Hi Everyone Well last week I was busy banging on in my column about how much I was looking forward to the election being over – now I just want to know the outcome for our division. It is a strange thing when I am writing my columns, I don’t always think about what the readers will think about my comments. So last week when I bumped into Cr Anna doing her last official public duties on ANZAC Day she was very nice about my complaints about her actions causing us to have what seemed like the world’s longest election campaign. As Cr Anna has been representing our division since 1996 and is now one of the longest serving Councillors, no doubt our community will have high expectations of our new councillor. So it is unfortunate that as we go to print at lunch time on Monday it doesn’t look like we will be able to
bring you the final results. While it is looks like Mark Jamieson will be our Major with 60% of votes counted he has 32.98% of the votes with Warren Blee next on 17.52%, and in Division 5 Jenny McKay has received an amazing 72.88% of the almost 60% of primary votes counted it is not so clear in Division 1. As we went to print the results with 60% of primary votes counted are Rick Baberowski is out in front on 31.53% of votes with Bob McLean on 23.01%, Ann Ross on 18.14%, Steve Attrill on 15.64% and Rhys Reynolds 11.69%, but with more counting to go and preferences we probably won’t know for a few more days. Regards,

Community answers Beerwah brigade’s SOS
Everyday banking Home loans Credit cards Personal loans Business accounts and lending
The community has thrown their support behind the Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade after a callous theft earlier this year left the brigade with a bill of more than $30,000 in damage and stolen property.
66 Simpson Street, Beerwah Phone: 5494 0511 Fax: 5494 6797 Monday to Thursday 9:30am to 4:00pm Friday 9:30am to 5:00pm
When Glass House resident Matt Gunn and his brother heard about the attack, they were devastated, and considered how they could help out, so recently, the pair chipped in and purchased two chainsaws which they donated to the brigade. “It’s simply a wonderful donation from a local family,” said the brigade’s first officer, Lou Spann. It was a similar story for local aborists Rob Keeble and Ross Kite, who, upon hearing of the brigade’s woes with an exotic tree that was poisoning the station’s water supply, generously donated hours of their time to cut the tree back. It took the pair in excess of five hours with a cherry picker to cut back the massive tree, a South African Acacia, which was overhanging the brigade’s shed. “These are two great men who donated so much of their own time to come and help us out,” first officer Lou Spann said. “They were both very disgusted that the situation (of the brigade being told they would have to fund the cost to trim the tree) had gotten to that point,
Greg Sutton, Beerwah RFB secretary, with Faith and her brother Jack, and the donated chainsaws and we are just so grateful for their generosity. “If we had to pay for it ourselves, it would have cost us thousands,” he said. Support has also been received from the Glasshouse Mountains Rotary Club and the local Mens Shed, who also donated much needed equipment to the brigade, two petrol blowers. “The support we’ve received from our local community is just tremendous, and it’s just fortunate that we haven’t been called out to any major incidents while we’ve been without essential equipment. Lou said now that insurance payouts were starting to be finalised, the brigade could commence the process of replacing some of the damaged and stolen equipment, however he also added that donations were always greatly appreciated.

With services in Landsborough, Beerwah and Glass House, ANZAC Day in our local community was commemorated with all the dignity and respect the national day of remembrance deserved. Not only did local RSL clubs host dawn services and marches, it was also an opportunity for schools across our region to get involved and pay tribute to all the lives lost in the name of Australia’s freedom. At Landsborough, the Landsborough State School students, their families and teachers marched with pride as they participated in the Landsborough Community ANZAC Day ceremony. Students laid wreaths which they had prepared themselves in class and school captains Daniel Marjanovic and Sherkia Sciortino spoke at the service. The spirit and enthusiasm shown by the Landsborough State School students proves that the ANZAC legacy is in safe hands with the younger generation.

