Hi Everyone
L
ast weekend we were at a barbeque with family on the Coast, and there was a plan underway for an all hands on deck, chainsaws in the air day, to bring down a massive palm tree on the upcoming public holiday. I politely explained that while they were welcome to our chainsaw, we wouldn’t be able to make it because we would be flat out working. I noticed a look of ‘oh yeah – it’s a public holiday’ but after convincing them that Brownie and I had two dawn services to attend, three parades and three services before lunchtime on Thursday in Glasshouse Country we were allowed off. It seems to come as a surprise to people outside the area –
just how much happens locally generally, but in particular on ANZAC Day. I have to say, I always struggle getting up for the dawn service – just knowing that we have to be out of bed by 3.30am seems to make me wake up every 10 minutes all night – but I am always glad afterwards. I, along with plenty of the local kids (both young and old), love the parades, and the last one of the day at Glass House is my favourite, travelling right past the front of our office. I love the bag pipes, the horses and most importantly seeing the pride on the faces of the people in the march! Lest we forget Regards,

Band of brothers
By Lea Parkes
When new coach for the Glasshouse Hinterland Lions AFL Seniors team, Karl Winters, picked up his player list for the season – he initially thought it was some sort of practical joke, as seven of the surnames were printed at least twice. However it has turned out to be correct and while Karl hasn’t officially confirmed it – he reckons it might just be the first time in AFL history that one team has been made up of so many family members. Karl has been coaching AFL for over 20 years – and he has never heard of a team made up of one set of triplets, five sets of brothers and a father and son pairing. It may not be since the three Daniher brothers all played in the finals for Essendon back in the 1990’s has so many siblings made the same team. The entire squad has 32 members, which means almost half the team is playing with a family member. As one of the players said to me, “it’s great, we have been playing together our whole lives so I don’t even have to think where he is.” At the end of the training session last Thursday night, there was plenty of positive energy present. The team had won the first two games of the season and were up against Pomona on Saturday,
the team reputed to be the toughest in their competition. Success in team sports really depends on the cohesiveness of the individual players, so Karl is hoping that to have so many combinations on the field that have a lifetime connection, this year just may be the big one for the club. The fellas would really like to get local AFL supporters to come down to a game this season – as they reckon it really spurs them on having a crowd. The games are on Saturdays, and we will make sure that home games are promoted in the Blood Sweat and Cheers section of GCNews. The brothers are Scott and Jason Huey, Scott and John Holecombe, Aaron and Steven Barry, Jesse, Shane and Lee Turner, James and Andrew Procter, Ben and Jamie Thompson along with father and son combination Zach and Victor Laghetti.

Keeping Glasshouse Country Beautiful By Greg Brown Our recent story about the state of the entrance into the Beerwah township created a considerable amount of interest – and not just locally. It seems that Keep Queensland Beautiful (previously known as Keep Australia Beautiful – Queensland) read the story and the letters to the editor as well. They contacted us last week to say that they have a program called Adopt-a-Spot, and if any group would like to get involved, they’d be happy to help them get started. Adopt-a-Spot (including Adopt-a-Road, Park, Beach, Waterway and/or any public space) is a safe, enjoyable and educational litter cleanup and landscape rehabilitation program that gives local communities the opportunity to contribute to a healthier and cleaner local environment. Through Adopt-a-Spot, groups are given an opportunity to accept responsibility for removing litter and debris and/or enhancing a section of an agreed local roadway, street, a local beach, waterway or park - or any public space. Groups decide on the area they wish to adopt and register with Keep Queensland Beautiful. Applications are forwarded to the Department of Main Roads and/or the local authority for assessment. Once approved, the Adopt-a-Spot group prepares a simple Site Safety Plan to ensure that issues such as personal safety are addressed.
Keep Queensland Beautiful provides each Adopt-a-Spot group with resources and other materials; safety vests, road safety signs, sharps containers (if applicable), gloves, rubbish bags and a safety DVD to help all group members understand the do’s and don’ts of the program. Groups pledge to carry out their activities on a regular basis – at least four times a year, for two years. Groups are encouraged and welcome to undertake more regular cleanups to keep their adopted area clean and litter-free. The community benefits are many – enhancing the local environment, making urban areas more attractive, improving public safety, increasing community pride and beautifying our local communities. To get involved, it’s as easy as registering your interest online (www.keepqueenslandbeautiful. org.au) or contacting the program manager Ms Jai Ogilvie on 3252 2886 or jogilvie@keepqueenslandbeautiful.org.au

