Hi Everyone...

We put the call out to parents on Facebook to see if they wanted to share photos of their little preppies who started school last week.

And while many things have changed in the 40 or so years since I started school, it makes me smile that back-to-school photos are still pretty much the same.

Little ones with big smiles, fresh crisp uniforms and school bags almost as big as them getting ready to take on what will probably be a really emotional and physically exhausting day (for both student and parent).

Last Tuesday afternoon I saw one little preppie having a meltdown in the carpark outside Woolies at about 5.30pm and heard an elderly lady say to the mum: "Don’t worry, school doesn’t last forever!"

Wow, that’s right. In 2033 we will be featuring the same kids all dressed up in their glamorous graduation photos on the pages of GC&M News.

No doubt there will be plenty of great stuff packed into the time in between and I hope they all enjoy the great opportunities available to them in the coming years.

Cover Story Focus on healthy ageing A hinterland GP, who is just as comfortable in front of a microphone as he is talking to his patients, has taken on an important role in healthy ageing research at the USC Sunshine Coast Mind and Neuroscience – Thompson Institute.

Dr Sam Manger is a familiar face to patients of Ochre Health Medical Centres in Montville and Maleny where he has been working as a GP, as well as a familiar voice to many medical professionals the world over as the host of ‘The GP Show’ podcast.

The podcast often considers lifestyle medicine – anything that is not supplements, medications or surgery but includes nutrition, exercise, sleep intervention, cognitive training and mindfulness.

As a vocational medical officer in mental health at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital and president of the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine, Dr Manger is keen to implement lifestyle interventions that can be used as therapy to improve health outcomes.

His expertise in lifestyle medicine has led him to join the Thompson Institute as a clinical research fellow.

“In Australia we have a growing reliance on the medical system

due to chronic disease and the statistics we’re currently seeing are cause for increasing concern,” Dr Manger said.

“There’s a constant increase of chronic disease such as obesity and diabetes, and approximately 40 per cent of people over the age of 65 are on five or more medications.

“We know that 80 per cent of all chronic disease is preventable with lifestyle changes and I’m committed to assisting other medical professionals make lifestyle medicine a component of their care.”

Dr Manger said his work with the USC Thompson Institute involved investigating how to reduce the risk of dementia through lifestyle intervention programs and researching the causes of cognitive decline in ageing and dementia.

“We know that around 30 to 50 per cent of the risk for developing dementia is modifiable, which means we can change it through things like physical activity and social engagement,” he said.

“I really enjoy my work with the Thompson Institute. Working as a GP can sometimes be a lonely job, so it’s great to be able to collaborate with such an incredibly motivated team.”

The first major step towards locking in a 15-year visionary roadmap for Landsborough’s public spaces was taken at last week’s Sunshine Coast Council meeting, with the signing off of the longawaited Landsborough Placemaking Master Plan.

Division 1 councillor Rick Baberowski said the Landsborough Placemaking Master Plan’s development had been a collaborative process between the community and council.

“Placemaking is all about involving the community in the design and management of public spaces to create a sense of place for a town,” Cr Baberowski said.

“It is about much more than the bricks and mortar. It’s about improving our public spaces to strengthen Landsborough as a destination and encourage community and local businesses to invest in activities such as arts, events and shop front improvements.”

Through the consultation, council learned that locals wanted a Landsborough that was distinctively relaxed and accessible, balanced its rural character but still had a strong connection to nature without losing its sense of being in the Glass House landscape.

The plan highlights that a priority for Landsborough locals is for significant streetscape improvements in Cribb Street.

This will also include community and businessled improvements of shop facades, forecourts and private green space areas.

A key issue identified is for council to liaise closely with the Queensland Government to make sure the new overpass and rail upgrade doesn’t detract from the vision for Landsborough.

Council will encourage the formation of a committee of Landsborough residents and local businesses to help council plan and deliver the placemaking plan, supported by council’s relevant branches and funded by the Cribb Street streetscape program. The total budget allocation for the works is $3.6 million.