At Glasshouse Country Christian College’s ANZAC service, held on Tuesday, April 24, family connections were celebrated and commemorated with guest speakers Private Kurt Peasley and Lance Corporal Ben Hopson who is the son of GCCC’s Librarian Technician, Cathy Hopson. Twenty-three-year-old Private Peasley spoke of his time in Afghanistan mentoring local members of the Afghan national Army and leading them on patrols, training tradesmen and supplying farming and medical equipment, while Lance Corporal Ben Hopson, 22, has served in East Timor helping the Timorese Police and Army, and said his time spent in East Timor made him realise just what a lucky country Australia is. The family theme continued, with one student from Year 4 who read of his great ‘Grandpop Snowy’ who was on a navy ship and witnessed the bombing of Japan. Another told of her grandfather being a tunnel rat in the Vietnam War, and another spoke of his ‘Great Poppy’ who was a galley gunner in an aeroplane called the Sunderland which was attacked by eight enemy fighter plans but returned home safely. At Beerwah State School, a stand of seven mango trees planted in 1921 continues to serve as a fitting memorial, with each one representing a past student or community member who died serving in World War 1. Although the original name plaques were lost throughout the years, a Stone of Remembrance was positioned under the ancient trees late last century with two plaques. One has the record of the names of those who lost their lives in World War 1 and World War 2, and the other explains the history of the trees origin. For more photos from ANZAC Day services in Landsborough, Beerwah and Glass House, see Out and About, page 20. www.gcnews.com.au
Humble award recipient
Michael Noonan, a volunteer with the Auxiliary Fire Service at Beerwah for the past eight years, is like most volunteers. He doesn’t do it for any recognition, but because it is important to him to contribute to our community.
And when he isn’t being an Auxiliary Firie he works as an Air Traffic Controller with Air Series Australia and clearly his employers think highly of his volunteer efforts as they nominated him for an Australia Day award. While Michael doesn’t see his work as being special, he was happy for us to share his achievements with the community as an opportunity to encourage others to get involved. They cover a massive area between the Beerburrum on ramp right through to the Big Cart Track at Landsborough and back up the hill to Peachester and operate 24/7 as required. Michael said about 80 per cent of the work that they do is attending crashes, but their duties include structural and environmental fires, chemical spills, technical rescue, building compliance inspections and community education. “Currently there are 11 regular members including two new members; they are a really great group of guys and very professional in their approach,” he said. Because of the nature of being called out at short notice, volunteers need to be available during the day and need to live within a five minute drive of the station. Ironically for Michael, since receiving the award in January, he has been unable to assist in any of the emergency responses as flooding during the month has caused significant damage to the bridge on Tower Lane at Beerwah that he needs to access to get to the station. Council has done some temporary alterations which means he now has a major detour which has tripled the time it takes him to get to Beerwah Station. Michael is looking forward to Council finding a satisfactory outcome that will allow him to be able to get back on the ‘firetruck’. If you would like to find out more about joining the Auxiliary Fire Brigade check out their website www.fire.qld.gov.au/employment/auxiliary
Business Buzz with Vanessa Rumble The team at Ray White Beerwah have shown this week what good guys they are by agreeing to list a property for free for a local Beerburrum family who have been forced to move away from the area because of the special care needs of their new bub. The three bedroom property is located at 10 Carriage Place, Beerburrum and is described as a quaint country cottage situated on over a quarter acre block. Next week GCNews will bring you the family’s story but we just wanted to say thumbs up to Ray White Beerwah. 5/70 Simpson Street, Beerwah, phone 5439 0300. If you have popped into Neddy’s Nosebag at Beerwah recently you will have spotted two familiar faces Kathy Taylor and Lesley Wooler back in behind the counter. The dynamic mother and daughter duo are looking forward to catching up with all their old customers. You can expect all your favourites on the menu and their friendly smile and a chat when you call in. They will be opening Monday – Saturday at 8.00am and closing times of Monday – Wednesday, 5.00pm, Thursday and Friday 6.30pm and Saturday 3.00pm. Neddy’s is at 60 Simpson Street, Beerwah, phone 5494 0600.
Club Glass House is making sure that anyone travelling along Coonowrin Road will definitely know where they are. The new sign was produced by local Beerwah Business – ATL Graphic, and the club is really pleased with the final results. The next big thing for the club will be their Country and Western Night on May 26. You will want to get your boots and cowboy hat on and get ready to enjoy a good ole Aussie three course buffet, and be entertained by Sharyn Bell who is well known for performing at Country Music Musters. Club Glass House is at 10 Coonowrin Road, Glass House Mountains, phone 5436 5000. www.gcnews.com.au

Stan Ceglinski enthralls Expo crowds with tall tales and demonstrations of bygone days All roads lead to the Maleny Showgrounds this weekend (May 5 - 6) as thousands of visitors converge for the 16th annual Maleny Wood Expo ‘From Chainsaw to Fine Furniture’. Lovers of timber and woodwork come from Bundaberg and Byron, from Toowoomba and Tweed Heads, from the north, the south and the west to soak up the wonderful world of wood. Expo Coordinator Steve McLeish said the small size and beautiful setting of the Showgrounds brings visitors back year after year. “They love the friendly country atmosphere and the cheerfulness of our local volunteers. And we’ve been told that the woodwork is on a par with the big city wood shows! “We have a record number of exhibitors this year, and a great line-up of entertainment and food for visitors when they need a break,” he said. Great Scott’s street theatre antics are hugely popular with both kids and adults and musicians will include Maleny’s Gypsy Loco, Mumbo Jumbo and a host of others. There are wood workshops to join, tool and equipment demonstrations, gourmet produce to buy and a host of other activities and displays. For more information visit http://www.malenywoodexpo.org.au
Maleny show celebrates 75 years The Maleny Agricultural Show will celebrate 75 years of operation this year on June 1 - 2 and to recognise the ‘Year of the Farmer’ the Show Society is encouraging all Farmers in the district, young and old, to attend the Show's official opening on Friday, June 1 at 2.00pm. The Maleny Show Society has been established for 90 years and as 2012 is the ‘Year of the Farmer’ there is no better way to celebrate than an enjoyable day at the Maleny Show. President of the Maleny Show Society Mr Ivan Hankinson said that the Show Society encourages all farmers to become involved. “It is important that we, as a community, celebrate and recognise how significant our farmers have been to the success of the Show in the past as well as their contribution to the district over the past century,” said Mr Hankinson. For more information contact the Maleny Show Society on 5494 2008 or www.malenyshowsociety.org.au
Charity Sports is on again in 2012 Planning is already underway for this year’s Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival which will be held on Saturday, August 25 at the Beerwah Sportsground. This will be the 41st year of the Carnival and as always will be a great day filled with good old-fashioned family entertainment. There will be a fabulous mix of events and entertainment for young and old. Equestrian events, Shetland Pony races, kid’s athletic events, vintage tractors and cars, produce stalls and food! The Cancer Council’s current research program is funded, in part, by the money raised from this annual Charity Sports Day. There will be more information about these events in the pages of this newspaper as the day gets closer, but for now – mark the date in your diary!