Hard to locate sports on agenda At the March 28 meeting of the Sunshine Coast Council, a Notified Motion was tabled by Cr Greg Rogerson (Division 10) requesting the Chief Executive Officer prepare a report outlining the potential to establish a hard to locate sports precinct off Steve Irwin Way – specifically mentioning motor sports. Cr Rogerson – whose division takes in Kenilworth, Mapleton, Nambour and up to Eumundi – also asked that the report outline Councils current policy position and the status of land investigations for hard to locate sports. An amendment was moved by Cr Rick Baberowski to remove the specific naming of the Steve Irwin Way locality. The amended motion was carried eight votes to five. Cr Rogerson, who has an extensive background in motor and water sports, and a Councillor in the then Maroochy Shire Council, was one of the instigators of a steering group, which in 2009 resulted in ‘The Sunshine Coast Noisy and Hardto-Locate Sports Study – draft strategy and action plan’ being written by the Sunshine Coast Council. As part of the preparation for that study, a large parcel area of land to the south of the RoadTec depot at the Caloundra Road intersection was identified as having suitable attributes for such activities. The report was never tabled in Council, but Cr Rogerson thought it was time the issue was brought to the fore again. “With the planned coast development, we need
to identify these locations now rather than later, when future development has restricted our options,” said Cr Rogerson. “We need to bite the bullet and get on with it. “I’ve been told by the local motor sports groups that the location off Steve Irwin Way is perfect. “It has easy access, is located close to major centres, is away from urban areas – it’s too valuable to let slip away,” explained Cr Rogerson. Cr Rogerson confirmed that the area in question is part of the Beerwah State Forest - Jowarra Section, which the previous State Government identified as having high environmental values, and one which would have been protected for conservation once the logging operations were phased out. “The new State Government has changed that, and we need to show them that we have suitable other uses for that land,” he said. Cr Baberowski said that his main concern was that the original motion implied a state of readiness for the nominated site which he didn't believed existed or was supported by the divisional community. “By removing that reference I believe the amended motion can still progress the investigation of a range of sites across and beyond the region (i.e. Moreton Bay Region also has similar interests) without raising expectations that we are more advanced in identifying a particular site than we actually are,” he said. A report is to be brought to the May 23 Council meeting, which is expected to give more detail as to the feasibility of the Steve Irwin Way site, as well as other possible locations across the coast.
Wilful damage charges A Sunshine Coast teenager has been charged during an on-going police operation targeting graffiti and wilful damage offences at the Sunshine Coast. The officer in charge of the Sunshine Coast District Child Protection and Investigation Unit (CPIU), Senior Sergeant Phil Hurst said Operation Ferret 3 commenced in February 2013 and involves detectives from Caloundra CPIU, Beerwah Police and specialty officers from Brisbane. “We have used both uniformed and plain clothes police initially targeting the Landsborough and Beerwah Police Divisions. “Since this operation commenced, police have charged six people with 53 graffiti / wilful damage offences and seven drug related offences.” A 15-year-old Sunshine Coast boy will be dealt with under the Youth Justice Act after being charged with over 30 graffiti offences. Senior Sergeant Hurst wishes to remind everyone this operation is on-going and is being conducted throughout the Sunshine Coast District. “Graffiti comes at a cost to the community so we would like to thank members of the public for working with us to help solve these crimes,” he said.