Landsborough residents, visitors and businesses can expect to see work on the Cribb Street streetscaping component of the plan to start in coming months.

The Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce held an evening to meet the mayoral candidates at the Beerwah Golf Club last Wednesday.

More than 50 people attended to hear the four currently declared mayoral candidates – Mark Jamieson, Michael Burgess, Donald Innes and Chris Thompson – outline why they think they should be the mayor of the Sunshine Coast after the March 28 local government election.

A number of divisional candidates also attended to press the flesh in their run to be elected as a councillor and to listen to the mayoral hopefuls.

In the run up to the March 28 elections, GC&M News will be your key local, credible and independent information source for all the candidates in Division 1, Division 5 and the battle to be mayor.

In the coming weeks we will be giving all the mayoral candidates the opportunity to put their case for election.

A series of features will highlight what the divisional candidates have to offer and what they promise to achieve.

Division 5 meet-the-candidates event With the retirement of long-serving councillor Jenny McKay, the contest to be the next representative for the Sunshine Coast Council's Division 5 at the March 28 local government elections is set to heat up, with a field of eight contenders nominating so far.

To give voters in Division 5 a preview of the candidates and what they have to offer, a meet-the-candidates event is set for Wednesday, February 19 from 6–8pm at the Maleny Community Centre.

Hosted by Maleny Forums, the candidates will have the opportunity to introduce themselves and discuss their platforms and will be asked questions tendered by the community.

Maleny Forums spokesperson Spencer Shaw said that of the eight candidates, seven had confirmed they would attend. “Listed alphabetically they are Clive Waring, Greg Cutlack, Greg Williams, Kiti Bruinsma, Tracy Burton, Tracie Sanim and Winston Johnston,� Spencer said. “The eighth candidate – James Grimard – had to give his apologies as he was unavailable that evening. “All residents of Division 5 and beyond are welcome to come and meet and hear from the candidates. Charles Hodgson becomes the ninth contender in the running for the job to replace Cr Jenny McKay. Charles ran for Division 5 in the 2012 election and is known for his online news and information website, 'View News'.

Fighting poverty through education Local African safari travel specialists The Infinite Horizon, based in Glenview, will co-host a special fundraising event featuring Order of Australia recipient Gemma Sisia on Thursday, March 5 at the Alexandra Headland Surf Lifesaving Club from 5.30-7.30pm.

Teena Chumbley, of The Infinite Horizon, said that in 2003 she and her husband Steve had first moved to Tanzania, which was around the same time that Gemma, who originally hailed from a sheep farm in Armidale NSW, had begun her incredible journey in establishing the School of St Jude.

Gemma began by helping just three students.

Seventeen years later the school operates across three campuses and has offered 1,800 Tanzanian students a chance to transform their lives with free education.

“Over the years, we have watched the incredible growth of this community-empowering project that is well known and well respected throughout Tanzania, both within the local and expat community," Teena said.

"We have a lot of respect for Gemma and her work and are excited to be supporting her on this incredible initiative.

“Our event, although hoping to raise money, is largely about being inspired to follow a dream.

Gemma’s story has been featured twice on the ABC TV documentary program 'Australian Story', in 2005 and then in a follow-up in 2009.

International team hits Landsborough

The Landsborough Loggers Cricket Club is excited to host two matches under lights as part of the warm up for Thailand’s team in the upcoming International Cricket Council Women's T20 World Cup. Game organiser Chris Baker said it is a great opportunity for the Sunshine Coast Cricket Association’s invitational women’s team.

The team includes Queensland Fire players Courtney Sippel and Lily Mills as well as Michaela Wrigley and Zoe Valencic, who have just returned from playing in the U18 Female National Championships in Tasmania.

“Also on the team are a number of first grade women players from Brisbane as well as local players from the Scorchers women’s team and T20 women’s competition on the Sunshine Coast who are all pretty excited about getting the experience of going up against international competitors,” Chris said.

Play will start at 5.30pm on both Thursday, February 6 and Tuesday, February 11 at the Landsborough Loggers Cricket Club on Tunnel Ridge Road, Landsborough.

