Hi Everyone In recent weeks we’ve been following the issue of poor service and reception issues for Telstra customers in the local area extending from Landsborough to Glass House. This week, we’ve received advice from Telstra’s Sunshine Coast area manager Kris Carver that reception issues should be resolved, following the completion of work to the main tower. He said customers should find that their mobile coverage is now back to where it was, he wasn’t however able to comment on broadband. We are still waiting for confirmation on this and will advise you when we know. I guess we will let all you readers be the judge – I am not able to judge as I have never been able to get any reception from our office in Glass House (even with my blue tick rural phone).

Mr Karver has urged those customers whose reception hasn’t improved to contact Telstra Country Wide Sunshine Coast on 1800 687 829 or email: sctcw@ team.telstra.com, or alternatively drop into one of their stores on the Sunshine Coast, located at Caloundra, Kawana, Maroochydore, Morayfield and Bribie Island. So as we don’t have an edition next week (yes we do take an Easter holiday at GCNews) I hope everyone has a very ‘Hoppy Easter’ and I look forward to hearing all about your phones after the holidays! Regards,

They may not be as cute and cuddly as the Easter bunny, but there is something equally as endearing about the humble Alpaca. Especially month old Cassiopeia, who this week graces our cover in the lead up to Easter.

Last week we had the wonderful opportunity to meet Cassiopeia and her mother and aunts at ‘Las Nubes’, the alpaca farm owned by a Beerwah local, Kylie Tsangaris, and her family. It took Kylie, who also operates local dog walking business Paws Luv Walks, only a matter of weeks to fall in love with her pet alpacas and decide she wanted to expand her brood, and breed them. Last month, she welcomed little Cassiopeia to the brood, and is eagerly awaiting the birth of another ‘cria’ (baby alpaca) any day. Alpacas are best known for their fleece, which is second in its quality and softness only to silk, but according to Kylie, that is only the start of the many benefits of the shy, unassuming animals. For her, it was the fact that the alpacas could keep the grass in check on her Fraser Road property, as well as their good nature around children. An avid wildlife lover, who hosts an annual community camp out on her property to raise funds for the Wildlife Hospital at Australia Zoo, said she was also drawn to the animal because it’s not bred for its meat, only for its fleece.

RED BROWN & BLACK ASPHALT Call Josef 5478 9834 Mob 0402 932 159

Kylie and Diamond Dancer Kylie said they are also a popular choice for farmers, who find them valuable guardians of their sheep herds. And while it will be a while before Kylie has any alpacas available for sale as pets, she recommends Sunshine Coast breeders Cristin and Graeme Smith of Samakien Alpacas (www. samakien.com.au) who have been breeding suri alpacas here on the coast since 1999. Let’s just hope they don’t scare off the Easter Bunny as it makes its journey through the hinterland this weekend!

When it came to putting together his 12th publication, local author and internationally recognised expert Dr Graeme Quick certainly was quick to add a bit of colour and humour into his latest offering. The author, whose earlier works have all been technical or historical publications, took great joy in putting together a collection of tales from around the country that share but one common character, the humble tractor. After 50 years in the farming machinery industry, many of which was spent overseas, Graeme has more than a tale or two to tell. ‘Tall but True Tractor Tales’ is the first in a series of two books that Graeme has penned in an effort to capture some of what has been a very colourful adventure for this international expert who today calls Peachester home. From the story of Rotten Robbie, who had amassed a collection of coins that he kept under his bed to purchase himself a tractor, to the story of another well-known local, Nev Anning, who as a prisoner of war was forced to endure hard physical labour in constructing a Japanese shrine before a tractor saved the day, Graeme is quick to point out all but one of the 50 tales in the book have at least some basis in fact. Illustrated with clever cartoons drawn by Graeme and an impressive collection of photos, the book is certain to be a hit with anyone for a passion for a good old yarn!

It is available to purchase for $29.95 from selected booksellers and the Beerwah Newsagency.

Lady Throat Killers take to the stage for youth concert

Following a fantastic response to last week’s announcement of the upcoming youth music event, Local Young Live, we can now reveal the headline act. The Lady Throat Killers, a popular hip hop band based on the Sunshine Coast, is set to get the crowd moving when they perform at the drug and alcohol free event at the Beerwah Community Hall on Friday, April 20. Holly Aston of the Hinterland Community Development Association said there had been a lot of interest and excitement in the event, with a number of acts registering to perform. “Based on the response so far, it looks set to be a real crowd pleaser,” Holly said. Registrations must be received no later than April 10 for those individuals or bands who would like to perform on the night. You can register via the facebook page at local.young. live or email Local.Young. Live@gmail.com. Tickets, $5.00 each, will be available at the door on the night, and there are only 300 available. The event will run from 4.00pm 9.00pm, and security will be provided thanks to the generous support of Community Recycling.

Margaret’s Mblori mission Margaret Briggs is busily preparing herself for what she knows will be a life changing experience when she travels to Africa to see how her efforts have improved the lives of the villagers of Mblori next month.

Margaret, who is halfway to her current fundraising goal of $5,000, said it costs only $10.00 to purchase one mosquito net, which can protect a whole family against the insects that carry the malaria virus. The next project is to raise enough money for the village, which has no running water or electricity, and to dig pit latrines for 200 of the villagers’ homes. Margaret said locals who are keen to support her fundraising efforts for the Mblori village can purchase the Wort Organics drinks from her at the markets, or alternatively give her a call on 0411 073 822, to make a donation. Wort Organics is a Queensland company which uses locally grown produce to create its refreshing ginger and lemon myrtle range of beverages, and can be also purchased from Beerwah Health Foods in Simpson Street.

“I’m bracing myself for what I will see when I get there,” said an excited but equally anxious Margaret, who is well aware of the poverty that awaits her. The last time GCNews spoke to Margaret she had successfully raised enough money, through the support of the local community, to purchase life saving mosquito nets to help protect the residents of the small Kenyan village from their biggest killer, malaria. As her ongoing fundraising efforts continue, she is also preparing to see firsthand how much of a benefit the mosquito nets have had on the lives of the villagers, many of whom are children. “It’s a wonderful feeling to know you have been able to help save lives, and I want to bring back some of the stories to share with the community who have been so supportive with my fundraising efforts,” Margaret said. Since her last major fundraising effort, Margaret has been busy selling Wort’s Organic drinks at local markets, dedicating all her profits towards the cause. Margaret Briggs at her market stall

True CommitmentWorking for You This region is growing fast and we need a person we can trust to look after our children‛s needs and family requirements in our community. Tourists bring in money so let‛s also cater for them. My vote goes to Ann Ross, a proven worker in our area for many years. Ann will never let us down because she never has before. Peter Farrell (Rotarian PHF) Glass House Resident I have known Ann and Jeff Ross since moving to Beerburrum eleven years ago. Ann and her husband Jeff have worked and supported the RV program (Caravan and Motorhome) since 2006. Ann has devoted a great deal of time and energy to this project for the long-term development and benefit of our local communities. Her support for RV projects has also been well recorded in newsprint. Ann has initiated several local community projects. She was responsible for state heritage listing of Beerburrum Memorial Trees, and recently produced a book on their history. She also initiated installation of the historical signage around Beerburrum. And, last but not least, she has a lovely family. Both Ann and Jeff are well-respected business owners. Ann has always shown a great community spirit. Patricia and John Jutila, Beerburrum Residents

