Girls face a Byron’s stint on the shforoogtilonryg sidelines League comp creates headaches By Kirra Livingstone LOCAL clubs are concerned about their ability to field women’s teams in the opening rounds of the Sunshine Coast Gympie Rugby League competition after representative side the Falcons entered the expanded QRL’s Open Women’s Premiership. Clubs could be without their best players for eight rounds due to the crossover of competitions and rules stating that women selected for the Falcons are ineligible to play for their club. But some players could be made eligible if they are released for individual rounds.
The move has left administrators scrambling to ensure they have enough players. Beerwah Bulldogs president, Ref Hammill, said the club may struggle to field enough Open Women’s players in the 2024 season, with the team expecting to be missing a number of talented women. “By the time (the rep comp) finishes, it will be a good chunk of the start of the season without some of the girls,” he said. SCGRL president, Jodi Price, stressed although the BMD Premiership will cut into the season, it is a vital competition to accelerate women’s rugby league on the Coast. Story p3

Upgrades to Witta’s tower
TELSTRA is advising Witta residents to expect delays in their mobile coverage from January 29 to February 11 as the telco is adding infrastructure to the town’s mobile base station to improve connectivity. Scheduled works will temporarily impact mobile coverage for all Telstra customers in the area during daylight hours. Landline services, NBN, and mobile coverage from other providers will not be affected, and 000 calls, when the Telstra site is offline, will be diverted to any working mobile network to connect the call. Telstra’s acting regional general manager, Scott Mullaly, said crews need to work during daylight hours for safety reasons, but they will only switch off the site when necessary and will turn it back on as soon as possible. Telstra said the infrastructure upgrade will bring better 4G mobile coverage and introduce 5G mobile coverage to the community.

ON THE COVER Glasshouse teen Byron Hay beach training ahead of the Water Polo Youth Championships. Picture: Ian Martin PhotoConnect. Story page 29.
Mitch Gaynor Welcome to a very sporty edition of GC&M News. While many of us have been indulging in holiday festivities or adopting a sloth-like pace to the new year, there’s a notable group of individuals who seem to have no off switch, continually giving their all. Our front cover features Glasshouse’s Byron Hall, well on his way to greater achievements in water polo. Any sport that includes ‘brutality’ as an official term has my respect. Byron recently secured a sixthplace finish at the youth national championships, a remarkable achievement. Congratulations, and I’m certain we’ll be hearing more about his successes in the near future (P32). Staying in the Glasshouse Mountains, Ruben from the Little Athletics Club claimed third place in the 100m hurdles at his first international meet. The fact that it was an invitational event made the victory even sweeter for the teen,

walk away from, rather than into, unhelpful situations. Good luck to HBC and P4P Promotions—putting their pros on the fight card will not only benefit the fighters but inspire others to get involved. Check out the story on the next page. We also delve into the concerns some local league clubs are having regarding the introduction of a new representative team in the local women’s competition (p5). Balancing the exposure of women to high-level competition while enabling local clubs to field competitive teams poses a challenge. By all accounts, it could be a challenging start to the season, but let’s hope any teething issues are sorted quickly. Lastly, we had six Brisbane Lions squad members visit the Glasshouse AFL club last week. Great pics inside on p28. The whistle has just been blown on the year, and it’s already shaping up to Mitch be epic.

Boxing is brutal, not just in the physical sense, but also in the dedication fighters invest daily, chasing meager prize money. The big rewards are reserved for the top echelon, but the rest persist, pinning their dreams on their club and promoter to guide them toward meaningful belts and higher rankings. Every fighter knows the clock is ticking, with each punch potentially leading to disaster or, hopefully, a step in the right direction. To the untrained eye, boxing might appear as a brawl, but I advocate for it as a sport that builds character. It’s the sweet science, it’s chess, it’s peak fitness. You don’t have to step into the ring to enjoy its benefits; just get some coaching and hit some bags. It’s a sport that instills confidence in kids, empowering them to

Affordable housing boost By Sonia Isaacs SUNSHINE Coast Council will offer a 100 per cent rebate on standard infrastructure charges to identified community organisations which deliver affordable housing on the Sunshine Coast. The decision endorsed at Council’s January 18 Ordinary Meeting aims to pave the way for more affordable housing in the region. The rebate will be offered until 2028 and supports Council’s Housing and Homelessness Action Plan 2023. Sunshine Coast Council Mayor, Mark Jamieson, said it would support more housing, including separate housing, boarding and emergency facilities, to be delivered for those who needed it most. “This rebate will greatly reduce the development costs for organisations that provide affordable housing on the Sunshine Coast,” he said. The rebate will be accessible to entities registered on the national and/or state register as providing community housing services. The rebate applies to all forms of affordable housing provided by registered entities that meet eligibility criteria of the newly adopted changes to Council’s rebate policy.
New promoter ready to KO the competition HBC owner Steve Pitt has launched new venture, P4P Promotions IN a bid to break through the challenges of getting the very best possible fights for his stable of professional fighters, Hinterland Boxing owner Steve Pitt has taken matters into his own hands. Frustrated by the lack of opportunities and recognition for his talented fighters, Pitt has ventured into the realm of promotions with his new business, P4P Promotions. The primary focus of P4P Promotions is to expedite the careers of local boxers, with a special emphasis on propelling Dana ‘Deadly’ Coolwell to a world title in 2024. Pitt, alongside Coolwell (pictured), aims to create a platform that showcases the talents of Sunshine Coast boxers. The inaugural fight card, scheduled for March 23, will feature an intense battle between Coolwell and Fernando Tagpuno Jr for the IBO Inter-Continental Feather title. Notably, this event marks the first world title fight on the Sunshine Coast and the first-ever women’s world title in the region. Tywarna Campbell and
Brisbane-born Deanha Hobbs will face off for the WIBA World Super Feather title in the main event. Pitt’s decision to step into the role of promoter stems from the challenges of relying on outside parties.
Rather than letting opportunities slip, Steve decided to take control of the narrative. Looking ahead, Pitt’s long-term goal is to bring the first men’s world title to the Sunshine Coast,
Dana Coolwell and Steve Pitt from HBC
establishing the region as a boxing hub, particularly in anticipation of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games. Steve’s long term goal is to bring the first men’s world title to the Sunshine Coast, to establish the region as a hub for boxing, ahead of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic and Paralympic Games. “Our future long term goals is to help get a world title here for Dana, so we want to put it on ourselves, we are in talks with people and we believe we’ve got the product and the infrastructure here on the Sunshine Coast to do it,” Steve said. “We think by doing so we’ll be able to show the Sunshine Coast is a hub for world sporting events and leading into the 2032 Olympics I think that’s a step in the right direction. “We’ve got some good connections and networks and as a result of that Dana’s fanbase has been growing and growing exponentially especially in this region.” Pitt added there will be a plethora of opportunities for domestic and international
fights with this new endeavour. “If we win this world title for Dana, depending on what happens after that and where we sit, we will continue our already open negotiations with boxers over in America,” he said. In addition to international aspirations, Pitt envisions P4P Promotions as a catalyst for positive change in the community. He plans to launch a youth boxing program within his boxing club, with Coolwell as the ambassador. Drawing from his experience in the criminal justice system, Steve aims to provide opportunities for disadvantaged youth to find a path to success. “We want to create a youth program for young people in the community,” he said. “It is something that Dana and I are really passionate about, for both indigenous and non-Indigenous kids to break the cycle.” “If one in five kids can go back into the community, that in itself would be an achievement.” kirra@gcnews.com.au

