Hi Everyone
T
here is a rule in our office that on Monday’s (which are our print day) we don’t go out and do photos in the morning or engage in any activity that isn’t about getting that week’s paper to print. However when we got a call recently to advise that Dr Chris Brown (The Bondi Vet) was going to be at the Twinnies Sea Bird Rescue centre on Steve Irwin Way on a Monday at 10.30am, there was a fair amount of discussion about how both myself and Sarah (our lovely receptionist) should go, and apparently the rule flew out the window!

Ryan Blomfield of Beerwah will be taking part in the ride to conquer cancer, described as two days, 200kms, one epic ride
Disclaimer
So you might be wondering why it would take two of us to go and get a photo – sadly I am a little bit scared of birds. Well actually they freak me out quite a bit, and I probably wouldn’t be able to get close enough to take a photo. I have some crazy idea that they could fly into my face and their beaks could peck my eyes out – so Sarah was only concerned about me, when she offered to come along and assist! I would hate to think that my irrational fear would rob our female readers of a lovely pic of the Bondi Vet in our March 13 edition.

When you have faced cancer yourself, not once but twice ten years apart - then the idea of taking on the task of fundraising and participating in a two day / 200km cycle ride is no big deal. Well, it doesn’t seem to be for Beerwah local Ryan Blomfield.

Cancer survivor Ryan will participate in the Ride to Conquer Cancer Ryan’s mum Ros Blomfield who used to work at Coochin Creek Frutigrowers Co-op at Beerwah, and who has also had her own battle with breast cancer a few years ago, is getting behind Ryan’s fundraising efforts and has collected a bunch of prizes and gift vouchers for a raffle. Raffle tickets will be available at Supa IGA Beerwah. If you would like to support his efforts it is very easy to make a donation via the website www.concercancer.org.au and go to the donation section. Put in either Ryan’s name or the team name cyc-co’s and you can make a donation. When I chatted to Ryan about everything he had to do, he clearly wasn’t stressed about it at all – maybe his ability to cope and stay in control of things has kept him strong and on top of his battle against cancer!

When Ryan was 17 he was diagnosed with cancer. He had eight tumours throughout his body and was given six month to live. Then last year – ten years later – he was diagnosed with seven tumours in his thyroid, which he has since undergone operations and radiation therapy for. The timing of his treatment meant that his wedding to the love of his life, Jenny was postponed and will now go ahead in May this year. So 2013 is really shaping up as a big one for him. Along with everything associated with the wedding, he will be doing the Ride to Conquer Cancer in August and then later in the year he is hoping to head to the UK for the Rugby League World Cup. Ryan’s fiancé Jenny heard about the Ride to Conquer Cancer – a 200km ride from Brisbane to Wivenhoe Dam on the Saturday, camping overnight at the dam and riding then the 100kms back to Brisbane the next day with the goal of raising funds for all types of cancer – and told Ryan about it. Once Ryan decided to take on the challenge his two groomsmen and Jenny’s maid-of-honour decided to get involved, as well as Jenny getting involved as crew assisting the riders along the way. They decided to call the team ‘The Cyc-co’s’. As part of the ride, Ryan needs to raise $2,500.00 to contribute to the $10,000.00 of funds the team need to generate before they can participate in the ride. He also needs to get himself a suitable bike and do some training (yes that’s right – he doesn’t have a bike yet).

