Hi Everyone
O
n Sunday afternoon we headed along to the Dads Day Out held for the first time, a Father’s Day community event, at Skippy Park at Landsborough. When we arrived, the supercool ‘Superdads’ band were ‘rocking’ the crowd that came along on the day to hang out with kids, to spend some great family time relaxing and enjoy some time out together. The idea of the day was originally proposed by the Beerwah High School Chaplain Mike Turner and his ‘right hand man’ Brendan Edwards from Glasshouse Community Church back in April.

The fellas did a great job in getting people on board to help them organise the day. It offered the community something local to do that was all about families and friends just enjoying the day and the space. Our community is fortunate to have such a dynamic group of Chaplains who were keen to get involved on the day and run a number of activities for kids and parents to participate in. It was also great to see Skippy Park with 400 or so local kids of all ages, on bikes, skateboards, scooters, family’s, kids playing in the playground, dad’s kicking footballs and enjoying the aroma of a good Rotary sausage sizzle wafting past.

Mooloolah garden makeover A few months ago a Mooloolah family received the devastating news that their three-month-old baby suffers from an extremely rare syndrome called Aicardi Syndrome. With only 4,000 cases known worldwide, like most people they weren’t even aware of what the syndrome was. They quickly found out that for someone with Aicardi Syndrome it can mean the absence (complete or partial) of the part of the brain which sits between the right and left sides and allows the right side to communicate with the left. They may suffer from infantile spasms (a form of seizures) which Zahalia does. They can have lesions or ‘lacunae’ of the retina of the eye which can affect their eye sight, as well as other types of brain defects. For Kristy Christopher from Kristabelle Beauty at Landsborough – baby Zahlia’s aunty – she couldn’t just sit back and do nothing, so while her sister and brother-in-law were busy getting the care and treatment for Zahlia established, Kristy decided to do something that would help improve the families’ lifestyle. Since purchasing their property at Mooloolah a few of years ago, the couple had been gradually working on landscaping the garden and creating an outdoor entertaining area, and still have a long way to go to complete their dream garden. Kristy decided to spread the word to local businesses and see what support she could generate
to help the couple complete the project and create a haven for them and Zahalia to spend time in. On August 24, stage one of the project got underway, with the construction of a concrete driveway. Kristy said it was a great day and she was really grateful to Q1 Concreting who came from the Gold Coast. “The fellas did an amazing job, while Ken Grant from Mooloolah IGA provided food and drinks for the boys. “We would also like to thank Matt Blake Design, Morcraft Homes, Hytec Concrete, Town and Country Bobcat and Tipper Hire, Advance Crane Hire, All Coast Concrete Cutting, Adlay Concrete, Sally Brunner from Mooloolah Valley Real Estate and the Rooney Family. “It was really great to see how overjoyed Sally and Darren were with the result,” Kirsty said. The next stages of Zahlia’s garden that Kristy would like to continue with are backyard / outdoor entertaining and turfing , so if anyone in the community would like to donate material such as timber, or roofing material for the project please contact Kristy directly on 0429 340 490 or via email kristabelle@aol.com. au, or if you would like to make a donation Kristy has set up a bank account for Zahalia’s Garden – bank account details are Bank of QLD BSB 124 001, Acc No. 100058895

With the increase in vegetation growth due to the long wet spell over the last 12 months or so, the Queensland Rural Fire Service is asking everyone to be careful, be prepared and be vigilant now that the fire season is upon us. Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) is reminding people that their survival during a bushfire is highly dependent on how wellprepared they are before the event. Steve Rook, 3rd Officer and Volunteer Community Educator (VCE) of the Glass House Mountains Rural Fire Brigade agrees. “I would like to thank Andrew Powell on his column in last week’s GCNews regarding ‘Prepare for Bushfire Season’,” he said. “The more people who are spreading the word about the Prepare.Act.Survive (Bushfire Survival) program the better. “Too many residents in the Glass House area are complacent when it comes to having a Bushfire Survival Plan. On many occasions I have heard the words ‘we live in the estate so it won't happen to us.’ WRONG! “Glasshouse Country is surrounded by bush in one direction or the other, and the greatest threat to any home is what we call an ‘ember attack’, which can travel for several kilometres. “These embers can lodge in or on combustible material around the house causing the house to catch fire. So no matter whether you live on acreage or 'in town', you must have a Bushfire Survival Plan.
Gavin Stewart with the new fire danger sign on Steve Irwin Way “The local Volunteer Community Educators (VCE) are trained in providing advice on Bushfire survival plans and the Prepare.Act.Survive program in general. “We are available to come to your home or community group to discuss your needs and assist in developing your survival plan,” explained Steve. Your Glass House VCEs are: Steve Rook – 0407 572 930; Gavin Stewart – 0437 931 657; and Kirsty Levis - 0418 980 019. For those residents in Landsborough, contact Kev Sedgeman on 0429 949 991 or Sue Sedgman on 0428 940 991. Peachester residents can call either Bruce Page, 5494 9557 or Keith Welstead, 5494 9598. Sore neck and shoulders?

Are your sore neck and shoulders making life less enjoyable? Does sitting at the computer, driving, or even reading a book cause a burning discomfort in your shoulders that spreads up into the base of your skull? If so, you may be suffering from Spinal Subluxation and poor posture – 2 common problems that chiropractic care is very effective in relieving. Subluxation is the term chiropractors use to describe ‘dysfunctional’ vertebrae in the spine. This occurs when the spine loses normal motion and/or position, and can cause wear and tear on the discs, ligaments, muscles and other spinal tissues. Subluxation can also have an affect on the nerves exiting the spine – leading to even more issues of pain and poor health. Today’s lifestyle encourages us to fall into ‘forward head posture’ - where our head sits in front of our shoulders – rather than in line with the shoulders as it should. This forward posture has a significant impact on your health and your appearance and if left unaddressed, tends to get worse as you get older. Researchers agree that for every 2.5cm of forward head posture there is an equivalent increase of 4.5kg of stress on the neck. It’s no wonder poor posture is such a pain! Poor posture and Spinal Subluxation often result in back aches, neck pain, jaw pain, loss of lung capacity, gastrointestinal problems, pre-disposition to arm, shoulder and rotator cuff injuries and the list goes on. Fortunately, we can help! Call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today to find out if Spinal Subluxation is the cause of your discomfort. The low-down on the Steve Irwin slow down The stretch of road from Moffats Road, south of the Matilda’s down to Beerburrum Township, has created considerable community concern. More recently, local Beerburrum and Glass House Mountain residents have expressed unease at the situation, with many taking the opportunity to make submissions on lowering the speed limit via the State Government speed limit review process currently being undertaken through the Department of Transport and Main Roads (DTMR) website. One concerned local Beerburrum man, Tim O’Shea, has been using Facebook to encourage people to make submissions to the review via their on-line survey. "As a concerned local who has three young children, I am very happy to see the speed limit dropped to a more appropriate 80km/hr,” he said. “In particular, I am pleased to see that the residents of the Tibrogargan Drive and Byron Court area (including the retirement village) have a more appropriate speed limit on their doorstep, and that Vecchio's will have safer access as a result of the lower speed limit,” explained Mr O’Shea. Another Bowen Road man, Bob McLean is happy with the changes, but is looking for more reductions. “As a regular user of Steve Irwin Way I feel that the speed limit should be lowered to 60kms an
hour between Foley Road at Beerwah through to Barrs Road at Glass House Mountains,” he said. “With the density of traffic on Steve Irwin Way combined with the concealed access point and the number of fatalities that have occurred in the past few years I really believe the reduced speed limit is important to maintain the safely of the users,” said Mr McLean. Glasshouse Country News followed the efforts of the Twin Cedars Homeowners Association in their struggle to have bureaucrats from the DTMR understand the dangers the 100km per hour speed limit created along that stretch of the road. In early June they finally had enough and took their case directly to the office of the Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Scott Emerson. It seems that they made a significant impression on the Minister. Margaret Chapman, President of the Homeowners Association was pleased with the result. “We’re absolutely delighted with the outcome of all our efforts since starting our campaign at the start of the year,” she said. “From starting at a position of total frustration with no-one seeming to take our submissions seriously, it seems that taking the issue to the local member Andrew Powell, who then helped us get to see the Minister, made all the difference. “However, we are disappointed that the Department is a little short-sighted with not rezoning the entire Steve Irwin Way down to 80km per hour as we originally were seeking,” said Mrs Chapman.