$2k donation for school By Kirra Livingstone THE Maleny P&C has received a generous $2000 donation from Maleny Realty through the business’s Maleny Market on the Green stall fees of $20. The markets are held on the Maleny IGA’s spare parcel of land next door to Maleny Realty and IGA every 2nd Saturday and every 4th Thursday of the month. Maleny State School P&C president, Zoltan Bourne, said they are very grateful for the donation, and it will be spent at the Maleny OSHC centre, which opened on July 26, 2022.
“There is an incredibly innovative piece of furniture that’s a modular couch system that can be used and converted into cubbies,” he said. “This is important for children who need quiet time and the feeling that they need to feel cocooned. “It’s a perfect opportunity for them to emotionally regulate. “We care for many highneeds and special-needs children, and we have a 5 per cent rate of First Nations children, and a lot of them have faced difficult experiences.” kirra@gcnews.com.au
‘Challenges’ without rail Questions asked about Games transport solutions if Coast rail line isn’t delivered By Sonia Isaacs THE delivery partners for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games are anxiously awaiting the outcomes of two major Sunshine Coast public transport project business cases due for delivery in the first half of 2024. Grantley Switzer, the Sunshine Coast program lead for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, confirmed that there would be ‘challenges to deliver the Games’ without the required transport infrastructure in place. He reiterated the
critical importance for the region to have a viable, integrated public transport network sooner rather than later and bluntly confirmed that the ‘clock is ticking.’ Mr Switzer stated that while it was imperative to have a sophisticated public transport system in place for 2032, regardless of hosting the Games or not, the infrastructure was needed now. “Just looking at the SEQ Regional Plan and where we are heading with our population, and the congestion we are facing now; we’ve got to
get people out of cars and off the Bruce Highway and using public transport,” he said “We’re hopeful having a mega-event such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games will be the impetus for that investment|. “The challenge now is that we are on a critical path in terms of timing. “We’re at a really critical junction, and we are hopeful this will be the year
that some solid funding announcements are made to get moving.” Grantley emphasised the region’s need for a strong focus on transformational and generational investment in infrastructure. He stated that while the event and having the venues would provide a great legacy, the greatest legacy would be the significant improvement to the region’s public transport network. “Early modelling we’ve
done suggests without significant investment in improvements in public transport for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, it would be problematic moving people around,” he said. “With up to 7 million ticket sales predicted, at the moment, you could argue that the capacity to move those numbers around is simply not there.” Mr Switzer highlighted the good understanding at all levels of government that moving people across the three major event zones of Brisbane, Gold Coast, and
Sunshine Coast was going to be a critical success factor for the games. “The clock is ticking,” he said. “These are significant infrastructure projects, and we know globally there are significant supply and labour challenges currently in play. “So if we do want to get the Beerwah to Maroochydore rail extension and the Sunshine Coast public transport project happening, things need to progress quickly to be ready for when the flame is lit in July 2032.” sonia@gcnews.com.au

Owl be your baby tonight NOT vibing a white wedding? Berdie and Ricky weren’t feeling it either when they tied the knot recently. Instead the Hinterland pair went all in on goth vibes with black candles that bled red, lanterns with skills and a big black dress, candle ceremony and an owl ring bearer. Berdie, who owns Queen B Hair Artistry in the Glasshouse Mountains, held the wedding at the Noosa Botanical Gardens
with celebrant Nicky Jane from Hinterland Ceremonies. “I walked down the aisle to Ezio’s Family from Assassin’s Creed,” Berdie said. “And we had the pleasure of having Luna the owl from our local guy here in Glasshouse Raptor Vision, he flew down the aisle with our rings and it was the most amazing moment!” “We then followed to have our reception at the Cooroy Memorial Hall
with all of our photos from the day taken from a local photographer in Peachester, Bianca, who owns Winter Ivy Photography. She was absolutely amazing and captured our day exactly how I envisioned it. “We had a first dance on stage with a smoke machine and danced to Nothing Else Matters by Metallica as it’s our song and our second daughter was born to that song so it was a special moment.”

