Hi Everyone Each year on March 8, International Women’s Day is held throughout the world and no this isn’t an event that requires the purchase of cards and gifts, but a day of acknowledgement of women’s achievements. Glasshouse Country has plenty of dedicated women who run local businesses and we are profiling some of them in this week’s edition and then again in next week’s edition. You will no doubt recognise many of the women featured, but we hope that you will also get a further insight into what makes them tick; what they have done previously and also maybe listen to their tips for other women. And before I start getting any complaints from the blokes – later in the month we will be running a feature entitled ‘Men at Work’ so you will have your chance to be
featured in our pages as well. As the State election campaigns are now in full swing we have also included a profile on the four candidates that are running for the seat of Glass House and in next week’s edition we will include the profiles for the three candidates running for the seat of Caloundra. So I hope you enjoy this week’s information packed edition. Regards,

Miracle dog renamed Lazarus Simone Turner couldn't quite understand why the receptionist at Graeme Lean's Landsborough vet surgery was doing a record search for her dog Scruffy under ‘L’. Apparently, the receptionist had heard Graeme refer to the dog as Lazarus and assumed that was his name. In actual fact, Graeme was making a biblical reference to Lazarus of Bethany who according to the Gospel of John, was brought back from death by Jesus. The night before, Simone and her husband Trevor had raced Scruffy to Graeme's surgery in Landsborough after they discovered him having a seizure and frothing at the mouth. "During the short drive to the surgery, Scruffy was having a lot of trouble breathing and he was fitting. I tried to help him by squeezing his chest in time with his laboured breaths but as I carried him into the surgery I could feel that he had stopped breathing all together." Scruffy, a curious, nine-month-old Jack Russell
Terrier, had ingested a large amount of Bufotoxin, a milky white poison found in glands on the heads of cane toads which in large doses, are lethal. Dogs will froth and paw at the mouth, vomit, tremble, stagger, collapse, have seizures and die. "Scruffy had arrested by the time he arrived here,” veterinarian Greame said. “This is the first time I have seen a dog make a recovery from such a bad case of poisoning," he said. After reviving Scruffy and stabilising him, Graeme sat with him for hours into the night making sure that he was ok. Scruffy has made a complete recovery and has returned home to his relieved family who now sings Graeme’s praises and perhaps even worships the ground he walks on. "All he needs now is a longer beard and some sandals!" said Simone of their own special miracle worker. Graeme said if your dog has symptoms like those above, wash the dog’s mouth out immediately with running water and seek veterinary advice as soon as possible.

First it was the seemingly unresolvable issue of water supply with Unitywater, followed by Council’s refusal to remove an exotic tree poisoning the station’s tank water. The final blow was a bill of more than $30,000 in damage and stolen equipment following a break in at their Coochin Creek headquarters. Now, Lou Spann and the members of the Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade are wondering how much bad luck their volunteer brigade can take. While they wait to find out how much their insurance will cover, the brigade has been overwhelmed by the level of support the community has shown in the past week. “It’s the generosity we’ve always known,” Lou said. “Other than the funding we receive from the fire levy, we are completely reliant on our own fundraising efforts and the support of the community, and yet again, they’ve come to our aid,” he said. In the past week, Energex have offered to replace the generator that was stolen in last week’s burglary, Beerwah Small Engines have offered to loan the brigade chain saws, and other local brigades have given them radios and other equipment necessary to operate on a day to day basis. But it would seem that is the least of their problems. The Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade has much bigger issues which threaten its future. Ironically, their biggest concern is how they are going to pay for the water that is central to their whole purpose.
Despite Unitywater claiming that no firefighters would have to pay for water, the Beerwah brigade currently have no water supply after left being high and dry by the water authority. Council were willing to upgrade the pipe to the station, but Unitywater said it had to be done by them. They are now dependent on a 5,000 litre tank installed by Council, which, in another twisted tale of bureaucracy gone mad, they cannot use. Instead, they rely on bottled water to flush the toilets at the station, and have to fill their tankers at a hydrant in Beerwah. The water in their tank is unusable, poisoned by an exotic tree species that overhangs the building, on council land, which council is refusing to remove. The cost to remove the tree has been quoted by an aborist in excess of $5,000. “Up until October last year, for 22 years, we had a reticulated water supply. “Today, Unitywater is telling us it will cost more than $2 million to supply us with water, so we have to rely on a 5000 litre tank, which we can’t use because the water is poisoned by an exotic tree species our landlord won’t remove,” said Lou. “This is 2012, not the dark ages, and yet those in authority seem to think our situation is ok?” Somehow, Lou and the crew of Beerwah Rural Fire Brigade remain a resilient mob, but he reckons they’ll shout the bar for the person who can help them out of this dilemma.