The Loggers invite the community to come and watch these amazing ladies play. There will be a sausage sizzle and bar facilities available on both nights.

Large Landsborough lot to be split up A development application has been lodged with Sunshine Coast Council to split an existing 5.177 hectare block in Landsborough into six rural residential lots.

The land – situated at 1876 Steve Irwin Way (just south of the Isambert Road intersection) – is zoned rural residential so the development is deemed to be code assessable and conforming with the planning scheme.

The resulting new lots will range from a generous 6,000m2 up to 15,081m2 in size. The existing house will be retained on one of the blocks.

Access to four of the lots will be via an easement from Isambert Road, with one new and one existing driveway onto Steve Irwin Way servicing the remaining two lots.

The current block of land is the last remaining large parcel in the area which has yet to be developed.

Contributed by Arthur Trass We recently presented the Maleny Rural Fire Brigade with $2,000. Our members raised $1,000 of the funds during a busy couple of days on the barbeque at Bunnings and this was then matched dollar-for-dollar by the Freemason’s Queensland charity, Hand Pocket Heart.

Community Groups Church celebrates ten years

In 2010 a small group of people gathered for their first meeting as Church on the Rise (COTR) in Maleny. Since then the church has become a familiar group in Maleny, participating in Christmas street carnivals, Easter programs, services at Erowal, delivering food parcels to needy people and supporting chaplaincy in local schools.

The church's current pastor, Rod Jobe, is looking forward to celebrating the significant milestone with the community at their 10am service on Sunday, Pastors Rod and Rhonda Jobe of February 23 at 50 Bunya Street (Maleny Church on the Rise High School).

Pastor Rod and both previous church leaders, Pastor Hugh Perry and Pastor Barry Leask, will be speaking at the celebration service.

Today about 100 people are connected to the church with their Sunday services averaging 60 people in attendance.

Pastor Rod said the church's vision was to reach out and be a generational church with programs and services for all ages and a youth after school drop-in program planned for 2020.

“Our mid-week connection place is called The Hub, serving as a centre for the church's midweek activities and operating as a place for connection with the community and is located at 18 Coral Street in Maleny,” he said.

The Hub hosts connect groups, training programs and pastoral care and also houses the church's offices and care rooms.

It is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays and people are welcome to make an appointment or simply just walk in to receive a friendly welcome.

Christmas Tree Festival

For the seventh year Maleny Uniting Church has staged a successful Christmas Tree Festival in the week preceding Christmas Day. This year’s theme of ‘Everything old becomes new at Christmas’ was used creatively in 43 displays by local groups, individuals and other churches.

Glasshouse Community Singers 2020

The Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre was very happy to welcome the Glasshouse choir into its space in 2019. Gatherings have evolved into relaxed, fun and social sessions of singing and the group will continue to meet in 2020 with a fresh identity of the Glasshouse Community Singers.

If you are keen to try out your singing voice in a supportive, cheerful space, please join in. Singing is great exercise for your brain, boosting both your physical and mental wellbeing, and everyone has a voice so why not give it a go?

Sessions are every second Wednesday evening, beginning on Wednesday, February 12, at 6.30pm for singing to be under way by 6.45pm with a 7.45pm finish.

There is no cost for the sessions but singers are encouraged to take up membership of the Glasshouse Mountains Neighbourhood Centre. The cost is $5, renewable at the beginning of each financial year. Membership forms will be available on Wednesday evenings.

The Glasshouse Country Senior Citizens would like to welcome the new year with hopes it won’t be as dry as 2019.

The group held its Christmas lunch at the Landsborough Hotel on December 10, which was enjoyed by all thanks to the organisers.

Sadly Denice Woolley, who supplied floral arrangements for tables when visitors from other clubs visited, died on January 9.

The group's next meeting is on February 11 at the Beerwah Community Hall. A cruise from Bribie Island has been arranged for February 18.

