uring the week we had plenty of emails, phone calls and people dropping in to ask us what we knew about these rather tall new residents that had recently moved to Glass House Mountains..... all is revealed on page 3. From intrepid explorers to adventurous traders, camels have long been associated with opening up the inland areas of Australia. So it’s a bit of a surprise to find that camels may be about to put Glass House Mountains on the national stage. Lauren Brisbane lives in Glass House Mountains and is the chair of the Australian Camel Industry Association. She has a deep passion for camels and is in the early stages of setting up a camel milk industry right here in Glass House Mountains. “There are three operators we’re working with – one in Western Australia, one in the Burnett region and our very own in Glass House,” explains Lauren. “We’ve done the research and feasibility studies, and we’re now in the early stages of developing the practicalities of the milking process.” Milking camels is nothing new – in fact it has supported many cultures for centuries, and is now approved for sale in the US. Being a whole food, Lauren says that the milk has many health benefits. “Research has shown that it helps to treat autism, diabetes, Crohn’s disease, gastro intestinal disorders and is wonderful for people who are lactose intolerant,” says Lauren.

A camel has to trust you otherwise they won’t let any milk flow during milking. “They don’t produce a lot of milk, and the babies stay with them the whole time, so the production isn’t like a normal diary. But there is a huge demand in Australia and we think that with continued development, we’ll be able to provide a healthy whole food product as well as using the milk in soaps, creams, lip balms and lotions. “All going well, we hope to be able to start operations early next year,” she said. In the future - you might just see a skinny camel latte on a menu.

Good news for bad reception Following on from the recent story in GCNews about the Telstra towers at Jeffreys Road, Glass House Mountains and Tower Lane, Beerwah, Telstra have come through with some great news. According to a spokesperson, construction is on-track to commence in the first quarter of 2013, and it will take them six to eight weeks for the build.

This timeframe means that whole region should have dramatically improved mobile and wireless coverage by no later than the end of May 2013. With Council having released the draft planning scheme, it is important for everyone to take an interest and see what it says about where we live, work and play. Each week, GCNews will outline some of what the draft planning scheme includes for each of the townships that it specifically covers – these being Beerburrum, Glass House Mountains, Beerwah, Landsborough and Mooloolah. We’ll also put on our website in the ‘Hot Off The Press’ section, extracts of the planning scheme for each of the townships – so as to make it a little easier for you to take a look at what the document says about where you live. This week, we start with Beerburrum. The draft planning scheme includes the following predictions for some key growth indicators for Beerburrum. • Population: 2011 – 326; 2031 – 353 • Local jobs: 2011 – 154; 2031 – 215 • Land zoned as urban – 29 hectares • Number of single dwellings: 2011 – 103; 2031 – 123 • Number of multiple dwellings: 2011 – 2; 2031 – 3 These figures show that Council is looking to maintain Beerburrum basically as it is now, with

some limited growth within the areas which have already been earmarked for urban development – hence the population rise of 27 and only 20 new houses over the next 20 years. There will be some growth in local employment, which is mainly identified in the field of education and in the business centre. Part 7 of the draft planning scheme documents what are called ‘local plans’, which organise the planning scheme at the local level and provide more detailed planning for these areas. The Beerburrum Local Plan Code is located as Part 7.2.1 – a copy of which can be found on the GCNews website (www.gcnews.com.au – Read – ‘Hot Off The Press’). This document sets out what Council sees as the look, feel, function and form for the town. It specifically identifies that Beerburrum will remain a small village with an intimate rural character and identity, and that development is to occur in such a way as to protect and reinforce this rural village character. There are two key maps covering planning outcomes for the township and surrounds – both of which can also be viewed on the GCNews website.

A close band of brothers in war

Remembrance Day Sunday 11/11/2012

When 21-year-old Jack Barr enlisted in the AIF in September 1914 he was assigned to 1st Australian General Hospital. This would set the tone for his twin brothers, James and Alex who would soon follow him to war. Unusually, Jack Barr only served for 10 months before he was discharged and returned to Australia in September 1915. By then his younger brothers, eager for adventure, had put their ages up by a year and enlisted. Twins James and Alex Barr sailed out of Brisbane on October 21, 1915, but not before big brother Jack had left to fight again on October 5, perhaps in readiness to watch out for his brothers. On April 8, 1917 the three brothers were transferred together into the 5th Field Ambulance in France. They all suffered illnesses there, Jack with a septic knee, Jim with recurring boils and Alex also had a stint in hospital. In April 1918 Jim was gassed while on duty and sent to England to recuperate. Within a few months the boys would all be in England; Alex at 4th Australian Cookery School, and by June, Jack was there having treatment on his septic knee. Jack and Jim Barr returned to Australia in January 1919 and Alex as nursing staff on Aeneas in May 1919. But the bond between the boys did not end with their war service. Twins Alex and Jim took up adjoining soldier settler blocks at the Beerburrum Settlement and Jack, wanting to be near his brothers, also moved to the district.

