his week we have our annual ‘Reno Guide’ included in the paper – so there has been plenty of discussion about my ‘reno wishlist’ for our house.

Because I have a mild addiction to the ABC television show ‘Grand Designs’ it doesn’t take much to get me thinking about how I could transform the house.

This is amazing, after the crazy amount of work that went into renovating the entire house that is now our office at Glass House Mountains just a few years ago.

That is the kind of project that takes over your life - I think the trick is not renovating the whole house – maybe just tackling one project at a time.

Enjoy the views from Ngungun National Parks Minister Steve Dickson and Member for Glass House Andrew Powell have officially re-opened the Sunshine Coast’s newest walking track, Mt Ngungun’s popular summit walk.

Mr Dickson said the $155, 000 Glass House Mountains National Park upgrade meant visitors would be safer and enjoy even better views of the region.

“Mt Ngungun already welcomes around 32,000 visitors a year and the track realignment, new information signage and viewing points will ensure even more people experience the spectacular views of the Glass House Mountain peaks, as well as the forests, farmland and waterways of the Sunshine Coast.”

Mr Powell said the Glass House Mountains, including Mount Ngungun, held special significance to the local Aboriginal people, who were consulted on the project.

“Mt Ngungun is also very popular with climbers and abseilers, especially schools and the trail reconstruction was done in consultation with commercial operators and climbing representatives,” Mr Powell said.

“The work involved building rock steps, drains, retaining walls, two viewing areas and seating, installing timber handrails and new signs, closing off the old track and revegetation.”

A further $41,000 will also be spent this financial year installing more interpretive signs and better facilities at the trail head and investigating more climbing options.

Mr Powell reminded visitors the return walk, including time to enjoy the views, takes about two hours.

“While the gradient is fairly easy, remember to wear walking shoes, not thongs or sandals, take water, and keep a close eye on children,” he said.

Reaching the Pinnacle Proudly, on July 6, Tibrogargan Masonic Lodge members, along with approximately 650 fellow Freemason’s from across Australasia and beyond, had the pleasure of witnessing one of their numbers, Dr Gary John Bacon, reach the pinnacle of Masonic endeavours.

He was installed into the Chair of Grand Master, United Grand Lodge of Queensland. A most memorable event and a momentous achievement for a member of a country lodge.

Tibrogargan Masonic Lodge commenced activities in 1923 with the first meetings being held in the ‘long gone’ Beerburrum Methodist Church.

After the initial period in the Beerburrum area, a new Lodge was erected in Beerwah on land donated by the Simpson family. This is now the site of the Woolworths complex.

Although Tibrogargan Lodge now meets in the Caboolture Masonic Complex, its historic linkage with ‘Glasshouse Country’ remains strong through the presence of members and charitable benevolence.

Dr Gary Bacon, proposed into Tibrogargan Lodge by the late Alan Free and Jack Colley in 1973, has progressed through the various Offices, both within Tibrogargan Lodge and the Grand Lodge of Queensland situated in Ann Street, Brisbane.

Gary’s presence in the Beerwah area came about through his professional position as a Research Scientist /Forester in the Forestry Department working out of the once thriving community, the Forest Research and Seed Centre, situated on Roys Road east of the township.

On leaving Beerwah, Gary transferred throughout Queensland with the Forestry Department culminating in being appointed Executive Director of Forestry Queensland.

Simpson Street start nears

The near-$5 million project to rebuild the main street of Beerwah kicked off last week, with Council staff marking out the location of underground services.

Project Co-ordinator Adam Stewart said that people will have noticed the markings on the pavement.

“These are locating the underground services so that when the civil works commence, staff know what’s underground before they start digging.

“Next week the site office should be setting up, with operational works commencing the week after – weather permitting,” he said.

The project was just one of the big ticket budget items that Council announced for the Glasshouse Country region.

Others include the retiling of the Beerwah pool, a large allocation for Bankfoot House, money to complete the playground at Skippy Park, and over $2 million for works on Roys Road.

But, ratepayers should be aware that there are lots of other smaller projects planned to happen in the streets and parks near where we all live.