We provide free use of computers and the internet, as well as photocopying, printing, phone use and many other services. Every Thursday, Orange Sky laundry operates at Morris House. Bring your laundry and get your clothes washed and dried free of charge.

Suncoast Legal Service operates here every second Monday evening. For an appointment call them on 5443 7827.

Morris House has a small office that is used for private meetings and counselling, tax help and at other times when necessary. As we are in a small old building, this room was very hot in summer and very cold in winter. Thanks to the amazing generosity of the Rotary Club of the Glass House Mountains, we have been able to install a split system reverse cycle air conditioner in this office. This has made a huge difference to our centre and we sincerely thank Rotary for awarding us this grant.

All our services are available when we are open, which is 9.30am-4pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and 9.30am-1pm on Mondays and Fridays. Call in and see us. Everyone is welcome.

Having trouble getting a good night’s sleep?

It’s something we hear quite often - “you need a good night’s sleep” – but it’s easier said than done. In fact, research has found that inadequate sleep is a public health problem that affects more than one in three adults worldwide.

Insufficient sleep affects our bodies and minds in many ways, including difficulty staying focussed, reduced motivation, confusion, irritability and memory lapses, weight gain and risk of diabetes, and has even been linked to increasing risk of cardiac arrythmia, as well as depression and anxiety disorders. Adults should be aiming for at least eight hours' sleep, and 9-10 hours in children and teenagers. This gives our bodies time to rejuvenate and is when regeneration, healing and memory formation take place.

So, how can we improve our sleep?

There are a number of things we can do to help get a better sleep, which come from ensuring we have a proper sleep schedule to keep a regular circadian rhythm. Setting the right temperature – between

Health &Wellbeing Diabetes: Get your support in order Be proactive and create a strong support system.

That’s the message for people with type 2 diabetes from Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Services (SCHHS) promotions officer Kerry Roach.

Sue, a local resident, was diagnosed with diabetes in 2017 and she says being proactive and the support of friends, family, medical professionals and the broader community can help achieve positive results in managing your type 2 diabetes.

“Knowing my type 2 diabetes can be largely managed through maintaining a healthy weight, ensuring a nutritious diet and engaging in regular physical activity makes me feel relieved.

Surrounding myself with the right support to achieve all this is so important,” Sue said.

When Sue was first diagnosed with diabetes, she attended a local SCHHS type 2 diabetes and me workshop.

“I am blessed that I feel well and healthy and I can still make good decisions.

The hardest thing about my diagnosis has been to accept that I have type 2 diabetes, manage it the best I can and just move on,” Sue said.

Family or carers are also welcome to attend.

The Sunshine Coast Council’s health and wellbeing program features a range of new activities from Zumba classes to tai chi, fitness classes, yoga, aqua fitness, boxing and circuit classes.

The program is designed to make it easier for more people to try new activities and meet new friends without committing to memberships or contracts.

The classes are suitable for all levels of fitness and all ages, making them a great option for people who haven’t exercised before or who have been inactive for a long time.

There are a range of new classes starting in February including seniors' strength and stability provided by Taz Calandruccio and his team at All In One Fitness Mooloolah and Beerwah.

Last week Brownie and I went to The Fat Frenchman for breakfast and I have to say the renovations that were done over the holiday break look great, creating a much more spacious and inviting feel.

You Said It Fire and clearing

There is much misinformation concerning the role of national parks and of burning off and clearing as bush fire prevention in the media recently that I would like to respond to.

National parks and reserves are absolutely essential for our future survival. These complex ecosystems are a great resource, not only for mitigation of carbon dioxide increase, carbon sinks and oxygen producers essential for our survival but also as places for diverse species of plants, animals, insects and fungi to flourish.

Clearing vegetation causes a rise in water tables and salting of soils, a lesson well learnt in the ruined wheat belt of Western Australia.

Vegetation prevents soil erosion and keeps those invaluable soils healthy. Parks are also a great source of income for the tourist industry and a source of unique species for new medical and technological discoveries, apart from being beautiful places.

National parks and conservation areas are now mostly subject to patch burning as a result of recent efforts to include knowledgeable Indigenous rangers in their management.