Glasshouse Country RSL Sub-branch will host the 94th Remembrance Day Commemorative Service at the Cenotaph at Settlers Rotary Park at Glass House Mountains. Form up will be from 1035 hours, commencement 1040 hours. A light luncheon will be available at the RSL Club after the Service. Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub-Branch will hold their Remembrance Day ceremony at the Beerwah RSL cenotaph. Assembly 10.30am, service 10.50am.

Jack, Alex and Jim In October 1921, Jack Barr married Marion Gilvear in a double wedding with Jim who married Edith Bartlett. Then in 1926 Alex Barr married Christina Gilvear, sister to Jack’s wife Marion. Six of the brothers of the Gilvear girls had also served, three of them did not come home. Jim and Edith Barr moved to Maryborough after the war, then to Brisbane. Jim died in 1928 from his war wounds. Jack and Alex, who had married the Gilvear sisters, remained farming at Glasshouse Mountains. McArdle to become a Mo Bro

Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle will forego his clean-shaven look next month and grow a finely groomed moustache to help raise funds for Movember. From November the 1, Mr McArdle will join thousands of other Mo Bro’s to raise awareness about men’s health, namely prostate cancer and men’s mental health. It’s been 30 years since Mr McArdle sported a moustache. “While I may not be able to pull off a Merv Hughes moustache I’ll certainly do my best to grow a decent mo,” Mr McArdle said. “Looks aside, if it helps put the spotlight on men’s health and raises funds for vital causes then it will certainly be worth it. “Having developed a close relationship with the Glasshouse Country men’s shed and supported the establishing of their Prostate Support group I’ve seen how important it is for men to get their prostate checked and to develop social relationships.” Mr McArdle hopes to raise at least $1,000.00 and will be holding a Mo Bro party at the end of November. By Bob McLean The Glasshouse Country Menshed was formed in 2009 with the prime focus on men’s health. The men have expanded with the formation of another group, the Glasshouse Country Prostate Cancer Support Group. The Mens Shed operates each Wednesday morning from the workshop at the Beerwah Resource Recovery Centre. The GCPCS Group started gathering in 2010 with monthly gatherings. The support group now gather on the even months of the year at the Mary MacKillop Center in Beerwah with the next gathering at 5.30pm on December 5. The group provides a quality guest speaker on the no size fits all subject of ‘Men’s Health’, be it depression (the black dog), or prostate cancer in the many ways it effects men and their famlies. The support of the group is for famlies from the Pine Rivers to the Sunshine Coast, a new support group has recently been formed at the Redcliffe Hospital. The Glasshouse group has a shared meal at each gathering where the issues of treatment and dealing with prostate desease is discussed openly with the professional guest speaker availabe to discuss the issues in a relaxed and casual environment. Students embrace spirit of Movember

At Glasshouse Country Christian College the students regularly become involved in fundraising, however this month has taken on a distinctively furry feeling with Movember awareness to focus on men’s health and prostate cancer. Two secondary teachers, Rob Magure and Russell Modlin have said goodbye to shaving and kisses from their wives for the month in order to grow moustaches for Movember. Not only will the furry upper lips spark conversations about men’s health (and probably cause a lot of good natured ribbing from students) Mr Modlin and Mr Maguire plan to fine their clean shaven colleagues to raise more money. You can never be too young to nag your dad to get a check-up and in the spirit of Movember all the children in Prep Green sported moustaches on the first day in November.