Holiday surprise at Glass House Mountains State School The kids at Glass House Mountains State School are set for a surprise when the holidays are over, unless they are reading this article of course. The world is being put together for them by the talented Taffy Watkins, Brad Miller and Andy Henry who are part of the Glasshouse Country Menshed. The gentlemen from the Menshed are designing and making a massive wooden world map puzzle complete with the migration trail of the whales for the under covered area at GHMSS. Bob McLean the Menshed organiser said that the Glasshouse Country Menshed is a local community group that gives talented and crafty gentlemen somewhere to go to display, share,

learn, practice and communicate their ideas. Anybody interested in joining this group please call Bob McLean on 0427 606 240. The Glasshouse Country Menshed is always looking for donations of tools, equipment and resources. On behalf of Glass House Mountains State School we would like to thank the Menshed for actively being involved in enriching the lives of our students and would like to invite other community minded organisations to come forward and share their time and skills here at Glass House Mountains State School. For details contact the school on 5493 2222 and leave a message at the office for Lyn Granger.

Support-A-Reader

Contributed by Margaret Grambauer, support teacher literacy and numeracy

The Support-A-Reader Program at Beerwah State School is strongly supported by our learning community. Teachers and students value and

appreciate the dedication of an increasing pool of volunteer tutors. On Tuesday, March 13, 20 people attended the tutor training at the school. Many have volunteered their time to work with students at the school on a weekly basis. Many of the tutors trained last year are still volunteering to work with our students and find it rewarding both to them and the students. We also appreciate the support of parents, carers and grandparents who spend time reading with children. It is likely that we will hold another tutor training session in term three. If you have time and are interested in attending training please watch for the training information in the school newsletter or local newspapers later in the year.

Peachester State School students have been busy weeding and planting vegetables in their garden lessons as part of the new Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Project which the school has launched this year. The Year 4 to 7 students have also been learning about the importance of soil, doing pH tests and cleaning out the garden, ready to build new garden beds. The plans for a new purpose built kitchen are progressing nicely and when finished the students will begin cooking lessons utilising vegetables grown from their own garden. Thank you very much to all the people who attended the Kitchen Garden Community meeting, the support and enthusiasm for the project was fantastic. A huge thanks also goes to Mr Andy Gray (future school dad) for all his work on the kitchen plans, Harris Plumbing Supplies and Savage Landscaping from Landsborough, Andersens Caloundra, The Green Light Café from Peachester, and Peachester Horticulture society for their kind donations. Thank you also to the many school families who have also donated their time. Your efforts are much appreciated. Peachester State School is very proud to have the opportunity to provide its students with an opportunity to learn and develop in such an exciting program. Peachester State School is the small school that makes a BIG difference.

Mooloolah students put pen to paper Contributed by Danika Tietze and Hunter Gordon (Year 7 students) On Wednesday, March 14, Peter Hendicott, a professor of optometry at the School of Optometry in Brisbane, came to Mooloolah State School with four of his fourth year students, Anthony, Anna, Hannah and Rachel, to screen the children from Prep, Year 1 and Year 2. Two students from Mooloolah, Danika and Hunter, interviewed the visitors. We found out that the students had been studying for three whole years and this year was their fourth. They only have one more year and then they can become professional optometrists. The students think that screening kids is important because if children are not doing well at school it’s sometimes not because they’re not trying. It’s because sometimes their vision is a bit down and it’s important to find that out because a simple pair of glasses can help you do a lot better at school.

School leaders receive badges

Contributed by Jesse Gordon (Year 7 student)

On Thursday, February 23, 11 Year 7 students were presented with their leadership badges and roles. All the students had listened to a speech about leadership roles and responsibilities on parade.

Firstly, the school sang the Australian National Anthem and then the school song. Then the school leaders’ parents, presented Kirby Hume and Danika Tietze their leadership badges. The student leaders were then handed their leaders pledge and contract. This was followed by the presentation of the badges for the school representative councillors, the presentations for the house captains and then an invitation to the parents to sign the contract of leadership with their child, followed by the conclusion of the ceremony.

Ear Testing With Nicole Weeks Contributed by Kirby Hume and Jesse Gordon (Year 7 students)

On Wednesday, March 14, Nicole Weeks, who is a child health nurse specialising in ear testing came to Mooloolah State School to screen all the indigenous children’s ears to see if their hearing is up to speed. She had a lot of kids that she had to test. Nicole started at 9.00am with her first patient. She had a big machine and when she pressed a button it made a noise and the noise went through to the headphones and so the person who had the headphones on could respond. We asked her some questions including ‘What is your name?’, ‘What is your job?’, ‘How long have you been doing your job for?’, ‘Do you like your job?’, ‘Why is it important to get your hearing tested?’ Nicole told us she is a child health care person who specialises in ear testing, and she has been part of the child health care corporation for 15 years and doing ear testing for aboriginal children for three years. She said she loves to help younger children, and she is part indigenous. She said it was important to get your hearing tested because when you are little you have to learn your mum and dad’s voice but if you cannot hear then you can’t learn at school or you might not hear a fire alarm, so that is why it is important to get your hearing tested.

Browsing Beerwah A focus on Beerwah

Focus groups have begun the challenging, but exciting work to turn the people of Beerwah’s ideas into action. Council started comprehensive community engagement with the town last year to help develop an even brighter future in Beerwah. To find out what the people of Beerwah said you can go to council’s PLACE+ Beerwah webpage http://www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/sitePage. cfm?code=beerwah-place. You can see a copy of the latest newsletter on the town’s noticeboards or pick up one at the Beerwah Library or post office. The information from the community engagement has now been divided into themes: Robust Economy, business, trade, industry and jobs Ecological sustainability, ecological preservation and development of natural and built environment Innovation and Creativity, arts and culture, programs, events and activities Health and Wellbeing, safety, security, health and wellbeing

Social Cohesion, community spirit, civic heart, inclusive spaces Accessibility and Connectedness, community connection and access Managing growth, services and assets meeting community needs Great Governance, transparency, engagement and partnerships A focus group has been assigned to each category to work on recommendations for the draft Action Plan which will go to the people of Beerwah by June. All this work is part of Council’s PLACE+ program, which is all about creating the Sunshine Coast’s future. It focuses on Council and communities working together to make great places on the Sunshine Coast even better. Beerwah is the first place to benefit from this program, which covers a range of issues including infrastructure, business and community development.

