vineyard and a visit to Runaway to Maleny, a peaceful B&B situated in a very secluded tranquil bushland setting beside the Obi Obi Creek. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer and joining this great team at Maleny Visitors Information Centre, please call into the centre at 23 Maple Street for an application form or for information use the Maleny Visitor Information Centre website www.malenyinfocentre.edublogs.org/become-avolunteer/

Professor Richard Fuller will be the guest speaker at the Maleny Big Book Club, part of the Celebrating Books, Maleny 2021 program Earlier in the day a writers’ workshop with local author and queen of romance Sarah Williams will be held at the Hinterland Business Centre from 9am-12noon. Tickets to both events are $20 and available online via www.trybooking.com or from Maleny Additions, shop 3/25 Maple Street. Keep an eye out for future events including live streaming from the Sydney Writers’ Festival from April 30-May 2 and a special writers’ panel discussion on Sunday, July 4. “We’ve had a few hurdles along the way but we are very excited to bring back a focus on books, reading and writing to Maleny, which leads in this area, and once again celebrate this passion as a community together,” Claire said. By Sonia Isaacs Clark GLASS House Mountains performance artist, choreographer and disability advocate Allycia Staples has been nominated for a regional award in the 2021 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards. The awards promote the positive achievements of young Queenslanders who inspire others, and 25-year-old Allycia is no exception with her commitment to multiple creative projects and ongoing advocacy work at local, state and national levels to help elevate the status of people with intellectual disabilities. Allycia was nominated by local performance art group Sunshine Troupe president Veronica Wain. The nomination included an impressive list of achievements, community leadership roles, performance credits and volunteer representative work. Veronica said Allycia’s dedication and leadership as an artist with a disability and advocate within her local community and beyond, particularly came to the fore during the challenging and difficult times experienced by many last year. “Despite the challenges, Allycia was able to adapt and acquire online

communication skills and continue to contribute to the creation of Australia’s First National Youth Disability Summit,” Veronica said. “Her dedication and belief in self advocacy for people with a disability has seen her overcome her own challenges and become a shining light within her community, inspiring others to follow their dreams and goals.” Veronica said that Allycia was a dedicated community leader shining a light on the capability and talents of young Australians living with disability, ultimately building bridges between disability and mainstream. The awards winners will be announced in May.

Grief garden to help heal LOCAL group Tying Up Loose Ends (TULE) has been approached by the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre (MNC) and Maleny Flexi School to collaborate on a special project to create a community grief garden adjacent to the neighbourhood centre. Local visual artist Christine Elcoate has volunteered to coordinate the project along with fellow TULE member Fleur Adamson. Christine said the vison for the garden would incorporate five healing spaces to inspire compassion, kindness, empathy, support and understanding with calming pathways guiding people through to each of the spaces. “The project is what the TULE group is all about, as we seek to do death differently by empowering, educating and cultivating change in the way we can experience death, dying and grieving.

“For some time Jo Rickards, from the Flexi School, has felt the need for a healing space for students, some of whom have lost friends, fellow students and family. “A grief garden could be incorporated into the school’s wellness program providing benefit to both students and the local community,” Christine said. Christine said that the Maleny community was already rallying around the project, with Cr Winston Johnston committing to help source materials for pathways and a natural footbridge, Barung Landcare offering plants and hands-on help from their trainees to clear debris and weeds from the space, and Jim Straker from MNC offering to lead the young group through clearing the proposed area while also seeking their input on the layout for the garden.

From talking to actions DISCUSSIONS about the urgency of climate change and practical responses by Maleny residents continue to be made possible through events hosted by Maleny Forums. A recent gathering of 25 people at Maleny Neighbourhood Centre was a follow up to a forum held in December 2020 on climate change. Participants reviewed the issues that emerged from the December forum and produced detailed descriptions of ways the environment and residents’ lives are impacted by carbon dioxide production added to the atmosphere by human activities. It was agreed that carbon dioxide production in Maleny resulted from a range of factors, including a preference for cars for transport, a culture of consumerism, high levels of waste, the removal of trees and vegetation, and unhealthy watercourses. There was also a lack of local opportunities for ethical investments in food production, waste reduction,

recycling, renewable energy and composting. Participants identified the importance of residents being well informed about community responses to climate change. It was noted that many groups and individuals were already taking positive practical action but this was not widely known. Barry Smith, of the Maleny Forums Coordinating Team (MFCT), said he was impressed by the commitment of participants to record practical actions that might be taken by Maleny residents and the suggested next steps. He said the MFCT would produce and publish a summary of the outcomes of the evening. It would also identify ways to widen the participation of the community and decide on practical community projects that would be implemented. If you are interested in receiving information from Maleny Forums or want to participate in future projects email Maleny Forums at malenyforums@gmail.com.

