CABOOLTURE
Hi Everyone
O
ur front page story this week is about a four hectare block of land that Council has purchased to turn into a park. When Council phoned a week in advance to make sure we could attend a media event in Glass House Mountains – I was a bit surprised and a little intrigued as they were very vague about the details and important things like where it would be, who would be attending and what it was all about. Generally I am one of those people who get suspicious about vagueness; some would say it’s frustration that I’m not being let in on the ‘secret’ – strangely enough I was so

busy I forgot all about it until the day before. I then became very interested when a morning media alert said that the Mayor was coming to Glass House Mountains to make an announcement and that it would be on the vacant land at the bottom of Gardener Road, just down from our office. It’s not often that I get to leisurely amble to a media event. While it may be sometime until there is infrastructure put into the park, and it is no Kings Beach, at least we can grab a rug or some camping chairs and a picnic lunch sit beside the water and enjoy the serenity.

Beerwah Village shopping centre construction to start By Greg Brown
The ground works to start the redevelopment of the Beerwah Village shopping centre are imminent, with the project manager, Gary McGilvery from MCG and Associates, hoping the construction will commence in mid-October. “Pending the Sunshine Coast Council’s approval of the current operational works permit, which we are expecting any day, we are planning to start the rejuvenation of the Wimberley’s and Supa IGA sites sometime in mid-October,” Gary said. “And all things considered, we expect to be at an opening stage in 11 months from the commencement.” The project will see the buildings and the house from the corner of Peachester Road up to (but not including) the Beerwah Paint Place shop torn down to make way for a modern shopping complex which will include an expanded Supa IGA, Target Country, and new specialty stores. A leasing agent for the complex, Fred Landes from Landes and Associates, said that on completion, the expanded centre will incorporate 11,000sqm of floor space and will be anchored by the existing Woolworths Supermarket and Caltex/Woolworths petrol station, plus a full line
IGA Supermarket, Target and around 41 specialty retailers with 448 car parks. “Existing Glasshouse Country businesses and new prospective businesses are welcome to look at what retail leasing opportunities are available,’’ Fred said. “Anyone interested in becoming part of this exciting and vibrant retail precinct can contact me on 0414 410 770 or at elands@bigpond.com for more details of the available options.” Sunshine Coast Council Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said expansion of the Village Fair Shopping Centre in Beerwah demonstrates the strength of business confidence and growth in the region. “The additional shopping opportunities provided by the expansion will be great for Beerwah locals and it strengthens the tenancy mix and experience for shoppers from around the district,” Rick said. “It’s great timing for the town, as council’s $5million ‘Beerwah Place + project’ has also started and both projects will deliver a transformed look and feel for the town that both locals and visitors will enjoy.” Glasshouse Country News will bring you more details on the development as it progresses.

The four hectare parcel of land situated between Gardner Street, Page Street, Smerdon Way and Dana Close was proudly owned and maintained for over forty years by locals Gloria and Gordon Lawrie. In May 2012, Glasshouse Country News reported on concerns that the Lawries were having with people using the pathway across the private land as a shortcut between Dana Close / Smerdon Way, across to Coonowrin Road near Club Glass House. The path had become unstable and potentially dangerous, with the Lawries having no choice but to fence off the path in an attempt to prevent public liability issues. At that time, Gloria said she and her husband hoped to meet with the new incoming Division 1 candidate to discuss options for the area in coming weeks. Those discussions with Rick Baberowski, the subsequently elected Division 1 Councillor, must have proved fruitful for all concerned, as the announcement of the acquisition was passionately made by Mayor Jamieson. “The strategic land purchase will cater for the long-term active recreation needs of this growing community,” he said. “Having access to a network of parkland areas is a fundamental part of our Sunshine Coast lifestyle. “Families will have plenty of open space to throw a frisbee and kick soccer balls – there’s also space for people to have leisurely picnics or enjoy bird watching.”
The reserve, which will be classified as a District Park, is a combination of open space, lakes and lagoons, and some bushland. District Parks have more and better facilities than normal local parks – a local example is Skippy Park. The purchasing funds came from a combination of the open space and social land program, as well as the Environment Levy fund. Councillor Rick Baberowski is very excited about the future of the park. “It’s a unique property, in an ideal location that adjoins two nature reserves, and I am positively delighted that the opportunity to purchase it on behalf of the community has been realised,” Rick said. “Gordon and Gloria have owned the property for over forty years and in that time they have established a nature reserve with two lakes and habitat for wildlife. “The Lawries also set about the construction of a concrete path as a short-cut into town and opened it up for the community to use, so that locals could walk through the property, enjoy the scenery and access the centre of town. “Council recognised the incredible social and environmental values for the whole community and we acted quickly to secure this site for the benefit of current and future generations.” But as the purchase was unplanned, the park has no allocated funding and will require a master plan to be produced. So it is unlikely that major infrastructure or facilities will be developed for a number of years. Gordon and Gloria Lawrie are grateful for the efforts that Cr Baberowski and the Council staff have made over the last 18 months, and are looking forward to seeing Council progress the area for the benefit of the whole community (see their letter on page 20). Watch out for our story on the history of the block of land in the next edition.

Helicopter hovers in the dark Residents of Glass House Mountains are used to hearing the sound of the emergency helicopter when it is involved in rescues off the mountains. However, many locals were left wondering what caused a helicopter to hover low above the township around 10.00pm last Wednesday night. There was a single vehicle accident on the corner of Bowen and Crittenden Roads at Glass House
Mountains, at about 8.20pm and a rescue helicopter was brought in to airlift the driver to Brisbane. After much hovering over the township, the emergency helicopter landed on the fields at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club where they met an ambulance that had transported the victim from the accident scene. www.gcnews.com.au
Beerwah buzzing with activity By Greg Brown
The transformational $4.5million streetscaping project along Simpson Street in Beerwah, which commenced in early August, is well underway.
“We’d like to thank the traders and community members for their understanding and cooperation during this time.” The Simpson Street businesses are keen to remind the locals how important it is to support them during this construction phase. Krishna Kant Pathak from Bombay Bliss said he is obviously really looking forward to the project being finished. “We’ve had some extra challenges with some of the work having to be done after hours, which is our peak busy time,” he said. “We hope that our regular customers will understand and still make the effort to come into
The fantastic recent weather has meant that the work crews have set a cracking pace, and are on track with the early project plans and timeframes. Although the works may be causing some minor inconvenience to local traders and shoppers alike, the final outcomes will be worth the wait. Beerwah is set to be revitalised by the major changes to Simpson Street and the soon to commence works on the Wimberley’s Mitre 10 and Supa IGA sites as part of the ‘Beerwah Village’ shopping centre redevelopment. The result will be the growth of a “modern country town”, launching Beerwah firmly along the path to realising its potential as the regional activity centre the community has been long awaiting. To date, the project has seen some major milestones reached. Council’s Project Coordinator Adam Stewart gives examples such as relocating the water main along Simpson Street and expanding the carpark across from Aldi. “The works are progressing as per the plan and we have started works in the next sections along Simpson Street (zones 3 and 4), which will include stormwater works and kerb and channelling,’’ he said.