Mooloolah pool to remain open At Cr Jenny McKay’s Mooloolah breakfast meeting last Thursday, Mark McArdle MP, Member for Caloundra confirmed that the Mooloolah pool, situated on the grounds of the Mooloolah State School, will remain open to the public. “I have spoken with the Education Queensland Regional Director, Mr Greg Peach, and he has told me that they are committed to ensuring that the Mooloolah pool will be open for the public to use in time for the next swimming season. “Education Queensland will be discussing the management arrangements with Sunshine Coast Council, with the view to calling for tenders for someone to operate the pool,” said Mr McArdle. Sunshine Coast Sport and Recreation Facilities Manager, Heath Collie – also attending the breakfast meeting – welcomed the announcement from Mr McArdle. “Council are keen to have the arrangements finalised,” said Mr Collie. “We are committed to financially supporting the arrangement and look forward to entering discussions with Education Queensland as soon as possible. “We already have similar leaseholder arrangements with the community pools at Pomona and Tewantin, for example, and it should be possible to make the Mooloolah pool work as well.”
To date however, the peak local community group, Mooloolah Valley Community Association, have been left out of the consultation loop by Education Queensland. The Association President Alan O’Callaghan is concerned that the conditions of operating the pool set by Education Queensland may not match that which the local community expect. “We’ve been expressly told via a letter from Education Queensland that we will not be included ‘in the loop’, and that the negotiations will be between Education Queensland and the Council. “If a potential leaseholder is to be found for the pool, it’s very important that the operating conditions reflect what the community want from the pool – otherwise locals won’t use it. “But these won’t be known unless the Mooloolah community is listened to,” he said. Expressing surprise at the situation, Mr McArdle offered to organise, in cooperation with Cr McKay, a meeting between the Association, the office for the Minister for Education, Training and Employment and Education Queensland staff. With the pool closing on March 28, it is hoped that an agreement can be made between Council and Education Queensland, and then a successful tender can be found to operate the pool, before the start of the summer swimming season in early October. Otherwise it may be a dry summer for hot and bothered Mooloolah locals.
Aged care on the agenda Recently an Aged Care Forum was held at Coolum, and a special guest on the day was the Shadow Minister of Health, Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells. It was also attended by representatives of aged care service providers from across the coast. Is Beerwah the ‘Untidy Town’ award winner? The way we present ourselves to others gives away a lot of information about the type of person we are. The first impression shows how confident we are, how we value ourselves, and how we want others to perceive us. It’s the same with a town. It goes without saying that an attractive and well maintained town entrance describes a place that is proud about its past and positive about its future. Why is it then, that the main entrance to Beerwah looks more like something you would find in a third world country? All the planning documents tell us that we’re supposed to be a major regional centre – in the same league as Caloundra and Kawana. But the impression one gets when approaching the roundabout at the Roberts Road and Simpson Street intersection, is that this is a forgotten place; a place where the authorities don’t really care what locals or tourists think. The landscaping in the roundabout and garden beds surrounding the intersection is either nonexistent or so uncared for that it resembles an industrial wasteland. So why do our authorities seem to think we’re cheap, ugly and we don’t matter? Bob McLean, President of the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce says it not only looks unsightly, it sends a message to others that the town has no self-respect. “The entrance is a disgrace. The growth of the wattle saplings and the free range grass, presents an image of a community that does not have any self-pride.
“I had a TV crew in Beerwah doing a ‘Grey Nomad / RV Friendly Towns’ documentary last week. “I just hope they did not get the impression that this town can’t look after itself – so how could it care about visitors,” said Mr McLean. So, who is responsible for looking after the area? The road belongs to the Department of Transport and Main Roads, so technically they are responsible. According a Main Roads spokesperson, their main focus is road safety, not aesthetics. “Roadtek regularly inspects Kilcoy-Beerwah Road to ensure it is kept in a safe and trafficable condition. Our number one priority is safety. “We acknowledge the community’s desire to improve the appearance of state-controlled roads and corridors and will continue to prioritise vegetation maintenance accordingly,” they said. But according to the same spokesperson, it’s not their problem anyway. “When the railway overpass was constructed, Council required that landscaped garden beds be installed. Main Roads agreed but an agreement between Main Roads and Council would see the

Beerwah 'elcomes' you management and maintenance would fall back into the responsibility of Council.” So according to Main Roads, it’s Councils fault the area looks appalling. Putting this to Council, their response is that the area remains firmly under the management of Main Roads. A council spokesperson said Transport and Main Roads have not carried out a formal handover of the site with council and council has not received formal correspondence confirming same. So it seems they are each pointing the finger of responsibility at the other. Bob McLean’s had enough. “It is high time that Main Roads formally handed this maintenance over to council or reviewed the contract conditions and address their obligations. “It is clear Main Roads don’t care, but I’m sure the Beerwah community do,” he said.

Welfare Team – Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub-branch Having spent some time recently at the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub-branch Drop in centre talking to Bernard Verwayen about receiving the OAM on Australia Day I was encouraged by Bernard to make a return visit to do a story about their dedicated Welfare team. The Drop in centre for those that aren’t familiar with it – is a very basic former residential property located in Free Street at Beerwah. It’s just next door to the RSL Club and is accessed via a gate at the bottom of the Club’s car park. Every square cm of floor space is utilised for the work of the sub-branch, and while it always seems to be a hive of activity, it has a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. The Welfare team provide a broad range of support and assistance to Returned Service men and women and their spouses in Glasshouse Country as well as further afield. Bernard is the Senior Pension Officer Advocate and his team includes a combination of pension and welfare officers, and a number of ex-service personnel. “The Welfare team members are respectful of their clients, they provide confidential support and assistance and all exhibit a high level of empathy. These are all very important elements for the service we provide,” Bernard said. Pension Officer Danny Cooper said one of the biggest frustrations for the Pension Officers is that there are many returned service personal in our community who are not aware of what their financial entitlements are in relation to pensions and compensation. Quite often they also don’t know how to go about accessing them, he said. “This is where the Pension Officers can assist. You don’t have to be a sub-branch member or live in a specific location. You just need to come
Giving Lachlan a hand
The Beerwah-Peachester Subbranch Women’s Auxiliary has come to the aid of Lachlan and his family and are undertaking some fundraising to ease their financial burden. Lachlan Thomas is a lively threeyear-old toddler who has won the hearts of all who know him. He has an older sister and a younger brother, so life in their house is very busy and for Lachlan, it's also very challenging. Lachlan was born with mild cerebral palsy and epilepsy and for him the simplest tasks become demanding. Like most three-year-olds, he takes it in his stride but the burden on his family is growing and will continue to grow as Lachlan grows. Lachlan Thomas
The Welfare Team - (back row) Danny Cooper, Bernard Verwayen and Adrian Dunbavan, (front row) Sue Brumpton, Leigh Greatorex, and Tigist Western along to the drop in centre during opening hours with your discharge papers and we can start working with you,” he said. The Pension Officers work alongside the Welfare Officers who provide support for things that are impacting on people’s day-to-day lives. It could be getting them to medical appointments, visiting them in hospital, or assisting them with information about local community services that would improve their quality of life. Welfare Officer Adrian Dunbavan said they all have their client’s best interests at heart and always try to go the extra mile for them. “We really do as much as we are able to support our clients, depending on their individual needs – and the resources we have available to us.” The Welfare Team are there to help and if you or someone you know could really benefit from their assistance make sure you give them a call or drop in. Their office hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday and the team has someone on duty from 9.00am – 12.00noon and then from 1.00pm – 4.00pm on those days, their phone number is 5439 0641.
Lachlan requires many hours of therapy each week and a range of equipment to help him achieve his full potential. As Lachlan grows then his equipment needs to be replaced and he is growing fast like a normal three-year-old. There is to be a raffle during March and all the proceeds will go into a trust for Lachlan. Some of the prizes include earrings from Smiley’s Jewellers, a half day fishing trip from Top Catch and two nights at Montpellier Boutique Resort for four, a handbag from Beerwah shoes and many more wonderful prizes. The Beerwah community are renowned for supporting their own and we hope that they will continue to do so to make Lachlan’s life just a little bit easier. Keep an eye out for our raffle! www.gcnews.com.au
Supa IGA super donations Last week Beerwah IGA held their annual Community Chest presentation to their identified groups.
Animal Refuge, followed by the Beerwah Rural Fire Service and the Peachester State School. On the day, each of the groups thanked the new operations manager Steve Hammond for the donations. The rest of the groups who received funds were Bee Gees Soccer Club, Beerwah Anglican Church, Beerwah High School Chaplaincy, Beerwah State School P&C, Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade, Eden at Glasshouse Country, Glasshouse Country Christian College, Glass House Mountains State School P&C, Landsborough State School P&C, St Vincent De Paul, Sunshine Coast Animal Refuge and the Wildlife Warriors.
The funds provided by IGA are from when customers purchase signature branded products (IGAs premium brand). A percentage of this goes into the Community Chest fund as well as money raised from regular store raffles. This year saw the Beerwah store distribute over $7,500.00 to 13 individual groups. The individual amounts received are a reflection of the percentage of total tokens placed into their boxes. Interestingly, the group that received over a quarter of the funds was the Sunshine Coast