Kids in the kitchen garden When is a cookbook not just another cookbook? When the recipes have been tried and tested on some of the toughest critics around, kids! And that is certainly the case for Glasshouse Country Christian College’s latest publication, Cooking Creations. Not only have most of the recipes been tested out on the students at the college, they’ve also played a part in growing the produce that features throughout the seasonal collection. With more than 200 recipes, Cooking Creations has been lovingly created by the school community and reflects the journey of the school’s successful kitchen garden over the past three years. The book, on sale for only $20.00, is a fundraising project for the kitchen garden program, where students from Prep to Year 3 are given the opportunity to grow, harvest and cook the produce collected from the garden beds they also help maintain. The school’s kitchen garden coordinator Mandy Ward said the most rewarding part of the program was the feedback from parents who share the stories of their children enjoying foods they’ve previously never eaten. GCNews, together with the Glasshouse Country Christian College’s Kitchen Garden program, has a copy of the beautifully presented Cooking Creations to give away to one lucky reader. To go in the draw, simply send us an email to editorial@gcnews.com.au or post a comment on our Facebook page explaining why

Mandy with some of the Year 1 students, from left Cooper Wharton, LilliJean Cruise and Lily Maguire “By involving the students in every stage of the garden, from planting seeds, watering and weeding, to harvesting their crops, they not only develop a greater understanding of the whole process, they also tend to really enjoy and savour the finished product, the recipes we then cook up in the kitchen,” Mandy said. Mandy said the recipes featured in the cookbook were a collection of those tested out in the college’s kitchen, as well as some family favourites shared by members of the school community. The book, a real community effort, was already proving very popular with families, offering a range of fresh and healthy family friendly recipes, Mandy said.

Thieves strike again
Thieves have struck in the hinterland again, this time targeting Mooloolah Cellars, in an attack very similar to the brazen burglary of Glass House Bottlemart two weeks ago. This time, around $7,000 worth of stock was stolen by the group of nine thieves, who rammed their way into the shop with a vehicle. The latest incident occurred shortly after midnight last Tuesday. Officer in Charge of Landsborough Police Station Sergeant David Coultis said police suspected the same group of offenders was responsible for the latest theft, given the similar nature of the offences. He said investigations were continuing, however if anyone has any information on either offence, they should contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000 or the Landsborough Police Station on 5439 9149. Beerwah Hotel’s Steven Holmes, who manages the outlet, said he was at a loss for words, following the second burglary in as many weeks. “The disruption to business is just ridiculous,” he said.

Ann Ross Sunshine Coast Council Division 1 Candidate
True CommitmentWorking for You I am an amateur historian and, like many others, have a rich appreciation for our area‛s past. The myth that historians live in the past and don‛t look towards the future does not and will never apply to me. I believe we can derive great social and economic benefit from the diverse layers of history our district holds and in fact heritage-related activities are now one of the most popular tourist activities in Australia. I am proud of my community efforts to promote our diverse past which include initiating heritage signage, the State heritage listing and publication of the history of Anzac Avenue, Beerburrum, and compiling information for the Glass House Mountains Visitors Centre. I continue to be an active member of Bankfoot House and am proud to be a member of the Sunshine Coast Council Heritage Levy Advisory Committee. Division 1 – Jewel of the Sunshine Coast!

Council has commenced work on the replacement of a timber bridge at Meyricks Road, Glass House Mountains.
Work has started on the replacement of the old bridge on Meyricks Road, which flooded again last week Divisional councillor Anna Grosskreutz said the existing bridge had reached the end of its serviceable life and would be replaced by a single lane reinforced concrete structure with improved flood immunity. The estimated cost of the project was $400,000 and was expected to be completed within 10-12 weeks, weather permitting. Meanwhile, roadworks on Coonowrin Road, including pavement widening, a new foothpath, cycle lane and dedicated turning lane was expected to get underway on Coonowrin Road next month. The $380 k project will include the construction of kerb and channel on the western side of Coonowrin Road, with an adjacent two metre wide concrete footpath, on road cycle lanes and protected right and left turning lanes into Sugar Coast Drive. The project was expected to start in mid-April and be completed within eight weeks, weather permitting.

From the Schools From Narelle Hill Beerwah State High correspondent
Beerwah’s brimming beginning At BSHS we’ve just passed the stage of settling back into school life and becoming accustomed to some new routines. It’s a good thing too because we have a lot on the agenda this year, but first a short recap of what has already transpired! One of my personal favourites so far has been receiving a free bucket hat upon our return. Sure, some people aren’t keen on the idea but I know that my Year 12 form class spent a good half hour discovering all the different styles we could create with one simple hat… sailor hat, fedora, cap and some others that I don’t think have actual names. Plus we are now sun safe! Can’t forget that. Our annual Cheer Cup kicked off our inter-house athletics year with a bang. It was a fierce competition between the four houses to produce the best war cry, resulting in a surprise victory for Ngungun (my house) by, rumour has it, a single point. Ngungun’s war cry was to the theme of SpongeBob Squarepants and may have involved swashbuckling pirates. The first actual athletics event though was the swimming carnival, a mixture of individual swims, relays and novelty events. Buddla dominated the points on that one. Also rehearsals have already begun for the school’s production of Grease, which isn’t set to open until late May. I’d suggest saving your pennies so you can buy a ticket to this one because there is no way it won’t be excellent with all of the gruelling effort going into it. As to what might happen in the future? A number of this year’s student council attended a weekend conference held by yLead to aid our leadership skills and give us some ideas to bring back to school and put into action, but that’s all hush hush for now. We’re a secretive little bunch, aren’t we?
Beerwah prefect receives USC scholarship Former Beerwah State High School prefect Tyson Blair has received a $6,000 Vice-Chancellor’s Merit Scholarship from the University of the Sunshine Coast. Tyson was among 56 recipients to be honoured at USC’s Undergraduate Scholarships Presentation Ceremony on Monday, February 13. The 18-year-old Beerwah resident said he was overwhelmed and flattered to receive the scholarship, which will help support him financially as a student. The OP5 graduate said he had applied to study USC’s combined Bachelor of Business/Bachelor of Science as he could not decide which of these fields he wanted to specialise in. “When I was at school, I always wanted to do business but I was also good at physics and chemistry. So when I saw that USC offered a dual science and business degree, I thought I would just do that,” he said. “I also spoke to quite a few people who said they loved USC because of its friendliness and environmental surrounds. “I am really looking forward to being at USC and getting back into the routine of studying after such a long break.” USC Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill said the University awarded scholarships, bursaries and prizes each year to reward academic excellence and to support students financially during their studies. “The University is very grateful to our donors for supporting our students as they pursue their educational goals and future careers,” he said. Tyson lists music and golf as his passions. He played the trombone in Tyson with Beerwah High deputy the Beerwah State High School band principal Tanya Hayden from Years 8 to 12.

