Hi Everyone

ell some weeks pass and it is hard to pinpoint anything memorable that happened – definitely not how you would describe last week. I have lost count of how many different conversations I have had with people about how they coped with or were affected by last week’s ex cyclone Oswald. And I have to say thank goodness it wasn’t an actual cyclone – because imagine the type of destruction that could have caused. After two days and a night at home with no power, no running water and such high humidity during the days and

the night – I was definitely starting to lose a bit of my bright, bubbly, sunny disposition. I asked myself how people actually survived before all this modern technology made us so soft – then I started taking notice of how much better than me Brownie was coping. So apparently I have married Glasshouse Country’s version of Bear Grills from Man Vs Wild. Sadly for Brown Grills the power came on that night and we have just gone back to living our pampered life!

Australia Day saw Glasshouse Country locals recognised for the contributions they have made to our local community.
12/60 Simpson Street, BEERWAH
Bernard Verwayen of Mooloolah is a dedicated member of the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub-branch’s welfare team and his efforts were acknowledged with an Order of Australia Medal for his service to veterans and their families. Next week GCNews will have a story on Bernard and why he was honoured with an OAM. On Australia Day eve Sunshine Coast Council held their Australia Day awards ceremony and while there weren’t any winners from our area, we did have a number of locals nominated. Congratulations to these local heroes that included John Rouhan, Noel Cox, Max Chapman and Jaylene Musgrave. Divisional Councillor Rick Baberowski said all communities are built on helping each other and he was incredibly proud of all those inspiring individuals and organisations who make a difference to our community through their outstanding contributions. To be recognised is important and being nominated for these prestigious awards is a huge honour in itself. John Rouhan of Beerwah was nominated by the Beerwah-Peachester RSL Sub-branch in the community category for the extensive work he has undertaken for the RSL and for his on-going work with the Sub-branch. Noel Cox also of Beerwah, was nominated in both the Senior and the Sports and Recreation categories for the work he has done over many years for the Caloundra Cricket Club. Max Chapman from Glass House Mountains was nominated for the work he has undertaken personally in rescuing horses, which he looks after and shares with many locals. Jaylene Musgrave is the founder of and tireless worker for Vegan Warriors – Jaylene is passionate about her commitment standing up for the rights of animals; she lives in Glass House Mountains and was nominated in the Citizen of the Year category. While they did not win their categories – their commitment to and work undertaken for their individual groups and causes has meant that others have appreciated their efforts and taken the time and effort to nominate and acknowledge the work they undertake to improve their communities.

Towns come to a standstill The Australian spirit was strong at Landsborough over the recent long weekend and following few days, with Cheryl Rutland and the team at the BP service station keeping thousands of people supplied with petrol, ice and other basics. When all around were without electricity, phones, internet and running low on essentials, Cheryl saw it as her responsibility to make sure that people were looked after. Cheryl said most of the other local service stations and shops couldn’t operate due to power and phone or internet problems. “We had power to the pumps and for lighting, so we became a central place where locals and travellers could buy petrol and other things they needed,” Cheryl said. “But because the EFTPOS lines were down, we couldn’t take credit or debit cards. It was either manually imprinting a BP Card or using cash. “And as lots of people ran out of cash due to the ATM’s not working, we helped out by giving people some petrol so they could get to where they needed on the promise that they’ll pay us back later. Over three days last week, they served thousands of people. With over 3,000 BP Card imprints to process, plus countless numbers of people given goods on ‘credit’ they were run off their feet.
“No one went away without fuel - even if they had no cash on them,” Cheryl said. “Most people only needed $10.00 or $20.00, but we gave one person $100.00 of fuel so they could get to Toowoomba. “Another lady had to get to Woodford so she could set up the school classroom for her students on their first day back. “Almost everyone who we gave credit to has already paid us back – they were just so grateful that we could help. “We supplied the local SES and other services, and also the Maleny Hospital, who had to come down here for fuel for their generators, as there was nowhere on the range that could pump fuel. “I felt it was only right that we help people out as much as we could – it would be unAustralian to do anything else. “But customers also helped us as well. They drove to the coast and ordered fuel and ice for us, as we couldn’t get orders to them as we had no phones. Without that community spirit, we wouldn’t have been able to keep going. “I’d just like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding last week, as well as thanking my great staff for their dedication and commitment to helping others. “But I hope we don’t have to go through it again for a long time,” Cheryl said.

