CALOUNDRA

Hi Everyone

T

his week we have included a story spreading the word about Glass House Mountains local Steve Graves and his mate Everard Schenk of Caloundra who are participating in the 2014 Sh#tbox Rally. The car can’t be worth more than $1,000.00 and it will be pushed to its absolute limit, testing the endurance of both the car and the fellas, across a 4000km journey, all in the name of fun and fundraising! The fellas are really keen to participate and are determined to work hard at their fundraising activities. They just have the additional cost of transporting the vehicle across the country before they get started – so they are hoping to get 12 sponsors to purchase a $100.00 sponsorship each to make this happen.

I love the whole idea of their journey – but there is no way I could ever imagine taking on such a crazy challenge, so I kinda feel that by being a sponsor, a little bit of GCNews will be making that journey with them. The fellas have been busy working on the car to make sure it is road worthy so they can get it registered – which I imagine is not an easy task on a vehicle that can’t be worth more than $1,000.00? If you would like to join us as sponsors and get behind the guys please contact Steve Graves by phone 0407 110 760 or email gravesfam@ bigpond.com Regards,

Landsborough’s World Champion By Greg Brown

It’s not every day that you get to meet a current world champion in Beerwah. So when Stephen Pitt from Hinterland Boxing Club (HBC) rang to say that Brett W. Smith (‘Handful’), WBF World Champion trains at the Beerwah gym and asked, would I like to interview him, it wasn’t a difficult decision. Brett, 32, who lives at Landsborough, won the WBF Lightweight World Championship last November. “I started boxing for a bit when I was 14, but life got in the way and I stopped for a while,” he said. “I came back at age 26 and boxed as an amateur, where I won a few titles, including being twotimes national Golden Gloves champion.” Since Brett turned pro, he’s had a pretty impressive record – 17 wins (eight from KO’s), two defeats and one draw. Brett works as an electrician in Brisbane, where he trains a few days a week at the renowned Coorparoo Boxing Gym and is thankful that he has the Hinterland Boxing Club so close so he can spend more time at home with his new family. “I’ve got three full time jobs now – being an electrician, being a boxer and being a dad – so I need to manage my time well,” he said. Brett’s success can be put down to his raw talent combined with his strong dedication and unbelievable work ethic, says Stephen Pitt. “I’ve known Brett for many years now, and his success is an absolute credit to him,” said Stephen.

The HBC crew admiring Brett’s amazing collection of title belts “His commitment and drive is what makes him step up from being a good fighter to being a great fighter. “Having Brett workout at HBC here at Beerwah is an inspiration to the other young boys and girls who come here to train. He shows them that, with some hard work and intelligent planning, they too can make something of themselves,” said Stephen. Brett also holds the IBF Australasian Championship belt and this Saturday will be fighting for the IBO Intercontinental Championship at the Mansfield Tavern. Beating his rival – fancied Mexcian Fermin De Los Santos – will then give him the chance to contest for the IBO lightweight world title belt. “It would be a dream to hold both world championships,” said Brett.

Bright future for young apprentice Back in September, GCNews brought you the story of Glass House Mountains resident Clem O’Mara who was the most recent recipient of Acclaim Apprentices and Trainees Apprentice of the Quarter award. Well, since then Clem has now taken out the award as Acclaim Apprentice of the Year. Some readers will also remember the photo that appeared of Clem on the front page of GCNews a few weeks later, racing his go-kart and taking out the state championship. While we haven’t had the opportunity to interview Clem and his boss at Hanson Construction, we’ll make sure the story is in next week’s edition.

Is your pregnancy not as ‘glowing’ as you imagined? We’ve all heard of the ‘pregnancy glow’. It’s that magical time when expectant mothers are preparing to bring a new life into the world. Unfortunately, not all women feel so magical during this time. Back pain, tingling down the legs, reflux, and soreness between the shoulders are all things that regularly accompany pregnancy, leaving mothersto-be feeling not as amazing as they hoped! Additionally, these discomforts can be signs of ‘intra-uterine constraint’. Pelvic misalignment causes the tightening and torsion of muscles and ligaments, which can have a constraining effect on the uterus and prevent the baby from comfortably assuming the best possible position for birth. The good news is, there is an explanation for these symptoms. The technical term is ‘Spinal Subluxation.’ It means there is part of your spine or pelvis that is partially dysfunctional because your 4

| MARCH 5 2014

vertebrae are locked in an improper position. The second part of this good news is that once you learn about these subluxations – you then have a path to feeling better. A good chiropractor works with you to ‘unlock’ the vertebra that are out of alignment – so your body can then adjust to a new, healthier position. The Webster Technique is defined as a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment that reduces interference to the nerve system and balances pelvic structures, muscles and ligaments. This has been shown to reduce torsion in the uterus, allowing optimal foetal positioning in preparation for birth. It is strongly recommended by the International Chiropractic Paediatric Association that this specific analysis and adjustment of the sacrum be used throughout pregnancy, to detect imbalance and optimise pelvic biomechanics in preparation for safer, easier births.

Business feature

Because of the effect the chiropractic adjustment has on all body functions by reducing nerve system stress, pregnant mothers should have their spines checked regularly throughout pregnancy, optimising health benefits for both the mother and baby. Both Dr Braxton and Dr Julie from Adjust to Life Chiropractic are ICPA Webster Technique certified chiropractors, and have undergone extensive post graduate training in pregnancy and paediatric care. New wetland wonderland for Beerwah The Coochin Creek Bushland Group has secured an $8,500 grant to create a new wetland adjoining the Upper Coochin Creek Environmental Reserve in Beerwah (behind Woodgrove Estate). In a cooperative effort, the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network (GMAN) and the Coochin Creek Bushland Group will be working with Sunshine Coast Council and SEQCatchments to turn a weedy drainage line into a healthy wetland habitat as part of a regional strategy to improve the condition of the Pumicestone Passage. Susie Chapman, SEQCatchments Community Partnerships Manager, said that that this project was one of a number of projects worth $100,000 per year that focussed on the Pumicestone catchment aiming to reduce nutrient and sediment run-off to the waterways, and is part of the Healthy Country program, funded by the Queensland Government for the productive and responsible use of the State’s natural resources. “We’re pleased to provide funding to groups such as the Coochin Creek Bushland Group, to enable them to tackle localised projects which, when viewed at a landscape level, can have significant effect on improving water quality,” she said. “There are also other agricultural-based projects being funded as part of this project, which are helping farmers to make improvements which will also add to the health of the passage.” When the project kicks off – which will be very soon – Coochin Creek Bushland Group organiser Roger Callen explains that the level of cooperation which will take place will be extensive.