2012 State election Glasshouse candidates Last week I went along to the official draw for positions on the ballot for the upcoming State Government Election for the seat of Glass House. Glass House will be contested by four candidates who will appear on the ballot in the following order Stewart Luke (Greens), Andrew Powell (LNP), Ryan Moore (ALP) and Peter Harris (Kater's Australian Party). We have given each of the candidates the opportunity here to introduce themselves to readers giving them a bit of background about themselves. In next week’s edition we will be doing the same for the Caloundra candidates who will be appearing on the ballot in the following order - Christine Anthony (ALP) Mark McArdle (LNP) and Allan McKay (Greens). It is nearing three years since I was humbly elected the state representative for the seat of Glass House. During these three years I have met and made friends with such a vast array of people that proudly call the Glass House electorate home. I started out life in Melbourne and then went on to spend time in Brisbane, Rockhampton and Sydney during my childhood. My family eventually settled in Burpengary just in time for me to complete my schooling at Grace Lutheran College, Redcliffe. From there I went on to the University of Queensland where I was awarded Bachelor Degrees in Science (Geographical Sciences and Physics) and Arts (Modern History and Russian). My career actually kicked off in public service within the Department of Defence in Canberra. I was subsequently employed by the Department of the Premier and Cabinet, and the Department of Child Safety. My area of expertise was in the field of ‘community engagement’ – a field where the government seeks the input and ideas of the local community and interested stakeholders when making important decisions. It was while working in this field that I decided to take my love of community engagement just that bit further and try my hand at politics. In addition to being the Member for Glass House I have also had the opportunity to serve as the Shadow Minister for the Environment which has afforded me new experiences and relationships with the environmental landscape across Queensland. I am committed to this region not least of all because it is a great place to live and work but my wife and I both couldn't think of a more perfect place to raise our five young children.
Born in Maleny and a lifelong resident of the Sunshine Coast, Ryan is passionate about the future of our fantastic region. Passionate about infrastructure and health and education services for local families, Ryan is committed to working with Anna Bligh to get the priorities right for Glasshouse. Educated at public schools in Maleny and Beerwah, Ryan is furthering his studies at Griffith University by distance education while living in Maleny. Ryan is employed in a local family run small business and understands that local business is the backbone of our community. In his spare time Ryan volunteers his service to community organisations focused on training, social inclusion and legal aid to improve the lives of locals and the life of our community. He has previously served as deputy state director for the prestigious youth-run aid organisation, The Oaktree Foundation. Ryan is passionate about the power of community broadcasting to bring communities together and has worked closely with Queensland icon 4ZZZ for many years communicating with young people across Queensland. As a lifelong resident, Ryan keenly understands the needs of the community, and looks forward to delivering strong local representation to Glass House.

Peter Harris
QLD Greens Candidate for Glass House
Katter’s Australian Party is proud to announce Peter Harris as its candidate for Glass House. Peter was educated in Toowoomba at the primary and secondary level and at UQ and ANU at the Tertiary level, and holds degrees in Arts (Computer Science) and Law. He is currently studying at the University of the Sunshine Coast towards a Graduate Diploma in Education. Peter began his working life as a builder’s labourer and a farm hand, and was also a member of the Army Reserve. Before branching out on his own, he worked in the Commonwealth Public Service up to the Director level, mostly in the Department of Trade, the Public Service Board and the Attorney-General’s Department. Peter was CEO and Principal Lawyer of his own small business law firm before he moved back to the Sunshine Coast. He is also a registered Migration Agent. He has travelled widely, and worked in China and the Philippines. He has taught at the Australian National University and numerous vocational courses, and is a long term member of the Community and Public Sector Union, and national union delegate to the Federal Attorney-General’s Industrial Democracy Committee. He has undertaken considerable pro bono work, especially in relation to mesothelioma victims, homeless people in the community, workplace injuries and complaints against Telstra. Peter considers Glass House to be one of the best places in the world to live and work. His wife Nida is a teacher, and their twin sons were born in December last year. They enjoy fishing and participate in Church activities.
Stewart has lived most of his life in Queensland and now considers himself a Sunshine Coast local. He spent a lot of time here whilst growing up, and has lived in Glass House Mountains since 2006. After completing his high schooling in Brisbane, Stewart worked in retail and the public service for a few years whilst developing his skills in community theatre. He completed a BA Communications, Theatre/Media, at Charles Sturt Uni and has had a successful career in Theatre and Events Management in Sydney. During this time he particularly enjoyed working with large and small scale community events where he saw what could be achieved when people come together to work to benefit their environment. He undertook further study to hone his teaching and training skills, and has completed a Master of Education in Adult Education. Missing their home state, Stewart and his partner returned to Queensland to be with many family members around the Sunshine Coast and Brisbane. Stewart has worked at Australia Zoo and for the Queensland public service in Brisbane. He gained a Certificate IV in TESOL from Mooloolaba TAFE, and now teaches adult English-language students where he is enjoying learning from the many cultures who call the Sunshine Coast 'home'. Stewart's talents and experience have combined to provide a strong foundation in organisational and management skills, and allowed him to enjoy every opportunity he finds. He has a passion for learning, an eye for detail and the energy to bring these two things together to work for our community. 8