When I walked into the shop last week the message came through loud and clear from the ladies working - that Ardie had done an amazing job over the many years. Her team of dedicated volunteers will all be very sad to see her leave. The ladies were full of accolades for Ardie, which a very humble Ardie was clearly uncomfortable with – being someone who goes quietly about her work in the community, not seeing what she does as anything special. Ardie has been involved with St Vincent De Paul for 26 years, 10 of those in Victoria and since 1998 in Landsborough, where she was instrumental in setting up the shop. Over the years she has contributed much to its long term success; however she feels it is time for her to use her time in other ways to benefit the community. Ardie said that she has really enjoyed working in the shop. She has developed wonderful friendships and met so many lovely people from within our local community and others dropping in from outside the area. Ardie wants to wish the new coordinator good luck and all the best and hopes they will enjoy it as much as she has. One of other ladies I met on the day was Betty
By Lea Parkes
McLean, at 87 years old, she is their most senior volunteer and clearly she enjoys her weekly shift on the roaster. Betty explained that when she works she is in charge of shoes. When she arrives, the ladies get her to give them a good clean before they go on display in the store. She also told me that she would recommend volunteer work for others, but sadly the store has all the volunteers it needs at the moment! If you want to say farewell to Ardie she will be working in the shop on Monday!

From high heels to gumboots During the recent Easter and school holidays, Cindy Reader from Beerwah High School and her husband ventured to Munduberra Queensland to volunteer for BlazeAid after the devastating floods in January.
BlazeAid is a volunteer-based organisation that works with farmers and families in rural Australia after natural disasters such as fires and floods. Working alongside the rural families and farmers, volunteers help to rebuild fences or repair crops that have been damaged or destroyed. Neither Cindy nor her husband had any fencing experience, just a willingness to give it a go and learn on the job. Fencing isn’t only ‘men’s work’ and age is no barrier. Over one third of the previous BlazeAid volunteers were ladies. Many of the long-term volunteers are in their 50s and 60s, with other volunteers aged from teens to their 80s. Equally important, volunteers also help to lift the spirits of farming families who are often facing their second or third flood event after years of drought, or devastating losses through bushfires. BlazeAid volunteers can work in a disasteraffected area for a day or two, or a week or more,

working with rural property owners and farmers to help them rebuild their fencing and their communities and to become productive again. Community groups such as Rotary, district cricket and local football clubs were many of the volunteers who helped look after the hungry and the tired fence builders with wonderful nourishing dinners. In many respects it is a community effort. They were fed extremely well by the farmers with morning teas of scones, cupcakes and fruit cake and platters of sandwiches. This is the farmer’s way of giving back something to the volunteers, who without their help, would consider walking away from their farms. Some have suggested that BlazeAid is the organisation that is still hard at work long after the emergency response, the well wishers and the media interest has dissipated. BlazeAid is there for the long haul. Now back at school, both Cindy and her husband believe that anyone can send money overseas to help out, but it is a gratifying experience to be hands-on working alongside the farmers and helping communities that are trying to get back on their feet.

At the meeting of Beerwah NHWQ held on April 8, the ‘Good Neighbour Award’ was presented to Bruce and Helen Page, who had been nominated by Pam and John Innes. Their citation read: ‘We would like to nominate both Helen and Bruce Page for a Good Neighbour Award: Bruce for his work over the years with the Rural Fire Brigade and as a Trustee of the Peachester Hall and Helen for her work for the Peachester History Committee. Ron Stocks, the Area Co-ordinator of Beerwah NHWQ (on right), Above all, we nominate them for presenting the certificate to Helen their joint effort on the Charity and Bruce Sports Committee which, each year, raises many thousands of dollars for Cancer Research.’ Unfortunately, John and Pam Innes were unable to be present. Remember that the award now covers Glass House, Landsborough, and Peachester so keep those nominations coming in to Sheila Williams (5439 0520, e-mail swilli17@ dodo.com.au). Also at the meeting, a certificate was presented to Hudson Newett to mark his 21 years of service to NHWQ, and a special cake and other refreshments were enjoyed after the meeting. The Bowel Scan kits are available at participating pharmacies at Beerwah, Glass House Mountains and Mooloolah between May 1 – 31. The cost of each kit is $8.00. Since this project began there have been many cases that have been detected as needing follow-up treatment, and because of this early detection, many lives have been saved. Last year there were 21 tests that returned positive samples which require follow-up treatment with medical professionals. This simple test could save your life or that of a family member or friend. Detected early, bowel cancer is the most curable cancer. Early detection is your best protection. Can you afford not to be in it?