Division 5 contenders in conversation By Sonia Isaacs WITH the Sunshine Coast Council Elections less than two months away, local residents are being encouraged to make an informed decision when choosing the best candidate for their respective divisions. With this is mind, Maleny Forums will be hosting a special ‘Meet the Candidates’ event for Division 5 at the Maleny Community Centre on Tuesday February 20. Running from Conondale to Flaxton, out to Woombye and Glenview and then south to Mount Mellum and Crohamhurst, Division 5 traverses a large geographical area that includes Maleny, Montville, Palmwoods, and Mooloolah. To date, the three registered candidates who have thrown their proverbial hats into the ring are the current sitting councillor Winston
www.gcnews.com.au
Johnston, Queensland Greens candidate Tracy Burton and Independent, Richard Bruinsma. Kicking off at 6pm and facilitated by GC&M News’ managing editor Mitch Gaynor, the evening will provide a local platform for the three current candidates to introduce themselves, highlight their policies, and answer questions of relevance to the attending community. One of the organisers, Susi Schoensleben said the event would provide the opportunity for residents to raise local issues directly with the prospective candidates and gauge their response first-hand. She said reading an article about a candidate or their response to an issue was once thing; but to get a real feel for who they were and what they stood for benefited immensely from a face to face meeting.
“This forum gives candidates a real opportunity for authentic community engagement and it can also allow residents to level the playing field by being able to see how each candidate responds to community questioning and assess their level of local knowledge and capacity to represent the electorate and champion local issues,” Ms. Schoensleben said. Numerous ‘hot topics’ are already envisaged for the Q&A including housing affordability and accessibility, local facility management and queries around how candidates plan to retain the character of hinterland towns, local environment and community in the face of evolving regional challenges. This is a free event, and for more details see the Maleny Forums facebook page. sonia@gcnews.com.au

Streetscape project brings modern touch to hinterland heritage town By Sonia Isaacs WORK is set to begin on the next phase of streetscape enhancements for Cribb Street, Landsborough. With a primary focus on enhancing and revitalising the historic main street, the community-driven planned improvements are a continuation of the multi-stage Landsborough Placemaking Master Plan, initially approved by Sunshine Coast Council in January 2020. The first stage of the Cribb Street streetscape
project was finished in 2021, and with additional State Government funding, the council is now initiating work on the second and final stage. Sunshine Coast Council’s placemaking team has collaborated extensively with the Landsborough community over several years to formulate a comprehensive master plan Division 1 Councillor, Rick Baberowski, said the streetscape project aims to establish a more robust, functional destination and a beautiful town centre.
“This next stage of the streetscape project will concentrate on the park/ station side of Cribb Street, providing an enhanced central gathering space for
the community to unite,” he said. “The park enhancements will complement and enhance the works already accomplished in the first
stage of the streetscape project, adding more amenities and functionality to the main street as a space for locals to enjoy, commuters to navigate efficiently, and visitors to explore.” Noteworthy features of the new area comprise shelters and seating, a play space, a lawn area for community events, additional shade trees, and creative lighting elements to build on the distinctive night-time
lighting of the township. Additionally, the council plans to install an expanded heritage trail in collaboration with the community. Landsborough Museum’s Hayley Rowan said the project would help celebrate the town’s rich cultural heritage through the diverse design elements of the streetscape project. She highlighted the museum’s excitement about the expansion of the heritage trail. The completion of Stage 2 is anticipated in mid-2024. sonia@gcnews.com.au

The only Hinterland recipient, Cr Johnston has been awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the General Division in honour of his extensive contribution and conspicuous service to the Sunshine Coast community. The award was announced by the Governor General on Australia Day with the medal to be

presented at a special ceremony later in the year at the Governors house. Cr Johnston said he was extremely chuffed and humbled to be recognised in such a significant way. He said his parents originally emigrated from Northern Ireland in 1948, and he recalled strongly that his dad was always very proud to be called an Australian. Likewise, Cr Johnston said along with his two sisters he were also extremely proud to be Australian, and it was a great and substantial honour to receive the medal. “This is an incredible
honour in recognition of my council and community involvement of 50 years,” he said “I’d like to particularly thank my family; my wife Helen and our children who have allowed me to become so involved in various sectors of community life from a young age.” Cr Johnston also acknowledged that the award paid tribute to the support and encouragement of many people in the community over the years; from his current role as Sunshine Coast Councillor for Division 5 and previous position as Caloundra City
Councillor, Division 2, (19821991) to presidency and life membership positions of various community groups and associations. These include the Maleny Show Society, Maleny Chamber of Commerce, Maleny Blackall Range Lions Club, Maleny State High School and Primary School Parents and Citizen association and Liberal National Party. Over the decades, Cr. Johnston has also been involved in a multitude of committee positions spanning various community, business and professional sectors including the Maleny District
Sport and Recreational Committee, Maleny SubBranch Board, Returned and Services League of Australia, Sunshine Coast Tourism and Development Committee, University of Sunshine Coast Planning Committee and Sunshine Coast Hospital Board to name a few. “There have been so many people in the community who have supported me, and you just can’t achieve significant results without the help and assurance of friends, colleagues and the community in general. This
is not just an award for me but more a recognition of the great support I’ve received from many people over the years,” he said. Cr Johnston added that while he was extremely honoured to receive the award, there were many others in the community that were equally deserving such as Gail Denver who sadly passed away last year. Cr Johnston will be contesting his Division 5 position in the upcoming Council elections on March 16. sonia@gcnews.com.au

World Day of Prayer theme on Palestine THE 2024 World Day of Prayer will be held on March 1 at the Mary MacKillop Catholic Centre in Beerwah. The host Church is the Glasshouse Country Anglican Community and the service will commence at 9.30am. The theme this year ‘I beg you bear with one another in love’ and is focused on Palestine. The service has been compiled by the Ecumenical group of Christian Women in Palestine and calls on people to bear with each other in love, despite all difficulties and oppression. The program was
written by a group of ecumenical Christian Palestinian women - prior to the current conflict - and is in response to the passage from Ephesians 4:1-7. Organisers reflected collectively on this theme from the context of our suffering as Palestinian Christian women. “We hope to inspire other women around the world to bear with one another in love during troubled times,” they said.