Don't miss local business networking Rod Richards from Rod Richards Consulting is a small business mentor with the state government’s ‘Small Business Solutions’ program and his advice to local small businesses is put ‘Small Business Solutions’ at the top of your ‘to do’ list. Rod will be a special guest and sponsor of the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce’s networking evening to be held at the Beerwah Hotel, on Wednesday, March 21 from 5.30pm. Chamber President, Patty Shaw from the Commonwealth Bank, Beerwah branch said this is the Chamber’s first formal networking night for 2012 and, from past experience, those who attend find them a really useful opportunity to meet with other business owners who are operating in our region. “I would like to encourage local business people who may not already be Chamber members to come along and find out more about our group,” Patty said. “We time the event to start straight after work at 5.30pm and we generally go through until about 7.00pm. There is no charge for attendees and free nibbles will be served. “On the night Rod will be giving a six minute
talk about government subsidised training opportunities for small business, which no doubt many of us could benefit from,” Patty said. “When you’re running a business, it’s easy to get caught up in the daily grind, and forget about the bigger Rod Richards picture,” Rod said. “When you’re booming, things are great, but do you have a plan in place for when you’re not? “That’s where Small Business Solutions can help. We provide cost-effective, government subsidised, practical support on a range of business issues including planning, cash flow, finance, staffing, time management and customer service through one on one support and practical advice, right at your workplace. Well known and experienced accountants Leisa Thistlethwaite and Michelle Christopher-Blokland recently opened their new business Hinterland Accounting Services in Simpson Street, Beerwah. Leisa and Michelle have nearly 50 years of combined experience in the accounting industry, with the last eight years working in the local area. “Before this we worked in some of the larger firms on the Sunshine Coast, whilst still residing in the local hinterland area” Leisa said. “This makes us well equipped to understand the needs of the local business people, (both large and small business) so that we can provide a full service tailored to individual needs. ”We work closely with our clients to create a positive, friendly relationship to ensure the future financial success of all. “We offer a wide range of services, from basic tax and accounting services to retirement and financial planning. In this current economic climate, being prepared for the future has never been more important. “We hope to be able to offer an exclusive service to businesses, by providing them with support, advice and assistance across the whole spectrum of their accounting and financial needs,” Leisa said. After almost two years in the flooring industry, Jo still believes working with her husband and owning their own business has been a move in the right direction. Jo said watching their local business grow with the help of the local community has been a highlight. “We aren’t just a Carpet Shop, we are a Tile Shop, a Blind Shop and with the demand for D.I.Y. products, we are keen to show off our new products,” she said. Jo prides herself on friendly, honest advice, so if you have any questions it is definitely worth popping into their showroom to have a chat with her. ”Hearing our customers say they appreciate the before and after service we provide on a daily basis makes all the hard work worthwhile,” Jo said. Working in a close community has allowed Jo and her business to help support and sponsor local events such as Beerwah’s Big Night Out. Her advice to busy working mums would be to be organised. If it helps, do the grocery shopping online – then sit back and enjoy the special things in your life. In her spare time, after organising the kids, Jo loves camping and this year she intends to make more time for it.

Before entering the hospitality industry nine years ago, Andrea owned and operated a number of businesses including an RACQ / mechanical and panel shop, a fitness centre, and a small business bookkeeping service. “After selling my business I decided to do a TAFE course in Hospitality and work part time, however I enjoyed the work so much I took on the job of Assistant Manager at a Golf Club whilst still working casually at an RSL Club and later at the Sports Club,” Andrea said. “Locals know that the club caters for a variety of sports, however they may not be aware of our excellent function room that can be hired by anyone in the community, not just club members. “Being the only club in the area with a separate function area allows us to host seminars, training days, business breakfasts, weddings and other special occasions. ”We are also looking at putting in a barbecue at our tennis courts so that families can enjoy the playground and courts and plan a day out together,” Andrea said. Andrea’s advice to other women is to make sure you enjoy your work and are enthusiastic about it, also to ask for help when you need it.

As a group we feel the need to occasionally remind the community that our achievements are many and varied, and I am sure there are many people who still do not know of our existence. It may also surprise some residents to know that we have been the only environmental organisation in Glass House Country for over 21 years. If you have ever walked the Trachyte circuit or visited the Jack Ferris Lookout, you have trodden a path created by our members. Even the walking / cycle track between Beerburrum and Glass House mountains was originally a GMAN project. More recent achievements include revegetation of public areas eg Settlers Park, Page Street bushland reserve, and Coonowrin Creek historic camping ground. A number of private properties adjoining Coonowrin Creek have also been revegetated. Currently our members are involved in growing local native plants and the reintroduction of the Richmond Birdwing butterfly to the area. Through SEQ Catchments a small team regularly carries out water monitoring along Coonowrin Creek. GMAN assists the Trail Running Association of Queensland (TRAQ), with running and catering for two major events on the Glasshouse Trail running calendar. Our members are a bunch of friendly volunteers who also enjoy socialising together. However, like most groups, we need new and energetic members, especially those with an interest in the environment. Perhaps you are new to the area, have time on your hands and would like to meet new people. If so please contact President Cliff on 5438 7118 or Vice President Gwen on 5493 0029.