Performing arts scholarship Last year Jessie Ryan - Allen a Mt Mellum local was awarded ‘The Events Centre’ bursary for a young Sunshine Coast local, with applications now being accepted for 2013. It would be great to see another talented local as the recipient for next year. Any Sunshine Coast resident, 25 years or younger, who has completed their first year of a full-time accredited tertiary level educational course in the performing arts is eligible to be considered. The bursary is for $2,500 which must be used for HECS HELP fees for the course you are completing. John Butler Trio and The Living End. I performed on both the Songwriter's Stage and with my band on the Sand Stage. What is your favourite gig played this year? That's a hard one! My favourite acoustic show this year would be at Sol Bar in April, the audience was amazing, and my favourite band show would be the show we played at Coolangatta Hotel (while on my Spring Tour). Any music career advances? So many opportunities are arising. I just finished my first tour, from Byron Bay to the Sunshine Coast playing all the shows with my band. Are you working on anything at the moment? I'm finishing off some recordings in the studio at the moment which will be released in the next few months on my debut EP. I am also working on some ideas for video clips and my website is almost all finished.... so much happening! What's your biggest achievement to date? I have had so many milestones within the last year, I try and take each opportunity as it comes but it’s all one big journey which I love. Performing in my first festival slot at the Caloundra Music Festival this year, was a huge deal and very cool. Describe your music in three words? Our mountains are on the way to Germany This year’s Rotary Charity Calendar featuring the Glass House Mountains is on its way to Germany. Beerwah Public Relations Consultant John Jennings selected the publication as a gift for his family friend Bernd Marx of Boblitz, in the Spreewald area of southern Germany. Bernd is a devoted Ludwig Leichhardt enthusiast. “Leichhardt spent time exploring the Glass House Mountains before he set out on his historic 14-month overland trek from Queensland's Western Downs to Port Essington, NT and I am sure Bernd will gain a lot of pleasure from the calendar which contains a variety of exceptional photographs,” John said. “Í believe the publication makes a great Christmas gift,” he added. Bernd, who lives near Leichhardt’s home town of Trebatsch, has made six trips to Australia in recent years to study the Leichhardt route on foot, bicycle, public transport, tour buses or by 4WD.

Bernd played a major role in setting up the world’s only Leichhardt Museum, at Trebatsch, which in October next year will be the setting for celebrations to mark the 200th birthdate of Leichhardt. The Glasshouse Mountains Musicians Club

Contributed by Michael Whiticker It was a good night this last Thursday at the Beerwah RSL with nine acts appearing for the Musos club. With the theme ‘Songs that changed your world’ everyone provided their own twist - Grandmaster Andy even assuring us that on considering the task, four of his own songs was what he was left with! Andy enthralled us with his performance which appeared almost as much Maori Haka as solo singer with guitar. Andy has facial gestures to die for, and is certainly worth catching for his on stage presence as much as his soulful, emotion-clad songs. The general consensus was that his ‘Telephone’ song was the hit of the night. Another very strong performance came from Peter Gawith who had carefully considered the songs and singers of the 60s that inspired him as an adolescent. His performance of Marvin Gaye’s ‘What’s Going On’ was probably the evening highlight for me, and his version of ‘My Generation’ was a surprise - I don’t think anyone else could have come up with that interpretation of that song! Other evening highlights included our regular bassist Doug Sohi playing ‘Puff the Magic Dragon’ on his new 12 string guitar, and mentioning the

discovery of Normie Rowe’s version of ‘Shakin’ All Over’ upon newly arriving in Australia from Scotland in the mid 60s. A committed performance - reminiscent of Janis Joplin, came from Ajay with her soulful interpretations of ‘Gloria’ and ‘Red House’. Accompanying hot licks from Paul Fagan on his Stratocaster suited her reading “to a t”! One Small Step (Jon and Glenn) assumed their typically high standard with assured playing and exquisite harmonies in songs such as ‘Change the World’, ‘Don’t Worry be Happy’ and ‘Lean on Me’. Other performers included an un-plugged Paul Fagan who I joined for a version of ‘I’ve Got a Name’, and ‘People Get Ready’ – a classic of the American Civil Right Movement of the 60s. Mick Od - the evening’s recipient of the Most Award, for his commitment to writing and playing, performed ‘Father and Son’ and his partner Judy joined him on stage along with Pam Moroney for ‘These Boots are made for Walkin’. It’s great to see newcomers get up, especially as Judy has been sitting quietly in the wings for a year now! We hope to see more of her on stage in the future.