the shop despite some temporary disruptions.” Sunshine Coast Council Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski acknowledges that the start of the streetscaping work has made it harder to get a car park right out the front of your favourite shops at the moment. “But don’t let an extra 30 metres of walking deter you from shopping locally – local businesses need your support,” he said. “What is really pleasing to me is that when a problem arises, the response from the Council Project Team has been highly praised by the businesses affected. “Projects like this do have impacts, but if the people affected experience understanding, care and attention in the response, they will often accept that despite every effort to help there may still be some unavoidable pain.”

Local koalas to be well fed New church at Mooloolah Valley Some of the most vulnerable koalas in Glass House electorate will be well fed into the future thanks to the latest round of State Government funding. Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection and Member for Glass House Andrew Powell said round two of the grants scheme would help practical environmental projects get off the ground. “A total of $7,303 for the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network will go towards an important Koala Food Tree project,” Mr Powell said. “The project will establish a koala food tree plantation to provide ongoing supply of fodder for koalas in the care of registered carers. “Koala carers can find it difficult to obtain food fodder when local weather events damage or destroy other fodder resources, so this project will work towards preventing this. “Barung Landcare Association has been allocated $18,045 to work with smaller urban and peri-urban landholders in the Barung region on weed control and revegetation activities. “This project will develop and enhance habitat connectivity across the region and preserve biodiversity. “The organisation will host activity days to educate locals about cleaning up weed species, planting trees, maintaining previous revegetation efforts and preparing sites for future work.” Applications for round three of the grants will be called in 2014. Andrew Powell congratulates Cliff Schnick from GMAN

‘Church on the Rise’ is now going to be one church in three locations. From its initial location in Beerwah, the church community has started another campus in Maleny and now it is launching a new church in the Mooloolah Valley community. Its expression is a desire to ‘Love God, Love People and Love Life’ in and around its local community. Pastors Mark and Linda Whysall have been hosting monthly services at Mooloolah Valley Hall for the past six months, but now feel it’s time to go weekly. Mark and Linda have lived in the area for 12 years, and work locally. Their three children have attended local schools and they have invested many years into the community through work with young people and children, as they truly value people and families. “Church on the Rise Mooloolah Valley will be a place for you to make new friends and be a part of a local community church," said Mark. “There will also be a Kidzone program available for primary school children to help teach Christian values”. “People who are interested in finding out more about what Christians believe can do that in a local setting.” Mark and Linda have always said that their events are about fun, food and friendship while building people’s faith. Services begin weekly on Sunday, October 6 at 10.00am in the Mooloolah Public Hall. All are welcome. For any questions or enquiries please call Mark on 0437 941 607. Pastors Mark and Linda Whysall

Katrina shows that Beerwah has talent Katrina Killick, a local Beerwah resident, performed in the 32nd Redcliffe Country Music Festival recently.
Katrina was pleased to take out the Senior Female award and received second place in the Senior Gospel section. Winning the Redcliffe award means that Katrina will now be invited to enter the Queensland Champion of Champions competition which is held in November. Katrina has sung in many awards since she was a child, including the New Zealand Entertainer of the Year. Katrina and her sister, Bernie, sang as a duo, but since Katrina moved to Australia eight years ago she now performs as a solo act. This weekend, Katrina was invited to perform for a Cystic Fibrosis fundraiser, and she gladly gave her time for such a worthy cause.
Sad loss to community
As the news of the passing of long time Glass House Mountains local Bernie O’Mara spread through the community last week it brought sadness to all those who knew him. A celebration of his life was held at the Caloundra Gregson and Weight Chapel at 1.00pm on Monday this week. Bernie was a regular visitor to the GCNews office, as a proud grandparent passing on reports of his grand-daughter Ellen Fullerton’s swimming results and also with all sorts of interesting historical snippets about Glass House Mountains for inclusion in the paper. Here at GCNews it is people like Bernie who love to share stories that makes our jobs easier and enjoyable and we fondly remember him for his enthusiasm. GCNews will include a Vale for Bernie in the next edition, October 9.

More than just a music festival The Glasshouse Festival that is being held at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club on Saturday, November 2 has been generating plenty of interest with the locals and, as it is a first time event - the club has been busy spreading the word about what a great day it will be. Sports Club Manager Kylie Cherry said when Festival Organiser Paul Holden put the concept for the festival together for a day/night event, he realised that it was just as important that there was plenty on offer for families during the day as well as a great musical lineup for the night. “We really want local families to be able to come along with the kids during the day and make sure they all enjoy themselves, that there is a great atmosphere that everyone feels comfortable, safe and relaxed,” Kylie said. “On the day there will be plenty of marquees with shade with seating for 600 – perfect for groups of families to grab a meal and a drink and kick back to the music.
The ‘Wow Balls’ look like plenty of fun
“Once you enter the festival site the entertainment is free – this includes jumping castles for all ages, (as well as one for the little ones), some very cool, free electric motorbike rides, plus a pool with ‘WOW’ Balls. There will also be roaming entertainment, including stilt walking, face painting, clowns and a Hula Hoop Troupe, plus a 16m projection screen with live feeds of all the action all day. “Kite Action and Sunshine Coast SUP centre will be offering free 30 minute Kite Making Workshops throughout the afternoon, but don’t worry; for those who prefer a little more action the Flair Riders Freestyle Tails Bike Show and the Xtreme Connect Wake Tramp Demos will be running throughout the day.
Making the trip up from Byron Bay, Juzzie Smith will be entertaining lunchtime crowds with his unique ‘one man band’ show
“I think people will be impressed with the quality of the food – it won’t be your usual fete / sideshow alley style Dagwood dogs and fairy floss, it will be restaurant quality meals with generous serving sizes from $5.00 for kids meals and up to $7.50 for adult.
“The music lineup during the day will be great – just a little more easy listening then the night time program.” Tickets are priced for the whole day: $50.00 for 18 plus, $30.00 for 12 to 17 years, and under 12 free (must be accompanied by an adult). Get your tickets from one of the many local venues featured on the posters, or call into the sports club, or head to oztix.com.au to purchase tickets online.