Glass House MP hears and sees community concerns Whilst spared the flooding and devastation impacting on large parts of the state, the Sunshine Coast was hit hard by the recent weather event caused by ex-cyclone Oswald, and the Glass House electorate sustained some of the worst damage. Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell MP, toured the windswept electorate twice in the last week and has been stunned by the impact and the damage caused. “This storm created havoc for residents and businesses throughout Glass House, many of whom only regained power late on Thursday night or Friday morning. “Let’s face it, this weather event was unprecedented for the Coast and as the local MP, I was so proud of how resilient and courageous our community folk were in this time of crisis. “All of the locals I spoke to acknowledged the extreme efforts that Energex crews were going to in order to restore power and were relieved and incredibly thankful when they could finally shower with hot water,” Mr Powell commented.
On his tour, Mr Powell met with many local business owners including Allan at the Glasshouse Newsagent, Kylie at the Glasshouse Post Office and Bill from the highly regarded accommodation house, ‘Glass on Glasshouse’. He also paid a visit to the Peachester State School and the Peachester Farm and Produce store. Finishing off the tour in Maleny, Mr Powell spoke with Kay from Maleny Dairies about their milking challenges as well as business owners in Maple Street including Mark from Maple 3, The team at Maleny Butchers and Rob Outridge from Maleny IGA. “Business owners and residents throughout Glass House have been through a lot in the last week yet all of the people I met and chatted with still managed to put on a smile on their face. “This tour also allowed me to provide residents with information on accessing the Department of Communities ‘Personal Hardship Scheme’ funding. Anyone who suffered the loss of fridge and freezer contents may wish to check your eligibility for this funding.
“I received valuable feedback from the community on my tour and I will be using this information to compile a summary report which will be handed to the various Government Departments concerned in the coming weeks,” Mr Powell concluded. The Department of Communities can be contacted on – 1800 173 349.

Last week after it looked like the weather was clearing, Glass House Mountains local David Mackison thought he would take a look around his property and survey the damage. Fortunately for him that out of the corner of his eye he could see this massive tree coming down and he had to make a split second decision which way to go. And although the tree missed him – he slid on the grass and in the process winded himself, so when David’s lovely wife heard the massive crack and started calling out to make sure he wasn’t underneath it – poor David was too winded to answer her. I can only imagine her panic until she heard him respond (once he got his breath back).

Back to the Bowlsie Club Glass House or the Bowlsie as it used to be known, have decided that it is time for a reunion – and have set the date to get new and old club members together for a party on February 23. The club opened in 1958 and was a vital part of the community since then. During the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s it was the hub of life in Glass House Mountains and the surrounding townships from Elimbah and Beerburrum through to Beerwah. Born and bred local and Club Glasshouse local Sharon Bochow said there were plenty of people that grew up in the area who spent many enjoyable hours drinking with their mates, having their 21sts and wedding receptions as well as honing their skills at the pool table at the club. “So we have been spreading the word, making sure that former locals know about the reunion,” she said. “We’ve heard that there are people from as far away as Maryborough and Yepoon who are planning to come along, as well as some who have only moved as far as Caboolture and Kawana who don’t want to miss it.” Sharon has also been trying to track down some of the photos taken at the Bowlsie over the years – to put them together for the night. If you have photos that could be scanned she would love to hear from you. “We have even organised a local band to play made up of husband and wife duo Michael and Sheree Bochow and Paul McKenna, all from
Local band, Classic Pub Rock will perform on the night Glass House Mountains to rock the night with some classic pub rock with plenty of music from the 70s,” said Sharon. “It will also be nice to acknowledge the families that worked tirelessly to establish the club and keep it running totally on volunteers right through until 2001. “Many of the families of the Club’s founding members still live in the local area including the Fullertons, Dunnings, Smeardons, Youngs and the Gowers; we would love to see them on the day,” Sharon said. So if you have shared some fun times at the Bowlsie or have been part of the club’s history you won’t want to miss this night, and if you want to keep up-to-date with what is happening at the club – make sure you like them on Facebook – Club Glass House.
What a difference a week makes As the rain has fallen and Ewen Maddock Dam is full again, the fish are going to be on the bite. Good timing too, with the Ewen Maddock Fish Stockers Challenge fishing competition being held on February 23. There are great prizes in a range of categories, and with numbers limited to 50 anglers, everyone’s in with a chance.
All funds raised go directly back into restocking programs for Ewen Maddock and Baroon Pocket Dams, which means that they can keep functioning as productive recreational fisheries into the future. To find out how to enter, look up the Ewen Maddock Fish Management Inc group’s website www.ewenmaddock.com.au