Member for Glass House Andrew Powell has welcomed the reduction of the speed limit following a number of safety concerns raised by the community about sections of Steve Irwin Way. “I received a number of calls from the community to have something done about this section of highway and so I approached the Minister for Transport and Main Roads to conduct a review,” Mr Powell said. “The review recommended that for the safety of motorists it would be advised to reduce the speed along this section. “This reduction, introduced last week, will give extra piece of mind to our community,” Mr Powell said. The Department of Transport and Main Roads speed limit review is open for submissions until September 13. Submissions can be made on their website (www.tmr.qld.gov.au) or via the post (PO Box 673, Fortitude Valley, QLD, 4006).

Opera in the Hangar to raise the roof again It’s not too often that opera and aircraft share the same stage, but after a really successful Opera in the Hangar event, held by the Caboolture Aero Club in June last year, the club has decided for history to be repeated with an event planned for Saturday, September 21. The event will celebrate the anniversary of the first Trans Tasman flight made by Sir Charles Kingsford Smith and his crew, so the club are hoping that might attract some of our kiwi brothers to head along on the night. Mount Mellum locals and aviation buffs Kerry and Prue Mason said last year’s event was brilliant, even for those of us that are slightly Kerry and Prue Mason with the tiger moth low brow compared to regular Opera buffs. “The night was great fun, everyone really enjoyed themselves”, Prue said. There will be a special performance by The Underground Opera, a professional opera company producing world class concerts in unique environments. Kerry, who has been flying all his life and his wife Prue own a Fairchild Argus, which will be on display on the evening, along with a Dehavilland Tiger Moth, a Chipmunk and an Auster. The fully restored Argus, built in 1943, was originally flown in the United Kingdom in WWII by female pilots, members of the Women’s Auxilliary Airforce, on liaison duties. Tickets to Opera in the Hangar, available through Ticketmaster, are $85.00 a head, including canapés, a light meal and drinks. A bus will also be organised from Maleny which if required can pick up in Beerwah. For more information about the bus and the event contact Prue on 0438 549 411 and email pruemason@bigpond.com or check out the aero club’s website at www.cabaeroclub.org.au

Getting Sharon some faster wheels Anyone who has seen Sharon Chamberlain rolling down Coonowrin Road at Glass House Mountains in her electric wheelchair will know that despite the daily challenges she faces from the affects of MS (Multiple Sclerosis), she definitely prides herself on getting out and about and being independent. Sharon moved to Glass House Mountains with her family in 2002 and then in 2007 her neurologist diagnosed her with relapsing-remitting MS. However it soon became apparent that it is primary progressive MS which is an unusually aggressive form of the disease. MS is a chronic medical condition that attacks the central nervous system and in Sharon’s case it has primarily damaged the nerves that control her limbs. Unfortunately there are no treatments that will help. Sharon says she just hopes there is a long time before any further damage occurs. Although, lately one thing that has been holding her back is her complete reliance on public transport. While most places Sharon wants to go to she can get there by train and bus – these journeys can be both extremely long and exhausting. Seven hour trips for a 15 minute appointment, combined with the difficulties of fatigue, being a huge problem with MS. After a couple of tricky outings recently where Sharon’s wheelchair battery played up and the local taxi was tied up (away for repairs) elsewhere for a few hours, she has finally decided that it is time to admit that having carers drive her to appointments and meetings in a wheelchair

Sharon Chamberlain (centre) with fundraising support crew, Carer May Porteous, daughter Jackie Chamberlain and Carer Jenny Miller accessible car would make life a whole lot easier. While Sharon isn’t in a financial position to purchase a car – her family and friends have joined forces to take up the task of fundraising the $15,000.00 required to purchase a second hand car which would give her much more freedom. Sharon isn’t someone that likes to ask for help, so it took some time and effort for her ‘support crew’ to convince her that it is okay for her to let the community assist. Over the years when she was well, Sharon did plenty of volunteer work at schools, cub scouts and generally in the community. So it is her time to be supported. Their first fundraising effort will be a stall selling plants, art work and books at the Glass House Markets to be held this Sunday, September 8 from 8.00am – 1.00pm at the Glass House Mountains School. If you would like to support Sharon’s fundraising efforts you can contact her directly via email shaz_figjam@hotmail.com

Contributed by Donna Turner (Chappy D) Beerburrum State School I just wanted to share some of the great things that are happening at Beerburrum State School at the moment.
As you would have seen last week in the paper the awesome scarecrows the kids had been working on. Thanks GCNews, the photos looked as cool as the scarecrows did. We also had our school concert on Thursday night, the kids and music teacher Ian Williams did a amazing job. Well done guys. Then on Friday, we had the end of our book week celebrations and all the kids and staff got dressed up in this year’s theme of ‘Space’ or their favourite book character. It was great to see everyone go to so much effort, Principal Mr Pinches and even the principal Mr Pinches came as ‘Buzz’ Heath from Prep as Buz which the kids loved. So as always it is exciting to Light Year hear what is going on in the community, but even more fun to be the chaplain and watch it firsthand. Keep up the good work Beerburrum.

PETER FIGHTS for UPGRADE to BRUCE HIGHWAY... In the last 2 years PETER has ASKED QUESTIONS and MADE SPEECHES in Parliament on “The Bruce”
Hansard Thursday 14 February 2013 House of Representatives Mr SLIPPER (Fisher) My question is addressed to the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport. Given the success of my lobbying, and that of others, resulting in the upgrade of the Bruce Highway to six lanes from Brisbane to Caboolture, and in view of the commendable investment by the government to further improvements north of Fisher, including the Cooroy-Curra section, which will save lives, when can the Sunshine Coast expect the Bruce Highway from Caboolture to the Sunshine Coast to be upgraded to six lanes, removing appalling congestion and providing road access to and from Brisbane of a similar type to that between Brisbane and the Gold Coast and Ipswich?
PETER SECURED $80.7 million for UPGRADES to the Bruce Highway and FORCED the MAJOR PARTIES to COMMIT to MULTIBILLION DOLLAR commitments to FUND FURTHER UPGRADES NOW that’s REAL ACTION REAL RESULTS!!! July / August Luncheons
Contributed by Jenny Morris Glasshouse Country View Club Both of our July and August meetings were spent celebrating new members and recognising a 10 year membership. In July we congratulated Joy Joyce for achieving her 10 year membership milestone and showed appreciation for her work with the club during that time. Our new member for July was Adrienne Holt. Two more new members joined at our August meeting – Marguerite Colledge and Trish Watts. Welcome everyone. Our guest speaker for August was Helen Hayes from Home Instead Senior Care. This program helps the elderly remain living in their homes longer with the proper help. I am sure most of our members found Helen to be an interesting speaker. View clubs are a valued part of the Smith Family which is a national, independent children’s charity committed to helping disadvantaged Australian children by unlocking opportunities through education and support. Visit their website view.org.au or check them out on Facebook. If you wish to join our club please contact Margaret on 5435 2172. Beryl Fletcher and Joy Joyce