Top work Adam

Adam Purvis of Landsborough was working in Real Estate until six years ago when he decided to become a property valuer. These days Adam works for the large national company Herron Todd White, in their Mooloolaba office and his territory covers the Sunshine Coast Hinterland including the Glasshouse Country area. Over the years he has developed a great reputation with local real estate agents, vendors and bankers. Recently his dedication to the job paid off when Herron Todd White recognised him as the National ‘Valuer of the Year’. Adam and his very proud wife Nicole, who is a property Manager with First National Real Estate Beerwah, attended the awards ceremony in Melbourne.

“Council will be providing the initial weed control, along with supporting the group to run and provide practical guidance from their staff,” Roger said. “GMAN are taking care of the accounts for us, and will be growing as many of the local wetland plants as possible. “We’ll be looking for willing volunteers who are interested in helping to look after their local environment. “And SEQCatchments are providing the funding, as part of the Queensland Government funded program,” he said. Anyone interested in joining in and giving the group a hand can contact Roger on 5494 6278.

Twelve months ago Kylie had a career change into an administration role and Kylie will be staying on working with the new owners. "Locals who know Kay, our very valued long time staff member, can still expect to see Kay’s friendly face as she’ll be helping out when others take time off," said Joan. “We would like to take the opportunity to thank our staff both past and current for their help and consideration over the years,” she said. “Also a big thank you to our customers for their support over the past 31 years. It’s been a pleasure to work in a small town where the pace of life is slower and we get to know our customers personally. “Finally we wish Brett and Julie well in their new venture.” Brett and Julie are settling in well to the new role and see the massive life change as an adventure. They have moved from Foster in Victoria, leaving behind their four adult children and are looking forward to the challenges of learning a new business and becoming part of our local community. They knew the moment they drove into Glass House Mountains that they instantly loved the town, and they were fortunate to find the perfect home in Beerwah. Both of them come from retail background and really enjoy working with people, so they’re now keen to get to know the local community and provide a great service to their customers.

Joan and Wally purchased the Post Office from Stan Greaves in 1983, in the previous 58 years it had been run by members of the Greaves’ Family including Stan’s Aunt and Uncle Alf and Dorothea Whitehead, Stan and May Greaves, and May's brother George Bowen. Joan and Wally had previous postal experience in Talwood west of Goondiwindi, where they operated the local Post Office and 24 hour manual telephone exchange before taking over the General Store and Post Office at Glass House Mountains. "In the past 30 years all aspects of our lives have changed and the Post Office has had its fair share of ‘progress’ some good some not so great," said Joan. “On the first day of Wally’s training with Stan, he took along his paper roll adding machine, Stan referred to this machine as ‘new-fangled technology’, however no one could have envisaged the advances in technology that were to follow,” she said. “Computer technology was expanded into country Post Offices in the 1990’s, we built the new post office in 1999 to accommodate this technology and to include a retail shop to service the population growth of the area.” Wally started the first mail delivery service in Glass House Mountains in 1986. This was at the instigation of the postal department and the department’s personal were amazed that the delivery service was not well received by many of the locals. “It was part of the local’s morning ritual to drop off children at school and pick up mail and daily papers,” Wally said, “so they weren’t keen on the change at all.” Wally and Joan are looking forward to being fully retired, over the past few years they have taken time out to travel which was made possible by family members Lisa and Kylie stepping up to manage the Joan Tucker with new owners Julie and Brett Wogan-Browne business in Joan’s absence.

Originally mail was sent via Cobb & Co through Bankfoot House, but in the late 1800’s the railway came to Glass House Mountains and from 1907 postal business was handled by the Station Master. Emmanual and Emily Greaves with their son Stanley purchased the town store from the State Stores in 1922 and moved the building from its site on Coonowrin Creek (now known as Scotts Road) to Coonowrin Road on the Western side of the Railway Stations. Around that time the Post Office was moved from the Railway to the shop and Emily Greaves’ brother Alf Whitehead arrived from England to become Post Master. In 1936 the Greaves built a new shop on the ‘new’ Bruce Highway (now Bruce Parade) which included a Post Office which Alf Whitehead ran with the help of his white Dorothea until his death in 1957.

Stan Greaves was appointed Post Master on September 12, 1957 and was assisted by Mrs Whitehead until 1962 when ill health forced her to give up work in 1961. May Greaves then assisted Stan. In 1968 Stand and May built a new Post Office in front of their home on the opposite side of the Bruce Highway (now Bruce Parade). May remained as assistant until her untimely death in 1970 when her brother George Bowen became assistant until 1981. Wally and Joan Tucker purchased the Post Office from Stan and took over from April 1, 1983. Construction began on the current Post Office building on April 1, 1999 and was open to business on May 24, 1999. www.gcnews.com.au

Tick trouble

By Anne Snell

Did you know that the incidence of tick borne infections is on the increase in Australia? Here in Beerwah a small group meet for one hour each month to share information with those who suspect they might have a tick borne infection. Lyme disease was first recognised in 1975 after researchers found unusually large numbers of children were being diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in Lyme, Connecticut. They discovered that most of the affected children lived and played near wooded areas where ticks live. It is an infection caused by bacteria (spirochete) that infects humans who have been bitten by infected ticks. Tick borne infections exist in every country around the world - if left untreated they become a much more serious health issue and much harder to eradicate. A few months of antibiotics might kill a newly acquired infection before it is disseminated throughout the body, but once established, these infections can invade the immune system and become very difficult to eradicate. Most Australians with tick borne infections will have chronic disease as a consequence of their infections going unrecognised and untreated for decades. Lesley McLeod is one person affected by this disease and she is concerned that others may be suffering and being misdiagnosed as she was. Lesley says misdiagnosis is common when it comes to tick borne infections because our medical students are not taught to recognise the clinical signs of these types of infections at medical school. “We are at the beginning of a long journey to bring medical recognition, training and education of tick borne infections into Australian mainstream health,” she said.

So how do you know if you may be affected? Symptoms can vary enormously but can include a target shaped rash around the bite site in the early stages of the disease. “Tick borne infections have a wide and varied presentation within our bodies,” said Lesley. For a full list of possible symptoms check out www.lymedisease.org.au/ about-lyme-disease. Currently there is a display at the Beerwah Library focusing on young children with tick borne disease and disability. There is information on the impact it has on educational and developmental milestones and the health issues that manifest along the way, Lesley said. The group are raising money for further research into the disease. “We have a local raffle of over $100.00 worth of health care products that have been purchased here in Beerwah to support local business. “Tickets are $2.00 and if your business would like to join in the raffle we would like to ask a different local business to draw the winner of each raffle we hold. "If you’d like to assist by placing the prize in your shop for a week, please let us know as we would love to involve your customers in this excellent cause and prizes,” said Lesley. If you would like to contact Leslie call 5494 0968. If you have concerns for yourself or your children, drop in to the Beerwah Library on the second Tuesday of every month from 1.00pm - 2.00pm and talk to Leslie or Connie. There are displays with information about the disease in the library at all times.