Tragically, that situation played out last Tuesday with an accident at the intersection resulting in the death of a 28-year-old woman from Buderim, with a male passenger also in a critical condition. The car was turning right from the Beerwah overpass road into Steve Irwin Way when it was hit by a car travelling north on Steve Irwin way. The traffic lights had been out since Sunday morning and ironically they were working again within a few hours of the accident. But this was not the only incident at the crossroads. Earlier that day, tourists travelling from Roys Road were crossing the intersection heading towards Beerwah and were hit by a car travelling north on Steve Irwin Way. Luckily no-one was seriously injured. At the time a local business owner was heard to comment to the attending police that “…something should be done about the dangerous situation, otherwise someone’s going to get killed.” Unfortunately, no-one in authority took any notice and within hours the prediction was tragically borne true. A disgusted Glass House Mountains local contacted our office to say that on the Monday morning there were Police with radar guns doing speed checks on Steve Irwin Way near Back Creek Road, just south of the intersection. “There were two officers with speed guns checking cars going both south and north, then there were two Police up near the Golf Course waiting to pull people over. “I couldn’t believe that four Police were doing that when just up the road there was a potential death trap waiting for a disaster. They could have been doing point duty instead of fund raising. “And then to read in the media that a Traffic Branch Senior Sergeant said there was no Police to put on intersections. What a joke.” Other locals spoke about the danger at the intersection, seeing near misses with people not knowing how to approach or turn at the intersection without the lights. We asked Queensland Police what they would suggest motorists do if the situation happens again where the traffic lights aren’t operational.
Senior Sergeant Shane Panoho from the Sunshine Coast Traffic Branch said they were frustrated with drivers at the moment, as this was the seventh fatality on the Sunshine Coast this year – with three of these being in the lower Sunshine Coast area. “If the traffic lights are not operating, motorists should proceed with caution when approaching the intersection and apply the normal give way rules. “Ensure that you have clear vision of the intersection and that the carriageway is free and unobstructed. Motorists should also be courteous to other drivers,” he said. “The police will attend an intersection to direct traffic if the resources allow.” In next week’s paper, we’ll give an explanation of just what this means for drivers using the intersection next time here are no lights. If you have suggestions on how the intersection could be made safer when the lights are out, let us know on editorial@gcnews.com.au
Letter to the editor I’d like to send my heartfelt healing wishes to the family of the young lady who died at the Beerwah turn off of Steve Irwin Way on January 29. My sorrow for you is mixed with frustration and disapproval towards the police of this town after driving through Beerwah twice on this day. Yes we had just been hit by a huge storm but rather than man this intersection, with cars flying through it at 80km, I witnessed the police with their speed guns booking people going past the Beerwah State School less than 1km away at 8.45am. The lights had no power even then. My question to the police is why had this busy intersection been left unmanned all day until 1.00pm when this poor lady was killed? Even at 2.00pm when I went back through, why was there only one police officer and a civilian in the middle of the intersection directing traffic. When will greed and the chase for more money stop and the police do the right thing over the almighty dollar? My question is - did you even make enough to cover the funeral of the life you cost. Because if you did you know you owe the family at least that because you let them and the community down. May this lovely lady rest in peace. Healings to all Frustrated Resident, Glass House

Community News New equipment – checked out
Contributed by Ted Prickett Recently the SEQ Catchments Community Monitoring Team Leader, Cheryl McLeod, held a familiarisation exercise of new equipment for nine volunteers at the Peachester Hall. Quality monitoring of local rivers and creeks, including the Stanley River, Coochin Creek, and London Creek, is routinely undertaken on a monthly schedule by the volunteers.
Leaping Lizards Playgroup Contributed by Clare Urbahn The Leaping Lizards Playgroup has a fresh new timetable and we currently have vacancies for the new school year.
Gabrielle Urbahn, Connor Gassner, and Hannah Gassner enjoying a slide in the playground
We have altered our times and our activities to better suit the school run and the seasons! We will be meeting on Tuesdays from 9.00am - 11.00am at the Glass House Mountains Neighbourhood Centre (opposite the Post Office). In the summer we will play outside first using the gated, shady park and our own play equipment, and then have a shared morning tea followed by inside play with both free play and craft. In the winter we reverse the timetable and always finish with songs and stories. The kids have lots of fun and the parents enjoy our friendly, welcoming company! We really encourage you to give us a call or drop in to join in the fun! The first two visits are free ($4.00 per week thereafter) and we are Playgroup Queensland affiliated. Last year we bought you a ‘Travelling Tales’ about John and Margaret Rouhan’s European trip. They regularly send care packages which include a copy of Glasshouse Country News to their son Michael, who is a serving member of the RAAF currently serving with the Peace Keeping Forces of the United Nations in South Sudan. Micheal likes to read GCNews before sharing it with the locals. Not sure if this furry local enjoyed the read – but by all reports the paper may not be able to be in any condition for further reading. Michael is currently doing a six month tour of duty and is expected home at the end of April. He has accumulated some leave and is planning to go on a safari to Uganda to see some of the wildlife and hopefully some gorillas before finally returning home.