By Patricia Bradford (Publicity Officer) Members enjoyed the October meeting in Margaret Ferris’s garden. Her demonstration of floral arrangements without using florists foam proved very absorbing. What she could do with a woven support made from dried leaves, a few flowers, and greenery was simply amazing. Some wire, small plastic Margaret Ferris tubes, pebbles and plastic mesh was also utilised. The Christmas break-up is on Thursday, November 22 at the RSL 11.30am. Please bring a gift up to the value of $10.00 for exchange. Results of the competition bench for September, tie 1st Pam Innes and Coral Beutel, and tie 2nd Kath Howitt and Margaret Ferris. Mother –Daughter Camp was a great success

Integrated Family and Youth Services are running free mother daughter camps for mothers/ guardians and their teenage girls. The first camp was a great success! Held at Mapleton, the mums and their daughters participated in a range of educational seminar sessions, fun activities and still had plenty of time to use the fantastic outdoor facilities (seen below) in the camp. Quite apart from swimming, there are huge health benefits for the children if they play any sort of sport. It greatly reduces the need for lengthy hospital stays. Parents with children suffering from Cystic Fibrosis do not receive much help from Government and / or Health Funds. They are forced to pay for additional care out of their own pockets. Our Rotary Club has been providing some financial help to those families for a number of years and we are happy to continue supporting this cause. It was a great day for all participants and after friendly competition on the golf course, there were great prizes donated by local businesses for the teams to choose from. Even the weather played its part and nobody got drenched. Rotary wishes to thank our local businesses who supported the Golf Day and helped make it a Fun Day for all. See you all next year!

with Lea Parkes Anyone who has stopped in for a coffee at the Glasshouse Coffee and Tea Merchant on Steve Irwin Road, will no doubt have been pleasantly surprised by the tranquil garden setting out the back that Steve has created for his customers. And clearly I am not the only one who finds it a great spot to sneak away from work and hideaway from the world, as this gorgeous garden is now being expanded and more shade created to cater for the increasing demand. Fortunately Steve has been able to move the fence back and add in some extra tables and chairs and there has also been some work done on expanding the decked area. They recently hosted a local musician out the back on a Sunday afternoon, which impressed the customers and Steve is hoping to be able to make this a regular thing. In this crazy time leading up to Christmas remember this perfect place to escape for a short break!

Last week I tried out the Gelato at Seven Secrets Pizza at Glass House Mountains which I have to say was fantastic. That first flavour hit of the pistachio and then the Ferrero Rocher flavour followed by the blood orange sorbet made me think I had been transported to Italy, the home of Gelato. Kaylene from Seven Secrets explained a couple of the basics to me – the difference between Gelato and ice cream is the Gelato is made on milk and not cream, and has less sugar and fat than regular ice-cream. The sorbet is 100 per cent fat free, as well as gluten free and is made on real fruit and ice. Seven Secrets Pizza have a total of nine different types of Gelato and Sorbet, but the flavours change regularly. Don’t just listen to me about how great it is - head down and try it out for yourself!

Doing Business 5 minutes with the team at Café au Lait It is almost 12 months since Ken and Jodie Bannister took over the ownership of the cafe on the corner of Turner Street and Peachester Road at Beerwah. While their days are mostly taken up with working in their Vintage Caravan business ‘Suncoast Sunnies’ they are confident that the cafe is in good hands with the team of experienced staff that are running it. Who makes up the team? Manager Debbie has made the transition from retail and finance management to cafe manager. Debbie loves it and as with any new business there are plenty of challenges, and plenty to learn. But fortunately Debbie is someone that

doesn’t focus on the challenges but seizes the opportunities. And she is enjoying working out ways to constantly improve the business and in turn keep their loyal customers coming back. Deb is ably assisted in the kitchen and with customer service by Maureen (who is second in charge) and Alice. Both these lovely ladies were long-time staff at the Mobil at Moby Vics. So when Moby Vics closed down they were happy to make the move to Café au Lait. What does the staff enjoy most about where they work? Alice said she likes the atmosphere of the café as it is really personal and she has enjoyed getting to know the regular customers. Debbie said she really enjoys the response they receive from their customers, and is rapt that groups are enjoying the quiet, relaxed atmosphere that they offer and are making it their meeting spot. They recently hosted a ‘Book Club’ who are going to come back each fortnight. There is also a regular walking group who end off their walk with a coffee at the cafe as well and they have bookings for other bigger groups to come and enjoy the coffee and cake specials. Maureen said that she loves working at the cafe as the customers are beautiful, the staff are lovely to work with and the cafe is a pleasant atmosphere to work in.