Glasshouse Mountains Bowen Therapy
Bowen Therapy is a model of simplicity; it empowers the body to heal itself. Precise moves are made over muscles, tendons and nerves which produce a relax and release effect. In most cases only one or two treatments are required and can be performed through light loose clothing. Pauses are made between moves to allow the body time to respond, it’s during these waits of two minutes on average that the client may feel some tingling, heat or a general feeling of relaxation around the area being worked on. Bowen Therapy continues to work for five days after treatment, it is very powerful treatment which works in unison with our bodies own intelligence. During a Bowen session, particular attention is made to the muscles shown in the diagram. The nerves which innervate these muscles can become pinched or challenged resulting in numerous conditions including backache, neck restriction, sciatica, knee and ankle pain and headaches. If you would like more information please ring me on 5496 9686 or 0413 779 193 and I will try and answer any questions you have. Appointments can be made Monday - Friday with the occasional Saturday. Living Well The Happy Mum
www.selfhelpformums.com
With Jackie Hall ‘The ONLY thing that separates a mum who is feeling overwhelmed from one who is not is simply how she THINKS about her experiences. That's it. She is not a superhero, or a naturally skilled, lucky mum gifted with perfect children and natural parenting abilities. She has had to learn just as many new skills and 'tricks of the trade' as you or I have had to. However, you will find that she differs from a stressed mum in how she THINKS about these challenges.’ Quote from ‘The Happy Mum Handbook’. Becoming a mother can be more difficult than we ever realised. We have grand visions of the kind of mother we strive to be, yet we often create these visions when we have no experiential idea of what it’s like to BE a mum. When our little bundles of joy arrive, reality soon kicks in, and can shock us with the realisation that motherhood is nothing like we had planned. Contrary to the warm and fuzzy Huggies commercials we see, motherhood can be a roller coaster of emotions. Loving motherhood one minute, resenting it the next and in between you could be consumed by feelings of anger, guilt and self-criticism. But we all seem to know that ‘natural born’ mum around us who seems to handle motherhood with ease. She never seems to get phased by the crying, the tantrums or the myriad of other challenges that arise as a mum. So what makes her so different? Is she just a better mother than you? The answer is a big fat NO! The only difference between that mother and you is how she thinks about her challenges. She just has a different perception of what these challenges mean about her and her life. It is my aim in this column, thanks to Glasshouse Country News, to teach you that stress is never caused by the events going on in your life. It’s how you have perceived that event and what you perceive that event to mean about you (e.g. I am a bad mother). By learning how to adopt a healthy mindset about motherhood’s ups and downs and by gaining an accurate understanding of your self-worth, you will find a way to enjoy motherhood and eradicate stress, depression and anxiety. www.thehappymumhandbook.com
Ashleigh to lose locks for Leukaemia
It was the thought of those who don’t have the choice of if and when their hair falls out that prompted Ashleigh Gray to take on the challenge of this year’s World’s Greatest Shave. Ashleigh, who works at Embracia in Glasshouse, said she felt lucky to have her health and family and would gladly lose her long locks to help support those not so fortunate. “It’s sad to hear so many people are diagnosed with blood cancers and it makes me feel very lucky to have my health and my family around me,” Ashleigh said. “I have always supported charities and just wanted to contribute something to the Leukaemia Foundation as it’s not just about finding a cure now, they also provide free services and wonderful support to people with blood cancers.” Ashleigh is donating a small portion of her weekly wage to the cause, and would appreciate support from others. She said she was especially grateful to the generous staff at Embracia, and Linda and the girls at Curves, who are also supporting her. You can sponsor Ashleigh by visiting her page at http:// my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/AshleighGray

Children keen to get behind their carer for World’s Greatest Shave
Daley Johnson will have plenty of helping hands when she lines up to have her long hair shaved next week as part of the World’s Greatest Shave. The childcare worker at Goodstart Early Learning Centre in Glass House Mountains will be hosting a special event next week at the centre to get the children involved, where they will be able to get their hair coloured before Daley loses her hair under the scissors of Michelle from Follow Me Hairdressers. Daley said she was really keen to lend support to foundation that provides support to sufferers. “Working in childcare and surrounded by young children all day, I feel very close to the issue,” she said. Daley is also counting the support of her club, Beegees, and the women’s soccer team she plays with as she counts down the days until the big event. www.gcnews.com.au