Thongathon gets underway
Contributed by Valmai Phillips Things have started moving ahead already with the thongathon for villagers in Seaside in Port Villa and the pile of donations is starting to grow. Wimbleys Hardware and Smileys Jewellers at Beerwah and the GCNews office in Glasshouse have agreed to come on board as drop off points for any donations. And the first dozen thongs have also been donated – some great looking Carlton Mid Strength ones from Sean at Glass House Mountains Tavern and some rainbow coloured ones from GCNews. Along with getting thongs for the community I am also really keen to get some basic sporting equipment, and school stationary supplies for the eighty students that attend the local school. So far I have received donations from Beerwah Print and Stationery who have given me some exercise books, Glass House IGA, Woolworths at Beerwah and Office Works at Morayfield who have also kicked in some pencils, rubbers etc. Amart at Morayfield donated nine high quality sports balls – three for volley ball, three for soccer and three for netball, and Declan in the store kindly let the air out of them to make them easier to transport. Thanks to everyone for their enthusiasm and support – and I can't wait to see how much we are able to achieve by working together on this. www.gcnews.com.au

Proud parents took Historical photos from school archives have been happy snaps of their incorporated into the modern new signage children embarking on their primary education journey. Soaring school costs can scorch family budget
Locally Owned... Locally Staffed...
with Ross Wolstencroft
School expenses are putting a further squeeze on the family budget, with the average cost now almost $2,000 per year for each Queensland State School child (up to year 12). This cost may be far exceeded for parents who choose for their children to be educated at the vast range of private schools available. A recent report shows that during the lifetime of an average state school education (up to Year 12) Queensland parents could expect to fork out more than $25,000 on ad hoc expenses. For private schools, this could easily top $100,000 per child! So, although the school holidays are coming to an end, spending on the kids is far from over. Do you know how much you spend on education each year? It is worth the exercise of adding up last years’ costs for your kids – such as school textbooks/ stationery etc, tuition fees, building funds/levies, clothing, computer/internet, excursions/camps, travel, extra-curricular (music, sport), and other incidentals. And what about tertiary education? The cost of sending kids to university can be horrendous, especially if you fund it is yourselves so as not to be indebted to the Government’s HELP scheme. One answer to future expenses is to plan – saving now for the future– particularly for secondary and tertiary education fees and costs. There are a number of savings strategies available, ranging from special bank accounts to savings plans generically known as Education Bonds. These are a type of life insurance policy that usually provides the following features: • Tax Effective: Income taxed at the corporate rate, not your marginal tax rate. Therefore no impact on your personal tax while invested.
• Tax Free after 10 years: If investment maintained for 10 years, no personal income or capital gains tax is levied • No Impact on your Personal Tax: After invested for 10 years, no income or capital gains assessed on your annual tax return, ever. • Access to Funds: Funds invested may be accessed any time. Tax rebates apply if funds withdrawn prior to 10 years • Range of Investments: Only choose investment options that suit your personal risk profile • Nominate Beneficiaries: Proceeds can be paid very quickly if required • Child Advancement Policy: Allows you to invest on behalf of a child without being penalised by the punitive tax assessment of minors. Enables you to create very beneficial child investment strategies for the future. Such benefits make these investments an ideal way for grandparents to help with their grand children’s future education. By setting up such a savings plan, they can help give the grand kids a huge head start in life, without upsetting their own personal situation – either from a tax, or Centrelink benefit perspective. For more information about how to best plan to provide the best possible education for our future leaders, please call Ross Wolstencroft at Arrow Financial.

Debt reduction a focus in uncertain times In the face of rising interest rates, many homeowners may be considering consolidating debt to ease the pressure on their household budgets. While refinancing your home loan to consolidate debts can be an effective way of achieving this, in the current environment it’s important you work closely with your Smartline Adviser, Teresa Harrison. Borrowers with significant personal debt levels who have built equity in their homes in recent years may be able to access that equity in order to pay out personal debt. Typically called a top-up, this approach allows home owners who meet the www.gcnews.com.au
lenders’ criteria to borrow additional funds against the value of their home. In addition to refinancing, there were a few simple steps homeowners can take to reduce and clear debt, and improve household cash flow.
need – such as magazines, takeaway coffees, impulse purchases, dining out or buying lunch at work instead of making it at home? Cut out as much of this type of spending as possible.
Once you’ve worked out where you can save money you will have improved The main priority should be to clear any unsecured debt in your household, your cash flow, which you can then assess your spending, write up a budget direct into paying off any unsecured personal debt, such as credit cards and and ensure you don’t increase your personal loans. personal debt levels. Start by recording all of your expenses for the month. This is often a confronting, but very valuable exercise. You can then ask yourself how much of your monthly income is being spent on things you need versus things you don’t
While this approach does require discipline, it’s important that you’re not too hard on yourself. If your budget is too tight, you’ll find yourself running out of money. It is very empowering to see your debt levels reducing.
Teresa recommends her clients regularly review every aspect of their financial situation and it’s particularly important to keep speaking with your adviser about changes in the mortgage market and how they affect your financial situation.