Community News Permanent record of visitors to the area
Since taking over the role as Senior Tourism Consultant at the Glasshouse Visitor Information Centre Jayne Wilson noticed that not many coming into the centre were signing the visitor book on the front counter. So she got thinking and wondered if the book was put onto a lectern by the front door – would that encourage people to record their visit? And so with a little assistance from the Glasshouse Country Menshed the centre now has its own handcrafted and ‘upcycled’ lectern. Peter Kluver who is the President of the local Menshed is also a volunteer at the visitor information centre – so Jayne didn’t have to go far to make it all happen. The creative bunch of fellas from the Menshed have reused a number of elements from the recycle centre at Beerwah to create a solid and stylish piece. The old table leg makes a perfect centre piece
EXCITING FRESH MENU CREATED BY PASSIONATE COOKS
Jayne Wilson with Peter Kluver, Frans Mens, Andy Henry and Peter Ryan with the upcycled lectern for the stand and with a bit of sanding and varnishing it looks fabulous. In recognition of the hard work undertaken and materials required, Sunshine Coast Destinations made a donation to the Menshed.

On Friday night Brownie and I headed down to the Glasshouse Country RSL on the corner of the entrance into Glass House Township. For years they have been serving meals on a Friday night, prepared and served by a lovely group of volunteers who create a selection of well-priced home style meals. Each week they offer a $10.00 special and this varies from week to week. Fortunately for me, last week’s was steak and kidney pie with mash – which I love. Their range of regular meals are still well priced with steaks at $15.00 a head and fish and chicken meals priced at $12.00. It is a really friendly dining room environment and if you come on your own – you may even be invited to join others – which is what we did. The bar is open from 5.00pm and meals are served from 6.00pm – so one Friday night when you don’t feel like cooking, why not try it out? They will even serve the meals as take-aways.

The beautiful mosaic welcome sign at Peachester State School was designed and created by the Year 7 class of 2012, with the help of two very creative parents Mrs Priori- Smith and Mrs Lewis. Now high school students in Beerwah and Maleny, the class came back to Peachester School last week for a photo with the completed sign and Mrs Priori-Smith, a parent and mosaic expert who helped create the art work. Cheer Cup raises the roof at Beerwah High

Ê
Ê Ê Ê Ê Ê PREP TO YEAR 12
On Wednesday, February 13 students at Beerwah SHS literally raised the roof as they competed in the annual Cheer Cup – a forerunner to the start of the years sporting events. For the first two weeks of the year, House sports captains and vice captains have been working with teachers to build House spirit and come up with an inventive, colourful and Loud cheer to motivate their swimmers to rise to the challenge and take out the coveted swimming carnival trophy. Among much secrecy, students and teachers have selected songs to modify, planned costumes and organised catchy choreographed routines to show just how House proud they really are. After limited rehearsals everyone was ready to perform and rain was no deterrent at all. Judges were asked to rate each performance in relation to the following – participation, creativity, enthusiasm, noise level and appearance. This year all of the Houses were very creative but there can only be one winner and congratulations must go to Ngun Ngun for an excellent Cheer Cup presentation choreographed to Gangnam style. Hot on the heels of Cheer Cup is the first of Beerwah SHS sporting events – the swimming carnival. Although the rain did its very best to drown out the event, dedicated teachers, swimmers and cheering Year 12 supporters were not discouraged and the carnival went ahead. At times, the timekeepers and the cheering fans were wetter than those swimming and some modifications had to be made to events to ensure that all were safely back at school before the pouring rain could turn into a storm. The modified carnival saw Tunbubudla go back to back swimming champions. Go Budla. Many students swam exceptionally well under the difficult conditions and a number of students will now go on to compete for representative positions on the Sunshine Coast. Congratulations to all Age champions.