About Town with Lea Parkes As usual when you go for a wander around Beerwah you will see quite a few changes happening. One renovation that is in full swing is King Tobin Lawyers new offices at Turner Park (across the road from the entrance to the Beerwah Marketplace), after being located upstairs on Simpson Street for the past 28 years I am sure their customers will love their ‘New and Shiny’ office. With an Easter deadline looming there has been plenty of tradies under the pump working on the Beerwah Hotel’s new TAB, the former verandah area next to the public bar is being transformed and the smoking area out the front of the bar is being extended.

Another fashionable change is for Icon Boutique - they now have a new owner with a familiar face, employee and long time local Margaret Ross. For those who know and love Jo Rosenlund, she will keep working in the store, and you can continue to see the great range of well priced clothes and accessories Icon Boutique are known for. Congratulations also to Beerwah business woman Vicki Heading and her team at Beerwah Hair and Beauty, who just took out the Members Choice Bartercard award on the Sunshine Coast. A great achievement, given the number of participating businesses across the coast.

Discount desexing campaign underway Cat owners are sure to look like the cat who got the canary when they snap up the massive discount on offer in the Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge (SCARS) ‘De-Sex in the City’ campaign. Don’t miss out on one of 500 $49.00 cat de-sexing vouchers available from April 2 at the animal refuge. This year Supa IGA Maleny is the main ‘De-Sex in the City’ campaign sponsor and more than 20 vets throughout the Sunshine Coast are generously participating. “The de-sexing vouchers represent an approximate 50 per cent discount for a male cat, and an approximate 75 per cent discount for a female cat, on their normal rates. The vouchers will be available between Tuesday and Saturday 9.00am to 4.00pm, and Sunday 10.00am to 2.00pm from April 2 at SCARS, 28 Sippy Creek Road, Tanawha. Rosalie Symons from SCARS said participating residents were also encouraged to visit the lovely cats and dogs housed at the refuge when they purchased their de-sexing vouchers. “SCARS can house approximately 70 dogs and 50 cats at any given time. We accept cats and dogs from the Sunshine Coast Council Pound after owners cannot be traced, and from private surrenders,” she said.

www.gcnews.com.au

“If you think you might be able to provide a loving home for one or more of these lovely animals, why not pop in and say hello.” Ms Symons said a huge thank you must be given to the wonderful vets who had generously agreed to participate in the campaign. “Once you have purchased your voucher, please assist the vets as much as possible by contacting them early, working within their schedule, advising them that you are a voucher holder, and presenting your cat for the procedure in a healthy condition,” she said. “Each vet will have a slightly different preoperation routine, so please contact them and they will advise you of their requirements. “While booked in for the operation, it may be advantageous for you to discuss microchipping, worming and vaccinations. Your support of these vets with the ongoing health and care of your pet will also help acknowledge their contribution.” Locally, you can use your voucher at the Mooloolah Veterinary Surgery, 3/1 Mooloolah Connection Road, Mooloolah, phone 5492 9510. For further information about this campaign visit SCARS website at www.sippycreek.com.au The Sunshine Coast Pet Partnership Group comprises a number of key animal welfare organisations, vets and councils. Committee members include SCARS, 4Paws, RSPCA, The Australian Veterinary Association, Moreton Bay Regional Council and Sunshine Coast Council. The group meets quarterly and works together to educate and encourage responsible pet ownership across the region.

If you have been on an ADSL plan for over 2 years (and in some circumstances even just 12 months) and you haven’t been offered more service for less cost, then you should read on. The competition to sell Broadband is pretty hot. The prices for some budget plans have come way down. We have helped several clients who have challenged their providers to get a faster plan and pay less for it. This isn’t restricted to ADSL but includes wireless broadband as well. Give your ISP (Internet Service Provider) a call and see if they can’t offer you a better deal than you presently get. You can change providers quite painlessly these days, so don’t feel like you’re stuck. Finally, here’s a reminder for those of you out there with a wireless router. Make sure your router broadcast is secured; you don’t want your download for the month to disappear into someone else’s computer. For more of this and other free advice, check out our website at www.mooloolahpc.com.au. For assistance with any computer inquiries or problems, phone Gus Gillespie of Mooloolah Computers, your true local computer help, on 0405 125 662. We are not a shop, we come to you!

Why it’s best to shop local

Is 2012 your year? (cont’d...)

If you go over to the coast and purchase a new computer system from any one of the larger retail stores – yes, you might get a cheaper price. However, in all likelihood, you won’t get:

Welcome back to our discussion of how to get the most out of your business website. Today we continue with our top tips:

Advice from a computer technician - Typically you would be talking to a salesperson. These sales people may not have a technical background. In many cases, they will be working on commission which means they may be trying to sell you anything they can.

One of the most common questions I am asked by business owners in the process of putting together a website is “who should I link to?” People seem to be under the impression that they will rank first in Google if they can link to a bunch of other good sites. Unfortunately this is not the case. By linking to other sites you are effectively saying that they are more important than you. You are telling people: “I don’t have the answers but go and look at these websites.”

Data transferred from the old to new computer – simply because the bigger chain stores don’t offer this service. Our customers can have their old data transferred onto a new computer including emails, documents and more. You may not get the latest hardware – often the chain stores can sell computers very cheap because they are superseded models that are being run out. If having the very latest in hardware is important to you, it’s best to talk to a specialist. You won’t get a PC that’s custom built to your requirements – if you are into gaming, graphic design, photo or video editing or anything similar then you will have some fairly specific requirements from your computer. You need to be sure that you are spending your hard earned dollars on a computer that will perform. A custom built system will be a safer bet for your sort of needs. These are just a few reasons we think it’s beneficial for you to shop local. So next time you need a new PC – come and have a chat to us and at the very least, give us a go at matching the price!

6. Links VS Back-Links

Although you may feel that your links provide a great resource for web searchers, let’s face it - Google already knows about all of the sites you’re linking to. Why wouldn’t it send users to those sites directly, rather than sending them to yours? Now there is no actual harm in linking to other sites, particularly if they’re well-respected ones, but what you really want is links back TO your site FROM other sites, particularly the big sites such as news.com.au or even discussion forums and social media. How can you achieve these 'back-links'? Please, please, please don’t go along with the first SPAM mail that you get, telling you they will submit your site to 1,000,000 search engines for $49.00. You DO NOT want to be associated with many of the dodgy sites and search engines out there, and once your reputation is damaged it’s very difficult to un-damage it.