What do the customers enjoy most about coming to the cafe? Customers like the unique atmosphere of the cafe, with the combinations of individual sofa chairs and two seater lounges with the quirky coloured chandeliers and local artists work displayed on the walls. They also seem to enjoy the friendly staff, the efficient service and the more recently introduced homemade cooking including tasty quiche, and patty cakes. What other things have you got planned for the future? This week we will be having our first themed day (with Melbourne Cup) and we really want to increase our night time functions. For a pre-booked event we can comfortably seat 45 people which makes it a great alternative for special events and birthday celebrations. School News Beerwah High rewards student excellence

Last Wednesday, Beerwah SHS celebrated their 21st Academic Awards evening. The evening began with music performances by the Year 12 Music Extension class and the Stage Band and the talent continued throughout the evening with performances by the Senior and Junior Dance Troupes and a contemporary bass solo by Lincoln Morse. Phoebe Slater and Travis Bosch, 2012 – 13 School Captains, did an admirable job compering the evening and should be congratulated on their excellent public speaking skills. The real stars of the evening were of course the students who would be acknowledged for their academic achievement, vocational achievement, along with those who excelled in cultural, co-curricular, citizenship and leadership activities throughout the year. Over 200 students from Years 8 to 12 were recognised throughout the evening with some students being recognised for their achievements in multiple categories. Deserving a special mention are the following students who were recipients of some of our major awards: Vivi Mohan (Year 10) – Junior School Dux Rae Austin (Year 12) – Academic Award, Art on the Walls, Outstanding Female student, ADF Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Awards Andrew Pill (Year 12) – Academic Awards, Outstanding Male Student, Senior School Dux Beerwah State High school would like to congratulate all of our award winners and also take the opportunity to thank the many local businesses and community members who sponsor many of our special awards.

When I get home in the afternoon, I just want to chill out and the last thing on my list (after snacking, watching TV, reading, chatting to friends or mucking about) is study. However, this term I’m going to make a big effort and have even created my own top three tips to help me out. They are: Tip 1: When I get home I am going to start studying straight away! That way, when it is done, I can do what I really want to do – relax. Tip 2: I need to avoid all distractions. Even small distractions seem to magically make me stop studying. For example, I love listening to music when I study but I can end up spending the whole study session changing songs and so on. Maybe I should think about listening to the radio but then I may be tempted to spend the whole time changing stations. Tip 3: Reward myself. Once I’ve studied for a while I plan to reward myself with a tasty treat. I may even give myself a pat on the back as long as I can do it without twisting my arm too much. I think I know what I’m doing when I get home from school…

Beerwah students celebrate the arts

Beerwah State School held its biennial Arts Week recently. During this week the children participated in activities across the Arts. Members of the community came to support this event bringing with them a specialised skill base. Within Beerwah staff the expertise is extremely high enabling the children to develop and enhance their own set of skills. This week of fun culminated in a Gala Evening which was well received by the community. During the evening, with the Centenary Hall transformed into an Art Gallery, we were entertained by the magical sounds of the Gembay Drumming Group led by Sally Maxwell the school Music Teacher and various ensemble groups led by Helen Dan-Brittingham the Instrumental Music Teacher. I’m going to focus on the draft Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme in this column as it is a pivotal plan for the future of the region. The new planning scheme will affect all aspects of development such as design, heights, zones and density in each of the distinct localities in Glasshouse country. Right now is the time for you to have your say about the draft scheme. There’s an important emphasis on the Beerwah Township in the scheme as it is our Major Regional Activity Centre. The town needs to strongly respond to increased levels of competition and development activity over the next decade. The draft scheme has a new and innovative approach to planning for Beerwah that emphasizes the opportunities of its rural setting, role as a great community hub and majestic views surrounding the town. The scheme proposes that continuous block style buildings are replaced with buildings that are distinctive of a modern country town. A key aim is to encourage designs to take advantage of the Glasshouse Mountains backdrop and for future buildings to have set-back contours so that views can be seen and preserved between the buildings. I have worked closely with the planners to encourage good building design that is commercially viable, while taking every advantage of the assets of Beerwah on both sides of the rail line. Until we know more about the future road and rail network, the approach for Landsborough in the draft planning scheme is to remain ‘steady as we go’. However, the scheme does increase some options for increasing density and improved flexibility for industrial and commercial development on the eastern side of the railway line. For Glass House Mountains, the focus is on keeping the character of town while accommodating an increased range of small-scale business and community uses. In general, development in rural residential areas will continue to reflect our country town lifestyle, such as low-rise detached dwelling houses on larger lots. Local information displays will be held at Beerwah Community Hall, Peachester Road on Friday, November 9 from 2.00pm to 6.00pm, and Glasshouse Mountains Visitor Information Centre on Wednesday, November 28 from 2.00pm to 6.00pm.