Glasshouse Country Toastmasters Inc
Contributed by Kerry Gillam With the swearing in of the new executive committee for the club, we have been kept very busy. Our new president for this year is Esther Frizzo and she has outlined a very interesting framework for us this year. We have had the pleasure of enjoying the company of many visiting members from other clubs as well as visitors from our own area. Gweneth Brooks along with Chris Magee and Kerry Gilliam paid a visit to Glasshouse Country Care in early August. They entertained the members with bush poetry and the reading of a very funny play, bringing all the characters to life through different voices and a story about a teddy bear that had survived for 66 years with his owner and how his presence fitted in with her life. Several members have been on holidays stretching all over the world and they weave great stories of their adventures. At our last meeting on August 22, members competed in two sections of presentation speeches, speaking off the cuff on a given subject and giving their views on a presentation speech by a visiting toastmaster from Bribie Island. It was a great speech about a new bride coping with her first meal for the in-laws. Our next meeting will be at 9.15am on September 12 in the hall behind Church on the Rise, Peachester Road, Beerwah. Club members will be competing with very funny stories in the Humourous Section and in the International Speech Contest that will test the mettle of public speaking at its best. It promises to be a very entertaining morning. Make a date to come along and be thoroughly entertained. Muriel Smith, Gweneth Brooks and Ian Hope successfully placing in a Toastmasters competition

School News Shine on the Arts
The emphasis was to shine on the Arts but at this Glasshouse Country Christian College cultural event it was the students who really shined. The campus was lit up like a Christmas tree with fairy lights, lanterns, mood lights, spot lights and illuminated sculptures. Drama students put on a series of Shakespeare based plays called the Art of Love and War. Music students represented all ages from Calistra Theron plays Juliet with Isaac Cornel the Little Voices ensemble as Romeo in The Art of Love and War Scene 3 to sophisticated duets from senior students. Dance students performed beautifully and Fashion and Textile students created mini rooms with themes from all over the world. The French department put on a glorious spread of macaroons, profiteroles, camembert cheese and croutons. Galleries of paintings, drawings and sculptures adorned the walls and even Van Gogh showed up to paint a reproduction of The Starry Night. The highlight of the evening was the opening of the new Sculpture Garden designed by Art Teacher Mrs Patrice Cutlack. The garden will be used as a lunch area, informal learning activities and to showcase students’ sculptures and artworks. Primary choir sing Yellow Submarine. Reading across the universe
Contributed by K Merola Landsborough State School recently celebrated Children's Book Week. Embracing all things books, Book Week is the longest running children's festival in Australia. It celebrates books, Australian authors and illustrators. The out-of-this-world theme for this year was ‘Read Across the Universe’, which provided lots of inspiration for the week-long celebrations. Landsborough State School's library took on a new look as it was decorated in a space theme for the occasion. A highlight from the week was when staff and students arrived at school in costumes for a dress-up day. There were planets, aliens, rockets, astronauts, Star Wars characters and many other space related creatures from across the universe. Other activities included children participating in alien making craft, lucky dip books, buddy reading groups and a family afternoon tea picnic where everyone joined in the fun.

Peachester School Jewellery Auction and High Tea
Peachester School would like to thank all their fantastic volunteers for making our high tea and jewellery auction such a great success! It was a lovely afternoon filled with lots of yummy treats and competitive bargaining at the auction. Peachester families once again showed how good they are at putting on a great range of delicious food that was appreciated by all that attended. We would particularly like to thank Peachester Fruit and Veg for selling the tickets, Jewellery Auction and Sales for the donation of the jewellery for the raffle prize and for running the auction, Carrie Shaw from ‘Unika’ for providing the beautiful crockery for the high tea and the Glasshouse Country News for their great support of our event. The school is planning to use the money raised on the day to purchase new playground equipment for our senior students.
Win win for school and local business
Peachester State School will open its doors this school holidays to adult education. Local training provider, SureSkills, will be hiring the school facilities during the first week of September school holidays to run a fast track, 5 day Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. “This is a win-win situation for the school, the community and SureSkills,” said Lee-Ann Raddatz, Manager of SureSkills. Rosemary Hodder, Peachester State School Principal said that the school not only benefitted financially, but in terms of increased security as well. “The school holidays are always a more vulnerable time for schools, with the incidents of vandalism increasing. By hosting SureSkills, we will have an increased presence on school grounds hopefully deterring vandals,” she said. SureSkills Manager, Lee-Ann Raddatz is also very pleased with the arrangement. “Peachester State School has great facilities and I welcome the opportunity to utilise them. My family is part of the Peachester School community and I am thrilled to be able to work with the school in providing local training to the community, while keeping the school safe and contributing to it financially all at the same time.” To find out more about Sure Skills check out their website www.sureskills.com.au Rosemary Hodder, Peachester State School Principal, with Lee-Ann Raddatz from Sure Skills Training and Development www.gcnews.com.au
with Lea Parkes Lots of us are so busy these days that you never know when you might need to grab something to eat or drink. The good news is Matilda at Glass House Mountains is there for you - open 24 hours a day seven days a week. As well as a wide range of supermarket items, magazines, gift lines and variety goods, they have also other interesting items including a new range of electronic cigarettes - Smoke NV Electronic Vaporizers that has been described as the world’s no 1 electronic cigarette. The e cigarette means that smokers are free to choose a healthier alternative, and free to live life without the harmful effects of traditional cigarettes. They have no nicotine, no tobacco and are just pure taste. So if you would like to check out the range for yourself and see how they work, they are on the front counter near the cash register.
I am so glad winter is finally over. With more daylight hours in the day and the temperatures warming up, getting home and curling up on the couch after work doesn’t have quite such appeal. So if you are looking for a night out with some entertainment during the week – why not head to the Landsborough Hotel on the first and third Wednesday of the month for some trivia? Grab a team of four, Trivia starts at 7.00pm but you might want to also get there a little early and grab one of the two for one meal deals. If trivia isn’t your thing, Landsborough Hotel has a reputation for a great range on the menu of good quality and well-priced pub meals. Each night of the week they offer some great special deals. Meals are served at night from 6.00pm – 8.00pm Sunday to Thursday and until 8.30pm on Friday and Saturday. Remember to like them on Facebook to keep up with their latest promotions.

Upon election unopposed to be Speaker of the House of Representatives, in following the tradition of the Westminister Parliament in London where the Speaker resigns from his or her political party, I reluctantly resigned from the Liberal National Party of Queensland to become an independent Speaker in the Westminster tradition. This gave me the independence to act fairly and without fear or favour as Speaker to ensure the Government of the day was held accountable to the Parliament and thus to the Australian people it represents. I would not have become speaker if it had been necessary to maintain the Labour government in office, but it was obvious to me that the government would serve its full term weather or not I become Speaker. In accepting the Speakership I was also aware that Mal Brough was signing up large numbers of people as members of the LNP in Fisher solely for the purpose of having them vote for him at a preselection to replace me. Therefore in any event I was effectively forced out of the LNP. As Speaker I brought about reforms to the Parliament particularly to Question Time by cutting time limits for questions and answers, by permitting supplementary questions to original questions and tightening up the application of the Standing Orders – the rules which govern the conduct of Members of Parliament. I had planned to expand these reforms further both with unlimited numbers of supplementary questions to enable a forensic line of questions to be asked of a Minister and by permitting one side to ask supplementary questions to an original question asked by the other side. I sought to improve parliamentary standards, impose firm discipline and improve behaviour in the House of Representatives to bring about a Parliament of which the Australian people could be truly proud. Unfortunately in my time as Speaker, given the Ashbygate litigation, dismissed by Justice Rares of the Federal Court as an “abuse of process”, I was not able to achieve all I sought to do and thus more reform is necessary and much remains to be done.”