Doing Business Swim instructor calls it a day

Over the years, Glass House Mountains swimming instructor Chris Price estimates she has taught more than 1,000 students to swim. From babies, toddlers and school students and the occasional adult, Chris, who has owned and operated Swim Biz swimming school for the past 10 years, says when she closes the pool gate for the final time at the end of this week, it will be the interaction with her students that she misses the most. Chris said despite having run a successful business and receiving such wonderful support from the local community, after 16 years of teaching she felt it was time to try something new. After a brief holiday, she intends trekking in Borneo in search of Organutans after Easter, and then travelling to Cambodia later in the year to teach English with Harvest Cambodia. “It’s been a really successful business, and I feel fortunate that I have been able to work from home and raise my family at the same time, and if it wasn’t for all the support of the community and my husband John and daughters Chelsea and Jessie, my dream may not have been realised,” Chris said. She also acknowledged another local, Deb Evans, who she has worked closely with over the years, and Estelle Siddons, who Chris took on as a young trainee. “I’d like to thank them both for their dedication and commitment to Swim Biz, as well as all past and present clients,” Chris said. “It’s been very special to me to watch a number of families grow from their first born learning to swim followed by several siblings. It’s a satisfying and rewarding feeling to be part of these little lives with all their different personalities.” Chris, who represented her state in swimming in her youth, said learning to swim was a life skill, and shouldn’t be considered an option. And as well as teaching learn to swim lessons, Chris also has a good following of aqua aerobics participants, who join her twice a week for a water-based workout and a social chat. She’ll miss them all, but is hoping there might be someone out there who has the passion and commitment to take the business over. If you are seriously interested in a lifestyle and career change, or if you are a swimming instructor who would like to work for themselves, give Chris a call on 5496 9222.

Yellow van volunteers reunite Contributed by Ivon Northage

Some 20 past and present volunteers were reunited at Settlers Park on March 27 for the 10th anniversary of the opening of the Tourist Information Centre (yellow van) at Matthew Flinders Park. Although only 11 of us had managed to maintain our yellow shirts, it was never the less a colourful display of both dress and memorabilia contributions (not to mention the tasty tucker). Obviously past anecdotes flowed thick and fast and were too numerous to repeat here, but one in particular probably does represent the flavour of the good old days : - A family from the UK pulled up in their hire car and rushed over to the vollies on duty waving a photo of the van shouting “we’ve found you, we’ve found you” – they had printed the photo off the internet back home and the yellow van was their first port of call in Australia. The many enquiries about the origin of the mountains and their names encouraged a lot of volunteers to further their own knowledge of our famous icons so we would be better prepared for future questions. The original roster as printed by the Glasshouse Country News, was on display and it was interesting to note that only three of the names on the list are still active Tourism volunteers today, namely Rob Morris, Jeff Bodley and Gavin Stewart – well done guys! One of the people in attendance was not a volunteer and I refer of course to councillor Anna, who supported us strongly and consistently over the years. As Anna is retiring at this month’s council elections, we would like to take this opportunity to thank and wish her and husband Russell all the best for the future. Recently the program added a sponsorship with an on-line prescription maker to provide one free pair of spectacles for every pair sold on line – estimated at 5,000 pairs of new spectacles in a year. Currently the program receives 500,000 pairs annually from Australia and Japan, and it refurbishes and distributes about the same number to groups around the world.

The Glossies recognise and celebrate sustainability achievements of residents, businesses and community groups Categories include building design, construction, transport, resource management, green art, edible landscaping and, new to 2012, the Affordable Living Award. Go to www.livingsmartqld.com.au to nominate. Entries close at 5pm, Monday 14 May.

Spot the pothole, tell council Local residents are encouraged to help council after severe weather by reporting potholes or any other storm or flood damage that may pose a potential danger to the community. Council is responsible for around 3500 kilometres of roads across the region. It can react faster to fix things if more people help by reporting them, by phone, or by filling out a quick and easy form on council’s website.

Expo really means business The 2012 Sunshine Coast Business Expo is on next month – and council has booked four of the 50-plus exhibition stands with professional service providers on hand to answer questions and provide advice to local business. The expo is on 10 and 11 May at the Sunshine Coast TAFE’s Mooloolaba campus. Visit www.scbizexpo.com.au for information.

Living Smart Homes Council’s Living Smart Homes initiative is a free online program helping residents save on household bills, reduce their ecological footprint, and much more. The new-look resource now has three new and exciting modules to work through and more resources than ever to help you save. For more details visit www.livingsmartqld.com.au/homes.

Conservation agreements Do you love your local environment and wish to make a positive difference? Council and the Noosa and District Landcare Group can help. Council’s Voluntary Conservation Agreement program supports private landholders by protecting bushland on their properties in perpetuity, by registering a covenant on title over some or all of the property. Until December, landholders who enter new VCAs will be offered free trees by the Landcare Group. To register your interest, call council on 5485 0229.

APRIL 4 2012

Hi everyone Well the countdown is well and truly on for the Local Government election and it’s getting hard to ignore with the number of election signs now dotting our streets on the increase. The majority of GCNews readership lives in Division 1 however much of the Mooloolah area is in Division 5. So this week we have included profiles from each of the three candidates in Division 5 - sitting Councillor Jenny McKay, Maleny resident Charles Hodgson and Eudlo local Clive Plater. In the next edition April 18 we will be featuring a profile on each of the eight Mayoral candidates. I imagine this must be one of the largest field of Mayoral candidates in the State. So let’s hope their profiles can help us decide on who will be the best person for this important job. In the April 23 edition we will feature the Division 1 candidate profiles, and for those of you that would like to opportunity to put additional questions to the Division 1 candidates you should mark the candidate evening organised by GMAN in your diary for the Thursday after Easter, April 12. To find out more about the event check out the ad on page 20.

Jenny McKay - Division 5 Born into a family that has lived and worked in the hinterland for four generations, standing Councillor Jenny McKay is not only passionate about rural wellbeing but already has a longstanding demonstrated performance record along with a keen knowledge on what priorities are needed for the region. “Smart business leadership is essential in Council. Nominating candidates often speak of being committed and creating change, but it takes leadership and a keen business sense along with an understanding of the way forward to accomplish it. I am that voice of experience. “The hinterland is my home, and I take my elected position to grow and protect it very seriously. There are many challenges ahead of us, and I understand the balance needed between economic growth and environmental sustainability. “The recent DERM land valuations shows a drop of 4.7 per cent across the board. This highlights the serious issues that we are experiencing, and is not just about Councillors filling potholes. We are facing an urgent need to retain the experienced leaders of council, who have demonstrated capacity to work together for the betterment of the Sunshine Coast, and their individual divisions. As we go into this election, there are continuing issues such as the protection of the Blackall Range escarpment, housing shortages and fall in local business. I know the people of this community and I know how to work with them to move forward. Now is the time for absolute experience and maturity of demonstrated leadership. “As a leader for Division 5 and the greater region, I have demonstrated that I can think globally and act locally. A vote for me is a trifecta for people, place and prosperity.” www.jennymckay.com.au Find me on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/JennyMcKayCouncillor

Charles Hodgson - Division 5

Clive Plater - Division 5

My vision is a region whose economy is strong, where people have good jobs, where raising a family is encouraged, where there is opportunity for the young and where there is dignity and support for the elderly and less fortunate. Towns that are safe, with communities that are caring and tolerant. Towns that have retained their rural nature yet fully avail themselves of modern opportunities. Towns that acknowledge and respect their past and are confident of their future. I will support existing key industries while assisting the diversification of our economy into acknowledged areas of growth and opportunity. Industries such as food, knowledge, education, arts, creative and environmental industries. Diversification creating more jobs, better jobs, increased local spending and towns that are sustainable and prosperous. I will ensure people can clearly see value for their rates and levies. Funds spent wisely with fairness and equity in the services and facilities delivered. I will listen with an open mind to local communities and communicate their wishes effectively. I will be a staunch champion of Division 5 and will ‘go to bat’ when its people, businesses and organisations are under threat. I understand the importance of vital infrastructure such as roads and bridges to the health of rural towns and the need to have damaged infrastructure repaired promptly. I will support initiatives to improve the delivery, speed and access of council services and measures aimed to reduce compliance costs and red tape. I will advocate for the maintenance and expansion of vital public transport connections linking Hinterland communities and providing access to key centres across the Coast. In achieving these goals I will protect our cherished Hinterland lifestyle, character and environment.