Much-loved hospital volunteers hang up their hats

Volunteer Sylvia Pleming congratulated by Michelle Acworth for her years of volunteer service MALENY Soldiers Memorial Hospital recently said farewell to two of its muchloved volunteers - Sylvia Pleming and Judy Breeman - who have spent many years helping patients and visitors at the hospital. Sylvia first started volunteering at the hospital 18 years ago in 2003, when the volunteer program was established. During her time volunteering Sylvia was often seen walking through the wards offering personal items to patients such as shampoo, shavers and books to read. She enjoyed chatting with patients, and their friends and family or visitors from out of town, and ensuring patients had everything they needed for their stay. Judy was a friendly face assisting in the waiting area and wards, always happy to stop for a chat with patients and staff. Both Sylvia and Judy completed many behind-the-scenes tasks such as preparing new patient charts, organising the CD/DVD collections,

loaning out headsets and helping with televisions. COVID restrictions have meant volunteer services at the hospital have been restricted but senior coordinator of volunteer services Michelle Acworth said the community and hospital staff were very pleased to learn that volunteers would be back onsite this month. “Knowing the volunteers are there to help with spare batteries for the TV remote or provide a birthday card for a patient in the ward makes all the difference,” Mrs Acworth said. Director of nursing Karen Croker said she was proud of the volunteers’ work and the support they are able to provide patients and staff. “It seems everyone in the town knows the volunteers and their presence has been missed by all. The staff at the hospital are very excited to hear they are returning,” Ms Croker said. A morning tea was held to farewell Sylvia and Judy and acknowledge their dedication and commitment to the volunteer program.

LOCALS are being asked to help end period poverty by participating in Share the Dignity’s first Dignity Drive of 2021 during March. To help make period products more accessible for women across Australia, throughout the month Woolworths will donate five cents from each period care product sale, including pads, tampons, liners and period briefs. Funds raised will support the installation and maintenance of Dignity vending machines that dispense free period products. Residents are also able to donate period care products via the pink donation boxes located at the front of Woolworths stores at Beerwah and Maleny, or you can add a cash donation at Woolworths’s self-serve checkout registers using the donation button. In 2020, Dignity Drive donations were negatively impacted by COVID and restricted access to Dignity vending machines due to lockdowns, which also resulted in a growing number of women experiencing period poverty. Woolworths has been in partnership with Share the Dignity since 2019 and has donated more than $1.8 million to the charity, with more than a quarter of a million period care products also

Rotary gets behind the Travelling Jackaroo MALENY’S Sam Hughes, aka the Travelling Jackaroo, recently received a $500 grant from the Rotary Club of Maleny to support his efforts in raising funds for the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Dolly’s Dream and Lights on the Hill Trucking Memorial. Sam is embarking on an epic journey around Australia to speak to various groups on the need to support these wonderful organisations and encourage all who can to provide financial assistance for the valuable service they provide to our communities, particularly in rural and remote areas. Along the way Sam will be working for his keep as a rural worker on various properties. There is currently a shortage of farm labour and Sam reckons he can at least provide a little help.

In spite of the rain our bus driver Judy did a great job, giving an excellent commentary while taking us to some interesting places. Our itinerary included Green Valley Finger Limes. Thanks to Jade King for explaining the process of how these spiky bushes loaded with fruit are picked, packed and prepared for sale locally and for the overseas market. Volunteers from the Peachester Heritage Centre spoke to us about the origins of the museum and guided us through their world-class exhibits, including stories about the area’s early timber getting days. To ensure we kept up our energy levels there was also a morning tea at the Peachester Café.

The Great Obi Clean Up BUILDING on previous community concern and successful clean up events, local organisers have invited all community members to join them for the Great Obi Clean Up at Tesch Park, Maleny at 7.15am on Sunday, March 7. Family groups are particularly encouraged to attend for the opportunity to gain insight and education into the importance of keeping not only local waterways but the entire environment as clean as possible. One of the original catalysts behind the Great Obi Clean Up was the publication in recent years of a photo showing a platypus (named Bandit) with what appeared to be an exceptionally large red rubber band around the front part of its body. A couple of attempts were made to capture Bandit and remove the band but with no success. The image prompted great community concern and the Great Obi Clean Up originated as a practical response to the human impacts of litter and rubbish on local habitats and waterways. Thankfully, Bandit has been photographed recently with the band appearing to have gone. However, in

Clean up Australia Day locally

WHILE Clean Up Australia Day 2021 officially falls on Sunday, March 7, any day can be the perfect opportunity to organise a community clean up for your street, local park, sportsground or general area. The Landsborough Cubs and Joeys have decided to roll up their sleeves and will be cleaning up Skippy Park. Locally there are also a few registered clean-ups that the community can head along to. The Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Inc (GMAN) will be cleaning up the area around Settlers Rotary Park and the Glass House Mountains Visitor Centre from 8-10am. Contact Bernie on 0407 598 438 for more information. Around Beerwah, there will be a roadside clean-up meeting at 9am at the corner of Bells Creek Road and Coochin Road just off the Bruce Highway (Exit 179) with light refreshments provided. All welcome from 9-11.30am. Thumbs up to Beerwah State High School students who also got onboard with an early bird school-based event. If you are stepping up to help remember to wear sturdy shoes, a hat, sunscreen and insect repellent, and bring water. Additional heavy gloves can be useful. COVID-19 vaccines are being delivered to aged care facilities and to front line health workers across our region right now. In the hinterland vaccinations have begun in Palmwoods and Woombye in particular, with facilities in the region’s other suburbs being included over the next six weeks. In the months to come the vaccine will become available to everyone in our community. This is a landmark time in our fight against COVID-19 and one I know we have all been waiting for. To be effective, and to maintain our strong economic and health recovery from this pandemic, we need most people in Australia to receive a vaccination and although it will not be compulsory, I am hoping we will see a high rate of take up here in the hinterland. Division 5 Sunshine Coast Council