The three candidates will be revealed in due course but they represent an excellent cross-section of the Glass House community and I have every confidence they will do their best for the electorate.
Community Feedback sought on youth justice
The Newman Government has recently announced that we are developing a youth justice blueprint and we want your help! The community is being encouraged to have their say via a survey that is now available online at www.justice.qld.gov.au until June 30. This is an issue that many people have an opinion on and it is critical that any future policy decisions are made in the best interests of our local communities. We acknowledge this is not an issue we can fix overnight but with the input of the community we can ensure the voices of Queenslanders are heard.
2013 Red Shield Appeal
Anyone who has been to my annual Volunteer Award ceremony knows how much I value the volunteers in our community. So when you see them out in force during the Red Shield Appeal Doorknock on the weekend of May 2526, make sure you give what you can to this very worthy cause. The Salvos do a great job right across Queensland to help families and individuals in need. The Salvos provide vital programs such as crisis accommodation, family support services, employment services, chaplaincy, aged care and counselling for those in need across the state. The Sunshine Coast University Hospital is coming
Perhaps the biggest question now is how does the new hospital operate? The Government has one goal and that is we will ensure people are treated quickly, professionally and at no cost to their wallet. This can be done by using a public or private model or a combination of both. There seems to be a concern that as the word ‘private’ is in the title, public patients will not be seen at all or worse be seen at a cost. Let me say this is not the case. Whatever is decided, the end result must be the safety and well-being of patients. Public private partnerships have been painted with a dark brush but they are not unique. Western Australia has two, and a third being constructed, which have different configurations of public / private input. Irrespective no public patient pays a cent and the Government always holds the whip hand. The Health Minister has asked the Sunshine Coast Hospital Board to prepare a report detailing what if any services can be outsourced. There are a number of things that need to be considered when talking about a Public private partnership hospital such as •What has happened before under a public hospital system? What was right and what was wrong with this model? How much did it cost the tax payer? •What have providers under a public private partnership model achieved and where have they failed? •What will a Government do to ensure (under a public system or a public private partnership) that it retains total oversight and the ability to make changes should they be necessary? •Can certain services be better delivered under one model rather than the other? These are a few questions that I hope the report will provide the answers to. This document will be open to comment, criticism and debate. Whether it is written with the end in mind or objectively will not be difficult to see. I think as a community we need to debate the pros and cons and not throw out the idea because it is new. The fact is that under any public private partnerships currently operating in Australia, public patients pay nothing. Our community has achieved so much together. Let us now move forward together to achieve the best for public patients across the Sunshine Coast. www.gcnews.com.au

Dine In
Stop and enjoy the view
If you have seen the movie The Castle you will recognise the line ‘ahh the serenity’ I feel when I take a seat at ‘The Lookout Café’ at Glass House. There is something just so relaxing sitting looking across the mango trees to the majestic mountains, doing a quick skim for kangaroos getting comfortable on the grass. It is the one place locally that you can be guaranteed to strike up a chat with a visitor sometimes just from Brisbane or interstate, but so often from overseas. Seeing the look on their faces when they spot the kangaroos is just priceless. One overseas traveller asked me if they were wild – I am not sure what the other option was, that the girls at the café were raising a small mob of kangaroos as pets? So the view is definitely a stand-out feature of the