I was born in Nambour in 1953 and am very proud of being a fourth generation local. My great grandfather, G L Bury settled at Mooloolah in 1878. From 1888 until 1905 he served the community as Councillor and Chairman of the Divisional Boards and Maroochy Shire Council; a great uncle JT Lowe also served on the Council. For the past 20 years I have lived at Eudlo with my wife of 37 years, we have a married son and daughter plus two grandsons, all living locally. I have been involved for over 40 years in major local civil engineering projects such as Kawana. My interests include preserving local history particularly in regard to the sugar industry and locomotives, and military history (Google my name if you're interested in finding out more). I am the President of the Nambour & District Historical Museum, and a member of the Eudlo Hall and Recreation Grounds Association as Flag Officer, and have served as a community member of Council’s Heritage Reference Group. If elected to Council I would like to see a back to basics approach. With my engineering background I want to see our roads and drainage improved with a proactive ‘preventive’ maintenance program, as well as a program for sealing the council’s unsealed roads, improve the ratio of Council’s field staff compared to its bureaucracy, and strive to restore and maintain a simpler lifestyle and holiday appeal. Preserve and promote our heritage, a more consultative approach to development with an aim of better and more practical developments, and ensure that infrastructure being handed to Council is of a high standard and low maintenance. I would bring to Council about 140 years of accumulated local knowledge including flood levels and over 40 years of construction experience, I know what works, what doesn’t and why our roads are falling apart. www.gcnews.com.au

You Said It

Light Rail for the Sunshine Coast?

Letters to the Editor Letters are printed at the discretion of the editor, Lea Parkes and her policy is to include letters which focus on issues and are not about personally attacking other people. For a letter to be considered for printing it must be accompanied by the name, address and phone number of the sender. Anonymous letters will not be printed. Preference is given to letters under 300 words. Letters may be edited to make them more readable, but the meaning will not be changed. Regular correspondents will be limited to alternate issues to give everyone a chance to have their say. Letters must meet the Friday 12.00noon deadline. Views expressed in the 'You said it' page are those of the writer - and not this publication. Please send your letters to letters@gcnews.com.au or fax to 5438 7446.

I refer to Steve Attrill’s primary campaign platform that he is the only candidate to have a stance on the $2 billion light rail proposal and its envisaged coastal route, which quite possibly will not connect with the hinterland. I, like most, Steve, don’t need to be challenged to lobby the urgent need to ‘connect with the coast’ be this through the proposed CAMCOS or a similar integrated transport system. It is my understanding that major public transport infrastructure and operating services such as rail have traditionally been the responsibility of our State Government; however, councils play an important role in their planning. It should be noted that stage one of the Gold Coast light rail project was jointly funded by Gold Coast City Council and the Queensland and Federal Governments. This is the first time any public transport project in Australia has been

jointly funded by all three levels of government. Do I support light rail? Well yes, in theory I do, as does the current Council as evidenced in August 2011 by its support of the formation of the Light Rail Task Force. The role of the new Council will be to examine the findings and recommendations of this task force and decide if this is a viable transport option for the coast. Councils can plan and recommend, but at the end of the day I believe our major transport infrastructure should be funded solely by State and Federal Governments. The current transport levy paid by Sunshine Coast ratepayers unfortunately covers only a few co-funded bus routes. Bear in mind that 74 per cent of the Sunshine Coast’s growth over the next 30 years is projected to take place within Division 1, resulting in a further estimated 34,000 vehicles on our roads for Caloundra South alone, not to mention the increase in commuter numbers. I consider, therefore, that it would be grossly unfair to burden this Council’s ratepayers with funding for what ostensibly would be an extension of the Queensland Rail system. I met a man a few years ago that struck me as a person that didn’t have a lot to say but just got in and got things done. It was Bob McLean. That was some four or five years ago. Since then I have gotten to know Bob a fair bit better. That is, if you can ever get hold of him long enough to sit down and have a chat with him. I cannot believe a person can give as much of himself to as many local community organisations so freely as Bob does and still find time to have a home life. He is blessed to have the support his wife Margaret bestows upon him. Without her backing, I honestly think the man would not be able to undertake as much voluntary and community work as he does. Bob freely gives his time to several organisations in the area, The Glasshouse Country Menshed, Glasshouse Rotary Club, Glasshouse Country Bromeliad Society, The Glasshouse Country Prostate Cancer Support Group, The Mary McKillop Centre and the Beerwah Sporting Complex are a few that come to mind. He has also been the main organiser for the Glasshouse Rotary Garden and Sustainability Expo since its inception. A feat that alone, would take an ordinary person 12 months to organise, let alone leave time for all the other charity and community organisations he attends to. His knowledge of the local community, his approachability, get things done, make things happen and don’t take no for an answer attitude, are what this division needs. One thing I have forgotten to mention is Bob’s common sense approach. He does possess and apply this. Something that, sadly, so much of today’s society lacks. The constituents of the Glasshouse area could do a lot worse than give Bob McLean their vote when they head to the polling booth for the local council elections in the near future. Good luck in your endeavour Bob. Bob Watkins Peachester www.gcnews.com.au

Where are all the candidates?