New dating phenomenon hits Glass House
Tennis Club hits 85
What do you get when you mix a group of single adults looking for love and a bright pink alarm clock? Speed dating, of course. It’s the dating phenomenon that’s taking the singles’ world by storm, and now, it’s arrived in the hinterland. Dash Dating is the new venture of best friends and Glass House Mountains residents Jodi Swyny and Amanda Smith. Having tried internet dating with no success, Jodi, who has been single for the past six years, stumbled across speed dating during a visit to Brisbane. And although the evening didn’t end up with her finding love, she did walk away with a determination to bring the concept closer to home. Together with the expertise of Amanda, who despite being happily married, has a number of single friends who are in a similar position to Jodi, the pair have joined forces to bring the dating experience to locals.
The Glenview Mooloolah Tennis Club is having a Player Reunion and 85 Year Celebration on Sunday, May, 20. The afternoon will commence at 2.00pm at the courts at 121 Connection Road, Glenview. A book will be available for purchase dating back to 1927 and photos will be on display as well. If you have any photos please bring them along. ‘There was a time in most rural communities in Australia when the ant-bed court was a familiar sight and groups of locals would gather to play. The surface would be rolled by pulling a large concrete roller or some other makeshift version and lines were marked out in lime. What took place as the game of tennis was played was far more than just aspects of sport and physical fitness. In reality, the very social fibre of communities was knit together through the friendly battles on those courts and the conversations that took place on the sidelines.’ An excerpt from the book on the history of the Glenview Mooloolah Tennis Club. For more information please phone Jenny 5496 9292 / 0408 726 736 or Chris 5494 8941/0447 648 941 or check us out on Facebook.
Jodi Swyny and Amanda Smith
“The idea behind it is to help singles meet other singles in a safe, fun and comfortable environment,” Jodi said. “Particularly in smaller towns, it’s more difficult to meet people, and this is a great alternative to online dating,” Jodi said. The other benefit of speed dating is there’s no fear of rejection, and absolutely no pressure to hook up with anyone on the night, she said. Amanda said based on the market research the pair had done, there seemed to be a fair amount of interest in an alternative to online dating. Jodi agreed. “Speed dating is fun, safe and sophisticated, and at the very least, it’s a great way to get together with other single friends and meet new people.” She said they also hoped to do other events on a regular basis; including special themed events such as a B and S ball, at venues across the region. Dash Dating will host their first speed dating event on Saturday, May 12 at the Caboolture RSL. The cost of the evening is $49.00, which includes two free drinks, hot finger food, and between 12 and 15 ‘dates’, each up to six minutes in duration. At the end of the evening, participants complete a ‘match card’, nominating who they would like to meet up with again, and the rest, as they say, is history! For more information, or to register for the first event, check out the pair’s facebook page at www.facebook.com/dashdating or online at www.dashdating.com.au. Alternatively, Amanda and Jodi are both happy to speak to people who might be interested, but have questions about how the concept works. Call Jodi on 0420 968 863 or Amanda 0478 084 007.

From the Schools
Student Leaders Ceremony
On Monday, April 23, Landsborough State School conducted their 2012 Student Leaders Investiture Ceremony. Principal, Kristy Walton proudly presented the School Captains, Vice Captains, House Captains and Student Councillors with their badges. Special guest, Max Jackson (Rhino Keeper from Australia Zoo), inspired students with his address on Leadership. The Rhinos were too big to bring along, however Max made up for it with some snakes instead! As the Student Leaders took their pledge, they also went into the history books as the first group of students to lead Landsborough State School under the newly launched school logo and the new motto ‘Your Future, Our Focus’. They now proudly look forward to an exciting year ahead.

From Emma Offord Glasshouse Country Christian College correspondent
Our amazing ANZAC adventure
In the last week of term, the Year 11s from Glasshouse Country Christian College went on the camp of their lives at Helidon. The ANZAC themed camp brought us all together and taught us the real meaning of teamwork and mateship. Throughout the camp we did lots of different team building activities and had a ball at the same time. A couple of highlights from the camp would have to be… well, all of them! A firm favourite was The Mud Pit which was created to show some of the conditions on Kokoda Trail. We had to carry an injured team mate through the track without them getting muddy. It kind of worked, and we worked as a team and had a lot of fun. The fun continued on the bus ride home from camp. Let’s just say that if you combine teenagers confined to a bus with a large reel of duct tape, there will be many hours of amusement. The guys had a hilarious idea of duct taping someone to the seat. The priceless moment of the look on the captives face is a hard one to forget, but luckily we have photographic evidence. These were my favourite memories but I could write a whole page about all the other moments recreating some of the ANZAC camaraderie and challenges. Lastly I have to mention the food, it was scrumptious! My older brother had gone on the camp two years ago when it was his turn and couldn’t stop talking about the food. He said it was wonderful and he was right. For all the future Year 11s, this camp is definitely one to look forward to. It truly is an amazing adventure.