café, but I have to say they have also chosen well with their coffee. Auswana coffee, grown and roasted just outside of Woodford, is promoted as a ‘Clean and Green’ product and is guaranteed insecticide, pesticide, and GM free. It’s also grown using sustainable practices. And if you are more of a tea drinker, they have a great range of teas on offer, which of course go well with their devonshire teas. The girls also get plenty of great feedback on their gorgeous sweet treats that they sell from the cabinet. What’s on offer might change, but they are consistently of great quality. The menu also includes breakfast, lunch, morning and afternoon tea and includes vegetarian and gluten free items.
The Lookout Cafe
Actually the girls tell me one of the biggest sellers is their homemade soup, which surprises them, but even in summer they get plenty of orders for the tasty rustic flavors of tomatoes and lentil or sweet potatoes. It is easy for us to take for granted the beauty of the mountains, but you know the old saying it is important to stop and smell the roses. My advice is head to ‘The Lookout Café’ and stop and admire the view! Open seven days, from 9.00am – 3.00pm during the week and 9.00am – 4.00pm on the weekend.

Bowen Therapy is a very gentle non-invasive, whole body remedial treatment that relaxes tight and sore muscles, reduces pain and discomfort and increases flexibility. It can be used to treat new injuries or old re-occurring chronic conditions. People often have amazing results even from the first treatment. The treatment is a series of small moves over soft tissue in specific areas, which encourages the whole muscle to relax. This has a flow-on effect throughout the body. Each treatment is tailored to the individual’s needs. Bowen Therapy can benefit everyone from newborns to the elderly. Some ailments that may benefit from Bowen Therapy include colic, back pain, knee, ankle, hip or pelvic problems.

Pain in the back? Is your back often stiff and sore? Does it take a while to get out of bed in the mornings? Have you given up hobbies you once enjoyed because the pain just isn’t worth it? Do you feel older than you really are? If so, we may be able to help. It is estimated that approximately 85 per cent of the population will experience low back pain at some stage of their lives. Despite its prevalence, it is by no means normal to experience any level of pain on a regular basis.

The normal state of the human body is vibrant, healthy, and pain-free. If you are not feeling this way, something is pushing your body away from normal. We are all well aware that diet and exercise are key factors in keeping our bodies feeling great. What most people don’t know about is Spinal Subluxation, a term chiropractors use to describe dysfunctional vertebrae in the spine. This is a very common condition that pushes the body away from functioning normally and feeling great. Subluxations can be caused by old or new injuries, but most often are caused by repetitive stresses of everyday life. Low back and pelvic subluxations can also lead to further symptoms, such as hip and knee pain, or digestive troubles. There are many causes of back pain, and each cause requires a specific treatment. If your back pain is caused by Spinal Subluxation, the chiropractic adjustment is the only therapy that will correct the cause. To find out if Spinal Subluxation is the cause of your decreased quality of life, call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today, or visit www.adjusttolife.com.au Beerwah 5494 0499 or Maroochydore 5443 4545

Within each of us there’s a certain craving for more. I can say that with conviction because I often experience it myself. Our lives seem to hunger and thirst for a greater fulfilment. For children this craving can manifest in very basic ways and fast food chains and advertising companies know this only too well. McDonald’s for example have capitalised on our cravings for more. They promise their young costumers a meal that will make them endlessly happy. And it’s incredible how many of us fall for their empty promise. I’ve seen homes where the little ‘Happy Meal toys’ are lined up from one end of the room to the next. Almost as a mocking shrine that screams at you, ‘There’s more happiness where that came from. Come and get it.’ The frightening thing is that the same phenomenon happens in our spiritual lives. There seems to be a vacuum, always sucking for more, that doesn’t seem to find satisfaction or fulfilment. There’s a deeply rooted need in our lives. The problem is that we seek to satisfy our hunger in the wrong ways. We search for things to satisfy the yearning of our souls. And that’s something only the Bread of Life can do. We may ask, what did Jesus mean when He said, ‘I am the Bread of Life’? First of all, bread sustains life. Carbohydrates, which are a major ingredient of bread, are metabolised by the human body and used for fuel. Just the same, GLASSHOUSE COUNTRY

our spiritual body needs the Bread of Life (Jesus Christ) for sustenance and growth. But what is the Life that’s meant here? Life is the new relationship that we have with God - a relationship based on our surrender in faith to God, and His unfailing love for us. Real life consists of the intimacy, the trust, the obedience, and the love that we share with God. This new life is God’s gift to us through Jesus Christ. Without Jesus it’s impossible to have the fullness of life that God has willed for us. Without Christ a life is more like an existence… empty, nagging, longing, hungry for the real thing. Whatever our longings and cravings may be, God understands our innermost needs and desires. Let us count on His promises. Let us have faith. Let us feast on the Bread of Life. And let us praise God for His gracious provisions. Blessings!