Business experts … who care Hinterland Accounting Services
The amount of tax you must pay can be minimised and organised, so that you can control and plan for this in advance. You should have a good idea of what your tax position looks like well before the end of June. Many times it is too late to make any changes after 30th June. Timing is important – do we buy that new car this financial year or on 1st July? Small businesses can claim up to $5,000 as an immediate deduction for motor vehicles, acquired from the 2012/13 financial year. The remainder of the motor vehicle value is pooled in the small business pool. This is depreciated at 15% in the first year, and then 30% until it is written off. Also small business is now allowed to immediately write-off any new business asset / equipment worth less than $6,500 (net of GST) from the 1st July 2012. Superannuation - Are you considering a tax effective super contribution for yourself, it must be paid by 30th June. Do you know what the super caps are this year? If you have employees, make sure their super for the June quarter is paid before 30th June 2013 to make sure you get a tax deduction this financial year, and not have to wait for 12 months. Retirement Planning! Will you have enough income for your retirement needs when you retire? Like most things, when we plan ahead we are more likely to achieve our aspirations. You need a planned wealth creation strategy. Over time this will maximise your retirement nest egg to provide for your family.
What do you expect from your financial planner? Someone who: - is honest - listens - explains simply - has no product biases - stays in touch - provides value - designs strategies to suit your needs

MARCH 6 2013
The boys at Hinterland Boxing Club have been undergoing an intensive training program in preparation for HBC’s debut into the Boxing Amateur tournaments being held at the Sands Tavern in Maroochydore on March 9. Jake Hennesy, 21, will be competing in his first fight in the Heavy Weight 91 kg Division (Senior Elite). Jake Molloy, just 13 years of age, will be competing in his first fight also in the 34 kg Light Fly Weight Division (School Boy). Taylen Pitt, son of Stephen Pitt, will be competing in his third fight. Taylen is 15, and in the 64 kg Light Welter Weight Division (Junior). Both Taylen and Jake Molloy are ‘south paws’, meaning they lead with their right hand which makes them awkward to fight. Jake is a tall boxer who possesses power in his rear hand. Team HBC will be weighing in on the day to be matched up for a bout on the night. It’s an exciting time for this local club. Hinterland Boxing Club is affiliated with Boxing QLD and offers a pathway to Olympic, Commonwealth Games and World Championship Boxing, so who knows how far these boys can go.

Each year at Glasshouse Country News we like to put together a ‘Women in Business’ feature and we link it in with the timing for International Women’s Day – which is on March 8. This year officially marks the 102nd year of celebrating International Women’s Day, which was established originally to progress towards gender equality. Here at GCNews we choose to showcase the success of a range of local business women who work hard to create business success – for themselves and their families. In our local business community there are many women who own and run businesses on their own, and there are just as many who run businesses with their husbands and partners and who together do a great job in creating a successful business. Quite often running / managing a business presents challenges and dramas and you can find yourself asking, what am I doing this for? So I say to the many women of Glasshouse Country who own / manage businesses, thanks for taking up the challenge and for creating local employment and contributing to creating a diverse and thriving local economy. Cheers

Debbie Willi
s
After working for other financial institutions and the corporate sector of Bank of Queensland, Debbie and her husband Jeff decided to open a branch of Bank of Queensland in Beerwah in 2003, in the community in which they live. Debbie believes one of the real strengths of Bank of Queensland that their clients appreciate is that the staff don’t get moved around, which enables them to develop great relationships with their customers by getting to know them as individuals. “While we are small enough to offer personal service, we are still able to offer a wide range of banking products and services including insurances,” she said. “We provide local friendly service and we are the only bank in Beerwah that opens on a Saturday morning. As working women, I believe that while it is critical for us to be good time managers, I think most of us need to remember to have a little time out for ourselves, and of course a sense of humour doesn’t go astray. “If you haven’t been into our branch and met our team, we are always there with a hello and a smile so come in, we would love to meet you.”

She opened her own real estate agency About Real Estate in Beerwah in 2007 and joined First National in 2011. Her background is in Accountancy and she operated a Chartered Accountancy business in Switzerland, which included all property matters i.e. sales and management, and new developments. Ursula believes that her business is to serve people living in Glass House Mountains, Beerwah, Peachester, Landsborough, and Mt Mellum by listing, marketing and selling their properties. She needs to find people wanting to live in these townships and then get them to buy her listed properties. In this current market another aspect of what she does is to educate her clients on current property market and price movements. Ursula said the reason she’s been able to attract sellers to our area is because she delivers what she promises. “I am honest, down-to-earth and I can see outside the square and therefore propose solutions, if there are problems,” she said.