Despite E. Cameron’s stats and rules on heavy haulage along Coonowrin Road, over the past year we have still been contacted by several residents, most elderly, on the impact the trucks are having on their emotional and physical health. One resident is pursuing a claim against these businesses and Sunshine Coast Council citing dramatic increase in anxiety, stress and asthma in the past few years. Our position is to monitor and campaign on issues affecting animals and our research has revealed an increase in the size and number of semis, including triples. Noise pollution also impacts on day to day behavior of wildlife and in cases studied it can even result in extinction. Maintaining the road is no reason for any business to cause intense anxiety to some residents and untold stress and confusion on wildlife. One Saturday morning also we counted 242 trucks and police officers also cited speeding regularly. We request Hanson Quarries and Basset Barks update the community on what they will do to somehow balance the disgusting noise and air pollution with the impact it has on our community. It is about time they are asked to step up and do the right thing and substantially decrease their fleets in our area, so that all of us are at one with nature in Glass House. Jaylene Musgrave Founder – Vegan Warriors
Emily Madden and her family would like to say a massive thank you to Debbie and Sarah Willis from Beerwah’s Bank of QLD. As well as organising the recent ‘Bake Sale’, they donated the lovely raffle prizes and spent many hours baking delicious goodies for the stall. Thank you so much Debbie and Sarah, your efforts are very much appreciated! Thank you very much to everyone who baked for

Heat wave … what heat wave? Contributed by Helen Page
While the weather is always a popular topic of conversation, the current hot dry summer has ramped up discussion about climate trends. It has certainly been one of the longest dry spells local residents can remember, combined with recordbreaking temperatures in many parts of Queensland. Even the climate optimists are starting to worry. Some comfort can be found in past weather records, which remind us that this has all happened many times before. Most readers will remember previous heat waves during their own lifetime. And if we look back through historical records we find accounts of conditions which make this summer look quite mild! My great-grandfather Albert McDonald, who settled near Maryborough in 1864, frequently mentioned the weather in his diaries. He attended an election rally on 30th January 1865, and comments, ‘110 degrees [43 deg C.] in the sun, not a breath of wind, and yet the people stood it for four hours’. On 24th November 1871 he records 120 degrees in the sun, and in January 1872 says the weather has been hotter than he has ever felt it before. The historical newspapers on Trove (trove.nla.gov.au/ newspaper) are, as always, a source of information.
At GCNews we love our readers to share their views on important issues in our local community, and to thank you for your efforts, we will choose one letter at random each month to receive a free ‘Family Pass’ to Australia Zoo. Please note that letters that contain personal attacks will not be considered. We want to find out what issues are important to you! The Brisbane Courier, 24 January 1896: HEAT WAVE IN QUEENSLAND. Continuance of excessive temperatures. Number of further deaths. (There follows a round-up of temperatures around the state, including Adavale 110, Winton 107, Bundaberg 94. Several deaths from ‘heat apoplexy’ were recorded in western districts.) In 1929 several newspapers report: QUEENSLAND HEATWAVE. Birds Drop Dead off Trees. BRISBANE, Nov. 25. 1929. A heat wave was experienced over a greater part of Queensland during the week-end. … At Stonehenge Down the registration was 118deg., while Winton recorded 117deg. At many places the birds fell dead off the trees. Sweltering conditions prevailed in Brisbane today, the maximum temperature being 100.4 degrees and the humidity 22 per cent. Then there was the 1940 heat wave. A BOM publication ‘Natural Hazards & the risk they pose to S E Queensland’ (2001) claims: ‘… the most severe heat wave experienced here, in terms of fatalities, occurred in January 1940, when at least 80 people died.’ So perhaps the summer of 2012-13 has not been so bad after all; and in this area there are always options for combating the heat. The photo shows members of the Kropp family cooling off in the Stanley River, c. 1950s.

with Vanessa Rumble If you haven’t already noticed, Hinterland Seafood has moved to a bigger and better venue, in the Turner Park Complex opposite Woolworths. Yes, Beerwah’s best seafood just got even better. Todd and Kara Harris are excited about their new premises and the positive feedback from old and new customers just keeps on rolling in. Still cooking up fantastic burgers, fresh seafood and the perfect chips, Hinterland Seafood also offers a variety of freshly made salads, icecreams and cold drinks, as well as a selection of fresh seafood to take away and prepare at home. There is an a la carte dining area now, so you can sit down and enjoy a quick lunch on the run, or bring a bottle of wine and glasses to enjoy with your meal. You can dine in or take home from 11.00am to 8.00pm Tuesday to Sunday (closed Monday), and you are also welcome to phone in your orders in advance on 5494 0577.
It appears to be a quiet little pub on the corner, but when you walk inside the Landsborough Hotel there is a nice buzz about the place. Right out the back, there is a big enclosed deck where you can enjoy dinner with family or friends. It’s nice and quiet and suitable for families, an intimate dinner with a friend or two or a big group for a special occasion. The menu is really diverse, so everyone is sure to be satisfied. The staff are all friendly, the prices are very reasonable and the food is good pub fare. I dined there with the family last Thursday night, and it was delicious. I enjoyed the fish of the day which was snapper, cooked to perfection. My meat eating man tucked into his Thursday night rump special for only $16.00, and my boys enjoyed the barbecue pork ribs and a kids chicken and chips. My little one loved his grilled chicken tenderloins, and I was happy to see that it was real, fresh chicken. Lunch and dinner is served seven days a week.

