DID you know the population of the region this newspaper distributes to now exceeds 40,000 people?

That’s some increase on this time back in 2006 when it was only about 26,000 - and if forecasts are correct the next decade will be boom time.

The latest census figures help us to better understand who we are and how we’ve changed (and grown) over time. (see p6 for a snapshot).

Perhaps the standout growth centre is in and around Landsborough, with a population that has increased by over 76 per cent and now houses over 15,500 residents. It’s not hard to see why: A fantastic part of the world, services to match and affordable housing (well, maybe less so at present).

I regularly ask myself how to position this paper so that advertisers - the only reason this publication exists - can reach as many locals as possible on the

By Sonia Isaacs Clark GLASSHOUSE Country Community group members came together for a special morning tea to farewell long standing community development (CD) worker Natasha Odgers.

Known for her mega-watt smile, and impressive community focused skillset that supported collaborations, connections and positive change from a grassroots level, Natasha will be greatly missed as she heads overseas for an extended family adventure.

Over the last 10 years Natasha has journeyed alongside a diverse range of local groups and organisations in her role, offering guidance, support and encouragement; including Hinterland Community Development Association of Caloundra, Morris House, Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre, Glasshouse Country Disaster Management Network and Celebrate Glasshouse Country, to name a few.

The well attended gathering held at Beerwah Meeting Place on Tuesday June 28 was an opportunity for local community members to wish Natasha well and acknowledge her tremendous contribution to Glasshouse Country and Hinterland communities. Member

for Glasshouse, Andrew Powell, said Natasha was an amazing person and community development worker who would be very much missed.

“For more than 10 years, Tash has provided the ‘community glue’ across the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. Many people in the community will now realise just how much they have relied on her over the years, especially now that she is moving on from the role,” said Mr. Powell.

Her passion, hard work, dedication and willingness to go the ‘extra mile’ is nothing short of awe inspiring. Jenny Broderick Colleague, and Glasshouse Country Community Development Program co-worker Jody Blackburn said that Natasha had a huge amount of personal and professional attributes she admired.

“Tash has an enormous amount of genuine passion for community and her skill as a community connector, her warmth and approachability will be incredibly missed,” Jody said.

“She is someone who ‘walks the talk’ by fully immersing herself in all

Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce president, Jenny Broderick, said Natasha would be incredibly missed.

Judy Tomlinson, former president of Celebrate Glasshouse Country said that she appreciated the way Natasha always looked for the potential of what was possible for community groups.

“Tash is a lateral thinker and a fun, fair and mindful presence who was always cheering us on,” Judy said.

There has been an outpouring of wonderful sentiment from many community members who have benefited from Natasha’s empathy, generosity and passion in her role over the last decade and the Glasshouse Country community wish her bon voyage and safe travels.

Transport bus fares falling

Zoo targets luxury market

FARES for most public transport users across the Sunshine Coast Hinterland will decrease from this week following a review of fares and zones across regional Queensland.

From July 4 a new fare and zone structure will be introduced across the urban bus network in preparation for the implementation of Smart Ticketing.

This will result in a reduction in the number of zones in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland network from seven to six.

The adult base fare will decrease from $3.00 to $2.40, and concession base fare decrease from $1.50 to $1.20 as part of the changes.

A consistent zonal increase of $0.60 for adults and $0.30 for concession will replace the previous zonal increases of $0.40 and $0.50 for adults and $0.20 and $0.30 for concession.

Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton said the introduction of consistent fares and concentric zone structures across regional Queensland urban bus networks would provide customers with an equitable public transport experience regardless of where they travel in regional Queensland.

“Reducing the number of zones from seven to six will mean customers can travel further for less,” Mr Skelton said. Fares for more than 90 per cent of adult and concession trips would decrease as a result of the changes.

The introduction of the Translink brand will provide customers with service disruption information via the Translink website and social media channels, newlook passenger information at bus stops, real-time information, and hand-held timetables.

“It was so important for us to make his dream come true through the opening of The Crocodile Hunter Lodge.” The Lodge includes eight family-friendly cabins, including an accessibility cabin, and offers services and facilities to suit everyone’s needs.

AUSTRALIA Zoo has launched new luxury accommodation it says has been inspired by Steve Irwin’s life, legacy and love for wildlife and wild places.

But it doesn’t come cheap. The Crocodile Hunter Lodge will cost about $1900 for a two-bedroom cabin for a two night weekend getaway.

For that price you also get unlimited access to the zoo, breakfast and a gift pack.

“Steve always had a dream that one day, people would not just visit Australia Zoo, but stay overnight, and have the immersive experience of listening to and being around wildlife after dark,” Australia Zoo’s Terri Irwin said.

Push for Beegees lighting

THE Beerwah Football Club has met with Sports Minister Stirling Hinchliffe with the aim to raise funding to upgrade lighting across the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club grounds.

State Member for Glasshouse Andrew Powell, and BeeGees president Shaun De Courcy, met the Minister in late June.

The current lighting was installed in the 1970s and is unsuitable for night matches.

The BeeGees are looking to upgrade all their field lighting to ideally be able to host evening games on all three fields, or at least two.

Mr Powell said: “Upgraded lights mean more official games, better training and safer sport.”

“And with huge improvements in energy efficiency they mean tons of savings for BeeGees, their associated clubs and the Glasshouse Sports Club.

“New and improved lights are simply a must! They’re not optional.”

The club shares their grounds with the Glasshouse Districts Cricket Club, the Glasshouse Mountains Touch Association as well as the Tibros Netball Club.

While some funds have been raised, they are well short of their ideal target.

Celebrate Glasshouse Country wraps it up By Sonia Isaacs Clark AFTER a committed eight years of raising the pride and profile of the Glasshouse Country region, the volunteer team behind Celebrate Glasshouse Country Inc. have decided the time has come to wrap up the organisation. Earlier this month, team members came together to begin the official process of winding up. Outgoing president Judy Tomlinson said with committee members aged in their 60s and 70s, the time had come to volunteer on less strenuous projects. She said she was pleased that initiatives developed by the organisation, such as the Glasshouse Country Street Party and The Hub community space at Beerwah, will continue with the baton being handed over to the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce and Beerwah and District Sub-branch who will take on these projects going forward.

“I have loved working with such a wonderful team of such passionate community minded people, and being able to immerse ourselves in everything Glasshouse Country. Our work is done, so we are happy to leave a strong and successful legacy for others to continue,” said Judy.

Run by a small team of community volunteers, over the years, the not-forprofit group has been dedicated to strengthening the identity of the

Originally set up as an incorporated organisation following the success of the 2014 Council-funded Street Party in Beerwah, the small band of volunteers went on to organise three hugely popular street parties in 2015, 2017 and 2019 which saw thousands attend the events. Judy explained that Covid put a stop to the parties, and they subsequently became more complicated to run.

“Thankfully, the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce stepped in to take over the organisation, using a professional event organiser, Shelly Le Vesconte of Jack Rabbit Events. Shelly can do what we couldn’t, which is to set up a 10-year plan, with a Street Party planned for every year,” said Judy.

The team have also left a legacy of information, having gained a federal government grant to produce Ivon Northage’s book ‘The Heritage Listed Glasshouse Mountains,’ with team member Roger Reilly working hard over a number of years to help Ivon bring his vision into being. Now on the fourth edition, the book has provided a major source of information for locals and visitors alike.

Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce president Jenny Broderick said she was thrilled that the streets of Beerwah would be ignited with excitement later this year with the Hinterwonderland event scheduled for November 12.

By Kirra Livingstone Dana Coolwell has bounced back from an upset loss earlier this year to defeat Lorenz Ladrada on July 2 by TKO in just the fourth round.

The Beerwah featherweight, who fights out of Hinterland Boxing, said it felt great getting the win and paid tribute to his coach, Steve Pitt.

“I’m just always improving on the little things in camp and always credit goes to my coach,” he said.