Sore neck and shoulders?
Are your sore neck and shoulders making life less enjoyable? Does sitting at the computer, driving, or even reading a book cause a burning discomfort in your shoulders that spreads up into the base of your skull? If so, you may be suffering from Spinal Subluxation and poor posture – 2 common problems that chiropractic care is very effective in relieving. Subluxation is the term chiropractors use to describe ‘dysfunctional’ vertebrae in the spine. This occurs when the spine loses normal motion and/or position, and can cause wear and tear on the discs, ligaments, muscles and other spinal tissues. Subluxation can also have an affect on the nerves exiting the spine – leading to even more issues of pain and poor health. Today’s lifestyle encourages us to fall into ‘forward head posture’ - where our head sits in front of our shoulders – rather than in line with the shoulders as it should. This forward posture has a significant impact on your health and your appearance and if left unaddressed, tends to get worse as you get older. Researchers agree that for every 2.5cm of forward head posture there is an equivalent increase of 4.5kg of stress on the neck. It’s no wonder poor posture is such a pain! Poor posture and Spinal Subluxation often result in back aches, neck pain, jaw pain, loss of lung capacity, gastrointestinal problems, pre-disposition to arm, shoulder and rotator cuff injuries and the list goes on. Fortunately, we can help! Call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today to find out if Spinal Subluxation is the cause of your discomfort. Accommodation needed
Caloundra Family History Research, a local not-for-profit group, urgently needs to find a new home. They are seeking help from the public and local businesses to find somewhere to to set up their research facility. They have a large collection of books and resources, so need a good-sized, secure area for their library, as well as space to set up four computer work stations. Access to a telephone line (for the computers) is needed, even if it is only a line into the building. Ideally the group would like a meeting area as part of, or adjacent to, the research area for their monthly meetings, seminars, etc. They are currently based in central Caloundra and would like to remain in that area, but all options will be considered. If anyone is able to help with their search, please contact June Blackburn 5493 2679 or Valerie Thornton 5437 3879.
Contributed by Morris House The next basic computer course at Morris House Neighbourhood Centre will commence on Tuesday October 8. This course is for beginners and we cater for all ages and skill levels. The course is eight x two hour lessons and all notes and computers are provided. As we have received a grant from Australia Post to help with course costs, we are now able to offer the course at a reduced cost. So, if you have been thinking of doing a course, now is the time to book, while we have funds available to help with costs. Call 5494 1258 for all bookings and enquiries, or e-mail ann@landsborough.com or call at Morris House between 9.30am and 1.00pm, Monday to Friday.

Cheaper Electricity
Geoff likes a bargain
If you missed out on the 44 cents Queensland Solar bonus scheme, don’t worry! If you did not register in time for the 44 cents, there is still about 30 cents available simply by using your own solar electricity and not using the grid electricity. If you have your own solar system you can, save 30 cents per kilo watt hour (approximately). Once you install a solar system you are receiving free electricity with a minimum pay-back time, the length of which depends on the size of the system installed. And free electricity is what we all want. So if you already have solar systems why not add more panels to your existing system and reap the benefit of seeing your bill reduced even further. Each individual panel you have on your roof will make you about $130.00 per year. If you purchase a Blue Sun, BYD or Sun Earth system, you will earn a minimum of $3,942 (approximately) for the life time of your panels (25 years). And this is if the price of electricity stays the same over the next 25 years – and if it doesn’t the amount of money you make just goes up and up.
Most of us like to feel we have purchased a bargain. Whenever Ian Hall’s younger brother Geoff would make a purchase, he would get two or three quotes and always chose the cheapest quote. He purchased his solar system from Australia’s largest solar retailer. Geoff thought it was a bargain and cheap too. And Ian agreed – it was cheap. But it was not a good buy as assessed by Ian, who has been installing and selling PV solar for 24 years. A couple of years after Geoff purchased his system he has major problems. The largest solar retailer in Australia folded and went broke. Geoff now has no warranty and no back up service; he has to pay for all replacements and repairs himself instead of calling upon his standard five year warranty terms and conditions. Give some thought to all these big companies who advertise on national TV. TV advertising costs big dollars; the salesman who follow-up earns big commissions and the price sounds “too good to be true”.
Business feature These advertising costs and sales commissions are a large part of what you pay, meaning that after these costs are taken out, it leaves very little to pay for the actual installed solar system you’ve purchased. So you end up with the solar equipment, solar panels and inverter that are very cheap to manufacture and so may not have the durability they require in our climate. We all know everything costs money. Your local 13004Solar electrician only sells quality products. So what began as a bargain for my younger brother Geoff, ended up costing him dearly – all because he went for a rockbottom cheap price rather than reasonably priced quality. In the end, if you buy cheap solar products – you’ll probably have to deal with the nasty consequences later. Geoff Hall

Lions Save Sight
Contributed by Bob Banner Lions International is a truly international organisation. Originally challenged by Helen Keller, a blind and deaf American woman, to become knights of the blind, Lions around the world still heed her challenge. Next month, the Lions organisation will celebrate Lions World Save Sight Day. This international event is held each year to recognise the importance of curing preventable blindness.Activities will include vision screening and eye health education, and any other vision related activity. During August, the Save Sight Advisory Committee met and awarded thirty two grants totaling US $7,475,345.00. This will enable Save Sight to work on eliminating trachoma in Ethiopia, Nali and Mali. It will provide diabetic retinopathy screenings in Brazil, as well as creating a low vision network in the United States and more. As a small club, the Beerwah Lions donate to these larger causes when they have funds left over from supporting local needs.

Operation Nighthawk Contributed by Grace Bannan, Unit Secretary Recently the Glasshouse Mountains Venturer Scouts Unit participated in the annual Operation Nighthawk event run by the Darling Downs region scouts. The event saw 1000 Scouts and 450 Venturers participating, coming from as far away as Roma, Maryborough and even from Casino in New South Wales.