Peter Slipper MP Giving you Choice
The Australian 20-2-12 Point of Order , Mr Speaker After two weeks of heated parliamentary debate, the new Speaker, Peter Slipper, deserves credit for his assured handling of preoceedings in the House of Representatives. The Age 29-2-12 Speaker in the driver’s seat as battle of wills leaves “irrelevant” Gillard speechless Prime Ministers and their ministers have traditionally spent large portions of every question time avoiding what most people would recognise as a semblance of relevance in responding to questions. The Speaker, Peter Slipper, has the quaint view that questions should be answered. The Australian 23-3-12 “Fight on the hill” amid Slipper’s imposing will What is clear is that he is not afraid to impose his considerable will. This week, the more high profile ejections included Deputy Prime Minister Wayne Swan, opposition Treasury spokesman Joe Hockey and manager of opposition business Christopher Pyne Adelaide Advertiser 24-3-12 Lion Tamer Slipper brings some order to political circus “He’s (Slipper) doing an outstanding job: he’s doing it in a bipartisan way, he’s a truly independent speaker, he’s been harsh on both sides but I thank what we’re seeing is more control over the Parliament (and) greater order.” Adelaide Advertiser 24-3-12 Lion Tamer Slipper brings some order to political circus After five weeks of his stewardship the result is a markedly different Parliament

Succession Planning …….. Are you prepared? It’s something not often thought or talked about but it is inevitable that one day you will leave your business. This could be forced upon you due to health reasons or just that you decide to sell up or retire. It is important that every business has an exit plan. This will ensure that the business has a smooth transition with fewer disruptions to the operation of the business in the future. It is important to spend the time early to discuss with your family and business partners what will happen and who will take over the business, if you either leave or are not able to make decisions for yourself. It is common for company’s and trusts to have only one responsible director or trustee, therefore you need to make provision to appointment someone trusted to act on your behalf. This can be done by a Power of Attorney or through your will. Buy / Sell agreements can be put in place between partners where a life insurance policy or a trauma policy buys out the partners share if one partner dies or becomes seriously ill. Partnership agreements are legally documented to ensure everybody is in agreement. To ensure your business operates, even when a disaster strikes, natural or not, you must always protect yourself, your staff and your families through having the correct insurances in place. Not only does your business require the usual Public Liability Insurance, you may need to consider some of the following: Key man insurance / Income Protection insurance / Business interruption

Insurance and if employing staff, it is a legal requirement to have Workers Compensation insurance. Business cash flow is key to keeping your doors open. Sometimes it is not best to use available cash to fund a purchase, however maybe borrowings are more beneficial. If you are ever unsure, it is always best to check with your accountant prior to making the purchase. We can link you up with other professionals (Legal / Insurances / Financial Planning / Loans) to ensure that you are looking after all your financial needs in the one place. Repay your home loan at the “buffer” rate and save Mortgage holders could save hundreds of thousands of dollars in home loan interest if they made repayments at their bank’s “buffer” rate, according to Smartline Personal Mortgage Advisers. When a lender determines whether a borrower can afford a loan, they do so by adding an interest rate buffer of around 2% p.a. to the current home loan rate. In other words, if the current interest rate is 5.25% p.a. they will assess the ability to repay the loan at 7.25% p.a. Smartline’s suggested debt reduction strategy simply requires you to make monthly loan repayments based on an interest rate that is always 2% higher www.gcnews.com.au
than your current rate. “This is one of the most simple and effective debt reduction strategies that home-owners can use,” said Smartline Adviser Teresa Harrison. “While making higher home loan repayments might ordinarily be a stretch for some people, the historic low interest rates we are currently enjoying make this a strategy that pretty well everyone should be able to adopt. “This is especially the case in light of the fact that interest rates of around 7% were very much the norm only a couple of years ago.” Take the example of a $350,000 mortgage. At 5.25% the monthly repayment is $1932.71. At 7.25% p.a.,
the monthly repayment is $2387.62 – an additional cost of $454.91 monthly. If you were to add this $454.91 to your monthly repayments, the result would be impressive. The loan would be paid off in just 19 years and seven months, rather than 30 years. And by paying your loan off so quickly, you would save $134,993 worth of interest. Even further savings could be made if ad-hoc additional repayments were made along the way, such as any windfalls or tax returns. “While this calculation is made on the assumption that the variable rate will stay at 5.25% p.a., which almost certainly it will not, it does highlight the considerable impact that making
additional repayments has on your home loan,” Teresa said. “An experienced mortgage adviser should be happy to work with you to work out how this strategy would benefit your own personal situation.”

Being the last edition the candidates have to share their views before E- day on September 7 – we decided to include as many questions to the candidates as we could. So this week, we have a major question and then a series of yes / no questions. We hope they cover some issues which are important to our readers.

Question: What are the key core values that you / your party stands for?