Win $1000 off your rates RATE notices are on their way and due for payment by Friday, February 23. There’s a simple way Sunshine Coast ratepayers can put themselves in the running to save $1000 off their bill. Sunshine Coast Finance Portfolio Councillor Ted Hungerford said ratepayers could give themselves a chance to win with just two easy steps. “Ratepayers who pay their rates online and sign up to receive their future rate notices by email will put themselves in the running to win $1000 off their next rate bill,” Cr Hungerford said. “Ratepayers who already receive their rate notices by
email will automatically be in the running to win if they pay their current rate bill via one of the convenient secure online options which are included on your rate notice. “Ratepayers who still get their rate notices by traditional post can put themselves in the running to win by registering for a MyCouncil account or logging in to an existing account and changing their rate notice delivery method to email, before 5pm on Wednesday, February 21. You can create your own MyCouncil account on Council’s website and/or logging on.
PLANS for a nature-based tourism park including 20 camping sites at Conondale have been lodged with Sunshine Coast Council. It follows the council issuing a show cause notice to the owners of the property, at 50 Kennedy Rd, in May last year threatening “firm action” if an application was not made. In documents lodged this month, the owners have proposed a naturebased tourism ‘Eco Park’ at the site. The property is approximately 9.15 hectares about 7.5km south of Conondale. The proposal stated a material change of use is appropriate “given the site’s unique natural values and immediate proximity to Scrub Creek and the Mary River.” “The unique natural environment of the Mary River (i.e. connection to nature) warrants the campgrounds being defined as Nature Based Tourism, as guests are able to observe and appreciate the local ecosystem and enjoy the picturesque natural setting.” The application states the owners will live on site as caretakers and it would only be open to guests from Thursday to Sunday.

Local lads receive Council’ regional arts development funding to record new album By Sonia Isaacs LOCAL band ‘Owls of Neptune’ were recent recipients of Sunshine Coast Council’s latest Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grants program. The $5,000 grant has allowed the locally based four piece rock band to complete recording of a full length studio album with well-regarded Hinterland producer Angus Woodhead at Glasshouse Studios. GC&M News caught up with band members Pete Gray (Vocals, Guitar and Keys), Matthew Brook (Drums), Jan Michael Chu (Bass) and Todd Fajdiga (Lead Guitar) to find out more. Q: Why did you choose your name and what does it mean? We originally called ourselves ’Red Letter’ but
when we searched the name we found there were lots of organisations with that name so we were quite hard to find. Todd then came up with ‘Owls of Neptune’ which we all thought was very cool and totally unique so we’re easy to find online! We were having a break at rehearsal and discussing the name change and a tawny frogmouth flew into the garden and came and sat on the post right next to us and so we saw that as a good omen! Q: How would you describe your sound/ what are some key musical influences? We’re a rock band with our own flavour. We border on quite a few different genres and when we build our songs we just play what we feel is right for that particular piece. Pete
draws a lot of influence from The Beatles and John Lennon especially when it comes to writing lyrics. Matt is inspired by Black Sabbath and Led Zepplin. Todd listens a lot to Johnny Marr and The Cure, and Isaiah Mitchell and Jay loves Stone Temple Pilots and Patti Austin. It’s a bit of a melting pot in terms of our influences but that helps contributes to our unique sound. Q: How do you feel about being awarded a RADF grant? We are over the moon about getting the RADF grant. The grant supports local arts and culture in regional Queensland. We have been awarded funds to assist with the recording of our second al-bum. Recording can be an expensive process for
artists so it’s great to have a professional product reflecting our work! We had some really positive support from a number of venues and people in the local music industry which has meant a lot us, and we have been fortunate to have had great local response from the beginning, and encouragement from local musicians like Michael Whittiker. We are very grateful to be able to be recognised in that way. With that extra help we’ve managed to complete the album already and we are so eager to release it! Q: What made you choose Glasshouse studios to record your album? We recorded our first album ‘We’re Not Apart’ in 2020 at home and thought we did a great job. Then we
heard a track from a great local band and mates of ours ‘Chamberlane’ and it really captured their live sound which is what we were after. It also made us realise that our recordings were just not professional enough. We found out they recorded with Angus Woodhead at Glasshouse Studios. He has a great ear and works fast and efficiently. We live tracked everything at Six String Studio in Beerwah and then finished everything off at Glasshouse Studios. He has done a superb job of capturing our sound. Q: What do you love about what you do? I think for all of us creating and playing music is something we can’t ever stop doing. It’s our therapy, the world can be falling apart
but when we start to play we disappear into another realm and it’s an awesome feeling. It’s also great to see other people tap into what you play and go to the same place. Music helps people escape the daily grind and helps you relate on another level. It’s lovely to see people enjoying themselves it really drives us. Q: What are your future band plans/what local gigs do you have coming up? We’ll be kicking off an east coast tour starting in Febuary at Agnes Blues Roots and Rock Festival and then we’re off to NSW for the first time, its very exciting! Our local stop on this tour will be at Solbar on March 16. Follow us on our socials or check the website for more announcements and dates around the tour.