New furniture installation

I am pleased to announce that you will soon be able to enjoy a much-improved picnic experience at one of Division 5’s most iconic locations. Works are now under way to renew the outdoor furniture at the Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve. The project is staged to reduce construction impacts and tree protection measures are in place. A new gate will also be installed. Works are expected to be finished by the end of March (weather and site conditions permitting). The Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve includes 55ha of subtropical rainforest overlooking the Glass House Mountains landscape.

Have you checked out council’s free online tool to help residents and visitors better navigate local roads? Roads Hub - https://roads. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au – can help you

It can save you time and ensure you know where you might encounter delays, giving you the option to consider leaving earlier or to take an alternative route.

Council currently has many plans and projects open for community consultation. This includes the opportunity to review the Domestic Animal Management Plan update (feedback closes March 31) and the Recreation Parks Plan (feedback closes April 6). Your input and collective local knowledge is vital to ensure these important council initiatives meet your needs and expectations. Please visit https://haveyoursay. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au to get involved.

I’ve been getting a lot of correspondence recently asking for updates on the Bells Creek arterial road. The great news is that shovels hit the ground in October 2020 after a $35 million investment from the Palaszczuk Labor government. The construction of this road doesn’t just create 300 local jobs but once built will mean Beerwah residents will be able to get to Caloundra without touching the Bruce Highway or Steve Irwin Way. This is part of a $57 million congestion-busting plan for the Sunshine Coast with funding fully committed in the budget by the government in our plan for economic recovery.

YOU Renewed faith

ON New Year’s Eve we were passing through the township of Koumala (near Mackay) where I noticed an Armesto’s B-double parked on the outskirts of town. About 100m further down the road was a small car with a 12-foot boat and trailer. An elderly couple, the male with a wheelchair and appeared to be an amputee, sitting on the edge of the bitumen attempting to change a flat tyre along with the help of the truck driver. The Armesto’s driver, no doubt running to a time schedule had noticed the couple in need and returned to help. This act renews one’s faith in human nature. Bill Smerdon Wamuran

Racist ignorance

TO suggest that the arrival of white settlers to Indigenous people as being “disruptive”, as Paul Prociv’s letter (GC&M News, February 17) did, is totally ignorant and suggests a form of denialism for an event that was brutal and barbaric. And attacking the reputation of Indigenous author Bruce Pascoe is nothing more than a dog whistle hidden behind a thin veil of underlying racism. It doesn’t matter which academics are cited, unless they were there to witness the massacres that occurred in the Frontier Wars, the theft of Indigenous land and children being forcibly removed from their families, their versions of events carry no more weight than Pascoe’s. The white washing of our shared history does nothing to advance us as a nation or facilitate a healing process that would lead to greater unity. Unfortunately, the ignorance of our shared history results in the ignorance of our elected leaders. Our current PM was unaware of the blackbirding of the Kanakas to work on the cane farms in the north when he recently commented that there wasn’t

any slavery in Australia. I encourage readers to further their knowledge of our history but to look at it from the Indigenous side as well. I think they will find it distressing and traumatic as the traditional owners would have. I would suggest reading ‘Lands of Shame’ by Professor Helen Hughes, which is a contemporary account of the systems that still fail Indigenous people today. Until we have closed the gaps, the past is not as important as the present or the future. Chris McCoomb Beerwah

Christian fellowship

THIS year’s World Day of Prayer service will be held at the Baptist Church on Friday, March 5 at 9.30am. Despite COVID restrictions, we hope people will support this wonderful service, which has been compiled by the World Day of Prayer committee in Vanuatu. Look forward to seeing this service supported by our wonderful community. So come and help ‘build a strong foundation’ in Christian fellowship. Eunice Prickett World Day of Prayer Co-ordinator Glasshouse Country

COVID vaccine

I have had exhaustive correspondence with our federal member (Andrew Wallace) about the ability and the capability of the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) to manage this government’s vaccine roll out. To date, the TGA has only approved two vaccines whereas the British government has ordered 376 million doses of seven vaccines, with three approved (Oxford/ AstraZeneca, Pfizer/BioNTech and Moderna) and another four in the process of being approved (Novavax, Valneva, J&J/ Janssen and GSK/Sanofi). The Oxford/AZ vaccine has very low efficacy (60%) and cannot counter the various mutations, whereas the Pfizer

vaccine has the new mRNA technology that has proved capable of countering the various mutations, particularly the South African variation. I am a diabetic and will certainly not be taking the Oxford/AZ vaccine. Roy Clogstoun Maleny