Need a hand when juggling properties? Selling one house and buying another is a tricky thing to do at the best of times. That’s because unlike when you were arranging your first home loan, you now have to juggle two properties - and even the best juggler would appreciate an extra hand!

Friends of Cahill’s Scrub The Friends of Cahill’s Scrub is a small group of Peachester residents who decided to become involved in the restoration of the 35 ha reserve which is located between McDonalds Road and Harold Place. It is one of the few remaining scraps of lowland subtropical gallery rainforest. It is also one of the few remaining habitats of the Giant Barred Frog, Tusked Frog and Cascade Tree Frog, all of which are threatened species. About 120 bird species have been observed in the reserve, in addition to echidnas, many reptiles, and platypus in London Creek. If you’re interested in joining our group in this endeavor you are invited to join us for our inaugural meeting to be held on Saturday, April 27 at 9.00am, commencing with a meeting at 101 Harold Place followed by morning tea after which there will be a tour of several sites in the reserve which are being considered for the initial projects to be undertaken. What the ….? Rob from Peachester sent in these photos of a plant that has popped up in his garden – the likes of which he’s never seen before. It’s almost 3m high, fast growing with chinese gooseberry like fruits and distinctive ribs running down the stems. He’d really like to know if it’s friend or if it’s foe. Any one got any ideas? If so, let me know at brownie@gcnews.com.au or 5438 7445.

We need a pensioner’s party
I rang the Premiers office for information on a pension. I wanted to know how to get assistance like a party, or a function, or who to ring for social assistance, and I was told ring the dole office, who at best are run by morons. With, I don’t know, about at least 10 or more million old age pensioners in Australia, no-one, no party, no nothing. If there was, we could win voting power and lose these dead beats who call themselves pollies. The power we have at the voting booth is awesome, yet what we do is tragic. When will there be a pensioner party? The lot who represent us are paid stooges. Instead of complaining all the time - do something, there must be some with brains out there?
L Woods Mooloolah
P.S I am sick of the image pollies have done to this country which I have called home for the past 80 years. God for a Chiefly or a Curtin.
Mothers Day, Garden Party Those that attended The Glasshouse Country Anglican congregation’s Garden Party in 2011 will be interested to read that we will be holding one again this year in the grounds of the Mary MacKillop Centre. As well as the Fashion Parade we will have a new feature for primary school students. We are going to have a hat making competition. The hats have to be made out of copies of Glasshouse Country News, so they need to start practicing, but not before mum and dad have finished with the paper! There will be face painting and we have also booked a clown, who we will ask to judge the hat parade. Even if it should rain ‘The show can still go on’ under cover. Please see the ad in this edition for more details.

Saving cash on calls For years we have been paying Telstra's monthly connection charge which is currently $31.95 per month or $95.85 per quarter. I was under the impression that this was a standard charge for all land line home phone users. Not so! I recently had reason to visit the Telstra website where I discovered that there are many ‘plans’ which incorporate different charges for calls to local, national and mobile phones. As ‘senior pensioners’ who need a phone for security as well as contact with family and connection via ADSL to the internet, I had considered discontinuing the land line and using a mobile phone for which I only pay for calls made. I was amazed to discover that a Budget Plan exists at $22.95 per month or $68.85 per quarter, a saving of $27.00 a quarter! Also by cancelling the ‘silent number’ at $8.75 a quarter I am now saving a total of almost $36.00 a quarter. The silent number was a joke anyway, since I still get spam calls which are fielded by my answering service. The only downside of the Budget plan is the local call charges are slightly higher. But unless you use the phone a lot then the savings are quite considerable. It does pay to investigate where savings can be made, as fees and charges are continually increasing and well beyond the rate at which pensions increase. Now to check out where savings can be made in Medical Insurance.