You SAID IT.... Angry Andrew Plays Politics You wanted us to show you the money. Well, Mr Wallace, here it is. It does not reflect well on a wasted decade of Coalition sloth. In 2018, the Morrison government budgeted $390 million to upgrade the Beerburrum to Nambour rail line. The Albanese government honoured that promise. Mr Wallace continues to pretend that when he was in government, something actually got built. It didn’t. Everybody agrees that the Beerburrum to Nambour rail upgrade is well overdue. In 2023, we saw progress in the $550.8m funded project Stage One ($160.8m – State, $390m – federal), with the Queensland State Government funding 30 per cent, 10 per cent more than the agreed National Partnership Agreement at that time. Up to 2022 project expenditure has been $22.27m, and between 2023 and 2026, it is estimated that the balance of the project will be spent. Several sub projects have been delivered. Mr Wallace is also incorrect in his attack on the Queensland State government regarding funding for the 2032 Olympic Games. Reference to the National Partnership Agreement (NPA) on Land Transport – Budget 2023-24 Schedule reveals the following: Total Budget $3.2bn split between Federal ($1.6bn) and State ($1.6bn). Expenditure budgeted to commence in 2025/26 ($50m), 2026/27 ($100m), and $1.4bn in 2027/28. No doubt the balance will be expended
in time to meet the 2032 Olympic commitment. Facts overcome hubris every time. Major projects such as these are extraordinarily difficult to achieve, and it is heartening to see both State and Federal labor governments getting on with the job in our Region. Ken Dyer Landsborough
Don’t ignore suffering In my earlier two letters my questions focussed on Peter Dutton’s assertion that there was to be no talk of “restraint” in the bombardment of Gaza to be mounted by the Israeli military. I then read Peter Dutton’s speech containing religious reflections which was delivered at a parliamentary National Prayer Breakfast on 13 November. On reading that speech, “the penny dropped for me” and I realised that I would hear no responses from Liberal Party leadership to any of my questions as to whether, or why, it endorsed the continuing killing of civilians in Gaza. There were two very significant silences in Peter Dutton’s speech.
Letters and Opinions The first silence came when Peter Dutton expressed his (heartfelt) concerns about a “chain of epoch shaping events of recent times”. He listed: the pandemic, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Hamas’ terrorist attack on Israel and tensions in our own region”. But totally absent was any acknowledgment of the continuing bombing onslaught on Gaza resulting in thousands of Palestinian women and children being killed. As regards this event, there was not one (heartfelt) word from the speaker. The second silence related to the choice of biblical texts cited in the speech. Remarkable was the omission of one of the most famous gospel sayings attributed to Jesus which clearly signalled Jesus’ positive valuing of children. Mark 10:12 recounts how Jesus overrode his disciples objections when mothers brought children to Jesus. The account reads: “But when Jesus saw it, he was much displeased.” The old English translation then used what now reads as a sadly ironical verb: “Jesus said: “Suffer the little children to come unto
me…”. Jesus’ action and statement stand out in the ancient world. His actions and words decidedly gave priority to the wellbeing of children. But it would seem, in regard to Gaza’s suffering children, they are to be calculatedly ignored in our present divisive Australian political context. That is sad political theology and calculation. Dr Ray Barraclough Currimundi
Stick to facts I‘m over the continuous whinging about what is historical fact, so here’s a letter for the “Whinge page”...(You said it) Britain established the colony of New South Wales 236 years ago. At that time, all wealthy, politically organised, astute and technology-rich nations were out to make a buck through colonisation of any piece of Earth they could put their feet on. If it hadn’t been the British it would have been the French or German nations who set up shop here. None of us here today were there at the time, so shouldn’t be held accountable for that event 236 years ago. About 82 years ago, Japan thought it was a good idea to set up shop here. They didn’t, because the predominantly caucasian politicians of the day had made world-wide allies, who helped our predominantly caucasian defence forces to keep them out of our homeland. Therefore, we have Anzac Day to commemorate. Ours is a multicultural nation. Over the past 236

years we have developed cultural aspects that we can call our own. New Australians have brought their customs and cultures with them over time. They don’t expect everyone else to celebrate their individual cultures exclusively. Blood wurst and slimy cabbage, anyone? Surely, on the day/month that the nation, as we know it now, began its journey 236 years ago, we can ALL agree that despite some
rotten apples in the barrel and collective ignorance over the years, we want to celebrate the good things that have been achieved on Australia Day: including the 90+ per cent Yes vote of the 1967 Referendum that gave the descendents of native peoples of pre-1788, the modern day rights and responsibilities of all people who now call Australia home. Pain is only skin deep, so they say THANKFULLY this story isn’t about me, but spare a thought for the poor Hinterland bloke who spent a couple of weeks in hospital over the new year after suffering a severe burn when his motorbike fell on him. Not his fault either. Multiple skin grafts later he thought he was on the mend - even if it didn’t feel
Do you
like it - only for the doctors to inform him that, whoops, theose skin grafts didn’t take, because, ummm, we put them on upside down. So back to the hospital for another graft and another round of pain. I’m no surgeon but surely a burns unit specialist can tell one side of the skin from the other. CANDIDOTES
Interesting watching the council elections heating up. Is it just me or is there a bit of similarity between some candidates campaigns. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. May the best person win. OZ DAY LAMENT Thank goodness that’s all over with. The predicatibility of these
arguments is a bore. I’ve never wanted to wear an Australian flag bikini or chant ‘Aussie, Aussie, Aussie’, but I don’t want to feel like a racist for being proud to be an Australian. SOFT LANDING Apparently all the talk is of a soft economic landing this year. A record number of interest rate rises have (almost) done the job
apparently. Although juxtapose that with falling g inflation against a strong economy and you might askk why it’s falling. Were record rate rises not necessary? Louis Vitton’s parent company just revealed record sales and profit last year, so the rich did their bit to hold the economy upright. Thanks folks.
K N CRA the Croc AIR CON I’m surely the last person in Queensland without aircon. I almost caved last week. They haven’t got me yet, although the mould might.