This past week has certainly been a challenge. It isn’t the first time Queensland has faced a disaster. This State and we will rise to the challenge of re-building. The State Government will support you today, tomorrow and in the weeks to come. Sunshine Coast residents who have been affected by ex-Tropical Cyclone Oswald and the associated rainfall and flooding can access assistance from the Queensland Government to aid in their recovery. There are several grants available to support individuals and families affected by the severe weather event. Personal Hardship Assistance Scheme (PHAS) grants are now available to assist those experiencing personal hardship, by covering the immediate, unexpected basic costs of essential items such as food, clothing and accommodation. A grant of up to $180.00 per person, up to a maximum of $900.00 for a family of five or more, is available to eligible people experiencing genuine hardship. Other grants available include the Essential Household Contents Grants, Structural Assistance Grants and Essential Services Safety Reconnection Scheme Grants. You can apply for help by visiting your nearest Community Recovery Centre or call the Community Recovery Hotline 1800 173 349. For those not affected, the best way you can help is by supporting The Flood Appeal 2013, a partnership between the Queensland Government and Red Cross. Donations can be made by calling 1800 811 700 or visiting www.redcross. org.au.
Andrew Powell State member for Glass House P: 5435 2013 Wild and Wet Australia Day weekend
The last few weeks have certainly seen some pretty wild weather around Queensland. Australia Day plans over the long weekend were thrown into chaos for most of us with the wet conditions and wild wind forcing people to stay in doors to keep dry and most importantly, to keep safe! To those who volunteer with the SES and any other community clean up organisations, I sincerely thank you for your efforts. There have been many power supply issues for residents in Glass House and I congratulate Energex for their efforts in getting supply restored. I toured the electorate during the weekend and got to see firsthand the extent of the damage and gain an understanding into the mammoth task ahead of Energex crews in the region. I know many residents were without power for up to five days and I thank you also for your patience. If anyone lost fridge and freezer items I would suggest you check if you are eligible for a grant under the State Government ‘Personal Hardship Assistance Scheme’. For more information and to check your eligibility please call – 1800 173 349.
Australia Day Events
Unfortunately most of the planned Australia Day events around the Coast were cancelled as a result of the weather. The annual Palmwoods Citizenship ceremony was cancelled however the RSL and Apex groups in Maleny soldiered on with their annual Australia Day breakfast. Caboolture Historical Village also forged ahead with their celebrations and it was a pleasure to participate in welcoming nearly 50 new Australian citizens. My congratulations are extended to the people recognised with Australia Day honours both on the Coast and across Queensland – your contribution to our great state is valued by all.
Calling all aspiring young politicians
Applications are now open for young people aged between 15 and 25 years to join the 2013 YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament. Youth parliament gives young people valuable skills and experience to help prepare them to become future community leaders. The program includes debating, negotiating and leadership skills and allows them to see and learn firsthand what it is like to be a Parliamentarian by learning about the rules, writing bills and debating them in the Parliamentary chamber. Applications close February 22 and information can be obtained by visiting www.qld.gov.au/ youth. I am happy to meet with any young people considering an application in my office to discuss any questions they have, so please email or call to make an appointment – glass.house@parliament.qld.gov.au or 5435 2013. www.gcnews.com.au
Health Check Get your child ‘Sports Ready’ this season - with a free foot screening
This offer is available for children from six - 18 years of age. Children’s feet are very different from adult feet as the bones and muscles are still growing. Balance, coordination and the sequence of muscle activity whilst walking, running and jumping are developed from complex signals sent from nerve endings in the joint and muscles of our feet to the brain. Alignment issues, flat feet, ankle pain or muscle weakness in the lower limbs can make it difficult for children to develop these fundamental coordination skills, and often lead to fatigue, clumsiness and pain. Your feet can be a great indication of your child’s feet in years to come as many musculoskeletal problems can be hereditary in nature. So, if you have any concerns, bring your child in to see the Podiatrists at Stepping Out Podiatry to check their feet alignment and gait (walking style) and any other concerns that your child may have. Did you know that certain foot conditions are best treated before the age of eight or 16 years? Stepping Out Podiatry is holding a free foot screening during the month of February for children from six - 18 years of age to get them ready for another year of their favourite sport. So phone 1300 881 082 to make that appointment.

Big band star to entertain Coast Jazz Fans
British-born singer Craig Martin, who honed his talents playing starring roles in British Theatre Musicals before turning his talents to contemporary swing will delight Sunshine Coast jazz fans. Now living in Brisbane and exploding onto the Queensland music scene in 2010, Craig has performed and thrilled audiences at many top venues across the state. Now Craig and his 10 piece swing band will perform his first show for 2013 and wow audiences at the Sunshine Coast Jazz Club show at the Currimundi Hotel function room on February 17 from 1.30pm. His interpretation of big band swing is a treat for everyone who loves the crooners and the sound of a big band: “The music of Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Dean Martin, And Williams and Michael Buble is in safe hands,” Craig said. Early bookings are advisable. Call Alan 5478 3137 for credit card or Ted 5491 6017 for more information.