Introducing Constable Susan Lowndes

Constable Susan Lowndes may be a new face at Beerwah Police Station, but many readers will recognise her as a long-time Landsborough local. For the past 18 months Constable Lowndes was based in Gladstone, returning home on her days off, and over the last month she has been happy to have her feet permanently back on home soil. Before joining the Queensland Police Service, Constable Lowndes was very involved in the Landsborough Community and participated in the Hinterland Community Development Association. So when the opportunity came up to take on the role of Crime Reduction Officer at the Beerwah Police Station, she felt it was a great fit all round. “Unfortunately the role has not received the attention in the past 12 months it should have, due to staff illness,” she said. Constable Lowndes said she is really keen to ensure that she can achieve great outcomes in the role. As part of the position, she will be available to go along and talk to community groups as well as being involved in educational initiatives such as road safety awareness. She will also be the ‘Adopt a Cop’ at each of the local schools as well as being involved in www.gcnews.com.au

James Cran will begin his Civil Engineering (Honours) with credit for two subjects he completed successfully as a Year 11 student at Chancellor State College. His university experience will also be boosted by a $20,000 Renouf Family Scholarship, one of two awarded at USC this semester for high academic achievement, leadership skills and financial need. James said he was surprised to get such a big scholarship and looked forward to giving top priority to his studies, rather than paid work. He recently returned from a month’s mission in Kenya, where he helped at an orphanage on building projects such as school desks and shelving.

Community News Glasshouse Country View Club

Contributed by Jenny Morris As part of our New Year membership drive, View is looking for newly retired or community-minded women to join our local club. Glasshouse Country View club has around 45 members and in 2013 we celebrated 10 years fundraising, sponsoring Learning for Life students and supplying student stationery school packs each year to children in the Caboolture district. We have interesting and fun outings on the first Wednesday of each month. Some of our outings we have had over the years have included a visit to the newly revamped Brisbane City Hall, Strathgordon Clydesdales and Shetlands at Woodford, movie days, and Melbourne cup luncheons to name a few. We then meet for a monthly luncheon on the third Wednesday of the month, our guest speaker for our next luncheon will be local councillor Rick Baberowski who will be answering questions and enlightening us to what Council has in store for our area. If you would like to come along to the luncheon to meet the group and find out more about the group please phone Rosalea on 5438 7910 or Heather on 5493 0555. Lunch will start at 12.00noon with Rick arriving at 1.00pm. The guest speaker for our February luncheon was Dick Cijffers, Director of Journey Worldwide Travel in Brisbane. He had some interesting stories and was very entertaining. Dick also passed on some handy travelling hints by booking your holidays online and exchanging your Australian money when you arrive in certain countries to save money. View stands for the Voice, Interests and Education of Women. It is one of Australia’s leading women’s volunteer organisations and supports the education of disadvantaged children through The Smith Family. View members come from all walks of life and meet regularly to provide our members with an outlet to help others, as well as to establish lasting friendships and contribute to the local community. This membership drive is really important to our View club so we can continue our volunteer work with The Smith Family and support local children and families. We are looking for women from all backgrounds and ages.

Asia’s Largest Airport Solar Power Plant Goes On-Stream Solar Frontier recently announced the completion of the Kansai International Airport Megasolar Power Plant; an 11.6 MW installation at Kansai International Airport in Osaka, Japan. The largest solar installation at an airport anywhere in Asia, the Kansai International Airport Megasolar power plant is now also one of the world’s biggest. “Bringing live an 11.6MW project in Japan in 7 months demonstrates Solar Frontier’s comprehensive and robust project capabilities,” said Hiroto Tamai, President and Representative Director of Solar Frontier. “We are proud to be part of the transition toward more environmentally-friendly airports.”

Australia’s first dual-axis solar array swings into position on Kangaroo Island South Australia A Solar developer has completed Australia’s first dual-axis tracker solar array, on South Australia’s Kangaroo Island. This is the first such development in Australia, with a four sun-tracker installation at Kangaroo Island’s airport being coupled with three Nissan Leafs and six electric charging stations around the island. The former Renewables SA initiated and funded the project, with dual-axis tracking technology chosen to be a highly visible demonstration of solar technology. The tracker technology itself will result in the solar arrays producing 30 to 40% more electricity than a stationary installation. The $500,000 project was funded by Renewables SA and involved a partnership between Regional Development Australia, Kangaroo Island Council, Ingenero and Nissan Fleet. (source: www.reneweconomy.com.au)

Six Queensland cities rank highest in Australia for investment return on solar panels

For many Queenslanders, the best investment opportunity they have may be the roof over their heads. Research by Energy Matters, a major solar installer, shows six of Queensland's cities rank the highest in Australia for their rate of investment return from typical PV solar. “The houses that have the best return have suitable roofs, not shaded by trees. North facing is best, but east and west can be fine too," said Nick Brass, Energy Matters co-founder. Quality solar systems typically last over 25 years, at a cost of $5,000 to $10,000 for 12 to 20-panel systems and inverters. About one in five Queensland homes have a PV solar system, although about half use some kind of solar power. But like any investment, solar panels come with risk. Consumers must seek out credible companies to deal with. Your local company based right here in Glasshouse gives you peace of mind.

Beware of the 41 cent feed-in tariff offer

There is a company door knocking in the local area offering a feed in tariff of about 41 cents. The company which makes the offer to purchase your excess energy is a retail energy provider NOT the salesman who is trying to get you to purchase his solar system. We enquired about this “wonderful offer” ourselves about 3 years ago. The plan is that we get our customers (you) to switch from your current power supplier (Origin & AGL etc) to the new power supplier who will purchase your surplus electricity for about 41 cents per kilowatt. But, we had to pay about $1400 to the new power company which they would use to subsidise YOUR electricity. They suggested we add $1400 onto the price of the solar system. In effect, if we did that, YOU the customer would be paying for your OWN 41 cents if you bought that system from us, or from anyone else offering this type of scheme. So if you are approached by an OUT OF TOWNER with such a system and scheme, please be very careful. Compare his price with ours to make sure you are NOT paying your own feed-in tariff in advance. BUT price does NOT necessarily equate to quality. Check the quality of any OUT OF TOWNER systems. 2kW $4087 … 3kW $4087 … 5kW $6110 All German solar, just a few hundred dollars more. Call in and talk to Ian or Ty before you commit yourself, or phone us on 5438 7200.