An Ice Journey
Glasshouse Country View Club At our September luncheon at the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club, our guest speaker was Dave Morgan, author of ‘Ice Journey’. It was an interesting and somewhat sad story of his life and his battle with post traumatic stress disorder. Dave was a soldier who went to Vietnam and had to face many confronting issues when he returned to Australia. His journey to Antarctica with the Bureau of Meteorology helped him overcome some of his issues through the writing of this book. We wish Dave well in his future in writing, including another book about his life. We welcomed Fran Shepherd and Virginia Kennedy to our club as they received their membership badges. We hope they enjoy our outings and make new friendships along the way. As Melbourne Cup is just around the corner, if you are interested in going to our luncheon on November 5, please call Elaine on 5493 3935 for more details. View Clubs are a valued part of the Smith Family which is a national, independent children’s charity. The Smith Family is committed to helping disadvantaged Australian children by unlocking opportunities through education and support. Beryl Fletcher presents Dave Morgan with a Certificate of Appreciation
Nighthawk is an overnight hike every August covering about 15 kilometres. Throughout the night the Scouts and Venturers complete challenges based around things involved in scouting such as first aid, survival fire lighting, teamwork and construction. As well as scouting activities, there is also a drinks base in the middle of the course which is a highlight as the Venturers are tired and cold and are usually low on sleep. The Milo base provides them with a warm drink and some food in stomachs to help them get through the rest of the night with minimal complaint. Glasshouse Venturers are a small unit with only four members so linked up with the Dalby Venturer Unit who only had two members partaking in the event. The team placed well and all returned home content but extremely tired. If there is any interest to join the unit, please contact the Venturer leader Jeff Price, ‘Gonzo’ on 0418 490 721 or the group leader Scott Barton, ‘Wombat’ on 0407 020 076.

Beerwah RSL’s new Chef, Paul, joined the team last month and has included some new items on the menu for both lunch and dinner including a couple of gluten free options: chicken, bacon and mushroom risotto served on a bed of baby spinach and parmesan, and chicken scaloppini. Paul reckons that the battered barra burger on the lunch menu will be a winner, as will the grilled Atlantic salmon and the risotto. A Greek salad will also be popular in this hotter weather where diners are looking for something a little lighter. Now that the weather has warmed up they have also introduced a ‘Summer Sizzle’ Grill and Salad Bar on Friday night. It includes your choice of grilled beef, pork or chicken served with an Idaho potato plus an all-you-can-eat salad bar for only $24.95. Monthly Finance Money Guide Australian sharemarket hits record highs!
with Ross Wolstencroft But how can this be said when the All Ords Index is still about 1500 points lower than the pre-GFC high, you ask. Well, Craig James (Chief Economist of CommSec), argues that the best gauge to track the performance of the Australian sharemarket is the All Ordinaries Accumulation index (AOAI), as this measures total returns on shares – share prices plus dividends. We agree. On September 19, 2013 the AOAI hit a record high of 42,951 points, almost doubling since February 2009! What does this mean? James says that this was a red letter day for our sharemarket. “It is also a time when Australians can celebrate – because if you don’t hold shares directly, most likely you hold equities in your superannuation fund. The record high for sharemarket returns signify that the Global Financial Crisis is truly dead and buried” he said. He also made the following points: • In the depths of the GFC, the doomsters suggested the best course of action was to give up, sell all shares and put proceeds into cash. The more realistic recognised a buying opportunity. And in the space of just 4½ years, returns on Aussie shares have doubled. • Looking forward, the key point for investors is that it is no longer a case of monitoring share prices alone, rather total returns. And that is the case whether it is residential property, shares or any other assets. Interest rates and inflation are at historically low levels, but despite a tough trading environment, companies
have become more efficient and are making money, meaning that they are still paying dividends. • The Australian economy looks poised to pick up pace over the next 6-12 months. The election is out of the road, interest rates are low, the Chinese economy is strengthening, and the US Federal Reserve is in no rush to trim stimulus. • CommSec has lifted its targets for the All Ordinaries & ASX 200 indexes. Total returns on shares are tipped to lift around 20 per cent in 2013/14 after 20.7 per cent growth in 2012/13. For several years we have encouraged investors to focus on income from assets, not just the growth of the asset value. The above commentary from Craig James supports this approach. We focus on actual cash flow generated from clients’ portfolios, after which the nice decision to make is whether this income is used to spend, or re-invest. Please call us if you wish to discuss your cash flow position further.

Budgeting tips: Saving for your first home loan deposit Purchasing a home is more a test in endurance than anything. After all, taking the time to save up for the initial deposit on your home loan can seem like a cruel, excruciating experience. However, the feeling of owning your own home is rivalled by little and makes everything worthwhile in the end. So how do you get there? Well, here are a number of tips to help you save for your home loan deposit and get you that much closer to the goal of www.gcnews.com.au
property ownership. Save 10 per cent of your paycheck This may seem like an obvious place to start, it’s one of the hardest to follow through with. All too often it’s simply a case of digging into your savings for small purchases, chipping away at your saving effort and undermining the entire process. Set up another, separate account that cannot be accessed easily and put aside a set amount of your income each pay. While this may force you to cut down
on superfluous spending for a period of time, it will ultimately help you to purchase a home. Pay off existing debt While it may not seem like the best idea to spend money, sometimes paying off your existing debts can help you to increase your savings in the long run. By paying off your debts, you remove the extra repayments on interest that would accumulate over time. Being out of pocket in the short term could pay off big time
heading into the future, where you won’t be paying off any extra debts and cutting into money that could potentially be going towards your home loan deposit. Teresa Harrison Phone 5422 9458 or 0410 648 098

School News Biennial School Concert
Contributed by Eric Greentree The Beerwah State School biennial school concert program was held over two nights during the last week of term. All the children are to be congratulated for their performances as well as the staff, who are to be acknowledged for their work with the students to plan, develop and practise the performances. Their preparation reaped great reward, as excited parents and community members applauded and cheered the students, as all this effort was brought to life in a very entertaining concert. From the Year 1 and Prep students singing and dancing, through the skits and jokes of the Year 7 students, individual and class performances involving traditional dance and songs, bold pirates, hip hop dances, colourful underwater creatures and proud Australians, it did not take long before the finale had arrived and the Year 6 performance of ‘In the Navy’ with a surprise arrival of the Beerwah staff version of the Village
People. It appeared that not only did everyone have a ‘Place in the Choir’, but a wonderful program was also provided. The organisation of the concert was achieved through a great deal of effort by staff and other volunteers behind the scenes. The preparation and sale of tickets; the organising of sound tracks and audio visual elements; the making of other props and the program all takes time and the school would like to thank everyone for their marvelous contribution. Class room music teacher Miss Maxwell co-ordinated this year’s concert program and, with the assistance of staff, parent volunteers and past students, kept the program moving smoothly. Although the concert takes quite a deal of preparation and the moment on stage passes very quickly, the magic of that special moment is priceless. We thank and congratulate all involved in supporting this year’s concert program.