They also have extensive networks of firebreaks and personnel who are experts in fire management. However, In Queensland there is some mismanagement – we allow livestock grazing, horse riding and motor bikes in our parks, all of which cause the introduction of inflammable understory weeds such as creeping lantana, and erosion of fire tracks. Cania Gorge National Park is a good example.

Fire experts and CFS volunteers around Australia have already spoken out about the role of burning off, pointing out it is unlikely to do much to prevent the catastrophic fires we are seeing now.

The real cause is global warming, producing excessive dryness, unpredictable strong winds and high temperatures.

The problem is lack of action on behalf of all of us in the past on global warming and slavish adherence to fossil fuels as an energy source.

Re: Climate change

A response to three correspondents in your January 22 issue.

Roy Clogstoun rightly condemns government inaction on climate but we must remember it’s a global problem. Our climate is mostly affected by what China, the USA, India, Brazil and the rest do, not by what we do. Cynical populist or authoritarian leaders overseas are a much bigger problem than ScoMo. Yet if it could get serious Australia is wellplaced to be at the forefront of the international fight to address this unprecedented problem. Australia is stable and prosperous enough to make sacrifices where needed, has ideas for new technologies and is popular with the public in many overseas countries.

We can be influential as long as we put our own house in order.

Bruce James is spot-on about the contemptible Murdoch press. If you can overcome your nausea at the hypocrisy and dip into 'The Australian', it’s interesting that the reality of climate change is now acknowledged more readily in the business section than in most of the opinion pieces.

Shane Daly, is it surprising that some young Extinction Rebellion activists are a bit extreme? They are worried and so are military intelligence analysts, insurers, medical associations and trillion dollar investment funds. Any protest or reform movement includes a few ratbags — look at Hong Kong. It gets harder to dismiss the cause when millions take to the streets with their umbrellas. Even some of the sclerotic dinosaurs who still read 'The Australian' are no doubt quietly adjusting their investment portfolios and thinking more carefully about where to buy a holiday home.

The exceptional range of quality, local produce and innovative agribusiness we have is something we can be proud of - businesses that we should be both supporting and promoting wholeheartedly. We have so much to offer and these businesses play a significant role in making our region the unique and the great place it is.

It's certainly one of the important issues I'll be continuing to advocate for.

Here's a New Year's resolution for you - write the date the right way round! All our numbers are written in descending order to the right, thousands, hundreds, tens, units, decimals. The printed receipts show dollars to the left, cents to the right, and even the time as hours, minutes, seconds. Always, it would be silly to write it any other way. Why, then, is the date the only number we mangle? The date should be written year, month, day and then, of course, hours, minutes, seconds. There is no logical reason to write it any other way.

And don't say "that's the American way" because it isn't. It's the Australian Standard method of writing calendar dates in all-numeric form AS1120, and has been since 1971. 1971! (That's MCMLXXI.) If the Americans moved the year to the front they'd have it right but they are a stubborn lot.

The date written correctly will sort your correspondence beautifully and will show you things in a family tree timeline in Excel that are not obvious otherwise.

"Because we've always done it" is no excuse or we'd all be travelling on foot. It's one of the bits of our rich British cultural heritage that we could well do without, along with men wearing ties in Queensland's humidity.

Government spending and business confidence

The federal Coalition has privatised billions of dollars' worth of services (like jobs in the ATO, in Social Security, Home Affairs, aged care, research, private health, etc) to private companies like Serco.

Their accounts are not overseen by the ATO and they pay little or no tax. This is money slowly seeping out of the Australian communities. It affects towns like Maleny, so reliant on tourist accommodation, art and craft.

Meanwhile LNP/Coalition supporters are attacking the Queensland Labor government for its budgeting and for low business confidence. I suggest they examine how the federal government is spending our taxes.

It is unbelievable that golf, polo and yachting should have the money we might otherwise give to state budgets for public health and education.