Patricia Shaw
Patricia Shaw is a familiar face to many locals, having lived locally with her family for 37 years and also having participated in many community activities with a genuine commitment to making Glasshouse Country great. When the Commonwealth Bank opened its doors at the Beerwah Marketplace back in 2008, the community were pleased to see that Patricia was the branch manager. With over 36 years experience working within the financial industry and a true local, they knew she would understand what was important to them. “I have always been interested in helping people achieve financial wellbeing and working in this industry has allowed me to fulfil that interest,” Patricia said. “Commonwealth Bank is the largest of Australia’s ‘Big Four’ banks. My staff and I believe that excellent customer service should be available to every customer who walks through our door. “Our personal branch motto is ‘we are determined to offer a unique and welcoming banking experience by excelling in customer service’.” Patty said during her free time she likes to go for walks on the beach, read and spend time with family and friends. To other people, particularly women in business, she suggests finding a balance between work and family life. “Be yourself and you’ll be happy and healthy. Everyone needs a little help, never hesitate to ask.”

Glass House Township looks ugly
I have total shock, disbelief and disgust at whoever decided to cut down the leopard trees in the Glasshouse Mountains IGA carpark. I have heard that the reason was because a branch had fallen on somebody’s parked car… well, if you had done any research before you heavily pruned them a year or two ago, you would have learned that pruning a specimen tree hard like that will make them more susceptible to snap, dropping branches – where ordinarily they wouldn’t. Leopard trees are used by councils to make spectacular street trees… no pruning required. One example close to home is the ‘King Street’ Leopard trees in Caboolture near the council building. The loss of these trees has made the Glass House Township look ugly. As one voice for many, I hope that the garden is replanted with some new trees for the beautification of our town. While you’re at it, I also suggest mulching the garden beds properly to stop the unsightly weeds. A Berndt Glass House Mountains
No it’s not just you
Responding to comments regarding the dilapidated state of the old Retravision store in Beerwah in last week’s GCNews. Beerwah will never develop into a major hinterland town with our current governments. Still waiting for improvements on the cross road on Peachester Road and Old Gympie Road! Still waiting for repairs and resurfacing of Old Landsborough Road after the 2011 flood! It’s only taken 12 months to build a toilet block in Mill Park. Nothing will happen to Beerwah until we have substantial infrastructure as in an affordable and reliable rail system. Colin Batch Beerwah
Flood relief payment
From my experience the payment is still NOT being paid to the Sunshine Coast. Farmers are only just now being able to apply for relief. All other applications are being rejected, and the cut-off date for applications was February 17. People who got their applications in before the cut-off date may appeal the decision but it’s not looking good according to the people I spoke to when they rang to reject my application. I know, it's crazy! The entire eastern Queensland coast except us are getting the relief, hopefully the government will wake up to themselves. Also why aren’t our local members lobbying the local / federal government on our behalf. Kaz Noble Mooloolah Valley
Hinterland Relay for life is on again
Firstly I would like to thank Glasshouse Country News and the local community for supporting the first Relay for Life in Beerwah in 2012. We had only 11 teams but those teams managed to raise over $27,000. That money went towards cancer patient treatment, accommodation and research. Last year 114,000 Australians were diagnosed with cancer. Sadly 43,000 lost the battle and currently over 750,000 are living with cancer. We are back again this year, hopefully bigger and better on October 19 and 20. You can register your
team by logging onto www.relayforlife.org.au. If you need any information or assistance please ring Sara Morley of Cancer Council on 5451 6003 or me on 5439 0976. Beckie Newing Beerwah
Don’t take no for an answer
Regarding Leanne Cox’s message, on February 20 and Lea’s subsequent message on February 27, a friend has just advised me, (she still doesn’t yet have her phone or computer back on!) that she received the usual objection to the application, as other readers have, and objected to the decision. She was informed by the personnel in that office, to encourage others to object to the rejection of their claim forms, stating why – as they still met the ‘criteria’ (long term power or phone outages – no water pumps or sewer operations etc), even though the area was not (yet) ‘designated’. The upshot was that the more people that apply, and then contest the decision of ineligibility, the better the chance we have of getting the designation overturned. So please folk, don’t just take no for an answer! Object. What do we have to lose? If we keep at it, and the MP has a go, we may yet get recognised for the power and phone losses – and all attendant losses. Besides, a poor girl lost her life because of the power outages, and because the issue was not taken seriously by authorities. That was tragic and unnecessary. I think they need to recognise that the Hinterland suffered too. Lives were placed at risk here – not many had the ability to access emergency personnel should they have needed it, and more were at risk than normal with flood waters and clean ups – with the necessary use of private chainsaws etc. (Note: this letter is not meant in any way to diminish the awful events suffered by those in the ‘hot zones’ with flooding.) Susan Richardson Peachester
Is it Glass House or is it Glasshouse?
On many occasions I have been asked this question and I usually say the same thing ‘go with the one that you think sounds better’ as I really do not know. I have lived in beautiful Glass House Mountains for five years now and I really love all it has to offer and would also like to know which name is actually correct, or is it both? I would love to say when asked that it is the first one however the majority of local businesses go under the second one. Either way I do like both, however it is interesting to note that all the principal listings online such as: Wikipedia, RACQ Tourist Info., Chamber of Commerce, real estate property listings, postcode listings, Wotif.com/accommodation listings, Sunshine Coast Destination, Whereis.com/maps and Dept. of National Parks etc all use ‘Glass House’ yet most of the local businesses use ‘Glasshouse’. For example: Glasshouse Country
News, Glasshouse Mountains Camping Ground, Glasshouse Mountains Sports Club, Glass on Glasshouse Eco Lodge, Glasshouse Mountains Medical Centre, Glasshouse Mountains News, Glasshouse Mountains Holiday Village, Glasshouse Mountains Newsagency, Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network and so on. Therefore, I was wondering if there is a reason for this, so when I’m asked the question in future I’ll be able to give a better answer than ‘dunno’? Is it a requirement for businesses here to use ‘Glasshouse’ and the other format ‘Glass House’ used only by Department Listings and so on? I also wonder if it will ever change sometime in the future where everyone uses the same name. C Fryer Glass House Mountains Editor’s note I look forward to hearing what others do, but when we took over the paper we decided to set ourselves some rule that we would follow. Glasshouse Country (two words) refers to the area – incorporating from Beerburrum – Mooloolah Glass House Mountains (three words) – name of township Glasshouse (one word) referring informally to the township of Glass House Mountains Business or organisation name we use the name they supply us. Cheers Lea
A bit of thought would be just great
I’ve been a Glass House Mountains resident since 2002 and I guess I didn’t notice some things when I was mobile, but now I rely on my electric wheelchair to get me around, there are challenges all the time. There are small day to day ones that get hardly a mumble. When volunteering at the Information Centre I pointed out the fire exit was located where there is no ramp. I joked, “what do I do, jump?” and said I was the crash test dummy. I do the wheelie bin dodge on a Monday and cars parked on the footpath are all just part of life. There are times when it’s just not funny. At the end of August last year I went off the edge of a path in my wheelchair, landing on rocks on my face, requiring 55 stitches. It was a serious accident and I still have the scar on my face. This was because Council hadn’t changed the light bulb in the last four plus years. It’s great that I can travel by train and bus, but there was the bus driver who took the corners too fast so I slid to the other side of the bus and my wheelchair tipped over. Then there were the two occasions the train guard forgot to bring the ramp up to my carriage and let me off. The kerbs that have been too steep, resulting in ambulances and pain. Isn’t it discrimination that I can’t travel safely as able bodied people do? I spent 10 years riding motorbikes, rather large, fast ones and not always safely and never once had a hospital visit. Fortunately I misbehaved spectacularly when I was younger as I’ve had multiple sclerosis for six years and have lost count of my hospital stays. A bit of thought from the powers that be would be just great. Sharon Chamberlain Glass House Mountains