Beerwah students make the pledge As part of the national Close the Gap Day on Thursday, March 22, the students at Beerwah State School pledged to ‘Close the Gap’. Teachers, students and parents acknowledged that the difference between indigenous and non-indigenous life expectancy is not acceptable. Throughout the day, students signed a banner pledging that they wanted to ‘Close the Gap’ and stop inequality in indigenous health. This message was reinforced by a focus on healthy living with students taking part in a variety of activities. All students brought a piece of fruit to school which was made into a fruit salad by parent volunteers. At morning tea, the whole school enjoyed a fresh fruit salad and learnt that healthy eating is important for a healthy life. This was followed in the afternoon by a focus on activity

What happens if part of my laptop fails out of warranty?
When laptops fail outside warranty period, component repairs can be very costly! However, innovative and inexpensive solutions sometimes work really well. Sound: The motherboard (your laptop’s ‘internal organs’) generates the sound, so resolving sound failure can be very expensive. In most cases, an external USB sound device can do the job very nicely! Keyboard: If your laptop keyboard is tatty or fails, replacement will be very costly! A simple, cheap solution is to plug in a USB keyboard! Battery: If your battery no longer holds its charge, you can replace it; several companies now produce batteries for most brands of laptop. Monitor: Where portability was not an issue, we even helped a client hook up a monitor when the laptop screen failed. And finally, if you run out of USB ports, splash out on a USB hub. Powered varieties plug into a mains outlet and provide best solution for USB wireless modems, back-up drives and webcams; non-powered varieties are great for mouse, keyboard and USB flash drives. See www.mooloolahpc.com.au for these and more tips. For the most economical solution to suit your computer budget and usage needs call Gus at Mooloolah Computers. Phone 0405 125 662. Community Group Updates Glasshouse Country SES
The Combined Probus Club of Glasshouse Mountains Inc Contributed by Lois Gilbey
Contributed by Dave Erbacher
First mountain rescue for 2012 At 11.00 am on Saturday, April 21 the Glasshouse Country SES Unit was activated to assist two climbers on the east face of Mt Tibrogargen. Two young men from Brisbane had climbed up the western trail and proceeded to free climb down the east face. One of the men slipped and fell, badly dislocating his shoulder. The pain was such that he was unable to proceed down or climb back up. A visual inspection of the men’s position was made and it was determined that the rescue helicopter was the best option. As the helicopter would only extract the injured climber, SES members Graeme and Tim commenced climbing the east face to assist the second climber who had indicated that he could not proceed on his own. The AGL Rescue Unit arrived at 12.20pm and lowered a paramedic. The injured climber was winched clear at 12.50pm and the helicopter took him to Nambour Hospital. Graeme and Tim reached the other climber at 1.30pm and assisted him up over the top and then down to the western car park arriving at approximately 3.00pm. Group Leader Robert Barry stated that had the AGL Rescue Helicopter not been available, it would have been a considerable effort for the members to carry all the necessary equipment up the western slope and set up hauling ropes and equipment to extract the injured climber. He thanked the team of Graeme, Tim, Lou, Dave, Amy and Brett for their efforts.

Catch cancer before it catches you Did you know that bowel cancer is Australia’s number one internal cancer, killing well over 4,000 Australian men and women every year? But it is a disease that is 90 per cent curable if it is caught early. The prevalence and severity of bowel cancer is due to the fact that there are usually no symptoms in the early stages of the disease when polyps in the largest bowel, the colon, are small. With no obvious symptoms a polyp is given the chance to develop cancer which may spread to other vital organs completely undetected. Not all polyps are cancerous. However, if detected early they can be removed and this significantly reduces the possibility of bowel cancer developing. The Rotary Bowelscan Program is an initiative of over 300 Rotary Clubs across Australia and aims to raise awareness of the disease and to
encourage people to get into the habit of testing themselves preferably on an annual basis. The program will run locally from May 1 - 31. The Rotary Bowelscan test kits are inexpensive, $8.00 each, and are easy to use. Kits are checked by accredited pathologists Sullivan Nicolaides, and results are provided within a short period of time. Last year, the program detected 39 people in the Sunshine Coast and North Brisbane areas needing to see their GP’s with a view to taking vital follow up action. A small number of these people were found to have developed cancer, the youngest being only 39 years of age. For more information call 1300 779 694. The Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains is again conducting this program and kits are available for sale from Beerwah Soul Pattinson Chemist, the Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy, and Glasshouse Auscare Pharmacy.

Living Well Music Today
Hinterland Relay for Life
With our regular columnist, local musician Dr Michael Whiticker
Tips for setting up and maintaining your stereo system Here are a few tips that I’ve been able to offer friends in the last couple of months. I share them here as they might be useful for you as well. Lift your speakers off the floor. Unless they are actually designed to stand on the floor they will sound muddy. Place your speakers on stands or if necessary on tables. The ideal height is with the tweeters (the small speakers that reproduce the high frequencies) in line with your ears when in your typical listening position, be that sitting on your sofa or standing! Dust is your enemy. It gets into gear and clogs things up and causes overheating. Vacuum all around your sound gear, especially over those air inlets and around the back of your amplifier. Wipe your amplifiers, DVD players, speakers etc with a soft (slightly) damp cloth and don’t ever cover the aeration vents on your equipment.
When removing leads from sockets don’t pull them by the cable. Hold them by the plug and pull gently. In the case of phono or RCA plugs or jacks (those that plug into the back of most DVD players), generally you will need to twist the plug as you pull it. Only if necessary wiggle it from side to side as you pull. Never plug anything other than a speaker into the output of a power amp. A ‘speaker out’ connection carries a very strong signal that can cause damage to other components. However if an output is marked ‘line out’ or ‘record out’ it will safely send signal to a recorder or another amplifier input. A final tip. All speakers sound different and put out different volume levels. The only way to have four speakers sound the same is to buy four of the same make and model. Do have a creative musical month! Michael