“We work so well together and always bring out the best in each other.”

Dana said he was excited to finish the fight in the fourth of an eight round bout, adding he was focused on following his fight plan and staying level-headed.

“It felt good getting him out there early,” he said.

“I stayed composed and smart to pick my shots to wear him down and eventually get the stoppage.”

Surge High School Rock Spectacular turns volume to 11

By Sonia Isaacs Clark MOVE over ‘High School Musical’, because ‘for those about to rock we definitely salute you’ as five talented teenage bands from the Sunshine Coast prepare to get their rock chops on at the upcoming inaugural ‘Surge’ High School Rock Spectacular.

Five local high schools have been approached by event organisers and asked to nominate a student band who will each unleash their inner rock gods at the very first ‘Surge Spectacular’, set to power up the stage at the Caloundra Events Centre on Wednesday August 17.

Beerwah, Maleny, Burnside and Caloundra State High Schools, along with Meridan State College have backed the initiative that has seen school music staff and principals enthusiastic about this unique opportunity to encourage

their students to perform on stage and develop connections through music.

This school community ‘battle of the bands’ style program has been passionately promoted by Beerwah State High school chaplain Mike Turner, who in collaboration with school staff members, local businesses and organisations has been committed to developing an exciting youth project in response to the negative impacts of COVID-19 and as a way of boosting mental health in general for young people in the region. Mike explained to GC&M News that when so many events were cancelled or postponed due to Covid over the last few years, the organising team were determined to take these adverse conditions and turn them into an opportunity to create a positive, supportive environment for young rock bands on the Coast.

“We wanted to create an opportunity for Sunshine Coast teenagers to be able to perform on stage, make Maleny High connections

with other teen musicians, and be mentored by music industry people,” explained Mike.

“The theme of the event is about young people championing positive mental health through their music.”

With support from The Lions Club of Beerwah, Sunshine Coast Regional Council and Mooloolaba Music Centre, as well as Caloundra Music Festival and Glasshouse Guitar Works, Mike said the idea was not just to put on an eisteddfod event, but to develop a series of experiences for young performers to connect with each other, tap into their potential and learn more about the music industry and its people.

“We’ve found that here on the Coast while a lot of kids play rock music or are in bands while they are at school once they leave they’re on their own, so we thought this would be a cool opportunity to help make stronger networks, build performance confidence and foster skills that would encourage ongoing development in the music industry,” explained Mike.

The main show will take place at the Caloundra Events Centre on Wednesday August 17 with tickets available soon on the Events Centre website... so watch this space!

AN award-winning expert in urban design and town planning is speaking in Maleny this month ahead of proposed council streetscaping improvements to Maple Street.

The Sunshine Coast Council has allocated $250,000 in its 2022/23 budget for consultation, planning and design of Maple Street streetscaping.

Dr Greg Mews has been invited by Maleny Forums to discuss best practices for placemaking and streetscaping design.

“If placemaking is done well, it can significantly improve a neighbourhood and community,” he said. “In essence, place-making is a transformative, collaborative process celebrating the connection between local people and places. The community’s visions and dreams for public spaces matters most in this process.”

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Services says this includes the walking track to the summit. The closure remains in place until July 29.

Challenging budget amid changing region SUNSHINE Coast Council homeowners will pay up to 38 per cent extra on their rates bill after land valuations skyrocketed this year.

About 60 per cent will see a 5 per cent or $63.50 minimum rate rise, to $1332.50 for residential properties.

Pensioners will receive a 3.5 per cent increase in their pensioner rate concession, while sole homeowners on full pensions will receive a $271 concession - an increase of $9.

Earlier this year, some Sunshine Coast suburbs found their land values shoot up by 80 per cent, almost doubling since 2019.

Mayor Mark Jamieson described the $847m budget as “challenging” amid rapid change across the Sunshine Coast.

The budget delivers a $31.8 million surplus and a capital works program of $273 million.

Councillors voted unanimously to support the budget, which includes $162 million to maintain, renew and replace roads, pathways and stormwater assets.

Sunshine Coast Council Division 1 Councillor Rick Baberowski said the award-winning multi-stage streetscape project at Landsborough would continue to strongly progress along Cribb Street.

“This is thanks to a further $1.15 million investment, providing enhanced pedestrian access and community spaces while also enhancing the town’s heritage and character,” Cr Baberowski said.

“This stage of this transformative and community driven project is funded by council, the State Government and the Caloundra South (Stockland’s Aura) Community Development Infrastructure fund.

is also expected to be a major drawcard for Beerwah and encourage healthy and active play to benefit our community with works continuing in 2022-23.

“The first stage of the $2.52 million Johnston Road upgrade at Glass House Mountains will start this year with a $520,000 budget injection.

“This will be followed by a further $2 million to complete the project the following financial year.

While parks, clubs and roads are also the focus of spending across Division 5, including a $250,000 allocation for planning the streetscaping of Maple Street.

“One of my top priorities is to keep our small communities, residents and farmers connected on our country roads,” Division 5 Councillor Winston Johnston said.

“That’s why this budget will deliver upgrades, reseals, lane widening, rehabilitations and bridge improvements to several roads including Brandenburg Road in Mooloolah Valley, Stage 5 works for Glenview Road in Glenview, portions of Perrins Road and Mossy Bank Roads in Eudlo and various roads in Maleny, Chevallum, Wootha and Woombye.

“Focusing on upgrading our road network will improve access and safety for our daily commutes and all road users including pedestrians and cyclists.

“There will also be a number of other upgrades taking place in the hinterland including track renewals at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve which covers 55 hectares of tranquil rainforest with diverse flora and wildlife.

“The Ecological Park Master Plan will move forward and the Butterfly Walk will also undergo some renewal work and installation of interpretive signage to help visitors discover new and dramatic scenery.”

Outridge family sell Maleny IGA after nearly 30 years

Senator pressures pollies to cancel forest harvest

ROB and Samantha Outridge have sold their Maleny IGA after 27 years, with the Season’s IGA network purchasing the family-owned grocery store.

The husband and wife duo said the sale after “27 wonderful years as custodians of Maleny IGA” was one of mixed emotions.

“We feel a great sense of gratitude to the people of Maleny and the Hinterland who have chosen to shop with us for such a long time,” they said.

“Thank you for supporting our business, the dozens of local suppliers and the hundreds of locals we have employed.

“If you were the parents of one of our juniors, thank you for entrusting your child with us - we loved employing them and we hope they found the experience rewarding.

“We are comfortable to be passing the baton to Seasons - they will bring new energy into the business and they share our community focus.”

Rob and Sam said they did not know what their life would be like without IGA but were hoping to enjoy a holiday before their next adventure.

The announcement of the sale prompted dozens of supportive posts from shoppers and the organisations that have been assisted by the Outridge’s over nearly three decades.

“This store is an absolute credit to everyone involved! It is a great experience shopping there and the range of products is awesome,” Robyn Tolhurst wrote on Facebook.

STATE Environment Minister Meaghan Scanlon says while she understands the community’s frustration behind moves to log Ferny Forest, the ultimate decision is a matter for the Department of Agriculture.

The State Government has proposed to harvest up to 50 per cent of the 129-hectare Beerwah State Forest, also known as Ferny Forest. The move comes two years before the forest becomes protected under national park status.

“I understand that obviously there’s a lot of people in the community who have very strong views and they have been put forward to Minister Furner, ultimately the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries will be the decision makers,” Minister Scanlon said.

Her comments came after Greens Senator Larissa Waters wrote to state ministers and local councillors urging them to cancel harvest plans.

Senator Waters reflected community anger to the proposal, writing that opponents saw it as a cynical and “last-ditch effort to make a buck before the protections come into place on 31 December 2024”.

“To allow this forest to be destroyed to make power poles would be devastatingly short-sighted,” she wrote. “(It) would fail the Traditional Owners, diverse and endangered plant and animal life, local Sunshine Coast constituencies and visitors to the Forest, and Queensland Government policy.”