Complaint about Glasshouse District Park

The concrete paths used in the park, wetlands and forest are not used in national parks. They use wood or natural materials. Concrete is bad for the environment and our feet.

Council uses water from a giant tank truck spraying a solid jet on native plants that grow okay in the bush without human help.

The site foreman said to me one day they were considering draining the whole first pond to use for trees and grass. This is the first highest pond and the overflow feeds to the other lower down ponds.

The mulch layer under the woodchips has no life in it, no worms and a good percentage of the plants are not native to the area.

There are no bees on the clumping bamboo ground covers or the turf they use.

So, after destroying all the original grass in the first place that could survive a lot of drought, they re-turfed and are watering using overhead spraying water trucks with 50-90% going to the atmosphere.

About six trucks per morning just to water in the grass.

If this is happening everywhere, how much water does this add up to? We are told to conserve water … how about council?

The over watering was killing the grass, flushing away the little nutrient there is in the soil. Now with the weak nutrients in natural rainfall, the grass is staying green, until drought time again.

This is not saying we should not have parks but we should do it better.

The park itself is too close to the wildlife forest corridor. The forest edge could have been extended.

None of the creeks have yabbies in them. There could have been tall grass thickets, animal exercise areas, a changeable children’s Zen garden, a parent and child interaction zone to make or break toys from go karts to dolls, worldwide indigenous art and craft areas from basket making to didgeridoos and bamboo cutting.

So, no water, no trees, no bees, no air, no humans.

Mayoral forum

I attended the event with the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce where our four mayoral candidates had the opportunity to speak to the key issues of the region.

A number of the issues raised were beyond the remit of local government, for instance, major infrastructure development to support our significant residential growth. This infrastructure is critical to our community and it is as frustrating for local government as it is for our community to be playing chicken and egg games.

As candidates and as voters our challenge is to understand what candidates are promising and what voters are expecting our local government representatives to do.

As voters we need to take responsibility for asking the right questions about the promises and approaches our candidates speak about.

What are their key commitments? Are these commitments the core responsibility of local government? How much will the commitment cost?

What will be the impact on rates? How will they ensure the broader support of council? These are critical questions for our voters to ask the people who are seeking to represent us and the candidates should have the answers.

Honesty, integrity, fairness, logic and the ability to collaborate rather than agitate are just some of the attributes that will also be very important to succeed in our council in representing our community.

It is critical for our incoming councillors - particularly in our diverse hinterland regions - to be able to navigate through the complex and ever-changing local government environment as well as the interface between our council and state and federal governments.

Business, project management and analysis skills, an independent perspective and a focus on the greater good into the future are more important now than ever before.

We need to be solutions focussed and forward looking while at the same time respecting and protecting the individuality of our villages across the region.

Can you imagine making a hot air balloon from fabric scraps, loading eight people in it (including four children) and sailing over a heavily fortified border at night? Well that's exactly what two German families did in the summer of 1979 in a daring and desperate attempt to escape communist East Germany.

German director Michael Herbig recreates the chilling story of the Strelzyk and Wetzel families who, over a two-year period, make a balloon from scratch and closely follow weather reports in order to gain their freedom. Their first attempt fails due to poor weather and crashlands just short of the border. The Stasi find the remains of the failed attempt and feverishly search for the perpetrators. We should note that during the oppressive East German regime 75,000 Germans were jailed for trying to escape and 800 men, women and children lost their lives trying to cross to the West. In a tense race against time, the families build a more robust, weatherproof balloon to enact another audacious flight. Drama is heightened for the viewer by the involvement of the couples' four children, including a baby, as the electrician and bricklayer husbands, supported by their wives, prepare to risk all yet again.

Though the direction is a little clichéd at times, nothing can take away from the courage and resilience of the two families in this gripping political thriller.

Classical chamber music event in Maleny Flute and harp duo Jonathan Henderson and Emily Granger will perform Spanish Souvenirs, a onehour recital as part of their South East Queensland tour, on Wednesday, March 4 at the Maleny Community Centre from 6.30pm.