It was another highly successful meeting at Thunderbirds Café for my monthly cuppa with the good folks of Mooloolah Valley. We made some real progress on a number of topics, including what we need to do to attract RV’s to the town, how council can help out with Mooloolah’s 150th celebrations, and the need for everyone to have a look at the draft planning scheme. The last monthly meeting for the year is on Thursday, November 22 from 7.30am. A big thank you to the café for providing such a great space for our community to get together and talk about grass roots matters.

Sippy Creek Road

Minister Powell and I met with a number of residents and staff about issues, predominantly flooding, at Sippy Creek Road. We talked about practical solutions such as the clearing of debris and the installation of a land bank to restrict the outflow culverts under the main road. It was agreed that technical staff from Local and State Government will work together to progress the matter by providing a solution based report back to the community. I’ll keep you up to date in this column with information.

I’m a great supporter of our region’s cultural industry and council is helping in the search for local singer / songwriters to create a song that is catchy and energising and reflects the Sunshine Coast holiday experience. The song will be used in an upcoming television commercial and online advertising campaign promoting our beautiful Sunshine Coast. The lyrics should include the word ‘sunshine’ and the winning artist will receive a recording and promotion package worth almost $10,000. Applications close on November 19. Thank you for the update on the Glass House Mountains tower. Perhaps we can now see a light at the end of the tunnel (tower). My argument is that we are paying the same amount for a pathetic service in the hinterland. After a one and three quarter hours of persistence complaint call with Telstra I finally received a $30.00 credit on my wireless broadband account. This is after complaining for the last five years or more about the mobile and broadband service. I also found out that when you ring Telstra and they ask you to tell them in a few words what you want say ‘complaints’ and you should get a dedicated service officer ready to help??? We need more people to complain about the service and one day we may get a result. Incidentally I wish GCNews all the best in receiving a response from Telstra re the proposed timing of the tower as I spent three days all around the world trying to get this information. Brought back the memories

David Mackison's article about the bushfires in '94 brought back so many memories. My grandparents lost their shed on Mount Beerwah Road in Glass House and very nearly lost their house if it weren't for some very brave fire fighters who stayed at the house to protect it. On the Monday we attempted to return to their house to survey the damage but a spot fire on Mount Beerwah Road meant we had to turn back. We went to my aunt and uncle's farm on Old Gympie Road and that evening their house was also under threat. We went to higher ground and watched as fire balls rolled down Mt Crookneck. Fortunately the fire was contained and we were able to return home. It was a terrifying few days and I am sure 18 years on there are so many locals who remember that time so vividly. Stop the Glasshouse Country train wreck before it’s too late:

Two weeks ago the Sunshine Coast Council released the 2012 Draft Strategic Planning Scheme which when agreed to will provide the framework within which your community will be permitted to grow and develop. As a part of two evaluation teams I have been looking at the scheme from two positions, one from the Glasshouse Country and the other from the total Sunshine Coast Council area. I would like to make you aware of some issues the Glasshouse Country Chamber of Commerce believes will restrict growth and opportunities for business to grow and provide the services and jobs your community expects to see. In the 2004 Caloundra City plan, considerable land was allocated for low density housing,

that is the dwelling type that the majority of our community occupies. This land has in the main been built on with almost no allocation of significance for the next stage of low density development. Beerwah has a considerable area allocated to medium density plus some high density. These areas have existing dwellings, to go to these next two levels of density the existing dwellings need to be demolished, as most of these are built on concrete slabs, with brick. The cost to develop these areas will not stack up financially so nothing will occur. The community will not grow to provide you with the services you should have available in Glasshouse Country, you will need to continue to travel to other centres for the support you require. The availability of suitable industrial land has not been addressed to take advantage of the public transport available in this transport corridor to create new business and job opportunities. The scheme has effectively shut down Glasshouse Country in favor of other locations. The increasing cost of transport demands that your community is supplied with the required services, unfortunately it is a numbers game and without the population, your community will be overlooked. You will continue to see more empty shops as businesses open and then close, due to a lack of customers. I encourage you to make the effort to examine the draft planning scheme when it is on display in your area and have your say. We have adequate available land in each of our communities suitable to attract new residents in the same way as Glasshouse Country attracted you. This may include, low density, medium rise with mixed use, close to the public transport, additional rural residential so as to allow conventional farming to continue to function with the use of natural buffers and green space as the separation. Please make your thoughts known to the community so the Sunshine Coast Council can provide for the environment your community desires. Supporting the arts in our community