‘Labor values’ is a term that is often used (and abused) and subject to much discussion. For me, my party membership of 30 years has been founded on four key principles to which our party aspires. First, we must be democratic. All voices must be heard and given due weight in formulating decisions. The primacy of the individual must always be the cornerstone of any functioning democracy. Second, we all have a responsibility to each other as a community. I believe we achieve more by working together than working against each other. It’s a spirit that is driven by the needs of the collective. Third, working people need representation. The power of capital is what drives our economy but it can be dismissive of the needs of people in the endless effort to provide returns. We live in a society of which the economy is a crucial part, not the other way around. Finally, education is the only way of giving those who follow us the capacity to deal with the changes and challenges of an ever changing world. All of these values operate in a world where we are the custodians of environment and we must be absolutely reverential to protecting it. These values give us the context for making decisions that affect all members of our community – the aged, the young and everyone in between.
The Greens have four core values: - Ecological Sustainability - Social and Economic Justice - Peace and Non-Violence - Grassroots Democracy This means caring for people and caring for our supporting environment are paramount. It also means caring for the well-being of future generations is our responsibility. Major issues threatening our core values are the growth of the material consumption economy, and global warming. The earth's ecosystems have limitations and we are fast approaching some of these. Hence, the way we view the earth and its resources needs to shift. Taking an approach which looks after communities and their economies, before big business, is a step towards building the resilience needed for sustainability. Question: What are the key core values that you / your party stands for?
Guide to voting
Mark Maguire
Voting in the coming federal election is compulsory for everyone who is enrolled to vote, so below is a guide to where and how to vote. Before Election Day – September 7 – you can vote at an early voting centre or AEC office. In Fisher, these are located at 87 Bulcock Street, Caloundra; Life Church, 6 Kawana Island Boulevard, Warana; Millwell Road Community Centre, Millwell Road, Maroochydore; 3/54 Baden Powell Street, Maroochydore. You can also make a postal vote, but you will need to apply to receive the postal voting ballot. You can do this online at www.aec.gov.au or collect an application form from a post office or from the AEC office at 3/54 Baden Powell Street, Maroochydore (phone 13 23 26). On Election Day – September 7 – polling booths open at 8.00am and close at 6.00pm. If you’re not in the local area, you can vote at any polling booth in Queensland (called absentee voting). If you’ll be interstate – check with the AEC for interstate polling centres (13 23 26). Locally, polling booths will be at Glenview, Mooloolah, Landsborough, Beerwah and Peachester State Schools, Glass House Mountains Community Hall and Beerburrum School of Arts Hall. You will receive two ballot papers – a green one for the seat of Fisher in the House of Representatives and a much larger white one for the Senate. On the green ballot paper you will need to number all the 10 boxes in order of your preferred candidates. Only numbers are allowed (1 – 10) no ticks, crosses, words or repeated numbers. If you make a mistake, it’s best to ask for a new ballot form than crossing something out. On the white Senate ballot, you can vote two ways – above the line or below the line. The ballot paper will explain all of this, or ask one of the polling officials. Voting above the line means you only have to indicate your preference with a ‘1’ in the box of your choice. Voting below the line means you number every box starting from ‘1’ against the candidate of your choice, and then continue sequential numbering through all the boxes. The choice of who you wish to vote for is purely your decision. At the polling booth, people will be handing out ‘how to vote’ cards. These are merely their suggested voting preferences – no one has to follow what the ‘how to vote’ cards suggest. And don’t feel pressured into taking them if you don’t want them. Also, those handing them out are just volunteers, supporters and family – so please show them some common courtesy. Don’t be rude to them, blame them, abuse them or harass them. If one of them is discourteous to you, report it to a polling official for them to handle. You may take the ‘how to vote’ cards into the polling booth to assist your decision making. Afterwards, it’s always a good idea to hand them back to the people who gave them to you so they can reuse them, or to you can leave them in the location marked at the polling booth.
The politics of Australia takes place within the framework of a federal constitutional parliamentary democracy. Moreover, since federation we as everyday Australians, have been fortunate to have inhaled, lived, a democratic political system, which generally has not only tolerated political disagreement, debate and difference of opinion, but which culturally, has allowed for the applause and validation of dissent. We have savoured the fruits of freedom and absence of censure. However, increasingly over recent years, many ordinary Australians have felt disappointed with, and alienation from, our political system. Many have felt unease with our political framework, for its failure to provide Australians with a voice, to guarantee that Australians are heard and listened to, to ensure that the views of Australians are respected, responded to and acted on. In recent times, there has been widespread public disengagement from our political system. Many Australians have demonstrated or voiced unhappy resignation in relation to our system, or directed vitriol towards our political representatives and parliamentarians because of the apparent cracks in it. We, the Australian Independents, seek to reverse this trend. We believe that by actively encouraging community involvement and participation in policy decision making, ensuring elected political representatives and politicians consistently and unapologetically represent their electorates and eradicating politically driven personal attacks and hate speech from public life, Australians will ultimately acknowledge, and be drawn to, the benefits of re-engaging with our Australian political system. Australian Independents stand for: Stopping importation of pineapples, establish new manufacturing industries, protect our dairy industry, job security, support small business, employing locals, not 457 visa’s, no Carbon Tax, stop privatisation of public assets, increase pension, investment in traineeships and apprenticeships, better public transport, fix the Bruce Highway, stronger borders, employment opportunities for our youth, Sunshine Coast University Hospital is Not For Sale, support Australian farmers and safer communities.

Being an Independent gives me the ability to be open, honest and transparent. I make a firm commitment on my plan’s delivery and have faith that the community of Fisher will respond positively. I also hope to find contributors to assist me in my campaign which will increase my productivity. Honestly, I need all the help I can get – any and all contributions would be very much appreciated. As independent individual people, now is the perfect time to vote your independent individual view which can only correlate with an Independent candidate. Collaboration between many individuals creates amazing outcomes and I'm seeing this on a daily basis. My point is to please make your vote count. Our parents and grandparents didn't work as hard as they have, and continue to do, so we can take the easy option by simply wasting our vote on the ALP or the LNP. My call to seniors, elders, knowledge bearers – make an investment in us young people by taking a chance on me. Watch your investment in myself and all the young people that I will be connecting with over the three year term grow. Play a part, participate even in a mentoring, advisory role over the next three years with me and determine for yourself whether we have succeeded. My call to young people – stand up and be counted. Don't sit back and expect it to come to you. Our elders have high expectations of us which I know we can meet and even surpass. Join me now! Jump on board my ‘YesYouthCan’ campaign! Let’s take it to the LNP and ALP who care not for our individual independent thoughts and aspirations as recent history is testimony to that fact.
We are not racist nor a white Australia Party. Our leader by his own words is a black man. We are concerned with what is happening in the southern States with the followers of Islam. Especially with the no go areas where you and I can’t go. We are concerned also over approaches already made to Government for Shari law to be established in these areas. We want a multi-ethnic society, but we want to maintain our culture and our law – Australian law. Islam is not just a religion. Islam has religious, legal, political, economic, social, and military components. The religious component is that which hides the true nature of Islam and obscures the activities of the other components. Islam is not a religion it is a complete, total, 100% system of life. We are also concerned with what will happen afterwards in the process of normalisation, if same sex marriage is legalised, which is why we urge, no plead with you, to visit the website www.massresistance.org We believe the ‘boat people’ are not refugees according to the UN definition, but illegal immigrants. We are therefore concerned our government has spent $11.5 billion on illegal immigrants. We worry that our foundries, steel makers, car manufacturers are closing or have closed. As an island nation how do we defend ourselves with no manufacturing industries? Tariff madness, ill conceived free trade agreements, regulations and restrictions applied to produce, when these same regulations and restrictions do not apply to imports it is causing our farmers to suffer. Red tape, a complex tax system, regulations and taxes that make it difficult to employ people. Cartels unfairly setting prices and limiting competitors are hurting our small businesses which employ the bulk of Australians. Addressing each of the above is the key core value of our party.

Family First value environmental responsibility, and support decisions that sustain the environment for all future generations to enjoy. We believe that child protection should be paramount and unyielding, protecting also a child’s natural relationships, heritage, culture and beliefs. That the defence of our country is essential and therefore requires adequate capabilities, resources and personnel that strongly feature integrity. That Australia must provide protection and support to suffering humanity which meets an individual’s basic-needs, and transitions them towards relief. That we must pioneer improvements in health, support and care to individuals, throughout their lifespan, based on need. That a fortified and supported household, marriage and family – provides optimal household health, resilience, protection and community benefit. That education and its funding design, should equip teachers with world-class resources and training as they partner with parents to maximise a child’s learning potential. That valuing our local produce, innovation and skills – supporting local businesses, drives growth, provides employment, migration and business opportunity - which ultimately result in a strong sustainable Australian economy. Family First's core values are: • A voice to the silenced • Action to the deficit • Protection to the child • Sustainability to the family • Accountability to the public • A heart to the community • A future to society and • A spirit to the nation.
Katter’s Australian Party has 21 Core Values and Principles. All are available on the Party’s website - www.kattersaustralianparty.com.au The first four for ease of reference are: 1. Every Member of the Party, including Members of Parliament, will, in making decisions, vote in the interests of their electorate, consistent with their conscience and in accordance with the following values and principles. 2. Modern Australia was founded on Christian values and a responsibility to one’s fellow man. This heritage belongs to all Australians and defines the culture of the nation. The ideals for Australian society and government should be based upon these principles. 3. Governments are accountable to the Australian people for the management of outcomes that protect and enhance both the social and economic fabric of the Australian people and the sovereignty and independence of the Australian nation. 4. Governments should develop and promise polices which maintain and advance a modern mixed economic system that will ensure economic growth, employment, equitable distribution of income, rising living standards, prosperity, opportunity and equality of access to such opportunity for all Australians, to ensure: • freedom of speech and expression • encouragement and nurturing which should not be abused by of individuals initiative and the intimidation, malice, violence or development of every persons, wilful intolerance; and especially children’s, talents • equality of opportunity; and skills to the maximum; • equality before the law; • responsibility to contribute; and • social cohesion; • respect for all talents, skills and • acceptance of personal responsibility and accountability; occupations, regardless of the • support for those in genuine need level of formal education required to acquire them. while that need exists;