As the name suggests, the recital program centres around the music of Spain, featuring works flavoured with folk melodies, flamenco rhythms and evocative harmonies that celebrate the rich heritage of Spain’s national dances and folk music.

Jonathan and Emily are two of Australia's most vibrant young instrumental soloists. After sold-out performances of a smaller program at last year's 2019 Craven Creek Music Festival, the duo are delighted to reunite in a full recital this year.

The duo is passionate about connecting with their audience, speaking about the pieces during the concert and playing in intimate venues.

Concert goers can experience the music up close and the evening will feature chamber music recitals of colourful music by Ibert, Ravel, Marais, Chabrier, De Falla and Bizet.

Newcastle-born flautist Jonathan, who has recently returned to Australia after nine years based in Europe, said the entire audience experience was different to large-scale orchestral concerts.

“The musicians are right in front of you, so you hear the music unfold just metres away. The Maleny Community Centre is an intimate venue so there's no need for opera glasses or expensive A reserve seating. Everyone can feel close to the music from any seat,” he said.

The old home Justine rang me with the news that the original settlers' hut we had owned in Batlow was razed in the Batlow fires. We rebuilt it from a ruin in the 1980s but the original wooden cottage was built in 1904 by her grandfather who settled there to be close to a clutch of family properties across the range at nearby Yellowin in the foothills of the Snowy Mountains.

In 1968 Yellowin was flooded by Blowering Dam as part of the Snowy Mountains Scheme but it continues to feature strongly in the extended family's history and mythology.

Justine's father and siblings were all born in what became known as the old home. In the late 1950s after purchasing each brick over many years as enough money was saved, her grandmother built a new house up the hill and the old home began to fall into ruin.

It was a standard settlers' hut - four rooms in a square with a couple of fireplaces - but it was loved and full of memories.

Because of a severe lack of space, father - Gordon Bowman Wilkinson (or GB) - and his brother Jack Bowman slept out in a nearby hut with hessian flaps for windows, while mother Ethel, her mother Nanny Bohl and the four children slept in the cottage, the children initially in bunks on an open verandah. Cold in winter in snow country.

Justine and I were music students in Berlin in the early '80s where we planned the rebuild of the old place when we got back to Australia.

I had fallen in love with it the first moment I set eyes on it a couple of years earlier. It had so much character quietly sitting there amongst a stand of huge pines planted 80 years earlier.

The sheds were still there and the old hut with iron bed frames the men slept on. The hay shed told stories too. The walls were constructed of tree slabs and kerosene drums, flattened over many years to make the walls. There wasn’t much around in the way of building materials in those days so everything was recycled.

I can still remember our builder looking at this old, falling down place and assuring us it would be easier for him and cheaper for us to push it over and start again.

We wouldn’t have that - there was too much love in this place. There are even photos we took of a dozer

trying to straighten the place up because it was so lopsided. The builder's first job was to lift each room in order to place new stumps underneath as the original timber had gradually sunk or been eaten by white ants. I know he didn’t have much love for the job but for us it meant the world.

It was a long, heartfelt restoration with us coming down from the city most weekends to work with the builder, who was a character.

I learnt not to pay him until we were just about to leave at the weekend's end, as some cash in his pocket was a good excuse for him to take the day off.

He was in his late 40s, still living with mother and taking her shopping, to church and anywhere else she wanted. Any whiff of an emergency back in town saw him shoot off.

However, it suited us as we weren’t earning much.

I was a composer and Justine a freelance music editor, so those years and progress moved slowly for us. But no regrets – I’d do it again tomorrow.

Eventually we got in other builders to help us and the home became our beautiful place.

One of my fondest memories is coming back after having spent some months overseas, finding that Justine had finally finished the painstaking job of removing layers of old paint off the walls in one room and restoring the original pine underneath as a birthday present for me.

That work had uncovered newspapers from the 1930s and '40s from under floors and behind walls that had been used for insulation. So many memories.

In the first half of the '90s I had composer-in-residence jobs in Sydney and then Melbourne so we lived in two places but our son Miles was born in Batlow.