By Lea Parkes Glass House Mountains local Steve Graves and his mate Everard Schenk of Caloundra, who are participating in the 2014 Sh#tbox Rally, Cancer Council’s biggest private fundraiser, are hoping to get some support from our local community to help get their ‘sh#tbox’ to the starting line. The 4,000 km drive starts in Perth, stopping by Meekatharra, Marble Bar and Broome before heading into The Kimberleys, the Gibb River Road and the top end. It is going to cost the fellas just over $1,000.00 to transport the vehicle across the country so they are looking for some local businesses to buy a $100.00 sponsorship, in return their business logos will be featured in a sticker on the car. Glasshouse Country News has offered to be the first on board with sponsorship, and we’re looking forward to seeing our logo on the stylish Silver ‘93 Subaru L series wagon. I love what the guys are doing, and can’t see myself ever enduring this kind of trip – even in the name of raising funds for cancer, so we are happy to give them a hand! If you would like to join us as sponsors and get behind the guys please contact Steve Graves by phone 0407 110 760 or email gravesfam@bigpond.com

School News Hot breakfast and hot FM at GCCC

There was a lot of excitement at Glasshouse Country Christian College last Friday morning when Radio Station Hot 91.1FM was broadcasting their morning program from the school and had brought all sorts of goodies with them. Hot 91.1FM put on a sausage sizzle and gave away free lollies and stickers, but they also brought with them Maleny Dairies and the Fusion Bus. Maleny Dairies had free flavoured milk and the Fusion Bus was full of computer and board games for the students to play with. The reason for all the excitement was because of just one student - Jesse Woods in Year 9. Jesse had won the Schultz Toomey O’Brien Lawyers Young Achievers of the Year Award for February. In the past this award was restricted to

Representatives from Schultz Toomey O’Brien Lawyers presented a $1,000.00 cash prize to Jesse and another $1,000.00 to Glasshouse Country Christian College. Students lined up to receive autographs from breakfast show hosts Todd and Ash and grabbed whatever they could for the hosts to write on. Renea Stephens in Year 3 didn’t have a cast but she made use of her temporary bandage to get an autograph from Todd and Ash. Potential Leaders Day

Contributed by Daniel Brace The entire Year 9 Cohort took part in Beerwah State High School’s annual Year 9 Potential Leaders day last Wednesday. Well known leadership guru Bernie Kelly, the founder of Global Immersion, led the students through a variety of activities aimed to not only have students work together, but to step up and become leaders within their cohort and the wider school community. At the conclusion of the day, Bernie said he was very impressed with many of our Year 9 students. He said that he could definitely see a lot of students who would make fine Middle School leaders later in the year.

School News Kids get tough on trash for Clean Up Australia Day with Lea Parkes

Member for Fisher Mal Brough and Beerwah State School Prep students Maverick, Mia, Lilly, Josh, Hayden and Marley (pictured right) made the playground spotless as part of Clean Up Australia Day activities at the school last week. Across Australia on Sunday, similar emu parades helped clean up the nation. In 2013 an estimated 550,300 volunteers removed16,150 tonnes of rubbish at 7,341 sites right across the country. Organisers were hoping for even bigger numbers this year. “Clean up Australia Day is about inspiring our kids to care for and respect their environment,” said Mr Brough. “It’s great to see students, teachers and parents working together to keep the school looking even tidier than usual.”

Mooloolah is a swimming champion school On Friday, February 21, 11 students represented Mooloolah State School at the Glasshouse District School Swimming Championships at the Beerwah Aquatic Centre. Competing schools included Maleny, Peachester, St Michaels of Caboolture,

Beerwah, GHCC, Elimbah, Landsborough, Beerburrum and Mooloolah. It was a ‘stinking hot day’, but spirits were high! Mooloolah swimmers really gave it their best, with lots of places and personal bests. Tamsyn Douglass won the nine year old girls Age Champion trophy and Tate Hume was runner up in the nine years boys Age Championship. Mooloolah State School brought home the trophy for Champion of the Small Schools! This is a huge accomplishment. It’s been many years since Mooloolah has had so many swimmers qualify to participate in the district swimming carnival. “This fantastic outcome may well have resulted from the wonderful partnership that the school has with Cowan Taylor Aquatics,” said Mooloolah Principal Michele Brown. “Since taking over the management of the Mooloolah School pool in October last year, Andrew and Georgina have done a superb job rallying the families in the community and encouraging the children to attend swimming lessons or squad training after school each day.” Congratulations Mooloolah Swimmers!

The year of mathematics

Landsborough State School is fortunate to be a part of a regional Success Team Project where they have gained a numeracy coach for three days a week and school support for the remaining of the year as well as support from a regional maths expert, Rob Proffitt-White. Head of curriculum, Kristy Blaikie, said one of the main focuses on the improvement agenda for this year is mathematics, in particular the number strand. “Landsborough State School aims to build capacity in its teachers and build strength in all year levels in regards to numbers. “All of our staff have spent hours in professional development meetings prior to the students starting school and we look forward to much more success in this area,” she said. Many initiatives have been introduced with an emphasis on mathematics. Some of these include maths homework cases filled with games and activities, parent workshops to educate parents on the maths strategies, lunchtime maths clubs, number warm ups and mathematicians of the day. Through the knowledge staff and families will gain, all students are set to benefit from this exciting program. The aim is for all students to be empowered with a positive attitude towards maths challenges and to build self-confidence in 16 |

RE: Ewen Maddock Dam – facts or fiction?

We’ve read letters of late relating to Ewen Maddock Dam. Over a year ago, Landsborough Area Community Association Inc. had a meeting with Unity Water. At this meeting we were told that the water in the dam was being used to supply Caloundra and that access to the wall area of the dam would be renewed when work on the wall was finished. We were also told an inspection tour of the plant for LACA Inc. members would be arranged. Since that time we have been unable to obtain any communication with Unity Water re this. E-mails and letters go unanswered. The person who was to arrange the tour for us is no longer with Unity Water. Last year we were surprised to see an article in GCNews stating that the dam water was supplying the Caloundra area as the dam water level was not decreasing (except when work was done on the dam wall). The source given in this article was the water supply authority. We questioned that article due to the fact that the level was not decreasing but received no response. As far as walking tracks are concerned – we believe that there should be some separation from mountain bikes (there is an Australian standard for mixed use of pathways- a lot of these tracks would not comply). RE: ‘Concerned Resident’ GCNews, in December – we believe that the installation of the high security gates and fences on the road and the wall of the dam make an ‘untruth’ of SEQ waters’ statement that this area would be closed only for a maintenance period. When SEQ Water announced the closure due to maintenance they did not tell us that access to the picnic area and the boat launching area would be lost permanently. The SEQ Water web site states that there will be no access to that end of the dam and that improved access for boats at the swimming area should make us all happy. In fact, the boat access is still inadequate. While on the subject of inadequacy, how about a spring-loaded or timed tap for washing sand off feet etc? This would prevent people putting their feet in the wash basin, which happens frequently. As SEQ Water figures show – between December 19 last year and February 22 this year the dam level dropped 3.4%. How much chemical truck traffic did this generate? Re: K. Johnson, GCNews February 19 - LACA Inc. disagrees that this dam is private property. No government or government utility owns private property. They remain the property of the people. This dam is a good example. Most of the catchment area for the dam was purchased over time by Caloundra City Council (and your environmental levy) LACA Inc. does not see it as a privilege to use what we already own. Governments and councils are the custodians of the people’s assets. A. Husband Secretary, LACA Inc.