Following approaches from local residents, I have nominated to provide local people with a real choice. I have been elected on eight occasions and very much appreciate the support I receive. The last 18 months have been challenging for Ingé, me and my wider family but I feel vindicated by Federal Court Justice Rares who threw out the ‘AshbyGate’ litigation as an abuse of process and in doing so made adverse findings against Mal Brough and others. I note that Brough has failed to seek leave to appeal the findings against him. The key issue in this election is the unfitness of Brough to be a candidate. I note that Clive Palmer has confirmed that Mal Brough asked him to fund the failed legal action but he refused. I resigned from the LNP to become an Independent Speaker in the Westminster tradition and had hoped that this practice would become entrenched in our Parliamentary system. I reformed the operation of the House of Representatives as I wanted to make the Australian Parliament an institution of which the Australian people could be truly proud. My achievements for local people both in the area of infrastructure and in assisting thousands of people in the problems they experience in dealing with government are matters of record of which I am truly proud. I was thrilled to secure recently $46.8 million for the Sunshine Coast Health and Wellbeing Learning Precinct, over $80 million in Bruce Highway upgrades as well as $800,000 to help develop the Sunshine Coast Regional Tennis Centre at Caloundra. I have always campaigned for an upgrade of the Bruce Highway from Brisbane to the Coast to six lanes and have now forced both major parties to commit billions for upgrades. I seek your continuing support at the poll.
In a nutshell the Liberal National Party stands for freedom. We believe in freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of association and a free press. We say citizens must be free to choose their own way of living subject to the rights of others, the laws of the land and the protection of private property. We are committed to cultivating a cohesive and compassionate community in which all may feel safe and secure and where individual initiative is rewarded. We see that initiative and private enterprise as the dynamic force of progress. We encourage work and wealth creation so that all may enjoy high standards of living, health, education and social justice. We believe the family is the primary institution for fostering the values on which a cohesive society is built. We believe in a constitutional democracy and governments that are responsible to the people, dedicated to enhancing the quality of life and fostering a society that offers opportunity to all. We acknowledge our diverse religious heritage and freedom of belief. We believe in the Westminster system of government, in parliament controlling the executive and the law controlling all. We believe in the independence of the judiciary and the separation of powers. We believe all citizens are equal before the law. We recognise federal, state and local government within the framework of federalism. We believe in a just and humane society, where those who cannot provide for themselves can live in dignity. We believe in equal opportunity, in preserving the environment, in a spirit of patriotism and we accept the necessity of defending our nation in times of crisis or adversity. We strive for a secure environment in which Australia is safe from aggression and plays its part in world security in defence of peace.

A remarkable man
Having had the opportunity to spend some time in conversation with the new ALP candidate for Fisher, Bill Gissane, I would like to commend him as the most refreshing new face in the region. Bill has had quite a remarkable career as the manager and a management consultant for several large companies in Australia and overseas. One of his achievements was with the Queensland Colonial Sugar Refining company, which obtained his services when they began expanding into areas beyond the production of sugar, including the manufacture of building materials and other products. It was during this period that Bill came up with the idea of producing fertiliser pellets, containing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium supplements for the soil and manufactured from waste products, like chicken and animal manure. Thanks to Bill this produce has swept the market for both home gardeners and commercial farming, and made life easier for home gardeners and for fruit and vegetable growers. Bill spent many years of his life in America and in sub-Saharan Africa training local people in areas like water supply and retention and raising the standards of living in these countries. Bill, a genial and very approachable fellow, came to the Sunshine Coast to retire with his family but after being a lifetime member of the ALP he was persuaded to offer his talents in the political sphere. I think everybody who has met Bill Gissane would agree with me that he has the potential to advance and stimulate this region as never before. He is not a professional politician who has spent a lifetime in politics but he has important connections with the powers that be throughout Australia. From my knowledge of him, he is a refreshing personality who will breeze through Fisher dealing expertly with the well-known problems that have plagued Sunshine Coast people for many years. I am not myself a member of any political party and never have been. But I have lived in the Sunshine Coast region for more than 40 years and I know how to recognise a good competent representative for this electorate when I see one. Rodney Lever Glass House Mountains

The philosophy of the Australian Independents Party as expressed by Dr Petersen (GCNews August 28) is admirable but, unfortunately like most politicians (would-be or incumbent), seemingly misses the point. The sole reason for the existence of Parliament is to make laws for the people, and that those laws reflect the ‘will’ of the people on the subject matter of those laws. A booklet well worth reading is ‘Your Will be Done’ by the late Arthur A Chresby - Research Analyst in Constitutional Law and a former Federal Member for Griffith in the House of Representatives. Chresby puts forward the true legal functions and duties of the institution of the Monarchy, the offices of Governor-General and State Governors, Ministers of the Crown, Federal and State parliamentarians. Politicians would do well to recall the High Court Australia case of Horne v Barber which judicially defined the legal function and duty of a parliamentarian. From this decision (which does not appear ever to have been overturned), one can easily conclude that debating and voting on strict party lines is a serious breach of the law

Reflecting the 'will' of the people
s
Despite constantly hearing about the negative side of life through our daily news on the television, newspapers, and radio etc, I still choose to believe that the majority of our fellow men are decent human beings. I often quote an elderly friend who once said, that although conflicts and war seemed to be all around us, the fact was, less than 2% of the world was at war, leaving 98% living in relative peace. I guess it all depends on how you look at things? Try as I might, to see the positive side of a certain local member who is recontesting his seat of Fisher, I cannot see even a glimmer of good! Speaking as a voter, his history of excessive spending cannot be ignored! Speaking as a small business owner…. harassment of ANY sort, cannot be ignored! Speaking as a modern woman, his sexuality is not my concern, but his sad lack of morality, honesty and decency cannot be ignored! Speaking as a mother, surely the sexually explicit texts, foisted upon unwilling recipients (which are there for all to view on the internet) cannot be ignored! The angst that I feel when I see that happy smiling face on billboards throughout the area is almost unbearable. Surely the good people of Fisher can see through his propaganda. I’ll keep trying to see the positive in people……those who deserve it! Colleen Ashby Beerwah
and in contempt of the High Court. Further, it is not an uncommon practice for today’s politicians to refer to the Westminster System and that the ‘other party’ is destroying that democratic system which it represents. It is suggested that users of that phrase do not have any clear understanding of its true meaning. It has nothing to do with the legal law of the Constitutions of the Commonwealth and States of Australia but is nothing more than the practices and usages of the various British political parties in controlling, and using, the legal machinery of the British Parliament in the interest, and for the sole purposes, of party political ideologies and power struggles! Of course, if Mr Chresby is correct in his assessment (does any politician wish to counter that opinion?), then if our democracy is to function correctly, it relies on electors to constantly and clearly inform their Parliamentarian of their WILL on any subject or issue. And therein lies the rub - are we really that interested in ‘keeping the bastards honest’?. To our detriment, probably not, but one recent example of the WILL being clearly expressed by the people is the Carbon Tax - we did not want it and it NEVER should have been introduced. When that candidate calls on you for your vote, perhaps ask whether he / she has at least read the relevant Commonwealth and State Constitutions (and I shall be asking whether he / she is aware of Chresby’s work). Unless we exercise our democratic rights then we get the politicians we deserve! That’s always been a worry! K Pullen Landsborough