Last month I spoke about the privilege it is to be able to enjoy music in your life and how lucky those of us are who can do that. I also intimated the importance of sharing your music with others. The value to the community of having musicians and other artists working amongst them is well known. Clever Local Councils know this and wisely spend small amounts stimulating the arts in their community. Take for example, a small group of volunteers who spend thousands of hours building and honing their artistic hobby and decide to apply for an amount of public money to take their interest to another level. They ask for a few thousand dollars to build and maintain a website, pay for insurance and market an event. In the big picture of things a few thousand dollars to stimulate activity such as this in the community is a good investment. If it encourages people to turn off the box and do something a little different it has to be good. If that is also something which is fulfilling and promotes activity in the community…well that’s wonderful! It is a win-win situation as it is also cost effective for Councils and meets their goals of creating more liveable communities for their residents. I’ve lived in many parts of Australia and overseas and when I look at the cost of putting on big events with fireworks and fly-overs, which might last a day or two and can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, and I compare that to 50 local arts organisations given an average of $5,000 each (total $250,000) for their annual activities, and guessing that each organisation might reach 100 to 300 people (including organisation members, family and friends), we soon realise that supporting the arts in the community is a very sensible thing to do. And yes, this is before adding sport and many other healthy community activities to the mix. Looking at our Council, I am new to the region but am told that it is very supportive of local arts organisations. How sensible. Long may they retain and cultivate that approach! Tim tamming with Timomatic

One lucky Glasshouse local, Tina Bean (Beanzo) recently had what she described as just “an awesome time” when she won a competition to meet Timomatic. Tina and her brother Mark were two of around 15 people who got to catch up with the Nigerian-born Australian singer- songwriter and dancer, for about an hour and a half at the SeaFm 91.9 radio station. Timomatic rose to fame as a contestant on So You Think You Can Dance in 2009 and more recently was part of Australias Got Talent in 2011 where he placed third. Tina said it was really cool, as there weren’t any bouncers or security staff, just him and two of his dancers, so they really got a chance to talk to him. While there were quite of few of Tina’s mates that would have loved the chance to go with her, she decided to take her brother Mark who will be turning 18 soon, which is a pretty cool birthday present from a sister. One of the highlights of the afternoon was taking on Timomatic and his team mates in a ‘Tim Tamming’ competition. For those of you who aren’t familiar with this, it involves taking the corner off a Tim Tam and then sucking up a coffee through it (like it was a straw). Apparently Tina’s talent with the Tim Tams meant that her team were the winners on the day! www.gcnews.com.au

Last Thursday at 11.00am students from Beerburrum State School joined school children across Australia when they participated in ‘Music: Count Us In’. Since 2007, over 2.5 million kids have participated in this world-beating program that celebrates the value of school music education. Last year over 1,900 schools joined the biggest school initiative in Australia, performing the same song at the same time on the same day. The students got outside the classroom for their performance and channelled their musical talent in their Stephanie Alexander Garden. From Brisbane to Bunbury and Darwin to Devonport, Music: Count Us In gives children of all ages and abilities the opportunity to learn a song that they will perform simultaneously with hundreds of thousands of students nationwide.

The show will have seven rings operating simultaneously with an entry of about 700 dogs covering up to 120 different breeds. Many of these will be the regular favourites, but there will also be many unusual and rare breeds shown as well. Judging is alphabetical by breed so A for Afghan Hounds will be on early. The Search for Love

I’ve been listening with interest to the latest debate about the need for and the value of homework. Naturally, the responses have been varied and opinions somewhat divided. Imagine if the teacher set an assignment on ‘The Search for Love’ as homework and your child came to you for help? Where would you start? Like the homework debate, the answers will be varied and not all that clear-cut. How do we define ‘love’? One dictionary definition states: ‘fond or tender feeling; warm liking; attachment; strong, passionate affection’. Obviously there are varying degrees of love. So where do I begin my search for love? Do I look for it in family, home, friends, possessions, pets, education and intellectual pursuits, sport, hobbies, travel, etc, etc? In my quest to find love will I end up with more questions than I have answers for? All of these things will meet my needs to some extent; but are they totally satisfying? Will I have lived a lifetime and still never found total fulfilment in the love that I’ve experienced?