Simpson Street

I would like to know what people think about our new look Simpson Street? I think heading north up Simpson street is downright dangerous; there is not enough room between the centre line and car doors when they are open. If somebody opens a car door at the wrong time there will be an accident. It was better the way it was. Les Hatchman Beerwah

Get a grip

Two weeks ago I witnessed some of the most disgraceful conduct that I’ve seen in a long time. An older ‘gentleman’ was taking a large load of green waste to the Beerwah refuse centre and was belligerently and aggressively abusing the staff who work at the boom gate. Their crime? They had the audacity of charging him the standard fees that the Sunshine Coast Council has set as the green waste charges. From his language (which was particularly colourful), tone and demeanour, I can only assume that he is someone of great social standing in the community, for he seemed to be telling all and sundry that he knows things and important people – as if it was some sort of threat. If this so-called gentleman was as clever as he seems to consider himself to be, he would know that the staff who work there are part of the wonderful not-for-profit organisation called Beerwah Community Recycling Inc, who have the contract to run the facility on behalf of council. They have to charge what the council tell them to charge. Abusing the staff is such a cowardly thing to do – they are only doing the job they are contracted to do. From my experience, the staff are a great bunch of people, who are so helpful and courteous that people like our esteemed older ‘gentleman’ abuser, should take lessons from them about how to be a first-rate citizen, rather than a low-class bully. If he – or any anyone else of the same ilk – has issues with the amount he expects to pay, then they should be taking it up with Sunshine Coast Council and not pathetically mouthing off to the blameless staff at the facility. So, I would like to thank Trish and the team at the Beerwah tip for their diligence and their professionalism, and to assure them that the moronic are amongst the minority in our community. B Green, Glenview

Support for club

On a recent Sunday my friends and I decided to try out the Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club tapas lunch which was advertised in the GCNews that week. Having never tried tapas before, I would like to say that it was a delicious and beautifully presented plate of food. The background music was a pleasure to listen to and I thoroughly recommend all locals and friends to go along and experience the pleasant atmosphere. We will definitely be looking forward to the next one. My grandsons play soccer at this club and know of many others that use the facilities - I hope that the local community will get in and support the club as much as possible. Marie Butts Beerwah

Health Check Heel pain

Are your heels causing you discomfort when you first get up in the morning? What about after you have been standing or walking for a while? Many people suffer with heel pain and the sooner you start treating it, the sooner you can start walking again! The Podiatrists at Stepping Out Podiatry commonly see this condition all year round, however over the summer months when sandals and thongs are being worn all day, injury of the foot muscles can occur. Flattening of the arches, daily activities where you are standing on your feet for too long, poor foot alignment, recent injuries or a sudden increase in exercise can also develop this condition. A simple change in footwear may solve some inflammatory problems, along with stretching out the foot muscles and strengthening the weak surrounding muscles. On assessment of your foot posture and the alignment of your knee and pelvis, arch supports (orthotics) may also be needed to get you back walking again and prevent any further damage. So, don’t delay, call today and ‘keep your feet moving’. The friendly team at Stepping Out Podiatry can be contacted by phoning 1300 881 082 for appointments at Landsborough, Beerwah and Maleny.

After 15 years in the Defence Force, Elena’s interest initially grew from owning her own investment property in the mid 1990’s. She then moved into retail sales and then five years working for a major telecommunications operator. An opportunity came up to follow her true interest in finance and learn from a broker in Hervey Bay. Three years ago, Elena moved to the Sunshine Coast to join Aussie. As a mobile mortgage broker, Elena offers a service that comes to people’s homes and operates outside standard business hours. This offers a more personalised service and through her own experiences, Elena believes she can bring a local level of understanding to her clients situations and work with them to ensure they find a home loan suited to their individual needs. Elena is about to launch a local competition to run over the next two months starting mid March. New clients who book an appointment directly with Elena go into the draw to win a $400.00 voucher at Spicers Tamarind in Maleny.

Katie Jenner

When asked about how she came to be running her current business, Katie replied that she “married a mechanic!” Owning a business has always been a long term goal and so when the opportunity to get fully involved in husband Michael’s trade came up; they jumped at the chance and in July 2013 took over ownership of the shop. Previously Katie was an account manager, and also a chef, so she brings people skills, account and administration experience, while husband Michael brings 10 years of mechanical expertise. The business is female friendly – they can translate mechanic talk into plain English! Providing a truly local one stop shop for parts, they can take care of anything mechanically. Spare parts for cars and agricultural equipment can also be sourced. Katie looks forward to being able to live on acreage in Glass House Mountains, and to become more part of the local community. Katie feels that this area provides the perfect balance between country, beach and city living. She encourages all readers to call in or phone with any queries. Happy to offer a pick-up and drop-off service, they will always try to be flexible and go that extra mile for their customers.