A highlight of the course was provided by the Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade who sprayed the children with their hoses each time they ran past. It was a warm day and getting wet was a great way to cool down! Not only was the event a fun and healthy activity for students, it also raised a lot of money for the school. A combined total of $6,686.00 in sponsorship money was collected by students. The profits from the Fun Run will be used to purchase resources and equipment to benefit the students. Thank you to everyone who supported the event by sponsoring a student or helping out on the day. A special thank you goes to the Landsborough Rural Fire Brigade, Landsborough Tyre Service, and the Landsborough Hotel, who all contributed to the Fun Run course activities.

For the past year Pam Bostock, owner of the Glenview Gardens Resort, has also been running the Glenview Country Bistro offering meals for breakfast and lunch, as well as Devonshire teas, and over that time she has built up a loyal local following. Pam admits that during this time she has been on a really steep learning curve, and she has made a number of mistakes along the way but she has taken on board the feedback and believes they have really stepped up both their service and quality. One message she has heard loud and clear from her regular customers is that they wanted somewhere casual where locals could get great traditional style pizzas and pasta for the whole family. Pam started to think about how she could ‘make the
locals happy’ and still be able to offer evening meals from her bistro. Over discussions with her friend Jules Hunter, an idea was formed. Jules and her husband Steve, who has a long history of working in hospitality including running Paradise Pizzas at Chancellor Park, decided to open ‘Palmview Paradise Pizza’ at their Glenview Road dining destination on a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. So from this weekend, they will be open for business featuring a mouth-watering menu of pizza, pasta and ribs with a delivery service, take-away and a casual dining option for eating in. Pam, Jules and Steve are extremely excited about bringing something to the locals that they have been crying out for, and Steve and Jules know how much
people loved their menu at Chancellor Park – so they are confident that the response will be great! Palmview Paradise Pizza will operate all day and for those dining in, it is BYO, and they are also able to supply gluten free options. Glenview Gardens Resort is located at 17 Glenview Road, Palmview and is open during the day for breakfast and lunch on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8.30am until 2.00pm and for Devonshire teas, coffees and cakes until 4.00pm. So, if you are passing you might want to pick up their new menu for Palmview Paradise Pizza or check out their facebook page – Glenview Gardens Country Resort. To phone for a pizza or make a booking call them on 5494 5411.

Health Check 24 Nutrition We would like to congratulate the latest Weight Loss Challenge Winners who lost a total of 32kg in eight weeks, sharing a prize pool of $750.00. Ros of Landsborough said she couldn’t believe she had won. “I only joined to support my daughter, thinking I was already perfectly healthy,” she said. “However, by applying a few things I learnt, my energy soared. My husband even asked ‘who are you and what have you done with my wife?’ I’ve lost two dress sizes and I feel fantastic. “I thoroughly enjoyed the fun atmosphere plus the 100% support we received – I’m just rapt with the whole process and will be joining the evening FitClub!” Second and third placed Patti and Sandra both lost eight kilograms, bringing Patti’s total 2013 Challenge loss to an amazing 36kg. Lisa from Beerwah, who lost the most centimetres during the challenge, found out about the challenge via 24 Nutrition’s FitClub. “Going along to FitClub gave me a place to learn how to become healthy and achieve the best outcomes for my weight loss,’’ Lisa said. “I also found a great social group of people, many on similar journeys, to keep me motivated.” The final 2013 Challenge starts on October 8 (day or night available). Call 5496 0582 to register. Spaces are limited.
Chiropractic can help with...
Reshape! Energise! Get healthy!
You don't have to age poorly
Your posture is a reflection of your genetic makeup plus injuries and habits from everyday activities acquired over time, from sitting, standing or even sleeping. Fortunately, the main factors affecting posture are within your ability to control and are not difficult to change. Your musculoskeletal system is a mechanical system. If you use it properly, it will wear down more slowly, if you misuse and abuse it, it will wear down faster than normal, causing aches, pains and conditions. You don’t have to age poorly, you can condition your body to age better by keeping fit, eating well and maintaining a healthy posture. Some of the consequences of poor posture use of your musculoskeletal system are, joint pain, muscular pain, muscle cramps and knotting, chronic joint inflammation, premature joint degeneration and an overall decrease in the quality of your life because of your inability to perform at the level you desire. Other symptoms related to poor posture are muscle and general fatigue, caused by misuse of the muscles, decreased lung capacity, and stress on your spinal cord. By improving posture you can improve your body’s functions, including breathing and digestion; as well as to safe guard against severe joint and nerve damage associated with poor posture techniques. At Living Well Chiropractic, we offer free posture and spinal care classes regularly, and yes, you and your family are invited to join us.

Public request
After reading in the paper today that the Council rescinded the motion to force ratepayers to have a green bin, I felt that was well justified – but not at the expense of those currently using this service. Those who do currently use the service, which might be one in every 20 or 30 homes, use it and have paid the required fee. So, why now is it to cost more? These bins are emptied every two weeks if left in the appropriate area. If we don't need to cut lawns etc, because of the elements, then we don't put these bins out. The service has to pass every home in every street to collect those bins so the service is at that cost. It doesn't rise because a revenue-making scheme didn't work out and the outcry by ratepayers has made it abundantly clear that it is not fair. I publicly request that the Ombudsman, Department of Fair Trading, our local AttorneyGeneral, all MPs, Federal and State, together with local councillors, look into this injustice to those that are thinking about clean energy and the future of our area. Those of us who consider the expense of installing solar power, or who currently pay the cost of the green bin and try to recycle correctly, hope that one day these efforts will save us money. But those who care seem to be the ones who are charged the most! I would also like to point out that the local Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre recycles the green waste and makes money from this, which in turn, they give back to this community in donations as a charity-based organisation on your behalf. You’re real lifesavers
I'd like to thank the team at Landsborough Vet Surgery, especially Grahame Lean (who gave up time on his day off) for saving my life last week when I was suffering the effects of my brown snake hunting escapades. I caught two Eastern Browns in one day, but unfortunately one of them caught me! Now that I'm all well again I'd like everyone to know how well they looked after me. By next week I should even be able to take Judi walking again. Jack Glass House Mountains
Unwelcome encounter
I'm a mad keen cross country mountain biker and spend some time most weekends in the forestry around Glass House Mountains and surrounds. I often encounter native animals such as kangaroos, wallabies, dingos, birds of prey and parrots. I also come across feral animals, some of which are magnificent, such as wild brumbies. Also to be found are feral pigs, and feral cattle that look much like the legendary Texas Longhorn. However on Sunday afternoon I had a most unpleasant encounter.
Climbing a hill south of the Tunbubudla Twins and north of Twin Peaks Road, I looked to the ridgeline as I heard barking, and reached up and turned on my helmet camera. Coming towards me at speed was a young mixed breed dog (ridgeback and mastiff cross I think), it had seen me and was making straight for me, I stood up on my bike and gave it a “get out of here!” which will usually see off a domestic dog (speaking from my cycling experience). However, it kept coming and barking and kept looking behind itself up the hill. At first I thought it was out walking with its master and just looking for him to come over the hill. However, when the rest of the pack started to appear at the top of the hill, I could see now that's what he was waiting for, and I decided it was time to see if I could beat the Olympic qualifying times for mountain biking from a standing start. The dog had a go at me on the bike and then chased me for some way before realising I was in ‘Olympic escape mode’ and gave up. What concerns me is this: What would have happened if I inadvertently rode into the pack? And: What are these domestic dogs gone feral doing not too far from the Hennesseys Hill designated mountain biking area, where lots of young people go to ride their downhill mountain bikes? A good spot to start the baiting program methinks! To my fellow mountain bikers whose tracks I regularly see, I believe if you encounter these dogs that 'discretion is the better part of valour!’ Nicholas Hooper Glass House Mountains
Sad loss to Beerwah
I would like to pay homage to the business owners of the three shops closing their doors in Beerwah: Gone Bonkers, Beerwah Shoes and the Garden Terrace Coffee Lounge. Despite many shop closures around them – and in the street as well – and with less customer traffic for quite some time, they have maintained their ongoing business activity which has helped keep Beerwah looking at least a bit alive and provided us all with a great service. Whilst all of the current restructuring activity etc in the area will happen in the near future we may have possibly lost three very valuable business establishments, which is sad for the locals and for them. Thank you for your service to the area, we all needed you as much as you needed us. Una Robinson Glass House Mountains
Council takes control
After 45 years of our stewardship, we have pleasure in advising that the four hectares of land in Glass House Mountains between Gardner Street and Pages Street that surrounds the lake and contains the footpath to Dana Close has been transferred to Council control. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those local residents who have through