Some of these include: • $47,000 for playground equipment, shelter and furniture renewal in Tibrogargan Park, Beerburrum • $384,00 to replace a wooden bridge on Roys Road, Beerwah • $30,000 for renewing a footbridge on Peachester Road, Beerwah

Artists impression • $175,000 for road works at the entry into Skippy park, Landsborough • $525,000 for a bridge and culvert renewal on Myla Road, Landsborough Divisional 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said that each Council Division also receives allocations for smaller operational projects for parks, pathways and minor emergent works.

“There is an allocation of $100,000 for works in parks, $100,000 for pathways and $75,000 to cover any emergent issues,” he said.

“Council has a long list of projects which fall under these funding allocations that have been identified by the community and Council staff, and we work through the list of these smaller projects depending upon their priority for completion.”

So even though you will be seeing the larger, more substantial projects being regularly reported in GCNews, there are many smaller – but just as important – things being done to make sure communities are looked after by Council.

Australia Zoo’s very own wildlife warrior, Bindi Irwin celebrated her 15th birthday last week with a Return to Nim’s Island-themed birthday bash!

The Zoo was transformed in to a beach adventure playground, filled with entertaining activities including hula-dancing workshops, a mechanical surfboard and laser tag.

Birthday girl, Bindi, was excited to be turning 15 after what can only be described as an epic year!

Bush seat a fitting memorial Late last year Glasshouse Country Menshed Inc was approached by the June Canavan Foundation to build a ‘bush seat’ as a memorial to the late Dr June Canavan who was killed in an air crash in August 2009 in New Guinea. Glasshouse Country Menshed Inc were only too pleased to take on the task.

The task was not without its challenges. Obtaining suitable seasoned timber was one of them. The men ended up purchasing unseasoned timber and placing it in storage until the moisture content had reduced to a level suitable for working.

The seat was built by Menshed members, Andrew (Andy) Henry and Brad Miller did the cutting, fitting and sealing. Bob McLean was project coordinator who sourced the blackbutt timber planks from the Peachester Sawmill, stripped clamped for drying for five months, coordinated the dressing of timber, delivery of the finished product to Australia Zoo and then collected the cheque.

The finished seat was unveiled on Sunday, June 16 overlooking The African Safari section

Local running enthusiasts Brett Standring and Alun Davies just love running.

And they want to make sure that the fantastic experience of trail running – as opposed to track or road running – is easy for anyone to enjoy, no matter what their level of fitness or experience.

Brett, who also owns and operates Crookneck Retreat on Old Gympie Road, Glass House Mountains knows firsthand the joy of running through our local bushland.

“Alun and I have been running in trail events for quite a few years, and we know how wonderful it is,” Brett said.

“We both wanted to organise some local events so that people could see what a great place we live in – so we started Run Queensland.”

And to kick off their mission, they’ve organised ‘Wildhorse at Night’ on August 10 at Wildhorse Mountain.

This is a night-time run, starting at 6.00pm, aimed at walkers, runners, families, training groups, health and fitness enthusiasts, sporting clubs or just anyone who loves the outdoors.

Runners wear head lamps and the tracks are clearly marked out so you can easily find your way around, with marshals on hand to help.

Brett says the unique event – the first for Run Queensland – is just the start of their plans.

“We’re preparing a range of events from funruns to ultra marathons, including the Wildhorse Criterium next Easter – which is a series of races from 10km up to 70km long.

The Wildhorse at Night event already has over 100 people registered to participate, and they have a field limit of around 200, so there will be lots of people on the course all at the same time.

“Entrants will receive a voucher for two free editions of Runners World magazine (valued at $16.00) and a personalised race number bib if they book by Sunday, August 3.

“We’re also providing a light meal after the run and a coffee van will be on hand.

“We really want the event to be a safe family friendly social night,” Brett said.

New events at Charity Sports This year’s Beerwah Charity Sports Day will be held on Saturday, August 24 at the Beerwah Sportsground and will feature some terrific new attractions.

Beerburrum resident, strongman Tim O’Shea, will be there with three other contestants, competing in a range of strength tests. The competition will cover four different tasks with points allocated for each, so that a winner will be found at the end of the competition. The events will take place between 11.00am and 2.00pm, so come prepared to be amazed at the weights these contestants can lift and carry.