The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries has repeatedly insisted that no decision has been made to log Ferny Forest despite an ‘Intention to Harvest’ notice posted at the site of the forest in late 2021.

Community owned and served for 100 years THIS month the United Fruitgrowers’ Co-operative, known as Glass House Mitre 10, celebrates 100 years of service to the local community. Recognised as the oldest registered Co-operative in Queensland, the Co-op, also celebrated 50 years in its current building at 5 Co Op Lane, Glass House Mountains.

It all began on April 16, 1922 when the first meeting to establish the United Fruitgrowers Co-op Association Limited was held by farmers at the Beerburrum Soldiers Settlement. Three weeks later another meeting was held to form a committee to carry out the details of construction of a building and leasing land from Queensland Rail. In 1924 the Co-op was registered with the ‘Primary Producers Co-operatives Act of 1923’.

That year a small shed was built and the Co-op began trading. The Co-op was formed to allow farmers to send their produce to the Cannery and markets and to buy rural supplies. But the Co-op was far more than rural supply store - it was a voice for the community through its involvement in the Local Progress Association.

The United Fruitgrowers was hugely responsible for the growth and development of the Glass House Mountains area and through meetings and working with the local council and Queensland Rail, the Co-op was responsible for many road repairs, the installation of street lights and the first speed signs in Glass House Mountains (which were paid for by the Co-op).

The current building of the United Fruitgrowers Co-op was officially opened in 1972 by Premier Sir Frank Nicklin The installation of phones, power and the rail timetable were discussed.

To this day, the Co-op still trades under the same rules and regulations, although they have had a few updates over the years. The Co-op is governed by a Board of Directors, run by staff and owned by shareholders.

The United Fruitgrowers has seen many changes over its 100-year history: In 1969 it was decided that the Co-op had outgrown its small shed and planning began for a new, bigger and better building (the one that stands today). In May 1971, the shift was made

to the new building and on April 22, 1972 the Co-op was officially opened by Sir Francis Nicklin to celebrate its golden jubilee.

Over the years, as farming started declining and the demand for rural supplies decreased, the Co-op took a huge leap of faith by joining with CRT and Thrifty-Link Hardware. This gave the Co-op the ability to stock a greater range of products and be competitive in the market.

In 2011 the Co-op joined the Mitre 10 family and has been trading under that banner ever since.

Last July, over 140,000 taxpayers had their 2020-21 tax return amended before the ATO issued their tax assessments.

While you can lodge your return from July 1, Assistant Commissioner Tim Loh said that the ATO see more mistakes in early July, as people rush to get their tax returns done.

“You can lodge on 1 July, but you are punting with your tax return by risking delays to any refund you are owed. If you forget to include everything, you may end up answering questions from the tax office,” Mr Loh said.

Mr Loh explained that the ATO pre-fill some of the information in taxpayers returns, such as wages, health insurance and interest to help individuals “get it right the first time”. This process is usually finalised by late July.

“Thanks to pre-fill, waiting a few extra weeks can make lodging your tax return

twice as likely to have their returns adjusted by the ATO.” To check if pre-filled information is available and confirm if income statements are ‘tax ready’, you can visit the ATO app or log in ATO online services via myGov. “Once the information we collect is available, all you need to do is check it and add anything that’s missing. This will give you time to find receipts from the last twelve months, which you can upload to the myDeductions tool in the ATO app, then upload straight to your tax return,” Mr Loh said.

“Waiting for the ATO to upload information means people don’t have to roll the dice when they lodge, and it’s less likely an amendment will need to be made later, which could result in a tax debt.”

Where someone feels the pre-filled figure needs to be changed, they must ensure they have the appropriate records to support the adjustment.

Peachester Garden Club’s Buckets of Hope Kenny’s Angels tee off for charity

By Patricia Bradford MONTHS of preparation have finally come to fruition for the Peachester Garden Club, which set off on convoy to Lismore in late June to deliver hundreds of wicking buckets to flood-affected residents. The initiative, called Buckets of Hope, has been in planning for some time after Club members witnessed the devastating losses for northern NSW residents. Club President, Suella Lanceley, had originally offered to take down a 20-litre wicking bucket for a friend who had been affected by the

By Jennifer Kent flooding. But the idea soon evolved and before long had gained so much support from local suppliers and volunteers that they were able to produce 100 wicking buckets. Suella said it would not have been possible without the help from businesses including Bunnings Caloundra, Duratec Australia, Weather Proof Restorations, Rumbalara Nursery and Ricky Makrell’s 20-litre Goop buckets. Club members are now holding workshops to show Lismore locals how to use the buckets.

AFTER the rain put a dampener on the original date, the annual Kenny’s Angels Charity Golf Day is now set for tee off at the Beerwah Golf Club on Friday, July 22, all in support of Endeavour Foundation.

Amanda Smyth, who along with Sonia Heilig and Susan Ellwood make up the dust raising Kenny’s Angels, shared that they are hoping to top last year’s efforst of raising over $8500.

The day will consist of 18 holes, and a chance to win some great prizes. Teams

‘The Year of Magical Thinking’

By Jennifer Kent ON Tuesday, July 12, the Maleny Arts Council presents ‘The Year of Magical Thinking’, a theatrical adaptation of Joan Didion’s memoir as told by awardwinning actor Jillian Murray. Just as Joan wrote, ‘We tell ourselves stories to live’, Jillian brings to life the highly personal, deeply moving and sometimes funny account of Didion’s loss as she faces life after the sudden loss of her husband and later, her daughter.

GC&M News caught up with Jillian ahead of her performance at the Maleny Community Centre, sharing that while it is a ‘small works’ in theatrical terms, it reaches an emotional depth to which Joan’s story brings us together, expanding our own experiences.

Jillian, you have quite the repertoire of performances, and a few awards thrown in there too. Has the stage always been your calling? What do you love about it?

What do I love about it? I suppose it’s being absolutely focussed to enter another world, and to create that world on stage. It’s part of an actor’s brain… to be focussed on what you’re doing, and feeling, and what the character is feeling and you’re always 98% there.

The other part, of course, is to deal with

the presence of the audience. I just love [the feeling of] being about to enter that world, and have the audience enter it with me. Of course it doesn’t happen easily – there’s lots of work to get there and it take a lot of grit. I look at it like a piece of music and when it sings, it’s beautiful.

How does your latest work, ‘The Year of Magical Thinking’, differ from previous performances?

First of all, there’s the practical differences… being on stage solo for an hour and a half. While it’s not my first solo performance, it is my longest and it can feel like a marathon… a terrific marathon. From the solo perspective, it is my world and it intrigues me – it’s just me on stage, with a chair and a table. [The Year of Magical Thinking] is a piece about loss… but a piece that is surprising, ironic and sometimes funny.

For all her (Joan’s) intellect, coolness and collectiveness, there’s a lot of ‘if’ thinking around the death of her husband.

Didion’s work is deeply personal, what has been your approach going into this role?

And how does preparing for a solo performance differ from other performances?

It took about four months for the text to really sink in, and then it was on to rehearsal. I’m a fan of Joan’s work and found the most enjoyable aspect is the writing, and attempting to be as accurate as I can with the text. She is a craftsperson in terms of her writing and it has an elegant style and rhythm to it. I try to honour the text in my performance – the punctuation, the ellipsis, and the rhythm.. to lift it off the page and give it meaning and life.

It’s a conversational piece, I ask a lot of rhetorical questions of the audience.. of course I want to engage with the audience.

How does your audience influence performance as a solo artist, if at all?

I really want to connect and be sensitive to what is out there, but my

club

performance is not necessarily altered by the audience, it is always artful and theatrical. Being on tour, each theatre is different, the audience is seated differently so for each theatre I change the way I focus… it’s more of a technical thing.