Aboriginal culture and land

I knew I would upset some with my letter in GC&M News (February 2) as Bruce Pascoe’s book has been the subject of much criticism. However, what I did say in my summary was “read Bruce Pascoe’s book to grasp the scope of their developed culture”. My letter didn’t affirm his whole thesis but affirmed a look at a better understanding of the culture of First Nations people. It’s become the popular thing to attack Bruce’s book ‘Dark Emu’, especially with the Peter O’Brien book and his articles. What Paul Prociv (GC&M News February 16) did not comment on was the book ‘Warrior’ by Libby Connors, which was about Aboriginal relations and culture here in South East Queensland. Despite attacks on Pascoe, the history of Aboriginal culture and land practices in ancient Australia continues to show sophisticated land use practices. Cool burning and landscape management shows up in Bill Gammage’s book ‘The Biggest Estate on Earth’. He found Aboriginal people managed the land in a systematic and scientific fashion more than we have ever realised. He noted an extraordinarily complex system of land management using fire, the life cycles of plants and the natural flow of water to ensure plentiful wildlife and local foods throughout the year. The Budj Bim cultural landscape at Lake Condah in Victoria is to be a UNESCO World Heritage area. This site

contains evidence of ancient Aboriginal settlements and one of the world’s oldest aquaculture systems at 6,600 years. It’s older than Stonehenge and the Egyptian pyramids. It has several sites with the remains of stone huts evidence that Aboriginal people lived permanently in the area, farming and also harvesting eels and fish. Pascoe may have made some errors but he is giving us a new understanding of past Aboriginal land management. Richard Giles Conondale

Support appreciated

COVID meant that it’s been a tough year for local service clubs to do fundraising, particularly with the Maleny Show cancelled, no Wood Expo, etc. One project that has shone this year however has been the Maleny Rotary Calendar. Sales have been excellent and the local retailers who sell the calendar have done a magnificent job. The Rotary Club would like to offer a heartfelt thanks to the local community for their continued support in buying the calendar and to the retailers for their sales. Without this support the funds available to the club to continue their funding of local projects would have been severely diminished. Thanks from Rotary. Lionel Tilley Maleny Rotary Club

with nutritional medicine practitioner Claudia Roel

“LET your food be your medicine and your medicine, your food” – the words of Hippocrates, regarded as the father of medicine. Since day one in human history, food has been the source of health and wellbeing. Vegetables, herbs, flowers and spices have been used to heal in all different cultures all over the world. In our modern world, food has been considered just a source of flavour and pleasure more than a source of health. People have the need to satisfy cravings all the time and have totally forgotten that food is meant to create health. Fortunately for us, we can go back to basics and find efficient solutions to many conditions, treating the individual in all aspects of life. There are certain foods that might be poison for some and others can tolerate without any problem. Tomatoes are an example of this. Identifying and understanding what foods are beneficial for an individual can have positive results on their overall health, as well as a range of health conditions.

Little As gear up for new year GLASSHOUSE and Maleny Little Athletics centres are leaping into a new year with brand new sports gear thanks to grants and donations from Coles. Coles Sippy Downs donated five new marquees to Glasshouse Little Athletics while Maleny Little Athletics purchased new high jump mats with a combined grant of $4,400 from the Coles Little Athletics Community Fund. Glasshouse Little Athletics centre manager John Byford said the centre was thrilled to receive the new marquees from their local Coles store. John said a number of the marquees were damaged in a thunderstorm that hit the club carnival last season. “We are both incredibly excited and grateful to be receiving these marquees from Coles as we know these marquees are of a great quality,” he said. “These marquees will allow us to provide sun protection to athletes and volunteers at our home meets as well as at other centre carnivals, and regional and state championships.” Coles regional manager Heath Grant said Coles was pleased to continue its support of the Sunshine Coast’s budding athletes and parent volunteers.

Heath Grant, Coles regional manager, John Byford, Glasshouse District Little As centre manager, and Ray Blow, Sippy Downs Coles store manager, with some of the Glasshouse Little As “Little Athletics centres do such a great job in the community to help kids lead healthier, happier lives – that’s why we’re keen to support them where we can,” he said. “Coles Sippy Downs has been donating hundreds of bananas each week to Glasshouse, Maleny and USC Little Athletics centres for the past three years and when Glasshouse told us about their damaged marquees, we were delighted to be able to help them out with five new ones.”