Local Music Scene Music Today

with Dr Micheal Whiticker

Micheal lives at Glass House Mountains and is a professional musician, composer and recording studio owner

A career musician, today

People sometimes ask me how much things have changed for musicians over the last 30 or 40 years, and the inquiry is often directed at career aspirations. Is music a realistic career today? Certainly in the 1970s every musician worked regularly and was paid well for it. It led to a lot of people following a career in music and suffering the consequences with less and less work and poor pay as time has gone on. In the popular and country music business it is often about luck, looks and good contacts - two people with the same amount of talent and personal skills can have two totally different careers. In the jazz field the best players are in demand and find work, but there are a lot of outstanding jazz players out there! The career path of a classical musician can lead to reasonably well paid position in an orchestra, but only for the best players. Teaching is a further option for well trained musicians and many wisely follow that more secure path. My advice to someone aspiring to a career in music is to be prepared for a tough road - one full of extraordinary highs, as making good music is one of the most incredible experiences known, but it is one that can also be full of disappointments. If someone is not sure then I always say, do something more reliable for a career, and play music nights and weekends. Let me take as an example of what it probably takes for a career in music today, an outstanding young musician who has been performing on the Coast recently – George Jackson. George started very young as a brass instrument, guitar and bass player but soon discovered the violin and dedicated himself to it. He began with a good teacher and studied classical music and went through ‘all’ his grades. As a teenager he came across Irish fiddle music and it knocked him off his feet. He attended lots of music camps and workshops and came across bluegrass and ‘old time’ music and began to take an interest in it. By the time he left school he was an award winning violin and banjo player and decided to study jazz at the degree level, both because he enjoyed it but also because it would give him good training as an improvising musician. Now at the age of 24 he is in demand as a musician, playing with the best players on the scene, and travelling internationally with his music. It is certainly looking like he made a wise series of choices, and is having a great career! May your month also lead to good choices and great music. Micheal

Glasshouse Country – nirvana for runners

Run Queensland, a local sporting event organising company, have been going from strength to strength since commencing their venture last year, and two Sundays ago they had one of their most successful events yet. In the wee small hours of the morning on Sunday, February 22, over 200 runners participated in the ‘Mt Beerwah Daybreak Run’ along the tracks and trails surrounding Mt Beerwah, running in either the 10km, 20km, 30km or – for the die-hards – the 50km event. Run Queensland’s Brett Standring said that amongst the runners were some national and internationally recognised athletes. “This event is one which is now highly regarded amongst the running community. Some are saying that the 10km circuit is the hardest of its type in Australia,” said Brett. “One particularly challenging section is called The Dungeon, which is a section of the course that takes in a close up view of the north side of Mt Beerwah. “The most arduous part of the course, it’s a test for all participants. It’s become a signature of both the Daybreak Run and Beerwah at Night run – some take it head on, some are more cautious, some fair well and some suffer, but everyone remembers it – and those lucky dogs in the 50km get to go through twice,” laughed Brett. Their next organised run is the Wild Horse Criterium around Wild Horse Mountain. There will be 11km, 22km, 33km, 55km and 50 mile runs. This year along with individual entries, there will be team, group and family entries as well. $2,750 for Mooloolah River Waterwatch & Landcare

Safety boost for Steve Irwin Way and Bruce Highway intersection

Mooloolah River Waterwatch & Landcare will receive $2,750 to keep the Mooloolah Catchment clean and healthy. The funding will be provided under the Government’s Grants to Voluntary Environment, Sustainability and Heritage Organisations. Jan Kesby and her group do invaluable work to protect our waterways, for future generations to enjoy. We all benefit from the hard work and dedication of Jan and her volunteers and the Government is committed to supporting their work through the GVESHO program. This grant will enable staff and volunteers to focus on their invaluable onground works. To join phone Jan on 0407 641 327 or email janmrw@caloundra.net.

It is great to see that Sunshine Coast residents will benefit from safety improvements on the intersection of Steve Irwin Way and the Bruce Highway northbound exit lane at Beerburrum. This $3 million project is set to commence in the coming weeks and will see an improvement of safety for motorists exiting the Bruce Highway northbound onto the Steve Irwin Way. I know that many Glass House residents use this route every day so it will be a real benefit to invest in these important safety works. The works will realign the current Y-shaped intersection, create a merge lane and enhance sight distance for merging vehicles. The project is due to be completed by mid-year with works to be carried out during the day between 6.00am and 6.00pm, Monday to Friday. For up-to-date information on traffic disruptions, please visit www.131940.qld.gov.au or call 13 19 40.

Full Bench vindication When I ran for Fisher one of my aims was to restore the electorate’s faith in their Federal member. With that in mind I was relieved that the Full Bench of the Federal Court, in upholding James Ashby’s appeal, last week vindicated my involvement in the matter, which has been the subject of some controversy. In its decision the full bench found the following … ‘We are also of the opinion that there was no basis for the primary judge to conclude that Brough was part of any combination with anyone in respect to the commencement of these proceedings with the predominant purpose of damaging Slipper in the way alleged or at all. Ashby was persuaded to contact Brough by Bradford. Despite Brough’s hesitation at seeing Ashby he did so and referred him to Russell QC. There is absolutely nothing untoward about those matters.’

In Parliament This week in parliament I made speeches about education funding and youth unemployment on the Sunshine Coast. I also drew attention to the aims of Nathan Tessman, a young man with Axonal Neuropathy and posed a Question to Environment Minister Greg Hunt about the damaging Carbon Tax.

Hinterland Bus figures not encouraging I want to again remind the community to use the Hinterland Connect Bus service as the recently released figures are again showing a downward trend in use. Unfortunately these figures are not encouraging and as the community evaluation period ends on April 30, I would encourage the community to start considering alternatives to this service such as a community bus. There is however still a number of months before the end of the evaluation period and the community have the chance to turn these figures around. Remember, it’s use it or lose it!

Apply now for Seniors Week grants Glass House community groups have until Friday, March 28 to apply for a share in $100,000 to host Senior Week activities to celebrate Queensland’s older people. This is a great opportunity for groups to celebrate the valuable contributions older people make to our Glass House community and I encourage local groups to consider applying for their own event. The Seniors Week event grants are administered by the Council on the Ageing (COTA) Queensland, which receives Newman Government funding to plan and run Seniors Week activities. To apply for a Seniors Week subsidy visit www.cotaqld.org. au or contact my office for further information. Applications close on Friday, March 28.

Kilcoy-Beerwah Road footpath Update I’m pleased to let you know that the missing footpath located along Kilcoy-Beerwah Road, between Nichols Ave and Blackbutt Street, Beerwah will be constructed. A few months ago I was contacted by constituents, particularly mothers with prams and older people, concerned about the safety of trying to cross this busy intersection. It was also a bit confusing as a great footpath ran all the way along Nichols Avenue, but stopped once it reached Kilcoy-Beerwah Road. As the construction of footpaths falls under Sunshine Coast Council I contacted them to see if they could investigate the issue. This month council informed me that: ‘Council is proposing to undertake extensive works to upgrade the pathways network in the vicinity of schools under its 2014/15 Capital Roadworks Program. This section of pathway will be constructed as part of these works.’ This is great news for the Beerwah community and I would like to thank council for their co-operation and efforts. I look forward to seeing the pathway constructed in the future.