The ‘Show and Shine’ event is on again to cater for those wanting to show their vehicle whether it be a sedan, a ute, a hot-rod, or a street car.

There will be classes for all vehicles in 17 categories plus People’s Choice, with trophies for winners of categories. So polish up your car and enter it on the day. Enquiries to Brian Moffat on 0428 711 357.

The photography competition is also underway with a total of eight classes, all with excellent prizes. As usual, a large turnout of horses is expected for a wide range of classes and events suited for under 8s right through to adults. Among the many activities for children are novelty athletics, face painting and a pet parade.

Sid the Seagull will be handing out free sample bags and the Australia Zoo Croc Cruiser will be organising activities.

You won’t go hungry either, as there will be a barbeque lunch and dinner, sandwiches, tea, coffee and cold drinks etc.

There will be all the usual stalls, including luscious home-made cakes, jams and chutneys; plenty of The Morris Dancers will fresh local produce perform at this year's event and those wonderful strawberry pavlovas will be there to indulge in.

The Ragged Band Morris Dancers will appear this year to frighten the horses, and everyone else, with traditional English Morris mayhem. With tatter coats and bells on their legs they will be one of the noisier acts at this year’s Sports Day. Adding to the entertainment will be Yvonne Barlow-Turner, Mike Turner and his band ‘The Superdads’ along with several student bands from Beerwah High.

So make it a day for the whole family and remember all proceeds go to Cancer Council Queensland.

Contributed by Una Robinson Heartfelt thanks go to the community as a whole for their continued support to Beerwah Lions Service Club projects. This club has been serving the community since its charter in 1967.

Lions give many volunteer hours to assist other charities and those in need such as: 2013 Charity Sports day on August 24 which will see very long Lions club volunteer hours spent on cooking, serving, food and stewarding, the annual photo comp in support of the Cancer Council QLD; The Beerwah State school Big night out work, and there are others.

Fundraising to support charity is managed by the monthly Recycled Cans project, two Lions Ladies street stalls, markets, barbeques, sale of Lions Xmas cakes, with the major fundraiser, the annual Glasshouse Business Directory.

The Charity Sports Photo competition entry forms and entry condition forms are available for download from the Beerwah Lions Club Facebook page. There is $800.00 in prize value over eight different categories with all prizes having been generously donated by various individuals and business establishments.

Lions service clubs, unlike many other so called charity organisations give 100% of all profits raised from the community back to their community projects with no administration being financed. Lions membership fees cover insurances and help with the club administration.

During the past 12 months financial support has been given to the following local and Lions charities: Lions Drug Awareness – Help to youth, Safe partying, alcohol use etc, Beerwah High School for two student bursaries, Scouts Queensland, Lions Youth of the Year – Youth project conducted annually locally, Lions Childhood Cancer Foundation, Lions Eye health program, Cancer Council Queensland – support to 2013 Charity Sports photo competiton, CWA Beerwah, Beerwah High School Chaplaincy, local Fire Brigade, and Beerwah State School.

Glasshouse Country View Club On Wednesday, July 3 about 20 of our members caught an early train to Brisbane to see the sights of the Brisbane City Hall makeover. Nobody was disappointed with what they saw. They were taken on a guided tour and those who wished to go to the bell tower, took the lift to see the view.

After the tour and many questions answered by the tour guide, most of the ladies headed to the Red Cross coffee shop for lunch and then continued their return journey home. The décor of the City Hall was amazing, from the staircase to the skylights and the organ pipes. It was a sight to see.

The Landsborough kindy children have been doing their bit for the environment and last week they participated in National Tree Day. Bunnings Caloundra supported their initiative by donating some trees as well as soil and mulch for the kindy garden. Staff member Howard Montgomery came along on the day to lend a hand with the planting.

It was a team effort as all of the kindy children helped to dig the holes and plant the trees which they will now care for over the remainder of their kindy year.

They have also been looking at recycling and caring for the environment.

An experiment has been set up with three buckets to observe the breakdown of waste products: food scraps, plastic and paper. The children use spray bottles to water these buckets and keep the soil damp, just like rain.