Rest in peace, faithful friend
I would like to send a bouquet of MANY THANKS to the team at Beerwah Veterinary Surgery for the caring and understanding way in which they handled my difficult decision to have our beloved 17 year old mini fox terrier, BUSTER put to rest. He was a faithful walking companion, an excellent announcer of visitors, very protective of his family (as many tradies can testify to) and a wonderful playmate and friend to my (now adult) children Nathan, Scott, Matthew, Anthony, Ashleigh and granddaughter Bella. He was a member of our family and loved dearly. He will be missed greatly but not forgotten. D Baker Beerwah
More money for nothing
Ex-councillor Dell Winkler has elicited a couple of responses from your readership. Here’s my two bob’s worth, Dell. I never voted for you at any local election solely because of the parlous state that you and previous councils have left Glenview Road in. Councillor Jenny McKay informs us by response to one of Dell’s letters that she does get ‘out and about’. It would seem that this does not include driving along Glenview Road. But, why should she bother? The western end of Glenview Road is the boundary between two council divisions. Jenny can blame it on Councillor Anna Grosskruetz. In any case it would seem that the present situation has doubled the chance of nothing being done. Your correspondents, Steve and Judy Dick, are very accurate with their description of Glenview Road. We have been living here for much longer and the road has largely not changed in that time. We had to drive our children to and from Glenview State School for nine years because the road is not suitable for bike riding. The traffic on Glenview Road has increased a lot in this time. This is particularly so of school buses, some of which are rather crowded. I would hate to see one of these on their side before council decided to pay some attention to the road. Steve and Judy Dick wonder why they pay rates for so little in return. They shouldn’t feel alone. We used to get a free kerbside (what’s a kerb?) pick-up. And disposing of green waste at the dump used to be free. This now costs me $8.00 per load. Today, after the good stuff was taken out of a load of household rubbish at Peirce Avenue, I was charged $14.00 to dump the rest. Even aspiring candidate Rick Baberowski should be able to work out that a free kerbside pick-up would be far more appealing than a few trips to the dump. It could be time for the residents of Glenview to practice a bit of civil disobedience.
Maybe we should simply withhold our rates payments until we start to see some value for our money. I fail to see that this would be criminal because we have been getting nothing for what we pay. There was a time where I thought that if I expected nothing from council I wouldn't be disappointed. I’m starting to get sick of it costing me too much though. Brad Boustead Glenview
Buses preferred means of public transport
In relation to Steve Attrill’s comments that he is the only candidate to have a stance on the light rail project, I can't at the moment see the benefits of building a multi-million dollar project to connect the hinterland with light rail, when we already have a fantastic bus service. I am not saying that the bus service is perfect, it is flawed like most public transport services, however, considering investing the millions it would cost to plan, build, staff and maintain this service, it would be better to put it into the creation of more busses, routes and frequency. I am pushing to see one service in the morning and afternoon out of Beerburrum and Glass House, so these residents can travel to the coast for work/appointments, without dealing with two forms of public transport. I can see where the light rail idea could be beneficial, however, I think investing the money in an already established service will be beneficial for the community. Not just that, but providing more services and busses can be implemented quite quickly, rather than a massive infrastructure project, where land, possibly even houses may have to be purchased and demolished to make way. Not to mention building of stations. In final, light rail; great idea, however the money would be better spent upgrading what we already have, and not wasting it! Rhys Reynolds Division 1 candidate
Backing Bob
We were very excited when we read in the Glasshouse Country News that Bob McLean will be nominating for Division 1 on the Sunshine Coast Council. We have lived in the Glass House Mountains and Beerwah area for 45 years. As farmers and business owners we have had a number of Councillors represent our community. We believe Bob is the best person we could have to be our representative in the new council. We have observed the community work Bob has been involved in and as a business man he is able to think outside the square. We believe Division 1 will continue to develop as a strong community with Bob’s thoughtful and progressive representation. Fragos Family, Beerwah
What were they thinking?
The announcement that council had allocated $500,000 for a pathway from Beerwah to Landsborough appears to me to be a smoke and mirrors statement from the divisional 1 councillor. This pathway along Steve Irwin Way stops at Australia Zoo, to access Landsborough, pedestrians and cyclists must cross busy Steve Irwin Way to the existing pathway along Old Landsborough Road via the Railway Line under pass, which is a waterway and is often flooded. The mind boggles at how dangerous this is to cross a busy highway with traffic travelling in excess of the 80km speed limit and to enter an underpass that may be flooded. What were they thinking when they approved this project? T Kaminski Landsborough www.gcnews.com.au

Australian homeowners are a step closer to plain English in home insurance with the release of a discussion paper on the Key Facts Sheet: Home Building and Home Contents Insurance Policies. The Gillard Government will implement a mandatory Key Facts Sheet, a one page summary that clearly sets out what is covered and what is not covered. It will improve homeowner's understanding of their cover and make it easier to compare policies. The Discussion Paper seeks public comment on the content, format, structure and provision of the Key Facts Sheet that will become mandatory for all home building and home contents insurance policies (combined and individual). The deadline for submissions is March 23. The discussion paper can be found on the Treasury website.

DEBT REDUCTION A FOCUS IN UNCERTAIN TIMES In the face of rising interest rates, many homeowners may be considering consolidating debt to ease the pressure on their household budgets. While refinancing your home loan to consolidate debts can be an effective way of achieving this, in the current environment it’s important you work closely with your Smartline Adviser, Teresa Harrison. Borrowers with significant personal debt levels who have built equity in their homes in recent years may be able to access that equity in order to pay out personal debt. Typically called a top-up, this approach www.gcnews.com.au
allows home owners who meet the lenders’ criteria to borrow additional funds against the value of their home. In addition to refinancing, there were a few simple steps homeowners can take to reduce and clear debt, and improve household cash flow. The main priority should be to clear any unsecured debt in your household, assess your spending, write up a budget and ensure you don’t increase your personal debt levels. Start by recording all of your expenses for the month. This is often a confronting, but very valuable exercise.
You can then ask yourself how much of your monthly income is being spent on things you need versus things you don’t need – such as magazines, takeaway coffees, impulse purchases, dining out or buying lunch at work instead of making it at home? Cut out as much of this type of spending as possible. Once you’ve worked out where you can save money you will have improved your cash flow, which you can then direct into paying off any unsecured personal debt, such as credit cards and personal loans. While this approach does
require discipline, it’s important that you’re not too hard on yourself. If your budget is too tight, you’ll find yourself running out of money. It is very empowering to see your debt levels reducing. Teresa recommends her clients regularly review every aspect of their financial situation and it’s particularly important to keep speaking with your adviser about changes in the mortgage market and how they affect your financial situation.