The main thing I love is the writing and the world it brings.

Lastly, how have you enjoyed touring regionally? Are you looking forward to visiting Maleny?

I love it, I absolutely love it. When I’m on tour it’s just me, my suitcase and script, and it gives me an even greater luxury to prepare for the performance.

It’s been so good, especially after COVID and being based in Melbourne, to be taking a beautiful show to all these different places.

I can’t wait to visit Maleny and I am actually having a talk with the audience after the show, which I only do at a select few shows. I’m a big fan of Joan’s work, so I’m very eager to hear from like-minded fans.

Placemaking and Streetscaping for a better Maleny Sunshine Coast Council has allocated funds for Streetscaping for Maple Street.

The upgrades will commence in 2023.

Later on this year, Sunshine Coast Council will be commencing a community consultation process to allow community members with opportunities to provide input into the SCC’s planning process.

Ahead of the community consultation process, Maleny Forums is holding a forum about Streetscaping and Placemaking. This will enable community members to: • Learn how placemaking and streetscape plans can contribute to the greater health and wellbeing of our community.

• Be more informed and better equipped to contribute to the SCC consultation process.

• Hear how the SCC consultation process will include a range of residents and groups in Maleny.

The guest speaker is Dr Greg H Mews, an award winning expert in urban design and town planning, School of Law and Society, University of Sunshine Coast.

Blue Light is back!

Beerwah’s Blue Light Dance Party is finally coming back after two years.

Mark it on your calendar for July 29.

We will be at the usual location at the community hall next to Beerwah Library from 7pm to 9pm. Parents are welcome to attend, or just drop the children off. No one is allowed out the door before 9pm without an adult to collect them. The event is open to all school aged children, in reality our events are mostly older primary and early secondary children.

Scams The end of the financial year is a common time for scams. Demands for payment of tax bills is a common one, recorded phone calls telling you that you will be arrested if you don’t pay and various other methods attempting to trick you into either giving money directly or giving away enough personal information for the scammer to use.

So far this year Australians have lost over $200 million to scams with over 70,000 reported in just the first four months of the year. The costliest type are investment scams accounting for three quarters of the

financial loss. The most common are phishing scams which attempt to get you to give personal and bank or credit card details. They often come via text or email and pretend to be from a legitimate business or bank. If you receive any messages asking to confirm your personal details do not reply or click on any links. If you think it may be your bank or a company that you deal with contact them directly or visit their website through a bookmark or google search. Most were property and traffic offences, also included are the results of the recent operations conducted on the Bruce Highway.

Three vehicles were reported stolen and nine assault offences.

Vale Alan O’Callaghan

By Sonia Isaacs Clark LAST month, members of the Mooloolah and surrounding communities were saddened to learn of the passing of community stalwart and long term past president of the Mooloolah Valley Community Association, Alan O’Callaghan.

A passionate advocate for his beloved hometown of Mooloolah, Alan devoted countless volunteer hours championing local causes for the benefit of the local community. As long running president of the Mooloolah Valley Community Association, Alan was instrumental in driving a number of initiatives, including securing a more substantial lease for the Mooloolah Community Centre, the establishment of a local skate park, supporting the expansion of the Community Centre to host a still thriving op shop, and along with the Management Committee team securing substantial funds toward plans to establish a Mooloolah Men’s Shed.

As a person with a disability, in his younger years Alan had been a vocal activist in the 1970s and 1980s, strongly raising awareness for the critical need for greater disability support which ultimately led to the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

Alan with former Division 5 Councillor Jenny McKay at the opening of the Community Skate Park Parliamentary speech and noted that Alan had spent decades advocating for in-home support and independent living for people with a disability - with the aim to end institutionalisation and segregation. On a more humorous note, Mr Powell joked that he was staggered that Alan never picked up a speeding fine as he raced through Mooloolah Valley in his motorised wheelchair!

Alan died on Wednesday May 11, after a short battle with cancer. Close friend and Community Centre colleague Anita Verwayen said that Alan had been in Sunshine Coast University Hospital for a couple of weeks before his passing and had been very upbeat and very much looking forward to coming home,

however sadly his condition deteriorated very rapidly the weekend before his death with the spread of an extremely aggressive form of cancer.

“Many of us were privileged to know Alan, as a close friend, esteemed colleague and past president of the Management Committee of the Mooloolah Valley Community Association Inc,” said Anita.

“He was just an all-round ‘decent human being’ and the Mooloolah Community is poorer for his passing.We can just see him walking through the Pearly Gates to shake hands with other recently passed Mooloolah identities Bryan Harris and Michael McMahon who are already in residence!”

A private cremation occurred followed by a community wake held at the Mooloolah Public Hall on May 28 attended by over 100 people. Alan is survived by his wife Suzanne, daughter Bridget and son Daniel.

His special interests include whole of person and community wellbeing, lifestyle medicine, health coaching, mental health, diabetes and heart disease, new models of care including shared medical appointments and community classes, research and teaching. Outside of medicine, he loves living with the land and practicing permaculture, meditation, wim hof breath techniques, functional movement and of course spending time with his family.

Dr. Charlotte van Eck is passionate about providing holistic antenatal, postnatal, paediatric, elderly care, family medicine and chronic disease management. As a member of the Australasian College of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine (ACNEM) she strives to address the nutritional and environmental aspects of health and well-being. She studied medicine at the Catholic University of Leuven, in Belgium, specialised in General Practice in the Netherlands and Tropical Medicine and Public Health at the Prince Leopold Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp, Belgium. She has worked and trained in South America, supervised a mission hospital in Africa, worked in General Practice in the Netherlands and supervised medical students and registrars as a GP in Australia. She is a fellow of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) since 2013. She is thrilled to be part of the Fig Tree Medical Maleny team and looks forward to a long future caring for the Maleny and Hinterland communities.

Enjoys antenatal care, women’s health, paediatrics, mental health and continuing the care of those suffering from chronic diseases. Dr Ann-Marie studied medicine at the University of Western Australia (UWA). She completed her internship on the Sunshine Coast then moved back to WA and worked at various hospitals in adult care, obstetrics / gynaecology and paediatrics. She has worked as a GP in Caloundra and Aboriginal Health in WA. Dr Ann-Marie has studied her diploma in obstetrics and gynaecology, as well as paediatrics through the Child Health Program. Outside of medicine, she enjoys going for walks with her young children, playing tennis, travelling and dining out.

Had a practice for 25 years on the north side of Brisbane. Upon semi-retiring, Dr Booker has continued to practice on a part-time basis. Dr Booker is interested in many areas of medicine including mental health, acupuncture, chronic headaches, women’s and children’s health and preventative medicine. He considers himself a generalist striving to improve the health of the people he consults.

Long term Maleny resident, Dr Jocelyn Eggins has worked in Maleny since 2002 and at Fig Tree Medical Maleny since January 2022. Beerwah Kindy’s street library

By Jennifer Kent INSPIRED by the sheer joy of reading, Beerwah kindy kids, families and staff were excited to finally unveil their new community street library last month.

The bright coloured library is there for anyone and everyone to contribute or take books to enjoy, with the kindy community eager to share the love of reading with the whole community.

P&C president Jen Burgess said it was a “labour of love” which began during the 2020 lockdowns, and they were excited to see it finished and now being enjoyed by the whole community.

“Our heartfelt thanks to the Burness and Barton families who worked

collaboratively on the construction process helping to bring our idea into a reality,” Jen shared on behalf of the kindy.

“We would also like to thank Andrew Powell MP for donating his time and being on site for our opening ceremony.”

So how does it work? It’s as simple as taking a book (or two) to enjoy and when you’re done, either return it to the library or pass it on to a friend to enjoy.

The next time you’re passing by, pop a book in for someone else to enjoy.

Under 8s at Landsborough State School

ON WEDNESDAY June 22, Landsborough State School hosted a free fun-filled morning for children aged under eight and their families.