Contributed by Lea Dodd ROSETTA Books is excited to introduce you to our new Lead Bookseller, Andrea, and we encourage you to come into the store and say hello. Like many of us, when Andrea was growing up, she could always be found reading a book. But it was not until she was in her early 20s that she discovered bookselling. Andrea reveals that “it all began when I was on a working holiday in Canada, where I was offered a job
in the picturesque tourist town of Banff, Alberta with family-owned Banff Book & Art Den. Upon returning home to Australia, I settled in Brisbane, where I worked predominantly with Mary Ryan’s”. Andrea is now delighted to call Maleny her new home, although she is not entirely new to the town, having lived here before. While Andrea’s favourite genre is fiction, she is ready to help you with all your reading needs. She holds a degree

Happy birthday Aquirkians! With the Sun in your sign, plus the indelible imprint of Pluto’s entry into Aquarius for the next twenty years transforming the world at large, its scientific discoveries, technological advances, social changes and progressive ideas will be the background to your own personal evolution.
In addition to Uranus, planet of change, in Taurus, Pluto’s long-term move to the sign of the unexpected can be taxing for fixed signs like yourself. But with this celestial scenario in place for the foreseeable future, best start finding a way of making obligatory changes work in your favour.
This week’s celestial energies are mentally and technically oriented. According to physical astrology, your fiery sign rules over the heart, so the question for Leos is: how can you bring more heart energy into this digital, tech-obsessed world? Even just one thing each day could make a significant difference.
This week’s planetary pattern offers Scorpios the opportunity to catch yourself digging in your heels and stay flexible. To be willing to pivot, especially in negotiations concerning home, family or base of operations. Proposed changes may be challenging, but patience and curiosity can uncover their exciting sides.

Planetary emphasis on the final cycles that are naturally occurring in your life asks what do you need closure on before your astrological new year kicks in? Executive Mercury in efficient mode is assisting this audit with sensible judgments, unsentimental decisionmaking and no-nonsense communication.
Predominantly air-sign vibes are this week’s gift for your busy, buzzing Twinship. Which is great for brainstorming and inspirational ideas, but carries the danger of overload, making it difficult to focus and move forward with grace and glide, so factor in downtime, quiet time, device-free time.
Virgo’s mentor planet, Mercury, in its most organized and efficient mode, is currently offering an excellent assist for decluttering, downsizing and ticking off the to-do list. Perfect timing to take advantage of this week’s astral energy firing up your work zone with a stimulus package from the cosmos.
As this busy week escalates activities in your local community and social groups, don’t be surprised if its digital insistence starts giving you a brain ache. Should this happen, go for a walk or drive in nature (preferably off your beaten path) to reboot your organic, natural intelligence.

Motivational Mars, your primo planet, in Aries’ astro-zone of ambition and public recognition till midFebruary, makes this a good time to reach out to mentors and supporters, and/or launch some vigorous self-promo, perhaps set up a stylish rebrand. This week says: Don’t wait – investigate.
While this week’s astrology has its wild surprises and friendly pleasures, it’s not the most sensitive or sympathetic of transits. But no being hard on yourself or others please; the variations of the human dance won’t always favour our preferences, so just do your best and forget the rest.
With astral energetics in your sector of self-expression and creativity, which some astrologers call the house of fun, what could be more enjoyable for a Libran? Use this cycle to explore and experiment, and if you feel you might be outgrowing who you’ve been up till now, then you’re on the right track.
Though its random and sometimes radical energy might seem counter-intuitive to your structured sign, this week’s planetary emphasis in Capricorn’s zodiac zone of finances and holdings offers plenty of scope for making progress on what’s most valuable to you, so stay open to new opportunities.

Church & Communit y NEWS You Got to Leave Something Behind
WHETHER you have studied physics or not, I think everyone has heard of Sir Isaac Newton’s Third Law of Motion. “Every action has an opposite and equal reaction.” We see this law all around us - a fish swims forward as it’s fins exert a backforce. A rocket ascends in response to downward propulsion. It’s an interesting concept that to some extent mimics human behaviour. Think about the inclination to lash out when we are hurt. Or the globally hoped for COVID vaccine that spawned unprecedented protest. Or the 1996 Port Arthur massacre that resulted in some of the tightest gun control laws in the world. Even in the gospels we also see Jesus work with a dynamic of action and reaction (Mk 1.14-20). When his cousin John the baptiser is unjustly persecuted, Jesus chooses this moment to begin forming a movement for teaching, healing and justice. In response to the Kingdom of Rome designating a Jewish carpenter as a person of low importance, Jesus enters ministry with proclamation, a practice that signalled a person of status had entered public life. When Jesus calls fishermen to be his first disciples he invites them to leave an economy that catches people out and work for a community that welcomes people in. For every action there is a reaction. Or as cleverly paraphrased in the movie Interstellar, to go anywhere, you’ve got to leave something behind. For the first disciples, following Jesus meant leaving assumptions and discriminations behind. They characterised themselves as ‘People of the Way’ because faith has something to do with movement - away from

Anglican Church what separates and toward what gives life back - dignity, equity, meaningful work, and communities of respect and belonging. The question of what makes for such communities is one we continue to struggle with. Around January 26 every year the conversation erupts without resolution, but what we know is this: In 1788 Governor Phillip raised the Union Jack, flag of the British Empire, signalling the beginning of an era of dispossession, division and desecration of life. Since 1935 this day has been proposed as a celebration, and since 1935, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities have expressed their distress at what such symbols represent. As Australians who now follow a different flag and Christians who follow Jesus, we should be challenged because, like Newton’s famous law, we understand that the right actions and symbols can build positive movement, while the wrong ones will alienate. We also know that a life of faith is not simply saying yes to the journey, but one of constantly examining our direction of travel against the divine laws of motion asking, Where is this taking us? What can we leave behind? And perhaps most importantly, Can we take this step together? For every action there is a reaction. As the year unfolds, I pray the steps we take may make gentler paths for each other into the future.