Teaching jobs in Sydney and Townsville followed so Batlow fell away as our place of residence but I have always thought of it as our old home.

More recently it became known as the pink house – the result of an unfortunate repainting choice after we left.

Justine and I have remained good friends and, probably not surprisingly, when I gave a new lease of life to a decrepit old wooden cottage in Peachester a couple of years ago, I lovingly call it the old home.

The Glass House Mountains Hall will hold its annual general meeting on Sunday, February 23 at 4pm at the hall on Coonowrin Road. The committee is keen to encourage younger, mature people to join them in undertaking some volunteer work around the hall and attending monthly meetings on the fourth Sunday of each month at 4pm.

Last weekend my family and I were hanging out with some friends at the beach. While we were there we bought some dinner from a kebab place on the esplanade. When I was placing my order I got chatting with the owner of the shop and before long he was telling our group stories about his family, his home town in Turkey and he even showed me some photos of his town in picturesque mountains.

He cracked some jokes with us too and we all had a great time.

It got me thinking… what is it with our obsession with self? Why do we as Australians believe the lie that it is all about me, me, me? If I had made it all about me at the kebab shop I would have gone to

In the Bible Jesus taught that in all of life the most important thing is to love God with your whole being, and then he explains that the second priority is to value others just as we do ourselves (Matthew 22:36-40). There is something special that happens when people care about each other. No one can deny that it impacts both parties emotionally.

When my family and friends walked away from that kebab shop we didn’t just pay the man for our dinner, we showed him that he was valuable.

Out of all the customers he would have had on that night I am sure he would remember the fun conversation we had and the way we were interested in who he was and what he was doing.

My prayer for Glasshouse Country is that even though our population is growing that we would never stop being a community. That we would always regard those around us, our neighbours, fellow shoppers and road-users as valuable people, even if we don’t like or agree with them. That is what makes a community powerful.

Last Thursday, January 30, the game was a fourball aggregate stableford. Some ladies found it just a little too hot so we had a field of 48 players (24 pairs). Winners were Lea Doyle and Michelle Wormwell on 62 points followed by Marie Norton and Toni Grant on 61 points. NTPs: 2 – Michelle

Saturday morning training on January 25 was well attended with Vince Carbery and Sarah Widin coaching. The morning schedule was varied to refit the gutter to the playing shed. It had been blown off in a recent storm.

On Sunday, January 26 some interesting games of golf croquet were played on the awkward lawns of the main oval of the showgrounds. The club was on show at the Aussie Day Expo. Donna Manning, Kath and Wallace are all said to have played. Victories were claimed but records of scores are unavailable. Despite a few passing showers of rain, a pleasant time was had by all.

Contributed by Miles Allen It was another busy week with almost 100 players attending. The green was full for our monthly pairs’ competition and the results were close, with not much separating all the pairs. Two local teams ended up with even scores with Sally and Brian Squires declared the winners over Jim Wiedman and Dennis Kyling on a count back.

Twilight bowls on Wednesday night was full again and the new competition kicked off in style. With 12 more weeks to play some teams got off to a flying start while others are taking more of a tortoise approach. The Bridge Club won with Paul Kemp showing everyone how to get nine touchers.

The Mavericks had a close win over The Handles and The Groovers recovered their form with a comfortable win over the TTeam.

Scroungers on Friday had some close games with seven winners from five games anything is possible at scroungers! However, Curley Petersen in his first game of the season excelled with a very high score and Brett Gillis won convincingly in spite of his low handicap. Jim King broke all records on one end. All four of his bowls touched the jack, a remarkable feat and a credit to his tenacity and consistency under pressure.

Well done to all players for the wonderful spirit in which the game was played.

It is great to see more people volunteering at each event and stepping in when necessary. It is a lot better for the club if everyone contributes what they can when they can, however small that may be. It is one of the strengths of this club that so many give their time freely and generously to ensure that everything ticks over smoothly.

A reminder that our AGM is on at 9am this Saturday, February 8. A correction on last week’s report only full members are able to attend.