There were lots of happy smiling faces and wonderful sunshine, which fed the enthusiasm of the celebrations.

Youngsters were entertained with an array of activities including a jumping castle, petting zoo, games, face painting, art and craft activities, gardening and special guests.

Talented students ride the magic carpet LANDSBOROUGH State School has entered a whole new world with its recent musical production, Aladdin Jr. The school hall was transformed into an Arabian oasis as this popular and celebrated Disney stage show was brought to life.

Principal Benjamin Gaske said the school’s biennial musical productions were always popular with parents and the wider community.

“It is a ‘whole school’ performance, giving every student time to shine on stage. It’s a phenomenal experience for them,” he said.

“They also get an idea of how much dedication and commitment is required

before you actually get into costume and perform on stage.”

Aladdin Jr was chosen as this year’s musical from school community and student voting. It was a perfect choice as there is an underlying message in the story of Aladdin, which resonates with primary school aged children. It reminds us that our true character and worth lies within, and that if we continue to aspire towards our dreams, and work hard while remaining true to ourselves, we may reveal our inner magic for all the world to see.

The school would like to thank everyone who joined them on this magic carpet ride.

Celebrating Under 8’s Day

Beerburrum gets an A+ for sailing on the high Cs REMEMBER the days when school communities knew everybody’s name?

Beerburrum State School is still one of those communities. Staff, students, and families have many opportunities where they can come together and on Thursday June 23, they did just that to celebrate Under 8s Day. The day is designed for children from toddlers to eight years of age and their parents, to participate in

a morning of outdoor activities that encourage playfulness, spontaneity, exploration, imagination, and fun!

Playgroup children, preps, Years 1,2 and 3 students complete a series of fun outdoor activities. The theme of the day was ‘Pirates!’ and activities ranged from digging for treasure in the sandpit, walking the plank and even searching for treasure in the school’s expansive kitchen gardens.

A perfect day for Beerwah State School youngsters THE BEERWAH school community celebrated Under 8s day in the glorious morning sun. Students and families enjoyed the opportunity to explore, discover and appreciate the natural world. It was so lovely to see students strengthening their fine and gross motor skills through movement, testing their physical limits and most of all the opportunity to get messy.

Long table dining experience set to excite locals and visitors By Sonia Isaacs Clark ARTISAN food producers Sara and Markus Bucher, from Obi Obi Dairy and Maleny Cheese, are excited to be partnering on three unique culinary events during the Curated (Side) Plate Festival which kicks off on Friday July 29. The 10-day foodie-fest will feature local farms, restaurants, tourism and event operators serving up a feast of food and beverage experiences to entice locals and visitors to enjoy the gourmet abundance of our region.

Partnering with bespoke dining event team ‘People, Plates & Places’, Sara said she was very much looking forward to showcasing her produce at two exceptional long table outdoor dining events on Friday July 29 and Sunday July 31 as part of the festival.

“This is a way to connect with our community, and new and existing customers while showcasing and celebrating our food producers in this beautiful food bowl called the Sunshine Coast,” said Sara.

Billed as ‘The Third Plate: an exclusive hinterland culinary experience’, both lavish long table events will run for five hours and feature a sustainably sourced six course menu with premium wine pairing. Guests will have the opportunity to meet the producers and learn more about how their dining experience has been grown, produced, and created. Dressed to Nines at Rotary changeover Contributed by Paulette Steele THE 2022 Changeover Dinner of Maleny Rotary Club was held at the RSL Hall, Maleny on June 30.

The invitation asked people to ‘dress to the nines’ and many did just that even though it was a cold winter’s night.

Roly Neiper, a past president himself, performed Master of Ceremonies duties for the evening and made the evening a relaxed and enjoyable one.

Greg Williams, having served as President of the club for two years, which he did admirably especially as it

was during Covid times, was ready to hand the helm over to Paulette Steele.

Paulette has already agreed to be president for two years and on the night there were a few people hinting that she may like to commit to it for three years, which she clearly stated would not be happening.

A special presentation was also made to John Whan who has been a Rotary member for 50 years. Jim Atkinson, Treasurer, did the presentation as he joined the Maleny Rotary Club in 1983 when John was president.

THE official launch of The Rangebow Festival at The Banana Bender Hotel kicked off in style on Wednesday June 30. The event’s major partner Sunshine & Sons helped to introduce festival characters with The Sunshine Sisters first on stage strutting their glam before the Volcanic Goddess had guests all hot and hotter. Mr Zany, Mr Cane and Mr Barista rocked and rolled with unbridled hilarity and style with the audience submerged in exuberant costumes,colour and entertainment.

The Rangebow Festival runs over four big days from August 10-13, with more than 30 events across The Range. PEACHESTER CWA Branch and Peachester History Committee joined forces on Saturday 18th June to commemorate the QCWA centenary and launch a new exhibition “A Woman’s Work…” in the Peachester Heritage Centre.

It was wonderful to see many old friends and descendants of early CWA members, and the afternoon tea was rated well up to traditional Peachester standards!

The new exhibition in the Heritage Centre, supported by a SC Council Heritage Levy grant, pays tribute to the generations of women who have worked tirelessly - often unheralded - for their families and community. It also celebrates the Bill Morgan, Ron Gillinder, Jocelyn Morgan and role of the QCWA which has provided support and fellowship for country women over the last 100 years. Actors sign up for date with Dylan Thomas

A large, enthusiastic band of actors from Maleny Players gathered at the Showgrounds Playhouse recently to audition for A Date With Dylan Thomas, for a production (26-27-28 August) combining an original drama about the iconic Welsh poet with an active performance of his radio play Under Milk Wood.

The drama script by Maleny author and playwright Jill Morris highlights Thomas’s illustrious but short career against the personal background of outrageous behaviour and a wildly romantic marriage to his wife Caitlin.

The setting of the first half of the show is a BBC Studio in the 1940s. The

second half visits the mythical Welsh sea-coast village of Llareggub (‘bugger all’ backwards), which is filled with eccentric characters.

Hinterland village residents will relate to the village ambience. Actors gathering in the little local theatre (pictured) saw the connection between the Date With Dylan Thomas show and their own village lifestyle.

“I’m amazed at the huge local interest in Dylan’s work, which I have loved ever since the 1950 as a student of drama, and I’m glad the actors like my writing about him,” said Jill, who is being joined by co-director Barbara Thomas, in a show that will include Celtic songs and music played on a dulcimer.

We had some damage to our property, and I looked for a Handyman in the Beerwah area and found an advertisement in the Glasshouse Country News for ‘The Helpful Home Handyman’.

I contacted Owen and requested he inspect the damage and give me a quote for the repairs. Although the task was a little bigger to what he normally did he supplied a quote and start date. Seed to table memories

My wife and I were very interested in the story of the School Gardening at Peachester. It reminded me of an experiment I did with my school children at Macquarie Fields Seventh Day Adventist School in Sydney while I was principal there in 1983.

We had a designated piece of the school yard dedicated to a gardening programme like at Peachester, but we did a complete “from seed to table” experiment. With the senior children helping, we prepared the soil and planted the wheat seed.

In due course the seed struck and we had lines of wheat plants growing which needed water and care as the plants grew. In a couple of months the wheat plants all developed heads and when the heads were fully developed and ready we harvested the wheat plants and hung them up in our garden shed to fully dry.

When they were fully dry we took them down and threshed the heads to get the grain. This was an interesting process but we ended up with quite a harvest of lovely grain, separated from the trash.

The next thing we needed to do was to grind the grain into flour. Fortunately my wife had a small flour mill which we used for this step. With my wife’s help we were able to make the flour into a dough with some yeast and a little salt, in the school classroom.

Then I brought over a little portable oven from our place, and we baked the dough into some loaves of bread right there in the classroom. The baking bread smelt so lovely!