I would venture to say that love is the most fundamental need in our life; the need to be loved and accepted for who we are. Subconsciously, we all search for our deepest yearnings to be met. Therefore, the search for love is more about finding the truth about love. The Bible tells us that God is love. He is the very source of love; a love so much deeper than any other we’ve experienced before. How can we find Him? God tells us in His word that we will find Him when we seek Him with all our heart. John 3:16 tells us that we can find and experience that love through faith in Jesus. In Him we will find the answer to our assignment.

Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Native plants for House Plants

Are you one of those people who spend a fortune on the weekends buying plants to enhance your home décor? Very few of us ever think of using our wonderful native plants for this purpose. Many of our rainforest plants are suitable for large planters indoors due to the low light levels where they grow naturally. Try Black Bean Castenaspermum australe as a great tub or large pot specimen. Red fruited palm lily or Cordyline rubra also makes a good indoor plant. It is even lovelier if you are lucky enough to have it flower and fruit. Regardless of flowering, both plants have lovely glossy leaves which will enhance any home. Like all indoor plants they respond well to a drink of water outdoors if it ever rains! Not sure when at present! We are all familiar with the common Maiden hair fern which is one of our local natives. Equally attractive is the Hairsfoot fern which may often be found in plant nurseries. Both are great for hanging baskets. Another popular exotic species for hanging baskets is Hoya. You may not be aware that we have our very own Hoya australis growing locally. When in flower this is an extremely beautiful plant and well worth growing as a basket specimen or as a ground cover. It is also a butterfly host plant and a favourite of our stingless native bees. Our GMAN nursery carries stocks of Hoya, Black Bean and Cordyline.

Temporary Veggie Patch!

Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither would it seem will my dream vegetable patch, despite having an ever handy hubby and three very helpful kids. It looks as if both time and money will be required to see my plans come to fruition and that may take a little longer than a month … and closer to six months if all goes well. As it is, a month without being able to dig in the soil, plant seeds and seedlings, and generally potter around in a vegetable patch has been excruciatingly difficult for me. So I have now decided to do a temporary veggie patch, much like those I did when renting. This means focusing on planting things that are quick to grow and produce, with limited structural input and a short term focus on soil conditioning. There are a great number of summer vegetables that can be planted now, however some take a little longer than others or take up a lot of space. I am lucky now to have the space, but I do remember this being a hassle sometimes when renting. Another option for those that are really keen to get some produce quicker is to go with seedlings instead of seeds. This will ensure that you get to reap what you sew if you are planning to leave in a short time. Garden layout for temporary gardens really only needs to consider getting the minimum required sunlight. I remember utilising existing garden beds around the backyard of rentals as well as plenty of pots and styrofoam boxes. Now I am just digging straight into the middle of a paddock and extending on from what the previous gardener started. Obviously when it comes to temporary gardens, long term soil conditioning such as building up beneficial organism populations and organic carbon levels are not high priority due to the timeframe this requires. Hence soil preparation simply means cultivating the ground and supplying nutrients through fertiliser applications. Organic forms such as dynamic lifter and blood and bone are ideal for this as are regular liquid feeds of fish and/or seaweed emulsion. You will also find that these will improve your soil if you do happen to stay on a while longer. On this note, I will be starting on more long term projects over the coming month in preparation for my dream garden ... rotational compost heaps, a large worm farm and sourcing a good supply of manure. Local success at Noosa Triathlon Local Matt Hutchinson, 19, is a member of the Ngungun Tri club. He’s been training for the Noosa Triathlon, an event he participated in to raise funds for Heartkids. Clearly all that training paid off with him finishing first in his age group and 42nd overall. Matt, with the assistance of the Ngungun Triathlon Club, raised almost $3,000 through a raffle and generous donations from many local businesses. He also recently competed in the World Triathlon Championships in Auckland, but he said he had really looked forward to doing the Triathlon in Noosa. Congratulations Matt on competing and caring for those that will benefit from the funds raised for Heartkids Queensland.