Health Check Good health is about personal responsibility
Hinterland Boxing Club
Chiropractic is simple and natural, honouring the wisdom of your body. Drs Valerie and David Shahar of Living well Chiropractic have helped thousands of people enjoy relief and better health for more than 15 years. By improving posture we can improve our body’s functions, including breathing, digestion, hormone production and the immune system; as well as safe guard against severe joint and nerve damage associated with poor posture techniques. Your spinal column holds the key to many of your health problems as well as many of your health solutions. The nerves pass through the spinal column as they branch out to your cells, tissues, organs, glands, and other parts of your body. The spinal column supports these nerves in an ingenious way with a series of connected bones, called vertebrae that protect the nerves while allowing your body a full freedom of movement. A thorough spinal evaluation is imperative for young and old as ultimately, good health is about personal responsibility. Proper nervous system control of your body with chiropractic care can help you stay active and enjoy life. Scientific state-of-the-art methods are employed to reach maximum correction with specific exercise programs being an integral part of the healing process. At Living Well Chiropractic our aim is to actively engage the community by educating and equipping them with the knowledge and the right type of care to improve their health.

Not your average bluegrass band
We all expect something different from our music. For some of us it provides comfort, allowing us to indulge, even luxuriate in our memories of how and what we might have been doing at different points in our life. I am not uncomfortable with that notion - music takes me, as much as any other, back to my past stories, but music for me is a living breathing thing and there is nothing as exciting as what is being created now or will be created tomorrow. Every now and then an act comes along that really piques my interest. Over the last six months I have got to know the work of the New York based ‘renegade indie chamber bluegrass group’ Punch Brothers, who toured Australia in August of last year. They have been described by legendary producer T Bone Burnett as “one of the most incredible bands (America) has ever produced.” I for one won’t argue with that. For me they contain within them the best of what the US can offer - innovation, virtuosity and tradition. My background is in the classical music tradition and I hear Bach, Steve Reich and Bang On A Can in the Punch Brothers sound as much as I hear
Django Reinhart and Dixieland. The band themselves identify the influence of the Beatles, the Beach Boys, Radiohead and the Strokes. I think they might best be described as a alternative bluegrass outfit. In fact, with a line-up of violin, banjo, mandolin, acoustic bass and guitar, it is easy to make that call. A big identifier in their sound comes from the virtuosic, occasional choir boy antics, yet soothing tenor quality of vocalist Chris Thile. Confused? Youtube provides a good example of what they do. See what you think. http://www.youtube.com/user/ punchbrothers. The albums I am enjoying most at the moment include ‘Whose feeling Young Now’ (2011) and ‘Antifogmatic’ (2010). Humour is never far away in their music so it was no surprise to find the Punch Brothers covering a classic from The Cars. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YxgrEbpidw&list=PL8E6899A5190C6BF6 For an interesting interview you won‘t do better than Andrew Ford’s 22 minute interview from Radio National http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =xE5yHE4H4rM&list=PL8E6899A5190C6BF6