Call for volunteers – Red Shield Appeal The Salvation Army is calling for volunteer collectors to help with the Sunshine Coast Red Shield Appeal doorknock on the weekend of May 19 - 20. The Salvation Army Sunshine Coast needs to reach a doorknock goal of $750,000 to maintain services in the year ahead. The national target for the overall Red Shield Appeal, which includes a business appeal and direct mail campaign, is $81.5 million. Maroochydore Salvation Army Officer, Lieutenant Ashley Barkmeyer said the Red Shield Appeal was vital in enabling them to continue their frontline services. “The clients we see are some of society’s most vulnerable people and are coming to us with increasingly complex needs, particularly with financial strain from housing affordability and the increased cost of living. “We are also seeing more clients than ever before with high levels of stress, anxiety and depression. More worrying is that the prevalence of people presenting at our services who are exhibiting suicidal tendencies is increasing.
“However, The Salvation Army is uniquely positioned to be able to meet people’s needs on many fronts – we help people find freedom from financial stress, emotional turmoil, loneliness, homelessness, addiction and with so many other issues." “More than ever, we need the support of the Sunshine Coast community to help fund our social programs,” said Lieutenant Ashley Barkmeyer. To volunteer simply call 13 SALVOS (13 72 58) local call cost - or visit salvos.org.au To give to the Red Shield Appeal, please call 13 SALVOS, visit salvos.org.au, donate at any Westpac branch, or post your cheque to PO Box 1771 Sunshine Plaza Maroochydore 4558.

Jeweller’s top tips for looking after your jewellery Don’t do any heavy duty work, like gardening, while wearing jewellery. This will place a lot of wear on it. Have your jewellery inspected regularly to prevent stones from falling out because of worn claws. Flair offers free inspection of your jewellery. Our jeweller will show you under a microscope where your jewellery is worn, so you don’t have to just take our word for it. Remember, prevention is cheaper than replacement. You should also have your jewellery valued for insurance purposes. Flair offers a service called Jewelsure, where your jewellery is valued and logged on a secure website that only you have access to. The great advantage of Jewelsure is that the value of your jewellery is adjusted every month. This means you will never have to have another valuation done! Did you know that Flair offers free polishing (seven items per person), every Thursday?

Letters to the Editor
ANZAC Day 2012
Letters are printed at the discretion of the editor, Lea Parkes and her policy is to include letters which focus on issues and are not about personally attacking other people. For a letter to be considered for printing it must be accompanied by the name, address and phone number of the sender. Anonymous letters will not be printed. Preference is given to letters under 300 words. Letters may be edited to make them more readable, but the meaning will not be changed. Regular correspondents will be limited to alternate issues to give everyone a chance to have their say. Letters must meet the Friday 12.00noon deadline. Views expressed in the 'You said it' page are those of the writer - and not this publication. Please send your letters to letters@gcnews.com.au or fax to 5438 7446.
ANZAC Day is always such a special day - one that encourages us to remember and pay tribute to our history. Each ANZAC Day I am reminded how lucky we are to call Australia home, particularly those of us lucky enough to live in Queensland. ANZAC Day tends to be one of the busiest on my calendar as I attempt to get to as many services as I can within the Glass House electorate. This year I attended ceremonies different to those last year which included the Palmwoods dawn service, Mt Mee sunrise service, Glasshouse Country RSL march, ending at the Maleny RSL community service. Well done to each and every person that was involved in the organisation of these events many are volunteers who go above and beyond the call of duty.
Online presence valuable
I’m very impressed with the Glasshouse Country News being available on line. This morning I needed the phone number of a local business whilst travelling to work. I called into two shops to see if they had the paper but both had run out. I was able to get the number by going on line and browsing the latest edition – a plus for the business and for me. Getting a wireless broadband connection in GHM was an issue, but that’s a different story. Thank you to the people who organised the forum in GHM to hear from all the candidates campaigning to be the next local councillor. The electorate should treat this selection like a job interview – looking for the most qualified and experienced candidate who has passion and drive and knows how to get the desired outcome. Good luck to all the candidates, you have been working hard over the past couple of months. Jane Connelly
What is Rotary’s position?
I was under the opinion that Rotary was non-political, so why did Bob McLean use his Rotary shirt in all his campaign posters and such? It does not say much for the Rotary club of Glasshouse Country, or is it a lie that Rotary is non-political? Kay Farrell Glass House Mountains