Landsborough Museum Have you ever thought about discovering the history of our beautiful historic towns? How about volunteering your time to help a good cause? Last week I had the pleasure of visiting the Landsborough Museum as they hosted a morning tea to thank past and present volunteers and members for their support and officially launch their latest exhibition ‘Thanks for the Memories’. What a fantastic job they have all done over the years in collecting historic records, documents, stories, artefacts and photographs of the area. Tours to Parliament House Did you know it took 25 years to build Parliament House in Brisbane in the 1800s? If you’re a keen history buff and would like to find out more about this historic institution why not arrange a trip down there one day? I have been contacted by some local community groups keen to find out information about group tours and high teas. Public tours are conducted Monday-Friday except public holidays. Self sufficiency a step closer! We have taken another exciting step towards our self-sufficiency dream this last month, with the arrival of our precious Wessex Saddleback pigs! It has been a dream to have free range Wessex Saddlebacks since we first settled on our property and we are just bursting with excitement and anticipation of the year ahead. The preparation and setup for our free range Wessex Saddlebacks involved a lot of research, planning and labour, however judging by the pigs’ obvious enjoyment, it has all paid off. Our paddock consists of a very secure hinge-joint and electric fence, sown forage crop, portable shelter and ample water for both wallows and drinking. Apart from planning to breed the pigs to have a regular supply of the tastiest pork for the freezer, we anticipate using them as part of our paddock rotations to help clean up after harvesting our crops. It will make for some very interesting pork flavours, and I’m most keen to see how they go after our ginger is harvested…mmmm, ginger pork! We were lucky enough to get some very well handled, kid friendly sows and a boar, and they are almost equivalent to pets already! It is anticipated that they will easily be moved to areas requiring clean up using just electric fencing perimeters. Judging by their eagerness to trot straight to us on call, it should be a simple matter to rotate them about to the various areas requiring their cultivating services! So it is all coming together on the farm with veggies, fruit, chooks, cattle and pigs! What will be next is always the question? Looking forward to getting stuck into planting out the winter veggies now and I’ll be sure to be back onto garden talk next month! Until next time, Get Up and Grow!

The magic of plants

Sometimes plants can seem like they are magical and do things that make you go ‘wow’. Tige Eddie from Peachester had such an experience recently, when he dug out a large Agave. These can be a challenge to deal with, due to their sharp spikes at the end of the leaves, as they have a waxy layer covering them containing a chemical which causes painful inflammation, and can affect nearby joints. The plant Tige attacked had a small flower spike just starting to grow from the centre. These types of plants only flower once, and then they die. After a week, Tige noticed that the flower stem had grown about another metre in length – and made a perfect 90 degree turn from the horizontal to the vertical. The flower stalk was now growing directly upwards. And not with a gently curving bend – it was sharp angled turn, which gave Tige a real surprise. He turned the plant over and – hey presto – another 90 degree bend soon developed as the flower stalk kept growing. Tige’s example shows us a magical property of plants. Plants can ‘move’ and change the direction of their growth. We all know that stems grow up and roots grow down – but why is this? The first root after a seed germinates grows directly down in response to gravity. Yes – they can ‘sense’ gravity. Gravity pulls starches downwards in their root cells, making them release hormone chemicals which result in the new root growing directly down – rather than sideways. As the roots develop, they then respond to water as well as gravity. Seed shoots are similar – but they grow away from gravity and so shoot upwards through the soil, rather than downwards. Once they are growing out of the soil, they respond to both light and gravity to make sure they are always growing upwards towards the best source of sunlight. Sunlight falling on a plant triggers the production of a growth hormone (called auxin). These hormones control cell growth. In this case, as more sunlight is falling on one side of the stem, more of the growth hormone is produced on the opposite side of the stem, which makes those cells grow longer. This has the effect of bending the stem towards the light source. Auxin is a very powerful natural plant hormone and is responsible for many of the growth aspects of plants. Interestingly, its discovery formed the basis for the development of synthetic plant hormones herbicides. So in one form they work to make the plant grow; and in another they work to control weeds. As the plant grows, the cells become stiffer and less ‘bendy’ and more woody. This explains why Tige’s flower stalk now has a permanent ‘Z’ bend in it. Tige and his ‘magical’ Agave

Barbed Wire Grass

cymbopogon refractus

Barbed Wire grass is a common grass of the Sunshine Coast area and is so called because of the attractive seed heads which resemble barb wire. While similar to Kangaroo Grass (Themeda triandra) barbed wire grass is blue / green in colour as opposed to the brighter green of the latter. Both are attractive clumping perennial grasses which are becoming popular as garden plants, as well as for revegetation purposes. Barbed wire grass usually reaches a height of 60cms, but in flower can be as tall as one and half metres. It is said to have a slightly lemon scent but the most attractive feature is the alternating pink-burgundy / green colour found on the flower stems. This grass is an important food source for parrots, especially the Pale Headed Rosella, and should have a place in every home garden.

Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship

GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY ANGLICAN CHURCH

Chris Johnson Glasshouse Country Baptist Church I wasn’t a minister for very long before I realised that everybody hurts. For many people that pain is deep and well hidden. For others it's out in the open, but everybody hurts. Life is cruelly unfair to many people; the good die young, evil people seem to prosper. And innocent people suffer needlessly. And frankly we want to know, rightly, where is God in all of this? One of the psalms, Psalm 73 is a record of one man’s struggle with this very conflicting idea. He starts off with the idea ‘Surely God is good to his people, to those who are the pure in heart.’ The songwriter believed this deeply - he taught it and sung about it - but as he looked around what he saw did not match his beliefs as he saw evil people doing bad things to good people, and good people having tough times. It didn’t sit well with him, and it he had gotten to the point where he was about to throw his faith in. He says that as he thought about these bad and evil people, he was becoming bitter, twisted, and angry at God.

WEDNESDAYS *Mooloolah (Paget Road) 9.00am

Until he looked at God and then he realised that pain and suffering and problems are just for a short while. One day God is going to right wrongs and restore things to the way they should be. It hasn’t happened yet, but he knows that it will happen one day and in God’s good time. The New Testament reminds us that one day God will recreate a world where there is no more pain and suffering. But it’s not yet - our response is to trust God and be patient. Some people say that since there is pain in this world there can be no God - the trouble is if you remove God all you are left with is pain and no hope. With God, you can say God will deal with it. Jesus also suffered. He also put his trust in God, and God ultimately honoured Him, so that one day there will be no more pain in a place where Jesus reigns. God will honour your trust as well.

Blood, Sweat & Cheers Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country

AFL Come & Try

Sunshine Coast AFL is currently running a five week ‘Come & Try AFL’ Program at the Glasshouse Hinterland Lions Football ground in Landsborough. The program is open to all school children in the region and is run on Wednesday afternoons from 4.00pm at the Tunnel Ridge Road facility. This is a great way for kids to come and experience AFL with other children new to the sport. Free buses are running from the local schools to ferry the kids to and from the after school program.