I live in Beerwah, and as the Council Elections come near I'm surprised that I have only had Rick Baberowski and Ann Ross door knock. I only read the tarot cards at Beerwah Books and Bits on a Wednesday afternoon for a few hours so I’m home most of the time. So I can't say others have missed me in their door knocking, with no leaflets left either. I'm not the type to go to public forums where there are numerous people and you’re unable to ask the questions that interest you the most. So as far as I'm concerned it's a two way contest between Rick and Ann. What happened to the others that have nominated? Yvonne Taylor Beerwah

Kind people out there

The road-rail clash ahead

The change of the state government and the April 28 local council elections give us a real chance to re-focus on what we need for the coast over the next four or five years. It is clear to me that the top regional priority for the next term of council has to be upgrading the road and rail network. This division especially will face the full impact of massive growth over the next two decades, with the Caloundra South and Palmview megadevelopments and infill developments around our townships. This will put huge pressure on our townships, roads and parking as commuters pour into the only rail connections they have. Our roads are already struggling, many are not well constructed or maintained and driving in our division no longer resembles the more relaxed country experience we once expected. We have five separate multi-billion dollar proposals about how to improve our transport network clashing for funding, from rail duplication to light rail and the controversial upgrade to the highway near the Ettamogah Pub. All will require substantial state or federal money, with a critical source being the federal Infrastructure Australia program. It's blindly obvious we won’t get them all. Without clear priorities we continue to effectively push ourselves to the back of the state and federal funding queue. I am calling on mayoral candidates to take a position on this issue and commit to convening an all stakeholders task force to review the road and rail network developments early in the next term of council, reporting back to the community with a realistic and prioritised plan that the coast can unite behind. We must build an integrated road, bus and rail network, or face another even more congested decade of piecemeal catch-up with our infrastructure needs. Rick Baberowski Division 1 Candidate

Good on ya Rick

I took the opportunity of meeting Rick Baberowski last week. It was important for me to at least have a short discussion - after which I could confirm my candidate selection for Division 1 Council Election. Rick is apparently passionate about his work for the community. His involvement over the years has given him an insight into the values of the people, the services required and the way in which to go about obtaining good results. His previous work experience has given him thorough background knowledge of both government and private sector workings. It is interesting to learn that examples of his planning and development projects may be seen at Beerwah and Landsborough - the later so often overlooked. His future Council contribution would be valued. The community groups, with which Rick is associated, are usually involved with business progress. Yet it should be acknowledged that strong friendships often emerge and the ‘getting to know you’ aspect is important in today's world. Rick's outstanding trait pleases me enormously. Despite his extensive knowledge, he is happy to LISTEN. Good on ya, Rick. You've got what it takes. J. Valenta Landsborough

Karen Harris, owner of Stella Polaris Therapies, has an extensive array of relaxation and remedial treatments available for clients. “I offer remedial massage therapy incorporating various techniques such as trigger point, muscle activation, stretches, hip tilt and rotation assessment, aromatherapy, heat packs and cupping. Each treatment is tailored to suit client requirements,” she says. “I also offer relaxation massage, hot stones, reiki and lymphatic drainage and most recently I completed a Diploma of Reflexology so clients can have their feet pampered as well.” Karen says the majority of clients experience an immediate reduction of pain and discomfort and following the initial treatment, opt to return for regular maintenance massage. “Those who have experienced the foot reflexology, describe it as extremely relaxing and almost as beneficial as a full body massage. The hot stone treatment is also popular with those who are very stressed and need something extra to melt away tight muscles,” she says.

Living Well Music Today With our regular columnist, local musician Dr Michael Whiticker Meet local singer / song writer Ian Williams, a teacher who uses music as his tool for communicating. I first heard Ian Williams perform in late 2011 when he gave an all original solo set with thoughtful words, impressive finger style guitar work and a fine singing voice. I was keen to find out more about his work so we arranged an interview to allow me to delve a little into his background. He is an intelligent conversationalist - our chat was peppered with quotes from his favourite song writers, Paul Simon and Bob Dylan amongst them. He is also an urgent communicator - his conversation returns

constantly to his passion for teaching and the importance of it to him. His background includes years based in the Northern Territory (the Tiwi Islands was his first teaching position) and Far North Queensland, working with indigenous children. His informing me that indigenous kids (in far northern communities) often shout when singing - some times out of tune, as many of them suffer a high level of deafness, was enlightening. Most musicians of Ian’s quality - whether they practice their art full or part time, confirm it as the most important part of their life, Ian however considers himself foremost an educator. As a songwriter Ian's stated aim is to impart to children a sense of adventure and wonder, with such little gems as ‘Secret Agent Magpie’ and ‘So Many Stars’ - songs which illustrate his point that good songs will communicate across all age groups.

Avoid a diet blow-out with Easter calorie counter

If you're tempted to over-indulge in chocolate at Easter be warned - one medium chocolate Easter egg is loaded with 260 calories and you’ll need to walk 4.2 kilometres if you want to burn it off. Australia’s low-fat cookbook Queen Annette Sym said the two main ingredients in chocolate are FAT and SUGAR so Easter Eggs are a double whammy to your diet. “My philosophy is if you do the crime, you have to do the time. To burn off just 800 calories of Easter treats you will need to spend a full hour running, kick boxing or doing high impact aerobics," she said. “People really need to ask themselves is gorging on all that chocolate really worth it? I think it’s far better to show a little moderation at Easter time.” The best-selling author of over 3 million cookbooks said many people would be shocked if they counted up their total fat and sugar consumption over Easter. “Your body burns sugar before it burns fat, so if you ate 1,000 calories of chocolate and walked for half an hour, you would burn 350 calories in sugar then store the rest as fat,” she said. “Many people reduce their fat intake when they’re trying to lose weight, but they forget they need to reduce their sugar consumption as well.” Annette said Easter was a particularly dangerous period for slimmers because it had the potential to derail people’s entire weight loss plans. “A lot of people binge on chocolate, feel guilty and

then decide to give up on losing weight for good,” she said. “People need to stay focused on their weight loss goals. Stop looking at Easter as an opportunity to give yourself a treat, and start treating yourself with respect instead.” Annette’s Easter Calorie Counter Fat Sugar Time to walk off Cadbury 200g rabbit 60g 112.2g 2½hrs 1 pkt mini Malteser eggs 38g 69g 1½hrs 110g Cherry Ripe egg 32g 55g 1¼hrs 16 Ferrero Rocher in egg crate (125g) 53g 49g 2¼hrs 150g Heritage bilby 45g 86g 1¾hrs Humpty Dumpty carton small eggs with beanies inside (175g) 42g 105g 1¾hrs

I was interested to hear about the original songs of his I had heard some months earlier, written I assumed for adults. So he talked about the period in 2003 when he had produced an album’s worth of songs not directed at children, excerpts from which you can hear at http://www.myspace.com/ ianrosswilliams. It is hard to select a favourite, but amongst the songs that stood out for me on first listen were ‘Suicide Bomber’ ‘Kiss’, ‘Angel Song’ and ‘A Beautiful Lie’. As a song writer Ian considers himself foremost a lyricist and (as he said with some humility) it is the quality of his lyrics which allow him to stand out as a songwriter. Do have a listen to his work and see what you think.