When the loaves were ready and had cooled down, we were able to slice the loaves and we all enjoyed the delicious results of our “seed to table“ experiment.

The children would always remember this practical lesson.

Look out for speeding bikes

I would like to draw Council’s attention to a potential risk of injury or death at Skippy Park.

On Saturday, June 24 2022 at about noon I took my dog for a walk at Skippy park. It was a glorious day and being lunchtime the park was well attended with numerous families with children. Children were riding bikes and scooters around the bike track, there were also some sedate older bike riders and others besides myself walking dogs around the criterion track. There was also a disabled man using a mobility device walking around the track. However, there were also four young bike riders dressed in full rig riding at full speed around the track, supervised by adults at the gates. They were obviously either racing or training for racing. As a GP working in Beerwah with a concern for public safety I could only conclude that we were one false move away from either serious injury or death. If a child or a dog had unexpectedly run out in front of a speeding bike disaster could have occurred.

I approached the supervising adults about the perceived danger of speeding bikes around children and dogs and was told in no uncertain terms that they had as much right to ride at speed as I did to walk my dog.

I was under the impression that speed racing was restricted and that permits were required as Skippy Park is not a dedicated cycling track but rather a public facility.

I have no problem with cyclists using the park for racing – it is a bike track after all.

I am also aware that some bike clubs run competitions there at specified times and

by permit. I am happy to accept that and will avoid the park when these events are being held. My conviction is that speeding bikes, children and dogs do not mix. It does not seem in the interests of public safety to allow speeding bikes when the track is open to public use.

Is it Council’s policy to allow speeding bikes at any time irrespective of use of the track by the public? If it is then I hope your public liability insurance is well paid and that you would be prepared for the adverse publicity that would arise from a serious interaction between speeding bikes and children or dogs.

Perhaps you could clarify for me and the general public Council’s policy on bike racing at Skippy Park.

The hippies, it turns out, were right. Most of us live more respectfully of the planet now because of them, but let’s continue the push to change our governance into truly democratic institutions that care even more deeply for people and planet. ELECTED State Budget response

YET again, we have a Labor government budget of broken promises and missed opportunities. How does this budget deliver for the Glass House electorate in four key areas - health, housing, education and roads and public transport? It doesn’t. There is one silver lining - an additional $1.64 billion in operating funds and $28.5 million in capital funds for mental health. I welcome this announcement as every Queenslander knows someone experiencing mental illness.

But Glass House, I am sorry to say, I do not see anything in this budget that will address housing affordability or our local rental crisis. I see no new funding for road projects in the electorate, like the upgrade of Maleny Kenilworth Road. I see absolutely nothing for the heavy rail from Beerwah to Caloundra to Kawana to Maroochydore, despite the former Morrison federal government putting $1.6 billion on the table. Glass House, and indeed all Queensland residents deserve so much better than this.

10 years rehabilitation at Nambour Selangor NAMBOUR Selangor Private Hospital is celebrating its ten year anniversary in July for inpatient rehabilitation.

Hospital CEO Justin Greenwell said it’s impressive to see how these rehabilitation services have expanded over the years, led by an experienced group of rehabilitation specialists.

“Thank you to Dr Peter Georgius, Dr Catherine Macintosh, Dr Neala Milburn – and both Dr Vanessa Harrington and Dr Tony Tampiyappa who have been here since the beginning as geriatricians with rehab focus,” he said.

Allied health manager Ben Robertson, who has been at the hospital since 2003, said rehabilitation services now include day programs and also outpatient services via Ramsay Health Plus.

The multidisciplinary allied health team based at Nambour Selangor Private Hospital has grown to around 20 full time professionals, in addition to the specialised nursing care and therapy so vital to the patient rehabilitation journey.

“We’ve got a mix of physios, occupational therapists, speech therapists, exercise physiologists, social workers, dietitians, allied health assistants, we’ve also got a consultant psychologist – which allows us to

provide that holistic multidisciplinary approach to care,” Mr Robertson said.

Patients come for rehabilitation at Nambour Selangor for a variety of reasons including general reconditioning, Parkinson’s patients, neurological including post-stroke or brain injuries, and after a long hospital stay.

“Really anybody who’s not managing to be at the level they were before an injury or fall or surgery – we’re looking to build them back up and give them as much of their life back as we can,” Mr Robertson said.

“Patients come to us through their GPs or through a hospitalisation, we just need a referral to one of our rehab physicians.”

With easy ground-level access from Nambour Selangor’s main front reception, the rehabilitation unit includes a reception area, gymnasiums, several consulting rooms, and a variety of equipment and technology to help enhance therapies.

Charity is not just clowning around Contributed by Roz White IT’S NOT every day that an entire community joins forces to support a common cause, but on June 23, every single business in Mooloolah dug deep for Mix FM’s Give Me 5 campaign. Some 30 businesses from across Mootown donated time, raffle gifts and vouchers as part of ‘Dollar Day’ - a day totally dedicated to raising funds to support child health services on the Sunshine Coast.

This year, Dollar Day was bigger than ever before. IGA Mooloolah was the lucky winner of a live broadcast with the team at Mix FM, and the local community showed up in force.

With special appearances from Sunshine Coast University Hospital Clown Doctors (and a rather authentic looking Austin Powers), the community BBQ working overtime, and clown and doctor dress ups as far as the eyes could see, it was a morning to remember for the IGA crew and community alike.

Local nursery flourishing FROM a side hustle to a flourishing business in the heart of Landsborough, Hinterland Foliage boasts an ever-growing range of trending and much loved plants as well as locally made pottery.

Owner Troy Beck shared there’s nothing better than wandering around a nursery with a local coffee in hand on a sunny winter’s day and is pleased to be able to bring his dream of owning his own nursery in the local area.

“I started out mainly online in the early days, but had always had a goal of having a shop front,” Troy said. “COVID actually gave a big boost to the plant industry and then our current premises became available last year… and now we’re looking to expand in the coming months.”

Troy shared the reception since moving from online-only to shop front has been really well received, “it’s great talking to the local community and getting to know them – everyone is so friendly and approachable.”

Winning the war on weeds

IN THE last edition, the Sunshine Coast Council had a full page spot where they highlighted the importance of gardeners keeping an eagle eye out for weeds and invasive plants… many of which have been garden plants in the past, and some still are.

This is a great initiative from Council, and one I hope they become more proactive with, especially by continuing to provide information on weeds via similar contributions to this great local paper.

Gardeners will be familiar with some of the old landscape favourites – like asparagus fern, mother-in-laws tongue, Singapore daisy, impatiens, fishbone fern, African tulip tree, Sheena’s gold, umbrella tree and water lettuce – which have jumped the fence and threatened our environment, agricultural lands and waterways.

But there are so many more emerging threats that sometimes, as a thoughtful and responsible gardener, it’s hard to keep up and make the right plant choices.

And the broad brush strokes taken by most gardening TV shows and magazines, which try to cover the whole of Australia, can just muddy the waters.

Even the ABC’s Gardening Australia program is often criticised for talking up the benefits of a particular plant but just make a sweeping statement like “can become weedy, check with your local authority”.

The Nursery and Garden Industry Queensland have been instrumental in an industry initiative called Grow Me Instead.

Based on an interactive website – www.growmeinstead.com.au – each state is treated differently with specific information on good and bad plants.

The Queensland sub-page goes even further by dividing the state into subbioregions… so the information is super specific.

It’s worth a look to see what weeds are local problems and what non-weedy alternatives you could grow instead.

The other good tool for a responsible gardener is a good and reliable weed identification book.

My go-to book is ‘Weeds of the Sunshine Coast’ by Joan Heavy and Sonia MacDonald.

It’s a super resource that’s easy to look through and has large clear photos to help you identify that triffid taking over your garden.

JOHN MCGRATH – NEW HELP FOR HOME BUYERS UNDER ALBANESE GOVERNMENT Elections create uncertainty and people do tend to delay major decisions until after the event. So, there’s a backlog of activity that will filter through the market over the next couple of months.