In relation to your article on the recent fatal accident at the Bowen Road intersection I have to agree with the Traffic Branch's assessment. Tragic and sad though the situation is, these incidents are caused by driver error. While I sympathise with your correspondent who was ‘T-boned’ there are road rules governing these situations. If you are obliged to give way you cannot enter the intersection until it is safe to do so. If you do not have clear vision you simply have to wait until you do. I hope all drivers will adopt that attitude as I often travel along Steve Erwin Way on a motorcycle! Many people negotiate that intersection every day without incident. I was happy to see the speed-limit reduction on Steve Erwin Way a couple of years ago. Has this helped? And if so, should a reduction to 60 klm from the existing 80klm sign to the north and the 100klm to the south sign be considered? Damian Petrie Mount Mellum Yes I agree, as most people who use Steve Irwin Way and Bowen Road would like to see a safety measure put into place. Even a temporary one such as a painted round about on the road, clearly marked for all to see with signs clearly marked
along the road, before you get to the corner. Also one at the Burgess Street intersection. I also agree, a petition taken up for council to know we belong to them and our safety is their responsibility. We pay our rates too. So Mr Lewis Kwarcianyi, when will you be ready to start? I would love to sign your petition.
Kay Farrell Glass House Mountains
Dangerous intersection The recent fatal crash outside the Matilda service station happened during daylight on a straight stretch of road with clear visibility both ways. I use this intersection often and have never considered it particularly dangerous, but because it is a high speed intersection, you have to be careful. However, the intersection of Burgess Street and Steve Irwin Way, the main entrance into Glass House Mountains Township is very, very dangerous. When turning right into Steve Irwin Way the view to the left is most often blocked by left turning vehicles, particularly at busy periods, and this is also a high speed intersection. This intersection is a serious accident waiting to happen. Councillor Rick Baberowski promised in his election campaign to push for improvements to this intersection, it would be interesting to know what progress he has made. In my 50 years of driving, this intersection concerns me more than any other I have encountered anywhere.

I believe a media bill introduced into parliament in the last week of its sitting was a con to get the people into thinking that TV and the media are free agents when nothing could be further from the truth. The bill was never intended to go to the vote in Parliament. TV is used by government drug companies and the medical profession to promote sales and profit from fear campaigns, and the media only tell us what they want us to know. Any letters to the media that ask sensitive questions on subjects that are rarely mentioned don’t get printed – that also applies to free newspapers. So those who think that free speech or the expression of one’s thoughts are not controlled need to take a much closer look. J.V. Beerwah

For 19 years I have been the kindergarten teacher at Landsborough Community Kindergarten. In that time I have been privileged to be a part of the lives of over 600 children and their families. I’ve been fortunate to work with so many hardworking volunteer parent committees and dedicated assistant teachers, including Debby Mundy who has been a wonderful teaching partner for the past seven years. Working at the kindergarten has been an important part of my life. I’d like to thank the community and all of the families who have been involved in making the kindy an enjoyable and rewarding place to work. I want to wish the new teacher Ali Marks, all the best for the years ahead and my best wishes to past, present and future families of the Kindergarten. Val Simpson Landsborough Kindy

Landsborough Tennis Club Contributed by Kerry Roach Working Bee The Landsborough Tennis club is having a ‘working bee’ and would like to invite any interested members and non-members who can spare a few hours to come along and help out. Some of the jobs include digging, cleaning, tree lopping, painting and a few other odd jobs. We greatly appreciate anyone who can volunteer their time. For further information please contact: Lou Gonano: jazzbass86@gmail.com , phone 5494 9817. Date: Sunday, May 5 Time: 8.00am (Morning tea provided) Warning to all players Landsborough Tennis Club was broken into the weekend of the April 13 and 14. Among the items stolen were several Brand New Head Junior Racquets still in their covers. If you are approached to purchase any of these or you know of anyone who has, please contact the Beerwah police as the matter is in their hands. Other items were a Fischer and Paykel Fridge and one of our junior players brand new adult size Wilson Racquet in a black cover, an old electric jug and the club’s first aid kit. This is a setback for our junior players as some of them rely on access to the racquets to play on Friday nights.