100 Day Plan With the election now behind us and the new cabinet sworn in and ready to get to work, one of our main priorities will be to oversee the implementation of the LNP's 100 day action plan. For starters, during our first 30 days, we have started the process of regulating to freeze family car registration - something Queenslanders have been crying out for. We all know cost of living pressures are a big concern for families so this is just one way we are helping to ease the strain on the family budget. This is also in addition to removing the stamp duty on the family home of up to $7,000, reintroducing weekly fares for commuters and also lowering the standard domestic electricity tariff within the first 100 days. On a larger scale, the 100 day action plan also incorporates drafting many changes to legislation including reducing real estate red tape, identifying the first 150 classes to be funded for more hours for Prep teacher aides and start the process to amalgamate bulk water entities as part of the Four Point Action Plan to Reduce Water Prices. If you would like to read more about this plan visit www.candoqld.com. au. Don't forget to check in with my website www.andrewpowell.com. au to keep up to date with things happening in the new Government and anything in and around the Glass House electorate.
From Mark McArdle State member for Caloundra. Phone: 5491 2780 Firstly, can I say I’m very honoured to be re-elected as your Member for Caloundra. I was first elected in 2004 and have seen many changes in the electorate since. I can assure you that I will continue to work very hard to represent all residents, and certainly encourage open feedback to my office. Last Wednesday marked one of the country’s most important and significant occasions – ANZAC Day. I was privileged to be able to share the day with both the Beerwah and Caloundra RSL’s and attend their respective ceremonies. While Australia and New Zealand have a friendly rivalry on the sporting front, these two countries have a historic bond that dates back to the anniversary of their first major military action during World War I, when the ANZAC’s landed on Gallipoli on April 25, 1915 and were met with strong opposition from the Turkish defenders. Sadly, more than 8,000 Australians died during the battle, but one thing that remained was the pride of the ANZAC fighting spirit and a strong sense of mateship. The ANZAC spirit was well and truly alive and remembered here on the Sunshine Coast last week, and one that we should never forget. On May 8 the winner of the Keep Australia Beautiful Tidy Towns Awards of Australia will be announced. Some of you may be aware that Caloundra is a finalist in this award, having collected the State crown last year. The exposure has certainly showcased the town’s natural beauty and that of surrounding townships. Best of luck to Caloundra, you’re already a winner. www.gcnews.com.au
Home and Property Guide Is a window of opportunity open to property investors? Low interest rates, below par property prices and a glut of available stock are promising signs for savvy property investors, according to Australia’s largest independently-operated mortgage broker, Mortgage Choice. Already this year the property market has seen an increase in investor activity as many hone in on the opportunities available. The latest ABS housing finance figures show that the value of investment housing loans rose by 4.4 per cent in February 2012 to $6.9 billion, seasonally adjusted. This is a 6.6 per cent increase on the same month last year and is noticeably above the yearly average of $6.6 billion. Mortgage Choice spokesperson, Belinda Williamson said investors who have their finances in order, and who have conducted thorough research, may find windows of opportunity in today’s property market. “The latest figures from RP Data show that in January there were over 287,000 residential properties for sale in Australia, which is approximately 30 per cent higher than the same time last year. The glut of available properties in some states could provide investors with prime pickings, particularly if prices have also fallen in the region. According to the same research, property values fell over the three months to December 2011 in all capital cities except Sydney and Hobart, which moderately rose by 0.7 per cent and 1 per cent respectively. “Other encouraging signs for investors include relatively low interest rates, and in some areas, rental price growth and low rental vacancy rates. The latter is influenced by Australia’s housing undersupply issue. The latest ABS building approval figures show a fall in February, the fifteenth consecutive monthly drop. With fewer new properties being built, vacancy rates should remain tight and we are bound to see further pick up in rental price growth. Already, RP Data’s latest research shows capital city rents over the past 12 months have increased by 7.1 per cent for houses and 4.2 per cent for units. “Rental yields are also showing positive signs of improvement. Gross rental yields over the 12 months to December 2011 have improved, with
yields for houses rising to 4.4 per cent from 4.0 per cent and units increasing to 5.1 per cent from 4.7 per cent. “When choosing what type of property and where to buy, it is a good strategy to invest in a dwelling that is well located, highly regarded by renters and priced appropriately. Ideally, the property will be in close proximity to amenities, shops, public transport and have appealing features, such as off-street parking. “Of course, there are tax and legal ramifications associated with property investment, and it is always a good idea to get professional advice from an accountant or solicitor before settling on a strategy. “Prospective investors should be aware that lenders generally limit their loan to value ratios - LVRs - to 90 per cent of the purchase price. However, some lenders may consider a higher LVR, depending on the individual borrower so it pays to shop around. Keep in mind, when the LVR is 85 per cent or above, a genuine savings deposit of 10 per cent is required, which can be savings held over a period of at least three months, equity in an existing property, etc. Borrowers should investigate the finance side of any purchase early on to ensure they satisfy their chosen lender’s requirements.” Mortgage Choice provides the following five tips for potential property investors: 1. Research your property options – Conduct thorough research before settling a property investment strategy. If you are not confident in your ability to find a suitable investment property, seek assistance from a buyers’ agent. Before committing to any property purchase, it is a good idea to discuss your plans with an accountant and/or financial planner. 2. Pre-approve your property loan – Talk to a professional mortgage broker about getting a home loan pre-approval. This gives you an understanding of what you can comfortably repay and afford to buy. It allows you to shop with greater confidence, whether you are bidding at auction or negotiating a purchase. 3. Look into LMI – If you decide to access the equity in your existing property to purchase
another and you borrow more than 80 per cent of the property’s value, you will probably need to pay lenders’ mortgage insurance (LMI). This can be quite costly, ranging from hundreds of dollars to tens of thousands. A professional mortgage broker can provide up-to-the-minute information. 4. Choose a suitable loan structure – There are a number of factors to consider when deciding on the type of loan structure to suit your investment strategy. This could include how to tie in any existing loans, what loan features will help you achieve your financial goals (e.g. offset account, redraw facility), which loan suit your needs (i.e. interest only loan or principal and interest, fixing part or all of your loan, etc). 5. Build a financial buffer – Be prepared for the longer-term peaks and troughs of the property cycle by building a financial buffer of at least 1-2 per cent to cope with additional expenses including lenders’ interest rate rises, property maintenance and repairs, and/or the loss of a tenant or rent arrears. Remember that regular income from any investment is not a certainty and capital gains don’t appear overnight.