Kandoo Joeys playgroup BEERWAH State School welcomed the Kandoo Joeys playgroup back for 2021 on their new weekly session day of Thursday, which kicked off on Thursday, February 25. Playgroup coordinator Linda Merwood said the group looked forward to welcoming lots of new families to the play-based learning environment this year. “Kandoo Joeys is open to all families with before-school aged children. We run every Thursday from 9-11am in J block next to the admin block here at Beerwah State School,” Linda said. “Our mission is to work with our community to create and provide opportunities for every child to learn through play, supporting a successful transition to school.” School principal Janet Austen said she was pleased that the school was again offering a supported playgroup that was specifically tailored to school settings. “We are excited to further extend our school’s community engagement. It’s a lovely way for parents to meet others in our community and for families to enjoyably familiarise themselves with a school environment,” Janet said.

Laid back jazz

‘SHAKESPEARE: the Guided Tour’ will be the Maleny Players’ first production for 2021 on the weekend of March 12-14 at the playhouse in the Maleny Showground. The play has been devised and directed by Andrew Wallace and is a lively, fast-paced compilation of Shelly Love and Kim brief excerpts from a range Zwalf in rehearsals of plays, each relating to a particular theme. Linking narration from the ‘tour guide’ provides context as well as authentic live music. Although Shakespeare’s plays were written 400 years ago, they are full of characters, dilemmas and stories we all still recognise. The Maleny Players’ production will be a great opportunity for students to experience some of Shakespeare’s greatest works. The show will also revive memories and remind many that Shakespeare is not there to be revered but to be relished. Evening shows will be held from 7pm on Friday and Saturday nights and matinee performances will be held from 2pm on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for under 18s. Bookings can be made online via Maleny Players website www.malenyplayers.org For more information contact 0428 716 015 or 0467 0380 755.

Dragon fruit AN interesting fruit to admire, dragon fruit (pitaya) is an equally interesting fruit to grow and a delicious treat to enjoy! It’s easy to see why the fruit, which is native to Central and South America, is called dragon fruit with its pink, crimson, yellow or red coloured skin and fleshy green scales. They are grown from Hylocereus and Selenicereus species, which are climbing cacti. The edible part of the fruit inside is a stark contrast to the exterior with delicate white or red flesh and tiny black seeds, with a mild yet sweet flavour. Curious to learn more about this fascinating fruit, which you’ll be seeing in markets and grocery stores now, GC&M News chatted to local dragon fruit farmer Karen Martin from Yanalla Farms. She also shared her refreshing smoothie recipe with us. Dragon fruit are in season now but, typically, how long is the season? Generally, the season goes for six months. We start to pick in late December and it remains

constant throughout the first half of the year. We’re picking every 30-35 days as the fruit follows the cycle of the moon.

If growing from a cutting, veins of the plant go up along the stem. A handy tip to be sure you’re planting the correct way, is ensuring the ‘arrow’ along the stem is upside down.

How are they grown? The white flesh variety are grown on a post and the plants grow up and out, a little like an umbrella. The red flesh variety are grown on a trellis and will usually have three plants per post. It generally takes about two years to grow to trellis stage, and usually we will see fruit within 18 months. The flowers bloom for just one night per fruit cycle and the show they put on is absolutely spectacular. Following the phases of the moon, the beautiful delicate flower, which look a little like an oversized orchid, opens and is pollinated overnight. Around 30-35 days later the fruit is ready to be picked.

Even though cacti are hardy plants that require little water, dragon fruit produce better fruit if they are well watered.

How do you know they are ripe and how are they harvested? We know the fruit is ready to be picked depending on its colour. They continue to ripen after being picked and if stored correctly have a relatively long shelf life. As they grow on a

IN SEASON cactus plant, the plant has a spine that runs up the middle, so we need to use secateurs to release the fruit.

Can you describe the taste and how are they best enjoyed? The texture is much like a kiwi fruit and they have a delicate sweetness with an explosion of seeds. The white flesh variety can be likened to a fruit salad taste but I think the red flesh variety is a bit sweeter. A simple way to enjoy them is with a little fresh lime juice squeezed over them or they work really well in a fruit salad or smoothie.

Dragon fruit is often referred to as a super fruit. Rich in vitamins C, B1, B2 and B3, they also contain minerals including calcium, iron, magnesium and phosphorus, and are a good source of fibre, protein and omega essential fatty acids.

• WAIT until the rain eases a bit before giving your gardens a fertiliser boost coming into autumn, or it’ll just wash away and be wasted. • At the start of the month, put spring flowering bulbs in the fridge vege crisper and plant out at the end of the month. • If you’re planting seedlings for a spring display, it is timely to watch out for cut worms. This soil-borne pest chews through the seedling stem at ground level. At the first sign, spray with pyrethrum in the late evening. • Try not to plan any work in the backyard that needs heavy machinery or vehicles, until the soil dries and firms up. Otherwise you risk compacting the ground and churning up soggy soil – not a good practice. • White cedar caterpillars are on the move. Wrap a hessian bag around the trunk and check underneath

• •

for the damaging insects as they’ll congregate there during the day. Squash or spray them with a pyrethrum spray. Start planting broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower seedlings from mid-March. Watch out for little green caterpillars, as they can destroy your seedlings overnight. At the start of the month dig some lime through the soil where you want to plant bush or climbing peas, sweet peas or snow peas. Plant at the end of the month. Gypsum should be applied to the lawns now and allowed to wash in with the rains. This will open up the structure of the soil and help grass roots grow deeper. Plant strawberry runners into well-mulched beds with lots of compost and manure towards the end of the month.

Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens FRIENDS of Maroochy Regional Bushland Botanic Gardens are a dynamic group of community volunteers who help care for, enhance and showcase the unique 82ha botanical garden oasis located at Tanawha. This unique natural bushland setting can offer both a hive of activity as well as serene spot for contemplation and solitude, depending on your needs. The gardens showcase local flora and fauna as well as providing family friendly walks/activities, experiential gardens, sculptures, guided walks, programs and more – so why not get involved? The Friends are the community backbone of this unique and amazing facility that combines managed gardens, natural bushland, art and ecology, and plants with pleasure. Working in close collaboration with the Sunshine Coast Council, this not-for-profit organisation has a range of volunteering opportunities ranging from gardening, guiding and information services to IT support, botany and bush care. New friends are encouraged and welcomed to get involved. From Monday-Sunday, March 1-7, curious community members will have the chance to find out more about current volunteer opportunities as well as explore informative displays on the history of the gardens and volunteer programs, on-the-spot free tours, guided walks and workshops, and chats with current Friends to discover more. All activities during the week will be held in or start at the Arts and Ecology Centre, 33 Palm Creek Road, Tanawha between 10am-2pm, with light refreshments

Contributed by Patricia Bradford

So many great plants to talk about this month, so its hard to know where to start, but here is as good as anywhere! Richmond Bird Wing Vines – Pararistolochia praevenosa are looking great and the regular moist weather is the perfect time to establish. Ideally they like a moist semi-shaded position, but are adaptable to full sun if they have a cool and moist root run. Hop Goodenia - Goodenia ovata are a fast-growing small shrub 1-1.5m that add a great flash of yellow to the garden with their bright flowers. Downy Zieria – Zieria littoralis is an interesting southern species, we are trialing as a sun loving groundcover / low growing shrub, with furry grey foliage and white to pink flowers. One of our favorite groundcovers is the Native Plumbago – Plumbao zeylanica. They are adaptable to sun or shade, fat growing, just about always flowering and host plant for the Zebra Blue Butterfly. We have some good sized Native Round Lime – Citrus australis available in 4ltr pots, which are great prickly habitat for small native birds and with the bonus of a bushfood lime in a few years time. Lastly we have good numbers of big Queensland Tree Waratah – Alloxylon flammeum in 140mm pots ready to plants and add their stunning floral show to your garden in the years to come…. and then there’s the hundreds of other species we have available, native plants for all situations.

New standards on the way for household energy technology IF, like many, you’re planning for your future by utilising alternative energy such as solar, the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) recently announced that compulsory new standards are on the way for household energy technology. Considering the rise in installation and use of solar power in Australia, news of the new standards that will apply to inverters – valuable equipment that converts direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC) making it possible for home

electrical devices to function – has been welcomed in order to ensure our power grid can support a whole new energy mix. AEMC chief executive Benn Barr said the new minimum technical standards, which will take effect from December 2021, are part of a raft of changes looking to future-proof the power system so it can confidently handle more solar. “These new standards allow us to do two important things at once – welcome more new technologies into the power

system and at the same time help protect grid stability,” he said. “We need to do this in a way that helps more people connect, protects those that don’t and helps the system run smoothly overall.”

The changes will ensure that household energy systems won’t trip or disconnect when there are voltage disturbances on the network. It will apply only to new and upgraded systems rather than existing ones.

Maleny Bowls Club

Contributed by Miles Allen We welcomed teams from Mapleton, Kilcoy, Glasshouse and Woodford to our monthly pairs competition, with Woodford’s Wolfgang Gleisenberg and Daryl Pollet proving to be the champions of the day, both winning their games with a margin of +15. They turn up every month to this fixture and it was good to see them bowling well and winning. Our Twilight Bowls on Wednesday nights has been notable by the number of players who optimistically turn up even though rain is forecast. The green might have been a little bit damp last week, but it didn’t stop our players from enjoying themselves. The Three Flamingos led by John Williams are perched on top of the table after narrowly escaping being beaten by the JAM team. RPT, the Golfers and the Oblimeys are not far behind. Mo’s Marauders have played superbly recently and are a threat to those higher up the ladder. At Scroungers during the last two weeks, we have had a variety of winners, with players who played very well one week, not always playing well the second week, and vice versa. The only person to win two weeks in a row was Brett Gillis. In both games he was forced into a play-off. Our play-offs are a bit like tiebreakers at the Australian Tennis Open but with slightly less prize money. Last week he beat Barb Whitfield and

Other winners during the last two weeks have been Marilyn Podmore, Mick Bulger, Don Ginns, Jim Wiedman and Barb Whitfield. We look forward to another week of bowls when we get the chance to hone our techniques, polish our deliveries and enjoy the friendly atmosphere at Maleny Bowls Club.