Just on two weeks ago now Christians across the world marked the beginning of Lent with the imposition of ashes on Ash Wednesday. Yet in a rather amusing dialogue I had a well-intended person inform me I had ‘dirt on my forehead’ while doing a spot of grocery shopping later that day. This got me thinking about the symbolism of ‘Ash Wednesday’. You see in the early church only public sinners wore ashes. But then in 1091 Pope Urban II ordered the first Ash Wednesday liturgy and Christians everywhere have been rubbing dirt on their foreheads ever since. Instead of simply having a penitential rite in which we call to mind our sins, we receive a very public reminder of our sinfulness. Dirt or ashes are something we constantly wash off our bodies and most mothers fight a losing battle keeping it off their children. It seems that only in the Church do we deliberately put it on the most public part of our bodies, our forehead! Why? Ashes often represent destruction and waste.

Dan St George will present Explosive Poetry: How poetry inspired by J Krishnamurti and Eckhart Tolle can help us to encourage a sense of stillness and mindfulness. Gold coin donation. Visit tinyurl. com/tsmaleny for more info or phone Jenny on 5494 3664. All welcome.

If you have missed the deadline your contribution will not be considered for the next edition. For contributions that do meet the deadline, every effort will be made to include them in the next edition, however if we receive more contributions than we

We find ashes in a cold fireplace. Ashes are often all that remain of a tragic house fire and some will have commemorative urns with the ashes of a loved one. Yet they can also hint at new life. Long before recycling became popular the Church got into the act on Ash Wednesday. Have you ever wondered where the ashes come from? They come from the Palm Crosses we used to celebrate Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem in the previous year’s Holy Week! You see the symbol of Christ’s glory becomes the symbol of our sin. Yet on Ash Wednesday, we’re not just another dirty face, we’ve deliberately thrown ourselves into the recycling bin of Lent, ready for renewal this Easter Day.

Energy savings are at the forefront of everyone’s mind these days. Ceiling fans are an extremely efficient way of cooling with running costs of about 1 - 2 cents per hour and can be installed from $89.00 per fan (three or more). Compact fluorescent down lights are another great energy saver. Halogen down lights can contribute to over 30 per cent of your bill, and at about $35.00 per light to install, the modern look doesn’t need to cost you the earth, and you will certainly save money in the long run. Energex are offering $250.00 to switch your pool pump to tariff 33. Our cost can be as low as $150.00, so don’t delay. Don’t miss the footy in a power outage. Keep your fridge and

Fantastic Fruits! Blemished fruit with a few spots or war scars … perfect! Home grown organic fruit and vegetables may not always be perfect to the eye, but they are definitely supreme when it comes to taste. Fruit trees generally require a longer maintenance period prior to produce and it is very difficult to achieve a year round supply of fruit in the average backyard. This seems to deter many people from venturing into growing their own fruit. However, the rewards are invaluable. We as a family have often eagerly anticipated the first fruits of each of our trees as one would the arrival of a new born. In our garden we have a number of different fruit trees including mulberries, blueberries, lemon, orange, mandarin, mango, apple, macadamia nuts, pecan nuts, pawpaw, passionfruit and bananas. Throughout the year the fruit supply is also supplemented in the vegetable patch with rockmelons, strawberries, pineapples and watermelons. Now our yard is not massive. Many of our trees we keep pruned to maintain them at a height that is manageable or espalier them where possible,
or more simply, they are dwarf varieties such as our ‘Lot’s of Lemons’ that can go in pots. Furthermore, we plant them amongst other plants around our garden where they get enough sunlight and the benefit of disguise from other foliage that can help to reduce pest problems. Whilst we have one mulberry tree growing for both mulberries and a great climbing resource for the kids, we also have a hedge of mulberry trees. This ensures an easier harvest and allows us to cover it when the birds develop a mulberry fetish. So, how to maintain your fruit? Whole books are devoted to this subject and information varies. However I have ever so briefly summarised what I grow and maintain into a table as a quick reference for all the avid gardeners in the region. There are so many more wonderful fruits out there to grow and ultimately I would love the challenge of growing them all, but space does become an issue at some point….I need more land! Until next time in Get Up and Grow…

Maintenance and tips

Fertilise three times a year with chook manure or dynamic lifter.
Prefer good drainage and regular watering. Shallow roots require thick mulching and limited competition. White-oil aphids on new growth.