TIPS FOR BORROWERS PLANNING TO START A FAMILY Having a baby is one of the most wonderful experiences in life, but it can also be stressful. You don’t want to be worrying about how you’re going to juggle your finances once your baby arrives. The time to start planning is when you decide to become, or find out that you’re going to be, a parent. Plan early and seek advice While many couples juggle mortgage repayments with bringing up a baby on a single income, a little planning goes a long way to help new parents ease the financial load. There are a few options on offer by lenders, but as well as seeking advice from your mortgage broker, talking to
www.gcnews.com.au
friends and family about their experiences is also a good place to start. Make extra loan repayments Consider payment honeymoons – or holidays – which are available to some borrowers depending on the type of loan you have. For those who do have that option, access generally depends on the amount of prepaid funds you’ve accrued. For example, if you’ve been paying extra into your loan for a while and now have $20,000 in your redraw facility, it’s these funds that will cover your payment holiday. But, once these funds have been used up, the payment honeymoon is over.
Take advantage of government assistance and all leave types Get to know all government family assistance payments that are available to you and take advantage of all types of leave offered by your employer, such as holiday, maternity and longservice leave. Making decisions about how you’ll use the leave means you can put a plan in place early. Consider switching to interestonly repayments While some people may be able to switch to interest-only repayments, it’s important to remember that lenders still expect the loan to be paid out in (usually) 30 years.
So if you’re not paying any principal for a while, this will impact on your minimum repayments when you revert back to principal and interest. Think about to fix or not Things that might affect your decision include the length of time you’ll be on one income, the income amount, and whether or not you have ongoing additional expenses, such as a car loan – Call Teresa Harrison today. but be cautious, consider your 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098 personal circumstances before www.smartline.com.au/tharrison making a decision. Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Phil Wyllie Glasshouse Country Uniting Church Some while ago I heard about an overweight office worker who decided to go on a diet. One of his resolutions was to take a different route to work so he would not have to pass by his favourite bakery each day. So everybody was surprised when he shuffled into work one day carrying a huge coffee cake oozing with icing and dried fruit. ‘But this is different’, he explained, ‘by mistake I went by the bakery this morning and this was right in the window looking at me.’ So I said to the Lord, ‘Lord, if you want me to buy that coffee cake, let there be a parking space right in front of the bakery. And sure enough’ he said, ‘the eighth time around the block there it was.’ What do you think was this man’s problem? He certainly lacked commitment to his diet. He wasn’t single-minded about it. But the thing that he lacked most was staying power. The man failed to exercise perseverance. This is the commitment to stick at whatever God gives you to do until you get to the end of it. Everywhere these days you hear about people who are giving up or dropping out. They are changing courses or careers too soon, giving up on their marriages and even severing friendships before they have really given them a go. Too few have learned the discipline of perseverance; consequently they never see God turning their difficult situations into great victories. They give up or bail out too soon. They never learn that God’s will usually is to help us through our difficulty rather than to help us out of it. 24

MAY 2 2012
There never was a great marriage, a great scholastic achievement, or a great project completed that at some time in the past did not have troubles or problems. It is perseverance that makes something great out of small things of our lives. As we engage with the activities of our lives with all of its challenges and hassles, let us consider what it is that makes great achievements out of our small beginnings. Have you heard about Noah and the Ark? He led all the animals two by two into the Ark. If you know about the Ark you may remember that there were lions and giraffes, kangaroos and koalas and many other animals. But have you ever considered the humble snail? It was perseverance that got that pair of snails on board the Ark to become the pests they are in our back yards.

A to Z of Trades and Services Sunshine Coast Council encourages the installation of fully compliant safety barriers around swimming areas as they make pools and spas safe and fun for everyone. Manager Building Services, Steven Tucker said having the right safety barriers around pools and spas is essential for saving lives and preventing injuries. He said under current State Government legislation, if you are selling or renting a property with a swimming pool you must attain a pool safety certificate from a licensed pool safety inspector. “Pool owners not selling or leasing a property have until 30 November 2015 to comply with the new pool fence safety standard.
“This standard applies to pools associated with houses and also applies to units, hotels, motels, backpacker hostels, caravan parks and mobile van parks." Safe swimming areas must have; • A safety barrier with an effective height of 1200mm from top to bottom • Gates that open away from the pool enclosure and self close and self latch from any stationary position • No climbable objects outside the barrier within the quadrant radius of 1200mm measured out and down of the barrier. This includes tree limbs, outdoor furniture, pot plants or anything that can be climbed over to access the swimming enclosure • Windows that open into the swimming enclosure with a sill height of less than 1200mm require permanently

fixed security screens • A clearly displayed resuscitation sign within the pool enclosure that includes the emergency number 000 and instructions for resuscitating infants, children and adults. Pool owners can arrange for a licensed pool safety inspector to inspect their swimming pool enclosure to determine whether or not they comply with the pool safety standard. If a nonconformity notice is issued, it means the swimming area doesn’t meet legislative requirements, and it should state how the pool barrier doesn't comply and what needs to be done to make it comply. To find out more about what you need to do to make sure your pool or spa comply, ring council on 5475 7272 or check council’s website.

Preparing for the cooler months We have been seeing some absolutely glorious weather and my veggie patch has been thriving as a result! Big green luscious leaves of silverbeet, strong succulent brassicas and crisp lettuce leaves … and yes, I have just described a first-class banquet for caterpillars and grasshoppers. As per usual, it seems the pests are out for their big feast before the cool weather sets in. I do know however from previous years, that this should be a short lived attack and in no time at all we will be seeing some great cool winter growing weather with minimal pest problems. To deal with these incessant caterpillars in the meantime, I continue to use organically certified Dipel. The biggest problem I have with this, is timing the applications effectively so that it is not washed off by a chance shower. So that it can remain on long enough to have the desired impact on my healthy caterpillar population. Another plant that has been decimated by caterpillars in my patch is my ‘Lots of Lemons’ tree. It would seem that the Orchid Swallowtail butterfly (Papilio aegeus) has a particular preference for this tree in my yard and it now resembles a leafless Christmas tree with lemon baubles.