Over the coming months they can observe which products breakdown and which don't.

Kindy Director Alison Marks said, "learning about what's good for the environment, that's what we are hoping the kids get out of National Tree Day." The kindy wishes to thank Bunnings Caloundra for their donations and a special thank you to Howard for personally coming along on the day to help with the planting.

National reading winner at GCCC At the end of last term Glasshouse Country Christian College celebrated the achievements of Madison Long, Lilli Jameljanenko and Kaylee Utting who were worthy winners of the Read More in May competition.

However, this week the College learned that Kaylee Utting’s family was one of the top 10 families to record the highest number of reading minutes in the whole of Australia. The Utting family read an amazing 27,900 minutes during May and came in 7th place.

Kaylee who is in Year 11 at GCCC, won a $150.00 Scholastic voucher for her family to enjoy. What a wonderful surprise for a family who obviously love to read.

Green waste cost increases

I am writing in response to the article in the July 31 edition of GCNews re: green waste cost increases.

On June 27, I went to the Beerwah Transfer/ Recycling Station with a standard ute and a standard 4x4 trailer, full of green waste, for which I was charged $12.00 in fees. This is what I have been paying for all the previous trips to the Transfer/ Recycling Station, and this amount I have found to be totally acceptable.

However on July 6, I again went to the Beerwah Transfer / Recycling Station, and was charged $30.00 for a lesser size load than I took previously, which is an increase of over 100%. This I find totally unacceptable.

I have a son who lives in the Moreton Shire, and he can go to his council tip for free, as can my younger son who lives in the Caboolture Shire.

I have since discovered by talking to people around town, that our council fees are considerably higher than those in the Bundaberg and Maryborough areas. However that is only hearsay. I don’t know for sure if that is totally true, but it raises an interesting question.

The comment that previously council charged customers for mulch, however it is now free is nothing more than a smoke screen.

Do they think we came down in the last shower? It’s just like the TV commercials that say, ‘Buy One, Get One Free’ I would suggest that if they are giving you one item free, the cost of the first item is inflated.

Previously I was employed in the retail industry, and I can tell you without any doubt, there is no such thing as ‘free’. If that were the case, companies would be going broke all over the country.

I am a 68-year-old pensioner, and have been a ratepayer in the Sunshine Coast for the past 43 years. And I can assure council that ‘we the people’ will hold them accountable.

It is the humble opinion of this ratepayer, that if our current council continues down this path of ridiculous fee increases like this, they just might find themselves out of a job come the next elections.

I wish people would stop referring to Beerwah as a ‘coastal village’. We’re no more coastal than Mt Kosciusko. We’re a village in the country and we’re part of Glasshouse Country.

The Glass House Mountains gaze over us and we can boast of beautiful bushy areas, creeks and forests.

We should be proud of our part of the world!

As a NSW born and raised Queenslander, I barrack of course for the Blues in the annual State of Origin matches. However, I have to acknowledge that Queensland’s eight consecutive series wins are well deserved. There have been some close results, but the Maroons are clearly the better team, and have been for the past eight years.

As far as I can determine, the record winning streak for major interstate team sports in Australia is nine consecutive Sheffield Shield Wins to NSW from 1953/4 to 1961/2.

In my view, the Maroons class and quality will see them equal, then beat, that record streak in the next two series.

The spectacle is causing nightmares for me, and I am sure many other Blues supporters, the possibility of the Maroons winning every series for the next 60 years.

If that were to occur, NSW would equal Queensland’s record of failure to win the Sheffield Shield for 68 years from 1926/7 to 1993/4.

Hardly a hoon

An 84-year-old does not fit the criteria of a 'hoon'.

There was no 'crime' committed, no victim. Hooning and the behaviour that goes with it kills people.

Not going over a number on a sign. Therefore, I believe the fine the old fellow received was in fact unfair and unjust. Damian Petrie should share with the community how he manages to never go over the speed limit - not even by 1km (remembering that every 'K' over is a killer), and considering speedometers can have a variation of up to 10km!

Damian also stated that if there were no speed signs on the stretch of road in question, the driver should have been doing 50km. This is in fact incorrect because if you read the signs, they state: ‘50km in built up areas, unless otherwise signed.’ The section in question is not 'built up'. Definite revenue raising.