Glasshouse Musicians Club Contributed by Michael Whiticker Thank you to the 40 plus people who dropped into the Coffee and Tea Merchants on Sunday afternoon. The weather did the right thing by us and we enjoyed a full afternoon’s music. Retaining our good record we welcomed a new performer in Hamish Sewell who gave us Teddy Thompsen/ Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan numbers and then surprised us by attempting Irving Berlin’s ‘What’ll I do’. Hamish assured us it was his first public performance and if this is the case then he is off to a good start - he has a fine folk voice, competent guitar technique and an interesting taste in music. Once his confidence develops I am sure his work will grow in stature. Our recent regular Adrien Powell gave us the club’s first didjeridoo performance with a rendition of 'Solid Ground' in which he attempted the guitar, didj and vocal roles. Being a drummer I wouldn’t have been surprised if he had turned to his cajon at some point in the song, instead he saved it for his accompanying work with our regular backing musicians Paul and Doug.
Other performers on the day included Frank Moroney with one of his usual well thought through sets and a particularly entertaining group of songs from Doug Pullen delivered in his inimitable tongue in cheek style, right down to a warning as to the audience friendliness of the song’s contents! Cowboy was back a with strong set including a fine rendition of the 'Ode to Billie Joe' and Tina and Gavin gave us songs which once more showed off Tina’s beautiful singing voice. Paul Fagan entertained us with his impersonation of Johnny Cash’s vocal inflections and I took the opportunity to break out my recently acquired Cole Clark Violap – a lapslide guitar that brought many in the audience forward for a good look. A big thank you to our host Steve Moon and all his willing staff at the Coffee and Tea Merchants and we hope to see you many of you at our next show which will be Sunday afternoon, March 10, same time, same place.

Energy Australia The Queensland Government recently welcomed an announcement by EnergyAustralia that it will cease using door to door sales techniques to sell electricity and gas contracts at the end of March. One of the complaints I hear most often in the electorate, is the tactics used by door-to-door salespeople who arrive unannounced and I applaud one of the country’s leading energy retailers for listening to frustrated consumers. It is important customers make their own informed decisions and not be badgered by intrusive practices. EnergyAustralia has definitely taken a step in the right direction and I’m hoping other energy and gas retailers will now follow its lead by stopping this.
Beerwah State School I have an update on the Beerwah State School traffic concerns. As you might recall I submitted feedback in regard to upgrading and improving safety measures outside the school to the Minister for Transport and Main Roads. Minister Emerson had called for recommendations into school zones that require the installation of flashing light signs. Unfortunately Beerwah State School was unsuccessful in the first round of funding for the installation of the lights. I will continue to fight for the flashing lights to be made a priority as it is important to protect young children crossing that very busy road.
Ewen Maddock Fish Management Inc Finally I’d like to congratulate the Ewen Maddock Fish Management Inc for the tireless efforts in promoting the restocking and maintaining fish levels at Ewen Maddock Dam. I was able to attend the inaugural Fish Stockers Challenge aimed at raising much-needed funding to replenish depleted fish stocks and it was great to see the turnout of keen fishers for the ‘catch, photograph and release’ style competition. Congratulations to those who took out prizes on the day and I’m hopeful the success of the event will see it continue into the future. As always please don’t hesitate to contact my office if you wish to discuss an issue or simply have a chat on 5491 2780. www.gcnews.com.au

God distressed too? The rains have come and gone; or so it seems. But here amongst the mountains, many of us had to face the reality of the aftermath of cyclone Oswald, and the low of the past few weeks. Winds, rain, more wind, more rain. And with it all was the tragedy of death, destruction, loss of homes, destroyed crops, and flooded businesses. All of us have been affected. Did God send the floods? Was it His fault? Should He take the blame? My friend from childhood, Col, would say that anyone affected by the rain or the floods should take the blame themselves; “living and working in an area prone to flooding is your own personal choice and therefore you just have to accept it.” I don’t agree with Col. Some things are beyond our control, or at least difficult to avoid. Our lives are not organisable with mathematical precision. For me the idea of God sending these weather patterns to bring us grief is hard to accept. The God I find in the Gospels is the one described in Luke chapter 12. In discussion with His disciples, Jesus said ‘Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings? And not one of them is GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

forgotten before God. But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 'Fear not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.' Luke 12:6-7’ It may be difficult to grasp that God is interested in each of us so intimately. At times of loss, stress, confusion, and dare I say flooding, it is reassuring to be able to trust in God. There can be found strength to face the issues involved in rebuilding our lives. However dreadful the circumstances, there is help in trusting the one who demonstrated His love by the giving His son Jesus. He knows what distress really feels like.