MAY 2 2012
My mandarin and orange trees stand loaded with citrus and a mass of glossy leaves to remind me of what my lemon tree should look like. Whilst Dipel would be effective on the young caterpillars, I plan to deal with these rather large and interesting caterpillars with an even more natural pest control – my kids! My son in particular loves to collect them to see their long red osmeterium poke out from behind their head as they release an off putting pungent smell. He then puts them in containers in hope of getting them to hatch into butterflies … the fact that he forgets them after 20 minutes has been found to be a very effective pest control. On the maintenance front, I will be mulching around my veggies well to keep the soil warm, free from weeds and stop the soil drying out in the cool winds to come. Throughout winter I’ll be following some general tips I have considered to be the keys to a successful brassica harvest. Tips for success with brassicas • Well prepared garden bed with plenty of manure and compost, and pH adjusted to 6.5 – 7.5. • Seedlings given fortnightly liquid feeds with a combination of fish emulsion and seaweed
Orchid Swallowtail catterpillar solution (supplies quick nutrients and builds pest resistance). • Mound around base of plants with soil/mulch mix to aid stability and increase root coverage and nutrient access. • Keep the whole garden bed well mulched to protect shallow roots and encourage beneficial soil organisms. • At the very first sign of flowering (cauliflower and broccoli) and mid-way through the growing of all other brassicas, apply a fertiliser rich in nitrogen and potassium. I use my chook manure straight from the pen or a chook manure based fertiliser such as Dynamic Lifter or Kaytec. • After harvesting the main head of broccoli by cutting on a diagonal, give the whole plant a generous liquid feed. I hope everyone enjoys these beautiful days out in the patch. I personally am greatly anticipating the harvest of my soon to be ready Chinese Water Chestnuts in the coming months … even wondering if I can harvest them before the tops die off … they are not safe in my patch! Until next month in Get Up and Grow…

Auskick at Landsborough
Mooloolah Soccer Club
Glasshouse Country Bowls Club
Glasshouse Hinterland’s Club Auskick will be commencing this Thursday, May 3 from 4.00pm untill 5.00pm at our grounds at Tunnel Ridge Road, Landsborough. Club Auskick is for the age groups of five and six years old and those who are older but not wanting to play club football. Auskick is for both boys and girls and is run over a 10-12 week period. NAB AFL Auskick is the Australian Football League’s key introductory program for primary school aged children and their families. Queensland Auskick Co-ordinator Stuart Seager said that Auskick is all about teaching boys and girls the skills of AFL in a friendly, safe environment. “The rules are modified to give children a really gentle introduction to AFL,” said Mr Seager. “Parents are encouraged to join in all the activities and the kids’ faces just light up when they see mum or dad having a kick or taking a mark.” If you require further information please contact Kelly on 0421 2092 79 or simply rock up on Thursday.
Unfortunately this weekend Mooloolah Soccer Clubs fixtures across the Coast were washed out due to the heavy rainfall. On a more exciting note, Mooloolah Soccer Clubs website went live this week so all our club members and fans can follow the club and teams progress on line. Each week we will be updating the latest results as well as featuring things going on around the club. The website is a one stop shop for information on Mooloolah Soccer Club and we encourage all to jump on and check out our new site. www. mooloolahsoccerclub.com. Fingers crossed for no rain next weekend so the kids can get out and play.

Thursday saw a huge field of 149 players compete in our Annual Open Day which was sponsored by Sean and Jen Kelly. The sun shone and the course was a picture, with players coming from as far as Wynnum, Warwick and Surfers Paradise, as well as many representing clubs in the local area. We had some great scores with our own Hollie Sinclair winning the 1st Division Gross with a wonderful 73 off the stick. Lyn Steele took out Division 3. Sharon Phillips had a great day bringing home the Div 2 nett as well as the Senior trophy. Division 3 Nett went to Barb McIntosh. Even with such a large field and a shotgun start, there were very few hold ups and with a beautiful meal waiting for us after the game, the whole day was a great success. The only glitch was a camera malfunction, so there are no photos of the day, however we do have a snap of our happy winners from last week when Barb Whitfield and Sue Williamson
Beerwah Golfers - Sue, Mavis, Barb and Anne. just about scooped the pool in our Chapman Foursomes held on April the 19. Barb and Sue not only won the day, they took out 3 NTP’s on 2, 5 and 18. Runners up on the day were Joan Swyny and Jackie Collinson. Fay Raven and her partner R. Kendrick got the NTP on the 16th. The Foursomes was sponsored by Mavis Brimelow and Anne Stockwell. Let’s hope the rain stays away for next week. Until then, stay safe and good golfing.

An Arab Sheik was admitted to St Vincent’s Hospital for heart surgery, but prior to the surgery, the doctors needed to store his blood in case the need arose. As the Arab gentleman had a rare type of blood, it couldn't be found locally, so the call went out to all the states. Finally a Scot was located who had a similar blood type. The Scot willingly donated his blood for the Arab. After the surgery, the Arab sent the Scotsman as appreciation for giving his blood, a new BMW, diamonds and US dollars. A couple of days later, once again, the Arab had to go through a corrective surgery. His doctor telephoned the
Scotsman who was more than happy to donate his blood again. After the second surgery, the Arab sent the Scotsman a thank-you card and a jar of candies. The Scotsman was shocked that the Arab this time did not reciprocate his kind gesture as he had anticipated. He phoned the Arab and asked him why. "I thought you would be generous again, that you would give me a BMW, diamonds and money, but you only gave me a thank-you card and a jar of candies." To this the Arab replied, "aye, but I now have Scottish blood in me veins." Submitted by Kim Hansen, Landsborough