Lightening visit to Tibros Contributed by Tracey Charleson

PREPARATION for team Tibro’s 2021 netball season is under way and our juniors had a very special guest join them for skills and drills recently. Thanks to Pure Gold Pineapples, Sunshine Coast Lightning player and Australian netball rep player Steph Wood graced the courts with her delightful presence. Steph was hands-on with the skills and drills and had the juniors captivated. She was generous in sharing her passion and commitment to the game. There were a lot of eager hands held high ready to ask her questions, which she cheerfully answered. Pure Gold Pineapples had delicious pineapple on hand that was enjoyed by

BeeGees Football Club Contributed by Jodie Morgan AFTER our two sign-on days we have 22 junior teams and seven senior teams, with our competitive teams’ season starting on March 20. Most teams have been at the club training during the past few weeks and have played a few friendly games already this year. Mini roos is still to be confirmed but the likely start date is April 24. We are yet to hold our U6 to U9 muster, which

will be notified on our Facebook page. Female Football Week from March 1-8 celebrates 100 years of females in football. With the FIFA World Cup coming to Australia in 2023, our BeeGees female teams have expanded to six this year. We look forward to seeing everyone come to the club for our home games in 2021 to support our Premier teams. Thank you to our ongoing sponsors and supporters. Let’s bring on 2021!

Toppy said Amy had been an integral part of the squad for the past few years, bringing with her a wealth of experience representing both at state and national levels. “Amy is well known for her game changing saves and is an inspiration to the squad both on and off the field,” he said.

Amy said she was excited for the year ahead at BeeGees. “We have an awesome bunch of girls this year and the vibe and atmosphere at training has been great. “We have an incredible group of coaching staff with us and I’m looking forward to playing under Toppy’s direction,” Amy said. The Range Croquet Club

Contributed by Ken Barker

SUNDAY, February 14 was spent dodging showers in the afternoon. Lynette Evans went down to Wallace Roy 3-8 on lawn two. Stuart Craig and Janelle Wilson were 5-all as heavy rain threatened while Denise Howarth and Donna Manning were down in a game of golf croquet trailing 2-4 at the same time. On lawn one Kath Smith went through the wrong hoop at the wrong time unsettling her against Val Carbery and possibly contributing to her subsequent 6-11 loss. Vince Carbery could never quite hit his straps against Ken Barker losing 3-20 in a rainshortened game. A group of young ladies who are all locals and friends of Alice Spittle enjoyed some hours on the lawns on a recent Saturday afternoon. They played Aussie croquet with eight players at a time. Everyone had a great time, vowing to do it again soon. Thursday, February 18 looked like rain.

Only four players turned out and they were greeted by a heavy shower that lasted about ten minutes as they took to the lawn. Sustenance was called for and was taken, the weather lifted and in the ensuing games Ken was soundly beaten by Gillian Bradley going down 4-7, while Wallace beat Janelle 9-2. While Cancer is known for being a homebody, this week you’ll break out of your shell as the Sun muscles in on your ninth house of adventure. Book a holiday with best friends or perhaps a romantic road trip with your partner. Keep your ears perked for a lucrative business opportunity that may present itself in a subtle way.

Parental figures, older friends or siblings feature prominently in your chart at present – and it’s high time. For whatever reason, you haven’t paid enough attention to the people capable of helping you the most, but your future life and career may depend on you making peace with the past. Listen to their points of view, with respect.

You’ve played by the rules for so long, you may have forgotten what fun life can be. This is your time in the astrological spotlight. Enjoy yourself – you’ve certainly earned it. To help you, Venus (the planet of indulgence and romance) graces your sign until the 22nd, encouraging you to do all the things you should have done long ago.

Get out there and get doing Aries! This week do whatever it is that makes you come alive. Take action on your best projects and trash whatever’s outmoded. If you still feel some self-doubt, don’t. Trust that everything is unfolding in your best interests. So go ahead – follow your heart and let your light shine.

The cosmos encourages leaving behind troublesome friends who bring you down. You also enter a week of deep reflection with personal aims and social conscience under review. Admittedly, there have been a few challenging moments recently but you’ve grown beyond earlier limitations. Taureans are ready to try something new.

With current stress and uncertainty heaving you here, there and everywhere, you’ve a right to feel confused. One minute you’re up, the next down. If doubt invades your confidence, remember your talents and strengths. You’re loaded with them. Unleash all your wonderful creativity. You may even stumble across a new hobby or career.

Just when you need help, along comes a planetary ally or two. Not a moment too soon as you realise not everyone’s out to get you. There are, however, some conditions. Bury the past and start concentrating on life as you’d like it. Except, perhaps, financially. For now, throw hard earned cash into a locked vault.

While your Virgo composure usually keeps you out of trouble, less sensible minds seem determined to stay on a collision course. So, again, you may have to clean up after others. Also, recently you’ve been more insular. Later this week, emotional barriers start to fall and you once again confidently share your love.