Get up&Grow with Jade King
Jade is a local wife and mum, soil scientist and teacher who is passionate about vegetable gardening
Building the Perfect Patch
Once again it would seem that the beginning of Autumn has been welcomed in by flooding rains. Most of my temporary patch is probably located somewhere down Coochin Creek and what remains is either flattened by the torrential rain or has burst open from too much water intake. On the bright side, there could be some interesting crops springing up on the banks of Coochin Creek in the coming months … if it stops raining! I have decided however, to focus my attention on getting my permanent garden completed. That way, at least my garden will remain in its location in the next downpour and I can use current observations to determine the extent of the drainage required. Assuming we don’t actually get washed away whilst trying to build our new patch, we are on track to potentially have the garden up and running to start our winter crops. I am so incredibly excited about this. I simply am busting to eat straight from my veggie patch again! So whether you are starting out or your garden just needs a top up, the method that I adopt can be applied to both. If you have read my column in previous years, you would already have heard of ‘lasagna layering’, and in my personal opinion this is one of the best ways to provide a good year long supply of nutrients cheaply. My version of ‘lasagna layering’ is where the garden beds are filled predominantly with alternate layers of lucerne mulch, spent mushroom compost and manure as indicated in the diagram. However, if you are just topping up your garden you only need to do the top four layers. When it comes to the manure layer, anything you can get your hands on is great, but generally the nutrient scale from highest to lowest is chook, goat, pig, sheep, horse and then cow.
Be alert for Senegal tea plant
Recent quick and cooperative action between Biosecurity Queensland and Sunshine Coast Council staff has possibly averted a serious outbreak of Senegal Tea Plant (Gymnocoronis spilanthoides) developing at Old Maleny Road, Landsborough. Senegal Tea is listed in the most dangerous class of Declared Pest Plants in Queensland (Class 1). The aggressively growing semi-aquatic pest plant has the potential to seriously degrade our waterways and wetlands if left uncontrolled. A Council spokesperson said that the initial infestation was about 10m long by 2m wide. “Biosecurity Queensland initially removed the flowers to prevent spread. This was followed up by further control works by Council staff. “We’ve been investigating neighbouring properties and so far, we’ve located it on an adjacent property and several small dams. “With continued cooperative efforts between Council, Biosecurity Queensland and the affected landholders, we hope to be able to locally eradicate this serious weed outbreak,” said the Council spokesperson. Senegal Tea is characterised by growing in waterways or boggy soil, having serrated 5-20cm long leaves growing in opposite pairs along the stem. The stem is hollow when broken and easily takes root from stem nodes. The distinctive flowers grow as clusters of several white pompoms, with each pompom being from the size of a pea to about a marble. If you think that you may have seen this plant, you are asked to contact Sunshine Coast Council immediately on 5475 7272. It is important not to remove the plant yourself, as this can easily lead to the problem becoming much harder to manage in the long-term. Further information on the weed can be found on the Biosecurity Queensland website at www.daff.qld.gov.au Council officer Ken English inspects the infestation site for any regrowth Inset - Senegal Tea has distinctive white pompom flowers (photos courtesy of Sunshine Coast Council)

Once your garden is filled, it helps to leave it settle for about two weeks and then plant seedlings or seeds into pockets of compost. I plan to start focusing on raising winter vegetable seedlings as soon as the last block is in place. Hope you gain some inspiration to start up a patch or continue to tackle the challenges, as the reward of fresh organic vegetables is great! Until

Property Management with Loretta Morgan from Jam Property
What to look for in your property manager I always hear the same thing from prospective customers and clients, “My property manager never gets back to me,” “They never follow up,” “They always tell me what I want to hear but they never actually do it.” Has this happened to you? When looking for a property manager, you need to be looking for a manager that spring cleans on at least a weekly basis and runs a weekly follow up system for all outstanding www.gcnews.com.au

issues. Ask your property manager what system they have in place for follow up and if they can show you their system or give you an example. This will be the difference between getting what you’ve asked for and never hearing back. What about your property manager spending your money without your authority? Yes, that’s right, spending your money! If I had a dollar for every time I heard that, I’d be rich. Always make sure
that you have a written agreement in place for your property manager to obtain your authority in writing for any expenses incurred on your property. Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country Glasshouse Country BeeGees Football Club A word from our sponsors Bowls Club Contributed by Dennis Hume Sunday, February 24 - Social Bowls: 12 members played two games of Triples. Di Garland, Brendan Freshwater and Brian Saunders def Lyn Griffiths, Marleen Bertram and Chris Freshwater. Leisa Craven, Warren Blackbourne and Kerry Capern def Richard Kossen, Troy German and Trevor Bertram. Social bowls are played each Sunday afternoon. Cost is currently only $5.00. Wednesday, February 27 - Ladies Bowls Day. Rained out! Thursday, February 28 - Open Pairs Bowls. AM Game deferred as green was too wet. PM Game was playable and 24 members took part. Winners were Clive Sinton and Graham Richardson with 2 + 48. Runners up with highest score in either game were Max Viterale and Di Viterale, after a three way count back + 24. Saturday, March 2 - Super Challenge. Men’s and Ladies Bronze Division 6/7 game set to play Mooloolabah at Glass House was rained out. This will be played next Saturday. Men’s Division 6/7 played Woombye at Woombye going down 5 games to 0. The game finished early due to rain. Saturday, March 2 - Quarterly meeting was held at 9.00am. No one wanted to room with Mick, because he snored so badly. The men decided it wasn't fair to make one of them stay with him the whole time, so they voted to take turns. The first guy slept with Mick and went to breakfast the next morning with his hair a mess and his eyes all bloodshot. They said, "man, what happened to you?" He said, "Mick snored so loudly, I just sat up and watched him all night." The next night it was a different guy's turn. In the morning, same thing, hair all standing up, eyes all bloodshot. They said, "man, what happened to you? You look
awful!" He said, “man, that Mick shakes the roof with his snoring. I watched him all night." The third night was Bill's turn to sleep with Mick. He was a tanned, older biker, a real man's man. The next morning he came to breakfast brighteyed and bushy-tailed. "Good morning!" he said. They couldn't believe it. They said, "man, what happened?" He said, "well, we got ready for bed. I went and tucked Mick into bed, patted him on the bum, and kissed him good night on the lips. Mick sat up and watched me all night." Submitted by A.Harold, Beerwah