If you would like further information please contact Chris Hunt from the AFL on phone 0414 468 820.

Landsborough Tennis Club Contributed by Kerry Roach The club will be holding their AGM on March 18, from 7.00pm at our house, in Maleny Road Landsborough. We welcome all members and non-members within the community to attend. All committee positions will become available, so if you would like to join in and support the local tennis club, please come along to our meeting. This year the club is also seeking the assistance of a communication / promotion officer and a maintenance coordinator. These positions are voluntary and will provide the club and the local community with a valuable service. If you would

like any further information please call Kerry Roach 0422 026 612 or Dawn Wendt 5494 1085 or email landsboroughtennis@hotmail.com Unfortunately the Friday Junior Tennis competition kicked off the season with some wet weather. All matches scheduled last Friday, February 28 were cancelled. We look forward to some good weather next week and with so many young and keen players, some great tennis to be played. Registration fees can be paid at the clubhouse, cash or cheque only. Divisional players $50.00, PeeWee players $40.00 and all continuous players $30.00.

Beerwah Ladies Golf

Contributed by Jenny Kelly The greens are coming back beautifully after recently being cored and the fairways are still running well. Sixty two ladies came out to enjoy our course on Thursday. They played a Single Stroke event for trophies generously donated by Leith Barnes and Sue Wood. We played in two divisions and the winner of Division 1 was Pauline Masen on 72 Nett. Pauline won on a count back from Sue Greentree, who also scored 72 Nett. Just to show that age is no barrier to playing great golf, Gloria White took out Division 2 with a very handy score of 70 Nett. Gloria celebrated her 80th a couple of years ago and is enjoying her golf more than ever. Runner up to Gloria was Marie Norton with a score of 74 Nett. Well done to all the winners. Hope Hannah definitely had her radar tuned in, winning three of the five Nearest to the Pins on offer. Hope took out the 2nd, 5th and Division 1 on the 18th. Josie Thistlethwaite won the 16th and Carol Fraser won Division 2 on 18. The random birdie hole on 3 was safe for another week, and the Ball rundown went to 77 Nett. Let’s hope this great weather keeps up so everyone came come out to enjoy this great course of ours. See you on the fairways.

Mooloolah Valley Bowls Club Contributed by Judy Walker Tuesday winners were Eileen Pierce and Ian Henderson and Lloyd Walker and Gay Ricketts. Friday winners were Peter Setch and Tony

Pignata (comeback kids) 2nd, Eric Wood and James Sammon and 3rd, Nev Shaw and Keiko. Well done Keiko! Both raffles won by James Sammon. No Saturdays for a few weeks.

Beerwah Contract Bridge Club Contributed by Kerry Gillam Our weekly sessions, held at the Beerwah Golf Club on Fridays commencing at 12.30pm have produced the following results. At a national conference of the Australian Hotels Association, the general managers of Cascade Brewery (Tasmania), Tooheys (New South Wales), XXXX (Queensland), CUB (Victoria) and Coopers (South Australia) found themselves sitting at the same table for lunch. When the waitress asked what they wanted to drink, the GM of Tooheys said without hesitation, "I'll have a Tooheys New." The head of Carlton and United smiled and said, “make mine a VB." To which

PISCES February 20 – March 20 There are three Moon cycles and three planets going retrograde or direct. All this means there will be a lot of attention on your future. Put out your wish list of what you would like to experience for the rest of the year. Believe that the universe will fulfill your dreams! Create a wish board to paste words for manifesting. ARIES March 21 – April 20 The New Moon at the beginning of this week arrived into your inner-wellness zone. Hopefully you will seek escape from heavy work and duties as your energy dips down. So the first week of the month is no doubt lethargic. A financial request may be refused. Intimate relations still look chilly up until July 2014. TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This week the focus will be on your friends and social life. Perhaps there is an involvement in a group focused on group healing or self-improvement of the body. Saturn now enters a retrograde station putting you on the pathway to getting relationships, both personal and business, on more solid ground at this time. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 With the energy of Saturn seemingly turning backwards, in its retrograde movement, it will impact your work affairs. There are conditions that need reform regarding your early childhood, such as your standing with your mother and father. This week brings a jolt into your psyche about your earliest memories.

Week beginning 05/03/14

CANCER June 22 – July 22 The New Moon kicked off this month in the sign of Pieces, which is another water sign supporting yours and works in your favour. You are being provided with insight into some future trend. So this marks a time to advance your education, legal, travel and selfpromotional goals. People bring input into your life. LEO July 23 – August 22 This month is a big celestial head turner for you with three lunations. Planetary energies hover over intimate relations and joint funds, such as tax, wills, or outstanding credit matters. Mercury and Venus, both being in Aquarius, stimulates your partnership zone with exciting conversations. A quirky, lucky time. VIRGO August 23 – September 22 March has three stations of planets that reverse their energies, which may reap havoc for order and routine! Some banking papers are troublesome under a Saturn retrograde and a revaluation of your estate or tax paper work gets bogged down. All will be cleared away in the following week with internet skills. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 Mars, being in your sign, reverses at the beginning of this month, so a stop sign has arrived in your life until mid-May. Generally speaking you should feel energy and enthusiasm drop downwards. The backward moving task master, Saturn, retrograding in Scorpio, may bite into your fiscal affairs. Get lots of rest.

SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 The blessing of the New Moon in Pisces at the beginning of the month brings healing and renewal to your emotional life. Be attentive to any entertainment functions that stimulate your creativity in art, music, and dance. All these are refreshing. Solutions to problems come under inspired Neptune`s blessing in Pisces. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 This New Moon stimulates and puts emphasis in your fourth sector of property, farming, mining, or just plain ordinary gardening. Under a Saturn movement, there may be a strong review of your life as to how to deal with your elders, a parent or a close friend. There are sweet stirrings with inner dreams about family life. CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 This is the month under two New Moons and one Full Moon, when your sense of discipline or ambition may get thrown off by three planets changing direction. With Mars in its reverse cycle, be aware that you might be thrown off your assertive equilibrium on the career front. Working alliances become tougher now. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 With the Pisces New Moon at the beginning of this month your emotional psyche has its feelers out for changing some financial matters. Let your imagination brew into new opportunities and follow through with faith. Saturn may see a career slow down, or review, that lasts until July. Make some improvements.

the boss of Coopers rejoined, "I'll have a Coopers, the King of Beers." And the bloke from Cascade asked for "a Cascade, the cleanest draught on the planet." The General Manager of XXXX paused a moment and then placed his order, "I'll have a diet coke." The others looked at him as if he had sprouted a new head.