When individuals are drawn to each other, the energies can occasionally be unstable. Sometimes it’s two steps forward and one step back. The right balance for love or friendship to bloom often takes patience. Should you need to applaud another’s good fortune, please do. Your support matters, especially this week.

A phase of your life is coming to a close, so prepare for disruption. Relationships built on sand can expect erosion. Scorpio discontent could even extend to clandestine meetings. Singles too may prefer a secret dalliance. Finances feature strongly, as does the need to chase professional dreams. An interesting week ahead.

Though you’d prefer to shift into neutral, the cosmos asks that you continue in fast gear. You’ve been doing it tough for some time. Illness, work pressures, family matters – too many demands have drained your stirring spirit. Thankfully, better moments lie ahead. Late week offers financial opportunities or renewed sentimental ties.

This week, most Aquarians have the planets well and truly on side. While the rest of us try to cope with our tedious lot, you’re spared similar frustrations. Money looks plentiful, making a welcome change from recent cash embarrassment. Spend up while the going’s good. Right now too, there’s much to be said for team effort.

Get smarter mortgage advice & the most suitable loan for you

For better or for worse, this week spells temptation. Without mentioning names, someone’s turning life upside down with their enticing antics. Part of the fun seems to be in leading you towards extravagance, probably at a time when you can least afford it. Enjoy what you already have and make the best of it.

Putting your grand plans into motion could prove tricky this week. Pushing your agenda before it’s primed to go is not a recipe for success. Activate your creativity and let it lead you in the right direction: with art, a journal, make a collage. It could generate that major ‘a-ha’ moment that provides you with a key piece of the puzzle.

Certain realisations can take time to dawn on us. The tell-tale signs often come in the form of a project or relationship that’s lost its appeal. The question is: are you really interested anymore? If you feel like letting your game drop, maybe it’s for good reason. The planets encourage you to stop awhile and take stock. Clear your head.

It seems that what you most want at this time you can’t have – that proverbial forbidden fruit. Or you still might go for it, despite knowing that you’re making a bad choice and for all the wrong reasons. It seems you want instant gratification, Gemini, despite all the warning signs. Expect consequences.

There’s not much in the heavens to help you along this week. Basically, it’s up to you to stay in control because the planets are spoiling for a squabble. Although under pressure, don’t give in to conflict. And there’s no consolation to be found in comfort eating either. Try a portion of exercise instead.

With independence as your driving force, you’re tired of pandering to others’ egos. At the same time, the planets encourage new work and financial schemes. so expand your network of contacts. Late week continues to keep you busy with noticeable improvement in your interactions. Romance isn’t out of the question either.

It’s not like you to be so biased Virgo. Just remember everyone has a right to their own opinions and that could get you back on talking terms. Although tired, you have enough energy to wave the white flag and agree to meet on neutral territory. Chances of ending conflict improve with a mutual meeting of minds. Call a truce.

Libran compassion is called upon this week. You may encounter some resistance because others are feeling embarrassed by their current situation. Thankfully, you help lift their hopes as you remind them that life can be enjoyed despite current circumstances. No surprise too if loved ones benefit from your financial generosity.

Looks like you’re not as pliable as some would like. Scorpios are too astute to be duped but this won’t stop those lesser mortals from trying. You’ve half a mind to call their bluff but the best thing to do is go about your business and ask others to do the same. Look after your own interests for a while.

Sometimes Sagittarian naivety leads you to put your trust in situations that aren’t reliable. You did not ask to be hurt but hurt you were. At some point you must forgive those who have caused you pain. If the time’s not yet right, don’t force anything. Be gentle with yourself. A meditative solo walk in nature could be just what you need.

Occasionally you’re given goals that seem to fall short of fair. Don’t fret. It’s all just part of the great cosmic joke. The fun’s not always at your expense and this week’s targets are well within reach. If nothing else, this should throw you into a more positive frame of mind. It’s a busy time, laden with extra responsibilities.

There’s always someone who will try to nudge you into a reluctant corner. If you’re finding it difficult to retain your autonomy, lock into the slipstream of a strong Jupiter, which is happy to steam roll opponents out of your way. Mars also offers help, encouraging a review of boundaries. As the borders change, so do the rules – they become yours.

JUST FOR LAUGHS Right neighbourly

A farmer drove to a neighbour’s farmhouse and knocked on the door. A boy, about 9, opened the door. “Is your dad or mum home?” the famer said. “No, they went to town,” the boy said. “How about your brother Howard? Is he here?” the farmer asked. “No, he went with mum and dad to town,” the boy said. The farmer stood for a few minutes, shifting from one foot to the other and mumbling to himself.

The boy said: “I know where all the tools are if you want to borrow one, or can I give dad a message.” “Well,” said the farmer uncomfortably. “I really want to talk to your dad about your brother Howard getting my daughter Suzy pregnant.” The boy thought for a moment then said: “You’ll have to talk to my dad about that. I know he charges $500 for the bulls but I have no idea how much he charges for Howard.”