Both sides of politics offered new or extended assistance packages for first home buyers – and other buyers, too – during the election campaign, so let’s look at the detail of Labor’s commitments.

Help to Buy program

Help to Buy is Labor’s shared equity housing policy. The Federal Government is offering to pay up to 40% of the purchase price for new homes and 30% of the purchase price for established homes – not only for first home buyers – but also people who do not own their own home currently but may have previously.

So, under this scheme, the government will co-own your home with you.

You’ll need to contribute a minimum 2% of the purchase price as a deposit

and qualify for a loan for your equity share with a participating lender. You’ll foot the bill for all the buying costs, like stamp duty and conveyancing fees; and all ongoing costs, such as council rates, strata levies and other bills.

As time goes on, you’ll be able to increase your ownership by purchasing equity back from the government, when you can afford it, in minimum 5% lots at a time.

There will be no rent to pay to the government on its stake, you will just have to make the normal monthly mortgage repayments on the loan for your stake. The government provides the following examples to show the savings for buyers: • For a regional Queensland home buyer purchasing at the price cap of $500,000 with 40% equity, mortgage repayments would be about $850 cheaper per month1 Help to Buy will be open to 10,000 Australians per year. As is customary,

there will be income and purchase price caps to ensure only low to middle income earners benefit from the scheme. After all, the idea is to make home ownership more accessible to a larger group of people in the community.

The income thresholds will be $90,000 for singles and $120,000 for couples.

• In Queensland, the cap will be $650,000 in Brisbane and regional centres like the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast; and $500,000 elsewhere

Regional First Home Buyer Support Scheme

This scheme will pretty much operate under the same main rules as the existing First Home Loan Deposit Scheme – now renamed the First Home Guarantee – but it’s for regional buyers only.

To jog your memory, the First Home Guarantee allows first home buyers in Australia’s cities and regions to buy a new or established property (under regularly revised price caps) with a 5% deposit and a government guarantee on the rest of the 20% that the banks require for new loans.

The First Home Guarantee and the Regional First Home Buyer Support Scheme will have the same income caps of $125,000 for singles and $200,000 for couples.

In the Federal Budget handed down by the Coalition in March, the First Home Guarantee was expanded from 10,000 places per year to 35,000.

The Albanese Government will offer an additional 10,000 places under the Regional First Home Buyer Support Scheme.

While we’re on the subject of government and property, it was reported last week that the NSW Government is planning to include stamp duty reform in its upcoming budget.

The change will centre around giving buyers a choice of either paying an upfront lump sum in stamp duty or an annual land tax of a few thousand dollars instead. The idea was floated in 2020 by NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet, who was the NSW Treasurer at the time. A public consultation followed.

Stamp duty is a ridiculously expensive tax, and now so absurdly high that it disincentivises moving and punishes those that do. In a robust economy, people need to be able to relocate easily to be closer to a new job or school, or to upsize or downsize as per their life circumstances.

We’ve seen the stimulatory effect of removing or reducing stamp duty with first home buyers, so we know it works.

I’ll be interested to see the detail of the proposed reform in the budget.

Three generations of Landsborough Tennis Club magic Contributed by Dan Black Landsborough Tennis Club is very proud to have three generations of the Schouteten family as members.

The patriarch Andy Schouteten has been playing for much of his 82 years and still has a most fierce forehand and sublime backhand up his sleeve.

John, Andy’s son is definitely no slouch either. An extremely competent player in his own right and is an extremely proud Dad of two wonderfully talented up and coming tennis players on the Sunshine Coast, Tom and Ben. Ben Schouteten, one of the young guns from Sunshine Grammar, is off to Rockhampton to compete for the School State Championships.

He recently took out the 2022 Elite tennis International Open Series and has just received his coaching accreditation from Tennis Queensland under Clint Fyfe head coach at Sunshine Grammar.

Beerwah Bulldogs play at home for NAIDOC round

By Kirra Livingstone THE Beerwah Bulldogs held their NAIDOC Week commemorative round on Sunday July 3.

The day started off at about 9:30am, where local Indigenous man Craig Werribone and his group of Indigenous dancers performed a Welcome to Country and cultural dances.

By 10am, the first game of the day began, which was the Beerwah Bulldogs open women’s side against the Kawana Dolphins.

Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the women lost in the first of five senior games at the Kennel.

Beerwah coach Rod Kerr said although the team got several players back this week, they did not perform as well as he had hoped.

“Their kicking game wasn’t the best, actually more so the defence, they were kicking but then Kawana would run 25 metres,” he said.

The team also lost an additional two players last week, with one of the two most likely be out for the rest of the season with an ankle injury, Kerr said.

The game started strong for the Bulldogs, with centre Courtney Lockwood scoring the first try in the right corner 10 minutes in, but she missed the conversion.

From then it went downhill for Beerwah, with Kawana scoring three first half tries, which were all successfully converted.

In the second half the Doggies were left scoreless, with the dolphins dominating with another three

converted tries.

The last try was a crowd favourite, with Kawana kicking to Beerwah after their set, before a Dolphin’s player stripped the ball off the Bulldog 10 metres out from the tryline and scoring.

The final score for the women’s game was 36-4 in favour of the Kawana Dolphins.

Following the under 18’s, C Grade and the reserve grade, the Men’s A Grade game was played at 4pm, being the last game for the day.

The Beerwah Men’s also struggled against the second-placed Kawana Dolphins.

The Doggies were kept pointless in the first half, with Kawana scoring two converted tries in the 4th and 22nd minute.

In the second half, Kawana scored a converted try just four minutes in.

Beerwah responded with their first try of the game, scored by halfback Mathew Kidd.

With six minutes to go, the crowd was convinced second-rower Tom McClure scored Beerwah’s second try, however, the ball was handed over to Kawana instead.

The final score was 18-4, with Kawana being victorious, and Beerwah copping their second loss in a row.

Bowls Queensland Test series returns after two years THIRD time’s a charm for young Glass House bowling prodigy Chloe Runge who has been selected to play for the Under 18s Queensland side against NSW in August.

Chloe will be joined by fellow local Jack Chirgwin, who is also in the Under 18s squad.

It marks the first time the Origin series has gone ahead since 2019 due to Covid-19 interruptions.

Chloe, who had been selected twice prior to play for Queensland only to face the disappointment of pandemic cancellations, is now primed to make her debut for the state.

“I’m really excited to finally be playing, it’s my last year in the juniors as well,” she said.

“I haven’t been bowling as much because I’m now working five days a week, so I haven’t had time to get out and bowl.

“I even discussed that with the Bowls Queensland, and they still picked me.”

The 17-year-old said she has been playing since she was 10, thanks to a neighbour and an uncle who asked her if she would like to play.

“I like socialising with other people, and travelling around to different places, and getting to know more about the sport and new people and what they do with bowls,” she said.

Preparation ahead of the series, which will take place on the 20th and 21st of August this year at the Chermside Bowls Club, has already started.

“Most of us message and meet up or organise games with each other throughout the year in preparation for the actual squad,” she said.

“I’ve been even speaking to the other people in the team, so you know what they like to do and how they like to play so when you get out there you are all on the same page.”

The Australian under 18 championships will follow the state bowls series.

A GLASS House Mountains State School teacher has just been appointed the Australian Women’s roller derby team manager for the second year since 2019.

Team manager, teacher and roller derby player Kylie York said she went through a range of emotions when she found out she had been appointed again.

“I was still a bit nervous that I wouldn’t get it, but of course I was super excited when they rang to say that I had been appointed again,” she said.

“I am a little bit overwhelmed, it’s a big responsibility but it’s an honour to manage a team that’s representing your country.”

She said she was never a very sporty person before she started playing roller derby in Darwin with her family six years ago, but now it’s a great balance alongside being a classroom teacher.