A little respect would be nice

Has anyone ever bothered to tell the students from Beerwah High and Glass House State Primary School that swearing in the street is offensive to most people, while spitting in the street is both disgusting and unhealthy?

Yet it is happening every afternoon at the shops in Glass House Mountains. While students are not the only offenders, they are by far the majority. A little respect for others would be nice.

My letter to GCNews of July 10 was in no way intended as a dig at the service provided by Glasshouse Taxi, whose drivers have often gone above and beyond to help me out. But thanks for that information, Keith. Many have asked the same question.

The incident described in my letter has prompted my family and friends to raise money for a wheelchairaccessible-vehicle of my own. Such a vehicle would give me my life back. To reduce those trips to a couple of hours instead of all day would give me back days. To be able to go out with my daughters or friends, to go and look at the sea, to go plant shopping or to get mushroom compost for the garden, to go to places ... In the words of Eliza Dolittle, ‘wouldn't it be loverly’.

I am writing to praise the staff and medical practitioners at Beerwah Medical Centre. We have been visitors to Beerwah for the past two months.

On one occasion we had a relative who was in need of urgent medical attention. Without hesitation he was attended by Dr Shaheed Kamil Moideen.

Tests were done and he was immediately sent by ambulance to Caloundra Hospital for further tests.

I have since required to visit the surgery for treatment. I was attended by Dr Terry Finney. I have found him to be very prompt and thorough with his diagnosis of problems.

I would have no hesitation in recommending this practice to anybody who requires medical treatment.

The residents of Beerwah are very lucky to have such a group of medical practitioners who are willing to attend them at short notice and are very devoted to their cause.

The Glasshouse Country Festival will run from October 18 – 27 and involve numerous community groups and businesses. From Beerburrum to Mooloolah and across to the foothills of the Blackall Range, these groups are all working towards the same goal: to bring the community together and celebrate the arts, sports, environment and cultural heritage of the area with locals and visitors alike.

Bob McLean, Representative of the Rotary Club of Glasshouse Mountains and promoter of the festival, said the festival will highlight the qualities of the region and give an economic boost to the area.

“The Glasshouse Country region is truly unique and worth experiencing it’s surrounding variety of attractions and heritage sites,” he said.

“The community will be drawing on the qualities and beauty of the region as a natural stage to showcase and share local talents and interests.

“The festival will also provide an economic injection to all sectors of the community and will stimulate a welcoming atmosphere to visitors and locals alike.”

The festival will officially open on October 18 in the town of Glass House Mountains with music, arts, crafts stalls and much more entertainment. Over the first weekend of the festival, the celebrations will be alive in Beerwah where, amongst other things, there will be art exhibitions and art auctions. In Mooloolah everyone can enjoy a scenic walk via the Old Train Tunnel connecting the town to Landsborough.

For the youth there will be a skate competition run by the Beerwah and District Youth and Community Centre (BADYACC) and for families, a steam train that journeys through the town of Mooloolah to brunch at Martin Rungert Park.

The second weekend will see the 150th anniversary celebrations for Mooloolah with a day of historical activities. The weekend will also hold a variety of sports events including the Australian rugby league team playing New Zealand at Beerwah sports ground.

Other entertainment and activities will continue throughout the Glasshouse Country region over the festival including a day out in Landsborough, recycling tour, visits to the Heritage Trail Museum, touch football and cricket matches, junior triathlon, photographic exhibitions, fishing competitions, canoeing and more.

More arts, more music and more culture on October 27 at an Aussie style Hangi will mark the end of a glorious 11days of festivities for the community of the Glasshouse Country region and its visitors.

There will be entertainment for young people, families and seniors, as the festival will bring attention to local sites such as the Glass House Mountains, waterways, national parks and forests, Ewen Maddock Dam, heritage trails, sporting facilities and more.

The festival is an opportunity for the community of the Glasshouse Country region to get together and promote its various qualities, says Bob McLean.

“The Glasshouse Country Festival is a community based, not-for-profit event, coordinated by a committee of dedicated local community organisations, individuals and businesses.