Health Check McCloy Dental can help solve your sleep issues Sleep apnoea is a serious medical condition that can increase your risk of heart failure, diabetes, stroke, and high blood pressure and decrease your life expectancy by 8 to 10 years. Sufferers have a high incidence of headaches, reflux, and may grind their teeth and feel tired and ‘cranky’ during the day. Those with sleep apnoea, can spend 10 hours in bed, but get only one to two hours of ‘real sleep’. No-one can feel rested, or recover from any medical or health problem after that. The most common cause of sleep apnoea is a blockage of the airway during breathing while asleep. This blockage may be due to excess weight, the epiglottis or the lower jaw. Sometimes dental treatment, which changes the position of the lower jaw, or a night guard, can stop you from suffering from sleep apnoea. The ideal treatment from sleep apnoea will always be a CPAP machine. But not everyone wants to use one. Some lucky people will be in the group for whom repositioning the lower jaw will work. The difficulty is to determine who is in that group without wasting money and risking your health by investing in an appliance, which will not work for you.
Protect your muscles and ‘keep your feet moving’ Stepping Out Podiatry would like to introduce to you a relative new technique - Neuro-Proprioceptive taping. When we have a sore area what do we do? Generally we rub it. The pressure and stimulation simply makes us feel better! Tape can benefit patients as it increases awareness of the injured area and postural stability. Taping can also affect blood circulation to the area by providing continuous stimulation to the skin and subcutaneous tissues. Tape can be used to assist with the contraction or stretching of a muscle or it can provide structural support to the joint. Depending on the goal of your podiatrist, tape will be applied with a muscle in a stretched or shortened position, and different tension is applied on the tape during application. Taping an unstable ankle for instance, can increase reaction time and help with rehabilitation and prevention of re-injury. We now sell and utilise Rocktape within our treatments and our podiatrists Kelli and Jason are always introducing the latest rehabilitation treatments for patients. For further information and to make an appointment, please phone Stepping Out Podiatry on 1300 881 082.

Did you know that the aim of a Naturopath is to work with your whole body, to help promote the body's own innate healing ability? In this way, all conditions - chronic, or acute, will resolve themselves. In other words, as soon as your body is back in balance, your problems will resolve, naturally. Even people who have cancer are able to receive complementary support from Naturopathy, providing the best of both worlds in your treatment and making your return to good health even easier. One of the many clients Charlotte from Sage Centred has helped was Bill. “When the doctors had removed much of my digestive system due to cancer I was told there would be little time left,” he said.

Leonard will be 79!
I have always respected the work of poet and songwriter Leonard Cohen, whose intimate portraits of love, loss and death has reached generations, but discovering ‘Songs from the Road’, the DVD of his 2009 World Tour was an eye opener. Beautifully filmed featuring a wonderful group of musicians and superb arrangements of many of his most loved songs, his performance there touches me to the core. Recently, lying awake in the early morning darkness, I thought it would be nice to mark the rising sun by googling Leonard Cohen and reading some of his wise words. I happened upon some birthday celebratory notes from September, 2012 and noted an entry from Liel Leibovitz, who felt that he could best sum up what Leonard had taught him in the following lines from the song Anthem ‘Ring the bells that still can ring forget your perfect offering there is a crack, a crack in everything that’s how the light gets in.’ Or in Liel’s words: Rather than hold out for radiant heaven, we should learn to find comfort and joy in the messy and tattered and glorious lives we all lead right here on earth. One need look no further than the range of artists who have covered Cohen’s music to measure the influence his haunting work has had. Versions of ‘Hallelujah’ by KD Lang and Jeff Buckley for example have taken his songs to a much wider audience than even he might have imagined. Leonard Cohen’s 79th birthday falls on September 21 so I thought it would be nice to celebrate that with other Cohen lovers and musicians by encouraging anyone interested to meet and share his songs. The Glasshouse Musicians ‘Club’ warmly invite those who would like to hear or play some of his songs, to come along to one or both September ‘Cohen’ sessions. On Thursday, September 12 we’ll be at the Glasshouse Sports Club from 7.00pm to 10.00pm and on Sunday, September 22 at the Tea and Coffee Merchants from 1.00pm to 4.00pm. Of course there won’t just be Leonard Cohen songs on the program, as we encourage artists to play their own repertoire. Give me a call on 0419 026 895 if you’d like to be involved. Artists who have expressed their interest in performing Cohen’s music at this stage include: Ian Williams, Michael Rhoddy, Jacinta Foale, Peter Gawith, Cassie Hilbers, Glenn Stephens, and yours truly. Hope some of you might get along.

Simpson Street construction work has started as part of the Beerwah Place+ project and keep an eye out for Community Update #1 being distributed soon. In the early stages it won’t look pretty, as a large component of construction involves an upgrade of the underground services including power, water and storm water drainage. Please shop local as it will be ‘business as usual’ during the construction period and thank you (in advance) for your patience as we work toward the common goal of a greatly improved Beerwah precinct.
Cyclists on the road
I’ve heard from a number of concerned locals about cycling ‘Training Route’ signage installed along selected sunshine coast roads particularly Bald Knob Road. The yellow warning signs were recently installed as a pilot project to highlight to vehicle drivers that cyclists are likely to be sharing the road. The concern raised by locals relates to possible misunderstandings taken from the wording and I agree that they could have been written to be clearer in their purpose. I’ve added my concerns to those of the community and requested that Council update the signs concerned – you’ll see changes to the wording in the coming weeks.
Community enews
Council can now deliver information about local community events, funding and training straight to your inbox on a monthly basis. It’s a really impressive source of news that will keep you connected to opportunities, inspire you with fresh ideas and reduce the time it takes trawling the net for local information. Subscribe to Sunshine Coast Communities electronic newsletter at council’s website.
Out and about
I’ll be in Glass House Mountains at the Visitor Information Centre on Friday, September 20 from 9.00am to 11.00am, feel free to drop in and catch up about what’s happening in the community.
Jenny McKay
Division 5 Councillor Sunshine Coast Council M: 0409 450 726 Chinese culture is steeped in tradition and a recent gift presented by the Mayor of Tatebayashi, (our Sister City) to Council, carries a symbolic meaning that we can all benefit from. The gift (pictured left) is a vessel that you pour water onto, if there is too much water the vessel tips, but if moderation is used and the right amount of water applied, then balance can be found – the moral of the vessel is balance. It seems to me that every day is a fine balancing act particularly as so much happens in a day at Council. We’ve got the Glenview Road upgrade project starting in Mooloolah soon and a chance for the community to talk with Council staff has been organised for Saturday, September 21 from 9.00am to 10.30am. You’ll find Council representatives out the front of IGA and anyone is welcome to come along and have a chat about what to expect from the road works. Council’s Waste 2 Resource education program has been actively helping school kids understand the virtues of worm farming, composting and recycling. It’s an excellent program that ensures our young people learn at an early age why it’s so important to reduce, reuse and recycle. The right decision to keep the region’s two show holidays was made by Council at a recent Ordinary Meeting. Show day holidays are invaluable for our hinterland villages who rely on these special days to bring renewed energy, economic stimulus and community spirit to town. Council has also decided to remove fees and charges for not-for-profit organisations for regulated activities, street stalls and temporary events on public or private land. It’s a good outcome that will assist our many wonderful, diverse not-forprofit groups who contribute to our Sunshine Coast communities in so many different ways. www.gcnews.com.au

Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Vine
(Pararistolochia praevenosa) Readers may have heard about the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vine which is the host plant for the larvae of one of our most beautiful butterflies. However, not so well known is that the vine is listed as near threatened in the wild. This status makes it a most suitable plant to grow in your garden in recognition of National Threatened Species week which falls from September 2 to 8. The Richmond Birdwing vine will grow in most gardens and prefers moist but not wet conditions, some sunlight and plenty of mulch. While it is a vine, it will not become so abundant that it chokes out other plants. It is suitable for growing up a tree of reasonable size, or is equally happy on a trellis or fence. Small flowers appear in spring and are pollinated by a tiny fly. Help us to address the balance and plant a vine in your garden. For Threatened Species week, GMAN is offering a free vine to the first 20 people who contact us, phone 5493 0029.
For more information on GMAN nursery sales please call Gwen 5493 0029 or Yvonne: 5438 7118 or visit www.gman-inc.com.au
Open garden a hidden gem
Nestled amongst the gum trees, like a hidden jewel, this award-winning garden showcases the exotic colour and rich beauty of one of the most highly coveted and intriguing of all flowering plants – the orchid. Created with love by owners Chris and Angel O’Dempsey, Orchid Grove shows just what can be done on a fairly standard block of land, with a bit of imagination, a lot of passion and plenty of hard work. “We took care to take account of the natural lay of the land, the surrounding native vegetation and the aspect when coming up with a design. We wanted a walk through our garden to feel like a walk through the bush or a rainforest,” says Chris. “Because it’s as close as we could get to a natural setting, our orchids have been established in a natural style – on logs, rocks and trees – which shows them off so much better than confining them all to pots,” says Chris. Chris and Angel have also constructed a creek and some waterfalls on the property, which create a wonderfully soothing soundtrack when you wander around. Orchid Grove is a garden full of hidden delights – so don’t forget to look up as well as around. And don’t miss the wonderful Vietnamese and Australian herb garden!

Avid gardener and owner of Professional Weeds Solution
Weedbuster Week kicks off
Weedbuster Week is an annual community awareness campaign, held in the first week of September, to draw attention to the impacts of invasive weeds on agricultural and other industries, the environment and our way of life. In fact, our own GCNews Editor – Lea Parkes – was the Queensland Weedbuster Week Coordinator for a number of years in the late 1990’s. With Weedbuster Week 2013 now upon us (September 2 - 8), Queenslanders are urged to don their gardening gloves and get involved by busting weeds around their local community. Biosecurity Queensland senior biosecurity officer Petra Skoien said Weedbuster Week is filled with activities and celebrations aimed to raise awareness and involve the general public in weed management. “In cities and regional towns throughout Queensland, a lot of people like to spruce up their gardens in spring, so it’s also a good time for people to check they aren’t spreading weeds. “Everyone can help prevent weed spread by keeping their gardens weedfree. “When planning your garden, choose your plants carefully and purchase non-weedy plants. “You should also be careful with mulch as weed seeds can survive the mulching process. It’s also helpful to buy weed-free soil, mulches and fertilisers,” Dr Skoien said. “People should also review or develop practices to prevent weeds from entering or leaving their property to protect themselves from future weed problems. “In rural areas, weeds compete with pasture needed for livestock and agricultural crops. “Weeds can also increase the risk of fire, increase maintenance costs and reduce enjoyment of recreational activities. “Weedbuster Week presents the perfect opportunity for landowners to work out the weed control and prevention strategies that they want to conduct on their own properties over the next 12 months,” said Dr Skoien. Locally, there are many weeds that we should be keeping an eye out for. Some – such as blue morning glory – take over and reduce habitat for native animals; some – such as lantana – are poisonous for livestock; some – such as annual ragweed – cause serious human health problems; and some – such as water hyacinth – block our waterways creating problems for swimming and boating. If you’re not familiar with the major problem weeds, the Sunshine Coast Council has a fabulous booklet called ‘Our Locals are Beauties – hinterland edition’, which has a section on the local native plants we should be growing, and the weeds we need to be aware of. Copies can be picked up from Council’s customer service centre – or downloaded from their website www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au

CATHOLIC WEEKEND MASSES
Brendan Edwards Glasshouse Community Church The last few days I have spent working with my younger brother harvesting, cutting and replanting ginger on our family property in the Mary Valley south of Gympie. Sounds like a ball of fun hey? It does you good to work on the land every now and then. Spending hours on the tractor spreading sawdust over the new patch, you get to do some thinking about the deeper things in your life. Sitting around a bench with your family trimming ginger while listening to encouraging messages and the audio bible stories from the laptop has been a kind of a spiritual detox at the same time. In Ephesians, Paul says to protect yourself with the armour of God made up of truth, righteousness, peace, faith and salvation so you will still be standing after the battle is over. As we come into another election pray that our new leaders are going to do the same thing. If they put their faith in God and seek His ways, we will be able to put more faith in them and their decisions. PS. Thanks to all who came along to the Superdad's Dad's Day Out. A Lawn So Good, They’ll Think You’ve Retired
Beerwah Ladies Golf Club
Contributed by Jenny Kelly We have had glorious weather of late and this is reflected in the number of ladies coming out to play. With 74 players, our Thursday Single Stroke competition was played in 3 Divisions for trophies generously donated by Barb Saunders, Brenda Jones and Kathy Moffat. Division 1 winner was Andrea Campbell with a nice score of 71 Nett, followed by Gail Gundry on 74 Nett. Grace Ferguson won Div 2 with 72 Nett, with Joan Fletcher runner up, also on 72 Nett. Division 3 winner was a visitor from Caloundra, D. McGregor, who came in with a 71 Nett. Joy Turner was runner up with 72 Nett. NTP's went to Di Smith on number 2, Fay Wareham on 5, Val Turner on the 16th, and we had three winners on the 18th with Cindy Godfrey, Leith Barnes and Karen Kemp all putting their second shots in for a bridie. The ball run down went to 76 Nett. The Wide Bay District Golf Championships were held recently at Kingaroy Golf Club and Beerwah was very well represented. The girls played well and none better than Barb Drury, who came home the new District B Grade Champion. Barb played consistent golf over the two days to score 93 and 94 off the stick, which got her into a two way play off. Barb won the sudden death play-off on the second hole. Not only is Barb now the District B Grade Champ, she also collected the silverware for winning the Veterans Championship. Congratulations Barb. Hopefully this lovely weather with stick around for a while and there will lots of opportunities to get out on the course.

BeeGees Soccer Club - Under 13 Boys Division 2 Contributed by Coach Annette Ross Our Minor Premiers for 2013 are BeeGees Under 13 Div 2! Now for the play offs... In a compelling semi-final the team pulled out all the stops to win against a Maroochdore team who were just as hungry for victory. Special mention to Digger Arrundell, and Dylan
Mountain who played exceptionally well. Also to Jarrod Adamson who scored four goals and Tahj Kidney who scored one goal. All the boys played with determination, skill and showed great sportsmanship to take home a convincing 5-2 win. I’m proud of every single one of them. Go BeeGees!!!

VIRGO August 23 – September 22 The new Moon in your own sign launches a new cycle for you, giving the go ahead for pushing personal affairs to the utmost. The emphasis will be on your first sector, which of course, is success through leadership and drive. You will always make the best decisions based on facts. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Venus and Neptune give your heart a real, and not imaginary, pleasure. As the new Moon is in analytical Virgo you introspectively examine what has held you back, tossing away outworn self critical attitudes. A good suggestion is don’t take on anyone else’s financial obligations. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 This new Moon in Virgo can be an auspicious omen for those who are embarking on a path of higher learning. There should be a favourable effect on relations with your groups and associates. Let others assist you where possible, rather than saying you prefer to do it yourself! SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 This will be a week where the new Moon will challenge your occupation and career interests. It can make superiors notice you favourably. This is because your criticism of the old is not working and its time that all developed new business tactics. Meet up with influential people.