There was fun to be had in the open day at the showgrounds which the MDSRC organises for Australia Day where our club joined others to put their activities on display. One of the favourites amongst the children and some fairly old ones as well were the “diabolicals” pictured here with a couple of professionals struggling to successfully negotiate the course. It has been noted that an under ten team would sweep the field against all comers. Must be something to do with having a more flexible brain. The day went well despite the weather, and we were pleased to snag some local interest who turned up for the practise session on Saturday. Dianne Horsman and Sarah Widin teamed up to play a game of doubles against Donna Manning and Lynette Evans on Thursday. Donna and Lynette squeaked home with a 10 – 9 victory. Wendy Raven and Helen Andrews scored 9 hoops between them to convincingly beat Wallace Roy. Sunday saw steam rising from the lawn as players battled sauna conditions to play. Nick Cram and Dianne handled the conditions best on lawn 1 with Nick registering a 16 – 8 win against Sarah while Dianne excelled herself to beat Donna 24 – 13. On lawn 2 Ken Barker and Wallace formed a team to play Lynette. Once Ken left at 4 p.m., having himself contributed nothing to the game, Wallace played well to give the final score some respectability with Lynette winning 11 – 7.

She is very affectionate and a likes to chat. She lived with dogs and kids in her previous home and seems to largely ignore other cats, so would be likely be fine with other pets as long as they weren’t too full on. Fifi isn’t a fan of wet food but loves a good quality dry food and treats. Come meet her today.
Buddy is a big happy boy with a large d personality. He came to us from the pound so we don’t know much about him. He is a ced dog strong dog so would suit a more experienced owner with the ability to rein in his enthusiasm. He would be brilliant as a watch dog as he is always alert and vigilant. He would love a family that is willing to help him with training and direction. He is now looking for a forever home, please come and meet this happy chap.

Lions drop in to Glasshouse AFL stars meet and greet local kids SIX players from the Brisbane Lions AFL Club dropped down to Skippy Park on January 25, throwing a ball, doing meet and greets, and signing autographs for the Glasshouse Hinterland AFL Club. The players donated their time away from the club’s pre-season camp on the Sunshine Coast. Midfielders Josh Dunkley, Harry Sharp along with defenders Darragh Joyce and Jack Payne and forwards James Tunstill and Brandon Ryan all talked to
aspiring stars and helped with some key drills. Glasshouse Hinterland AFL Club president and senior coach, Dean Crooks,
said everyone from parents to kids had a blast and emphasised the importance of events like these to increase exposure. “Sunny Coast is the fastest growing region in the country and Queensland are the fastest growing AFL state, so getting these players to visit helps us gain exposure and attract more junior players,” Dean said. The kids got a chance to train with the players, working on basic ball skills for 30 minutes, followed by a meet and greet and sausage sizzle put on by Bank of Queensland Beerwah.

Liam Pope hangs up the gloves HINTERLAND Boxing Club owner and coach, Steve Pitt, has confirmed one of his professional boxers, Liam Pope, has retired from the sport. In the three years training out of the club and working with Pitt, Liam had won two titles in 2023, and three total in his career. Pope held the Australian National Boxing Federation Queensland Super Feather title, the Australian Feather title and the Australian National Boxing Federation Australasian Super Bantam title. He also contended for the Australian Super Bantam title against Erik Sokolov, but unfortunately lost the bout in a split decision in 2022. His former coach said Liam had achieved all of his boxing goals, and decided it was time to hang up the gloves and focus on his young family. Liam’s professional stats since debuting in 2021, was six wins, two by KO, and one loss.

FairPlay vouchers now open ROUND 10 of the FairPlay program is now open, which provides children in grass roots sports $150 vouchers, to help ease the sting of sports memberships, registration and participation fees, to ease cost of living pressures. The grant assistance is available for kids aged five and 17, and the program has 40,000 vouchers worth $6 million on offer this round. Since the program began in 2019, an investment of over $27 million has seen more than 182,000 vouchers redeemed by eligible families. This program is part of the state government’s 10-year strategy to boost and promote active lifestyles.
GLASSHOUSE Mountains teenager, Byron Hay, has placed sixth in Australia in the U16s age group at the Australian Youth Water Polo Championships (AYWPC) held in Brisbane in the largest festival for water polo in the southern hemisphere. Byron competed at the championships for two weeks, and enjoyed the competitiveness at the AYWPC that the contest brought, with 28,000 spectators glued to the water polo action. “The competition was fierce and that’s what makes it really exciting. I was fortunate to be selected this year to play in

both the under 18 and under 16 divisions for Sunshine Coast. “It was great to have the event hosted closer to home in Brisbane, last year we had to travel all the way to Perth”, he said. Byron has been a youth member of the Sunshine Coast Water Polo club for three years, and trains all year round travelling to the northern end of the Coast to Peregian and Noosa to access his coach and Olympic water polo pools. To compete at the AYWPC, Byron took part in an intensive pretournament camp, which included pool work, video
reviews, dry land work and beach sessions, allowing him and other players of the team an opportunity to bond with their teammates. “I really love my team and I’d never let them down, we are all such good mates and we all understand each other’s strengths and abilities. “We train hard, we play hard, but I also think we are the team that has the most fun. “We’re really quite unique in that way”, he said. He also got to train with the local water polo team in Marbella, Spain in April last year, which was a once in a life time experience. “It was an amazing
experience,” he said. “It was all in Spanish, so I had to try and work out what the coach was yelling at us, it took me a few days to get used to it. The players were super friendly, a couple of them spoke a bit of English. I don’t think they’d met an Aussie before so that was pretty cool,” Byron said. Byron is already back to resume play in the Brisbane Water Polo Inc competition, which is a weekly tournament which finishes in March. His next major competition is the Water Polo Queensland State Titles, taking place in Brisbane this April.
Hurdles are no barrier for Ruben GLASSHOUSE Mountains Little Athletics rising star Ruben Coombs has won an impressive bronze in the 100 metres hurdles at the Colgate South Island Games, as part of the New Zealand Little Athletics development tour. Ruben did the Glasshouse
club proud, travelling as the only representative from the hinterland club and walking away with the prized medal. The tour took place on January 6-15 and allowed Ruben to experience Little Athletics on an international scale, alongside other
Queensland based athletes picked in the exclusive U15s group. His mum, Rochelle, highly recommended the experience for future and upcoming athletes, while thanking the Glasshouse Mountains Little Athletics committee and parents in supporting his trip.