“The festival offers local businesses and organisation an opportunity to support this collaborative event and in turn, help raise the profile and growth of our region,” he said.

In honour of Queensland Small Business Week I held a morning tea with some Glasshouse Mountain Business owners to discuss the Government’s Small Business Strategy and Action Plan. The morning tea also provided the opportunity for me to hear first-hand of the challenges being faced by small business operators in the current marketplace and what they see as the future for their industry. What a thrill it was to entertain Minister for Disability Services, Hon Tracy Davis in Glass House recently. The Minister joined me for a tour of Lavally Lodge in Glass House Mountains and she certainly showed she has a marvellous way with people. She charmed the pants off them and I am happy to say everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Recently I have also been to Peachester State School for National Schools Tree Day and opened the Mt Ngungun walking trail with Minister Dickson.

Not any longer. We are now much more aware about not wasting good materials and resources which can easily be recycled and reused.

While not every bit of demolition and construction material can – or even should – be recycled, up to 80% of the waste can be reused or recycled. The key to a successful renovation project is to reuse what you can, and recycle the rest.

If you already have a lot of good quality materials in the structures you’re replacing – such as timber, bricks, fixtures, fittings and even things like bolts, brackets and hinges – there’s no need to destroy them only to purchase and replace them with exactly the same thing.

By doing that you’ll not only save yourself good money by not having to buy new materials, you’ll also drastically reduce the amount of material that needs to go into landfill, meaning you’ll save lots more money in tipping fees.

And if you can separate out the reusable and recyclable materials before taking it all to the local waste station, they’ll be able to take it to be recycled, or remade into something else, or resold in the recycling market.

Either way – by sorting and separating, you’ll drastically reduce what you have to pay to dispose of.

So what types of things should you be sorting and separating?

The Beerwah Resource Recovery centre will take things like lengths of clean usable timber, metals items and objects, reusable kitchen and bathroom fixtures and fittings, tiles and roofing iron, windows, doors and fittings, appliances, clean bricks and tiles, and more.

The best way to work out what you can do is to talk with the staff before you start work. They’ll let you know about what you can bring to them that won’t cost you a cent to drop off. And if you go there on a Saturday, you’ll be able to have a look at their recycle market and get an idea of the things you may be able to buy from them for your building or renovation project.

Remember – all the proceeds from the recycle market go back into our local community groups and organisations as donations and grants from Beerwah Community Recycling.

Talk to friends, neighbours, workmates, check out magazines, go on-line and see what other people have done.

Make sure you explore all the options.

Do up your to-do list for each of the tasks that you need to complete. Prioritise the tasks and the time frames you have to complete them in.

What you see in someone else’s home might not be practical in yours. Building code and council requirements may limit what you can do.

Get two or three quotes from reputable renovators and trades people. Remember the cheapest quote is not necessarily the best. Always add 10 to 15 per cent for unexpected costs.

It can save money, but do you really have the time, the right tools and the skills to do a professional job? Know what tasks have to be done by certified trades people such as plumbers and electricians.

The company and its subcontractors should have proper licences as well as adequate insurance.

Reputable firms won’t hesitate to answer any of your questions.

Always get written contracts describing the work to be done, what it will cost and how payments will be made. Never agree to anything unless it is in writing.

Renovation - it’s no fun living in a work site. Can you move out? If this isn’t possible, ask what kinds of disruptions to expect.

As I write this, the news that the Duchess of Cambridge has given birth to a son has come over the radio. It’s an exciting time for the family. Apparently the first person to be telephoned was the Queen.

The world media has been camped outside the hospital for days waiting for the news. Many will be waiting expectantly for the first pictures of mother and child.

No doubt the Queen will go to visit them in the hospital and all the media will capture her arrival and departure.

The little boy will want for nothing materially and no doubt will receive a lot of love from his parents and the wider family. His will be a life of privilege and scrutinised by the wider community.

Few of us as parents would have wanted that when our children were born. Australia is known as ‘the lucky country’ but there are many of its citizens who are not lucky.

There are babies born that are not wanted by the parents. Some are born with deformities that test the love and care of parents and family. Some are born into poverty and may find it difficult to survive.