their appreciation of this area, given support for this transfer to take place. Without doubt however, the efforts of our local Councillor, Rick Baberowski, were responsible for this outcome. Without his determined lobbying in Council, this would not have eventuated. The residents, both present and future, have much to thank him for. Gordon and Gloria Lawrie Glass House Mountains
I agree
Peter Bowles asks in his letter (25/9/13) several questions regarding C02 emissions globally and nationally. I didn't bother getting a copy off the question and answer sheet he supplied Glasshouse Country News but decided to do a little research of my own. I imagine the percentages will differ slightly but probably by no greater than a percent judging by the size of these numbers. I found C02 made up 0.04% of the atmosphere, of which 0.117% is man made. Australia contributes 1.5% of that 0.117%. He also asks if C02 is a pollutant, which I struggle to find feasible given its necessity to the photosynthesis process, the basis of mankind. I'm not a scientist but I believe more study should have been done before we opened our wallets to climate change taxes. Around the world, billions of dollars are being taxed from people and companies which have little or no scientific knowledge of what they've been told, but yet believe in so strongly. I'd like to thank both Peter Bowles and Glasshouse Country News for printing his letter as it is now almost unacceptable to question man made climate change in the media. I just hope that when this natural, cyclical weather pattern is forgotten about in a decade and laughed about like Y2K, bird flu and all other 'inevitable disasters', that people remember how much we paid our governments for this joke. Rick Baberowski Division 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council P: 5420 8987 New Glasshouse parkland
Baker’s dozen Beerburrum has a group of dedicated and community minded locals who are working on a ‘baker’s dozen’ of initiatives that were developed at a recent community meeting. Some great ideas like the creation of a creative industries hub, improved signage to direct more visitors into town and more work on representation of the important heritage of the area are under the microscope and I’m looking forward to working closely with the group to turn great ideas into a reality.
Speed limit change Earlier this year Council received strong local community support for a speed limit to be assigned on Endeavour Road, Beerburrum due to driver behaviour and increased traffic in the area. Council assessed the speed limit and tabled the findings at a recent local Speed Management Committee meeting where it was agreed to introduce a speed limit of 70 km/h on Endeavour Road from Steve Irwin Way to Panna Road. The speed limit signs are expected to be installed in early October and will be followed by a police presence in the area.
Shop local first The start of streetscaping work in Beerwah has made it harder to get a car park right out the front of your favourite shops at the moment but don’t let an extra 30 metres of walking deter you from shopping locally – local businesses need your support. Tara from Total Microsystems has done some amazing work on a shop local first campaign and you’ll be seeing more of that initiative rolling out in the coming weeks with excellent support from our Chamber of Commerce.
Jenny McKay
Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 Glenview Road
Last Saturday morning I went out to Mooloolah with Council staff members so we could catch up with the community about plans for improvements to Glenview Road. We must have talked to 100 people who were genuinely interested in the plans and had great questions and useful technical feedback for Council to take on board. Planned work on the road is undertaken on a yearly basis in keeping with the allocated budget for that year and Glenview Road is going to take at least five years to complete and that’s going to require millions of dollars. Cr Baberowski and I have been advocating for upgrades to the road for this financial year and I’m so pleased to see that work is about to get underway. We are also already working on securing funds for the following years to see the work through to completion. Of course there are hundreds of roads across the Sunshine Coast that could also do with an upgrade and it is an annual challenge that, as your elected representative, I’m ready to lead. I must admit that it was disconcerting to hear disparaging voices during our consultation and, as a seasoned community member, I know that people get frustrated and I certainly share that frustration (many times in one day). One thing I know for certain is that not everyone is going to be happy, even when Council is doing the best we can to improve local infrastructure and help make the Sunshine Coast a great place to live. I really do value community input and catching up with locals, especially at our monthly breakfast meetings, and hearing about what’s important and what needs to be done around the place. Glenview Road is about to get some well-deserved and long-awaited attention and I look forward to working with and for the community to get big projects like this underway for the benefit of the whole community. www.gcnews.com.au