No splash
Two men travelling out west became very thirsty; they came across an old deep well. One man throws a stone into the well, saying they should be able to hear a splash. There was no splash so they throw a brick down, but still no sounds. They see a railway sleeper handy, and drop it into the well. No splashes, so they turn to walk away. A young goat comes running past and straight down the well.
What’s with the goat jumping down the well, they thought? They walked on further, until they met a man looking for a goat. They said “a goat just ran to the well and jumped into the well.” The man said, “it can’t be my goat, it was tied to a sleeper.” Irene Wedel, Elimbah

CAPRICORN December 23 – January 19 There are social complications of how to commit to honouring any long term goals that impact your independence. Be grateful that over the weekend you are ready to have some quiet introspection to renurture the body. Be self sufficient this week and not depend on others. AQUARIUS January 20 – February 19 The full Moon eclipse this week impacts favourably upon career ambitions and home interests. It is gratifying to express yourself creatively by doing anything you enjoy at home or to assist a family member in need. The greatest success is by having the knowledge of current affairs. PISCES February 20 – March 20 This full Moon this week is a signal for patience if travelling. You need time to think again about the value of any travel commitments. Avoid engaging in too many social activities. Anything said to a friend restores peace, and perhaps ignites passion. The best soul-quality counselling. ARIES March 21 – April 20 What a week you can expect as the full Moon in Scorpio highlights your financial ties to other people. It’s time to make hard choices or cut your losses. Clear thinking and mental awareness will counteract any misunderstandings, travel difficulties and other problems for you now.

VIRGO August 23 – September 22 This full Moon week is a lunar eclipse one. Focus feelings with priorities to get what you want done. Co-operation is easy to come by and innovative ways around a problem restores goodwill and trust. Avoid being too possessive and secretive. This is a karmic time for you now. LIBRA September 23 – October 22 This Scorpio full Moon in its eclipse pattern leaves you wondering just where you stand regarding your financial outlook. It calls for making some hard choices, perhaps one that may involve standing up to your partner! You are now ‘on notice’ not to be entangled unwisely. SCORPIO October 23 – November 22 The eclipse this week is operating under a full Moon under your sign. So this is your karmic ‘wake up’ call, regarding critical relationship matters. This eclipse has the power to unseat one side of a partnership. In a Taurus / Scorpio karma, consider who is the most selfish person. SAGITTARIUS November 23 – December 22 The intense Scorpio full Moon lunar eclipse is in your house of solitude, secrets and karma. Watch for slips of the tongue as Sagittarians this week may irresponsibly reveal a best kept hidden secret. Check for matters which may concern the home in family maintenance and repairs.

TAURUS April 21 – May 21 This full Moon week is in your opposite sign of Scorpio. It’s also a transformational eclipse that could rock partnerships. It’s time to realistically re-evaluate the worth of all your relationships. Self analysis over café discussions brings out matters of a secret nature. Emotional intimacy. GEMINI May 22 – June 21 You should avoid being temperamental and unpredictable under this full Moon trying to do more than you can. Do not get off on radical tangents or ignore worthwhile friends. Let people know your humanitarian activities but when Mercury sideswipes Neptune don’t get lost. CANCER June 22 – July 22 A Scorpio full Moon week to you is a karmic eclipse and this will press all your buttons in love, childcare and partnerships. Rely on faith in your connection to the Universe to overcome obstacles. Mars with Saturn near the eclipse brings a stopgo pattern. Keep trusting instincts. LEO July 23 – August 22 There is pressure this week on home and professional life. Good luck comes to add to your professional mobility putting extra cash in your pocket. There should be plenty of chances to have some good weekend fun. Understand what can or can’t be done. Reorganise priorities.