Annette said those who needed to satisfy their chocolate cravings could try making one of the guilt-free recipes from her latest cookbook ‘Symply Too Good To Be True 6’, such as Choc Mint Squares with only 2.2g fat and 15.5g sugar or Chocolate Banana Cake which has only 2.8g of fat and 16.3g of sugar per serve. “People also need to think about the amount of chocolate they give their kids over Easter and the message it sends to them,” Annette said. Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship Thelie Hobbs Praise House Christmas and Easter are two of my favourite times of the year. While Christmas brings peace, Easter brings hope! It doesn’t matter what is going on in my life around this time of year...I always feel a fresh sense of hope! I’m not talking about an ‘I hope so’, kind of hope. I’m talking about an ‘I know so’, kind of hope. Sometimes life is difficult and it doesn’t always turn out the way we had planned; and situations and circumstances can change our attitude from hopeful to hopeless. I can’t think of a more heartbreaking word in the English language than hopeless. You may be reading this today and you might be going through a really hard time where stress is overwhelming your life and making you feel like there is no hope - but there is hope for you again! Jesus came to bring hope to the hopeless and He is able and willing to fill your life with fresh hope and purpose! ‘If you honestly say, Jesus is Lord, and if you believe with all your heart that God raised him from death, you will be saved.’ (Romans 10:9). OVER 50S NEED HOME LOAN ‘EXIT STRATEGY’ In short, lenders want to see that there is a comfortable level of funds available to ensure the debt can be paid out, and this involves outlining a clear strategy for paying out the debt. For example, stating As a result of ‘responsible lending’ what assets are available – such as requirements associated with the superannuation, shares or equity in National Credit Code that came into other properties – to help pay off effect in 2011, lenders want to see the debt if needed. how you plan to pay out the loan. It might also involve explaining What does this mean for you? when you plan to move from fullOnce upon a time the strategy was time to part-time work, or when you to simply sell a property to pay plan to retire completely. out the remaining debt, but that’s For example: A 52-year-old nurse no longer acceptable to lenders who want to see a borrower’s asset might explain in her application position, versus liabilities, and how for a $300,000 loan that she has the loan will be paid out once they $300,000 in super and plans to work full-time until she is 65 and retire or on their death. then move to part-time work for five years.

Lenders need to see a high level of detail in loan applications. If we, for example, look at a 55-year-old tradesperson, it’s unlikely they’ll still be in that type of role when they’re 70, compared with a person in a less physically demanding role. If that’s the case, lenders will want to know what resources they will have available in 15 years’ time. Likewise, if a borrower identifies a particular property as the means for paying off the loan debt, the lender will want to know about the property: what type of property it is, where it’s located, and the sales

history of that area.

A Smartline broker can help This situation for over-50s highlights the difficulties in dealing direct with a bank to secure a home loan. The old saying ‘you only get one chance to make a good first impression’ is very true when dealing with lenders these days. It’s all about having someone in your corner who understands how the lenders work, and who can do all the legwork for you in putting together a quality application. If you’re keen to put your ‘best foot forward’, get in touch with your nearest Smartline mortgage broker to find out how we can help.

Five ways to sell your home for the best price 1. Understanding your buyers Different kinds of properties suit different kinds of buyers but if you can second-guess the kind of people who may be attracted to your property you can craft your marketing accordingly, better understand how you can go about preparing your home for sale and decide which real estate agent to choose. 2. Removing personal clutter Your first step in preparing your home for sale is to pare down your furniture and belongings. Remove any ornaments that are too personal or idiosyncratic including family photos and children’s drawings. Home buyers are looking for a place they can imagine themselves being happy and proud of so leave room for them to visualise themselves in your home. 3. Adding value with cosmetic changes Space, freshness and light are probably the most sought-after aspects of a property. Many properties that have a lot to offer in this regard are overlooked by buyers because sellers have failed to carry out simple and often inexpensive improvements. Try a coat of paint to freshen up the place, lift worn carpets to reveal floorboards you can polish or replace tired cabinet ACREAGE ESCAPE – HOME, SHED + PRIVACY 4+ 1 3 doors and door handles in the kitchen and bathroom. A to Z of Trades and Services Talkin’ Trades - with Mark Malone of Blockade Security Screens

employed for a relatively large security screen manufacturer in Brisbane as a sales rep/measurer as well as in product design and installation work. Why should readers give you a call? For my customer service, efficiency, professionalism and attention to detail, knowledge and industry experience. Also, I am BSA licenced, which is important, as there are so many unlicensed tradespeople in the industry that don’t do things correctly, something that I am looking to change. What are your opening hours? I can be contacted 8.00am – 6.00pm Monday to Friday, 8.00am – 2.00pm Saturday. Meetings can be arranged at my home/office by appointment, but mostly onsite, at customers’ homes or jobsites. Contact Mark on 0477 999 191, fax 5445 0548, email blockadesecurity@gmail. com or visit their website at www.blockadesecurity.com.au

What sets your business apart from others that may offer a similar service? My objective is to become one of the more recognised, trusted security screen companies on the Sunshine Coast. We are only starting out small, working from home and sourcing quality products from only reputable dealers, but my goal is to eventually set up my own factory/workshop/office in the hinterland area, and train staff in the correct methods of manufacture and installation. How long have you been operating your business? I have 20 years experience in the glass and aluminium industry, I’ve worked in the industry since I was 18-years-old. I have worked for major window companies, in the factory, as well as on the road as a ‘service tech’, as well as smaller security screen/blind and awning manufacturers from the Gold Coast to the Sunshine Coast as a measurer and installer. For the past nine years I have been

Autumn Patch

It is the season for growing – Autumn … well starting from April! Once again we have witnessed some torrential downpours during March that has had many gardeners consider converting their plots into water gardens or even rice paddies. It isn’t any wonder my water chestnuts have thrived in these conditions. The gamble I took in February, where I planted both late summer and early winter crops did not go so well. Whilst the summer crops would have loved the water, it just didn’t get warm enough for them to flourish, except for the random hot day that saw them wilt. On the other hand, my baby brassicas became dishes for my escapee chooks … I guess they beat the caterpillars … or ate them too! On the basis we get to see a bit of nice autumn weather, now is the time to get into strawberries! This year I’m starting a fresh patch. Strawberries are technically a perennial so they should live for a few years producing fruit. However, around the third year the plants can become more susceptible to disease and should be removed. My plants have had their two seasons and now I’ll be using the zillions of new runners to start out my new patch. To reduce soil borne disease such as Verticillium Wilt, I will ensure my new patch

is not in an area that has grown other Rosaceae (raspberries, roses, apples) or Solanaceae (potato, tomato, etc.) families in the last three or four seasons. So to prepare your patch, all you need to do is dig lots of mushroom compost and blood and bone. Then mulch and leave the bed to settle until you have your runners or plants ready to sow. As for the maintenance, just sprinkle some dynamic lifter around at flowering time and keep the moisture up by watering around the plant without wetting the leaves and fruit. Strawberries are also a great plant for kids to have a go at and are perfect for small spaces too. They can be planted in a pot, in an old wheel barrow or even in a big old toy truck, and if the kids take care of their plant, the rewards at the end are sweet and healthy. Once the strawberry patch is taken care of, use your Easter break to plant out your winter wonderland of veggies. It is really the most wonderful time for the veggie patch and planting now as indicated in the table, will give you the best possible chance for success. Look forward to getting out in the garden with some fine weather. Until next time, happy growing!