Neurum Creek Music Festival
Neurum Creek, just the other side of Woodford, is right on our doorstep here in Glasshouse Country. For seven years now it has had a music festival, and with 1,200 people attending, it is small in the big scheme of things, and that is the way the regulars would like it to stay. It is a perfect size for a folk music festival with everyone camping within a minute or two of the stage and workshop sheds, and wandering from one campfire tune or song session to another late in the evening seems an acceptable thing to do, assuming one has the stamina required after a solid day’s listening and playing. As festivals go, the facilities couldn’t get better – very clean and reasonably new, the food and coffee right up there with the best, and the setting is pretty well ideal with the most exquisite creek imaginable for bathing and walking within a stone’s throw of the performing stage. What a pleasure and delight it was for me to attend my first ‘NC’, and with my usual passion for total involvement, assisted with the sound on the stage the weekend long and so got to enjoy at close hand every act on the program! With well over 100 performers it would be folly for me to list them all, and as the standard was extraordinarily high, remiss of me to list my favourites, as few performers failed to lift their game to the standards being achieved. You can find the program here: www.neurumcreekfestival. com/program/ Do have a look. It was an impressive get together of a wide range of musicians crossing stylistic borders with ease – Traditional Folk, Celtic, A Capella, Gospel, World (Brazilian, Latin, Flamenco, Cajun), Bluegrass, Country, Blues, Jazz was all there, and some in abundance to be savoured. It’ll be on again next year – after seven years the directors, Angela Kitzelman and Don Jarmey, aren’t taking a break! The weekend costs $65.00 including camping for adults and $25.00 for children – they don’t get much cheaper for this quality of event. Do yourself a favour and get on their mailing list, then hot foot it down to ‘NC’ for whatever bonanza they’ll have planned in 2014. I’ll certainly be there! And do have a creative musical month!

Mooloolah’s 150th Anniversary
This year marks a major point in history for Mooloolah as it turns 150 years old. Residents past and present, along with visitors from all around will come together to celebrate Mooloolah’s sesquicentenary (150 years) between October 19 and 27. Mooloolah has a colourful past with Indigenous culture, timber getters, pineapple, dairy and banana farming and two hotels. The Mooloolah River and the landscape, abundant with life, provided sustenance and important resources for settlement in the area. One hundred and fifty years ago, in 1863, logging started in Mooloolah. This was the time when pioneer William Grigor, in partnership with James Low and William Pettigrew, moved to the Mooloolah area. As the first white settlers to the area, they hauled timber from the area and rafted it to Brisbane. Coordinator of Mooloolah’s 150th anniversary, Natasha Odgers from the Hinterland Community Development Association, said events for the 150 year celebration will be bringing the history back to life as well as highlighting the wonderful community and town Mooloolah is today. On Saturday, October 19, the Mooloolah Mob will be taking a guided walk via the old train tunnel through to the Landsborough Museum. On the same day, an old steam train will be coming from Brisbane with passengers and others stopping for a Pit Stop Brunch hosted by White’s IGA at Martin Rungert Park. The brunch will have a jumping castle and face painting for the kids plus local produce and historical displays. The following weekend, October 26 and 27, will be the big celebrations. There will be a classroom re-enactment at the Community Centre, which is the original school. There will be a reunion morning tea opened by Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson and a historical photography exhibition on the Saturday at the Mooloolah Public Hall. www.gcnews.com.au

Live music
A lot of historical archiving has been happening this year with footage of long-term locals telling their stories and collections of hundreds of photos and other memorabilia. A brass band will march through town from the hall, with first stop at the Mooloolah Village Green for a commemorative ceremony. Councillor Jenny McKay will unveil a plaque, and some citrus trees will be planted for the community to look after and share the fruits of into the future. The brass band will then lead people to the Recreation Reserve where the big Pioneering Bush Picnic will be held, from 2.00pm – 9.00pm. This day will be a re-enactment of the annual Mooloolah Picnic which happened at the start of the 1900s. This will all be in colonial theme with live music, old style dances, food stalls, family races such as three-legged races and egg’n’spoon races, plus fireworks and more. On Sunday, October 27, there will be the Ewen Maddock Dam Activity Day. All the main users of the area will be putting on activities, like tours hosted by Seqwater and Council, the fishing and BMX clubs. Natasha Odgers said the contributions from the local community and the support from the local businesses and organisations for the celebrations has been fantastic. The anniversary organisers, the Mooloolah Valley Community Association with local volunteers, wish to thank Daisy’s Place, White’s IGA, Mooloolah Valley Pharmacy and many other sponsors For full details of Mooloolah’s 150th Anniversary visit www.mooloolah150years.org and www.glasshousecountryfestival.com.au OCTOBER 2 2013 |

Plant of the month
Baeckea frutescens
Weeping Baeckea The wildflowers of the Glass House Mountains include a number of shrubs which produce small white flowers in spring. If you have climbed Mt Ngungun you may have seen the lovely white flowering Leptospermum leuhmannii with the attractive bark and gnarled and windswept trunks. At lower elevations, Leptospermum polygalifium may catch the eye. One of the most attractive of the white flowering shrubs is Baeckea frutescens, more commonly known as the Weeping Baeckea. Baeckeas are plants of the moist wallum areas, along the banks of streams and occasionally in moist Eucalypt forests. The leaves are narrow, linear and needle-like, approximately one centimetre long. Leaves are aromatic when crushed. Baeckea flowers in spring through to November and is a good source of nectar for bees and other insects. Woody seed capsules form following flowering, and produce many fine seeds. Baeckea is a popular home garden plant as it only grows one to three metres.

Glass House Mountains local Tic Davis will again opened up her beautiful garden for us all to share. On the weekend of October 20 and 21, Tic’s garden at 55 Bassetts Road (off Kings Road), Glass House Mountains, will be open to the public to raise much needed funds for the RACQ CareFlight Rescue service. The CareFlight service means so much to her, because in 2010 her then 17-year-old daughter Melissa was in a car accident and was airlifted by a RACQ CareFlight helicopter to the Royal Brisbane Hospital. With Melissa now recovered, Tic endeavours to repay RACQ CareFlight, which doesn’t receive government funding, by raising money through her open garden. So, if you love gardens and would like to help a worthy cause, head to Tic’s Open Garden on October 20 and 21, from 9.00am - 4.00pm at Wandarri Farm, 55 Bassetts Road, Glass House Mountains. Entry is $5.00, with children free. There will be a $1.00 raffle with great prizes on offer including a Nespresso coffee machine and a wheelbarrow full of goodies from Coochin Creek Co-op and others. Also available for purchase will be morning tea, a sausage sizzle, spring rolls, and soft drinks, with tea, coffee and cordial free of charge.