Get up&Grow with Jade King
Jade is a local wife and mum, soil scientist and teacher who is passionate about vegetable gardening
Home-made organic sprays
As a Scientist I am Always asking questions and seeking qualified evidence. Regarding many organic sprays, there really is very limited scientific evidence as to their efficacy. However in defence, my research has turned up insufficient scientific studies in the area of organic sprays effectiveness in general and there is recent recognition of the need for more research and development in this area. There is however, substantial anecdotal evidence (general opinion) that various organic treatments work, and in some cases there is some preliminary scientific reasoning behind them. So as gardeners, which I think qualifies all of us as experts at trial and error at least, it’s always great to have a go. Here are just a couple of the more common home-made sprays and some associated research findings. Organic Pesticides Molasses spray – caterpillar control Directions: One cup of molasses mixed in with one litre of water. Spray over new foliage. Research indicates that sprays with molasses solution can alter the normal pattern of distribution of insect populations. Whether this is to our gardens benefit or not is left in question. As a sugary food source, it does attract insects, so I guess it comes down to whether it is attracting predators to the pest, or the pest to the plant? Anecdotal evidence however, suggests that critters would prefer to starve than eat the unappetising produce. Research in this area will be very interesting to follow.

paintplacebeerwah@tpg.com.au
Soap spray – aphids Directions: Two tablespoons of soap flakes into one litre of water. Spray onto affected plants. This has got to be the most scientifically proven organic insecticide that can be basically replicated at home. It works by simply suffocating the small soft bodied insects so that they are no longer sucking the life from your plants! Organic Fungicides Milk Spray – powdery mildew Directions: Mix 100mL milk with one litre of water. Spray regularly on both sides of leaves. There is substantial anecdotal evidence that milk treatments can be effective in the protection of some plants from powdery mildew and other viruses. It should be noted that there is some debate regarding the type of milk used, with gardeners advocating that it must be organic milk as it contains antibiotic qualities. I personally have not been diligent enough when it comes to applications or vigilant in my recordings when using this spray, so I can’t really judge this one myself. Organic Pesticide and Fungicide Bicarb and Condy’s Crystals – aphids, slugs and mildew Directions: One teaspoon of bicarb-soda into one litre of water. Add one litre of milk and a teaspoon of Condy’s Crystals (potassium permanganate). Scientific studies indicate that the key ingredient, potassium permanganate is effective in reducing fungal infections, yet its efficacy is compromised by environmental conditions such as rain etc. The bicarbonate soda is known to alter the pH of the leaf environment preventing fungal spores from germinating; however it does not actually kill the fungus. So that is about all the information I can dredge up on home-made organic sprays. I’m really keen to see how future research in this area goes as I strongly believe it is the most cost efficient and environmentally sustainable option for backyard gardeners. Until then, if it works for you, then why wouldn’t you use it! Until next time in get up and grow…
Hardest hit hinterland to receive free dumping extension
Sunshine Coast hinterland residents, in the areas hardest hit in the Australia Day weekend storms and rains, won’t miss out on being able to dispose of their storm debris for free. Last Friday Sunshine Coast Mayor, Mark Jamieson said that while the rest of the Sunshine Coast had been busy cleaning up after the storm and taking advantage of the no fee opportunity to get rid of vegetation and other storm damaged items at local recycling centres, hinterland residents have been hampered by flooded, damaged and closed roads, and no electricity. “Only in the last day or so have hinterland residents, the hardest hit on the Coast by the ex-cyclone Oswald storms, been really able to start cleaning up. “To make sure they can also get rid of their storm debris at no cost, the Beerwah and Witta rural transfer stations will continue to receive vegetation and other storm damaged items for free until Sunday, February 10.

“The extended trading hours will also continue, which means that hinterland residents can drop off their storm debris from 8.00am to 5.00pm until that date. “I encourage residents to help one another to take advantage of this easy way to clean up around the house after the storm.” Normal rates will be charged for waste that is not a result of storm damage. All other waste disposal facilities in the region will receive storm debris at no cost, only until February 3. From Monday, February 4 their normal operating hours and fees will apply. As a reminder, if your wheelie bin was not collected as per normal this week, leave it out and the waste contractors will collect as they catch up with their normal operations. www.gcnews.com.au

GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY ANGLICAN CHURCH
Glasshouse Country Ministers Fellowship This being my first contribution to the column for the New Year there should be all kinds of possibilities and endless topics from which to choose. Surely a few words could be found to describe my hopes for a new year, or the reflections on my rather recent arrival to the Caloundra parish and this hinterland region or perhaps the challenges that churches and individual Christians face together. Sadly, though I am more conscious of the fact that this is the first column I have written since the sudden death of Fr Stan Griffith. Stan was the ‘Catholic’ spot on the roster and he contributed to this same column. No doubt many readers appreciated his words and reflections which were brief and down to earth with some glimpses of humour that contained genuine wisdom and understanding. Stan was born in 1941, educated in Brisbane and studied for the priesthood at Pius XII Seminary, Banyo. He was ordained in 1971 and served in a number of parishes around Brisbane. Stan left active ministry for several years but was to return and spend over seven very successful years in Maleny while attached to Caloundra parish. While he was not someone comfortable on the large stage, Stan was never more at home
Father Kevin Smith Caloundra Catholic Parish than in the company of people as he prepared families for baptism or couples for marriage. He made a real difference with an informal visit and at the important time of sharing the grief of the family who had lost a loved one. He loved priestly ministry in the rural areas of the parish where he made many friends. Stan died suddenly on November 13 after suffering a stroke while playing golf with friends. At Stan’s funeral at Our Lady of the Rosary Church Caloundra his daughter spoke with deep affection for the father who had always guided, supported and loved her unconditionally. His priest friends spoke of the man of few words who was a natural athlete and sincere in all that he did. Stan listened to the God of love who spoke in the depths of his heart and Stan had the faith to respond to that loving God. His sincerity and genuine desire to be true to who he was called to be may have confounded some, but it inspired many more. I am sure the regular readers who benefited from Fr Stan’s reflections and his friends from the parish will join with me and his family to pray that he may rest in peace.

Breaking the Cycle - of Poverty
Two cycling enthusiasts from the Sunshine Coast Hinterland are embarking on a new adventure next week – the 2013 Great Ocean Road Challenge, for charity. While Barry Beaden is a seasoned social rider, his nephew Ben is relatively new to the sport. And while Barry has been on cycling tours before, this one is different, for a cause! The charity they’ve chosen to support is the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), which works in 125 countries around the world, including Australia. One local project that ADRA Supports right here on the Sunshine Coast is a Women’s Refuge, for victims of domestic violence. Ben’s brother Andrew worked in International Development for ADRA in Cambodia for 2012, and Ben also volunteered the same year with a bunch of young Australians, on a short-term project with ADRA Connections, building toilets for families of blind people in Vietnam. Ben says, “It’s so encouraging to see the dedication and outward focus that the ADRA staff have, both locally and internationally. It was an amazing experience to help the local Vietnamese tradespeople, working side by side with them to get the job done, and improve the lives of the disadvantaged in their town.” Barry and Ben are personally paying all costs associated with their travel to Victoria, so all
Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club We all know how important sport is to our children’s development. Games and sports are an opportunity for children to mingle with each other and get some exercise. Sport has also been proven to provide a more fulfilled childhood, especially for those whose passion lies in sports. Children that participate in team sports develop essential life skills such as building relationships, leadership skills, self-confidence and physical fitness. The Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club’s committees, previous foundation members and staff recognise these facts, as well as the social and economic benefits that the entire community gains in providing a facility that caters for a variety of sports.
Our dining rooms offer weekly specials at very reasonable prices, you are sure to find a family favorite on our menu. These rooms are also available for hire for weddings or private functions and our friendly staff are more than happy to assist discuss this with you. We are open every day and offer a range of indoor facilities including a gaming room, pool table, meeting rooms and have a fantastic deck overlooking our main sporting field which in season is a great place to watch the games! Beerwah Ladies Golf Club
Contributed by Jenny Kelly Well we all hoped for rain and Huey finally heard us. So this is what lady golfers do when there's no golf. Marjorie, Janelle, Carol, Beth, Pat, Fay and Lyn had a good catch up when the course proved too wet to play. Over the weekend when Oswald came to visit, the course suffered a bit of damage with trees losing branches and some uprooted. The greens staff put in a mighty effort to get the course back into playable condition by Friday. One tree which will be sadly missed is The Willett Tree, a lovely Bottle Tree planted beside the 9th green by one of our Life Members, Eric Willett. Eric and his lovely wife Una were staunch supporters of Beerwah Golf Club and were here right The bottle tree

The Beerwah golf girls from day one helping to create this wonderful club. Even though this tree has not survived, one of our long time members, Col Penney, will replace it with another Bottle Tree. The Ladies Weekend Pennant team played their first match for the year against Caboolture at Tewantin Noosa on Sunday and came away with a win. A great start to the season. Hopefully the wet weather will hold off so we can have a game on Thursday. Until then, stay safe and good golfing.

Paddy says "no, oi tink it's beef." Mick says to Paddy, "close your curtains the next time you're making love to your wife. The whole street was watching and laughing at you yesterday." More tales of mirth from Mick and Paddy A bloke at a horse race whispers to Paddy next to him, "do you want the winner of the next race?" Paddy replies "no tanks, oi've only got a small garden." Paddy and Mick found three hand grenades and decided to take them to the police station. Mick said "what if one explodes before we get there?" Paddy replied, "we'll lie and say we only found two!" A coach load of paddies on a mystery tour decided to run a sweepstake to guess where they were going. The driver won £52!