Yet each life is important and it is shaped by the family and circumstances it is born into. These can be for good or for bad. The most influential

This is more important than wealth and position.

The right influence can help a young person to rise above difficult circumstances and make a success of their life.

This morning’s news reminds me of a child born over two thousand years ago in very humble circumstances.

He rose above those circumstances to be one of the most influential persons that ever walked on Earth. I refer to Jesus of Nazareth, the founder of the Christian faith. It is clear from what little has been written of his family life that he was really loved and cared for as a young person.

As the newly born prince in England has a destiny, so had Jesus. His was a destiny that is still influencing for good the lives of millions of people today.

Jesus influenced my life for good and no doubt the other writers of this column would say the same thing. It’s available to anyone whatever their circumstances.

The Super Strawberry Competition has been running in conjunction with the Beerwah Charity Sports & Spring Carnival since 1996, and there have been some amazing entries over the years.

The all-time champion so far is Shane Frizzo’s 2006 winning entry which weighed 245 grams.

The photo shows another strawberry which held the record for many years: the 1997 champion grown by Cameron and Mary Lister, and weighing 240 grams.

Contributed by Stephen Pitt On Saturday, July 27 HBC sent a team of three boxers to the Wide Bay Titles in Bundaberg where two were matched for bouts. Leroy MacNamara was matched against a very experienced opponent in Papa Utia from the Bethania Boxing Gym. Leroy boxed very well using good combinations on the inside. As the fight progressed Papa’s experience (he is an Australian representative), began to show, resulting in a points win and Leroy taking Silver in the 60 kg Junior Division.

Jake Molloy stepped up from the 36 to 38 kg Division to box Cian Jones from the Impact Boxing Academy. The fight started at a very fast pace with Cian taking the fight to Jake. Jake weathered the storm to finish the round well. The second round saw Jake find his range and in the third round Jake continued to press forward until the final bell, where he was crowned Wide Bay Champion for 2013.

Taylen Pitt weighed in and although there were two suitable opponents, they unfortunately did not want to fight Taylen for a Championship belt.

Next on the HBC boxing calendar is the Shamrock Tournament at the Sands Tavern on August 3. Come along for a great night of boxing and support your local Hinterland Boxing Club team.

Maleny High student and Peachester local Samantha Grigor (17) was overjoyed to be part of the National Cross Country team that will travel to Tasmania in August, after finishing second at the State Titles in Bundaberg recently.

Samantha will travel with the team to Tasmania in late August where she will experience an Opening and Closing Ceremony, as well as compete in her individual and relay event.

“I was very surprised when I found out I had made the National Team and I am very excited but nervous at the same time about Tasmania,” said Samantha.

We wish Samantha the best of luck in Tasmania.

Gabe O’Sullivan has won the U16 Australian Gymnastics Championship recently in Sydney.

His win was emphatic as his lead over the other contenders in the championship was over seven points which for gymnastics is very significant.

All together he cleaned up with five gold medals and one silver.

Like other gymnasts his age he trains six days a week, morning and afternoon, for up to 26 hours a week. He is extremely disciplined, also managing a Year 11 workload of six subjects.

Because he did so well at the national championships, he is now being considered to train for and compete at the international Pacific Rim Championship.

If he does well in this event, he will be selected to compete at the Youth Olympics in 2014 and the Commonwealth Games 2014.

Gabe lived in Peachester for all his Primary School years.

Beerwah Ladies Golf

Contributed by Jenny Kelly Even though the course was a bit on the wet side, the sun shone and we had a nice day for golf. Forty eight players competed in a Single Stroke event for trophies kindly donated by Pasta D'Vine and Ruth Parish. Our Captain Lea Garner came in with the best score of the day, carding a 71 Nett to take out the Division 1 trophy, closely followed by Cathy Stone who came in with a 72 Nett. Division 2 was won by Jackie Collinson with a 75 Nett, followed

by Lyn Steele on 76 Nett. NTP's were Lea on number 2, Sharon Phillips on 5, Mavis Brimelow on 16 and Pam Gormley took out the 18th. The Ball Rundown went to 78 Nett. Hopefully the wet conditions will improve and we will get some quality golf time soon. Until then, stay safe and good golfing.