Future Feast
I am on a mission this month in my valley. With only 3 months until Christmas and hectic times until then, I am getting stuck into cleaning up my patch and planting in heaps of vegetables. We are planning to spend Christmas at home this year and I am envisaging a home harvest feast. Whilst I feel a surge of what could be called panic when I realise the festive season is not that far off, I’m able to stay relatively calm knowing that if I get stuck into the garden now, my envisaged feast is still a possibility. Firstly, knowing that I will be crazy busy over the next nine weeks of the school term, I have been planting in a heap of summer vegetables as seeds and seedlings to spread out the harvest. Basically by doing this, it should provide approximately a 3-5 week interval between planting and subsequent harvest time. However, if the seedlings I’ve planted encounter any set back, such as transplant shock, this can hinder their growth and increase the time until harvest. To try to prevent this from happening, I have watered with a seaweed based liquid solution just after planting. Another key part to my preparation for the coming weeks has been to remove all of the older plants, except those that I’m leaving to go to seed. This is being done early this year, in an attempt to reduce the potential of fungal diseases that can become prevalent with the increased heat and moisture. I’m also figuring that I will not be able to be as attentive to catching these issues early, so prevention by removing them now is good management. The big clean up has provided a wealth of excess green waste, which has prompted me to revisit composting. However, instead of directly adding it all to a compost heap, I’m cycling it through the chook pen first. My aim here is to firstly give the chooks a treat, and secondly, to increase the nitrogen within the green waste via the chooks excretions, which will aid the decomposition process. Another super exciting addition to my compost and garden cycle are five of my very own manure producers. Yes, we have cattle! In just one week I have managed to shovel up about 4 wheelbarrow loads of cow manure to add to a very steamy compost heap. Finally, on a grand scale in our valley, my forty metres of potatoes are thriving, while my seventy-five metres of Yacon are just starting to pop up! The weeding for all this is rather time consuming, but made loads of fun with the sprinklers on at the same time. Just around the corner, maybe even before this goes to print, I should also have an acre of wonderful ginger planted. Hope you all get a chance at getting out and about in the garden in this beautiful weather. Until next time in Get Up and Grow…

CATHOLIC WEEKEND MASSES
Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Peter Hall Glasshouse Country Uniting Church
How we see things
As was reported recently, the Uniting Church hosted a team of people from Gaba Gaba village in Papua New Guinea. One little incident stayed with me. Driving to Peachester with two of the men as passengers, they commented on the height of the trees. Asked about this they said that the trees where they lived were small but our trees were very tall. Our trees were two-canoe and three-canoe trees whereas their trees were only one-canoe trees. It made an interesting reflection. How do we see other people? A slave trader in Africa sees people in terms of being a saleable commodity. In parts of China deformed babies are, or were, seen as a liability to be disposed of; to be left in a rubbish dump or drowned. In some non-mechanised mines in the world the miners are seen in terms of the number of tons they can dig out in a day, to be cast aside if they can’t achieve the quota. The same applies to many garment factories in Asia; if women can’t meet the quota they are fired. In some countries girls are seen as a sex commodity, to be sold to sex traders. In most of these situations people

are to be exploited due to their poverty and inability to command something better. In Australia these sorts of behaviour are against the law and we don’t normally encounter such things. Yet how we see other people determines how we speak and act towards them. So often, when people are different to us in some way, they are treated differently and can be the subject of hatred and abuse. Our individual attitudes to other people reflect something about each one of us. Jesus of Nazareth taught that each person is of value just because they are a person and they should be loved. It is important that we see people in terms of what we can be and do for them rather than what they can be and do for us. That was the teaching and example of Jesus. My experience is that we gain far more in human terms when we follow that teaching and example than when we take the opposite approach.

It’s also time to accept the necessity of making big adjustments in your personal life. New projects ahead. SCORPIO October 23 - November 22 With the Sun and Moon in Libra this week there is more than a chance you will desire reclusive privacy and withdraw from social activities. This is not the week to burn out your immune system as it may involve taking a day off for a ‘sickie’. Handling pressure helps resolve issues now. SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 22 This may be the week when you can see some financial returns from your occupation and perhaps realize your fondest hopes and wishes. You will achieve the best success by adding quality acquaintances to your circle. Best not to ignore worthwhile friends. CAPRICORN December 23 - January 19 Under this New Moon in Libra the first week of October achieves the best success by developing new business tactics and mingling with important people. There is a restless Sun/Uranus opposition which may tempt you to run away from a home clash or have to deal with radical behavior.
AQUARIUS January 20 - February 19 This New Moon week is in your sector of higher knowledge and big ideas. You may find yourself attending to correspondence in a clever way and heeding the views of others. Best to avoid arguing over beliefs and politics. A good week for contacting people in influential positions now. PISCES February 20 - March 20 You should be pleased to know that the emphasis this week under the New Moon in Libra is in your house of jointly-held money and property. Perhaps there is a win in a lottery or a sale of some real estate. A week to achieve great success by balancing accounts and clearing away debts. ARIES March 21 - April 20 This is a special week for you as the New Moon is in the sign of Libra on Saturday, October 5. The Moon moves through the sign of Virgo at the start of the week under a Sun/ Uranus opposition, so you will need a break from confinement. Pace yourself to claim your independence. TAURUS April 21 - May 21 This New Moon week says to seek balance in your health, work and service routines to maintain optimum wellbeing. Old structures are due to fall, or collapse, like Humpty-Dumpty. It’s a cordial, diplomatic Libran New Moon, so you will need other’s help to build for your new direction.
GEMINI May 22 - June 21 This New Moon week may see you feel the urge to push partnership limits much further when ardent Venus enters Sagittarius in your partnership sector. This will tempt you to seek passion and pleasure with reckless abandon. Such star aspects fuel desires overruling reason now. CANCER June 22 - July 22 The planet Mercury starts motivating you nicely at the beginning of the week with its intuitive powers under Neptune, but may find you handling negative relationship problems. The Libran New Moon is hit by Uranus/ Pluto involving complex dramas. You may have to make a sacrifice. LEO July 23 - August 22 This New Moon week in the sign of Libra revitalizes your mind. A departure from precedence in your thinking could yield surprising results. Some access to new information can help your release what is not working from the past, and open to a radical change into a world-rocking future. VIRGO August 23 - September 22 With the New Moon in Libra this week most members of your sign may find you chasing after monetary resources to re-establish order. There may be helpful business discussions with an associate over shared funds. A Saturn/Uranus stress paints a long-term picture to steady yourself.

Wife: "Nonsense, who said you were a better cook than me?" Maria: "Your husband did." Wife, increasingly agitated: "Oh he did he now???" Maria: "The third reason is that I am better in bed than you." The wife was really boiling and through gritted teeth said "And did my husband say that as well?" Maria: "No Ms. The gardener did." Wife: "So how much do you want?" The maid asked for a pay increase. The wife was very upset about this and decided to talk to her about the raise. She asked: "Now Maria, why do you want a pay increase?" Maria: "Well, there are three reasons why I want an increase." "The first is that I iron better than you." Wife: "Who said you iron better than me?" Maria: "Your husband he said so.” Wife: "Oh yeah?" Maria: "The second reason is that I am a better cook than you."