“I actually had no intention of ever playing the sport but once I saw it and realised how incredible it was, we just had to be involved in it, it’s a pretty empowering sport to play,” she said.

“I find it’s really good for being a teacher because all day long you are being very careful and then you go to roller derby and it’s something physical to take your mind off it.”

Although the job is exciting for Kylie, it is a very important job which comes with responsibilities such as ensuring there’s enough

funding.

“Basically, my job is to organise all of the behind-the-scenes stuff including organising the entire tour, so our flights, accommodation, everything to go with organising the team,” she said.

“The biggest thing for managing a team is the expense involved, and although we are nationally recognised

by Sport Australia as a national team, we don’t have any funding at all.

“We are trying to reduce the cost for athletes, so we are looking for sponsorships for business names on uniforms or anything to do with supporting the team.”

The team is expected to be picked and ready to start playing together by October this year.

Family affair at the Beerwah Bulldogs THE Beerwah Bulldogs A grade side is full of related players, which helps develop a bond within the group, making them a stronger team.

Bulldogs’ halfback Mathew Kidd is one of four brothers in the team, with their coach, Brett Hill, being the father of one set of brothers.

Mathew said he thinks playing with family is a great advantage for their team and spoke about why he loves playing with his brother.

“It’s good to play with Daniel, it makes me even hungrier to win a grand final because you don’t really get to win many football games with your brother alongside you,” he said.

“I personally love it… it’s kind of a sense of security out there for me, knowing that I have a brotherly bond there, so it makes me confident in the way I play, because I know they always have my back. It’s something pretty special.”

Mathew and the team in action

Mathew has been at the club now for quite a long time - 17 years to be exact - and said the Beerwah Bulldogs has always had a different feel to other clubs, in the sense of its family-feel.

“I think that’s a big thing about the club, that a lot of people see Beerwah as the outsiders, we are not really like any other clubs in the comp, but inside the club it’s like one big family,” he said.

“Me and my older brother were actually going to go to Kawana, but it didn’t really suit us, and we ended up coming back to Beerwah.”

The Beerwah halfback has been successful in his own right having been picked in the representative 47th Battalion team this year to compete, but unfortunately he was unable to play due to sustaining a wrist injury the week before.

He is also quite clear about his love for the club, using any spare time he has available to help junior bulldogs improve and grow as young players.

“I’m just trying to focus on Beerwah a lot at the moment, I was actually coaching the under 13s team at the start of the year but work’s been too busy, so I had to give that up,” he said.

“I’m really just trying to help out the local juniors and boost them up so they can become A grade players when they come of age.”

Glasshouse talent is jumping to success NINE-year-old Glasshouse Christian College student Hayley Wall has excelled in her first equestrian interschool state championships.

Hayley competed in Toowoomba in late June at the Equestrian Queensland Hygain Interschool State Championships.

The Year 4 student, riding her horse Black Layce had a stellar competition, riding in the 60cm Primary Class and the 70cm Primary Class.

Over three days she held her nerve as she competed in three different jump courses: the Am5, 2phase and A2.

She was also competing against the

weather with cold, windy and at times rainy conditions making for tough going.

But Hayley and Black Layce rode their little hearts out against the competition, which included students from Prep to Year 6.

One of her courses started at 7am and the last was at 5.30pm but with hard work and beautiful horsemanship they won the overall Primary Champions for the 60cm and the 70cm.

Hayley is likely to complete in the 80cm class or higher next year, with the opportunity to go to Nationals if she continues to perform to her potential.

Out with the old, in with the new THE Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club is undergoing a rebuild of its deck, which is expected to be completed within weeks.

The deck won’t be a refurbishment of the timber deck spectators have come to love, but will be built on a concrete style structure for an important reason.

It will now be concrete-based due to reasons of sustainability for the venue, ensuring the future deck won’t deteriorate as quickly as it did as a timber deck.

Club president, Steve Forster, said the structure’s long-term longevity was critical given the significant volunteer contributions that keep the club alive.

“The sports club in itself is reliant heavily on volunteer labour… hundreds of volunteer hours go into that place every week,” he said.

“The mindset at the moment is trying to get that place to a sustainable point.”

Steve also said they were able to fund the rebuild thanks to a $35,000 grant gifted from the Community Gambling Benefits grant program a few years ago.

“Unfortunately, the project hasn’t been done as soon as we hoped for due to covid interruptions and floods and all those sorts of things that have been more pressing at the time,” Steve told GC&M News.

The deck is currently closed to spectators until final construction is complete.

Beegee’s determined to keep season alive

New Landsborough Tennis Club president set to launch free ‘Junior Aces’ program NEW Landsborough Tennis Club president Dan Black is launching a new initiative this month that will allow children to play for free.

Dan said he couldn’t wait to get involved in the leadership of the club, saying he was focused on building members, championing juniors and upgrading club facilities.

With experience in behavioural science, media and also martial arts, Dan said there were a number of initatives ready to roll.

“We are going to be doing quite an extensive revamp of the club facility which includes the upgrading of the kitchen and spending about $30,000 on refurbishing the front two courts which is going to happen in spring,” he said.

“My focus is to not only upgrade the aesthetics of the club, but every part of the club to build the member base…

“I also want to focus on the junior programs which is a real passion of mine working with kids and developing their skills.” Dan’s relationship with the club began when his twin sons starting to play this year, but he is now ‘all in’ and launching a unique junior program next month at their Family Fun Day. initiative is Junior Aces - a free program which allows families who may struggle financially to get their kids learning tennis - you don’t even need a racket.

“The whole idea, which is a real first in the state, is providing a fully-funded series at zero cost so even if a kid doesn’t have a racket, we will provide them with one,” he said.

“There’s nothing like it that’s been offered on a professionally run basis,” he said. The program will be funded by businesses around Maleny and Landsborough including Maleny Credit Union, Landsborough Pub, and Landsborough IGA. The Family Fun Day will be on July 24, which is when the program is officially launched and will also have rising tennis stars, a mini doubles tournament.

THE Beerwah Glasshouse United Football club premier men’s side hasn’t won a game this year, but the team remains optimistic of turning the season around.

Team captain, Isaac Harrison, said a large part of their sluggish start has been due to strategy and the lack of cohesion between old and new players.

“We had to realise we aren’t going to be the fastest or have the most physicality, but we have got to start using our heads more,” he said.

“Some of the guys on our team are fresh faces and don’t have a rapport with the referees and other teams yet.

“I’m optimistic because with the right commitment levels, I think in a year we will be completely unrecognisable.”

Isaac said a positive for the team was the high number of siblings and Indigenous players, which made them unique to other men’s premier teams in the competition.

“There are about three or four pairs of siblings, and we also have seven Indigenous boys… There’s probably like one Indigenous guy in the other team, I think one team has got a Goanna’s player,” he said.

“It’s pretty cool, you sort of tip the balance in the team with the majority of people being Indigenous, a lot of boys

ask questions about culture, it’s a real eye-opener for those players.

And Isaac hopes the strong presence of Indigenous men and women in the premier football teams at Beegee’s will influence other young Indigenous people to try football over other sports.

“I think we are trying to be a community, a focal point for Indigenous people is to maybe consider football, instead of AFL or rugby, which is what we are more associated with,” he said.

“11 per cent of rugby and AFL players are Indigenous, which is pretty crazy since we are only 2.8 per cent of the population.

“There’s a lot of opportunity in football nationally as opposed to the other sports.”

For their upcoming match against Caloundra FC, who are currently fourth on the ladder, Harrison said they were aiming to remained focused for the full game and not lose their team structure.

“This game, we are just going to hopefully keep the same formation going that we’ve been working on all season and play with our heads,” he said.

“We need to keep it steady, think positive and keep talking to your teammates.”

The Beegee’s premier men’s team ended up drawing 1-1 with fifth placed Caloundra FC. Beerwah remains at the foot of the ladder in 9th place.