2012 Mens Fours Final winners

Monika Duff Ladies Singles Champion for 2012 Another busy week for the lawn bowlers. Monday 2 Bowl Triples Day - Many teams from other clubs take part, so popular is this day. Third place went to a GCBC team, Mike Moore, Jack Timm and Brian Fogarty. Wednesday Ladies Day - Final of the Ladies A Grade Singles Club Championship was played. The Ladies Singles Champion for 2012 is Monika Duff, with Di Hunt the runner up. Social games of triples (2) and fours (1) were also played. Dennis Hume, Maurie Dawes, Jenny Hobson and Trevor Bertram def Dennis Hume, Warren Blackbourne, Gary Lehmann and John McSwain (D. Hume subbed for both teams)17 to 12. Liesa Craven, Di Sutherland, and Jan Lawson def Dalija Wells, Margie Lehmann and Chris Freshwater 28 to 19. Ruth Ellery, D. Buckley and Marleen Bertram def Margaret Beasley, Di Garland and Joan Wilson 22 to 10. Thursday Open pairs Day - A.M. winners were Bob Moss and Lindsay Henderson 2 + 44. Runners up were Josef Albrecht and Gaye Rohweder with 24 points in their second game. The P.M. winners were Mac Townson and Mike Moore 2 + 46. Richard White, Rodney Sharpe, Phil Siggers and Terry Little def Clive Sinton, Ron Wilson, Kerry Capern and Rob Farrell 19 to 18. Though Rob’s team won 13 ends to eight the loss of three points on 14th end, four points on 16th end and six points on the 19th end robbed them of a win. Thus making Terry Little’s team the 2012 Men’s Fours Club Champions. www.gcnews.com.au

Lessons for Beginners to Advanced

Glasshouse Gliders Ladies take on the big boys (or girls)! Last weekend at Musgrave Hill Bowls Club on the Gold Coast, saw a modern-day David and Goliath battle. Over seven weeks of the Taylor Queensland Super Challenge Competition saw the Glasshouse Gliders Ladies in third place within their section of the Bronze Division. This meant that they went through to the Round Robin Playoffs at Musgrave Hill. On Saturday, tiny Glasshouse with its Ladies membership of 27 (of whom less than 15 play on a regular basis), pitted their skills against Sunnybank, Ipswich United and Paradise Point Ladies Bowls Clubs (Paradise Point Ladies Bowls Club alone has 300 + members). After winning both matches on Saturday, Triples 24-18, Fours 21-12, against Sunnybank, Triples 37-19, Fours 19-13 against Ipswich United, Glasshouse went

into the final match on Sunday morning against Paradise Point, one point ahead. A very tense match against Paradise Point ensued. The Fours, Di Sutherland, Jan Lawson, Ann White and Di Hunt were neck and neck for most of the 21 ends, eventually going down 19-25. The Triples had a commanding lead of 13-4 after 12 ends, but Paradise Point pulled back to 15-13 after 17 ends. Glasshouse Triples were 27-19 on the last end and needed to win the end to have an ‘overall points’ win to progress to the finals. The pressure was almost too much for the Glasshouse supporters (many now from other clubs that had been eliminated). Margie Lehmann, Millie Freshwater and Chris Freshwater held their cool. The final Score was 29-19, giving an overall win of 48-44. Tally of wins and losses, 7 points to 1. The weekend of March 31 and April 1 will see the Glasshouse Gliders Ladies competing at the prestigious Tweed Heads Bowls Club in NSW. The Quarter Final will be played on Saturday morning, the Semi Final on Saturday Afternoon, and the Final on Sunday morning. GO GLASSHOUSE! Results next week. Fingers crossed.

Powerlifting debut for Beerburrum Stongman

Beerburrum Strongman Tim O’Shea successfully made his powerlifting debut at the GPC Powerlifting Queensland State Titles at Northgate on Saturday. Better known as a strongman competitor and highland games thrower, Tim decided on short notice to have a go at Powerlifting, and came up trumps immediately winning the Queensland title in the 140kg class. Of the three powerlifting disciplines, Tim was comfortable with the squat and deadlift, but cited the bench press as a concern. “I usually don’t train the bench press at all, as it has no application to strongman,” Tim said. With only a few months preparation, Tim managed a credible 180kg on his second bench press attempt, and narrowly missed 200kg on his third. Combined with a 280kg Squat and a 270kg Deadlift, Tim posted a winning total of 730kg. Next step for Tim is the Powerlifting Nationals, held at the Caloundra RSL on June 23, where he hopes to improve on his lifts, and is striving to win an Australian title in his weight class. After this Tim’s focus will shift back to his favoured strongman events, with Brisbane’s Strongest Man on June 30 being the start of his preparation for his third appearance at Australia’s Strongest Man in November.

Beerwah Ladies Golf Contributed by Jenny Kelly

Finally some lovely weather to bring us out to the course. Even though the ground was still a little bit soggy under foot on Thursday, we had 54 ladies compete in a Stroke competition in two divisions for trophies kindly donated by Kaye Jansen and Gail Murphy. Our Division 1 winner was Barb Drury with a Nett score of 75, Runner up was Mavis Brimelow on 78. Division 2 winner was Brenda Briese with a Nett score of 75, Runner up was Josie Thistlethwaite on 80 Nett. I'm certain the scores will improve as the course dries out. The NTP's on 2 Margaret Zonca, Mavis Brimelow on 5, Heather Henn on 16, and Sue Williamson on 18. The Ball Rundown went to 82. Saturday saw 30 ladies play a Stableford for Marie Goyder's trophy. The winner was Kaye Jansen with 35 points from Brenda Briese with 32 points. The NTP's were Marie Goyder on 2, and Brenda got both the 16th and the 18th. Hollie Sinclair took out the Birdie Box on the 1st. The Ball Rundown went to 30 points. Until next week, stay safe and good golfing. www.gcnews.com.au

A lawyer and a senior citizen are sitting next to each other on a long flight. The lawyer thought seniors were so silly that he could get one over on them easily. The lawyer asks to play a game, but the senior is tired and politely declines. The lawyer persists, saying it was a lot of fun. "I ask you a question, and if you don't know the answer, you pay me only $5.00. Then you ask me one, but I will pay you $500.00 if I don’t know," he says. This catches the senior's attention and, to keep the lawyer quiet, he agrees to play the game. The lawyer asks the first question. "What's the distance from the Earth to the Moon?" The senior doesn't say a word, but reaches into his pocket, pulls out a five-dollar note, and hands it

to the lawyer. Now, it's the senior's turn. He asks the lawyer, "what goes up a hill with three legs, and comes down with four?" The lawyer uses his laptop to search all references he can find on the net. He sends e-mails to all the smart friends he knows; all to no avail. After an hour of searching, he finally gives up. He wakes the senior and hands him $500.00. The senior pockets the $500.00 and goes right back to sleep. The lawyer is going nuts not knowing the answer. He wakes the senior up and asks, "well, so what goes up a hill with three legs and comes down with four?" The senior reaches into his pocket, hands the lawyer $5.00, and goes back to sleep. Don't mess with old farts! Lee Mapstone, Glass House