A CATHOLIC bloke goes into the confessional box. He notices on one wall a fully equipped bar with Guinness on tap. On the other wall is a dazzling array of the finest Cuban cigars. Then the priest comes in. “Father, forgive me, for its been a very long time since I’ve been to confession, and I must first admit the confessional box is much more inviting these days.” The Priest replies, “You’re on my side, get out”. *** Have you ever been guilty of looking at others your own age and thinking, ‘surely I can’t look that old?’ I was sitting in the waiting room for a first appointment with a new dentist. I noticed his DDS Diploma on the wall, which bore his full name.
Suddenly I remembered a tall, handsome, dark haired boy with the same name had been in my year at high school, some 30 years ago. Could he be the same guy I had a secret crush on, but upon seeing him, I quickly discarded any such thought. This balding grey-haired man with a deeply lined face was way too old to have been my classmate. After he examined my teeth, I asked if he attended Morgan Park High School. “Yes, yes I did,” he replied. “When did you graduate?” I asked. He answered “1975. Why do you ask?” “You were in my class!” I exclaimed. He looked at me closely, then asked, “What did you teach? Contributed by Eunice Prikett

Garden
WITH BROWNIE
Jobs for the yard in February • Start a winter vegetable garden bed from scratch by layering sugarcane mulch, mushroom compost and manure to a depth of 70cm. Keep moist and allow it all to decompose. By March it will be a luscious organic soil ready for planting.
Vegetables Plant eggplant, capsicum, radish, cucumber, lettuce, sweet corn, beetroot, zucchini, leek, silver beet, parsnip, potato, rhubarb, turnip, choko, pumpkin, snake beans, carrot, celery, melons, spring onion, squash and sweet potato.

Flowers
Ivory Curl Tree
IF there’s one thing I love about this time of the year … and it’s definitely not the humidity and rain … it’s when the Ivory Curl Trees (Buckhinghamia celsissima) start flowering across the district. They never fail to produce masses of long creamy lambs tail-like flowers which the bees just love. If you don’t have one in your garden, you won’t regret planting one or two. They are small to medium sized trees, with dense evergreen foliage. They can be pruned to keep them smaller or let grow as a small shady tree. • Once the sweet corn has finished, start to prepare
it for peas and snow pea crops, by digging in some garden lime to raise the pH level in preparation for March/April planting. Chop up the old sweet corn plants and dig them back into the garden as organic matter. A mower with a catcher does a good job of this if you don’t have a mulcher. • Prepare bulb beds and beds for springflowering annuals with deep digging, addition of organic matter and mulching. Start looking in books or on the internet for different spring flowering bulbs you might like to order this month
and plant in autumn. • Citrus trees are heavy feeders and need fertilising now, especially after all this rain. Use a specific citrus fertiliser and apply at the rate on the bag. • Tidy up the strawberry beds. Remove any dead or diseased plants, weed and give them a fertilise. Keep them well watered so they will produce runners for next season. • Fertilise your Camellia sasanqua bushes as the buds appear. Use a special camellia and azalea fertiliser to maintain slightly acidic soil.

• Remove the spent flowering stems of agapanthus. You can collect the seed and grow them yourself if you wish. • Take softwood cuttings of geraniums and pelargonium so that you can strike them and create new plants. • Sow broccoli and cabbage seeds now and raise them for planting in March and April. • It’s important to keep up regular watering of citrus while they are flowering and developing small fruits. • Remove any scale from indoor plants using soapy water and a soft toothbrush.
Plant zinnia, marigold, columbine, linaria, vinca, alyssum, cosmos, petunia, portulaca, salvia, cyclamen, polyanthus, primula, scabiosa, cleome, strawflower, wallflower, begonia, ageratum, lobelia, nigella, viola, celosia, gomphrena, nasturtium, pansy, Iceland poppy, verbena, calendula, snapdragon, cornflower, chrysanthemum, cockscomb, coleus and torenia.

Feeling Fruity with Spencer and Karen Shaw Not only does Forest Heart stock the best range of bush food plants on the Sunshine Coast, we have a great range of fruit trees for your orchard and backyard. We believe a key way that we can reduce our negative impacts on the natural environment is by not only returning local native plants to our gardens, farms and the wider landscape but also taking responsibility for some of our own food production and that’s where some exotic fruit and nut trees can help! Exotic Fruit trees we currently have in-stock include Avocado’s, Citrus, Banana, Pomegranate, Blueberry, Subtropical Apples to name a few. Bush food must haves that you should plant in your yard include: Midyim (Austromyrtus dulcis) a great low growing shrub/groundcover; Riberry Syzygium luehmannii (pictured) tastes good raw and even better glaced in a sugar syrup; Davidson Plums (Davidsonia spp.) although not strictly local, are spectacular foliage specimens with their large leaves and large beautiful looking sour plum like fruit; Plum Pine (Podocarpus elatus) also produce a juicy succulent, plum like fruit with a pleasant pine taste and again, fantastic for jams and syrups. Grow and enjoy the taste of your own fruit, nuts and bush foods.
