The annual Maleny Youth Festival is back for its sixth year, with the fun filled youth-oriented event on this Friday, November 1 at the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre, from 3-9pm. Proudly supported by Sunshine Coast Council, the Maleny Neighbourhood Centre and Boab Dreaming Solutions, this year’s festival will also celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Maleny Flexi School.
Event organiser Lyndal Regent said that students at the Maleny Flexi School had once again been instrumental in developing the festival theme, concept and direction. The event will feature bands and local musicians, stalls, food and fun interactive youth workshops. The festival theme chosen for this year was the eye-catching Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead).
While she acknowledged that popular imagery used in the traditional Mexican celebration permeates youth culture, it was the deeper meaning of remembering and honouring all that has gone before, all that is and all that will be that exemplified this year’s celebration.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for us to recognise former students, staff and volunteers who have been involved with the Maleny Flexi School over the past 20 years, and to acknowledge their incredible contribution to its success,” Lyndal said.
The entertainment line-up will feature a strong youth focus as well as workshops, stalls and heaps of tastebud tingling food vendors. Performances include live entertainment from Sammalen, Eithnee, Heartspace Dance Company, The Undecided, The Fence Sitters, Lineage, Nordic Flux and more. Crowd favourite, Rob Longstaff, will headline and the event promises to be an eclectic and entertaining showcase of the creative talents of young people in our community.