Feed twice a year with manure or dynamic lifter when young but little needed when established. Regular applications of manure, dynamic lifter or compost. My general rule is when the manure has broken right down, add more and mulch. Feed twice a year with manure or dynamic lifter. Feed twice a year with manure or dynamic lifter. Pecans require frequent nitrogen applications. Both Pecans and Macadamia prefer consistent watering. Heavy nitrogen feeders, so regular blood and bone feeds.
Loves water. Keep pruned if wanting to access the fruit. Loves acid soil, so don’t lime! Protect from birds with a net if they become a problem. Well drained light soils best. Prune to promote spurs where fruit occurs. Water well. Maintain air flow through tree by removing branches that are causing crowding.
New guide to horse riding tracks A new guide to horse riding tracks was launched by Council at Maddock Park Recreation Area in Mooloolah last week. Horse riders now have access to a wide range of information about where to horse ride on the Sunshine Coast in one handy guide following the launch of a new guide in Mooloolah last week. The guide includes the location of where to park horse floats, and where to find facilities such as barbecues, toilets and taps and is the final one of a three part series – the first two guides provide information about walking trails and mountain bike riding trails. The Guide to Horse Riding highlights both signed and unsigned trails that pass through and along council road reserves, Conservation Parks, National Parks, State Forests, Plantation Forests and on land managed by SEQ Water. On the Sunshine Coast, signed trails suitable for horse riders are located on the Noosa North Shore, throughout the Noosa Hinterland on the Noosa Trail Network and at Ewen Maddock Dam, Dularcha Conservation Park and Mapleton National Park. As part of the implementation of the Recreation Trail Plan, council is developing a link between Ewen Maddock Dam and Dularcha Conservation Park for use by walkers, horse riders and mountain bike riders that is expected to be completed by the end of July. Copies of the Guide to Horse Riding Tracks are available from Visitor Information Centres and Customer Contact Centres, or by phoning council on 5475 8501.
Lots of sun and a sturdy trellis required. Vines decline after 4-5 years so begin planting a new plant in third year.

Your guide to sport in Glasshouse Country
Frisbee fun for you and your dog Canine Disc is a relatively new sport to Australia and all you need to get started is a dog and a disc. It is a great game to teach your dog for fun and fitness, and later down the track if you want to get serious you can now compete. Basically competition is about you throwing the disc and your dog catching it to get points. The further you throw the more points you get, however some games require accuracy and not just distance. There are also Freestyle events which involve putting a routine together full of tricks involving the dog catching a disc. For more information about the sport visit http://www.frisbeedogs.asn.au/ Canine Disc (frisbee) training is held on the second

Rugby League action was back in full swing at Beerwah on the weekend with the start of the Junior Season, the Seniors had Trials and the Bulldogs Hosted teams from Cairns, Mackay, Ipswich and Toowoomba on Sunday playing in the Statewide Under 16 and 18 Competitions. The Juniors seemed to enjoy getting back on the field judging by the standard of footy over the weekend. There were a few lopsided results as always in the first few weeks as the Sunshine Coast Junior Rugby League grades the teams at the beginning of the season.

Senior Trials on Saturday afternoon began with the under 18’s taking on Lowood and showed a ton of courage to come from behind and win the trial 24 20. The Women’s Open team had their Debut Game for Beerwah and showed some sparkling touches with a big win over the visiting Aspley Devils 50 - 0 and are looking forward to the season. A Grade jumped out of the blocks quickly against Lowood scoring the first try but the stags hit back with three tries to lead 18 - 4.The Bulldogs then started to get into stride and got back to 18 -14 which was the full time score. Sunday saw some good quality under 16 and under 18 action at Beerwah and also gave the club the opportunity to host top level Rugby League which was attended well. The Seniors have the bye in the first round and then play Caboolture at Beerwah on March 17 in Round 2 and are again at home in Round 3 against Bribie Island. We would like to see all our supporters come along and support the club. Anyone wanting to become involved in the club either in the way of playing, volunteering or sponsorship are encouraged to contact President Dean Roberts on 0418 816 605 to discuss.
Our first weekend of fixtures kicked off this weekend with the first and second division playing against Caloundra at Caloundra our second div team started well scoring the first goal by James. The boys fought hard all game and eventually went down 2 – 1, the signs are there for a big season from this team. Their combinations and team work was outstanding. The first division team contains a mixture of old and new faces which produced the goods on the night with a well fought 2-1 win over Caloundra. Our first goal was scored by Jarryd Doonan and the second was a great shot from Andrew Foster - welcome back Andy. The boys fought hard all game and in the second half showed what this team will be capable of, with only one reserve on the bench the boys stuck to their game plan and repelled Caloundra to the end. Our new striker Obed played extremely well and was unlucky not to get two goals. Ritchie our new mid fielder worked over time for us and the goalie Jarad Brownlie had a excellent first game for us saving about four goals. Next game Coolum at Coolum. Also Our Div 2 women’s went to Woombye to play in a tournament and our girls came away with the winner’s trophy with two wins and a draw. The girls were short handed with only nine players due to work or other commitments the rest of the team could not play. The girls start the season this weekend with the third and fourth division teams on Friday night; Players wishing to play this weekend get to training Tuesday 6.30pm. MARCH 7 2012 |

One wish
A man was walking along a beach deep in prayer when suddenly the sky clouded above him and in a booming voice the Lord said "because you have tried to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish." The man said, "build a bridge to Hawaii so I can drive over any time I want." The Lord said, "your request is very materialistic. Think of the challenges for that kind of undertaking. The supports required to reach the bottom of the pacific. The concrete and steel it would take. I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly goods.

Take a little more time and come up with another wish, a wish you think would honour and glorify me." The man thought about it for a long time. Finally he said, "Lord, I wish that I could understand women. I want to know how they feel inside, why they cry, what they mean when they say 'nothing', and how I can make a woman truly happy." The Lord replied, "You want two lanes or four on that bridge." Submitted by Naomi Preston, Landsborough
